Guthrie Bowron

arren Grantham has been involved in Guthrie Bowron and its predecessors in one way or another for 48 years. He now has second and third generations of customers coming into the shop seeking advice and purchasing products. He also has his “lovely wife” involved in the business and a great team of people working for him who he thinks of as family. You get the best of both worlds with Guthrie Bowron Masterton – the buying power of a big organisation – but the local feel of a strong family-based business. Sitting down with Warren, surrounded by memorabilia, you get a quick and enjoyable history lesson about how Guthrie Bowron has changed and grown over the years. For example, he remembers when it used to be ‘Smith and Smith’ and they sold hardware too, “We sold everything from door handles and gib board to pink batts back then,” he says. Smith and Smith turned into Guthrie Bowron in the mid-eighties and Warren took over the franchise in 1992. “It was a scary and huge investment at the time,” he says. “I had been managing the branch for 12-odd years, but it’s a different story when it’s your own livelihood - and the livelihoods of people that work for you - at stake.” Clearly, decades later, the brave move paid off. A ‘people person’ in every sense of the word, Warren talks about his team and regular customers – both retail and trade - as if they are family. “My favourite thing is dealing with the public. I like to be out on the floor, in amongst it,” says Warren. “It often means I end up working on paperwork late at night though!” he says. But you get the sense that Warren wouldn’t have it any other way. Warren was recognised with a ‘longest serving’ award at the last conference. “It was wonderful,” says Warren. “I received a magnum

of wine and the 200-odd attendees all stood and clapped. The lump in my throat was so big I couldn’t even speak. It was incredibly humbling.” Warren loves being part of a company that gives back all around the world. He was particularly excited about a trip to Fiji for a conference where attendees took part in helping a school in one of the poorer parts of Fiji. Everything was donated to the school by Guthrie Bowron and a few major suppliers. In one day, they painted the inside and outside of two classrooms, laid concrete paths and made a jungle gym. The project would have normally taken years to fundraise for the school. “We came away from that day buzzing,” says Warren. “Some of those kids walk barefoot for an hour each way to get to school and had never seen a concrete truck. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.” The Guthrie Bowron team also left the school with 60 sports balls to add to the worn-out few they had. Warren’s voice is well known on the radio. He shows me his carefully handwritten pencil scripts that he writes himself. Warren has never formally studied marketing but he understands it. “It’s all about building relationships,” says Warren. “I know what people want. You learn a bit over 48 years,” he quips. There are many other stories to tell…Like the conference when they assembled bikes for school kids in the outback of Australia. Or how he was one of the first representatives to build up a customer base in South Wairarapa that grew so big he had two full flat deck trucks delivering each week. Or the story behind the 32 coffee cup hooks in the staff room. But you might as well pop in and ask Warren yourself because he will probably be out on the floor helping his customers in any way he can.

The men behind Carterton District Council Carterton District Council

C

arterton is well-known for its beautiful and picturesque parks and landscapes. Many of the town’s most beautiful spots are kept so ‘picture-perfect’ thanks to the men working hard to keep them looking that way. “We have a great team working hard every day to keep our parks and outdoor spaces looking as wonderful as they do,” says Dave Gittings, Infrastructure Manager, Carterton District Council. Carterton District Council (CDC) is relatively rare in this day and age of outsourcing in that its parks and reserves work isn’t contracted out. “We’ve made a conscious choice to have the work needed to keep our parks and outdoor spaces up to scratch done by an in-house team,” says Dave. “Our team are so passionate about keeping Carterton looking great and you can’t ‘buy’ that sense of pride that our staff have. They’re meticulous”. Dave is particularly impressed with the amount of resourcefulness and the care the team take in their work – no matter what the work involves. “We’ve thrown all sorts of projects at them and they just handle it, no matter what,” says Dave. “Someone will say, ‘we need the event centre decorated like a forest for the Winter Festival, and by the way, it’s tomorrow, please!’ and the team will just get on and make it happen. They’re so helpful - so generous with their time and energy. It really is a pleasure to see it all in action”. Some of Carterton’s prettiest spots in the town’s centre include Carterton’s largest

park, Carrington Park, which has a lovely Band Rotunda, and children’s playground as well as sports facilities for cricket, soccer and athletics. Millennium Park was redeveloped just a few years ago with the introduction of the iconic Charles Rooking Carter Statue taking centre stage. Memorial Square houses the War Memorial Cenotaph and is a popular place for the town’s ceremonies, events and market days. Sparks Park in Belvedere Road is situated on 7.5 acres and is perfect for walking dogs and catching tadpoles. But more than ‘just’ keeping Carterton beautiful, the team doing it are committed to Carterton and the region beyond their day jobs. “All of our staff are committed to this region and its wellbeing,” says Dave. “We have a number of staff involved in different community activities on a voluntary basis, such as the A&P show, Resilient Carterton, Carterton Farmers Market and MenzShed for example”. The CDC team are a committed bunch with several staff counting their time with the council in decades rather than years. “Our longest serving team member began in 1977 and two began in the 1980s. Another began in 2001. Everyone genuinely seems to enjoy and get great satisfaction and meaning out of the work we do,” says Dave. The Clareville Cemetery is another place close to Carterton’s heart and a source of pride for the team ensuring it’s well-kept. “A district’s cemetery is in many ways the emotional

centre of a town,” says Dave. “They are special places with special meaning for our residents. Our team are very respectful and mindful of that when they carry out their work to make sure the cemetery is always looking well cared for – a beautiful resting place”. An important part of the work that CDC is responsible for is to network and work with other community groups playing a critical role in the future of Carterton. One of the groups that CDC work with is the Keep Carterton Beautiful Group. Keep Carterton Beautiful is a team of passionate people working on various projects with the purpose of, as the name suggest, keeping Carterton beautiful. “Keep Carterton Beautiful is an excellent community initiative that we are very pleased to support and be involved with,” says Dave. “They are doing some incredible work to ensure that Carterton continues to grow and improve and, of course, stay beautiful”.

and ingenuity in the way they keep an eye out for each other – and the wider CDC team”. For example a new Council initiative has made it as easy as possible for crew members working out and about to report ‘near misses’ or incidents while out in the field so that fixes can quickly be put in place to ensure that the environment is safe. “The team right throughout Council - from the accountants, to our building inspectors, to the venue management staff - are always coming up with inherently simple, practical and highly effective ways to improve their systems and processes. They’re very solutions-focused,” says Dave. “Just one example would be the team at the water treatment centre constantly strive to provide safe drinking water and work through a demanding compliance programme, all the while coming up with innumerable efficiencies they’ve figured out to make something work better”.

The team at CDC are also involved in a wide range of activities and facilities that ensure the wellbeing of the Carterton community. For example the Carterton Events Centre, Library, Information Centre, Emergency Preparedness work and Neighbourhood Support.

Not only resourceful at work, however. The men of CDC have a reputation of being the “hunter gatherers” of the Council. “No matter what staff function we have on, someone will go out and get what we need – catch a pig, or go fishing – and bring it back for us all to enjoy”.

As well as keeping the community safe, the team are very conscious of their own health and safety. “The team have a great track record for staying safe in their work practices,” says Dave. “They show a great level of care

“Perhaps most importantly, the men at the CDC all get on exceptionally well with their female counterparts. There’s a great deal of mutual respect and a sense of team spirit amongst everyone,” says Dave.

McKenzie’s Electrical 2000 “young men at work” Russell & Carrollyn Keys McKenzie’s Electrical 2000

R

ussell and Carrollyn Keys have always believed in providing opportunities for young people to enter the electrical trade. At the moment the Carterton couple have three apprentices - Matt Howard, 21, TK Williams, 22, and Shane Doust, 19. Matt’s background may seem a bit unusual for someone who is training to become an electrician.

It’s always about the bread at Baker Martin Grice Baker Featherston

I

f there are two things that make Baker what it is - it’s the bread and the community.

Martin Grice worked for six years as a pastry chef in a big hotel in Melbourne but yearned “to come back to a small community where you can make a difference”. He returned to New Zealand and while working at Icon restaurant at Te Papa, would make day trips over to Wairarapa. He took a liking to Featherston in particular. “I knew absolutely nothing about Featherston but could see it was a down-to-earth community.”

He uses the same sourdough starter as he has had for many years for his white, wholemeal multigrain, and rye sourdough loaves. He also makes a range of yeast-risen breads including ciabatta, parmesan, and rye & caraway.

“He was determined to be as traditional as possible.”

He joined McKenzie’s Electrical 2000 nearly two years ago after previously gaining a Diploma in 3D Animation and Digital Video at Yoobee School of Design in Wellington.

“PLC is a field that is becoming an increasingly important part of our business,” says Russell. “There are a lot of opportunities in it and a very limited supply of people with the ability to programme PLCs.” Offering apprentices the opportunity to specialise in an area that reflects their aptitude and interests, keeps them enthusiastic and motivated, says Carrollyn. “The industry is changing and we are preparing our young apprentices for the future. “When you are 18 or 19 and someone says give me four years of your life, it seems like a long time at that age. But if you give them another skill set as well, it gives them a much greater incentive to stick at it and do well.”

Matt grew up in Wairarapa and when the one-year course was finished, asked Russell and Carrollyn if he could do some work experience with them. “I needed a bit more experience and while electricians do not do exactly the same type of work as what I studied at Yoobee, there are a lot of areas where elements of what I studied there cross over.” The couple liked Matt enough to offer him an apprenticeship. “Matt is the type of person we were looking for,” says Russell.

Martin immediately moved to the town, and after many years of working for other South Wairarapa establishments, he opened “Baker” close to the rail crossing in the centre of town.

Like everything at Baker, Martin’s French pastries are all made on the premises and include almond croissants, hazelnut pastries, cinnamon brioche, and Mexican cheese & cornbread.

He was determined to be as traditional as possible, starting with his signage which mimics the typeface of your typical Featherston shop of a century ago.

Baker’s gourmet pies are made the oldfashioned way too, with no fillers. Martin’s only ingredients are meat, vegetables and wine.

He also makes his bread the old-fashioned way, with slow fermentation methods. “What we do here is 100 percent natural, not organic, but as close to natural as possible.”

These include beef & blue cheese, venison & beetroot, moroccan chicken with pistachio nuts, and pork & kumera. He has also recently added a new favourite; mushroom & lentil.

While customers appreciate his philosophy on life and business, it is the bread they come for, with his customer numbers growing from year to year.

While Baker is popular with visitors, Martin values being part of his own community and with that in mind keeps his baking at prices that are affordable for all Featherston residents.

Martin’s great passion is his sourdough range which makes up around 50 percent of the bread sold.

“I needed a bit more experience and while electricians do not do exactly the same type of work as what I studied at Yoobee, there are a lot of areas where elements of what I studied there cross over.”

A PLC can monitor and record run-time data, such as machine productivity or operating temperature, can automatically start and stop processes, generate alarms if a machine malfunctions and more. They are adaptable to almost any application.

Baker is open Wednesday to Sunday 7am to 4pm.

“Trades are still seen as something below university level, but in reality trades like electrical are up there.” Matt is learning the traditional technical skills to become a qualified electrician, but is also specialising in Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). PLCs are ruggedised computers used for industrial automation. They can automate a specific process, machine function, or even an entire production line.

f you want a new television installed, better reception, or more choices in what you watch, Sean Nyboer can help.

t was a Dingo that originally got Nick Dench into digging and to this day he has remained true to his roots. “I bought the Dingo to put up some limestone walls around our home and soon I was getting requests to use it from friends and acquaintances.”

topsoil for landscape projects or a new lawn.

Today Dingo Nick is still a small friendly family business with Nick’s son Marty Dench in charge of this part of the business. The only real difference is the vastly expanded range of tools from diggers to trucks. Much of Nick’s early work was gravel based driveways - which the business still specialises in today.

Dingo Nick can also save you spade work, digging trenches for concrete footings and shelter belt plantings and drilling holes for house piles, fence posts and tree plantings. Dingo Nick can drill a hole up to three metres deep by 600mm wide in a matter of minutes, and one hundred 350mm wide by 400mm deep holes in just over an hour, and depending on the soil and stone content.

Sean can supply all the necessary hardware for television reception such as UHF antennae, satellite dish and cabling, and offers competitive installation rates.

The business has excellent working relationships with Wairarapa’s best landscape designers and builders, and can manage a project from start to finish. A very public example of Dingo Nick’s capabilities in this area is the landscaping it carried out for Riverstone Park at Solway, Masterton, including its cute bridge over the stream that runs through the park.

Over the past decade, Sean has found everything from trees and hills, to ride-on mowers and egg incubators have affected reception.

These are prepared to the highest standard and will last for many years with very little maintenance. The team at Dingo Nick can also repair or resurface existing driveways to have them looking like new again. They can also supply and install the edging of your choice - timber, concrete or brick - which will further enhance the look and functionality of your new drive. Excavations with Dingo Nick cover just about everything that you can do with an excavator or bobcat. The hard work is taken out of building brick and paving patios and paths, retaining walls, timber decks, pergolas, raised gardens and garden edging, limestone rock walls, gabions, earth bunds and water courses. Piles of soil left over from excavations can provide perfect

Drainage projects are another speciality be they soak pits, drainage channels, lawn drainage, missing downpipes, or boggy parts of a section.

Nick is proud to say that after 15 years, Dingo Nick has thousands of happy customers.

Sean is able to install and problem solve anything to do with a TV. He brings 11 years of experience to each job, assisted in admin by mum Caroline Nyboer.

He can solve all problems with existing televisions from poor reception, to not being able to access channels, to dealing with external devices such as DVD players.

“Generally, I’ve got a good idea of what the problem is when I visit. Most jobs can be completed in one to two hours.” Sean can set up smart televisions to access Netflix, FreeViewPlus and the Internet, depending on the model. He can also install home theatre systems. He goes the extra mile for his customers, mounting televisions on walls, and making sure cables and outlets are in the best locations.

DINGO NICK DOES DRIVES It's the perfect time for driveways and Dingo Nick's tilt bucket excavator can quickly dig a new one or scrape your old one into perfect shape. For gravel or lime chip driveways, wooden edging, culverts, paths and tracks call Dingo Nick.

“Generally, I’ve got a good idea of what the problem is when I visit. Most jobs can be completed in one to two hours.” One thing that Sean has found with newly built homes is that their owners are often disappointed to discover that they have been wired to a standard plan which is not suitable. Sean can rectify this situation. Or better still, he can customise the cabling for a new home in the first place. Sean also looks after businesses, and provides solutions for rural broadband customers through Wireless Nation. Over the past 12 years Sean has earned a reputation for being friendly and trustworthy, with customers regularly commenting on how impressed and happy they are with his work. Outside work, Sean enjoys taking his dogs for walks around Henley Lake and going mountain biking. Original owners Julian and Tina Cheer who founded it in 1989 have now passed the keys of the business on to another couple, Ben Hooper and Jordan Luff, who took over at the beginning of this year.

He grew up on his family’s dairy farm, a member of a hot rod-mad family that also loves its horse racing - Ben’s grandfather owned Melbourne Cup legend Kiwi. Jordan caught the hot-rod bug when she joined the family and the couple are no strangers to Wairarapa, making regular trips to Masterton Motorplex where Ben is a member of his brother’s pit crew. The couple have quickly become a part of their community, with Julian and Tina pleased that their loyal customers were in safe hands.

Building up a solid reputation Warrick Ross Comag

L

ast year in the Men at Work feature we said that Warrick Ross of Comag wasn’t quite a household name yet – but he is well on his way to being one. Well, that is most certainly true now. Warrick is one of nine directors at Comag – a plumbing, gas fitting, drain laying, roofing and heating company. Warrick expanded their business into the Wairarapa last year. A certifying plumber and gasfitter, Warrick is now well-established with a solid reputation for service. “It’s been a fantastic year for us,” says Warrick. “We’ve gone from strength to strength and our clients have been just amazing”. And Warrick’s clients – some of whom are well-established building, real estate and property management companies - are clearly satisfied. “I’ve had some fantastic support from the building industry. For example I’m a preferred plumber at Mitre 10 MEGA Masterton,” says Warrick. “My clients like knowing I’m the main person they will get when they call for support. It’s a close working relationship I have with my clients which works well on both sides”. “Our company is still small enough to mean that we are very ‘hands on’ in our approach. You don’t get that with the bigger companies. And while I still want to grow, I want to stay small enough that I can maintain that personal approach”. Warrick has been in the industry since he left school, so he’s clearly very experienced. But its his other traits that also make him such a hit with his clients - honesty, reliability, professionalism as well as an eye for detail.

In fact Warrick is doing so well he has already taken on a plumbing and gasfitting apprentice, Mitch Hooper, and is still looking to recruit someone fully trained and highly experienced. “It’s very hard to find a great plumber,” he says. “Having an apprentice on board is fantastic because I can skill him up in the right way to do things. It’s like a fresh start where I don’t have to ‘unteach’ any bad habits. I enjoy having an apprentice on board – I’ve had a few during my career so far – I like taking them under my wing. But I’m really at the stage where I need a second highly skilled person working alongside me”. Warrick and his team can help with everything plumbing related in new homes or renovations, kitchens, bathrooms and laundries, hot water systems, maintenance and upgrades, water tanks and filter systems. And of course anything gas related such as installation and maintenance of gas cooking hobs, gas fires, and central heating/ducting; fitting and servicing hot water supply; servicing fridges; and motorhome appliances. Warrick also still enjoys being part of the broader Comag organisation, which means that he can draw on the skills and expertise of the rest of the team for larger scale commercial projects all over New Zealand. Comag is a member of the Plumbers, Gasfitters & Drainlayers Federation of New Zealand. Warrick and wife, Danni, plus their three girls are all settled into school and life here. “We’ve still got places to explore, but we really do feel like this is home now,” says Warrick.

But Brent is the first to acknowledge that it took all his staff performing together to achieve the award. Since winning the Mitsubishi New Zealand Excellence In Year-On-Year Sales Award for 2015/2016, Wairarapa Mitsubishi has continued to excel in its sale figures, reflecting the nationwide trend of the brand. Brent believes the fact that Mitsubishi is the fastest growing main stream brand in the country reflects the quality of its product. “You don’t grow that quickly without good products, and good after sales service.” He also notes that the success of Wairarapa Mitsubishi wouldn’t have been possible without the strong relationships built up with the Masterton community. Brent, Steve Thompson and Rodney Craig comprise the sales team at Wairarapa Mitsubishi. “We have a really positive sales environment. Everyone is easy to get along with and our main goal is the customer.” The workshop team is led by service manager Lachlan Renwick and foreman Grant Tatham. Workshop technician Neville McKenzie has

The Mitsubishi Fuso Canter is one of Wairarapa Mitsubishi’s line of light-duty commercial vehicles.

Parts manager William Pringle is another new member of the staff, while Brent’s dad Clive Cooper assists Trevor Jones in grooming and vehicle reconditioning. Cathryn Jones and Debbie Murray-Aynsley continue to serve in administration.

Country Life Interiors

C

arl Schdroski, along with wife, Toni, have been in the interior design and upholstery business for 30 odd years. Country Life Interiors are well known in Wairarapa and beyond. From gorgeous couches, beautiful buffets, statement pieces and giftware, to curtains, blinds, and fabrics, Country Life Interiors have it all. But perhaps not everyone realises that at the back of their stunning store, is a fully functioning workshop with a very hard-working Mike doing upholstery and restoration work. Mike is trained and specialises in the ‘deep-buttoning’ technique and restoring antique furniture. “Mike is magic behind the machine,” says Carl. “He is an artist when it comes to what he does”. Carl, also fully qualified, has plenty of experience making things look new again and still does some of the work. “I do enjoy the work out the back, but Mike is great at what he does so I pretty much leave him to it,” says Carl. “I love being out the front with the customers, helping them choose the perfect piece”. Carl’s knowledge comes in very handy not only when helping customers choose furniture, but also when helping them make decisions about whether or not to restore or reupholster a piece they already have. “I love helping our customers make decisions about whether they should refresh what they already have or not,” he says. “Sometimes something like a lounge suite, might have great bones and a lot of years left in it. It simply needs a bit of extra padding and some fresh fabric”. “Sometimes something as simple as adding wooden feet to a lounge suite can create a

modern new look,” he says. “Especially if a customer is personally attached to a suite. I enjoy giving that extra piece of advice that makes all the difference”. Country Life Interiors have customers who come back to them again and again thanks to the excellent service and advice Carl and the rest of his team offer. “We always make sure we give the best advice. What matters to us, is that our customers go away thrilled with a quality piece of furniture that suits their needs perfectly,” says Carl. Carl is well-versed in everything involved in furniture making – from the materials involved, such as leather, linen or fabric to knowing what’s inside a piece of furniture (foam or fibre, and springs etc). Carl also enjoys helping customers figure out the best placement for a piece in their home. “To me it’s all about quality and how long and how well a piece will last,” says Carl. “We have a ‘throwaway society’ these days where people swap out their lounge suite every few years. We would rather help people choose really high quality pieces that will last for a long time and even be handed down within the family”. Having a workshop on site also means that customers can choose from the incredible fabric options and have matching pieces made for them. “Customers often come in to choose fabric for curtains and then realise – and love – that we can also make them a matching headboard or cushions, or whatever else they want, too,” says Carl. Carl and his team are on hand to offer a free measure and quote plus delivery. “We’re always here to offer advice and help people make the right decision for them,” says Carl.

Daryl Cross

Sure Fire Ltd – Inferno Fires and Flexiroof aryl Cross set up Sure Fire Ltd this time last year and has two main products that can completely transform your outdoor area, creating an entirely beautiful and functional additional living space. “Outdoor spaces are incredibly important, especially somewhere like the Wairarapa,” says Daryl. “I think we underestimate just how much can be done to transform our outdoor space to become an extension of our living area”. Daryl holds the agency for Inferno Fires in and around the Wairarapa. Inferno Fires have a stunning range of attractive and durable fireplaces. The fireplaces come in different designs and finishes such as plaster, stone, schist or brick. “There’s nothing better than an outdoor fire to set the scene and create ambience in an outdoor setting,” says Daryl. “Sitting around a fire with a glass of red wine on a cooler night – it’s perfect”. The fireplaces even include a grill that can be used to cook your dinner in the outdoors. Daryl had known Wayne, the owner of Inferno Fires prior to taking over the agency and knew that he would be a great person to partner with. “Wayne and I had very similar values. For us it’s about having really happy customers who can trust us and know that we’ll do a great job,” he says. Judging by the number of referrals, it’s fair to say that their clients must be very happy with the result. Going along with the theme of outdoor fireplaces and outdoor environments, Daryl wanted a complementary product to add further value to outdoor areas. Eventually he found another exciting and innovative product called Flexiroof. Flexiroof is a permanent roof that can be extended out from a house creating a virtually waterproof space that provides shelter from the rain. The material it’s made out of provides 99% UV protection and is just slightly tinted to provide very light shade

from the sun while its clear glass-like material still gives you the feeling of sitting out in the sun. “The creator of Flexiroof is a very clever man. The material he uses and the patented design ensure that the roof is as waterproof as possible and provides excellent protection from the sun’s harsh rays,” says Daryl. Daryl was also drawn to the clean, simple lines of the roof that has a fresh and modern look. Together – or individually - the products can completely transform a backyard or garden into an additional living space that can be used throughout the seasons. Beyond working with the two key products, Daryl can provide additional landscape design services and can project manage a complete outdoor renovation including other aspects such as paving and decking. “I like to get to know each of my customers and work out what will work best for them,” he says. “We can create a fireplace and outdoor setting that is specific to each home and family to reflect the way they use their outdoor space”. Daryl is happy to chat to potential clients and provide them with a free no obligation quote. “We get a good sense of what will, and won’t, work and often have ideas that the client might not have thought of. At the end of the day, we want our customers to be really happy with the end result”. Daryl is enjoying being in business for himself and living in the Wairarapa.

“My wife Claire and I absolutely love it. After years in Australia and the UK, it’s great to be here”.

The man on a Rural Real Estate mission John Ritchie is a likeable chap with a disarming smile; a man of the land with feet firmly planted in fertile soil… enriched with his own miniature-donkey doo compost. With a lifetime of living off the land, his background reflects the dayto-day challenges and achievements that every person dealing with fickle weather, intemperate animals, and uncertain land, handles.

Best property management growth founded on friendship Keith Archer and David McHattie Archer McHattie Wairarapa Property Management

A

cup of coffee sealed the deal for Keith Archer and David McHattie when they decided to form a property management partnership.

“It made perfect sense to work under the same umbrella,” says David, “with residential property sales and residential property management a good synergy.”

Two years later, Archer McHattie has grown from 40 properties under management to well over 200.

“Keith has a great reputation. He’s very hands on.”

And while the business has flourished, so has the friendship between Keith and David. There have been plenty of other reasons to celebrate along the way as well, with the business winning the LJ Hooker national award for Best Property Management Growth Portfolio in 2016/17 and again in 2017/18 out of 85 offices, with Keith winning the 2018 Best Property Manager Award. Keith originally started out as a real estate agent but over time discovered he had a flair for the delicate art of property management, starting Keith Archer Property Management, with the sort of amiable personality that allows him to build positive relationships with both landlords and their tenants. Meanwhile, David was growing the property management arm of LJ Hooker McHattie Realty. The catalyst for the two getting together, was the extra office space available when LJ Hooker McHattie Realty moved to new purpose-built premises in Renall Street in 2016.

Keith is now assisted by two staff including his daughter Rachel who is the business’s dedicated property inspector. Among the many good reasons for landlords to use Archer McHattie is the increasing number of compliance regulations that are being introduced by government, says Keith who is making a submission to Parliament on the subject. Insurance requirements are also increasing, he points out. Then there is just the luxury of having someone else making sure the rent is paid and property cared for. “Doing it yourself is a false economy when you can have everything done for you for minimal cost,” says Keith. “It’s much better for landlords to not be personally dealing with their tenants as this works out better for both parties.” Keith is also able to give landlords accurate advice on appropriate rents that reflect the current state of the local rental market.

f you have any queries about your next building project, Shaun Harp is the man to talk to. The 54 year-old’s entire working life has been spent in the building and hardware industry in the Wairarapa. A font of knowledge, there is nothing he enjoys more than helping both professional builders and DIYers with their projects. At 16 Shaun went to work at C E Daniel’s Sawmill in Masterton, and later Davis Sawmill, before working in customer service at Martinborough Mitre 10. Shaun joined Masterton Mitre 10 MEGA in February 2015. He is not the only Harp at the Ngaumutawa Road store, as his father John has been working there for 32 years, and at age 76 still works four days a week in Power Tools Department. Shaun roughly estimates he knows around 95 percent of the Certified Builders and Master Builders in the Wairarapa. “Over the years I have gotten to know many of my customers and their businesses really well. I like to get out there and see what they are doing.”

Rathkeale College his knowledge online and through trade magazines. “Someone might come in and ask for something they have seen on the Internet. The great thing about Mitre 10 MEGA is that we have a lot of suppliers which is really cool. But if we don’t have what they are looking for, I can always find an alternative that works just as well - and sometimes better.” One of the advantages of using Mitre 10 MEGA for projects is that all the departments work together, Shaun points out.

“We have a really good team here. If someone has a project in mind that requires products and knowledge from Power Tools, Kitchen or Paint or any other department, we all help each other.”

He has also helped thousands of DIYers with everything from building garden sheds, to decks and planter boxes. “I’m here to help when someone comes into the shop with a project in mind. Often they are not sure of how to go about it so I can clarify what they will need and price their materials for them.” The world of hardware products is constantly changing, and with new products coming out all the time Shaun is constantly updating

elatively new Principal at Rathkeale College, Martin O’Grady, has been ‘on the job’ for four months now and is settling into the role well. “It’s been a wonderful start here,” says Martin. “The students, the staff and the families have all been so welcoming”.

recently on predator and pest eradication and the school is starting to see the recovery of native species in these areas. Coupled with this is the planned development of the old school farm into a primary industries Research and Teaching Hub.

Martin is a strong believer in focusing on establishing yourself first but he certainly has exciting plans to build on the exceptional reputation of Rathkeale College. “This is a great school and will continue to be. Student achievement is paramount and underpins everything we do here”. “Participation in sport and the performing arts are also compulsory and help build the type of citizen that we want for the future”.

Martin is well placed to lead this initiative having an Agricultural Science degree himself. “I want our students to see the primary industries as an exciting option for all of our students whatever their background or future aspirations may be.

But Martin does express his concern about young people’s health and wellbeing, which is clearly a passion of his. “Anyone in education currently is concerned about our youth,” he says. “One aspect of that is what I refer to as the ‘screenager effect’. Everyone agrees that technology is a fantastic thing, but our teenagers need balance”. Martin plans to use the beautiful 123 acre college campus and the college’s spiritual dimension to increase the balance in students’ lives. “That balance will become part of our point of difference,” says Martin. Adding that engagement in the outdoor environment has been shown in recent research to be helpful in disrupting the conditions that can lead to anxiety and depression that has become more common amongst young people. Martin believes the entire Rathkeale campus could be considered a Land Lab. So many opportunities exist to enhance the education of our students. There are areas of native bush that have had significant work done

“The primary sector is going to look very different 20 years from now. Technology, food safety and sustainability will all be crucial issues that our students of today will be handling. We need to really skill them up to be ready for that”. From a farming background himself, Martin grew up in the Hawke’s Bay and has spent most of his 30-year teaching career there including being Principal of Karamu High School for eight years. He also spent time as Principal of Feilding Agricultural High School before seeing the opportunity arise at Rathkeale College. “I see a lot of commonalities between the Hawke’s Bay and the Wairarapa. Both regions have the same great vibe and feel. My wife and I are really enjoying being a part of this new community”. Martin also plans to increase Rathkeale’s connections into the community saying it is a resource he wants to be available to the entire region. Living on site, Martin is getting to know the 330 students at Rathkeale - 175 of which also live onsite in the boarding houses including 27 international students.

A freshly-baked perspective on a flour-ishing business

Phil Holden Breadcraft

P

hil Holden is the relatively new CEO of one of Wairarapa’s biggest businesses – Breadcraft. While it has been a steep learning curve for Phil to enter a new industry and environment, he is relishing the opportunity to take the well-established business and help it to continue to grow and expand. “It has definitely been a new and exciting experience coming into a family-owned business that has been operating – and operating really well – for a long time,” says Phil. “I’m loving it.” Breadcraft is currently owned by two families and the business has been family-run since it was established in 1942, some 76 years ago. Phil is the first person outside the family to run the organisation and was brought in specifically because he offers a fresh perspective from outside the industry. “The two families have an incredibly symbiotic working relationship,” says Phil.

when they purchased their first automated machine that churned out 800 loaves per hour. Now, however, the technology is so advanced that around 150,000 units a week are baked, which includes loaves of bread, tortillas, paninis, bagels and other bakery products, all created here in Wairarapa.

But while Phil might be new to the industry, he’s certainly not new to management. He has previously held CEO roles at Greyhound Racing New Zealand, New Zealand Rugby League, The Lion Foundation and Coffee Connection. These and other various roles have primarily centred around strategy and change management. “For me, management is all about the people, the culture, and strategy”, says Phil. His plan is to leverage the best elements of the strong, traditional, family-led business and add more robust corporate structure and disciplines, to take the business to the next level. “The key is balancing the family values and more corporate structure to create a platform to evolve the business.” Phil was very much drawn to Breadcraft for the traditional family and community values that Breadcraft hold dear. “I love what Breadcraft stands for. It’s traditional, yet forward-thinking. It operates nationally, yet is a very special part of the Wairarapa community,” says Phil. “From my window every day I see trays of bread being picked up by local community groups. I don’t think there’s been a fundraising sausage sizzle in Wairarapa that we haven’t supported.” Phil goes on to say that Breadcraft’s commitment to the community goes beyond the usual “words and platitudes” companies often use to tick a box that says they are involved in the community. Beyond donating bread to good causes, Breadcraft also sponsor the Kids Triathlon Series, which is a special event as it touches a lot of families within the region.

“This organisation is also one that is truly committed to its 120 staff,” says Phil. “Of course many organisations recognise staff performance with an ‘employee of the month award’. But Breadcraft take it that step further and the Employee of the Month award is published in the Wairarapa Midweek each month. That’s really quite cool.” Like many Wairarapa businesses, Breadcraft maintains a very strong local presence while maintaining a truly national business. “Considering the size of our business, we really do have a significant national – and even international – footprint, but we still feel very much like a local business,” says Phil. Many Wairarapa residents might not realise just how many of their bread ranges available in the supermarket are made right here in Wairarapa. Breadcraft produce household brands –

Nature’s Fresh, Molenberg, Rivermill, Sunny Crust and artisan bread brand Cottage Lane – and all are all made onsite at the Wairarapa plant. But their products can also be found in national fast food franchises and various outlets and even internationally. Even though Phil has only been in his role for around six months, he already has some clear ideas for opportunities and the future direction of Breadcraft. “Sustainability is so crucial to everything we do now, and will be doing in the future. I can see that this will be an area of growth for us moving forward along with capitalising on new trends in health such as incorporating even more nutrition and protein-based foods, adapting our range to cater to particular dietary requirements and expanding our product range,” he says. It was high excitement for Breadcraft in 1962

Nutritious and Delicious

BUY FROM THE BLUE CRATES

Over time, Phil can also see the global footprint of Breadcraft increasing. “Particularly with our popular artisan brand, Cottage Lane, the opportunities to expand here in New Zealand and further afield are looking fantastic,” he says. Phil describes how Breadcraft will be continuing along a path from being a baker to becoming a food manufacturer and from being production-led to consumer-led. “We’ll be looking to expand product lines and categories. It’s an exciting time for us.” Breadcraft already has a strong sustainability philosophy and Phil recognises that this will be a crucial part of Breadcraft’s growth. “Apart from the fact that it is just good business to be sustainable in all senses of the word, it’s very much part of the ethos here at Breadcraft,” says Phil. Phil is enjoying being closer to home and avoiding the commute to Wellington every day. “It’s fantastic, I get to pick my girls up from school a couple of times a week and I balance that out with work from home,” he says. Phil wasn’t looking for a new position when Breadcraft sought him out. “They were persistent,” he says. “It got harder to say no and I’m very glad I said yes. I’m loving it.” “There’s a lot to look forward to,” says Phil.

hantanu has a very personal reason for deciding to join audiology. While his wife had been working in audiology for the last 28 years, it was watching the impact that hearing loss had on Minoti’s father, that meant Shantanu decided to leave his successful architecture career and train as an audiologist 10 years ago. Seeing the consequent positive changes once Minoti’s father was fitted with the right hearing aids for him, and the huge difference they made in his everyday life, inspired Shantanu to have a complete career change and join audiology. “I always knew that the work Minoti was doing was very important and personally rewarding,” says Shantanu. “But it was when it deeply affected us both, watching the impact hearing loss was having on Minoti’s father, that I decided to make the change”. Oracle Hearing has been operating in Carterton for 15 years, and Minoti and Shantanu have owned and managed it together for the past three years. They also have a successful clinic in Upper Hutt. “It means we get the best of both worlds,” says Shantanu. “We love being such an important part of both communities”. While architecture and audiology might not seem an obvious career switch, Shantanu says that the listening skills required to translate what the client really wants and needs are still key. “It’s all about really listening to the client, helping find the right product for them and tweaking it until it is just right,” he says. “At the end of the day it is all about making a big difference in our clients’ lives”. Being able to help people with hearing loss, certainly makes a big difference. “The impact of hearing loss might seem subtle to the people around the person affected – but it’s all the little things that are really the big things,” says Shantanu. “It’s missing the question but not wanting to admit it, so

It’s not just the elderly that are affected by hearing loss these days says Shantanu, “It can hit people much earlier than they might expect. We have such a wide range of products available now. Hearing aids can be very discreet and can be chosen to suit the shape of the client’s ear. Technology is constantly advancing, including the use of connecting to wireless devices, such as your phone or TV”. Shantanu does admit he sometimes misses the creative aspect of his architecture work. So to ‘fix’ that problem, he’s written a novel. He also does archery and art in his ‘spare’ time. But he certainly never regrets his decision to move into audiology, saying, “Who wouldn’t want to help a grandfather hear his grandson tell a story about the funny thing that happened at school, or make sure people can have productive careers as late into their working life as they would like. I love it”.

A brief history of Bryan’s Furniture Bryan Stott ryan Stott credits a well-meaning employer with giving him the break that led to where he is today. Bryan grew up in Christchurch and by the end of school still didn’t know what he wanted to do. “All I knew was that I was interested in sport. I was given a break early on in life to work in a furniture shop in Christchurch. Eventually I made my way up to become the sales manager.”

Bryan’s Furniture has been expanding ever since and three years ago moved to its present location at 132 Lincoln Road, Masterton, giving it 24,000 square feet for display and storage with plenty of easy car parking.

“The true assets of the business are three great women - Glenda and Jane who have been with us for 16 years, and Ange for over 10 years. They take great pride in listening to our customers and matching them up with the best solution for them. They know the products to the nth degree but still enjoy being tested with those challenging questions.” “We also keep as much control as possible of the supply chain from the order right through to the delivery, for quality piece-of-

Principal Hadlow Preparatory School

Andrew’s first impressions have been exceeded, describing the school as “fantastic”. Andrew says it is the people stand out to him and make this school so special. “The students, the staff, the families . . . they have all been so welcoming and make me really look forward to my role here,” he says.

Today Bryan and wife Rachael own Wairarapa’s biggest specialist furniture retail store in Masterton. The couple opened Bryan’s Furniture 16 years ago, after moving to the Wairarapa where Rachael had grown up.

Beds-Beds-Beds is Bryan’s latest addition which gives the ability to cherry-pick the best beds from recognised bedding suppliers including, Sealy, Beautyrest, Sleepmaker & SleepSystems. Despite the size of the store, Bryan’s Furniture has never lost its small town atmosphere and service. This is in large part due to staff who work there, says Bryan who describes himself as “just the figurehead.”

Andrew Osmond

hen I speak to Andrew Osmond, the new Principal at Hadlow Preparatory School, it is just the beginning of his third week in the new role. He has started with big goals in mind. In particular he wants to know every one of his 200 students by name by the end of the week. Next, he’ll move on to their parents’ names. “That’s one of the many things I love about working within a small school,” says Andrew. “We get to know all our students and their families really well.”

mind shopping.” Bryan’s Furniture is a member of New Zealand’s largest independent buying group, and Bryan personally chooses some unique products at international trade shows. “One of the advantages of being a locally owned business is that we can offer more selection than big chains, while being part of the different groups gives us excellent prices to pass on to our customers, and being independent allows us to select products suited to the Wairarapa.”

15

Andrew has previously worked in a variety of private schools and state schools in both New Zealand and England. “I believe children thrive in the environment where schools have a ‘special character’,” says Andrew. “The history and tradition of today’s special character schools – particularly Hadlow – is incredibly important to us. At the same time we embrace a future-focused education.” Hadlow is a state integrated school, so he has the “best of both worlds”. Andrew is particularly passionate about equipping his students with soft skills that make a well-rounded student beyond the basics of writing, reading and maths. “Those skills are certainly essential, but these days we need to teach our children so much more to cope in a changing world,” he says. “Collaboration, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, flexibility and

resilience – are all crucial and keep a student engaged and empowered in their learning. I aim to have happy students who are curious and creative, find something to be passionate about and love coming to school.”

I know Hadlow well enough to know I have a great base to build on . . . In fact Andrew is off to do a presentation soon on his views and what he has learnt about how to educate in a world where the rate of change is increasing so dramatically. Andrew focuses on two key things – kindness and a growth mindset. A growth mindset is a key word in education today. It is the concept (among other things) of understanding that mistakes are important to learn and accepting that learning is hard, but important. Andrew emphasises that a growth mindset is important across all environments, not just school, such as at home and later in the workplace. At the moment Andrew is primarily focused on asking lots of questions and getting to know his school well. He has visited Hadlow several times in the past but is loving coming to grips with his new role. “I know Hadlow well enough to know I have a great base to build on. I love the history and its values and tradition – what it stands for. I’m thrilled to be a part of the Hadlow tradition,” he says. Andrew and his family are loving being part of the wider Wairarapa community and enjoying all the outdoor activities available to them.

Bryan’s Furniture also promotes their Best Price Guarantee, giving shoppers peace of mind. Bryan and Rachael are also pleased to have in the same complex The Shape Shop Fitness and Nutrition run by Lynda and Stephen Oldfield who focus on women’s fitness and health. Completing the mix is Lisa Bull who caters for her clients at the popular Bella Dame Hair Studio.

Choose Hadlow and give your child the best start in education and life. Our wonderfully skilled teachers, state-of-the-art facilities and innovative curriculum are geared to help your child succeed.

Flagship New Digital Printer Peter Watson Printcraft

19

Synergy in Action Steve Sale

S

uffice to say, Pete is very, very excited about his new digital printer – Konica Minolta’s flagship digital printer…the C6100. Pete has been researching and shopping around the world for the best new digital printer, and he’s found it. “It’s the most exciting thing that has happened for Printcraft over the last year or so,” says Pete. “It’s quite literally changing the way we print here at Printcraft”. The flash new printer looks relatively innocent, sitting in the Printcraft office. Compared with the giant, loud, printing press out the back, the new printer looks unassuming. It almost looks like an oversized photocopier. However, this is definitely a case of not judging a book by its cover because the things it can do are quite simply, amazing. “It used to be that the digital printing quality was not as high as our standard printing press. But now the quality is definitely comparable. “ The digital printer can also handle projects that used to have to be done on the printing press. The printing press is significantly more expensive for smaller quantity work than the digital printer. So if the job can be done on the digital printer, it can be done at a much better price than previously. The new digital printer is pretty ‘whiz bang’. Traditionally, Pete or one of his team would have to manually check the colour consistency throughout the printing process. The new digital printer does this all by itself – and automatically adjusts the colour settings so the first, middle and last items printed, are all perfectly matched for colour. The printing process is a very heat intensive method, so paper can often shrink. But that means nothing to the C6100, which

comes with its own humidifier to avoid the shrinkage. The new printer can also produce larger sheet sizes, extra long banner size lengths and print directly on to envelopes. The printer prints 100 pages per minute – compared with the previous printer (which printed 80 per minute) - that adds up over a day. But more importantly the new printer is more intuitive and requires less intervention from Pete and his team, which is a huge time-saver. More importantly though, it is the quality that Pete is clearly impressed with. “The quality of the printing and the range of things we can now do at a reasonable price are just incredible. The quality is superb. I’m really proud of what we can produce off it,” says Pete. Printcraft was the first commercial printer in New Zealand to install this new printer, just a month behind the likes of Japan and America. Pete enjoys being at the forefront of technology and enjoys the process of thoroughly researching potential new products. “I like asking the tough questions and making sure I know exactly what we are getting. It’s a big investment – I want to know it’s going to work for us and help us do what our clients need it to do,” he says. Printcraft is another local business that has a strong national footprint. “We print over one million flyers a month for one national organisation and do all the flyers and pamphlets for several other large nationwide organisations,” says Pete. He adds that they don’t need to advertise as word of mouth does the work for them. “As our clients move between different organisations they see the quality and service their new company is getting and basically tell their boss ‘hey, you really need to talk to Printcraft’. It’s great – our clients feel part of the family.”

Insurance and Mortgage Link

I

f you need help with a mortgage and insurance, Steve Sale of Steve Sale Insurance and Charles Spilhaus of Mortgage Link, are the people you need. Eleven years ago, Steve made the decision to go out on his own and he has enjoyed the freedom of making his own decisions ever since. “In the insurance industry, your reputation is absolutely key,” says Steve. “It is great to be out on my own, knowing I provide an excellent and dependable service”. The two services work well together as a one-stop shop. “It’s enjoyable helping people at crucial points in someone’s life,” says Steve. “We help people buy their house, and then make sure they protect their asset too”. Steve has been in insurance straight from school when he first started learning the ropes working for one of the large national insurers. So to say that he is an expert in his field is an understatement. Equally, Charles, who looks after mortgages on the Mortgage Link side of the business, has over 40 years in bank lending and accounting. The two work very well together and have a very complementary skillset. “Charles comes from a bank lending perspective and is very good in that regard. I happen to be very successful when it comes to non-bank and second-tier lenders,” says Steve. Steve chose Charles from a selection of candidates based on their similar values. “Charles is very respected in his field and came with a wealth of experience. But possibly most importantly, we hold very similar values,” he says. “We both believe in putting our clients needs first and foremost. Together we brainstorm the best solutions and between us we have an excellent network to ‘make things happen’ for our clients”.

Steve emphasises that clients do not have to pay for their services. “We are able to work out for you in advance what you can spend on a property and in many cases we can arrange pre-approvals. We are also available to help with re-finances, loan top-ups, restructures and debt consolidations”. “A little-known fact is that we can arrange the best available rates for re-fixing your fixed rate loans as they become due for review. While you may not have the knowledge and experience to arrange the best rates, we are in a good position to do this through our direct channels with all lenders. We do this all the time, and without cost to you”. We are able to assist with all types of insurance (such as house, contents, vehicle, boat and travel cover) as well as life, trauma, income protection and health. We also have a channel for business insurance. Both Steve and Charles are authorised financial advisers which means that they are available to advise more widely than on banking and insurance products alone. For example, Kiwisaver is a big part of their business. “We enjoy ensuring clients are optimising Kiwisaver. We can also advise across the lending spectrum from basic home lending to more complex lending,” says Steve. “We pool our experience and apply quality time to build relationships with our clients. We are almost always available to take (and return) calls and can often meet with clients at short notice.” The businesses are based in the lovely iconic Public Trust building which has easy access parking for clients. In the office, Steve’s wife, Tania, and Hayley are a great support team.

Tiling his way to success Tavita Isaac Inspire Tile + Stone

T

avita Isaac started Isaac Tile Design from scratch, eight years ago. “It was the natural next step for me,” he says. “I knew I needed to do it so we could achieve goals we had set personally, financially and as a family”. So as soon as he qualified in the trade, he set out to forge his own path, with his own business. Two years ago the business was re branded as Inspire Tile + Stone. Tavita originally started out in hospitality, and has found his service skills have helped him out enormously when it comes to building good client relationships. “One of the key things about me and the team is that we go out of our way to make sure our clients are happy. I’m a ‘people person’, which helps. We keep our clients up to date and they really trust us to do our jobs – which is great,” says Tavita. The business has five full time staff including himself and wife, Jess, who does administration work for the business, as well as sub-contractors they bring on as needed. “There’s a real feel-good factor when you’re employing people and helping them achieve their goals too,” says Tavita. “We’ve got a great group of energetic guys working for us. It’s a real team-family vibe”. Inspire Tile + Stone has a strong reputation for very good service and exceptional quality. In fact around 90% of the work comes from repeat business and referrals. “For us it’s about doing a quality job and offering great service – that’s the focus. Not how fast we can

do a job and get on to the next,” says Tavita. A well known local, Tavita also loves being able to give back to his community. Inspire Tile+Stone sponsor the Greytown Junior Rugby, Kia Kaha Hockey and Featherston Wrestling Club. “It’s fantastic to be in a position to be able to give back,” says Tavita. “I feel very lucky we can help people and groups that do so much for our kids and our community”. Increasingly Tavita is finding his design talents are also called on to help with things like selection and layout. “The earlier on in the process I can get involved, the better,” he says. “I prefer more of a hands on process when it comes to the initial design. I can help people make choices that will work for them and give ideas to help maximise space and functionality. I know what will look good and work well”. Tavita and the Inspire Tile+Stone team have great relationships with the local trade and suppliers here in the Wairarapa and in Wellington, which is also beneficial to his clients. The business allows Tavita increased flexibility when it comes to his family. “Having three kids aged 2 – 10 means we have a pretty busy home life too. But it’s great that the business gives both Jess and I the opportunity to look after our family, support our team, and give back to the community,” says Tavita. “It’s a great work - life balance”.

NZC is a full service wealth management and investment banking firm (although not a registered bank itself ). It has offices around New Zealand and a formal strategic alliance with Credit Suisse which has lasted the test of time over the past 20 years. The alliance means that FNZC’s clients have access, through FNZC, to an incredible amount of information such as global research and industry information. FNZC won the 2018 Institute of Finance Professionals Sharebroker of the year , the fourth year in a row , and has held the award nine times in the last eleven years. The company was also excited to announce its recent strategic advisor appointment – previous Prime Minister, Sir Bill English. In the Wellington office, a small team of committed people are dedicated to looking after clients in the Wairarapa. That team of wealth management advisors include Bryan Shepherd, Angus Marks and Simon Hogg. Bryan and Simon have known each other for over six years and the team work very well together, maximising their complementary knowledge to the benefit of their clients. While their office base is in Wellington, Bryan and the rest of the team are regularly in the Wairarapa and have other local connections which keep them connected to the region. “We like to visit our clients at their place of business, to keep that personal touch,” says Bryan. “It also gives us access to the broader team of about 30 in the Wellington office as further support”. Everyone at FNZC works in teams of two or three to ensure that there is a strong knowledge of portfolios across more than just one person, which makes the most of different skillsets and maximises economies of scale. Essentially, as wealth management advisors, Bryan, Angus and Simon, help their clients invest and then manage, their money. “We really get to know our clients well over several meetings,” says Bryan. “We want to know their long-term goals, dreams and aspirations, as well as their risk-tolerance and stage of life”. Bryan says the investment industry is “exciting, ever-changing and dynamic” and is something he has always been interested in. “It’s quite a skill that you build up over years and years – watching the markets and interpreting what’s happening”. He remembers being interested as a child, watching his father invest via a ‘share club’. Reputation is critical in a wealth management firm and Bryan says his team pride themselves on being “careful, skilled and diligent” as well as keeping their clients well informed on their investments. Bryan, and the rest of the team, enjoy working with a wide range of clients

from charities through to commercial organisations and from individuals that ‘really know their stuff’, such as accountants, lawyers, through to novices that he can teach along the way. “I love watching people new to investing get excited as they come to grips with it and watch their nest egg grow over time,” he says. Bryan Shepherd Bryan is a senior advsor and director at FNZC with over 27 years’ experience in financial markets. He has built up a large client base over the last 15 years working in the region, which he visits regularly – usually at least weekly. As well as visiting for business reasons, Bryan has a bach at Castlepoint where he “enjoys spending weekends biking, swimming, surfing, fishing and relaxing”. He also remembers when he spent holidays at Castlepoint as a young boy. “I love the weather, roads/off-road facilities in the Wairarapa and always look forward to biking in the region,” he says. While Bryan provides all financial services at FNZC he has built up a solid reputation for assisting his clients to sell their farms or businesses and has many long term individual, charity, Estate and Trust clients. He is valued for his sound knowledge of the direct New Zealand/Australian, Global Equity Stocks and New Zealand Bonds. Bryan’s personal approach is very prudent and pragmatic. “I take a lot of notes when I’m with my clients and have become a very good listener,” he says.

You may well meet Bryan while attending local Chamber of Commerce events as he’s a committed member. He’s also very community-minded, for example, serving on various community and sporting boards. Angus Marks Angus is also a senior advisor and director at FNZC. He spent his entire working life in an office, in a big city but he has always had a hankering for the country. Having studied finance at Victoria University in Wellington, Angus started his career in the financial services sector in London while on his ‘OE’, with Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB). He returned to Wellington and again worked with CSFB, which later became First NZ Capital. Angus subsequently returned to the UK and settled in Edinburgh with his new Scottish wife. It was in Edinburgh that Angus first worked as an adviser in a wealth management team, and where his connection with the countryside was deepened while spending weekends working on his ‘in-laws’ farm, helping with the cattle and driving tractors. Angus and his young family returned to First NZ Capital, Wellington, in 2004. Angus has extended family in the Wairarapa and enjoys visiting. He thoroughly enjoys working for FNZC, saying “I have only worked for one professional firm in New Zealand and would choose no other. FNZC has been the leading provider of investment advice and portfolio management in NZ for more than 50 years. I have been connected to the firm for 24

years but I am far from the longest serving staff member - a good reflection of what a great place FNZC is to work”. Angus and his business partner, Andrew Austin, specialise in Discretionary Investment Management Services (DIMS). Angus travels to the Wairarapa regularly to see clients and also for pleasure where he can be found hunting and tramping in the ranges with friends and family. Simon Hogg Simon originally grew up and went to school in Masterton and still has family here in the region, so is a regular visitor. He has 17 years financial services industry experience, including working in London during the Global Financial Crisis. He returned to settle in New Zealand in 2011 and became an ‘AFA’ (Authorised Financial Adviser). “I really value the trust that my clients have in me, looking after their investment – usually their nest egg,” says Simon. “Our relationships are for the long haul and I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing clients achieve their investment goals over a period of time”. Simon strongly believes in giving back to his community, including being on the local school Board of Trustees, and plays squash (and is part of the squash management committee). Apart from having strong family ties to the region he is passionate about “all things aviation” and says he’ll be first in line at next year’s Wings Over Wairarapa.

FNZC introduces Angus Marks, Bryan Shepherd & Simon Hogg as Wealth Management Advisers. Angus, Bryan & Simon supported by Angela Harris add to our team of highly respected and trusted advisers based in Wellington. Together they will offer clients their years of experience combined with FNZC’s market leading research and portfolio reporting platforms.

and this is a fun place to work. It’s a great vibe”.

Originally starting at Hell Pizza when he was just 18, William took a break from pizza to pursue a telecommunications apprenticeship before returning to Hell Pizza with a view to eventually buy the business.

For the majority of staff, this job is their first job. “Most of the team go to Wairarapa College and this is their first real job,” says William. “What I love is that, at school, they wouldn’t necessarily even hang out together. But here at Hell Pizza, we have this great sense of camaraderie and fun”.

illiam Keedwell has only been at the helm of his own business for a couple of months, but he’s certainly not new to hard work, or pizza.

“The circumstances were right to buy the business and it’s been a really exciting new challenge for me since my return,” says William. But what William is most chuffed with is his new team. “This is a great team I have working with me,” he says. “We’re all young

Leading a fresh-faced team and running his own business at the ripe old age of 25 has been a steep learning curve for William. “I don’t really think of myself as a leader. I like to do my best to create the environment for my team to do well and enjoy themselves. And hopefully the rest happens – which so

William has also been lucky enough to have some wonderful support from friends. In particular, Crystal Hill, and her husband, have played a mentor role to William. “I think Crystal and her husband will be my friends for life. Crystal has gone out of her way to provide me with solid advice and has even helped with training up my new staff,” says William. William is enjoying having the freedom, as the new owner, to make the changes he feels are necessary to continue to consistently improve the service and product at Hell Pizza. “As manager I had influence over how and what was done. But as the owner, I can actually make it happen the way I want it to,” he says. “In particular I’m really focusing on improving the quality and our customer

William is thrilled to be part of the wider Hell Pizza franchise system and believes it will be an excellent opportunity for him to do well in business. But it really is his team he is most proud of.

“I’m proud of every single staff member. They’re all keen to learn and do better,” he says. “A couple of them are already being trained up for management”. William has already recognised their progress with payrises and bonuses for achieving important things like learning the pizza menu by heart. “Initially I had been a bit worried about having such a young team, but what I have seen is a really committed and hard working team. They are really great”.

Setting the Diamond-standard Shayne Williams and Trevor Howard Webstar

N

inety percent of the people driving past Webstar probably have no clue what goes on in the giant warehouse on Ngaumutawa Road. But Webstar is one of Masterton’s largest employers – and businesses – in the Wairarapa.

Since winning New Zealand’s single largest printing contract, Webstar set up a magazinecentric state-of-the-art facility in Auckland to cater to their Auckland-based client. This second facility allows some further flexibility in terms of speed and print options available.

Webstar is a 7-day a week, 24 hour a day, operation, with 100 staff literally pumping out millions of pamphlets, leaflets, directories and publications for the rest of New Zealand.

Webstar’s clients range from well-known magazines through to mailers from many of New Zealand’s most well known retail brands. Most of Webstar’s work is for large national clients, but it has recently picked up the contract to print your local newspaper – the Wairarapa Times-Age. It also does the New Zealand- based printing for many large Australian businesses, such as Harvey Norman, helping them reduce shipping costs, time, and the associated carbon footprint.

“We have an incredibly loyal and dedicated workforce here at Webstar,” says Trevor Howard. “Most people stay with us once they start working for us. For example, our longest serving staff member, Kevin Hunter, has been with us 51 years”. Trevor refers to his “League of Nations” staff who include many foreigners who have made the move to the Wairarapa in New Zealand and found their home here. “We have a wonderful array of cultures and people here. From England and Australia, right through to the Czech Republic, South Africa, and Zimbabwe,” he says. Those 10% of people driving past Webstar who do know what it is, may well have been through on one of the tours they do for various organisations such as local schools or Lions’ Clubs. The machinery involved is impressive. Masterton was strategically chosen for its central location and access to transport when the original Government Print was first established here back in the 1970s. Webstar prints the TV Guide in time to be overnighted out to everyone in time to plan their TV viewing for the week. “We can get product transported overnight into Auckland or Christchurch – we are perfectly positioned for speed of transport,” says Shayne Williams.

“We love to work locally as much as possible, of course, and to help our local economy thrive,” says Shayne. “So we are thrilled that very soon we’ll be printing the local newspaper – you can’t get much more local than that”. Given the large volume of printing and paper going through Webstar’s doors every day, you’d be forgiven for worrying about the environment, momentarily. Webstar has 60 containers coming in and out of its factory doors every month and some of its clients do runs of 1.4 million! But, in fact, Webstar has achieved the highest possible Enviromark rating - ‘Diamond approved’, Enviromark is NZs leading environmental standard. Incredibly, Webstar recycles 98.4% of any waste it produces. “We’re especially proud of our incredible environmental standards and sustainability principles,” says Trevor. “We are the only newspaper printer and the only web printer to achieve the standards required to meet the rigorous requirements to be Diamond approved”.

As New Zealand’s print media specialist, we’ll get your message to the market faster than anyone else. Our product range includes high-volume, high-quality magazines, catalogues, flyers and promotions, direct mail and large format. Webstar’s focus on innovation means we’ve got the flexibility and expertise to cater completely to our clients’ needs. Nothing’s too hard for us.

A tale of two lawyers Nick Newbery and Timoth Matsis Gawith Burridge Laywyers

G

then Auckland. He was involved in the legal aspects of buying and selling companies, corporate structuring, joint ventures and financing. As well as his Master of Law, which he received honours for, he also managed to pick up a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration.

awith Burridge has two new lawyers on their team. The pair couldn’t have taken two more different paths to get there. Both equally interesting and somewhat complicated routes. But both have ended up with exactly what they wanted – working in a lovely semi-rural town in a family-friendly practice. Nick Newbery joined Gawith Burridge early this year but began his working life in the New Zealand police force. His tenure with the police included 10 years fighting crime in South Auckland. Nick moved quickly through the ranks of detective and sergeant. However, with a new family it made sense to move to Wairarapa for a slightly quieter life. Only slightly quieter, however, because initally he was commuting to Lower Hutt for work while studying his law degree through the University of Waikato! In fact, Nick has collected quite a few diplomas and degrees in policing, business and communications among other things. After qualifying in law, Nick became a police prosecutor and as part of his very successful career with the police he helped form the inaugural Child Protection Team in Masterton and was the district’s prosecution manager. With young children of his own, the appeal of a family-friendly law practice where he could build up other aspects of his law career, was strong. “Gawith Burridge was the perfect fit for me,” says Nick. “My time with the police has given me a very grounded understanding of the law. But I’m relishing the opportunity to explore other aspects now, too.” Nick is enjoying the short commute and says “The people here are so great – we have an amazing team with a strong sense of camaraderie.” Timothy Matsis is the latest addition to the Gawith Burridge team. Tim began in tax consulting, and then commercial law, at respected law firms in Wellington, and

Eventually, Tim tired of the ‘big city’ corporate life and opted for a slower pace in Invercargill. “Auckland is hectic. The traffic, the commute, and I missed that feeling you get in a provincial town where you actually know your neighbours,” says Tim. Tim met the woman who would later become his wife on holiday and she lived in Invercargill. “Initially I joined her for what was supposed to be a few months. But somehow we ended up staying down south for 13 years and starting our family there.” Tim took on a role at the Southern Institute of Technology, teaching business law. But, Tim was keen to get back into practising law. “I knew I didn’t want to go back to Auckland. My wife and I wanted to keep the semi-rural lifestyle but we also wanted to be somewhere warmer. Wairarapa was the perfect place to bring up our family,” says Tim. “It’s close to Wellington so we can still get our city fix and it’s got everything we need. I love the scenery here. You almost have to pinch yourself as you look out to the mountains across the farmland and trees,” says Tim, laughing as he adds that in Invercargill the trees are all on an angle from the wind. Tim is also enjoying the team and culture at Gawith Burridge. “The banter is great,” he says. “We all have our different backgrounds, stories and skills that we bring to our respective roles – and together, it all works.” So while these two new lawyers at Gawith Burridge have taken very different paths, they have ended up here for very similar reasons. For them both, it is all about family, people and place.

ce Panel & Paint Wairarapa has been part of Martinborough for 30 years. Over that time it has accrued loyal customers throughout the Wairarapa, impressed by the quality of its work. Owner Kim Lace emigrated to the south Wairarapa town with his parents from England when he was in his teens. After serving his apprenticeship as a spray painter at Athol Ross in Greytown, Kim worked for General Motors in Wellington before starting Ace Panel & Paint in a former aircraft hangar on the road out to Lake Ferry from Martinborough. When that was demolished, Kim moved the business into purpose-built premises tucked away at the end of Nelson Road. Here, Kim has collected around him a team of experienced panel beaters in Neil Tannant, Troy Sharp and Hugh Burton, and spray painters in Brian Harris and Max O’Neale, assisted in the office by Diana Wallace and Dani Stuart. The services they provide include panel beating, automotive refinishing, chassis

and structural repairs, rust and restoration, steering and suspension, grooming, plastic welding and claims assistance. Ace Panel & Paint is an approved repairer for most major insurance companies, as well as helping out with any private work - from rust and restoration to minor car park damage. It has the latest Car-O-Liner 3D measuring equipment and Inverter Spot welder to ensure vehicles are repaired to better than manufacturer’s tolerances and specifications. Plastic welding is a significant part of the business, from repairing quads, motorbikes and car bumpers, to plastic tanks, calf feeding machines and spray tanks for farmers and ag contractors. Ace Panel & Paint’s courtesy car is a popular service, giving customers from throughout the Wairarapa access to a vehicle while theirs is being repaired. While general repairs are Ace Panel & Paint’s bread and butter, the staff enjoy any opportunity to work on classic and vintage motor vehicles such as a recently restored 1920s MG and 1968 Camaro muscle car.

rad is very passionate and enthusiastic about floors. And rightly so, he has access to some amazing materials that can achieve stunning results for both indoors and outdoors. Brad works with retailers and directly with some suppliers – depending on which product fits the client’s needs best. He can completely transform a floor no matter what base he is starting from. “When you’re working with floors you really have to get it right,” says Brad. “It can seem like an easy thing to just ‘pop’ some new flooring down, but really, you have to focus on getting the foundations right first”. Apart from the usual things you expect when it comes to flooring, such as carpet, vinyl, timber floors and paving, Brad has access to some incredible new products that can completely change a floor. “It’s amazing what can be done these days,” says Brad. “For example, we have this fantastic product, called Elitecrete, which is a type of overlay that can be put over top of existing concrete”. “The product can be made to look like pretty much anything you like. For example, wood, stone or tile. It’s resinous and is stronger than concrete so can have industrial and commercial applications. It can even be made to be clear, reflective, or have a fleck through it”. “It works especially well where you have funny or awkward shapes and it sets faster and harder that regular concrete. It’s nonpermeable, durable and flexible. It depends on the kind of finish the client wants, but it is usually a very economical option comparable with other flooring options. It’s even antimicrobial

which means it is perfect anywhere where hygiene is important. In the U.S. it is used in surgeries and chemists, for example,”. “The product has been in America for 25 years but we’ve only recently begun to understand the potential of this new technology here in New Zealand,” he says. Especially keen on renovating older houses, Brad says a new floor can completely change not only the look of a house, but the feel of it too. “These days a lot of allergens can be found in old carpets. Once a new floor is down – for example, a timber floor or vinyl planking which looks like timber – a house can be rid of allergies which makes a huge difference to my clients,” he says. Brad has been working under his own brand for three years now and has taken on an apprentice. “It’s very satisfying. I can teach him my way of doing things – the right way”. Reputation is key to Brad and that is reflected in the great feedback he receives from his clients who are more than happy to use him again and refer him to other people. Another area that has become popular is putting down garage carpet. “People have almost come to expect carpet in a modern house’s garage these days,” says Brad. The best place to check out Brad’s work and get some ideas is on his Facebook page – Fine Fit Flooring. You can also chat to him to get an idea of what can be done at your own home. Brad is looking forward to continuing to grow and build his business and give back to the community and industry.

Dingo Nick does lawns Nick Dench, Marty Dench and Dan Cayless Dingo Nick

T

here is an art and a science to having a beautiful lawn which Nick Dench of Dingo Nick has perfected over many years. Dingo Nick can provide all lawn services from laying them to restoring and maintaining them. But not one to rest on his reputation, in March of this year Nick brought in the extra expertise of Dan Cayless as Dingo Nick’s lawn care specialist.

Dingo Nick has its own Hydroseeding Machine which encases grass seed in a slurry of papier mache, glue, fertiliser and a wetting agent. This protects the seed from birds, wash out and the wind, keeps it moist, and fertilises the seed after it germinates. There is a higher strike rate, faster and much more even growth, and less watering is needed.

Dan is a fully qualified green keeper with over 20 years’ experience.

This is an ideal tool for restoring existing lawns as well as creating new ones.

He served his apprenticeship at Carterton Golf Course where he was runner up New Zealand Apprentice Green Keeper of the Year.

For anyone who can’t wait a month or two for their beautiful new lawn, Dingo Nick can roll out ready-made lawns, say, for example, if you want your newly built home to be perfect on the day you move into it.

Dan then worked as Green Keeper at Masterton Golf Course, cared for Wairarapa College’s grounds, and later maintained all of Masterton’s sports grounds. Reflecting Dingo Nick’s professional attitude towards lawns, the business has accrued a fine array of specialised machinery including bob cat, digger, levelling devices, and mechanical rake to get rid of large stones. Dingo Nick even has its own soil screen which can be towed on to a property to sift existing top soil on-site, instead of importing bugs and weeds in with new top soil.

If you are one of those people who enjoy having your lawn looking perfect all year round, Dan is available for weekly to seasonal visits with a range of services that include mowing, fertilising and spraying. Without good management, a lawn can be destroyed in no time at all, Dan points out “Mowing too short, letting the lawn get away and then cutting it back too hard. “Lawns can die from different diseases and grubs. All of this can be prevented through good management.”

Jordon wrote down the goal of owning his own salon as something he wanted to do “eventually”. But a chance wander past the salon on Upper Plain Road provided him the opportunity to achieve his goal much sooner. “I happened to be walking past the salon which had since closed, but the gear was still there. I made a few enquiries and, just over a year later, here I am. It was one of those serendipitous things,” he says. Already well known as an excellent local hairdresser, Jordon had a strong client base to build on. “I started work experience while I was still at school. Then I was offered an apprenticeship when I finished college which I was eager to take up,” says Jordon. “I started the very next day after I finished school”. Since then Jordon has been excelling in his chosen career and describes his decision to start his own salon as “the logical next step”. “I was ready for the next challenge,” he says. “I love hairdressing – making my clients feel great and learning new techniques and skills. But I was ready for the next step and this opportunity was perfect”. Jordon says he is grateful to everyone who has helped him achieve his goal from his supportive friends and family, wonderful team and his fantastic clients. “I really have been so lucky to have so many people behind me. I really couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help,” he says. Supporting his team is particularly important to Jordon who values ongoing training and development. “We have incredible hairdressers here in the Wairarapa, and I really enjoy being part of that process of upskilling and developing people new to the industry”.

Each team member at Madison Hair Studio has their own training budget they can use to upskill as part of Jordon’s proactive approach to ongoing staff development. “It’s great to see my staff grow and develop and achieve their own goals too,” he says. Jordon has a full time staff member and an apprentice on board who he is currently training. “It’s really important to me to give back to the industry I have loved being part of”. Jordon clearly takes his role as business owner seriously and is coming to grips with the elements of being in business that he hasn’t previously had to be involved in. “Apart from the usual business administration side of things that have been new to me, it’s also been about working out what is important to us, and our clients, as a salon”. “We aim to be as natural as possible and as sustainable as possible. For example, we use ammonia free permanent colours and we don’t use disposable foils for highlights anymore – we use innovative new reusable mesh alternatives,” says Jordon. Madison Hair Studio is building its social media following with helpful and practical information on Instagram and Facebook. Jordon is supported by his wife Stephanie, who also does beauty services in the salon, team member Ashlee, and apprentice Victoria. The salon also has a wedding hair specialist available by appointment. The salon has been completely revamped since Jordon took over just one short year ago. “We love the fresh and modern new look”. “It has been an amazing and exciting year for us and we’re so grateful to everyone for their help and support,” sums up Jordon.

athan Haglund brings a wealth of experience and qualifications to his role as partner and co-owner at AKAA. Originally completing a Bachelor of Business Studies majoring in both economics and finance, Nathan had a well-established career in the banking industry before becoming an accountant. “I enjoyed my time in the banking industry,” says Nathan. “It gave me a thorough understanding and grounding in business and finance.” While at university he also managed to meet his, now wife, Nicola. The pair met at university and have been together ever since. “We actually got married as a bit of a bribe so I could see the All Blacks in Sydney,” quips Nathan. Around 10 years ago Nathan decided it was time to build on his career and his love of numbers and completed the 15 papers required to become a chartered accountant. “It was a natural progression for me,” says Nathan. “I loved working with businesses and seeing them succeed. I realised I could help even more as an accountant.” Originally working for another local accountant, Nathan seized the opportunity to become a partner in a larger firm that had a broader client base. “AKAA has a strong commercial client base which suits my skillset and allows me to continue to develop further personally,” says Nathan. “We have a great team. I really enjoy increasing my knowledge base, collaborating and continually growing.” Nathan notes that AKAA also work with both major accounting systems – MYOB and XERO, which provides more options for clients. Nathan’s business banking background puts him in good stead for the part of his role that includes financing and lending. “I still have strong relationships with the local banks that helps smooth out the process for my

clients,” he says. Adding, “accounting is about so much more than numbers. It’s also about building and maintaining relationships and that’s the part I really enjoy.”

“And no question is a silly question in my office.” Nathan describes his philosophy about supporting business people as one of supporting their ‘big ideas’ with wraparound business strategy support for those who want it. “I love it when my clients share their dreams and goals with me – no matter how big or small they are,” he says. “Some of my clients have said they’ve felt silly in the past for sharing their big ideas with previous accountants but I would never judge someone for thinking big - quite the opposite. Sure, sometimes I have to provide the ‘sanity check’ – but I would never make them feel silly for dreaming big. And no question is a silly question in my office.” Nathan notes that business is not always easy and part of his role is helping people going through financial rough patches out to the other side. Nathan and Nicola lived in Taranaki and Wellington for 10 years before the desire arose to come back to Nathan’s home of Wairarapa to raise their family. Together with their children, age 10, 12, and 15, they love living here. Nathan and Nicola share a passion for motorbikes and go on regular trips with their friends from school days. “It’s the boys’ turn next. We’re off to Hawke’s Bay at the end of the month,” he says. Adding cheekily that the wives are more “fair weather opportunists”. Together, they have circumnavigated New Zealand twice over the years.

hile it’s not entirely correct that the team at Best Blokes Decorating are all blokes, the name really does say it all. “It was a bit of fun,” says Kurt Mende about the name of his business. “It’s not necessarily a ‘bloke’ thing – we have a couple of ladies on the team - but we are definitely a great group of people at the very top of our game”. Best Blokes Decorating is a family-run business and Kurt is proud of how easy he and his team are to deal with. “We really focus on not only doing a great job, but providing that personal touch when it comes to looking after our clients,” says Kurt. Kurt learnt the trade and acquired his exceptionally high standards while working in his brother’s decorating business. “Learning the ropes with my brother was brilliant, but I always knew eventually I would also want to go out on my own. Now we are two of the very best in the business”.

grown to the point where Kurt is about to begin building a purpose-built onsite depot next to his home where he lives with his young family. “It’s going to be fantastic having the workshop right next to us in an effort to create true work-life balance and family time,” he says. “It’ll have all the things we need to do a great job, including the technology to do onsite training with my team, offices, and a verandah to take a break”. It is also important to Kurt that he and his team are environmentally conscious in their work. This is why he decided to become certified as an Eco decorator. This means they use the most environmentally friendly paint possible and use the recommended site safety and disposal methods. “It’s really important to us, and our clients,” says Kurt.

Driven to be the very best, Kurt is not only a registered Master Painter but a registered Eco Decorator as well. “In this industry I think it is incredibly important to have high standards and invest the time, energy and cost it takes to be registered,” says Kurt. “We are very focused on ensuring you get a fantastic job, done right, that is long lasting, and gentle on the environment”.

Best Blokes Decorating has a top-notch reputation working alongside some great building companies in the region.

“With a Master Painter, you know exactly what you are getting – a fully professional job where you have the reassurance that you’ll be satisfied with the job or it will be redone. It’s piece of mind for the client”.

“We’re always upskilling and training in the latest techniques. Basically, we love what we do and working with our clients,” he says.

t almost gets a little boring, as Matt Spicer tells me not much has changed since last year. He’s maintained the top-level status… again…it has a different name now – it’s called “Premier Status”. But essentially it means – yet again - he is amongst the best of the best at Loan Market no matter which way you slice the pie - the number of sales, the dollar value or the revenue from loans settled. In fact in a world where scores of 10 are virtually never given - even on ‘Masterchef’ or ‘The Block’ - Matt is regularly given marks of 10 out of 10 by his clients. His running average is 93. Five out of his six last clients scored him 10 out of 10. The sixth person gave him a 9… I point out the relative craziness of this to Matt. Especially given that the survey is optional – and usually people only fill in optional surveys if they have something to complain about. Matt just chuckles and says, “Yeah, it is definitely pretty great – it’s something I’m proud of that clients enjoyed the broker experience and wouldn’t hesitate to use it again and recommend it to others”. Just some of the recent positive comments from the survey include: “Analyses and gives options to better suit the situation”; “Goes the extra mile to achieve your goal”; “Very patient with first timers” and “Was very helpful, patient and most importantly trustworthy”. Matt says this has been one of his busiest years ever and despite lending restrictions the region is going from strength to strength. “It’s extremely pleasing to see the growth of the region,” he says. “Not only existing properties selling well, but the number of new subdivisions and new houses being built. I have some clients waiting up to 18 months in a queue to have their house built”. Matt’s passion for his industry and helping people into their new homes is evident as he talks about his work, “I love helping

people into their first homes, second homes, retirement homes, dream homes, lifestyle blocks, building their property portfolio, building, reverse equity homes to help people live well in their ‘twilight years’ to get that new car or hip”. People are often surprised – and occasionally dubious – that a Loan Market mortgage advisory service is free. Lenders pay mortgage brokers a fee for bringing them a client. The service is unbiased – Matt matches clients to the most appropriate banking service and ensures the best deal to match their requirements. “I love getting a great deal for my clients and enjoy working with people and making it happen,” says Matt. Matt makes the process as easy and stressfree as possible – including meeting clients at places and times that suit them best. He enjoys the flexibility of owning his own business, which means he can spend more time with family and pursuing hobbies in his occasional spare time. Matt bought the Wairarapa Loan Market franchise four years ago after 13 years as a mortgage broker and advisor, and 10 years in the banking industry. Tania Finlayson supports Matt, keeping his busy diary up to date. His approachable and practical nature means it’s worth having a chat with Matt even if you’re not sure whether or not you can get a mortgage. For first homebuyers it can be useful to have an initial chat to know exactly what you need to do to be ‘mortgage ready’. “I don’t want to see anyone overextend themselves so much they can only afford two minute noodles. But on the other hand, if people know what to do to put themselves in a much better position, that can make all the difference,” says Matt.
