Introduction

What a marathon this project is. Ten weeks of hiking all over Wairarapa, interviewing, photographing, and telling these women’s stories.

Multiple people within the Wairarapa Times-Age team are involved with this annual production, now in its 10th year. There are the salespeople, writers, photographers, designers, and proof readers all kept under control by our mighty admin team within the Times-Age. The publication size has varied over the years but on

average between 80-90 women are profiled and their businesses outlined.

This year the number of women we feature is 92. Many have been profiled before, and report great feedback from being in our publication. They come fresh to this year’s publication, out the other end of covid and all its restrictions, with a new story to tell on how they survived, developed, and re-invented themselves, where necessary. Others we introduce are new faces and their businesses are

exciting and imaginative. Some are new to Wairarapa, and they bring a new perspective and skills which improve and add colour to our unique region, nestled inland and opening south out to the mighty Cook Strait.

Each year, I believe I have heard it all and then another amazing woman pops up with an innovative idea that she has turned into a business and a living.

There’s an overarching message that life and opportunities must be grabbed, and the only

hindrance may be lack of courage and willingness to step out into the unknown.

This is certainly not the case with the women featured within. My thanks go to fellow feature writer Angela Yeoman and some of the women who are part of large businesses and councils who provided copy. Otherwise for the 70-odd which I had the pleasure to meet, thank you for your time and generosity of self.

Lizette de Klerk is a qualified physiotherapist with extensive experience back in her home country of South Africa. She is 18 months into settling in New Zealand with her husband, Jaco (a qualified beekeeper and groundsman), and 14-year-old son, Henry, and is loving being involved with the team at Back in Action, in Masterton.

“The interaction between all the varied health professionals at Back in Action is wonderful. It is such a happy, positive place to practice.” She especially loves the interaction with the personal trainers at Body Boost – located in the same facility, to give her clients trusted professionals to continue their rehab with.

After the birth of her son, her interest in women’s health, particularly postpartum was heightened. Her work in neo-natal units alongside mums and babies and the loss of a child herself added to Lizette’s drive to advance women’s health education through her physiotherapy work.

Now a senior with a masters in sports physiotherapy as well as multiple women’s, men’s and sexual health courses under her belt, Lizette’s knowledge and skillset can help a variety of Back In Action’s clientele.

Lizette helps not only the pregnant or post-partum mother (who might be dealing with pelvic pain, prolapse or stress incontinence) but also young women, especially those involved in sport, going through the changes of puberty. More recently Lizette has completed study in breast cancer rehabilitation with a focus on exercise and education to restore function after surgery and chemotherapy.

Her passion for her work has seen her get involved with local schools supporting sports pupils and community events such as ‘Pink Ribbon Day’ where she will be a speaker as part of a Breast Cancer Foundation afternoon tea fundraiser.

“I love sharing my knowledge and in doing so empowering women and most importantly giving them hope!“

Duckett Funerals

The human face of loss

Funeral Director Trixie Duckett, together with long-time friend Bronwen Nicholas, give the funeral experience a human and very real face. They describe themselves as “the next generation of funeral director.”

The Duckett Funerals duo ride the emotional roller coaster experienced by each client: the grief of loss, memories, tall tales, and laughter. “Feedback from our clients is that they love what we have to offer,” Trixie says. “Some clients do not want sombre older men in suits to walk through the door.”

Starting up Duckett Funerals in 2021, Trixie brought Bronwen on board right from the start. “I shared her vision,” Bronwen says. “And then my mother died far too young, she was our second funeral. Maybe it will be one of the biggest losses I’m ever going to have. Trixie’s vision for her business became even clearer as I experienced first-hand the service Duckett Funerals offers.”

“We only wear our suits on the day of the funeral,” says Trixie. “But in every interaction with our clients we ‘wear’

ourselves: we’re natural and open. We answer questions honestly including the hard ones. We can be serious. We can laugh. We give hugs.”

Bronwen says: “we’re approachable, and we have all the soft skills.” Bronwen also whakapapas to Te Ati Awa. She brings a deep cultural understanding of how Māori approach death and grief.

In Wairarapa, it is nice to see more and more women in the funeral industry.

“Bronwen has a natural ability and affinity for this industry,” says Trixie.

“She’s getting ready to start the funeral directing course and feels like she’s found her niche.”

“It’s an opportunity to have a career and a profession in an industry I love,” Bronwen agrees.

She’s lived in Wairarapa for 19 years: getting married here, buying a house, and having children who are now old enough for Bronwen to work full time. “This is my opportunity to shine. I’m along for the ride with Duckett Funerals.”

After six years in business, Felicity Brooks and her refrigeration engineer husband, Adam, have a strong grasp on what’s wanted in the community from a service like theirs.

It’s three-fold. There’s the heat pump and heat transfer system installation and servicing; automotive air-conditioning maintenance, and now the increasing demand for mobile chiller and freezer trailers. These trailers come into their own as a chiller container at events but also when businesses have breakdowns and need portable units to store frozen goods. So far, Adam has built three chiller trailers, which are constantly on hire, plus they have one freezer trailer. If demand is any indication, more will be on the way. Initially, Felicity assisted Adam in the businesses doing part-time administration while keeping her ‘day job’, along with juggling the needs of three children. However, as Brooks Refrigeration has grown, she has taken the leap in 2023 and is now full-time with the business. She says events such as the Wairarapa College reunion, the Harvest Festival, the Rural Support Trust which

helped in the Tinui flooding, and a scout camp, all needed chiller trailers. It’s a massive co-ordination exercise to ensure they are in the right place at the right time.

On the farm, the mobile trailers come into play, when refrigeration facilities break down or need servicing. Cafes and restaurants’ fridge and freezer units need regular attention too, so enter the chiller and freezer trailers.

Along with Felicity, Adam is joined by Shane Hunt, who is completing his refrigeration engineer’s apprenticeship after years in the wine industry. Naturally mechanically minded, Shane appreciates the importance of refrigeration in all aspects of business.

When it comes to installing aircon units, Felicity and Adam like to be aware of clients’ budget and home layout and they work alongside them to ensure the correct size is installed for upmost efficiency. So, anything needing heating or cooling, or given an even temperature control, is where Brooks Refrigeration comes in. Give Felicity a call to see how she can help.

Wāhine toa with a “let’s do this” attitude, leading exciting developments at Pūkaha

Working with a formidable team to fulfil the vision and dreams of past generations is a career highpoint for Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre General Manager, Emily Court.

Since the establishment of the National Wildlife Centre Trust in 1981, Emily says the community has been right behind this important project.

“From track cutting, building aviaries and trapping pests, many families across the Wairarapa and Tararua regions have been involved in some way.

“While the organisation is expanding, with over 35 paid staff, the need for community support and volunteer time is still essential to ensure its long-term success.”

Pūkaha is at a pivotable stage in its history. The whenua was returned to the Rangitāne people in 2021 and this followed with the gifting of Pūkaha to the people of Aotearoa/New Zealand.

“The time is right to take this special place to the next level and maximise its value and benefits for the regions.”

And, the organisation is leading the way, showing what true partnership should look like, with iwi leaders and a kaitiaki trust organisation working hand-in-hand to achieve great things for past, current, and future generations.

The opening of Te Wānanga Taiao (Environmental Education Centre

with accommodation and a Marae) in July 2023 is an example of what is possible with genuine partnership and committed leadership within each organisation. The opportunities for economic, environmental, social and cultural advancement from this new facility are immense.

It just so happens that at the helm of each organisation are wāhine toa, strong and smart women, with sleeves rolled up and a “let’s do this” attitude.

STRONG LEADERSHIP

The current board of the charitable trust has implemented a co-chair governance model, with representation from Rangitāne in one of these essential positions.

Experienced businesswoman and company director, Mavis Mullins was delighted to step into the role of co-chairperson in 2022 alongside long-standing board member Claire Matthews.

Tina Te Tau-Brightwell is the representative of Rangitāne o Wairarapa on the Pūkaha Board.

Her connection is generational, growing up on the other side of the reserve at Makirikiri, Hastwell. Pūkaha was her whanau playground. Tina acknowledges Rangitane rangatira brothers koro Kuki and koro Jim Rimene and kaumatua for their devotion and guidance until their passing.

They, along with her mum, and her many kuia were instrumental in the return of many native bird species that were once lost.

At the helm of Rangitāne o Wairarapa Inc is Mihirangi Hollings. Fiercely devoted to the recognition of mana motuhake, tino rangatiratanga and ōritetanga for her people. Mihirangi appreciates the partnership relationship with Pūkaha and the contribution that relationship makes to conscientising the uniqueness of our country.

Rangitāne o Tamaki Nua-ā-Rua is led by General Manager Lucretia Mason. She has over 15 years of working with iwi and her current position sees her in charge of ‘Te Whare Taiao’ - all matters of environmental, cultural and education for the rūnanga. “Being part of this Kaupapa ticks so many key boxes for our whanau, we can’t wait for it to open on Matarirki weekend” says Lucretia.

Making the world lighter one ear at a time

“Belief that our service can help others, is what encourages me to continually expand,” says Liz, a registered nurse, who has been specialising in ear health for the past 10 years.

She continues to be amazed how a simple cleaning of the ears can have a massive positive impact on an individual. “Patients describe feeling immediately lighter, once wax has been cleared.”

Liz highly recommends regular ear checks. “They are vital to hearing and overall health.”

“Don’t leave it until you can hardly hear, your ears are painful, or you are having dizzy spells.

Come and see us regularly and these dreadful problems will not occur.”

It’s a clear message Liz is keen to spread. She’s been spreading herself all over too. Checking people’s ear health by visiting rest homes in Wairarapa, Palmerston North, Feilding and Taupo. Also opening a clinic on the Kapiti Coast at Paraparaumu in March 2022.

Within Wairarapa, she runs three clinics and would like to offer more hours.

To do this, she has employed Kirsten Ryan, a registered nurse with experience in district nursing as well as general nursing. Kirsten will be seeing patients in Masterton, while Liz is on the road.

If Liz or Kirsten detect anything serious and feel further treatment is necessary, referrals are made directly to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physician. They also have direct contact with GPs to ensure a prescription for medication without having to make another appointment.

However, mostly ears just need a good clean and general health check. An annual check is recommended. You won’t regret it.

One stop party shop expands

There’s a festive and manic atmosphere around Festival Hire this year.

The event hire and decoration company is thriving with exclusive supplier contracts, weddings, and all manner of events to supply for – but there’s even more reason to get excited. The purpose-built building at The Poplars Business Park site, just off Ngaumutawa Road, will be the new company headquarters.

Shelley and Greg Mason have expanded out of reach of their Queen Street site and the new building will enable them to bring in trucks to load and unload undercover.

“It’s been six years of hard graft and ducking covid, but people want to get out and celebrate,” says Shelley. She describes Wairarapa as having a ‘treasure box’ of events and often people are spoiled for choice when it comes to local happenings. She says covid fostered a coming together of businesses and services involved in events ... caterers, celebrants, venues ... and Festival Hire.

All joining in together to create amazing events.

With such a solid base, they feel confident about moving the business forward. Having a large space where all their equipment can be under one roof will be ideal. There will be ample display space too which excites Shelley. Their Hampton Marquee is ever popular for hire, with its vintage vibe and woodgrain poles.

With the new showroom they can now increase their party supply items to support the hire equipment. The idea that Festival Hire is now your one stop party shop. No need to head out of town or buy online, you can simply pop into the shop, and get all your party needs in one place.

“All you need to do is ask and we can show you what we can supply.” Shelley and the team like to lead clients from the beginning of an idea to the fantastic end event, guiding them through all the necessary intricacies.

Shelley and Greg could not have done all this without the work of the fine Festival Hire team. They also want to thank their local community for the ongoing support.

Visit the new location on their opening day on Saturday 5 August!

Helping businesses grasp digital marketing

Odette Bayliss, and partner Patrick Flynn, set up Digital Cactus almost two years ago when they noticed small businesses struggling with digital marketing.

Now with team member, Poppy Nelson, they service clients throughout Wairarapa and beyond.

Digital Cactus is a marketing agency to help clients grow and nurture their business online, via social media management, digital advertising, and website design and development.

“When we say ‘grow and nurture’ we understand that, depending on the business, this may be done together or separately.

We have clients who hand over their full marketing function to be looked after, while others may be content with their current client base but recognise the importance of nurturing that relationship with existing customers.”

Odette is the resident social ‘media brain’ and certified ‘word nerd’ for Digital Cactus.

She’s responsible for all the social media clients, content strategies, and the writing that goes on around it. Upon announcing the plunge into business, Odette and Patrick were met with great support and were overwhelmed with work, proving there was a huge need in the business community for such a service.

Digital Cactus offers regular workshops helping business owners with general digital information and teaching them about digital marketing, also offering steps towards planning their own social media content.

“These have been popular,” Odette says. “We see so much collaboration and connection within this group. We’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with many female-led businesses in Wairarapa, and we love having the opportunity to meet and work with all small business owners.

If you are scratching for ideas, wanting to make social media work, or looking for the right words – call Odette.

Meet Rethink Accounting’s team of small business experts

Last year we introduced you to Rethink Accounting founder Kathrine Way. is year her team take you through the joys of getting to grips with your business. And they mean that sincerely, because for Rethink, accounting isn’t just tax returns. It’s about helping business owners realise their dreams, and that’s pretty joyous.

Learning from the past and planning for the future

Rethink Accounting’s down-to-earth Chartered Accountant Felicity Tate says, “People spend a lot of time working in their business, but not nearly as much working on their business. You may know what works for your business. But if you keep on with what works now, you’ll keep getting the same results. Sometimes it’s smart to ask yourself, ‘How can I build on this?’ A business planning session is only four hours, and the clarity you get can grow your business and save you time.”

As well as facilitating Rethink Accounting’s business planning sessions Felicity also meets with clients for their annual business reviews and proactive accounting meetings. She explains how annual business reviews di er to business planning. “In your annual business review, we take time to re ect on your previous year in business and what you’ve learned. You gain a better understanding of your business, where you’re making money and where you’re spending. Are you making as much as you want to support your lifestyle?”

Rethink Accounting believes that it’s essential to understand your nancial statements and tax obligations, the annual accounts review meeting is a great opportunity to do that.

Rethink Accounting o ers business advisory services that suit every business no matter where they are on their journey. If you’re unsure of what your business might need, or what services are available at Rethink, a great place to start is the proactive accounting meeting which is for prospective and current Rethink

clients, it’s ideal if you want to work on improving your business but don’t know where to start, and it’s free!

e beauty of taking time to plan

Anja Lister also facilitates Rethink Accounting’s business planning sessions, so we asked her why businesses need a plan. Anja explains, “A plan clari es your purpose. If you’re in business but you haven’t got a clear purpose, it’s hard. Where are you heading? What do you want to achieve? How will you get there in a way that ts with your values?”

“We use a simple business planning structure that’s easy to follow. It doesn’t matter how big or small your business is, or what your goals are, our model works for everyone.”

“Before we meet we get you to answer some important questions, then in your planning session we consider your purpose, your values, what you want to achieve in business, and in life. We like to talk about three freedoms: mind freedom, nancial freedom, and time freedom. en we look at what makes you di erent to your competitors, your short and longterm goals, and how you reach them,

including the cash ow you need to achieve your dreams.”

Rethink Accounting also provides ongoing coaching support to help you meet your goals. ese meetings will make sure you keep on track with achieving your goals and ensure that you know that you can deal with potential business opportunities and challenges proactively.

Know your nancial situation and be more prepared for change Accounting Technician Robyn Morgan explains why it’s worth doing more with your accountant than simply ling your end of year tax return. “Being in business has been challenging in the last few years, it’s become apparent people need more up-to-date nancial information about their business. Many businesses have to pivot fast and need real time information to make decisions.”

“Business planning makes sure that your business works for you so you can live how you want to live. To give you an example, we work with a brilliant business owner who didn’t pay much attention to the nancial

side of his business. Unfortunately, that meant things got a little out of control. So recently we’ve been meeting more o en, and he’s more in control of his business, sees where it’s going, and really appreciates the value of being proactive with his nancial a airs.”

Robyn has been with Rethink Accounting for 10 years and puts her loyalty down to enjoying the allwomen team. “It brings a di erent dynamic and makes Rethink a very exible place to work. We work with a lot of women business owners and have found that people like working with us because they feel more listened to. e relationships we have with people are very important to us.”

Grow your business with better nancial advice

Be adventurous –try new vegetables

Every Thursday, in a produce chiller, down a long and winding gravel drive, east of Masterton, there’s raucous laughter and fervent activity, where as quick as vegetables are harvested, they are shared out into cardboard boxes stamped “Little Farms”. They are being sent to keen customers looking forward to their weekly fix of greens. Brilliant red tomatoes, bright orange carrots, leafy greens like Sorrel, Chard, and Dandelion sit magnificently amongst regular lettuce and cabbages. There’s pumpkins and potatoes too, augmented by bread from Clareville Bakery and trays of Wairarapa Eggs from Chester Road.

Alex Morrissey’s passion for growing organic vegetables and sharing the love of these with as many people as possible, has seen her Little Farms business bursting in popularity. The organic vegetables are all grown in Wairarapa by seven growers, including Alex in Pirinoa.

She is mentored by organic vegetable guru Jeremy Howden, and it is on his land that the chiller sits. Orders for produce must be made by midnight Monday via the Little Farms website

Kāinga

Manaakitanga on a Plate

and then the vegetables and other products are delivered early Thursday to the produce chiller. That’s when four workers come in to help Alex sort and pack. It’s organised chaos when Women in Business visit, but everyone knows their role, and all eyes are on the vegetables and other produce. Courier times must be met, and vegetables delivered to outlets around Wairarapa, ensuring a same day service. Pick up points are Bin Inn Masterton, Orchard Bar Carterton, Pirinoa and Kahutara Schools.

Little Farms produce is the envy of many in Wellington and around 30 deliveries per week go overnight to the city. “We emphasise freshness, so time is of the essence in getting the vegetables out,” says Alex, who apes a traffic warden directing the sorters and boxes. She’s got a baby on board too, snuggled in a sling. Zola was born in January 2023.

Alex has degrees in Law and International Relations and was working as a lawyer in Masterton when she married, Kheinan. They hankered for a more rural lifestyle and as Kheinan manages a dairy farm, they now live at Pirinoa.

Shelley Rutene took the bull by the horns and established Kāinga Eatery mid-covid, in 2021.

“Owning a business is something I’ve always wanted to do. My life had reached a stage where I was ready to face the risks.

I knew if I didn’t do it then I wouldn’t get around to doing it. My four children are grown ups now. I was ready to create my own destiny.”

Kāinga Eatery offers menu food and cabinet food all day from early morning, evoking the Wairarapa region when possible: pāua, kina, venison, and portobello mushrooms.

The menu changes regularly. You might find a warm pork and prawn salad, kaimoana chowder, or peppered tofu toasted sandwiches with kimchi and spinach.

Shelley developed and regularly rewrites the menu, written in both Māori and English.

Shelley is the sole boss of Kāinga Eatery, although she says: “family helps a lot. My son does the social media and my daughter-in-law, a lawyer, helps with contracts.” Born and bred in Carterton, Shelley has whakapapa to Rangitāne and Ngāti Kahungunu. Extended

whānau in Wairarapa is important to her, as is her cultural heritage.

“Everything I do at Kāinga Eatery is underpinned by three core Māori values: Manaakitanga (hospitality, generosity), Kotahitanga (unity, togetherness, solidarity), and Ahurei (uniqueness).

I revaluate at the end of every day and especially after a stressful day - my values keep me grounded and focussed”.

Shelley designed the café’s décor and warm interior together with Jeanette Southey, a relation, with the aim of bringing feelings of home, warmth, and love into the café.

“The word Kāinga means home,” she says. “It’s a fitting name for the business. It’s nestled in the heart of the village of Carterton, where I grew up.” Unsurprisingly, Kāinga Eatery won the Pakihi Māori Business Award (Kahungunu ki Wairarapa) in 2022. What’s next for Shelley Rutene and Kāinga Eatery? “I’m taking a foodie trip around Italy in May,” Shelley beams. Look out for new ideas appearing on the menu – they’re coming your way soon!

Feet: Your Lifeline To A Healthy Life

Healthy feet are your lifeline to a healthy life. If you neglect the health of your feet, your lifestyle can become hugely restricted.

La Donna Stancliffe-Deans has been a podiatrist for over 30 years in the United Kingdom and in New Zealand. More recently, she’s been joined by Jeremy Mannering who qualified in podiatry from AUT.

“Here at Walk This Way Podiatry, the health of your feet is of paramount importance to us, no matter your age,” La Donna says. All aspects of podiatry care are offered by Walk This Way Podiatry from both its sites: 5 Park Street, Masterton, and the Carterton Pharmacy.

La Donna offers a multifaceted clinic. Services include diabetic assessment and treatment, PVD assessments (PVD refers to peripheral vascular disease, a slow and progressive circulation disorder), nail surgery, dry needling of verruca’s, general nail care for the elderly population, and orthotic management.

“You can treat a patient from the beginning of their problems to a satisfactory outcome. It can be quite exciting to go on the journey.”

She also specialises in the care of extremely nervous patients and children. If you have foot or shin pain,

La Donna is the one to see.

“With podiatry, no two days are the same. You open the doors and begin. It is the best profession in my opinion,” La Donna says. “You can treat a patient from the beginning of their problems to a satisfactory outcome. It can be quite exciting to go on the journey.”

La Donna says: “I love working in Wairarapa. It is a joy to serve the people here and it’s my intention to continue to do so for as long as I’m needed in this community.”

Indoor Children’s adventure park – the place of dreams

• Kids driving you bonkers in the colder weather?

• Got a special occasion where you’d like to treat the kids?

• Maybe you’d just like them to get rid of all that energy?

Aer more than five years of dreaming and planning for one intrepid couple, Amanda and Joe Mitchell, Wairarapa has its very own indoor amusement park for children.

They have faced mulple bureaucrac hiccups and equipment delays, but finally Go Zone is all go. They especially want to give a shout out to the local businesses who have dropped everything to do their bit for Go Zone and help get it up and running. The posive support has buoyed the Mitchells and kept them going.

The entertainment park is in Norman Avenue, Waingawa and includes a large playground for older children, a trampoline area, and a toddler playpark that includes a ny town. There is also two party spaces in marquees. But wait, there’s more says Amanda, “We have a couple of special features that we’re going to keep under wraps which we’re hoping will set us apart from similar parks,” she says with a wink.

Amanda is a former schoolteacher and Joe, was a forestry worker. They wanted to work together and provide something innovave to the community. With two young children, the idea brewed about seng up an indoor adventure park for children. “When we became parents, we realised how lile there was to do with children indoors in Wairarapa. We’re a great outdoor acvies region but it’s harder to find indoor things to do.”

“It’s been an agonising and a long work in progress, learning all the hurdles and

safety requirements necessary to get the scheme off the ground. We then just decided to bite the bullet and go for it.” Amanda and Joe have sunk their finances into their dream, selling their house to help it proceed.

Amanda says she wants the park to be community-driven and which everyone could be proud of.

She hopes it will aract visitors from outside the region too. If the park does well, the couple have great plans to expand. Meanme, they just want to get it up and running smoothly.

They are especially excited to be part of the Waingawa Industrial Estate. “It’s a developing area just south of Masterton which is full of promise.”

Pampering sanctuary in the heart of Masterton

Taking time out to pamper oneself has always been important - even more so in the past few pandemic years.

Natural disasters and the rising cost of everything, could make you want to run for the hills. There’s a better place to go. Justine Griffin’s Pure Bliss Spa on Essex Street in Masterton.

Justine qualified a decade ago as a Beauty Therapist then six years ago, when hankering to own her own business, she decided she wanted her spa to be a place where people would come for a treatment, rest, and stay a while. A kind of refuge from the storm. When she secured the picturesque cottage, sitting under the shelter of a mighty oak in the grounds of an Essex Street house, it was just the venue she was seeking.

Clients leave behind their busy lives, come up the path onto the veranda, hear the babbling stream, where often ducks are paddling, and they enter a restful sanctuary. It’s a slice of heaven. And then, you meet Justine. She has a natural gentleness, which makes you want to whisper. Your shoulders relax, hands unclench. Justine’s beauty treatments are truly pure bliss.

Clients

Not surprising, Justine has many loyal and repeat clients who will sometimes bring along a friend, to chill with and share treatments together. “It can just be a fun girlie outing.”

“If I had to choose what was my favourite treatment to give, it would be facials. Seeing clients enthused from the results makes me happy.”

She believes a glowing, healthy skin goes a long way to giving people confidence to face the world and all its intricacies.

Justine studied beauty therapy at UCOL in Masterton. She’s had wonderful support and encouragement from her family which makes her feel confident about the future. Her greatest supporters have been her late Nana, Marjorie, partner Lane and her mother Diane.

“Running a business is far from easy, but it’s the best decision I have ever made. At the end of each day, I realise it’s what helps make me happy. Thank you to all clients for your ongoing support.”

Chrisne Dawang and Abby Ewen are the feminine arm of HaglundChilds in Masterton – a small, bouque accounng pracce where personable service is the ulmate aim.

Nathan Haglund established the pracce in September 2020 and Dan Childs jumped at the chance of joining him. Early in 2023, Dan bought into the business as a director and shareholder. Two men, two women – even and dy. A perfect accounng service.

Abby Ewen has been there with Nathan from the start. She is a Chartered Accountant and is a great point of reference for all things technical and complex. Much of her analycal skill was honed working overseas as an Investment Appraisal Analyst at two major firms in London. She has found returning to her hometown of Masterton rewarding, and she enjoys the experse and comfortable banter of the HaglundChilds office. She lives with husband Hamish, and daughter, Indie. Respected by her clients for her technical experse, Abby thinks outside the square and finds this skill increasingly valuable in today’s everchanging world of diverse compliance and regulaons.

Chrisne Dawang is studying to be an accountant, joining the firm in July 2022. Born in the Philippines she came to New Zealand 16 years ago with her parents. She graduated with a Psychology Degree from Massey University and with an interest in accounng, joined Inland Revenue in Wellington.

But it’s Wairarapa that she’s found her home and aer three years as the Team Co-ordinator at Powershop, she’s thrilled to be working in an accounng pracce. She lives with her six-year-old daughter, Jorgine.

Chrisne loves the atmosphere of

HaglundChilds and that they foster regular contact with their clients, “not just once a year at tax me.”

There is ‘once a year’ compliance though which must be adhered to, and HaglundChilds has innovavely employed Patricia Dabu and Kateleen Canda (known as Pat and Kate) based in the Philippines. Described by Abby and Chrisne as “The Back Room Agency,” Pat and Kate have been with Haglund Consulng (now HaglundChilds) for two years.

It works well with the two offshore women helping with roune compliance issues, GST, and admin. “They may be over there, but are very much part of us,” adds Abby.

Talented athletes a great sister act at their new gym

Highly and diversely qualified in health and fitness, sisters, Vicky and Corrina Paine have taken the exciting step of going into business together – they’ve bought a gym. Formerly known as The Hubb Health Club.

Both former trainers at The Hubb, they’re still driving the same mission and values but have rebranded to ‘Body Boost,’ and continue to enjoy the collaboration with existing Back in Action’s team of physiotherapists, chiropractors, and other health professionals.

Vicky is a qualified massage therapist and personal trainer with 12 years’ experience. She specialises in deep tissue and sports massage and has a loyal clientele. She loves how both qualifications complement to enhance clients’ lives. Corrina is well-known for Reformer Pilates especially popular with clients seeking rehabilitation and strength and has been working in the fitness industry for 13 years. The sisters purchased the gym when it was offered to them by Back in Action’s Ryan and Maryanne Monastra and Active Fitness, Kev Rickey.

“We couldn’t let this opportunity pass us by, as it is always something we have wanted to do.”

Only 16 months apart in age, they work well together bringing their passion and skills to educate people to reach their health and fitness goals.

Born and raised in Devon, England, Vicky and Corrina came to New Zealand with their parents and younger siblings in 2004. The entire family were raised “keen and sporty.”

So, it was no surprise the industries they found themselves in. The Masterton Athletics Club has the name, Paine, on leader boards and trophies at its clubrooms. Both girls, now with young families, still enjoy running and enjoy the physical and mental benefits they receive from maintaining strength and fitnesssomething they feel everyone should get a taste of.

Always mind and body active, Vicky and Corrina are excited for the range of classes and activities they will bring through their new gym alongside the advanced technology, MYZONE, a heart rate monitor which measures the effort during training.

Exciting times ahead for store under new ownership

Selina Griggs is excited that for the first time in her professional life, she is working for herself.

“E citing and daunting,” she says when considering her co-ownership of Paper Plus Masterton with its staff and associated franchises of Lotto, Kiwibank and Post Shop.

She and Richard Hamilton have purchased Paper Plus Masterton a er considering it for some time. Initially it was pre-covid when the former owners were planning to move overseas. Then in early , Selina and Richard got more serious and with the Paper Plus business again up for sale, they decided the time was right. They o cially took over in November .

Selina and Richard had worked together for The Warehouse Group in Masterton Selina being with the Group, in various roles, for nearly years. “In the tearoom we would start dreaming about having our own business and it grew from there.”

“We’re keen to support Wairarapa businesses, get involved in community events, and to support N made,” says Selina who is also a big advocate of sustainability, reducing packaging, and considering the environment when buying for the store.

“We’re buzzing with ideas and can’t wait to implement many of them. We’ve ust got to steer ourselves slowly. It’s all a huge learning curve.”

New face at the helm of Trinity Schools

There’s a form of ‘coming home’ for Cath Archer, recently appointed Chief Executive of Trinity Schools in Masterton. She’s returning to the grass roots education world, after a stellar executive career in marketing, communications, investment, and innovation. It’s feet on the ground in Wairarapa now for Cath who reached dizzying heights creating new businesses to international levels, launching innovative brands, raising business capital, and fostering stakeholder relations. She has two children who attended St Matthew’s and Rathkeale Colleges.

The Trinity Schools Trust Board are the Board of Proprietors for Hadlow School, Rathkeale and St Matthew’s Colleges. They own the schools, land, and buildings, including Hadlow Pre-school. They are also responsible for student boarding, special character, and extracurricular activities.

Cath’s role at the helm is to steer steady governance and she’s excited to be returning to the education sector which she has skirted for years. She likes the special character of the Trinity schooling with its Anglican faith-based nature and that it encompasses preschoolers through to school leavers.

“Each school campus is an idyllic setting. Wairarapa is so lucky to have Trinity system within its community, attracting students from all over NZ and

overseas.”

Previously, Cath was founder and Managing Director of an innovative export company, Archer McRae. As manager for Start-Up Ecosystem for Callaghan Innovation, she launched NZ’s technology business acceleration programme. She was Institute Director for Le Cordon Bleu NZ and established the tertiary school for chef training and hospitality management. Back in 2000, she was at the helm of Toast Martinborough, and set up the wine marketing group, Wines from Martinborough, who were instrumental in the partnership for Le Cordon Bleu coming to NZ. Later she was CEO for Alana Estate.

Born in Gore, Cath was raised in Invercargill and Palmerston North. Her father was a school principal and later an education psychologist. Eventually in Wellington, she considered teacher training, but instead took a human resource management path.

Cath is keen to foster togetherness between the three Trinity schools, encouraging a group focus with the motto – ‘Together as One.’ Already pupils are encouraged to interact, and she wants to develop this further. She believes one of the greatest challenges in life is establishing networks, and having self-belief, something she’ll promote in bucketloads.

Trinity Schools Trust Board Together As One

We support our Trinity family of schools to deliver balanced excellence – spiritually, physically, socially, culturally and academically – enabling students and staff to experience life in all its fullness through our Special Character.

Dr Melanie Wallis, a Masterton chiropractor for 20 years, works with patients from the cradle to the grave. “A wide range of people can benefit from Chiropractic care: babies, people with ACC injuries, sportspeople, older people, and pregnant women,” Melanie says. Melanie’s focus is to assist you to achieve the best possible health outcomes. Stress management is particularly important at Wallis Chiropractic. “When we’re under stress, we produce cortisol. In small doses, this is good for us. Too much cortisol, however, can make muscles sore and affect our nervous system.”

Melanie works in a holistic way across the chemical, physical and emotional aspects of our wellness. Not only does chiropractic

address pain but patients often report also feeling more energised, sleeping better, and having increased concentration.

Crucial to Melanie’s work is getting to know us and our lives. She shares a rapport and a history with us that enables her to recognise when she hasn’t got to the bottom of what’s going on. Cultural sensitivities are important, and Melanie always talks through what she intends to do before she touches someone. She wants you to be an active participant in your health. Melanie will also work with small animals to help improve their health.

Melanie Wallis is well connected with complementary health professionals including the range of health and wellness options at 5 Park Street, Masterton.

Imagine getting to and from Wellington airport, without white knuckled hands clenching the steering wheel, not being stuck in a traffic jam, and alighting or falling into a luxury van feeling rested, before or after a flight ... and all that entails.

That’s what Pamela Feiertag promises from the driving service she provides.

“Just leave it to me and I’ll get you there with all the frills,” she laughs. She, and her stunning black Mercedes van, sign written in gold, have created a business, Wai Shuttles, where she can offer travel in ultimate comfort.

“It’s so comfortable and smooth I’ve had some customers fall asleep during the journey. Others have said they did not even notice the winding Remutaka Pass road.”

So, if you are organising a special function where people are coming together from all over, you need to get to and from the airport, or simply fancy getting a group of friends together to have some fun, Pamela will be your trusty driver.

Established in November 2020,

Wai Shuttles is attracting interest from businesspeople, keen to travel and arrive at airports and other appointments, refreshed for not having to battle traffic themselves.

“I take one less pressure out of their life,” says Pamela. Rates from Masterton to Wellington Airport are very reasonable, depending on numbers sharing the van. Group discounts are available too.

Pamela is a certified driver with a Transport Service Licence and chose her vehicle for its remarkable safety profile and comfort. “Everyone enjoys a bit of luxury and I’m proud to be able to offer it.”

Pamela adores the Wairarapa which she and her husband have adopted as home. From Germany, she has previously worked in pharmaceutical sales and knows full well the value of travelling for work in comfort. They live in Masterton and are keen to offer her shuttle service to others keen to explore the region. “It is such a beautiful place, largely unexplored. I’d like to show them around.”

A unique memory-making Masterton mansion up for sale

Kadia Merralls’ recipe to create such a special venue is having tons of energy with a creave bent, having a love of people, appreciang the finer things of life and being able to cook is a bonus. “It’s a unique environment that’s nowhere else”. In addion to the grand house that Lansdowne House is known for there is a 1960’s bungalow, combined they sleep 12 people.”

Aer two decades of running the three-storey Tudor mansion as a venue, Kadia wants to step back and let new owners adapt a fresh approach to the grand old lady. Lansdowne House was built in 1923 for solicitor and wealthy landowner, Hugh Williams. He had fallen in love with Helen Jones, a Governess. Story goes, the matrons of Masterton looked down on her low status, and so Hugh wanted to build something special for her. It’s a beauful love story and Kadia says she has felt it in the walls of the house which emits a “genteel, peaceful air.” The large trees which surround the property, add the external grace.

Lansdowne House features rimu panelling throughout, a grand staircase, oen used by brides alighng from the first floor. A honeymoon suite on the first floor has the nostalgic atmosphere of yesteryear but with all modern facilies cleverly entwined. The home’s good condion, 100 years on, is testament to Kadia’s loving care, and aenon to detail. Even the original servants’ quarters tucked in a corner of the first floor, is in great condion, with its own personal twisng staircase to the kitchen. There are six working fireplaces, solid wooden floors, leadlight windows, cushioned window seats, and 12 spectacular chandeliers. With the warm red glow of pelmet lighng and flickering candles, there’s an

atmosphere which can’t be replicated in modern buildings.

“It all takes you back to a me when you would dress up and enjoy a bit of class. I get people commenng on how much they appreciate this.”

Kadia and husband, Richard, moved to Lansdowne House on 7 October, 2003, and applied their extensive business experience into running the home as an event venue. They lived on site and opened the ground floor to guests. It has become the place where lifelong memories have been made.

When Richard died five years ago, Kadia gallantly connued with a team of loyal staff.

“Part of me doesn’t want to leave but I know it is me,” she says. “Time for the house to have a new lease of life and be owned by people who may well take it to the next level.”

Leading the way in rural legal expertise

It’s refreshing to find legal professionals who not only understand the unique challenges faced by rural communities but also possess the expertise to navigate them with precision. At the heart of Masterton’s legal scene, Julie Millar and Aimee McGowan, partners at Gibson Sheat Lawyers, are trailblazing women in business, offering specialist rural expertise that is making a difference in the lives of farmers and landowners across the region. But what does this mean and how could they help you? The rural sector has its own set of complexities and opportunities, let’s discuss a few. Joint ventures are becoming increasingly popular in the rural sector, as they allow farmers to pool resources, skills, and knowledge to achieve greater success. Julie and Aimee’s expertise in drafting and negotiating joint venture agreements ensures that their clients have a solid foundation for their collaborations.

Family succession structures are vital for passing down the family business or farm to the next generation. Julie

and Aimee are adept at navigating the complexities of these arrangements, ensuring the continuity of the family’s hard work and legacy.

Trust advice is another area where Julie and Aimee can advise on setting up and maintaining a trust tailored to your needs. Trusts are legal entities that hold assets, and they provide a valuable tool for managing family wealth and ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Lastly, limited partnerships are on the rise. This is where there are two types of partners - general partners who manage the business and are personally liable for its debts, and limited partners who contribute capital and have limited liability.

Julie and Aimee’s friendly, approachable manner, coupled by a fantastic local team with broad legal knowledge, makes them the go-to professionals for anyone seeking legal assistance in these specialised areas.

Helping guide people to farewell loved ones

Wairarapa Funeral Services has been helping people farewell their loved ones for 85 years. It provides the full range of funeral facilities including a modern, comfortable chapel, catering facilities, private viewing room, and Masterton’s only on-site crematorium.

Anna Wolffram is a qualified Funeral Director and Embalmer and feels honoured to be with such a reputable firm. A self-described ‘Miramar Girl’ raised in Wellington, she was struck in her mid-twenties by how important funerals were, and how the way loved ones are farewelled can have a lasting impact. “I really felt drawn to wanting to help people during this raw time.”

Initially she trained as an embalmer and funeral direction became the natural path thereafter. She sees her role as an advisor, gently guiding people through the process of arranging a funeral. “We like to put people at ease, ask what they are wanting, and then actualise it. Even if it’s a unique request, we’ll do our best to make it possible.

Anna and her husband moved to Carterton three years ago where home affordability was more realistic. She

loved the idea of getting out and about in the hills and walking their dogs. Being both an embalmer and a registered Funeral Director is a distinct advantage in that she can work with people through the entire process.

Embalming is not always wanted by people, but Anna feels if they want the deceased to be with them for a while, people need to know practical facts. There has been a swing away from embalming and Anna believes that’s due more to mis-understanding of the process, than desire. She is keen to get information out to public.

Embalming facts:

*Embalming gives families TIME to process the death of a loved one, to prepare to travel, and to spend time with the person whose died. Without embalming, nature begins to take its course, sometimes rapidly.

*Embalming allows family members to have a casket at home or on the marae.

*The process used is likened to a blood transfusion. Only a very small amount of preservative is used, and some of these chemicals occur naturally in the human body.

Wahine in Forestry is a national forestry women’s group formed by the eight Wood Councils of New Zealand that seeks to address the lack of a female perspective in our sector. Today we claim only 18% females in our forestry workforce, while the average in the primary sector is 23%. We want to increase professional participation for women to expand the opportunities and think about our forests in new ways. There is great value in ensuring women are exposed to and have access to all avenues of the forest sector and in the future.

This national group links together female students enrolled at Canterbury University - New Zealand School of Forestry with women working in the forest sector, providing workshops, conferences, and networking events. Forestry has over 7000 women working across New Zealand, and the vision of this organization is to

provide inspiration for our next generation to look outside of just forestry and see how all the Food and Fibre sectors rely on wood to deliver their products. Forestry students will be attending the Agriwomen’s Development Trust Generation Change workshop in Christchurch to connect with other young women in the wider agricultural sector.

Networks are vital to provide a sense of belonging, and that’s what Wahine in Forestry strives for, a mycorrhizal fungal network for others along with safe and welcoming workplaces fostering connection and connectivity.

The challenges facing our forests and workforces are diverse and there is need for more diverse perspectives to help ensure the health and future of our sector. We cannot solve all our problems, but wouldn’t it be great if we could participate in designing the solutions? Together we can create that room for creative problem solving.

Jolly Roger Swim School

Preparing children for a happy and safe life in water

Why is it so important for people to learn to swim?

It is the only sport which can save your child’s life Drowning is still one of the most common causes of accidental death in children so being able to swim is an essential life-saving skill. Apart from that, it is a whole lot of fun splashing about in water with your child. Swimming also keeps your child’s heart and lungs healthy, increases stamina and even improves balance and posture.

Erina Cherry discovered how much fun it could be when in her early 20s she applied for a job at the Jolly Roger Swim School in Carterton. Held at the Carterton indoor swimming pool, the then owners Lynn iffen and Melissa Staines were looking for an instructor. ith a natural a nity for babies and children, Erina trained under Swimming N and then taught for 0 years. Recently, she took the plunge and purchased the business herself. Now married to Simon, they have a daughter, -year-old Matilda a confident little swimmer, thanks to her mum.

Swimming lessons are held according

to age. 0-3 years, pre-school 3-5 years, and then over 5s known as the School Age Class. hen introducing babies to water, Erina says parents and caregivers are encouraged to sing and play with their infants. “ e laugh a lot just trying to show how much fun we can have in the water.” Subtle steps are splashing, water on the face, and then going underwater.”

Erina says some children take to the water naturally whereas some hate it from the start. “It’s all about going slow with them, allowing their confidence to build.” Learning swimming strokes and being able to float come later.

The lessons are the only indoor ones available in South Wairarapa, so people come from far and wide. There is a waiting list, so if you’re keen for your child to be water conscious and capable, visit the website www.jollyrogerswimschool.co.nz or visit them on Facebook.

And, the name Jolly Roger? Adding to the fun all the achievement levels are pirate themed One Eyed ack, Sinbad, ack Sparrow etc.

The General Manager of Lyndale Care in Masterton, on the corner of Cole and Coradine Streets, is Emma Taylor, and she loves dressing up, giving residents and staff an enjoyable time.

She’ll happily compete to win the best dressed prize. She loves having fun, seeing smiles and hearing lots of laughter coming down the halls.

“I get so much joy from being around older people. They have life experience and so many stories to tell.”

Residents also enjoy dressing up, and a mannequin “Flossy” has joined them. She dresses for all occasions and residents can’t wait to see what her next costume is.

So far, in 2023 it has been all about getting back to normality after covid.

“The best way to do this is by having new experiences. Dressing up, going on memorable outings, such as picking and strolling through the Mangamaire sunflower field, and enjoying fish and chips at Lake Ferry.

Seeing the laughter and smiles made everything we have been through bearable.”

A registered geriatric nurse, Emma manages a loyal team of staff and 59 residents. It includes the secure dementia community facility further up the road.

“It’s a huge responsibility and I bow to my incredible staff who make it all work. Our home is a beautiful size. Enough for it to be a strong community, and small enough that we know all the residents and their families intimately.”

Prior to coming to Masterton, Emma was working in aged care in the Hutt Valley. She immediately liked the feeling of Lyndale.

“I love old houses and the moment I stepped inside, it just felt right.”

The welcoming timber-lined entrance foyer and dining room/lounge are part of the original homestead.

As well as the Hutt Valley, Emma has worked in aged care, community, and palliative nursing in Auckland and UK. She and partner, Richard, live in Martinborough.

One of Emma’s favourite sayings is “wrinkles only go where the smiles have been”.

Bulk native planting for farm and lifestyle gardens

Three like-minded women, all dabbling in native planting producing seedlings in their own plots, one day had a brainwave that if they collaborated, they could plant out the world – or at least Wairarapa, and regions nearby!

Gemma Phillips, Kim Williams, and Kylie Carlsen all became friends when parents at Wainuioru School, east of Masterton. Between them they have 10 children. They all farm with their husbands. Planting natives along waterways, in erosion prone areas, and to simply augment nooks and crannies of the countryside, were on all their agendas. Each have off-farm work too. Gemma is a massage therapist, Kim is in banking, and Kylie drives the school bus.

Gemma’s husband, Andy, formerly from Hawke’s Bay, now farms Gemma’s family farm (the Skeets) and according to Gemma is obsessed with planting trees. Kowhai are her favourite and she set about feeding her husband’s obsession, nurturing seedlings to plant out on the farm. She discovered Kim Williams, whose husband Guy is part of the Williams clan at Te Parae, was doing similar with seedlings, as was Kylie farming with husband Zac at Te Wharau.

Building New Foundations

Kim’s favourite plant is Lacebark while Kylie loves Ake Ake.

Collaborating was the best move they decided. Piwakawaka Plants was formed, shade houses built and thousands of high-quality plants they are producing are so impressive, nurseries are seeking them out. They are suppliers of the Greater Wellington Regional Council Akura depot and have supplied Watercare Groups for Riparian planting. They are often seen with trailers laden at Farmers Markets and garden fiestas as well as being open days on one of their farms on Sundays. The business name came from enjoying the inquisitive and playful piwakawaka birds in their potting shed on Gemma’s farm.

“I like to think it was my dad coming to check what we were up to,” says Gemma.

Piwakawaka Plants is a native nursery – think Griselinia, Mountain Flax, Harakeke, Cabbage Tree, Manuka, Kanuka, Ribbonwood, Totara, Kahikatea, Lemonwood ... the list goes on, but they also have a wide range of garden plants. Check out their Facebook page. It’s brimming with activity.

June 2023 marks the 26th anniversary of Moira Robertson-Brown being a Chartered Accountant. Moira has seen many changes in the way accounting has been done over this time.

Moira reminisces about her early days as a junior auditor with Price Waterhouse where there were about 20 1st and 2nd auditors sharing three computers primarily to do their timesheets, but also to check the newly formed email system and company learning pla orm.

“Few clients had their own email addresses in those days so it was a surprise to get one, unlike today,” she says. All audit work and files were prepared manually with five column paper. A pool of administration o cers typed up financial statements on a word processor which were printed in triplicate and carbon copied. All work was performed at the client’s o ces where the records were maintained. Fast forward to 2023 and the world has moved to that of automation! Every staff member at N MB1Z has their own computer, many with laptops, and email addresses. All of our tax returns and financial statement preparation is

automated. Most of our clients have also joined the world of automation with the use of software. Initially the automation was in the form of in-o ce computers with documents printed and files shared. However, the greatest change in the last 10 years has been the movement from servers to the online pla orms such as MYOB or ero. This means work can take place anywhere that there is an internet connection and we have a combination of staff working in the o ce and at home.

Change of course isn’t always limited to the way work is done, but also by personal circumstances. 2022 and 2023 were years of significant change for N MB1Z. With a retirement, an arrival of a baby and the ying of the coop, five new staff members were sought to join the team. The team now comprises of nine members:

Chartered Accountant - Moira Robertson-Brown

Insurance Risk Advisory

Stablehouse Design

Be assured not under insured

Life is expensive, right? And it seems to be ge ng more so. We think you’d agree!

There are several major ticket items that people can face buying during their life such as a house, business, or a farm, and owning a reliable vehicle. Making sure these assets are insured safely and ade uately is something roker Risk Advisor Sheryl Rooderkirk does for her clients.

Anyone can put an insurance policy in place however it is the risk management expertise that comes along with it that helps you ensure you have the right cover come claims time.

“I carefully consider the value of their dollars being spent and if the coverage would stand up in time of disaster or accident.” Something many people have sadly had to face in recent times in New ealand.

“Recent events have proven how important it is to seek professional and individualised insurance advice. People really need to talk to someone like me, who is attuned to the insurance industry.”

And attuned she is. Sheryl has been in and around the insurance business for almost 20 years and most recently has joined ICI ROKERWE Insurance

The garden you want, the plants you need

Risk Advisory. Sheryl is well known for her client focussed approach and personable skills, hence she was sought out to manage the company’s Wellington and Wairarapa o ce. She is a director and shareholder in the company and is based locally in Martinborough.

orn and raised in south Wairarapa, she attended Kahutara Primary and Wairarapa College. Starting work in Greytown, she moved between Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Wairarapa working in several different insurance roles, before deciding Martinborough was to be home for herself and -year-old daughter, Jorjah.

She knows her community well and loves the brokering side of insurance. Sheryl is an experienced risk advisor, her clients vary from retail, restaurants, caf s, small to medium enterprises, commercial property, the agricultural industry including farms and vineyards, lifestylers, and the domestic market.

If you are concerned about the cost of your insurance premiums get in touch with Sheryl to ensure that you are paying the right amount without compromising on cover.

Sarah Delmonte is leading a garden design business established by her mother Lyn Eglinton, and she cherishes the knowledge Lyn shares with her.

“She has forgotten more than I’ll ever know,” quips Sarah, who describes Lyn’s plant knowledge as “outrageous in its breadth and complexity.” It’s this knowledge and range of experience from the now five-women team that make Stablehouse Design, a seriously impressive service. They are the people to go to if you’re wanting to upgrade or establish a new garden or simply find a few beautiful plants. “A consultation with us about design; plant types and what you want out of your garden, is well worth doing before making any expensive mistakes.”

Sarah took over Stablehouse design in 2022. She left behind a corporate banking career in marketing and product development to study landscape design with the aim of learning on the job with her mother. Lyn is very much the “go to person” when it comes to choosing and sourcing plants and trees and Sarah is supported by Senior Landscaper, Janie Mahupuku, well-known for her small digger prowess. A former dairy farmer, she loves working the soil. Former Civil Engineer, and third year Landscape

Architecture student Michelle Ferreira is from South Africa, and has joined the team to learn more about exotic plants. Completing the team is Annie Wright, a Soil Scientist by profession, also wanting to get her hands into the dirt. Sarah is loving her new direction. “There are very few awful garden people”. They come from all walks of life and are looking for help to create their own small bit of paradise. Usually, they are looking for maximum impact, with minimal work. “Help with a small urban courtyard, through to a rambling country garden that needs a spruce up.” Lyn is famous for her sculptural architectural lines allowing the play of light and shadow. This knowledge, gleaned over decades, means Stablehouse Design can source right for the local conditions, at cost-effective prices, and in bulk when needed.

“We’re also well known for sourcing the unusual and hard to find,” says Sarah. One of their latest projects has been the community garden at the new Kandahar Village in Lansdowne. “As with any design we consider who will be using the garden, and here we’ll ensure there’s colour, fragrance, texture and year-round interest.” All the best things in a garden.

ernette innie Shapland and her digital administrator Tearoha EdmondsDwyer form a tight team of digital w hine at ReachDesign.

Tearoha joined ReachDesign in ctober last year, moving to airarapa from Auckland to be with her partner –they’re now pregnant with their first baby.

“Tearoha is the perfect fit for ReachDesign with a qualification in digital administration and immersion in tikanga M ori. She also challenges me,” innie laughs. “She spurs me on to learn te reo and reclaim my M ori heritage and helps me keep my imposter syndrome in check.” innie whakapapa’s to the airoa rohe of Ng ti Kahungunu, and Tearoha to Ng puhi.

The duo work with small business owners - M ori and Pakeha - to develop new digital systems for their businesses, document business processes, structures, and legal requirements.

Two women, who are the female arm of the long-standing Silverwood Architects firm, are at two ends of the service scale. Margaret Butler has been the Practice Manager for the past 21 years while Kerry Bryant is the new architecture graduate, four years in from her Victoria University studies. They are part of a team of seven – two registered architects, three graduates, a draughtsperson and Margaret.

‘Silverwoods,’ as it is affectionately known by both clients and those in the industry, has been around in various forms since 1877, when it began as Varnham and Rose.

From around 1950, Neil Inskter took over the practice, and in 1988 Darryl Silverwood was appointed director. Darryl’s son, James, joined him as a graduate architect in 2010. The building, which houses Silverwood Architects on Church Street, is equally entrenched in Masterton history being the home of Dr Archer Hosking and later the Tankersley family. Renovated within to cater for modern purposes, it retains the olde world charm of a turnof-the-century villa.

Margaret is very much the ‘glue’ which keeps the busy architectural practice running smoothly.

Explaining she does “a bit of everything,” she works closely with Darryl, consults with clients and contractors, and oversees all administration. In two decades, she’s seen a lot of change.

“Drawings were all hand drawn on large A1 sheets and we had huge machines to cope with the photocopying.” There’s large open-plan rooms these days for the computer suites using CAD drawing but there’s still quiet escape areas where creativity can be developed. Margaret and husband, Richard, raised three boys in Masterton and she loves the community. Her local knowledge is valuable to the practice.

Kerry Bryant was born in Oamaru and studied in Wellington where she achieved her master’s in architecture. “I’ve always loved buildings and architecture. Dad was an electrician, and I spent a lot of time on building sites with him.” She comes to Silverwood Architects from Palmerston North. She and partner Matthew Sale live in a 1905 Masterton villa which they are slowly renovating.

Kerry was excited to learn that the Tankersleys, who lived in the Silverwood practice house, are ancestors of hers.

Gold administration team

McKenzie’s Electrical 2000 Ltd is a highly successful company based in Carterton and operating throughout Wairarapa, doing domestic, commercial, and industrial electrical work.

Owned by Russell and Carrollyn Keys, they currently employ 12 staff including themselves and four apprentices.

What sets them aside from regular businesses is the way they treat the team like extended family and involve them in decision making that includes choices on whom they employ.

When Melissa Napier applied to join the team as an administrator in 2020, apart from being interviewed by Carrollyn, she was ‘checked out’ by the remaining staff and a consensus reached that she’d fit in.

Cassie Keys has come back to the admin team this year after being in Australia and working in administration roles. “To be a successful business, you all need to get along with each other – it’s better to encourage a tight supportive team,” says Carrollyn. She and Russell recognise that their employees are their biggest asset and need to be cared for.

Melissa is the Administration Manager co-ordinating the running of the office,

as well as special projects.

Melissa is highly respected for her business acumen and ability to understand the different compliance issues that surround businesses in today’s world. Cassie has returned to the family business and works with Melissa to keep things running smoothly.

Her personal interest is in maintaining the high bar set for Health and Safety in the company, along with data entry.

Carrollyn does the financial side of the business and fills in for Melissa and Cassie when required, and enjoys helping clients where she can.

Coupled with fostering a family environment, McKenzie’s Electrical has a strong commitment to Health and Safety.

Melissa is quick to point out the company has reached Gold Status –putting it in the 90 per cent range for safety.

“We are proud to have achieved Site Wise Gold status and Avetta Accreditation. Avetta delivers assurance that your business is working with safe, qualified, and socially responsible contractors and suppliers.”

Your all-important EAR

“Hearing loss is more common than people think,” declares Lia Zamora of Specsavers Audiology. “The best way to spot it is by having your hearing checked.” She shares that Specsavers includes a free hearing check with their eye check for the over 40s.

“You have nothing to lose, and heaps to gain, if you have your hearing screened.” Lia is all about raising hearing awareness to the community. “Good hearing promotes healthy brain ageing. Studies show that the use of hearing aids slows age-related memory loss by 75%. Good hearing is important to people of all ages. Unaddressed hearing loss has huge lifestyle consequences. It can impair language development in babies, cause reading and learning delays in school children, reduce work performance in adults, affect cognitive, balance and memory issues in older adults.” The ear has a lot to answer for!

Lia is a full member of the New Zealand Audiological Society. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology and a master’s degree in Clinical Audiology. It has been 18 years since she started practising audiology and she continues to love every aspect of the discipline.

“Listening to people’s inspiring life experiences is such a perk,” says Lia.

Rahui Coastal Loop

“There’s so much wisdom to learn from the people I meet.” She enjoys getting to know her clients and is always thrilled whenever her clients share stories of how wearing hearing aids has improved their way of life.

When Lia, a Masterton resident, learned that Specsavers Audiology was coming to New Zealand, she grabbed the opportunity to partner with Specsavers in her home region. “Through Specsavers Audiology, I have been able to provide accessible hearing care, and affordable hearing aid technology to the Wairarapa community.”

Let’s hear from one of Lia’s many happy customers:

Being an existing customer of Specsavers for my spectacles, I decided to give the audiology side a go. The result was the best experience ever. A very thorough test followed with a strong focus on my specific needs – music, verbal, typical background noises, small crowd, what is important to me? And, this time the price was in the middle of the range, which differed from my earlier experiences. A week or so later I was back with Lia where the hearing aids were setup, including the Bluetooth connection. Then the follow-up... Added a further setting here and away went a happy customer. Well done, Lia. Regards, Barry.

See, hear.

E-bike adventures on wild coastal roads

Lucinda Maunsell and her out-there adventuresome biking retreat, ‘Rahui Coastal Loop,’ is riding a wave of success. Increasing numbers of people looking for something different to do, love the idea of head for the hills on bicycles and get views of the ocean to boot. She’s finding many visitors are people who have never been to Wairarapa before. The winner of the NZI Rural Women’s Business Award in the ‘Love of the Land’ category, Lucinda continually upgrades her fleet of e-bikes, currently numbering nine. She offers a one or three-day bike ride. The route is a 65km loop over tar sealed and gravel roads, coastal cruising, and some hills. One night is spent at the cycling base, Rahui, and the other at the coast. Lucinda’s father, Bill, helps with the business where needed, often supporting them on the last slog up to his hut on Day three. “The views are worth it,” people gasp at the top.

Accommodation at Rahui is ‘The Sow’s Ear,’ a converted derelict farm building saved from demolition. It’s still rustic, but the stylish fresh white interior, and cosy fire with no television, internet, or cell reception has people loving the wilderness feel.

Rahui Gardens is nestled on the winding Tinui Valley Road and was created by Bill and Jill Maunsell, who years ago opened to the public. These days it’s also home to daughter Lucinda, and her daughter, Lilah. Apart from bike riding, guests can simply rest in the whare, feed the ducks on the large pond, wander the beautiful gardens, and greet Sheldon, the friendly kune kune pig, who comes grazing along the fence line. There’s also Snoopy the dog; cats, Nuts and Schnitzel; Bert and Ernie, the Swiss valet sheep (Google the cutest sheep in the world), Midnight the black chicken and her turkey babies, and a peacock.

The Maunsell family have a rich history in the area dating back to 1869. Rahui is the back block of the original 20,000 acre Tinui station. The majestic rock outcrop at Tinui, named Mt Maunsell, boasts the site of the first cross which was erected to commemorate the fallen soldiers of WW1.

Lucinda was raised at Rahui and buoyed by a lust for adventure she set off overseas. When she returned to New Zealand, she looked at Rahui with fresh eyes and could see the potential. She decided to sprinkle her thrill-seeking spirit here. The Coastal Loop was born.

Great accounting firms unite with Andie at the helm

Chartered accountant, Andie Henson has a lot to be excited about. She’s the new Director of dpa Chartered Accountants and was pivotal in the recent merger between Enumerate Chartered Accountants and dpa in Masterton.

Andie had been working for dpa Chartered Accountants in Taupo and it was aer her move to Masterton, the company suggested she establish a Wairarapa branch.

Aer a successful launch in December 2020 and establishing a client base from Perry Street, Masterton, Allan Newman from Enumerate in Kuripuni contacted her and asked if she’d like to “team up”.

Allan is currently working as a Consultant Accountant in the new pracce, taking on the name dpa Chartered Accountants.

Other team members are Client Partner, David Castles and accountants Michael Wald and Sarah Degerholm, supported by India Beijen who manages the admin side of the business but is about to make the move to the “dark side,” as they like to joke, and will assume a posion in accounng.

To have reached directorship at Andie’s age is quite the achievement, and she feels confident heading up the new business.

“I’m able to glean from a team of experienced professionals, nothing has

really changed for clients, we’re all sll here just now under one roof.”

Andie returned to Wairarapa in 2017 with her husband, Marcus, a livestock manager, and her two children. Marnborough born and bred, it was a coming home she relished.

Andie discovered her love for numbers in her early 20s and has worked in banking and accounng firms while she studied, compleng her post-graduate study in Chartered Accounng.

“We are extremely fortunate to have

an exceponally talented team within the Kuripuni office and the support of dpa in Taupo which is a mul-faceted accounng operaon.

“dpa is well known for thinking outside the square and for its strong focus on business advisory as well as tax compliance.”

dpa promotes a supporve and encouraging team environment, and aer working in a sole posion in recent years from her Masterton office, Andie is enjoying the jovial banter and camaraderie which comes from being surrounded by team members in a physical sense, rather than online from the Taupo office. So, plans for the future? Andie muses. “To connue the excellent service that Enumerate was providing, whilst offering new clients a hub of experse provided by personable and team focused professionals.”

Successfully presenting your service or product

The best design is one you don’t even notice.

It’s when a brand is instantly recognisable and the name or further details about the product, or service, are just helpful information.

If you want to buy a Coca Cola – you recognise it instantly, don’t you?

Beth Rooney of Enable Design says successful marketing is all about consistent messaging, colour, and design – and this is where she comes in. She’s an ideas whiz and knows her way around social media and e-commerce, using it to the client’s advantage.

“Keep it simple and figure out your unique selling point,” is Beth’s basic message.

“How a company, or product, presents itself is vital to its success.”

With husband, Blair, they have transformed themselves into a successful design business.

Six years ago they were both frantically working from laptops wherever they could rest, now they’re in an established office in the Wairarapa.

Beth has a natural affinity for marketing and social media and went on to study Communications at Massey University.

Keep it simple and figure out your unique selling point, is Beth’s basic message. How a company, or product, presents itself is vital to its success.”

She had known Blair from primary school days, re-connected ten years later, and married in 2018. They have a two-year-old daughter, Isla.

There’s lots of Enable Design’s ideas around Wairarapa. Early creations were within Homegrown Butchery at Kuripuni, and Kate’s Kombucha. In Greytown, they have worked with Mrs Blackwell’s Bookshop, the cycle shop, and Saunder’s Shoes.

Research shows 81% percent of people will research online before they buy or seek a service. E-commerce websites are increasingly popular, and these avenues must ultimately have ease of operation – as well as looking good.

Enable Design has created successful websites for local businesses including Stitch Boutique, Ranui Essentials, Lorna Potter and Farm Focus to name a few. Enable Design builds brands and websites your customers will love.

The land where the native plants grow

“It’s taken me a while, but I really know this place now,” reflects Tracey Harlen who lovingly sweeps her hand, across the land where the native plants are thriving. Norfolk Road Nursery and its thousands of native plants, in various stages of growth, stretch impressively in all directions in various stages of growth. Lacebark, Ribbonwood, Pseudopanax, Pittosporum, – know these names? If you don’t, Norfolk Road staff will help you.

Tracey and landscaper husband, Steven, purchased the business early in 2021.

“We were ripe to promote and develop it.” For Steven, he was in his natural habitat already, with a formidable list of experience including establishing a garden landscape company in Wellington, being former head gardener at the British High Commission residence, and studying at the UK Royal Horticultural Society Gardens in Wisley.

For Tracey, she stepped away from a corporate life as a barrister and solicitor and as an investigator and principal advisor to the Chief Ombudsman. She has also been an advisor to the Ombudsman Offices in the Pacific, and to the UN Development Fund for Timor-Leste.

But it’s the plants which attract Tracey now. She loves the aspect of her new life, the nurturing of native plants one

precious seed, or cutting, at a time. The nursery had been growing natives for 30 years when Tracey and Steven came along.

They have thrown their collective skills into the business and as a result, it has become a nursery and horticultural education centre. It’s a hub for seed collection and propagation and for gently nurturing those plants into a state where they are ready to go to customers.

Tracey can be often found huddled at her computer beside the mounds of potting mix, attempting to set up a new customer base, or where and how to access certain plant species. Staff numbers have already risen to around 20, depending on the season, and Tracey is proud of highly-skilled staff who are responsible for identifying and locating Wairarapa eco-sourced seed and plant cuttings to ensure there is adequate stock to meet demand.

Tracey has been nurturing connections with landowners too, who allow native seeds to be collected. “We are so grateful to residents who bring us seeds too. The demand is high.

Along with the public, the nursery’s customers include landscapers, businesses, vineyard owners, rural farmers, community groups, and trusts, as well as local and central government agencies.

Exercise physiologist creates app to help strengthen women

Ella Hayes is a qualified Exercise Physiologist and is a vision of health. She walks her talk and has an infectious enthusiasm for life, coupled with a desire to share with others. She created her business, Lift with Ella, in 2020 with the aim of encouraging women how to live and eat healthily and to carry out a regular exercise routine. She likes the words reflecting the lifting of body, mind, and spirit. “I wish I had someone like me to guide me through those hard teenage years. It would have been awesome,” she reflects.

Ella’s ‘Mums and Bubs’ fitness classes at the Redstar Clubrooms in Colombo Road, Masterton, have attracted many young women. She caters for all levels of ability and readiness and the camaraderie is a positive off-shoot of the classes. Ella originally held other bootcamps for people ranging from teenagers to accomplished sportspeople and those simply wanting to strengthen themselves in body and mind. However, many of her clients are heading to her new app ‘Lift with

Ella’ which Ella has created this year. This allows people to exercise in their own time, at their own rate. She will initially meet with the client, or have a phone conversation, and will then tailormade the exercise regime to suit the individual. “It’s all about taking the almighty first step, and then getting it done. It all flows from there.”

Ella loved her early childhood years in Lower Hutt and thrived when her family moved to Melbourne. A natural performer, she sang and performed in stage shows. After time in the UK, she returned to Wellington to study. Her interest in health and wellness had grown when caring for herself while travelling. Coming to Wairarapa, she initially worked in a Masterton gym. “Lockdown happened and it became a brainstorming time for me.

‘Lift with Ella’ was imagined.”

During the winter months she’s the strapping and exercise physiologist for schools and sports teams. Her services are as vast and varied just like the people who seek them.

Jane and her team are all registered osteopaths and ACC treatment providers and have trained for four years at university to be able to accurately diagnose and effectively treat pain and injury. Jane has been in private practice for 20 years.

Describing osteopaths as “body detectives”, Jane says they take a detailed case-history and examine the overall body, to understand the patterns of misalignment, muscular imbalance, and joint restriction that have led to a problem. Treatment consists of hands-on techniques which encourage muscles, joints, and connective tissue to release tension hence restoring the body to a state of balance and alignment.

Based at The Core, in Nelson Crescent, Carterton, Jane has gathered a highly qualified team.

“We now have a great balance of diverse skills and experience and can effectively meet the demands of patients, with time to diagnose, treat and educate them to be proactive in their health”.

The team are from all over. Jane is Melbourne-born and raised, Rebecca Hancock is from Auckland, Andre Kuleza is from the UK, and Kane Falconer from Christchurch. Bernie Nannestad is the Practice Manager.

Jane established Wairarapa Osteopathy when she moved to Carterton in 2013. Previously she had her own practice in Ngaio, Wellington. Word got out quickly that there was an osteopath in town, and she ended up setting up a home clinic. She worked happily as a sole trader for several years while raising two children. Then when the patient demand prompted her to expand, she went looking for like-minded osteopaths.

Moving to The Core has been a fantastic move according to Jane. They have established great inter-referral relationships with the other allied-health businesses and with the Strength Nation gym.

Upholstering favourite furniture

Kath Wilkie sees her work as a gift –re-upholstering people’s treasured items and giving them a new lease on life. Unsurprisingly “The Repair Shop” is her favourite television programme. A passionate advocate of recycling, she can often be seen trawling second-hand shops eyeing up bargains. Many people have seen her work and enthusiastically bring items they wish refurbished.

“People can’t believe what we can do – some times resurrecting what looks beyond repair - and then it continues to be a much-treasured piece with a family story.” Kath gets help from the talented volunteers at the Masterton Men’s Shed. “They are my godsend. They will refurbish faded timber or re-build missing pieces.”

During a recent upholstery job of a rolled arm lounge suite, cherished by a family for decades, Kath discovered scribbled on the wooden structure the signature “H. S. Davis, Oct 1928. Scoullan Co. Wellington.” This was an early 20th century furniture maker.

“Many clients love older furniture because they are unique and can be more comfortable than modern massproduced creations.”

Kath is a former physical education teacher which, following an injury, prompted her to re-assess what type of work she’d like to do next. Forever the creative, she began mending and fixing furniture. Her mother, Judy Jeffrey, is a qualified tailor and the pair have been teaching upholstery classes for over 20 years. It suits Kath beautifully, marrying her teaching experience with her creative side.

Pairing books and readers after years of bookselling

Sue’s face will be familiar to many, and she often gets asked, “where have I seen you before?”

Maybe it was in one of Masterton bookshops – Hedley’s, and latterly Paper Plus Masterton.

Sue recently retired from Paper Plus after 14 years of enthusiastic service, working to the personal adage ‘matching the right book for the right need’.

With a total of 25 years’ experience in bookselling, the genuine love, care, and dedication to book buyers could not be forgotten easily, she decided.

“Even though I have left the retail space behind, I couldn’t desert the faithful, and I needed a place to continue to recommend and review – so Read by Reid has been born.”

“In my heart, I am a bookseller, always will be, and that is the seed that has grown my new venture.”

She will be the messenger of books –the conduit between the keen reader and what books are available to satisfy them. Sue’s website is the ‘face’ of her new business and aligns with her Instagram account as a platform to showcase book titles. Sue also offers herself to book groups, as a speaker to community groups, and she has already

negotiated with Hedley’s B ooks to host their new instore book club.

Sue believes emphatically that bookselling is communication; sharing with buyers why a certain book is important, or why it is needed in the bookish landscape. Sue reminds that books are not cheap, and so there needs to be trust in a good bookseller to get the match right.

“I have built a rapport with customers over the years, leading them through to the best-suited choice. Sometimes it is the ‘new and shiny, hot off the press,’ other times it is a ‘pearl’ that has aged through time. Listening to what your reader wants is paramount.”

“Book stores feature my reviews, because at the heart of me is always a passion to drive sales and support the local book industry.” New Zealand booksellers are community hubs and despite the challenges of recent years, Sue says they are thriving and deserve commitment to shop locally.

Sue was born in Hobart and at the end of 2023, will have the honour of saying she has lived equal years in both Australia and New Zealand. As a result, her knowledge of both country’s literature is profound. If you don’t believe us, check in with Sue yourself.

Caring For You And Your Health: Waiscan Ultrasound

Heather Armstrong is one of those inspirational women who keeps on learning and keeps on going from strength to strength.

She set up her business Waiscan Ultrasound about nine years ago, after training for over three years with Melbourne’s Monash University, gaining her Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound, and becoming a sonographer.

Waiscan was the first private clinic of its type in Wairarapa. As a local girl she’s grateful to be able to provide a diagnostic service to the people of Wairarapa, saving them a long and expensive journey to a larger radiology centre for an ultrasound.

“Sonography involves using ultrasound scanners with sound waves, to take images of internal parts of the body,” she explains. It can see images of your pelvic organs, breasts, abdominal organs

such as liver, kidneys and gallbladder, prostate and testicles, all stages of your pregnancy, legs and arms, lumps and blood vessels, and even the carotid artery in your neck.

Using up to date “amazing” technology, Heather’s assessment of each client is sent to a radiologist, who writes a report to the referring health provider. Heather has a long-time relationship with her reporting radiologist.

Heather came to sonography after 20 years of being an operating theatre nurse. While “it was time to change and grow”, her earlier qualification in nursing as well as her years of nursing experience was a fantastic grounding for her new role. She is able to take a holistic approach to patient care, is proactive when further investigation is required, and is a strong patient advocate.

Since her career change, Heather’s been

in demand as a locum sonographer both nationally and internationally and has worked within Selina Sutherland Hospital. Three years ago, she moved her business to its current premises - the one stop shop for health needs at 5 Park Street, Masterton.

To have a scan at Waiscan you will need a referral from your doctor, physio, chiropractor, podiatrist, or other health care provider. There is a charge for a scan which can be paid by a health insurance company, ACC or privately. Other options are available.

Here’s just a couple of the testimonials Heather has received from clients: “Thank you for making that so comfortable for me.” “Thank you for being so patient and understanding.”

Men and women, young and old, appreciate Heather’s calm and confident manner, born from nursing under pressure.

Whether it’s following brand guidelines, designing vehicle signage, re-designing a logo or creating a leaflet, Jo has a plethora of knowledge and ideas to draw on.

As a business owner herself, she knows the importance of connecting with a client and this is reflected in her unique designs.

“Jo is a great designer who listened to our original ideas and bought them to life with her own creative input. It is always great to work with people that you can get along with, it makes the process easy.”

We understand that every person, learning style and level of understanding can be so di erent. So, this year we have a key focus on

identifying how each client interprets and absorbs information so that we can ensure what’s presented to them is tailored to their individual learning style. Partnered with a discussion about future strategic directions, goals, and cash ow projections - now we have a recipe for YOUR success.

We’re all about giving back too. If you hop on over to our social media pages, you’ll see that all our clients are in the draw to win our client spotlight. Every month, a client is randomly selected and highlighted on our socials, nothing like some free advertising! Each winner also receives a sweet prize which is usually a voucher from another of our amazing clients! We’re all about sharing the love here.

Staying true to our Innovative core value, there’s been a lot of work going on behind the scenes to build a client portal which is being rolled out as we speak. This personalised space is designed to be your go-to spot for everything accounting related. It’s like having your own personal accounting hub, with everything you need right at your ngertips. You’ll nd everything from upcoming tax payments (so you can incorporate them into your cash ow) to goal tracking and helpful guides to nalised documentation such as Financial Statements and tax returns and so, so much more. The development of this portal was extremely important to us. We don’t want to be the accountants that are seen as the ‘necessary evil’. We want to be the trusted advisors that are part of your team, and the

portal is just another way that we can make your life easier by having everything accounting related in one space. The goal tracking is also a great re ection tool. Goals are a constantly moving target for us and our clients, but it’s important to set, review and re ect on what you’ve achieved and what did/didn’t work well.

So, now that you’ve got the lowdown on what we’re all about, it’s time to meet the crew! Right now, our team is made up of four wāhine. Our three directors Clementine Kumeroa, Jade Williams, and Melanie Edwards as well as our superstar administrator Tuesday Brown. Tuesday has recently joined us after we grossly underestimated how valuable it would be to have an amazing admin to keep things running smoothly. We know having Tuesday on board will be a game changer, taking care of the pesky admin will allow us to focus more on our clients and core work. We’re so excited to see what this lifesaver will bring to our team. She’ll be the friendly person you get when you rst reach out to us.

If this all sounds like a bit of you, then get in touch! We can catch up for a kōrero, shout you a beverage & see if we’ll be a good t for each other. We still have spaces available for new clients, although the available space is decreasing fast! It’s extremely vital that we always maintain or exceed our current quality of service. This is our priority as we need to ensure our clients receive the top-notch service they deserve. Therefore, when we reach our own limit, we’ll be advising our clients and we’ll be on the lookout for some fantastic sta to join the team.

A British love affair with a UK flavour

If Walkers Crisps, Jacobs Crackers, McVities Digestives, Jaffa Cakes ring bells for you – all washed down with a cup of Yorkshire Tea, then you really need to look at Helen Murphy’s on-line store, Wai-UK, live from July 2023.

Helen has a love of all things-British, especially many of its foodstuffs, and has been gathering items for personal use, for years. Many people exclaim delight at finding what she has, which often gives them a taste of home, and she’s decided to turn it into a business.

She and husband, Keith (yes, he’s English-born and recently became a New Zealand citizen) are heading to the UK mid-2023 on a shopping trip to gather as many unique British tastes as they can. Mainly it will be food items she’ll be offering, but Helen says she can’t resist icons like miniature London buses or Beefeater salt and pepper shakers – just to add to the mix.

Helen is New Zealand-born. Her mother, from Wolverhampton, met her Kiwi husband when he was on his OE in England. With Helen’s maiden name

being Grantham, she laughs at the likeness to the Downton Abbey lineage. A TV series she devoured. Helen’s first time to the UK was in 2017 where her husband-to-be, Keith, was introducing her to his family. They were married in April 2022, and are incorporating their honeymoon this year in their 2023 trip.

“It really has been love at first sight with the UK and its iconic identities and the idea of setting up a British store has simmered along until Helen and Keith were settled in Carterton.

“It’s time,” she declares. While it’s purely on-line from July 2023, Helen is on the hunt for a shop premises, in Carterton. Earthquake strengthening has resulted in a shortage of available retail space in the town, but she’s hopeful something will come up. Keep an eye out for the Union Jack when she finds something!

The Wai-UK Store promises to be brimming with delicacies and you’ll find Helen and Keith at Farmer’s Markets from August.

Meet Belinda Pratt, local award winning photographer who blends her love of people and animals with her talent behind the lens, and is now shifting her focus to weddings.

“Weddings are incredibly special occasions, full of optimism and love,” she enthuses.

“All the energy and intimacy make them a real privilege to photograph.” Belinda is well known for her ability to capture the essence of each love story with stunning detail and raw emotion.

Belinda has been taking photos since she was old enough to hold a camera, and it wasn’t long before she owned her first one at 10. Starting out as an equestrian sports photographer, it’s been a natural and gradual progression to establishing her own photography business.

Belinda’s work has often been a re ection of her own passions, with pet and family portraits, as well as school photography remaining a proud part of her por olio. However in 2022, her passion for wedding photography took centre stage.

“Wairarapa has an array of unique and exceptional wedding venues, and the scenery draws many to the area to get married.” She has been called to all corners of Wairarapa and also works out of the area, where her work has been admired and recognised.

“Just like the couples themselves, no two weddings are alike, and nothing beats the feeling of delivering that final gallery, full of such cherished memories.”

Belinda adores her Wairarapa base, the family farm just out of Carterton. She lives there with her husband and two children - ultimately her biggest passion of all. “My life continues to be my greatest source of inspiration”

Nurse-led, casual, and urgent care medical service filling the gaps

These days when it comes to getting sick, seeking medical treatment can be as sickening as the ailment.

If you can’t find a doctor, or need medical care now, First Health and Wellness may be your answer.

First Health and Wellness is a community-fee-for-service-funded clinic in Lansdowne’s First Street in Masterton and provides walkin appointments, after-hours, and emergency services allowing people to access health care without waiting. It provides emergency care, routine medical services such as cervical smears, blood pressure checks, driver’s medicals, ECG tests and all ACC injuries. Eventually, the Trust aims to expand the clinic’s services and run an outreach service for rural communities.

A nurse practitioner or doctor are usually available for virtual consultations, and to prescribe medications, if needed. Patients who visit the clinic continue their relationship with their regular GPs, and will be referred to them or a specialist, if something serious is discovered.

“Our aim is to be complementary to medical centres and many people are referred from other centres,” says founder and registered nurse, Trish Wilkinson. Charges are similar to visiting a medical centre.

An old-school, seriously experienced nurse, Trish rolled up her sleeves in 2016 and with the help of trustees, public donations, and medical colleagues, she set up Manaaki Ki Wairarapa Community Trust. First Health and Wellness is the business arm of this trust.

Her aim is to relieve stress for both patients and the Wairarapa Hospital Emergency Department.

Trish was head of Wairarapa Hospital’s Emergency Department for five years and has been a locum practice nurse in many Wairarapa medical practices. She has heard it all.

“Patients often air frustrations about not being able to find a doctor or the long waiting times either for an appointment or an emergency situation.”

There are seven medical practices in Wairarapa, including three in Masterton. All have a near full patient register.

Thanks to fundraising efforts, the Trust was able to secure the clinic premises at 10 First Street which, co-incidentally housed First Street Medical back in the nineties.

“The Government has been saying we need to do things differently when it comes to medical services – so we thought, we’d do just that.” Trish says.

Feel good interior design and homeware

Established in 2016, The Whole Nine Yards lives up to its name and then some.

Owners Sophie McCoy and Julie Tulloch, along with Andrea Johnston, the third cog of the wheel, are in their element helping to create wonderful spaces in your home.

Sophie and Julie have worked together for many years, raising children and consolidating their interior design expertise before branching out under their own banner. Together, they hand pick the goodies that fill the store - items to transform a house into a home.

The girls are not into minimalism, and they love colour and texture. Soft, floaty, autumnal tones are today’s go-to colours, exuding a natural, calming vibe. The racks of options for curtains, window treatments, wallpaper, and furniture upholstery extend as far as the eye can see and beg for your time. “Come in for an hour and browse,” Julie suggests.

Julie is usually out seeing clients in their homes to discuss window dressings, wall colours, or décor pieces to finish

a space. The store offers a free inhome measure and quote for window treatments.

Sophie is on hand in store to discuss your furniture needs - sofa styles, dining tables, chairs, sizings, or fabrics. Sophie will happily provide home consultations to ensure you get exactly what you need.

Andrea is ‘Man Friday’ in the team, turning her hand to most things. She’s front of house, looking after customer needs with care and insight. Andrea has a background in retail and design experience including jewellery, art, and the design and manufacture of footwear.

Customers come into the store from as far away as Hawke’s Bay and Wellington. The girls have an online following too from all around the country.

“People message and we courier the goodies direct to their door.”

Keep supporting small businesses and pop in to visit the team at The Whole Nine Yards. Check them out on Facebook or Instagram.

A Kiwi, an Irishman and a vineyard full of love

On a boutique vineyard on The Loopline, north of Masterton, there’s fabulous things happening.

Amongst the vines, Nicky Geary, husband, Brian and their 12-year-old daughter, Órlaith are offering a venue which is attracting people from all over. When Women in Business went to catch up with Nicky, a couple from Perth were sipping wine on the deck. Next car was travellers from Brisbane.

Le Grá Vineyard and Winery, on just 2.7ha, is producing four varieties of wine – Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. There’s also a tasty range of jams and chutneys made with produce from their land and neighbourhood donations. But that’s not all. They have turned their special place into a venue for weddings, birthdays, family events, and for summer public events and concerts.

Le Grá’s calendar of events begins with the Spring Fling (October), Folk in the Vines (November), Gathering on the Green (February), and Last of the Summer Wine (April). A Bed & Breakfast accommodation is available along with self-contained campervan parking.

“It’s all about sharing and we feel so lucky to have found this piece of paradise. Our ‘Spring Fling’ was a dream

Putting your best hand forward

come true. I looked out and saw a sea of faces, people who have made us welcome and are now friends. It feels like an extended family, an inclusive feeling of community.”

Family is important to the Gearys as they raise their daughter with a rare medical condition. Órlaith can sing and dance along with the bands and “live her best life”. There’s also the miniature schnauzer, Tadgh (yes, another Irish name) and he’s the chief “meet and greet” dog as well as bird scarer. There’s a giant chess set, corn hole toss, volleyball, and much more for kids of all ages, so although they have the best of wines on offer for the grown-ups – it’s all about family here.

Nicky met Brian, a lad from County Cork, in a pub in Ireland. She was raised in Wairarapa and left to travel the world. Nearly seven years on and thinking about coming home she thought she’d visit Ireland first. Nicky and Brian came to New Zealand, initially to the Bay of Plenty. In 2019, they set their eyes on The Loopline vineyard and they knew they were home. To keep a piece of Ireland in his heart, they re-named their patch ‘Le Grá’ in Gaelic means “With love.”

Go and fall in love with Le Grá – we bet you will.

A beautifully manicured hand can make you feel so much more presentable.

Our hands are the busiest parts of our bodies and always on show. Why not have them looking good?

Stephanie Watene is a qualified beauty therapist and when doing her training at UCOL in Masterton, she found her interest tended towards nails, so she also learned nail technology.

Stephanie suggests regular use of cuticle oil and a quality hand moisturiser, is a good start to nail health, but when it comes to making them look good, she is the professional to seek out.

Stephanie says the nail industry is an enjoyable social job. “It’s important to keep up with the latest nail trends so I can share with clients.”

I like being creative and I pour my energy into a beautiful set of nails. Nails are about individuality and expressing yourself.”

While many like a more intense set of nails, which she is well known for creating, many also want a simple nude set.

“There’s something satisfying sending a client out with a beautiful set of nails.”

Nail services offered include soft gel extensions, polygel extensions, gels, and builder gels.

Stephanie has added to her skills by studying under Selena Watt, who trains through Designer Nails, a NZ company.

“Selena has so much knowledge of the industry, so I felt very lucky to be trained by her.”

Stephanie’s artistic side has followed through to her daughter, Madison, who at age nine, decorated the wall in her mother’s nail clinic with a fusion of flowers. The clinic is in a room within Madison Hair Studio, owned by husband, Jordon Watene.

The name Lincoln Lounge Nails is the nod to their son. So, the family is covered.

Stephanie enjoys working with Jordon although admits their busy lives, and salons, do not allow much time to catch up.

They will be busier than ever soon, when they move to new and larger premises. Watch this space.

Celebrating 5 years in the Wairarapa

In June this year, RIVAL Accounting is excited to be celebrating 5 years in the region. Emma is a foundation staff member and last year became an Associate Partner alongside Director Simon Moor.

Empowering people to live a healthy life

Are you happy about your health?

Been feeling out of sorts lately?

An in-depth contemplation with a health coach can often open your eyes to ways in which you can make yourself feel be er.

Lisa Burch’s health coaching sessions vary from simply a one-off chat to a series of sessions to help you establish your health goals. “I’m not about trying to fix people” she says. “I’m all about empowering people to help themselves. Coaching fills the gap between simply existing and thriving. We are all in control, we just sometimes need help to realise that.” isa describes her coaching as a way of looking forward, unlocking people’s health potential.

In , she established Bloom Health Coaching, a business aimed to guide people into a healthier lifestyle, both mentally and physically. “As we age, it becomes increasingly obvious that we must be responsible for our own health. Relying on medication is not the answer. We must consider our own approach to living.” isa says this does not translate to being idyllically happy all the time that’s not realistic but along with healthy food, moving our bodies, and connection with friends, family, and the natural world, we can lead a positive life. All things we to

know, right Sometimes we need a li le prod. isa speaks from personal experience running through life, working in a corporate job, running a hotel, training as a chef, and struggling to control her alcohol use. When she and husband, Ray, purchased a pub, initially it didn’t seem a problem. Worried about her drinking though, and with her doctor’s encouragement, she researched help via the internet coming across a coaching programme developed by Annie Grace, author of “This Naked Mind.” isa stopped drinking alcohol and discovered a joy and vitality she had forgo en. “It was a eureka moment.” Her decision to live more healthily was also prompted by her husband’s diabetes which he successfully managed to eradicate by adopting a low carbohydrate diet. Wanting to share this with others, Lisa completed health coaching certifications built on the back of her Degree in Anthropology, including advanced qualifications in metabolic health, neuroscience and mental health.

She especially enjoys working with people interested in changing their relationship with alcohol or improving their metabolic health.

A fashion store strong on personal service and sustainability

When Dani Burkhart studied Design and Fashion in Tauranga after leaving hometown Masterton, she had ideas of moving abroad. But the fashion world was vibrant in New Zealand, and she immediately made a mark. She won Supreme Designer Award at graduation and established her own label “My Boyfriend’s Back” which she showed at the 2013 Fashion Week, and then stocked retailers across Australasia. This all, beginning at the tender age of 17.

However, nine years ago, when returning to Wairarapa and meeting husband, Johnny, she sunk her artistic skills into building a retail fashion store, Hebe. She has moved twice within the Kuripuni shopping village and is now in a brand-new premises in the heart of the Poplars Business Park, west of Masterton.

Hebe’s, illuminated fluorescent pink sign can be seen for miles. Its entrance is enchanting with its pedestrian entrance via a gateway, edged by manicured gardens, or from the dedicated customer carparking area. It sits as the showcase for a purposebuilt building Dani and Johnny have constructed to house, not only her business, but also his equipment at the rear. A fisherman, and sometime engineer, he needs lots of storage. The dark charcoal building exterior juxtaposes beautifully with the white interior of the store.

It’s like coming into the light, full of wonderful clothing. There are sunglasses and a selection of jewellery to augment the garments. Dani carefully buys for her store with her loyal customers in mind. “It’s curated. Everything is handpicked and considered”, she says.

She has carved out a name for herself offering a vast range of NZ designed garments with a sound ethical history. This ethos carries to some Australian labels too. Sustainability is her utmost consideration though, where the material has originated and who has made it.

“Behind every brand is a designer and a maker and we are finding customers are asking these ethical questions often.”

She sells from the store, where people still want the experience of trying on and getting expert advice, and she also has a great online store, with a click and collect service. Dani has three children and employs three women, who all do part-time hours to fit within their other life requirements. There’s Brianna Parks, Tiana Allan, and Kristal Flood, all who know the fashion industry inside out. Come and ask them about the exciting labels like Kowtow, Commoners, Remain, Stolen Girlfriends’ Club, Camilla+Marc, and Assembly. It will be hard to leave empty-handed!

Carefully curated bookshop reflects owner

Brenda Channer’s life would make a good book. She was born in Eureka, California. Her birth was literally a ‘eureka moment’, so to speak. She’s had several names since, many varied occupations, and now is the owner of a bookshop – a long-held dream and she’s revelling in it.

Living in Martinborough since 2006, Brenda had mulled over the idea of the town needing a bookshop. Deborah Coddington beat her to it, and so Brenda offered her services as an inveterate book lover, in any which way she could.

As it was being established, she introduced herself to Deborah and when the books were on the shelves and the former Campbell’s Garage had morphed into a beautiful boutique bookstore, Deborah looked up the enthusiastic Brenda.

The result was a close-knit team who created a professional business where serious readers and those ‘just passing’ will go to seek out a special book.

From day one, Martinborough Bookshop, has taken the form of a specially curated book haven, and those in the know can see each book is carefully considered.

The range of cards and stationery are in a similar vein.

Deborah sold the store to Brenda in July 2022. “It took about two seconds to say yes, when it was offered,” Brenda laughs.

She has continued the original theme of careful curation so that the contents of the store are both a reflection of herself, and the book loving community it serves.

She admits it may sound self-indulgent, but it works.

Back in Eureka, she was named Brenda Louise Armor, by her birth mother, a single woman who had fallen for a navy man, already married. Brenda’s birthday is 1st October.

“I reckon, I’m a New Year’s Eve baby!”

Brenda was adopted and she became Brenda Joan Philip. Her parents brought her to New Zealand, aged four. Raised in Upper Hutt, she studied at Otago University, until she married at 20, and became Brenda Dell.

She and David had four children and as a minister’s wife they moved around, eventually back to Upper Hutt. But when divorced at 35, she took stock, completed her degree, and changed her name to Brenda Gale. “The Wizard of Oz is my favourite story, so I took Dorothy’s last name in tribute”.

Brenda joined the NZ Police in 2004 and her work took her eventually to Featherston and Masterton where for three years she was in the Family Safety Team, describing it as the best years of her policing. Brenda married Jeff in 2010 and she took his name, Channer, and here she is in Martinborough. Five names later.

Brenda’s bookshop is her pride and joy. A wartime history section attracts the male readers, keen to find a shop which isn’t a clothing store. She’s developing the Te Reo section, gearing towards Matariki, and the biggest development is the adoption of the Post Shop agency which was looking for a new home in town.

“It brings in lots of wonderful local customers, some of whom are discovering the fabulous Martinborough Bookshop for the first time.”

Helping women enjoy midlife and their Second Spring

Women are not lile men! This was a phrase that resonated deeply with Kāren Maggs when she was planning her courses to help middle aged women moving towards, in the midst, or out the other side of menopause.

The comment is made by exercise physiologist and nutrion scienst, Dr Stacy Sims, who points out that when it comes to exercise, nutrion, and medicine, it has long been assumed that women are just smaller versions of men. Based at the Sports Performance Research Instute New Zealand (SPRINZ) at Auckland’s AUT, Dr Sims says lile research has been done, specifically on women in these areas. In relaon to menopause – the issue is even more pronounced by its silence says Kāren.

“Menopause is hardly ever discussed. In western society women feel they disappear aer midlife and I’m on a mission to change that.”

Kāren says women face huge changes in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, mentally, physically, and emoonally, and yet it can be the me in their lives when they have the most power and ambion.

“It can be a challenging me for women. Children are grown, maybe le home, relaonships with partners have either cemented or foundered, careers are well established, but their validity is being quesoned. AND, then there’s menopause in amongst it all.”

In Tradional Chinese Medicine, menopause is referred to as a woman’s “Second Spring” – a me of renewal, rebirth, and stepping into wisdom and power. It’s a me for women to find new passions and enjoy life with vitality and enthusiasm. Karen helps women to find their sense of purpose and direcon again, and to reconnect with themselves and what is important to them.

Kāren’s background is in Human Resources working in NZ and the UK for merchant banks, global consumer goods, and technology companies.

“I loved the one-to-one aspect of this work, parcularly the guidance aspect when people were at a crossroads and needing a new direcon.”

A skiing accident le her with concussion which took two years to recover from. It gave her me to re-think her life.

Now in her fiies, she feels a huge desire to help women during these transformave years, some dealing with the effects of menopause. She holds classes in Greytown which aract women wanng to understand, and share, their menopause experiences – ranging from hot flushes, irregular bleeding, to severe forgeulness. “They oen feel unheard, and you sense their relief when they can share with others.”

Finest event planning at Brackenridge

If you’ve heard about a beautiful wedding at Brackenridge, which everyone is raving about, it will be the result of careful and fastidious planning and co-ordinating by Courtnay Fafeita, the Event Manager of the Country Retreat on White Rock Road, outside Martinborough.

Courtnay strives for a stress-free wedding absorbing every detail and working alongside the couple, making sure the special day comes together, as they have desired. Her larger-thanlife engaging personality helps all those approaching Brackenridge as their chosen venue, to feel confident their best interests are at heart. “We establish a close bond with the couple from the time of booking,” she says. Clearly a great people-person, she puts down her gregarious personality to her outgoing Irish and Czech descendants. “I didn’t have a chance,” she laughs. Post covid, there has been an increased interest in Brackenridge’s ‘Elopement Packages’ where a couple can rock up and have everything organised for them, down to the celebrant being arranged for them, and they can enjoy two night’s pampered accommodation in the beautifully elegant, yet rustic

Brackenridge business, (this past season October – May, they have been weekly,

sometimes more) but there are also conferences and retreats to arrange for corporates, organisations, and government departments. It’s a popular destination for businesspeople who wish to carry out decision making in a peaceful setting.

Courtnay was born and raised in Masterton and worked in radio promotions in Hawke’s Bay and Wellington before returning to Wairarapa. She joined the Brackenridge team in early 2019 and was on the cusp of heading overseas, when covid hit. Hunkering down, she put her vivacious energy into event management and has discovered great joy in the role. “It’s a great job which just suits me so well.”

“We could not have picked a more perfect venue for our wedding than Brackenridge Country Retreat. Having our guests stay at Brackenridge with us gave us so much time to be able to spend with our family and friends leading up to the wedding. Courtnay and her team made the wedding day itself run flawlessly, making everything easy from start to finish. We loved being able to be hands on with the decorating, but Courtnay made it easy to step back and enjoy the day when the time came. We are especially grateful that the venue was both kid and dog friendly.”

Tweaking your home design for better living

In her own words, Verity Turner is “quite chuffed” that aer two years of study (Diploma Architectural Technology) and a further two years of pracce, she is now a fully licensed building praconer (LBP) for Design.

“Many thanks go to Willem van der Laan from CAD Services & Design in Masterton who has been mentoring me for the last two years and been instrumental in making this happen.”

Verity was formerly a Process Engineer, and the decision to re-direct her life to work in an area she has had a passion for, has been a huge commitment supported by her husband Chris Roberston, and children Lucas, 13, and Laurel, 10.

“Building design has always been an interest. In my early 20s, I was designing and project managing the build of my first home in Naenae. It was meant to be! Now I get to design homes for a job, and I love it.”

Verity and her family moved to Carterton eight years ago to be closer to extended family. They moved an older house on to a rear secon and, of course, set about extending and re-modelling it.

The result is a clean-lined modern home, complete with wide veranda and generaonal living spaces. Living in the centre, and children’s spaces one end, adults the other.

Verity designs new houses, but renovaons and extensions are her passion. She loves to work with homeowners and make their spaces both beauful and work efficiently for them.

“It sounds minor, but moving a wall or adding an extra bathroom in a family home can be life changing for the inhabitants,” she points out.

“So are level entry showers or wider doorways for people with changing needs.”

To help people visualise how they can make their home work beer for them, Verity offers a personal service complete with 3D interacve walkthroughs.

Gaining the edge on hair styling

There’s never a dull moment at Cutting Edge – that boutique hair salon at Solway, Masterton.

Senior hairdressers and long-time mates Keri Mignot and Erin Pearce, are a formidable team when it comes to hairdressing knowledge and experience, and they are also simply great to be around.

Each have a playful and quirky sense of humour and with a loyal clientele, sometimes in the salon at the same time, a party atmosphere can form.

“We’ve had some clients who come along as strangers and sit beside each other having their hair done. The conversation gets going and longer friendships sometimes form. It’s quite lovely,” says Erin.

Keri likes her small salon and she feels less like being part of “conveyor belt hairdressing”.

We offer a very personalised service where I do it all from start to finish.

“I like to listen to the client and get to know what is wanted from a hairstyle, if it suits their face, and if it fits with their lifestyle.”

When they decided to team up at the well-known Cutting Edge salon in 2021 they agreed they wanted to present an intimate relaxed space where people felt they were putting a full stop on their day and were coming to be pampered.

Keri and Erin had worked together in larger salons and knew each other well. Between them, they have two children each and five grandchildren. There’s lots to chat about. When Keri and husband Andrew, decided to purchase Cutting Edge, Erin was keen to be involved, operating in her own right.

Keri has been hairdressing since the late 1980s and Erin digs back even further to the 1970s. We have training on a regular basis to learn new techniques to keep us fresh.

“Remember the perm specials?,” quips Keri. They’ve seen just about every fashion and trend and enjoy today’s preferences where clients follow their individual desires. Trends do not seem to dictate these days.

So when asked for a hair tip heading into winter. “Remember hair always needs moisture to look healthy.”

All You Need Is Cake

All you need is love ... and cake!

Cake decorator, Pia Buck, creates beauful custom cakes from her registered kitchen in her Kent Street home in Carterton. It’s a whole new world for Pia, known internaonally as Melissa Crosby, the Amazon bestselling author, popular for her success in romance wring.

It all happened when she sat down to write her tenth book and found she’d hit a creave wall. Determined not to stress over her writer’s block, she tapped into her other passion ... baking.

Pia’s first cake order was for a young girl’s ninth birthday. “A friend had seen the cake I made for my daughter, and asked if I would make her daughter’s one,” said the Carterton cakemaker. “My husband and children were away at the me. I had a whole weekend to myself, so I said yes.” Lile did she know that the birthday girl had a very specific request: three lile girls roasng marshmallows around a campfire. “I had so much fun making it, I was reminded of how much I enjoyed doing it.”

When yet another friend ordered a custom floral cake, Pia thought, why not? It seemed an obvious move towards unblocking her creavity. Registering her kitchen was the first step to making it all happen. From there, the popularity of her cakes spread through word of mouth.

“I’m truly grateful for the support that our local community has shown me. There’s something about creave cakes that brings out the inner child in people. I’ve since made cakes for so many happy occasions, I can’t help but feel happy too.”

In the world of cakes, anything is possible. “If you can think it, it can be made into a cake”. Pia offers a variety of both classic and custom flavours, catering to most dietary requirements.

Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too? Call her for a chat today!

Keeping the team on task and where they need to be

When it comes to freezing, cooling, or heating, the B.W. O’Brien experienced team can find a solution for any situation, be it in the home, office, farm, café, business, or your vehicle.

The company has been in operation for 49 years, now with second and third generations of the O’Brien Family. They have a great team all with important roles to play – the company’s greatest assets – the team and their customers.

Its large, stable workforce includes a dedicated group of women who run the ‘engine room’ of the business on Dixon Street, Masterton. They enable the tradesmen and their vans (familiar blue and silver livery on Wairarapa roads) to head out to help customers in a prompt and timely manner.

Manager, Ash O’Brien says B.W. O’Brien is a wonderful place to lead – our team are competent, always willing to help and are humorous. When Women in Business was visiting the admin team, two of the tradesmen came in having completed their last job. Grabbing a new job card, they were reminded at the next place, “not to let the cat out.”

It’s that personable service B.W. O’Brien has been respected for since 1974.

With Ash in the office are Debbie, Jasmine, and Maree. “We deliberately sit in an open plan office and take on all areas of responsibility,” explains Ash. “It means anyone can do everything and

the operation is seamless.”

Smooth running is vital for this busy company. There’s all manner of work for the guys.

There’s Commercial Refrigeration where B.W. O’Brien collaborates with clients to design, install, service, and maintain all commercial refrigeration. This includes all kinds of chillers, freezers, rural and dairy farm refrigeration.

Heating and Cooling: When it comes to heat pumps B.W. O’Brien is Wairarapa’s only accredited Daikin Dealer. Heat pumps efficiently heat or cool an area. No-obligation free quotes and site assessments are offered to ensure that the heat pump is sized and positioned correctly to do the job.

And then there’s vehicle airconditioning which requires maintenance, just like your home air conditioning. B.W. O’Brien has specifically trained engineers to conduct this service. They will happily visit farms and forestry blocks too, to maintain heavy vehicle air conditioning.

As a local business, B.W. O’Brien is extremely proud to serve Wairarapa and is committed in supporting schools, organisations and individuals via sponsorships.

B.W. O’Brien’s proud name will be seen in many places.

This is a crucial tool for A1’s clients, who appreciate being able to track progress, even if they live at a distance.

Dogs, dogs everywhere!

They are our constant companions for daily walks, at cafes, the beach, the farm, at the park, or curling up on the couch with us at night.

Dionne Pugh has been grooming dogs for 14 years from her First Street salon in Lansdowne and she has never been in such demand. With assistance Jesse Morrison on weekends, Dionne grooms on average eight dogs a day, six days a week.

“Since Covid, more people can work from home and decided it was the right time to get a dog. Others have found a dog has eased their feeling of anxiety and isolation. The multitude of dogs now in the region is posing a few challenges,” says Dionne.

“It’s important for many dogs to be bathed and groomed regularly to keep them healthy, but the demand for dog grooming in Wairarapa is outstripping the service.”

“We’re at least four or five groomers less in the district now than we were 18 months ago. To my knowledge there has been no one new in Wairarapa and there has been no one else step up who has the training or the skills. This isn’t

just a local problem – it’s nationwide.”

Dionne provides a free pickup service in Masterton, Carterton and Greytown, but there’s only so much one woman can do.

“I have a loyal customer base, some of the dogs have been coming to me for their lifetime, and regular clients are my priority. While new customers are welcome, at this point I feel I must restrict the newcomers to those who have been referred to me by existing clients.”

For the love of dogs, Dionne is always keen to give grooming advice though.

“Adopting a regular grooming cycle, preferably from a young age, is important for the dog as it becomes familiar with the process and enjoys being fussed over. Leaving a dog to the point of being overgrown and matted is not much fun for the dog, or me. Also, health-wise, trimming the dog’s face is important in keeping the hair from interfering with the eyes and mouth.” Dionne encourages regular twomonthly grooming as optimal care, offering in-between face and nail trims.

At A1homes Wairarapa in Greytown, it’s impossible not to recognise the amazing women who are instrumental to many of the company’s accomplishments. With their exceptional skills and talents, these fantastic women are breaking down barriers and proving there’s no limits to what a woman can achieve in the construction sector.

Encouraging the art of vehicle maintenance

Jordan Hooper flashes a cheery smile as you enter the refurbished, fresh looking reception area of Cheers Auto –the mechanic’s workshop in Pembroke Street, Carterton (just over the railway line). Customers are often already smiling after being greeted by the hilarious corrugated iron characters, which promote the business from the roofline.

Jordan and her partner, Ben Hooper, are into their fifth year of business and despite a rocky road manoeuvring their way through covid, they are all smiles.

“It may sound counterproductive, but we love to see vehicles well looked after, not needing major work, and clients not having to face hefty bills due to delayed maintenance,” says Jordan. “It’s not only cheaper in the long run but it helps the vehicle survive longer. No-one wants to have to face an expensive engine replacement, when all they needed six months previous, was an oil and filter change. We are really trying to provide good practical advice as we want the best for our customers.”

The Cheers team are on an education drive to encourage vehicle owners to foster maintenance mentality. Jordan has created a series of service menus which customers can select from. They are pre-purchase check, safety check over, oil and filter check, mini service, or full service. Descriptions of each are listed on posters Jordan has designed and displayed on the

reception wall. Apart from qualified mechanic Ben in the workshop, there’s Jason Brixton (2IC qualified mechanic), and Joel Charters (3rd year apprentice).

Accounts are done by Bonnie Horton and Jordan is office administrator.

Jason has recently qualified as a WOF inspector taking the pressure off Ben.

“With two mechanics, now certified, it means we can offer the WOF service more promptly,” says Jordan.

Not only do they want the best for their customer but they have rearranged staff hours. All do four-day weeks/10 hours per day resulting in three-day weekends. Half the staff do MondayThursday and the other half TuesdayFriday. “It’s giving a better home-life balance for all,” says Jordan.

She and Ben have two children aged 7 and 12.

The Cheers workshop is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and equipment and offers the complete range of mechanical services, including wheel alignments, batteries, radiator cooling system repairs, engine re-conditioning, suspension, exhaust, gearbox, and diff repairs, cambelts and more.

They can source parts for all vehicles quickly and at competitive prices. They happily provide quotes and are WINZ approved and approved repairer for most insurance policies.

Gabrielle Roche (Gabs): Gabs has been with Provincial for seven years and knows the business inside out. “I worked my way up from broker support, to leading the broker support team, and then being a broker.” Her role mainly involves commercial packages for buildings and businesses.

Prior to insurance, Gabs had customer service and administrative roles. These, along with life experience, have prepared her perfectly for working at Provincial. “I see things from the client’s perspective.”

Gabrielle juggles work with bringing up her young daughter. “I’ve grown with the company, and I love the positive, flexible work environment,” she says.

Elle Hawley: Elle has been with Provincial for just over six months, building on seven years of previous experience in insurance, including claims management. She’s also had experience in customer service roles, giving her a skill set easily transferrable to insurance. “Understanding claims has influenced the advice I give to my clients,” she says. “I can explain how it works. I can work with clients to develop the best option for their premium payments.”

For Provincial, she focuses on domestic insurance such as house, contents, vehicle and lifestyle blocks. Elle and her partner are proud parents of a two-year old son.

Marianne Paton-Sentch: Marianne’s background is as a rural insurance broker. She’s also worked for Fonterra and has been a commercial manager for AgriBio, focusing on animal health. In November last year, Marianne returned to rural insurance. “I know how rural businesses are run and how to support them with insurance through weather events and when debt levels are high,” she says.

Marianne and her husband are raising a family in Wairarapa with two children at Carterton School. They have a lifestyle block and horses. “Working for Provincial in Wairarapa – I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
