WELCOME President’s message
aspire to. We feel that our on-going events to encourage novice shearers and wool handlers has been a success with the introduction of the student shearing challenge….between farm training facilities.
On behalf of the Golden Shears committee it gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone to this 59th iconic event. Without the on-going support of our terrific committee, life members, volunteer helpers, judges, officials, sheep suppliers, this event could not run. A special thanks to our major sponsors, Bayleys, PGG Wrightson, Lister, Trust House and Shear Expertise, as well as our many smaller sponsors, and also support we get from the Masterton District Council. Also to the Wairarapa College and Rathkeale students who have stepped up to the mark along with the continued support of YFC to help in our tipping pens due to the unavailability of Taratahi students this year. We extend a warm welcome to our friends from across the Tasman once again. Manager Jamie Clout, Shearers Daniel McIntyre, Jason Wingfield, Callum O’Brien, Wool Handlers
Sadly last year we lost a previous President Darryl Hart after a long illness. He was an extremely colourful and wellliked character at Golden Shears for many years, our thoughts go out to Ann and his family.
Sophie Huf and Melanie Morris along with their Judges Robert Carter and Greg Drew. We look forward to an exciting Trans-Tasman contest. All last year’s winners especially Rowland Smith (Open Shearing), Joel Henare (Wool Handling) and Vincent Goodger (Pressing) certainly give something to the competition that others can really

The world’s premier Shearing & Wool Handling Championship
One of the real strengths of Golden Shears is the fact it is run by a large and
Sam Saunders, President
timekeepers and others contribute as much as any competitor in making this the wonderful event it has become.
I’m delighted to welcome you to the 2019 Golden Shears, the world’s premier shearing and wool handling competition. Masterton is proud to have been the host of this international event since 1961. The Golden Shears is one of the most important events in our district’s packed events calendar, attracting hundreds of visitors every year and giving our local economy a tremendous boost. The introduction of live streaming the event across the globe has helped to further cement Masterton’s association with shearing and helped to increase our profile at a time when our population is growing steadily.
Enjoy….we hope everyone leaves Masterton after having a weekend of good entertainment, hospitality and making new friendships!

SHEARER THANKS SAVIOURS Among those Nooroa thanked were Kelvin O’Reilly and Eric Barber, two of the first on the scene to administer CPR.
The former two-times Golden Shears Wool Handling Champion who collapsed on stage in March 2018 marked his 62nd birthday last July by celebrating with those who kept him alive.
Barber said he and his Wainuioru Rural Fire Service colleagues, Tim Williams and Andy Phillips, were able to put into practise the training they were given on the job.
Mii Nooroa, also known as ‘Mic’, went into cardiac arrest on stage in front of 900 spectators, minutes after competing in the veterans’ event final at the 58th Annual Shearing and Wool Handling Championships in Masterton. The night’s events ended abruptly as on-site medic, Barry Ibell, and others from the crowd worked frantically to keep him alive. Nooroa stood before those who resuscitated him, as well as other members of Golden Shears committee, to share heartfelt thanks for their lifesaving efforts. “I can’t remember anything, but I would just like to thank you for what you’ve done. If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be here. I owe you guys my life,” he said. Nooroa’s road to recovery hasn’t been smooth sailing, before or after quadruple bypass surgery.
Eric Barber, left, Mii ‘Mic’ Nooroa, and Kelvin O’Reilly, celebrating Nooroa’s birthday at the Wool Shed Museum.
“I died a couple of times in Wellington [hospital] but they brought me back. I don’t think they wanted me up there yet.” Golden Shears committee vice-president Sam Saunders was grateful a medic was on site for the event and was “extremely pleased” they could all share Nooroa’s birthday with him, presenting him with a cake to celebrate. “You were obviously meant to have this birthday.”

Kelvin O’Reilly Business Manager 203 Chapel Street (06) 377 1017 masterton@farmlands.co.nz
O’Reilly, manager at Farmlands Masterton, said the company sponsored the wool pressing parts of the event and had several staff present when Nooroa collapsed in front of them. It was a company requirement to have a staff member trained in first aid, and O’Reilly had renewed his certificate just two weeks before the incident. Both O’Reilly and Barber acknowledged it took the combined efforts of people with the right skills and tools to keep Nooroa alive until the ambulance arrived. “If it wasn’t for the defibrillator, he wouldn’t be with us,” O’Reilly said.
SHE SHEARS IN TOP FIVE believed he and his crew had “pulled off something world class” despite only costing about $300,000 over the three years. The film was funded via crowd funding, and some of its main sponsors including Rural Women New Zealand, Trust House and Farmlands.
Last October saw the theatre release of She Shears at Masterton’s Regent 3 Cinema. Since then the film has enjoyed excellent ticket sales, positive comments from film goers and praise from film critics. Shearing a sheep is said to be one of the hardest jobs in the world and that is what documentary director Jack Nicol hoped to prove in She Shears which followed the lives of five women shearers gunning for glory at the Golden Shears.
After its nationwide release in Masterton on October 11, it went on to become one of the widest released films of 2018, showing on over 40 screens in New Zealand and was the fifth highest grossing New Zealand film last year.
Nicol, a self-confessed townie, said it took about a year of reading and talking to people before filming began. “I always wanted to do a shearing movie because no one had really done one in quite the way we did it,” he said. Shearing was fascinating to him, especially the concept of women shearing “back in the day” which was not really the done thing – but that’s all changing, he said. “In all the shearing books you come across these chapters on female shearers, and they are wedged in there and are just a few pages. New Zealand shearers

are the best in the world and no one had really celebrated that.” Nicol said it was fun to “hang out with a bunch of shearers, I don’t really get to do that in my daily life”. As an up and coming director, Nicol
“Everyone loved the film,” Nicol says. “Our reviews were fantastic. We were consistently rated as a four star film. The best part was engaging with all our fans and hearing stories about how they loved seeing a quirky part of New Zealand culture on screen.” What happens next with the film? “We are enjoying watching the DVD version of the film rush off shelves - it’s in the top 10 selling DVDs on mightyape.co.nz right now. We’re also excited about our UK cinema release coming soon, and showing it to the rest of the world!”

OBITUARY - DARRYL HART On the 24th October 2018, Golden Shears sadly farewelled one of their past presidents. Darryl Hart succumbed to metastatic squamous cell carcinoma, a form of melanoma. Darryl, aged 65, is our fourth president in 59 years to have passed away. Darryl started his long relationship with Golden Shears back in the early 1970s when he tipped sheep for judging at the annual event as a member of the Wainuioru Young Farmers Club. Working on farms and learning the skill of shearing, Darryl become a valued volunteer for Golden Shears helping his good friend Ken Osborne in the sheep yards unloading and dispatching sheep for the various grades of competition. Darryl enjoyed his job in the yards and become chief yards man after Ken’s retirement. Little did Darryl realise he would be destined to become a president and life member of Golden Shears. Darryl’s journey for Golden Shears took a massive change when he accepted the position of stage manager, being thrust into the front of house and an audience of 2000 excited supporters. Darryl was stage manager from the mid-90s to 2005. As stage manager Darryl really excelled.
Darryl Hart being presented with the Simpson Trophy by Greg Herrick at the 2018 Golden Shears.
In 2005 Greg retired as president and encouraged Darryl to consider a role as president of Golden Shears. Darryl accepted the challenge and was so proud to be elected president in 2005. Darryl’s term ended in 2008 when he passed the reins to the first woman president of Golden Shears, Mrs Mavis Mullins. After his presidency, Darryl returned in a mentoring role for Golden Shears.
He was passionate and imaginative, also realising how important it was to present a slick, exciting and entertaining show for the audience.
He advised and passed on his knowledge as a great stage manager to Tracey Stringer and Peter Noble, the new incumbent stage managers today.
With the talented MC in Craig Cooper, a new young president Greg Herrick and Darryl as a colourful charismatic and methodical stage manager, these were great years for Golden Shears.
In 2013 Darryl was presented Life Membership from the Golden Shears. In 2018 Darryl received the Alister Simpson Memorial Trophy for Services to the Golden Shears.
Darryl’s untimely death has left a huge void for the Golden Shears family. In Darryl’s own words “IT IS WHAT IT IS”. Darryl – we acknowledge your passion and contribution, you shall always be remembered in the history book of Golden Shears.

OBITUARY - DAVE MCPHERSON It was with sorrow that we learnt of the passing of an iconic Golden Shears character on the Sunday after our 2018 event. Larger than life, the big man with the huge bushy side-burns and ready smile – “Hairy Mac” as he was affectionately known – seemed synonymous with the movement of wool in the stadium for many years. Dave first became a shepherd for Fred McKinstry at Maungaru, Masterton. Two years later he started work in a wool store in Wellington where he realised he had a gift for wool and wool handling. He began formal training at night at CIT in Petone, then worked for NZ Loan and Mercantile, which eventually merged into Dalgetys... a company he was associated with for 35 years. Dave completed a Diploma in Wool & Wool Classing from Massey University and became one of the first three registered wool classers in New Zealand eventually becoming patron of the NZ Wool Classers Association. In1967 Dave was posted to Masterton as wool manager for Dalgetys, a position he held for 14 years before being transferred as manager to Gracefield Woolbrokers in Wellington and 4 years later to Te Kuiti. It was while he was at Te Kuiti Dave was contacted by Merv Kite to set up what became Central Wool Services back in Masterton, which he built up over the next 10 years.
In a very nice gesture CP Wools held a celebratory function in his honour on the Thursday before he passed away. Dave’s work life would not be complete
It all started at the beginning in 1961, when he would catch the Dominion truck to Masterton to press the wool. He attended his last Golden Shears after 56 years, being on the Committee from 19691980. He was a wool judge for many years, judging at many shows countrywide.
Dave worked up to the last minute thanks to CP Wools and Peter Semmens picking him up at the rest home and taking him to work... not bad for 84!!! Dave’s motto was: Work hard, never expect anything for nothing, take time to see the funny side, and never get to the end of your life saying “if only”. It served him well right to the end!

WOOL HANDLING BENEFITS FROM SHEAR EXPERTISE A desire to see the standard of Wool Handling at the Golden Shears remain high was the motivation for Paddy Mason of Shear Expertise to sponsor this years’ Open Wool Handling Championship. “It’s good for the shearing industry, and farmers benefit as well. The prize money makes it worthwhile for woolhandlers to give it a go,” he says. Shear Expertise is one of the largest shearing businesses in the region, working in woolsheds from Dannevirke to the south Wairarapa coast. Paddy comes from shearing stock on both sides of his family and has been in the industry for most of his working life. His grandmother Hinerau Mason organised the Wool Handlers for the shearing competition at the Golden Shears from its inception in 1961 and the Open Wool Handling Cup is named after her.
As well as sponsoring the Open Wool Handling Championship, Shear Expertise provides the resident shearers for the Wool Handling competitions at the Golden Shears. This is an art in itself, as the shearers have to maintain a consistent speed and quality to be fair to each of the competitors, with the timing of the shearing increasing or decreasing depending on the grade. “All the shearers need to work together and start and stop at the same time.” Most years also sees members of the Shear Expertise team competing in the Golden Shears, with many making the final of their grade – Sharnie Rimene winning the Golden Shears Intermediate Championship and Paddy’s son Matene Mason winning the Senior Shearing title, both in 2011.
Hanna (Missy) Riddell receiving her Tino Tautoko award from Viv Napier South Wairarapa Mayor at the Wairarapa Maori Sports Awards 2018.
Hanna Rei Riddell
Hanna is of Ngāti Kahungunu descent. Hanna (known as Missy) grew up in the shearing industry with her father a shearing contractor and the passion she has for it is Wairarapa’ s gain. Missy has been a volunteer for the Golden Shears since 1990 and a committee member since 2003. Over the years she has quietly worked in the background ensuring this huge annual event runs smoothly. Missy is the team leader of the Resident Wool Handlers who are on duty for the entirety of the three days and nights of competition. With over 200 volunteers who contribute to the event, Missy’s role in organising her volunteers is seamless and one that the committee fully appreciate and value.

OPEN FINAL EXCEEDS SPONSOR’S EXPECTATIONS Although Bayleys Eastern Realties principal James Macpherson had learned to shear on his family’s sheep & beef farm on the East Coast when he was 12, and was still shearing his own sheep until 15 years ago, last year was his first experience at the Golden Shears. Bayleys sponsored the Open Final so it was the job of James and Bayleys national country manager Duncan Ross to present the coveted cup to winner Roland Smith. “I absolutely enjoyed the Golden Shears as I suspected I would – the entertainment factor, but also I got a big kick out of how it is community-led, and such a big a community event.” The Open Final was sponsored for the first time ever last year, and at that time James noted “the strong synergy between the Golden Shears and Bayleys which is the dominant real estate company in farm sales throughout New Zealand.”
Bayleys Eastern Realties principal James Macpherson
He said then that Bayleys wanted a longterm relationship with the Golden Shears, and the company, which encompasses the East Coast, Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa, was keen to continue sponsoring the final.
“We have been getting good support because of it already. There has been a lot of appreciation in the farming community and many people have commented on it. We are very proud to do it.”

JUDGING IN A NUTSHELL In all disciplines, a penalty system for points is used; the lower the total the better WOOL PRESSING
Competitors are judged on workmanship, safety and technique. Loading the press, tramping, pressing the bale, capping and completion of bale are the most important judging criteria. Bale target weights are set with penalties for being over or under weight. Time points are deducted at 1 point for every 20 seconds elapsed or part thereof.
WOOL HANDLING
Judging is divided into two sections; Board (what the audience sees) and Wool Assessment. Board Judging Takes into account the tidiness and efficiency of the competitor, the throw and skirting of the fleece, plus the roll and placement into a fadge. Fleeces are ‘skirted’ for finer neck wool, stained side wool, short wool and for other faults as necessary. Skirtings are separated and placed in baskets.
Wool Assessment Fleeces and oddments are removed from the board for assessment. Fleeces should be free of skirtings and each basket should have a different type of wool. Whole points are accumulated from the board and assessment judging. Sealed times are set for each grade, from the shearer finishing to when the competitor should finish. Time points accumulate for the sealed time but increase five-fold past that time. Board, assessment and time penalties are added for the total points.
SHEARING
Competitors are judged whilst shearing and in the outside pens for overall quality. Shearing the sheep, a second cut or double cut of wool staple is penalised. A second cut of 11mm x 10mm x 85mm long (or the accumulation of smaller second cuts) accrues a 1 stroke penalty. The shorn sheep is judged for wool left on
B.W. O’BRIEN & CO. LTD.
at the same penalty value as above. Skin cuts are also penalised. Penalty strokes on the board and from the pen judging are divided by the number of sheep shorn to give a quality points total. Time points are calculated at 1 point for every 20 seconds elapsed or part thereof. Quality points and time points are added together for the competitor’s total score.
TRIATHLON
An event for competitors from Junior to Open grades. With three disciplines within the industry (shearing, wool handling and wool pressing) a competitor who enters all disciplines at Golden Shears will automatically be entered in the Triathlon. Points are accumulated from the heats of each discipline and totalled, with the lowest points deciding the winner. The Triathlon is kindly sponsored by the NZSCA – New Zealand Shearing Contractors Association.

SNIPPETS Wairarapa Times-Age cycle challenge finale First introduced in 2016, Friday night sees the finale of this popular novelty event to determine which Sports Code takes line-honours. Having witnessed Neil Sidwell’s specially engineered bike at Auckland Easter Show, Philip Morrison knew it would be just the thing to entertain the crowd while the Trans-Tasman Wool Handling Test judging is completed. Neil, a well-known shearer
& judge from Silverdale, had a bike specially engineered to power a shearing hand piece. While one person rides the bike another shears the sheep. The key to winning is who can cycle the fastest, Philip says. “You can’t shear the sheep any faster than the person on the bike can pedal.” While the sheep has to be shorn to a good standard, the winner is decided by the fastest team to shear the sheep.
Each year three local sports codes have competed in the challenge with their prize-money being donated to their chosen charity. Codes to participate have included rugby, tennis, squash, soccer, multi-sports and unsurprisingly, cycling. Previous winners Cycling (2016) and Tennis (2017) will ride/shear against the winner from the last round on Thursday night, in a final as the last event on Friday night.
New Zealand Team for 2019 World Champs With the World Shearing and Wool Handling Championships in France from 4-7th July, New Zealand will send a competition team comprising 2 shearers, 2 blade shearers and 2 wool handlers. The blade shearers have competed in a circuit of competitions culminating at the November 2018 Canterbury A&P Show.
Machine shearers will be represented by the Open grade winners from Golden Shears (Masterton 2nd March) and the New Zealand Shearing Championships (Te Kuiti 30th March).
in a semi-final on Saturday morning 2nd March. The top 4 qualifiers will then go head to head in a final on Saturday night with the 2 lowest scoring competitors selected for France.
Wool handling representatives will be selected at this year’s Golden Shears. 8 competitors, 4 each from North and South Island circuits, will firstly compete
Team officials to travel with the team are Ken Payne – manager; Linda Tarrant – wool handling judge; and Bart Hadfield – shearing judge.

THE NOODLES - PLAYING THE SONGS EVERYONE LOVES TO HEAR The Noodles, who entertain on Friday evening, are Wellington’s busiest professional covers band, playing three to four nights a week in Wellington and all around New Zealand’s top nightspots.
Anthem songs that people know always seem to get the crowd going or a new song that happens to be really popular on the radio at the time, says Leah.
The band was formed by Nick Noodle over 14 years ago. The guitarist and lead vocalist for the band, Nick started out as a solo act performing through the Wellington scene before developing this into a three piece band and performing full time as The Noodles ever since. The current band has been together for a decade with Nick joined by Frazer Jones bass and lead vocals, Sam Russell on drums, and Leah Hawkins the band’s entertainment manager and sound tech. The Noodles’ repertoire ranges from classic rock through to contemporary from the 1960s to today.

Song choice and the flexibility to work with most genres – playing what everyone loves to hear – is the foundation of the band’s popularity, she says. “We are dedicated to what we do, so I think that reflects in our music quality and professionalism.” The Noodles have played to audiences of 50 to 3000 over the years, with many memorable gigs. “We’ve played at so many events, amazing locations. They are all great and have their differences. Toast Martinborough comes to mind as a big event that we’ve been privileged enough to play in every year.” The Noodles have also been involved with charity events such as Pink Ribbon Day (breast cancer) and Women’s Refuge.
Situated just outside Masterton, Rathkeale College is a State-Integrated Boys’ Boarding and Day Secondary School catering for Years 9-13. We are extremely proud of all we have to offer, so invite you and your family to come and have a look for yourselves. Staff and students will be on hand to help you explore our 123 acres of outdoors, take an eco walk down to the river, try the confidence courses, check out our bike track and see what is happening in Agri-Business with our developing Land Lab. There will also be a chance to view our excellent boarding facilities. SHENANIGANS LEAD VOCALIST WILL FULFIL A DREAM A resident of Wairarapa for the past four years, Justin Reed has been aware of the Golden Shears all his life as an iconic event. This year Justin and fellow bandmates Jane Boyers, Maurice Phillips and Neha will not just be attending the event but will provide the Saturday night entertainment. Justin is promising some good old Irish country foot-stomping music. The band knows that getting the audience up and dancing is as important as meaningful lyrics and technical virtuosity. As well as reconstructing traditional Irish/ Celtic tunes that have been around for generations, the Shenanigans enjoy taking well-known contemporary classics and “Irishing” them up. Justin comes from a folk and rock background that took in Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan as well as Johnny Cash and John Denver, before connecting with his Celtic family roots.
Along with vocals, Justin plays acoustic guitar, mandolin, whistles, harmonica and electric guitar. His enthusiasm for music and entertaining as well as his sense of humour is infectious. Jane is a classically trained violinist who has been playing fiddle for over 30 years. She also enjoys playing mandolin and tenor banjo. Before joining the Shenanigans, Jane lived an incredible existence as a full-time
costume designer for large stage-shows in New York. “Theatre is where music and art come together and the United States is the place for huge musical inspiration where great country, bluegrass, and jazz music co-habit,” she says. Maurice’s main claim to fame is playing drums on Kiwi 1980s hit “Life Begins at Forty” with Dave and the Dynamos, while Neha supplies exceptional bass skills for the band.

THE REMARKABLE STORY OF SHEEP VACCINES IN NEW ZEALAND Last year, tens of thousands of farmers – in New Zealand and around the world – vaccinated their sheep and cattle against clostridial diseases, and diseases that cause sheep abortions and productivity losses. That they vaccinated against these diseases is not remarkable - these disease causing bacteria are widespread. What is remarkable is that these vaccines have been developed and made in New Zealand where scientists have for nearly 80 years worked at improving the health and productivity of New Zealand’s farm animals. The first vaccine developed here was for the clostridial disease blackleg. It was made available to kiwi farmers in the 1940’s, and was actually manufactured at the same Upper Hutt site that is today New Zealands leading vaccine manufacturer. Back then, the company was called Trentham Vaccine Laboratories, and in 1961 when the inaugural Golden Shear event was held, TVL were there supporting this great event. A few years later in 1968, TVL launched the first 5-strain clostridial vaccine for NZ farmers, Multine® 5-in-1, the most widely used vaccine in New Zealand today.
now a significant export contributor, with MSD in Upper Hutt now exporting locally manufactured vaccines to over 60 countries around the world. This is a testament to the innovation of kiwi farmers in leading the adoption of vaccines as a tool to help prevent stock disease and improve flock performance, and of the calibre of science, scientists and the painstaking precision MSD applies to the manufacture of vaccines. MSD also make the Coopers Animal Health range of anti-parasitic brands including Magnum® and Zenith® (fly and lice products), and drenches like Alliance® and Scanda®. Made for New Zealand, in New Zealand. MSD brands are synonymous with trust and the drive to help farmers achieve superior animal health. These local vaccines help ensure New Zealand farmers can continue to raise the bar in terms of sheep productivity and farm profitability. As a sponsor of the Golden Shears since its inception in 1961 as TVL, MSD is very proud of our enduring partnership with this iconic brand and we wish the Golden Shears all the best for another great event.
50 years later, and these vaccines have continued to be innovated on, with the latest release of Multine B12 - NZs leading clostridial vaccine boosted with the convenience of vitamin B12 – another vaccine option to keep livestock healthier, and farming more productive.
Golden Shears 2019
As well as developing and manufacturing the most extensive range of NZ’s leading vaccines, including Toxovax®, CampyVax®4, Salvexin®+B, Multine®, Nilvax®, Lamb Vaccine and Covexin® 10, this local technology not only benefits NZ farmers, but is

EDDIE REIDY (1941-2018) - ALL ROUND CHAMPION By Des Williams
Golden Shears open champion 1973 and finalist on four other occasions, including runner-up 1971; Caltex National champion 1974 and third in 1976; Western Shears open champion 1970. Runner-up at New Zealand Merino Shears 1975 and the National Lamb Shear at Raglan 1974. Full wool, second shear, fine wool and lambs – does that suggest the man could shear anything and everything put in front of him? And shear it with quality? Nearly twenty years before this writer met Eddie Reidy, he heard his name on National Radio – no live streaming back then! It was the Golden Shears open final of 1971 when the New Zealand public was ‘treated’ to about 10 minutes of Godfrey Bowen’s commentary. Listening on a mate’s car radio: ‘Just look at Eddie Reidy down there on stand five – the smallest man on the board and he’s showing everybody else how to shear sheep!’ And that he was, Godfrey Bowen – all except for Snow Quinn, that is, who beat him to the purple ribbon by 13 onehundredths of a point. Or as Quinn later suggested; ‘Like winning the 100 metres by the width of the tape!’ We recounted just a few of the many famous stories about Eddie and his illustrious career in the 2017 Golden Shears programme. Sadly, the ‘smallest man on the board’ passed away on 18 December 2018, just a few weeks away from his 78th birthday. RIP Eddie Reidy – Master Shearer, legend of the industry.
