FIELDAY SPECIAL ON NISSAN NAVARA AT SOUTHEY NISSAN
Since its launch in August 2015, the Nissan Navara has been acclaimed as one of the world’s leading new utes.
Southey Nissan is offering a Fielday special lending rate on the Navara of 1.9% interest with no deposit up to 48 months. The Navara has been earning excellent reviews since its launch. New Zealand’s Autocar magazine highlighted that modern utes are viewed by Kiwis as ideal vehicles for family week day and weekend purposes and workhorses alike. The British version of Autocar said, “we’re not going to beat around the bush. The Nissan Navara has the best ride comfort of any unladen pick-up we’ve experienced”. Later in the review, Autocar pointed out that “despite this, the NP300 is still more than capable off-road, the Navara is far more comfortable than its competition, and yet is still able to carry or tow big
loads. Therefore if you are in the market for a new ute, this is the one to go for”.
A completely new design from Nissan, the Navara is available in 2WD & 4WD, single or twin turbo, narrow or wide body options. Fuel economy is also very good at 6.9 litres per 100km, it can tow up to 3.5 tonne, and has a seamless delivery of extra power with no turbo lag whatsoever. Roger Southey founded Southey’s Auto World Ltd in 1976 and has been serving Wairarapa since then, with the business still located on the corner of Park and Dixon Streets, Masterton. Southey’s, also known as Southey Honda and Nissan, are proud suppliers of the Honda brand for 30 years this year and also the Nissan brand since 1993. Southey’s is your one-stop shop for new and used vehicle sales, parts and service.

GV ELECTRICAL & PUMPING LTD
PIRINOA FARMER MICHAEL WARREN BESIDE ONE OF THE POST AND GUN SPRINKLERS
PIRINOA FARMER FIRST IN WAIRARAPA TO MOVE TO AUTOMATED FIXED POST IRRIGATION Michael Warren, a sheep & beef farmer at Pirinoa, has become the first Wairarapa farmer to install a large-scale automated fixed post sprinkler system. Michael chose the system, which is common in the South Island, after thoroughly investigating the advantages it offered his farm over other systems. “Our first pivot covered the easy ground, then we installed a part circle pivot on what was left of the flat ground. That still left a lot of the farm without irrigation,” Michael says. “There aren’t a lot of options out there suited to the ‘little and often’ style of irrigation this type of country requires and the ones that are usually require a fair bit of staff time. The fixed sprinkler option solved both these issues for us.” Gordon Mouldey, GV Electrical’s General Manager and Lead Designer, points out that this option can be used seamlessly with pivot systems, irrigating the areas pivots miss because of the circular pattern they generally follow. Turanganui is located in a low rainfall area
of South Wairarapa where Michael runs a sheep stud and finishing unit as well as some beef and cropping. Michael wanted an irrigation system that would work alongside his existing pivot irrigation system and maximise the value of the limited water resources available.
a total of 47 hectares over the course of the day. The pivot and sprinkler systems can run both independently and simultaneously. “People call them fixed sprinklers,” Michael says “but they’re really water canons with the amount they put out.” Gordon says Turanganui is an excellent example of how automated post irrigation can be used.
Fixed post irrigation is more efficient than the conventional pod lines or long lateral systems
“Fixed post irrigation is more efficient than the conventional pod lines or long lateral systems; applying water as efficiently as any Pivot system. The system applies a light application of water daily, with little escaping into the ground or evaporating as almost all of it gets taken up by the plant.
The system comprises more than 240 evenly spaced posts, each with a gun sprinkler, solenoid control valve and a small radio module that receives scheduling information from a central control system on a computer.
“Secondly, the system is almost completely automatic. This allows farmers to use their existing staff for farm work other than the shifting of equipment. With them being fully allocated to other work, the farmer doesn’t have to then employ extra staff because of irrigation requirements.”
The system is programmed to operate one sprinkler at a time per block, covering
repair costs as the system is never moved and it is designed so that livestock can’t damage it. Another big advantage is that no changes are needed to the infrastructure on the farm, Gordon says. “It fits into the existing physical attributes of the farm. You don’t have to remove shelter belts or move fences, tracks or even buildings. Each system is designed to fit the client. We don’t want to change what the farmer does, but enhance it.” Automated Post Irrigation is worth considering for both new irrigation projects, and the replacement or upgrading of old systems.

The Solway store, at the corner of Ngaumutawa Road and High Street, will be approximately 4000 square metres in size. “We already have a great range of rural products but with a much larger premises the new store will significantly expand what we can offer to rural and DIY customers.” Tumu ITM has grown from nothing to the largest building merchant supplier to the trade in Wairarapa in just 10 years. Today the store is involved in all aspects of building other than electrical with products and services from roofs, windows and concrete to scaffolding and even port-a-loo hire. As importantly, it employs staff with a thorough knowledge of its building and building products. The staff have the added incentive of earning a percentage of the store’s profits on top of their wages. “The biggest difference with Tumu ITM,” says Manager Corrie James, “is that we can stock the product of any manufacturer. This allows us to stock whatever product we think is best for our customers.”

Tumu ITM stocks the products of Wairarapa manufacturers wherever possible and also supports two Wairarapa charities - Wairarapa Sports Education Trust which gives grants to local promising sportspeople, and pet protection organisation Pet Animal Welfare Service Wairarapa (PAWS). Tumu ITM has kept the building of its new store local too, inviting three local companies to tender for its construction. It is looking to appoint a local café provider to operate at the new store as an additional service for its customers and passers-by of the high profile site.

He previously owned his own construction company which built homes in Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay and Palmerston North. Bill grew up in Manawatu, moving to Masterton well over 30 years ago. “I love the place”. Today Bill is Sales Accounts Manager for the store, an important role given around 90 per cent of its clients are trade related businesses. Bill believes providing excellent service has been important to the success of the Masterton store. “Price is not always what sales are based on. Service is a big part of it and sometimes more important than price.
BILL CARTER CELEBRATES A DECADE WITH TUMU ITM

STIHL SHOP GREYTOWN
PROUDLY LOCAL Owen and Jennifer Martin have owned the Stihl Shop in Greytown for around seven years now and have loved every minute. Owen had worked within the Stihl Store network before opening his own Stihl store and has an extensive background in repairs. “I enjoy the challenge of having my own business and love what Stihl stands for,” he says. The Greytown store is at the South end of the main highway in Greytown and has everything you would expect to find in a Stihl Shop. Owen’s service & repairs department has a particularly good reputation. As well as chainsaws, lawn mowers and hire equipment the Greytown store also has a range of bikes, scooters and barbeques. Owen and Jennifer have a lifestyle property of their own which their kids thoroughly enjoy running amok on. Owen has a strong rural background with his mum’s side of the family in dairy farming and his brother managing a farm. He is humble about his own lifestyle property however, admitting only to having “a few cows”. “We love being part of a rural community here in South Wairarapa,” says Owen.
“The people here are really genuine folk. Good people who are community-driven and hard working”. Owen’s affinity and understanding of rural life is clear as he goes on to add that while it’s been a tough past few years for farmers, it’s great to see a more promising future on the horizon again. The Stihl Shop Greytown team are a friendly bunch and thanks to that great level of service and commitment they’ve collected several awards over the past years. Recently they were selected as a regional finalist in the Retail NZ Top Shop awards. “We’re particularly proud of this award because it’s our customers who put us forward for it. So it means we must be doing a good job - it’s great to get the recognition for that from our customers”, says Owen. Owen will be off to Wellington in a few weeks for the regional finals, and if successful there, they will have the chance to compete against the best of the best in Auckland at the national finals. Located on the corner of Renall Street and Ngaumutawa Road in Masterton, Western Auto Mart has been specialising in wheel and tyre replacement and repair for a quarter of a century.
THE PERSONALISED APPROACH Crighton ITM in Greytown is the perfect example of why it makes sense to deal with a local business. Family-owned, Crighton ITM goes back 74 years. Being a smaller family-owned business means that Crighton ITM isn’t as ‘rulesbound’ or locked into procedure as some of the bigger timber merchants says Chris James. “Because we are smaller, we’re able to be flexible and make decisions on the run to help our customers out”. The Crighton ITM team are all about personalised service. “It sounds cheesy but it’s true that we know our customers by name. You deal with the same person each time so our customers become friends. In turn, that helps us meet our customers needs,” says Chris. “We love a bit of banter with our regular customers – who are often from the rural community. We know whether they play rugby or soccer and which school their kids go to. We care about our customers
and how they – and their families – are doing”. Chris goes on to say that’s the nice thing about being a local business in a small town – you say hi to everyone on the street and feel part of a community. It also means that the teams at Crighton ITM always make sure not only that they keep their promises such as delivering on time, but they also go the extra mile wherever they can.
It has access to most brands with tyres priced from the bottom of the range to the top, to suit all budgets. Western Auto Mart stocks three premier brands - BF Goodrich, Michelin and Toyo, as well as Nankang, Yokohama and other recognised fitments.
Michelin has been using leading silicon technology to develop superior tyres which last longer, save fuel and are better for the environment, commonly known as the energy tyre. We can also nitrogen fill your tyres for better fuel consumption, reduced tyre wear and improved ride and comfort. Jeremy says that his team members get just as excited as their customers do when they find the perfect tool they need, saying “They genuinely love helping our customers. For example, they seem to have just as much fun watching our customers having fun trying out the ride-on lawn mowers.” Stihl Shop Masterton have numerous awards to their name after more than 10 years in business. in England, eventually becoming horticultural service manager, overseeing 18 branches in the south-east of England.
To make the experience easier on the pocket, John Robinson of TLC Services in Carterton is offering a 10 per cent discount.
Today John and wife Jacqui run TLC right in the heart of Carterton’s shopping centre, selling, servicing and repairing small tractors, lawn mowers and chainsaws, plus a range of other agricultural and gardening machinery and tools such as blow vacs, log splitters and cultivators.
Lawn mowers, ride-on mowers and chainsaws need to be serviced once a year, John points out, with a regular service preventing damage and extending the life of the machine. “I have seen two ride-on mowers in the last month with the same problem - their engines had seized up because of a lack of oil. Both had oil leaks that would have been picked up with a regular service check.” The service check includes cleaning spark plugs, air filters and fuel filters, an oil change and sharpening blades. “Every year you need to do an oil change. The small amount of oil in engine does an awful lot of work.” John became an apprentice engineer at 16 for a regional agricultural company
Also in stock are safety goggles and helmets and gardening tools like gloves, hoses and watering cans. Among the brands TLC Services sells are Oleo Mac, Shindaiwa, Echo, McCulloch, Stiga, Masport, Lawnmaster, Morrison and Sanli. It is the exclusive supplier of Victa in Wairarapa. Collection and delivery, free of charge in most cases, is available from Masterton to Featherston, and onsite repairs can be arranged. DRIVER TRAINING AND CERTIFIED SPREADMARK TESTING Jim Laird of Jim Laird Driver Training Ltd is one of Wairarapa’s most experienced course providers for driver licences, endorsements and assessment services. Jim is also a Certified Spreadmark Tester, calibrating fertilising spreading equipment on the ground and in the air for maximum accuracy and effectiveness. He has over 40 years experience in the transport industry, and 15 years as an accredited licence tester, tutoring literally thousands of people over that time. His clients include both individuals who want to gain a particular licence, and businesses requiring staff to be trained so they can use specific vehicles or equipment. Along with courses for the popular Heavy Vehicle Class Two to Five, Jim offers training for numerous other qualifications including driving forklifts and operating heavy machinery such as front-end loaders, excavators and road rollers. Jim teaches the skills to transport dangerous goods like acid, fuel and flammable products, an area which is heavily enforced these days. He also trains for trailer licence, passenger vehicle licence and vehicle recovery. All these courses are completed in one day with the theory covered in a fully equipped classroom. The practical exams are done in vehicles provided by the
applicant or hired when necessary. The courses are completed to a schedule to suit the clients and Jim often travels to other locations to deliver his training. Jim has built strong relationships with many transport companies and firms that use heavy machinery, gaining a reputation for offering quality training that fully prepares students for the real world. Jim is presently doing a lot of Elevated Work Platform training for Scissor Lift, Knuckle Boom Crane, Cherry Picker etc. Training in these areas is becoming hugely important to meet the new Worksafe New Zealand safety standards requirements. One of the reasons his tutoring is so effective, Jim believes, is because of the amount of time he has worked in the industry himself. He also makes the courses as user-friendly as possible. There is still a shortage of qualified truck and machinery operators, with lots of overtime opportunities, Jim says. Having the right sort of transport or machinery licence offers a variety of employment options. Jim hugely appreciates “the terrific support I have had from local transport and contractor businesses utilising my business and the general public who have trained with me.”

SOUTH WAIRARAPA VETS
BLAIR STEVENS OF NZR
EQUINE VETERINARIAN KATIE GRANT IN THE LAB AT THE MASTERTON CLINIC
NEW TECHNOLOGY BRINGS INSTANT RESULTS FOR SOUTH WAIRARAPA VETS A major investment in state-of-the-art technology has enabled South Wairarapa Veterinary Services to make an instant diagnosis on the sick animals in their care, allowing vital treatment to begin with virtually no delay. New laboratory suites have been installed in all four of their clinics, Masterton, Carterton, Featherston and Martinborough, allowing laboratory standard analysis to take place for blood, urine, and other fluid samples for dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, horses, alpaca and even birds. These results are available within minutes of the sample being collected and ensures that Wairarapa’s farmers, horse and pet owners receive a fast, accurate assessment of their animal’s problem. Vet Katie Grant says the new technology is already making a huge difference to the level of service on offer. “In the past we have sent the samples off to Palmerston North, which means that the quickest we can get results back if we send them on the 10.30am courier is 6pm that night. That’s a major delay if you’ve got a really sick animal, and you can’t start treatment until you know exactly what’s going on,”
she explains. “With our new machines we can get results within minutes and can start treating straight away which is a huge benefit, especially with the really sick animals. For the customer, the turnaround time is so much better, the cost is exactly the same, and the animals get better treatment. We don’t have to start prescribing drugs hoping that they’re on the right medication: it’s more targeted, effective and efficient, so it’s better medicine all round. “Our machines are the same as they use in commercial labs and we can utilise them for issues on the farm such as downer cows. When cows are down it’s really difficult to know what supplement or medication they need. Once we test the blood we know straight away that it needs calcium or magnesium for example.” South Wairarapa Veterinary Services has also invested in digital radiology in Featherston and Martinborough, meaning all four of their clinics will have access to high quality digital radiology on site. Each site backs up the x-ray studies to the cloud, meaning they can be viewed and shared from anywhere by their vets.

Power Farming is pleased to announce the arrival of the new Maschio Presto Disc Harrow. It has been designed to meet the need for a semi-mounted, light yet intensive harrow of 4m to 6m. Maschio has designed the Presto to prepare a shallow seedbed of up to 10 cm deep in a wide variety of conditions, from sprayed out pasture, to stubbles after harvest and paddocks after winter crops have been grazed or harvested, all at high speeds. Product Specialist John Chapman of Power Farming commented,”The Presto does a number of things very well. The angle discs prepare a smooth and uniform seedbed with no corrugation remaining at working depth, the Agri Life hubs enable the discs to run smoothly with minimum maintenance, the central hinge of the sub frame allows excellent contouring and roller options make the Presto versatile enough for all soil types. The wide spacing of 620 mm between the rows prevents any soil and crop clogging. Agri Life hubs on each disc are a super sealed life long, genuine SKF bearing, lubricated in an oil bath. Their sealed nature leads to minimum maintenance being required. Maschio has used a silent block system which links each disc element to the frame with four rubber dampeners. These absorb vertical stresses and require no extra servicing whilst adding to the life of the machine. The Presto is built to meet the needs of medium to large farms, and tractors of 150 to 240 hp. It operates at fast speeds and a high hourly working capacity can be achieved making it an economical machine to own and operate. The Maschio Presto is available for the winter tillage season.

SELLAR & SELLAR
SELLAR & SELLAR CELEBRATES CLARE JACOBSON AS AN ASSOCIATE Sellar & Sellar is proud to announce that Clare Jacobson BBS CA is now an Associate of the Masterton chartered accountancy firm. Clare joined Sellar & Sellar in 2005 and is a popular member of the team, especially among her many rural clients. After her college years Clare travelled overseas spending 10 years in Britain where working for the then Coca Cola Trading Company Limited was a highlight, counter trading between East European countries and the UK. Upon her return to New Zealand, Clare settled in Wairarapa where she worked for a joinery firm in Carterton for eight years while studying towards further accounting qualifications. This was followed by two years at another Masterton accountancy firm before Clare joined Sellar & Sellar.
Sellar & Sellar - providing more than just accounting software to Eketahuna Country Meats Sellar & Sellar Principal Graeme Bayliss has recently been working with Eketahuna Country Meats, establishing a win-win relationship. Steve and Pip Olds returned to New Zealand in 2006 after doing their OE and bought a bare piece of land in Eketahuna, relocated a house and now farm angus cattle, red deer, romney ewes and fatten lambs, along with some free range chooks.
Principal Dominic Stewart says Clare “has the most amazing sense of loyalty and commitment to her clients. We wanted to offer the position of Associate as an acknowledgement of that effort.” Principal Graeme Bayliss notes that “all parties involved are desirous of sending the message that Clare’s Associateship gives continuity and excellence of service. This is paramount to our firm and evidences the vision and goals of the entire Sellar & Sellar team”.
The firm has a broad knowledge base and access to outside industry experts where required, which allows it to work with clients right across the agricultural spectrum from large farms to niche businesses like Eketahuna Country Meats.
This year they raised the support bar by becoming a founding Community Sponsor. As a Community Sponsor they cover the cost of six life-saving missions per year – an increase from one mission annually as a Community Partner.
Areas important to Eketahuna Country Meats where Sellar & Sellar has been able to help include structure of entities, succession planning and interpretation of financial advice - none of which are obtainable from new accounting software.
For every mission, Life Flight must raise an average of $2500, says Life Flight Partnerships & Development Manager Sherry Herrick.
Recent accelerated development to accounting software makes information more immediate but the extra layer of professional interpretation, business nous and expertise provided by Sellar & Sellar is the icing on the cake for Eketahuna Country Meats.
Clare is pleased to be a member of an accounting practice that has a long association with the rural sector. The firm was established in 1884 and since then has provided welcome advice to generations of businesses and local farming families. To this day, around 80 per cent of Sellar & Sellar’s clients are rural including the majority of Clare’s. “I enjoy the rural sector. There’s always something happening and every day is different. My clients are what I love most about accounting. If they are in my fold, they are part of the family. To me that’s what makes this job exciting - it’s about relationships.”
CLARE JACOBSON (LEFT) WORKS WITH RECEPTIONIST EXTRAORDINAIRE, NICOLA HANNAH
Lifesaving missions funded by Sellar & Sellar After having supported Life Flight for several years, Sellar & Sellar formalised and continued their commitment by joining a group of founding Community Partners in 2013.
Nearly 250 people in Wairarapa were helped by Life Flight last year. On average, every six hours someone, somewhere urgently needs Life Flight’s help. The charity relies on community support from individuals and from businesses such as Sellar & Sellar to continue flying.
STEVE & PIP OLDS WITH CHILDREN ISABELLE (6), JAMES (8) AND GUY (3) Both Steve and Pip grew up on farms and as producers wanted a greater connection with the families and individuals who buy their end products. So they developed their own business Eketahuna Country Meats - to sell direct to their customers. Steve and Pip feel that Sellar & Sellar is doing a great job providing advice and data as needed. Pip enjoys the relationship noting that her family has had a long history with Sellar & Sellar.

DAYTECH ENGINEERING
MASSONS
THE NEW CREEK AND STREAM CLEARING BLADE ON DISPLAY AT FIELDAYS
THE LATEST INNOVATION FROM DAYTECH Daytech Engineering has just added a ground breaking new product to its suite of agricultural products designed with Wairarapa farmers in mind. The Lincoln Road, Masterton business launched its new long-reach, fold-out blade - designed for cleaning creeks and streams - at National Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek this month. With a reach of five and half metres, the blade offers a solution for farmers whose creeks are clogging up and prone to flooding, now that stock can’t get to them, says Daytech founder Stuart Day. “The concept was used way back in the 1950s and 1960s but only behind small tractors and they couldn’t clear a fence. This offers an alternative method for clearing creeks to spraying them with chemicals which is more economical as well as more environmentally friendly.” Stuart received a lot of interest in the product at Fieldays. There was also a lot of interest and good sales for Daytech’s bale feeders which are designed to be towed behind very small tractors, 4 wheel quad bikes and side-by-sides. Another popular product is Daytech’s very robust flat deck trailers, and the company has now started building decks for Holden utes. Daytech offers a whole raft of products for farmers which can be viewed at
www.daytech.co.nz. Some of these are completely original while others are improvements on existing designs. Stuart grew up on his family’s farm at Gladstone and first became involved in engineering when he worked at Donald’s Press in Masterton, developing his skills further when living in South Africa where he met his wife Jill, before returning to Wairarapa. Among Daytech’s other products are pressing compactors, bagging presses, tubulators, sheep conveyors, wood splitters, stock loading races and grain feeders. Daytech products are being used all around New Zealand as well as Britain and Australia. Two pressing compactors are being used at Scott Base in Antarctica for rubbish, while other presses have been sold to Pakistan for waste cotton. Presses for wood shavings are being sold in both Australia and New Zealand. Daytech’s biggest single job has been designing and building a portable feed loading system for a livestock carrying ship built in China for a European company. Daytech is also available for all general agricultural engineering work required by farmers.

AMALGAMATED HELICOPTERS NZ LTD
Amalgamated Helicopters recently took delivery of an MD600N from Alabama in the United States. Bigger and more powerful than its two other helicopters, it will be based in Wairarapa and available to service the lower North Island. As well as being one of the fastest helicopters in New Zealand with a top speed of 282km/h, the aircraft can carry significantly heavier loads.
It is one of only two MD600N’s being operated in New Zealand and will add to Amalgamated Helicopters’ capacity to respond to Search & Rescue, Civil Defence Emergencies and Firefighting. The aircraft can comfortably carry up to seven passengers and has the NOTAR system (no tail rotor) which enhances safety and reduces its noise signature.
Now fitted with spray equipment, the 600N is a boost for farmers, with a bigger pay load which means less round trips and cheaper for those spraying and fertiliser jobs.
With two Hughes 500E’s and the 600N, add in the depth of highly trained professional and experienced pilots, Amalgamated Helicopters looks forward to continuing to service the Wairarapa and Greater Wellington Region.
This winter it will be ideal for porina, thistles, blackberry, tauhini and gorse, as well as insects and weeds in winter feed.

IRRIGATION SERVICES (WAIRARAPA) LTD
JOLLY POND IN CENTRAL OTAGO WAS LINED BY I.S. DAM LINING IN 2016
WATER STORAGE KEY TO MINIMISING RISK Building your own water storage pond gives surety of income and increases the value of agricultural businesses, Irrigation Services Managing Director Adrian Mannering says. Much has been said about the Government’s proposal to make 90 per cent of rivers swimmable by 2040, but it is clear increased focus will fall on water quality and perceived threats to that quality. Water for farming and horticulture is no longer a right, and careful planning is needed to make a robust business plan. Wairarapa, like Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay, are experiencing a squeeze on water permitting. Regional council plan changes have in some areas greatly restricted farmers’ and growers’ ability to run their businesses. “We will continue to see minimum flows in rivers lifted, and a squeezing up of permitted takes,” Adrian says. Regional councils in these areas look favourably toward storage of off-peak water. Water storage ponds fill in the winter when water is plentiful, to be used over the drier summer months to irrigate their crops or pasture. Adrian says there are some good examples of how water storage can create
opportunity for a sound business model. Delegat Ltd developed two large dams of 230 meg at Crownthorpe in Hawke’s Bay 15 years ago, an area with restricted water to irrigate their 300 hectare vineyard. “We calculated the amount of storage required for when the Ngaruroro River take was turned off in times of low flow. It has really come into its own in drought years, ensuring consistent water to allow consistent yields and quality.” Delegat are in the process of building a second dam at Crownthorpe, a 300 meg dam, to enable further grape developments. “Earthworks are commencing and we expect to line this dam by the end of July.” Adrian says farmers and growers can “cut the cloth to suit” with the development of water storage. Carterton farmer Shaun Rose, at his Rosalea dairy farm, built a water storage pond to tide him over when his irrigation take from the Parkvale groundwater zone was shut off.
irrigation take, the capex for the pond has been kept to a minimum but still allowed him to maintain consistent production. We are in a good position to do the risk management calculation given our irrigation background,” he says. Irrigation Services (Wairarapa) project manager Ben Coulson says the business is in a good position to offer clients an alternative when they face water shortages now and in the future. “Irrigation Services can call on its sister company I.S. Dam Lining to provide water storage; this ticks one side of the development equation.”
FDE part of equation Holding Farm Dairy Effluent Accreditation and having a strong working knowledge in this area is another key factor for Irrigation Services. “Once again we can make storage calculations for farmers and ensure the capex is kept efficient,” Adrian says.
The 180 hectare farm runs 560 cows. The water storage allows him to maintain his production when his take is limited.
At times there is a crossover between effluent and irrigation. “We have done a number of schemes in Wairarapa using a combination of effluent and water storage.”
“As the water storage supplements his

development at Carterton. “Here we developed an oversized effluent pond that can also be used for irrigation – there are options a-plenty,” he says. Adrian encourages farmers to think outside the square. “Once a step toward water storage has been taken, it opens up an increase in land use possibilities, and reduces risk for the business.” Working in with a good earthworks contractor was critical to success of the project. PJ Warren Contracting in Featherston play a vital role in farm dairy effluent pond and water storage development in Wairarapa. Peter Warren encourages farmers to move on with their farm dairy effluent development. “Once it has been established, the benefits especially in managing workload over the busy calving time are well worth it.” Peter is a shareholder in Kaiwaiwai Dairies. Two years ago they installed effluent ponds and last year they developed a pivot irrigation system combining the effluent. “We have seen really good results irrigating the effluent onto fodder crops, it has been a huge benefit.”

FARMLANDS - OFFERING A DIRECT ROUTE TO THE RURAL REAL ESTATE MARKET Not many - if any - other real estate companies have a captive rural market of 62,000 farmers and rural lifestyle property owners. But that is exactly what the rural team at Farmlands Real Estate Masterton are able to offer. Despite only opening two years ago, the Wairarapa branch has already had an immediate and significant impact on the local rural real estate market, selling nine farms in the past six months, and 45 lifestyle properties since opening. “It’s been a wonderful two years”, says Tim
Falloon, the branch’s Manager. One of the advantages the Wairarapa branch has, is that its purpose-built offices are right next door to the Farmlands store in Chapel Street. “People don’t have to feel like they have made a firm decision to buy or sell when they come in. They are always welcome to just drop in when they are shopping at Farmlands and see where things are at.” The Wairarapa branch also reaches the rural market through the Farmlander and Mainlander magazines which get distributed for free to rural letterboxes throughout
New Zealand. International interest is targeted through the Farmlands website. Tim, Rod Cranswick and Damien Pivac, who sell rural and lifestyle property from Pahiatua to the south Wairarapa coast, all come from rural backgrounds.

LANGLANDS MOTORCYCLES
EVERY YEAR LANGLANDS HELPS RUN THE GLADSTONE RUGBY CLUB JAB TRAIL RIDE
REDUCE LAMENESS AND SAVE MONEY WITH HOOFPRO This season has been a particularly bad one for lameness, according to Masterton veterinarian and hoof trimmer Alex von der Beeck.
Its hydraulics are superior, allowing animals to be much more securely held which makes the work safer for both the animals and operator.
There are a lot of contributing factors, Alex says, from wet weather to the condition of tracks to cows tiring toward the end of the milking season, “and of course going through the transition of being pregnant through birth, into peak lactation after the resting period of being dry.
But most importantly, it allows for a much better job, is hugely more efficient and much faster.
“Cows are having to walk long distances at the end of the season. They are tiring and starting to wear down.” The upcoming drying-off period is the best time to fix problems and carry out preventative hoof trimming, says Alex. “Cows need to be in good condition, and going into the new season with the best possible hooves.” One of the most qualified hoof trimmers in New Zealand, Alex runs professional bovine hoof care service HoofPro. Alex uses a Wopa S39 hydraulic crush which she transports on farms for the job. This new technology, developed in the Netherlands, is a massive step up from the usual crushes available on farms.
Using traditional methods on a typical farm one would use ropes to tie the feet to the side of the rails. With a high risk for injury and bad access to hooves therefore only the worst hoof gets picked up while the opposite and or diagonal are often almost as badly affected. “I can do 50 or 60 in a day with the new machine doing preventative trims, and around 20 for lame cows that need much more extensive treatment, doing all four feet so they can ‘run on all cylinders’.” “This is more economical than using your own staff who are needed for the day to day work, aren’t trained to do a professional job, and don’t have the time to.” Alex points out that when farmers do 10 km of fencing they are getting a fencing company in with appropriate equipment, she says the same principle should apply to looking after the hooves of their stock.

LENDING A HELPING HAND TO RURAL COMMUNITIES Langlands Motorcycles loves to support Wairarapa’s rural communities. Sometimes it is in big ways like the Keinzley Agvet Wairarapa Sheep & Beef Business of the Year for which Langlands donates the use of an ATV motorcycle for a year to the winner. Others are small like spot prizes for the Wainuioru School Pet Day, Wairarapa Sports Fishing Club, Pukemanu Boating and Fishing Club and local dog trials. “A lot of our customers are rural, so we like to support the rural community as much as we possibly can,” says Manager Amber Greenfield.

TFM TRACTORS – ATTRACTING FRESH NEW TALENT TO WAIRARAPA A fresh new face has joined the TFM Tractors sales team as the new Retail Sales Trainee. Callum Ceci is a very enthusiastic and friendly “young lad” as Retail Sales Manager Cyril Butler, describes him. “We’re thrilled to have Callum on board. He’s going to be a great addition to the team. He’s a great communicator and he’s keen to learn and grow in the role”. Callum is brand new to Wairarapa, coming from Wanaka in the South Island with a strong background in agricultural contracting. So while he is new to our region, he most definitely isn’t new to the rural sector with a very strong track record. Over the past seven years he’s done almost everything there is to do, including haymaking, seed drilling and cultivation. Callum grew up in a farming family and his Dad even worked for Massey Fergusson “back in the day”. Callum goes on to say that he is committed to working
within the agricultural sector and looking forward to being part of the Wairarapa rural community. “I’m really looking forward to getting to know the local farmers and getting involved in the wider community,” he says. Callum has only been here two months but is already making a great impression. “He’s a great team player and a very good communicator,” says his boss, Cyril. And the feeling is mutual with Callum agreeing that he is really enjoying working at TFM and is already learning a lot. “Everyone has been very welcoming and warm,” says Callum. Outside work, Callum is looking forward to pursuing some of his interests such as enjoying the outdoors – fishing and jetboating. And is looking forward to meeting a new group of people and seeing what Wairarapa has to offer. “It’s fantastic to see young people moving to Wairarapa to take up these opportunities,” says Cyril.

YOU CAN HAVE GREAT BROADBAND IN RURAL WAIRARAPA Does your broadband pass the Netflix test? For a lot of rural people the answer is no, but with WIZwireless you can get great broadband speeds no matter where you live. WIZwireless is one of more than 30 operators all over New Zealand who deploy leading edge wireless broadband technology in rural areas. Collectively they are known as wireless ISPs, WISPS or regional telcos. WISPs provide high quality broadband in hard-to-reach places which national operators shy away from because of low population density and challenging topography. Collectively WISPs already have around 40,000 customers in rural New Zealand on high quality, reliable broadband. WISPS are resilient. For example, in recent civil emergencies in Minginui and Kaikoura the local WISP stayed on line without interruption and for a time was the sole lifeline.
national service providers can provide them. From Waihoke to Lake Ferry, WIZwireless offers standard broadband speeds that are significantly faster than others can provide. There are plans to suit everyone - homes, farms and businesses - with a variety of Internet speed and data options available including no phone lines and no line charges. Bridget Canning and her team can find the most flexible solution for any situation. Ben Seddon and Shaun Minifie install the Internet connections and provide technical back up and support, Steven Gregg looks after the network, and Wayne Keating takes care of the admin. All the WIZwireless team are committed to bringing broadband to Wairarapa’s rural farms, businesses and homes, for whom city grade broadband is now a must-have.
The technology involves directing data between Internet networks and remote locations via repeaters placed on hill tops. Where mains power isn’t available, the repeaters are powered by solar, wind, battery or generators. Local farmers help with access to hill tops and power in return for broadband and phone services that are far better than

KYEBURN STATION - GROWSMART PRECISION VRI WITH FIELDNET Growsmart Precision VRI with FieldNET is the ultimate add-on for easy and cost efficient irrigation, Maniototo sheep and beef farmer Hamish Mackenzie says. “It’s simple, easy to use and gives you heaps of flexibility. I can sort and upload a watering plan and set it going at the push of a button.” At Kyeburn Station, an extensive 3300ha sheep and beef property, 260ha of flats are irrigated. Half the area is watered by a 570 metre Zimmatic centre-pivot. It was installed with Growsmart Precision VRI in 2015 and in November 2016 was upgraded with FieldNET, a remote communication tool making it possible to control Growsmart Precision VRI from any internet-capable device. The limited cell phone coverage means Hamish is not set up for complete remote control but FieldNET has given him greater flexibility over irrigation. And he says the new updated system is far superior to its predecessor. This season the pivot watered pasture, swedes, barley and fodder beet. The patchwork of different crops, each with different watering requirements, could have made irrigation management
a headache. But the combination of Growsmart Precision VRI and FieldNET made it surprisingly straightforward. “You can add in as many different fields as needed, and alter the watering rates on each or keep them out of the rotation as required. That’s the beauty of VRI and FieldNET, it’s so easy to alter things.” Installation of FieldNET was about $1000 on top of the Growsmart Precision VRI but he reckons he’s easily recouped the cost – and saved water. Efficient use of water is a number one priority given the region’s 500mm annual rainfall and extended summer dry periods. Water is taken from the Kyeburn River, from a main race which Hamish shares with four farms. He has a 52l/s allocation but over the last year the combination of Growsmart Precision VRI and FieldNET has reduced pivot water use to about 43l/s. “I’ve been able to cut back the percentage flow through the pivot in summer and we’ve been able to use the extra if needed for k-line irrigation. Also we’ve saved money because we’re not having to pump as much water and we don’t need as much pressure.”

The water he saves under one pivot can be redistributed to irrigate an additional 23 ha of his farm, producing more grass and therefore more milk. How does Phil do all of this? FieldNET® by Lindsay integrates with Precision VRI to provide complete remote pivot management, with VRI control, along with:
