Precision irrigation makes every drop of water count For 10 years the Zimmatic Precision VRI system has been recognised around the world as the leading precision irrigation solution on the market. Since its inception in 2004, the Precision VRI system has gone from strength to strength, becoming the world’s most environmentally savvy precision irrigation system. Its uniqueness lies in its Kiwi-developed Precision VRI – variable rate irrigation – technology, which allows farmers to irrigate specific areas that need it, and applying the right amount of water and nutrients needed to grow sustainable crops. To get the most out of the technology the irrigated area can be EM (electro-magnetic) surveyed, which provides an indication of the spatial variation in water holding capacity of the soil. This information can then be used as a basis for the irrigation plan in which the Precision VRI technology will individually control each nozzle, allowing customised irrigation within a field.
There is such a thing as too much and too little, and Precision VRI makes sure not a single drop of water or nutrients are wasted, over multiple soil types and terrains. From growing the seeds we rely on to grow our vegetables, to the maize we plant to feed stock, efficient irrigation makes sure every drop counts. Over the past decade Precision VRI has enabled New Zealand’s farmers, food producers and agricultural contractors to achieve better results, driving efficiencies and saving money – to the benefit of our agribusinesses and their contributions to the global food economy. From sowing the seed right through to cutting the crops, Zimmatic Precision VRI helps farmers and producers save precious natural resources while maintaining growth and production, and competitive advantage as a global food provider. Finance specialist role reflects growth It has now been four years since Brent and Tracey Cooper took ownership of Wairarapa Mitsubishi with the aim of making both the Masterton dealership and the Mitsubishi brand leaders in Wairarapa. Since then the Queen Street business has been through many milestones and last year achieved number one status in sales in Wairarapa, with Mitsubishi achieving the number three position nationally. This year Wairarapa Mitsubishi is leading sales after the first six months. The growth in sales has seen the business add more staff across its departments with one of the newest additions being Amy Huston in Sales, Finance and Insurance, in which she has many years experience, in Wellington and Wairarapa.
• Dietary fibres and psyllium help to prevent diarrhoea and constipation
“We needed a finance specialist on hand to make the purchasing process faster and easier for our customers,” says Brent. “Now Amy can tailor a package to suit them when our customers buy a new or used vehicle.
• High levels of omega 3 fatty acids, magnesium, glucosamine and chondroitin for joint support

“For instance, we are unusual in that we are able to access finance from multiple lending companies.
A customer may already have a relationship with one of these so Amy can streamline the process so they can borrow from the same company.” In the Parts Department Kitty Nunns-Smith has joined Parts Manager William Pringle. Another new face is Jacko Hull in the service department. Brent credits the growth in Mitsubishi’s market share to “great pricing, the best warranty and a significant increase in product quality. Brent believes the success of the business comes down to its staff providing exceptional customer service, “and I would like to think that we have made the Mitsubishi brand fashionable in Wairarapa again.” The other key member of the team, says Brent, is his wife Tracey who “does a bit of everything. She helps Amy in sales and finance, as she used to do this previously, and my dad Clive who is in the grooming department but also does a great job in the sales department when needed”.

Rural mental health with John Roberts Accounting firm looking out for its clients Farming has its share of highs and lows and challenges. Heavy workloads, combined with things outside a farmer’s control such as weather and market prices, can increase the risk of unhealthy stress and burnout. Research shows that stress and fatigue are also contributing factors to accident and injury on the farm. The good news is that knowing the warning signs and acting on them helps manage stress and prevent burnout. With all this in mind, the accounting firm of Sellar & Sellar in Masterton has taken a proactive stand and embraced the services of the East Coast Rural Support Trust which operates to keep an eye out for those in the rural community under stress. The Wairarapa co-ordinator, John Roberts, was invited to one of the firm’s staff meetings recently to outline needs in the rural community, and how to recognise signs in their clients who may need help, and what to do about it. He told staff that the early intervention of a rural
coordinator can really help find solutions, restore confidence and dignity, and facilitate recovery and wellness. Mr Roberts said ‘stressed out farmers’ come in all walks of life and their situation can result from many factors including relationship breakdowns; financial pressures; issues with stock health to succession planning problems. “Often these farmers just need someone to sit down with them and talk it out.” He said there had been a spike in mental health issues in the rural community, despite good farm prices recently. “We all live in a highly complex world with huge expectations and pressure to perform. The rural sector is no exception. Often the characters in the rural community, bred to be resilient and cope with everything, are men who have been told “boys don’t cry” and to “harden up. It’s difficult to open up with these entrenched messages.” Mr Roberts told Sellar & Sellar staff that New Zealand had one of the highest suicide rates in the western world and there was real

appropriate support services.
“It can be very isolating, working alone a lot of the time.” Recent research has shown that proportionately there is higher incidence rate of suicides in rural versus urban populations. Obviously this is a concern and it’s why we try to support people as early as possible.”
Mr Roberts has worked as a funeral director in the past and is experienced in working with people in high stress situations. He also comes from having experienced losing his own brother to suicide.
The Trust is independent, strictly confidential, free and available via 0800 757 284. GV ELECTRICAL & PUMPING
GIBSON SHEAT
BRETT GOULD
Examining science of efficient irrigation Succeeding at succession Brett Gould PARTNER – LLB, MBA (Distn)
Servicing dairy farms, lifestyle blocks, rural and urban households, industrial, and commercial customers; the company is owned and operated by Wairarapa couple Gordon and Wendy Mouldey, backed by a staff of 12 including designers, electricians, pump technicians, store and admin staff, and an engineer at their extensive Belvedere Road premises in Carterton.
Seamus Pomeroy is an irrigation designer at GV Electrical and stresses the importance of considering efficient irrigation as a science in itself. He says more and more land is being brought under irrigation in Wairarapa and there’s only so much water to go around; “When it comes to irrigation, there’s an increasing expectation from farmers and the public that water is used as efficiently as possible; this is where we step in. “GV Electrical has always strived to be a leader at the forefront of the irrigation industry, designing and providing solutions based on the latest scientific knowledge and technology. With another irrigation season drawing to a close for Wairarapa farmers, it’s a good time to reflect on what’s worked this year with the irrigation system, and what hasn’t.”
He and Gordon Mouldey are encouraging farmers to begin to view themselves as ‘water farmers’; “Water is a finite and valuable resource” Gordon says, “It’s important that every litre that gets pumped is utilised, otherwise they are paying for all the associated costs – energy, maintenance, and management, and getting very little return.”
They both agree Wairarapa farmers are realising the difference between a system that simply pours water onto the ground every day, and a system that has been designed specifically for a site, based on soil tests, crop types and how the farm is operated. “Proper utilisation of water begins with knowledge of the soil, particularly its water holding capacity and the surrounding environment. GV Electrical’s irrigation systems are designed to maintain soil moisture at the optimum level for growth, and allow farmers to make informed decisions around irrigation timeframes.” Gordon and Seamus encourage anyone looking to improve their irrigation outcomes to give GVE a call; they’re more than happy to answer any questions you may have and will work hard to provide you with the best solution for your irrigation needs.
Brett Gould is a partner in the law firm Gibson Sheat, working out of its Masterton office. He has strong commercial and rural experience and a practice across several farming and commercial areas, based on guiding parties into the most appropriate planning, governance, management, operational; dispute resolution and succession and syndication planning and implementation. For the past 15 years he has been closely involved in farm syndications. He acts for a number of professional syndicators, and represents parties in legal and practical issues that arise in respect of the same. Succession is a subject he is increasingly interested in, both on the farm and in business. He says farm succession planning can especially be a long process and the earlier people think about it, the less painful and the more successful it can be. “Families need to get creative, sit, plan and talk with appropriate professionals, and get the process started.” Taking his own advice about doing something, he, and a group of other rural professionals, took the initiative earlier this year to provide an opportunity for farmers wondering about how to start their succession. While the offer did not
attract as many people as they had hoped, Brett says the feedback they received was there was more conversation being held about succession with their professionals, and he hopes this will continue. “We are consciousness raising and that’s important.” On the same theme, a discussion evening for business owners considering succession is planned for September, promoted by Business Wairarapa. Brett is well experienced in the company arena and also has had considerable experience with limited partnerships since 2008. His expertise in Shareholder Agreements has seen him author a version of the Auckland District Law Society’s precedent agreement. He is also a member of the New Zealand Law Society’s Rural Committee, has presented and been involved in arranging Law Society seminars and is a fellow of the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand in rural mediation and conciliation. Graduating from Auckland University, Brett has practiced law in New Plymouth, Queenstown and Masterton. He also holds an MBA (Distn) from Massey University, and enjoys using his knowledge and experience in the commercial and agri-business areas.

KIRK BIRD
Rural Accounts Manager
No shortage of rural supplies Rural Accounts Manager Kirk Bird has happily settled into TUMU ITM’s new address on the corner of High Street and Ngaumutawa Road in Masterton. There is so much more room that Kirk not only has access to a wider range of stock, but even more importantly, a much greater quantity of stock available in the yard. This means instant access to enough product for a project and easier access to it with your vehicle because of the spaciousness of the yard. This includes No. 1 fencing posts which are often in short supply in the Wairarapa. But this isn’t a problem for TUMU ITM as it has its own source of supply. “Through our established supplier networks we generally have on going access to quality rounds, halves, quarters, and strainers along with our stock of wire, gates and accessories,” Kirk says. “Right now you won’t have to wait six to eight weeks for your posts. You can purchase them today and pick them up immediately, or Tumu will
schedule a delivery within a couple of days.” Alternatively, Kirk is happy to come and quote on site, so you order exactly what you need saving potentially thousands of dollars in unneeded posts, or running out of posts before you have gotten the job finished. Kirk grew up on a sheep & beef farm at Tinui and now lives out on the coast in the rural community, and continues to play for and manage East Coast’s Senior Reserve team. Along with a quote, he can give advice where needed, such as for lifestyle property owners, for example.” TUMU ITM has always specialised in servicing the rural sector, offering great value to its rural customers through the ITM Group’s bulk purchasing power. It has great every day prices on posts, strainers, wires, gates and cattle and sheep yard rails. Its new yard allows it to be even more committed to supporting the local community through expansion of its stock levels and product range.

NORWOOD
PINFOLDS TRANSPORT
The Norwood Parts team, from left, Topaz Robinson, Chaz Hill and Parts Manager Mike McArley
Knowledge and reliability at Norwood Pinfolds turn 99 Remarkably, by the standards of today’s world, Parts Manager Mike McArley has only ever had the one employer, and that is Norwood. Mike started at the Solway-based farm machinery centre in 1985 as an apprentice workshop technician but found when he did a stint in the Parts Department in 1988 that it was the sort of job he really enjoyed.
Having a mechanics background has been an invaluable aid in understanding the requirements of his customers, Mike says. “You know the right questions to ask.” The other members of the Parts team are Chaz Hill, who joined the department two years ago, and Topaz Robinson, who joined it 12 months ago. In August last year, Norwood also established a Parts sub-branch in Petone to cater to its customers in Wellington, who range from farmers and local government bodies to golf clubs. Norwood is dedicated to providing a complete 24-hour, 7-day a week after-sales service and parts package within New Zealand. “We are there when our customers need us, so they have peace-of-mind, especially during their busiest times of the
year,” says Mike. Norwood has the largest agricultural parts distribution warehouse in New Zealand, located in Palmerston North, giving the Parts Department access to more than $28 million worth of agricultural related parts. As well as tractors and farm implements, Mike and his team can source parts for chainsaws, ride-on mowers and any of the other tools needed for rural work and lifestyles. Norwood only uses genuine parts that are purpose-designed for the task.
Norwood supplies one in every three tractors sold in New Zealand and has over 70 years’ experience in supporting the New Zealand agricultural industry. The Wairarapa dealership was just the third to open in New Zealand. “At the end of the day, it all comes down to people,” Mike believes. “When people phone or come in to the Parts Department, they are talking to a reliable, honest person with product knowledge and experience.” This has been a recipe for success with the Parts Department enjoying yearly growth in sales.

You CAN have great broadband living in rural Wairarapa! Does your broadband pass the Netflix test? That’s the question to ask yourself when considering how good your internet access is. For many rural people, the answer is a resounding “NO”, but with WIZwireless, you can get great broadband speeds, no matter how remote you live. WIZwireless is 100 per cent New Zealand owned and a member of WISPA-NZ, one of around 30 operators around the country. Bridget Canning is its Managing Director and is based in Masterton. “We deploy leading-edge wireless broadband technology in rural areas. Known as wireless ISPs, WISPs, or regional Telco’s they provide high quality broadband in hard-to-reach places which national operators shy away from because of the low population density and challenging topography. We effectively work with a customer, identify where they live; where the hill tops are; examine potential coverage and then build a regional tower to create tower accessible broadband.” WISPA-NZ has more than 60,000
customers NZ wide. WISPs are resilient too, having proved their worth in the Kaikoura earthquake aftermath when the service remained operational and for a time, was the sole lifeline to the outside. The technology involves directing data between internet networks and remote locations via repeaters placed on hill tops. Where mains power isn’t available, the repeaters are powered by solar, wind, battery or generators. Landowners help create access to the hill tops and provide power in return for broadband and phone services. Bridget Canning’s team can find the most flexible solution for any situation. She is supported by Ben Seddon and Shaun Minifie, who install the internet connections and provide technical backup. Steven Gregg looks after the network and Wayne Keating runs the helpdesk and does administration. For city-grade broadband, they are worth a visit. Lansdowne Business Centre, Opaki Road, Masterton.

NZR Real Estate celebrates 5 years of successful business in Wairarapa and expands to add a Residential and Lifestyle arm. Blair Stevens, owner of NZR Real Estate Wairarapa and Tararua has been busy during the last 5 years transacting in excess of $225 million of rural sales for NZR clearly making him the number one rural agent in the Wairarapa. Blair is being joined by Dave Hutchison who will work with him in a sales partnership throughout the Wairarapa, and the Tararua districts. “Dave brings with him all the attributes we are looking for to complement our team and this provides a natural fit to solidify our local position and further grow our presence in the Lower North Island”. Blair and Dave believe maintaining a proactive relationship with customers and the ability to offer sound, unbiased professional advice is just as important as negotiating with a variety of parties to get the very best deal possible. This means treating every property they sell from the perspective that if it was their own, they would want the very best in terms of professional project management. NZR have also recently appointed Carolyn Collier and her sales team to launch into the busy Wairarapa lifestyle and residential market. Carolyn has over 23 years experience selling top end residential and lifestyle property and is joined by Lisa Patrick (sales) and Melanie Pearce (support). “We often have situations where we need to sell off a house from a farm, or we have clients with property in town that require a sector experienced agent to complete their transaction”, says Blair. “When Carolyn approached NZR it was an easy decision to add her expertise and passion to sell both residential as well as lifestyle, Wairarapa wide” NZR are currently looking for new listings across all property types - all enquiries will receive top end professional service and advice. LANGLANDS HONDA
PAKOHE AGRICULTURE
Honda achieves Pakohe Agriculture double sales success for all your agricultural needs Last year Honda Motorcycles sold more ATVs and Side-By-Sides in New Zealand than any brand, with a large portion of them ending up on farms. The sales team at Langlands Motorcycles in Masterton of Grant Langland, Grey Martin and Brock Surridge played a part in this notable achievement. Brock is the newest face to the sales team, starting as a consultant in April after previously completing his apprenticeship as a workshop technician at the Chapel Street business. He was asked to temporarily fill in on the sales floor and found he really enjoyed the role. A keen dirt biker, Brock has brought his enthusiasm for motorbikes to being a sales consultant. One of the advantages of having both technical and practical knowledge is that Brock can make on-the-spot decisions on the value of bikes that are being traded in. Grey (Graham) grew up on a dairy farm at Kahutara in South Wairarapa, coming to Langlands Honda nine years ago from a sales background in Wellington. One of the reasons why Honda
is so popular with farmers, Grey says, “is that they are built to work, not as a recreational bike. And they come with a backup warranty so if anything does go wrong, farmers know they will have their bike back as soon as possible.”
Grant founded Langlands Motorcycles in 1994, and has stayed in sales ever since, leaving the day-to-day management of the business to his daughter Amber. “I’ve always been in sales because I love selling. I love the vibe. I love meeting people.” He says Langlands contribution to Honda sales comes down to teamwork. “The mechanics, parts, and sales teams all work hard together. Everyone is passionate about our product.” Grant believes it is the quality of Honda’s all-terrain vehicles that has made them so popular with farmers. “They have already been proven on New Zealand farms and because of the choice multipurpose utility vehicles offered by Honda, there is one for any job, no matter its level of difficulty.”
Pakohe Agriculture was founded by Rex Thomas in 1988 with its daily operations now managed by his son Sam Thomas. Sam started working in the industry at a young age on the family sheep & beef farm at Martinborough, where Pakohe Agriculture is based. After leaving college he spent the New Zealand winters in England where he worked in agricultural contracting for four seasons, before returning to work full time in the business. Rex continues to help out with Pakohe Agriculture where needed, but focuses most of his time on his farming operations. Pakohe Agriculture offers a complete service from broadacre spraying, cultivation and direct drilling. When it comes to harvest time, Pakohe Agriculture can do both large round and square baleage, and round, square and conventional hay bales. It also has a combine harvester for seed and grain harvesting. Pakohe Agriculture also has hay

WAIRARAPA DIESEL SERVICE

MARK HINTON Principal at WCM Legal
‘Hands-on’ boss enhances service
Succession planning – be courageous
Wairarapa Diesel Service (WDS) was incorporated in 2001 by Brent and Jennifer Ward.
Mark Hinton is a Principal in the Wairarapa law firm WCM Legal, based in the Carterton office and also attends the firm’s Masterton office one and a half days a week. He has succession on his mind. Not his own, but the many clients and businesses often ill-prepared for who will take over the farm, or business, and he’s calling on people to identify the issue and have the courage to discuss it, and make some clear plans. Mark’s main practice areas are property law, farming and business clients with an emphasis on resource management and local government law. He’s responsible for the firm’s technology requirements and is a member of the Law Alliance New Zealand IT Committee. Mark is also a member of the New Zealand Law Society’s Land Titles Committee which works in partnership with other stakeholders in developing, initiating and now upgrading the Land Information New Zealand’s ‘Landonline’ project. This continues to be a world leading digitalised land registration system. It’s in the area of succession planning, however, that Mark has a special interest and sees it as a major issue for the Wairarapa region. He says succession is
Brent started operating from his garage in Carterton, then a leased workshop in Ngaumutawa Road, Masterton, until 2007, when land was purchased in Edwin Feist Place at Solway. Here a custom-built five-bay heavy machinery and engineering workshop has been built, also housing a large parts and administration hub. Eight staff operate out of Edwin Feist Place – mechanics; hose doctors; engineers; apprentice mechanics; a parts and operations manager, an administrator and ‘Dofus’, the Staffordshire bull terrier, who meets and greets. Brent is a real ‘hands-on’ boss, according to his employees, and is lauded for his mentoring of apprentices. Over the years WDS has put over 10 young men through their apprenticeships, and currently has two apprentices, one nearing the end of his apprenticeship, and another who has recently signed up. WDS offers a comprehensive service on heavy machinery, hydraulics and diesel engines Wairarapa wide. The mobile service vehicles, proudly sign written
with the business signage, are regularly seen out and about in the Wairarapa hinterland. From logging equipment; excavators; utes; generators; forklifts and a variety of other diesel engines, nothing is too big or small. As RYCO agents for Wairarapa, WDS offers a 24/7 hydraulic hose repair service. Using a custom-built trailer they can offer either on-site repairs or at the workshop. For over 15 years as service agents for ‘Orchard-rite’, WDS has been servicing frost protection machines for vineyards and orchards 24/7. At the workshop you will find a parts department stocking Supercharge batteries, Valvoline Oils & Lubricants, Wurth products, and a variety of nuts, bolts and forestry equipment. As the local distributor of Air Liquide, you will also find a selection of welding, hospitality and specialty gasses. Although Brent is an active ‘on the tools’ boss working long hours in all weather conditions and hours of day, (a 24-hour service, 7 days per week is offered), he still knows how to balance his life. He has a passion for 4x4 driving in his ‘Fookin Buggy’ in events all over the country, and is keen racer and sponsor of Masterton’s drag strip.
vitally important which can often involve huge amounts of money and complex negotiation within family. Equally in most businesses and professions today, there appears to be a shortage of skilled individuals making succession planning difficult as new people are often the potential future of the business or profession. He knows of local businesses desperate for staff that are scrambling overseas searching for appropriately qualified individuals. Mark’s clear message is “Don’t leave it too late to consider who will succeed you. Think about it, way before you need to! Gone are the days when it was believed, Mum and Dad know best”. He wants families to sit down, discuss the farm or business and establish future leadership. He has seen these important discussions preserve family relationships and businesses which can otherwise be fraught, if left too late. Mark joined WCM Legal from a Hamilton practice in 1989. He is married to Maria, a private Speech and Drama teacher and examiner. They have three adult children and two grandchildren. Outside the office, Mark has an interest in aviation, and plays an active role in live theatre, both on stage and technical.

A tractor for every purpose Based at Solway, Masterton, TFM Tractors serves the rural community from Pahiatua to Wellington. It sells products that are built to withstand local conditions, and provides excellent after-sales support. TFM Tractors holds the franchise for the AGCO group of brands - Massey Ferguson, Fendt and Iseki. The Massey Ferguson 5700 series has proved particularly popular, with Massey Ferguson taking the sub-130hp tractor and reengineering it from the ground up to meet the needs of present-day farming. The 5700 Series, TFM Tractor’s top seller, is suitable for a variety of purposes and is especially popular with dairy and sheep & beef farmers. The larger Fendt models, such as the 724, have found favour with agricultural contractors while the smaller models such as the
209Vs are being used on many vineyards around Wairarapa. TFM Tractors recently started selling AGCO Green Harvest for hay gear and balers. FWL TRAYS & TRAILERS
Have your Ute turned into your perfect trade or recreation vehicle FWL Trays and Trailers can transform any Ute into a tradesperson’s workhorse by adding a service body to it. The design can be any way the customer wants. They can have as many drawers as they want with easy access along the side and rear of the service bodies, and any features they want, such as LED lights and central locking. The service bodies are ideal for trades people like builders, plumbers and electricians but the same principal can just as easily be applied to Utes for farmers, hunters and fishers who can pull up anywhere and set up camp. FWL Trays and Trailers can also upgrade the suspension of the vehicle to manage the extra weight more easily and increase ground clearance. FWL Trays and Trailers is located at Solway, Masterton, and is part of Ordish & Stevens who we know have been serving Wairarapa farmers for over 50 years, specialising in irrigation,
water reticulation and milking systems. Scott Forbes joined Ordish & Stevens in 2007 as its Operations Manager, and bought the business with wife Lisa in 2016. They created FWL Trays & Trailers three years ago to make the most of the skills of their light engineering technicians. Along with service bodies, FWL Trays & Trailers constructs ATV trays, trailers, and aluminium dog and tool boxes. Examples of its work can be seen outside the Solway building or on the FWL Facebook page.

JOE’S TYRES
Keeping Wairarapa rolling 24/7 The importance of having quality tyres on the road, and in the paddock, can’t be over-stated, especially in the depth of winter when conditions are challenging. The team at Joe’s Tyres on the corner of Villa and Wrigley Streets, Masterton, not only promote quality tyres – Kumho, Goodride, Goodyear and many others, but they have huge business experience themselves. Owned by Colin Richardson, the Commercial Fleet Manager is Hayden Bennett and Retail Manager is Karl Haustein. Karl is a specialist in car, SUV and ute tyres and wheel alignments with over 30 years of working with tyres in Australian mines, Pahiatua and Masterton. There’s a total staff of six, including Colin’s wife, Milli, who does a lot of the administration. Around 85 per cent of the work is commercial, and often in the field, and so it’s a precarious juggling act to ensure clients are cared for in a timely and professional manner. And, cared for they are as testimonials attest:
Stu Taylor - Wairarapa Livestock Transport: “Joe’s Tyres provide a full tyre check of the fleet each Saturday. They call in regularly during
the week and react quickly and efficiently when we need them. Their service is excellent. They are always obliging and they keep our fleet on the road 24/7, through quality tyre management. We wouldn’t have anyone else.”
Bill Hammond – Bill Hammond Transport: “I was the very first client of Joe’s tyres. I am an absolute believer in building strong partnerships and we have that with Joe’s Tyres. They provide us great service, great tyres and a full tyre maintenance programme. They do a full fleet check in my yard every Sunday morning, so my fleet is ready to roll on Monday. Any problems are dealt with quickly and professionally, the sign of a great partnership.”
Rhys Scott – Scott’s Ag Contracting Carterton “I want one tyre company to handle all my fleet needs and know I can leave it to them completely. For us to have machines stopped in the paddock costs a lot of money. Joe’s Tyres provides a great service, they react quickly when we need them and their professionalism and skill is much appreciated.”

CLEANING OUT THE DUNG ... an easy job with CLEANSWEEP WOOLSHEDS Clearing out the manure from under woolsheds has become easy work with Cleansweep Woolsheds. Mark and Megan Turton started the Dannevirke-based business four years ago after Mark invented a machine that goes under woolsheds and pulls out all the sheep poo. “I was giving a friend a hand to clean the manure out from under his woolshed using a big sucker machine. It was a wet day and we were spending all our time unblocking the machine. I thought there must be something easier and quicker to use for the job, but there wasn’t.” Mark came up with a hydraulic-driven rotary hoe system which goes under the shed by itself, digging along the pile line for up to 30 metres. When it is full, Mark hauls the machine out and empties it.
around, so Mark visits the farm first and gives a no-obligation quote. It is important for woolsheds to be clean, he points out. “It creates a healthy space on many levels. The sheep have good airflow if penned overnight, and they dry faster. “It also decreases wool staining, and most important of all, it reduces the ammonia smell which the shearers will appreciate.” The end product is great fertilizer that the client keeps. “Some people give it to the local school or club to sell, or they can spread it on to their paddocks.” If you have not cleaned out under your woolshed in the last 10 years, give Mark a call and he will provide you with a free quote.

Refrigeration – Air-Conditioning and Heat Pumps There’s the saying that ‘the family that plays together, stays together’. The O’Brien family goes one step further and also works together – very successfully, it seems! In 1974, Bernie O’Brien began his refrigeration and air conditioning business in Masterton and in 1980, his son Lyn purchased the business with wife, Colleen. These days, both their son and daughter work within the business. Wairarapa is booming and so is the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump industry. B.W. O’Brien is a specialised refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump business, which is able to find a solution for any area whether it be the home, the office, the farm or the café.
B.W. O’Brien works with its clients to design, install, service and maintain all commercial refrigeration.
The system is highly versatile, being able to be used for any type of woolshed, and it handles the lowest of sheds. It can also be used to clean count out pens.
Because the bulk of the work is being done automatically from outside the shed, it is not labour intensive, and is fast and cost-effective.

“Underneath the shed is a horrible place to be for obvious reasons, but by using the Clean Sweep machine you don’t have to be amongst it.”
The machine is able to grind off the hardest of deposits and doesn’t get clogged when the ground is wet.

IRRIGATION SERVICES: SOLAR PUMPING EFFECTIVE FARM SOLUTION BEN COULSON Wairarapa Manager
Solar pumping offers answers the header tank. “There is no electrical cost, and because it is a straight solar system there is no extra cost of batteries to store the power.” The size of the header tank needs to be calculated to accommodate this. Banks of solar panels are needed in a securefrom-stock position to run the system. “This is a relatively simple system, which has the added benefit of being good for the environment,” Ben says. With no fuel or electricity costs, the system can be self-sufficient, installed wherever the farmer’s water source is, no matter how remote. A capacity to pump both clean and dirty water makes for a robust farm solution. Wairarapa Manager Ben Coulson Solar pumping of farm water offers an effective and environmentally sustainable solution, Irrigation Services (Wairarapa) Manager Ben Coulson believes. Ben says there has been increasing demand from farmers looking at better farm water supply answers. Using solar pumping technology saves the cost of hard-wiring electricity to the site of the pump which in some cases can be some distance from existing electrical supply. “Local farmers have been working with the Greater Wellington Regional Council to fence stock from waterways; in some cases this has meant new water supply systems need to be developed,” Ben says. To comply with water quality regulations and to enhance Farm Environmental Management Plans, keeping stock from a stream which feeds Lake Wairarapa was a must-do for one farmer. In this case, an Isaacs EPump was selected to pump water to a header tank, then water is gravity-fed to a network of farm troughs. The solar unit is capable of pumping 8000 litres/day to
The addition of telemetry to the system enables the farmer to monitor the level of water in the tanks, and leak detection from the comfort of his phone.
About Irrigation Services The company, with branches also in Hastings and Cromwell, has been operating in Wairarapa for more than a decade, after first opening its doors at 181 Ngaumutawa Rd, Masterton in 2005. Ben says the company prides itself on low maintenance and practical solutions. “We like to cut to the chase and find what farmers and growers need without adding any unnecessary complication,” he says. Ben is backed up by an experienced design team in the Hastings office; they are able to apply the best science and engineering in order to deliver the optimum solution to suit any irrigation, effluent or frost protection requirements. Irrigation Services stands by its work: “Our hydraulic solutions have been tested and proven,” Ben says. The company has FDE accreditation (Farm Dairy

competition when he was within five seconds of making the finals, or the time in 1991, when he was Senior Champion.
That’s where Pete Clendon steps in and is able to talk from firsthand experience when selling vehicles at the Eastwood Motor Group in Masterton’s Dixon Street.
From the age of 15, he was shearing sheep, achieving 100 in his first day. He expresses joy at being able to run a shearing gang with his father in the King Country for many years.
“Take the Hyundai Santa Fe. It’s a brilliant vehicle, all-wheel drive, diesel, plenty of power, sound touring capacity and still a family wagon, when necessary.”
Pete and his wife Kathleen moved to Masterton where his wife was born and raised.
Pete says it’s one of their most popular sellers. The Isuzu Mu-X is also popular with its seven seats and 3-ton towing capacity. His enthusiasm for the cars he sells, is mirrored by his talk of shearing. His eyes light up and he immediately reminisces of the days at the Golden Shears
He continued to shear sheep until “his back cried stop” and he had to look for alternative ways of making a living. Selling vehicles and having the rural experience is invaluable and he is able to talk knowledgably to his customers. “Repeat clients are always great to deal with and it’s good to welcome ‘walk-ins’ as well.”
Machines to suit all needs Robin Parker’s Roading and Contracting operation can deal with all jobs town and country. Pictured above is the latest addition to his fleet. It’s a Hitachi 5.5 ton excavator fully equipped with a range of buckets and drilling augers. It’s an ideal size to be a ‘serious digger’ and able to work in more confined areas. Other diggers in the fleet consist of a 24-ton CAT 320, 22-ton Kato, 14-ton Hyundai and 12-ton Mitsi. For the bigger earthmoving jobs, there is a construction grader and a Moxy 25-ton dump truck. Over the past year Robin and his team have been involved with various subdivisions with road construction and installation of power and other services. These include Chester Road, Norfolk Road, Millar’s Road and coastal Tora, to name a few, with others in the pipeline. Farm work makes up a large part of his operation also, with
Parker’s Roading and Contracting’s Komatsu D58E-1 20-ton bulldozer all forms of roading, tracks, cow race maintenance, dams, digging, grading, metalling, along with forestry roading maintenance. Other equipment in his fleet are two MAN trucks and trailers, a Komatsu 20-ton bulldozer and combi roller and tractor grader. DAYTECH ENGINEERING
A Wealth of Knowledge and Experience at your Service
Farm machinery designs with flair If you’re hankering about a new piece of machinery for the farm, or any property really, and you want it made to last – Stuart Day and his team at Daytech Engineering on Masterton’s Lincoln Road are the people to see.
within. They are powder coated or galvanised steelwork with a bit of paint to add colour and appeal.
Stuart knew from the day he left school and walked into Donald Presses in Masterton that working with steel and engineering was to be his life’s work. From building things in the implement shed on his Gladstone farm nearly 30 years ago, he moved to establish a workshop in Masterton, which eventually doubled in size, as his business grew. He loves the strength and versatility of steel, coupled with paint finishes to give a bit of class and finesse. “We like to do things well. If someone comes into the workshop with a desire for a machine, we love the challenge of designing and creating. But it’s always the GLX version we’ll go for – not the GL. If you want a trailer with two wheels to take rubbish to the dump once a week, that’s not us.” Stuart’s robust trailers all have tandem wheels, well-siders and flat decks and stock crates to fit
It’s not necessary admits Stuart but it sets their designs apart from just any equipment. The conveyor belts created for handling sheep come with padded beading around sharp corners, so the sheep don’t knock and harm themselves. As for the wood splitter, in its red and blue splendour, it’s a mechanised sculpture of robust beauty. Within reason, anything goes to be created and made at Daytech. They are even offering tiny house trailers ranging from 3m to 8m long. Stuart is assisted by four fitters/ welders and fabricators – Ken Gooden, Stuart Watts, Joe Stevens, and Phil Buddell. Wife, Jill does the administration for the business. Fresh back from the Mystery Creek Field Days, the team are brimming with design ideas. This year Stuart was presented with a book commemorating the field days’ 50 anniversary. Stuart has represented Daytech Engineering at the field days consecutively for 29 years, except for 1997, when his son was born.

Tim Falloon This month marks 21 years since Tim Falloon took his first steps into real estate. Over the past two decades Tim has sold over $160 million in predominantly farm and lifestyle properties. For the 20 years prior to that, Tim had been a sheep and beef farmer in North Wairarapa. “Real estate was something that I always had an interest in, our children had grown up so the move into real estate was an easy one with a continued interest in property.” He has loved meeting and working with some wonderful people and the Wairarapa has attracted people from all walks of life and from all over the world. With the internet making the biggest change meaning a lot of people can work from home. Tim has been in real estate management for the past 16 years, the last four of those as Manager of Farmland’s first real estate office in the North Island in Masterton. Demand for rural properties is outstripping supply at present, Tim says. “It’s a healthy time for vendors with lots of multiple offers for both farms and lifestyle properties.” The most notable feature of the market is how many of the buyers are coming from outside the Wairarapa. Tim has no plans to retire, although he is enjoying spending more family time with his children and grandchildren. He still keeps his hand in farming by occasionally helping out his son. “I still feel like a farmer at heart.”

SCOTT REID
JAKE HAWKINS
Offering Rolls Royce butchery
Have blades, will travel
Scott Reid dices meat with a razor sharp knife at a speed which makes your eyes water. You hope he doesn’t miss the huge chunk of beef clutched in his other hand.
If you’ve eyed up a perfectly trimmed treeline or hedge row in Wairarapa, chances are Jake Hawkins has been there with his machine.
Owner
Scotty’s butchery skills have been honed over decades. He is described beautifully by Deborah Coddington in her book ‘The Good Life on Te Muna Road’. “Scott Reid, shoulders some six axe-handles wide, hands as large as hams, piercing blue eyes and haircut like an American marine. His fans – we’re not merely customers – claim he’s the best butcher in New Zealand, if not the world. Scotty might be the world’s worst speller, but he’s gifted when it comes to ageing and butchering meat.” Born in the 1960s, he’s of the ‘old school’ butchers, completing an apprenticeship, and working in the 1980s at a myriad of meat processing places, and several butchers around the Wellington area and at the former Waingawa Freezing Works. He is especially fond of his time at Taylor Preston,
an export meat processing plant in Wellington, where he believes ‘real butchers’ were trained. Scotty stresses it’s not just being a good butcher that’s important but having good farm suppliers who can guarantee quality meat. He accepts his meat from just a carefully chosen handful of Wairarapa farms. “They know I’ll toss it back at them, if they give me rubbish,” he laughs. Scotty and his partner Shirley live in Featherston and when the Martinborough butchery came up for sale, they grabbed the chance to have their own business – and are now the proud specialists of sausages, ham and bacon. His quality meat has become so popular and indeed ‘famous’ that he also runs a wholesale business supplying many outlets. He gets help too from loyal locals - Reece Everson, Glenn Dixon and Rawari Namana are among the names he reels off. There are changes afoot with the Jellicoe Street building his shop is in, so keep an eye out for Scotty, wherever he lands!
BEST BUTCHER IN TOWN!
Jake comes from a varied rural background and knows how important it is to keep shelter belts under control and effective. A well maintained hedge shelters stock, crops and homesteads and can be vital for living on the Wairarapa valley floor, subject to high winds from all directions. Originally from an agricultural background, in the past five years he’s been working as operations manager in the rural sector until he decided to branch out on his own, purchasing the purposebuilt hedge trimmer. The impressive attachment on the tractor features five 750 diameter blades which will top up to 15 metres.
His services have been in high demand too. Jake is based in Martinborough, where he lives with his wife, Kirsty, and two children, but he’ll go all over Wairarapa to trim hedges. Jake is also well known for his volunteer fire fighting, having served 25 years in the Martinborough brigade. So, keep an eye out for his black ute with impressive colourful signage or for the similarly impressive tractor unit shaping a hedgerow in a paddock.

ERIC VOICE Owner
The gorse and scrub gobbler Eric Voice’s yellow gorse gobbling machine is small and perfectly formed. When turned off and tucked away, it looks innocuous, harmless and inoffensive. However, with the press of the remote control button on Eric’s belt, it fires into action and marches off to create an impressive display of scrub clearance and track building. Officially known as a Forest Mulcher and nick-named the ‘gorse gobbler’, this tiny tank clambers over ground up to 55 degree slopes and can be controlled remotely from over 150 metres away, coping with vegetation up to 100mm in diameter. So, if you’ve ever wanted to remove that cursed gorse, blackberry, wilding pines or other unwanted vegetation, Eric and his machine are the ones to call. It’s a great organic solution too as land can be cleared without the use of chemicals. The 1200mm cutting width easily cuts tracks through dense bush, especially great for quad bike and cycle access. Eric has had calls from many lower North
Island locations and recently cut tracks for opossum hunters in the Wainuiomata valley. The increased interest in accessing Manuka for the bee-keeping industry has also meant the call for tracks to be cut into wooded hillsides. The gorse gobbler is the latest addition to the company Eric established some 15 years ago, Agile Property Services. It offers to find people properties, manage and maintain them in the owner’s absence and provide a tenancy service. It also does homestay management. A coachbuilder by trade, Eric worked as a lab technician at Masterton Hospital and at the pasteurising plant in Worksop Road, Masterton. When he and his wife, Tracy re-located a house to just out of Martinborough with commanding views of the Wairarapa valley, he started noticing the pockets of gorse dotting the landscape. An idea to offer a vegetation clearing service was born and his interest in machinery was sated when he found the gorse gobbler.

We are confident that we have the highest performing, reliable and efficient disc drill on the market. We get a lot of positive feedback and good yarns from our customers or operators, it’s what continues to drive me if I’m honest.”
Craig designs all the drills himself with a state-of-the-art computer-aided design (CAD) program. Each drill is designed with extremely low future maintenance costs in mind; word has been given from many customers that these are the easiest, most reliable, and costeffective machines they have run. The majority of each machine is manufactured in the Ashburton workshop, where Allen Custom Drills welcomes all visitors to tour, meet the people within the company and see the creation of drills from the ‘ground up’.
A new aspect to the business is selling parts; all parts are on the shelf at realistic prices in the Ashburton workshop, with most of them able to be couriered overnight.
Allen Custom Drills has five base model drills, established from previous design experience and success. Drills are built to order, and customers can make additions and/or alterations to the base model of the drill to suit them and the needs of their job(s). The C-D (Contour Drill) Series is the most popular Allen Custom Drills for contractors and larger scale farmers. It incorporates a

Craig says, “It’s a strong robust product. We continue to pride ourselves on quality and durability and won’t compromise on reliability or strength. Any component incorporated into our product has to meet a very high expectation and perform.
“We often show people an Allen drill at work so that they can see exactly how they operate and the results they give. “I can safely say that any customer of ours is happy for us to call in with a person thinking of an Allen drill, jump in the cab and see the drill run. I enjoy it, so if you would like to know more about our drills, give us a call,” Craig says.

With farm effluent, and its distribution, becoming a major issue for farmers, agricultural contractors Shane and Sonya Gray of Grays Contracting in Carterton, have invested in a machine which they believe has both an environmental and sustainable outcome. Being ag contractors, as well as dairy farmers, they understand the compliance issues farmers face. They have added a Slurryquip Umbilical system to their fleet of machinery. It is the only one in Wairarapa and they are really pleased with the feedback and results to date. The slurryquip dribble bar is towed behind a tractor which carries a reel of hose through which the effluent is pumped from holding ponds. The umbilical system discharges four times faster than conventional tankers and there is no worry about damage to tracks from a heavy tanker. In comparison, a tractor and slurryquip dribble bar will weigh in at around 12 tonnes and
distribute the effluent direct to the soil, without the need to leave the paddock. The slurryquip bar also gives an even spread of effluent across the width of the machine due to the hydraulically-driven distributor. There’s also a reduction in odour as the effluent is directed on to the ground, minimising exposure to the volatilisation of ammonia – the number one cause of odour. There is also no wind drift pollution either, as the machine is not propelling the liquid through the air, like in the splash plate arrangement. Farm effluent ponds can be completely emptied in one visit over a short period, a preferable environmental requirement. Shane is a fourth generation agricultural contractor and along with Sonya, they operate their contracting business from their depot at Park Road, Carterton, where they also run a 450-cow dairy farm.

FAGAN MOTORS
Friendly professional service at Fagan Motors The team at Fagan Motors love dealing with the rural community and consider it central to what they do. “At the end of the day, everyone in Wairarapa is connected to the rural community in some way or other,” says Sales Manager Terence O’Hara. “We love dealing with people that come from the rural sector - the shearers, fencing contractors, stock agents and farmers. They are the ‘salt of the earth’ people.” Fagan Motors has been in business for 87 years in Masterton, and has seen the town grow from
a sleepy rural town into a thriving town within a strong rural region. Over that time Ford Motors have built strong relationships with their rural customers, many of which have been loyal throughout generations of families. Fagan Motors are hugely supportive of the community, and the rural community in particular, supporting all sorts of initiatives such as the Castlepoint Races, Tinui dog trials and equestrian events. Fagan Motors are probably most well known and appreciated for their significant support of
Life Flight, a crucial service in Wairarapa. The most popular vehicle the team sells within the rural sector, is the Ford Ranger. “It’s good looking, hard working, well-performing, well equipped and versatile. You can’t go wrong with a Ford Ranger Double Cab Ute,” says Terence. As well as doing all the hard jobs you need a ute to do, the Ford Ranger has amazing technology available, such as voice-activated features that control temperature, or read your text messages to you while you’re driving! It will also
keep you safe, ensuring you slow down when getting close to other cars – even while in cruise control mode. The team at Fagan Motors are always ready to help find the best vehicle for any job. Come and have a chat with Keith Allen, Terence O’Hara, Jason Farley, Stephen Parkinson or Nick McGruddy to see how they can help. “Every business needs our rural sector to do well,” says Terence. “The agricultural sector is firmly entrenched in our region and we are hugely grateful for that.”
