Living the kiwi dream Wairarapa, have you heard of it? No, it’s not the wire around the top of the champagne bottle, but it may as will be. Were you to come check it out as an alternative option to Auckland to live in, chances are you would be popping bottles of bubbly celebrating. Perhaps it is by accident that Wairarapa, the big chunk of the eastern part of the lower North Island, is something of a “best kept secret”. However,

the secret is out, and city folk are making the move. While Greytown in South Wairarapa is the poster-child for the region with its quaint village like setting, Masterton is very much the heart and soul. At the top of the valley, Masterton boasts all of the trimmings of city life - a variety of entertainment and events, cafes and restaurants, great schools and public amenities. What is fundamentally

P E W A

Auckland will cost between three and four times the price than in Masterton.

different though is, the town of 23,000 isn’t burdened with congestion, and is very affordable.

As some realtors are reporting, most people trying to escape Auckland aren’t doing so to replicate the life that they already have, but instead upgrade it. Property Brokers Wairarapa general manager Guy Mordaunt says the fact is, your money goes a long way in Wairarapa.

With property prices in Auckland - and other main centres - crushing the hopes and dreams of many young Kiwis, in Masterton the quarter acre section is very much a reality. An equivalent home in any of the sort-after suburbs of

“Right now, based on current prices, you can sell your two bedroom place in Kingsland (Auckland) for $1.2million and move down to Masterton and buy an unbelievable house with a pool, be mortgage free and still have a load of money in the bank. It’s life changing,” Mr Mordaunt says. Price alone isn’t driving Aucklanders south to Masterton, it is also the “lack of lifestyle” in New Zealand’s

The secret is out: Hidden away down the bottom of the island, or maybe just not on anyone’s radar, Masterton is now ticking all the right boxes as a great place to live. Harcourts Hamill Realty principal Prue Hamill says, ever since MyMasterton commissioned a series of publicity magazines for distribution into Auckland, outside activity in the local property market has taken off. “Maybe it was a case of not many people knowing about us before? But they do now,” Mrs Hamill says. All real estate companies are reporting significant growth in “outside” buyers, particularly from Auckland. biggest city, according to local LJ Hooker principal David McHattie. “A lot of people are coming here to live because it is so easy, they love it. They can always go back to Auckland to visit family and friends,” Mr McHattie says. “It is such an easy town to get around, and as far as a shopping experience goes we have got most things. We are incredibly well served by

national retailers given the size of the population.” Also, not to be underestimated he says, is the fact that Masterton has a really good hospital plus other well established essential services. Leaders agent Brad Chittick says Auckland buyers are telling him that a big plus about making a new life in Masterton is saying good riddance to all of the stress and anxiety which is often associated with living in a big city.

P E W A

“It is surprising the number of people who have either made the move or are still looking and waiting for the right property to come up,” Mrs Hamill says.

“The reality is, to live in Auckland you have got to sustain a big mortgage. That brings with it a whole lot of pressure, and people are saying that it is just not worth it,” Mr Chittick says.

And who can blame them with Masterton offering a fantastic lifestyle. As well as incredible value for money for home buyers, the region has great infrastructure and amenities.

Typically, people who are coming to Masterton are saying that they feel refreshed and reinvigorated, he says. Oh, and how about the traffic? Not a problem, so much so that you won’t even find any traffic lights in Wairarapa.

“Job prospects are really good, there is a shortage of skilled people here. Plus, for those people who work from home we already have ultra-fast broadband everywhere which is a problem in some other provinces.”

Flying High With Wings Over Wairarapa It’s a little under an hour from Masterton to Auckland in a T-6C Texan II. The trouble is, although the Royal New Zealand Air Force aircraft will be ˜ ying out of Masterton in February, it won’t be Auckland bound, nor for that matter will it be carrying passengers.

But from down on terra firma, tens of thousands of spectators are expected to look up at the newly formed Royal New Zealand Air Force Black Falcons, a feature of the Wings Over Wairarapa Air Festival 2017. Internationally renowned and the largest air show in the North Island, Wings will bring over 70 different aircraft to Masterton’s Hood Aerodrome for a weekend of on the ground and in the air entertainment. The biennial airshow, which runs on

alternate years to Warbirds Over Wanaka, is yet another example of the incredible variety of events on in the Wairarapa. Organisers are always looking at making the next Wings, bigger, brighter, bolder and noisier than the air festival before. Next year’s event, from 17-19 February, is no exception featuring the first ever night

show, on the Saturday. As well as a night flying programme, also lighting up the sky will be pyrotechnics launched from both on the ground and up in the air by the world famous UK Gliders, Aerosparx. Flying motor gliders, the British dare-devils perform aerobatics and are able

www.mymasterton.co.nz [

to deliver display smoke, and pyrotechnics. Aerosparx has won almost every international championship in glider aerobatics since its first flight in 1991. Hood Aerodrome is also home to one of the world’s largest collections of flying WWI aircraft. The Vintage Aviator’s outstanding collection of original, reproduction and replica aircraft of the Great War era regularly take to the skies, recreating aerial wartime history. They will again be a big part of the action during the Wings festival.

Interestingly, the Vintage Aviator is owned by movie mogul, Sir Peter Jackson, perhaps one of Masterton’s most famous residents. In addition to Wings, The Vintage Aviator run flying weekends every month throughout the operational season (November-April). For more information visit www.thevintageaviator.co.nz There is nothing vintage about the Black Falcons, which have replaced the former RNZAF display team, the Red Checkers, and will debut at Wings. Squadron Leader Brett

9 ] affordable country living

Clayton says the Black Falcons are midway through their work up season and are now linking all of the individual pilot flying components into the display. “. . . we’ve put in a considerable amount of work into designing a display sequence that shows the grace of the Texan and demonstrates it in its best light. It will be a thrilling display, a contrast of power and noise equalled by polished aerobatics.” For more information visit wings.org.nz

Publisher strikes the right chord Publisher to some of the biggest names in music - David Hedley It seems ironic that the very thing that was going to inadvertently kill off books, has in fact proven to be something of a saviour. At least, that is how Masterton bookseller and publisher David Hedley views the digital revolution. Another oddity is how David has carved out a career as a specialist publisher to some of the biggest names in music, while basing himself in provincial New Zealand. Yes, that’s right, global pop stars like, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Bill Wyman, Spencer Davis, Jeff Beck, and more recently Fleetwood Mac. He has rubbed shoulders with them all, and to some become a trusted friend, all the time while remaining domiciled in Masterton, Wairarapa. Key to doing business and forging publishing deals is building relationships, not where you live, he says. Sure,

there is no substitute for meeting people face-to-face, but no matter where you live in New Zealand it still requires a long-haul flight overseas. “It means a bit of extra travel getting to Wellington to catch a flight to Auckland . . . but that is all. It forces you to plan your life better,” he says. Time zones are the same whether you live in Auckland or Ashhurst. If a client is in London or Los Angeles there is no avoiding telephone calls in the dead of the night. It can be “hard work”, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Remaining in Masterton affords him the opportunity to have the best of both worlds. Away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, and surrounded by clean air and striking scenery, you are in a “better space” to make good decisions, he says. The region is a “wonderful place to raise children”. He and wife Jenny have three, all of whom are successful in their own right, one as an author and another who is also working in publishing based in Sydney. His store, Hedleys Books, in the centre of Masterton, is one of the few independent booksellers left in New Zealand and has been family run since 1907. While the digital age has brought with it challenges, such as E-books and Kindle,

in a strange kind of way it has also strengthened his business. “For a period there we [book stores] were in free fall and I was pretty despondent for a couple of years,” David recalls. “Then we embraced technology and ironically the efficiencies around the digital age began to really help us.” In particular it has been a boon for doing international business, doubly so given that most people that David works with abroad have no idea where Masterton is, nor do they need to know. He started his relationship with music books in the 1970s after meeting UK publisher the late Brian Roylance of Genesis Publications, which specialises in beautifully produced rock photographic books. Roylance was good friends with George Harrison and David too became close to the former Beatle. Through Harrison he met Derek Taylor, the Beatles publicist. David has been involved in a string of publishing projects that have touched on the world of pop and rock and roll. His recent projects have included guitar legend Jeff Beck’s memoir, BECK01, and music icon, Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac. But it’s not all about music, another recent project was a book celebrating 100 years of the iconic fashion magazine Vogue, (Vogue: Voice Of A Century).

Music in the forest Kokako don’t need to parade their beauty up on the catwalk. While their hues of blue and grey make them a sight to behold, it is their magical sound that stops you in your tracks. At Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre, just 20-minutes north of Masterton, you can marvel at the kōkako’s beautiful, organ-like song as it fills the forest. In the early morning, a pair may sing a duet for up to an hour with other kōkako joining in to form a “bush choir”. In the Pukaha forest there are around 30-pairs making it one of the most populated areas in the country. Pretty impressive given that there is thought to be fewer than 3000 of these birds left.

If a tramp through the forest sounds like too much hard work, resident kōkako, Kahurangi, will prove just as captivating. Somewhat upstaged in recent years by the arrival of white kiwi Manukura, Kahurangi is still a star. As the only kōkako living in captivity this feathered entertainer craves attention, and just when you have had enough, she will reel you in with a wolf-whistle. It’s no wonder kōkako were put at the top of the tree in the 2016 Forest & Bird’s Bird

of the Year contest. With 80 per cent of New Zealand’s native birds classified as at risk or threatened, the kōkako breeding programme is one of a number of stunning successes at Pukaha Mt Bruce. Bringing our treasured native fauna - and flora - back from the brink of extinction is a massive challenge. Not only do conservationists have to win the war against predators, but also the hearts and minds of the general public. Remarkably, the

www.mymasterton.co.nz [

dedicated folk up at Pukaha Mount Bruce are achieving both. Visitors are able to experience some of our rarest species that cannot be viewed anywhere else on mainland New Zealand. See the antics of the kaka, our native parrot, aka the forest clown, watch enormous eels bathing in the

shallows and enjoy a peaceful walk in a primeval native forest. A new attraction at Pukaha Mount Bruce is a 40-by20 metre state of the art walk-through aviary which is proving to be a real crowd pleaser, according to Helen Tickner, General Manager of

Pukaha. Other highlights include: the Kiwi House and nursery where lives Manukura, the only white kiwi in captivity; guided tours and twilight tours; an interactive gallery that tells the story of the forest reserve.

Healthcare when you need it Masterton boasts some of the best health care in the country. Not bad for a province with one of the smallest populations. Wairarapa District Health Board (DHBs) is one of 20 DHBs in New Zealand responsible for providing or funding the provision of health care services in their district. Wairarapa is consistently one of the best performing DHBs as measured by the six national health targets. The purpose-built Wairarapa Hospital, located in Masterton, was opened in 2006 with capacity of up to 92 beds, covering all aspects of secondary health care. There is a Level 4 Emergency Department with associated High Dependency Unit, 24/7 access to CT, and 24-hour acute and elective care in general and orthopaedic surgery, medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, anaesthetics and paediatrics. Wairarapa Hospital is also well supported by

neighbouring hospitals in Wellington and Hutt Valley for tertiary services, as well as working closely with hospitals in Palmerston North. In addition, Selina Sutherland Private Hospital is on-site, meaning that patients don’t need to travel to Wellington for most medical procedures. The services covered at Selina Sutherland include orthopaedics, general surgery, gynaecology and endoscopy, with visiting services provided in urology, ophthalmology, and physician, minor operations, Mole Map NZ and ultrasound scans. Community-based services are another essential part of Wairarapa

DHB’s operations, and include public health, district nursing, midwifery care, physiotherapy, and a variety of outreach initiatives such as the Cardiac Outreach Programme and maraebased clinics for asthma and diabetes. Wairarapa DHB

has been selected to run the bowel screening programme in July 2017. Masterton is well served with medical centres, pharmacies and other health service

providers. There are also several well-established retirement villages in town offering residents a wide range of facilities for a secure and fulfilling retirement. Two of the villages – Lansdowne Park and Wairarapa Masonic Village – have their own hospitals.

Sun, sand, surf and . . . horse racing

The SCENIC: int Castlepo se and Lighthount as seen settleme at night.

With easy access to two of the best beaches in the country, the 45-minute drive from Masterton is well worth the effort. Castlepoint and Riversdale beaches are in every way quintessentially kiwi, but each with their own distinctive peculiarities. Despite only 20km, (as the crow flies), separating the two stretches of coastline, they could not be more contrasting. In fact, no slight on the water temperature, these neighbours are polar opposites. Castlepoint is rugged and rustic, Riversdale more orderly, so much so that the locals refer to it as a ‘resort’. There is plenty of healthy rivalry between the two communities as to which is best, but you be the judge. Both have picture-postcard beaches, a golf course, busy general stores and baches for sale that, unlike most parts of the country, are surprisingly affordable. The AA knows which one it prefers, two years ago ranking Castlepoint as one of New Zealand’s top 10 most loved beaches. Weighing in heavily

on the judges would have been the utterly spectacular landscape which provokes gasps of delight when people see the coastal settlement for the first time. Aboard his ship in 1770, Captain James Cook was struck by the remarkable fortress like rock jutting out of the land at the southern end of the exposed cliff face. Resembling a castle, from this Castlepoint took its name. A lighthouse stands tall on the northern point of the limestone reef and lagoon. Castlepoint is an all-year round destination with the ever-changing elements constantly altering the mood of the place. When an easterly belts in, the reef literally explodes into life holding off the pounding sea. Fishing, boating, surfing or just paddling in the shallows, Castlepoint offers everything that you would expect from a New Zealand beach, but there is more. The annual beach

horse races in March, which date back to 1872, make this beach like no other. Perhaps the most remarkable feature of Castlepoint, however, is the campground, located on the sand’s edge with elevated sites behind giving guests a million dollar view without the price tag. Further down the coast, and no longer with a campground, Riversdale has plenty in its favour. Sheltered and gently sloping, the beach is 4kms long and a fantastic spot for swimming, surfing and fishing. At low tide, a large area of rock is exposed at both ends of the bay, creating a natural playground for fishing and snorkeling. A reef two kilometres out to sea is a wellknown diving site.

Like Castlepoint, Riversdale has a relatively small resident population, but this swells in summer. The surf lifesaving club is very much the hub of the community over the busy holiday season. Much younger than Castlepoint, the Riversdale settlement has an interesting history. It was developed in the 1950s by champion Wairarapa swimmer, Basil Bodle, who knew that this part of the Wairarapa coast has consistently good surf and is sheltered by the natural barrier of the Tararua Ranges. At the time, people thought he was crazy, but oh how he has proven them wrong.

Be part of Masterton’s two wheel revolution If you’re looking for a complete contrast to the endless traffic congestion of Auckland, then Masterton is well worth a look because, for many folk, two wheels are often better than four. While Auckland has its beautiful harbour, perfect for sailing, Masterton has stunning countryside tailormade for pedal power. To say that riding a bike in Masterton is ‘wheelie’ good would be an under-statement. It’s so good the region hosts the country’s premier international cycling event and also a week-long festival dedicated to celebrating life on two wheels. Then there are the clubs and groups, trails, organised

tours and businesses that collectively are making the region ‘cycling central’.

may halt your progress on a rural highway.

If there’s one thing in cities that dissuades people from hopping on a bike, it is the traffic gridlock making cycling often extremely dangerous. It’s ironic, don’t you think, given that more cyclists on the road should in effect mean fewer motor vehicles.

Athletics and Cycling Masterton chairperson Sue Lyttle says on any given day you can ride for miles without coming across more than a handful of cars. It’s this, and the extraordinary landscape, which make cycling in the region so utterly rewarding, Mrs Lyttle says.

Gridlock is not a word you associate with Masterton roads, except on the odd occasion when a flock of sheep

Her club have a calendar chocker full of rides and events that cater for all ages and abilities.

For neighbouring Wellington, and even Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa is a magnet for keen cyclists who don their padded pants and load up the roof racks to head-on over for a weekend in the saddle. Even the operators of the Wellington-Masterson train link have got in on the act adding a designated carriage to the Wairarapa-line out of Wellington on Friday afternoons. There is money to be made in bikes – from rentals to mini tours – cycle tourism is flourishing. The flagship Rimutaka Cycle Trail offers an unforgettable ride that takes people through amazing scenery. New trails are either being opened up or are under construction. Many local riders have their favourite routes, all of which start and finish from their own front door. For many, cycling is becoming a way of

life and very much embeded in the Masterton psyche. All the glamour and colour of international cycle racing sweeps past many doorsteps and farm gates of the Wairarapa every year in late January, with the racing of the New Zealand Cycle Classic. Next year’s race, from 22-26 January, will be the 30th anniversary of the tour. Each year the Cycle Classic unearths new talent, and a number of riders have gone on to win stages in the Tour de France, the Tour of Italy and World Championships among others. Running alongside the Cycle Classic is Huri Huri: Wairarapa’s Bike Festival. This seven-day event, running from 21-27 January, is another great opportunity for residents and tourists of all abilities and ages to get on their bikes, get active and join the two wheel revolution.
