Guest speaker – Mahé Drysdale
Mahe Drysdale needs no introduction. From being carried out of his skiff and being violently ill after finishing third in the 2008 Beijing singles scull to winning in a nail-biting photo finish victory at Rio in 2016, Mahe’s story is one of guts and sheer determination. His never say die attitude is evident that it was only in 2021 that the 42-year-old called time on his glittering career after being overlooked for another crack at Olympic glory. Mahe is the winner of two Olympic gold medals, at London in 2012, and by millimetres at Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and five World Championships from 2005 to 2011. He won the Halberg Supreme Award once in 2006, and five Halberg Sportsman of the Year Awards from 2006 to 2016. A little known fact is that Mahe also represented New Zealand in canoe polo at age group level.
