FallProtect
Falling is not an option F
allprotect Ltd started operations in 2015 by owner, Joe Isaac, an Advanced Scaffolder and FASET Certified Safety Net Installer. It is the largest scaffolding enterprise offering commercial and residential quality scaffolding and safety netting in Wairarapa. Joe Isaac is the epitome of a local lad who has had a good crack at it and along the way he’s trying his best to help others too with employment and training. Joe has gathered a strong team around him. Fraser Kingi is operations manager and they have nine men – Raymond Oakly; Blane Weir, Marcus Ale, Joe Roberts, Hoani Haeata, Charvez Kohitulu; Wiremu Haira; Vinny Aspinall and Nathan Rewai-Couch. “Scaffolding is up there as one of the most physically challenging jobs in construction and what these nine young men do on a day-to-day basis is amazing. I have a lot of respect for them.” Six are apprentices learning the trade. Another two will start their apprenticeships in the near future. Fraser Kingi, with extensive experience in his field, has returned from Australia relocating with his wife and five children to Wairarapa. “I was lucky to catch him between jobs. The man is a legend,” says Joe. Daily admin is done by Denise Barnard who has moved from Auckland and is highly experienced in business administration.
Providing competitive wages, salary incentives, a training bonus, staff events and celebrating their professional and personal successes, is paramount to the continued growth of the company.
“Scaffolding is up there as one of the most physically challenging jobs in construction and what these nine young men do on a day-to-day basis is amazing. I have a lot of respect for them.” “FallProtect would not be what it is today without these people working with us,” says Joe. Fallprotect aims to provide scaffold and safety netting to eliminate the risk of workers having work injuries; to cut down construction time for all clients; to provide a professional, honest and certified team of scaffolders and to complete all projects using the best technology, tools and plant. And to deliver all of the above with attention to detail, within the timeline agreed.

McKenzie’s Electrical 2000
Electrical services with a very human element M Keys.
cKenzie’s Electrical 2000 is in very good hands – that of its co-owner Russell
He shares the directorship with wife Carrollyn who runs the admin side of the business with Vicky Gallon. There are also eight electricians on the road, half are fully qualified and half apprentices. It’s all very efficient, high tech and thorough just like you’d expect an electrical business to be. The company is proud of its Site Safe Green Status, the result of long hours and fastidious work by Vicky. Russell sits on the Electrical Works Registration Board – a national body which considers registration and re-licensing of electricians. It also acts as a disciplinary board. It has a strong governance component which sits happily with Russell who also happens to be a Carterton District Councillor, deputy Mayor, and a White Ribbon Ambassador, spreading the word to stop violence against women.
“It’s an absolute no-brainer not to treat people well in employment. They are our biggest asset and should be cared for.” they are not bosses and employees but a team. When a new person is taken on board, they all consider the applications, to ensure they are all content to work together. When it comes time for family, there is tons of flexibility. “It’s an absolute no-brainer not to treat
people well in employment. They are our biggest asset and should be cared for,” stresses Russell. According to the official New Zealand survey of Working Life 2018, more than half of jobs in the country had flexible working hours. The survey found workers with flexible hours reported higher levels of satisfaction, were notably more engaged and enthusiastic at work. And, if that’s not all, Russell is a volunteer firefighter in the Carterton brigade with 22 years’ service and current rank of Station officer. McKenzie’s Electrical – a company with a whole lot of heart as well as skill and experience.
A proud Cartertonian who has lived all his life in the town, Russell loves his community role as much as his professional work. He’s passionate about many things, not least the training of young people into the trades. When in 2016, it took him nine months to fill a vacancy, he decided to always have apprentices on board in his business – hence the four in training now. Then there’s the staff relations component. All his employees are paid above the Living Wage and he and Carrollyn are vehement

The connecting force behind big ideas
J
arden’s August 2019 overview of the financial climate sets out some of the challenges facing our markets: “Interest rates have dived to extremely low depths as economic growth indicators turned down due to trade concerns and tensions between Iran and the US and its allies. “Globally, central banks have reacted to this by taking a more simulative stance, including the lowering of interest rates.” In climates like this, it’s more important than ever to carefully consider your assets and investments, advises Jarden Director and Wealth Management Adviser, Bryan Shepherd. He is part of a financial advisory team at Jarden, New Zealand’s leading and investment advisory group. Bryan’s focus is to service his Wairarapa clients. Jarden was formerly known as FNZC; Bryan says they are all proud to return to the name of founder Ron Jarden and to continue the 60 years of respected investment and advisory service. He also loves that the company is 100 per cent New Zealand owned. “Ron was an investment visionary ahead of his time. “Jarden is determined to continue that vision helping New Zealanders, individuals, farmers, charities, family trusts, entrepreneurs and Iwi groups with financial advice.” Bryan and colleague Simon Hogg dedicate themselves to Wairarapa clients by visiting regularly from their Wellington office and enjoy the face-to-face personal service. They are both personally linked to the Wairarapa region - Bryan likes to escape to his bach at Castlepoint and Simon was born and raised in Masterton. “Jarden offers intellectual grunt in a market which dives and turns with great volatility. “People are busy and it takes a practised eye to monitor such movement. “We keep a close watch on the markets and can assure clients we will give them value for their invested dollar,” says Bryan. Jarden has invested across the capital markets to build itself as New Zealand’s leading investment and advisory group. There are offices in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Cambridge, Queenstown, Havelock North and Nelson. New investment offerings have been introduced too, including opportunities to invest in private real estate through Pearlfisher, and in emerging private companies, through Principal Investments.

F
or franchise owner and mortgage adviser of Loan Market Wairarapa, Matt Spicer, the accolade from Australian colleague Sam White for being named a Premier Performer is high praise indeed. Premier Performer means reaching the highest target levels in loan settlements and he’s achieved accolades in the past four years. “Reaching Premier Performer status for 2018-19 is an exceptional achievement. In arguably one of the most challenging years the industry has seen, your drive and determination has seen you take a leading position in our Group, and the industry,” said Sam White, Executive Director, Sydney. Matt joined the Australasian Loan Market franchise five years ago after working in mortgage advising for over 18. He describes the past few years in the industry as “hideous, frantic, exciting” all in one, as people discover Wairarapa. “The hidden gem of Wairarapa is not hidden anymore.” Matt says the explosion of subdivisions, new-builds, re-builds and people moving here from many parts, including overseas, has meant his job just got busier. He is joined in the Perry Street office in Masterton by Nikki Cox who recently became New Zealand accredited as a financial adviser after many years of similar work in the UK. Tania Finlayson completes their team as their PA.
The majority of their work in recent times has been first home buyers but there’s also a demand from families needing larger houses, doing renovations, right through to reverseequity mortgages. Matt is quick to explain while their first intent is to seal the loan for people, the company continues the contact with customers ensuring their lending is working best for them over the years. “We’re proud of the rapport we build with people. Helping them with ongoing financial advice is very rewarding,” Matt is a proud born and bred Carterton person who attended Kuranui College and studied business administration at Wairarapa Polytechnic. Starting in the home loan business at Trust Bank which morphed into Westpac, Matt went on to work for Wairarapa Home Loans and when the Loan Market approached him to become their Wairarapa representative, he grabbed the chance. While the high praise and ongoing achievements are being piled on Matt, he says the biggest thrill is seeing clients get their loan. “Every deal is different and we have a huge range of lenders on our books. If one lender is not willing, we can go elsewhere and maybe re-structure down the track.” Congratulations on your outstanding achievement Matt!
T
he ownership of one of Wairarapa’s leading printing firms, Printcraft ‘81 Ltd, has moved to Peter Watson. After 50 years in the printing game, Lance Johnson is taking a step back to let Peter and wife Sheryl, lead the firm. They officially took over 1st September 2019. There’s a slight name change to ‘Printcraft + Design Hive’ and a there’s a concentrated effort to encourage customers to be as sustainable as possible, moving away from plastic, for the sake of the environment. Printcraft has always been extremely environmentally conscious and now it’s notching it up another level with a concentrated ‘Fight on Plastic’ campaign providing people with alternative options for printing and packaging. “Printcraft has used vegetable ink for many years and used only products from sustainable sources but we are now trying to replace plastic packaging with compostable cardboard and paper where possible,” says Peter. “Sure there may be a slight increase in price initially but if we all insist on using these products, costs will reduce to meet the market and global trends. If we pair sharp design with sustainable packaging you can actually improve sales and value.” Gone are the nasty chemicals too which used to plague the printing industry – from ink to the developers and emulsifiers in photography, Now with technology, emulsions are water soluble and we are

Printcraft was the first in Wairarapa to use this direct technology. Peter Watson began his printing apprenticeship in 1984 at Government Print when it was based in Masterton. He worked in Wellington for many years but when he and Sheryl had three children and he had the chance to move to Printcraft in 1999, he joined Lance Johnson as a designer and production manager. Peter is excited to be carrying on such an esteemed Wairarapa company whose origins go back to 1932 in a building which operated as a printers and now houses ‘Fish’ fish and chip shop on Queen Street south. In 1987, Lance Johnson and Paul Sneyd took over Austin and Warby Print in Chapel Street and they worked out of the Queen Street premises until 1989 when former Vic’s Garage was obtained. The large corner site with plenty of parking has been highly successful for Printcraft as have the valued and experienced staff.

Wairarapa Mitsubishi
Motoring To The Top W
airarapa Mitsubishi has just celebrated its fourth birthday - and topping the region’s sales figures has been the perfect present for owner and dealer principal Brent Cooper.
The 2019 ute comes with an efficient 2.4L diesel engine, 135kW of power and 437Nm of torque - an ideal choice for farmers, tradespeople carting heavy loads, and offroad drivers.
Brent took over the Masterton-based business, formerly known as McKenzie Motors, in 2015 - and has barely slowed down since, overseeing a busy schedule of vehicles sales, parts replacements, and groomings, and a steady flow of customers from all walks of life.
“The growth [in sales] has been phenomenal.
This year, thanks to Brent’s knowledgeable staff and top-notch product line, Mitsubishi has been named as the highest selling brand in Wairarapa - and its Triton Ute, Wairarapa Mitsubishi’s most sought-after model, emerging as the highest selling utility vehicle. Not a bad effort for Brent, who started with little to no experience in car sales. “I worked as I diesel mechanic - I’d drive up to my garage in Eketahuna every day for 10 years,” he says. “When McKenzie Motors came up for sale, Mitsubishi was an up-and-coming brand and the Triton Ute was just coming up on the market - it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. “We pretty much hit the ground running - I learned a lot in a short amount of time. “I’m thrilled with how far we’ve come in four years. We’ve built a good, honest reputation, which brings a lot of repeat business.” Wairarapa Mitsubishi has seven models in stock - but the Triton Ute makes up a large share of its sales.
“We also offer a five-year warranty, and 10 years for the motor and gearbox, which customers love.” As well as a high-value product, Wairarapa Mitsubishi can thank its 17 hardworking staff for its success. “Our sales team are very approachable friendly, well-qualified and have a huge knowledge of our products,” Brent says. “The office staff are always efficient, and know every customer by name. The parts team do a marvellous job keeping us wellstocked, and our groomers and yardsmen keep everything neat and tidy. “We’ve also got a great relationship with Mitsubishi New Zealand.” For Brent and his team, there’s no greater satisfaction than seeing a client - whether it’s their first car or an upgrade to the next model - drive off in a new Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi has, he says, become synonymous with life in New Zealand - and he’s pleased to continue the tradition. “A lot of people have childhood memories of their family owning a Lancer or a Mirage. It’s a very reliable brand - and it’s great to see its forging ahead in the region.”

A foodie’s paradise
Big jobs, big satisfaction
P
aul Broughton’s wide ranging passions are all there, laid bare, when you enter the exquisite gourmet food store, C’est Cheese on Featherston’s Main Street. In here you discover a virtual Aladdin’s Cave of cheese and specialist food. There’s a comprehensive range of cured meats, olive oil, chutneys, relishes, sauces, breads and more. There’s also a nook to sit and savour coffee and a cheesy snack and to watch cheese being made.
A
new location, more challenging jobs, and an expanding clientele have made for an exciting year for Steen McGhie. For the past decade, Steen’s company, Wairarapa Windscreens, has slowly become one of the best-known names in automotive glass repair in the region.
Paul’s love of cheese is dominant with a purpose-built cheese factory now up and running.
Steen, alongside assistant Euan Harris, offers a mobile service - able to repair stone chips and replace windscreens at the client’s regular auto workshop, saving time and petrol costs.
Close behind is the appreciation of gourmet food, which stacks the shelves in C’est Cheese, creative design is obvious and which is all around the store interior – check out the quaintly detailed entrance door. And then there’s heritage. The store is part of the historic Anderson’s building, constructed in 1875. Renovations have revealed original weatherboards with old signage which Paul has carefully retained. Paul describes C’est Cheese as “a hobby which got out of hand.” He’s been in Featherston six years and the business just keeps expanding. Initially it was purely selling artisan cheese, a few extra gourmet food products were added, they extended into the premises next door, added a coffee machine, created a space for people to sit, and the latest addition is the creamery or cheese making factory. This state of the art facility known as ‘Remutaka Pass Creamery’ will focus on producing a range of blue and washed rind cheese using organic milk from the Bargh farms in South Wairarapa. Those who visit the store can watch the process in action through a large glass window.
This is especially convenient, as the client can have their windscreen repaired at the same time as having their vehicle serviced or getting a warrant of fitness.
“Those who visit the store can watch the process in action through a large glass window.” Paul’s brimming with ideas. Using local resources and offering Wairarapa products is what C’est Cheese is all about. There’s products from all over New Zealand but Wairarapa is the dominant source and includes Kingsmeade, Drunken Nanny and Green Larder cheeses. If you feel like a treat – go visit C’est Cheese.
Thanks to his and Euan’s precise handiwork, responsive service, and the magic of “word of mouth” referrals, Wairarapa Windscreens has steadily grown its customer base - stretching from Martinborough to Pahiatua. The extra business comes with a demanding workload, including an increase in clients with larger vehicles - but Steen welcomes the challenge. “We’ve had more and more trucks coming in over the last year,” Steen says. “Trucks are a big job - but I always find the harder and more complex the job, the greater the satisfaction once you get it done”. Steen can repair or replace windscreens for all makes and models of cars, vans and trucks. He stocks a comprehensive range of windscreens and if he doesn’t have the right

The Autogroom/Kooltintz team, as well as Wairarapa Windscreens, relocated to 10 Papawai Place, Masterton, at the end of September. “It’s a great new building - very modern and tidy,” Steen says. M
ike McArley is manager of the wellstocked parts department at Norwood, the farm machinery specialists at the south end of Masterton. A qualified mechanic, he’s been with the company since 1985 and there’s not much he doesn’t know about machines. “He’s the legend,” quips one of his staff. “The absolute go-to guy.” Mike joined Norwood in the parts department and then trained as a mechanic. “It helps the customers if you know what you’re talking about,” he said. “Norwood has such a great reputation and people come to us knowing there is expertise here.” He’s stayed at Norwood because he believes it is such a great company to work for. “There’s a real feel of family and if ever there’s been occasions when I’ve needed time off, it is with total support and understanding. Norwood supply the product but it’s the people that make them work.” Norwood moved to its high profile site at the south end of Masterton in April 2009. Norwood Masterton is the most southern dealership in the North Island servicing Wairarapa and greater Wellington region. First opening in Carterton in 1948, it was the third Norwood dealership into New Zealand and the first dealership outside Taranaki.
“It helps the customers if you know what you’re talking about. Norwood has such a great reputation and people come to us knowing there is expertise here.” behind the Masterton Fire Station until the move to its present site. There are 18 Norwood dealerships around New Zealand and each one offers the range of brands and equipment suited to the region it is serving. For Mike and his team, 75 per cent of the business is agricultural but there’s an increasing market for lifestyle people calling to get equipment and advice. There’s also a growing market from contractors wanting smaller diggers for building sites. Kubota, New Holland and MX are among the products on offer. These cover activities as diverse as harvesting; cultivation; seeding; spreading; crop protection; precision farming and of course there’s the tractors which often catch the eye as you enter Masterton from the south.
The dealership relocated to Masterton after the Carterton property was destroyed by fire in the late 1970s. It operated out of premises

At just 21, Tyler is Operations Manager at SuperValue Featherston, which parents Brad and Rochelle bought in November 2018 along with the Bottle-O. The Meikle clan have spent the past nine months revamping the store, making notable changes to its products, layout and service earning them rave reviews from locals. Tyler has been an integral part of the family business and the new and improved SuperValue, working with manager Brad on the day-to-day running and maintenance of the store. The Meikles previously owned a SuperValue in New Plymouth, where Tyler worked every Sunday while at college. On leaving school, inspired by his parents’ “entrepreneurial spirit”, he completed the National Certificate in Business, while working full-time at the supermarket. At 19, he bought his first property.

IF YOU’RE SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR INSURANCE, SO ARE WE Stevie Cozens and Steve Vaney

Antique Furniture and Collectables Featherston B
uoyed by the success seven years ago of selling a few pieces of furniture they had purchased and restored, father and son team Steve Vaney and Stevie Cozens went into business. They opened 3 Chairs Antiques in central Newtown, Wellington, and went about collecting a range of furniture from French to English, colonial and vintage. Steve Vaney is a furniture restorer and could take pieces his son discovered and restore them to their former glory. The pair source their items from Trade Me, auction houses and estate sales, travelling all over the country to source the next piece. Frequently knowing the piece’s history from the previous owner. While business in Wellington was brisk and there was plenty of interest, they found the lack of parking in the busy city suburb an issue. Visiting Wairarapa they spied the vacant corner premises on Featherston’s main street opposite the RD1 farm store and knew it was
ideal for their new business home. Open a year now in Featherston they are getting settled and looking forward to the summer season of travellers and visitors. Stevie and his partner, Monica have moved to live in Greytown and are impressed with Wairarapa’s range of events which bring many out-of-towners to the region. They are in the process of restoring the showroom interior to show off the many beautiful pieces of wooden furniture. They not only have many wonderful chests of drawers but also hutch dressers, tables, elegant chairs and desks. Steve runs the restoration workshop in Wellington. While his partner Sharron, sources collectables and curios for the shop. She is in the shop on Fridays wearing her other hat as a doterra (air purifier) consultant.

Webstar Brendon Southey, Dave O’Brien and Dion Southey
Southey Honda and Nissan
Cars For All Generations “
Generations looking after generations” that’s the philosophy at Southey Honda and Nissan. The dealership, founded in Masterton by Roger Southey, has been a staple of the Wairarapa community since 1976 - and is still going strong, thanks in no small part to its veteran staffers and universally beloved brands. Brendon and Dion Southey (Roger’s sons), and Dave O’Brien are at the helm of the sales crew - among them clocking up 60 years of vehicle sales experience. And it’s not only the Southey clan who have made Hondas and Nissans a family affair. “Quite often, we’ll serve several members of the same family,” Brendon says. “Someone will come in and buy their first car - and we’ll find out we served their parents 20 years before. “We’re the next generation of salespeople looking after the next generation of drivers.” The dealership started out selling a range of models, before acquiring the Honda franchise in 1986. In the days before Japanese imports, late model vehicles were harder to come by so the Southeys added a new showroom and workshop on site. In 1993, the Southeys expanded their business to include the Nissan brand, adding more options for clients needing commercial vehicles.
“It’s great when you build a continuing relationship with clients - when they come back and upgrade to a newer model.” Nowadays, clients are many and varied - farmers on the hunt for a reliable ute, older couples who have owned nothing but Hondas, and young people inspired by Honda’s long history in Formula 1. “People have shown their loyalty to our brands,” Dave says. “Honda is the world’s largest engine manufacturer, and Nissan is one of the largest car manufacturers. It’s easy to see why - they’re historically well-built, reliable, long-lasting cars.” Dion says he most enjoys sharing in customers’ satisfaction once they’ve purchased a new vehicle.
Setting the Diamondstandard N
inety percent of the people driving past Webstar probably have no clue what goes on in the giant warehouse on Ngaumutawa Road. But Webstar is one of Masterton’s largest employers – and businesses – in Wairarapa.
Since winning New Zealand’s single largest printing contract, Webstar set up a magazinecentric state-of-the-art facility in Auckland to cater to their Auckland-based client. This second facility allows some further flexibility in terms of speed and print options available.
Webstar is a 7-day a week, 24 hour a day, operation, with 100 staff literally pumping out millions of pamphlets, leaflets, directories and publications for the rest of New Zealand.
Webstar’s clients range from well-known magazines through to mailers from many of New Zealand’s most well-known retail brands. Most of Webstar’s work is for large national clients, and we have been printing your newspaper – the Wairarapa Times-Age for the past 24 months.
“We have an incredibly loyal and dedicated workforce here at Webstar,” says Trevor Howard. “Most people stay with us once they start working for us. For example, our longest serving staff member, Kevin Hunter, has been with us 51 years”. Trevor refers to his “League of Nations” staff who include many foreigners who have made the move to Wairarapa in New Zealand and found their home here. “We have a wonderful array of cultures and people here. From England and Australia, right through to the Czech Republic, South Africa, and Zimbabwe,” he says. Those 10% of people driving past Webstar who do know what it is, may well have been through on one of the tours they do for various organisations such as schools or Lions’ Clubs. The machinery involved is impressive.
“It’s great when you build a continuing relationship with clients - when they come back and upgrade to a newer model.”
Masterton was strategically chosen for its central location and access to transport when the original Government Print was first established here in the 1970s. Webstar prints the TV Guide in time to be overnighted out to everyone in time to plan their TV viewing for the week.
Southey Honda and Nissan also employs a skilled team of technicians, able to undertake vehicle services, help with licensing, and issue warrants of fitness.
“We can get product transported overnight into Auckland or Christchurch – we are perfectly positioned for speed of transport,” says Shayne Williams.

Given the large volume of printing and paper going through Webstar’s doors every day, you’d be forgiven for worrying about the environment, momentarily. Webstar has 60 containers coming in and out of its factory doors every month and some of its clients do runs of 1.4 million! But, in fact, Webstar has achieved the highest possible Enviromark rating - ‘Diamond approved’, Enviromark is NZ’s leading environmental standard. Incredibly, Webstar recycles 98.4% of any waste it produces. “We’re especially proud of our incredible environmental standards and sustainability principles,” says Trevor. “We are the only newspaper printer and the only web printer to achieve the standards required to meet the rigorous requirements to be Diamond approved.”
As New Zealand’s print media specialist, we’ll get your message to the market faster than anyone else. Our product range includes high-volume, high-quality magazines, catalogues, flyers and promotions, direct mail and large format. Bike mechanics with Steve Sale Insurance + Mortgages a difference A One-Stop Financial T Shop hey just look like a couple of cycling fanatics fixing a bicycle wheel. But when you scratch the surface, you find Andy Curtis-Cody and Mike Toohey have a huge amount to offer the Wairarapa cycling scene with equally fascinating backgrounds. A bit of cycling history gleaned from Mike. The first bicycles in New Zealand were velocipedes. Introduced in 1869, they had a heavy iron frame and wooden wheels. They were nicknamed ‘boneshakers.’ Fast forward to the bicycles in the My Ride Masterton store on Masterton’s Chapel Street which are aeons ahead in design and comfort. Knowing cycling has such an esteemed history is rewarding for both men. Andy is the co-owner of My Ride Masterton with Deb Allen after purchasing a half share in the business last year. For Andy, it was a major mid-life career change. He trained as a nurse in England and for the past 30 years practised in New Zealand, first at Porirua Hospital and then for the Wairarapa DHB as a nurse manager. But one day his love of cycling totally took him over. “The health industry was getting complex and more challenging. I felt the need for a change and when the chance came along to buy into a cycling shop, I eagerly grabbed it.” He is no novice to cycling. He had his first racing bike at 11 following his father’s cycling interest in the UK. Andy loves long distance road riding and mountain biking. He’s entered most cycling challenges around the country and overseas. His latest trip to Europe was cycling around northern Italy. He hasn’t left nursing behind altogether,

channelling his experience and knowledge into promoting cycling as a health adventure coupled with good nutrition. “It’s my hobby horse and I promote this everywhere I can.” Mike Toohey arrived in Masterton around the time Andy was buying into the cycle business. His love of cycling extends to academic levels. His PhD at Lincoln University in Christchurch investigates the history of cycling in New Zealand. Hence, he knew in July 1869 – 150 years ago – the first bicycle was used in this country.
North Canterbury born and raised, Mike’s interest in cycling goes back to his youth when he worked in bike shops. He headed to Australia, the United States and Asia before settling in China where he taught English and met his wife, a university lecturer. The couple came back to New Zealand in 2004 and when his wife continued her studies at Canterbury University, he decided to do his PhD. Mike loves the strong cycling fraternity in Masterton. Working as a bike mechanic with Andy suits him totally. His wife found work as a social worker. Andy and Mike are creating a hub for Wairarapa cycling from their store. There’s many a ride starts from the My Ride Masterton premises. The store sponsors the annual kids’ tri-series, they are promoting night mountain biking and love club racing. My Ride – they’re cyclists!

“It’s great helping people reach their life goals and make good choices - buying a house, protecting their families, or saving up for their retirement.” First time buyers, Charles says, often need advice and assistance to address their unsecured debt – to prepare for an approach to mortgage lenders. They also need assistance with Kiwisaver withdrawal and Home Start Grant matters. Neil looks after the insurance side, and provides guidance on the various KiwiSaver funds available. “A lot of people are wanting to be more ethical with their savings.” Steve’s team enjoys working with the Masterton community - especially Neil, who has recently moved from Wellington. “I love that everyone seems to know each other. Every time I walk down the street with Steve, people stop and say hi.” The team are thankful to their administrators Tania Sale and Hayley Burkett for their support which is essential to the good running of the business.

When being interviewed for this magazine, we were interrupted by a happy property owner who wanted to hand over a bottle of wine in appreciation of a job well done by Keith.
David describes it as ‘a great relief’ when the team welcomed Keith Archer to LJ Hooker in 2015. “Having been in real estate for eight years and managing investments for over four of those, Keith’s experience, abilities and professionalism were a godsend.” Keith is responsible for the management and maintenance of rental and leased properties. “Fortunately, he’s a ‘hands on’ person and a bit of a problem-solver. Eric Daube
Dalefield School
Rural school celebrating its own unique flavour E
ric Daube heads Dalefield School, west of Carterton, with a creative flair which has its pupils running a radio station, producing its own newspaper, and calling their teachers by their first names. Historically (1885), the school has catered for the rural community it sits within but in recent years, parents have been making the choice to send their children from further afield like Carterton and Greytown, to these smaller schools with their unique and personal flavour. There are around 54 pupils at Dalefield School this year cared for by a staff of six plus several teacher aids. There’s Eric, Jeanette Stokes and Willy Jephson as teachers; Cath Carroll and Janelle Wilson job share; and Lisa Fitness does admin. “We foster a family environment of caring and being respectful of each other and using first names is simply an extension of that respect,” says Eric. “It just feels natural.” As for the radio station – it’s impressive. It’s managed under the leadership of the older children, has its own station manager, news readers, advertising department, reporters and fundraising team. Live streamed via the school’s website it can be picked up on 107.5 DFM. It’s a new adventure for the pupils having gone live on 14 June this year after receiving funding and being able to purchase the recording studio kit in 2017.
“We foster a family environment of caring and being respectful of each other and using first names is simply an extension of that respect.” Entitled the ‘Dalefield Star’, pupils take their own photos, write the words and lay it out. So, what’s all this got to do with getting an education? Plenty. Eric is adamant that if children are to adapt to the fast changing world they will grow up in, they need as many skills as possible and by as many ways as can be imagined. “I’ve seen so many pupils gain huge confidence from these activities.” The school is alive with upgrading work on the buildings too. A wide, covered veranda is being built on the northern face and toilets and cloakrooms have been linked by decking and a roof. Inside, the school is made up of two large classrooms and many outreach spaces, including the radio station. Eric came to head Dalefield School two and a half years ago from Martinborough School and before that he was teaching in Wellington.
“It is such a confidence building exercise. The skills learned are phenomenal, especially that of collaboration and communication.”
He praises the support he gets from his team plus the other four schools in the Carterton area.
Then there’s the award winning newspaper. It won the Wairarapa Times-Age 2018 competition as the best school newspaper.
“We are all aware of our points of difference and so can proudly self-promote in our entirety.”
We are a small school with a rural heart, 5 km from the centre of Carterton. A full primary, we offer exceptional learning opportunities for our students, in a tranquil setting. Dalefield Road, Dalefield, Carterton

In a new build, they can take care of all those extra jobs – installing the washing line; creating borders for gardens and driveways, building wheelie bin shelters and retaining walls. Ross Thompson, owner of Ruamahanga Fencing says nothing is a problem, “We make it work.” He has gathered and trained a great team of men who are meticulous and go the extra mile to ensure their customers are very happy with their fencing solutions. “Wairarapa is a great place, full of great people and our goal is to have every client of ours become a raving fan of our service.” Ross has expanded his team carefully to accommodate the demand for a quality fencing team to service many local branches of building companies, developers and private clients. Ross is an experienced fencer and his eye for detail and quality workmanship had him as a national judge at the Golden Pliers Fencing Competition at Mystery Creek Fieldays. He then realised his passion for people and deviated to a social work career for many years working with youth at risk. He enjoyed the work and found helping
people very satisfying but often limiting. Getting creative, he saw a niche in the market specialising in fencing and decided to start Ruamahanga Fencing, named after the main artery of the Wairarapa Valley. Over the past three years he has proudly built his team from working on his own to five members.
“Wairarapa is a great place, full of great people and our goal is to have every client of ours become a raving fan of our service.” “I get a real kick out of being able to work with an awesome bunch of men who come together each day and work hard and take great pride in their achievements. “We’ve developed an exciting culture in our team where we support each other in and out of work, and will go the extra mile for our clients but also for each other.” The latest member to join the team is ‘Bota’ a small digger for those tight spaces, and small earthworks jobs. “So if you need a quality fence built or another project you want a happy and efficient team to complete, give the team at Ruamahanga Fencing a call.”

He’s thriving, business is booming and his staff numbers are climbing, including one apprentice and another that has just qualified. “We have an amazing team of guys, with over a 120 years of experience between them. In a changing industry becoming more regulated, experience is key and passing knowledge to our younger staff vital, for continued growth,“ says Gary. Gary had been in the trade for over 30 years and continues to enjoy the industry. Moving to Masterton as a child from Mt Maunganui, he has worked at several companies around the region. For a change of scenery he spent 18 months in Nauru doing plumbing work on the island’s much needed infrastructure. He eventually started his own company Knightline Plumbing with wife Niki and the family dynamics continue today with Laser Plumbing. Niki doing the administration with assistance from their daughter Charlotte. The decision to join Laser was out of the blue when the brand approached Gary and his team to join their network. Gary says it has been a huge advantage being able to utilise the exacting SimPRO admin system, take advantage of the nationwide
marketing, gain large scale buying power and be involved with seminars and staff training. Gary says simply, he would not be where he is today without Laser. He runs six vans servicing the entire Wairarapa. Around 75 per cent of the work is currently newbuilds, the rest being maintenance. They are accredited to AA Home Insurance and do warranty work for various businesses. With Wairarapa booming, Gary has noticed an increase in commercial work. ccountant Matt Almond is one of the latest arrivals at the Wairarapa-owned and operated Osborne Group accounting firm. He joined the firm just on a year ago and works predominately from the Greytown office. Matt has quickly used his varied skills and personable nature to earn him the name “Have a chat Matt” from those wanting financial advice. He’s keen to help people grow their business – be it a farmer, tradie or café owner – it gives him a buzz to see them shine and the business take off. “Our job is to take away the stress and help with the accounting. It’s not just about ticking boxes and meeting official obligations. We are way more than just filling in tax forms.” So keen about extending the traditional nature of accounting, he has been involved in Maxim Business Consulting, another arm of Osborne Group established by Directors Jason Osborne and Gavin Hodder. Maxim is a separate entity which aims to assist clients in optimising their potential, providing advice on structure, management, risk mitigation, growth acceleration and general business counsel. “It’s so good to see people enthusiastic about wanting to know more. There’s lots of areas people just don’t know about and a bit of guidance can make a huge difference to their productivity.”
Accounting is Matt’s second profession. Born and bred on a kiwifruit orchard in Te Puke, he graduated from Auckland University with a BSc and then graduated with a winemaker’s degree from Lincoln University in Canterbury. He spent time travelling and working on vineyards both in New Zealand and overseas. It was while in this industry he noticed many passionate, hard working people enjoying their work and life but struggling with the business side of the role. Back at university he achieved a Master of professional accounting, topping his class in 2017. He worked as a risk consultant for the Finance and Economics team at Price Waterhouse Coopers before his move to Wairarapa joining the Osborne Group. Matt lives with his partner Laura and two young sons on a little lifestyle property outside Featherston. He’s pleased to be part of a Wairarapa-owned practice. Peter Jackson
Tick2Dig
Ground penetrating radar service means no ugly surprises P
eter Jackson has created a business, Tick2Dig, which he believed was much needed in Wairarapa. Using ground penetrating radar, he can check out an area where clients want to excavate, or have issues with water leaks. He can pinpoint the problem and give the all clear to dig. “Many times, I have customers who have spent large amounts of time, money and making a big mess, trying to locate cables, or locating that pesky leak, before in frustration, they come to us. With our equipment, we can tell them the entire underground story. It’s so much more cost effective in the long term for us to be the first port of call.” The Tick2Dig company was formed by Peter and wife Jocelyn when the couple realised how poorly serviced Wairarapa was in underground locating services. “Locate before you excavate” was the message they wanted to get out. Peter, an electrician, could see it would be unviable for many contractors to invest in the necessary locating equipment but viable if one company independently provided the service. His hunch worked and he is on call for all manner of locating services. While the bread and butter of business is seeking out cables, piping and leaks, he’s had calls as diverse as locating human remains, finding old dump
sites and to solve water leak problems which had left many head scratching. Their equipment is a huge investment and some have a ‘Mad Max’ look about them. This is partly due to Peter’s ingenuity and skills to adapt his gear to particular conditions. How about a Cedar Garden Shed for the backyard? A shed which can double as an office away from the house or a spare space for guests? Starting up a business and need that large commercial or industrial space? On the farm? Need an extra barn for storage? Affordable Sheds have been supplying clients with all manner of purpose-built sheds for nearly 20 years. There’s no job too big or small, or too quirky. Hence, the reason for offering the quality Cedar Range. Shed homes? This is a common request and one that can be catered to. Affordable Sheds have done them all from American Barn dwellings to small one-bed shed style homes ... just ask. One of the largest built by Affordable Sheds in recent times is the 2680sqm shed for Henergy Eggs at Te Ore Ore east of Masterton. The Ideal Electrical Store in Masterton’s Queen Street is an Affordable Shed and so is the Kia showroom on Dixon Street. Wineries have provided a lot of work for Affordable Sheds too and currently they are working on a gin distillery in Martinborough.
And, it’s not just the erection of buildings, the Affordable Sheds team also offer a complete design and draughting service to fit all needs.
I am fortunate enough to have an amazing group of hardworking skilled staff behind me and between us we deliver a quality product.

hen Certified Plumber and Gasfitter Warrick Ross decided he wanted to move to Wairarapa with wife Danni and three children, the company he had worked for in his hometown of Matamata offered him a chance to set up a branch in Masterton. That was two and a half years ago and Comag Plumbing and Gasfitting has built a strong reputation in Wairarapa for being reliable and knowledgable. The company has been helping the Matamata community for over 50 years and Warrick loved his work and the co-operative nature of the business. Comag Masterton was established with Warrick becoming one of its nine directors. Taking up an apprentice, Mitch Hooper, has also meant Comag is investing in young people’s future in Wairarapa. Warrick had grown up in Matamata and wanted a change of scenery. Being able to take his work with him has been a huge bonus and to have the support of Comag is fantastic, according to Warrick. Comag has a team of around 50 expert plumbers, gasfitters, drainlayers, roofers and admin staff which Warrick can call on when things get hectic. Like-wise, he has given Mitch the opportunity to work in Matamata alongside some of these experienced people when he can be released from the Wairarapa duties. Since settling in Masterton, Warrick has attracted much residential work and among his clients are well-established building, real estate and property management companies all clearly satisfied with Comag’s performance.

Warrick and Danni have enjoyed their assimilation into Masterton life. They were attracted to the area by the website Masterton District Council had created to encourage people to move to the area. Planning helps lessen Art (and more) to the out-of-control fires people I
t’s not often you come across a fire fighter than can recite the recipe for Crème Brulee but Nick Pyatt has it off pat. In his first professional life he was a chef in Wellington, mainly at the Boulcott Bistro, renowned for its Crème Brulee. After 10 years of cooking, and feeling like a change, he exchanged his ‘hobby’ as a volunteer fire fighter into his new profession and became a full-time fire fighter. It has taken him far and wide in the fire and emergency arena. Today, he’s Principal Rural Fire Officer at the Masterton Fire Station. “Both professions require the same skills – you have to be able to think on your feet and be quick to react to a situation.” His volunteer fire fighting began around the Eastern Bays of Wellington where he grew up. He served professionally in Porirua and Wellington, prior to leading a project on firefighter safety at FENZ National Headquarters. This project was sparked by a number of incidents where firefighters had been injured. As a result of the project, such incidents have dropped by around 57 per cent says Nick, proud to have been involved in such an initiative. “Our people can be immersed in serious situations and are so valued, we have to take care of everyone.”
“Think carefully about what land you want to clear and plan well ahead of the dry season. Use the fire brigade and get its advice. We’ve seen embers sit underground smouldering for up to four months!” Assistant Area Commander for the HuttWairarapa. A main component of this integration is the replacement of two 40-yearold Acts, with new “empowering legislation” to support Fire and Emergency. Further afield, Nick has been involved with FENZ urban search and rescue team, deploying in 2011 to Christchurch and also Japan following the tsunami. He also responded to Fiji in 2016 following the devastating Cyclone Winston. And, words of advice for Wairarapa people as summer approaches? “Think carefully about what land you want to clear and plan well ahead of the dry season. Use the fire brigade and get its advice. We’ve seen embers sit underground smouldering for up to four months!”
Nick has also been involved in the integration of urban and rural fire services, as he is currently seconded from his urban role of

Frank Dell and David Knowles and then there’s the myriad of artworks of all types and genre which will take people’s eye.
From the street, it looks like another art and curio shop in the south Wairarapa town but it’s far from the average.
The former Kia Ora dairy in Featherston is there on a large canvas, and so are the dark beauties of the 1960s which hung on everyone’s wall.
John has been collecting art, and the occasional book and curio, for over 40 years. He attributes his art interest back to his grandfather Joseph who in the late 1800s in Wellington made a name for himself as a photographer and artist. His tea gardens at Kilbirnie were legend. As owner of Newbolds in Masterton until late last year, when he sold to his son Mark, John used to store most of the art upstairs and few saw the light of day. Now in his retirement John says he’s able to unleash his “bucket list stupidity” and open the shop he’s dreamed of for years. It’s housed in the former Greytown theatre building and the art, books and curios pour way out back so those curious have to edge their way through a small opening in the wall to find a veritable Aladdin’s cave. It’s not all his own collection either. John invites people to bring in their art and he’ll sell on commission or behalf. As a result, the range is enormous.
One of John’s favourites. Leaning on a wall, are two huge colourful panels by Pat Hanly, specially commissioned by Auckland Airport in 1977 for the International terminal. Entitled “Prelude to a Journey”, they graced the terminals walls until 1996 when the airport was redesigned. The panels were distributed to galleries and put up for sale. John purchased two of them and believes they are the only ones in private collection in the country. The reputation of John’s Art Market is spreading and he’s getting visits from people throughout New Zealand. He opens every day except Tuesday and Wednesdays with the weekends being the real hive of activity. Make sure you have plenty of time to visit – there’s lots to see.

Keeping It Old School Cleaning with “I enjoy watching the professionalism and W metal transform and take shape, and working compassion by hand with some great orking with freshly cut steel, a heavy iron-rolling machine, and some “old school tools” has given Matt Griffith a fresh focus in his career.
Matt recently came on board as workshop manager for Carterton Corrugated Iron and Flashings, a new business on Dalefield Road.
Carterton builder Craig Ticehurst bought and rebranded C&F Industries, well known in Wairarapa for its steel frame buildings, after previous owner Pat Finn’s retirement. With the construction boom in Wairarapa showing no signs of slowing, Matt’s skills in the workshop are in demand - making metal flashings (installed into a structure for weather protection) for new houses, corrugated iron roofing sheets, and air ducts for factories, all from scratch. Matt, an engineer and mechanic by trade, says his role provides plenty of opportunities for creativity. “I enjoy watching the metal transform and take shape, and working by hand with some great tools,” he says. “I was looking for a new challenge. In the automotive industry, everything is computerised, and all about advanced technology you can plug in. “Here, you get to work with machines that have a history - it takes you back to a time where we repaired everything by hand. I love that there’s not a computer in sight.” For flashings, Matt uses a range of materials - particularly galvanised iron, zinc or coloursteel. Flashings are shaped in a variety of ways, and can be cut to any length.

He particularly enjoys running corrugated iron: feeding sheets through an old roll form machine, where they are compressed by a series of rollers increasing in pressure as they move along. Matt prides himself on his craftsmanship and accuracy, but also the speed at which he can fabricate sheet metal - providing clients with same-day service on request. He has enjoyed meeting his new clients - a mix of builders, farmers and home handymen. “A lot of our customers were with C&F since the early days. It’s cool to be able to carry on that history in Carterton.”

odent infestations, sewage leaks, water and smoke damage, and even crime scenes - it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to clean up afterwards. In Wairarapa, those “someones” are Peter Checkley, Michael Freemantle and Shane Todd of JAE Services. JAE, which has branches nationwide, offers a range of home cleaning and maintenance services - including carpet cleaning, stain treatment, upholstery protection, pest control, and fire and flood restoration. For the JAE staff, no two jobs are the same: the Wairarapa crew have experienced everything from regular carpet cleaning to keep the home healthier, to drying out sodden carpets after a burst water main or freak downpour, to painstakingly rejuvenating soot-covered furniture, to clearing out properties overrun with rodents.
“It’s our job to be calm and patient, listen to them vent, and answer their questions.” home and assets.” While working for JAE, the Wairarapa team have received extensive training, both in operating the various apparatus, and deescalation in times of crisis. All three have international accreditation from the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification. Their job can be demanding - the Wairarapa team are available 24 hours a day to attend to referrals from insurance companies. Some tasks also require a strong constitution - especially dealing with blackwater flooding, or cleaning houses where someone has died.
Such a job requires consummate professionalism - and, most importantly, compassion.
“Those situations are hard, but you have to jump into your protective gear and focus on the job,” team manager Peter says.
“We often work with people who are quite distressed, especially after a flood or fire,” Shane says. “It’s our job to be calm and patient, listen to them vent, and answer their questions - and then get on with our work.
Peter describes his crew as honest, hardworking and reliable. Despite the occasional stomach-turning call-outs, the guys find their work incredibly rewarding - especially the times they have been sent around the country to help communities dealing with severe flooding.

He brings a whole new approach to the traditional shoulder surgery, reducing the length of stay in hospital, minimal scarring, but still excellent outcomes. We are all very excited to have him as part of our team. Graeme Bayliss and Dominic Stewart Warwick Delmonte
Sellar & Sellar Accountants
Dynamic Business Advisers D
ominic Stewart and Graeme Bayliss are two of the three Principals in Sellar & Sellar, an accounting firm dating back to 1884. It is the longest established accounting firm in Wairarapa and is a trusted financial partner to many generations in the community.
Sellar & Sellar do not apply a ‘one size fits all’ approach to your work and advocate latest technology to provide solutions to fit individual client’s preferences and circumstances. They are Xero, MYOB and CRS partners.
Clare Jacobson completes the trio of Principals and they lead a team of 11. Sellar & Sellar is a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand which means hiring from among the very best in business.
Reflecting on the service provided, Graeme says “We work with individuals and partnerships concerned with growing and protecting their assets, companies and trusts requiring comprehensive tax and business planning services, through to primary industries requiring business support and total financial records. We have a culture in this firm of supporting staff and looking after our clients over their lifetime. We’re very proud of that.”
Dominic and Graeme have worked together for 30 years. They have extensive experience and are clearly experienced and comfortable together but there’s nothing dusty and ‘old school’ about the pair. Driven, motivated and at the top of their game, are much more appropriate descriptors. Dominic is also a qualified auditor and provides this service to many charities and community groups. “We function as financial life coaches and we love that connection with our clients,” says Dominic. “It’s all about the clients, helping them financially, and getting to know them. It becomes very personal and we pride ourselves on that relationship building. That means a lot to me and is critical to tailoring an effective outcome for our clients.” With its roots firmly entrenched here, today the business reaches far beyond Wairarapa, with both national and international clients, covering a diverse range of industries from hospitality, automotive, aviation, real estate, retail, building, and the trades, through to the mainstay of the hinterland – viticulture, forestry and farming and of course, in the current environment, risk management, safety and effectiveness of investment portfolios is a strong focus.
That staff support, along with the communityminded approach has made Sellar & Sellar a much admired and beloved firm by those it serves, those who work there, and the organisations it supports. Proud to be a Life Flight founding community partner and founding sponsor, and a key sponsor of Wings over Wairarapa, Sellar & Sellar support a myriad of other local institutions, recognising and returning the support given to the firm. Away from the accounting world, Dominic is a keen woodturner and immediate past president of the Wairarapa Woodworkers’ Guild. He is currently tutoring a 10-week woodturning course at Clareville. He’s also a bee keeper and hands-on on the lifestyle block he shares with his family. Graeme is an avid motorcyclist, noting the machines he rides covers American, Japanese and Italian. Both men love the outdoors and bush walking.
Paper Plus Masterton
Creative flair and book passion makes for winning combination T
he Paper Plus store in Masterton’s central CBD is a visual feast. The books, cards, magazines, gifts, stationery and toys merge and beckon in a flurry of colour and activity. There are two entrances to enter Paper Plus. Either by the front door on Queen Street and be tempted to buy a Lotto ticket, or to lounge on the leather couches in the library area, nicknamed the ‘depot of comfort’, then you go down the ramp into the body of the shop. Or you can come in via the side entrance where the busy post office operates. Either way, the store is a hive of activity and it’s hard to know which way to be tempted first. Manager Warwick Delmonte, with wife Sarah purchased Paper Plus Masterton just over two years ago. Warwick comes from an advertising background in Auckland and his flair prevails everywhere – from his green paisley shirt he comfortably wears, to the boutique display of high end books, temptingly on view from the couches, to the banners displaying the faces of his loyal staff. “Some have been here more than 20 years.” Warwick’s foray into retail came about with the move to Wairarapa. Sarah’s parents lived in Masterton and the couple decided to move from Auckland to ‘try out Wairarapa.’
“I stumbled and crawled through the first year and relied heavily on an amazing and experienced staff. By the second year I was brimming with ideas and now we’re starting to implement them.” and when Paper Plus came up for sale, Warwick grabbed the opportunity. “I stumbled and crawled through the first year and relied heavily on an amazing and experienced staff. By the second year I was brimming with ideas and now we’re starting to implement them.” Some of these initiatives are the school ‘Literary Nights’ where schools are invited to bring along pupils to be introduced to the joy of reading. Book Manager, Sue Reid arranges to open the shop in the evening and books and advice are shared with pupils and staff. The Kid’s Club is managed by Kalli Hooper. It’s a great solution for grandparents wishing to give books as gifts. Kalli carefully selects three books every three months on their behalf, and sends them to the lucky member.

We’ll straighten things out!
Old fashioned service and a safe pair of hands for all plumbing and roofing jobs
G
arry and the team from Bodyworks have been repairing and restoring vehicles in the Wellington /Wairarapa region for the past 27 years. Garry initiated Bodyworks Panel & Paint in 1992 in the Wellington suburb of Petone, where we had a tiny shop with Garry painting and Carl panelbeating. Over the years Bodyworks have worked for most major insurance companies and have completed numerous vehicle restorations. This has given Garry and his team loads of experience to bring to the Wairarapa shop. Garry and his wife Catherine moved to Wairarapa in 1997. Garry commuted to Petone and Catherine assisted in the administration area over the years working around family commitments. In November 2014 an opportunity arose to purchase Ross Smash Repairs in Greytown (formerly Athol Ross Panelbeaters). With the purchase of the new business Catherine took on the running of this business and Garry continued overseeing the Petone shop. The Greytown shop has been very successful in the past 5 years and the decision was made to close the Petone shop and put all their efforts into the Greytown business. In recent years some of the work being done at Bodyworks involved the refurbishment of Helicopters. This area of expertise complements the automotive work that Garry and the boys are doing and brings very high standards to their workshop and across both industries.
Currently at Bodyworks we employ four staff, Terry Tocker a Featherston local, Carl Ewers who hales from Upper Hutt and has spent 27 years working in the Bodyworks family. Both these guys are qualified Tradesman Panel beaters and have over 70 years of experience within the industry. We also have two apprentices, Ryan James our panel beating apprentice and Jordan Walker our spray painting apprentice. Garry and Catherine feel it is very important for the business to encourage the younger generation into this industry. Both these boys have completed their education through Kuranui College and we love to support our local College and the South Wairarapa region. The vehicle repair industry has evolved so much within the past 15 years that the requirements for repair shops are that they now have to pass certification to be able to do insurance work. The certification process involves educating staff on specific repair procedures to manufacturers standards, welding certification for panelbeating tradesmen, health and safety within the organisation and our sub-contractors. Without this certification the insurance companies will not issue you the ability to be a preferred repairer for their company. At Bodyworks we are a preferred repairer for most major insurance companies, therefore you can have complete confidence bringing your vehicle to Bodyworks Panel & Paint. We look forward to meeting you and helping you with your insurance claim, personal repair or restoration.

hen starting his own rural trucking company, Tinui-born Robert Williams went back to his roots.
Robert, a truck driver since his youth, bought Tinui Freight - a regular fixture of his upbringing in the tiny east Masterton farming community - in June last year. At the time, Robert says he was “champing at the bit to do [his] own thing”, so purchasing Tinui Freight seemed a natural progression. “The company had good bones – and great clientele,” he says. “A lot of my clients are people I went to Tinui School with. It’s great to be able to work alongside them and their families – I feel like I’m giving back to a community that gave me so much growing up.” Having rebranded the business as Williams Trucking, Robert spends most days behind the wheel, criss-crossing the Wairarapa country roads – and making stops for clients in the urban townships.
“The job brings long hours and winding roads - but the customers “are what it’s all about”. He has also started transporting beehives – which is “not everyone’s cup of tea”. “You do cop a sting occasionally.” Robert says he treats each client as an individual – able to find a freighting option that suits their different needs and budgets. This and his can-do attitude have allowed Williams Trucking to grow a long list of happy clients. The job brings long hours and winding roads - but the customers “are what it’s all about”. “When they’re happy, I can sleep at night, knowing I’ve given the task at hand my best effort.
He also travels as far as Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki.
“I get to meet some great people, who are doing great things in their businesses and communities, and see some really remote and interesting places.
“We cart it all – fertiliser, concrete products, timber and forestry equipment, wool bales, animal feed, gravel for driveways. You name it, I’ll give it a go.”
Robert lives in Masterton with wife Stacey, who does “a fantastic job” keeping the business’ paperwork in order, and their three daughters.

rom the mines of Western Australia, to new subdivisions and sports fields in Wairarapa - safety is paramount for David Lyttle. David, born and bred in Masterton, started Temporary Fencing - specialising in mesh panel safety fences for construction, renovation, demolition and excavation sites three years ago. After 12 years in the mining industry in Perth, he arrived back in his home town and discovered a potential gap in the market. “There were a lot of new buildings going on, but no safety fencing - nothing keeping people from just walking in,” David says. “I saw an opportunity and ran with it.” Temporary Fencing’s clients are varied: schools and sports clubs upgrading their playing fields, families installing swimming pools, builders working on new housing developments and retail spaces, and even a film studio needing a safety cordon while shooting a World War I documentary in Masterton. “You do all sorts - one day, you could put up a temporary pen in someone’s yard to keep their dogs in, then you go to a school putting in a new turf, so you’ll need 100 metres of fencing.”
“There were a lot of new buildings going on, but no safety fencing nothing keeping people from just walking in.” Flexibility on the job is key, as certain terrains can pose a challenge. “You could be working on the road, or on ground that’s quite boggy. Some areas you can’t drive in, so you have to carry the fencing panels one by one.” David prides himself on his dedicated customer service - which includes being available 24 hours a day. He is more than happy to visit customers on site to help them work out their fencing requirements. David also installs crowd control fences for outdoor events, such as concerts, Waitangi Day celebrations, the Tirama Matariki Light Glow in Queen Elizabeth Park, and the open day at Hood Aerodrome. He enjoys working with wife Gillian, who helps keep the business running smoothly, and sometimes accompanies him on the bigger jobs.

Earthcare Environmental – Wairarapa
Local Team doing the hard yards to live its recycling dream T
here are many companies and businesses attaching the word ‘environment’ to their name these days. Most are laced with good intent and the environment should be uppermost in all minds and intentions. The point of difference with Earthcare Environmental, is that it is the contractor to the three Wairarapa Councils and it is making a huge investment into the community both financially and with offering employment. It’s a family owned Kiwi business which cares about the local community, and its team is on a mission to achieve a 100% recycling rate. It’s not glamorous or easy work, dealing with other people’s refuse and recycling, but Earthcare Environmental’s team is out there on Wairarapa streets doing the hard yards every day, rain or shine, caring for our local environment. They haven’t missed a single day of collection, even during the 2011 Wairarapa snows when there was 6 inches of snow on the ground in some places. Lately too they’ve been working extra hard with the roll out of the Council’s kerbside rubbish and recycling scheme. That’s involved fitting 17,000 wheelie bins with lids and wheels. Stacks of wheelie bins have been
high and wide at their Masterton Transfer Station in Nursery Road and over the past two months the team has worked to get the bins ready for delivery. “What makes a business like this work is the people”, says Mike Jones, Managing Director. “Our people have been working behind the scenes for months to get the bin tracking systems and delivery routes right for the new Council scheme. It takes a lot of planning and a bit of problem-solving. For our staff who are loading trucks, collecting bins and sorting recycling, there’s also a lot of physical effort. So we’re really proud of our team and the environmentally-friendly contribution they’re making to our community.” Earthcare Environmental people are passionate about waste management and recycling in particular. The company first won the Council contract in 2010 and activity has never been greater. In the first year of operation at Nursery Road, Earthcare Environmental increased recycling by 20 per cent and it just keeps growing year on year. As a major step towards achieving their 100% recycling goal, their Materials Recycling
Facility (commonly known as “The MRF”) is being fitted out with a Sort Line costing upwards of $3 million. Using the latest technology this will help to ensure recycling in Wairarapa is done effectively. Featuring infra-red technology, the sorting machine recognises different types of material. It can sift out the wrong types of material, and group similar recyclable plastics together for example, so that the maximum amount can be recycled effectively. If the wrong types of materials are collected and aren’t well sorted,
tonnes of recycling that could otherwise be used again, can be contaminated and end up going to waste. While the Councils’ kerbside recycling service is still in its early stages, the bins were only wheeled out 9th September, the Earthcare Environmental team is enthused that their hard work is paying off, with Wairarapa residents embracing the new concept and therefore helping them to make a positive difference to the environment.

Ian Lucas & Neil Wilton Grant Boniface
ChemDry Wairarapa and Top Marx Pest Control
Total spring clean service I
f you’ve got any flooring or upholstered furniture needing a good spring clean, or have pesky insects or spiders troubling you, Grant Boniface has the right type of business and expertise to help you. He also covers an extensive area from Dannevirke, right through to the southernmost part of Wairarapa, and everywhere in between. At the beginning of 2019, the Boniface family purchased the ChemDry Wairarapa and Top Marx Pest Control businesses, and they combine them as an overall service offer for property owners. Grant runs both businesses assisted by his father Russell in the office, while technician Tim Jenner joins Grant out in the field. ChemDry Wairarapa is part of a New Zealand franchise. Grant and the family previously owned a regional courier franchise in Wairarapa, and after selling that business were looking for a new direction. Originally from the Kapiti Coast, Grant had moved overseas, and during his time away his parents moved to Wairarapa, where they have now lived for 19 years. When Grant returned from overseas in 2012 to help run the courier business, he found his parents in a region he also fell in love with. With ChemDry Wairarapa, Grant’s goal is to continue to grow and build on its excellent reputation in Wairarapa, offering the same personalised, friendly service as in the family’s prior business, and one where customer service is front and centre.
“We can clean anything fabric-based, from car and caravan interiors, to upholstered furniture, mattresses, hard flooring, carpets and area rugs.” Grant particularly likes the all-inclusive aspect of the ChemDry service, and the fact that the solutions they use are anti-allergen and chemical free. They not only clean beautifully but are also safe and non-toxic for both people and animals. ChemDry uses only green certified products. “We can clean anything fabric-based, from car and caravan interiors, to upholstered furniture, mattresses, hard flooring, carpets and area rugs. So, if you need a general spruce up at your house or business, or if you need someone to deal with one of those little, (or not so little), accidents that can happen to any of us, like pet urine stains and smells, water damage, fire and smoke damage – the ChemDry system copes with it all.”
PGG Wrightson
One-stop shop for questions on working the land I
an Lucas and Neil Wilton have between them a huge knowledge of all things agricultural and a comprehensive knowledge of the Wairarapa region. They joined PGG Wrightson as customer service representatives at similar stages in their lives. With years in the farming industry behind them, they wanted to share their knowledge and experience with others. Ian joined PGG Wrightson in November last year. He had farmed a sheep and beef farm at Mt Bruce and then ran the CastlepointTinui mail run until he ‘retired’. “I lasted a month”, he laughs. PGG Wrightson had been a freight depot on his mail run and he liked the feel of the place. “Good relationships are what it’s all about in a workplace and it’s a great team here.” Neil lives on a fourth-generation farm on Wilton’s Road between Masterton and Carterton.
With the Top Marx pest control business, it is all about protecting properties from flies, invasive spiders, wasp nests, ants, and all manner of other insects high on the nasty scale, including cockroaches.
His father had left his family all a piece of land to farm and Neil grasped the rural life happily. He’s worked as a wool buyer, did a stint of landscaping and spent 23 years at Juken Nissho (now Juken New Zealand) as a saw doctor. He has been at PGG Wrightson just three months and liked what he saw immediately. “I’ve gathered so much information over the years, it’s a great opportunity to be able to help customers when they come in the door with questions.”
Properties are sprayed externally, internally, or both, including ceiling cavities. The property is then protected for months.
PGG Wrightson Ltd is a multi-faceted corporate agricultural business based throughout New Zealand including its

It resulted from a merger in 2005 between Pyne Gould Guinness and Wrightson Limited. Ian and Neil are based in the store but have close links with the field representatives Geoff Horribin and Gavin Harris (pasture seed and grain) and Spencer Southey (horticulture). Ian says lifestylers are a big part of PGG Wrightson’s business and they get people coming in asking all manner of questions. “They are all keen and wanting to do the right thing. It’s a pleasure to be able to guide and inform them.” With lambing and calving in full swing, Neil wants to promote their scales for weighing animals. A compact tidy unit, they are invaluable for farmers keeping an eye on animal health. And, while agriculture and farm services have been a male domain of men in the past, PGG Wrightson thumbs its nose at that trend. Recently, Angela Parkinson has been appointed manager. In the store, Ian and Neil are joined by Kelsey Wilkinson and Kala Hunter (both currently on maternity leave) who come with their own specialist expertise. We have a new staff member who is Ashley Greer.

Hell Pizza
Hell Is Where The Heart Is I
William doesn’t see his youth as a barrier to entrepreneurship - but says his first year as a business owner has been “a steep learning curve”.
t’s been a big year for Masterton’s premier gourmet pizza take-out - and its young owner/manager, William Keedwell. When William first featured in last year’s Men @ Work, the now 26-year-old had bought Hell Pizza’s Masterton premises only two months’ before.
He is most grateful to, his close friends and family for their support - and his 11 staff for their commitment and enthusiasm.
In 2019, thanks to his investment in both the business and its staff, the “fires of Hell” have revved up a notch - with the store’s weekly earnings increasing by 40 per cent over the past 12 months.
“Owning a business is like having a child - it’s your number one priority.
Since taking over ownership of Hell, William has helped boost the quality and quantity of its product range: installing another pizza oven and tripling the number of delivery bags - the added resources allowing for more timely service
“A lot of them are still at secondary school, and this is their first job. It’s cool to be their first boss - I want to help create that positive first job experience they can look back on.
“It can be stressful, but it helps I’ve got such a dedicated team - they’ll go over and above their rostered shifts to help me out.
Under his leadership, his young team have flourished in their confidence and customer service skills - with their manager investing in leadership training, raising their wages, and creating a rewards system for whenever the store’s targets are met. It’s a devilishly good operation - and it’s clear the public can’t get enough.
“I’ve enjoyed working with them - they’re the kind of characters you always remember.” Left to right, Zac Te Maro, Jayden Mackenzie, Jacob Cooke-Tait, William Keedwell, James Mitchell, Max Mitchell, Carenza Roberts, Brooke Liverton, Connor Hourigan, Courtney Wildman.
“They appreciate that we work hard and make the effort to get them exactly what they ordered.”
“The Masterton community has been really supportive of the changes I’ve made,” William says.
William, who grew up in Carterton and attended Chanel College, started working at Hell at age 18 - eventually moving up to a manager’s role.
“People know they’re getting good quality food and service, so they come in regularly.
In 2014, he took a break from hospitality, working on the telephone network
and completing a telecommunications engineering apprenticeship with Chorus. After being made redundant, he returned to Hell, taking a job as a driver. Within the month, he was making negotiations to buy the store. “The [buying] process took about six months. I had a lot of long conversations and advice from family and my accountant.”
He also enjoys organising social events for his staff, such as go-karting, paintball and Cards Against Humanity, as a bonus for their hard work. “If you provide your staff with incentives, rewards and a good working environment, you’ll get the best out of them.” Whenever William has a day off, he heads out to much quieter pastures - the Greytown Soaring Centre at Papawai, where he has been learning to fly gliders. “I’ve still got a ways to go - but it’s a great way to relax and get away from Hell.”

ichael Macklin’s quiet, matter of fact manner is obviously picked up on by the animals around him. They sit and stare and when he approaches are keen to please. His own dogs obediently come to him and sit hopefully. Archer, Molly and Cruz appear to know they are special. They were all dogs which for various reasons, clients could not have anymore. “It’s so tempting to collect dogs, I have to limit myself,” he smiles. When Michael purchased Ladymead Kennels at Opaki, north of Masterton in November last year, he knew he had found his niche. “I’m not a particularly sociable person around people. I find animals’ company far more rewarding.” That’s not to say he doesn’t enjoy living on site with his wife, Kate and two-year-old son, Ryley. The trio make up a good team in a job which is pretty much round the clock care. In less than a year they have made major improvements to facilities, increased the car parking off the state highway and the gardens are attractively planted. During holidays, Ladymead can house up to 90 dogs, regularly there’s about 40. This includes between 15-20 ‘day care dogs’ which people drop off each morning while their owners are at work. This is a new phenomenon in kennels says Michael and one which is proving increasingly popular.
“It’s far healthier for your dog to be in the company of others. It’s so important for their sociability.” A typical day starts at 7am when the cats are fed. Ladymead also caters for cats where covered kennels sit away from the dog enclosures. They care for an average of 10 cats per day and reach up to 40 at peak periods. Between 7.30-8am, the dogs are fed, kennels cleaned and they are let into the yards. Then the day care dogs arrive. By 10am, the animals have settled and in early afternoon the dogs are returned to their kennels for rest. At 3pm, the process begins all over again. Michael grew up around dogs. His mother Sandra, breeds and shows Schipperkes – Belgian Barge dogs. She has been manager at Ladymead in the past. Michael studied accounting at university but the kennel work is where he’s happy. Returning to his hometown of Masterton, he is thrilled to be the new owner of Ladymead. He is ably assisted by Pet Carer Aoife Everton, an Irish woman with extensive kennel experience and who is studying vet nursing. Shonnie Tunnicliffe volunteers three times a week looking after arrivals.
ave Crawford is in his element. He’s working in the farming industry he’s always enjoyed but in a totally different role to the share-milking he’s done for decades. He’s a Sales and Project Manager for Bay Irrigation – a company which specialises in the agricultural irrigation field.
Bay Irrigation has its head office in Hastings where it began in the 1980s. It has formed relationships with farmers throughout New Zealand and irrigation machinery suppliers in Italy, France and the United States. Through these international connections, it imports and distributes high tech irrigation equipment with a focus on mobile irrigators, including Zimmatic Centre Pivots. Pivot irrigators have taken off in Wairarapa, according to Dave, who has just overseen another installation, this time the construction of a 406 metre long pivot irrigator, irrigating 56 hectares on a south Wairarapa farm. The technology is now so advanced that each of the 150 sprinklers on this particular pivot can be controlled individually and wirelessly ensuring water is only applied where it is needed and only in the quantities needed. To make this innovation even more special, this system was invented in New Zealand by Manawatu men George Ricketts and Stuart Bradbury.
work is when the water is turned on. Carefully planned and managed irrigation can provide a 30% increase in output from a farm.”
The technology was purchased by the manufacturer of the Zimmatic pivots in the USA. “It’s great Kiwi ingenuity that has now gone around the world,” enthuses Dave. Dave loves his role working alongside the farmers to get the best outcome for their property. “The absolute best day at work is when the water is turned on. Carefully planned and managed irrigation can provide a 30% increase in output from a farm.” And, Bay Irrigation provides a total service which men like Dave implement direct to the customers. It’s not all high end, large scale irrigators – there’s a wide range of smaller irrigators, pumps, generator sets, rain guns and booms. For all water management on the farm and large scale situations, Dave’s the go-to man.

As co-manager of Stonehenge Aotearoa, he has regaled visitors with his encyclopaedic knowledge of stone circles, star lore and astrology, and their role in our forebearers’ survival, since 2005. Stonehenge Aotearoa is a modern interpretation of its famous namesake at Salisbury Plains in England, designed with Carterton’s “fabulous night skies” in mind. The structure was built by members of the Phoenix Astronomical Society, over a series of weekend working bees, with funding from the Royal Society of New Zealand.
“When I was a kid, my Mum would save up to take us to the British Museum. I remember seeing a skeleton of a 97-foot Diplodocus things like that capture you forever. I want people to have the same experience when they come here and discover the mysteries of the heavens.”
Richard, a lover of astronomy from a young age, says guests at Stonehenge are always fascinated to learn about stone circles. Found throughout the world, their imposing pillars and lintels would mark the rising of bright star clusters - which ancient communities relied upon to predict seasonal changes.
Stonehenge has been a popular destination for school groups, rest homes, and tourists since its opening - with young and old soaking up Richard’s tales of ancient Egyptian, Greek and Middle Eastern astrology, Polynesian navigation, and Celtic and Maori star lore.
“Our ancestors didn’t have compasses, maps, or calendars, so they depended on the stars.
Guests are intrigued to learn that the Zodiac constellations, as they appear in the sky, bear little resemblance to their associated symbols.
“People believed the stars were permanent, untouchable and all-knowing. So, when the familiar patterns appeared in the sky, they knew it was safe to sail, or good weather to plant their crops.”
“For example, Aquarius doesn’t actually look like a bloke carrying a water pitcher. When the Aquarius constellation appeared, the

But the positions of the constellations change with the wobble in the earth’s axis so you may be a completely different star sign that what you’ve seen in the paper. “It is interesting how astrology unifies people - whether you’re Christian, Muslim or Hindu, most people know their star sign.” Richard says he enjoys meeting people from all over the world. He and partner and comanager Kay Leather are now developing resources and pamphlets in Mandarin, thanks to an influx of Chinese visitors, as well as te reo versions. After all these years, he never gets tired of seeing people become inspired by the wonders of science and history.
Gods would pour down water on the earth that is, there’d be heavy rains. “Leo, the lion, appears during the hottest time of the year, when the lions would come out and roam alongside the Nile.”

The Importance of Suitably Saying Goodbye
C
ordt Bensemann is a sales consultant at Eastwood Motor Group, the expansive car yard spanning the two corners of Dixon and Harlequin Streets in Masterton. It is the home of Hyundai, Kia, Isuzu Utes and Suzuki. There is the external forecourt, dedicated covered showroom, fully serviced workshop and a grooming shop. Grooming cars is where Cordt has had a lot of experience and where he first got interested in vehicles, their presentation and now their selling. Cordt grew up in and around Wairarapa in what he describes as an “idyllic childhood – lots of bush and creeks.” He has always had an interest in playing musical instruments (bass guitar among others) and after schooling at Wairarapa College he studied audio engineering in Auckland. “I always thought I would be a full time musician and I was for several years touring with bands but there was an awful lot of effort for little monetary reward. It’s a hard path to do professionally” Cordt had cleaned cars for a rental company while studying and when considering a career change he looked around car dealerships, now in Lower Hutt, who may want a car groomer. “I found a good job with a good crew and I got the fever.” He enjoyed achieving a pristine presentation and learned the detailed ins and outs of the vehicles.” From years of stage work as a musician, Cordt has an engaging presence and was used to presenting. “One day someone said to me – you should be a salesman. It stuck with me and the idea grew.”
“Many employees have been here for years and their incredible dedication to their work. It’s infectious.” When he and partner Alishea, whom he’d met initially at college, decided to return to Wairarapa and their son Wolfgang, was born, Cordt began visiting Masterton car yards. He was looking for a car grooming position and dropped his CVs all over. It was Eastwood Motor Group which recognised his potential. Cordt loves working for the company which he says has a real family feel. “Many employees have been here for years and their incredible dedication to their work. It’s infectious.” Eastwoods have a range of electric vehicles too and Cordt is enjoying the new technology as well as the way petrol-driven vehicles can be managed remotely via his phone. He has become a go-to person with regard to technology. “It blows mine and often customers’ minds when we start the car from metres away,” he laughs. And, his recommendation is you’re thinking about buying a car. “Do your homework and talk to a sales consultant like himself. We are full of knowledge and can steer you in the right direction,” pointing out that vehicle purchases can be one of the largest investments in people’s lives and it’s vital to make the correct decision for your needs.
T
he farewelling of a loved one in the most appropriate way for the deceased and those left behind, can never be under-stated, according to Peter Giddens. “It is the final act of love and like other important stages in a person’s life, can be remembered fondly, if done well.” The team at Richmond Funeral Home in Carterton are well known for going ‘that extra mile’ to make sure everyone is catered for in their own personal way. In almost 40 years in the funeral industry, Peter has seen a vast array of services and he feels it is a privilege each time he’s involved with a funeral. He has always had a strong desire to care for people and this is in the ultimate way, he believes. Peter moved to Carterton in 1997 from Hastings with his wife Jenny and three sons. Already with experience in the funeral industry, he and Jenny purchased D. & N. Chew Funeral Directors. Born in Gisborne, he started his career there, later working in Palmerston North and then Hastings. After raising their children, Jenny got more involved in the day-to-day running of the business and is the office manager. In 2011, they were joined by Blair Josephs, a qualified funeral director and embalmer, originally from Rotorua he came with over 15 years’ experience. His previous occupations had been in mental health support and as a

senior consultant in the financial sector. Blair has four children and is supported by his partner Barbara. When he can he indulges in beach combing, camping and kayaking. He loves art and is a bit of a movie buff. Like Peter, Blair enjoys meeting and being of service to families. Those services are vast and varied. Ranging from organising a person to officiate at the funeral; catering; helping families choose the casket; organising cemetery and crematorium requirements; casket flowers; producing hymn sheets and audio-visual tributes; recording the service; arranging newspaper notices; certifying death certificates and ensuring follow-up post funeral. There’s also a display of headstones and plaques which people can choose from at Richmond Funeral Home. There is also a great collection of books available on grief. These include a delightful Wairarapa publication written by the late Denny Chew and illustrated by Jane Sinclair “The Story of a House on the Hill”, a tale about death and dying, designed to help people enter gentle and healthy dialogue with young children. Peter, Blair and Jenny are supported in the Richmond Funeral Home by Anna Wolffram and Traysea French. In your time of need, don’t hesitate to come and speak with them.

Showcasing Wairarapa one frame at a time Jason Ireland loves Wairarapa. So much so, he’s created a business, Property Tour NZ which showcases the region, ranging from real estate, to the facilities available and the awe inspiring scenery. He will photograph or video whatever is needed and turn it into a winning production. Born and bred in the area, Jason says he cannot understand when people say they have to get away from where they grew up. “To me Wairarapa is the ideal playground for an entrepreneur. You can test an idea here. Wairarapa is the place to do it. It’s ripe for ingenuity and development.” Walking the talk of his ethos, “If you believe you can do it, you will!” He sets personal goals wanting to be better, striving to improve and always trying to grow. Property Tour NZ is a perfect example of this thinking. Jason managed the music venue King Street Live in Masterton a few years ago. When that closed and he found himself looking for work, he got creative. He merged his interests music, architecture and photography, taught himself how to edit and use a drone and voila Property Tour NZ was born.
Describing himself as a Video and Photography Specialist, he is now the go-to man when real estate agents and private sellers want to market their properties. A carefully crafted video, overlaid with music, taking you on a tour through the house, successfully inspires buyers. It’s especially ideal for overseas buyers who can get a good handle on the property they are interested in. Since 2016 when he turned his hobbies into a business, Jason estimates he has helped sell around $400million worth of property in Wairarapa. Around 260 houses per year. A recent successful sale which he videoed recently was the grand dame, ‘Woodchester’ in Cole Street, Masterton. “These historic houses abound in Wairarapa and they need to be preserved.” One way is ensuring there is a photographic record. Jason is enjoying ferreting out the history of places which ultimately intrigues would-be purchasers. His biggest challenge? Capturing the ambience of a property on camera. “Houses aren’t meant to be photographed. It’s hard to create the essence and light in a photo. A video can present that ambience however.”

There are also branches throughout the country, all operating autonomously. Wairarapa operations are looked after by Gareith Stanley and he’s supported by a team of drivers, Gregg Lee, Phillip Neligen and Clinton Morgan. Annette Mullis manages the office. “When the boys are out on the road, people like the fact that there’s a person here they can talk to,” says Annette who has had 20 years’ experience in the waste management industry. The team are proud of the locally run service EnviroWaste provides. This includes supporting local businesses when they need truck repairs or other services. Each of the fleet of crisp white trucks, with their green and blue insignia have different capabilities. There is a front loader, a wheelie bin collector and a Gantry collector, working in towns from Lake Ferry to Eketahuna. The EnviroWaste staff are keen to help customers with a manner of requirements – be it recycling information; what to do with residual waste, timber or composting

W
hether you’re longing for a specificallydesigned dream home, or to add an extra flourish to your current dwelling, Craig Ticehurst and his team can bring your ideas to life.
EnviroWaste’s wheelie bins are ideal for households and small home-based businesses.
Craig has been director of Ticehurst Construction and Design since 2015, along with partner Kerrie Sutton, after buying his parents’ Carterton-based company, Steve Ticehurst Building.
They are cost effective; clean and tidy; convenient to move; rodent and animal proof and weather resistant.
Dad Steve first founded the business in the 1970s, with Craig coming on board as an apprentice in 1991.
Front load bins are ideal for businesses. Sturdy, of steel construction, they have heavy-duty plastic lids and are available on wheels or skids and are lockable.
Nowadays, Craig leads his own team of carpenters, able to turn their hand to an array of competencies - new home builds, renovations, extensions, kitchen and bathroom design, decks, fencing and building inspections, to name a few.
Then there’s the skip (gantry) bins which are ideal for building sites, demolition material, garden waste and general rubbish clean-ups. They come in a range of sizes and delivery is quick and efficient. EnviroWaste frequently reduces the cost of waste disposal for companies by undertaking careful waste auditing programmes. This includes encouraging recycling; introducing cardboard, paper, plastic and metal recycling, and recommending the best way forward to reduce waste overall.
“We do everything from installing new hardware on a door, to building a new house from scratch,” he says. Craig says renovations make up the bulk of his work – and with the current building boom, and buoyant housing market, requests to make over existing homes haven’t slowed down. “People want to add their flair and individuality to their homes. “Some clients do have ambitious plans and grand designs - it’s great when people shoot for the stars, and we can deliver on what they envisioned. “It’s always satisfying to hear customers say
“Some clients do have ambitious plans and grand designs – it’s great when people shoot for the stars, and we can deliver on what they envisioned. It’s always satisfying to hear customers say ‘that was exactly what they wanted’.” ‘that was exactly what they wanted’.” Craig employs a team of six, including two apprentices, one of whom is retraining in his 40s. Employing staff goes against the grain, as many building companies only use subcontractors. “Having the diverse range of work we do means our staff need to have more than just a basic set of skills, and need to excel in a lot of different areas of the building trade. “It’s good to have your own team – and be able to teach apprentices, instilling in them the standards you want them to meet, and get everyone on the same page. “They’re a good, motivated bunch of guys.” Craig also engages in charity building projects - currently working on playground furniture to donate to Carterton Preschool.

here’s something all-encompassing and complete about where John and Jenny Bargh live with their Air Tractor 402B top dresser which John uses for his business, Bargh and Gardner Aviation. Set atop a ledge on a South Wairarapa road sits their house with commanding views across plains to the Aorangi Ranges, south of Martinborough. Immediately below is parked the distinctive yellow and blue aircraft – the Air Tractor official colours – aside its hanger and the airstrip. In the garden beside the house waves a wind sock. One glance and John will know if he’s able to do his job that day. Wind is his enemy as a top dressing pilot, that, coupled with heavy rain and low cloud. John and his loader driver Joshua Borgesson have to be ready to take off for a job as soon as daylight approaches, if conditions are right. It’s definitely not a 9-5 job! A seasoned pilot, John with wife, Penny has run his business in South Wairarapa for 35 years. He had been at the Battle of the Somme and at Passchendaele. A family reunion is planned for this November to mark the event. John has had the Air Tractor for the past 15 years, before that there was the Fletcher and before that Cessna Ag Wagon – all great planes according to John. The Air Tractor is a tail wheel aircraft and a great plane to fly with good safety features providing an excellent spreading ability. Recently, John has added a variable rate system to the top dresser. Using aerial mapping and GPS, the system precisely applies fertiliser where it is needed and the exact quantity required. John says the automated flow control reduces off-target application and manages fertiliser inputs. It avoids dressing non-productive areas, forestry blocks and waterways. In his spare time, John can be found flying vintage aircraft at Hood Aerodrome for the Sport and Vintage Aviation Society and the Vintage Aviator.

the largest regional suppliers of timber and associated products for the building industry. The stores are independently owned with each manager (Corrie James in Masterton) having a shareholding. This ensures an investment and commitment to the community and customers. Each store also shares part of its profits with every staff member, something rarely done nowadays.
t’s hard to miss the brand new 3600 m2 Tumu ITM building as you enter Masterton from the south and there’s one employee who is thrilled with how it looks and he is there to enjoy the new site – for a few months anyway. Bill Carter has been an account manager for Tumu since 2006, when he signed a fourmonth contract to help the company set up in Masterton, initially in Railway Crescent. He enjoyed the atmosphere of the place so much, he stayed on, and in recent years he’s been the one steering the new development and eventual move last May to the site at the south end of town. From an initial staff of around seven at Railway Crescent, there are now over 30 and the expansive premises, full of additional goods and services (both in the bulk store and the yard) are reflected in the staff’s smiles. One new addition is the kitchen and bathroom showroom. “We have a fantastic range of kitchen and bathroom products on display,” says Bill. “And it is the responsibility of Janeece Shieffelbien, who has many years of kitchen and bathroom consultancy behind her.” Bill is heading into his 70s and while he is sorry to be leaving Tumu, with the new store complete he feels it’s time to go. He’s a keen fisherman and likes to travel, so after decades in Wairarapa, he and wife, Karen are moving to live in Marlborough where Karen’s family hails from. Bill came to Wairarapa in 1984. Born and raised on a farm at Cheltenham in Manawatu, he tried farming but saw little chance of owning his own farm. Trying out several

jobs, he ended up as a timber manager in Hastings and Palmerston North. He arrived in Masterton with Crown Houses and when that company closed, he set up Acacia Homes on Chapel Street. The company offered low cost first homes and also project managed developments such as motels throughout the east coast of the North Island. Just when he was looking for a change, a phone call came from Tumu head office in Hastings asking him to help open a branch in Masterton. He grabbed the opportunity and he is proud of the Masterton success. “We began with a handful of clients and no real presence in the Wairarapa building market. It’s been a great challenge, as has the search for a larger site,” says Bill. “When the corner block became available in Solway, it was perfect. The new building and yard covers around two-thirds of the 2 hectare block which is now in two titles, leaving the
remaining title on Ngaumutawa Road as a prime site for any business looking for a high profile location. A vote of confidence in Wairarapa The building of the massive new premises in Solway by Tumu, is a total vote of confidence in Wairarapa, according to Bill. Tumu has its head office in Hastings and is an east coast timber firm with five other branches in Hastings, Napier, Dannevirke, Havelock North and Gisborne. It began in 1976 when Tumu started to sell timber from the O’Sullivan farm in Dannevirke. In 1982, it expanded to Hastings and opened a plant to treat posts and timber. Five years later it purchased the Carters’ operation in Dannevirke and further expansion continued in Hastings where bins and pallets are made. These days, Tumu Masterton is one of
The history of ITM goes back to 1991, when a group of six New Zealanders, with wide experience in the building supplies industry, formed the ITM Cooperative Society in the belief that independently-owned businesses could thrive when they combined their efforts. While ITM started in the top of the North Island, the formula proved so successful that the network soon spread throughout the country. As well as the advantages of stronger buying power and increased marketing resource, the ITM’s focus also includes a passionate commitment to consistency in quality, service and integrity throughout the network. With so many shared principles a partnership between Tumu and ITM was an obvious choice. Tumu’s passion for the community is reflected in the way it does business and looks after its staff. It also is a substantial supporter of the wider Wairarapa community. There are grants to sport and community groups, with awards and sponsorship across many fields and Tumu Masterton has just become a Gold sponsor of Pukaha National Wildlife Centre. Every time you buy from Tumu you are supporting that community effort and helping to make a positive difference in Wairarapa.

It’s challenging and practical.” He fell in love with the beauty of Wairarapa when training for his private pilot’s licence and he flew over the valley. It was a dream come true when he got the opportunity to join dental surgeon Dr

Robert Jones who had worked alongside Dr Paddy Greville until he retired in early 2016. Akash and Robert worked together until early this year when Akash took over the practice entirely and re-named it Masterton Dental. Dr Michelle McSweeney, an experienced dental surgeon from UK had joined them in early 2017 and has stayed on at the practice. Tia Yu completes the medical team as a hygienist and oral health specialist having graduated from Otago University in 2018.
“It was a dream come true when he got the opportunity to join dental surgeon Dr Robert Jones who had worked alongside Dr Paddy Greville until he retired in early 2016.” In his spare time, which isn’t much, Akash is trying to complete his pilot’s licence; do volunteer dental work overseas and upskill to post-graduate qualifications in Orthodontics and Dental Implantology.
T
hree months into his new business, Evan Morgan is just scratching the surface. Or, more accurately, blasting it.
“I did some online tutorials and a lot of research - there was nothing like it in the Wellington region.
Evan and wife Katherine are the team behind Wairarapa Mobile Media Blasting (WMMB) - an eco-friendly, dustless blasting service covering residential, industrial and automotive surfaces - the only one of its kind in the region.
“We saw a niche and moved on in.”
WMMB uses a wet abrasive blasting process – whereby water and an abrasive media, made from 100 percent-recycled bottle glass or garnet, are combined within a blast tank. Depending on the type of surface at hand, different pressures are applied.
“No job is too big or small. One day, we could be removing rust, paint and body filler from a classic car, the next day removing graffiti from a brick house, and the next blasting industrial steel beams and iron gates.”
During the process, the water encapsulates the abrasive along with the coating being removed, which falls to the ground for easy containment. No toxic dust plumes or ignitable sparks are generated. Variety is the spice of life for WMMB: the equipment, which is self-contained on a purpose-built trailer, can be used on any type of surface such as wood, brick, metal and concrete. “No job is too big or small,” Evan says. “One day, we could be removing rust, paint and body filler from a classic car, the next day removing graffiti from a brick house, and the next blasting industrial steel beams and iron gates.” Evan discovered dustless blasting while watching the US show My Classic Car on the Discovery Turbo channel.
So far, clients have been impressed not only with WMMB’s environmental conscience, but by its timely and efficient service.
WMMB is particularly sought-after by car restorers - as the water used in the blasting process keeps surfaces cool, which eliminates the risk of warping. Evan uses a rust inhibitor that prevents any flash rusting for up to 72 hours. “Feedback has been excellent. “Customers love that we are coming to them - it saves time and transport costs. “We go anywhere from Cape Palliser all the way to Dannevirke.”

Happy Valley Cycles
Wairarapa Heat Pump Cleaning
Cycling skills and Preventative knowledge to the fore maintenance of heat pumps vital B rent Sowry, the owner of Happy Valley Cycles in Masterton, has an important role within Cycling NZ.
He’s known as a National Commissaire – the cycling version of a referee or official. It reflects the expertise and experience he has had within the sport. He’s also a qualified motor mechanic and an E-bike technician for Shimano and Bosch bikes - so all these attributes come together to provide a skilled service at his store on the corner of Queen and Church Streets right in the heart of Masterton’s CBD. Brent purchased the business, formerly in Church Street, from Gordon Hyde in 2005. He was a keen mountain biker and general cycling enthusiast and working with his hobby appealed. He’d grown up in Masterton and life had taken him to Wellington for over 30 years where he qualified as a mechanic and ran a variety of service stations and garages – the longest being the well-known Viaduct Service Station in Kelburn. Recalling how he got into cycling, he tells the tale of spending two summers in plaster after breaking limbs playing squash and cricket.
Makara Peak.
Happy Valley Cycles supports Wairarapa’s Athletic and Cycling Club’s two major annual fundraisers. One is the ‘Tour of Wairarapa’ on November 10.
“I knew I had to look for a different sport. One ride on my brother’s mountain bike and I was hooked.” This involves three events including and the HVC Hardman – 100km of mixed surface cycling with 70km on gravel. Gravel cycling is the new game in cycling. The second fundraiser is the Country Marathon, which involves harriers and cycling. Brent’s store is light and airy and crammed with bike equipment and attire. He has set up his workshop repairing and building bikes deliberately at the front of the shop where passers-by can glance in on the activity.
“I knew I had to look for a different sport. One ride on my brother’s mountain bike and I was hooked.”
The move to Queen Street has been highly successful with sales increasing. Brent is interested in the rise of E-bikes and is finding older cyclists are keen to use these.
He loves the mountain bike rides in Wellington, especially the world class
“You still have the joy of being on a bike but the pain is gone.”
H
eat pumps have become an integral part of many homes, organisations and institutions but the cleaning and maintenance of them has been lagging behind according to Paul Richardson who has established a company to do just that – look after heat pumps. Describing himself as a “21st century chimney sweep”, he quotes Consumer NZ which states that heat pumps should be professionally cleaned annually if they are to operate successfully. “Cleaning your heat pump is much like changing the oil in your car – it’s necessary preventative maintenance for healthy running,” says Paul. A fitter and turner by trade, Paul worked in many roles that included preventative maintenance so he realised the importance of this. To set up his business he took a Small Business Management course with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa Masterton. On 1st September 2015 he set up Wairarapa Heat Pump Cleaning and hasn’t looked back. Wondering how they were looked after he realised that many people were cleaning their filter regularly but didn’t realise there were other aspects to keeping a heat pump running well. His service includes a full clean of both the indoor and outdoor units and testing the heat pump operation.
“Cleaning your heat pump is much like changing the oil in your car – it’s necessary preventative maintenance for healthy running. It’s a growing industry which I’ve happily tapped into.” Paul checks for debris in the outside unit which can block the drain causing mould to grow in the coils which will restrict air flow. Cockroaches and ants can damage the electronics which could create an expensive repair job at best or a full replacement at worst. Contracts with rest homes, property managers, schools and businesses have been great for Paul but the main source of business has been individual households. With more houses installing heat pumps it’s a growing industry with a lot of room for more growth.

amien Pivac is a warm and engaging straight talker. “Ok, how are we going to promote my two favourite past-times?” That’s the organising of the enormously popular event ‘Cruise Martinborough’ alongside his work as a real estate agent for Ray White Leaders, where in July this year he was the company’s #1 salesperson and is consistently ranked in the top 20. “Damien listens and responds to the brief given to sell the property. He is courteous, disciplined and communicates exceptionally well in a timely fashion,” reports one happy client. Another says “Damien is not pushy, he just sorts it!” And as for Cruise Martinborough, Damien has many plaudits from past participants. “Was a real great time. Thanks Damien for all the hard work over the
year to arrange this great event recommend to all”
place to start a family. Their daughter, Tilly was born three and a half years ago and in early August this year, Archie was born.
“An amazing event, it just gets better each year. Well done Damien”
The laid-back, relaxed atmosphere of Wairarapa suits them all just fine and what especially helps family dynamics is that Damien and Ngahina work from premises next door to each other on Chapel Street in Masterton.
“Thanks for well organised fun days cruising in and around Martinborough Damien. Enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. Well done” So, what has real estate got to do with attracting a huge array of classic cars and their owners to gather and drive around Wairarapa for several days during January? What’s Damien’s driving force? Damien’s says it’s his love of people, seeing them satisfied and enjoying themselves, coupled with his renewed enthusiasm for the region. Real Estate and Cruise Martinborough have both allowed him to connect and reconnect with all sorts of people across the region and the country. “If you love people and their stories it’s a great
position to be in.” Growing up in Wairarapa he was a typical teenager, keen to be anywhere else, but home! This he did, and upon returning to New Zealand, Damien met his future wife, dentist Dr Ngahina Gillies. With Damien, being a Wairarapa local, they both quickly called Masterton ‘home’ and the perfect
Cruise Martinborough was Damien’s brainchild. He enjoys classic cars and how they bring all walks of life together. Having travelled far to attend similar events Damien thought “I could do this in Wairarapa”. In 2014, the first Cruise Martinborough occurred attracting just under 200 cars. The 2019 event attracted 450 cars and interest is climbing for the 2020 event. Entries opened in early July. Owners of this huge array of unique cars come from all over New Zealand. Held over four days, the car owners drive their beloved vehicles on Wairarapa’s beautiful backcountry roads, head to the coast, and can even try out the Masterton drag strip along with eating and drinking some of Martinborough’s finest. Dates for next event Jan 23-26, 2020.
