Breadcraft Wairarapa

Fancy a career in baking and the food industry??? Breadcraft Wairarapa is calling out for school leavers, and those looking for employment, to be at the cutting edge of an exciting baking, and new product revolution, going on at the bakery in Masterton.

R

ebel Bakehouse Gluten-Free Original and Gluten Free Spinach and Hemp wraps were launched into stores around New Zealand at the end of October, and they have taken the gluten-free and wider community by storm. They are the highly successful end-result of over a year’s worth of experimentation by Breadcraft’s product development team. So popular, the wraps have flown off the shelves, and Breadcraft has a hard time keeping up. Now, rebels don’t crack under pressure, and neither do the Breadcraft Bakers, but they are looking for some extra hands to join them. Those who are keen to try out baking as a career path, or in the short-term, students home for the summer, needing employment.

“It’s all-hands-on-deck” says Marketing Manager, Poppy Binning, who points out Breadcraft is entering its busiest time of the year over the next few months. This is on the back of sales in October 2020 being the biggest in the company’s 78year history.

“You’ve nailed it. These are absolutely amazing. Thank you for making an edible wrap. They don’t snap, taste delish and I love that I can eat straight from the pack. Best GF product of the year.”

“Already a massive hit with virtually all the coeliac group in NZ. Thank you guys so much for going the extra mile to produce such an awesome product.”

“We purchased two packets off recommendations from the Coeliac FB page. OMG! Best wraps EVER! So much so, that our whole family prefers these over the other gluten-free brands. Can’t rave about them enough. Thank you so much for developing a wrap that doesn’t crumble or go stale as soon as the package is open.”

“Game changer! We love your wraps and lunchboxes for my little coeliac are changed forever.”

“Best wraps ever. No competition. Spinach & hemp. Amazing. Thank you. Thank you.”

“My summer lunches are looking a lot happier.”

“These are amazing. Please keep them around forever.”

“These are, without question, one of the best GF products around, and vegan friendly. Thank you.”

“Breadcraft offers great employment opportunities working in the food industry. “There are baking qualifications and apprenticeships to gain which are recognised globally, and there’s the fun of working in a team environment,” says Binning. So keen to get new people on board, following the latest wrap success story, Breadcraft is offering a scheme – ‘Bring a mate to work’. This will result in a $500 ‘thank you’ to the existing worker. The perks of working in a bakery mean Breadcraft employees are able to take home two free loaves of bread per day! It is working towards becoming a Living Wage employer, and there are regular wage increments once employees are settled in the company. Back to the wraps which have caused this upsurge. The Rebel gluten-free wraps pass what Poppy Binning calls the ‘scrunch test’. Not only do they taste very good, but they are soft, pliable, and most importantly, do not crumble when rolled up.

Don’t take her word for it though … read the awesome Rebel Bakehouse Facebook reviews: 

“These are the best wraps on the market, soft, fold and wrap well. Amazing.”

“I’ve eaten so many of these wraps now; they are SO good! I’m not sure I can keep them long enough to actually cook with them.”

Sharing the joy of making music with the residents of Carter court.

TEAM LEADER Emma Dean Kia Ora Koutou, I joined the team here at Carterton Preschool Littlies late last year and have since had the privilege of being promoted to team leader. It is such an honour to work alongside the rest of the team and our parents/whanau during the most precious years of a child’s life. There isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t smile in delight in sharing a child’s achievement or discovery of the exciting world around them. A big thanks to our amazing team for all their hard work, their commitment and dedication in what has been a challenging and uncertain year for all. We would also like to express a heartful thanks to all our parents and extended whanau for their ongoing support. It has been a big year here at Carterton Preschool Littlies with lots of changes not only to our centre whanau (with the addition of new teachers and tamariki) but also to our centre environment too. We have continued to develop our outside play areas and have plans to add to this further in the coming few months (including a mural depicting local areas and a new vegetable garden which will be used to help introduce the children to sustainability). As part of our philosophy we value the importance of community involvement and trips within the local community. We have been involved in community events such as raising money for the Wellington Free Ambulance onesie day. We also try to get out into the community as much as possible including trips to preschool. We also take the toddlers on weekly trips to Fensham bush reserve where they can explore nature in an unhurried way, learn about mindfulness and develop a sense of wairuatanga. We have also ridden the train to Masterton and back and visited the pet shop to purchase a new pet ÿsh for the centre. One of the highlights of the year has been starting up monthly visits to Carter Court rest home. These visits are well anticipated and enjoyed by both age groups and the tamariki enjoy

Another big part of our philosophy is free movement and the belief that children develop naturally in an unhurried way. Children are given time and space to develop their physical skills at their own pace. We have purchased many new resources throughout the year to continue to expand and challenge their ever-increasing skills. These include a balance board, trampoline, and lots of new climbing equipment.

We look forward to the rest of the year; seeing where this takes us and making many more precious memories.

TEAM LEADER Jessica De Menech Kia ora koutou, I have been a Kaiako with the Carterton Preschool whˆnau for almost 11 years and have recently had the opportunity to become Team Leader. I feel very privileged to lead such a passionate team of Kaiako who strive every day to improve their practice, provide a rich engaging curriculum, and to create a “home away from home” for tamariki and their whˆnau. As we all know, 2020 has been a year of uncertainty with the covid-19 pandemic a˝ecting us all. I would like to take a moment to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our parents and extended whˆnau for your kindness, patience, aroha and unwavering support of the Preschool team throughout this time. I feel that because of recent times, we are a stronger, more tight knit community, which is special to be a part of. Nau mai, haere mai! Celebrating the triumphs & experiences of education in Wairarapa

What a fun and interesting year at Carterton Preschool! We started on a high after being audited by the Education Review O˜ce. For the second time in a row their report gave us the highest rating of level 4 - Very Well Placed. Their ÿndings re˛ected the hard work of our team of dedicated Kaiako who consistently strive to provide a high quality learning environment and curriculum full of experiences to extend the knowledge of our tamariki; “Children are very well supported to become self-directed learners. They are highly engaged in sustained learning activities and empowered to lead their own learning.” “Teachers are very responsive to and inclusive of children’s diverse cultures, languages, and diverse learning needs. Leaders provide a high-quality environment for learning.” Continuing through the year we’ve had plenty of adventure, bike days, dress-

Maddie Gidden’s teaching her friends about calves and farm life.

ups, baking, gardening and trips into the community. In return, we have received manaaki and support from our community. For example, Hammonds Spreading brought a big transport truck for the tamariki to explore. The pataitai (curiosity) and imagination of the tamariki shone as they investigated whether the bright yellow truck might be a transformer!

Riparian planting of harakeke at the Mangatarere Stream. Soaking up the sun in our new front playground.

The tamariki have contributed locally and globally by supporting Onesie Day, Red Heart Day, Da˝odil Day and sponsoring our World Vision child Kenamo. We have visited the Giddens family’s dairy farm, as well as our weekly visits to the Mangatarere Stream. The whenua at the Stream has provided diverse learning experiences around sustainability and caring for Papat˙ˆnuku. Through summer and autumn, the tamariki experienced ÿrsthand the e˝ects of drought as we watched the water in the stream dry up to nothing. Exploring the habitats, ecosystems and biodiversity at the stream and in the ngˆhere along the banks of the stream facilitates a lot of; Haututu (exploring), Pataitai (questioning/ curiosity) and Maramatanga (developing understandings/lateral thinking). We are now helping to do more riparian planting to control erosion at the stream.

Exploring ao t°roa (our natural world) after some welcome rain.

We are busier than ever celebrating birthdays, graduations, and welcoming new families into our Preschool whˆnau. There are so many exciting projects and events coming up, with the next being our ˛oat for the Carterton Christmas parade. We might see you there!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Matt Jackett I took up the position of Principal at Carterton School at the beginning of this year. We started with a bang by taking 30 students, many teachers and parents to the Round the Bays 6.5km Fun Run in Wellington. I was very proud of our students for taking on this challenge and was amazed by what they achieved. Another memorable moment from Term One, was our annual Carterton School Gala. Our PTA, parents, teachers and students, along with other community organisations, came together to make this event a huge success. During Term Four, we had another successful Pet Day with all types of animals, including ponies and a talking cockatoo. I’m proud to announce that we have a new gumboot throwing record of 30m! We have completed another successful hike up Mount Holdsworth, school production,

and an overnight stay at the Marae. Another highlight has been our students coming in 1st and 3rd place for the Wairarapa Times-Age newspaper competition! This year, we have learnt first hand, that we live in an ever-changing world that needs to work together now more than ever before. We had a student who raised $2200 to help koalas after the devastating Australian fires. We also had students create a safety video that focused on getting to and from school in a sustainable way. Our students have learnt the importance of face-to-face time with their whānau and that learning happens at school and at home. I learnt how lucky I am to be part of such a proud and future-focused community. We have so many things to be proud and appreciative of here in Wairarapa! Next year, we will develop our already motivating school environment by establishing a new astro turf, upgrading our main entrance, modernising our learning spaces and putting some new swings in the playground. Our students are also working closely with community groups such as Kapai Carterton and the Carterton District Council to make Carterton an even better place to be a part of in the future. After winning the Ka Pai Soup, one of our students has received $1000 to spend on a project to help kids be more creative in our community. Watch this space!

Finally, I would like to acknowledge our students, teachers, support staff and whānau. It is a privilege to be leading a school that encompases such a supportive and dedicated group of people.

Team Kawakawa This year Team Kawakawa is made up of three classes from Year Zero to Year Two. We work collaboratively across the three classes. Our Team has a love for play-based learning and this is integrated into our daily learning. Students are highly motivated and are encouraged to give everything a go. Highlights of our learning this year include weekly gardening sessions with Mrs Bullock, PMP, regular biking sessions, a trip to Cobblestones Museum and returning to onsite learning after dropping back to alert level 2.Students have been enjoying learning about keeping safe around water and how to use their scooters safely. We have been focusing on our environment both locally and nationally and have also learnt about our solar system.

Team Kōwhai Team Kōwhai 2020 consists of 4 classes from year 3 to 5 here at Carterton School. We have had another busy and exciting year this year starting in Term 1 where our students helped out by making items that could be sold at the school Gala and helping with the fun activities on the day. In term 2 our students participated in our online learning experiences and this was a whole new way of learning for some of our students. They were very successful and found this new way of learning - very stimulating. Term 3 kicked off with the introduction of PrEP [Primary Enterprise Programme] for primary-aged students. In PrEP our students discovered how to manage a business, make and market a product and sell their products at Market Day. Market Day was an amazing success and we were joined by Akonga Maori who had also participated in PrEP. Some of our students also participated in the painting of our school murals supported by Mr Jackman. Our highlights for Term 4 were the whole school Pet Day, athletics and our team’s visit to Forest School following our inquiry into sustainability. What a successful year we have had!

Team Kahikatea Team Kahikatea is 3 classes of Year 6 to 8 students. The focus is on developing independent, life-long learners who are motivated and driven to do their best in all areas of school life. The Team Kahikatea programme is designed to provide a wide range of opportunities along with developing leadership. Students have many responsibilities across the school, such as being part of our Student Leadership group, Enviro group, Kaitiaki Fuss Busters, Road Patrol, PE shed and Milk monitors. A tuakana and teina role has been developed through regular interactions with younger buddy classes. This year a special relationship has been formed through ‘Joy for Generations’ with Carter Court. During 2020 the Year 7 and 8 programme has seen students involved in Technology at Makoura, Cooking with Mr Hill and EOTC experiences including to Rocky Lookout and Castlepoint. The Year 8 Powell Hut excursion was a highlight with the students showing determination and teamwork as they completed this annual challenge in their final year at Carterton School. After many delays, due to Covid-19, the students put on a fantastic performance of their show “Destination World”. We are very proud of what our students have achieved this year. They have represented our school with pride in everything they have done.

Chanel College is proud to be part of a tradition of Wairarapa Catholic secondary education stretching back over 120 years. Our values of Catholic Community, Honesty, Acceptance, Never Giving Up, Excellence and Love are anchored in the charisms of our founding Religious Orders, the Brigidine Sisters and the Marist Brothers, and flow into our motto, “All Through Christ”. We look forward to working with you and your families in the years ahead.

New Leadership Team at Chanel Principal, Debi Marshall-Lobb is working with two new members in the Chanel College leadership team. Nigel Bailey, Deputy Principal: “The students here are wonderful. I really enjoy working with our Principal. Our colleagues are very supportive. I really like the way the college is moving forward together in unity. I think teachers and school leaders should lead by example. Personally I am enjoying streamlining our systems so that we can make life easier for staff, students and parents alike.” Chris Senior, Assistant Principal: “The fantastic attitude and dedication of our students has blown me away. here, they always take it on. I enjoy working with a positive, friendly and supportive staff who are focused on the students and their success inside and outside of the classroom. Parents can be sure that their children will get a holistic education at Chanel that will enable them to achieve individual success.”

Confidently Coping with Covid Covid threw an unpredecented curved ball at all schools in 2020. Chanel College was quick to respond. We made sure that all our students had digital devices. Our teachers immediately stepped up to the challenges of the new technology with in-school professional development and provided timetabled Zoom lessons for our students and posted learning support material on Google Classroom that was available 24/7. Once students returned we provided timetabled support and access to extra support twice weekly after school. We thank the staff for their hard work, dedication and generosity and are proud of the resilience our students have shown in dealing not only with Covid but the ongoing postponements and disruptions to normal sporting, cultural and academic schedules. We look forward to a much more settled 2021.

Leadership opportunities Leadership opportunities are provided across the school from Year 7. Students are encouraged to develop and nurture their

Māori Language moment.

The year that was 2020

Chanel College ball. developing spirituality through sacramental programme and organising the liturgies at daily karakia, Christmas, Easter and Anzac Day. At Year 13 senior student leaders have access to two prestigious intercollegiate leadership camps, the first for senior students in Catholic schools in the Wellington and Manawatu regions and the second for students in Marist-based schools across New Zealand.

A different sort of Leadership Student leaders in New Zealand schools faced unpredecented challenges this year. Our student leaders said: “We had to learn a new way of leading. We had to adapt our way of leading. It wasn’t so much about upfront leading but about behind the scenes leading.” “Yes. Supporting each other on the journey. It taught us how important having a personal relationship with each one of our students is. Like just seeing them in the corridor and talking with them and supporting them.” “It was a way to let people know that we understand what you are going through and we are here for you.” “During Covid with Logan’s help we made a video to cheer people up, to encourage them and to keep the school connected.” “Covid taught us how strong our school is and how supportive it is. Our teachers

have really supported us.” “The day I remember most is the day we went into Lockdown. It defined our year. It happened so quickly many people were panicking. But we grew strong and when I look back I see how far we have overcome the challenges.” “For me it was the day we came out of Lockdown and we were able to come back to school. There was such relief on everyone’s faces that we were back together again. We were so excited we couldn’t stop talking.” “It was great to see each other again but I also really enjoyed the opportunity to spend more time with my family, Mum and Dad and my sister. We spend more time with each other now.” Other highlights in our covid crazy year that students valued were the senior year level retreats held in South Featherston at the Magnificat Community and when the whole school was finally able to join together for Mass at St Patrick’s Church to celebrate the students who were being baptised or confirmed.

Values matter The way in which science and technology are applied in our 21st century world is based on our values. The way we relate to each other and treat each other is based on our values. Chanel offers a holistic, faith-based education anchored in a

Tough Guy & Gal Challenge.

Gymnasium and New Fitness Centre Our gymnasium offers students not only a full basketball court, a netball court, a tennis court, four volleyball courts and five badminton courts, but also a classroom and a fully equipped weights room. We also have an outside turf for sports such as hockey, netball and tennis. Our new Fitness Centre, funded by a group of very supportive parents in the Chanel College PTFA is headed towards the fundraising finishing line so that the new Fitness Centre will be able to be installed next year.

Smaller classes allow teachers more opportunities for one-on-one contact with students to address their individual learning needs and to develop resilience. We have doubled our learning support team from four to eight. From Year 7, students have access to specialist teachers in Science, Technology, Languages and the Arts (Visual Art, Drama and Music). A Guidance Counsellor and a school nurse are also available. Additional support offered through Homework Club helps to ensure that all eligible students are ready to achieve their personal milestones in NCEA Levels 1 -3.

The staff have done themselves proud this year, going that extra mile to ensure that our tamariki are nurtured, proud of who they are, and challenged in their learning. Developing a strong curriculum that uses the best of our environment and wider community ensures that our tamariki have a strong sense of who they are and a belief that they can make a difference. I thank the community and especially the board of trustees and the home and school committee for their tireless work for the school. For the students thank you for making coming to work such a pleasure.

As all of us understand, 2020 will go down in history. Covid aside there is still a huge amount to celebrate and schools have been able to demonstrate the positive and vital role they play in their communities. This is us in 2020 was our tagline at the beginning of the year. This encapsulated our place in the country, South Wairarapa and the aspirations of our school and community. Me and my environment stemmed from mahi last year.

Troy, Toby, Cooper and Rex clean the bike track!

Nothing beats the bike track in summer!

why this is so. For some students the opportunity to have a balance of family and school work was a highly successful model and for others the constant of the teacher available through the likes of Zoom, Seesaw, Google Classroom and email etc worked. Don’t leave town till you’ve seen the country was a tagline from 1980’s TV ad campaign and we have used that since lockdown to again celebrate what Dalefield, Carterton, Wairarapa and Aotearoa have to offer. Term three started with the whole school visiting Pūkaha, Mt Bruce. It was exciting travelling by bus together then stepping out into a world of wildlife and peace.

We started exploring what it really means to be in our special place here but also the impact that we have on our environment.

This was followed by a Year seven and eight overnight trip to Zealandia, which was for them the icing on the cake and the chance to make connections.

When lockdown hit, the big ideas here became the glue for the online learning. Creativity and outstanding involvement of Whānau meant that our children could explore their backyards and environment, posting examples of the learning for classmates and teachers.

Mostly however our students take away hope for the future and there is no better example for them than seeing a kākā feeding in a tree in the middle of the street in central Wellington, whilst we waited for the bus to Zealandia.

Win and Dom construct our new macrocarpa planter beds.

Back at school in level 2 was a time for re engagement and a celebration of what it is to be a social being. Many children thrived in lockdown and it is our responsibility to think about and question

We do lots of learning through play!

Gareth Sinton At Douglas Park School we believe the purpose of education is to develop better communities and create awesome young citizens. We give back through Service days, community involvement and instilling our PRIDE values in the children. We believe it’s important to get to know children and wh°nau, to bring them into the learning at school. The world is changing, and education needs to adapt alongside it. Learning at DPS is about developing the skills our children need for their future. We Nurture their talents, Explore new possibilities and enable them to create a better world. For us, the key skills are Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Learner Agency and Creativity. Children leave DPS equipped to meet their future. At the heart of what we do at Douglas Park is the DPS Kid, a description of the amazing students we develop here. The school has developed a curriculum framework to capture what we believe to be important for our learners...our 3 circles.

Relationships

Teachers at Douglas Park School are exposed to high quality professional development. This enables them to make powerful changes within their classroom through the use of innovative and insightful teaching practices.

He aha te mea nui o te ao. He t°ngata, he t°ngata, he t°ngata

Evidence based changes in the classroom practice For three years, we have worked closely with Rebbecca Sweeney, facilitator and mentor, who specialises in using the Spirals of Inquiry approach to support change within the classroom. This approach has enabled our teachers to dig into their practice and look critically at what is happening for our students. It has ensured that changes made in our classrooms are a result of educational research, re˜ection/ critique of teacher practice and careful consideration of what is happening in the classroom and why. Spirals of Inquiry has allowed us to get to know our learners as people and look beyond their academic outcomes to make changes that are best for them.

What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.

Covid brings us closer The relationship between teacher and student is the single highest determining factor in the quality of a child’s education. While many schools saw Covid as an obstacle to relationships, we were able to use this experience to bring us closer to our DPS wh°nau. We supported our wh°nau through regular and ongoing contact during lockdown and at Level 2 welcomed families back on to our school grounds. We talked a lot about gratitude and made a schoolwide video to give thanks for all that we have been grateful for across the lockdown that received praise from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Culture of kindness community service minded This year we sat down with our Student Councillors who were able to give us a clear message … They want to make a di˛erence to other people. We have already started seeing our students making a di˛erence, starting with small acts of kindness in the playground to their organisation of our Foodbank mufti day.

Celebrating the triumphs & experiences of education in Wairarapa

The DPS Magic team who won the Year 5/6 Netball ÿ nal!

Our Rimu learners during their ‘Footsteps’ dance lesson.

Core Beliefs At Douglas Park School, our teaching and learning is centred around our innovative learning environments. Enter any classroom and you will see students with agency who can think critically and creatively and work collaboratively.

Play based & maker learning at DPS We want our students to have a 21st century skill-set that will enable them to achieve once they leave school. To build these skills our students are given guidance and instructions just like any other school in the country, but when they are not with a teacher, they are in control of what their learning looks like. In our New Entrant classrooms this looks like playbased learning, and for our older students it looks like maker projects. The key threads that tie them together are our core beliefs and keeping ‘playful thinking’ alive.

Student voice Q: What do you like most about play-based learning/maker learning? Riley (6): That I share my ideas, and other people share ideas and we make our ideas happen.

Rylee (10): Time doing what we want, especially the free-making weeks when we get to plan our own projects and work on them. Q: Tell me about one thing you have done in maker time/play-based learning time that you are most proud of? Riley T: My pterodactyl. It was hard, especially cutting out the claws. I painted some string green so that you can’t see it on the green screen. When you use the green screen, if you paint things green you can’t see it and it looks more real. Rylee: A weight challenge...we had to be able to weigh some peanuts, and we had to make the machine. We had to prototype the machine, and ÿx things when they didn’t work. We learnt about grams, litres and measurement.

MAKE CHANGE IN YOUR COMMUNITY Are you passionate about making Wairarapa the best place it can be for young people? Do you have ideas about what could be done to enhance our region? The Wairarapa Youth Council is on the lookout for people aged 12-24 years to come and make a difference. The council meets regularly to talk about things impacting Wairarapa and how to make sure youth are included in decisions being made by our local councils.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU? There are huge benefits to being part of the Wairarapa Youth Council. It: y builds confidence and public speaking skills y develops skills required for leadership and effective teamwork y gives you exposure to the decision-makers in our region, including Elected Members and Mayors y builds understanding of local government and civics. …and of course, it looks great on your CV!

BUT DON’T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT… Here’s what previous members have said about being part of the Wairarapa Youth Council: “When I joined youth council I had no idea of what to expect... however, it turned out to be one of the best things I have done during my school years! Not only did I get a better understanding of what was happening in the community, but I became more

involved. I met amazing students from all different schools, and connections throughout the Wairarapa. It allowed my confidence levels to grow as I developed my communication skills with students and adults.” – Belle Willemstein “The first time I stepped into the community centre on Perry Street I really had no idea what to expect from the Wairarapa Youth Council. Four years later and it’s still a gift that keeps on giving! Without getting too sappy, I really can’t say enough how much I loved my time on the Wairarapa Youth Council. I was presented with an incredible amount of leadership opportunities and met many amazing new people along the way. Things like our annual camps, and the conference; Festival for the Future were massive highlights for me. Also, the opportunities to work alongside local council and other community organisations fed everyone on the Wairarapa Youth Council’s passion for community engagement. My confidence and people skills grew as I was pushed outside my comfort zone - yet as I was surrounded by such an amazing group of people it never felt like hard work!! It’s hard to go wrong joining the Wairarapa Youth Council - benefits are plentiful and the only con is I’ve moved out of the Wairarapa so can only stay involved online!” – Kitty Riach

HOW TO GET INVOLVED… The Wairarapa Youth Council welcomes members year-round. If it sounds like you, get in touch with Cherie McNamara on 021 308 783 or check out the Youth Council’s Facebook page.

Our work progresses with a new vision statement strategic plan focusing on manaakitanga; ako and kaitiakitanga. Our literacy professional development journey is incredibly rewarding and has a focus on developing neurodiverse friendly programmes for our students. From a property perspective we are in the midst of two hub renovations and school wide interior and exterior painting, our outdoor play spaces are continually being developed and we nearly have the ÿrst of our mountain bike tracks ready to go. With low studentto-teacher ratios, highly skilled sta° and a supportive local community we are well positioned to make a wonderful di°erence to our fabulous tamarikis’ education. Ng˜ mihi nui.

At Gladstone School we are continually working hard to provide the most up-to-date, relevant teaching and learning situations. During 2020 we have completed maths professional development, created dyslexiafriendly programmes, implemented junior play-based learning and established outdoor learning spaces. The new Year 7&8 space is taking shape and will be ready before the end of the school year. It features a purpose-built kitchen, art/design area and a large outdoor deck space. We know that our Year 7 & 8s will love working in a modern environment and can truly be empowered to thrive in such a learner-focused space. Kourarau are also excited about the modernisation work that is planned for their space over the upcoming summer holidays. We have renown facilitator Sarah Sharpe working with us through into 2021 on our literacy programmes. She is also running several community workshops for wh˜nau and interested community members as a way of bringing our community along on the journey with us. She leads from an evidencebased approach and we are excited about the progress our students are making.

Tradition is important at Gladstone and we are proud of the annual events that happen each year. Many of you will visit our school during the Scarecrow Fair, Pet Day and production times - the most recent of these was ‘Gladdy’s Got Talent Season 2’. Each year we are delighted with the e°ort students put into their scarecrows - you can see our school scarecrows on the fence as you drive past - this year the theme is ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’, come by and check them out they look super cool. Our FOGS (Friends of Gladstone School) work tirelessly in the background to make the Scarecrow Fair happen each year so that they can fund extra learning support and resources for the school. We enjoy seeing our tamariki involved in a wide range of sporting and cultural activities both in and outside of school hours. This year we welcomed Hemi Walker to the team. Hemi teaches keyboard, vocals, guitar and leads our school choir. Education outside the classroom is important to us here at Gladstone School. We are building up a wide range of opportunities for our students to explore within our local and wider areas. These opportunities include camps; cluster sports events; day trips; music, dance & drama activities; kapa haka and other festivals; chess tournaments and technology projects. Our Year 7&8 students are lucky enough to be able to attend

Scarecrow making. Makoura College for Design Technology on a Friday where they get to develop skills and use state of the art technology equipment to create a wide range of amazing items. Our green team have revitalised the school vege garden area and they are busy growing seedlings to sell at the school fair. We also have a very engaged and empowered embankment crew who have planted over 300 native plants along our stream area. These were kindly supplied by Matariki Tu R˜kau. Our pigs are helping us to remain sustainable and manage our food waste. They are happy in their new area which was built by our wonderful caretaker along with students and one of our fabulous relieving teachers.

GOOD BEGINNINGS

OWNERS MESSAGE Nicola Burling It is my pleasure to own and manage Good Beginnings Centre’s along with my husband Joe. We have a team of qualified and specialised teachers who have a passion for working with children under the age of five. Teachers work alongside the children to install a love of learning, fostering independence and school readiness. Our curriculum is based on children’s interests and during 2020 we have been on many learning journeys. As you can imagine each day brings delight as a child develops a new skill or discovers something for the first time. The teaching team looks forward to continuing our support for families and whānau in helping their children to become confident competent learners. If you would like to learn more about our Centre’s please visit our website www. goodbeginnings.co.nz or contact Nicola on 06 377 0949 or email gbec@xtra.co.nz Good Beginnings Infants & Toddlers opened in 2006 and quickly built a strong reputation within the community. The indoor and outdoor environments have been specifically developed to cater for children less than 3 years of age. The Centre is open Monday to Friday between the hours of 7.00am to 5.30pm, 50 weeks of the year. Teachers believe continuity between the home and the centre is paramount. Teachers work within Magda Gerber’s Educaring Approach, each child is allocated a primary caregiver to ensure strong relationships are formed so children and parents feel a sense of belonging. Individual books support communication between the home and centre and teachers take great pride in providing informative portfolios of each child’s learning journey. ERO visited the centre in 2017 and found infants and toddlers benefit from warm relationships with teachers who are sensitive to their cues. They work alongside children, supporting their developing interests and independence. Teachers liaise closely

with whānau to align activities and care routines to those children experience at home. Children are offered a rich playbased programme that includes a range of active exploration opportunities. Children’s transitions into and out of the centre are well considered, parents and children are well supported at these times. Te reo me ngā tikanga Māori are clearly evident in the environment and interactions. Children with diverse needs are well supported. Internal evaluations are collaborative and result in improvements for the benefit of children. The full report can be found at www.ero.govt.nz. Transition from the Infants & Toddlers Centre to our Educare Centre is developed in consultation with parents and dependent on the individual needs of each child. Teachers from both centre’s work closely with parents and children to ensure a smooth transition process. photography © preschoolportraits.co.nz

Celebrating the triumphs & experiences of education in Wairarapa

GOOD BEGINNINGS Good Beginnings Educare Centre was established in the early 1990s and continues to be in high demand. The centre is housed in a refurbished villa and is open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 5.30pm, 50 weeks of the year. The Centre is spacious, homely, and the inviting environment supports child-initiated play, catering uniquely for children aged 2 to 5 years of age. The Centre’s programme is developed in consultation with parents and children and based strongly on children’s dispositions, individual needs and interests. Throughout the day children can chose from a vast range of learning experiences in a carefully prepared environment. Teachers and children interact in responsive reciprocal ways to support learning experiences that are meaningful to all. The Education Review Office visited in 2018 and found the centre is well placed to promote positive learning outcomes for children. Teachers are responsible and encouraging and support children’s engagement in learning experiences. Children confidently and actively particpate in rich learning opportunities which increase their understanding of reading, writing and mathematics and are successfully included in programmes in meaningful ways. Te reo me ngā tikanga Māori are intergrated throughout the programme. Children with special learning needs take part in an inclusive programme and teachers support children’s seamless transition to school. Teachers are very reflective and collaborative. Internal evaluation guides improvement and sustains best practice. The full report can be found at www.ero.govt.nz. Teachers are committed to supporting children and families in their transition to school. Our robust transition procedures ensure children have the appropriate skills for the best possible start at school. photography © preschoolportraits.co.nz

Literacy Aotearoa – Masterton 130 STUDENTS

SITE CO-ORDINATOR Carol Wald It is estimated that over one million adults in New Zealand have literacy difficulties in their everyday lives. Literacy and numeracy issues can show in a variety of ways and nearly always have the effect of holding someone back. We know that people with literacy and numeracy barriers need plenty of support and encouragement. Nationally over 8000 people each year complete programmes with Literacy Aotearoa. These people are predominantly people at risk, with no qualifications or low education levels. Some of these people are already attending tertiary training programmes or in the workforce requiring workplace and/or intensive literacy support. A large proportion of our target demographic are Maori, Pasifika and Youth – and we also run programmes designed for seniors, newcomers and for workplaces/ businesses.

The Masterton delivery site of Literacy Aotearoa has continued to run courses this year despite the challenges experienced during the Covid-19 lockdown periods. Online classes were offered during lockdown but these were not as easy to implement as not all adult learners had access to internet, data or practical devices. Where possible Tutors did their best to communicate with the learners, during this period. Face-to-face, classes operated at Level 2 and below.

STAFF

back from progressing in the workplace. Our organisation can offer tailored workplace programmes for groups delivered at the workplace or at our office. Workplace courses aim to raise the overall level of skills of staff and to address any areas where a lack of skills is impacting work processes and getting in the way of standard operating procedures. The Employer-led Workplace Literacy and Numeracy fund supports a company-wide approach and was set up because many businesses find new staff have gaps in basic skill knowledge that make it a lot harder to get the best out of them and difficult to upskill them on the job. Some employers have found that retraining staff to match modern technology is an issue. Others take the opportunity to offer their staff valuable life skills. EWLN may be the perfect solution for your business – or you may just need support for a small group of staff, in which case we can probably still help with some funded training. Feel free to discuss workplace training ideas with us. For more information contact Carol Wald, Site Coordinator at Literacy Aotearoa, REAP House, 340 Queen Street, Masterton. Term 1 got off to a great start with a full quota of classes. Programmes offered in 2020 include Literacy, Language & Numeracy, Financial Literacy, Digital Literacy, Healthy Lifestyle, Learner Licence and Work Readiness. All classes include a literacy & numeracy component and are tailored to people for whom reading and writing are a challenge. Most of our learners have not gained formal certificates including NCEA L2. We do offer literacy and numeracy Unit Standards as part of our programme delivery. The MPS vision is for us to be a community of active and motivated people who foster a sense of belonging –whanaungatanga, good citizenship for people -manaakitanga and place –kaitiakitanga. We value individuals and celebrate diversity, offering a welcoming, inclusive school environment. We hold high expectations for student achievement for all students and work to ensure our students are knowledgeable and skilful, as they become motivated, independent, self-directed learners. We want our students to be excited and interested in their learning and for learning to be fun, challenging, meaningful and relevant to their lives. We believe that “Education is not the filling of a bucket but the lighting of a fire.” W.B Yeats. This year provided special challenges and MPS staff and students rose to the occasion, as everyone learnt about Zoom and Distance Learning. When we came back to school we all enjoyed our attractive environment, with well-maintained grounds which provide a great place for students to grow, learn and play safely. Our students can enjoy the native plantings, fruit trees and vegetable gardens. Watching Monarch Butterflies hatch and seeds turn into vegetable plants are great learning opportunities. Student art is displayed in and around the school in the form of hall, hallway and classroom displays, with decorated pou and murals situated around the grounds. We have some wonderful artists at MPS. MPS encourages students to be involved and have a say in their lives and in their community. We recognise leadership potential and foster development of individual skills and talent. Students are offered a wide range of opportunities to participate in the arts and special programmes. We also recognise that some students will need extra support and we ensure support programmes are matched to the needs of students. The Masterton Primary School community works together in partnership. All who come here receive a warm welcome. We are a health promoting school. We have three pou, designed and painted by students, placed strategically away from the school gate so that parents can drop their children off safely, but close enough for them to walk to and from school. Great for health and fitness. Breakfast Club, run by volunteers, opens at 8am for those in need of some cereal and a chat to start the day (school starts at 8.45am). Later in the day we have ‘Fruit in Schools’ and school milk during ‘Feed and Read’. Students’ lunch eating time is supervised by staff to make sure everyone eats before they go off to play or take part

in lunchtime practices. Our 40-minute lunchtime is just enough time to have a break without being too long, so problems are less likely to arise. Our comfortable, well stocked library is a great place for students who like a peaceful playtime reading or playing a board game. Finishing at 2.30pm means we get the best part of the day for learning. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) MPS expectations, are taught throughout the school so students feel safe and supported in class and at play, and Circle Time offers opportunities for them to discuss problems they may have. During the year we have EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom) Tent City, school camp and class trips, providing opportunities to learn about our local area and environmental issues. Pukaha, Mt Bruce Bird Reserve was a highlight for many students this year and students are now motivated to take action and fundraise to support Pukaha. We hold a Silver Enviroschools Award and integrate Education for Sustainability throughout our curriculum planning and student inquiry learning. Student involvement in extra-curricular school life such as Choir, Kapa Haka, Jump Jam, sports teams, School Librarians, Road patrol, running assemblies and working with whanau/buddy classes has continued where possible around Covid restrictions. MPS - an exciting place - where people care. MOTIVATED POSITIVE SUCCESSFUL.

successful process which we will continue with in the future for students who are beginning their time here at MIS. I felt anxious about starting at Masterton Intermediate as a new Year Eight student because I did not know anyone at all. However, having an interview with my 2020 teacher two days before school was due to begin, helped me to learn a lot more about the MIS values and some of the things that I wanted to get involved in during the year. Russell Thompson (Tumuaki) Tena koutou katoa. Ka nui ngā mihi nui ki nga kura me nga whānau katoa o te Wairarapa. He tau tino rerekē tenei! Haere mai te tau rua mano, rua tekau mā tahi. A focus at Masterton Intermediate in 2020 has been for our students to get fully involved in school activities and to be kind to each other. Many have responded to these requests and have made the most of the opportunities available to them. We look forward to the 2021 school year with great hope and enthusiasm.

This year was a very big year for me because I raised over $1000 in the fun run and I was the number one student on the leaderboard in the school. This event is a school fundraising project for all students to get involved in. I was able to raise $1074.96. I would like to thank the many kind neighbours who sponsored me. I was able to choose several prizes based on the total amount of money that I had raised . I got a laptop, a handball, a bag tag and some slime in a bucket. I felt very pleased with my contribution to MIS. (Rhys Amos - Room 16, Year Eight)

LEARNING CONFERENCES IN MARCH AND AUGUST These valuable kōrero contribute greatly towards strengthening the home and school relationships that encourage our akonga to be the very best they can be. Students are able to articulate about their three learning goals as well as reflect on their positive achievements. 85% of families supported their child by attending these conferences and we will strive to gain a 100% response rate, hopefully to be achieved in 2021.

Some of the many highlights of the 2020 school year at Masterton Intermediate have included:

INTERVIEWS WITH NEW STUDENTS AND THEIR WHĀNAU This was a new initiative for our kura in which our Year Seven and new Year Eight students were able to come into school on February 3 or 4 to meet their kaiako to talk about themselves and their interests. This was a very

I was lucky to get my first choice which was the MIS Amazing Race. I enjoyed working in groups of four because I met some new friends. We had to complete tasks that were set around Masterton such as taking a photo with a fireman and making a video about road safety. (Ella Wenden-Hooper - Room 14, Year Eight)

I attended both learning conferences with my parents. The thing that I liked most was that I was able to express myself about my learning goals. My main goal for 2020 was to be selected for the MIS kapa haka rōpu to compete at the regional competition in Lower Hutt. I feel immense satisfaction that I have achieved this goal. VOCAL SPECTACULAR On Friday evening, August 7, 40 students from the MIS choir performed in the Vocal Spectacular at Wairarapa College. On the way to the event, I felt very scared that I would have a voice crack but one of my friends reassured me that everything would be ok. We had vocal warmups which gave me an extra boost of confidence. I had the honour of introducing our group and we looked impressive in our school blazers. We sang three songs, of which “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John was my favourite. We all gave 100 percent of our effort and the audience appreciated our performance. (Michael Ross-Harding - Room 10, Year Eight)

SYNDICATE HAKA COMPETITION This syndicate event has been contested since 2015 but this year we performed our school haka, “E mātahi ana, e mataara!” for the first time as a whole school. Waipoua (Rooms 11, 12, 13 & 14) were the competition winners on Thursday, July 2. I felt that the competition was very tight and that any of the five syndicates could have been the winners. I was absolutely delighted when we were announced as the tīma toa for 2020. We all worked extremely hard together for this win. Go Waiopoua! (Jayde-Ann Carlson - Room 12, Year Eight)

ARTS ENRICHMENT This year we held our Arts Enrichment programmes in terms two and three over two full days which proved to be very successful. There were 18 different arts-related activities to choose from each term and 90 percent of students received their first or second selections. We were honoured to have a visit on Friday, August 26, from Perry Rush, President of the New Zealand Principals Federation, to view these programmes in action. Perry enjoyed his short time with us and even got to show off some of his dance moves.

35

Celebrating the triumphs & experiences of education in Wairarapa

In Arts Enrichment in term two my group made mosaic letters using smashed plates and cups which we decorated with paper flowers and beads. In term three, we made glitter art using paintings that we had made and covered them with gloss mixed with glitter. We also made a collection of wooden triangles representing aspects of what we do at MIS. In both of these programmes, I really enjoyed having the freedom to express my own ideas in a creative way. (Izzy Tortoza - Room 7, Year 8)

RUGBY EXCHANGES WITH WAINUIOMATA INTERMEDIATE Our first XV boys rugby team played a home and away series against Wainuiomata Intermediate who had won all of their games over the past 3 seasons. A narrow 29-31 loss at Memorial Park was followed up with a 17-all away draw at William Jones Park, to give the hosts the rights to hold the Piri Weepu Trophy until we play again in June, 2021. We were disappointed that we did not come away with a win but our boys kept their heads up in both games. Personally, I really enjoyed this experience. Wainuiomata Intermediate showed us fantastic manaakitanga for the second game. (Konnor Vainu - Room 8, Year Eight)

SPORTS EXCHANGE WITH WADESTOWN SCHOOL A very enjoyable winter sports exchange with Wadestown Primary School took place on Tuesday, September 15. Mixed teams of boys and girls in Year 7 and Year 8 teams competed in football and hockey with MIS very convincing winners in both hockey matches. Wadestown turned the tables in football with a convincing win in the Year 7 game and a close 4-3 victory in the Year 8 encounter where Jazz Shailer was an outstanding MIS performer. I think that the Wadestown students really enjoyed coming to MIS. They loved our sports grounds and farm because they have hardly any grass at their school. (Maddie Kennedy - Room 8, Year Eight)

STUDENT LEADERS Each of our classes selected a Year 8 boy and girl as their student leaders in February. This group meets each month to organise activities as well as running our assemblies. Some of their work is done outside of school hours. I have really enjoyed meeting new people and working on projects both in and out of school. I felt proud wearing the school blazer when our class hosted the first assembly on Wednesday, February 18 ... even though it was too big for me. (Abbey Monastra - Room 18, Year Eight)

SYNDICATE DANCE PROGRAMME & COMPETITION In term three, each of our five syndicates worked with Caitlyn Duffy, an ex-MIS student, from the Footsteps Dance Company, to develop skills and confidence in preparation for the dance competition which was held on Tuesday, September 22. This was an excellent programme which will continue in 2021 and beyond. The winning syndicate this year was Kaituna (Rooms 15, 16, 17 and 18.) We were nervous beforehand but when the music started our fears disappeared. I did not think that we would win but was overwhelmed when they announced that “Kaituna” were the 2020 dance champions. (Georgie Moore - Room 17 - Year Seven)

WRISSA BASEBALL WINNERS On Tuesday, October 20, our MIS team won the Wellington Region Intermediate Schools Sports Association (WRISSA) Baseball competition which was played at Fraser Park in Lower Hutt. They won all four of their games including a 10-6 success against Evans Bay Intermediate in the final. 31 runs were scored with only 11 conceded. Genuine Savaliga was our Most Valuable Player and has huge potential in this code. It was a great tournament for MIS, competing against some excellent players in each of the other schools. I felt very proud when I managed to strike out the last two batters in the final. (Maggie Shields - Room 10, Year Seven)

BIKE TRACK The bike track at MIS is almost completed and will be nearly 1.5 kilometres in length. This track has been designed with considerable input from our students with Xhan Jones, Bayle Griffin, Ged Billing and Jaiden Duncan taking a leading role. The support from Glen Malcolm, Holly Hullena, Gill Stewart and Andy Freeman has been greatly appreciated. It was a lot of fun planning the design and features for the MIS bike track. I also liked finding out about the different sizes and prices for the shipping container that will store 30 bikes. It was a cool experience working with adults to get this awesome project done. (Bayle Griffin - Room 12, Year Eight)

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

We love climbing the trees!

Gene Moore When I started as Principal at Pirinoa School in Term 3 this year, I experienced an unforgettable welcome and powhiri from the students, staff and community of which our school is truly at the heart of. With a roll of 44 pupils and growing, Pirinoa School offers an educational experience that’s uniquely country with a modern twist. With smaller class sizes, we cater for years 1-8. Our amazing teaching team delivers fresh, exciting and innovative programmes. We have a dedicated, skilled Board of Trustees and an extremely supportive local community. Our students get to experience an education that extends far beyond the classroom walls, blending both curriculum and daily lifelearning activities. From traditional Pet Days to exciting educational trips, your child’s primary school years here will be incredibly memorable!

way to finish than with a trip to H20 Xtream in Upper Hutt for a swim and fun on the slides! The biggest highlight of the year was our school production ‘Ye-Ha!’ It was hard work but we got better and better with every practice. We all had speaking parts and costumes, we learnt lots of songs, helped build props and came up with our own stage designs! It was a massive night out in Pirinoa and the Community Hall was packed! We felt like true stars! Being a Silver Enviroschool, we really enjoy learning about how to look after our environment and maintain our edible food gardens. It helps to equip us with an appreciation of living sustainably, skills that will last our lifetime. We love entering in gardening and agricultural competitions and have a steady production of worm wee which we sell and is always in hot demand! Next year we will get bees and make our orchard and gardens even better!

Planting a tree to celebrate Matariki.

At Pirinoa we have heaps of trees to climb, a big field to play in and a cool swimming pool for the hot summer days. We have a big sandpit too! Here we are more like a big family, our older kids love playing and helping guide the juniors in the classrooms and outside too. We get to go to heaps of sports and fun trips to help our learning.

‘Ye Ha!’ This year’s production was a good old western!

Early in the year we had our first trip to the beach at Ngawi to see the seals and spend some time fossicking around the rock pools. We love our local environment and make the most of it!

Supporting Wellington Free Ambulance on Onesie Day.

We celebrated Matariki by taking part in what has become a tradition running for three years now. We planted a fruit tree in our orchard, sang some local waiata, and talked about how Matariki is about new beginnings at the start of a new year, especially as we knew we would be getting a new principal! In Term 3 we went to the ‘Space Place’ at the Carter Observatory in Wellington. We had an awesome time learning through hands-on interactive displays and activities, what better

Our Centres Our centres in the Wairarapa region have continued to thrive, despite the challenges that this year has brought. Our Centre Managers, their amazing teaching teams and the strong relationships they have with our wonderful centre families have meant that our centres have continued to flourish and build on their accomplishments in this past year. Emma Thompson, who manages our Dot Kids Early Learning Centre in Martinborough with just a year in the role, has led the centre from strength to strength. Maintaining a healthy roll through what has been a challenging year for most, along with introducing a wonderful new nutritional programme to the centre, she and her team have built even stronger relationships with their families. Sam Gordon is the manager at Dot Kids Greytown. She is the longest serving Manager of our Wairarapa centres and brings a wealth of experience with her from previous leadership roles. The strong and supportive nature of our Managers’ relationships enables the sharing of ideas, training and support making for a strong team across the region, that all the community will benefit. Donna Harper is our charismatic Manager at Dot Kids Carterton, priding herself on developing strong partnerships with the centre children and parents. The centre has undergone a fabulous transformation of their playground area in recent months, much to the delight of our children and the community, including passers-by. Kerry Le Roux manages our CubbyHouse Masterton centre, also priding herself on the positive, strong connections she has with the

families in the centre, which has also seen the centre flourish this year. Our Wairarapa centres have all experienced many positive achievements and outcomes as a group over the past 12 months with these talented and hardworking Managers at the helm, supported by their amazing teaching teams.

One of these achievements has been to enhance their meals and menus with a new nutritional programme called Nourish, based on NZ Heart Foundation’s, Healthy Heart – Gold Award for Early Childhood Centres. While all our Wairarapa centres provide fresh and cooked meals for the children in their care, our centres are in various stages of introducing the Nourish programme. Our Nourish recipes are dietitian approved and have been thoughtfully designed in line with the NZ Food & Nutrition Guidelines and the Ministry of Health (MOH) Healthy Eating for babies, toddlers and children. Our centres continue to strive to improve the services that we offer, seeing mealtimes as a special opportunity that allows us to not only provide nourishing food but educate children

about healthy food choices and relationships with food. Across the centres we have some very passionate teachers who are committed to providing the best possible learning environment for the children. We are continuously working to developing true partnerships with the families, setting children on their education journey with a lifelong passion for learning. Our centres all have open door policies and are more than happy to have conversations about what they offer in their individual environments. We would love to meet you and talk about the ways we can support your family in their education journey.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Mark Bridges 2020 has been a great year at Solway, even with the curve ball of Covid. I am really proud of how our whole sta˛ and community stepped up to make lockdown work.

Solway School, learning together. Currently Solway School is made up of two teams, Rangitumau and Tararua.

We had online learning in place from day 1. Solway remains both little bit town and a little country, a school that lets kids build huts and climb trees, a school with our community at the heart of all we do. We have a fantastic team of highly dedicated, expert teachers who assure academic excellence across all curriculum areas. At Solway we focus on what is important and children love coming to school. Our students overall achievement in Reading, Writing and Numeracy is consistently higher than the national average.

236

Solway students develop a strong sense of self belief, they stand out as well rounded citizens of the world who are proud of their cultural identity.

STUDENTS

The Tararua team is made up of 3 classes with students from year 4-6. This year has seen many fantastic learning opportunities for our students. Lockdown did not slow our engagement in the least. The students have set and achieved personal goals and learning goals through sporting, cultural and academic activities. We have held our annual year 5 and year 6 camps to help build conÿdence and independence, always a favourite for those involved. This year has also seen opportunities for the students to develop their computational thinking, and their ability to design and develop digital outcomes in the new digital curriculum. The senior production was ÿlmed and shared via social media for the ÿrst time due to Covid restrictions. Our community and whanau have also been involved with the students learning through Seesaw. In the Rangitumau Team (Year 0-4; 6 classes) we are into our ÿfth year of Learning Through Play and can see the beneÿts for the children with their social, academic and creative development.

27

Highlights of 2020 include experiencing the excitement

of Surf Life Saving training at Riversdale Beach, the challenges of online learning during lockdown but also the success of bringing the community together via platforms like Zoom. We had our third 6am community Matariki Celebration and opened our new BMX track on Butlers Field. Term 4 began with Flower and Pet day, traditions like this are part of our DNA. It is not just cats and dogs at Solway but lambs, goats, ponies and alpacas. We continue to have huge wh°nau support from our school community for all these and many more exciting moments in time, during 2020. 2020 was unique for everyone at Solway as it was across the globe. We all worked together to provide the best learning opportunities for the children while always keeping their safety and emotional well-being at the forefront of decisions made across the school. We’d like to thank the whole Solway Community for trusting us with your children, knowing we are all here to help grow your child to be the best that they can be. To develop socially, academically, physically, all the while considering their emotional well-being and growing learners for life.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Fraction Art.

Jennifer Muth This has been the year to reflect on what our priorities are. We value people – our students, our whānau and ourselves. We value our community and place a strong emphasis on learning how to serve others. Our school is named after St Teresa of Avila who championed showing God’s love to others through your actions. Over 500 years after she was born we are carrying on this tradition by being OnTRACK in our learning and our behaviour. On-TRACK stands for Think, Responsible, Achieve, Courageous and Kind. All of these are values we see and hear, every day, in our classrooms and playground. With dedicated staff, supportive families and innovative programmes, we are proud of our school and how this approach grows our students’ well-being.

105 STUDENTS

12 STAFF

Innovative programmes are key to having engaged and motivated students at St Teresa’s School. We follow the message of Pope Francis in caring for our environment and the earth. Our senior students have continued their role as kaitiaki of the Donald Creek in Featherston. Students are working to create a better environment for the long fin eels and micro-invertebrates by planting the banks of the creek and installing eel motels – pipes that provide shade and shelter as the water heats up during the summer months.

Planting the banks of Donald’s Creek.

of Pae Tu Mokau o Tauira, Featherston. Our students are working collaboratively to retell these legends through dance, drama or digital technology. In Term 3 we produced the Fractions in Action Show which combined concepts about fractions with music, drama, dance and visual art. The Senior students wrote and produced their own performances while our Junior students discovered the effect of fractions when Humpty Dumpty fell off the wall! From cooking to computer programming and collaborating to share computer skills and knowledge, our students are engaged and connected to each other and our community. Projects such as these give meaning to learning mathematics, reading and writing.

Realising the dream – completing the cover and playground.

We are supported by a wonderful community which supports all our activities, including fundraising. We are very excited about our new turf playground and the fantastic cover over it. We now have a place to play in shade in summer and undercover on wet windy days.

Collaborative cooking.

The community science table and shelter will be installed at Donald’s Creek shortly with the assistance of the Council and many community groups. Our junior students have continued to develop our school orchard and gardens. With the Featherston Organic Group, they created beneficial insect hotels and planted out pallet gardens. We are looking forward to the students eating the fruit and vegetables they have grown. In Term 1 we walked to Te Wakiti and listened to Warren Maxwell retell three of the legends

Junior gardens.

Science: exploring our waterways.

Tinui School has a roll of 38 students split into a junior and senior class. The school this year, like other schools, has had its challenges but has pulled together and come through these admirably. Although faced with challenges we have been able to have a production (Tinui Talent Show) which was very exciting for the students. They had wonderful acts and made the night a huge success. Unfortunately due to Covid and bad weather we were unable to participate in our Cluster Schools Athletics and Cross Country, however we ran our own Cross Country and Athletics days. Pets Day was also a big success with both the children and pets showing off their skills in the ring. And running a very profitable wee food and craft market.

The school’s learning theme for Term 2 & 3 has been “Our Backyard”. This has been a journey of discovery, learning about our past and exploring what is going on in our community. The children have been involved in a native walkway planting and starting our very own native nursery to help replant the local farms and waterways and other fragile habitats. This will be followed up with a whole school trip to Zealandia in December. The school has a very supportive community which helps drive and sustain the school. We have some excellent facilities including an all purpose turf, a school swimming pool and spacious grounds. Additionally within easy reach we have the Tinui Anzac walkway and Castlepoint beach which extends our learning outside the classroom.

Hadlow School

Continued from page 55 challenges before recording and sending them into be judged. Our Year 8 EPro8 team placed ÿrst for Wairarapa and we had four other teams who placed in Year 5-8, qualifying for the Wellington Regionals. At Hadlow we believe in ‘Growing Leaders’ and giving our students, particularly our older students the opportunity to learn about leadership. They learn about the di° erent qualities leaders have and also develop an understanding of how people can develop these skills and qualities. Our students learn about goal setting, having grit, having empathy, service, making mistakes and having a growth mindset; all important in becoming a leader, or when following their dreams. Our Year 7 and 8 students are also involved in the William Pike Challenge Award when they move into the senior part of the school. The award is a primary school equivalent to the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The William Pike Challenge Award Vision is “to grow a world of young explorers that are ready to take on our rapidly evolving world”. Our ‘Careers’ Programme’ is also an important piece to ‘Growing Leaders’. Our students spent time hearing di° erent people’s stories about the jobs, pathways and careers they have taken and the skills and qualities that helped them become successful in their chosen ÿeld. In July, our school community came together to celebrate Matariki. The evening was ÿlled with fun, food, musical items, skits, and activities such as star gazing, looking through a telescope, storytelling, the star dome, craft, and art activities. The night was a huge success, and we look forward to further school community Matariki celebrations in the future. Each year we host a morning for our

This year, by nine o’clock there wasn’t a park to be had in the school grounds or on High Street within walking distance of the school. The classrooms were over˛o wing with grandparents and their grandchildren sharing their learning together. It was wonderful to see how proud grandchildren and grandparents were of each other. After time in class and a tour of the school and grounds, we hosted the grandparents to morningtea in the dining-room and there was a wonderful hum of conversation as people reminisced about their own school days, and how everything had changed for the better.

After this short respite, the grandparents then attended a concert where they enjoyed performances of dance, music, instrumental pieces, song, waiata and kapa haka from all ages. Music and the Performing and Visual Arts are areas where our students thrive and grow. In 2020 students have regularly performed in concerts and school events. Hadlow’s House Cultural Competition is a ÿercely contested ‘House Music’ Competition held in Term Three. This year was a stunning year of performances from across all four houses. Public speaking and learning to present a speech are also a part of our curriculum, with all students from Year 3 to Year 8 doing speeches each year. Public speaking, like riding a bike, or kicking a ball or reading, is a skill; the more you practise and the more you are exposed to such opportunities, the more you will grow and develop these skills. This year, some of the sports our students have participated and competed in, have been hockey, football, netball, swimming, cross-country, touch, basketball, cricket, tennis, athletics, equestrian and golf. A lot of our ÿxtures are exchanges with other prep schools, where our teams travel around the lower North Island and experience travelling and playing together as a team. These experiences are often treasured by all our students, long after they leave Hadlow. With careful planning around covid-19, we made sure our exchanges continued to go ahead. Getting outside in nature and learning outside of the classroom, is nothing new, however, the beneÿts for students in our increasingly digital and busy world is huge. Looking back at 2020, we will remember covid-19 but more importantly, the way we managed to negotiate and continue our learning to ensure our special events carried on as normally possible; without covid-19 getting in the way. 2020 was a fantastic year and one everyone can be extremely proud of. Community sports facility opens

Tēnā koutou katoa As the end of the school year draws near, I reflect upon all of the experiences and opportunities that have enabled my students to thrive in 2020. 2020 was a year that we can all comfortably say, we didn’t see that coming! However, the significant disruptions due to Covid did not dampen our spirits! If anything it galvanised our spirits. It provided our students, whanau & community an opportunity to learn in new ways, connect on different levels and reignite our passion for learning. Never once had I considered padlocking gates to stop children from playing on our fields or switching off water fountains to stop them from drinking.

Even our fairies went into lockdown!

The new normal had arrived, virtual assemblies, class Zoom meetings and observing the online chat between students and their friends. For many of our students, life during lockdown was no different to their everyday lives, due to their rural setting. One of the most common themes that came through as a positive through lockdown was the quality family time spent at home. Board games, baking, family and 1pm health updates were the common daily ritual.

Rachel Bunny sliding down one of the ice waterfalls.

One memorable moment this year was the installation of our new sports turf at school. With the support of local businesses and community support we finally got it done! This facility has totally changed the face of how we play sport in our community. The work now begins to establish the Wainuioru Sports Club.

Ski trip

The annual ski trip was another huge success! Our very keen ski patrollers embraced new challenges and were determined to succeed on the rocky back country of Tukino. The “Wall” was conquered by so many of our students this year!

Camp Riversdale 2020

This year we travelled to Riversdale for our end of year camp. Going local was the theme of the day and we were glad that Camp Waimanaaki provided us with the experience we were after. We battled through some atrocious weather, but at the end of the day the children loved their experience. We were also treated to some amazing food from Chef Nat, Vanessa (Manager) and Hannah during our stay. We thought that they would be great to take on next years ski trip!

Wairarapa College

House Singing was a highlight of Term 3 with Puketoi taking out the competition.

ACTING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Michele Whiting T˜n° koutou katoa, For Wairarapa College this year, along with the rest of Wairarapa, New Zealand and the world, 2020 has been an extraordinary year. While it came with its stresses and disappointments, we also witnessed some amazing achievements, and the experiences provided us with some new challenges to address. At Wairarapa College, we believe our students and teachers have stepped up to embrace those challenges and continue to provide learning opportunities to showcase the abilities and talents of our young people.

The 40 Hour Famine Student Leadership team worked hard to make the online sponsoring a huge success.

Many students enjoyed learning digitally this year.

During lockdown, students experienced a steep learning curve in how to self-manage in the online environment. They continued to engage with teachers in completing tasks and entering dialogue about learning. We also appreciated the support parents gave at this time, with everyone juggling work and home responsibilities.

1064 STUDENTS

106 STAFF

Once everyone returned to school, there was a strong need to return to ‘normal’, so again a big thank you to all the coaches, parents and wh°nau for their support of our sports teams who have continued to perform very well in competitions, including those that often miss recognition, such as squash. The regularity of practices and competition contributed to maintaining student well-being. The Performing Arts were not forgotten. What a brave and determined group of students to advocate for a show this year. They weren’t going to let Covid beat them! And again, sta˛ stepped up to produce an amazing show, ‘All Shook Up’. What an appropriate title for 2020! This provided a chance for the community to see for themselves the true capabilities of our young people. The building and refurbishment programme continues, and while it can be disruptive at times, it also signals a fresh new start for Wairarapa College. During the next year, our school and learning environment will be improved by the restoration of the iconic Sutherland Block, as well as new buildings for supported education and food technology.

The WaiCol Mountain Bike Team competed strongly at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Championships in Term 3. Some sporting facilities will get an upgrade. We are also taking advantage of the opportunity provided by home learning in lockdown to open up digital learning to all students through the ‘Bring Your Own Device’ initiative in Years 9 and 10. The aim is that all students will have ‘blended’ (digital, pen and paper) educational opportunities in all subjects. One of the best features of this policy is that students will also take their own devices home to continue their learning with parents, and share what has been achieved at school. The Board’s strategic goals continue to set the vision for the school to provide an education for its students that meets the needs of the 21st century. The Ministry of Education has set Well-being and Identity as

Love was in the air on Valentine’s Day with students buying and delivering romantic blooms for fellow students.

two key areas that all schools need to focus on for students to become successful. We are also looking forward to the new Principal who will be taking on the role in 2021 and will lead change for a futurefocused education. Under their leadership, Wairarapa College will continue to grow conÿdent, creative and articulate young people. Ka kite

The year that was 2020

Despite a shortened rehearsal time, the major production of All Shook Up was fantastic and such a credit to all the students and sta˜ involved.

Poto College House had a very successful year with lots of fundraising and activities.

It was a weird and complicated year for sport but most of WaiCol’s teams were able to play in revised competitions and enjoyed the experience.

The Junior Leaders got to go away on camp and while travelling on the trains in Wellington sensibly wore facemasks.

Poto College House The Jewel in the Crown 2020 has been one out of the box! The year started with the excitement of hostel families and awesome supporters joining the Poto College House staff and PCH Trust to celebrate the securing of the lease to run the hostel independently from Wairarapa College. A historic moment in the history of PCH. Almost as soon as the event was over we heard of Covid 19 (Coronavirus) and the world changed! I’m proud to say however, our boarders, their whanau and our staff got on with the lockdown, ensuring boarders were still engaged with each other remotely, and organising their safe return without too much drama. For management it was awesome to have the boarders back into hostel routine and life - especially study, cultural activities and for a lot of them sports. Our Poto College House Head girl, Molly Donald, reflected on the year. The Coronavirus pandemic certainly was the thing that separated 2020 from any other year. However, returning to PCH after lockdown to see her many friends, returning to her busy role of Head Girl of Wairarapa College and her numerous other voluntary community commitments were really good memories. One of biggest thrills was training at the gym again and returning to 1st XI Hockey team (even if it was a short season) with 9 of her fellow PCH boarders. Other highlights for Molly were the Wairarapa College Sports Foundation & PCH fundraiser where she got to meet Sumo Stevenson. Molly’s time at PCH is coming to end after spending her past four years living at the hostel where she has made lifelong friends and many memories.

Year 13 Leavers photo.

Fundraiser from left to right Catriona Williams, Justin Marshall, Mark Robinson, Megan Hull and Scotty Stevenson.

The PCH Trust & PCH fundraising committee have dedicated so much of their time to the success of the hostel, and it is paying off. We have invested a lot into the renovations of the hostel including making the Manager’s Cottage compliant; completing upgrading the junior boys’ ablution block; purchasing a 12-seater van to transport our busy boarders, and also undertaking significant work on all of the boilers. This is the start of some big plans for PCH moving forward which requires continued fundraising and support from local agencies. Poto College House is a vibrant and busy place. We encourage boarders to make the most of every opportunity available to them in sport, culture, and the arts. Academic excellence is a high priority and structured prep times are an integral part of achieving this. Poto College House continues to provide a valuable service to Wairarapa’s rural community and neighbouring districts. Hui Te Marama with PCH Whanau.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Pauline Harter It has been a wonderful learning journey since establishing our Montessori Centre in 1995. We moved to our present site 10 years ago, a former villa in Lincoln Rd, and this lovely home has become the ‘Children’s House’ I had dreamed of: A home for busy, conÿ dent and connected learners, teachers and children (parents too!) all learning together.

A tea party in the willow hut. It is important for us to share with parents the ‘magic’ of the Montessori learning materials the children use, and to discover the philosophy that guides us as teachers. A priority for us is to communicate with parents in order to share their children’s learning at our centre. This is done regularly online as well as at our centre. We aim to follow the children’s needs and interests, nurturing their love of learning, being a friend and being part of a community.

40

STUDENTS

Our Montessori Children’s House is an inviting, peaceful learning environment carefully prepared to engage our children in purposeful activities. This leads them to become independent and responsible for themselves and each other.

9

STAFF

Our Montessori curriculum provides the children with specially designed Montessori learning materials and these activities are set out on open shelves to support place and order. It is this structure that enables the children to choose purposefully and maintain an orderly consistency in their learning environment. We incorporate children’s individual interests into the curriculum on a daily basis as this is important across all learning contexts. Niya is very focused on building her tower of cylinders.

Throughout the day the children can choose from a wide range of learning experiences, from a range of curriculum areas such as biology, botany, geography, art, and maths to practical life including food preparation, baking, washing dishes and windows.

We have an established indoor-outdoor ˜ ow that follows the seasons and connects the children to daily changes in Nature. Indoor activities include children working with colourful puzzle maps, construction materials, moveable alphabets, and a ‘bank’ with thousands, hundreds, tens and units for children to manage. Model animals are classiÿ ed into biological families, diurnal or nocturnal, and world geographical areas. Tamariki study life cycles of the frog, butter˜ y, corn and apple. Children use real tools and objects to engage in real work. Hammers and saws are for woodwork, while rakes, brooms, and spades are for the vegetable and ˜ ower gardens. Kaiako incorporate children’s individual interests into the curriculum on a daily basis. Each year we have community festivals and evenings such as the Harvest Festival so that our tamariki can share our produce with their families, including walnuts, hazelnuts and Nashi pears from our lovely trees. We celebrate Matariki with a Lantern Parade so our children experience the beauty and excitement of the night sky, while singing and walking with their lanterns and later returning to the centre to share kai. Each day is a celebration of who we all are: Growing, changing, caring for ourselves and each other as well as our beautiful Mother Earth, being well prepared for the children’s next educational and social steps in their lives.
