MARINE RADIO COVERAGE AND SAFETY OF VESSELS AT SEA

When a tagged lobster is rereleased, please record the position and depth. As with any tagging programme, there will likely be a small percentage of recaptures so there will not be screeds of paperwork to complete. When you do get a recapture, please record the details and email those direct to the NZ RLIC. <lobster@nzrocklobster.co.nz>

Cape Palliser Marine Radio Association (CPMR) is in the final stages of upgrading the VHF channels that provide reliable coverage on the Wairarapa coast from Akitio to Palliser Bay across to Wellington.

LOBSTER MOVEMENTS

Ngawi commercial fisherman, Sam Gray, is an active participant in the CRA 4 tagging programme. One of his recaptures in the 2017/18 season is very representative of the growth and movement of CRA 4 rock lobsters. Released in early October 2015, tag number 257123 was a berried female lobster. It was recaptured again late in the same month but immediately released. Almost 12 months later in October 2016, #257123 was captured again, this time soon after releasing her eggs. Commercial fishermen routinely return all tagged lobsters to the sea after recording capture details and so it was because #257123 was recaptured by Sam in October 2017. Over the three years since the first release that lobster had berried up at least three times and moulted at least once to grow from 58mm tail width through to 61mm tail width. And Sam put it back in the water again in 2017 and is expecting to see it again some time soon.

Rock Lobsster #257123 has not moved too far from home over the years.

The national emergency Channel 16 is the fastest way to get action through the Police and their links to helicopter rescue. Any vessels unable to get a call through to Channel 16 should immediately go back to local channels which are routinely monitored by the Wairarapa commercial fishing fleet. For non-life threatening problems such as break downs and minor medical incidents local assistance can be sought through the local channels. However it is still recommended that vessel operators log a call on Channel 16 in case the situation deteriorates quickly. CPMR continues to improve safety for boating on the Wairarapa coast with new markers at Sandy Bay, Tora; a portable base station available there; and an emergency base station at the farm at Tora.

NGAWI BIG 3 NEXT FEBRUARY

First held in 1991 with 20 around anglers. It has been held every year since and has become the biggest fishing competition in Wairarapa with 360 competitors last February.

grandkids of competitors.

CPMR supports sustainable fishing and has supplied and installed VHF equipment for use by the Ministry for Primary Industries compliance and enforcement personnel.

Entry forms can be downloaded at www.ngawifishingclub.co.nz from December. The club also has 10 monthly club days for its members with prize money jackpotting for any species not caught or a cancelled day.

In 2014 year shark was removed from the list of species fished and the club added gurnard so as to keep the 10 species.

The club has two tractors – a John Deere 3140 and a Landini Ghibli 100 – for the members to launch and retrieve.

Thanks must go to our many sponsors whose generosity ensures the Ngawi Big 3 is one of the best.

For further information contact Club Captain Donna Fenwick Phone 027 642-9432 Email gdfenwick@slingshot. co.nz or

As well as the open section, there is a special section for juniors and a land-based competition for spouses/partners, kids and

In case of genuine emergency, Channel 16 is the national emergency frequency and for Mayday calls this channel should be the first used by a vessel operator. Channel 16 calls link directly with Maritime Radio and the National Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

As you can see from the basic map that records releases and recaptures, #257123 has not moved too far from home over the years. This behaviour is very consistent with the many thousands of tagged rock lobsters now resident in CRA 4.

The annual Ngawi Big 3 fishing competition is booked in for Friday 15th to Sunday 17th next February.

The marine radio network provides coverage for the Castlepoint area on Channel 3; for the Riversdale area on Channel 61; for Flat Point and Cape Palliser on Channel 4; and for Ngawi and Palliser Bay on Channel 7.

With the summer season and Christmas New Year break nearly upon us remember to get your boat serviced and include a radio check and service if it is required. For expert advice CPMR subscribers should see Teletronics in Masterton and ask for a CPMR discount. When you have time to put to sea then if in doubt don’t go out. A good way of checking your judgement is to ask your passengers or crew if they are all happy with the sea conditions. Safe boating.

The trails around Henley Lake are some of the most popular in the Masterton region, with up to 700 users every day. It’s not hard to see why when you experience it for yourself; follow the lime path around the circumference of Henley Lake, enjoying the varying bird life on the lake. Add a further two kilometres to your walk or ride and enjoy our expansive wetlands bordering the Ruamāhanga River.

A three kilometre trail alongside the Waipoua River is a different experience altogether; follow the river from Akura Road to the west of town as it travels through town and alongside Queen Elizabeth Park all the way to its meeting with the Ruamāhanga River. Visit www.mstn.govt.nz/community/recreationtrails/ for a complete map of trails throughout Masterton.

See you out there!
