LAWSON AVERY LTD – CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS BRETT WOOFFINDIN Brett bought into Lawson Avery in April last year after joining the firm at the start of 2015. Brett deliberately chose the Wairarapa not only for its family friendly lifestyle, but also because of the business growth opportunities. He proactively wrote to all the local accountants, getting a very positive response, and chose Lawson Avery due its great clients, wonderful staff and long and successful history. The passion Brett has for the positive impact technology is having on the accounting world is evident as he speaks about how it frees accountants up to deliver more value and services to their clients. It also empowers clients to more fully understand their own financial information and make those crucial decisions based on timely information. “It used to be that accountants would report retrospectively with their clients once a year. Thanks to the latest technology, we regularly interact with our clients and keep up to date with exactly where their business is heading”, says Brett. “The technology takes care of the more mundane accounting tasks for our clients and ourselves – enabling us to focus on the more strategic aspects of business”. Brett is well known and respected for his expertise in cloud-based accounting software packages – particularly Xero and Figured. Xero is a well-known accounting software package that (among other things) uploads bank account feeds overnight and transfers the transactions intuitively and automatically into useful accounting information. Figured is an agricultural sector ‘add on’ that performs farm management tasks such as analysing the impact of market changes and managing stock numbers. Figured works directly with Xero and the combination makes for a great business and accounting tool. “Our clients love these tools,” says Brett. “It ensures a ‘no surprises’ approach and makes tasks like GST, budgeting & forecasting, payroll, asset management and up to date reporting a breeze for both us and our clients”.

Originally from a farming background in South Canterbury, Brett particularly enjoys working with his rural clients who account for around 50% of their firm’s business (with a further 20% of businesses being in agricultural support). Brett loves his role, which he sees as supporting his clients in their businesses and helping them grow and achieve their business goals, “I love helping our clients solve challenges. There’s always something different every day and my role is always changing and evolving”. He particularly enjoys the challenge and variety that a complex area of his work – succession planning – involves. “The inter-generational nature of succession planning can often mean a lot of emotion is involved as generations retire and the next generation begins to lead”, says Brett. Brett has the perfect personality for dealing with what can potentially be an emotional time for everyone involved, ensuring everyone is comfortable with the decisions and the plan is implemented as smoothly as possible. Living in Masterton with his three-year old twin boys, Brett thoroughly enjoys living and working in the Wairarapa, describing the people as “friendly, helpful and supportive”.

KEEPING PAIN & KERSHAW IN THE FAMILY FOR A FOURTH GENERATION CONOR KERSHAW Pain & Kershaw Martinborough started another era in its 144 year-old history when Conor Kershaw purchased the Mitre 10 business from his parents David and Ineke eight years ago.

CUSTOM - MADE POOLS TO SUIT YOU! JOSH SOUDEN, COLIN HEATON AND DANIEL WILSON - POOL CONSTRUCTION LTD AND OUTDOOR CENTRE, CARTERTON

In more recent times Conor and his wife Philippa have also taken on the Four Square Supermarket and the General Store as his parents have recently retired from the business. Conor first started working for the family business as an eight year-old, when he got his first job “packing veges into kilo bags after school.” After leaving Nelson College, Conor studied business management at Otago Polytechnic before returning to help project manage the building of the new Mitre 10 store. He then headed off on a working holiday overseas for three years. Conor splits his time three ways between Mitre 10, Four Square and the family property management. There is a new supermarket building in the early stages of planning at the moment. This will encompass earthquake strengthening the existing building and some new building on the site. Conor hopes that an improved building will better meet growing demands of Martinborough as well as setting up for the next generation of grocer’s coming through. Philippa runs the P&K General Store which has been given a recent full refit to modernize the business. While it might seem a bit old-fashioned, Conor believes the General Store provides an important service for the town by stocking items that both locals and visitors would otherwise have to travel out of town for. It also has great men’s and women’s clothing brands on offer.

Colin Heaton, Daniel Wilson and Josh Souden - Pool Construction Ltd and Outdoor Centre, Carterton.

Pool Construction Ltd builds pools to meet the client’s specific requirements and expectations. Every pool built is unique and has no likeness to mass produced ‘cookie cutter’ pools.

He has put down his roots in Martinborough with his wife and three daughters, three businesses and a 70-odd strong team. Life is busy! “It’s a lifestyle I really enjoy. No two days are the same. The team I work with and the customers we serve are what makes it”.

While his siblings have pursued careers in other parts of the world, Conor has no regrets about the direction his life has taken.

Staff at Pool Construction Ltd value their clients, listen to them, get to know them and treat them with the respect that can be expected from a local, family run business. Josh, Colin and Dan can build swimming pools Any shape - Any size – Anywhere! The secret behind this flexibility is the method of construction that they use. Pool Construction Ltd belongs to the Mayfair Group and builds pools using the Mayfair design process. Pools are excavated to the desired shape and size, then lined with an insulating board. Steps and other features are created, before fibreglass and gelcoat are applied. The result is a durable, modern finish on a pool built specifically to the client’s specifications. Hence the motto “We build pools to suit you.” Josh is the Project Manager. He has over 13 years’ experience in the industry and brings the skills and expertise which

are key to the fibreglassing process. He oversees the pool build from start to finish, including liaising with the client, and the actual construction of the pool. He is ably supported in this by his assistant Dan, who also brings a wide range of skills to the job. Service Technician Colin installs the pipe work including pumps and filters and sets up chlorination, heating, cleaning and lighting systems as required. He also provides help and support to owners of new or existing pools, with regard to all aspects of pool maintenance including cleaning, chemical dosing, filters and covers. Pool Construction Ltd has been building pools for over 50 years, while its retail outlet, known as the Outdoor Centre and located on the corner of High Street and Wakelin Street, has been a landmark in Carterton’s business district for over 30 years. Present and future clients can be assured Pool Construction Ltd and the Outdoor Centre staff will be around for many years to come, meeting the needs of pool owners and users in our community.

ENRICHING THE SPIRIT OF HIS STUDENTS

CREATING A LITERARY THEATRE OF SURPRISES AND DELIGHTS

DALE WATERHOUSE - CHAPLAIN, RATHKEALE COLLEGE Dale Waterhouse might not be your typical school chaplain. Dale grew up in Elkhart, Indiana - population 52,000 and 180 kilometres from Chicago. He attended Bethel College, Indiana where he trained as a teacher, specialising in maths. A desire for adventure saw Dale and wife Sarah come to New Zealand nine years ago with their young family. After three terms at Aorere College in Auckland, the couple came down to the Wairarapa where Dale taught at Wairarapa College for six years. “I really enjoyed my time there - it was a really positive experience.” The 32 year-old came to Rathkeale College at the beginning of 2016. “I had become friends with Ben Arcus who was the chaplain at Rathkeale and when Ben decided to move to Wellington, he suggested I apply for the role.” Dale was raised in an evangelical Christian family home but over time had been attracted to the Anglican faith. “I really enjoy the contemplative aspect of the faith and the value it places on social responsibility.” Dale leads the school chapel weekly and teaches religious studies at the college. “The boys get the opportunity to learn about Christianity, but we also teach them from a philosophical point of view. We discuss ideas such as the nature of evil and good, and how we find purpose in our lives.” “Chapel is a time we set aside every week for preaching, teaching, and slowing down to reflect on ideas that we wouldn’t make time for in our busy day to day lives. Dale also works in a Counselling Support role and offers mentoring for the boys. “I’m here to talk to the boys in an informal environment on any issues, whether academic, anxiety and stress related, social situations, and encouraging them to continue in their spiritual development. “I am also here to help parents who know their son is going through something but

don’t know how to seek help. “It can keep me pretty busy. One of the beautiful things of job is that I can be as busy as I want to be. There is no shortage of boys who I can help and build good relationships with.” One of his duties closest to Dale’s heart is Rathkeale’s School Service Programme which challenges boys to find opportunities to serve the community. “We’ve been building strong relationships with churches, Rotary and businesses and they have been finding opportunities where we can help, such as doing gardening for families, splitting firewood for elderly people, planting trees with the Masterton District Council and being involved with the Queen Elizabeth Park beautification project.” This voluntary programme has had an outstanding response from the boys and the community, Dale says. This year over 150 boys have volunteered, and over 800 hours of work have been done. “The boys discover they can shape their world to be a better place. They are not relying on others - they can step in and do the right thing.” Dale is a great believer in the value of practical action. “It’s a good place to start to do things that enrich your spirit. Your spiritual self comes out by helping others. You are learning to love humanity and love each other by action. “The boys learn to recognise the value of putting their energy into things that have lasting value. “The programme also puts them in touch with your community. Meeting different people destroys stereotypes you might have about them. You are tearing down walls, rather than putting them up.”

WARWICK DELMONTE - PAPER PLUS Former Paper Plus owner Russell Carthew could probably not have found a more suitable candidate to take over the Masterton bookstore when he retired earlier this year. Russell and new owner Warwick Delmonte have plenty in common, starting with the fact that both of them had fathers who owned a bookshop. In Warwick’s case it was a book and stationary store in Papakura, Auckland, which allowed Warwick to indulge in Beano and Prince Valiant comics to his heart’s content. However, his own destiny took Warwick into the world of advertising where he was a highly successful copy writer for print and television with clients like banks and airlines.

about the challenges posed to brick and mortar bookstores by online book retailers. He believes the difference is in the experience Paper Plus offers. “Everything you can find in shops you can find online. What people come here for is a wonderful experience, personalised and humanised.

Warwick started his own ad agency in 2006 with business partners but sold his share nine years later.

“They are not just buying a book - they are also sharing company and enjoying being in a pleasant environment.

“Thirty four years of stress - having to come up with a new idea every day - can take its toll.”

“It’s a bit like theatre. You are creating an atmosphere with surprises and delights.”

A self-confessed Auckland refugee - “Fifty years was enough” - Warwick moved down to the Wairarapa with wife Sarah in 2015. “I was house husband for our two young children, Poppy who is now eight and George who is five. I was not looking to get into retail but the opportunity to buy Paper Plus arose and I was attracted to it because I have loved being surrounded by words all my life. “And as a newcomer to the area I was missing meeting people. Running a bookstore is a wonderful way to be incorporated into the community which was something I missed. I’ve always felt books attract the most interesting people in the world.” Warwick is certainly under no illusions

And even humour with last month’s “Crime Month” featuring a real life autopsy table piled with books. “The long game,” says Warwick, “is to make it the best book store in New Zealand.” But Warwick points out Paper Plus isn’t just a book store, with its Office Supplies department a significant part of the business, plus Lotto, Kiwi Bank and Post Shop. Warwick plans to add more “top shelf” books to the already expansive range with small numbers of collectable, quality and special interest books. His own taste is in crime thrillers like Michael Connelly and Nelson DeMille. “Books offer sanity, a wonderful way to escape. It is time away in a very busy world.”

CARTERTON’S PUNCHY LITTLE COUNCIL As councils go, Carterton is proving to pack a punch in delivering great services to their community. As a small town, the council reflects this through small teams. Men play a big role both delivering our services and in leadership positions. While they might not say it out loud, they also enjoy the balance provided by a strong female influence. Together, this brings about the culture of working together as a team to provide exceptional service. The management style is very much encouraging staff to make decisions says Planning and Regulatory Manager, Dave Gittings. “We encourage independent decision making and trust each team’s judgement. This enables management to facilitate our people to do what they do best.” The relationship between council and community is a key part of what makes Carterton successful. “We strive to do the best we can for the people of Carterton, while balancing this with the regulations we need to adhere to. It can be a challenge, but our teams do exceptionally well.” Speaking of challenges, Dave says each team is always trying to do better.

“We meet, we discuss, we plan. We always ask, how can we do better? Sometimes we make mistakes, but it’s our desire to do better and learn that keeps this council moving forward.” Newly appointed Parks and Reserves Manager Clinton Thompson agrees with the philosophy behind Carterton’s punchy little council. “Ultimately, we are community focused. The boys and I work alongside local community groups to develop our district so that we can provide a fantastic place for our people to live and play.” Pride in their work, and pride in their town is the driving force behind the Parks and Reserves team. “Our town is beautiful, we have so much satisfaction in creating enjoyable, environmentally friendly spaces. We are continually thinking about how we can do things with the least amount of impact to our environment.” Three Waters Manager, Selwyn Osborne explains that sustainable principles and endeavoring to improve processes and procedure, making daily operations and systems more functional and efficient, is a major part of the thinking of the Operations team.

“I have a great team and we take a very stringent approach to delivering safe and reliable water services. Our systems are proving successful and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt and improve to meet regulations.” Carterton’s wastewater upgrade is an example of how council is thinking to the future. “Our long term vision to improve fresh water quality by removing treated urban wastewater from the Mangatārere Stream is the right thing to do, and an exciting project to be a part of. The development of the wastewater treatment plant and vision to irrigate the land is a sustainable and a positive step towards the future of Carterton’s environment.” Vision was also the driver behind the Carterton’s other successful project, the Carterton Events Centre. The Carterton community is well aware of the value of the state of the art Events Centre, and now it seems the rest of the region has caught on to Wairarapa’s best kept secret. Venue Coordinator David Sims explains that the venue has never been so busy. “Since the Events Centre opened 6 years ago we have had a steady client base from local community and corporate groups. However in the last 12-18 months we have

seen a massive increase in bookings.” A large part of the bookings come from commercial stage shows which are travelling throughout New Zealand. “For the promoters we are providing a midweek stop over on route to larger destinations. It’s a great opportunity for them to get their shows into the regions. “ Although being so busy has created challenges trying to accommodate everyone, ultimately busy equals success. “It’s a great situation to be in; the vision to have a state of the art facility in Carterton is paying off.” It is clear that throughout Carterton District Council that there is an unwavering strive towards to excellence; not only driven by vision, but through great management, an acknowledgement of learning from mistakes, and the desire to continually improve. A good team bond can go a long way explains Marty Sebire, Corporate Services Manager. “We support each other really well. This makes for a great team.” “And it also helps that we all get along!” Marty adds. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously. We have a great balance between professionalism and the ability to sit back and have a laugh.”

MEET THE TEAM RYAN MONASTRA

(Director/ Masters Physiotherapist Carterton) I’ve worked for 15+ years as a physiotherapist helping people overcome setbacks that cause them to limp, wince or clutch a painful bit! But over that time I’ve discovered there are a bunch of common threads that tie us all together - We all need a bit of certainty to know we’re on the right track with our health efforts, we all need the right advice and support to make the changes necessary for growth and improvement and we all need a clear understanding of what to do in case the plan doesn’t quite come off. So my work centers around ensuring my clients have a clear understanding of the way forward and what I can do to assist in that process. I also love trying to solve the problems of the future hence trying to direct our wee company to meet the health needs of this community throughout the next few decades!

MARTIN KIDD

(Masters Physiotherapist - Carterton) I have been a physiotherapist for over 300 premier rugby and soccer games, working successfully with return to sport timelines. BRYAN STOTT - BRYAN’S FURNITURE Bryan Stott credits a well-meaning employer with giving him the break that led to where he is today. Bryan grew up in Christchurch and by the end of school still didn’t know what he wanted to do. “All I knew was that I was interested in sport. I was given a break early on in life to work in a furniture shop in Christchurch. Eventually I made my way up to become the sales manager.”

NICHOLAS HOHEPA

Today Bryan and wife Rachael own Wairarapa’s biggest specialist furniture retail store in Masterton.

I love the challenge of working with clients with a full range of presentations and a variety of goals, whether this is returning to work, sport or just being able to function comfortably day to day. I’m particularly interested in working with youth, as this stage in life is still one of development, and getting things right here can have a significant and positive effect on function through later stages in life.

The couple opened Bryan’s Furniture 15 years ago, after moving to the Wairarapa where Rachael had grown up.

(Physiotherapist - Masterton)

SIMON PUMFREY

(Masters Chiropractor - Carterton & Masterton) I am a Chiropractor with over 15 years’ experience in helping individuals address lifestyle factors that ultimately will improve their health and wellbeing. I have a keen interest and am highly knowledgeable in the way the human body stabilizes and functions for work and sports performance and I take a very holistic approach to all individuals.

DUNCAN CAMERON

Established in Chapel Street, Bryan’s Furniture has been expanding ever since and two years ago moved to its present location at 132 Lincoln Road, giving it 24,000 square feet for display, store rooms and front door car parking. This allowed the business to display an even bigger selection of product from its brand partners - Beds-R-Us, Sleepyhead, La-z-boy Gallery and Devon Lifestyle. “A year ago we were also lucky enough to become the stockist of Scandinavianinfluenced New Zealand furniture supplier Danske Møbler and Stressless Furniture.” Despite the size of the store, Bryan’s Furniture has never lost its small town atmosphere and service. This is in large part due to staff who work there, says Bryan who describes himself as “just the figurehead.”

“The true assets of the business are three great women - Glenda and Jane who have been with us for 15 years, and Angie for over nine years. They take great pride in listening to our customers and matching them up with the best solution for them. They know the products to the ninth degree but still enjoy being tested with those challenging questions.” “We also keep as much control as possible of the supply chain from the order right through to the delivery, for quality pieceof-mind shopping.” Bryan’s Furniture is a member of New Zealand’s largest independent buying group, and Bryan personally chooses products at international trade shows. “One of the advantages of being a locally owned business is that we can offer more selection than big chains, while being part of the different groups gives us excellent prices to pass on to our customers and being independent allows us to select products suited to the Wairarapa.” The other feature that sets Bryan’s Furniture apart is Rachael’s hair salon, Belle La Dame which is located within the store. Rachael has a loyal following of clients who find the easy parking and unique salon environment second to none. Bryan and Rachael are also pleased to welcome to the complex The Shape Shop Fitness and Nutrition run by Lynda and Stephen Oldfield who focus on women’s fitness.

I have over 10-years of experience working in vocational rehabilitation. This role sees me working with injured clients and their healthcare team, their employers, and their case managers - to coordinate and support their successful return to work. FAGAN MOTORS’ NEXT GENERATION - TRUE BELIEVERS IN EXEMPLARY CUSTOMER SERVICE

KEITH ALLEN - DEALER PRINCIPAL

TERENCE O’HARA - SALES MANAGER

DEAN HERRICK - SERVICE MANAGER

DAVE MILLER - PARTS MANAGER AND MOTORCYCLE SALES

In a way, Keith carries the weight of nearly nine decades of tradition on his shoulders.

“It always falls back to the same principle of customer service - treat someone as you would like to be treated yourself.”

Joining Fagan Motors has been a step down for Dean - but only physically.

Dave has always had a passion for cars and motorbikes - “right from when I was a little kid. My first motorbike was a Suzuki 125 when I was 11, and my first car was a Fiat 125 Sport.”

Fagan Motors has been part of Masterton since 1931 and Keith points out “history is important for us.” “I’m very passionate about the place. All the people here care about it. That is what sets us apart here. We love our brands and want to leave it even better than when we found it.” Keith joined the Dixon Street dealership in 1983. Originally in the Parts Department, he went on to become Parts Manager, Parts & Services Manager and Sales Manager before becoming dealer principal just over two years ago. He’s a great believer in the Fagans franchises - Ford, Mazda, Suzuki and Kawasaki - which he says have been doing very well lately. “We are at the point now where we need to expand and take on more people.” Eighty seven years on, the foundation of Fagan Motors’ success remains the same, says Keith.

Terence joined Fagan Motors three years ago as Sales Manager after Keith Allen became Dealer Principal at the Dixon Street business. Terence grew up in Masterton, attending Chanel College, and has lived in the Wairarapa most of his life. He is no stranger to vehicle buyers in the Wairarapa, having spent over a quarter of a century in vehicle sales. This experience and Terence’s easy going nature have made him the perfect match for Fagans’ non-intimidating sales experience. “It’s been a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. I really enjoy working with people and having fun with them. Things never get too serious. “We’ve got a really good team of guys here, all striving for the same goal of great service and an enjoyable experience. “We know we don’t have the most flashest building in town but it is the people that make us what we are - not the buildings.” Terence notes that many of his customers have been with the business for decades. “Fagans enjoys amazing loyalty from their clients. We have been here since 1931 and there is a real loyalty to the brands.”

For the previous six years Dean was a pilot for Life Flight’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter. It was a job he loved but with a good part of his week spent in Wellington, Dean felt he was missing out on an important time to be with his wife and young family at their Wairarapa home. With Fagan Motors as the Vehicle sponsor for Life Flight, a connection was made.

So it was only natural that Dave would choose Fagan Motors for his work experience while still at school.

But joining Fagan’s as Service Manager was not as random as it might at first seem.

Dave joined Fagan’s full-time straight after finishing college in December 1989, first in the Parts Department for a few months, and then as an apprentice technician.

Dean was living in Auckland and completed his technician’s apprenticeship there before working in various workshops as a technician and workshop manager. “But I wanted to follow my passion of flying helicopters which I have done for the last 20 years.” As one would expect of a Life Flight helicopter pilot, Dean’s professionalism is obvious but comes with an easy going manner, both undoubted assets in his new role which sees him interacting with both staff and customers, and overseeing both car and motorcycle service and repairs. “We are constantly looking to provide a high level of service and also a fast service as our customers usually need their car on the road now.

“After that I worked here every school holidays. When there wasn’t enough other work we would mow the lawns.”

A year after completing his apprenticeship, Dave temporarily stepped in to the Parts Department after a staff member left. “I really liked it and asked if I could stay.” Dave took on a further role when Fagan’s took on the Wairarapa franchise for Kawasaki and Suzuki six years ago. “I said I wouldn’t mind being involved with those as well.” Since then Fagans has expanded into importing late model, low mileage, good condition Harley Davidsons as well, and sells other second-hand motorcycle models as well. Fagans is able to source parts for all makes and models of cars and motorcycles, Dave points out.

“Having a team of such experienced technicians, some of whom have been with Fagan’s for many years, is a real bonus.”

MITSUBISHI SMASHES IT OUT OF THE PARK BRENT COOPER - WAIRARAPA MITSUBISHI Following on from winning the Mitsubishi New Zealand Excellence In Year-On-Year Sales Award for 2015/2016, Wairarapa Mitsubishi has continued to excel in the 2016-2017 year. “We hit the two year milestone last month and achieved a lot of personal targets,” says Brent Cooper who purchased the business with wife Tracey in August 2015. Underpinning the growth of the business has been the introduction of exciting new models as well as updates of existing ones, says Brent. He cites the Pajero Sport - a completely new four wheel drive SUV - as the perfect example. “We’ve had brilliant sales of the Pajero which was a completely new ground up model in 2016. It’s the number one ute based SUV sold in New Zealand last year.

The male members of the Cooper family from left Ben, Brent, Caleb and James.

“It has heavy towing and better off road abilities, plus a little bit of everything. And the best warranty in the market of 10 years.”

“Dad enjoyed a few months of retirement and then started to come in to help us out, and has never left.”

The all-new Triton ute has also been selling well since coming on to the market in 2015, says Brent.

Apprentice technician Dion Boyles is a new addition to the workshop, coming from Eketahuna where he previously worked with Brent.

There have been some new additions to the team at Wairarapa Mitsubishi as well, to meet the increased customer demand. Brent’s dad Clive Cooper has now joined Trevor Jones in grooming and vehicle reconditioning.

The workshop team is led by service manager Grant Tatham. Workshop technician Neville McKenzie has been on the premises since way back in the 1960s when it was Sharples Motors. The other

technicians are Kevin Bannister and Roger Lane. Parts manager Donald Leighton is another long serving member of the staff, while Cathryn Jones and Debbie Murray-Aynsley serve in administration.

Tracey continues to manage the couple’s other business, Masterton Seed & Pet Shop in Dixon Street and the couple are raising three young boys.

Brent, Steve Thompson and Rodney Craig continue to comprise the sales team.

The success of Wairarapa Mitsubishi over the past year wouldn’t have been possible without the strong relationships built up over the past two years with the Masterton community, Brent says.

“It’s a really unique sales environment. Everyone is easy to get along with and our main goal is the customer.”

“I would also like to say ‘thank you’ to all our customers, and we are looking forward to seeing what our third year brings.”

FINDING A ROCK IN GOD

ANDY ELDRED - ST MARK’S ANGLICAN CHURCH The journey for Reverend Andy Eldred from a southern Baptist upbringing in North Carolina to vicar of St Mark’s in Carterton has been an eventful one. Born in in Vermont in 1969, Andy had a momentary personal connection with the Christian faith when he attended a Baptist service as a 12 year-old. But heavy metal culture beckoned and by the time he was 22 Andy’s band Tykzyppr had a record deal and were preparing for a national tour. However a near miss with a truck when driving home after a practice was the catalyst for dramatic reevaluation of Andy’s inner life. “It was like the mask I had been wearing had been pulled off. I felt depressed, desperate and suicidal.” “Looking for direction I played Bible roulette and opened it up at John, Chapter 8 Verse 12. ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ It was a pretty solid answer, like the return in a cosmic tennis match.”

SHARING A YOUTHFUL PASSION FOR CHRIST

“What I noted about the Anglican church was its generosity of orthodoxy. We are all on our own journey and as Anglicans we recognise that incredible diversity - being true to your experience and being faithful in God in the way that works for you.”

REVEREND HARRY NEWTON - ST LUKE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH GREYTOWN

A little bit of his counter-culture background remains with Andy but this now expressed within a spiritual context.

At just 29, Harry Newton’s life has not been short of dramas. As the new Minister at St Luke’s, the pace may be slower but Harry certainly won’t be letting the grass grow under his feet.

“Our biggest fear is missing out on living the kind of life that is filled with direction, passion and purpose. To know that you don’t exist just for yourself - that is why the Anglican faith is counter-cultural. “If people are looking for a truly countercultural example, they won’t find a more radical revolutionary than Jesus. Jesus is a an agent of hope. Death doesn’t win - love wins. In the midst of sorrow and loss there is still hope - nothing is wasted.” Andy has spent the previous eight years as vicar of St Luke’s in Greytown and is looking forward to his new position at St Mark’s.

Music still played an important role in Andy’s life and ministry, leading worship playing in bands and teaching youth how to play and create their own bands. In1998 he joined Steiger International, an evangelistic ministry reaching out to those on the cultural margins of society, he served as the Director of Steiger Massachusetts until 2003. He can still be seen rocking local pubs and parties with his three piece band Good As Gold.

“Our aim is to grow a dynamic community of faith, that encourages, supports and strengthens each other on life’s journey.

Andy found his way to New Zealand and the Anglican faith.

“Or as we put it ... In Christ we are loved, we belong, and we are enough.”

“We are planning and looking for creative ways to engage with our local community, especially supporting young families. “As part of the Wellington Anglican Diocese, we embrace the three fold statement, “we are family, we are disciples, we love the last the lost and the least.

Harry began his ministry at the beginning of last month, coming with wife Aimee and their two children Josiah (3) and Ariana (1), from Christchurch where Harry was the Assistant Curate and Youth Minister at St Barnabas Anglican Church. Both Harry and Aimee’s parents served overseas as missionaries with The New Zealand Church Missionary Society. Harry’s dad David, a communications director, and Kirsty, a nurse, served in Uganda, Egypt and finally Cyprus before the family came back to New Zealand. Harry chose to be a Christian when he was seven years old and continued to grow in his faith. “I was inspired by the ethos and values of Jesus and the importance placed on justice and equality. I think growing up in poorer countries made me more aware of the importance Christians place on helping others, whether they are of the same faith or not.” Harry joined his first youth group while at Paraparaumu College and lead his first one in his final year at Wellington College. While at Victoria University he continued

to lead youth groups including some for prisons, joined the New Zealand Army Territorials, and then moved down to Christchurch to complete his Masters in Environmental Science. When the second earthquake struck Harry was in the city centre. “After the earthquake I actually got quite crook, I think from sewage contamination, and ended up in hospital. “Aimee rang me when I was getting discharged and asked if I was well enough to fly to Hamilton. When I arrived she cooked us steak and chips with a cold beer and Die Hard 2.” It was shortly after that the couple decided to marry and Harry was invited to train to be a minister. “I was naturally attracted to ministry. Faith is about being transformed by Christ. It is a call to love people and felt like the natural best place to be.” Harry feels the history of the Anglican faith is one of its strengths. “It is an institution which is almost 500 years old with traditions, checks and balances to draw on. This gives it the benefit of depth.” In his new role, Harry is looking forward to building on the work which has already been done by Greytown’s previous vicar Andy Eldred. “Greytown is a great place with a lot of love. I want to build on that and become even more community focused. “We are both passionate about ministry with children, youth, and families. We also really value people in general and developing authentic relationships so we have made hospitality a central theme to our ministry life together.”

MAURICE O’REILLY - MAKE$ CENTS ACCOUNTANTS AND BUSINESS CONSULTANTS Maurice has that wonderful combination of people skills, experience and a practical approach that he brings to his business which is based in the Wairarapa and Upper Hutt. He credits his ten years experience in the banking industry that gave him the work and life experience to apply what he learned while studying his accountancy degree. “I much prefer the practical nature of getting on and doing something, rather than the theory,” says Maurice. As well as a Bachelors degree in Accounting he has a Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting. After working for accountants in the Wairarapa and Wellington, he could see the best of what accountants could offer in both the smaller regional towns and bigger cities. He decided he could do things differently – better. “I’m going to do this,” he thought. Maurice bought a small existing bookkeeping business in Upper Hutt and went about rebranding and focusing on what he felt was key to accounting – making it make sense – for the clients. “You can show clients all fancy graphs and reports you want, but at the end of the day if it doesn’t make sense or isn’t meaningful to the client, what’s the point,” says Maurice. He goes on to say he likes to ensure his clients understand the information so they are empowered in their own business.

manager and GST administrator who are based in Upper Hutt. Over time his clients, who range from rural to manufacturing and small businesses to franchises, have stayed with him even if they have moved elsewhere in New Zealand. Maurice enjoys working with his wide range of clients across a variety of areas from business planning and every day tax issues through to trust reviews and succession planning. He loves working with his client’s on their business and personal goals, particularly at the early stages of business and then watching them grow. “I like to help people look forward 5, 10 or 20 years, to plan what their future will hold for themselves and their families,” he says. When it comes to technology, Maurice’s approach is just as practical as ever. Rather than having a ‘favourite’ accounting software that he recommends, he carefully matches the software to the business – or runs with whatever the client is already using if it is working for them. Maurice gave feedback to the developers of the now internationally renowned Xero on how to improve their package from the customer’s perspective. Maurice grew up in the Wairarapa and enjoys the contrast of working between the country and city. “I can’t imagine it any other way,” he says. When prompted as to why, he said, “The golf is easy. Life is easy. The weather is better”.

Maurice has a great work/life balance which is split between his home office in the Wairarapa and the shop front office in Upper Hutt. His clients are welcome at either of his offices. While Maurice himself tends to service his Wairarapabased clients, he is backed up by his entire team of two accountants, a client services

RELISHING THE CHALLENGE OF A NEW ROLE

LEGAL EAGLES

L - R Dean O’Leary, Shannon Norling, Christopher Williams

GAWITH BURRIDGE LAWYERS SHANNON NORLING

SHAYNE APPELMAN - CRIGHTON ITM GREYTOWN Shayne Appelman is the new sales representative for Crighton ITM Greytown – but he’s certainly not new to Crighton ITM. Up until four months ago, Shayne had been Crighton ITMs Yard Supervisor. Chris James, branch manager, explains “Our previous sales representative had been with us for a long time and had great relationships with our customers. We needed someone who could take over the role seamlessly so our customers wouldn’t be impacted by the change. Shayne already had existing relationships with all our customers and was the perfect person for the job”. It seems that Shayne required a bit of convincing to move into the new role but is enjoying the challenges. “I had been yard supervisor for seven years or so and knew our customers well. But it has been a big change going from at the end of the sales process to the beginning,” says Shayne. It has been a learning curve but one that Shayne is enjoying. “It’s a challenge for sure, but I’m loving it. It’s great to be doing something different and getting out and about in the Wairarapa,” he says. Shayne has an extensive knowledge of the products he has to offer his customers having worked with them for so long. Shayne has a strong building and project management knowledge, going back to when he was just 12 years old being around his father who was a builder. Being a sales representative requires a

certain personality, and Shayne has all the traits you could want in a representative, “He has to be one of the friendliest, trustworthy and dependable people I know, and he’s doing incredibly well in the new role,” says Chris. Chris also credits Shayne’s Dutch heritage for his strong work ethic, saying “Shayne always goes the extra mile for his customers – he did it in his previous role and he has brought that same attitude of putting his customers first to his new role”. Making the change from managing product in the yard to making sales and being the face of the company has been a mindset shift for Shayne, but he has managed the adjustment well. One thing that has helped is the bonus welcome pack when new customers open a new account. “It’s a great way to get new customers and a helpful opening introduction. The customer doesn’t even need to buy anything – it’s no obligation. If they open an account, they get the bonus welcome pack – it’s win-win for me and the client,” says Shayne. Shayne’s team was understandably very sad to see him go. “The team have been so supportive in my new role, I couldn’t have done it without that support. And at the end of the day we are all still one big team,” says Shayne. Shayne has lived in Greytown since 1980 and knows the Wairarapa community well. “I love this region and its people”, he says.

Shannon came to law in a slightly roundabout way – picking up a lot of helpful experience along the journey. Originally following the family tradition in painting and plastering – Shannon decided to study business at Massey Auckland. However, when his favourite paper turned out to be business law, Shannon decided to transfer to the University of Waikato to embark on a law degree. After working in the legal field in the Waikato straight out of university followed by a short stint on the Gold Coast, Shannon returned to his original trade. That business experience has given him a good understanding and empathy for people. However in his 30s Shannon decided it was time to bring his family back to his hometown in the Wairarapa and eventually returned to law. Shannon’s broad business experience has given him a very practical, problem-solving approach. “I love the diversity and variety of working in the legal profession. There’s always something new – different people with different matters to solve,” says Shannon.

CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMS

It was Christopher’s Secondary School history teacher who first inspired him to think about studying law after Christopher showed a proclivity for history, even winning the history prize in his final year. He encouraged Christopher to pursue a career in law after Christopher made it clear he did not wish to be a historian (he would rather deal with living people than have his nose buried in texts). The fact that he made it through the University of Otago’s stringent culling process gave him the confidence to continue on this path. Of the 800 would be lawyers who sit the LAWS101 end-of-year exam, only 200 are allowed to reach their second year. After university Christopher moved home to Greytown to complete his Professional Legal Studies and worked on some local

farms. During this time he was lucky to find the perfect position at Gawith Burridge. Christopher describes himself as a people person, so he really enjoys the interaction and helping people through important and often stressful situations. “I love working with our clients and enjoy going through the process with them and, of course, doing my absolute best to get a great result,” he says. “It helps I have lovely colleagues who have been excellent mentors and have become good friends”. Christopher plays rugby for Greytown and enjoys practicing his guitar. He has almost given up on dreams of becoming a Hurricane or a Red Hot Chili Pepper.

DEAN O’LEARY

Dean has been at Gawith Burridge for over a year now but has been practicing for over 20 years, having passed the bar in 1997. The first 15 years he worked primarily in commercial law but has found over the last five years his communication skills have come to the forefront in dispute resolution work such as relationship property, employment issues and estate disputes. Dean admits it was a slightly idealistic social conscience that drew him to study law in his mid-twenties and he liked that he would be able to help people solve issues and problems. He also jokes it was because he was not good at maths, despite starting his working life in banking. Practising law overseas on working holidays provided an interesting challenge. Dean spent four years in Australia and the United Kingdom. He says while the fundamental legal principles in each country are the same as New Zealand, the specific rules and legislation can be quite different which helped “keep him on his toes” and learning. Dean gets the most satisfaction out of helping a client get through the process and out the other side. “Getting the best result possible for my client makes my day,” he says.

RECOGNISED AS ‘EMERGING ELITE’ MATT SPICER – LOAN MARKET Matt Spicer has yet again achieved a top 10 result in the customer choice awards for Loan Market. And it’s not surprising given the fantastic feedback he gets from his customers. All Loan Market customers are surveyed at the end of the loan process to ensure a high level of quality across more than 120 mortgage advisors throughout New Zealand. “Very professional, made it easy, no stress”, “Knowledgeable, friendly, efficient and caring” and “Very easy to deal with, very efficient, positive and just a great overall experience”, are just a few of the overwhelmingly positive comments Matt has received in the past month. Proud, yet modest about the awards, Matt says. “While I don’t focus on the awards and the feedback, I do get a little kick out of doing so well”. Matt has now gained ‘Emerging Elite’ status that recognizes outstanding achievement across a combination of three categories - the number, dollar value and revenue from loans settled. Matt’s passion for his industry and helping people into their new homes is evident as he talks about his work, “I love helping people into their first homes, second homes, retirement homes, dream homes, lifestyle blocks, building their property portfolio, building, reverse equity homes to help people live well in their ‘twilight years’ to get that new car or hip”. People are often surprised – and occasionally dubious – that a Loan Market mortgage advisory service is free. Banks pay mortgage brokers a fee for bringing

them a client. The service is unbiased –Matt matches clients to the most appropriate banking service and ensures the best deal to match their requirements. “I love getting a great deal for my clients and enjoy working with people and making it happen,” says Matt. Matt enjoys making the process as easy and stress-free as possible – including meeting clients at places and times that suit them best. He enjoys the flexibility of owning his own business which means he can watch and assist at his children’s sport and activities. His children, aged 13 to 22, are all studying or working here in the Wairarapa. Matt bought the Wairarapa Loan Market franchise three years ago and have a total of 16 years in the industry as a mortgage broker and advisor, as well as 10 years in the banking industry. Loan Market has recently expanded with a Greytown office ‘manned’ by Rachel James. Matt’s approachable and practical nature means it’s worth having a chat even if you’re not sure whether or not you can get a mortgage. His clients work with him over years, coming back to him at each new mortgage. For first homebuyers it can be useful to have that initial chat to know exactly what you need to do to be ‘mortgage ready’. “I don’t want to see anyone overextend themselves so much they can only afford baked beans on toast. But on the other hand, if people know by paying off some short term debt for example, they’ll be in a much better position, that can make all the difference,” says Matt. You’re left in no doubt that you’re in very capable hands when dealing with Matt Spicer.

Alex Bilton leads a highly skilled and passionate team at Motorworks Masterton. Together, Bruce, Ben, Dan, Jacob and Mickey make up the Motorworks team. Casey Morris, the Service Manager behind the Motorworks Masterton team, is very proud of “the boys”, saying “They are the business. They are like car ‘doctors’ – they diagnose, perform surgery and make your car feel better”. The team members have complementary skills and work in their respective areas of strength. The work done at Motorworks ranges from simple mechanical issues right through to top end auto-electrical work and air conditioning. Alex particularly enjoys top-end electrical work. He is one of just two top-end auto-electricians in the Wairarapa. He particularly enjoys the challenge of creating one-off brand new electronics. For example, he has a reputation for customising classic cars ‘turning’ them into modern electronic versions and working with drag cars where splitsecond timing is essential for safety at top speed. “You need to know when you push a button that a shoot will pull when you’re going that fast,” says Alex. Another example is fitting automated awnings to high-end caravans. The high-end customised jobs are built from scratch and helps to keep the team enthusiastic and at the top of their game. Motorworks’ customers are always thrilled with both the result and the service they receive. The team pride themselves on both – and it is evident in everything they do. “They love the challenge of a really

difficult job – the more interesting the better,” says Casey. The team is highly skilled, and keeps their skills up to date. For example, recently some of the team attended a four-day training workshop on the latest air conditioning technology. At Motorworks, apprenticeships and ongoing training are key to keeping the industry moving forward. “We strongly believe in keeping our young people keen and motivated,” says Casey. Casey says the team members are all perfectionists and take a lot of pride in the work they do. “The boys are very conscious that it’s an honour to be working on someone’s car – it’s usually their second biggest asset and often a key part of someone’s business. The classic cars in particular are often very close to their customer’s heart – it might even be an heirloom for their children one day – that’s a big deal,” she says. The team at Motorworks don’t have to worry about work/life balance because their work is also a big part of their life. All the team members have some sort of carrelated project on the go at any time. Fun, yet highly professional, the Motorworks team always have safety at the top of their mind. “They’re very good with the customers, and keep jargon to a minimum. They take the time to make sure our customers understand exactly what they are doing and why,” says Casey. Every customer goes away with a nice clean car too. “The customers don’t usually see all the time, hard work and effort that goes on under the hood – so the least we can do is give them a nice clean car which they definitely appreciate!” adds Casey.

BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS - FRAME BY FRAME DAVID BUCKTHOUGHT, MIKE BUCKTHOUGHT AND JOCK BUCKTHOUGHT - CAPITAL PRECUT SOLUTIONS Tucked away in Papawai Place, off Ngaumutawa Road, it’s easy not to know that Capital Precut Solutions exists. In fact, it has been steadily growing since it was established in 2005, and is now a significant employer in the Wairarapa. There are two arms to the business. One is the factory which manufacturers roof and floor trusses, joists and beams, and timber framing for residential and commercial buildings. The other is CPS Design which was formed in 2011 to fill a gap in the market for a fast, accurate and reasonably-priced draughting firm. CPS was founded by David Buckthought and his son Mike Buckthought. David had previously run his own precut truss and frame business in the 1980s but had sold that and spent ten years as a police officer in the Wairarapa.

“Dealing with over 200 house plans a month, we began to see trends in house designs and noticed that some of those designs being produced weren’t entirely practical,” explains Mike. “We felt those designs could be created in a different fashion and more economically, while still achieving the same effect. “We also noted that some of the plans being produced by others were not clear and were sometimes hard for builders and other trades to follow. “We felt that we could apply some of the logic of manufacturing to our working drawings process to improve speed and efficiency, and therefore costeffectiveness. “ CPS Design consists of nine full-time draughtsmen, two helping clients with concepts, and the rest producing full working drawings.

David and Mike started the new business with just four staff. It got a boost when a fire at the Benchmark branch in NaeNae lead to them being asked to help fill orders, recalls Mike.

Three Licensed Building Practitioners and two trade-qualified builders with design qualifications have also joined the design team to bring a practical perspective to what works and what doesn’t.

Today Capital Precut Solutions is one of the biggest suppliers of timber frames and trusses in the lower North Island, mostly to building companies via wholesale timber merchants.

CPS Design has a firm understanding of council requirements - one of its most exciting developments are multi-proof consents that can be immediately signed off.

David manages the overall business, while son Jock Buckthought is Production Manager. Mike manages CPS Design which he describes as “a really exciting, expanding part of the business.”

Majority of the staff at Capital Precut come from within the construction industry and Capital Precut Solutions works to ensure they continue to progress in their industry knowledge and skill set.

NOT ONLY SURVIVING, BUT THRIVING, IN THE PRINTING INDUSTRY PETER WATSON - PRINTCRAFT

Peter Watson, or Pete as he is better known, is a bit of an institution in the printing industry of Wairarapa. He first started his apprenticeship at Government Print – which later became Webstar in the mid 80s. At the time, it was the Wairarapa’s largest employer, New Zealand’s largest printing press, and Australasia’s largest too at one stage. Pete came to Printcraft 18 years ago after moving home to the Wairarapa for family reasons after a 10 year stint in the Wellington printing industry. Pete originally trained as a ‘photolithographer’ – that entire trade has now gone. Printing is an industry that has seen dramatic change and Pete has been at the forefront of those changes throughout his career. Gone are the days of room-sized cameras and film – these days printing starts on the computer. The amount and pace of change would concern many people, but not Pete, who clearly thrives on it. “I love that I constantly have to adapt and grow with the new technology. Every year there is new technology or a new challenge to solve. You have to not only keep pace, but stay one step ahead,” he says. Pete adds that Printcraft founder, Lance, has been very supportive of keeping up with technology. “When I brought the idea of going to digital print to Lance, it was a big deal. But he saw the opportunity and backed me to take it forward”. Technology is important to Printcraft, but customer service is paramount. Pete and his team has a solid reputation for delivering exceptional customer service. There are plenty of printers around New Zealand…but the difference at Printcraft is you’re dealing with the expert – not the sales representative. A customer can go anywhere and get similar quality and price – but to match the level of service Pete and his team achieve would be difficult. This means Printcraft has customers all around New Zealand – customers move and ‘take’ Printcraft with them or through referrals and national branches.

Pete particularly loves a challenge to solve. So the trickier a packaging issue or print requirement is, the better. Pete and the team also believe in customers for life – and this extends throughout the whole business – customer-facing or not. Pete follows a project through from beginning to end. Helping the customer decide on the best design, right through to mock up and seeing their satisfied smile at the final product. “Our customers feel like part of our team. Every project is important to us. We get just as excited about a business card. Who knows where it will lead?” says Pete. Given an opportunity to mention anything else at the end of the interview, Pete casually says, “Oh yes, I was made General Manager recently”. He probably could have mentioned that at the beginning…I’m sure the reasons for the promotion would be Pete’s experience, excellent customer relationships, and rapport with staff. But according to Pete, Lance wants more time with the grandkids and the boat….did we mention Pete’s modest?!

And who can blame him? It’s a “stunning spot” looking out over his next-door neighbours, the cows. Eric describes, the kids as fantastic, the staff as great and the school as a pleasurable place to work. In fact, you could be forgiven for forgetting that Dalefield has recently come through a period of change. The school has, for the first time in a long time, its very own elected board of trustees. The excitement across the entire school at being in charge of themselves again, is palpable. “It’s been a challenging time of transition for the school. But now we are in a really good space in terms of learning programmes, a future focus and fresh beginning. We’re cooking with gas now,” says Eric. Eric points out that the children and parents at Dalefield School are all committed to being there and making it work. The fact that they have to go out of their way to get to school – 4.5kms out of Carterton – means their decision to attend Dalefield was a conscious one. “Parents choose us because they want their kids to get that country school experience. They embrace it - the muddy feet, the frost on the field, and the build-up to Lamb and Calf Day,” says Eric. Dalefield is a full primary school meaning its 53 children range from new entrants to Year 8. The school can accommodate up to 20 more students and is very

welcoming to newcomers. Eric teaches in class two days a week, which means he has a good understanding of each of the children’s strengths and weaknesses. He thoroughly enjoys retaining that strong interaction with the children and believes it makes him a better principal. However, it’s not without its challenges given that he still has all the ‘normal’ duties of a school. Size doesn’t always matter when it comes to running a school – everything still has to get done. However, Eric describes the teaching principal role as a “win-win” for him and the children. Eric came to this role after teaching at Martinborough School for two years. Before that he taught in Wellington for a number of years including 11 months as acting principal at a larger school. Prior to teaching Eric had a wealth of experience in varied areas such as landscape design and building which often comes in handy. But the turning point came in 2005 when he committed to teaching for life. Describing his leadership style as very collaborative and inclusive, Eric is leading a programme that will establish a set of school values. He is also very proud of the school’s new logo - a year 7 student designed the initial concept. The school is also sporting brand new school shirts and classroom furniture. But as Eric himself says, “Those are the tangible things, but it is the intangible things that I’m most proud of…The buzz of excitement and genuine will of the entire school community to constantly do better”.

A small school with a semi-rural heart, 4.5 km from the centre of Carterton. We are a full primary offering a unique and picturesque learning environment. Dalefield Road, Dalefield, Carterton

SOLVING BAD TV RECEPTION

THE SKY IS THE LIMIT RICHARD HALL - STONEHENGE AOTEAROA SEAN NYBOER - THE CABLE GUY Sean Nyboer has rebranded as ‘The Cable Guy’ – a most appropriate new name for his business. Sean bought Aerials Are Us from the previous owner who he had trained and worked under for eleven years. It was a big move at the time for a young man. But as Sean himself says, “It was an easy decision. I felt ready for it”. And by all accounts he was. For now, both old and new brands will operate alongside each other. If you have ever wanted to be one of those people who has all your ‘mod cons’ connected correctly with perfect surround sound and knowing exactly which remote to use and which buttons to push, then Sean is your man. In fact, he could do with a superhero cape as he races around the Wairarapa solving tangled cables and TV reception woes. Sean says one of the most common problems he comes across that he can easily solve is bad TV reception. Often customers have been told, or have assumed, they “just have bad reception where they are”. However Sean says that nine times out of ten he can solve that problem – it’s very rarely anything to do with the reception. Behind every good man is a great woman as the saying goes. And in this case, it is Sean’s Mum, Caroline! At this point

Caroline interjects to mention Sean is single if we can work that into the article! (There you go, Caroline). Caroline is clearly proud of how her son has stepped up into his new role as business owner. “He’s great with people and loves getting out and about. He’s grabbed the business with both hands and I couldn’t be more chuffed for him,” she says. If anything it is possibly Caroline who has been on a steep learning curve learning the latest technology! But always supportive, Sean jumps in to say that his Mum is a fast learner and he couldn’t be out doing what he is doing without her support at the office. Sean says he has had a few funny jobs where something appeared not to be working, but it turned out that the batteries were flat or it was the wrong remote. But he’s more than happy to help out with those jobs too saying “No need to be worried about calling for any issue – big or small”. At the other end of the scale, Sean enjoys new build jobs where he prefers to be involved early in the process so that decisions can be made to ensure cabling issues are sorted in advance. For example with a trend towards open ceilings there isn’t always a crawl space to allow for cabling to be put in after a house has been built. “It’s best to get advice early to achieve the best result,” he says.

Wairarapa’s specialist in

It’s impossible to meet Richard Hall and not be immediately captured by his charm and personality. Maybe it’s his enthusiasm, maybe it’s that he’s English. But it makes you want to become an astronomer. Perched on a hill with 360 degree views just east of Carterton, is Stonehenge Aotearoa, a replica of the original Stonehenge in England. “We have pristine skies here in Wairarapa that we take for granted. But it makes for spectacular viewing of the night sky,” says Richard. Stonehenge Aotearoa is a full scale working version of the original Stonehenge and gives visitors a chance to get up close and personal to see how stone circles, among other astronomical wonders, impacted civilisation. Richard is already working away on the next big exciting project, an observatory for Carterton. He’s secured funding designed to promote science to get the project kickstarted. He is also working on this year’s almanac which happens to be the 20th anniversary calendar edition. President of the local astronomical societies, Richard also somehow manages to run a “little” farm on 25 acres alongside Stonehenge Aotearoa. All of these passions come together to form Richard’s version of ‘retirement’. But when you know he used to be an electrical engineer that worked on significant projects that earned him the title of “The Million Dollar Man” it makes a little more sense. “My last big project was working on the Cook

Strait cable between the North and South Island. I would need to shut down the 100,000 volt cable occasionally that meant every other coal station would be fired up and working incredibly hard at a cost of around a million dollars for every hour it was shut down!” he says. But as Richard says, it keeps him young – both physically and mentally. So what inspired this enthusiasm? Richard credits his mother who took him to visit many different natural history and science museums that sparked a fascination. “I loved that certain moments in history were captured forever more,” says Richard. Richard’s fascination with all things unknown extends to explorers, saying “Can you imagine what it would be like for an explorer as you head over a hill for the first time, having absolutely no idea what was on the other side?” “We think we know our history but parts were conveniently left out to suit the political context,” says Richard. The extent of the meddling even extends to your star sign! To expand your mind and for a very enjoyable experience visiting Stonehenge Aotearoa is a must. To get the truly interesting stories Stonehenge Aotearoa is best experienced through a guided tour available most days throughout summer. As we know is usually the case, behind every great man is a wonderful woman, and in this case it is wife Kay. Upon approving this article she commented, “I can see why I married him”.

CLEAR POOLS LTD MATTHEW PHILLIPS Arrived from the UK 7 years ago to experience the lifestyle and opportunities that New Zealand has to offer. Matthew started his family here in Masterton and values the idea of his kids growing up experiencing the outdoor character that rural life brings, which its equal isn’t found anywhere else in the world. Now in a locally owned family business, helping other families enjoy the outdoor lifestyle, with a background of farming, hospitality and landscaping Matthew has played a quintessential part in making Clear Pools a success.

THE MEN BEHIND THE SEEDS OF SUCCESS

MURRAY QUIRKE, MARK FOSTER, ROBBIE SPEARS AND DAVID LEE - SEEDS & CEREALS FEEDING SOLUTIONS The heart of the locally owned seed industry in the Wairarapa is Seeds & Cereals Feeding Solutions in Masterton.

produces Seeds & Cereals own popular range of stock feed as well as tailored mixes for clients.

Its plant, just behind the Seeds & Cereals retail store in Ngaumutawa Road, grows grain and small seed and sources a variety of seeds - mostly maize, barley, oats, wheat and rye - which is processed either as seed for re-cultivating, or as feed for animals.

David Lee is responsible for dressing, mixing and treating seed that will be used for cultivation. David has been involved with harvests in the Wairarapa in one role or another for 47 consecwutive years from labourer to export seed inspector.

Because Seeds & Cereals is an independently owned company, it is able to source seeds from anywhere, with around 60 percent being from the Wairarapa and the rest from other parts of New Zealand. Once processed, most of it is sold in the Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay, Wellington.

He recalls making daily visits to the plant in the 1980s as a grain & seed clerk when it was owned by stock & station company Dalgety & Co. The final member of the team is Mark Foster who has been with Seeds & Cereals for the past nine years as the plant’s orders and dispatch officer.

Production Manager Murray Quirke, who has been with Seeds & Cereals for the past six years, is responsible for processing and dispatching wholesale orders. This includes liaising with wholesale suppliers and customers, and in particular Seeds & Cereals retail stores.

Wairarapa born and bred, after having 30 years of working in the aluminium joinery business, John decided that a change in profession was essential for experiencing the most out of life. He has welcomed the change that working outdoors has brought and enjoys the satisfaction and challenge of leaving, a once dirty murky pool, in a crystal clear condition. Now servicing pools for almost 10 years, estimating over 12,000 pool cleans in that time, John is a highly valued team member here at Clear Pools.

ROB HARVEY Rob and his family moved back to the Wairarapa over 5 years ago after 10 years of working and living in Wellington. They moved back because “the lifestyle in the Wairarapa was unbeatable” When the opportunity came to purchase the pool business in Masterton, Rob seized the chance to have a locally owned family business. It has been, and will continue to be, a privilege to be able to provide quality and professional services for all of Wairarapa’s pool and spa owners. The climate here, with our hot summers, makes cooling off and relaxing in and around your own pool a pleasure those living in Wellington only dream of. Rob and the team at Clear Pools are looking forward to many more years that the satisfaction of servicing pools in the Wairarapa will bring.

IT’S SPRING CLEANING TIME! EVAN MORGAN - OWNER OF CHEMDRY WAIRARAPA With the warmer temperatures comes the urge to throw open all the windows and give the house a really good spring clean!. Especially with the mud and grime that migrates indoors on feet and paws and of course soot generated from the winter months of log burning. Also, Christmas is looming and it always nice to have the house in tiptop shape for visiting family and guests over the holiday season. Evan Morgan, owner of Chemdry Wairarapa, and fully qualified Technician – Tim, enjoy getting out and about amongst the beautiful landscape of the Wairarapa, meeting clients, and discussing their cleaning and restoration requirements. Behind the scenes, Evans wife Katherine, keeps everything running smoothly and is usually the one you’ll speak to on the phone or onsite at the Chemdry Wairarapa premises. Services include, Carpet and Furniture cleaning and Protection, Rug cleaning, Specialist Stain Treatments, Pet Urine Removal Treatment, Water Restoration, Fire/Smoke and Odour Restoration and much more. We can even take care of your pest control at the same time. Chemdry is a global franchise, that means Evan and Tim have access to the latest

advances in technology and training. Many of our cleaning products are GREEN CERTIFIED, which is great news for the environment and safe and non-toxic for the family and pets. Our Hot carbonation Extraction process, using a Green Certified solution, removes an average of 98% of common household allergens. NO phosphates or Detergents, NO dirt attracting residues and uses 80% less water than typical steam cleaning. Evan or Tim are available 24/7 to deal with emergency restoration jobs. For example, when a flood has occurred in your property, the carpets and flooring are the first area that should be taken care of promptly, to prevent further damage from occurring. Leaving the water damaged carpet for an extended period of time can result in expensive additional repair work needed, and it’s also not a healthy environment for you or your family to be in. Our workshop and office is based at 143 Cornwall Street, so those rugs and other items can be dropped in to us. Chemdry has recently gone through a refresh with new van signage, so keep an eye out for Evan & Tim in those bright green vans!.

TIGHT-KNIT TEAMWORK MCKENZIE’S ELECTRICAL 2000 The sense of teamwork is very tangible at McKenzie’s Electrical 2000 as they go about their very busy and varied workdays. Russell Keys, director and inspector, is very proud of his highly skilled team and how well they work together. “We are lucky to have such a strong team. It means we can let them get on with what they do best,” he says. The team includes fully qualified registered electricians Blair Gard’ner, Jimmy Whitaker, and Lisa Ireland; and apprentices Dillan, Matthew and Shane. The team members have complementary skillsets that mean together, they can handle virtually anything thrown at them.

things like set up security systems that allow you to see what is going on, unlock a door, or turn off the power - all from your phone remotely. You don’t even need to be in the same country! Which could come in very handy when you have one of those ‘did I turn the oven off?’ moments as you head off on holiday. Lisa enjoys working with the team, saying they are a great team to work with and Carrollyn and Russell are great employers. Although she admits one of the ‘perils’ of working in a male-dominated industry is the lack of toilets available onsite!

McKenzie’s do a wide range of electrical work from industrial and commercial through to residential, including new builds and renovations. McKenzie’s has a strong reputation for being the team to call for the harder, bigger jobs. For example they have done significant industrial projects such as moving an entire chipping plant to a new location and updating the old gear. The team enjoys the challenging jobs that keep them on their toes and ensures each day is different. Or, as Blair puts it, they like the jobs that require “a bit more brain work”.

The sense of ‘team’ goes as far as getting the team involved in hiring new recruits. Potential new team members have one (paid) week working with the McKenzie’s team and are reviewed by team members who get a considerable say in who gets the position. “The team have to have confidence in who they are working with from both safety and ‘team fit’ perspective,” says Carrollyn Keys who keeps the team running smoothly from her very well outfitted office. Interestingly, the biggest thing the team look for is common sense.

On the team is Dillan, a third year apprentice and registered thermographer –Thermography involves thermal imaging of switchboards to detect heat faults via radiation.

Takarangi recently came through this new recruitment process and enjoyed it saying he found the team “very welcoming” and it gave him a chance to see if he would fit into the team well.

Jimmy is known for his expertise in the area of security. He enjoys the challenging technical nature of the work and can do

The sense of camaraderie and enjoyment of their work is obvious in this tight-knit and highly professional team.

TEEING UP FOR SUMMER

SHAUN, JOEL AND ROBIN - MASTERTON GOLF CLUB AND ALL TEED UP PRO SHOP MASTERTON GOLF CLUB

Shaun Hewitt, Joel Macklin and Robin Macklin definitely work in the best spot all year round - the Masterton Golf Club. Their office has wonderful 360-degree views of the surrounding Wairarapa region, they are doing what they love, and work with great people. What could be better? The Masterton Golf Club is an incorporated society run by a very supportive volunteer board. Those involved in the Club – from the board to its members and onsite team – are all very passionate about the Club which has been around for 118 years. Back in the 80s when the Masterton Golf Club was in its heyday, it had over 800 members. Golf was the ‘thing to do’ – a social, networking, and fitness opportunity. Golf is still all those things but unfortunately over time it is perceived by some as elitist or intimidating. Shaun and Joel are adamant that this isn’t the case and the Club always welcomes new members. Times have changed for the game of golf. “It’s all about fun, fitness and getting out there and enjoying nature,” says Shaun. “With summer coming on it’s a great time to experience the Golf Club.” Joel adds that Lydia Ko has done a lot for the reputation of golf as a sport for women and young people. He says that the fun “She Loves Golf” programme, supported by Seven Sharp’s Toni Street, is a wonderful way for women to experience golf in a supportive environment. Robin describes how golf as a sport, and the club in general, provides a great environment for kids and young people to learn good habits and morals. “I love that an 8 year old child can play a 65 year old. It’s a game for the whole family and you can play it your whole life.”

DARRELL JONES - THE CAFÉ

The café has a new lease on life since Darrell took over in March. Darrell is loving the new opportunity, “I love the golfing community. It’s nice to see familiar faces and get to know the regulars”. The café has a wide range of menus available and an upstairs

SHAUN HEWITT - RESIDENT HEAD PROFESSIONAL

JOEL MACKLIN - ASSISTANT PROFESSIONAL

ROBIN MACKLIN - HEAD GREENKEPPER

Shaun has a habit of picking fun industries to work in. His last career was in the wine industry. In his mid twenties he had a “Why not?” moment and began on the path towards becoming a PGA professional.

Joel, 28, began playing ‘serious’ golf at 19 and completed his three year PGA of NZ Apprenticeship in 2014. The three year NZPGA Apprenticeship. This involved working 40 hours a week in a golf shop, playing 30 rounds a year to the PGA playing standard and completeing more than 30 assignments on topics such as business management , coaching, club repairs, fitting equipment and sports psychology. He has grown up around the Masterton Golf Course because his dad, Robin, is the Head Greenkeeper (more on Robin later). Joel knows how lucky he is to be doing what he loves and his enthusiasm about golf is evident. “I made a decision that golf was what I wanted to do with my life and I’ve never looked back,” he says.

Robin, the head greenkeeper (and Joel’s dad) has looked after the Masterton Golf Club’s greens for 25 years. “I’ve been here since Joel was three, running through the sprinklers in his togs,” he laughs. It’s clear Robin has some stories to tell. Robin has worked on five different golf courses in New Zealand and the United Kingdom and had one short stint at the Nigerian Open in 1975. “In Nigeria the golf courses were more ‘browns’ than greens. We had to leave fairly quickly because there was a coup and the army took over. They were literally shooting across the golf course,” he says.

Shaun moved with his family to the Wairarapa in 2010 to take up the position of Head Professional at the Pro Shop. And he loves it. “The great thing about working here is you’re dealing with happy people coming to do what they love,” he says. He now owns the recently refurbished Pro Shop, All Teed Up, which has everything you need for a round of golf. Being the only golf course in the Wairarapa with golf professionals on site, the All Teed Up Pro Shop is the only place in the region where you can buy top quality golf gear. Keeping the shop stocked with all the major brands, including Titleist and FootJoy, Shaun ensures he keeps up with the latest technology to make those tiny adjustments that help make all the difference to a player’s game. “That’s a really satisfying part of what I do – helping people enjoy the game longer,” he says. Shaun also provides club fitting and other professional golf services (he is a repair expert), runs local tournaments, and competes on the NZ professional circuit when he can. He is known for being reliable, dependable, and knowledgeable.

Joel’s main responsibility is coaching, and tailors his approach to each individual’s needs. He enjoys coaching golfers young or old and new or experienced as everyone provides a different challenge. Joel’s goal is to increase the number of kids playing golf in region and runs a fun session for kids on Tuesday afternoons. He is known for his exceptional patience, positive vibe and “happy go lucky” approach. Shaun says that Joel is a great young coach and is able to relate to golfers of all ages, “There are only good things to come for Joel”. Joel also provides coaching at the other clubs around the Wairarapa and tries to get out on the course when he can to work on his own game.

Shaun and Joel agree that Robin has the toughest job, along with two other greenkeepers, dealing with the 40 hectares of golf course. After one of the wettest winters in Robin’s memory, it has been a challenging year keeping the greens playable. “The rain has been persistent and unrelenting. But that’s part of the fun of the job as well – it keeps it interesting – dealing with the seasonal changes,” he says. The upside of a wet winter is that it is much easier to keep the greens beautiful during summer. The greens could have been in a worse condition if it wasn’t for a new aerating machine, which the Club purchased strong community support from the likes of Trust House. Robin also credits the Club’s board who make sure the greenkeeping team have the right tools to do their jobs well.

Many people dream of turning a hobby into a business – especially one involving a favourite pastime. But Brent Goble and associate Gary Fisher have actually done it. What began as having some fun brewing beer for himself and friends has turned into a commercial brewery with an alehouse attached. It’s hard not to notice (and be impressed) that Brent has essentially taken some of his favourite things – beer, talking, and live music and made it work for himself as a business. The impetus for growing the business more seriously came when both Brent and Gary happened to be made redundant at the same time. “We had always talked about the possibility of brewing beer commercially, but being made redundant around the same time gave us just the push we needed,” says Brent. “Our friends were increasingly enjoying our beer and that also gave us the confidence to go ahead”. The original ‘hobby tank’ that they used to make beer for themselves is now the ‘test tank’ where they test out new brews and make the minute changes to consistently improve upon each brew. It’s fair to say that their friends are more than happy to play the role of ‘focus group’. The Alehouse – that used to be a storage room – opened mid-2014 and has become a hang out spot where anyone can come, feel welcome and talk politics, current affairs, weather while having a beer and listening to live music. Regent 58 was one of the first craft beers in the market just as people were becoming more conscious of their beer choices and moving away from the mainstream beer options that were available. So in many ways, Brent and Gary were ahead of their time. Ironically, Brent never liked the beer that was available as a “young lad” and only grew an appreciation for craft beer later in life. However, he also jokes that it may have been in his blood because his ancestors in England were hopgrowers and he took to the brewing process like a duck to water. These days he enjoys the science behind brewing – the delicate

balance and effects of grains, hops and even water on the end result. Brent recently dumped an entire batch of their best seller because it had “very slight phenolic flavours”, preferring to do that than risk their reputation which he firmly believes is only as good as your last batch. “Ironically, some of the more mainstream craft brewers attempt to make phenolic flavour seem like a good thing,” Brent says somewhat wryly. Regent 58 beer is naturally carbonated and free of many of the processes that tend to strip the flavour of commercially processed beer such as additional filtering and pasteurizing processes. The darker varieties of good craft beer, such as Regent 58’s Porter (which is already aged for up to a year) and Stout can also be cellared for several years and this will often provide an entirely different, fuller tasting beer. Brent is passionate about being a “true craft brewer who brews real ales”. “Despite not having the requisite beard,” he says.

SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT

JIM LAIRD - JIM LAIRD DRIVER TRAINING LTD If you’re going to be in control of some of the huge machines as photographed on this page, you want to have been trained by one of the best. The industry could be intimidating with names like scissor lifts, knuckleboom cranes and “testing groundspread trucks bout width and evenness of spreading fertilizer for known proof of placement” as Jim Laird says. However, with the right training, comes confidence and work opportunities. And Jim is just the sort of effective and efficient person you want to teach you. With 40 years experience in the transport industry and 17 years as an accredited licence tester, Jim is one of the Wairarapa’s – and probably New Zealand’s – most experienced course providers. His training runs across a huge array of vehicles and heavy machinery and all courses have NZQA accreditation. Some people need training to gain a licence for personal use – such as trailer licences, horse truck licences and standard passenger vehicle licences. All these courses can be completed in one day with the attendee’s own vehicles or a hire vehicle if necessary. The majority of Jim’s work is in heavy vehicle and machinery for work-use. Either the employees complete the work to improve their qualifications and increase their employability or employers will upskill employees. The work-related courses range from forklift and heavy machinery (e.g. front-end loaders, excavators and road rollers) and 4WD driver training. Another string to Jim’s bow is as a Certified Spreadmark Tester, calibrating fertilising equipment for maximum accuracy and effectively on ground and in the air. Jim describes the national standards and strict auditing requirements to ensure the training criteria are met as being crucial to giving attendees the confidence that the training they are receiving is top level and appropriate to the type of driving they will be doing. “Everything has to be done to a very high strict national standard. Employers and training attendees can have confidence in that,” he says.

training organisations such as NZTA, Competenz, MITO, Connexis and the New Zealand Ground Spreaders Association. He also has strong relationships with various transport companies and companies needing heavy machinery. Jim has steadily built up an excellent reputation over the course of his career. Jim has recently added another accreditation to his portfolio having been approved by the New Zealand Ground Spreaders Association to deliver their ground spreading courses. This is a significant accreditation given the very highrisk occupation – not only for the people involved but the environment too. “A lot can go wrong in this occupation – for the environment and the people involved. We want everyone to get home in one piece,” says Jim. Apart from the strict requirements of the training role, it is undoubtedly Jim’s approach that inspires confidence in his course attendees too. Jim makes an effort to deliver his training in a user-friendly and easily understood way. But it is his firm and quiet confidence and no-nonsense approach that certainly helps his trainees.

Asked about work/life balance, Jim admits he doesn’t have much at the moment. He can travel to deliver training courses all over the North Island and has spent 20 nights in hotels over the past month. He has someone else coming on board to help him soon so is hoping to get a little more balance then. With a renewed emphasis on health and safety being so important in the current work environment, Jim has been in high demand. He takes his teaching role very seriously. And when he’s not too busy, he can be reminded just how important his job is. With literally thousands of people attending his courses over the past 17 years he has played a part in keeping them safe. Although he’s far too humble to think about it too much.

One of six directors at Comag – a plumbing, gas fitting, drain laying, roofing and heating company. Warrick has been part of the expansion of their business into the Wairarapa. A certified plumber and gasfitter, Warrick is getting to know the locals and build a solid reputation for service. Satisfaction of a job well done in his customer’s eyes is clearly important to Warrick who loves his job which he has done since he left school in 2003. BATTNZ – SETTING THE GAUGE

FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH JASON OSBORNE - OSBORNE GROUP It’s easy to wonder if Jason Osborne could have imagined how successful he would be as an accountant when he decided that was what he wanted to do…at the grand age of five years old. Jason had always loved numbers so it was almost inevitable.

PHIL BUDDELL - NEUGENZ LTD Phil is the quintessential part–time inventor solving every day problems. It took over six years to develop the BATTNZ new fencing system. But it doesn’t look like it will take nearly that long for this revolutionary fencing innovation to take off since going to market in February 2016. Taking the ‘number 8 wire’ Kiwi mentality to the next level, Phil has developed a better material and structure for the battens that go in between the main fence posts on agricultural fencing to hold the wires the correct distance apart. The business name Neugenz is a play on the phrase ‘new generation’. A tenth of the weight of the traditional wooden battens, the New Zealand designed and manufactured battens are very easy to install. One of Phil’s clients in Auckland is thrilled with the BATTNZ system saying that it’s enabled her to help her busy husband out on the farm. “She was thrilled, telling me how she would never have been able to lug out the old wooden battens and staple them in place – but she can easily use our system,” says Phil. A key feature of the revolutionary battens is that they are much better for the environment. Traditional wooden battens are made with tanalised wood that is not good for the environment. The plastic BATTNZ system is made from fully recyclable material, and is not made with harsh chemicals that could leak into the environment. Phil is able to arrange installation for clients or people can easily do it themselves.

The idea came about when a fencing contractor friend of Phil’s came to him with the problem saying there had to be a better way. Phil worked on the idea while working as a mechanic and being a Dad. “The reaction has been amazing,” says Phil. “Some farmers are initially resistant thinking ‘if it was good enough for my father and grandfather, this it’s good enough for me’ but once they try it, they realise that the new system is a far better option to the old wooden battens. “Most people can see that the quality of the wooden battens has reduced over time – they’re not like they used to be. The traditional battens used to be made from trees that were 45 odd years old. Now, you would be lucky if they were 25 years old. That’s a significant difference in the strength and quality,” he says. The BATTNZ system is made with the latest UV technology which Phil says ensures they will last in New Zealand’s harsh weather conditions for 30 years. They have a ten-year warranty in place. The plastic is the same plastic as the insulators on electric fencing – only with better UV protection. Phil is thoroughly enjoying getting out and about and meeting people and telling them about his exciting new product. He also enjoys the flexibility of having his own business which means he can go on a school camp for example. Clearly Phil loves the process of coming up with these clever innovations – and is already thinking about the next one…

Clearly not afraid of hard work, Jason didn’t buy an existing firm with its own client base when he left the safety net of his previous accounting firm. Instead, starting with just six clients, he slowly built his client base to 800 clients over the past ten years, “I didn’t want to ‘buy’ my clients, I wanted to earn them,” says Jason. And the clients keep coming – usually by referral - which is something Jason is very proud of. Jason spends two days a week in the beautifully fitted out Greytown office that has been up and running for a year. Working alongside Jason is Gavin Hodder, associate director at Osborne Group, who also brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the team. Jason describes their complementary pairing as bringing similar philosophies but different backgrounds together. Gavin was also crucial to the creation of Maxim – a business consulting service - another new initiative from Osborne Group. Noticing that their clients often needed services beyond the normal scope of accounting, Jason and Gavin created Maxim. Designed to be used with or without Osborne Group’s accounting services – Maxim can add significant value to your current accounting services. Jason is proud of his proactive and forward-thinking team, which he freely admits is key to the success of Osborne Group. The team has grown to ten at the Masterton office and five in Greytown. When hiring, Jason is looking not just for technical skill, but also for the ability to relate to clients and fit within their enthusiastic and passionate culture. Jason encourages his team to be adaptable and challenge the status quo; always seeking improvement, rather than going along with how things have always been. In appreciation of their hard work, the team

is rewarded with very family-friendly and flexible working hours and conditions. “I couldn’t have done it without my amazing team,” says Jason. Jason believes in an ‘under-promise and over-deliver’ philosophy. It’s clear that Jason walks his own talk, and loves dealing with his clients at the grassroots level, getting out and about and meeting clients at their place of business so he and his team can better understand their clients’ needs. Osborne Group is very active in the community. Supporting Hospice, the local Diabetes branch, and various sporting endeavours as well as fun initiatives such as ‘Onesie day’. Even the boardroom at the Greytown office (fully equipped with all the latest ‘mod-cons’) is available for use by community groups. Jason loves the relaxed rural vibe of the Wairarapa juxtaposed with the closeness of a city fix not being far away when you need it. He’s actively involved in Greytown cricket since he left school – both playing and as president. He was also a founding member of the unusually named ‘Skulls’ football team. Not one to stand still or rest on his laurels, what is next for the ever-expanding and ever-improving Osborne Group? “I have a couple of things in mind…will have to wait and see…but watch this space,” says Jason, trying hard not to smile.

A REPUTATION FOR QUALITY SERVICE WILLIE HEPBURN - HEPBURN BUILDERS Willie Hepburn has built a great team with a wonderful reputation to match. In business ten years now, his team has grown to seven doing new builds and renovations around the Wairarapa. One way that Willie has grown that reputation through a perfectionist level of attention to detail and an eye for design. Willie, who has been fully qualified 16 years now, has a strong grasp on design principles having also studied some architecture after school. This is a significant benefit in translating an architect’s designs into the practical task of building a house. Willie himself preferred the actual hands on process of building and seeing how things worked and why – hence deciding on becoming a builder. And that decision has certainly worked out well for him! The second way that Willie has built his reputation is based on outstanding client service. He prefers the personal touch and likes to meet his clients early in the process before providing a quote to fully understand what their wants and needs are. As he says, “So much of building is actually about communication – between the architect, the client and the builder”. And that’s where Willie really comes into his own. Many people have a design in mind when they decide to build. Willie can play a key role in helping liase between the client and architect. Willie enjoys helping the client maximise value, for example giving advice about what design features would add significant value as opposed to those that might be expensive and not necessarily have much impact. Building a new house can be a very stressful situation and having someone like Willie on hand to advise and help manage the process between architect,

his own builders and sub-trades minimises that stress. “I’m very conscious of getting it right for our clients and making it as stress-free as possible,” says Willie. The same principles of design and communication apply to renovations. Hepburn Builders has a dedicated renovation team. “We love the process of turning an old dilapidated house into a beautiful home,” says Willie. Willie says it’s in his nature to want to help people and that shines through with his high level of happy clients. “There’s nothing better than seeing that happy client who is thrilled with their new or renovated home,” he says. And clearly the clients are very happy because most of the work comes through by way of referral from happy clients. Behind the Hepburn Builders team, helping to stay on top of things is wife Emma Hepburn as the Office Manager for Hepburn Builders and their other business, Quality Sheds. And this is definitely a traditional family business with a succession plan already in the making. Tom, 9, already chomping at the bit to start building, has most of the gear he needs, built his first toolbench at age 7 and is currently building picnic tables for sale. Georgia, 7, is already showing an inclination towards design. And Annabelle, 6, is singled out to be the interior designer. So clearly family is very important to the Hepburns, particularly on the weekend. “As long as Emma hasn’t got too many things to do on my to-do list,” quips Willie.
