Wairere WAIRARAPA
RAM
SALES 2019
Located in medium to steep hill country northeast of Masterton, Wairere has been breeding rams for 53 years. Operating in a challenging, winter wet and summer dry class one wind zone environment, Wairere produces sheep with strong constitution that are accustomed to mob stocking at high commercial stocking rates. Wairere winters an average of 750 kg of live weight per hectare. Wairere is the most recognised brand in sheep genetics in New Zealand, producing mainly Romney rams but also offers composites, terminal sires, facial eczema tolerant and fine woolled “smart sheep”. The motto of “Proven, Predictable and Profitable” captures the essence of what Wairere Rams achieve for those who use them. Rams have been bred at Wairere since 1967 when John Daniell began performance recording ewes on what was regarded as second class hill country.
John’s father Len, who had purchased Wairere from the original settler, John Rutherford, had been breeding rams at Akura on the outskirts of Masterton since 1929. Derek and Christine Daniell are the current owners and third generation of the family to operate the property. Throughout the generations, the Daniell family have displayed a passion for sheep breeding and have been pioneers and innovators in their farming and sheep breeding activities. Derek has been honoured for his significant contribution to the New Zealand sheep industry. The Wairere ram breeding flocks total some 7000 SIL recorded Romney ewes and a further 3000 Romney ewes in “multiplier” flocks.
born are sold as rams meaning that culling and selection pressures are intense. With all sheep at Wairere being mob stocked and rotationally grazed throughout the year, apart from lambing time, Wairere is a rigorous testing ground, ensuring that Wairere sheep have great “shifting ability” and a reputation for being able to recover condition rapidly after tough seasons. Key selection criteria include: • The requirement for all ewe hoggets retained to be scanned in-lamb, (this ensures early maturity and high fertility). • For adult sheep to perform without any drench and young sheep to thrive and grow under a minimal drenching regime.
The composite, terminal, facial eczema and smart wool flocks comprise a further 5000 ewes.
• All ewe hoggets have been mated in every year since 1966 andarelambedunshepherded.
The scale of the Wairere ram breeding flocks is an advantage that clients benefit from. It allows heavy culling of underperforming animals, both ewes and Rams.
• Selection for easy care lambing and against bearings has been applied since the flock was established in 1966.
Less than 25% of all ram lambs

Lamb survival is the secret Justin and Deanna McCarthy farm northwest of Taihape at Tiriraukawa. They run 2000 Wairere Romney ewes and 100 MA Angus cows. “Ten years ago we were topping out with 120% lambing and no lambs prime oš mum. Today we expect 150 to 155% survival to sale, with a weaning weight in the early thirties and up to 800 POM. This is set up by a very low 12.5% wastage from scanning. We are also mating our hoggets and lambing at 90% from mating with weaning weights similar to the MA ewes. All our ewes and hoggets are completely unshepherded. The ability of our ewes to lose weight during lambing and lactation and then bounce back always surprises me, especially at weaning, when most are back at mating weight.”

yield) and this measurement is included in the SIL index. • Wairere culls heavily for other “non-productive” traits that increase work. Dags, feet and poor structure are regarded as priorities for culling. • As members of the Wairarapa Romney Improvement Group, considerable effort has gone into improving the saleable meat yield of the Romney flock. With large scale progeny testing having been undertaken from 1994 until 2013. Wairere sells all Rams by private treaty and operates a “price bracket” system whereby clients choose the price they wish to pay and Wairere guarantee that all those purchasing at that price are treated equally, thus allowing the introduction of new clients without any disadvantage relative to existing and long term buyers. Two tooth Rams are sold in November and ram hoggets sold in February. Wairere Rams go to all corners of New Zealand and are now enjoying a growing market in Australia, UK and South America. With hundreds of satisfied clients, Wairere has the scale, passion and vision to ensure that they meet the needs of sheep producers now and into the future. FlockFinder app a handy tool for ÿ nding rams
Active healthy rams are essential for good fertilisation rates, especially for high ewe:ram ratios (100+:1).
FlockFinder – a smartphone app that identifies New Zealand ram-breeding flocks based on a user’s search criteria – can be downloaded at the Apple App Store, Google Play or beeflambnz.com
Inspect your present rams before ram buying to check the number of replacements needed and again eight weeks before mating.
FlockFinder users can search for ram breeders who are recording animal performance and conducting genetic evaluations using the powerful SIL genetic engine. Search can be on the basis of breed, geographical location, flock name, owner name or on traits being recorded. The app is helpful to both farmers and rural professionals supporting New Zealand’s sheep farming sector. At the click of the button, the FlockFinder app has explanations and definitions of common eBVs and indexes. Users can find breeders recording traits they are interested in. It is more likely for a breeder to be doing well in a trait they are recording. Users of the app can also delve deeper and ask breeders to
The ram – health inspections
supply their genetic trend graphs on these traits. On the FlockFinder App, you can see where are they located, how large their flocks are, and their contact details. FlockFinder works offline, once loaded. It does not require a continuous internet connection to perform further searches. The app also includes explanations of common breeding value terms. Simply tap on the “i” icon in the top right of the screen. FlockFinder has been developed by Beef + Lamb New Zealand Genetics.
A quick examination the day before putting the rams out leaves no time to cure health problems or find replacements. Ram preparation is important for good mating performance and sperm production which begins eight weeks before mating.
RAM PREPARATION Eight weeks before mating, check for: • Wounds and flystrike • Genital health problems such as epididymitis, scrotal mange, pizzle rot and penis abnormalities.
Isolate any rams with genital problems immediately to reduce the risk of infecting healthy rams. Get your veterinarian to inspect and blood test these rams. • Foot problems. Footrot and other lameness may reduce feed intake and hence sperm production, as well as reducing ram mobility during mating. Foot abscess will elevate body temperature and cause infertility for up to two months. Seek veterinary advice for treatment of genital problems or foot abscess. Sperm development takes eight weeks, so all sperm present at mating has developed prior to the mating period. Begin good feeding and exercise at least eight weeks pre-mating. Avoid shearing within eight weeks of mating. Source: Making Every Mating Count. Beef + Lamb NZ beeflambnz.com

Motu-nui Rams Motu-nui Rams is situated 42km east of Masterton at Whareama. Starting with John Le Grove in the late 70s, the stud has now over 40 years of performance recording. The foundation of the stud is Romney, and this is still our core business. In recent years we have also developed a crossbreeding programme, bringing in Texel, Coopworth and East Friesian genetics. Motu-nui now offer our own high performance maternal breed, branded the “mr”. We also sell terminal rams with South Suffolk and Sufftex genetics. We farm on harder hill country in an area known for its tough summer dry and wind! The ewes are put under a lot of pressure, which has produced a hardy type that shifts well to other areas of New Zealand. We have focused on selecting for ewe efficiency (weight of lambs weaned relative to
ewe mating weight) for over 15 years, as well as the NZ Maternal Worth index. The introduction of EID recording in the early 2000s has helped immensely with the accurate recording of this data. We are now investing in DNA testing to achieve faster, more accurate genetic gain, and have begun introducing FE resistance. Rest assured, we still cull heavily on structural features such as feet, dags and constitution, and yes, we still take an interest in the type of wool, leaning towards the finer end. We welcome anyone to come and have a look around and see for themselves what we are up to here at Motu-nui Rams. The ewes have excellent mothering ability. Tagged at birth, this is the best time to see Dam mothering progeny.
Once older they are often lambing within days of each other.
John and Stephanie are breeding smart sheep that choose good sheltered lambing sites.
“It feels almost criminal to inadvertently draft them off into separate mobs for set stocking.” The animals have excellent longevity, she says. “We really rate older ewes that just keep producing year-in-year out.” They are ideal ewes – structurally sound, medium framed, 65-70kg, condition score 3, weaning 33-35kg twin lambs.
Meldrum Romneys is located on rolling to steep hill country with a cold, wet and windy climate. John originally started breeding rams to select for animals that would suit and survive this environment. The farm presently has 2300 ewes, of which 850 are SIL recorded ewes and 1500 commercial. John and Stephanie fatten the bulk of the lambs through Atkins Ranch, with a Global Animal Partnership (GAP4) rated supply programme supplying into Whole Foods supermarkets in the United States.

1 0 6 y e a r s o f So u t h d o w n b r e e d i n g The McLachlan family has been breeding stud Southdown sheep since 1913, originally as the Willowpark Stud at Opaki and Pinegrove Stud at Rangitumau, before the current Lodge Stud was founded in 1939 by N S McLachlan, Lucy Thorneycroft’s grandfather. Rob and Lucy believe the early maturing nature of the breed, and therefore the ability to get lambs away early off their mothers, is the Southdown breed’s true strength. Southdowns first entered New Zealand in the early 1840s. The
modern Southdown line has been developed to combine the fast-maturing qualities of the original breed with a heavier carcass weight animal. The high meat yielding attributes of the Southdowns result in higher value lamb out the gate. The Lodge Stud is proud to offer structurally sound, well-muscled rams with good length, thickness and vigour. Rams are available from November. Enquiries are welcome anytime. Marlow Coopworths Facial eczema is caused by the ingestion of sporidesmin, a potent mycotoxin produced by the fungus Pithomyces chartarum that grows on dead leaf litter in the late summer and early autumn. This fungus requires 100% humidity and temperatures in the range on 10-30C for sporulation. These conditions have begun to appear in Wairarapa with resulting clinical and sub-clinical effects upon livestock. Sporidesmin primarily damages the liver, and it is this liver damage that gives rise to most of the production losses both short term and long term. But like an iceberg, much of the production loss and costs are hidden below the surface. These sub-clinical effects affect susceptible sheep flocks far more than farmers realise. If you have more dry ewes than you can explain, a lambing percentage that you don’t seem to be able to improve upon, too many ewes with dead lambs, ewes that run dry before weaning, hoggets that don’t seem to want to grow (even with plenty of feed), it is more than likely that subclinical FE is at the root of your problems.

If you plan to continue to farm sheep in this region as conditions become more conducive to FE, the only long-term solution is to build FE tolerance into your flock. Studs selling and advertising FE tolerant rams should be using AgResearch’s Ramguard service where top rams being considered for use as sires undergo a challenge of the sporidesmin toxin and only those that have a nil response to the toxin are used to breed sale rams. Many studs are claiming FE tolerance but Marlow Coopworths has attained FE Gold status.

New vaccine aims to improve farm returns The outlook is pretty good, for many the season has been better than average and prices are positive, albeit the latter was helped along a little by the swine crisis overseas. Upside is always nice to have but for longer term benefits continual improvements to stock performance and farm profitability are still key to sheep and beef farms in this region. When evaluating these new opportunities some changes will be simple while others more complex, the act of changing to this new vaccine is quite possibly one of the very simplest things you could do while it could help you reach your goals much faster. There are numerous reasons why you should you consider changing but for many farmers who have already moved, the key factor was that they were still seeing clostridia type deaths on their farms, even after vaccinating. We are not talking about huge numbers of animals at a time, instead it may be only 1 or 2, maybe 3 or 5 here and there. Sometimes these are seen as normal or expected losses, however there may be an opportunity to reduce them. There has been a wave of change since this new vaccine became available only 2 years ago. Lab tests on farms investigating unexpected deaths have shown the presence of these toxins in animals, further supported by anecdotal reports of farms reducing losses

after moving to the increased protection of 8 in 1 vaccine. The act of change is very simple, you vaccinate the same way, just a different brand on the flexipack and different vaccine inside it, 8 in 1 vaccine instead of traditional 5 in 1 vaccine. The cost to change is no longer a major factor for many sheep and beef farms. The calculation is simple, save half a lamb over 1000 lambs and you will have paid for the vaccine, saving the other half means you’ve already returned a profit, it is a lot less for cattle.
Animal losses from enterotoxaemia does not always cause large numbers to die all at once, small numbers frequently can add up to being much more significant and lost profit over a season. Most commonly it is encouraged by sudden changes in diet. This can be related to the type of feed, such as high power crops or newer breeds of grasses used, but it can also be related to the situation. Events when animals
change from a lack of feed to sudden high availability, such as break feeding, crops, even after extended time off feed due to drenching, dipping, crutching etc. Clostridial vaccines for sheep and cattle first became widely available over 40 years ago. Their invention was a breakthrough, allowing farms across the country to increase production and profitability. Today modern farming is faster moving and much more intensive which in turn is more suitable for clostridia pathogens to challenge your stock. Production and management changes have taken place, a change to Coglavax8 8 in 1 in response to this demand for more comprehensive protection is an ideal option. Widespread in New Zealand clostridial disease can affect any farm. Surprisingly even with its availability and relatively low cost many farms still do not have a complete vaccination programme. Partial vaccination will not fully protect stock, following a programme can lower the impact of these unwanted deaths. Vaccination remains one of the best relatively low cost inputs a farm can add and be easily fitted in with normal stock handling. The new 8 in 1 vaccine, Coglavax8, is a vaccine that
delivers cover against the 8 pathogens. If you are still using 5 in 1 then the new 8 in 1 vaccine could be an option for you, delivering protection against an additional 3 pathogens that will only cost you a few cents a dose. A complete vaccination programme with the right vaccine will provide you with the best protection in times of high challenge, including the use of crops, break feeding, after yarding, exposure to soil, and feed transition. Unexpected deaths can still occur on many farms that vaccinate. Often only sporadic and one or two at a time so it may be accepted as normal losses, but it is often your best animals and could be prevented. Over a full year these losses will eat away at your profits so if you haven’t reviewed your vaccination programme we suggest this should be a priority. It is also worth noting a new 8 in 1 vaccine, protecting against 3 more than 5 in 1, for only a few cents extra per dose. Unexplained and sudden deaths of sheep and cattle are still apparent and very frustrating. Coglavax8 is only available through a veterinary clinic. Contact your vet for the best advice and widest vaccine range, they will be able to help you with a vaccination programme that will help to deliver the best gains for your farm.

Our focus changed to incorporate new challenges in sheep farming. We have been worm tolerance testing our stud flock since 1994 and now test both ewe and ram lambs every February.

the commercial flock health and ewe deaths are not common. We started facial ecezma tolerance testing eight years ago. This year we will dose at .45. We are producing sheep with worm tolerance – testing for 26 years and are now FEC Gold – fertility, survivability, wool, muscling and meat yield.

RAM
Mark and Lorraine Illston, owners and operators of Minda Hills Genetics, put large emphasis on breeding facial eczema (FE) tolerant rams, while maintaining high production and strong constitution. Minda Hills is a 320 hectare hill country property north-west of Taihape, running a fully recorded SIL flock of 2000 ewes and hoggets.

FE was again a major issue in some areas late last season, something the Illstons highlighted a decade ago as an increasing issue on more New Zealand farms. Genetics are the best way to gain permanent FE tolerance therefore comprehensive FE testing has been performed annually on their Perendale-based flock since 2012. Perendales are renowned for their survivability and general hardiness, making them well suited to hill country farming. Their mobility definitely helps stock movement. The combination of FE from the Romney, meat yield from the Texel and reproductive traits from the Finn, bred over the Perendale make this sheep a powerful and profitable package for their clients. Great importance is placed

Te Whangai The breeding philosophy at Te Whangai is very clear. We believe that for commercial farmers to run an ever increasingly more efficient and profitable business they must focus on continuously getting more for less, i.e. more production from less input. Our selection programme works on that principal. To make genetic progress, selection must take place in an environment which puts pressure on the traits you want to improve.
those developed where feed is plentiful.
under a summer/autumn internal parasite challenge.
TRAITS IN FOCUS
Consistent with our philosophy, this selection must take place in a known parasite challenging environment.
From 1970, the immediate focus was to lift fertility and develop an easy care animal. This was the same for most modern breeding groups. By the early 1990s the average “number of lambs born” to the recorded ewes was over 190% as only twinning two tooths were retained. Fertility, survival and milking ability were strongly entrenched in the flock. The 1990s was the beginning of a new and big effort to select sheep that would continue to grow while
With the side sampling information we can assist you to lower your micron count and target higher value per kg. Longevity has always been a focus.
A comprehensive programme developed by AgResearch has been in place for 25 years and involves regular weighings of undrenched hoggets through the autumn.
It is more efficient to carry a high producing older ewe than extra ewe hoggets and also allows heavier culling of replacements. Recorded ewes are not culled for age, rather just production.
Wool weight still plays an important part in our sire selection and all ram hoggets are side sampled, with the long term aim of being able to put a true value on the key processing attributes of bulk, micron, colour and yield.
We are embarking on a programme to incorporate FE tolerance into our genetic offering while still retaining the key attributes of the Te Whangai flock.
Giraffe would never have evolved with long necks if there wasn’t a shortage of low hanging food! It is clear that a different type of sheep has developed with selection for growth traits while feed is always at a premium than
