Feral cat support needed BY GERALD FORD Uncontrolled cat breeding in Wairarapa is now becoming a health problem for people, according to the founder of a neutering programme for semiferal cats. Lee Priday of Wairarapa Community Kitties says the organisation is now tackling a semi-feral cat colony in Masterton near the hospital and in Queen Elizabeth Park. “Cats have given ringworm to children in the area,” she said. WCK began as Featherston Community Kitties in autumn and is filling a vacuum caused by the closure several years ago of the cat shelter at Wairarapa SPCA, and the more recent closing of the rehoming organisation Q’s Zoo. “In the whole of Wairarapa no one is doing any desexing, so the problem is getting out of hand,” Lee said. “One cat can have 100 kittens in her lifetime, and if all of those are then breeding, it becomes a frightening mathematical problem. “If people are finding abandoned kitties we can help, and get them fostered out and rehomed (but) we ask people to look after them until they can find a home,” Lee said. “People can’t surrender any more – there’s no SPCA or Q’s Zoo.” Lee and a few volunteers practise Trap, Neuter, Return, which Lee says is “recognised all over the world as a way to

manage semi-feral cats”, in the towns of Wairarapa. This involves catch traps and the use of vets to de-sex the cats that are caught. WCK is also doing its best to rehome kittens, or semi-feral or abandoned cats which have a suitable

temperament. The organisation was given a boost shortly after its founding when US charity Start, which rescues dogs from high kill shelters and to which Lee had been donating, pledged $5800 towards neutering cats.

That money has now been spent and the organisation is embarked on a fundraising campaign. There will be a sausage sizzle at The Warehouse this weekend, October 21 and 22, and WCK will also be at the Clareville

A&P Show at the Pet section on Saturday and Sunday, October 29 and 30, where they will be selling raffle tickets. Find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ wairarapacommunitykitties/

Seeds of hope sprout in Spring Ford Every Stream

Gerald Ford The weather is too nice to be writing anything controversial this week, although I must say I am glad Wairarapa has weathered our elections without degenerating into a population of two competing lynch mobs (whipped up by the mainstream media and the internet, respectively). Spring is the season of growth, and columnist Heidi Hendrikse has written a piece getting in the garden and about the joys of growing your own produce, in this case cherry tomatoes. Gardening is a joy I have yet to experience, but there is always a first time. In the 12 years I’ve lived at my current address I’ve converted one weed patch and one weedy gravel patch into something resembling lawn, and that’s about as far as it has gone. I do a fair bit of dandelion plucking, picking the flower heads off before they turn into seed heads and blow about the place. Lately I’ve graduated to grubbing these flowering dandelion plants out at the roots, which is slightly less daydreamy but more efficient in both the short term and the long term, I hope. The missus and my mum have done some nice work on a flower garden out front, but in the absence of a vegetable garden the lawn is still my main development project, and I live in optimism that it is continuing to improve. A related springtime preoccupation is the garage,

RACHEL

I’ve converted one weed patch and one weedy gravel patch into something resembling lawn. which may well have the potential to be turned into a summer social space as well as a tool and woodshed, if I ever get around to cleaning it out. “Hope springs eternal in the human breast,” the poet says. “Man never is, but always will be blest.” The implication is that we can’t appreciate what we’ve got, because we are looking forward to what’s next. I disagree. I think hope springs not from dis-satisfaction, but from gratitude. Thankfulness for small mercies and baby steps of progress build the confidence to hope for more. Hope is not wishful thing, it’s a specific, aspirational thing. This spring and summer season, leading into 2017, I hope to learn more about hoping. That is, I hope to learn more about setting goals and achieving them. Faith plays a part, I think. I’m not talking about religion here but a general attitude of confidence that things work out in the end, if we play our part. He who plants will reap. I have heard it said, however, that without hope, even faith is unemployed. This spring, let’s find something to hope for, and have the courage to believe it can happen. It’s time to grow.

First St upgrade

Children rush into the rain to grab balloons while adults take shelter, as the First Street redevelopment officially opens o Saturday. PHOTO/CHRIS KILFORD

Wairarapa Midweek BY HAYLEY GASTMEIER Pouring rain was not enough to dampen the spirits of Lansdowne residents and shop owners at the First St grand opening on Saturday. The $400,000 redevelopment of the Lansdowne Shopping Village was celebrated in Victorian style, with Masterton Mayor Lyn Patterson arriving in a horse-drawn carriage along with one of the area’s oldest residents, Kitty Muir, who owned The Quality Grocers with late husband Jim. Leader of the Lansdowne Working Party and MC at the opening, Rod Garden said about 70 people turned out, and about a third of them in 19th Century dress. “Despite the rain and wind and hail we got everything done that we said we would do for the opening.” Gareth Winter, of Wairarapa Archive, gave the history of the Lansdowne area, of which its name originated from Sydney, and the site was blessed by

3

Mike Kawana of Rangitane o Wairarapa. Mr Garden said Lansdowne street names spawned from three concepts. “There were the American style ones: First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth. “Then there were streets named after English army officers, and the others were mostly named after trees, like Totara, Rimu, Titoki and Manuka.” He said the developed area “which has come screaming and crying out of the 1970s and into the 21st Century” - would be an asset to Masterton. “It’s going to benefit hugely the people who trade there, who live there, and whose children and children’s children will benefit from a lovely village atmosphere for years to come.” The upgraded shopping precinct features newly laid-out car parks, paved footpaths, a green space and street furniture, with power cabling taken underground.

Hatched with help of friends

South Wairarapa Veterinary Service’s x-ray machine was used to help hatch the kiwi egg.

BY EMILY NORMAN A kiwi chick at Pukaha Mt Bruce was given a helping hand last week to hatch after it was discovered to be in its egg “the wrong way”. The chick, named RFP37, is now healthy and “doing well”. Pukaha manager Helen Tickner said the troubled egg was

one of four hatched in the Pukaha nursery, originating from the Rimutaka Forest Park. “We kind of knew Rimutaka Forest Park had a couple of tricky hatches before, so we kept a really close eye on these ones. “Jess, our ranger was a little bit concerned when she handled this one, with how the kiwi was situated in the egg.”

Pukaha got in touch with South Wairarapa Veterinary Services and asked for assistance. “They have this fantastic mobile x-ray machine, so we got in touch to see if they wouldn’t mind x-raying the egg,” Mrs Tickner said. “The chick was super healthy, but was in the egg the wrong way around - sort of like a breech

birth.” After the x-ray, a Pukaha ranger assisted the hatch by making a hole. The delicate assist was described as “touch and go”, Mrs Tickner said. When it was hatched, the chick spent a couple of days at Wildbase Hospital at Massey. “But it’s back now, it’s eating,

it’s on our daily chick feed roster.” RFP37 was one of four eggs received from the Rimutaka Forest Park Trust to be hatched and raised in Pukaha’s nursery. All four will be returned once they reach 1.2kg.

Growing of summer treats is worth the effort Above the Line Heidi Hendrikse Last year I wrote about growing basil. It was great that people told me they also had a bumper crop from growing it that way. It encourages me to write about growing things again, even though I don’t really have green thumbs. You see, last summer we had three grandsons come over [with their parents] and I envisaged those cute, Dutch city-kids picking little cherry tomatoes straight off the vines. A real New Zealand treat. Tomatoes usually grow fairly well at our place.

So in early November – much earlier and you are wasting your time - I planted six plants - two yellow, two red and two orange - in my favourite spot against a shed on the west side, where they catch lots of sun. Because of the high winds, they were protected with shade cloth and watered a couple of times. Then my health took a nosedive and I neglected them almost completely at the time they should have been staked and lateraled [taking the shoots out - aka thieves]. Depression and gardening do not go well. The mind tells you to go outside in the sun and do something, but you can’t get the body to cooperate. Thankfully in the end my lovely husband said, “You show me what to do and we will do it together.” We entered the tomato

jungle and did what we could staking them and taking some of the ‘thieves’ out. The plants had started to set fruit so we didn’t want to take those branches out. I would love to say from this stage I fertilized them and looked after them beautifully, but although I did put on some of my own liquid garden compost, the watering was still haphazard due to depression and fatigue. However at the start, I had planted the seedlings in a soil that had been topped up with compost. Unfortunately the tomatoes were not ready in the time the grandsons visited; they never got to eat a single one! Then about the third week of January I noticed one colouring up. When I wanted to pick it, it was gone! And again! After

all this effort, it looked like we were going to lose the battle to the birds. Google to the rescue: apparently putting up old CDs will deter the birds as the reflection of the discs scares them away. I strung up 5 and it did the trick! In total, from those 6 plants we must have picked about eight ice cream containers full of delicious, sweet, colourful cherry tomatoes! How much fun it was. I think there is a gardener in me after all! And everybody who got a punnet to take home said, “Thanks for the tomatoes, the kids love them and so do we. Think I might grow a few cherry tomatoes next year. They are so yummy!” So if I can do it, you can too. Let me know how it goes.

Space created for whenua BY GERALD FORD Four or five families gathered in Masterton on Saturday to break ground on a new placenta garden at Henley Lake. In Maori culture the whenua is buried in a special place as a link from the person to the land of their birth. Whenua also means earth or land. A handful of families buried the first few placentas in an area set aside by Masterton District Council and Recreation Services, after a ceremony led by Hoani Paku of Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa. The project was initiated Wairarapa DHB midwife Carole Wheeler after her daughter Mary approached Mayor Lyn Patterson on Carole’s behalf. Carole has also designed and made about 1000 biodegradable

ipu whenua, or placenta baskets, for Wairarapa mothers who have given birth to take their placentas home in. Masterton has followed the example of Nelson City Council, which until now was the only council to have established a placenta burial site. Families are asked to photograph and remember the spot – which has no notices or plaques, to prevent the appearance of a cemetery, and the council is also taking GPS coordinates. The Nelson site is on Botanical Hill where they have been doing about 60 annual tree plantings since 2008. Rather than trees, Masterton organisers have chosen to prepare a landscaped area to avoid problems with trees dying or becoming sick.

BLUEBERRIES

TUI PEAT PLUS

We are overflowing with gorgeous new stock!

Petunias, Dianthus, Some varieties Fuchsias, have limited Arctotis + numbers, so much so get in quick more!to avoid disappointment!

A WONDER FOOD FULL OF NUTRIENTS AND ANTIOXIDANTS We have all heard of blueberries, but what a lot of us do not know is that they are easy to grow. Blueberries are a wonder food and are a great addition to the garden whether you grow them as a specimen plant in a container, or as a low hedge. Blueberries are full of nutrients and antioxidants. They are also low in calories and sodium, contain no cholesterol and are a great source of fibre. Did you know a single serve of blueberries provides almost one quarter of your body’s recommended daily intake of Vitamin C? There are two main types of blueberry grown in NZ. They are:

HIGHBUSH

A native of the south-eastern USA. These are the earliest berries to ripen and start fruiting from midNovember.

RABBIT EYES

These are also native to South eastern USA. The rabbit eye differs in several ways from the highbush. They are more evergreen, more vigorous and yields are usually higher. They are usually later fruiting with production starting in January and continuing through to April. Rabbit eyes seem to suit our warm late summer/early autumn weather to fully ripen the berries.

FRUITING

The flowers and fruit are usually abundant, attractive and flavourful. If you leave berries on the plant for seven to ten days after the berry turns blue, flavour will be more intense.

SOIL REQUIREMENTS

It is important that the soil is prepared prior to planting. Blueberries need an acidic soil with a pH of around 4.5. Most NZ soils have a pH of between 6 and 6.5. This can easily be achieved by adding Tui Peat Plus and Yates Liquid Sulphur.

IRRIGATION

Don’t forget to water! Blueberry plants require a lot of water during the growing season. Newly established plants have critical water needs for optimum plant performance. Water is also vital for the full development of your berries, which swell rapidly in the last two weeks of ripening. Lack of water can mean undersized dark berries and a poor crop. Blueberries do not tolerate standing in excessively wet areas. They need plenty of sunlight to help develop maximum flower buds.

SPACING

Blueberries should be planted around 1.5m apart. Mulch well with Daltons Mulch & Grow to ensure the shallow root system remains moist during the growing season.

• Improves condition of the soil and breaks up compacted clay soil • Absorbs 10 to 20 times its weight in water and slowly releases it therefore plants get a steady supply of water over time • Aids in root growth by loosening and aerating soil, particularly aids sandy soils by adding consistency

Blueberries make lovely container plants or a nice hedge around a courtyard. Enjoy the pink tinged creamy, white flowers in spring and the reward of blue balls in summer.

Kapa haka first in Carterton

Idea services kapa haka performance at the Carterton RSA. Josh Mason, Francie Oliver, Caleb McNamara, and Daniel Thompson.

BY EMILY NORMAN emily.norman@age.co.nz Splashes of pink and black brought a unique element to a kapa haka performance in Carterton on Friday. It was the first ever performance of Wairarapa’s Idea Services kapa haka group. Around 20 adults with intellectual disabilities banded together in full force at the Carterton RSA where family and friends packed out the hall. Services. Beginning with the national anthem, the group’s energy continued to lift throughout the performance, with a standout being Ameria Wallace, whose voice carried the melody line in most songs. Idea services manager Trish Claydon said she had been “banned” from watching them for the last four weeks, “because they wanted me to see the end product”. “I just can’t believe how improved they all are,” she said after the performance. “It’s been incredible- I hadn’t seen them all dressed up or anything.

“It just looked amazing.” She said staff and volunteers had been instrumental in bringing the event together. “This was something we’d been trying to do for a long, long time,” she said. “We want to make sure that we embrace everyone’s culture and we’re hoping to carry it on. “We want to make the kapa haka group stronger to entertain other people and groups.” Idea Services had fundraised to pay for the hall hire and a sausage sizzle for family and friends.

• Wairarapa REAP which assisted in teaching the Idea Services group are also supporting the annual Schools Kapa Haka Festival next week. The festival will be held over two days on Wednesday and Thursday at the Carterton Events Centre. There are 25 Wairarapa schools performing a range of Maori cultural performances. It is open to the public at no charge and performances will run from 9.45am until 2.30pm, with a powhiri at 9.30am on Wednesday.

of service, receiving gifts, quality time and physical touch. Broadly, Chapman’s thesis is this. You feel loved when love is communicated to you in your preferred love language (or languages, some people have more than one). Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how much your partner loves you if they aren’t communicating that love to you in your love language. As is often the case, you only fi nd out about these things once a relationship has failed. In my case, my ex-wife’s love language was acts of service and mine was quality time. To express her love for me she would look after my bookkeeping and fi ling and helping me keep things in order. The problem was that those things meant nothing to me as far as love was concerned - sure, they were useful and helpful but they didn’t make me feel loved. And, on the reverse side as far as she was concerned, I was this nuisance wanting time to do fun things together. These diff erences can be

glossed over for years but will eventually surface. So what to do? You can go to the website www.5lovelanguages.com and take a quick test to fi nd out what your main love language is and you might get your partner to do the test too or you could fi gure out what their preferences are from observation. If by happy chance you share the same love languages then it’s pretty easy. However, if you don’t and this is common, and you want your partner to really get your love then you will need to express it in their preferred language. This can feel really awkward because we mostly tend to think that others are the same as us and think and feel as we do, or worse, that people who don’t are inferior in some way. Have a look at the “5 Love Languages” website - you might think it’s a load of rubbish, but then again it might just give you some useful insights into how to really connect with the one you love.

What is your love language? Soapbox Mike Osborne Why do longterm relationships break down? How is it that we can be with someone for years and then it all falls apart? How come those things you liked and admired shifted to become awkward and grating? Could it be that at the bottom of it all you and your partner were unwittingly communicating in diff erent languages? I’m certainly no relationship counsellor but I found the ‘love languages” idea to be useful. Dr Gary Chapman contends that there are fi ve love languages. The fi ve languages are; words of affi rmation, acts

Art goes back to the future Kuranui College opened a new art studio last week as part of a $1 million project. The two-classroom studio includes a space for up to 25 Imax computers for design and photography work, and a foyer extended across the frontage which would be used for exhibiting. Principal Geoff Shepherd said the complex, built on the site of the recently demolished B Block, was part of a rationalisation project started in 2007, which will cost out at just under $1 million. The suite stands on the site of the former B block, and a new landscaped area has been created on land not needed for the building. Mr Shepherd said art education has

become increasingly important and Year 13 students often go on to design school and digital design. Foundation arts teacher Clive Gibbs cut the ribbon to declare the suite open. Staff and students Mr Gibbs and invited guests including fellow foundation teacher Geoff Smith. The blessing was given by newly elected South Wairarapa District councillor Paora Ammunson and guests included Ministry of Education officials, Impact project management, Kuranui board chairwoman Belinda Cordwell, past and present board members and Carterton Mayor John Booth.

A new landscaped area has been created in front of the studio.

Puzzle time with Enliven Enliven’s Kandahar Home and Kandahar Court are two unique homes in Masterton, that support Wairarapa’s elders to keep their independence and to continue living life to the fullest. Enliven regional manager Terry Moore says the homes’ uniqueness lies within their model of care. “Our model of care, the Eden Alternative, focuses on putting the decision making in the hands of the people we support and ensuring we do everything we can to help them to keep their independence and to have companionship, purpose and control in their lives. After all, life is for living!” says Terry.

Conservation Week and Arbor Day, of all the many environmental occasions of the year (most of which get quietly ignored here in Wairarapa) must be the most mobile. Over the years I have seen them moved several times, never with any convincing reason I might say. Why would anyone want to encourage the planting of trees in August or September?

Actually it is probably quite okay in Westland, Fiordland and Southland, hardly places renowned for droughts. But here - where you are almost guaranteed a summer drought - you’ve just acquired a watering job, possible for quite a while! It is either that or a great waste of young trees. So why not just simply plant in the winter, as early as possible, like any intelligent gardener does? If you were thinking of planting sometime soon, don’t. And don’t be persuaded by any fashionable “compost”. Nothing discourages quite as eff ectively as a good old failure, or two or ten. Planting projects need discouragement like they need handle-less spades and foolish people.

Gold standard gets recognition Henley Lake is a good spot for a lunchtime walk.

PHOTO/FILE

Determination time It’s Only Me

Graeme Burnard

I have so much admiration for people who have successfully lost weight. It shows a gritty determination and a huge lifestyle change in some cases. And for some it has even saved their life. The most weight ever lost by one person was a woman from Mexico who lost a staggering 362kg. I can’t imagine even carrying that much, let alone losing it. Many years ago when I was living in Wellington a work colleague and I decided to join weight watchers. Their premises were upstairs above a chocolate shop. Cruel, I know. On the

way to our first weigh in, said colleague diverted himself into the lolly shop and I then followed him upstairs as he demolished a large bar of rocky road chocolate. He went on the scales first. Ooh, look everyone, 4 kilos in the first week. You have obviously stuck to the plan. Well done you! Your turn Graeme, on you hop. Oh dear! Followed by “what a shame” as I scrambled to take off glasses, watch, belt, wallet, anything to reduce the excess, but to no avail. I just don’t think I will ever have that determination when it comes to losing weight. I did with smoking. I went cold turkey on 30 a day and I can honestly say it was one of the easiest things I have ever done. No side effects, no cravings. My problem is when I get very hungry, there is nothing like a Mackers double quarter pounder combo (large) with lime milkshake. When I stopped

smoking I started drinking lots of coke (and I mean lots) and then I was diagnosed with diabetes so I gave up the coke just as easy as I had given up the ciggies. In my job, I sit all day and at lunch time, I get out of one seat and go and sit in another, so I have now started to walk around Henley Lake at lunch time. It is 1.6km and takes 20 minutes leaving me 10 minutes to eat a healthy lunch which I now take from home rather than buy. Sure I would like to be able to walk into Barkers in Wellington and buy off the rack whatever I want instead of going to T Bone at Farmers looking for the 4XL shirts on the rack. So if you have lost weight and kept it off or are in the process of doing so, I salute you and if anyone wants to join me around the lake at lunchtime, let me know. We could start a trend!

Matthew Furket of Rathkeale College received his Duke of Edinburgh (Hillary Gold) Award from Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy in Christchurch on Saturday night. To get the award Matthew had to complete a year of community service (working at the college library), to do a year of coaching (hockey) and a year of physical recreation (hockey and tennis), and to organise three four-day tramping trips for which he hiked over the Tararua Northern Crossing. A part of Wairarapa’s In the 1880s, the small town of Masterton, population of just over 2000, was gripped in a newspaper war.

T

he Wairarapa Daily, under the leadership of the redoubtable conservative Joseph Payton, was trying to fight off the fiercely liberal Wairarapa Star, edited by Alexander Hogg, supported by charismatic Masterton Mayor Alfred Renall. Payton, born in Birmingham, England, in 1843, was first off

the mark, starting the town’s first daily newspaper, the Wairarapa Daily, in conjunction with W Roydhouse and E Samuel on November 4, 1878.

By then both newspapers had changed their titles. In 1892 Payton had renamed his to the Wairarapa Daily Times, while in 1902 the Star changed to the Wairarapa Age to coincide with switching to morning publication.

Payton had previously worked for his father-in-law Richard Wakelin on the Wairarapa Standard in Greytown. The Star was produced in a wooden building on the corner of Lincoln Road and Queen Street, named after Payton held deeply conservative views (some the paper. history since the 1880s events such as Edmund Hillary and Tensing’s conquering of Mount Everest for the first time, and the almost simultaneous coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953. Shortly afterwards, the Cossar was replaced by a faster Crabtree press. It continued to report on international and national news, but its focus was on the local. It recorded the devastating effects of the “Wahine” storm in 1968, and the economic impacts of the closure of the Waingawa freezing works in 1989. It also recorded the remarkable rise of Georgina Beyer, from councillor to mayor to Member of Parliament. By 1961 the building had to be expanded and in 1975 two web-offset presses were installed. By the time of its 50th anniversary in 1988 it was employing 160 people. Just prior to that, in 1987, a new publication was started, The newsroom in 1995 to provide better and wider regional coverage. Two enthusiastic reporters, Frank Fyfe and Ken Garmonsway, were soon traipsing all over Wairarapa gathering copy for Midweek. Many years of local ownership ended in 2002, when Wilson and Horton (later APN) bought the newspaper and in 2004 printing shifted to Wanganui. The company formed a lower North Island publishing group in 2010 which included the Wairarapa Times-Age, and APN became NZME in 2014. However, the biggest change came in 2011 when the newspaper switched from evening distribution to morning, and also morphed into a tabloid. Your locally owned newspaper

Editorial

Our own independent daily - in keeping with the spirit of Wairarapa

W

e’re pretty lucky to have a daily newspaper in Wairarapa. Most regions our size around the country have lost theirs – or never had one. And once you lose your local paper, it’s pretty hard to get it back. The fact that the Wairarapa Times-Age is now locally owned and independent makes it even more special. It means we’re always going to be more in tune to what matters to our readers, and better positioned to reflect their point of view. Because it’s our point of view, too. Our reporters live in this region, they are part of our communities, just like everyone else in our organisation. We report your stories, because they are our stories. There has always been a strong independent streak in our region. It goes right back to the pioneering men and women who trudged over the hill from Wellington, determined to carve out a new life for themselves. With Wairarapa’s strong rural backbone, and our large farming community, that spirit continues. People here do things for themselves, they get by on their own, they carry that independent attitude. That’s why having an independent voice through the region’s newspaper makes so much sense - it reflects the values of the people who live here. We are very proud to be able to call ourselves locally owned. And we’ll keep doing our best to bring you quality, independent news.

Seamus Boyer Editor The editorial team Don Farmer is our chief reporter, specialising in Masterton District Council, Greater Wellington Regional Council and managing our team of reporters. Senior reporter Geoff Vause covers court, education, Carterton District Council and iwi issues.

Wairarapa Community Orchestra in action.

Musos to play for the kids The Wairarapa Community Orchestra is turning its attention to children for its next duet of concerts on October 29. The Kids’ Pop Musical Walkabout concert will start at 11am while the Musical Mishmash, aimed at people over seven will start at 2pm in the Wairarapa College Hall. Entry will be $5 each or $15 for a family of four. Tickets can be purchased from the Ten O’Clock Cookie Bakery-Café or at the door. Conductor Ruth Eckford said she looks forward to “to exposing children to the rich sound of an orchestra and to watching them respond to the music”. “We want the audience to participate with children walking amongst the orchestra while it is playing, singing along, conducting and playing percussion instruments.” For the Kid’s Pop concert some pieces will be well known favourites like The Teddy Bear’s Picnic, The Wheels of the Bus, If You’re Happy and You Know It and Let It Go from Frozen, while the Baby Elephant Walk and the theme to Batman, Pink Panther and The Hall of the Mountain King may be less familiar. Children are invited to dress up, to bring their teddy bears and perhaps a cushion if they want to sit at the front at the Kids’ Pop concert. The Musical Mishmash concert at 2pm

will feature a musical demonstration of the various instruments in the orchestra as well as playing familiar tunes such as the theme from Star Wars and Batman and the Pink Panther. Popular classics, such as excerpts from Pictures at an Exhibition, The Hall of the Mountain King, Brahms Hungarian Dance and The Elephant from the Carnival of the Animals, will feature as well as Let it Go from Frozen, and a medley from Queen. Callum Finn Reason from Rathkeale College will sing the Teddy Bear’s Picnic and lead the singing of the popular children’s action songs. The concerts will be narrated by Michael Wilson, actor, broadcaster and manager of the Wairarapa access radio station Arrow FM. Mr Wilson said he is looking forward to learning more about how orchestras operate. He thinks it will be interesting to see the different reactions of the two age groups. Ruth Eckford says “Many musicians have been inspired to play a particular instrument after attending concerts as children. I hope these concerts will hook children into playing an instrument.” “While our special focus is on introducing children to orchestral music, this concert is ideal for anyone wanting to hear an orchestra concert at a low cost. We also welcome our usual audiences who will enjoy familiar music.”

Since then St Patrick’s have had caretakers that are totally involved with the school’s Enviroschool movement - which has made it integrate more easily into the life of the school and the community. Over the years St Patrick’s waste management has extended to worm farms, having chickens, presenting new pupils with reusable lunch containers and more recently the PTA now run waste-free events. Mrs Stewart said the Enviroschools philosophy is “really deep within the school, there are lots of sustainable practices, it is in the curriculum, there are

After 10 years being an Enviroschool, St Patrick’s school is celebrating by planting a rimu marking the change to “Green Gold” level. The school has a growing native bush area and vegetable gardens which the students use for cooking and sharing with their community, and they have a weekly walking school bus. So you have decided you need an Enduring Power of Attorney. Maybe you are in perfect health. But whichever type of Power of Attorney you decide to set up, it will not come into effect unless or until you become mentally incapable. This must be decided upon by a medical professional. You can also make your own terms to the EPA of just when you want it to come into effect. But rest assured that no one will be acting on your behalf as an Attorney under this contract until the conditions you have decided upon come into play. If this mental incapacity is only temporary, then so too will be the powers of your nominated Attorney. Remember there are two types of Enduring Power of Attorney. One is for property and the other is for your personal care and attention. You may give both types to Attorney to one person, or you can do two separate types for two different people. With the EPA for property it may be a good idea to have two people who must work together. They have a responsibility to consult with you as much as is practicable, and to provide information about their actions to any third party nominated by you. If an application is made to the Family Court, (for example, by a family member) the Court has the power to review the performance of the Attorney.

Situations change. You are making this EPA before you are incapacitated, and you can change, end, or make a new EPA at any stage. The appointed Attorney may die, become bankrupt, or become subject to a personal or property court order, or the Family Court may revoke their appointment. Please note that this Power of Attorney will cease when you die. It does not extend into the administration of your estate. Also if your appointee no longer wishes to be your Attorney any more, they can notify you of this in writing, or apply to the Family Court if you have become mentally incapable. If you decide to go ahead and make an Enduring Power of Attorney it would be a good idea to also have a folder containing a list of your money and property, how you would like things to be dealt with, your personal wishes in regard to care, and who

else in your family you would like to have consulted. This will make things easier for the Attorney to act in your best interests. You can download the forms for an Enduring Power of Attorney online. You must receive advice from an authorised person who will be your witness. This can be a lawyer, a qualified legal executive or an authorised officer or employee of a trustee corporation. It is worth asking around to get an idea of how much you will be charged for the service. You can make things cheaper by having all the information required at hand. For more information go to www.msd.govt.nz/epa.

Meet your next agent

Spring is here and the real estate market is buoyant. Whether you are looking to buy or sell, in most cases, a professional real estate agent will be your first port of call Both buyers and sellers have choices about the agent they choose to deal with. As a seller, you can contact as many agents as you like for an appraisal of your property before you decide who to list with. If there is a specific

33

agent you would like to use you can contact them directly, says the Real Estate Agents Authority. If you are a buyer, you can contact any agent from the agency the property is listed with and ask to deal with them, it points out. “Meet Your Next Agent” is an ideal opportunity to get to know Wairarapa’s agents and make the best choice for your next property sale or purchase.

John Murray

John has been a specialist rural and lifestyle agent in Wairarapa since 1998. From a strong stock and station background with a Lincoln University B Com (Ag) degree, he is well known in the region for his honesty and knowledge of the local market. His past clients have been impressed with his professionalism and ability to get the best result for Vendor and Purchaser – the objective is always a ‘win-win’ outcome. A genuine relationship, based on trust, is most important. He has been married to Judy for over 40 years, with 3 adult daughters. They have a 50ha sheep and beef farm at Kopuaranga, which is a key interest and this helps John empathise with the many farmers he meets day to day. His excellent reputation is built on successful marketing of rural and lifestyle property and an extensive database of rural contacts.

John Murray

Gary Scott Gary is a rural real estate specialist having been selling rural real estate for over 30 years in the North Island, dealing with sheep, beef breeding, finishing units, dairy and cropping properties. One particular sale realising $32.5 million won him the national prize for the highest value sale for PGG Wrightson Real Estate for that year. Gary’s success and ability is widely recognised. Prior to real estate, his experience gained from being a stock agent and a prime stock buyer, has given him great insight and knowledge of the finer points surrounding the very business of farming. Having owned his own 85ha farm has helped Gary immensely in understanding first-hand the trials and tribulations which his rural clients face on a day to day basis. His empathy with owners, where a large percentage has spent a life time on their properties, is well known as is his attention to detail. Gary is the Real Estate Branch Manager for Masterton.

It’s not what I say; it’s what others say about me…

With twelve years’ experience in an ever changing and challenging real estate market, Fran’s adaption, knowledge and involvement within the community have been key elements that have helped her gain a reputation of excellent work ethics and a high market share. Fran believes Featherston and the rural surrounds has now become the next popular destination and place to live in the Wairarapa, this is evident with the South Wairarapa house prices increasing and the market now becoming a seller’s market, buyers are now out numbering the number of houses on the market resulting in multiple offers. She is supported by a very capable team of agents within the Featherston office and thou they run their own business independently they continue to work as a team and are all very proud to support the community in any way possible.

Gina’s success is a combination of experience, and expertise in her industry. Her commitment to helping her Vendors achieve their desired result with minimal stress has seen her accumulate an enormous following of loyal clients throughout the Wairarapa as a respected real estate salesperson. Gina’s knowledge of the local district and the current market is outstanding, and she has earned a reputation for her honest, upfront approach to real estate. Gina doesn’t just talk the talk, she is a consistent top achiever at company awards – holding the #1 Salesperson title for the fifth year running. If its experience, professionalism, high standards and honesty you require from your salesperson, then Gina Collings looks forward to hearing from you.

Having been born and bred in Carterton, being a local girl has meant that Jenny has accumulated many contacts over her years working in many aspects of the service industry. With an outgoing personality and a passion for her career, Jenny has thrown herself enthusiastically into doing her best to provide a stress free experience for her vendors and purchasers, and loves every minute of it! Jenny is able to commit herself full time to her career, and goes out of her way to provide the best possible service for her clients, whether buying or selling. With great marketing comes a great result, as Jenny has discovered, and is passionate about guiding people through what can be a stressful time. If its enthusiasm, honesty and dedication you require from your real estate agent, then give Jenny Keating a call.

Hi Alice, So sad we’ve lost you...Central Otago will miss you! Best damn agent we’ve ever dealt with! We are just putting our house on the market and gutted you are no longer here with your fantastic straight talking advice. Come on Wairarapa...get in behind Alice... she’s an absolute gem! People Who Mean Business – the ideal advertising vehicle for businesses People Who Mean Business has been publishing for many years in the Wairarapa Midweek and has been very successful for the majority of businesses that have advertised. This is very cost effective advertising and all businesses who advertise have the opportunity for a free advertorial which can be written by our features writer and proofed to you prior to going to print. Many advertisers have commented on the excellent

TRAVEL

response they enjoy from these advertorials. Advertising prices range from $40 + GST to $33.40 + GST per week (for a 12 month commitment). Some of the advertisers roll over their annual commitment and others come in for a shorter time frame for a variety of reasons. If you are interested in finding out more information or would like to book your space please do not hesitate to call Jill on 06 370 0955. WINDOWS
