South Wairarapa Veterinary Services

Pinfolds Transport (2008) Ltd

FarmPlus technicians taking some of the load off farmers Using skilled technicians in cooperation with veterinarians makes good sense, according to Adrian Evans of South Wairarapa Veterinary Services. Providing skilled, practical and competent staff to get jobs done on farm is becoming a more important part of the veterinary business.

Jobs that farmers struggle with doing well, or don’t like doing, can be taken on by a team with the knowledge, technology, know-how, and skills to get them done well.”

Our Farmplus tech team is currently inserting dry cow therapy and teatsealing heifers, and that will change to scour vaccinations, and then straight into calf disbudding. Calf disbudding regulations change this year All farmers should be aware that the regulations regarding calf disbudding change this year, and that local anaesthetic must be used from October 2018. We have been using local anaesthetic as part of our protocol for the past seven years, and our FarmPlus tech teams now disbud around 10,000 calves in Wairarapa, taking the hassle out of calf disbudding. We also can

Masterton 397 Queen St Ph: 377 0456

Carterton 3240 S.H.2 Ph: 379 6767

provide ear tagging, DNA testing and BVD screening at the same time as disbudding to make the process easier. Growing fantastic dairy heifers Recent data shows that well over 50% of heifers fail to meet growth targets prior to herd entry, and this is responsible for significant wastage and loss as they fail to get pregnant after their first lactation. South Wairarapa Vets and FarmPlus have developed a heifer health and monitoring programme on the back of a successful heifer rearing field day series. We have also invested in EID systems and a portable weigh scale/ crush. This is a complete programme that would appeal to both heifer owners and graziers, and includes regular weight checks and preventative health treatments (e.g. vaccinations, parasite control) to ensure that a line of heifers meet targets for herd entry. Starting from less than $1 a week, graziers or farmers can subscribe to the service and have our tech team provide a full health and monitoring service. All they have to do is bring the heifers into the yards and help run them through when required. For further information contact our coordinators Leigh or Tracey on (06) 377 0464.

Mark Halewood established Kahu Security in 2013 to serve the Wairarapa community and their security needs. He is assisted by Senior Technician Gerhard De Beer and Office Manager Lorina Goldsworthy. With a combined 40 years’ experience in the security industry, the team at Kahu Security will be able to answer any questions you have regarding your security concerns and they will be able to advise you on what will best suit your needs. “An appropriate security system can be a very effective way to preventing a crime being committed at your property which gives you peace of mind”, Mark says. An example is if an offender does enter your property, an immediate alert can be sent to the owner and/or a nominated security company who can

then take the appropriate measures. Some other features that Kahu Security can provide are the supply and installation of automatic gates and home automation systems, which are becoming more popular as people keep up with technology. The modern security systems such as security cameras and smart alarms also enable you to see what is happening at your property even when you are not there. The benefits of this can include staff management, health & safety compliance, as well as keeping an eye on your pets and stock. Michelle, Tony and Rod

TONY AND MICHELLE HODGKISS

Specialists in rural refrigeration and automotive air-conditioning Hodgkiss Refrigeration has over 35 years’ experience in rural refrigeration, air-conditioner servicing, commercial heating/cooling equipment, and electrical. The Carterton-based business is owned and operated by Tony and Michelle Hodgkiss. Tony is a rare man in Wairarapa, being both a qualified electrician and refrigeration engineer. Michelle is responsible for administration. The other member of the team is electrician Rod Adlam, who has industrial experience and is in his second year of a refrigeration apprenticeship. They enjoy working with their rural clients who range from farmers and lifestyle owners, to agricultural contractors, trucking firms and forestry businesses. Hodgkiss Refrigeration’s agricultural services include farm refrigeration and electrical maintenance, farm machinery A/C repair and servicing, HVAC airconditioning, chillers, and cool room design and build.

“A lot of current refrigeration units on farms won’t be able to do this. “We can offer a number of different solutions which usually requires addon technology from Snapchill, Delaval and Milfoss, to take the temperature down faster. “If farmers come and talk to us, we can go through the options and recommend the best solution for them.” Farmers and lifestyle property owners often call on Hodgkiss Refrigeration to build chillers and freezers for their home kill and other necessities. Automotive air-conditioning repairs and servicing are another significant part of their work for farmers, transport companies, logging, and agricultural contractors. Tony points out that Wairarapa summers can get really hot, “so our clients need the air-conditioning systems in their truck and agricultural machinery to be working reliably and efficiently at all times. “For farmers, winter is a good time to have these repaired and serviced, when they are not in use as much.”

A pressing issue for many dairy farmers at the moment, Tony points out, are new regulations that will require milk vats on farms to reach a specified temperature faster.

Working dog diets Working dogs are an integral part of most farming operations in New Zealand. Each dog is a very cheap labour unit and certainly saves a great deal of running around on the hills our sheep, deer and cattle are farmed on. Fair to say, without them the economics of farming would be seriously compromised. Working sheep dogs require high fat, high protein diets. High fat is defined as 20 – 30% fat and high protein is defined as 30 – 32% protein. The high fat improves endurance and reduces heat loss; while the high protein significantly improves muscle resilience. Unlike humans, there is no benefit in carbohydrate loading a working dog diet. As dogs are carnivores and originated from hunting animals, they evolved to feed on mainly fat/protein rich herbivores. Since domestication of the Grey Wolf 10,000 years ago, this has not changed to any great degree.

Trial work has concluded that a dog fed a low protein diet (19%) is eight times more likely to suffer some form of musculoskeletal injury compared with a dog fed even a modest level of protein (24%). This is attributed to the lower intake of protein causing increased levels of muscle fatigue. In practical terms this means the muscle is taking less of the pressure load; this overloads the bone and results in more bone fractures. When purchasing manufactured dog food, take the time to read the label and make sure you are buying a product that has high fat/high protein levels. Don’t be misled by the advertising material. Dogs need time to digest fat and protein so try and feed them within 2 hours of completing work so they are ready to perform well the next day. Make sure they always have access to fresh clean water to drink.

No shortage of fence posts at TUMU ITM Wairarapa has been suffering from a shortage of one of the essential ingredients for fencing - No 1 posts. However, you won’t find that an issue at TUMU ITM in Lincoln Road which has its own source of supply. Right now you won’t have to wait six to eight weeks for your posts. You can purchase them today, pick them up immediately, or Tumu will schedule a delivery within a couple of days. As an added bonus, Rural Accounts Manager Kirk Bird is happy to come and quote on site, so you order exactly what you need - saving potentially thousands of dollars in unneeded posts, or running out of posts before you have got the job finished. “Through our established supplier networks we generally have on-going access to quality rounds, halves, quarters, and strainers along with our stock of wire, gates and accessories,” Kirk says. “Along with a quote, I can give advice where needed, such as for lifestyle property owners, for example.”

All three of TUMU ITM’s rural team have a huge amount of knowledge and practical experience to help customers make the right decisions. Kirk grew up on a sheep & beef farm at Tinui and now lives on a lifestyle farm with his family at Whareama. Murray Jones has lived and worked on sheep & beef farms for much his working life, and has lived on a lifestyle farm with his family at Mauriceville for many years. Mike Turley specialises in assisting customers with rural shed choices. TUMU ITM has always specialised in servicing the rural sector, offering great value to its rural customers through the ITM Group’s bulk purchasing power. It has great every-day prices on posts, strainers, wires, gates and cattle and sheep yard rails. Early next year TUMU ITM will be moving to its new site on the corner of Ngaumutawa Road and High Street where it will be committed to supporting the local community through expansion of its stock levels and product range.

After sales service important part of business Norwood Farm Machinery Centre Masterton is pleased to have two excellent young men join its Workshop and Parts departments. Recently, the tractor and agricultural machinery business advertised for a Parts Sales Person. Manager Craig Sargent interviewed Topaz Robinson and Harry Hefferen for the role. Topaz got the job, but when Craig interviewed Harry he could see the spark in his eye when the subject turned to mechanics. It just so happened that Norwoods was also looking for a new Workshop apprentice. Craig, who has experience in service and parts departments, could see Harry was the ideal person for the position. Finding Topaz and Harry together has been a real bonus, Craig says. “We’ve been really lucky. They are both just what we were looking for.” Topaz previously worked as a paint maker for Resene Paints in Upper Hutt

and had moved to Wairarapa where his partner lives. Harry finished school in Masterton last year and had been getting work experience with a local automotive repair workshop. After sales service is an important part of Norwood’s business, Craig points out. “We were really lucky to find a young keen guy with great customer skills.” Harry will assist the technicians in the Workshop as he trains to become a qualified diesel mechanic over the next four years. Topaz and Harry are youthful additions to a business that this year is celebrating its seventieth anniversary. C B Norwood Distributors Ltd was established in Palmerston North in 1948 – importing, assembling, and selling Massey Fergusson tractors. Soon after, it opened a branch in Stratford and then Carterton. “We see employing Topaz and Harry as an investment in the future of the business,” Craig says.

The personalised approach Crighton ITM in Greytown is the perfect example of why it makes sense to deal with a local business. Family-owned, Crighton ITM goes back 74 years.

Chris goes on to say that’s the nice thing about being a local business in a small town – you say hi to everyone on the street and feel part of a community.

Being a smaller family-owned business means that Crighton ITM isn’t as ‘rules-bound’ or locked into procedure as some of the bigger timber merchants, says Chris James. “Because we are smaller, we’re able to be flexible and make decisions on the run to help our customers out.”

It also means that the teams at Crighton ITM always make sure not only that they keep their promises such as delivering on time, but they also go the extra mile wherever they can.

The Crighton ITM team are all about personalised service. “It sounds cheesy but it’s true that we know our customers by name. You deal with the same person each time so our

We love a bit of banter with our regular customers – who are often from the rural community. We know whether they play rugby or soccer and which school their kids go to. We care about our customers and how they – and their families – are doing. ”

One of the key products the Crighton ITM team love helping their rural customers with is the Pole Sheds which make the perfect storage shed, calving shed or hay shed. Crighton ITM will deliver anything Wairarapa-wide – including out to the coastal areas – at a minimal cost. Crighton ITM are big believers in supporting the community which supports them. So naturally, they are strong supporters of the local rural community.

MASTERTON RURAL SUPPLIES TEAM Rural Supplies Store- product knowledge a speciality The first thing you notice about PGG Wrightson’s Masterton retail store is how friendly and knowledgeable the staff are.

Angela Parkinson has been with PGG Wrightson for the past three years and has been an equestrian all her life and this is where her passion lies.

The scope of what the Lincoln Road store carries is huge - from agri chemicals, animal health products and shearing gear, to ear tags, fertilisers and gumboots, with products for the farm house as well as the farm.

Kala Hunter joined the store 18 months ago, bringing with her an agricultural science degree and experience working on farms and at a meat processing company.

Each of the team has their own specialty as well as being able to assist across the board, and they all have rural backgrounds to draw on. Store Manager Paul Burling has had a range of agricultural roles and has experience in both sheep and beef and dairy farms. Eddie Andrew specialises in animal health and is a well-known AH expert amongst Wairarapa farmers. There is very little that Eddie doesn’t know about dips, drenches and vaccines.

Kelsey Langlands is the store’s newest Customer Service Representative. Kelsey grew up on a dairy farm in the Waikato and presently lives on a life style block, and with her fiancée manages a deer farm and is involved in the Bee industry.

Geoff’s speciality is arable cropping. Geoff has been with PGG Wrightson for 39 years. The last member of the team is Horticultural Sales Representative Spencer Southey. Spencer deals with horticultural production in the Wairarapa including organics. Spencer has been a viticulturalist in the Wairarapa for 16 years and also runs a small orchard in Masterton.

For more information contact the Masterton store on 06 370 1855

The store has two Technical Field Representatives - Gavin Harris and Geoff Horrobin. Gavin specialises in forage cropping and animal health and has been with PGG Wrightson in the Wairarapa for the past 22 years.

we can now also guarantee our wool has been ethically grown and has followed a path of genuine integrity. Wool Integrity™ is designed to provide full transparency within the supply chain, and to date over a thousand farmers across New Zealand have joined the programme. Deco Precasters

Lindsay Corporation

The good news on irrigation

Deco Precasters – rural precast concrete specialists If you need precast concrete products for your farm or lifestyle property you don’t need to travel farther than Bentley Street, Masterton.

With the ever-increasing pressure on the agricultural industry from environmental groups and the government to mitigate its often exaggerated effect on the environment it is essential that farmers continue to work towards limiting nutrient leaching from their farms.

create irrigation plans to apply effluent, fertigation and/or chemigation to specific areas under an irrigator. This enables farmers to target resources to maximise yields, ensuring efficient use of inputs such as water and nutrients, yet still preventing leaching and runoff.

Farmers with irrigation receive more criticism as this is seen as the most serious of evils, but irrigation when used with precision can be beneficial to the environment – good pasture or crop growth uses up available water and nutrients and limits run-off in times of drought.

Couple this with FieldNet, which is the platform that remotely monitors and controls all the Lindsay irrigation products from your mobile or laptop.

Using precision technology on irrigators not only provides these benefits but also greatly reduces the amount of water used to grow good pasture or crops. Irrigators using Growsmart Precision VRI experience water savings from 25 to 30%, reducing electricity and giving the other benefits of being able to turn off irrigation over and around pivot ruts, tracks, water troughs, gateways, drains and any boggy areas. Growsmart Precision VRI has been supplying these benefits for 10 years now with the original systems still working perfectly and producing world record crops for their farmers with technology that leads in this area and is continually updated to provide the farmer with ease of use and the required reporting for the environmental regulators.

Deco Precasters is a local manufacturer who can supply precast concrete products for virtually all rural requirements including stock water troughs, septic tanks, water tanks, well liners, and pump chambers. They also manufacturer precast concrete slabs and panels for bridges, dairy sheds, utility sheds and other farm buildings, and loading ramps.

A new innovation enables farmers to

The newest addition to this technology is FieldNET Adviser - a revolutionary management solution designed to provide simple science-based irrigation recommendations enabling faster, better-informed irrigation management decisions. This innovative solution combines more than 40 years of crop and irrigation research into FieldNET’s proven technology platform, leveraging massive amounts of data, cloud computing capabilities and machine learning to deliver one easy-to-use tool. No need to manually track growth or make complex calculations to ascertain the daily water usage with the frustration of using multiple unintegrated tools to track water needs and manage equipment. Growsmart Precision VRI can be installed on new irrigation systems or as an add-on to existing systems. For more information, contact your local Growsmart by Lindsay dealer or visit www.growsmartvri.com

Basically anything you want can be made to measure, using engineered certified concrete. Deco Precasters are Wairarapa agents for Humes and have a good range of culvert pipes, manhole risers, troughs and cast iron ware in stock. Deco Precasters has a steel casting bed – 10.5 metres by 4.8 metres – being put to good use for a variety of large scale concrete casting projects. Also popular is a ground & polished concrete service which is being used for affordable and attractive products such as bench tops, table tops, fire heaths, and seats, with a lot of customised projects. There’s no need to go outside Wairarapa for concrete products, Deco Precasters owner Graham McClymont says.

Everything is made locally. So every time you buy a product from Deco Precasters you are supporting local people and seven families.

3 BOYS TO THE ACRE Now at Greytown as well as Masterton This year marks the 25th anniversary of Langlands Honda in Masterton. It is also the beginning of a new era with a second Langlands Honda store just opened in Greytown. Grant Langlands’ vision when he opened, was to provide the highest possible standard of motorcycle service. In this he has been helped by having the Wairarapa franchise for Honda, the number one seller of ATVs to New Zealand farmers, and also a leader in rural motorcycle and side-byside sales. Grant also wanted to give back to the community, and today Langlands Honda does this in all sorts of ways, from supporting the Keinzley Agvet Wairarapa Sheep & Beef Business of the Year, to spot prizes for school pet days, fishing competitions and dog trials, to hosting a Honda Kids Campout.

The technicians in the workshop have many decades of experience, and are trained in repairing and servicing Honda products. Like the Masterton store, Langlands Honda Greytown has several demonstrator models available to try out on-farm, a free service to make sure they are suited to needs before purchase.

Now Grant is excited to have opened a second store at the north entrance to Greytown.

Langlands Honda Greytown is also the South Wairarapa agent for Husqvarna, with a range of products for farmers, forestry workers and aborists as well as property owners - including chainsaws, lawn mowers, ride-on mowers, line trimmers, leaf blowers and hedge trimmers.

Irrigation Services

COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTIONS FOR EFFLUENT AND WATER Irrigation Services (Wairarapa) has focused on creating comprehensive solutions for dairy farm clients for their effluent and water needs. Working with its sister company IS Dam Lining, waste and water storage requirements are calculated and designed for each individual site. Building your own water storage pond gives surety of income and increases the value of agricultural businesses, Irrigation Services Managing Director Adrian Mannering says. Much has been said about the Government’s proposal to make 90 per cent of rivers swimmable by 2040, but it is clear increased focus will fall on water quality and perceived threats to that quality. Water for farming and horticulture is no longer a right, and careful planning is needed to make a robust business plan. Wairarapa, like Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay, is experiencing a squeeze on water permitting. Regional council plan changes have in some areas greatly restricted farmers and growers’ ability to run their businesses.

We will continue to see minimum flows in rivers lifted, and a squeezing up of permitted takes.”

Regional councils in these areas look favourably toward storage of off-peak water. Water storage ponds fill in the winter when water is plentiful, to be used over the drier summer months to irrigate their crops or pasture. Adrian says there are some good examples of how water storage can create opportunity for a sound business model. Delegat Ltd developed two large dams of 230 meg, at Crownthorpe in Hawke’s Bay 15 years ago, an area with restricted water to irrigate their 300 hectare vineyard. “We calculated the amount of storage required for when the Ngaruroro River take was turned off in times of low flow. It has really come into its own in drought years, ensuring consistent water to allow consistent yields and quality.” IS Dam Lining installed the third dam at Crownthorpe for Delegat in the summer, a 300 meg dam, to enable further grape developments. Irrigation Services (Wairarapa) project

RURAL SECTOR EXTRA 2018

Floating cover installation in Southland undertaken by IS Dam Lining. manager Ben Coulson says the business is in a good position to offer clients an alternative when they face water shortages now and in the future. “Irrigation Services can call on its sister company IS Dam Lining to provide water storage; this ticks one side of the development equation.” FDE part of equation Holding Farm Dairy Effluent Accreditation and having a strong working knowledge in this area is another key factor for Irrigation Services. “Once again we can make storage calculations for farmers and ensure the capex is kept efficient,” Adrian says. At times there is a crossover between effluent and irrigation. “We have done a number of schemes in Wairarapa using a combination of effluent and water storage.” A good example of this was Clint Reynolds development at Carterton. “Here we developed an oversized effluent pond that can also be used for irrigation – there are options a-plenty,” he says.

Once a step toward water storage has been taken, it opens up an increase in land use possibilities, and reduces risk for the business.”

Adrian encourages farmers to think outside the square. Working in with a good earthworks contractor was critical to success of the project. PJ Warren Contracting in Featherston plays a vital role in farm dairy effluent pond and water storage development in Wairarapa. Peter Warren encourages farmers to move on with their farm dairy effluent development.

Once it has been established, the benefits especially in managing workload over the busy calving time are well worth it.”

Peter is a shareholder in Kaiwaiwai Dairies; two years ago they installed effluent ponds and last year they developed a pivot irrigation system combining the effluent. “We have seen really good results irrigating the effluent on to fodder crops, it has been a huge benefit.” Floating covers in the Southland region has been the biggest technology push; IS Dam Lining has been at the forefront of this new technology development for New Zealand dairy farms. The covers have proven to be a lower cost and more robust solution than bladders.

You CAN have great broadband if you live in rural Wairarapa Does your broadband pass the Netflix test?

available, the repeaters are powered by solar, wind, battery or generators.

For a lot of rural people the answer is no, but with WIZwireless you can get great broadband speeds no matter where you live.

Local farmers help with access to hill tops and power in return for broadband and phone services that are far better than national service providers can provide them.

WIZwireless is one of more than 30 operators all over New Zealand who deploy leading edge wireless broadband technology in rural areas. Collectively they are known as wireless ISPs, WISPS or regional telcos. WISPs provide high quality broadband in hard-to-reach places which national operators shy away from because of low population density and challenging topography. Collectively WISPs already have around 40,000 customers in rural New Zealand on high quality, reliable broadband. WISPS are resilient. For example, in recent civil emergencies in Minginui and Kaikoura the local WISP stayed on line without interruption and for a time was the sole lifeline. The technology involves directing data between Internet networks and remote locations via repeaters placed on hill tops. Where mains power isn’t

From Waihoke to Lake Ferry, WIZwireless offers standard broadband speeds that are significantly faster than others can provide. There are plans to suit everyone homes, farms and businesses - with a variety of Internet speed and data options available, including no phone lines and no line charges. Bridget Canning and her team can find the most flexible solution for any situation. Ben Seddon and Shaun Minifie install the Internet connections and provide technical back up and support, Steven Gregg looks after the network, and Wayne Keating takes care of the admin. All the WIZwireless team are committed to bringing broadband to Wairarapa’s rural farms, businesses and homes, for whom city grade broadband is now a must have.

Wairarapa’s exclusive dealers in SolarWaterPumps - both practical AND money saving Wairarapa farmers are becoming increasingly interested in using solar pumps for stock water reticulation. Cooper Farm Services is excited to be able to offer farmers what they believe are the best solar pumps available for this purpose. The Carterton business is the exclusive North Island dealer for Australian brand SolarWaterPumps. Solar pumps are becoming increasingly popular for two main reasons, says Craig Burcher who installs them. 1. They are much cheaper to install when the pump is going to be located a long way from an electrical power source. 2. There are no on-going line fees or charges. SolarWaterPumps offer both these benefits but also have other outstanding features, says Craig. They provide reliable suction for up to six metres, can be run dry without damaging the pump, have a pressure switch for automatic operation, are extremely low maintenance, and are robustly constructed. Even farmers who do have access to electricity nearby are using them. Every pump is designed specifically for where it will be located and what it will be used for. The pumps operate even in low light and are constructed so that they catch the most sunlight for the location where they are placed.

When a customer is interested, one of the team will do a site visit first, collect all necessary information and then send it to the Australian company who recommend the most suitable system. Coopers provides a free quote and then installs the system. For deeper bores of up to 20 metres, Coopers can install solar powered submersible bore hole pumps too. You can call in and see their solar pump on site at their workshop behind their shop at 35 High Street North, in the heart of Carterton’s shopping centre. The shop and showroom offer many more product lines that Coopers sell. Coopers are a GEA milking machine dealer, Davey Water Products Master dealer, and specialise in water filtration, irrigation, light engineering, water tanks, water pumps and much much more. It is a family-run business comprising of Wayne, and the two Cooper boys Ethan and Sam, Craig, Arnia and Michelle. To find out more about the solar pumps or any of the other services offered by Coopers, pop into the showroom and talk to Michelle or Arnia. You will be surprised at what they do stock.

• Diaphragm positive displacement pump • Reliable suction up to 6 metres • Can be run dry without damage • Pressure switch fitted for automatic operation

• Simple maintenance • Belt driven, using a triple size steel pulley on the motor which enables fine tuning of pump speed to maximise output • Robust construction and extremely reliable for many years of hassle free pumping

Tim Falloon A Wealth of Knowledge and Experience at your Service This month marks 20 years since Tim Falloon took his first steps into real estate. Over the past two decades Tim has sold over $150 million in predominantly farm and lifestyle properties. For the 20 years prior to that Tim had been a sheep and beef farmer in the North Wairarapa. “Real estate was something that I always had an interest in, our children had grown up, and farming can be a solitary existence.” He has loved meeting and working with some wonderful people and the Wairarapa has attracted people from all walks of life and all over the world, with the internet making the biggest changes, meaning a lot of people can work from home or commute. Tim has been in real estate management for the past 15 years, the past three of those as manager of Farmland’s first real estate office in the North Island, in Chapel Street, Masterton. He has just taken on the role of Regional Manager for the Lower North Island while a colleague is on maternity leave and still continues to sell properties. Demand for rural properties is outstripping supply at present, Tim says. “It’s a healthy time for vendors with lots of multiple offers for both farms and lifestyle properties, although farms are coming on the market less often and require a bit more patience before they are sold.” The most notable feature of the market is how many of the buyers are coming from outside the Wairarapa, Tim says. Only two of the properties below were sold to people who already lived in the Wairarapa. The others were sold to buyers from Wellington, Auckland and England. Tim has no plans to retire, although he is enjoying spending more family time with his children and grandchildren. He still keeps his hand in farming by helping out on the sheep and beef farm one of his sons leases. “I still feel like a farmer at heart.”

John Griffith & Co

Introducing Jock Cameron John Griffith is pleased to have one of the next generation of stock agents working for him – all the more because of the talents Jock Cameron has brought with him. John Griffith & Co was founded by John Griffith Senior in 1989, who is now retired and has passed the baton on to his son John Griffith Junior. John, Andrew Griffith, Carl Petersen and newcomer Jock are based in the business’ Wairarapa office at 116 Chapel Street, Masterton, along with Office Manager Ellen O’Hara, while Scott Reilly is the Manawatu agent and James McRae in Hawke’s Bay. Before Jock joined the Masterton office three and a half years ago, John had been thinking about the future needs of the business. “I saw a changing landscape for the requirements for a stock agent and saw technology coming in, in a big way.

As an independent livestock company, honesty, integrity and trust are all qualities John felt Jock offered.

3 SUPERB NEW KUMHO TYRES MT51 Latest technology to make the perfect 4WD tyre • Premium on and off road ability • Outstanding road handling • Strong puncture resistance • Great on gravel roads • Very tough side wall • Stone ejectors

We have to make sure both the buyer and seller are happy and the transaction is 100 percent transparent.”

Jock has a firm grip on technology from online feed budget to stock prices to market trends and risks. But those sorts of skills only count for so much with John. “Being a livestock agent takes four or five years to really get to know the business. You can have all the knowledge in the world but you have finished your apprenticeship when you have the trust of farmers and they know you do a good job.

“My feeling was that we had to have someone with technical ability but also someone who was personable and understands the rural fabric and what our clients need.

For Jock, who is building up his own client base, finding his ideal job in his home town is something he really appreciates. “I enjoy getting out on farms and building strong relationships with the farmers I work on behalf of.”

“When Jock worked for us over one summer holidays, I saw those values coming through and what was really reassuring was how he was building up a very good rapport with clients, no matter if they were 30 or 70.”

“Jock Cameron from John Griffith & Co has been a real asset to Mayfield Farm since starting in his role three years ago. Jock has got a great understanding of Farmax and a good eye for quality stock. Cheers Jock.”

Jock grew up on his family’s sheep & beef farm at Bideford, Masterton, and completed a Batchelor of AgriCommerce, specialising in farm management at Massey University.

WCM Legal

GV Electrical & Pumping

Farming in the blood for WCM LEGAL WCM Legal has been providing advice to Wairarapa’s rural communities since 1874. Today, the region’s farms and agricultural businesses remain a core part of its business, often going back three, four or more generations. For Principal Lindsay Gribben, farming is in his blood. South Island born and bred, Lindsay graduated from the University of Canterbury in 1978. He worked in legal practices in Timaru, Balclutha and Oamaru, and in the 1980s farmed near Rakaia, before moving to Wairarapa in 1996. Lindsay works out of the Masterton office and also services a large client base in the Eketahuna area. He practises primarily in all aspects of conveyancing (rural, domestic and commercial), trusts, succession planning, wills, estates and small businesses. Having a farming background makes a difference, Lindsay has found. “People appreciate it when they can talk to you about their business and feel you understand where they are coming from. This is especially so when they are going through a tough time.”

The price of farms has reached the point where it is often impossible for a family farm to be left to just one child, especially if the other children aren’t fairly compensated. The sooner farmers plan for succession, the better, Lindsay says. “The longer the lead-in time, the more options you have.” Early planning, for instance, might lead to more off-farm investments which can then be used to provide an equivalent share of the estate for the other offspring. Lindsay recommends the farmer gets around the table with their professional advisers and all parties who will be affected so that they can have some input into the final decision. Fellow Principal Mark Hinton also has a strong interest in agriculture with farming one of his main areas of practice, with an added emphasis on resource management and local government law. Jason Carruthers who works out of WCM Legal’s Greytown office is now handling the work for many of the rural clients who have a long association with that office.

Probably the area of most difficulty for farmers is succession planning, Lindsay believes.

Storage is the key to managing dairy effluent Today’s dairy farm operators have a lot to consider when upgrading their effluent management system.

operation.

The Regional Council now requires a full design to be drawn up by an accredited designer when renewing consents, with this process involving assessment of the soils, collection areas, rainfall, water in use, and available application methods amongst other things. Gordon Mouldey along with his design team at GV Electrical Ltd hold the accreditation requirements set by the Council to carry out this work. The GVE Team believe that every farm is different, and that the effluent system should be matched to the farm; rather than trying to match the farm to specific equipment.

The storage bladder above, installed to a farm just north of Greytown, is a cost-effective and interesting new option for effluent storage. Being fully enclosed, these bladders emit very little odour which was a concern because of the site’s close proximity to residential areas. They also do not expose the stored effluent to the same amounts of air and light as open-air storage ponds which helps to prevent crusting, and they prevent rainfall from entering the system which can significantly lower the volume of storage required. To get an effective effluent system design that will suit your farm’s needs, give Gordon and his GV Electrical team a call now.

“Because creating adequate storage is a big cost that in most cases can’t

We approach each design with the intention of using as much of the existing infrastructure as possible,” Gordon says.

Things you can do for your pool over the winter HEAT PUMPS

Now that it is winter this is the perfect time to ensure your pool and equipment are summer-ready. Here are some great tips on things you can do for your pool over the winter.

We supply and install energy-efficient heat pumps. Heat your pool for as little as $4 a day and extend your swimming season further! Call in today to learn more about our heat pumps and how you can either extend the swimming season or have all-year-round heating.

POOL FENCING SURROUND

Take the time to examine what needs to be done with either your pool fencing, decking or coping tiles. Make sure they are kept cleaned, repaired and meeting all safety standards.

WINTERISE YOUR POOL

While the weather is freezing, the pool becomes quickly forgotten. In order to avoid any expensive algae clean-up costs, your pool will need winterising to protect it until summer arrives. Our pool valet technician services pools monthly, testing the water, balancing pH as needed, shock dosing and adding algaecide. A vacuum is needed occasionally to remove debris [food for algae] and as long as your water is well balanced and phosphate-free your pool will stay clear and algae-free. Now that water is colder than 16 degrees you can decrease your filter time to 8 -16 hours per week depending on your filtration system. Over autumn, while the leaves are falling, you will need to clear the skimmer daily and leaf rake to remove the waterlogged debris. We now have a Winter Box available containing an algaecide, sanitiser and clarifier to make it simpler for you to treat your pool.

FILTRATION

Your pool filtration is the most important part of swimming pool management. Whether you have a cartridge filter or sand (glass) filter, getting it cleaned is one of those “must-

If you are thinking of any new installations or refurbishments, book a time now to take advantage of our winter rates and beat the rush of the summer season. The team here at Clear Pools are here to help ensure your pool is clean, crystal clear and algae free all year round. do” Jobs. If you find that you have trouble keeping that extra shimmer in your pool, it could be that the filter needs a clean. Both the cartridge and sand filter can be cleaned using a filter degreaser solution to remove any undissolved solids or body fats. since your sand (glass) will wear out over time, we recommend to replace the media every 7-8 years

POOL COVERS

If your pool has a cover it can now be cleaned off and stored away. Enjoy the look of the pool! Our cover suppliers suggest “Pool covers are designed to stay on the pool all year round. Keeps your pool cleaner in winter and eliminates “that big annual clean-

up” that takes DAYS to get the pool ready for Summer.” In reality, we have found debris that falls on to the cover will be washed into the pool by the rain and out of sight until the cover is removed. Leaving your cover on allows rain water to be held on top, which not only helps algae to grow quite quickly it also creates green staining on top of the cover. We recommend cleaning and storing the cover away for the winter so that you can better manage what is happening in the pool as well as enjoying the view. If you don’t have a cover this is a good time to think about getting your pool sized and fitted for a Solar Pool Cover to take advantage of the spring sun to heat your pool.

SEASONAL POOL EQUIPMENT CHECK-UP

We provide pool equipment servicing and check-ups, which is advised to be done seasonally. This service ensures that your equipment is functioning efficiently and provides the peace of mind that everything is in good condition for the start of the spring and summer.

LET US DO THE WORK FOR YOU!

Why do the work yourself when we can do it for you! We provide all of the above as well as a winter valet service for any type of pool. Be in quick for the winter rates! Ordish & Stevens SCOTT AND LISA FORBES

Celebrating two years of being 100 per cent local July marks the second anniversary of Ordish & Stevens being locally owned once more. The Masterton-based business has been servicing Wairarapa farmers for 50 years. Scott Forbes joined Ordish & Stevens in 2007 as its Operations Manager, and bought the business with wife Lisa on July 1st 2016. Over the past two years the business has enjoyed steady growth. It continues to offer its core business of designing, supplying and installing irrigation, effluent, and milking systems. For example, it has designed and built the irrigation section of the new Martinborough waste water scheme. Stock water reticulation remains an important part of its work (including solar systems), along with water filtration for bores and rainwater storage tanks. But Scott and Lisa have taken Ordish & Stevens in new directions as well. A year ago they established FWL Trays & Trailers. This division constructs steel ute and ATV trays, trailers, and aluminium dog and tool boxes. Examples of its work can be seen outside the Solway building or on the FWL Facebook page. FWL Trays & Trailers was created to make the most of the skills of Ordish & Steven’s light engineering technicians, Scott says. It is also part of Scott and Lisa’s vision of providing a more comprehensive range of services to their customers. Scott and Lisa have retained nearly all of the original team and have been able to bring some new faces into the team as well, with staff numbers lifting to 25 since they took ownership.
