Breadcraft Wairarapa

Fancy a career in baking and the food industry??? Breadcraft Wairarapa is calling out for school leavers, and those looking for employment, to be at the cutting edge of an exciting baking, and new product revolution, going on at the bakery in Masterton.

ebel Bakehouse Gluten-Free Original and Gluten Free Spinach and Hemp wraps were launched into stores around New Zealand at the end of October, and they have taken the gluten-free and wider community by storm. They are the highly successful end-result of over a year’s worth of experimentation by Breadcraft’s product development team. So popular, the wraps have flown off the shelves, and Breadcraft has a hard time keeping up. Now, rebels don’t crack under pressure, and neither do the Breadcraft Bakers, but they are looking for some extra hands to join them. Those who are keen to try out baking as a career path, or in the short-term, students home for the summer, needing employment.

“It’s all-hands-on-deck” says Marketing Manager, Poppy Binning, who points out Breadcraft is entering its busiest time of the year over the next few months. This is on the back of sales in October 2020 being the biggest in the company’s 78year history.



PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Matt Jackett I took up the position of Principal at Carterton School at the beginning of this year. We started with a bang by taking 30 students, many teachers and parents to the Round the Bays 6.5km Fun Run in Wellington. I was very proud of our students for taking on this challenge and was amazed by what they achieved. Another memorable moment from Term One, was our annual Carterton School Gala. Our PTA, parents, teachers and students, along with other community organisations, came together to make this event a huge success. During Term Four, we had another successful Pet Day with all types of animals, including ponies and a talking cockatoo. I’m proud to announce that we have a new gumboot throwing record of 30m! We have completed another successful hike up Mount Holdsworth, school production,

and an overnight stay at the Marae. Another highlight has been our students coming in 1st and 3rd place for the Wairarapa Times-Age newspaper competition! This year, we have learnt first hand, that we live in an ever-changing world that needs to work together now more than ever before. We had a student who raised $2200 to help koalas after the devastating Australian fires. We also had students create a safety video that focused on getting to and from school in a sustainable way. Our students have learnt the importance of face-to-face time with their whānau and that learning happens at school and at home. I learnt how lucky I am to be part of such a proud and future-focused community. We have so many things to be proud and appreciative of here in Wairarapa! Next year, we will develop our already motivating school environment by establishing a new astro turf, upgrading our main entrance, modernising our learning spaces and putting some new swings in the playground. Our students are also working closely with community groups such as Kapai Carterton and the Carterton District Council to make Carterton an even better place to be a part of in the future. After winning the Ka Pai Soup, one of our students has received $1000 to spend on a project to help kids be more creative in our community. Watch this space!

Finally, I would like to acknowledge our students, teachers, support staff and whānau. It is a privilege to be leading a school that encompases such a supportive and dedicated group of people.

Team Kawakawa

Team Kōwhai Team Kōwhai 2020 consists of 4 classes from year 3 to 5 here at Carterton School. We have had another busy and exciting year this year starting in Term 1 where our students helped out by making items that could be sold at the school Gala and helping with the fun activities on the day. In term 2 our students participated in our online learning experiences and this was a whole new way of learning for some of our students. They were very successful and found this new way of learning - very stimulating. Term 3 kicked off with the introduction of PrEP [Primary Enterprise Programme] for primary-aged students. In PrEP our students discovered how to manage a business, make and market a product and sell their products at Market Day. Market Day was an amazing success and we were joined by Akonga Maori who had also participated in PrEP. Some of our students also participated in the painting of our school murals supported by Mr Jackman. Our highlights for Term 4 were the whole school Pet Day, athletics and our team’s visit to Forest School following our inquiry into sustainability. What a successful year we have had!

This year Team Kawakawa is made up of three classes from Year Zero to Year Two. We work collaboratively across the three classes. Our Team has a love for play-based learning and this is integrated into our daily learning. Students are highly motivated and are encouraged to give everything a go. Highlights of our learning this year include weekly gardening sessions with Mrs Bullock, PMP, regular biking sessions, a trip to Cobblestones Museum and returning to onsite learning after dropping back to alert level 2.Students have been enjoying learning about keeping safe around water and how to use their scooters safely. We have been focusing on our environment both locally and nationally and have also learnt about our solar system.

Ākonga Māori Ākonga Māori is a Māori enrichment learning environment and programme – open to all learners of any cultural descent. There are two whānau classes that cater for year 0-8. The focus of Te Reo Māori, Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori – all experiences and opportunities

Team Kahikatea Team Kahikatea is 3 classes of Year 6 to 8 students. The focus is on developing independent, life-long learners who are motivated and driven to do their best in all areas of school life. The Team Kahikatea programme is designed to provide a wide range of opportunities along with developing leadership. Students have many responsibilities across the school, such as being part of our Student Leadership group, Enviro group, Kaitiaki Fuss Busters, Road Patrol, PE shed and Milk monitors. A tuakana and teina role has been developed through regular interactions with younger buddy classes. This year a special relationship has been formed through ‘Joy for Generations’ with Carter Court. During 2020 the Year 7 and 8 programme has seen students involved in Technology at Makoura, Cooking with Mr Hill and EOTC experiences including to Rocky Lookout and Castlepoint. The Year 8 Powell Hut excursion was a highlight with the students showing determination and teamwork as they completed this annual challenge in their final year at Carterton School. After many delays, due to Covid-19, the students put on a fantastic performance of their show “Destination World”. We are very proud of what our students have achieved this year. They have represented our school with pride in everything they have done.

At Year 13 senior student leaders have access to two prestigious intercollegiate leadership camps, the first for senior students in Catholic schools in the Wellington and Manawatu regions and the second for students in Marist-based schools across New Zealand.

Confidently Coping with Covid Covid threw an unpredecented curved ball at all schools in 2020. Chanel College was quick to respond. We made sure that all our students had digital devices. Our teachers immediately stepped up to the challenges of the new technology with in-school professional development and provided timetabled Zoom lessons for our students and posted learning support material on Google Classroom that was available 24/7.

A different sort of Leadership Student leaders in New Zealand schools faced unpredecented challenges this year. Our student leaders said: “We had to learn a new way of leading. We had to adapt our way of leading. It wasn’t so much about upfront leading but about behind the scenes leading.”

Once students returned we provided timetabled support and access to extra support twice weekly after school. We thank the staff for their hard work, dedication and generosity and are proud of the resilience our students have shown in dealing not only with Covid but the ongoing postponements and disruptions to normal sporting, cultural and academic schedules. We look forward to a much more settled 2021.

have really supported us.” “The day I remember most is the day we went into Lockdown. It defined our year. It happened so quickly many people were panicking. But we grew strong and when I look back I see how far we have overcome the challenges.” “For me it was the day we came out of Lockdown and we were able to come back to school. There was such relief on everyone’s faces that we were back together again. We were so excited we couldn’t stop talking.” “It was great to see each other again but I also really enjoyed the opportunity to spend more time with my family, Mum and Dad and my sister. We spend more time with each other now.” Other highlights in our covid crazy year that students valued were the senior year level retreats held in South Featherston at the Magnificat Community and when the whole school was finally able to join together for Mass at St Patrick’s Church to celebrate the students who were being baptised or confirmed.

Our gymnasium offers students not only a full basketball court, a netball court, a tennis court, four volleyball courts and five badminton courts, but also a classroom and a fully equipped weights room. We also have an outside turf for sports such as hockey, netball and tennis. Our new Fitness Centre, funded by a group of very supportive parents in the Chanel College PTFA is headed towards the fundraising finishing line so that the new Fitness Centre will be able to be installed next year.

Smaller classes allow teachers more opportunities for one-on-one contact with students to address their individual learning needs and to develop resilience. We have doubled our learning support team from four to eight. From Year 7, students have access to specialist teachers in Science, Technology, Languages and the Arts (Visual Art, Drama and Music). A Guidance Counsellor and a school nurse are also available. Additional support offered through Homework Club helps to ensure that all eligible students are ready to achieve their personal milestones in NCEA Levels 1 -3.

Eric Daubé Dalefield’s rural setting is it’s point of difference. The children and staff celebrate the rich environment spending a lot of time outdoors, learning from the land. The staff have done themselves proud this year, going that extra mile to ensure that our tamariki are nurtured, proud of who they are, and challenged in their learning. Developing a strong curriculum that uses the best of our environment and wider community ensures that our tamariki have a strong sense of who they are and a belief that they can make a difference. I thank the community and especially the board of trustees and the home and school committee for their tireless work for the school. For the students thank you for making coming to work such a pleasure.

As all of us understand, 2020 will go down in history. Covid aside there is still a huge amount to celebrate and schools have been able to demonstrate the positive and vital role they play in their communities. This is us in 2020 was our tagline at the beginning of the year. This encapsulated our place in the country, South Wairarapa and the aspirations of our school and community. Me and my environment stemmed from mahi last year.

why this is so. For some students the opportunity to have a balance of family and school work was a highly successful model and for others the constant of the teacher available through the likes of Zoom, Seesaw, Google Classroom and email etc worked. Don’t leave town till you’ve seen the country was a tagline from 1980’s TV ad campaign and we have used that since lockdown to again celebrate what Dalefield, Carterton, Wairarapa and Aotearoa have to offer. Term three started with the whole school visiting Pūkaha, Mt Bruce. It was exciting travelling by bus together then stepping out into a world of wildlife and peace.

We started exploring what it really means to be in our special place here but also the impact that we have on our environment.

This was followed by a Year seven and eight overnight trip to Zealandia, which was for them the icing on the cake and the chance to make connections.

When lockdown hit, the big ideas here became the glue for the online learning. Creativity and outstanding involvement of Whānau meant that our children could explore their backyards and environment, posting examples of the learning for classmates and teachers.

Mostly however our students take away hope for the future and there is no better example for them than seeing a kākā feeding in a tree in the middle of the street in central Wellington, whilst we waited for the bus to Zealandia.

MAKE CHANGE IN YOUR COMMUNITY Are you passionate about making Wairarapa the best place it can be for young people? Do you have ideas about what could be done to enhance our region? The Wairarapa Youth Council is on the lookout for people aged 12-24 years to come and make a difference. The council meets regularly to talk about things impacting Wairarapa and how to make sure youth are included in decisions being made by our local councils.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU? There are huge benefits to being part of the Wairarapa Youth Council. It: y builds confidence and public speaking skills y develops skills required for leadership and effective teamwork y gives you exposure to the decision-makers in our region, including Elected Members and Mayors y builds understanding of local government and civics. …and of course, it looks great on your CV!

OWNERS MESSAGE Nicola Burling It is my pleasure to own and manage Good Beginnings Centre’s along with my husband Joe. We have a team of qualified and specialised teachers who have a passion for working with children under the age of five. Teachers work alongside the children to install a love of learning, fostering independence and school readiness. Our curriculum is based on children’s interests and during 2020 we have been on many learning journeys. As you can imagine each day brings delight as a child develops a new skill or discovers something for the first time. The teaching team looks forward to continuing our support for families and whānau in helping their children to become confident competent learners. The indoor and outdoor environments have been specifically developed to cater for children less than 3 years of age. The Centre is open Monday to Friday between the hours of 7.00am to 5.30pm, 50 weeks of the year. Teachers believe continuity between the home and the centre is paramount. Teachers work within Magda Gerber’s Educaring Approach, each child is allocated a primary caregiver to ensure strong relationships are formed so children and parents feel a sense of belonging. Individual books support communication between the home and centre and teachers take great pride in providing informative portfolios of each child’s learning journey. ERO visited the centre in 2017 and found infants and toddlers benefit from warm relationships with teachers who are sensitive to their cues. They work alongside children, supporting their developing interests and independence. Teachers liaise closely

with whānau to align activities and care routines to those children experience at home. Children are offered a rich playbased programme that includes a range of active exploration opportunities. Children’s transitions into and out of the centre are well considered, parents and children are well supported at these times. Te reo me ngā tikanga Māori are clearly evident in the environment and interactions. Children with diverse needs are well supported. Internal evaluations are collaborative and result in improvements for the benefit of children.

Good Beginnings Educare Centre was established in the early 1990s and continues to be in high demand. The centre is housed in a refurbished villa and is open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 5.30pm, 50 weeks of the year. The Centre is spacious, homely, and the inviting environment supports child-initiated play, catering uniquely for children aged 2 to 5 years of age. The Centre’s programme is developed in consultation with parents and children and based strongly on children’s dispositions, individual needs and interests. Throughout the day children can chose from a vast range of learning experiences in a carefully prepared environment. Teachers and children interact in responsive reciprocal ways to support learning experiences that are meaningful to all. The Education Review Office visited in 2018 and found the centre is well placed to promote positive learning outcomes for children. Teachers are responsible and encouraging and support children’s engagement in learning experiences. Children confidently and actively particpate in rich learning opportunities which increase their understanding of reading, writing and mathematics and are successfully included in programmes in meaningful ways. Te reo me ngā tikanga Māori are intergrated throughout the programme. Children with special learning needs take part in an inclusive programme and teachers support children’s seamless transition to school. Teachers are very reflective and collaborative. Literacy Aotearoa – Masterton 130 STUDENTS

SITE CO-ORDINATOR Carol Wald It is estimated that over one million adults in New Zealand have literacy difficulties in their everyday lives. Literacy and numeracy issues can show in a variety of ways and nearly always have the effect of holding someone back. We know that people with literacy and numeracy barriers need plenty of support and encouragement. Nationally over 8000 people each year complete programmes with Literacy Aotearoa. These people are predominantly people at risk, with no qualifications or low education levels. Some of these people are already attending tertiary training programmes or in the workforce requiring workplace and/or intensive literacy support. A large proportion of our target demographic are Maori, Pasifika and Youth – and we also run programmes designed for seniors, newcomers and for workplaces/ businesses.

The Masterton delivery site of Literacy Aotearoa has continued to run courses this year despite the challenges experienced during the Covid-19 lockdown periods. Online classes were offered during lockdown but these were not as easy to implement as not all adult learners had access to internet, data or practical devices. Where possible Tutors did their best to communicate with the learners, during this period. Face-to-face, classes operated at Level 2 and below.

This year provided special challenges and MPS staff and students rose to the occasion, as everyone learnt about Zoom and Distance Learning. When we came back to school we all enjoyed our attractive environment, with well-maintained grounds which provide a great place for students to grow, learn and play safely. Our students can enjoy the native plantings, fruit trees and vegetable gardens. Watching Monarch Butterflies hatch and seeds turn into vegetable plants are great learning opportunities. Student art is displayed in and around the school in the form of hall, hallway and classroom displays, with decorated pou and murals situated around the grounds. We have some wonderful artists at MPS. MPS encourages students to be involved and have a say in their lives and in their community. We recognise leadership potential and foster development of individual skills and talent. Students are offered a wide range of opportunities to participate in the arts and special programmes. We also recognise that some students will need extra support and we ensure support programmes are matched to the needs of students. The Masterton Primary School community works together in partnership. All who come here receive a warm welcome. We are a health promoting school. We have three pou, designed and painted by students, placed strategically away from the school gate so that parents can drop their children off safely, but close enough for them to walk to and from school. Great for health and fitness. Breakfast Club, run by volunteers, opens at 8am for those in need of some cereal and a chat to start the day (school starts at 8.45am). Later in the day we have ‘Fruit in Schools’ and school milk during ‘Feed and Read’. Students’ lunch eating time is supervised by staff to make sure everyone eats before they go off to play or take part

in lunchtime practices. Our 40-minute lunchtime is just enough time to have a break without being too long, so problems are less likely to arise. Our comfortable, well stocked library is a great place for students who like a peaceful playtime reading or playing a board game. Finishing at 2.30pm means we get the best part of the day for learning. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) MPS expectations, are taught throughout the school so students feel safe and supported in class and at play, and Circle Time offers opportunities for them to discuss problems they may have. During the year we have EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom) Tent City, school camp and class trips, providing opportunities to learn about our local area and environmental issues. Pukaha, Mt Bruce Bird Reserve was a highlight for many students this year and students are now motivated to take action and fundraise to support Pukaha. We hold a Silver Enviroschools Award and integrate Education for Sustainability throughout our curriculum planning and student inquiry learning. Student involvement in extra-curricular school life such as Choir, Kapa Haka, Jump Jam, sports teams, School Librarians, Road patrol, running assemblies and working with whanau/buddy classes has continued where possible around Covid restrictions. I felt anxious about starting at Masterton Intermediate as a new Year Eight student because I did not know anyone at all. However, having an interview with my 2020 teacher two days before school was due to begin, helped me to learn a lot more about the MIS values and some of the things that I wanted to get involved in during the year. Many have responded to these requests and have made the most of the opportunities available to them. We look forward to the 2021 school year with great hope and enthusiasm.

This was a new initiative for our kura in which our Year Seven and new Year Eight students were able to come into school on February 3 or 4 to meet their kaiako to talk about themselves and their interests. This was a very

ARTS ENRICHMENT This year we held our Arts Enrichment programmes in terms two and three over two full days which proved to be very successful. There were 18 different arts-related activities to choose from each term and 90 percent of students received their first or second selections.

I attended both learning conferences with my parents. The thing that I liked most was that I was able to express myself about my learning goals. My main goal for 2020 was to be selected for the MIS kapa haka rōpu to compete at the regional competition in Lower Hutt. I feel immense satisfaction that I have achieved this goal. We were honoured to have a visit on Friday, August 26, from Perry Rush, President of the New Zealand Principals Federation, to view these programmes in action. Perry enjoyed his short time with us and even got to show off some of his dance moves.

In Arts Enrichment in term two my group made mosaic letters using smashed plates and cups which we decorated with paper flowers and beads. In term three, we made glitter art using paintings that we had made and covered them with gloss mixed with glitter. We also made a collection of wooden triangles representing aspects of what we do at MIS. In both of these programmes, I really enjoyed having the freedom to express my own ideas in a creative way. RUGBY EXCHANGES WITH WAINUIOMATA INTERMEDIATE Our first XV boys rugby team played a home and away series against Wainuiomata Intermediate who had won all of their games over the past 3 seasons. A narrow 29-31 loss at Memorial Park was followed up with a 17-all away draw at William Jones Park, to give the hosts the rights to hold the Piri Weepu Trophy until we play again in June, 2021. We were disappointed that we did not come away with a win but our boys kept their heads up in both games. Personally, I really enjoyed this experience. Wainuiomata Intermediate showed us fantastic manaakitanga for the second game. (Konnor Vainu - Room 8, Year Eight)

SPORTS EXCHANGE WITH WADESTOWN SCHOOL A very enjoyable winter sports exchange with Wadestown Primary School took place on Tuesday, September 15. Mixed teams of boys and girls in Year 7 and Year 8 teams competed in football and hockey with MIS very convincing winners in both hockey matches. Wadestown turned the tables in football with a convincing win in the Year 7 game and a close 4-3 victory in the Year 8 encounter where Jazz Shailer was an outstanding MIS performer. I think that the Wadestown students really enjoyed coming to MIS. They loved our sports grounds and farm because they have hardly any grass at their school. (Maddie Kennedy - Room 8, Year Eight)

STUDENT LEADERS Each of our classes selected a Year 8 boy and girl as their student leaders in February. This group meets each month to organise activities as well as running our assemblies. Some of their work is done outside of school hours. I have really enjoyed meeting new people and working on projects both in and out of school. I felt proud wearing the school blazer when our class hosted the first assembly on Wednesday, February 18 ... even though it was too big for me. (Abbey Monastra - Room 18, Year Eight)

SYNDICATE DANCE PROGRAMME & COMPETITION In term three, each of our five syndicates worked with Caitlyn Duffy, an ex-MIS student, from the Footsteps Dance Company, to develop skills and confidence in preparation for the dance competition which was held on Tuesday, September 22. This was an excellent programme which will continue in 2021 and beyond. The winning syndicate this year was Kaituna (Rooms 15, 16, 17 and 18.) We were nervous beforehand but when the music started our fears disappeared. I did not think that we would win but was overwhelmed when they announced that “Kaituna” were the 2020 dance champions. (Georgie Moore - Room 17 - Year Seven)

WRISSA BASEBALL WINNERS On Tuesday, October 20, our MIS team won the Wellington Region Intermediate Schools Sports Association (WRISSA) Baseball competition which was played at Fraser Park in Lower Hutt. They won all four of their games including a 10-6 success against Evans Bay Intermediate in the final. 31 runs were scored with only 11 conceded. Genuine Savaliga was our Most Valuable Player and has huge potential in this code. It was a great tournament for MIS, competing against some excellent players in each of the other schools. I felt very proud when I managed to strike out the last two batters in the final. (Maggie Shields - Room 10, Year Seven)

The bike track at MIS is almost completed and will be nearly 1.5 kilometres in length. This track has been designed with considerable input from our students with Xhan Jones, Bayle Griffin, Ged Billing and Jaiden Duncan taking a leading role. The support from Glen Malcolm, Holly Hullena, Gill Stewart and Andy Freeman has been greatly appreciated. It was a lot of fun planning the design and features for the MIS bike track. I also liked finding out about the different sizes and prices for the shipping container that will store 30 bikes. It was a cool experience working with adults to get this awesome project done. This syndicate event has been contested since 2015 but this year we performed our school haka, “E mātahi ana, e mataara!” for the first time as a whole school.

I was lucky to get my first choice which was the MIS Amazing Race. I enjoyed working in groups of four because I met some new friends. Students are able to articulate about their three learning goals as well as reflect on their positive achievements. 85% of families supported their child by attending these conferences and we will strive to gain a 100% response rate, hopefully to be achieved in 2021.

On Friday evening, August 7, 40 students from the MIS choir performed in the Vocal Spectacular at Wairarapa College.

This year was a very big year for me because I raised over $1000 in the fun run and I was the number one student on the leaderboard in the school. This event is a school fundraising project for all students to get involved in. I was able to raise $1074.96. I would like to thank the many kind neighbours who sponsored me.

way to finish than with a trip to H20 Xtream in Upper Hutt for a swim and fun on the slides! The biggest highlight of the year was our school production ‘Ye-Ha!’ It was hard work but we got better and better with every practice. We all had speaking parts and costumes, we learnt lots of songs, helped build props and came up with our own stage designs! It was a massive night out in Pirinoa and the Community Hall was packed! We felt like true stars! Being a Silver Enviroschool, we really enjoy learning about how to look after our environment and maintain our edible food gardens. It helps to equip us with an appreciation of living sustainably, skills that will last our lifetime. We love entering in gardening and agricultural competitions and have a steady production of worm wee which we sell and is always in hot demand! Next year we will get bees and make our orchard and gardens even better!

At Pirinoa we have heaps of trees to climb, a big field to play in and a cool swimming pool for the hot summer days. We have a big sandpit too! Here we are more like a big family, our older kids love playing and helping guide the juniors in the classrooms and outside too. We get to go to heaps of sports and fun trips to help our learning.

Early in the year we had our first trip to the beach at Ngawi to see the seals and spend some time fossicking around the rock pools. We love our local environment and make the most of it!

We celebrated Matariki by taking part in what has become a tradition running for three years now. We planted a fruit tree in our orchard, sang some local waiata, and talked about how Matariki is about new beginnings at the start of a new year, especially as we knew we would be getting a new principal! In Term 3 we went to the ‘Space Place’ at the Carter Observatory in Wellington. We had an awesome time learning through hands-on interactive displays and activities, what better

Our Centres Our centres in the Wairarapa region have continued to thrive, despite the challenges that this year has brought. Our Centre Managers, their amazing teaching teams and the strong relationships they have with our wonderful centre families have meant that our centres have continued to flourish and build on their accomplishments in this past year. Emma Thompson, who manages our Dot Kids Early Learning Centre in Martinborough with just a year in the role, has led the centre from strength to strength. Maintaining a healthy roll through what has been a challenging year for most, along with introducing a wonderful new nutritional programme to the centre, she and her team have built even stronger relationships with their families. Sam Gordon is the manager at Dot Kids Greytown. She is the longest serving Manager of our Wairarapa centres and brings a wealth of experience with her from previous leadership roles. The strong and supportive nature of our Managers’ relationships enables the sharing of ideas, training and support making for a strong team across the region, that all the community will benefit. Donna Harper is our charismatic Manager at Dot Kids Carterton, priding herself on developing strong partnerships with the centre children and parents. The centre has undergone a fabulous transformation of their playground area in recent months, much to the delight of our children and the community, including passers-by. Kerry Le Roux manages our CubbyHouse Masterton centre, also priding herself on the positive, strong connections she has with the

families in the centre, which has also seen the centre flourish this year. Our Wairarapa centres have all experienced many positive achievements and outcomes as a group over the past 12 months with these talented and hardworking Managers at the helm, supported by their amazing teaching teams.

One of these achievements has been to enhance their meals and menus with a new nutritional programme called Nourish, based on NZ Heart Foundation’s, Healthy Heart – Gold Award for Early Childhood Centres. While all our Wairarapa centres provide fresh and cooked meals for the children in their care, our centres are in various stages of introducing the Nourish programme. Our Nourish recipes are dietitian approved and have been thoughtfully designed in line with the NZ Food & Nutrition Guidelines and the Ministry of Health (MOH) Healthy Eating for babies, toddlers and children. Our centres continue to strive to improve the services that we offer, seeing mealtimes as a special opportunity that allows us to not only provide nourishing food but educate children

about healthy food choices and relationships with food. Across the centres we have some very passionate teachers who are committed to providing the best possible learning environment for the children. We are continuously working to developing true partnerships with the families, setting children on their education journey with a lifelong passion for learning. Our centres all have open door policies and are more than happy to have conversations about what they offer in their individual environments. We value our community and place a strong emphasis on learning how to serve others. Our school is named after St Teresa of Avila who championed showing God’s love to others through your actions. Over 500 years after she was born we are carrying on this tradition by being OnTRACK in our learning and our behaviour. On-TRACK stands for Think, Responsible, Achieve, Courageous and Kind. All of these are values we see and hear, every day, in our classrooms and playground. With dedicated staff, supportive families and innovative programmes, we are proud of our school and how this approach grows our students’ well-being.

Innovative programmes are key to having engaged and motivated students at St Teresa’s School. We follow the message of Pope Francis in caring for our environment and the earth. Our senior students have continued their role as kaitiaki of the Donald Creek in Featherston. Students are working to create a better environment for the long fin eels and micro-invertebrates by planting the banks of the creek and installing eel motels – pipes that provide shade and shelter as the water heats up during the summer months.

of Pae Tu Mokau o Tauira, Featherston. Our students are working collaboratively to retell these legends through dance, drama or digital technology. In Term 3 we produced the Fractions in Action Show which combined concepts about fractions with music, drama, dance and visual art. The Senior students wrote and produced their own performances while our Junior students discovered the effect of fractions when Humpty Dumpty fell off the wall! From cooking to computer programming and collaborating to share computer skills and knowledge, our students are engaged and connected to each other and our community. Projects such as these give meaning to learning mathematics, reading and writing.

We are supported by a wonderful community which supports all our activities, including fundraising. We are very excited about our new turf playground and the fantastic cover over it. We now have a place to play in shade in summer and undercover on wet windy days.

The community science table and shelter will be installed at Donald’s Creek shortly with the assistance of the Council and many community groups. Our junior students have continued to develop our school orchard and gardens. With the Featherston Organic Group, they created beneficial insect hotels and planted out pallet gardens. We are looking forward to the students eating the fruit and vegetables they have grown. In Term 1 we walked to Te Wakiti and listened to Warren Maxwell retell three of the legends

Tinui School has a roll of 38 students split into a junior and senior class. The school this year, like other schools, has had its challenges but has pulled together and come through these admirably. Although faced with challenges we have been able to have a production (Tinui Talent Show) which was very exciting for the students. They had wonderful acts and made the night a huge success. Unfortunately due to Covid and bad weather we were unable to participate in our Cluster Schools Athletics and Cross Country, however we ran our own Cross Country and Athletics days. Pets Day was also a big success with both the children and pets showing off their skills in the ring. And running a very profitable wee food and craft market.

The school’s learning theme for Term 2 & 3 has been “Our Backyard”. This has been a journey of discovery, learning about our past and exploring what is going on in our community. The children have been involved in a native walkway planting and starting our very own native nursery to help replant the local farms and waterways and other fragile habitats. This will be followed up with a whole school trip to Zealandia in December. The school has a very supportive community which helps drive and sustain the school. We have some excellent facilities including an all purpose turf, a school swimming pool and spacious grounds. Additionally within easy reach we have the Tinui Anzac walkway and Castlepoint beach which extends our learning outside the classroom.

Poto College House The Jewel in the Crown 2020 has been one out of the box! The year started with the excitement of hostel families and awesome supporters joining the Poto College House staff and PCH Trust to celebrate the securing of the lease to run the hostel independently from Wairarapa College. A historic moment in the history of PCH. Almost as soon as the event was over we heard of Covid 19 (Coronavirus) and the world changed! I’m proud to say however, our boarders, their whanau and our staff got on with the lockdown, ensuring boarders were still engaged with each other remotely, and organising their safe return without too much drama. For management it was awesome to have the boarders back into hostel routine and life - especially study, cultural activities and for a lot of them sports. Our Poto College House Head girl, Molly Donald, reflected on the year. The Coronavirus pandemic certainly was the thing that separated 2020 from any other year. However, returning to PCH after lockdown to see her many friends, returning to her busy role of Head Girl of Wairarapa College and her numerous other voluntary community commitments were really good memories. One of biggest thrills was training at the gym again and returning to 1st XI Hockey team (even if it was a short season) with 9 of her fellow PCH boarders. Other highlights for Molly were the Wairarapa College Sports Foundation & PCH fundraiser where she got to meet Sumo Stevenson. Molly’s time at PCH is coming to end after spending her past four years living at the hostel where she has made lifelong friends and many memories.

The PCH Trust & PCH fundraising committee have dedicated so much of their time to the success of the hostel, and it is paying off. We have invested a lot into the renovations of the hostel including making the Manager’s Cottage compliant; completing upgrading the junior boys’ ablution block; purchasing a 12-seater van to transport our busy boarders, and also undertaking significant work on all of the boilers. This is the start of some big plans for PCH moving forward which requires continued fundraising and support from local agencies. Poto College House is a vibrant and busy place. We encourage boarders to make the most of every opportunity available to them in sport, culture, and the arts. Academic excellence is a high priority and structured prep times are an integral part of achieving this. KINDERGARTEN IS A GOOD CHOICE FOR WAIRARAPA FAMILIES Did you know that there are 11 kindergartens in Wairarapa offering free care and education for children from two years old, and under two in one kindergarten? Manaia Kindergarten.

Whānau Manaaki Kindergartens is the notfor-profit organisation that supports all our kindergartens. Our name means the caring family of kindergartens and that is exactly what we offer your children. We have options for your family in Masterton, Carterton, Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough. Most of our kindergartens offer school hours, but Kahurangi in Masterton is open for longer and for 48 weeks of the year. Kahurangi also takes children under two, who also recieve 20 hours free. Una Williams Kindergarten, Masterton West Kindergarten and Greytown Kindergarten are open for most of the year, while the rest offer school terms.
