Advertorial

New Zealand’s top road cyclists will race for the yellow jersey in the 35th UCI 2.2 New Zealand Cycle Classic. Over the years, this major sporting event has unearthed new talent and helped up-and-coming riders step onto a global platform. Top lead out rider Julian Dean, Chris Jenner, Robbie McEwen, Hayden Roulston and George Bennett have all claimed this yellow jersey while more recently Aussie Ben O’Connor, who won this Tour in 2016, went on to win a stage in the Tour de France. NEW ZEALAND Continued from page 13 and preparing for a busy 2022, including racing in February’s UAE Tour in the Middle East. “Early January is pretty early for me in terms of my racing season however it will be a great opportunity to test how my preseason training is going. While I am taking a relaxed approach to the NZ Cycle Classic, my objective is to race aggressively, get my heart rate up, work hard in my legs and if that achieves some great results either in the sprints, a stage win or overall, I’ll be happy,” says Bennett. Bennett is also looking forward to having a rare opportunity to ride alongside his good friends Archbold and Bewley. “Shane is most likely going to make an impact in the sprints while Sam will try and light the race up – having a crack at the break-aways,” says Bennett. Sandoval is also interested in seeing how the team’s younger riders go. Pithie, 19, has completed his first year with leading French professional team Groupama FDJ and

won the national criterium championship at 18, while White enjoyed his first extensive taste of European professional cycling with the Black Spoke Pro Cycling Academy. Sarah Blake, Cycling New Zealand’s High Performance Programme Lead says they are pleased to have assembled such a strong national team for this race which is an extremely important event on the cycling calendar. “Jorge has done a wonderful job retaining its UCI 2.2 status especially amid the covid pandemic and we will continue to do our best to support it. It is a fantastic opportunity for developing riders and cycling fans to see some WorldTour professionals racing back home.” Cycling New Zealand also has a second development team competing comprising Fruzio ILABB team rider Sam Ritchie, joined by fellow former mountain bikers Caleb Bottcher and Adam Francis, along with Alex Williams and Kiaan Watts, who are both with the Global 6 Cycling Academy for 2022.

this event and allow full sanctioning status and official UCI points to be given to riders, without the mandatory number of international teams competing because of border restrictions.”

Despite covid-19 restrictions preventing international riders from competing in this week’s New Zealand Cycle Classic, there is plenty of interest.

In addition, the Tour will be held under the new covid-19 protection framework or traffic light system with strict health and safety protocols in place. For spectators, Sandoval is urging people to wear a face mask, sign in where appropriate using the covid tracer app for contact tracing purposes and physical distance.

Wairarapa will host the first Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)sanctioned road cycling event in the world this week and race director Jorge Sandoval can’t wait. Even though covid-19 has prevented any international riders from competing, Sandoval has assembled an outstanding line-up of 14 teams that feature New Zealand’s top road cyclists and exciting, emerging talent. “This is my 35th NZ Cycle Classic and despite all the issues we and the world have with covid-19 and all its variants, my team and I have worked hard to ensure this event is once again the premier multi-day road cycle race in New Zealand,” says Sandoval. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our top cyclists who have returned home from Europe this summer to keep their racing legs ticking over

while for our up-and-coming riders, taking part in a UCI event right here in our own country is an incredible opportunity.” Sandoval will welcome a who’s who of talent including national champion George Bennett, Tour of Southland winner Michael Vink, stage winner Regan Gough, Shane Archbold and renowned domestique rider Sam Bewley. They will join other riders and zoom through and around the townships of Masterton, Carterton and Martinborough as well as on roads that pass through rolling rural countryside, vineyards and olive groves. Over the years Sandoval’s event has developed an international reputation for unearthing new talent and helping up-and-coming riders step on to a bigger platform. “Top lead out rider Julian Dean, Chris Jenner, Robbie McEwen and Hayden Roulston all claimed the yellow jersey while many others have gone on to ride in the Tour de France, the Giro Italia and for

me that is very rewarding,” says Sandoval. “More recently we saw young Aussie Ben O’Connor, who won my Tour in 2016, take a stage in the Tour de France while Black Spoke stage winners Aaron Gate and Campbell Stewart rode at the Olympics with Campbell winning that amazing medal on the track that had everyone up and down the country screaming with delight as it was such an amazing ride.” Sandoval admits that in all his 35 years of running events, the past two tours have been challenging. “With covid-19, we don’t know what

This is a fantastic opportunity for our top cyclists who have returned home from Europe this summer to keep their racing legs ticking over... will happen from one day to the other …who will be in lockdown or who won’t be?” says Sandoval. “So many events have had to be cancelled so I consider myself lucky that I’ve been able to get a special dispensation from the UCI to hold

This extra level of planning comes on top of organising traffic management plans, setting stage routes, securing sponsors, and in recent times, working alongside fellow event organiser Catherine Rossiter-Stead to organise a series of fun, community-based events aimed at getting more people into the sport – at all levels and ages. The Trust House New Zealand Cycle Classic officially opens at 5.30pm on Wednesday, 5 January at Mitre 10 Mega Masterton with a 10km teams’ time event starting at 6pm. The following morning riders complete a 158km stage heading north of Masterton towards Eketahuna and back, before a

small hill climb has them finish outside the Masterton Golf Club in Lansdowne. The 127km stage three will have riders depart Masterton and head south to the pretty wine village of Martinborough while the 137.2km stage four – known as the Queen Stage – will test riders to their maximum with a new hilltop finish on Te Wharau Hill. The Tour concludes in Wellington city on Sunday with a fast-paced criterium around the inner-city streets of Lambton Quay. “Long-time Wellingtonians will fondly remember when the Tour was first held in Wellington in 1988 and then in 2011 when it was won by a young George Bennett,” says Sandoval. “Then last year we returned it to Wellington in what was the most exciting circuit race I’ve seen in years. Thanks to support by the Wellington City Council, we are returning to Wellington’s innercity streets for the fifth and final stage this year.” The 2022 NZ Cycle Classic can take place thanks to the generous support from Trust House, Mobile Communications Service, Wizwireless, Fagan Motors, Mitre 10 Mega Masterton, and Lion Foundation plus all three Wairarapa District Councils.

CYCLE CLASSIC

Jorge’s Picks New Zealand Cycle Classic Race Director Jorge Sandoval says expect the unexpected in this year’s five-stage tour. However when push comes to shove, his top four picks for the Yellow Jersey are: George Bennett New Zealand National Team Formidable hill climber, top professional with one of the best teams in the world, used to ride long, hilly stage races. If he is on form, I expect George to have a good ride on stage four and maybe taking the yellow jersey and the title that he already won in 2011.

Michael Vink Bolton Equities Black Spoke Pro Cycling Past tour winner and this year winner of Tour of Southland, one of the most experienced road rider in the tour. His form is good, and he is surrounded by decent, experienced tour riders who will support him the whole way. Bolton Equities Black

Spoke Pro Cycling being only the second UCI team in New Zealand have a point to prove and they really want to win the New Zealand Cycle Classic.

Ryan Christensen Bolton Equities Black Spoke Pro Cycling Even if he may have Michael Vink as team leader, Ryan is also a very experienced rider, doing most of his racing in Europe for the past four years, he is strong in the mountains, finished 8th place in the 2021 tour and could be the dark horse of the race.

Laurence Pithie New Zealand National Team Young rider but already shown in Europe what he is capable of in winning a stage race and having some very good placing in other races.

NEW ZEALAND CYCLE CLASSIC

The ins and outs of the NZ Cycle Classic

JAN 5-9 2022

Each team competing in the New Zealand Cycle Classic will have a clear strategy – whether it’s to win the overall tour title or claim a race jersey such as the King of the Mountains or leading U23 rider.

WAIRARAPA & WELLINGTON

Typically, their strategy will see the team working together to protect their lead rider and ensure they are in the best possible position at the end of a stage for a sprint finish. The lead into this can involve “drafting” which experts say can save from 20 to 40 per cent of a rider’s energy in a long event. The team may have a rider who sets the pace for everyone else. After a short stint in front of the main group or “peloton”, they’ll move back and let another rider take over. Team leaders tend to hang back in the bunch to conserve energy, while their teammates take turns out in front. More advanced strategy can come into play when someone tries to “break away” from the peloton. This “attack” or “break away” is a tactic used to try and split the field. An attack often prompts a “chase” which has members of the peloton switch to a higher speed and attempt to “close the gap” on the attacker. If the peloton decides not to chase, an individual might try to “bridge”, or chase on their own. If a rider or several riders surge ahead of everyone else, the

Rolling country roads are a feature of the NZ Cycle Classic

competitors may take on the burden of quickening the pace of the field. Or the teammates of the breakaway rider could attempt to “block” rivals from mounting a chase. Teams can also mount group attacks. In this case, one rider surges ahead and forces a rival team to lead a chase. As soon as the peloton catches up, another rider surges ahead. The goal is to tire out the opposing teams and soften them up for a run to the finish by the team leader. At the end of each stage, jerseys are awarded to the Tour Leader (yellow), Sprint Ace (green), King of the Mountain (white with red polka dots), Most Aggressive (orange) or U23 (white). These riders then wear that jersey in the next day’s race.
