Showcasing our remarkable men Welcome to the 2021 edition of the annual Men@Work publication produced by the Wairarapa Times-Age. It complements the Women in Business magazine also produced by the Wairarapa Times-Age annually. So diverse are their professions it’s mind blowing. Without exception, all are proud of what they have achieved or for whom they work. It’s inspiring, almost
addictive, to speak and photograph them. Their enthusiasm rubs off. Showcasing remarkable men in our region is an awesome task. We’ve come across men who have completely changed their life’s path and re-invented themselves.
In this issue, many men talk about creating balance in their lives which has resulted in being more directly involved with their partners and children on a daily basis – others have chosen to commit full-on for four days a week, giving them that valuable and extended weekend.
Others have recognised their skills and adapted them into a business which secures a way of life suitable to Wairarapa.
Many of these men’s businesses contribute indirectly to community organisations which thrive on
this support. Without these often boutique industries, there are products and services which we would need to bring in from outside the region. Living local, buying local and reading local. It makes your heart sing. Take time to have a browse and celebrate like we have these amazing men.

Wairarapa Mitsubishi
Bumper sales of a tried-and-true brand
BRENT COOPER – DEALER PRINCIPAL AT WAIRARAPA MITSUBISHI. Covid-19 has not stopped Brent and Tracey Cooper, and the staff at Wairarapa Mitsubishi, celebrating their best year in business yet. Brent enthusiastically points out Mitsubishi leads the way in vehicle sales – being #1 brand, #1 in Ute sales (the Triton) and #1 in car sales locally year to date. The Mastertonbased dealership is one of eight Mitsubishi Diamond Dealers in New Zealand in 2020. The Diamond Dealer Award recognises outstanding performance in every aspect of a business – sales, customer satisfaction, finance, service, parts sales, and vehicle presentation.
This is not the first time Wairarapa Mitsubishi has featured in the national awards, Brent winning the Managing Director of the Year Award in 2017. This came only two years after buying the former long-standing McKenzie Motors in Masterton. Brent is a former diesel mechanic from Eketahuna who ran his own business there for 10 years. These days he’s turning heads in the car dealership world. Brent says his team of 20 all play a major part in creating a great service. The office staff know each customer by name, the parts team keep everything well stocked, and the groomers and yardmen keep vehicles and the
forecourt looking well-presented and tidy. Wairarapa Mitsubishi has been on a sharp upward curve ever since the Coopers took over the business in 2015. In years gone by, the dealership was McKenzie Motors and before that Sharples. Brent attributes part of their current success to the Triton Ute, the top selling utility vehicle in Wairarapa for the past two years. “The Triton is one of the best Utes on the market and is a top brand sold in New Zealand in recent years.” All up Mitsubishi has seven vehicle models from which to choose from. Brent concedes lockdowns do impact business, but people appear to have spare
money, usually spent maybe overseas, and they are looking towards upgrading their vehicles instead. Farmers are also very aware of the quality of the Triton and are loyal to the brand. For Brent and his team, there’s no greater satisfaction than seeing a customer drive off in their new Mitsubishi. “Models like Mirage, Lancer and Galant are all names which slip off the tongue and are memorable family cars. It’s a great reliable brand and it’s great to see it forging ahead.” “No one knows the future, but rest assured, we will be giving the same high level of service to customers for years to come.”

B.W. O’Brien & Co Ltd
Composting New Zealand
Keeping conditions just right in Wairarapa The O’Brien family has been helping Wairarapa both cool down and stay warm for over four decades – and are showing no signs of slowing down. In 1974, Bernie O’Brien began his refrigeration and air-conditioning business in Masterton and in 1980, his son Lyn purchased the business with wife, Colleen. These days, both their son and daughter work within the business. They have a great team, all with an important role to play. Ash O’Brien enthuses about the company’s greatest asset being their team who have a wealth of experience, explaining that they have been able to create a long and stable workforce mainly by training their own with four apprentices in training currently. A great example of local business solidly servicing Wairarapa. When it comes to freezing, cooling, or heating, the B.W. O’Brien experienced team can find a solution for any situation, be it in the home, office, farm, café, business, or your vehicle. B.W. O’Brien works with clients to design, install, service and maintain all commercial refrigeration. This includes all kinds of chillers, freezers, rural refrigeration, and dairy farm refrigeration. When it comes to heat pumps B.W. O’Brien is Wairarapa’s only accredited Daikin Dealer. Heat pumps are an efficient and effective way to heat/cool any area. No-obligation free quotes and home assessments are offered to ensure that the heat pump is sized correctly to do the job. And in your car? Vehicle air conditioning requires maintenance just like your home air conditioning. B.W. O’Brien has specifically trained engineers, to service and repair vehicle air conditioning.
Wonderful service all round from everyone at O’Briens so thank you. This is the third time we have used you guys and you haven’t disappointed!” They will also visit farms and forestry blocks to maintain heavy vehicle air conditioning. The Covid virus and resulting lockdowns have certainly meant the B.W. O’Brien team have looked for even more solutions to assist their customers in business or at home. Accessibility during lockdown and stock limitation has caused them to think laterally – something they are good at after nearly half a century of service to Wairarapa. All this has not stopped a bumper year. Amongst major projects B.W. O’Brien has been involved with are the new Greater Wellington Regional Council building in Masterton, the Five Rivers Medical Complex in Greytown, the Greytown Fire Station new-build and an industrial building at Waingawa. As a local business, B. W. O’Brien is extremely proud to serve Wairarapa and is committed in supporting schools, organisations, and individuals via sponsorships. Its proud name will be seen in many places.

KAHU HAYES.
Can-do attitude leads to management role Composting New Zealand is enjoying rapid growth as more and more people discover what it has to offer. Located at Waingawa, off Norfolk Road, Composting New Zealand provides an easy way to bulk purchase product for your home or business. Customers can either pick up, or have delivered to them, over 30 different products, from mulches and growing mixes, to aggregates and firewood. The person responsible for making sure everything runs smoothly is Site Manager Kahu Hayes. Kahu grew up on the Kapiti Coast and worked for a Christchurch company building commercial glass houses, before moving to Wairarapa with partner Corinne, where they now live on a lifestyle block at Clareville with their one-year-old daughter Havaana. Kahu joined Composting New Zealand as a firewood processor one year ago, but Chief Operating Officer Andrew Reid and Programme Manager Lawrence Cheetham quickly noticed the leadership qualities Kahu has. “He was putting the effort in and was absolutely fantastic with the staff, but particularly with the public,” Lawrence recalls. “He has a can-do attitude and is very keen
to learn and develop and grow the business - and the business is growing!” Moving from production to customer service was “quite a leap”, Kahu says. “In the past I have always been part of a team. I was quite a shy person and was nervous at the start. “I was used to being away in the corner with the chainsaw, not talking to people, and I didn’t have much confidence in myself. The support of Corinne has been really important for me. “I had to step outside my comfort zone. It is all fresh for me and I really enjoy it - it is going well.” Kahu has created the feeling of an extended family among his team of six staff. “I’ve turned our workplace into a positive environment where people come to work with a smile, and we have a bit of a laugh. We look after each other.” Kahu is enthusiastic about the products Composting New Zealand stocks, with the company moving in exciting new environmental and sustainable directions. “I’m proud of our products 100 per cent especially the organic Bio-Grow certified products.”

Osborne Group
Stihl Shop Greytown
THE STIHL SHOP GREYTOWN TEAM FROM LEFT: KERRY MARTIN, JANINE ROSSITER, OWEN MARTIN, DARREN WILLIAMS, ANGELA BELL AND TIM WILSON.
Make no mistake – it’s a Stihl The choice is striking:
An affordable line trimmer that starts, without you teaching your kids 15 new swear words! A hedge trimmer that actually trims the hedge, and not just the leaves? A chainsaw that comes ready to use, not to confuse. A blower that won’t suck in a year’s time. The list goes on, but you get the idea. At Stihl Shop Greytown, not only do they service and repair the machines sold in store and online, but they also look after all other major brands of outdoor power equipment. The skilled service they provide also comes with friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable advice. Think chainsaws, ride-on mowers, line trimmers, lawn mowers, water blasters, leaf blowers – in fact, anything needed to keep gardens and lawns looking neat and tidy, they are all available in the Greytown showroom on Main Street south. The business is owned by Owen Martin, a qualified mechanic who has turned his hand to fixing all manner of mechanical objects in his time. Hailing from Masterton, Owen bought into the Stihl Shop franchise in 2010, originally located next to the White Swan. The team quickly outgrew the site and in 2013 the Greytown Trust Lands Trust
offered to build a purpose-built building and the team relocated in December that year. While the Stihl Shop is a franchise, each store is independently owned and you can be assured you are supporting local business, even when purchasing online. Owen enjoys supporting the local community and is proud is give back to local organisations, including Greytown Primary School, Carterton School, Martinborough Motorcycle Club, Autism NZ, Relay for Life, Fortitude Gym, and the Ngawi Fishing Competition. He has a good team supporting him. In the workshop there are mechanics - Darren Williams who has been with Stihl Shop for seven years, and Kerry Martin (Owen’s Dad) who keeps meaning to retire but enjoys the work too much. Tim Wilson and Janine Rossiter work in the shop and bring a wealth of retail expertise and knowledge on the products stocked. Angela Bell completes the team, doing the admin and marketing. Owen says there is no doubt the Stihl products are the best on the market across petrol and battery powered. All Stihl products purchased are covered by the STIHL warranty and petrol tools will receive a First Free Service. The workshop provides ongoing service and repairs by our trained technicians. This way, you can be sure that you will get the most out of your STIHL tools.
JASON OSBORNE RECEIVING HIS PRESTIGIOUS FELLOWSHIP AWARD FROM DR NIVES BOTICA REDMAYNE FCA, PRESIDENT OF CAANZ.
Accounting service with an eye on the community Jason Osborne has done the hard yards knowing what it’s like to start a business from scratch. When clients come to him asking for business and accounting advice, it comes from direct personal experience. His commitment to his profession had him recently awarded a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ). This Fellowship is nominated by his peers and is the highest possible acknowledgment available to accountants in Australia and New Zealand. Jason is extremely humbled by the honour. Jason was raised in South Wairarapa, growing up on a dairy farm near Featherston. After Kuranui College, he went on to study accounting at Massey University. After qualifying, he worked for a Wairarapa accounting firm, then he was Rathkeale College’s Executive Officer for seven years, before striking out on his own. He began Osborne Group in 2007 with four clients. These days Osborne Group spans two offices in Greytown and Masterton, has 15 staff and over a thousand clients. It is well-known as an accounting firm committed to forming close partnerships, enabling a unique understanding of each client’s situation customising the assistance required. “I like to think Osborne Group is way more than simply an accounting firm which sorts out how much tax you have to pay. With a huge skill set, including five Chartered
Accountants, we offer quality business advice.” Maxim Business Consulting, Osborne Group’s associate service, provides professional consulting services to rural, commercial and private clients. Advice is given on structure, management, risk mitigation, growth acceleration and general business counsel. “It allows people to set realistic goals reducing the risk of wandering through a business without any clear planning or goals. We believe knowing where you are heading, and with some idea of the result, is imperative,” adds Jason. “Maxim will even mentor people who have other accountants but want to take advantage of our business consulting service.” Jason’s service to the community is wellknown, having received a New Zealander of the Year Local Hero award in 2018. Jason and his staff adopt projects and offer subsidised fees to community groups. Working bees such as tidying up early childhood centre grounds and helping plant at the Lansdowne walking track, are amongst many. Jason is also well-known in many sporting circles, Wairarapa Hospice and Diabetes Wairarapa. “I just so love Wairarapa and see many enterprising people doing similar to myself, starting up in business, and I find sharing accounting and business skills is such a great way to help.”

J.B. Electrical Ltd
Comag Wairarapa
COMAG WAIRARAPA TEAM FROM LEFT LEON KLEINJAN, MITCH COOPER, CORY OAKLY-KURTZ, WARRICK ROSS AND JASON DE VRIES.
Plumbing, gas fitting and drain laying – meeting all your project needs Warrick Ross, the Director of Comag Wairarapa, has built a strong client base in the past four years. He and apprentice Mitch Hooper were joined by plumber/gas fitter/drainlayer, Jason de Vries, in February 2020 and in line with Comag’s commitment to support young people into trade training, Warrick has taken on two more apprentices, Cory Oakly-Kurtz and Leon Kleinjan. Warrick says the best way to beat the shortage of qualified tradespeople is to train your own. “All are extremely enthusiastic and as they learn their trade, they become increasingly useful and valuable,” says Warrick. It takes five years to qualify for the plumbing, gas fitting, drain laying trade and a further two years before being able to sign off on jobs. Warrick and his family moved from Matamata to Masterton in 2017. Comag Wairarapa was established and Warrick is one of nine directors. He enjoys the autonomy of his work, allied with the valuable experience of an established company, supporting him with quoting and admin services. Jason de Vries is from Wellington and moved to Wairarapa with his wife and four
children after three years in Perth. Warrick was thrilled to attract a tradesman with such qualifications and experience. Mitch is from Masterton and in his fourth year of his plumbing and gas fitting apprenticeship. He enjoys learning from his older colleagues. Building up a strong culture of good work ethic combined with managing a healthy work life balance is something Warrick strongly believes in. “We have an amazing team with good morale and an emphasis on working together as a unit.” With Wairarapa’s building industry so buoyant, Warrick says Comag is a huge asset in that it can offer all servicing from the exterior drainage services to the inside plumbing and heating services in the new high-tech homes. Comag has established a good rapport with several local builders and firms such as Wright Brothers Building Ltd and Jennian Homes. Both Warrick and Jason have young children and ensure Comag supports its community wherever possible, such as the Marist Junior Rugby, Solway Dressage and Opaki School where Warrick’s children attend. “Comag is a growing business we consider ourselves very much local and endeavour to support local.”
JOHN AND CONNOR BUTLER.
Father and Son Duo When John Butler left school in Lower Hutt, he was offered four apprenticeships – green keeping, building, plumbing or electrical.
local company, but after 10 years wanted to set out on his own and J.B. Electrical Ltd was formed. J.B. is John’s nickname.
Naturally drawn to things electrical, he chose that apprenticeship and has never regretted it, loving the variety of work he gets called out to do.
Connor initially thought of engineering as a career, but he didn’t like the idea of being stuck in a cold workshop and “in the same place everyday”. John asked Connor if he would like to do some work experience as an electrician. At first, Connor was not keen on the idea, but decided to give it a whirl.
Decades on, this enthusiasm for the trade has rubbed off on his son, Connor. In January 2021 he completed his apprenticeship, became fully qualified and joined his father as a tradesman in the family business, J.B. Electrical Ltd. John is thrilled to have his son join him and says it has made for an effective team. They are a congenial pair with a similar sense of humour, and instinctively know how to get into a project and get the job done well, and on time. They even share the same birthday Connor was born on 31 August, John’s 30th birthday. Customers like the father and son operation. The family dynamic is complete with John’s wife, Rachel who is the business administrator. Over the years, John has concentrated on commercial and light industrial electrical work. Initially following the family move to Wairarapa 28 years ago, he worked for a
Connor was hooked. He loves being “somewhere new everyday”. He has an affinity with modern technology involving data and detailed hi-tech equipment, such as camera systems. But mostly enjoys the industrial/mechanical work. Both men have their own vehicles. John’s is a van for urban areas, while Connor’s is a 4WD heavy duty Isuzu - great for getting to the hard-to-reach and far-flung parts of Wairarapa. Both father and son have similar interests. They like fishing and diving (Tora and Ngawi are favourites) and the occasional hunting trips – John says he goes along for the walk. Business is extremely busy however, and their days can be long. “It’s hard to get time off,” they both agree. However, they’re both in work they enjoy, and Connor is aiming to build himself a house, so it’s all go.

Ladymead Kennels and Caery
Tom Pitchforth Consulng
Helping Regional Kiwi Business Thrive Greytown local Tom Pitchforth has been working with Kiwi businesses to drive sales through Google for a decade. In that me, he’s worked with the likes of Kiwirail, Powershop, Vodafone and many other household brands, guiding their Search Engine Opmisaon (SEO) efforts. But Tom believes that the potenal of search markeng, which includes paid search ads and unpaid ‘organic’ results, is sll to be fully realised by many organisaons in our regions.
MICHAEL MACKLIN.
All kinds of animals making their way to Ladymead It is glaringly obvious Michael Macklin’s quiet, caring manner is picked up by the animals around him. Keen to please, they sit and gaze paently when he approaches. His own two dogs obediently come to him and sit hopefully. Molly and Cruz appear to know they are special. They were dogs, which clients could not have anymore. “It’s so tempng to collect dogs, I have to limit myself,” smiles Michael.
“Google is used by everyone - there’s almost no vercal where search engine performance isn’t worth focusing on”, Tom suggests. “Many highly successful businesses, parcularly those with a B2B or industrial bent are sll relying solely on tradional methods of markeng for customer acquision”. Search markeng, he says, gives businesses the chance to catch relevant people right in the moment they’re looking for a product, service or informaon. Tom sees plenty of untapped growth waing for Kiwi business owners who have the right strategy. Before entering the digital markeng industry, Tom worked across a variety of communicaons-based roles, building up a strong foundaon of copywring that would become central to his markeng strategies for clients. “The great thing about digital markeng is that it combines the technical with the creave. I always enjoy demonstrang to clients through measurement how good content directly affects their sales”. Tom brings a friendly, open-minded atude to his client relaonships, which he views as partnerships more than a ‘supplier-client’ arrangement. “I le the agency world to start my own business for a variety of reasons, but a big one was being able to own the client relaonships as well as the work”, Tom shares. “I think being across both the strategic discussions and doing the ‘on the tools’ work helps me deliver beer results to my clients.”
When he purchased Ladymead Kennels at Opaki, north of Masterton nearly three years ago, he immediately knew he had found his niche. Michael, wife Kate, and their children Ryley (4) and Samantha (20 months) enjoy the good life where love abounds. The family make a good team at the kennels, in a job which demands round the clock care and aenon. In the past year, they have made massive alteraons to the exercise yards, runs have been increased and re-designed, so each animal has their own entrance. Re-modelling of the car park off the state highway and landscaped gardens make for an aracve entrance.
Tom Pitchforth Consulng has markeng clients across the country, in a broad range of industries. “I enjoy working with businesses who might be at the start of their search markeng journey, but have a well-established business and understanding of who they are. I’ll tap into the knowledge and processes already exisng in the business and find ways to leverage that into a sound search markeng strategy.”
During holidays, Ladymead can house up to 90 dogs, regularly there’s about 50. This includes over 30 ‘day-care dogs’ which people drop off each morning. This is a new phenomenon in kennels according to Michael and one which is proving increasingly popular.
Tom’s business is fairly nomadic given his clientbase naonwide, but otherwise he bases himself in Greytown or in the
TOM PITCHFORTH.
My preference is always for in person meetings, especially when we’re figuring out the marketing strategy.” 3 Mile shared working space in Carterton. “My meeng places are usually my clients premises or on video chat” Tom says, while adding: “My preference is always for in person meengs, especially when we’re figuring out the markeng strategy”. He enjoys coming back to the South Wairarapa lifestyle aer travelling, as it offers a relaxed pace compared to larger cies. He hopes to see more businesses move operaons out to Wairarapa to support the local economy and job market. “We’re moving into an era where many of us don’t need to be living close to the city to have a fulfilling career. I think we’ll see more of a spread into the regions as me goes on and living costs in the city go up”. Asked what his main purpose for running a markeng consultancy is, Tom replies “I simply enjoy seeing people succeed in business. If I can help them do that, it’s a good day”.
“It’s far healthier for your dog to be in the company of others. It’s so important for their sociability.” A typical day starts at 7am when the dogs are let out for exercise. Day-care dogs also start to arrive. All the other boarding pets are also tended to. Yes, Ladymead also caters for cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and even recently they had a pig boarding with them. From there, the dogs kennels are cleaned and water buckets filled. By 10am, all boarding animals are seled back into their kennels and fed. At 2pm, the process of exercising, cleaning, and feeding begins all over again. Michael and his team have adopted an
open-all-hours policy, to enable pet owners flexibility for pick up and delivery. Best to call first, just to check Michael hasn’t had the rare opportunity to get away. He and Kate are ably assisted by Carla Smith, who has years of experience working with many types of animals. They have recently been joined by Julia Harrild, keen to learn the world of animal care.

FROM LEFT, RICHARD CLATWORTHY, MICHAEL BILLINGTON, MARK RICHARDSON AND CLIVE BAXTER.
In Wellington in the 1970s, Ross Eggers Motors had car sale yards in Cambridge Terrace and Taranaki Street.
Known as the “car yard mile”, this was the place to go on a Sunday aernoon if you were into cars and wanted to dream or choose a good used car.
If you were really serious you could call into one of the showrooms and chances are you would come across Ross Eggers and his team. By the 90s, the Supreme Motor Group was well-known for selling quality vehicles like Mercedes and Land Rover, as well as a vast array of models. All up there were six car yards at one stage. These days, Ross has one car yard, Kiwi Magic, in northern Queen Street, Masterton. He’s well-known for the amazing selecon, of the quality way he produces his vehicles for sale, and the aer-care service. All are groomed inside and out and are presented with mag wheels. Ross had a yearning to sell cars since he was a boy growing up in rural Upper Moutere outside Nelson. When he le school, he sought a car sales job. “It just didn’t happen; I just wasn’t suave enough,” he laughs. He ended up compleng a mechanic’s apprenceship with Keith Robson who ran a fleet of internaonal harvesters.

“I worked hard, it was great training, and he was a great boss. I thanked him personally, years later for that training.” When Ross got to Wellington, however, he sll wanted to sell vehicles and that’s where it all began. “I’m a people-person, I just really enjoy helping people,” he says. “Cars oen sell themselves; we just facilitate the sale.” When he was considering rering, he looked to Wairarapa where he and wife, Ruth, purchased a home in Masterton. “I lasted a few weeks and thought, it’s boring doing nothing.” Gravitang towards car yards, he helped the late Roger Brader clean his cars, and started selling the odd vehicle. “There was land available at the north end of Queen Street, and it went from there. Here I am with Kiwi Magic.” His catch phrase is “Peace of Mind Motoring” – a saying he loves, and which he spied on the Queensland coast. And the name Kiwi Magic – Ross likes the name “because it doesn’t sound like a car yard, but it is!”

KONRAD SCHWANECKE AND HIS WELL-KNOWN LANDCRUISER - “HIP 4 U”. THE NUMBER PLATE WAS A GIFT FROM HIS COLLEAGUE IAN DENHOLM.
Wairarapa’s medical services looking forward This year, Selina Sutherland Hospital, the private non-profit charitable Trust, which rents its premises from the Wairarapa District Health Board, will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Founded by forwardthinking doctors, who knew that attracting specialists to a small rural region would be easier, if they could offer a mix of public and private work, this small hospital with a dedicated team of health professionals, offers personal care and reasonable prices, when compared to their bigger competitors. Having worked as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Wairarapa for 19 years, 18 of those in both public and private practice, Konrad Schwanecke has seen the enormous challenges facing healthcare in Wairarapa. “The time has come again, to expand on what has been achieved, and plan for the future,” he believes. Living provincially is a very attractive proposition during these uncertain covid times. “New subdivisions, and retirement villages are springing up everywhere, and many people commute to Wellington for work. The growth in our region is evident, and it puts extra pressure on all our infrastructure, roads, water, sewerage plants, transport, housing, and healthcare. An independent, small private surgical hospital, which could offer top-class facilities, operating theatres, and extra beds, would be an asset to the community, catering to their growing needs. Such a facility could work in partnership
with the Wairarapa DHB, by alleviating pressure on their resources. “A wellequipped facility will attract specialists that are so needed to the region.” Konrad is very enthusiastic about the potential for this ambitious project to be realised, and hopes the Selina Sutherland Board will offer their considerable knowledge and experience and support this endeavour. It will require financial investment, skills and energy. “I have the backing and expertise of some generous, local individuals, such as developer David Borman, and renowned architect Professor David Kernohan, as well as Darryl and James Silverwood of Silverwood Architects, who are all prepared to help with this exciting venture. If a feasibility study reveals it to be viable, it may take a few years to complete such a project.” If anyone would like to know more, or offer their help, or invest in this surgical hospital, please feel free to contact Konrad on email: dr.kjschwanecke@xtra.co.nz “We would like for this to be a communityowned hospital, for the future of healthcare in Wairarapa. Meantime it is business as usual at Selina Sutherland Hospital for Konrad, and the other doctors and nurses who work there. “We will continue to do our best to restore those in need to good health,” says Konrad.

Getting people doing what they love doing – LIVING!
Grant Coleman is the new manager of Aotea Electric in Wairarapa. He’s the perfect example of someone who changes career mid-stream and is now forging a successful path in the electrical industry. Starng out his work life as a mechanic, eventually running his own business, in 2002, he decided to concentrate on things more electrical and embarked on an adult apprenceship. It’s been an excing move for Grant, and he says now heading Aotea Electric has been rewarding. Aotea Electric Wairarapa Ltd is part of a naonwide body, ulising valuable company structure but remaining as a stand-alone company with its own directors. Located at 71 Bentley Street in Masterton it’s the well-known corrugated iron, well posioned building to cover Wairarapa. Grant has the ideal background with his mechanical and electrical technical ability, alongside management skills. There are 11 staff based out of Masterton including five apprences and two staff who keep the office side of things running smoothly. “Aotea is a brand you can trust provided by a friendly team which can help, as no job is too big or small for us.” “Joining Aotea was ideal as it adds significant buying power and has allowed us

He is proud of the prompt, oen same-day service they can offer. Being there for our customers on a 24/7 basis with our aerhours callout service. Aotea Electric is very much a New Zealand success story. It began in 1973 with the formaon of an electrical contracng company in Dunedin. Growth into other locaons was steady unl the economic downturn in the mid-1980s saw a decline in the company’s size. A management buy-out occurred in 1990. The new owners focused on providing a quality based professional delivery ulising the years of experience already gained by the exisng staff. The success of this approach has seen a steady growth, and it now has businesses in 23 locaons around New Zealand, including Masterton which opened in 2015. “We can cater for all your electrical and HVAC needs, whether it be commercial projects, new house builds, rewires, or small repair jobs. We have a specialist heat pump, mechanical and refrigeraon team that can look aer all your heang and cooling needs too, whether it is a new install, a repair, or an alteraon. Come and see us.”

Kayne was born and raised in Bulls, aending Huntly School in Marton and Feilding High School. His legacy at Huntly was winning the school’s first ever triathlon and having a trophy named aer him. “Sport has always been present in my life from a young age. I discovered a passion and curiosity of the human body at high school and knew physio was a great way to combine the two.” Kayne completed a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at Otago University graduang in 2017 and went straight into full me work in a private pracce in Hawke’s Bay. He spent four years there working in private pracce and during this me worked closely with the Napier Old Boys Marist Rugby team which saw them make it to semi-finals, finals and then a win! The surprise interrupon of a global pandemic put a dampener on Kayne and Molly’s OE plans and so they decided that a change was as good as a holiday and that
there was sll more of New Zealand to see. It was at that me that they got talking with exisng Back in Acon physiotherapist Olivia Browne (and fellow Otago classmate and friend) about Wairarapa and working at Back in Acon. Connecons were made along with visits to the region before Kayne and Molly made the move “Working for a company who looks aer its employees has always been a high priority for the both of us.” Wairarapa has been a great move, it is close for Molly to see her sisters in Wellington but not too far away to return home and close for my family in Palmerston North.” Since arriving in Wairarapa Kayne has got stuck into the community and his area of passion. This season he has been the physio for Marist 1st XV and assisted with the Wairarapa-Bush U16 team. “My interests will always be in the sporng side of physiotherapy. It is what brings me the most joy. But in this role skills must be quite diverse to cover a broad range of injuries and presentaons. It’s been great to widen my range of skills and adopt them when seeing clients in clinic to help them achieve the best outcomes.”

Driver training from a seasoned professional Jim Laird is Wairarapa’s most experienced course provider for driver licences, endorsements, and assessment services. He is also a Certified Spreadmark Tester, calibrating fertilising spreading equipment on the ground, and in the air, for maximum accuracy and effectiveness. Jim has half a century experience in the transport industry, and nearly 20 years as an accredited licence tester. His clients include individuals who wish to gain a particular licence, and businesses requiring staff to be trained, so they can use specific vehicles or equipment. Along with courses for the popular Heavy Vehicle Class 2-5, Jim offers training for forklifts and heavy machinery, such as front-end loaders, excavators, road rollers, Elevated Work Platforms, telehandlers and HiAb cranes. Elevated Work Platform training has become especially popular after more stringent safety requirements were introduced in April 2020. These include scissor lifts, cherry pickers, knuckle boom cranes and workshop gantries. Jim teaches the skills to transport dangerous goods too, like acid, fuel, and flammable products. He also trains for trailer licence and vehicle recovery.
The practical assessments are in vehicles provided by the applicant or hired when necessary. The courses are completed to a schedule to suit clients and Jim often travels to many locations to deliver his training. Having built strong relationships with transport companies and businesses that use heavy machinery, Jim has gained a reputation for offering quality training that fully prepares drivers for the real world. And those trainees have included everyone from college students wanting their heavy truck licence, to equestrian enthusiasts wanting the qualification to drive a horse truck. He tries to make the training as userfriendly as possible, and this is happily received by the trainees. There is a shortage of heavy truck and trailer drivers in New Zealand. According to Jim, it can be an exciting and diverse career on the road. If you are interested in knowing more, please contact Jim. He has many valuable contacts and details to share.

From the largest stadiums of Europe, playing in front of crowds of thousands with some of the greatest players of the game ... to building sites in Wairarapa, working alongside his two sons. Established in 2016 after his retirement from professional rugby, Stan wanted to create a business both his sons, Stan Jnr and Malachy, could be a part of in the future. So once both boys finished Wairarapa College, they put down their books and picked up the tools. Stan Snr who qualified as a builder “well over” 20 years ago, is proud of the team he has created. Based in Masterton, they operate all over Wairarapa offering new residential builds, renovations and demolitions.
The Wrights employ a further four senior carpenters who bring with them years of skills, care and craftmanship, and five eager apprentices benefiting from all that combined experience. In the past 12 months work has varied, with a highlight being the complete transformation of ‘Molly Cottage’ on Kempton Street in Greytown, where the team were honoured to take on the 126 year old cottage, and give her a new lease of life.

Golden celebration for accounting firm Grant Jackson may be one of the newest faces in the Sellar & Sellar accounting team but the client base he is inheriting, is from one of the longest standing accountants with the firm, Brian Lloyd. Brian retires in June 2022 after a stellar service with the reputable firm spanning 50 years. He is wellknown for his broad knowledge and experience in all areas of accounting and is enjoying passing all this on to Grant, although it’s a whole new world of practice than what he entered in 1972. Brian has found himself, in recent years, giving financial advice to the grandsons of his original clients. “It’s time to move on,” he decided.
Grant is from South Canterbury graduating with an honours degree in accounting from Otago University. He has had 11 years of chartered accounting experience in several regions including Dunedin, Tauranga, and Wellington. His previous position with Zeal Systems had him introduced to accounting software, which helped businesses manage their entire operation. “I would work with my clients to tailor their accounting system so they could use technology to improve their processes, work more efficiently, and give them an edge in the market.” Grant and his wife Catherine along
with young son, Hugo, discovered Wairarapa when visiting from Tauranga and decided this was the region for them. Grant is thrilled to gain the position with Sellar & Sellar. Catherine is an early childhood teacher and teaches at the Scoula Montessori pre-school which the couple established at Solway in Masterton. Meantime, Brian has no definite plans in his retirement. “Life recently has taught me not to do that. You never know what’s around the corner.” He has found great company in his two grandsons who live in the Hutt Valley. Football is their passion along with mountain biking and Brian is being goaded to get a bike and join them.

THE CORNERSTONE BRICKLAYING TEAM FROM LEFT: SHECHANIAH HING, BRODIE MCDOWELL, URIAH HING. FRONT FROM LEFT: MORGAN AUSTIN AND CURTIS KRIVAN.
Quality delivery of ancient craft – brick & stone work Bricklaying has its own language amongst the tradies. Morgan Austin should know, he’s been speaking it for the past 20 years after he took on a brick and blocklaying apprenticeship completing it in Wairarapa under the eagle eye of the master, John Banner.
“We talk about the ‘feel’ of the stone, how colours ‘leap’ at you and how the lustre of stone shines in the sun and rain,” explains Morgan. “The term ‘brickie’ was used disparagingly in the past, but we’ve come into our own in the building trade, adding that bit of class to houses, commercial premises and vineyards around Wairarapa.” Morgan talks passionately about block work at Greytown’s Alexia Winery, of an Edridge Construction house in Glen Morven using white blocks, crafting an arched feature schist entrance for Quality Builders, and of a house in Martinborough where he worked with bricks from Italy. “Each job becomes a work of art, and we try to add that personal signature to make them unique. I am very proud of each.” Morgan leads a team of five which always includes a college student getting a taste of brick laying. As well as himself, Curtis Krivan is a qualified brick and block layer and there are three apprentices, “all of which are already exceptional tradesmen”, adds Morgan. Uriah is almost qualified, upon completion he will receive a leather handled trowel – Cornerstone tradition.
Upper Hutt born, Morgan lives in Masterton with partner, Jasmine. They have three sons between them. Morgan was just 16 when he got the taste of brick laying in Auckland “I was hooked.” He considers himself lucky to have been taken on as a 2nd year apprentice by John Banner in Masterton, who taught him the practical and the aesthetic forms of using bricks. In those days, there were many bricks from demolitions – ‘demo bricks’ – and they could be used beautifully. “They’re like gold now.” He likes the modern materials though, and enjoys the exterior tile look and schist stonework, often admired. Mortar colours are vast too, so any combination of brick and mortar can be used to great effect. The motto he teaches his lads is “Would that be acceptable at your grandma’s?” Morgan is proud also of how well his team works together. “We’re like family.” He encourages them to talk openly and be kind to one another, especially in this chaotic covid world. A close second to brick and stone, Morgan is passionate about boxing. He’s a coach with the Wairarapa Boxing Academy and one of his team, Brodie McDowell, is one of his students. He loves the science of the sport and the discipline it evokes.

Waving the flag for the print industry Leading sustainable practices The tactile nature of print will always excite and appeal to Peter Watson, Managing Director of Printcraft in Masterton.
products we produce. I had one new customer say they should have come to us years ago, which is really heartening.”
“People have an emotional connection to paper which engages them. Feeling and smelling the pages of a book or a newspaper, or admiring creative packaging is far more sensory than what one sees on a screen,” says Pete. “It draws you in to the subject matter and commands your full attention. What better way to switch off and improve your mental wellbeing than flicking through the pages of a good book or magazine.”
While waving the flag for the print industry, Peter is also keen to dispel some myths around sustainability.
Printcraft, founded in Wairarapa in the 1930s, has evolved into a business providing a multitude of services. From brand creation and management within the Design hive studio, to print and production of packaging, labels, and signage. Packaging, in particular, is a fastexpanding service Printcraft is excited about. “With Covid, businesses are having to look closer to home to source suppliers or buy locally made goods… and they’re liking what they find on their own doorstep,” says Peter. “There is a huge advantage being able to meet clients, talk face-to-face, touch and see the
“There is a common misconception about print, that can cloud the judgement of marketers, media buyers and consumers. Myths, that it destroys forests, creates waste, and uses excessive energy and water to make. Well in my experience they are all false. Print is in fact a business leader in sustainable practices. An industry which has reduced its carbon footprint by 97% over the last 20 years.” Peter says 70 per cent of paper is recycled in New Zealand, ink is vegetable-based and 100 per cent renewable, and packaging is moving towards totally compostable products. He’s more than qualified to make those statements after working 21 years as an employee, manager and now owner of Printcraft, after taking it over from long standing owner Lance Johnson two years ago.
Printcraft still retains its ‘family owned’ business feel that Lance so effortlessly created, and Peter’s management of his team is no different. “We have a close-knit team, it’s a pleasure coming to work each day. We are brimming with ideas and energy so when a client comes in, we take great care to listen to them. I strongly believe a successful project is rooted in a deep understanding of its objectives. Further to that, our underlying principles are clarity, simplicity, and a belief that a functional and emotional approach are equally as important.” Clients will soon be able to see a new improved look to Printcraft, who are currently undergoing their own make-over. “We’ve been so inspired by our clients’ positive feedback on how much we contribute here, we’ve decided to rebrand ourselves. It’s a chance to freshen things up and really showcase the vast areas of design and print that Printcraft has to offer. We can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

Heavy Diesel Tech
My Ride Masterton
FROM LEFT KURT ANDERSON, HAYDEN BENNETT AND NEIL ANDERSON WORKING ON A FORESTRY SKIDDER.
Keeping the big machines up and running Heavy diesel mechanic Neil Anderson enjoys the challenge of working on large machines. “The bigger, the better!” Anything used in farming, forestry, mining, and construction really. Neil has done his share of work in all these industries and eight years ago, he and his family moved to Wairarapa setting up business in the Waingawa Industrial area. The demand for skilled tradesmen who can work on such machines is huge and Neil and his team of three are extremely busy being called out to jobs throughout the Wellington region. “There is enormous satisfaction looking after these big machines and making them go. Since he was young, Neil loved pulling things apart and re-building them.” Neil and wife, Audie, hail from Dunedin. Raised in the Te Anau region, Neil’s father was a DOC and Forest Service worker, so there was plenty of outdoors life. The pair met in Dunedin and what followed was an adventuresome time. Time was spent with agricultural machinery firms, at a goldmine in Palmerston working on its machinery, and in the Milford area servicing machines. “We built up a great reputation, but the work was intense, so we went farming in the Wanaka hill country for a time.” It was tough going and Neil realised his heavy machinery skills was where they should concentrate. Hence the move to Wairarapa for a fresh start. Neil is joined at Heavy Diesel Tech by his brother Kurt Anderson and engineer, Hayden Bennett. Neil and Audie’s reputation has followed them, and they are also called upon to advise on what machinery should be purchased by industry clients. This often means a trip back to Dunedin to assess equipment. They enjoy the visit but say Wairarapa is treating them well and their three children are well settled. Cycling in Wairarapa and indeed the rest of New Zealand is at an all-time high. Andy Curtis-Cody, co-owner of My Ride Masterton says people of all ages, gender, and lifestyle have been coming into the store looking to buy or restore their bicycles. Often, it will be the whole family wanting to get on two wheels and enjoy the Wairarapa roads together. He runs the business with co-owner Deb Allen and bike mechanic, John Stevens. Another John (Allen) - Deb’s husband, helps on Saturday earning the name ‘Saturday John’. All are enthusiastic cyclists who know their stuff and can help you on the way to cycling bliss. Covid-19 has caused many people to re-focus, consider what’s important in life, and think how to spend their leisure time. Sales, and the interest in cycling, were trending up before covid and now that trend has greatly increased. During lockdown, Andy was delighted how many people were out on bikes. “The roads were empty and many families with young kids were out cycling and enjoying themselves.” Electric bikes are the fastest growing part of the business. Andy says around 15 per
cent of sales are e-bikes. As with many New Zealand businesses, covid has effected supply chains and with high demand, it is difficult to stock a full range of e-bikes. Andy finds many people are choosing an active older age or retirement and e-bikes are perfect for them. “They make getting out and about just that bit easier.” Then there’s the road bikes for those wanting to see Wairarapa at a leisurely pace, and feel the wind in their face. Mountain biking remains very popular and there are new trends with gravel biking and bike packing. Bike racing is on the rise too, with the North Island Team Series running again this spring and involving local sponsors. The annual Tour of Wairarapa, hosted by Athletics and Cycling Masterton (ACM) is being re-modelled to reflect some of these new trends and is likely to run in January 2022. Andy is part of the ACM committee looking at the best way of doing this. For Andy himself, he’s never happier than when out on one of his bikes. A former clinician, he spent 30 years working in New Zealand DHBs. Buying into My Ride is a new career direction, and he feels he continues to make a positive contribution to people’s health and wellbeing.

Masterton Computer Services
Loan Market
Friendly, affordable IT solutions: a new lease on life for your computer There’s nothing more satisfying for Brent Pearce than working on a computer - and handing it back to the client “in as good shape as the day they bought it”. The Masterton local and experienced computer technician set up his own business, Masterton Computer Services, in November last year. Though his company is fairly new on the scene, Brent has spent close to a quarter of century in the IT world - repairing and upgrading a range of computers, and providing support for major government and commercial organisations. At Masterton Computer Services, as well as selling new and ex-lease machines, Brent specialises in repairs and upgrades for a range of computer makes, models and ages. In his first year, Brent’s new client base has grown considerably receiving “two to three” new enquiries a day. This he attributes not only to his years of experience (and friendly, jovial manner), but his commitment to affordable pricing - and passion for working with older models and “nursing them back to health”. Some older brands, he says, can get a new lease on life just by replacing the operating system - which can be a huge money saver for clients. “You can’t do much about the age of a computer. But you can do a few things to keep it from slowing down - whether that’s cleaning it out, adding some new memory, and providing alternative software that best suits the machine,” Brent says. “I do try to keep prices as cheap as possible. IT really is too expensive for a lot of people these days - especially when replacing a machine. “For me, it’s not about making a huge profit - it’s about helping people with their computers, and making enough to pay the bills.” Brent, originally from Auckland, first started working with computers in the late 90s beginning with some training through UCOL but primarily “learning on the job”. In Wairarapa, he spent 18 years with Crockford Computers, where he was heavily involved with the DataCom contracts working with large organisations such ACC, Foodstuffs, NZ Post, ASB Bank and Lotto. He decided to start Masterton Computer

Services after being made redundant from his IT job, thanks to covid. “I thought I could either sit on the dole - or start something myself, and put my skills to good use.” As well as computer repairs, Brent can also give clients instruction on how to use their new set-up, and can advise on computer maintenance and virus protection. He operates Wairarapa-wide, and is happy to travel to assist clients in their home. Clients, he says, appreciate his straightforward approach to technical explanations. “I like to keep things simple - no point in drowning people in computer jargon!” To celebrate his first year in business, Brent and Maria organised a charity raffle, with proceeds going to Wellington Free Ambulance.

Up to date financial advice from the experts Matt Spicer is a registered financial advisor and has offered money advice along with a keen listening ear to potential borrowers for over 20 years. Before this he spent a decade in banking. Matt reports the past 12 months have been an extremely busy time in the financial sector with record approvals and settlements coming out of the Loan Market office in Wairarapa. The lending has been predominantly in the construction sector with many sections in new housing subdivisions around the region getting snapped up very quickly. Matt and his colleague Tania Finlayson, help guide people through the maze of applying for finance. They sit and learn about people’s lives, hear their ambitions, and most importantly, their financial situation, to see if this translates to being eligible to borrow money. There’s a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ work before the actual application is submitted. “We’ve all had years of experience in the finance industry and keeping up with the trends is vital to helping people get their end goal.” The Loan Market team are proud that they keep up with the very latest trends. “We save our clients time, cost and hassle and they glean from our wealth of knowledge and experience.” Matt says lenders are always making policy changes, and with the added impact of Covid, they must be top of their game to give correct

This applies to both existing homes and building new ones.” Matt joined the Australasian Loan Market franchise seven years ago. It carried on his work in assisting borrowers to purchase residential and investment properties, lifestyle blocks, building dream homes, re-fixing loans, and re-financing in general. Getting away from the office is important to Matt who enjoys time with his family. He helps wife, Lauren, with her early childhood centre, He Pounamu, at Dalefield too, sometimes doing the ‘van run’ and helping look after the menagerie of animals they have at the centre. “There’s always chores to be done which gives me great exercise and a break from the ‘desk job.’

Mobility Wairarapa
STEVE TAYLOR IN HIS MASTERTON STORE.
Great range of mobility aids to ensure independence There’s a certain irony that a motorbike sidecar racing champion owns and operates a mobility service, Mobility Wairarapa. There’s a yawning gap between the hairraising breakneck speed of sidecar racing to the mobility scooters which max out at 15 kms/hr. Steve (Spike) Taylor looks quite at home however amongst the mobility scooters, walking frames, walking sticks and health aids in his showroom at the Masterton shop. A fitter and turner by trade, his skills translate beautifully to repairing and maintaining the scooters, which help multitudes of residents, with mobility problems, get out and about in the community. Steve’s sales and service centre has a busy backroom/workshop, and he can turn his hand to most repairs. Batteries failing is common, so are flat tyres and then there’s rear axles breaking or bearings needing replacing. He loves his work and likes that it is helping people. He enjoys seeing the scooters give people a sense of independence and freedom. Steve is used to being in the news with his sidecar racing. The winner of four New
Zealand Championships on his 1000cc Suzuki, he also gained attention some years back when he donated a scooter to a strokeridden pensioner who had had his stolen off his front porch. Born in Blenheim, Steve came to Wairarapa as a 12-year-old. He gained his trade at the Woburn railway workshops – “a great place to learn everything.” He then spent 12 years at Hansells in the engineering section and took time out to help raise a son and daughter. When working in a motorcycle shop, he met the woman who owned the Mobility Centre. She was wanting to sell and 10 years ago, Steve took over. When not found ‘out the back’ fixing mobility aids, and not on his motorbike, Steve can also be spied at Henley Lake where he races radiocontrolled boats. So, should you or a family member need help with movement around town or in the house, the Mobility Wairarapa is a great place to visit. Stock includes walkers, walking sticks, wheelchairs, crutches, reachers, shower stools, toilet seat raisers, cushions, lumbar rolls, commodes and urinals, jar openers, – and of course, the mobility scooters. These days they come in many colours – yellow being the most popular at present.

GETTING NAKED FOR A GREAT CAUSE

swelled. The result is various store departments being prompted each month by the men in a myriad of poses – all tastefully done without a stitch of clothing. Mitre 10 MEGA Masterton prides itself on being an extremely community focussed organisation and has a long association with Life Flight – that wonderful service which provides both helicopter and fixed wing emergency services between Wairarapa and Wellington Hospital. When one of the store’s Team Leaders, Alistar Pike learned how much Life Flight was losing in revenue due to Covid when fundraisers were not able to be held – it got him thinking. He wanted to raise funds for this valuable service; highlight the family-feel of the Masterton store; have a laugh; and focus on an area he believes needs more attention and discussion – men’s health. The Mitre 10 MEGA Men’s naked calendar was born. Finding willing participants for each calendar month was initially challenging but as each man came on board, the excitement
Alistar says it has been a rewarding journey for everyone. “It is a story of self-discovery; stepping outside of personal comfort zones; of bonding and laughing at ourselves, while at the same time supporting one another through each photo shoot. The photographer has been Pete Nikolaison who willingly gave his time for the cause. Another Pete, Peter Watson of Printcraft is printing the calendars. All proceeds from the sales go direct to Life Flight. So, a big hand to the heroes of this story - Ollie Wright, Reagan Field, Daniel Downie, Dave Murphy, Jayden Lehmstedt, Danyon Wickham, Ejvind Frederiksen, Brent Stewart, Liam Kerr, Neal Mijares , Dave Maritz, Keelan Ward, Andrew Shearman, and Alistar Pike. Fresh approach while retaining traditional values Gavin Hodder has taken his extensive accounting and business coaching skills to a new level and is the newly appointed director of AMR Group in Masterton. AMR is the name for an established accounting firm, formerly Moore Markham’s and Woodhouse and Partners. These firms have their roots way back to early Wairarapa settlement. AMR is owned by an accounting and tax group, which also have accounting practices in Katikati and Nelson. Gavin describes AMR as a traditional accounting company with specialist skill sets – retaining the tradition of past service but bringing in the new. The Masterton group consists of two client consultants, Mike Flower and Alistair McLennan, plus five accountants, Julian Allen, Ben Crum, Ceilidh McPhee, Alana Molina, Taylah Coley-Chatterton, all supported by two administrators, Donna Paton and Faith Croawell. It’s a dynamic, skilled and professional team, which Gavin is looking forward to working alongside. In the past he has enjoyed working with businesses - assisting clients to optimise their potential by providing advice on structure, management, risk mitigation, growth acceleration and general business counsel. He is a great believer in succession planning too, which he thinks should be something considered early on by business owners and farmers. “Everyone should have a goal, otherwise, you can go wandering through your days,

working hard, and coming to an end without any idea of how to step down.” AMR is in refurbished offices on the ground floor of the Tranzit building in Masterton and one of the first challenges for Gavin is the overseeing of the completely new IT technology being installed to herald in the new beginning. The IT world is familiar to Gavin. It was where he spent his working life in the frenetic 1990s when computers were introduced to the workplace. He had 20 years in the IT industry working for multinationals, based in New Zealand. Half of that time was spent commuting from Carterton where he and wife, Maureen have chosen to live. Highly skilled and experienced in business management, analysis and process improvement, Gavin moved into business consulting, so he could work more in Wairarapa. It was where he was born and where his family have ancestral roots at Kokotau, near Carterton. Gavin’s father was with NZ Railways and the family moved away. Wairarapa was where Gavin wanted to return to. In recent years he has immersed himself in the community. He is Chair of Hospice Wairarapa, with a passion for improving palliative care in Wairarapa. He is also Chair of Greytown Sport and Leisure and has been involved with rugby at club, provincial and national levels.

Evolved Performance
The Art of Motorcycle Performance Hadyn Kennedy’s motorcycle maintenance and restoration business is a resounding success story. Having established the business in 2012, he has revved it up to being the place to go for all-things-motorcycle. Specialist machinery, tools and staff have methodically evolved the workshop into the place it is today. This automotive electrician has found his niche, and the motorcyclists are finding him from all around the country. Evolved Performance is in a large building in the rapidly filling Waingawa industrial area. This summer Hadyn will be adding a retail space where motorbike enthusiasts can come and find what the latest in riding gear and technology has to offer, as well as get advice on all-things-motorcycle. “I want to create a magnet for enthusiasts, in a welcoming space where riders can share ideas and learn about the latest trends on what riding has to offer.” Presentation is all important to Hadyn both in his business and, of course in the motorbikes he cares for. His state-ofthe-art workshop offers motorbike dynotuning, custom-part fabrication, general motorbike servicing and parts, performance modifications, insurance repairs, and tyre changes. Graphic signage against dark beams of golden macrocarpa that cover the large wooden poles holding up the massive mezzanine floor and stairway, clad in timber and steel. It makes for an inspiring place to visit and work. The team often hear accolades for their business presentation and workshop cleanliness. The team are all highly skilled individuals in their respective areas. Chance Oliver is the administrator and parts manager and she also fronts the retail space. She grew up around motorcycles and is a seasoned competitive motorcyclist in her own right. Stu Lincoln is a motorbike mechanic known as the “Harley Davidson guru” according to Hadyn. Stu came from Palmerston North to join Hadyn at Evolved Performance and has done specialist Harley training in both New Zealand and Australia. “Once you ride a Harley, your mind is blown,” Stu says. “Their low-down torque, their power. It’s an addictive experience.” Stu also

DAVE CRAWFORD AND HIS TEAM BUILDING A BRAND NEW IRRIGATOR AT KAHUTARA, SOUTH WAIRARAPA.
Jason Romero, Troy Goodin and Matthew Chappell are part of a team at Cabernet Foods which produces great meat products from the paddock to the plate. Brothers Lyndon Everton (CEO) and Brian Everton (Commercial Manager) have run Cabernet Foods, with the associated Kintyre processing plant, for 20 years at Gladstone, east of Carterton.
It’s an expansive, yet tight-knit, operation which delivers its products everywhere, by a dedicated and talented team. Lyndon Everton is excited at seeing his employees grow in their roles and of the opportunities Cabernet Foods can offer. Troy Goodin is the Transport Manager. He keeps the operations running smoothly, co-ordinating the deliveries and ensures the fleet of refrigerated trucks are loaded on time, and that the drivers know their routes. It’s a huge undertaking getting to places like Hawke’s Bay, Bay of Plenty and Auckland. Troy has 17 years of truck driving experience, so he knows what it’s like to be out on the road. He has now also honed great co-ordination skills.
for quality control. Jason is working towards achieving New Zealand residency. Matthew Chappell has just been promoted to Livestock Supply Chain Co-ordinator. He is responsible for sourcing the animals, and each week, he is supplied with a list from the sales team for what stock he must find. Born and bred in Wairarapa, he instinctively knows the lay of the land and the farmers who are valued customers. He previously worked in the yards at Kintyre Meats and appreciates the importance of animal welfare. He began his new role in March 2021. The Everton family are proud of their operation which all harks back to their grandfather, Brian Everton snr. He was awarded a ballot farm in Foxton after WWI and ended up with several butcher shops across the Wellington region, as well as a personalised home delivery service.
Jason Romero is the Chiller Supervisor. He came from the Philippines to New Zealand on a skilled migrant visa and has learned many aspects of the company’s operation in the past five years.
Lyndon and Brian jnr pledge to provide quality meat products sourced from local farms where the animals have been raised in an environmental manner, by farmers who value using a locally operated processing service. The Cabernet name can be seen on many supermarket shelves and the Wairarapa company is holding its own in a market where major suppliers can often dominate.
With credentials and experience in IT, he was welcomed by Cabernet Foods and has provided sound tech support. He prepares the orders for distribution and is responsible
Lyndon and Brian like that they can employ local individuals and are able to offer a diverse range of jobs which provide great skills for everyone’s future.
Dave Crawford is in his element. He’s working in the farming industry he’s always enjoyed but in a totally different role to the share-milking he had done for decades. He’s a Sales and Project Manager for Bay Irrigation – a company which specialises in agricultural irrigation. Describing himself as a ‘hands-on salesperson’, Dave bought shares in the company early in 2021, cementing his confidence in the product he works with. He has also employed fitter/ welder Ian (Mitch) Mitchelmore to help him keep up with the workload. Bay Irrigation has its head office in Hastings where it began in the 1980s. It has formed relationships with farmers throughout New Zealand and irrigation machinery suppliers in Italy, France and the United States. Through these international connections, it imports and distributes high-tech irrigation equipment with a focus on mobile irrigators, including Zimmatic Centre Pivots. Pivot irrigators have taken off in Wairarapa, according to Dave. When Men@Work caught up with him, he was involved in the construction of three new irrigators on farms around Kahutara in South Wairarapa. The technology is now so advanced that each sprinkler on the pivots can be controlled individually, and wirelessly, ensuring water is only applied where it is needed, and most importantly, only in quantities needed. To make this innovation
It’s a great Kiwi ingenuity that has now gone around the world.” even more special, this system was invented in New Zealand by Manawatu men George Ricketts and Stuart Bradbury. The technology was purchased by the manufacturer of the Zimmatic pivots in the USA. “It’s great Kiwi ingenuity that has now gone around the world,” enthuses Dave. Dave loves his role working alongside the farmers to get the best outcome for their property. “The absolute best day at work is when the water is turned on. Carefully planned and managed irrigation can provide a 30 per cent increase in output from a farm.” Bay Irrigation provides a total service which men like Dave, implement direct to the customers. It’s not all high-end, large-scale irrigators either – there’s a wide range of smaller irrigators, pumps, generator sets, rain guns and booms. For all water management on the farm, Dave Crawford is the go-to man.

RICHARD FLEMING.
In 2016, Brett Wooffindin took the business leap and purchased into the accounting firm, Lawson Avery in Cole Street, Masterton. He is currently the co-director with Jennifer Martin. The pair set about looking at the long-established practice and decided the location, nestled beside the Wairarapa Times-Age, was a perfect site, but the 1970s building needed a re-vamp. With the staff heartily behind them, they have achieved streamlined and fresh new offices, which Brett says are a joy to work within. Brett is well-known and highly respected for his cloud-based accounting work especially using Xero which clients have eagerly adopted with enthusiasm. He says Xero provides a ‘no surprises’ approach to tasks such as GST, budgeting and forecasting, payroll, asset management and up-to-date reporting. He is especially proud of Lawson Avery’s long and successful history and enjoys being involved in succession planning and establishing confidence for future generations. Brett is also enthusiastic about helping clients know their own businesses and be comfortably familiar with their finances and accounting software packages, now a necessary part of accounting.
Lawson Avery has, as a result, introduced ‘walk in Wednesdays’ – one-to-one training sessions with their staff. It’s a free service for everyone, not just their clients, aimed at helping people feel computer and financially savvy. With new clients, the firm also offers a free set up and one-hour training session. “We want to educate people. We’ve seen how it helps those who have taken the time to learn.”
When Richard and Dana Fleming were setting up their Tararua Refrigeration business, they wanted a catchy logo which was colourful and would make people notice them. Enter the colourful half sun/ half snowflake logo which has certainly become a familiar icon. It reflects the young and playful nature of the company and of the Flemings, who thrive on being professional – from the smallest vehicle aircon job, to an entire fit-out of a house and its heating and ventilation system.
He studied at Lincoln University and graduated with a BCA majoring in Accounting and Business Management. He has worked in Wellington and London, before returning to New Zealand in 2011 and moving to Wairarapa in 2015.
The couple live in Masterton with their three children and have established a showroom for Tararua Refrigeration in Pahiatua, where they discovered there was a gap in the market – home heating/ air-conditioning and refrigeration systems whether that be servicing dairy farm units or building cooler and freezer rooms from scratch. That was two-and-a-half years ago, and the company now has four staff, including Richard, plus two people who do the administration, including Dana.
The other men of Lawson Avery, Rob, Boon and Rory join Brett. He, and his colleagues have young children so working in a familyfriendly environment is important to them all.
Tararua Refrigeration always has four vehicles on the road and their services are called for throughout Tararua and Wairarapa – from Norsewood to the Cape Palliser coast.
Brett hails from a farming background in South Canterbury, and this experience is proving to be of great benefit to the firm’s 60 per cent rural client base.

Paper Plus Masterton
WARRICK DELMONTE TRIES OUT ONE OF THE STORE COUCHES.
The ‘age of doing’ has dawned at Paper Plus When Warwick Delmonte, wife Sarah and children, decided to evacuate Auckland in 2017 and head to Wairarapa, little did they anticipate the roller-coaster ride they were in for. First there was the fresh dive into retail, then there has been the twists and turns the covid virus flung at them. Warwick comes from a highly creative background in advertising, where new ideas had to be regularly dredged up. “Client briefs, humour, ideas, short deadlines punctuate every day, but after a while, it gets exhausting.” Looking to escape the pressure cooker, he and Sarah purchased the Paper Plus store. To begin with, it all went swimmingly and Warwick was in awe of the highly experienced and longstanding staff he inherited. Then covid-19 arrived along with closed doors. A year or so later … the second major lockdown. But Warwick is amazed at how well the business is doing, convinced that much of it comes from a change in people’s head space. He believes people who would have been going overseas now spend locally. And look at the things shoppers are buying. Board games – think Ludo, Mousetrap, Battleship and Pick up Sticks! They’re all popular, so are jigsaws, journals, diaries, and the old-school photo albums. Art supplies are flying. And books, thousands of books … “Families are cocooning, nesting even, and they are reading books. Isn’t it fabulous?” Warwick and Sarah have thrived despite
covid, and ideas blossom in the eclectic store. Have you ever stopped and read the ‘profanity’ table?’ The Kids’ Club, run by Kalli Hooper, is enormously successful. Every three months she selects three books appropriate to the age, gender and interests of a child that has been signed up and they’re posted off to that child. Membership is exploding. Parents and grandparents love the ease of being able to give books as a regular gift. Then there’s the Grown Ups Book Club, the second Thursday of each month, run by Sue Reid. Numbers have doubled. Warwick sees it as a great form of community connectiveness. “We like to think of the store as a social magnet”. Couches and chairs dot the store. The staff want you to come and loiter. “We did so miss our customers during lockdown,” says Warwick. “Without them, the store is just a lonely stockroom!” Reflecting on the community appreciation is what helped keep Warwick going with such enthusiasm even during lockdown: “Dragging yourself out of bed six days a week at 5.30am to sort the post was not always the ‘funnest’ way to start the day, but sometimes … just sometimes it was indeed smile-worthy, like when I found a surprise waiting in Box 769. The team at Stihl Shop, had left a block of chocolate as a token of thanks.”

Did you know? Construction debts from $1,000 to $50,000 are now economic to pursue. Another smart service by Gibson Sheat Lawyers, RECOVERIT is a cost-effective method to recover your debts using tools available under the Construction Contracts Act 2002. Our team of specialist debt recovery lawyers, led by Finn Collins, has created the RECOVERIT process specifically for tradies to make it easy and cost-effective for you to recover outstanding debts. And the best part? We only get paid when you do! Our aim is to make debt recovery cost neutral, we don’t take a success fee or a percentage of what you recover. The only costs that you are responsible for are the filing fees and document service fees, which we’ll tell you up front, so you know what you’re up for. “I’ve worked in Construction law, in both the UK and in New Zealand, for many years. “Over that time, I’ve seen hundreds of cases where businesses in the construction trades are not getting paid money owed to them.
“When the Construction Contracts Act 2002 came into force in New Zealand, I spotted an opportunity to help construction trade businesses to get what is owed to them. “Using my construction law experience, and the measures available under that legislation, I set up a system that enables tradies to collect their debts in a very costeffective way… and RECOVERIT was born.” It’s as easy as 1 – 2 – 3! STEP 1: Prepare Make sure you’ve got your documentation right! Visit www.recoverit.nz to download templates that will streamline your payment claim processes and ensure that you get what you’re owed. STEP 2: Demand Once your payment claim expires, you can issue a letter of demand. Simply upload your documents at www.recoverit.nz and we can do the rest! Gleniti Romneys
Carterton Corrugated Iron and Flashings
MATT GRIFFITH, EMBRACES THE HANDS-ON WORK.
Old school techniques used Six generations in breeding in modern building designs prime Romney sheep FATHER AND SON, DAVID AND BILL HUME IN THE YARD AT GLENITI IN SOUTH WAIRARAPA.
In these uncertain times, Gleniti Romneys offer the certainty of robust easy-care sheep, with high fertility, high growth and survival rates, and good style medium wool. Gleniti has 1700 stud ewes, docking between 150-165% on the South Wairarapa farm at Pirinoa. Gleniti sells around 300 rams a year. The Hume family story in the Pirinoa district goes back to the 1850s when David Hume’s great-great-grandfather, Peter, bought the land on which Gleniti still farms. Story goes, he was a horse trader between Tasmania and Wellington, who secured a good sale and came to New Zealand buying the land in Wairarapa. “How lucky are we that he chose this area,” says David, who loves life on the land. David learned his farming skills from his father, Bill, who still likes to be involved at age 83. David is now sharing the workload and teaching his son, Jayden (18) – the sixth generation Hume. Most of what Bill learned about sheep is from the legendary Romney breeder and neighbour, the late Holmes Warren. Holmes, Bill, and nine other like-minded Wairarapa breeders formed the Wairarapa Romney Improvement Group in 1969. Since then, the group has been instrumental in improving the production of the breed. They have made beneficial use of recording
Working with freshly cut steel, a heavy ironrolling machine, and some ‘old school tools’ has given Matt Griffith a fresh focus. The pure hands-on work excites him.
How lucky we are that he chose this area.”

systems and have had advice from the best animal geneticists, including Prof Al Rae, Prof Dorian Garrick, and Dr Mark Young.
The Business was purchased and rebranded, and with Matt’s excellent talent and mechanical experience, continues to supply and produce excellent products.
After 50 years of careful recording, there is high accuracy in the breeding values that have been generated. Gleniti’s high stocking rate puts enough pressure on its sheep to identify those which do not thrive. David says mothering ability is particularly important. “Any ewe which doesn’t stand with her lambs, as we tag them, are culled. This practice has resulted in the sheep having a quieter temperament. “These breeding values are the basis of the index we have used for our selection that has identified the sheep with a balance of production traits, which gives them the best return to those using our rams,” says David. “In recent years, this balance of fertility, survival, growth rate and wool weight has brought the Gleniti flock close to optimum levels.” Good on you Hume family.
BALANCED TRAITS FOR THE BEST RETURNS FERTILITY - SURVIVAL - GROWTH RATE
With the construction boom in Wairarapa showing no signs of slowing, Matt’s skills continue to be in demand. He makes metal flashings for new houses and renovation (installed for weather protection), corrugated iron roofing sheets, and air ducts for factories, amongst anything else that’s needed, all from scratch – flat sheets of iron, that is. Matt is a mechanic by trade, and he moved toward the engineering sphere out of sheer fascination for what metal products can become, with a bit of imagination. Many of the purpose-built devices created by oldschool engineers from C&F Industries days, are still in the workshop, and they all have a special use, which Matt enjoys. “I enjoy watching metal transform and take shape,” he says. Martinborough born and raised, Matt was looking for a new challenge after years in the automotive industry. He was finding everything was becoming
I enjoy watching metal transform and take shape.” computerised and all about advanced technology you can plug in.
“Here, you get to work with machines that have a history. It takes you back to a time where we repaired everything by hand. I like that there’s not a computer in sight.” For flashings, Matt uses a range of materials- particularly galvanised iron, zinc or coloursteel. Flashings are shaped in a variety of ways and can be cut to any length. He particularly enjoys running corrugated iron: feeding sheets through a roll form machine, where they are compressed by a series of rollers increasing in pressure as they move along. Matt prides himself on his craftsmanship and accuracy, but also the speed at which he can fabricate sheet metal - providing clients with same-day service if requested. He enjoys meeting his new clients - a mix of builders, farmers, and home handymen. “A lot of our customers were with C&F since the early days. It’s cool to be able to carry on that history of Carterton.”

Blue Bucket Cleaning Company
Ticehurst Construction and Design
MAKING THE REGION CLEAN, OFTEN WHILE YOU SLEEP.
Two decades Wairarapa’s most trusted cleaning company Mark Johnston says eight out of ten people don’t like cleaning. Just where he gets this statistic from, is unclear, but as he’s in the business of cleaning, he does get a good insight into people’s wants and desires. Mark purchased the Wairarapa icon, Blue Bucket Cleaning Company, almost two years ago and has set about using his extensive customer service and staff training background to gather around him a highclass team of cleaners who now operate like a well-oiled machine. He began with 14 staff, now has 30, and has established a core group of five, who oversee the newer employees and help him manage the daily administration of the expanding business. He is especially proud of providing jobs for many who struggled to find work in the past. With a fleet of six vehicles, the team run a seven days per week service, with 85 per cent of the business being commercial premises. A coup for the company was winning the
Trinity Schools contract covering, Hadlow, St Matthew’s and Rathkeale Colleges. They also clean the mighty Webstar building and the Tararahi Agricultural Training Centre. It’s a highly complex and technical exercise to ensure there are cleaners in each location at the right time. Two per team, Mark has created sound job descriptions for his cleaners which comes with a ‘Toolbox’ of how to do their work, augmented with an incentive or reward system which pays a bonus when each of the criteria is achieved. The criteria includes customer satisfaction, equipment care and team approach. Mark thoroughly enjoys his new-found role encouraging others in work which often has been considered low grade. It’s certainly an essential service which when not done, is severely noticed! Consider this. Marks’ team each day: Scrubs 299 toilets, cleans 40 businesses, and between them all work over 100 hours. That’s a lot of cleaning to help people who maybe don’t like the task themselves.

Craig has been director of Ticehurst Construction and Design since 2015, along with partner Kerrie Sutton, after buying his parents’ Carterton-based company, Steve Ticehurst Building. Steve founded the business in the 1970s, with Craig coming on board as an apprentice in 1991. Nowadays, Craig leads his own team of carpenters, able to turn their hand to an array of competencies - new home builds, renovations, extensions, kitchen and bathroom design, decks, fencing and building inspections, to name a few. “We do everything from installing new hardware on a door, to building a new house from scratch,” he says. “People want to add their flair and individuality to their homes. Some clients do have ambitious plans and grand designs - it’s great when people shoot for the stars, and we can deliver on what they envisioned. It’s always satisfying to hear
customers say that was exactly what they wanted.” Craig says renovations have made up the bulk of his work but also undertaking more new builds. The current building boom, and buoyant housing market, means work keeps flowing, says Craig, waving his hand across the paperwork in his office which keeps him quite desk bound these days. He talks enthusiastically about the trade and the joy of using your hands to build. He has a supportive and highly qualified team however, all who have specialised skill sets. He calls on sub-contractors, if necessary, but likes to have a core group who know each other and work collegially. “It’s good to have your own team and be able to teach apprentices, instilling in them the standards you want them to meet, and to get everyone on the same page. “They’re a good, motivated bunch of guys,” says Craig. “Having the diverse range of work means our staff need to have more than just a basic set of skills and need to excel in a lot of different areas of the building trade. This they do well.

TOM MCCALLUM.
New wheels for cycling and social media star Tom McCallum is a talented cyclist, an elite New Zealand representative athlete, and a successful Youtuber. Now, at just 21, Tom can add business owner to his impressive list of credentials. The Masterton local opened Cycling Tom Bike Shop in August - having taken over the former Happy Valley Cycles. Owning his own bike shop is a dream job for Tom - a former member of the Cycling New Zealand junior development squad, and veteran of some of the country’s most gruelling road races. The store is named for his Youtube channel, CyclingTom: which started as a teenage hobby, and became an international sensation, amassing almost 16,000 subscribers and over 3 million views. At CyclingTom Bike Shop, he is excited to help others nurture their own passion for cycling. “I’ve spent a lot of time building my personal brand as a Youtuber - and it’s very cool to bring that into retail,” Tom says. “It’s so satisfying to see people discover how awesome cycling is. “It’s a great form of exercise, it’s low impact, you get to go outside and explore new places, and it’s fun. It’s easy to get behind as I love it so much.” Tom first fell in love with road cycling when he joined Athletics and Cycling Masterton at age 12.
Eventually, Tom earned a spot in both the Cycling New Zealand Under 15 and Under 17 teams, and competed in the Oceania Junior Tour in New Caledonia.
More recently, he competed in the New Zealand Cycle Classic and Tour of Southland. He started his Youtube channel while at Rathkeale College - starting out filming “random stuff around Masterton”. These days, his more slickly-produced content includes product reviews, tutorials on building and maintaining different bicycles, and vlogs from his cycling trips conquering the descent of the Korarau Road Climb at over 100kmh. Before opening Cycling Tom Bike Shop, Tom spent several weeks renovating and decorating the store - which now includes a coffee machine, 75-inch TV for cycle race coverage, and his custom bikes and framed New Zealand jersey on display. The shop is a treasure trove of bikes for all abilities: children’s bicycles and scooters, lightweight road bikes, BMXs, heavy duty mountain bikes, and the popular e-bikes. E-bikes, which have an electric pedal assist, can “open up a whole new world” for newbie cyclists, Tom says. “They’re great for people who haven’t been that confident on a bike, or for older people who’ve got back into cycling. If you’re struggling, you can just turn on the motor, and off you go.”

Straight Flush
KiwiSpan Wairarapa
L-R STEVIE, BRETT, JEREMY, CAMPBELL, MATT.
You’re in good hands with new plumbing service Jeremy and Ngaire Mansfield have a “big hairy audacious goal” for their business, Straight Flush: to have 50 sites around New Zealand within 10 years. And they’re off to a good start. Having run a successful operaon in Wellington for nearly 15 years, the couple opened Straight Flush Wairarapa late last year. In 12 short months, the new branch has already gained praise for its responsiveness, innovave soluons, and excellent customer service. Despite challenges posed by the recent lockdown, the business has experienced four consecuve quarters of growth, and has almost doubled its frontline team to keep up with the workload. “The ongoing support from the Wairarapa community has been humbling - and we are proud to provide an ever-increasing service in response to that,” Ngaire says. Ngaire and Jeremy, an experienced cerfied plumber, gasfier and drainlayer, founded Straight Flush Plumbing in 2007. At the me, the couple were living on Royal Street in Berhampore, so their first choice for a name was “Royal Flush”. However, they discovered the use of the word ‘Royal’ in company names is prohibited under New Zealand law - so went with the next best opon. “Straight Flush has stuck really well – people have called us for work because of the name.”
Wairarapa is served by plumbers (and brothers) Campbell and Mahew Bunny, plumber/gasfier Bre Czislowski and plumber/drainlayer Stevie Miller - who all offer a range of emergency and planned maintenance services. Straight Flush is one of the only companies in Wairarapa to use a specialist machine for blocked drains: which uses a tool to cut through tree roots, water blaster to flush away debris, and CCTV camera to locate the source of the problem. Addionally, Campbell operates a sucon truck to empty sepc tanks and grease traps. The team is already renowned for its efficiency, responding to emergencies either on the same day or within 24 hours, and friendly, personable service. Jeremy spends the majority of his week overseeing the trade team and pricing work in Wairarapa, while Ngaire is more involved with the overall group operaons. The couple are always looking for great staff, potenal sites and aspiring business owners to join the team. “We have clear pathways available for ambious individuals, evidenced by our partnership with a long-standing staff member in Wellington to launch his own branch.” The Wellington branch of Straight Flush now employs 18 staff who provide services throughout Wellington, Hu Valley and Porirua. A third branch will open in New Plymouth in early 2022.

HELL PIZZA MASTERTON Parry and his wife Nav have purchased Hell Pizza in Masterton and are excited about owning their own business – their life’s dream. They took over the popular pizza outlet at the beginning of 2021 and have thrived due to the inherited goodwill and successful systems that previous owner William Keedwell put in place. Parry did a lot of research before buying the business in early 2021 and found there was a lot more than just amazingly good pizzas made from quality ingredients at Hell Pizza. When getting takeaways rather than going to many different places to keep everyone happy you just need to go to one. The 96 Originals menu has the classics we all know, but with the option of designing your own pizza with up to 8 toppings – how good is that! With 8 choices in the Gourmet Pizza range, it is hard to choose one, but the Burger Pizza would satisfy the person who couldn’t decide

Joe’s Tyres
Wairarapa Eggs
THE TEAM AT JOE’S TYRES - JOE, MATT, TYRONE, HAYDEN, JOHNNY AND COLIN.
Providing tyres to keep Wairarapa rolling When midnight rolls around, most of Wairarapa is sleeping. Not so for the hardworking team at Joe’s Tyres. Midnight can be when their day is gearing up, helping stranded truckers, harvesters, and loggers get up on their wheels and back to work. Joe’s Tyres is owned by Colin and Milli Richardson and has been based on Villa Street in Masterton since 2014. Contrary to popular belief, no-one named Joe worked there until recently when Joe Phiri joined the team as a trainee fleet tyre technician. So, the name now fits! When setting up the shop, Colin wanted a “short, smart, snappy, memorable retail name”, and ‘Joe’ just seemed to fit the bill.
and everywhere. “We’ve been out at Cape Palliser, to the top of the Remutakas, on the Hutt expressway,” says Colin. “You could get a call from a farmer whose tractor tyres have blown in the middle of a field, in the middle of nowhere. We must be very adaptable. If one of our forestry clients has a puncture and can’t make their delivery, they can lose thousands of dollars in one day.” And it’s not only emergency call outs. Wise equipment operators get their machines maintained and Joe’s Tyres technicians do regular servicing of truck fleets, checking for punctures, foreign objects, and tread wear.
The team is kept busy with tyre repairs for a huge range of vehicles – from cars to utes, concrete mixers to logging trucks, and tractors with wheels over two metres high. They even maintain the odd wheelbarrow. Basically, anything with wheels.
Joe’s Tyres runs an efficient, personable, and affordable service and is rewarded with a loyal clientele and repeat business.
The Fleet manager is Hayden Bennett and technicians are Matt Vizor, Johnny Ripine, Tyrone Snell-Scasbrook and Joe Phiri. Colin loves the business.
With Spring arriving, things have picked up and agricultural clients are once again calling on this valued service, as noted by this happy customer:
“No two days are the same. You never know who is going to walk in the door or phone needing help.” Joe’s Tyres has contracts with many Wairarapa agricultural businesses. Around 85 percent of the business is commercial ie heavy trucks, agricultural vehicles, industrial loaders, forestry skidders, and farming vehicles. They cover the entire Wairarapa region from Ngawi to Eketahuna and, when dealing with commercial callouts, the technicians can expect to find themselves anywhere
During lockdown, it was deemed an essential service, and this kept the service ticking over.
“I want one tyre company to handle all my fleet needs and know I can leave it to them completely. For us to have machines stopped in the paddock costs a lot of money. Joe’s Tyres provides a great service, they react quickly when we need them, and their professionalism and skill is much appreciated.” - Rhys Scott – Scott’s Ag Contracting Carterton
CHRIS MARTIN AND FRIEND – THE HY LINE CHICKEN IS CHRIS’ PREFERRED BREED.
Wairarapa’s Egg Man – cracking a good pace in the free-range industry “An egg is such a great source of protein. It has proven heart-healthy unsaturated fats and a whole range of nutrients – why wouldn’t you want to add eggs to your diet?” It’s a question Chris Martin asks anyone and everyone in his daily work. From the plains of Chester Road in Wairarapa, Chris is on a roll selling his freerange eggs. He supplies many parts of the North Island, a new market in Singapore, and he’s just been appointed Chair of the Egg Producers’ Federation of New Zealand. Known locally as the ‘egg man’, Chris is gaining a sound reputation for offering top quality eggs from happy free-range chickens. Currently, there are 24,000 chickens, roaming 15 hectares, producing 7.5 million eggs a year.

part of helping on the new property.
There’s no scratching around in the grass looking for the eggs either. Chris has built large shelter tunnels where the chickens choose to roost.
It was not the first career path chosen by Chris. Born and bred in Masterton, he studied law but rapidly discovered it was not for him. “I’m here to drum the humanity out of you,” came from one lecturer, which had Chris running for the hills. Back in Masterton, he then worked as a baker when he learned of the poultry opportunity. He has grasped the egg business enthusiastically.
Under these roosting boxes are conveyor belts which gently take the eggs into the packing shed. Wairarapa Eggs employs 12 packers and drivers, and his three children all have a role to play. “I do the logistics,” says Chris, supported by his wife, Sunny.
Ever the innovator, he knew free-range was the only way to go and with sustainable packaging. His egg cartons are 50 per cent made of grass. He offers a range of carton sizes and the award-winning Chester Road range, celebrating the highest quality eggs. Farming sustainably resonates deeply with Chris. He has adopted the ‘Trace my Egg’ initiative, which lets buyers know exactly where the egg comes from and of the farm’s productive standards. “This is all about industry integrity – know the farmer, know the farm.” Check out Wairarapa Eggs social media pages - Facebook and Instagram ‘me_and_my_chickz’.
PROUD TO KEEP YOU ROLLING 24/7 Great tyres fit for your every need at affordable prices
This is all about my business integrity – know the farmer, know the farm.”
Sunny’s parents were Dutch immigrants who established a poultry farm in Upper Plain, Masterton. When Wim Stolte wanted to sell in 2011, Chris and Sunny decided they wanted to carry on the business. They chose new land on Chester Road, built a house, and went about establishing the free-range operation. The land was chosen for its stony, free draining soil, and for the windy conditions which help ventilate the tunnel houses. Happily, Wim is very much
A new project is the planting of pine nut trees which will be dual purpose. The trees will give the chickens shelter out on the land and the pine nuts will be a valuable byproduct. “I’ll work out how to harvest them when the time comes.” As well as now heading the national egg producers body, Chris is Chair of the Wairarapa Orchestra – he plays cello with his two sons – is a Deacon in the Masterton Reformed Church and a Trustee of Hokai tahi – the organisation which supports women and their whanau facing an unexpected pregnancy and those who have lost a child through death.

Core Legal
Shades Direct Wairarapa
CO-DIRECTORS SHANNON NORLING (LEFT) AND CHRISTIAN JORGENSEN.
JAKE MINTY (LEFT) WITH HIS TEAM ALLAN KURTZ AND CHRIS HAGGER.
The merger of two experienced legal minds
Experts in Covered Outdoor Living Areas
Lawyers Shannon Norling and Christian Jorgensen have teamed up as owners of Core Legal Limited (Core Legal) – unofficially the best small firm in New Zealand. Why the name Core Legal?
to Wairarapa in 2008 and took up the law once more in general practice. He’s wellknown for his cooking ability enjoyed by his wife, Kathryn, also a solicitor at Core Legal and their young children. Christian loves being a dad and enjoys the simple pleasures of country living. He’s also a talented drummer and has been involved adding the beat to several musical productions.
Jake Minty is not one to sit still. When catching up with him to chat about his latest venture, purchasing Shades Direct Wairarapa, Wellington and Manawatu divisions, he is flat out.
Shannon was raised and educated in Greytown and before studying law, he did a plastering/painting trade and ran his own business. He graduated from Waikato University and was admitted to the Bar in 2005. He honed strong ‘problem solving’ skills learned from owning his own business.
“They are such great products … they sell themselves … I’m so proud of the Kiwi owned company,” says Jake. Because they are all manufactured within New Zealand, supplies have not been a problem during covid, and he has been able to operate per normal.
He also enjoys martial arts, has a black belt in Okinawan Goju Ryu, and has travelled to Okinawa for extra training.
It’s just as well, as orders are flying in – especially now with summer coming and people’s desire to shelter from the hot sun.
“The team has experience in many areas of the law and wanted a firm name to depict an all-encompassing service – we have your core legal needs,” says Christian. He and Shannon have established offices up the impressive timber staircase which takes clients to the top floor of the iconic 1920s Masonic building on Chapel Street. Timber panelling and leadlights emanate the solidity of the practice they have achieved. The two men complement each other perfectly with their legal experience. Christian specialises in property law and subdivisions, including conveyancing, commercial leases, and refinancing. Shannon is an expert in relationship property including pre-nuptial agreements, separation agreements and disputes. With their team alongside them, Core Legal has a full complement of experienced advisers to assist clients to get the results needed in a friendly and constructive manner. “We focus on our clients and providing the best service we can,” adds Shannon. Christian started practising in 2003 in Wellington as an environmental lawyer before heading overseas where he worked as a chef. Returning to New Zealand, he moved

He spent a brief time in Australia and headed to a law firm in Masterton where he developed skills assisting clients with relationship property issues. Shannon has three children, aged 16, 14 and 10. Keen to own their own practice, Christian and Shannon have enjoyed collaborating with each other in getting Core Legal off the ground and they look forward to growing the firm. “We want to be at the forefront of law in our region - the leading edge. We have the talent and the drive and are here to help anyone who needs it.”

His engineering expertise gleaned both here and in Australia is coming to the fore with his latest venture, Shades Direct.
Jake and wife, Casey, decided they wanted to work together. They looked around for a business that suited their skill set and one they could genuinely get excited about. Shades Direct ticked all the boxes for them. Jake has an architectural/structural engineering background which means this business model was like second nature to him. Jake is involved with the hands-on installation of the products, quoting and the drawings while Casey has strong people and marketing skills.
Our awnings are custom built to suit individual spaces, Jake can build them based on engineering specifications signed off by two independent companies and with the company guarantee. The New Zealand quality stands strong throughout this business. Shades Direct offers residential and commercial aluminium awnings, screens for privacy or shelter, folding arm awnings, shade sails and in fact, anything you wish to cover or camouflage. They are custom built to suit unique situations. “Do it once and do it right,” is the motto he stands by. “New Zealanders are such outdoor people and love their homes, they want to enjoy outdoor living in any weather and conditions. Sun, rain or the gusty Wairarapa winds are great, but we need that element of protection” says Jake. He loves the products, made from construction grade aluminium. They come powder-coated to any colour of your choice. The awnings are 99% UV protected, the Outsider corrugated polycarbonate roofing comes with a hail guarantee or the 6mm thick Clear Span roofing is 150x stronger than tempered glass. “What’s not to like?” he enthuses.

Country Life Interiors
Loader Construction Engineering & Crane Hire Ltd
KEYTEN GIBSON.
Experienced Advice Matched with Quality Craftsmanship
CARL SCHDROSKI.
The name ‘Loader’ has been associated with steel fabrication and construction for decades in the Wellington region and there’s a new man at the helm. Keyten Gibson took over ownership of the company in August 2021 from Bruce Hargood and Keith Saywell.
Carl and Toni Schdroski’s interior design and upholstery business, Country Life Interiors, is well known and respected in Wairarapa and beyond. For the past three decades they have offered gorgeous couches, beautiful buffets, statement pieces and giftware, curtains, blinds and fabrics.
BEFORE
Keyten leads a 24-strong team of dedicated and experienced individuals from engineers, crane drivers to labourers, admin staff and four apprentices. Anywhere you see an expansive steel fabrication, chances are they have been made by Loader Construction. The company fabricates and installs steel work – earthquake strengthening being a speciality. Crane hire has been an additional service in recent years, as are customised quad bike safety frames, designed in 2011 by Bruce Hargood.
While these are showcased in their stunning store in the Kuripuni village, at the rear is a fully functioning workshop where Carl is busy doing upholstery and restoration work. Carl is well-versed in everything involved in furniture making - from the materials involved such as leather, vinyls or fabric, to knowing what is inside a piece of furniture (foam, springs, webbing etc). “To me it’s all about quality and how long and how well a piece will last. We have a throwaway society these days where people swap out their lounge suite every few years. We would rather help people choose highquality pieces that will last a long time and even be handed down through the family or choose the option to recover their existing piece (lounge chair, dining chairs, window squabs) to complement their decor.
Steel construction company has new owner
AFTER Having a workshop on site also means that customers can choose from the incredible fabric options and have matching pieces made for them. “Customers often come in to choose fabrics for curtains and then realise that we can also make them a matching headboard, cushions or an ottoman to suit.”
IN-HOUSE RE-UPHOLSTERY SERVICE
Keyten hails from Otago having been raised on a high-country farm near Tapanui. Educated at Waitaki Boys in Oamaru, he went on to do his heavy fabrication trade at the Hillside Railway Workshops in Dunedin. Several jobs in structural steel followed in Dunedin, Invercargill and Queenstown before he found himself in Christchurch a few months before the first of the two major earthquakes. Keyten was part of the search and rescue crews which scoured through debris on 22 February 2011. He was also involved in
the teams which had to cut open vehicles to free people. “They were scenes no one should ever have to witness,” he says looking back. His wife, Sonoko saw the cathedral collapse from her workplace in the central city. Keyten continued his work in Christchurch until 2018 when he and Sonoko decided to head north to Wellington. He was hankering to own his own business and when their son was born, they wished for a more rural lifestyle. They have enjoyed the move to Masterton and Keyten worked for Loader’s for some months before learning it was for sale and he jumped at the purchase chance. “I’ve well and truly hit the ground running,” says Keyten who points out orders are booked until the middle of 2022. “We always leave gaps for regular clients however, but it’s amazing how much building is going on.” Their latest project to complete is the large Hunting and Fishing building just erected on Ngaumutawa Road, opposite Solway School. Other recent projects are the new classrooms at Greytown School, a townhouse project in Petone, the new buildings at Pukaha Mt Bruce and the Mico building on Masterton’s Queen Street. The company has also been doing earthquake strengthening work on Carterton’s main street.

KEV RICKEY AND RYAN MONASTRA – TRANSFORMING LIVES.
Physical, mental and emotional wellness cared for here When Ryan Monastra and Kev Rickey joined businesses three years ago, a worldwide pandemic was not on the list of challenges they expected to encounter. They had, however, discussed ways to help people not only within their ‘bricks and mortar’ regular establishment, but also once they were outside it, even in potentially challenging situations. Ryan and Kev have been working in the wellness industry for decades. Ryan in his capacity as a physiotherapist with Back in Action and Kev, as a personal trainer. Between them and their teams, they have seen thousands of lives renewed and transformed with professional tailored input and support. They joined forces to make greater change and work more collaboratively from one location. The Back in Action and Hubb Health Club teams work together to see their clients and members thrive. In fact, The Hubb’s tagline is ‘Join, Belong, Thrive!’ and while they’ve created a welcoming space which delivers top notch personal training in a group environment, which is fun and strangely addictive, the pair wanted to help others also thrive. Enter the ‘Hubb Fit Kits.’
They have also developed a series of video tutorials that users get free access to when they buy a ‘fit kit.’ “It’s about creating a cheaper, end-to-end solution that gives people access to top level personal training with locals who know their stuff, and from the comfort of their own home, with a minimal investment necessary, and complete portability,” says Kev. The Hubb fit kits include a suspension trainer, a set of ‘booty’ (resistance) bands and sliding discs that clients can utilise alongside calisthenics (body weight exercises) to help keep them fit and healthy and build lean muscle. You can take it anywhere - all for just $150. The ongoing level restrictions are putting a strain on health businesses nationwide. The Hubb has had to limit attendance numbers in their group sessions, but members have been understanding and supportive throughout. “We have an amazing community in our members, the pandemic has only emphasised the importance of prioritising our heath to ensure that mental, physical and emotional wellness is in check.” Come and visit The Hubb, you’ll like what you see.

In the midst of a pandemic and nationwide housing shortage, and the cost of living continually rising, Steve says now is the time to be smart with your finances - especially for the important milestones.
Based at the Heritage Public Trust building in central Masterton, founder Steve Sale and his team aim to provide “a one-stop shop for financial advice”.
“It’s definitely become harder to afford your own property- so it’s important to get advice from a professional.
Steve, who boasts over 30 years’ experience in the insurance industry, is passionate about helping people make the best decisions with their money from securing an affordable home loan and comprehensive house insurance, to managing multiple debts, to building “a nest egg” for retirement. He is joined by fellow licensed financial advisors Neil Henderson, a veteran of the banking and lending sectors, and son Matt Sale - who has clearly inherited his Dad’s commercial acumen and ease with clients. Able to tap into a wide range of institutions - banks, credit unions, second tier lenders, and insurance providers - the team can help clients secure sustainable home loans and various insurance packages. They also advise on debt consolidation, personal and business loans, vehicle financing, term deposits, and KiwiSaver funds.
“We have the experience and knowledge to help you achieve your goals. Plus, we’re friendly, free of charge, and we can make ourselves available outside regular business hours.” Steve’s team looks after customers from all walks of life – from young house hunters, to high net-worth clients expanding their property portfolios. They can provide assistance with KiwiSaver withdrawal and Home Start Grant applications, as well as advice on addressing current debts before approaching lenders. “A lot of clients are, at first, unable to apply for a mortgage or afford a deposit. Some lenders have quite strict criteria. “But we can point them in the right direction and get a good savings scheme going so they can have success later down the track.” Steve and the crew are thankful to administrators Tania Sale and Hayley Denyer for their support.

Vein and Skin Clinic
Dr Poczwa and Dr Jarrod Newell – Family first at the Vein and Skin Clinic Striving for excellence and gold standard treatments at the Vein and Skin Clinic, one of New Zealand’s foremost vein treatment and appearance medicine clinics. Dr Henryk Poczwa and his son-in-law, Dr Jarrod Newell, are the men at Wellington’s Vein and Skin Clinic. They are the glue which holds this family-run business together. Wellington’s Vein and Skin Clinic has been in operation for the past 20 years, spearheaded by varicose vein specialist, Dr Poczwa and his wife Bernadette Poczwa, the head cosmetic nurse. It was Dr Poczwa who pioneered the modern approach of ‘Endovenous Laser Ablation’ for the treatment of varicose veins, a degenerate disease which previously required surgical stripping. This new, relatively pain-free treatment means patients are back at work, with no down time, literally walking in and out of the procedure. Fast forward the two decades, and this pioneering treatment is now the standard in the treatment of varicose veins around the world. Meanwhile, Dr Poczwa has established a loyal customer base at his Wellington clinic – Vein and Skin Clinic – which is the clinic of choice for many Wairarapa-ites. SLAB MEN AT WORK.
STEEN AND SENIOR WINDSCREEN TECHNICIAN EUAN HARRIS.
Busy windscreen service within workshop and on the road During his first decade in business, Steen McGhie’s company, Wairarapa Windscreens, became well-known in the automotive glass repair industry for their rapid availability and attention to detail. Steen and senior windscreen technician Euan Harris moved to a new location in Papawai Place two years ago. There’s been an expanding clientele and they are enjoying the busy commercial neighbourhood. While many of his customers use the mobile service, Steen and Euan carry out a lot of their work at the Papawai Place premises, which is also home to the Autogroom/Kooltintz team. Most importantly, Wairarapa Windscreens offers both an in-house and a mobile service – popular with the clients. Steen and Euan can repair stone chips and replace windscreens at a client’s regular mechanic’s workshop, saving time and petrol costs for them. It’s especially convenient, as the client can have their windscreen repaired, while their vehicle is being serviced or getting a warrant of fitness. Thanks to Steen and Euan’s precise handiwork, responsive service, and the magic of ‘word-of-mouth’ referrals, Wairarapa Windscreens has steadily grown its customer base – now stretching from Martinborough to Pahiatua. The extra business comes with a demanding workload, including an increase in heavy

They also stock a comprehensive range of windscreens and if they don’t have the correct windscreen, one can quickly be sourced, usually overnight, including glass for rare vehicles. They also help clients with insurance paperwork. And a bonus to both companies - Autogroom/Kooltintz clients are welcome to have any windscreen repairs done while having their vehicles groomed or windows tinted and vice versa. What’s not to like?
Your concrete foundation specialists Dan and Karen Reynolds of Tidy Slabs provide a complete foundation construction service. The couple moved to Wellington last year from Mackay in central Queensland where they both worked in the construction industry - Dan as a trade qualified carpenter and site supervisor and Karen as a project manager. Dan and Karen regularly visited Wairarapa, and liked it so much that they moved to Carterton, and in February this year opened a Tidy Slabs branch at Waingawa where Karen is the Regional Manager and Dan the Slab Manager. Laying the foundation is a critical part of every building project, and is often considered to be the hardest part of a build. Tidy Slabs has a well-defined process that maintains a high standard for every project. This includes the initial peg-out and ground prep, aggregate placement, boxing and polystyrene pod installation, organising the tradespeople, facilitating council and engineer inspections and overseeing the concrete pour. Dan and Karen’s clients include group home builders, commercial builders, small builders and home owners. Dan and Karen are very passionate about training their employees. They focus on training and upskilling right from day dot. Anthony Reiri, Jason Clark, Gareth Ford, Tane Matiaha and Baillie Whyte are all Certificate 3 Foundation Construction apprentices.

“We are really passionate about being an industry leader, and making sure we conduct our business in a professional way,” says Dan. “We have systems in place to make things easy for our clients and to deliver consistent high quality.” Dan and Karen place a strong value on partnerships with their clients, as well as their suppliers, who at a national level include Allied Concrete, Rhino Concrete Services, United and EXPOL. Tidy Slabs also works closely with countless local businesses from earthworks and timber suppliers through to vehicle maintenance and concrete cutting. One of the things Dan and Karen like most about Wairarapa is its people and they are pleased they have been able to open a branch of Tidy Slabs here, where previously all work was done by the Wellington branch.

The show must go on at Carterton Events Centre
EVEN DURING THE PANDEMIC LOCKDOWNS, THE CARTERTON EVENTS CENTRE TEAM KEEPS GOING. SIMON RAYNER (LEFT) CHECKS THE AUDITORIUM LIGHTING. JOE SAMUEL FOOTS THE LADDER FOR BRETT STRINGER. REAGAN GUNDERSEN (RIGHT) CAPTURES THE OCCASION.
Dave Sims, the long-me Venue Coordinator at Carterton Events Centre, said the past 10 years have been excing for the team. For a decade, the team at Carterton Events Centre have been ensuring the show must go on. The Centre’s maiden event was in October 2011. Since then, it has provided a vast range of entertainment, social services, and events. Its versality has been underlined as the challenges of covid-19 was faced. In October 2021, the Centre hosted vaccinaons for Carterton District Council [CDC] team members. Geoff Hamilton, CDC chief execuve, said the Event Centre and its team are a huge asset for the community. “Geng large scale civic projects delivered is always challenging. With foresight, previous Councillors incorporated both the Youth [Rangatahi] Centre and the library into the building design. That has been of enormous benefit to our community.” The Centre has been pivotal for Carterton.
It’s a space for people to come together, celebrate, and remember. Friday 29 October marked 10 years since it was officially opened. Since the first curtain call, the Centre has grown in popularity, with locals, and touring companies. One of the Centre’s strengths is its team. Behind it all is a team of dedicated staff who go the extra mile to ensure a world-class experience for visitors, be they world famous stars of stage and screen, or the most passionate bookworm vising the library each week. Dave Sims has led the team since doors opened, as Venue Coordinator, leaving just a few weeks short of the 10th anniversary. He said the past decade has been an excing me for the Events Centre and Council staff. “Everyone has pitched in to help. There were new experiences for everyone, and we discovered very quickly how much it was needed in the community. It exceeded expectaons from the start and many of the doubters soon came in to say they’d been wrong about the project.” Greg Lang, Mayor of Carterton, said the Events Centre provides the crucial funcon as a venue and library, and also offers so much more. “We value its versality. You cannot underesmate the part it plays in tough mes. Behind it all is a team that keeps things going, and geng things done - with teamwork, dedicaon, pride in their work, and a customer focus.”

Jacobson’s Kitchens & Cabinetry
Joinery business with local history celebrating all things wooden A state-of-the-art kitchen, a quirky set of shelving, perhaps a staircase, a solid wood entrance door, European-style windows, or a piece of wooden furniture? These are some of the many items Vic Jacobson and his Joinery team get asked for, relishing the challenge to create bespoke mber items. From the smallest coffee table to a huge recepon desk for a Queenstown bar – they are up to the challenge using the latest CAD/ CAM soware. Jacobson Joinery Services is the creaon of a merger of two companies – Jacobson’s Kitchens and Cabinetry and The Renall Door Company. Vic Jacobson is the Director at the helm in a hands-on role which comes from decades of experience in the building industry. He has a brother, Bruce, the other Director, based out of Auckland. A third brother, Graham, sadly died in 2020, leaving Vic to lead the way in the Brooklyn Road, Carterton factory. Graham Jacobson had started his joinery company in Marnborough in the mid-1990s and was producing quality kitchens and cabinetry. Graham relished the opportunity of working with his brother, but it was not to be, and Vic ended up making Graham’s coffin. Yes, the company makes everything in wood. Vic Jacobson had been in various roles with The Renall Door Company for over 30 years. When computerised machinery was entering the industry, he spent me sourcing state-ofthe-art machinery and receiving training in countries like Germany, where the massive Conturex C124 comes from. It sits pride of place in the busy joinery factory and is a pivotal part of the operaon. Vic is a qualified builder and ran his own company for several years before becoming a central cog in the Renall business. He could see the way the industry was going with computers and his soware knowledge was highly valuable. An interesng trend in the joinery world is the resurgence of wooden windows. Fieen years ago, aluminium was all the rage, it has now dropped to only around fieen per cent of the market in UK, says Vic. The Joinery business has 21 staff at the Carterton base including Graham’s son, Trent, and Vic’s son, Hunter, doing their apprenceships. Vic is keen to see the young learn the trade and with five young apprences (two of whom are also doing extra-mural business papers), the company’s efforts have been rewarded in being finalists in the Wairarapa Business Awards, Youth 2 Work category.

Thanks to the very loyal support of its customers, this business is on a sound footing operating from comfortable new premises, with a recent addition to the team. Their success is equally the result of generous help of experts in the banks and wider network.
As Charles expresses it “working in this field you learn that you do not know everything! You realise the bank loan assessors are very focused, knowledgeable, and intuitive – experts in their niche areas. With their assistance you can do complex deals successfully”. “Assistance from legal execs, valuers, estate agents, accountants and bank branch staff has also been of the essence in keeping deals on track without losing momentum. We record sincere thanks to all customers and members of our network for this generous support.” “The other important driver of our success is the late nights doing the homework. One hour customer-facing time is followed by about 10 hours of homework!” Phillip has recently relocated with his family from Auckland to join the business. His wife Anne from New Caledonia is an early childhood teacher at Blue School in Greytown. They have one child of two years who is living the dream attending He Pounamu early nurture. Southey’s Auto World Ltd
PlyGuy
LEFT DION SOUTHEY AND BRENDON SOUTHEY.
Four decades of quality service, brand loyalty and reliable wheels Since Roger Southey founded his Masterton-based car dealership in 1977, there’s been many changes in automotive technology.
At Southey’s Auto World, co-directors Brendon and Dion Southey have seen some groundbreaking innovations like adaptive cruise control, Apple car play/ Android auto, self park and electric vehicles, just to name a few. Their products may look different to 45 years ago - but the Southey’s team can always count on customer loyalty, thanks to its veteran staff, quality service and universally beloved brands. Southey’s Auto World, Wairarapa’s premier dealer for Honda and Nissan, is a family affair - with Roger’s sons Brendon and Dion playing an active role in the business for over 30 years. The dealership has moved into its second generation of family ownership, with the Southey brothers taking over from their Dad in April. And the “family feel” isn’t limited to the Southey clan - as Brendon says they often serve several generations of customers. “Someone will come and buy their first car - and we served their parents 20 years before,” he says. “People are very loyal to our brands.
Honda and Nissan have always had strong customer retention - they’re reliable, longlasting, well-made vehicles. “Better yet, our clients are loyal to us it’s great to see them coming back and upgrading to newer models, and hearing they’ve recommended us to their friends.” Like their favourite wheels, Southey’s clients are varied: from farmers and tradies searching for a hard-working ute, to young drivers intrigued by Honda’s history in Formula 1. Southey’s has recently expanded its stock of electric and hybrid vehicles - proving particularly popular are the all-electric Nissan Leaf and the Honda Jazz hybrid. “The Jazz is small and compact, and easier to manoeuvre - but also roomy inside. “The hybrids have great fuel economy, and can go for a good 1400km on a full tank. They’re self-generating and don’t need to be plugged into a charger. “There are many other hybrid models in the pipeline, which is exciting.” Brendon and Dion employ a team of 10, including service technicians, parts specialists and a car groomer/yardsman. And the team continues to expand, with new technician and parts/service coordinator positions now available.

PLYGUY, MATT MCQUAID.
Celebrating the versatility of plywood A year on from when he bought the timber business, PlyGuy, Matt McQuaid happily reports plywood sales have gone through the roof. The booming building industry and covid lockdowns, giving people time at home, has helped. “Everyone appears to be into ‘do-it-yourself’ projects and the versatility of ply has been realised. We are working hard to keep up with demand, and offer alternatives, if their preferred choice isn’t available.” Matt brings to the business a highly disciplined, efficient approach gleaned from years in the navy. He grew up on the Kapiti Coast and joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as a Seamanship officer, spending almost 16 years serving on 11 different ships and in a variety of shore-based roles. He was involved in peacekeeping work in Korea and served on the helicopter assault carrier, HMS OCEAN, and was deployed to the Middle East. He left the navy in August 2020. Three months later, he purchased PlyGuy. It’s a small tight team of himself, Hannah Kennish, yard manager, and Steve Croft, yard hand.
• Plywood • Tussock Board • Rough sawn timber • Laminated Veneer Lumber
Both Matt and Hannah are members of the Martinborough Volunteer Fire Brigade. PlyGuy is situated on the high-profile site on State Highway 2 at Clareville. The venture has been a challenge that Matt is relishing. He and his Irish-born wife, Donna, chose Martinborough to settle in and raise a family, and they set about looking for a business. Matt came across PlyGuy for sale, and it appealed. He likes the variety of highly versatile products which the regular timber merchants don’t stock. He has customers wanting to build anything from a tiny home to a kid’s bike ramp or playhouse, to a dog kennel or chicken coop. Depending on the grade chosen (and there are many), the plywood sheets can be used for anything from wall lining and flooring, to wind bracing, packaging and boxes, furniture, and fencing. Because of that versatility, Matt’s customer base is diverse, from builder and construction companies to farmers and DIYers. Matt sources 85-90% of his ply from within New Zealand and the small amount he gets imported, is certified sustainable.

Brooks Refrigeration Services
SHANE, ADAM AND TAPANGA.
Temperature Controlled BETTER! Adam Brooks and his team at Brooks Refrigeration have a lot to be happy about. The business Adam established four years ago is going nicely, and he is joined by two apprentices training to be refrigeration engineers. Altogether, Adam had worked in the industry for over 20 years and having his own business has been the ultimate ambition. Tapanga Brooks, Adam’s daughter, was the first apprentice, and this year they have been joined by Shane Hunt, keen to take a new direction in his career after 15 years in viticulture. Shane is mechanically minded and appreciates the importance for refrigeration in the wine industry. Despite the ups and down which covid has thrown at everyone, there’s an increasing demand for their services. Heat pumps and air conditioning units, heat transfer kits, and automotive aircon are a big part of their work, all needing regular maintenance and cleaning, if they are to work efficiently. When it comes to installing air con units, Adam likes to be aware of clients’ budget
and home layout and works alongside them to ensure the correct size is installed for upmost efficiency. On the farm, the mobile chiller trailer, unique to Brooks Refrigeration, comes into play often when refrigeration facilities break down, or need servicing. Cafes and restaurant fridges and freezer units often need attention too, and the chiller trailer can be a lifesaver. This purpose-built trailer is also available for hire. Adam is a specialist in repairing all automotive air conditioning systems. Cars, trucks, tractors, and earthmoving equipment all at some time, need re-gassing and repair.

Newbolds Masterton
100% LOCAL LADS, L-R, ANTHONY, DANE, MARK, JAMES, NATHAN, JACOB, DJ AND BEN.
100% committed to evolving, positive relationships and community The team at 100% Newbolds Masterton have met the challenges of operating in a global pandemic head on - and are busier than ever thanks to the support of the community. Owner Mark Heginbotham says operating during covid has been challenging but has meant his team have had to adapt, trade smarter and continually improve their systems. “Pre-covid we could sell, order, deliver and install an appliance within a week. Now, stock is harder to obtain but we have managed to navigate this with minimal interruption and thanks to great understanding from our customers.” Even in the midst of covid-19, Newbolds has continued to thrive - with loyal customers making the store their first choice for everything from whiteware, to 4K TVs, to espresso coffee machines and the newly popular air fryers.
“We have been very grateful to experience the support of the local community during the pandemic, which we do not take lightly. “Customers deserve to shop where they get the best experience and expertise which is why we focus on offering strong knowledge of products, an inviting shopping environment and competitive pricing.” For Mark and his leadership team, an “inviting shopping environment” includes adopting a progressive and tech-savvy workplace, while also staying true to its small community roots. Retail manager James Pringle attributes Newbolds’ success to investment in its staff: both in its commitment to training and fostering a positive workplace culture. “People come to Newbolds because they know they’ll get great advice - from people who are passionate about our products and genuinely passionate about what they do.
We have a great team environment here – we love to laugh, but we also strive for excellence and to do a good job.” “We have a great team environment here - we love to laugh, but we also strive for excellence and to do a good job.” Newbolds Masterton has steadily grown over the past year, now employing more than 20 staff across two locations: its Queen Street showroom and service yard on Worksop Road.
It has also expanded its offering with beds from New Zealand’s biggest bed manufacturer - Comfort Group. The service centre specialises in the service and repairs for the majority of the store’s brands helping extend the products’ life cycles, and adds value to customer service. “Anyone can sell you a TV - but we can help if it breaks down,” James says. We believe in going the extra mile for our customers.” The Newbolds team are particularly passionate about supporting the community, and provide sponsorships for several charities, clubs and events. These include the paddle boats at Queen Elizabeth Park, Camp Quality, Makoura College’s community pantry, Greytown Rugby, Bride of the Year, and the recent bodybuilding competition held by Wai Weight at Wairarapa College

GREG, ALEX, STEW, RUA, ANTHONY, KAWITI, HARRY, COLIN, ABSENT: ROYDON.
A growing business and local experts in customised steel buildings Now in their fifth year as owners of Totalspan Wairarapa, Stew and Rebecca Clark have seen the business grow every year, to the point where they now employ their own team of builders alongside their office staff. Stew, who is Wairarapa born and bred, oversees all the building projects. Stew is a qualified carpenter and Licensed Building Practitioner with 18 years’ experience in the building industry, including the management of commercial and residential projects. A primary teacher in the UK, Rebecca met Stew when she came to New Zealand 14 years ago, and they now have two young daughters who keep their parents very busy! Rebecca manages the office in Ngaumutawa Road alongside Sales Consultant Linda Reed and Administration Assistant Jannine Atkinson. Greg Richardson joined Totalspan Wairarapa as its Project and Contract Manager earlier this year and has brought knowledge and cohesion to the team. A qualified civil engineer, Greg has extensive previous experience in the building industry. Stew’s dad Alex Clark continues to liaise with councils on Building Consents. With the business continuing to grow, Stew and Rebecca took the plunge last year to employ their own team of builders, one of whom is an experienced Totalspan builder who relocated to Wairarapa from another region. Stew reflects that having their own building team has had a positive effect in providing valuable continuity and reliability to the construction side of the business.
We’ve been in business for almost five years and grown with it. We’ve risen to the challenge and, with a great team around us, we are stronger than we’ve ever been!” Totalspan Wairarapa continues to use subcontractors for excavation and concrete foundation work. While the business has grown significantly, Totalspan Wairarapa remains a close knit team, says Stew. “We’ve been in business for almost five years and grown with it. We’ve risen to the challenge and, with a great team around us, we are stronger than we’ve ever been!” While the construction industry nationwide is experiencing many challenges resulting from a covid-affected world, Stew says Totalspan Wairarapa is managing well. “We are continuing to work very hard in a demanding and challenging environment to retain consistency and dependability for our clients.” So, if you’ve a residential, lifestyle, rural or commercial building in mind, call in and meet your friendly Totalspan Wairarapa team at 235 Ngaumutawa Road, Masterton.

Enable Design
Presenting well and smart – an art form in the making Blair Rooney and his team at Enable Design are a notable example of starng small, creang a great service with innovave ideas, and pow – people are scrambling to get a look in! “I was assured from the start,” says Blair. “Business confidence in Wairarapa is high and people are wanng to present professionally.” Just a year ago, Blair and wife Beth were operang their company from a couple of laptops, and a roving office around Wairarapa, which saw them vising clients who wanted to up their image or simply create a new website. They stress to clients there are three phases of branding – design, digital and markeng. We help them work their way through all this, adhering to the principal of keeping it SIMPLE. “How a company or product presents itself is so important to its success. We’ve produced great branding ideas which have captured the imaginaons of clients who have willingly run with our ideas. We are most appreciave of those people who let their minds run free, as it lets our creave juices flow, and it allows us to produce great ideas. Keen to create branding which both clients and their customers love, Blair makes them instantly recognisable and memorable at a glance. “Clever branding is successful if we can go about our daily life not realising that we recognise things by their logo, colour, signage shape, without mentally absorbing words or bringing it to aenon,” explains Blair. The more subtle, the more effecve it is.” Blair has established an office in the Umbrella Group building on Masterton’s Chapel Street by the Renall Street roundabout. It’s sleek black and white interior with display screens featured on the walls, shows the team is serious. Blair has been joined by Connor Duncan, who comes from a print background. He’s responsible for the business development of Enable Design. Blair has done this unl now, as well as doing the idea brainstorming. Recently he and Beth have become parents and so wish a bit more family me. With them is Fernanda Arias, a senior designer, who hails from Mexico and has made Wairarapa home. There’s lots of Blair’s ideas around Wairarapa and beyond. Early creaons were within Homegrown Butchery at Kuripuni Village featuring the large, stencilled bull on the wall. He’s also worked with Mrs Blackwell’s Village bookshop, the bicycle store, and Saunder’s Shoes in Greytown. E-commerce websites are ever popular with more people shopping on-line. “These avenues must have ulmate ease of operaon, as well as looking appealing. They also offer another revenue stream within the exisng business.” says Blair, all stuff he’s good at doing.

How a company or product presents itself is so important to its success.” Blair was born in Palmerston North and raised in Wellington where he met Beth. They had spent two years in the same classroom at primary school and eventually met up again and married in 2018. Entrepreneurial from an early age, at 16, Blair created his first company in the apparel industry. Further jobs were in the print and media industry and had a couple of snts in Melbourne. In 2017, it was a leap of faith leaving a ‘comfortable’ creave job as a business development manager to set up on his own. Blair has enjoyed helping companies to create their vision and is connuing to seek such opportunies in Wairarapa.

A1homes
L-R – Paul Southey, Tim Fenwick, Anthony Murray, Paul Marlow
Building homes for Wairarapa people for over 16 years For the team at A1homes Wairarapa it’s people – their needs and their stories, that drive them to create beautiful homes for their clients to live in. According to Paul Southey, owner of A1homes Wairarapa, “I could not operate my business without our wonderful diverse staff and our awesome team of contractors and suppliers. Simple really – it’s all about the people” A1homes branches are individually owned and operated throughout New Zealand and offer all kinds of designs ranging from 60sqm to 250sqms. How you wish to approach your build can vary too. You can either get A1 to co-ordinate and build your home, or A1 will supply the materials and you can co-ordinate the build using the kitset option. A1homes is passionate about strong networks, both in business and in the community. This is reflected in the experienced team working in the local residential housing business. The men behind A1homes Wairarapa: Paul Southey Paul and his wife Jeanette established the Wairarapa branch of A1homes in 2005. Raised in South Wairarapa, they met as students at Kuranui College. Further education, marriage and children followed, and the pair began dabbling in buying kitset homes from the then Wellington based A1homes. They quickly saw great potential in Wairarapa and when offered the
Wairarapa franchise, they eagerly purchased it. They have never regretted their decision. The burgeoning interest in Wairarapa has taken the local building industry by storm. Paul estimates A1’s clients are 50 per cent from within Wairarapa and the other half from outside - mainly Wellington. These days Paul has stepped back from the day-to-day running of the business - handing the reins to Tim Fenwick, however he remains immersed in the construction industry via Master Builders, development interests and a passion to support local. His teaching and mentoring skills come in handy too. Being of Ngāti Kahungunu descent, Paul is especially keen to encourage Māori and Pasifika into the building trade and even into owning their own business. He proudly reels off a few names of local businesses who are now working in the construction industry. Paul regularly speaks to senior school students heralding the value of learning a trade. He is particularly proud in the growth of women in the industry. Paul heads the Wairarapa Māori Business Network sharing “I’ve always been about life-long learning, striving to better ourselves and supporting each other. If this type of network had been around when Jeanette and I were starting out, it would have been hugely helpful.”
Tim Fenwick Tim is A1 Wairarapa’s General Manager. Tim’s been with A1 for over four years and oversees the day-to-day running of the busy company. Good communication and relationshipbuilding are keys to a successful business, Tim believes. “Every person has different wants, needs, budgets and life-stages. It’s so important we listen to this.” Tim adds that the nature of his work has become more complicated since Covid-19 and the shortages in tradespeople and supplies are starting to bite. He estimates A1 has doubled its workload in the past year and it’s a juggling act to satisfy clients, contractors, and suppliers in the current climate. Born and raised in Greytown, Tim qualified as a carpenter with Holmes Construction before heading overseas in 1999. Returning to Greytown from Melbourne with wife, Erin and two sons, he was thrilled to land the role with A1 where his construction and management background has come together and been a huge asset to the tight-knit team. Paul Marlow Paul has been with A1homes for 16 years with franchises in different parts of New Zealand. Originally, starting at A1homes Waikanae and then moving to A1’s Head Office in Tauranga to reestablish the franchise there.
Paul has known Paul Southey for twenty odd years and has been working with the team at the Wairarapa branch of A1 for the past six years. Paul is part of the sales team, and he specialises in helping clients develop plans as well as supporting the team with his strong industry knowledge and solutions. Paul believes that what makes A1homes stand out in the home building trade is its care of people and he has always been impressed with how important this is to the company. Anthony Murray Anthony is the newest team member and will officially start with A1 in early November. Anthony along with his wife Casey and three young daughters moved to Wairarapa from Auckland in early 2020 seeking a more familyfocussed way of life. As a qualified boat builder, Anthony has spent many years on the tools and the move to Masterton presented an opportunity for a career change into residential and commercial construction. He is not far off completing a Bachelor of Construction majoring in Construction Economics – knowledge that will be a fantastic addition to the business. Anthony adds “What attracted me to A1 was the tight knit team and family orientated business that has a commitment to developing strong processes and systems so as to deliver the best value to our customers”.

McKenzie’s Electrical 2000
Lighting up Wairarapa with talent, innovation, and plenty of heart Masterful craftsmanship, forwardthinking technologies, a progressive and caring workplace, with plenty of career opportunities - after more than two decades, Carterton’s McKenzie’s Electrical 2000 is still one of Wairarapa’s most successful trade services. Russell and Carrollyn Keys bought the business in October 2000, starting out as a small operation with two registered electricians and an apprentice. Nowadays, McKenzie’s steadily expanding crew is in hot demand, providing electrical solutions for some of the region’s biggest commercial and industrial premises (supermarkets, factories, construction companies, and many more), as well as domestic homeowners. The McKenzies’ team has grown to comprise 10 talented sparkies (including five apprentices) - proficient in everything from wiring hot points and fitting security cameras, to installing solar panels, to operating new technologies to help prevent electrical malfunctions. Russell and Carrollyn attribute the company’s success not only to the quality of its service, but to its supportive and equitable workplace culture – which includes flexible hours to accommodate family commitments, paying the Living Wage for apprentices, and involving the whole team in decision-making. For example, when hiring a new team member, that person is interviewed by all the current team - and a consensus must be reached that they will be a good fit. When Men@Work interviewed the McKenzie’s team, it was clear they’re a tightknit bunch - sharing plenty of inside jokes, hilarious nicknames, and affectionate ribbing. “It’s a great team here - loads of good banter,” qualified electrician Dillan Wyse says. “We all look out for each other. People are always willing to help - whether it’s workrelated or not, we can always give each other a call. “McKenzie’s is a fantastic company to work for – extremely supportive and familyorientated.” The Keys are particularly passionate about electrical apprenticeships - both to keep the trade alive and provide career opportunities for young people.
We all look out for each other. People are always willing to help – whether it’s work-related or not, we can always give each other a call.
While most of McKenzie’s apprentices are straight out of secondary school, Matt Noble has come to the trade later in life, having previously worked in retail.
MCKENZIE’S ELECTRICAL TEAM.
Matt is now working towards his electrician’s qualification through The Skills Organisation. “I decided it was time to do something much more interesting with my life - where I could use my brain and move my body,” Matt says. “Working at McKenzie’s has been a great choice. We all do a bit of everything on the job - so there’s always a new skill to learn.” Ben Pike and Takarangi Williams are in their final year of training, and are a great support to new apprentices Matt, Max Collett and Abby Hammersley. Ben Doyle, who also trained as an electrician later in life, is a new addition to the team and has also been instrumental in training and mentoring the apprentices. Matt Howard has recently qualified as a registered electrician and is fast becoming the team’s “data whizz”. The McKenzie’s team is similarly passionate about new innovations - which saw them bring Keith Nielsen on board to assist with modern security solutions. Thermal imaging has also become an integral part of McKenzie’s services, with Dillan qualifying as a registered thermographer. At present, the construction boom in Wairarapa is keeping the team busy with plenty of new home builds and electrical domestic alterations. “During covid, no one’s going on holiday - so they’re building and renovating instead,” Dillan laughs.

Wairarapa Shelter Trimming
Cable Guy Wairarapa
(GRANDFATHER) JOHN BULL WITH BRAIDEN, NATHAN AND THEIR FATHER DAVE RYAN.
Three generations of service to Wairarapa Brothers Braiden and Nathan Ryan are adding a new spin to the family business that their father, Dave, started 30 years ago. The company has grown significantly throughout the years, beginning as Weed Warriors Ltd and now operating as Wairarapa Shelter Trimming. Whichever way you call it, they’ve been responsible for much of the maintenance, topping, clearing and removal of trees and shelterbelts in the region for decades. Their equipment has come a long way in that time too, and the brothers have just picked up the second of their two new machines – a JCB 110W hydra-dig with a steel twist making it extremely versatile. It has many attachments including a tree shear, capable of cutting off trees at heights of up to eight metres and with diameters of 300mm with ease. This unique machine holds and cuts the trees, gently lowering and stacking them into a tidy pile, being able to then attach a bucket to dig out the stump and sculpt the soil. “It’s basically a start-to-finish property development all-inone machine”, says Nathan, excited about the new piece of kit. Braiden believes this new machine gives them a competitive advantage as it can travel at 40kmh on wheels rather than tracks, leaving little trace on the sites they are working on.
“In addition, it can be driven to the site rather than relying on a transporter, which incurs additional transport costs for the customer.” Dave Ryan has always been exceptional at research and development and tends to find himself ahead of the curve when it comes to the industry. Their new machines are no different. The family is proud of the service that they provide which includes, hedge trimming, tree topping, and removal, as well as any earthworks required. This has piqued the interest of developers looking to build subdivisions. With the introduction of manuka and pine forests, flail mulchers work brilliantly in keeping down scrub and gorse on tracks while also being able to carry spare attachments, allowing them to fix tracks, clear slips, and water tables while there. In 1973 John Bull began it all, and in the mid-90s son-in-law, Dave, followed suit in an attempt to make some extra money during a particularly rough season dairy farming in Dalefield. He attracted council and state highway work along with private landowners who have also valued his services over the years. Son, Braiden says he was just 11 when he began working with his dad in summer holidays. Fifteen years later he still loves the industry and is proud to have his brother on board carrying on a family tradition.

SEAN NYBOER HOLDING AERIAL & INTERNET CABLING TO GO BEHIND A WALL MOUNTED TV.
Making home communication and TV reception simple Sean Nyboer is the ‘go to man’ in Wairarapa, if your television screen goes blank, you can’t figure out which plug goes where, your TV won’t programme into the myriad of channels available, if your TV internet Apps aren’t working, if you need a satellite or aerial, or a new TV outlet installed - or it’s just all too hard! He’s an aerial and satellite dish technician who makes what seems a minefield to most, an easy task and makes TV reception work smoothly. Sean enjoys troubleshooting too, sorting out any problems or issues with TV reception, and he likes to go that extra mile with mounting screens on walls and ensuring cables are tidied away. He brings 15 years of experience to each job, assisted in administration by Caroline Nyboer. A lot of the work isn’t just fixing problems either but installing the communications systems in houses, including home theatre systems. Sean recommends contacting him first when a house is being built to ensure the correct cabling is installed. Owners of newly built homes are often disappointed to discover the house has been wired to a standard plan which is not suitable. Sean can rectify this or better still, can customise the cabling for the new home in the first place. He feels televisions have got a little
simpler but agrees, just the push of the wrong button, and you’re in trouble. He has repeat customers who rely on his availability and ease of service. Wairarapa’s geography is a challenge for television reception and Sean is happy to offer the alternatives to achieving great reception Over the years Sean has found everything from trees, hills, ride-on mowers and egg incubators, have affected reception! Older satellite dishes often need parts replaced or realigned too. “Generally, I’ve got a good idea of what the problem is when I visit. Most jobs can be completed in one to two hours.” Sean can set up Smart televisions to access Netflix, YouTube, and other streaming services or ‘non-Smart’ TVs with Chromecast or Apple TV, so that internet content can be viewed. He also offers solutions to improve Wi-Fi coverage within your home. After a site assessment, he will provide a free quote. Sean has earned a reputation for being friendly and trustworthy, with customers regularly commenting on how impressed and happy they are with his work. Make life simple. Contact the Cable Guy.

Haglund Consulting Limited
Dish Café & Catering
MANNY DE SILVA.
LEFT, NATHAN HAGLUND AND DAN CHILDS.
Financial help and business A neighbourhood café which brings everyone coaching made easy together Money talk and keeping yourself on the financial straight and narrow may not be a laughing matter but when chatting about their accounting service with Nathan Haglund and Dan Childs, there’s more than a few jokes bandied about.
The congenial pair make talking finances fun and they immediately put you at ease. That’s not to say, offering an in-depth accounting service and allied financial coaching is not taken seriously, it’s just that Nathan and Dan want clients to feel ‘at home’ with them and their service and to see them as colleagues rather than purely a financial figure and whom they can discuss business affairs aiming to help the client understand their business and to grow. “Too often in the past accountants have been seen as the ‘untouchable’ finance man, who would do your tax and steer you in the right direction financially. It was a clinical process which many would not really understand and often profit driven for both sides. “Accounting must be technical, but it also must be intuitive,” believes Dan, who thrives on getting to know his clients and their families. He grew up in Carterton and studied at Victoria University. When Nathan was establishing up his own
business in Masterton, Dan jumped at the chance of joining him.
Nathan comes from Masterton, the son of well-known pharmacist Heaton Haglund. His mother also owned businesses in her own right. They were great role models. After studying at Massey University, Nathan worked in banking in several places around New Zealand before returning to his hometown. He was a partner in two accounting firms but hankered to work in his own right. Feeling he had the necessary experience and credentials to strike out on his own, he took the leap of faith. In September 2020, he set up Haglund Consulting based out of offices in the Enterprise Village behind Mangan Graphics on Queen Street south. While Dan was a newcomer, the rest of the staff moved with Nathan. They are Chartered Accountant Abby Ewen, and office managers Eleina Heggie and Angeline Colquhoun. Their collective experience and enthusiasm have created a great team. “Covid has caused people to look inward and to their business accounts. They want to understand exactly what is happening and how they can be proactive. We’re way more than bean counters and tax agents, we genuinely want to help people manoeuvre this new financial world.”
Your business deserves it.
It’s early morning and the tables and chairs are out on the First Street footpath, the coffee machine is churning, and the food cabinet is brimming with homemade goodies like the traditional club sandwiches, cheese scones, and the famous custard squares. This is how Manny de Silva and his team like to present every day to the Lansdowne neighbourhood in Masterton. “We have the same people coming daily, sometimes they’ll return later, and we love to see that’s it’s become a home-away-from-home for many of our customers.” He’s thoroughly enjoying the new business he purchased in January 2021 and likes it that he sees people come and settle into a corner to do some work or just enjoy the café atmosphere. Previously owned by three sisters for 12 years, Manny was aware of the loyal clientele, and he wanted to continue that valued service. “It truly is a neighbourhood café in every sense,” he says proudly. So, promising his regulars that nothing much would change, he has slowly introduced new food. The winter menu of seafood chowder and soups were favourites. So was the chicken curry and a pasta which are menu mainstays. Manny is a baker, by trade and his wife,
It truly is a neighbourhood café in every sense.” Shanika is a chef. They love serving the community they have adopted since their move to New Zealand from Sri Lanka in 2009. The couple have two children. Their 14-year-old daughter, Dahamsa, joins the busy café to help where she can in between studies at Chanel College, which her brother also attends. Manny is thinking now about summer food, as the evenings lengthen, and salads and wraps are on the menu. They would love to host your Christmas function too. Dish opens any time for any booked functions. It can comfortably seat 50 people. Situated in the Lansdowne shopping village, there’s never any problem with parking and that attracts customers who wish to escape the busy nature of central Masterton. While you are there, check out the paintings lining the walls by local artists. All are for sale and contribute to the community nature of Dish Café.

Supplejack Contracting
A hardy and flexible company just like the native vine, Supplejack. There are not many tracks in the Tararua Range that Dave Halliday and Kinane Dawes don’t know – in fact, they’ve possibly cut them. It helps knowing the rugged and diverse terrain in their wildlife and pest control work. It’s not only the Tararuas they know intimately, but much of the remote and wild outdoors all over the country. In 2015, after years of working in wildlife management with Greater Wellington Regional Council, Dave and Kinane established the business, Supplejack Contracting. It’s also Dave’s nickname (lean and tough – he laughs, just like the native vine). They were eagerly joined by Kinane’s wife Mallory Dawes – all three are directors in the company and come with a unique set of skills. Dave, as Programme Manager, looks after planning and budgets.
