President’s welcome On behalf of the Golden Shears committee it gives me much pleasure to welcome you to the 60th Golden Shears. This history making occasion would never have been possible without the dedicated support of committee members, sheep suppliers and competitors.
Patterson and the Masterton District Council for their ongoing major support, and also to previous Mayors and Councils also.
Nothing this size can happen without sponsorship, big and small! Our current main sponsors are Bayleys, PGG Wrightson, Lister, Trust House and Shear Expertise.
Sadly we have lost a very dear friend, Koro Mullins. Koro was known throughout the shearing world as a competitive shearer in his younger days, and a commentator around many shearing shows, including Golden Shears. Of late he led the Live Streaming team where his knowledge, expertise and perfection took live streaming to very high levels. Koro will be sadly missed by his wife Mavis and family, friends and
This year we have honoured Trust House in recognition of their support to us over the years by creating the Trust House Open Wednesday with no entry charges. A big thank you to Mayor Lyn
Welcome to our Trans-Tasman Shearers and Wool Handlers, who will compete against New Zealand in the Trans-Tasman series once again.
his Golden Shears family. Once again we hope you all enjoy your stay in Masterton and go away with very fond memories of the Golden Shears 60th birthday. Sam Saunders, President
Mayor’s Message I’m delighted to welcome you to the 2020 Golden Shears, the 60th Anniversary of the world’s premier shearing and woolhandling competition. Masterton is proud to be the host of this international event. The Golden Shears is one of the most important events in our district’s packed events calendar, attracting hundreds of visitors every year and giving our local economy a tremendous boost. The introduction of live streaming the event across the globe has helped to further cement Masterton’s association with shearing.
One of the real strengths of Golden Shears is the fact it is run by a large and dynamic team of volunteers. The superb team of organisers, judges, referees, stewards, commentators, timekeepers and others contribute as much as any competitor in making this the wonderful event it has become. I would especially like to welcome all visitors to Masterton, especially those who are here for the first time; we hope you find our district as beautiful, unique and relaxing as we do.
I look forward to seeing you in action. Enjoy the week!
Good luck to all the competitors and

Golden Shears 2020
Golden Shears – The beginning By Edwin O’Hara Where do great ideas come from? What is it that sparks the imagination and gives people the drive and determination to make something happen? In 1960 sheep numbers were climbing rapidly with wool prices climbing and shearing was a vital part of the industry. In the shed there was competition on the stands every day as shearers tried to get one up on their workmates. It was quite natural that they would be keen to pit their skills against other shearers in a competition. There were competitions held at shows and other venues in places throughout the country but they were mainly at a local level. Some two years before Golden Shears began Laurie Keats (MNZM), Geoff Laing, and Ivan Taplin were at a Young Farmers Club shearing competition at Wairoa, and while waiting for the results began discussing how great a national competition would be.
Records show that YFC shearing competitions had been held from 1948 so it was natural that they played a major part in shearer training and competitions. Laurie decided to push this idea forward and approached several civic and business people but only mild interest was shown. This changed when he approached Roy O’Hara (Federated Farmers) to come and watch a YFC shearing competition at the A&P show in Masterton. The competition held in the ram selling pavilion was a huge success with crowds lining up happy to pay an additional sideshow fee. Roy could see the enormous potential of Laurie’s idea and his enthusiasm became a pivotal and driving force. With the weight of FF on board and support from Les Laing (Masterton Public Relations) the idea was rapidly moving from maybe to let’s go. An added incentive took place in 1960 when hundreds queued to watch
a demonstration of shearing by Ivan Bowen & Claude Waite staged in a disused garage in Masterton. Godfrey Bowen working for the NZ Wool Board was making a name for himself teaching a very efficient style of shearing and setting a new shearing record. It was amazing how quickly things moved. Bob Chamberlain FF became chairman of a working executive to set up a new society, the format of which has changed little through its 60 years. YFC and Federated Farmers essentially formed a partnership with FF having initial control. Of special note is the objective of the Society stated below which is still fully met today. To promote competition in shearing and Wool Handling at local, national and international levels in order to encourage the highest standards of the craft and to ensure the best handling and presentation of the wool clip (wool pressing has been added). Making it happen was an enormous

Weraiti farm used in the open final. These were big bodied and full woolled with little preparation. Some shearers reckoned only the nose was showing. A really tough test for the guns to battle with.

As always it is often who you know that counts and Bob Chamberlain had good contacts with Caltex and Borthwicks both of whom became very enthusiastic supporters. Tasman Vaccine Laboratories (TVL) joined the troupe at £1000 each. The newly built stadium was chosen as the venue and a clever carpenter, Wally Burns, made the first wooden kitset shearing boards with design
guidance from Roy O’Hara and Wool Board raised-board specifications. Arrangements had to be made to get sheep into the stadium and a set of yards organised to handle sheep coming and going. A marquee was used to cover the yards behind the stadium. Getting sheep to be shorn was probably the easiest as farmers were keen to have their sheep involved and provided high quality animals for the event. Of special note were the top quality Romneys from Ian McRae’s
The YFC had plenty of experience with running competitions and provided information on timing, judging inside and out but there were several variations used around the country and a scoring system, was thoroughly debated. The YFC had generally used positive scoring where set marks were allocated for different sections and shearers lost marks for errors. Set times were allocated for an event and shearers only lost points for time beyond set time. Manpower needed to run the event was probably the easiest challenge as YFC membership in Wairarapa in 1961 was quite high and plenty of eager helpers were available. Many of these were later to become committee, executive, and presidents of the Society.

Obituary Koro Mullins By Doug Laing Across the shearing fraternity something has been missing since the sudden September 16 death of ‘the voice’ of the Golden Shears Koro Mullins. It was just a fortnight before the start of the new season at which he would have again been the voice of shearing at six competitions up and down the east coast – ringmaster and arena commentator at Poverty Bay, Hawke’s Bay, Central Hawke’s Bay, Wairoa and Dannevirke A and P Show, and taking our sport to the World via the livestreaming at Golden Shears. Over the years he had also takenup the microphone at other shows, including the New Zealand Shears in Te Kuiti. His passing was unexpected, while in Wellington for a relatively minor surgical procedure. “It leaves a big gap, it’ll take a lot to fill it,” said former fellow-competitor and eventual Golden Shears president now justretired Golden Shears World Council chairman Greg Herrick. “Perhaps it will never be filled.” As it happens, the family will do its best to fill the gap, with son Tuma continuing the commentating and announcing role he’s performed for some years, and the face of
the TV role being filled by widow Mavis Mullins.
his one and only Golden Shears Open shearing final.
It’s not particularly surprising that while acutely missing the man they will barely miss a beat, parts of a Dannevirke family with multigenerational shearing history, and their own individual parts spanning as more than half the 60 years of the Golden Shears.
Both Koro and Mavis, by that time also established as shearing contractors in Dannevirke after taking over the Paewai family run of the past, recalled the moment Koro heard he’d made it, in their van parked by the Waipoua River as the list of finalists crackled over the radio.
It was in 1987 that Mavis Mullins (nee Paewai) won her first Golden Shears Open woolhandling titles, and 1993 when she won her second, the same Shears at which Koro Tumatahi Mullins, of Te Arawa stock and born in Rotorua on August 13, 1954, shore in
The ultimate significance of that announcement would have been lost in the euphoria of having reached shearings’ equivalent of centre court finals day at Wimbledon. Of the six for shearings’ greatest 20 minutes later in the evening, Koro

Mullins would be the only one never to win the title. David Fagan had already won three of his eventual 16, Colin King had won 3, Paul Grainger and Edsel Forde had won 1 each, and Paul Avery would eventual win his 2, in 2005 and 2007. About that time, Koro was already starting to flex the vocal cords in the changing of the times in the repackaging of Golden Shears, where trailblazing Phil O’Shaughnessy, from Northland, would be joined by Koro Mullins, each in formal dress, with red-to-crimson waist-coast, in the presentation of the most important moments on the nights, with corporate tables, nibbles and wine. His trademark became his explanations of how the shearing industry works, why the shearers and woolhandlers are so important in the production of the nation’s
fleece, and who those shearers and woolhandlers actually were, who their families were, and with a proud and respectful attention to detail. It was done with a trademark cheek, and while he was fastidious in the correct pronunciation of people’s names, some would find themselves rebranded such as Golden Shears and World champions Paul Avery (“the smiling assassin”) and John Kirkpatrick (“Captain Kirk, captain of the Enterprise”). Both Koro and Mavis were followed across the Golden Shears stage over the years by Tuma, brother Punga and sister Aria, all taking places in competition finals. The couple’s second daughter, Korina, went into a professional career outside shearing. The family has been best known for the shearing operation which at

peak employs over 100 staff, with quarters just east of Dannevirke. The operation was noted for its promotion and tuition of youngsters entering the industry and assuring the well-being of hundreds from the UK and other European countries while working in New Zealand. The Chairman of Shearing Sports New Zealand, Sir David Fagan, said the global world of shearing was “rocked” by the news of his death. He said Koro’s involvement and commitment was the fullest in every way and all within the industry and sport were united in sharing their condolences with the whanau. “It’s a big loss,” he said. Ultimately, Koro would have a town hall send-off, Dannevirke’s town hall being absolutely packed with dozens outside unable to get in, before he arrived from Makirikiri Marae.

Snow Quinn - Snow embellished the Gold Brian Quinn’s achievements with handpiece in hand have been documented over the past sixty years by writers trying to capture the legend from a renowned reluctant interviewee.
By Des Williams When Golden Shears celebrated its 30th anniversary in 1990 it was quite common for people to reminisce and express the sentiment, “When the Shears started in 1961 no one dreamed it would still be going thirty years later!’ Now here we are, it’s sixty years later and it’s still going strong. It may be fair to suggest much of the aura that became attached to Golden Shears in the earlier years came from the exploits of Brian ‘Snow’ Quinn, who won the open championship six times from seven attempts from 1965 to 1972. He came second to Bing Macdonald in 1966 and did not compete in 1969. Shearers from around the country made the annual pilgrimage to Masterton, wondering if this would be the year someone could wrest the purple ribbon from the tall man’s shoulders. Nobody could, and he retired at the early age of 31 to let others ‘have a go’. Then it became, “Will anyone else ever win the Shears six times?” Many thought, ‘No way!’ Thus, Quinn’s name and record remained at the forefront whenever the subject of Golden Shears came up for discussion. Until along came David, that is, because all records are made to be broken. Through the 1990s and into the new millennium [Sir] David Fagan turned six into sixteen.
Let us then give the last words to a writer with some inside running - his seven-year-old grandson, Rocky, who had to give a speech to his classmates last year about somebody famous:
Brian Quinn remained retired until the prospect of having a crack at the world championship in 1980 provided sufficient incentive for him to again polish up a couple of favourite combs. With mission accomplished, the 40-year-old again quietly faded away from the competition stage, save for a few celebrity occasions here and there. Though he did take to the boards again for many years as a shearing sports judge. Now less than a year away from an eightieth birthday, Brian (and Lyn) have spent the past 30 years on a block of land at Earnscleugh, on the outskirts of Alexandra. It carries a few hundred sheep that, under his expert management, produce a lambing percentage of most impressive numbers.
‘I am going to do a speech on my Grandad, Brian Snow Quinn. He is famous because he was the best shearer in the world. He started shearing sheep when he was 17. When he was 20 he went in lots of competitions and won lots of cups and ribbons. In 1980 he won the world championship and in 1981 went to Wellington to get an MBE medal from the Queen. ‘He shore thousands of sheep in New Zealand, Australia and England. Today he looks after 300 sheep and lambs. He still shears pet sheep for people. I think my Grandad is the best.’ Nobody at Golden Shears 2020 is likely to argue with you on that score, young Rocky!

Judging In a nutshell In all disciplines, a penalty system
for points is used; the lower the total the better.
WOOL PRESSING Competitors are judged on workmanship, safety and technique. Loading the press, tramping, pressing the bale, capping and completion of bale are the most important judging criteria. Bale target weights are set with penalties for being over or under weight. Time points are deducted at 1 point for every 20 seconds elapsed or part thereof.
WOOL HANDLING Judging is divided into two sections; Board (what the audience sees) and Wool Assessment. Board Judging Takes into account the tidiness and efficiency of the competitor, the throw and skirting of the fleece, plus the roll and placement into a fadge. Fleeces are ‘skirted’ for finer neck wool, stained side wool, short wool and for other faults as necessary. Skirtings are separated and placed in baskets. Wool Assessment Fleeces and oddments are removed from the board for assessment. Fleeces should be free of skirtings and each basket should have a different type of wool.
2019 Shearing Judges BACK ROW: Philip Morrison, Ken Macpherson, Ian Hopkirk, Paul Harris, Donald Macrae, Allan Grant, Greg Drew (Aust), Mark Barrowcliffe, Joanne Mead, Neil Sidwell
FRONT ROW: Kevin MacCallum, John Fraser, Graham McNae, Neil Fagan, Russell Knight, Richard France, Peter McCabe, Ronald King, Allan Pretious
Whole points are accumulated from the board and assessment judging.
11mm x 10mm x 85mm long (or the accumulation of smaller second cuts) accrues a 1 stroke penalty. The shorn sheep is judged for wool left on at the same penalty value as above. Skin cuts are also penalised.
Sealed times are set for each grade, from the shearer finishing to when the competitor should finish. Time points accumulate for the sealed time but increase five-fold past that time. Board, assessment and time penalties are added for the total points.
Penalty strokes on the board and from the pen judging are divided by the number of sheep shorn to give a quality points total. Time points are calculated at 1 point for every 20 seconds elapsed or part thereof. Quality points and time points are added together for the competitor’s total score.
SHEARING Competitors are judged while shearing and in the outside pens for overall quality. Shearing the sheep, a second cut or double cut of wool staple is penalised. A second cut of

With three disciplines within the industry (shearing, Wool Handling and wool pressing) a competitor who enters all disciplines at Golden Shears will automatically be entered in the Triathlon. Points are accumulated from the heats of each discipline and totalled, with the lowest points deciding the winner. The Triathlon is kindly sponsored by the NZSCA – New Zealand Shearing Contractors Association.
Pinfolds Pinfolds have a long history with the Golden Shears that goes back almost to the beginning of the competition, with Pinfold trucks carting the sheep in and out of the competition. Over that time, Pinfold’s drivers have got it down to a fine art, getting the stock delivered in time and with as little stress as possible for the shearers and sheep. Then carting them back once they have been through the competition.
Brian Lochore It was more than just New Zealand’s (and the world’s) rugby community that mourned the loss of Sir Brian Lochore, who died at his Wairarapa home on 3 August 2019 after a period of illness. “BJ” as he was known to all and sundry, is pictured above at the launch of the Golden Shears 50th jubilee book at the Woolshed, Masterton, in March 2010. An iconic New Zealander and farmer, he competed as a lower grade shearer at the first Golden Shears in 1961 and maintained a strong interest in the event. RIP Great Man
Masterton District Brass Band
It is important that the stock that is shorn is cleared from the yards before the next truck arrives with the next lot of sheep to be shorn.
The longest serving service provider to Golden Shears will complete it’s 55th year of erecting the shearing stand in the Stadium in 2020. A task that commences on the Friday prior to Golden Shears and finishes with the pull-down on the Sunday after the event - their service also extends to laying down of the wool pressing stage at the rear of the stadium.
Rain is the biggest challenge, as the sheep have to be completely dry for the competitors. To achieve this, Pinfolds designed custom-made covers to go over its trucks.
The Committee extend their gratitude to Band members, with a presentation to be made on Saturday afternoon.
The guys look forward to doing the Shears every year. Pinfolds proudly celebrate 100 years in business this coming May 2020.

Fifty years of Golden Shears: fifty years of service Golden Shears pays tribute to three of the architects of its longevity at the 2020 Golden Shears. When Bruce Christensen (70) and Gavin Tankersley (68) played in the Mikimiki school grounds in the early 1960s, little did they imagine a life time of association with Wairarapa’s premier event. Within a year or two of leaving school in the mid-1960s both teenage lads were ensconced alongside Murray Tomlin (72) from Taweru, in the machinery of the Wairarapa Young Farmer’s Club and Golden Shears. All three teenagers were willing helpers at the YFC night, originally the Wednesday night entertainment of the Make’n’Model, the Miss Golden Shears and the Blue-Ribbon shearing and Wool Handling events. They each eventually ascended to YFC leadership positions gaining places on the Golden Shears Committee, and each were very involved in the wool management and pressing during their early contributions to the annual competition. Bruce has been involved in the wool packing and pressing and tracking the different farm fleeces almost continuously for fifty years, although at the recent events he has handed on the actual physical wool pressing to the next generation. Both Gavin and Murray are past Presidents consecutively; Gavin from 1993 until the 1997 Championships, followed by Murray from 1998 until 2000. They oversaw a sea change of modernisations from the early 1990s, when operating on a ‘shoestring budget’ significant structural modifications were made. Inside the stadium saw the original shearing board modified and sheep chutes redesigned, and with international judging rules refined (from three to one judge per sheep), they were relocated from the outside
FROM LEFT: Murray Tomlin, Bruce Christensen and Gavin Tankersley tents into the stadium behind the enlarged shearing stand. Their review of sound and lighting saw many technical improvements, included large TV viewing screens introduced and ultimately placed above the shearing board. Outside the back entry of the stadium, the temporary tents covering the yards were replaced with generous funding acquired to fully cover the holding yards at the back entrance, steel flooring was acquired from the then recently closed Waingawa Freezing Works, and they concreted the same holding yards area for ease of use. Murray was particularly instrumental in the revival of the prestigious Wool Handling competitions at the Golden Shears; Wool Handling becoming a crowd favourite and coveted event at both national and international levels. Under their stewardship, Golden Shears renewed and reinvigorated itself and increased its value as a prestigious and professional event. While Bruce has remained a modest and reliable back room volunteer, both Gavin and Murray also made their mark on the international scene, first as Golden Shears team managers
to Australia. As President in the early 1990s, Gavin visited Armidale, NSW and Esperance, Western Australia and put much effort alongside his Trans-Tasman cousins to reintegrate the Australian test after the turbulent wide gear strikes of the mid-1980s and saw the birth of Sport Shear Australia during his tenure. Murray represented New Zealand as Manager to Millicent, South Australia 2005. His legacy has been co-developing the international Wool Handling rules that saw him eventually judging Wool Handling in Bjerkreim, Norway, at the 2008 World Sheep Shearing and Woolhandling Championships. On 7 March 2020, at the 60th Golden Shears, all three, Bruce Christensen, Gavin Tankersley and Murray Tomlin will receive their Fiftieth Anniversary badges to honour their lifelong contributions to the Masterton Golden Shears.

Wednesday, Thursday & Friday
Shenanigans
Juzzie will be entertaining both indoors and out at various times throughout the event on these days/ nights.
Shenanigans is one of New Zealand’s hottest bands. Specialising in elegant live performances. Shenanigans is a band seriously worth considering for the best possible wedding music that inspires non-stop dancing. In addition to weddings, we often play at charity events, corporate functions, catered affairs, and private parties.
Juzzie Smith is a ridiculously talented one-man band, based in Byron Bay Australia. Juzzie’s unique style is bluesy/folk mixed into a groove of its own. Marked by an amazing ability to play up to six instruments at once combining the guitar, harmonica and juggling percussion.
Friday Night
Shenanigans plays the best dance music ever written from the 1930 present, which includes Irish Classics, Country, Rock-n-Roll, Ethnic, Group Participation, and much more. In addition, we keep our repertoire as cool as we can by constantly learning everyone’s favourite songs. This hardworking Wellington wedding band spends a tremendous amount of time learning, reviewing, and
ultimately perfecting the music required for each engagement. We play everything live without the artificial computerised support that most of our competitors rely on these days. You will notice that Shenanigans performs every song with a Celtic fun twist.
Juzzie Smith has had the honour of performing to both international and national crowds from Byron Bay Blues Festival to Edinburgh Fringe Festival, sharing his raw warm vocals with a simple message of loving life. With over 120 million views on social media and topping the blues iTunes charts around the world Juzzie Smith is an act you won’t want to miss.

Golden Shears 2020
A PROUD HISTORY OF MAKING VACCINES IN NEW ZEALAND FOR OUR CONDITIONS. In reflecting upon the significant milestone which is the 60 years that the Golden Shears has been the world’s premier shearing and wool-handling event, it is interesting to recognize the parallels between this truly iconic New Zealand event and MSD Animal Health, which has been a sponsor of the Golden Shears since its inception in 1961. Back then, MSD was called Trentham Vaccine Laboratories (TVL), and while the name has changed, what does remain the same and in common with the Golden Shears event is a business born and bred in New Zealand which is steeped in history but which has continually innovated and evolved to remain relevant and market leading today. For nearly 80 years our scientists have developed and made vaccines with the aim of improving the health and productivity of New Zealand’s farm animals. The first vaccine developed and available to kiwi farmers in the 1940’s was for the clostridial disease blackleg. Amazingly it was manufactured at the same Upper Hutt site that today is home to MSD Animal Health, New Zealand’s leading vaccine manufacturer. At the same site in 1968, the first 5-strain clostridial vaccine for NZ farmers was launched. And so was born Multine®, the original 5-in-1 vaccine which still remains the most widely used range of vaccines in New Zealand today.
trusted brands to remain at the forefront of the market. As well as developing and manufacturing the most extensive range of NZ’s leading vaccines, including Toxovax®, CampyVax®4, Salvexin®+B, Multine®, Nilvax®, Lamb Vaccine and Covexin® 10, this local technology not only benefits NZ farmers, but is now a significant export contributor, with MSD in Upper Hutt now exporting locally manufactured vaccines to over 60 countries around the world. MSD is also known for it’s COOPERS range of antiparasitic drenches and ectoparasiticides, including well known brands Alliance®, Scanda® and Magnum®. Made for New Zealand, in New Zealand. MSD brands are made specifically for New Zealand’s unique conditions and it is this which has made our brand synonymous with trust and the drive to help farmers achieve superior animal health. Ensuring New Zealand’s farmers continue to raise the bar in terms of sheep productivity and farm profitability. MSD is very proud of our enduring partnership with this iconic brand and we wish the Golden Shears all the best for another great event.
50 years later, and ongoing innovation in this Multine range of vaccines has seen our latest addition include the convenience and benefits of vitamin B12 - Multine B12, which has rapidly become the most favoured version of all the clostridial vaccines used on kiwi sheep farms. Focusing on keeping livestock healthier and farming more productive is what allows MSD

Shearers know their sheep “Be it the weight, the bone, the type of sheep or sometimes their attitude, shearers know good sheep when they work with them. Many new clients have come to Wairere as a result of recommendations from those that work with or have shorn, Wairere bred sheep. Wairere has sold many rams to Golden Shears winners and shearing sports competitors from all categories, who have become farmers themselves. From one end of New Zealand to the other, and around the world, Waireres have a reputation for being the type of sheep that shearers recommend and farmers want to farm. “I first shore at Wairere in 1991 and since then have shorn Wairere bred sheep in every corner of New Zealand. They are consistently good sheep, wherever I have found them”. Lawrence Aspinall. (Pahiatua)
