This fantastic agricultural event showcasing some of the best our district has to offer has become a must-see annual event, and one that Carterton is proud to host. FROM WAIRARAPA A&P PRESIDENT
02
On behalf of the Wairarapa A&P Show committee, I welcome you to the 142nd annual Spring show – sponsored by TFM Tractors and Trust House. Sponsorship is a vital ingredient of running the show and it reflects the huge community involvement necessary to run such a magnificent three day event. The beef section promises to showcase some impressive animals in 2019. This has been especially challenging to ensure bio-security
A lot of work goes into running a show, from the organisers, stall holders, volunteers and event managers. This top-quality event wouldn’t be possible without any of them. To reach 142 shows is a testament to the commitment put in by those involved, past and present. On behalf of the newly elected council, I would like to thank you for your dedication and also thank the public who continue to support such a great local event. We wish all the competitors the best of luck and hope you enjoy a great time in our beautiful Carterton District.
Noho ora mai. MAYOR GREG LANG Carterton District
measures are upheld and to high standards. The medieval presentation, strongman competition and the lawn mower racing sound exciting. Fonterra’s involvement with its milking cow and children’s train is a wonderful initiative and we thank the co-operative for getting behind Kahutara boy, Eli Honeysett. The show is a merging of rural and urban and of our impressive Wairarapa community. Thank you especially to all our committee and members for making this event as great as ever. We couldn’t do it without you all.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2019, IT’S 142 YEARS SINCE THE FIRST WAIRARAPA AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SHOW WAS HELD IN CARTERTON. A lot has certainly changed in those decades but the joy and anticipation of “going to the show” never fades. This year, you can be amazed by the sheer strength of Wellington’s strongmen series. How much is it possible for a person to lift? Get a huge laugh from watching the fun loving individuals who go lawn mower racing and raise money for charity. This year they’re raising funds for young Eli Honeysett from Kahutara who needs a 4 x 4 wheelchair.
Also, returning to enchanted times, revel in the beautiful creatures who dress in famous fairybook characters. Cinderella, Spiderman, Moana, Rapunzel and even the Jedi Master could be lurking! Don’t forget to visit the home industries section and trade displays either. These are hallmarks of any A&P Shows and much loved by all. Last, but not least – side show alley. No matter your age, it’s a must visit. From the candyfloss, hotdogs to the merry-go-round, ghost train and sizzler! Stuff show memories are made of. We welcome you all to this fabulous annual event and hope you go away elated. Thank you for coming.
Watch in awe as the horse riders go through their paces and admire the quality of the sheep and cattle on display.
Then there’s the medieval display which takes you back to times gone by.

MAHONS AMUSEMENT SIDESHOWS PUTTING SMILES ON PEOPLE’S FACES FOR OVER 70 YEARS. The thrill of the fairground burrows deep into people’s psyche once they’ve experienced the wonder of the sideshows and rides. Whatever your age, the magic never fades. Events are never quite complete without the glory of sideshow alley and the Wairarapa A & P Show is no exception. Mahons Amusements will be there, as usual, with bells on. Music, grinning faces, laughter, flashing lights and the thrills coupled with the joy of the family and friends having fun together, make it quite a unique experience. The Carnival rides use a coupon system instead of accepting cash. You pick your favourite ride and buy the necessary number of coupons required.
Individual Coupons are around $1.30 each. Alternatively you can buy discounted packs of coupons to use too and share them amongst friends and family. Roy Mahon was a coal miner working in Huntly in the 1940s. Enthused by his part-time motorcycle daredevil stunts featuring the Wall of Death motorcycle act (pictured), he began offering other fairground amusements to the public in 1948. Today, the company Mahons Amusements are run by second and third generation family members and are New Zealand’s leading carnival company.

ORDER OF THE BOAR HISTORIC CALVARY MEDIEVAL MAJESTY The Order of the Boar is an Upper Hutt based group that specialises in re-creating historic cavalry skills. In particular, the skills of the medieval mounted knight, including the joust. From the early 2000’s through to 2015, the group organised and ran the highly successful International Jousting Tournaments at Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt, as well as many similar displays around the country.
Wairarapa A&P Show | Chester Road | Carterton
As some of the horses have retired due to age, the group has been fairly inactive and most of the experienced jousters moved on to other things. At present there’s one experienced jousting war horse and one experienced skill-at-arms horse remaining. The team has been rebuilding however. It takes patience and time to find a horse with the right temperament for jousting and to train it.
08
Ready to start doing small displays again the group is thrilled to be at the Wairarapa A&P show with new horses Rocky and Ruby who will be joining veteran horses Monty and Will for the show. Over the weekend we will be putting on displays of mounted skills. These
are various exercises on horseback with weapons against a range of targets. These exercises are based on the original training used to train medieval knights. The group is not quite at the stage to do any actual jousting.
There will also be armour and other equipment on hand to view and the group is keen to interact with the public when not riding. Website – www.jousting.co.nz Facebook - https://www.facebook. com/OrderoftheBoar/

LAWNMOWER RACING Lawnmower racing is the newest form of affordable motorsport, according to Alan Gray from Eketahuna, who is part of the Eketahuna Lawn Mower Racing Club, officially established in November 2018. It started out as a few laughs and a bit of fun in the paddock beside his main road home in Eketahuna but has grown exponentially. The three clubs across New Zealand (check out the Eketahuna Facebook page) are all entering lawnmowers for racing at the Wairarapa A&P Show. It’s a special fund raising event for Eli Honeysett, the Kahutara boy wanting to purchase a 4x4 wheelchair. The Eketahuna club meets once a month every second Sunday and currently has around 15 members – both men and women of all ages. Fundraising is what the lawn mowing club is all about – that and putting smiles on people’s faces.
Alan Gray was spurred to have a bit of fun for his late wife Megan, who passed away from cancer early last year. The event was held to gather funds for Arohanui Hospice in Palmerston North which cared for her. The Eketahuna Club now holds an annual fundraising event for the hospice. Enthusiasm is growing and members are now theming their converted lawn mowers with distinctive colours. There’s one called ‘Betty Boop’ and another ‘Ninja Turtle’.
They’re choosing imaginative costumes to enhance the riotous colourful affair which creates hilarious family entertainment. While there’s a serious nature to it all, adhering to national association safety rules (helmets, gloves, kill switches etc), Alan Gray says it’s all about having fun. He’s calling on everyone to come to the Show, enjoy the racing and give liberally to Eli Honseysett’s wheelchair cause. Buckets will be out during the races 10.30am Saturday and Sunday.

FONTERRA COW & TRAIN The Fonterra Co-op children’s train and its fibreglass cow are great ways to show how the company wants fun interaction with the public along with the chance to showcase how important milk is to our daily diet. ELI’S STORY
Wairarapa A&P Show | Chester Road | Carterton
In 2016, Eli Honeysett was just like any other happy five year old growing up on his family’s farm at Kahutara in south Wairarapa, when he was struck down by a virus leaving him paralysed from the neck down and unable to breathe on his own. He now relies on a ventilator.
12
Eli spent 10 months in Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland where he was diagnosed with Acute Flaccid Myelitis – a rare disease which affects the spinal cord, causing loss of muscle tone and reflexes, as well as respiratory failure in severe cases. Three years on, Eli is still keen to be a very active member of his family and
of farm life. He’s furiously trying to raise $45,000 to buy a 4x4 wheelchair. As well as the Fonterra train and cow milking, the A&P Show’s lawn mower racing is hoping to raise dollars for Eli’s more robust wheelchair. His current one, funded by the Wairarapa DHB, and which Eli drives with his mouth, has been wonderful in his recuperation but it has its limitations when it comes to gravel, grass and paddocks. Eli’s mother, Tracey says Eli is the most positive kid you could meet and seems to have taken it all in his stride. “He loves the outdoors and playing with his brothers and friends and
getting out on the farm. Having a 4x4 wheelchair will add a whole new dimension to his life.”

HISTORY OF A&P SHOW Wairarapa A&P Show – the shop window of the agricultural industry – bridging the rural/urban. The Wairarapa A&P Society has been running its Spring Show at the Clareville Complex since the late 1970’s when it moved from the central Carterton town site because of the need for more space. The former racecourse at Clareville was a perfect fit for the A&P Society. Covering 36 hectares, it features its own lake and camping ground. The show had been running for 100 years on that first site, the entrance being grand imposing gates on Belvedere Road. For the early settlers in the Carterton district is was a time
to showcase their finest stock and products (pictured 1908 show). Show Day stopped the town and schools closed. People dressed in their finery for the annual event. With the move to Clareville, the Belvedere Road concrete gates were demolished in 1976. The marble memorial plaques, listing those who died in WWI and WWII
and originally attached to the gates, were stored away and have only recently been uncovered. Society members and the Clareville Trust are keen to have them restored and out on permanent display at the showgrounds. This year’s 2019 show is the 142nd show and promises to be as exciting and lively as ever.

SHEARING YOU CAN ALWAYS EXPECT PLENTY OF ADRENALIN WHEN SOME OF NEW ZEALAND’S TOP SHEARERS AND WOOL HANDLERS GET TOGETHER AT THIS YEAR’S SHOW. It features all the excitement of the Golden Shears competition but has the intimacy of an old-fashioned rural shearing event of yesteryear. Wairarapa shearing contractor, Allan Grant has organised the shearing/ wool handling component of the show for the past eight years. He says you are never sure who will turn up on the day but he’s always confident of presenting good competition. For the wool handlers, the weekend
is especially important as the points they earn go towards the world championship qualifying series. While the prize money is always an incentive, Allan says most competitors are driven more by the recognition gained from winning against their peers. Shearing sports journalist Doug Laing says he is continuously amazed at

DOG TRIALS THE PASSION FOR DOG TRIALLING OOZES FROM STUART HENSON WHEN HE GETS TALKING ABOUT THE SPORT.
Stuart says the experienced competitors make it all look so easy, and of course, like any sport, it’s not. “A good dog slowly educates the sheep and the contest between the animals becomes mesmerising,” says
PHOTO/LORENA CROMBIE Stuart. “We always attract quite a gallery of people.” He’s been Head of Section for Dog Trials for the past 10 years, notching up over 25 years involvement with the A&P shows. Keen to encourage newcomers, he invites sheep dog owners to turn up on the day and literally have a go. There’s always plenty of people around with
experience to give guidance. This year there are two separate competitions judged by Nigel Clark from Waipukurau, an experienced competitor and Matt Murphy from Martinborough, who is relatively new to the sport. The dog trials will be run throughout the day on both Saturday and Sunday at the Wairarapa A&P Show.
Wairarapa A&P Show | Chester Road | Carterton
“Sheepdog trialling is a unique sport in that it’s all based on what we did 150 years ago. We get those wonderful New Zealand heading dogs and put them through their paces, taking them through various obstacles, increasing in difficulty, until the sheep they are leading are safely tucked into the yard.”

CATTLE CATTLE AT THE A&P SHOW – A CAREFUL AND SUCCESSFUL EXERCISE IN BIO-SECURITY After a brief pause in showing thanks to the cattle disease M-Bovis we will see a return of the beef section to Clareville.
The focus for Lisa has been putting in place a bio-security system that reflects not only MPI’s recommended procedures but also one that makes exhibitors comfortable bringing their animals together with other breeders. Not only the arrival times staggered to be able to facilitate wash bays, we also have to disinfect the wash bays between each farm and there is a requirement to keep a two-metre gap between the different farms.
Incoming Wairarapa A&P Beef Chairman Lisa Berthold has been paving the way for exhibitors to again compete and display. With 28 animals competing on Saturday morning for both the Meat and Wool Cup and The Alan Eastergaard Memorial Lifestyle Cup, it has turned out to be one of the highest number of beef cattle seen at Clareville for some years.
Each animal has a special electronic tag number in their ear and that number is sent to MPI for approval prior to show. When they arrive, each ear tag will be electronically checked before any of the animals are unloaded. If the tags don’t match with the numbers submitted, they are refused entry onto the grounds. Once unloaded and washed they are taken to their stall where they will

OVER 500 HORSES There’s over 500 horses and 300 riders competing in a vast range of activities at the Wairarapa A&P Show this year. The show jumping alone is a real draw card for riders, as well as spectators. The huge range (363 classes) includes show jumping; show hunter; breed classes and show classes; small miniature horses through to the heavy Clydesdales. This latter section is always a people’s favourite. their lines between jumps, technical corners and distances between the combination fences. Riders who ‘go clear’ (complete their first round with no faults) will compete in a timed jump-off round to decide the winner. All riders placed in series classes will earn points which are carried through the season.
