McKenzie’s Electrical 2000

Still got the spark after 20 years Quality craftsmanship, innovation, moneysaving technologies, an ethical workplace culture, and career opportunities for young people: it’s no wonder McKenzie’s Electrical 2000 is still one of Wairarapa’s most trusted and sought-after trade services.

“We do things like wiring, installing power points, relocating meters, commercial lighting, putting in CCTV camera, setting up solar PV systems – when it comes to electricity, there’s nothing we can’t do,” Dillan says.

This year, owners Russell and Carrollyn Keys and their tight-knit team at McKenzie’s celebrated 20 years in business.

“Every day is different – there’s always something new to learn.”

In October 2000, the Keys bought the Electrical part of McKenzies Flooring, starting out with a small operation from their house in Garrison St, consisting of two registered sparkies (including Russell), an apprentice, and Carrollyn looking after the accounts. Nowadays, McKenzie’s is in hot demand, providing electrical solutions for residential properties Wairarapa-wide, and for some of the region’s biggest commercial and industrial premises - schools, medical centres, supermarkets, retirement homes, and more. The Keys’ team has grown to comprise four registered electricians (including Russell), a journeyman electrician, and three apprentices – proficient in everything from wiring hot points, to installing brand new security systems, to fitting solar panels. Men @ Work caught up with McKenzie’s team members Dillan Wyse and Ben Pike on Cornwall Street, where they were wiring the new extension complex for Wairarapa Village – grateful for a fish and chip break after a hard morning’s work. Qualified sparkie Dillan, who started at McKenzie’s as an apprentice in 2014, says the variety of tasks makes for a fascinating and stimulating day at work.

Thermal imaging has become an integral part of McKenzie’s services - with three team members, including Dillan, working as trained thermographers. Thermography measures the heat generated by an electrical connection using an infrared camera – and can identify potential problems in the installation before a breakdown occurs. “It’s cool we can use the technology to prevent any big catastrophes for our clients,” Dillan says. “For some businesses, if their systems or equipment went down, they’d lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in one day.” As well as top-notch workmanship, a positive workplace is integral to McKenzie’s success. Russell and Carrollyn take pride in creating a caring, empathetic and equitable environment for their team – which includes offering flexible hours to accommodate family commitments. “McKenzie’s is a fantastic company to work for – extremely supportive and familyorientated,” Dillan says. “If you need a couple of hours off to, say, go to an event at your kid’s school, they’re

Dillan Wyse (left) and apprentice Ben Pike. happy for you to do that and come back to work.”

Gateway programme, which helps senior students transition into the workforce.

The Keys are also passionate about training young people in the electrical trade whether that’s offering work experience to secondary school students, or training apprentices.

Eventually, in his final year at college, he was offered an apprenticeship – and is working towards his electrician’s qualification through The Skills Organisation.

McKenzie’s also pays its apprentices the Living Wage - one of the only trades employers in the country to do so. While a student at Chanel College, Dillan’s co-worker Ben started out doing weekly work experience at McKenzie’s through the

“It’s been great so far – I’ve really enjoyed it,” Ben says. “I love the feeling of completing a job – looking around and seeing all the wiring looking pristine and clean.”

Hadlow Preparatory School

The Men Team at Hadlow – from left Andrew Osmond (Principal); Jim Wyeth (Caretaker); Charles Kendall (Hub Four teacher and leader); Robert Cloutman (Hub Four teacher); Mannie Marara (Chaplain and Director of Religious Education) and Peter Mele (Hub Three Teacher and Leader).

Positively prepared for the future Meeting up with the male members of Hadlow School in Masterton provides an insight into the school’s core values, learning about its daily life, enjoying a variety of wit and humour and seeing that it’s a great family-focused atmosphere which the pupils thrive in. Andrew Osmond has been Hadlow’s Principal for two years and feels very much settled into the school life. “We have a fantastic school and we are growing great kids.” Committed to the core purpose of reading, writing and maths, Andrew believes if the foundation for learning is fostered from a young age and children are given a range of opportunities to find their passions, a person will succeed. Originally from Hawke’s Bay, Andrew was Principal of St George’s School in Whanganui when he and his family made the move to Wairarapa. His passion for education and growing people is only equalled by his love of sport. He’s a keen road cyclist and has played and coached most sports. Jim Wyeth is Hadlow’s caretaker and declares “It’s the best job I’ve ever had!” He adores working among the beautiful grounds, enjoys the staff and loves the

children who often ply him with questions as to what he’s doing. “Every day is different. I can be a locksmith, a builder, then tend to the gardens, it’s a great job full of variety.” Jim has worked in the building industry for 16 years and then ran his own business ‘Jim of all trades’ before being tempted with the Hadlow job. A keen hunter, fisherman and tramper, Jim is President of ‘Central Search Dogs’, which trains search and rescue dogs. Charles Kendall has taught at Hadlow for 17 years. An old boy of Hadlow and Rathkeale College, he moved from Wellington to Carterton with his family at a young age. He graduated with a Bachelor of Teaching from Otago University and Hadlow was his first teaching job. “My physical footprint has always been at Hadlow, but the teaching world is forever evolving and there’s always new kids to teach and develop.” Charles’ interest in music (he plays guitar, bass guitar and drums) has meant he’s the ‘go-to’ person when it comes to producing productions and events. He also has an interest in IT and leads the technology department at the school. Robert Cloutman has a wealth of

experience teaching in different places. Trained at Wellington Teacher’s College, his first job was in social welfare. He taught in Nigeria, met his Irish wife in Saudi Arabia and after marrying in Ireland, they returned to set up home in the Mangatarere Valley, west of Carterton. He then taught at international schools in Oman in the Middle East and in Gabon in central Africa. These days he teaches between Hadlow and Masterton Intermediate. Robert has an inherent love of reading and he shares this avidly with his pupils. He has established the Hadlow Maths Club and runs an after-school class two days a week, for children wishing to upskill their learning. “The key word is learning. If we can foster a love of learning, we’re achieving great things for the kids.” Mannie Marara is originally from Zimbabwe; he completed his teacher training at Brighton University in England. A keen sportsman, Mannie was a competitive sprinter with an eye on the Commonwealth Games. However, he found financing a sporting career was difficult and chose teaching. In New Zealand, he taught at St George’s School in Whanganui before moving to Hadlow at the beginning of 2020. Now the school’s

Chaplain, he is working on Anglican Studies towards a Diploma in Theology. “I just want to give back as I feel enormously blessed with my journey from Zimbabwe, via UK to New Zealand.” Explaining that he left an African country falling apart politically, Brexit was causing ructions in England, and so when he landed in New Zealand in 2009, he knew he was where he wanted to be. Mannie is married to Claire and they have two children aged 10 and 7. Peter Mele is the second-to-longest serving teacher at Hadlow (behind Trish Hepburn). Australian-born, he met his Wairarapa-born wife Wuss in London. They settled west of Carterton and had three daughters. “I never intended to stay in one school for so long, but Hadlow has been a terrific place to teach at.” He’s clearly highly respected. His pupils go about their work independently while he talks about his time at Hadlow, the changes and his observations, and theories on education. The move from ‘single-cell’ classrooms to airy openplan teaching spaces shared by several teachers, is praised by Peter, who enjoys the collegial support. “That support and a trusting leadership has meant we are very lucky in our environment.”

Choose Hadlow and give your child the best start. Inspirational and skilled teachers, state-of-the-art facilities and an innovative curriculum – fostering happy and successful children.

Kowhai Kitchen

Eastwood Motor Group

From left, Pete Clendon, Cordt Bensemann and Rod Carter.

Café owner Murray Jane behind the counter in his natural environment these days, Kowhai Kitchen.

Sunny café offering a welcoming environment and great food Early morning 4am starts are not unusual for Murray Jane. His 24 years at Premier Bacon in Carterton had him up early, volunteer fire fighting call-outs in Carterton were all hours and now he’s up early at his new business, Kowhai Kitchen on Masterton’s Church Street, creating delicacies, fresh sandwiches and wholesome savouries. The doors open at 7am. It’s a major life change for Murray and he’s relishing it. Kowhai Kitchen has morphed from the long-time Express Lunch Bar owned by Shelley and Gavin McAnulty, who are friends of Murray and his wife, Fleur. When Gavin died, Shelley encouraged Murray to take the plunge. “Shelley and I have a great rapport and I can’t thank her enough for all the help she’s given me.“ “There have been times in my learning

when my head felt like it was going to explode, and Shelley would calmly step in and explain. I am very grateful.” It’s quite a family affair. Fleur does the admin side of the business while their creative daughter, Litia, designed the décor and runs the social media side of promoting the business. Litia has introduced the kowhai flower, bright yellow, fresh, natural and welcoming – the yellow theme flows into other signage and decoration. Fleur was a familiar face at the Carterton Golf Club where she provided catering services. Murray has a great team in Kowhai Kitchen. Kowhai Kitchen sits right next door to the Masterton Foodbank, so at the end of the day if there’s any food left over, it gets handed over to be distributed. “I love that there’s no waste and everyone gets to try our yummy food,” says Murray.

Selling driven by quality, enthusiasm and trust The sales team at Eastwood Motor Group share a lot in common. They are all locals, they all enjoy people, and most importantly, they all have a passion for the Kia, Isuzu, and Suzuki brands. As Rod Carter points out, “there is a lot of enthusiasm at EMG and that comes from the brands you are selling”. Pete Clendon Pete has always had an interest in cars, to the point where he and wife Kathleen were competitive rally drivers for five years. A shearer and then wool buyer, Pete more recently moved into vehicle sales, joining EMG two years ago. “I feel it has the best range of brands and has a really good reputation for its customer service.” “The Isuzu Ute is really popular with farmers which has allowed me to continue my relationship with them.” The couple’s son Jackson, 17, is now a promising rally driver sponsored by EMG, who has just won the two-wheel-drive section of the Bay of Plenty Rally. Rod Carter Working as a team has always been one of the things Rod has most enjoyed about working for EMG for over ten years. “We all sell all the brands, so we all work together for what is best for the

customer.” Born and raised in Wairarapa, Rod still gets recognised from his time as a butcher and running Kuripuni Fish Shop. “People like to see a familiar face. Selling is about building relationships and trust.” An American classic cars enthusiast, Rod has enjoyed seeing the huge evolution of EMG’s brands over the past decade in design, style, comfort, safety and technology. Cordt Bensemann Cordt is a self-confessed motor tech geek, something he shares with many of his customers. He grew up in Masterton, joining EMG three years ago. One thing all three brands share in common is their reliability, Cordt believes. “Reliability is a huge factor when purchasing a new car, when you buy a Suzuki, Kia or Isuzu you are buying a brand you can trust, they just go and go.” The family-feel at EMG is one of the things he most likes about the dealership. “Everyone here is close and we like to have fun, but we are also very professional as well.“ “We understand purchasing a new car is very important to our customers and we strive to make this experience as easy and enjoyable as possible .”

Don Luciano Café & Roastery

Blue Bucket Cleaning Services

Marvin Guerrero with his beans roasting in the elegant Probat coffee roaster – a marvel of German engineering which he imported specially for his café.

Taste the world at Don Luciano in Masterton We may not be able to travel far at present but at Don Luciano Café in Masterton, you can let your taste buds (and imagination) go wild. Marvin Guerrero and his team, some of whom come from many parts of the world, cook up a veritable storm of flavours in the dishes they create. This is augmented by home-roasted coffee – the smell permeating throughout the café making you want to linger. It’s easy to loiter too, whether it’s to have a coffee, a glass of wine in the evening with maybe a yummy tapas dish or to listen to one of the local musicians, which frequent Don Luciano. Marvin gets his coffee beans from Honduras, his homeland in Central America. Some beans also come from Guatemala and Columbia. “I’m making up fine blends in a variety of flavours. ‘Gracias’ is a salute to my wonderful life, ‘The Don’ is a nod to my grandfather, and ‘Mama Dora’ is named after my mother, Theodora.” It’s quite a personal roasting. Marvin is a colourful, warm and engaging character, whose very presence lights up the café as he enthusiastically greets his customers with “hola”. One is immediately enveloped by the jovial atmosphere of the cafe where the walls are painted the pastel shades of his homeland, and colourful jewellery and other products from Central America are for sale.

Don Luciano, Marvin’s grandfather, was a farmer who grew coffee in La Esperanza, in the Intibucá region of Honduras. His benevolent gaze stares from a photo which hangs in the café. When very young, Marvin was encouraged to regularly make his grandfather coffee. “The beans were ground by hand into a cloth and hot water was poured through it. Doing it three times got you a good brew and just warm, not too hot,” recalls Marvin. The smell of this freshly brewed coffee stayed with him as he grew, which he had to do quickly, as he lost his father when just six years old. His mother, a teacher, worked three jobs to raise her family of four children. Don Luciano became an important father figure for the young Marvin. At 21, Marvin lived in Italy where he was absorbed by the coffee culture and the finer ways of producing the popular brew. In 2005, he spied New Zealander Juliet King doing her OE in Europe and as a couple they eventually made their way to New Zealand and Wairarapa, where Juliet was raised. She makes the jewellery on display in the café and she and Marvin revel in offering a piece of Central America in Masterton. Pop in. You won’t regret it!

Mark Johnston, the owner of Blue Bucket with tools of the trade.

Wairarapa’s largest independent cleaning company The Blue Bucket Cleaning Services – ‘Blue Bucket’ as it’s affectionately known – has 18 years of cleaning experience in Wairarapa. The business grew from one person with a blue bucket and a van, into a company that employs 22 staff, has centralised premises in Masterton and is equipped to handle any job, no matter how big or small. In November 2019, Mark Johnston purchased it and is using his previous staff experience to bring together cleaners who offer great service. “Our team are up for any job, managing projects with the skill and experience clients expect. We clean schools, work sites, retail stores, medical rooms and private residences plus many more.” Mark explains not being a franchise makes Blue Bucket very affordable and he is keen to provide an obligation-free quote.” All staff are police checked, wear company branded uniforms, Blue Bucket carries

Public Liability insurance and uses environmentally-friendly products and follows the necessary Health and Safety procedures. For Mark, it’s a total change of work landscape. He has been in customer service for many years mainly involving multi-site management. Originally from Christchurch, when he first came to Wairarapa, he commuted for five years but then happily took up a role closer to home as manager at Noel Leeming in Masterton. The previous owner of Blue Bucket used to clean the store and they got talking. Purchasing an established company with goodwill and a strong customer base, has been great for Mark, and he’s putting his skills to good use. “Whatever business you are in, it’s customer service that’s number one. As cleaners we know how important our service is. The only time you notice it, is when it’s not done.”

MUCH, MUCH MORE THAN A PIZZA PLACE – IT’S A DEN OF TASTY FOOD, FUN, GIVING VALUABLE EMPLOYMENT LESSONS AND PROVIDING LIFE OPPORTUNITIES The motto ‘Effort Brings Reward’ could never have been so apt than at Hell Pizza in Masterton. A young staff of 12, led by 18-yearold James Mitchell enthusiastically go about their business creating delectable pizzas in a fun gothic atmosphere, which cannot help but make you smile when you take in the colour scheme, signage and décor. James is ably supported by 16-year-old Ashton Cooke, the duty manager, a Y12 student at Chanel College just completing his Level 2 NCEA and who’s brother, Jacob, was a past store manager at Hell Pizza. “I love the fast pace, hussle and the chances I’ve had to learn on my own, starting as the ‘kitchen bitch’. I guess I showed initiative and was rewarded for that,” says Ashton. When he leaves school he wants to take on an electrical apprenticeship. He’s also a keen power-lifter gaining 2nd place in the NZ Nationals this year. Being rewarded for their hard work is what owner William Keedwell is strong on. When employing the young staff he’s keen to give them a chance, to enable them all to individually grow and this has been enhanced by regularly creating fun together, out of work,

celebrating the business success. James Mitchell is a qualified glider pilot and Rathkeale College student. He has worked at Hell Pizza just under two years and William encouraged his potential leadership skills from day one. Beginning as a delivery driver, James is now store manager. He is also the President of Youth Glide NZ and is hoping to attend Nelson aviation college when Level 3 NCEA exams are finished.

Skydiving has been one exhilarating reward outing, so has karting and paintball. “When you all have fun together you bond, you work hard together, and it feels great as a team,” says William. Who himself, worked through the ranks of Hell pizza, since the store opened in 2011. Becoming the local Hell Pizza franchise owner in 2018. Open daily 10am – 9.30pm and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights, he feels it’s important that the place emanates fun and vitality. “Getting kids from school gives them great employment opportunities, hones leadership skills and I love helping them mould into jobs. Ticehurst Construction and Design

Wairarapa Mobile Media Blasting

Owner Craig Ticehurst on the job.

Highly skilled construction team at the ready Whether you’re longing for a specifically designed dream home, or to add extra flair to your current dwelling, Craig Ticehurst and his team can bring your ideas to life. Craig has been director of Ticehurst Construction and Design since 2015, along with partner Kerrie Sutton, after buying his parents’ Carterton-based company, Steve Ticehurst Building. Steve founded the business in the 1970s, with Craig coming on board as an apprentice in 1991. Nowadays, Craig leads his own team of carpenters, able to turn their hand to an array of competencies - new home builds, renovations, extensions, kitchen and bathroom design, decks, fencing and building inspections, to name a few. “We do everything from installing new hardware on a door, to building a new house from scratch,” he says. Craig says renovations make up the bulk of his work – and with the current building boom, and buoyant housing market, requests to makeover existing homes haven’t slowed down. “People want to add their flair and individuality to their homes. Some clients do have ambitious plans and grand designs - it’s great when people shoot for the stars, and we can

It’s always satisfying to hear customers say that was exactly what they wanted.” Craig employs a small team, including one apprentice. Many building companies only use subcontractors. Craig likes to have his own team. “Having the diverse range of work means our staff need to have more than just a basic set of skills and need to excel in a lot of different areas of the building trade. This they do well. “It’s good to have your own team – and be able to teach apprentices, instilling in them the standards you want them to meet, and get everyone on the same page. Evan Morgan with his vehicle which tows the mobile blaster to clients throughout the lower North Island.

Having a blast! Evan Morgan and wife Katherine are the team behind Wairarapa Mobile Media Blasting - an eco-friendly, dustless blasting service covering residential, industrial and automotive surfaces. It’s the only one of its kind in the region. Wairarapa Mobile Media Blasting uses a wet abrasive blasting process – using water and an abrasive media (made from 100% recycled bottle glass or garnet), all combined within a blast tank. Depending on the type of surface at hand, different pressures are applied. During the process, the water encapsulates the abrasive along with the coating being removed. This falls to the ground for easy collection. What is especially good is that no toxic dust plumes, or ignitable sparks, are generated. The equipment is self-contained on a purpose-built trailer and can be used on any type of surface such as wood, brick, metal, and concrete. “No job is too big or small,” Evan says. He loves the variety of work. “One day, we could be removing rust, paint and

body filler from a classic car, the next day removing graffiti from a brick house, and the next, blasting industrial steel beams, iron gates or bridges.” Evan discovered dustless blasting while watching the TV show ‘My Classic Car’ on the Discovery channel. “I did some online tutorials and a lot of research and found there was nothing like it in the Wellington region. We saw a niche and moved on in.” Clients have been impressed not only with Mobile Media Blasting’s environmental conscience, but by its timely and efficient service. Evan is particularly sought-after by car restorers - as the water used in the blasting process keeps surfaces cool, which eliminates the risk of warping. Evan also uses a rust inhibitor that prevents any flash rusting for up to 72 hours. “Feedback has been fantastic. Customers love that we come to them saving time and transport costs.” Wairarapa Mobile Media Blasting is offered anywhere in the lower North Island.

We are a dustless mobile surface preparation company that services the entire Wairarapa region. Automotive • Residential Industrial

Wairarapa’s Marquee and Event Hire Specialists.

When Dutch-born Johan van Rijn arrived in Wairarapa and secured a job as a fitter welder, he looked around the community and liked what he found in the members of the Reformed Congregation of Ponatahi. The church and school are based in the former Home of Compassion buildings in Howard Street, Carterton. He says the community were so welcoming, he instantly felt at home. In 2009, Johan married Emily Lauridsen, whom he’d met in Taranaki, and today they have four children. They enjoy their church involvement and wanted to give back to the community in some way. They purchased a building in Carterton’s shopping centre and have created a café/ drop-in centre, ‘The Little Haven.’ Sitting next door to the popular Balter Bar, Johan had totally refitted the building, including adding strengthening steel beams where he says his trade skills came in handy. The walls are painted in several shades of grey and contrasted with brightly coloured red tablecloths and flowers it gives a cheerful and welcoming air. Soft music, the sound of coffee brewing and a bookcase with some interesting thought-provoking literature in it, completes the peaceful atmosphere. But not quite – there’s Johan and Emily who greet you warmly. Coffee and tea are always on offer and Emily bakes treats like biscuits and

chocolate muffins as a welcoming gesture. The Little Haven is open each Friday from 9am – 3pm with lunch at noon. Among the popular dishes are pumpkin soup and curry and rice. What Emily cooks up, often is dictated by what food has been donated by people. People drop in vegetables, home baking or in a recent case, monster pumpkins (hence the soup.) Johan loves discussing his faith (keep an eye out for his regular advertorials in Midweek) and he holds Sunday afternoon sessions every second Sunday at The Little Haven. A basic service is offered and then people can question and discuss life. This has attracted some regulars keen to discuss the ‘next chapter’. Johan is open in claiming that the Bible changed his life for the better. Describing himself as ‘not the nicest of people’ when he was younger, he realised he felt empty inside. Once he discovered Jesus, that all changed, and he says he found a purpose to his life. “It made me realise we are not just here for ourselves.” The Little Haven has also taken on the role of holding the Golden Oldies monthly lunch each third Thursday. Johan and his wife do the cooking and they are proud to be able to carry on this Carterton tradition, started many years ago by Norma Chew.

Total Care Flooring Design

Gawith Burridge Lawyers

John Hunter.

A new direction – flooring design John Hunter is not one for letting the grass grow under his feet, but he is letting floor coverings do so. He enjoys fresh challenges and keeping himself busy and has recently purchased a share of Total Care Flooring Design in Masterton with business partner, Daniel Neilson. On 1st September this year Total Care Flooring Design, previously owned by Tim McKay for 23 years, was sold. John and Daniel have inherited a team of 10 individuals, all highly experienced in the flooring industry. Daniel has been installing flooring products for 16 years. The company is supported by four contract installing teams and a couple more on-call for bigger commercial installs. With the booming building industry in Wairarapa, they are all kept very busy and John admits he’s hit the ground running! He’s rapidly learning about the difference between wool and nylon carpets, how they are manufactured, and where they are sourced. Wooden overlay planks are popular, compared with vinyl, and he has quickly realised he has to be one step ahead of design trends. Luckily, the team are there to lead him. There’s Penny and Kerry, the front of house/admin team; Phil and Tony, who do the site visits, quoting and measuring; Jason is an ex-installer who has become the install manager; Colin is the storeman

who also does some of the more tricky jobs such as TerraFlake covering (gritty overlays in public areas); Adrian is a third year apprentice and Shae and Jamie are on apprentice trials. John is well-used to retail. From Martinborough, he spent 11 years in the Mitre10 store there, and four years at the Stihl Shop in Greytown. The commitment to this latest business venture has meant he has taken a back step as a volunteer fireman – he served the Martinborough brigade for over 16 years and another five years with Wairapara Rural Fire. His interest in fire engines has him restoring two appliances. One is a 1948 V8 Ford open cab, the other a 1954 Denis, ex No.6 from the Lower Hutt Fire Brigade. He has tinkered with machinery all his life and loves the Rolls Royce engine in the 1954 model. John trained as a printer with the Government Printing Office and then travelled the North Island doing rural work, returning to Martinborough in the 1990s. The large Total Care Flooring Design showroom on Masterton’s Dixon Street is welcoming and John encourages people to come and talk over their flooring needs with his team. “Come in and browse and learn about the huge range of flooring available.” He acknowledges it’s not a straightforward decision and wants people to be comfortable asking the hard questions.

Jason Ireland

Showcasing Wairarapa one frame at a time Jason Ireland loves Wairarapa. So much so, he’s created a business, Property Tour NZ which showcases the region, ranging from real estate, to the facilities available and the awe- inspiring scenery. Think Waiohine Gorge, Castlepoint, Cape Palliser. He will photograph or video whatever is needed and turn it into a winning production. Born and bred in the region. “Wairarapa is the ideal place for an entrepreneur. You can test an idea here. This is the place to do it. It’s ripe for ingenuity and development.” Walking the talk - “If you believe you can do it, you will!” He sets personal goals wanting to be better, striving to improve and always growing. Property Tour NZ is a perfect example of this thinking. Jason managed the music venue King Street Live in Masterton a few years ago. When that closed and he found himself looking for work, he got creative. He merged his interests - music, architecture, and photography, taught himself how to edit and use a drone and Property Tour NZ was born.

A Video and Photography Specialist, he is now the go-to man when real estate agents and private sellers want to market their properties. A carefully crafted video, overlaid with music, taking you on a tour through the house, successfully inspires buyers. It’s especially ideal for overseas buyers who can get a good visual handle on the property they are interested in. Since turning his passion into a business four years ago, Jason estimates he has helped sell several millions of dollars’ worth of property in Wairarapa. Around 260 houses per annum. He equally enjoys showcasing both the historic and the clean lines of contemporary houses. “Each property, all sizes and age, emanate their own special type of ambience and that’s what I set out to reflect. Sometimes, it can be in a single clever photograph but more often in a video which allows people to take that personal journey themselves through the property.

Woodhaus Joinery Ltd

One Agency The Property Specialists

Andrew Woodhouse in his Carterton workshop.

Woodworking – a lifetime passion

Tim Falloon.

Andrew Woodhouse laughs at his name. It fits so well with his profession – that of a joiner and craftsman. Anything made of wood enthuses him and he loves working with the medium, but his real passion lies within designing and creating from scratch.

One Vision: One Dream: One Name: One Agency

“It’s the smell, the feel and its living reaction to outside influences.” He was raised on a Bideford farm, just out of Masterton, and he recalls always being around wood as a child. “Dad had fencing timber laying around which I was always cutting into, making everything from aeroplanes to tree forts.”

some vital experience and then the call for home became too much and he returned to Wairarapa. “You just know in yourself when it’s time to come home.” It’s been the best move for him. In July 2018, he began his own business, Woodhaus Joinery, and has found a large building in Carterton to rent as a workshop. He has gathered an array of woodworking machines including some from the late Peter King’s company, ‘King’s Fourth Generation Woodworking Co.’

After having spent a year at Wanganui’s School of Design, Andrew completed his joinery apprenticeship at Rigg-Zschokke in Masterton, during which time he came 2nd in a national Customwood competition by building a full scale, all but working, set of DJ Turntables, mixer and headphones, from an 18mm MDF sheet.

Andrew enthusiastically runs his hand along the computerised CNC router/cutter which came with a huge range of tool holders and profile cutters. Then there is the Felder Over and Under thicknesser/ planer. Its modern spiral cutter head runs so quietly compared with the older machines, but at heart, it’s the older machinery which Andrew loves. It takes him back to the era of the old-school joiners and the hands-on tools of the trade.

He stayed on at Rigg-Zchokke another four years, soaking up the wisdom and experience from the older craftsmen, learning traditional techniques and skills that are so rarely seen in the Industry these days. He then headed to Melbourne. His first job was building cabinets which led him into installing.

Andrew is working alongside architects who have seen his work. He is gaining a reputation for his kitchen cabinetry but equally loves the one-off jobs. “I love when people bring in an image or idea of what they want, then it’s up to me to come up with the materials and methods to make it happen.”

“It was a great job and good money.” One of his bosses liked what he saw in Andrew and eventually he became their quality assurer for all joinery being installed. He spent seven years in Melbourne, gained

Over the past five years he has taught himself to Tig weld. “I love working with metal too and it has become a very handy skill to have when it comes to manufacturing custom pieces.”

Tim Falloon is one of a two-person real estate agency in Wairarapa – One Agency – a catchy name, with an experienced team, who collectively and comprehensively know and understand Wairarapa. Tim joined Ondy Herrick in 2019 to offer their combined real estate experience with a fresh face. They are based at The Totara Business Hub, 407-409 Queen Street, Kuripuni. From large scale farms to lifestyle properties, suburban homes, and neat urban sections, they were excited to be working with people looking for a new lifestyle, or to enter the Wairarapa market. They were especially enthused to be working with new families choosing to make Wairarapa their home and with businesspeople who can now run operations locally, commuting part-time to central bases in the city. Tim describes recent real estate as a “feeding frenzy” having sold multiple properties in the past month. Tim says One Agency has a ‘boutique feel’. He and Ondy work closely with their clients, creating a bond which helps understand individual needs.

Tim is part of a fifth-generation farming family at Bideford, north of Masterton. He has been a real estate agent for the past 22 years, gaining his AREINZ through Massey University as part of his studies towards a Diploma of Business Management. He had farmed up until then and now son, Simon, is farming. Tim has sold upwards of $200m worth of property over the years and he enjoys sharing his experience with emerging salespeople. When not on the real estate trail, Tim takes art classes, is a member of the Wairarapa Singers and helps his son on the farm. Married to Sue for 45 years, they have three adult children and five grandsons. The One Agency brand is fresh and striking and widely respected internationally. Based in Australia, One Agency moved across the Tasman to New Zealand where The Property Specialists picked it up and became one of the foundation stones for the Kiwi operation. Growing rapidly, One Agency The Property Specialists have since spread throughout New Zealand, Wairarapa being one of the latest areas.

Breadcraft

Innovative bakery exploring new direction and techniques. Food that’s good for people and good for the planet There’s always room for improvement, so despite Breadcraft Wairarapa’s highly successful nearly 80-year history, the company has appointed world-class baker, Ralph Thorogood, as its Process Improvement Manager. Ralph moved from Auckland with his wife, Kristina and two young children at the beginning of this year to act as a “technical resource” as he’s described himself. His objective is to improve the baking processes, be a technical resource and examine ways to reduce waste, explore sustainable packaging for the future and be an active part of the apprenticeship programme to train the best bakers we can. The opportunity to work at Breadcraft and raise children in Wairarapa has been embraced by the Thorogood family. “The bakery produces a wide range of products and is hugely innovative. I may not have my hands in the dough anymore but it’s just as exciting.” “Baking has never been just a job to me, it’s a total passion,” says Ralph. So enthused with the profession. he has a room in his home housing his 200-plus baking book collection (the oldest dated 1903). The library is augmented with collectibles from the baking trade. These have been gathered during his time in several countries. It all started 38 years ago in a hot bread shop known as the Colonial Bakery in Auckland where Ralph began his journey. “We had two eight-tray deck ovens loaded with 96 loaves and we’d peel them in and out – we couldn’t bake them quick enough, there was such demand.” He said the smells and the busy shop excited him and he still remembers that early thrill. He served his apprenticeship with North’s Bakery which made bread by the oldfashioned bulk fermentation method. Once qualified in 1989, he went to the UK and worked for a large wholesale bakery and achieved his London City and Guilds Baking qualification. He had a stint in Los Angeles working for a bakery in North Hollywood. He loved the job and lifestyle, but the UK called again, and there he worked for a huge bakery which produced two million loaves of bread per week. “I had one of the Production Manager’s roles and it was full-on.” Back to New Zealand in 2002, Ralph joined the giant food company, Goodman Fielder, starting at their flagship bakery in East Tamaki in Auckland then moved into product development. The company manufactures and sells a wide range of food products (bread, milk, cheese, flour, cooking oils, spreads, baking ingredients, ice cream and snacks). Ralph was in his element and

Master baker Ralph Thorogood dressed for the part in Breadcraft’s bakery. he enjoyed the challenge of developing new products for the marketplace. After another stint in the UK and a few more positions in New Zealand, Ralph met the team from Breadcraft while working for Goodman Fielder. Ralph’s baking expertise has led him to be the Chair of the Baking Industry Research Trust (BIRT). He has held this position for over two years and is keen to foster and promote the scientific research of the baking industry. Another string to his baking bow is that Ralph is a judge in the Bakers, National Pie Competition. When he’s asked what makes the ‘best pie’ Ralph says pastry consistency, its flakiness, the filling, and the flavour of the gravy, are all paramount. Ralph has high praise too for the wide variety of breads made in New Zealand. “New Zealanders are open to new styles and flavours”. Breadcraft has always had a focus on creating a great culture and encouraging the best out of their staff. With passionate people like Ralph in the business as an active part of the apprenticeship programme, Breadcraft can’t wait to see what innovations the next generation of Breadcraft bakers will come up with.

My Vehicle Maintenance

Owner Ari Te Tau and mechanic Jono de Graaff.

Masterton’s newest vehicle workshop You must be driven with optimism to open a new business in level 3 Covid-19 lockdown and that’s exactly what Ari and Rachel Te Tau did in May 2020. Ari is a qualified mechanic with 13 years’ experience. He drove past an empty workshop at the rear of the Caltex Solway Service Station on his daily commute and dreamed about starting up his own business - something he had always hankered about doing. He approached Kala and Kevan Dudson, who own the service station, and they were full of encouragement helping the young couple set themselves up, to the extent they built a foyer and office area for them, which opens out into the west-facing light and sunny workshop. Rachel is a nurse but has stepped back from her profession to help Ari get established. She does all the reception and admin. The couple have three young children aged 8, 3 and one year. Rachel says she is blessed with great family support. Ari spent several years at Goodyear in Masterton, so he knows a lot about tyres. His apprenticeship was completed at TRC Toyota and he has also worked with heavy diesel machinery at Higgins.

It’s scary how many people rely purely on WOF checks and don’t do anything in between.” In the short time they have been in business, it has been very busy. So much so, they have employed another qualified mechanic Jono de Graaff who has moved with his family from Upper Hutt to Wainuioru. Jono and wife Chloe also have three children aged 7, 3 and three months, so there’s a lot in common with the two families. Their workshop has two hoists and the message the mechanics want to get out is to do preventative maintenance on your vehicle. “It’s scary how many people rely purely on WOF checks and don’t do anything in between,” says Ari. “At least let us check your battery and tyres. We’ll do that for free.”

Wairarapa Mitsubishi

Wairarapa branch a top Diamond Dealer – it’s official Covid-19 has not stopped Brent and Tracey Cooper and the staff at Wairarapa Mitsubishi basking in the glory of achieving the highest honour Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand can bestow on a dealership – being named a Diamond Dealer. In late May of this year, instead of holding its annual awards evening together with people, Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand livestreamed the event to its 56 dealers. Wairarapa Mitsubishi’s 17 staff and families gathered in the showroom in Queen Street, Masterton, to hear they had been named one of eight 2020 Diamond Dealers in New Zealand. The Diamond Dealer Award recognises outstanding performance in every aspect of a business – sales, customer satisfaction, finance, service, parts sales and vehicle presentation. This is not the first time Wairarapa Mitsubishi has featured in the national awards, Brent winning the Managing Director of the Year Award in 2017. This came only two years after buying the former long-standing McKenzie Motors in Masterton. Brent is a former diesel mechanic from Eketahuna who ran his own business there for 10 years. These days he’s turning heads in the car dealership world. Brent said winning the Diamond Dealer Award is special because it recognises the effort and commitment of everyone involved with the business. “It is the highest achievement available as a Mitsubishi dealer. No matter what role each staff member has, they all played a part in winning that award. The office staff know each customer by name, the parts team keep everything well stocked and the groomers and yardmen keep everything

Brent Cooper with some of his top selling vehicles. neat and tidy. We are one family and couldn’t have achieved the award without being a team.” Brent especially thanks his wife, Tracey, whom he says is an integral part of the team both at home and in the business. Wairarapa Mitsubishi has been on a sharp upward curve ever since the Coopers took over the business in 2015. Brent attributes part of their success to the Triton Ute, the top selling utility vehicle in Wairarapa for the past two years. “The Triton is one of the

best Utes on the market and is in the top three brands sold in New Zealand in recent years.” All up Mitsubishi has seven vehicle models from which to choose from. Brent concedes the lockdown did impact business, but since restrictions lifted, they have been extremely busy. “Parts and service fired straight out of the gate, and not long after that, sales picked up again to pre-lockdown levels.” For Brent and his team, there’s no greater

satisfaction than seeing a customer drive off in their new Mitsubishi – the name is synonymous with life in New Zealand and he’s pleased to continue that tradition. “A lot of people have childhood memories of their family owning a Mirage or Lancer. It’s a great reliable brand and it’s great to see it forging ahead.” “No one knows the future, but rest assured, we will be giving the same high level of service to customers for years to come.”

He’s an aerial and satellite dish technician which makes what seems a minefield to most, an easy task and makes TV reception work smoothly. Sean enjoys troubleshooting a problem too, sorting out the problem and he likes to go that extra mile with mounting screens on walls and ensuring cables are tidied away. He brings 14 years of experience to each job, assisted in administration by Caroline Nyboer. A lot of the work isn’t just fixing problems either but installing the communications systems in houses, including home theatre systems. Sean recommends contacting him first when a house is being built to ensure the correct cabling is installed. Owners of newly built homes are often disappointed to discover the house has been wired to a standard plan which is not suitable. Sean can rectify this or better still, can customise the cabling for the new home in the first place. He feels televisions are a little simpler

than they were a few years ago but agrees, just the push of the wrong button, and you’ve got trouble. He has repeat customers who rely on his availability and ease of service. Wairarapa’s geography is a challenge for television reception and Sean is happy to offer the alternatives to achieving great reception. Over the years Sean has found everything from ride-on mowers and egg incubators have affected reception! Hills and lines of trees can be a particular problem, and older satellite dishes often need parts replaced or realignment too, he says. “Generally, I’ve got a good idea of what the problem is when I visit. Most jobs can be completed in one to two hours.” Sean can set up Smart televisions to access Netflix, YouTube, and other streaming services or ‘non-Smart’ TVs with Chromecast or Apple TV, so that internet content can be viewed. Sean also looks after businesses, and provides solutions for rural broadband customers through Wireless Nation. He has earned a reputation for being friendly and trustworthy, with customers regularly commenting on how impressed and happy they are with his work. Make life simple. Contact the Cable Guy.

Matt Spicer is a registered financial adviser and has offered advice, and a keen listening ear, to potential borrowers for almost 20 years and another 10 years in banking. This year, 2020, has been frantic and the busiest of his career. He’s just been awarded, for the sixth year in succession, the Premier Award - the recognition Loan Market gives to its top performing Advisers, reaching the highest target levels in loan settlements.

“The lending market is booming, and it has been further thrown on its head with the Covid-19 virus. We are seeing people from all walks of life wanting to borrow for many different reasons and under many circumstances.” Matt and his team, including Nikki Cox and Tania Finlayson, help guide people thought the maze of applying for finance. They sit and learn about people’s lives, hear their ambitions, and most importantly, their financial situation, to see if this translates to being eligible to borrow money. There’s a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ work before applying for money. “We sometimes have to advise people, to go and save a bit more, or consolidate, and then we’ll present their case to the bank or lender. It can be an intimate time for all and can be fraught with emotion. We’ve had years of experience in the finance industry and keeping up with the trends is vital to helping people get their end goal.”

Matt recommends people seeking mortgage finance should get pre-approval from a bank before settling on a house. “While the criteria has altered and been all over the place in these volatile times, there’s still a strict formula to lending.” Matt joined the Australasian Loan Market franchise six years ago. It carried on his work in assisting borrowers to purchase residential and investment properties, lifestyle blocks, building dream homes and re-financing. “We save our clients time, cost and hassle and they glean from our wealth of knowledge and experience.” An interesting trend since Level 4 lockdown has been the number of people with ‘unexpected’ money. These are funds they would have normally spent on overseas travel and people are now looking at doing something within New Zealand. This, and the low bank interest rates, has fuelled the lending market. On the home front, Matt’s full-on year was augmented when he and his wife, Lauren, got approval to open their long-held dream, He Pounamu Early Nurture childcare. Situated on their land at Dalefield, west of Carterton, Matt helps by starting his day early – lighting the fire to warm the centre and greeting the first arrivals. He sometimes does the ‘Pahi run’, to collect some of the children. When he needs a breather, you’ll find him admiring the sunrise at the family’s bach on the Mataikona coast.

Printcraft Design Hive

Printcraft Owner, Peter Watson.

Design, printing, signage and packaging creations by an expert team priding itself on being a local service Printcraft’s future is buoyant. From its Masterton base, the business has been running for 40 years. In recent times under the ownership of Peter and Sheryl Watson and before that, Lance Johnson. In his effervescent, eternally optimistic style, Peter Watson talks positively of the effects the Covid virus has had on Printcraft. The Watsons had only owned the business for six months and they took a nervous deep breath when the Covid virus struck early this year. They didn’t need to worry. Always a producer of high quality and well-designed packaging, Printcraft has picked up new customers, who pre-covid were using firms elsewhere and even off-shore. “Businesses are now being forced to look inward and they are liking what they find on their own doorstep,” says Peter. “The fact that they can talk to us face-to-face and actually touch and see the products we can produce, is having huge benefits. I had one new customer say they should have come to us years ago. This is not about strong-arming locals, it’s just showing them how

advantageous it is to use local services.” Printcraft produces a huge variety of work. Packaging and labels are on the rise, and Peter is expanding his signage offerings. During the Covid lockdown, he and his wife, Sheryl got involved in delivering food for WaiWaste, so when the organisation got a dedicated van for food pick up and deliveries, Peter offered to signwrite the vehicle. “It’s a great way to advertise your business and we can offer some very creative ways of doing so.” And, while Peter is all about promoting local, he’s also passionate about being sustainable. Printcraft has always been environmentally conscious and it’s notching up to another level with it’s campaign ‘Fight on Plastic’, offering people alternative sustainable solutions. The ultimate is a compostable product and that’s what they aim for. Peter’s 16 staff are highly valued by him too. Ranging from the designers to the print finishers and all in between, Peter is extremely proud of his team. Service is paramount and it is the amazing staff who make it happen.

Bargh & Gardner Aviation Ltd

John Bargh in his air tractor.

Variable rate aerial topdressing in all the right places Set atop a ledge on a South Wairarapa road sits John and Penny Bargh’s house with commanding views across the plains to the Aorangi Ranges. Immediately below is parked the distinctive yellow and blue aircraft – the Air Tractor official colours – aside its hanger and the airstrip. In the garden beside the house waves a windsock. One glance and John will know if he’s able to do his job that day. Wind is his enemy as a top-dressing pilot, that coupled with heavy rain and low cloud. John and his loader driver, Joshua Borgesson must be ready to take off for a job as soon as daylight approaches - if the conditions are right. It’s not a 9-5 job! John learned to fly at the Wairarapa Ruahine Aeroclub at age 15 and went solo on his 16th birthday, passing his licence at 19. While studying for his commercial licence and notching up the flying hours, he worked driving a bulldozer for his parents, John and Dawn Bargh. He started his first aerial topdressing job with Claude Stephenson Associated Farmers doing aerial work in Martinborough. He started his own business in partnership with Adrienne and Denis Gardner (John’s sister and brother-in-law). Bargh &

Gardner Aviation was established in 1984. Sadly, Denis was killed in a truck accident in 1985. The land John and Penny live on was part of a settlement farm purchased by John’s grandparents Charles and Linda Bargh in 1919. He had been at the Battle of the Somme and at Passchendaele. After purchasing the land from John’s grandparent’s estate, they built a house, hangar and airstrip. The Air Tractor is a tail wheel aircraft and a great plane to fly with good safety features providing an excellent spreading ability. Recently, John has added a variable rate system to the Air Tractor. Using aerial mapping and GPS, the system precisely applies fertiliser only where it is needed and dispersing the exact quantity required. John says the automated flow control reduces off-target application and manages fertiliser inputs. It avoids dressing non-productive areas, forestry blocks and waterways. In his spare time, John can be found flying vintage aircraft at Hood Aerodrome for the Wairarapa Flying Tigers and the Vintage Aviator.

Ladymead Kennels

Tick2Dig

It’s a great dog’s life at Ladymead and for the cats too! It is glaringly obvious Michael Macklin’s quiet, caring manner is picked up by the animals around him. Keen to please, they sit and gaze patiently when he approaches. His own two dogs obediently come to him and sit hopefully. Molly and Cruz appear to know they are ‘special.’ They were dogs, which clients could not have anymore. “It’s so tempting to collect dogs, I have to limit myself,” smiles Michael. When he purchased Ladymead Kennels at Opaki, north of Masterton in November 2018, he knew he had found his niche. “I’m not a particularly sociable person. I find animals’ company far more rewarding than people.” That’s not to say he doesn’t enjoy living on site with his wife, Kate, three-year-old Ryley and baby Samantha, age seven months. The family make up a good team in a job which demands round the clock care and attention. They have made major improvements to facilities, increased the car parking off the state highway and the gardens are attractively landscaped.

Peter Jackson.

Ladymead owner, Michael Macklin with Warwick the Dog.

During holidays, Ladymead can house up to 90 dogs, regularly there’s about 40. This includes over 20 ‘daycare dogs’ which people drop off each morning when they go to work. This is a new phenomenon in kennels says Michael and one which is proving increasingly popular. “It’s far healthier for your dog to be in the company of others. It’s so important for their sociability.” A typical day starts at 7am when the cats are fed. Yes, Ladymead also caters for cats – their covered kennels sit appropriately away from the dog enclosures. From 7.30am, the dogs are fed, kennels cleaned, and they are let into the yard for exercise. Then the day-care dogs arrive. By 10am, all animals have settled and in early afternoon they return to their kennels for rest. At 3pm, the process of feeding begins all over again. Michael grew up around dogs. His mother Sandra, breeds and shows Schipperkes – Belgian Barge dogs. She has been a past manager at Ladymead. Michael studied accounting and when returning to

Masterton, was thrilled to be able to purchase Ladymead. He and Kate are ably assisted by Carla Smith, who has years of experience working with many types of animals.

Ground penetrating radar service means no ugly surprises Peter Jackson has created a business, Tick2Dig, which he believed was much needed in Wairarapa. Using ground penetrating radar, he can check out an area where clients want to excavate, or have issues with water leaks. He can pinpoint the problem and give the all clear to dig. “Many times, I have customers who have spent large amounts of time, money and making a big mess, trying to locate cables, or locating that pesky leak, before in frustration, they come to us.” “With our equipment, we can tell them the entire underground story. It’s so much more cost-effective in the long term for us to be the first port of call.” The Tick2Dig company was formed by Peter and wife Jocelyn when the couple realised how poorly serviced Wairarapa was in underground locating services. “Locate before you excavate” was the message they wanted to get out. Peter, an electrician, could see it would be unviable for many contractors to invest in the necessary locating equipment but viable if one company independently provided the service. His hunch worked and he is on call for all manner of locating services. While the bread and butter of the business is

seeking out cables, piping and leaks, he’s had calls as diverse as locating human remains, finding old dump sites and to solve water leak problems which has left many heads scratching. Their equipment is a huge investment and some have a ‘Mad Max’ look about them. This is partly due to Peter’s ingenuity and skills to adapt his gear to particular conditions. He uses a variety of ground penetrating devices including a concrete scanner which penetrates deep into solid material. Tick2Dig is based in Carterton and Peter travels all over Wairarapa. Peter trained as an electrician in the New Zealand Army. Liverpool-born, he came to New Zealand as a two-year-old with his family. His father was also an army man and the family moved around, including time in Malaya. When Peter left the army, he planted a vineyard in Martinborough in 1986, ‘Linacre Lane.’ His 2000 Pinot Noir was picked in the ‘judges’ dozen’ for Martinborough wine tasting for the Capital Times newspaper. “It was a lot of hard work and I felt it became more a penance than a vocation.” Hence, his return to his real vocation and adapting to new technology. Give Peter a call. You’ll be amazed what he can reveal!

Wairarapa Windscreens

Maxim Business Consulting

Gavin Hodder.

Helping people make astute business and financial decisions Steen McGhie, left, and Euan Harris.

Mobile service and a new workshop gives great satisfaction A new location and an expanding clientele have made for an exciting year for Steen McGhie. During his first decade in business, Steen’s company, Wairarapa Windscreens, became well-known in the automotive glass repair industry for their rapid availability and attention to detail. Steen, and assistant Euan Harris, offer an inhouse and a mobile service - able to repair stone chips and replace windscreens at the client’s regular garage, saving time and petrol costs. This is especially convenient, as the client can have their windscreen repaired while their vehicle is being serviced or getting a warrant of fitness. Thanks to his and Euan’s precise handiwork, responsive service, and the magic of “word of mouth” referrals, Wairarapa Windscreens has steadily grown its customer base – stretching from Martinborough to Pahiatua. The extra business comes with a demanding workload, including an increase in clients with larger vehicles but Steen welcomes

and enjoys the challenge. “We’ve had more and more trucks coming in,” Steen says. “Trucks are a big job - but I always find the harder and more complex the job, the greater the satisfaction.” Steen can repair or replace windscreens for all makes and models of cars, vans and trucks. He stocks a comprehensive range of windscreens and if he doesn’t have the correct windscreen on the premises, he can quickly source one, usually overnight, including glass for rare vehicles. He is also able to help clients with insurance paperwork. While many of his customers use the mobile service, Steen and Euan carry out a lot of their work at #10 Papawai Place, Masterton, also the home of the Autogroom/Kooltintz team, Steen and Euan are enjoying the new building, “It’s very modern, airy and tidy,” he says. Autogroom/Kooltintz clients are welcome to have any windscreen repairs done while having their vehicles groomed or windows tinted and vice versa.

Have your windscreen replaced & tinted at the same time at AUTO GROOM Wairarapa Windscreens & Auto Groom working together to make it easy

Maxim is a noun. It is an astute decision made on the information to hand. Astute decisions are what Gavin Hodder has been helping business clients make, most of his working life. He has had extensive business experience in both Chartered Accounting firms and large corporates at a multinational level and local New Zealand level. Four years ago, he joined forces with Jason Osborne of the Osborne Group of accountants and established Maxim Business Consulting, a fresh and energetic business advice and management consulting company. Gavin and Jason have offices in Greytown and Masterton, making them easily available to clients throughout Wairarapa. They provide professional consulting services to rural, commercial, and private clients. Their mission is to assist clients in optimising their potential by providing advice on structure, management, risk mitigation, growth acceleration and general business counsel. Highly skilled and experienced in business management, analysis and process improvement, Gavin said he found clients would approach him for accounting assistance but in essence the service they required was more of business mentoring. He then attracted clients who had their own accountants for financial assistance but wanted that extra tuition in business development. “We are happy that people retain their own accountants, and we concentrate on

mentoring and strategic planning.” “Everyone should have a goal,” he says. “Otherwise, you can go wandering through business, working hard, and come to an end without any plan of how to step down.” Gavin believes succession planning is something that should be considered almost from day one. “So, that the ride is smooth and stress free. Knowing where you are heading and with some idea of the result, is imperative.” Gavin joined forces with Osborne Group in January 2012. Born in the Wairarapa, his father was with NZ Railways and the family moved, when he was five, to Horowhenua. The Hodders are long-time farmers in the Carterton area and Gavin and wife, Maureen returned to the region. Gavin has two grown children – both with their own businesses coincidently. Apart from Maxim Consulting, Gavin wears several community hats. He is Chair of Hospice Wairarapa, with a passion for improving palliative care in Wairarapa, including having palliative care beds in the region. “This would so ease the load who are on the journey of having loved ones in their final stages of living. He is working closely with the Wairarapa DHB and Five Rivers – the new medical complex in Greytown. Gavin is also Chair of Greytown Sport and Leisure. He has been involved with rugby at club, provincial and national levels, and these days manages the NZ Heartland under 19 and New Zealand Heartland XV teams.

Mobility Wairarapa

Affordable Sheds

The team at Affordable Sheds - Shayne McKinlay, Adam Kenny, Kymm Compton, Robbie Hunt, Ben Chase, Danny Smith, Johno Tait, Rewa Pomare, Clinton Rodgers, Russell Pickering, Fred de Lara-Bell, Brad Perry, Jess Stringer-Tait, Brendo Cabiles, Edizon Malana, Nick Olson and Nelson Castro.

A shed of your dreams and Treasure trove of mobility aids for every purpose to ensure independence Steve Taylor in his Masterton store.

There’s a certain irony that a motorbike sidecar racing champion owns and operates a mobility service, Mobility Wairarapa. There’s a yawning gap between the hair-raising breakneck speed of sidecar racing to the mobility scooters which max out at 15 kmh. Steve (Spike) Taylor looks quite at home however among the mobility scooters, walking frames, walking sticks and health aids in his showroom at the Masterton shop. A fitter and turner by trade, his skills translate beautifully to repairing and maintaining the scooters, which help multitudes of residents, with mobility problems, get out and about in the community. Steve’s sales and service centre has a busy backroom/workshop, and he can turn his hand to most repairs. Batteries failing is common, so are flat tyres and then there’s rear axles breaking or bearings needing replacing. He loves his work and likes that it is helping people. He enjoys seeing the scooters give people a sense of independence and freedom. Steve is used to being in the news with his sidecar racing. The winner of four New Zealand Championships on his 1000cc Suzuki, he also gained attention in 2015 when he donated a scooter to a strokeridden pensioner who had had his stolen off his front porch.

Born in Blenheim, Steve came to Wairarapa as a 12-year-old. He gained his trade at the Woburn railway workshops – “a great place to learn everything”. He then spent 12 years at Hansells in the engineering section and took time out to help raise a son and daughter. When working in a motorcycle shop, he met the woman who owned the Mobility Centre. She was wanting to sell and nine years ago, Steve took over. When not found ‘out the back’ fixing mobility aids, and not on his motorbike, Steve can also be spied at Henley Lake where he races radio-controlled boats. So, should you or a family member need help with movement around town or in the house, the Wairarapa Mobility Centre is a great place to visit. Stock carried includes: walkers, walking sticks, wheelchairs, crutches, reachers, stocking aids, shower stools, toilet set raisers, cushions, lumbar rolls, commodes, urinals, jar openers, arthritic help products and a full selection of daily living aids – and of course, the mobility scooters. The latest to arrive is a stylish turquoise one. “Once upon a time they used to all be red but now there’s lots of colours – yellow being the colour of the moment.”

Affordable Sheds have been operating in Wairarapa (and further afield) for approximately 20 years, with the past six years being run by Russell Pickering and Rewa Pomare. Last year they had the opportunity to purchase the business and are fortunate enough to have an amazing group of hardworking skilled people behind them.

The range of buildings they specialise in are (but not limited to) – mancave sheds, she sheds, car sheds, potting sheds, studios, sleepouts, offices, commercial builds or even one you could live in. Affordable Sheds has the shed to fit every purpose and occasion. There is no job too large, too small, or too quirky. “We specialise in custom designed buildings to suit the clients’ needs,” says Russell. A couple of their most recent ‘different’ jobs is a distillery, pool and spa commercial building and chicken layer barns. Russell has worked for the company for 16 years, so he knows a thing or two about sheds. They are the agents for Fair Dinkum Sheds, part of a national Franchise. Unusual Year Challenges Conventional Business Practices Reflecting on 2020 it has been a year that many would like to forget. Bring on New Year’s Eve and 2021 so we can put it all behind us I hear often. Businesses have been challenged in many ways by Covid. For us, what was shaping to be an all-time record year was scuppered from left field by events that most thought could not happen here. None of us have been here before and there is nothing to measure it against. Given 48 hours to prepare for lockdown was a daunting process. Foremost in our thinking was keeping the business financial and retaining staff as we would certainly need them when things returned to a new normal. Fortunately wage subsidies and business loans were the lifeline that enabled this to happen. Removing financial stress provided head space to consider how our business could become more resilient as we emerged from this. As a business we are strongly connected to many of the events that Wairarapa is famous for. From March these events tumbled like nine pins causing lost earning potential for us and many other local businesses. As an area of New Zealand, Wairarapa is fortunately placed, proving very popular for domestic tourism. As the Covid levels come down people are flooding back into the area. Businesses are rebuilding and events will return. The loss of income to our business during Covid brought into stark focus things that we may have previously taken for granted. There are no guarantees and client risk exposure became a priority in thinking while planning our recovery path. What percentage of our income is made up by who and how can we dilute the impact to our business of similar situations?

Konica Minolta Accurio C6100 Digital printer installed pre Covid “We are fortunate that over the past five years, diversification and investment in staff, equipment and technology has really broadened our operational front.” This has reduced some of that risk enabling us to adapt and change direction quickly. Out of adversity often comes opportunity if you are open and receptive to it. During the past three months we have been able to purchase new equipment that has been on our wish list for some time, taking advantage of heavily discounted buying opportunities offered by suppliers looking to reinvigorate their post-Covid cash flow. Despite some uncertainties as the new normal evolves, we are confident that our business is strongly positioned for recovery. Our desire is to continue pushing business into growth areas that were previously unavailable to us due to lack of space and technology. Our focus remains strongly linked to increasing efficiencies, offering a quality print result in a timely manner, at the most competitive that we can be for our existing and soon-to-be clients.

Create business and product brands which are great on the eye Blair Rooney designs brands for businesses and products. Keen to create branding which both clients and their customers love, he makes them instantly recognisable and memorable at a glance. “Clever branding is successful if we can go about our daily life not realising that we recognise things by their logo, colour, signage shape, without mentally absorbing words or mentally bringing it to attention,” explains Blair. “The more subtle, the more effective it is.” The Warehouse’s red ‘big red barn’ is probably one of the most familiar. That’s not Blair’s work but you get the idea. There’s lots of Blair’s ideas around Wairarapa and beyond. He has created the classy interior of Homegrown Meats at Kuripuni. Co-owner, Ali Kilmister is his mother, and he was thrilled to be tasked with creating the store’s brand. Think the large stencilled bull on the wall and the clean black and white theme. He has also managed the new user-friendly Homegrown Butchery website www.homegrownbutchery.online Then there’s the Kombucha made at Rangitumau, north of Masterton. Kate’s Kombucha labels feature her curly hair and glasses in cartoon form and are instantly recognisable on her drink bottles long before the actual flavour is identified. Although Blair cannot take credit for the logo, he has enjoyed helping Kate further develop her brand including her new website www.kateskombucha.co.nz Blair was born in Palmerston North and raised in Wellington where he met his

wife, Beth. They had spent two years in the same classroom at primary school and eventually met up again and married in 2018. Entrepreneurial from an early age, at 16, Blair created an apparel company, Rooney Clothing. He immersed himself in Wellington Fashion Week and learned heaps about business. Further jobs were in the print and media industry and had a couple of stints in Melbourne. Enable Digital was created in 2017. It was a leap of faith leaving a ‘comfortable’ creative job as a business development manager. He had seen a lot of creative work and was often frustrated at the lack of finesse. “I can do this,” was his mantra. Begging his parents to give him some freelance creative work, he built up a portfolio. He works from anywhere. A major plus in 2020. He either bases himself at home or in a café where he’ll be spied tapping away at his laptop in a corner. He enjoys the mobile nature of his job. Beth will often be with him too. “She’s a great communicator and keeps everything on track.” They often brainstorm and think through ideas together. He also enjoys the client involvement. He loves talking through their aspirations for their businesses and to come up with a range of ways they can promote their service or product. “There’s so many ways of doing this in today’s world, you need a collaborative approach – with imagination.”

Maple Build

Bay Irrigation

Crafting homes; shaping lives Whether it’s investing in new tradies, donating profits to help end poverty, or improving community well-being by building more sustainable housing, helping others is the cornerstone of Zac Prestidge’s business. Featherston local and Master Builder Zac is the founder and manager of Maple Build – a family-owned construction company, specialising in high-performance, energyefficient home builds. Zac, originally from rural Taranaki, studied design at university and worked as a youth mentor, before following in his Dad’s footsteps and training as a builder. He and wife Sadie, parents of three small children, started Maple Build while living in Wellington, and re-established the company after moving to Wairarapa in 2016. When starting their business, one of their goals was to contribute meaningfully to their community, and to affect positive change. For Zac, a huge part of this is providing quality housing stock: homes built to international standards to ensure maximum comfort, positive health outcomes and environmental resilience. “Helping people is important to us. And that looks like many things,” Zac says. “Of course, we’re helping people achieve their dream of their own home.” “But we’re also helping our team learn new skills and realise their potential. We’re providing a supportive environment where people can be their best selves.” “And we’re contributing to the overall health of the community, by providing healthier homes – that are reasonably priced.” Zac and the Maple Build team build homes using the Passive House concept – originating in Europe, and considered the global “gold standard” for highperformance housing. Passive Houses are built using rigorous design standards, which prioritise thermal comfort and, therefore, good health outcomes. A Maple Build home will incorporate high-performance elements based on the client’s specific needs and budget; for example, it will be built to regulate its temperature, have effectively managed internal ventilation, efficient window

We’re dealing with people, not just buildings - and people’s long-term well-being is important.” As well as doing charity work locally, Maple Build partners with Habitat for Humanity’s Home For A Home scheme. For every new build it completes, the business funds the construction of a new home for families in the Pacific or Nepal. Zac employs four builders, one of whom is recently qualified, and will be taking on new apprentices next year.

Intelligent irrigation solutions If you ask Dave Crawford what he does for a job, he will describe himself as a ‘handson salesperson’. Dave is in his element when he’s out on the farm working out intelligent irrigation solutions for landowners. A former share milker with decades of experience, these days, he’s Sales and Project Manager for Bay Irrigation in Wairarapa – a company which specialises in the agricultural irrigation field. Bay Irrigation has its head office in Hastings, where it began in the 1980s. It has formed relationships with farmers throughout New Zealand and irrigation machinery suppliers in Italy, France, and the United States. Through these international connections, it imports and distributes high-tech irrigation equipment with a focus on mobile irrigators, including Zimmatic Centre Pivots. Pivot irrigators have taken off in Wairarapa, according to Dave, who oversees their installation. The technology is now so advanced that each of the sprinklers, often numbering into the hundreds, can be controlled individually and wirelessly, ensuring water is only applied where it is required and only in the quantities needed.

in New Zealand by Manawatu men George Ricketts and Stuart Bradbury. The technology was purchased by the manufacturer of the Zimmatic pivots in the USA. “It’s great Kiwi ingenuity that has now gone around the world,” enthuses Dave. Dave loves his role working alongside the farmers to get the best outcome for their property. Business is booming in Wairarapa and Dave has employed Jason Brixton, a qualified diesel mechanic, who was raised in Wairarapa and is now enjoying using his qualification down on the farm. Bay Irrigation provides a total service, which men like Dave and Jason implement direct to the customers. It’s not all high-end, large scale irrigators – there’s a wide range of smaller irrigators, pumps, generator sets, rain guns, booms, and underground piping systems. When Men@Work visited, Dave, Jason and Pieter Thorenaar, the infrastructure manager on a South Wairarapa farm, were busy laying a 2km-long diversion pipeline. For all water management on the farm and large-scale situations, Dave and his team are the people to go to.

Paper Plus Masterton

Gibson Sheat Lawyers

Warwick Delmonte with ‘items of interest’ he and wife Sarah use in their eclectic displays throughout Paper Plus. The bear skin was obtained in the Canadian Rockies in the 1960s by Sarah’s parents.

Store in Masterton’s epi-centre focusing on beautiful books, gifts and great service Warwick Delmonte breathes a huge sigh of relief daily, that he and his family’s plans to go live in southern Spain, did not eventuate, due to no buyer for the business signing on the dotted line before Covid-19 struck. “We could have been sitting on that beach in Spain right now, thinking oh sh..t, what do we do now?” Three years after he and wife Sarah had purchased the Paper Plus store in Masterton, they decided in mid-2019 year that they would like a family adventure and live in the Andalucía region of Spain. Being close to other European countries appealed. Warwick says there was lots of interest in the store from potential purchasers, but no agreement had been made before Covid hit. As a result, the Delmonte family have recommitted to Masterton and the business. They are thrilled they did. The store is the hub of Masterton’s shopping centre and is experiencing an increase in spending from people forced to re-focus and look inward. Warwick believes people, like himself, who were going to be overseas, have money to spend locally. This is reflected in the things shoppers are buying. Board games are popular, so are jigsaws, picnic sets, journals and diaries, and the old-school photo albums. And books, the mainstay

of Paper Plus, are selling like hotcakes. “Families are cocooning, and they are reading books. It’s fabulous.” Warwick’s foray into retail came about with the move to Wairarapa where Sarah’s parents lived. Warwick is a great ‘ideas man’, reflected in the snazzy way Paper Plus is presented. He had climbed up the rungs of the advertising industry. “I got to the point where I needed to get out of advertising before my head exploded,” laughs Warwick. “Every day you have to think of a new idea and eventually the pressure just makes it less fun.” There’s lots of fun in the Masterton Paper Plus store, however. Warwick bows to his highly-experienced and long-serving staff who he says “run the store”. The display ideas with comfy couches and table lamps and creative new stock, like the old-school children’s toys made from wood and tin (plastic is frowned upon) all come from a private store in Warwick and Sarah’s shed. “We love creating magic touches, Sarah and I are very much collectors, verging on the cusp of being hoarders.” Call into Paper Plus and see what they dreamed up this week.

WAIRARAPA AERIAL IMAGING LTD RENÉ CLOUGH Drone Pilot

TAKING IN THE BIRD’S EYE VIEW Armed with some of the best industry specific camera equipment and cuttingedge drone technology, René Clough and Chris Moore are taking photography to new heights – in every sense. “Techie guys” René and Chris founded their company, Wairarapa Aerial Imaging Ltd, in 2015 – specialising in photography, mapping and land surveying, using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, and intricate GIS modelling software. Wairarapa Aerial Imaging Ltd arose from René and Chris both wanting to explore and expand the use of drone technology in the Wairarapa which was just starting to become a hot topic in New Zealand. René and Chris started out doing “about 95 percent real estate photography”, and evolved to earn the title of “Wairarapa’s drone specialists”. To date, they have a vast portfolio of work, including quarry volumetrics, forest, landscape and cemetery mapping, 3D modelling, specialist aerial geographic work for councils, videoing world record events, and short filmmaking, and René still manages to find time to assist his partner Robyne at Chester Road Photography with high end Real Estate and business promotional jobs. “We get to learn and become knowledgeable in every industry we work for,” René says. René even has a profile on IMDB.com – having done the aerial footage for the awardwinning short movie Tears of Valhalla, shot at Castlepoint. “Using drones, we can offer our clients and organisations a ton of data and providing a whole new perspective of the world around them – from a bird’s eye view,” René says. “There’s enormous variety in our work.” “We enjoy the variation in being able to get out and about in nature, take in the amazing and beautiful scenery and get to work with some incredible people, technology and rapidly advancing innovations.”

We’re your bubble on wheels Get out and about, safely and hygienically with Driving Miss Daisy Wairarapa

These days, René says the bulk of Wairarapa Aerial Imaging Ltd’s (WAIL) work is made up of mapping for commercial, industrial, environmental and agricultural projects. Its drones are equipped with very sophisticated technology and coupled with advanced mapping software, can convert photographs into topographical data capturing the geographic forms and features of the land allowing for exact precision of measurements throughout the entire site surveyed.

We can drive and accompany you to: • A trip to the seaside or park • Medical and other appointments • Shopping/Hairdresser • Visiting family and friends • Deliveries – e.g. take home meals • Any outing of your choice

“He meets with employers and clients to review their job requirements, and help the employer make plans for their safe return to work.” “Lockdown threw lots of people into working from home with makeshift set ups. Exit Tattoo Removal

Blasting away the past For many people, tattoos hold great significance, lasting representations of love, family, and spirituality, or expressions of identity and creativity. For others, their ink is a constant reminder of difficult times and youthful missteps – or a trigger of traumatic memories.

He says it can take some time for tattoos to fade completely. “It depends on the client’s immune system, the compounds in different inks, how far the tattoo is from the lymphatic vessels – like on the fingers and feet.”

If you’re in the latter camp – that’s where Jarrod Brown comes in. Father-of-three Jarrod is the man behind Exit Laser Tattoo Removal, operating out of ISME Permanent Cosmetics, on Perry Street in Masterton. A qualified laser operator, he specialises in erasing tattoos, both cosmetic and body art, via laser therapy - using a combination of heat and speed to break down ink particles under the skin. The particles are then ejected from the body by the lymphatic system, allowing the tattoo to fade and, eventually, disappear.

I didn’t KNOW tattoo removal would be something I’d enjoy – but it’s hugely rewarding.”

Jarrod started Exit Laser Tattoo Removal in 2019, after wife Nicole – ISME owner and a reputable cosmetic tattooist - met clients who were less than satisfied with the brow tattoos they had received elsewhere. “She wasn’t able to help, as we didn’t have the machine to remove them.”

“It’s important clients understand it can be a lengthy process.”

“So we saw a gap in the market, and moved on in,” he says.

Jarrod says he has treated a variety of clients – from those embarrassed by poorlyrendered home jobs, to people starting over after a brush with the law.

“I didn’t know tattoo removal would be something I’d enjoy – but it’s hugely rewarding.” “I see a lot of people with tattoos associated with bad memories. The tattoos are like an anchor – keeping them weighed down and tethered to their past.“ “Once they finish their treatment, they’re quite emotional – they have a clean slate and move forward with their lives.” Laser therapy marks a new career direction for Jarrod. He is a bricklayer by trade and works part-time doing pest control. Before setting up his new businesses, he trained in laser tattoo removal at the New Zealand Laser Training Institute and invested in a Picosecond Laser machine.

Jarrod Brown.

“I’ll get people who got a tattoo with their best friend – and they and that friend have fallen out.” “Then I’ll get in people from rough backgrounds, who may have got a particular tattoo that wasn’t their choice.” “I’ll get guys who have come from gangs, who are wanting a new start. I do WINZ quotes for laser removal – for example, for people wanting to remove tattoos from their faces and hands, so they can have a better chance at getting a job.” “It’s awesome – really satisfying work.”

The machine uses short, powerful, ultra-fast pulses of energy (one picosecond is equal to one trillionth of a second) to blast tattoo ink into minuscule fragments. The lymphatic system then responds to the ink fragments – made up of compounds from heavy metals, like copper and lead – and sends white blood cells to engulf the particles and expel them from the body. During treatment, Jarrod also uses a cooling air machine, which blows cold air - up to – 20 degrees - on to the client’s skin, to numb the treated area.

Jarrod eventually hopes to train others in laser therapy and be involved with setting compliance and safety standards for laser technicians. If you have a tattoo that you are wanting removed contact Jarrod for a free online consultation and quote via www. ismecosmetics.co.nz/exit-tattoo-removal. Haglund Consulting

Minty Contracting

Daniel Childs (left) and Nathan Haglund.

Strength, leadership and no-nonsense accounting Haglund Consulting may be the new accounting firm on the block - but the faces are all familiar. Its small yet proficient team, led by seasoned Chartered Accountant Nathan Haglund, has been working together for many years in Wairarapa, looking after businesses of all sizes. Nathan, who founded the Queen Street business this year, has vast experience in the banking industry and as a Partner at another Masterton firm - giving him the necessary credentials to break away and do things his way.

Daniel says Haglund Consulting prides itself on its no-nonsense service – delivering messages to clients in simple, straight-forward terms. “Accounting can be technical – and we don’t want our clients to feel intimidated or bogged down by jargon.” “It’s much less stressful for clients when they understand what we’re saying!” Dan studied accounting at Victoria University, and has worked at other accounting firms and for himself as a bookkeeper.

“I’ve been wanting to start my own business for a while – to have that independence, and able to drive my own destiny,” he says.

He eventually returned home to Masterton, hoping to apply his knowledge to help the next wave of businesses in Wairarapa.

“I come from a family of self-employed people – Dad was a pharmacist, and Mum owned a clothing shop. So, it’s definitely in the blood.”

“Working here, you really get to know your clients and form a relationship with them. You see them in the supermarket, or around town – that’s something you don’t get in the Capital.”

The firm’s logo is a bull head – symbolising strength, leadership, and persistence; something that Nathan strives to project. The firm itself - consisting of Nathan, Abby Ewen CA, Daniel Childs, Angeline Colquhoun and office manager Eleina Heggie - has clients all over the country, and offers a range of services: tax returns, bookkeeping, compliance advice, tax and business planning, and mentorship for new start-ups.

Nathan and his team are dedicated to remaining on the cutting edge of professional technology. Their clients enjoy cloud-based accounting and the new ideas and concepts that come with business mentorship in 2020. “We mould to fit our clients’ needs – whether that is regular account management or annual check-ins,” Nathan says.

Jake Minty.

Do it once, get it right Jake Minty’s business philosophy is simple: “show up when you say you will, do the job you promised to do, and don’t leave until you’re finished”. Jake is, as he proudly calls himself on his website, “your trusty local bloke” behind Minty Contracting: a small Mastertonbased enterprise specialising in home maintenance, renovations, and steel and timber work. The multi-talented handyman, with support from wife Casey behind the scenes, set up his business under the name Made2Maintain in October last year: offering a range of services, including shed and deck building, earthworks, house washing and digger works. He is continuing his work under the Minty Contracting brand, with a particular focus on building residential fences and gates in a range of materials, such as timber, steel, iron and colorsteel. So far, Jake has received plenty of glowing reviews for his efficiency, forthright manner, and quality craftsmanship.

“He prides himself on doing it once and getting it right the first time.” Jake grew up in Otaki, where he learned his vast range of competencies from his father, a builder and engineer, and two engineer uncles. He and Casey lived in Australia for 15 years – where he worked in the construction and engineering sectors as a foreman, and she owned and managed a successful nanny agency. On re-settling in Masterton in 2018, Jake decided it was time to “give selfemployment a go”. These days, the couple are kept busy with running several of their own businesses and raising their three children. One of whom, three-year-old Jonah, has clearly inherited his Dad’s handyman prowess. “He’s not interested in plastic toys – he’d rather hang out with his Dad and use the ‘big tools’”, Casey says.

“Jake is straight up – he means what he says,” Casey says.

“He knows what all the tools can do, and can hammer a nail in straight. And he has his own work boots, just like Daddy’s.”

“He’s honest and reliable, and very precise and detailed in his work. He’s a perfectionist.”

He’s pleased to report one of those dreams has come to fruition – as he is now the owner of a digital marketing business, helping his fellow entrepreneurs tell their story through snappy, engaging and accessible written content. Greytown man Tom founded Tom Pitchforth Consulting in 2018, aiming to help “small Kiwi businesses” and new start-ups connect with their audience in the brave new online world. Experienced in copywriting, content creation and strategic marketing, he offers a range of services to help businesses promote themselves digitally: including website building, writing web and advertising copy, blogging, social media engagement, search engine optimisation (SEO), and targeted advertising across a range of platforms such as Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

2020 a year to make Dr Akash Kota smile Despite Covid-19, this year has turned out to be a very positive one for Masterton Dental and its owner Dr Akash Kota. 2020 has seen the Perry Street practice move in a new direction as more and more patients ask Dr Akash to improve their smile. “I never thought I would be interested in cosmetics but this year my patients started asking if I could improve their smile. I love it now, but didn’t expect it.” Dr Akash has spent the past year training at implantology laboratories and clinical centres around the world, and has purchased world class technology in the field of cosmetic dentistry to make the process as accurate, painless and convenient as possible.

Dental implants are the latest innovation to replace a missing tooth or number of teeth, offering natural looking teeth in place of plastic or metal dentures.

“You come up with inventive ways to help your client express themselves, and you can see the results in real time.”

A smile makeover comprises a variety of procedures which are tailored to each individual patient, to give them a beautiful smile that is unique to them.

“You see how many people have clicked and engaged – the data doesn’t lie. There’s an honesty and transparency about it.”

“I customise the smile makeover to different budgets with a variety of treatments including composite restorations, orthodontics, crowns, veneers, whitening, or any combination of these.”

Tom says he has enjoyed creative writing from a young age – and was particularly fascinated by advertising copy.

The people of Wairarapa have played a big part in the success of the practice, Dr Akash feels.

This has led to the practice attracting talented young dentists from around New Zealand who are interested in furthering their education and adopting the new technology.

He graduated from Otago University dental school in 2015 and joined Masterton Dental the following year, taking full ownership of the practice in 2019.

The latest is Dr Bashar Al Kadhi who has been practising in his home town of Hamilton for the past five years, and is about to join the practice.

“The reason I was happy to buy the clinic was because from day one I always found Wairarapa people a joy to work with. All my dentists feel the same way. The technology and the clinics patients have been a big part in attracting them here.”

Dental implants and “smile makeovers” are both being requested by patients.

Digital marketing, says Tom, is a perfect blend of three of his favourite things: the written word, creativity and technology – with a “no BS” measurability of success.

“Radio voiceovers, newspaper ads, billboards – I wondered what made [the writer] choose those words? I had a feeling I would do that for a job one day.” He started his career as a technical writer in the public service – but, feeling stifled, he left and started working for a small start-up, Uprise Digital, as a junior copywriter. Uprise grew and expanded, and Tom became head of Content Marketing and SEO, working for some big-ticket clients. Eventually, he missed the satisfaction and “humanity” of working with small businesses. “They put complete trust in you, which is a huge motivator. You are close to the

action, you form real relationships, and you get to celebrate their gains alongside them.” “I didn’t want the little guy to miss out. So, I created Tom Pitchforth Consulting.” Having settled in Greytown in 2017, Tom sees Wairarapa as the perfect base from which to help small businesses become competitive on the national stage. “There is so much talent and promise here. Wairarapa is very much an upcoming centre for commerce.” “As Wellington gets more expensive and pressed for space, I think more businesses will base themselves over the hill.” When not at work, he enjoys playing the guitar and song-writing, and spending time with his family: partner Sara, threeyear-old son and baby daughter.
