Langlands Motorcycles here to help farmers When farmers come into Langlands Motorcycles, they know there will be three sales staff who understand what they are looking for. Grant Langland established the business in 1994 and has been selling ATVs, Side-By-Sides and motorcycles to Wairarapa’s rural community ever since. Grey Martin grew up on a dairy farm at Kahutara in South Wairarapa and has been selling Hondas with Langlands for over ten years.

Brock Surridge, born and bred in Masterton, has been a keen dirt biker for many years and is a fully qualified motorcycle mechanic turned salesperson. Honda Motorcycles sells more ATVs and Side-By-Sides in New Zealand than any brand, with a large number of them ending up on New Zealand farms.

In many cases though, Grant points out, farmers usually know what works for them and often purchase the latest model of a Honda they are already happy with. Honda also offers a range of two wheelers that dairy farmers in particularly find a less expensive, but never-the-less effective tool.

2020 3 Parkers Roading and Contracting

Robin Parker (left) and co-worker Ross Anderson in front of their fleet of trucks.

Earthmoving made easy With decades of experience behind him, and an impressive fleet of vehicles at his disposal, no earthwork job is too challenging for Robin Parker and his team. Based on Kokotau Road, Parkers Roading and Contracting specialises in road construction, maintenance and excavation services from a simple driveway, to a dressage training ground, to a major farm irrigation system, to a sprawling new subdivision. “Town or country, if you need earthworks done, we can offer a full range of services,” Robin says. “Basically, anything that requires a digger, we can do it.” Roading makes up a large chunk of the business - including laying, metalling and reinforcing roads, residential driveways, access ways, and forestry roading, as well as maintenance and re-surfacing of existing drives and roads. Over the past couple of years, the Parkers’ team has been kept busy installing roading and driveways at new subdivisions throughout Wairarapa, particularly in and around Carterton, Featherston, Masterton, and as far away as Tora. And, thanks to the region’s everexpanding population, there’s plenty more work to be done.

“The subdivisions are the bigger jobs - they can take several weeks, and use the range of our machinery,” Robin says. ‘We’ve got many more in the pipeline.” Farm work also makes up a large part of the Parkers’ operation - including the creation of farm tracks, digging of effluent ponds, offal pits, culverts, and dams and grading and metalling roads and tracks. Parkers also offers land clearing with its 20 tonne Komutsu Bull Dozer.

Today people are spoiled for choice when it comes to what they can watch on TV - free-to-air, Sky, TV On Demand, Netflix, YouTube and more.

New to the fleet are two Mitsubishi Fuso trucks for bulk cartage of materials, including a full range of grades of metal available from Parkers metal yard, as well as trailers, graders and rollers. Robin says he enjoys “seeing a project through from beginning to end, and helping customers achieve their vision”.

For homes with satellite dishes, these often need parts replaced or realignment, he says.

A demanding work schedule - but one made easier by Robin’s dedicated drivers and operators, and powerful fleet of vehicles and diggers. These include a CAT320 excavator, 14 tonne Hyundai, an ‘old faithful’ Mitsubishi 12 tonne, a 20 tonne KATO for metal extraction, and a 5.5 tonne Hitachi complete with tilt buckets and augers for drilling.

2020 5 Dung Beetle Innovations

Plenty of reasons to release dung beetles There are two things farmers like - a sure bet, and exponential growth. With dung beetles they get both. Plus Wairarapa farmers enjoy the bonus of a 50 per cent discount on the purchase price of their dung beetles, thanks to funding from Greater Wellington Regional Council. Over 70 Wairarapa farmers have already got their dung beetles from Dung Beetle Innovations, which is commercially selling them in New Zealand. Dung Beetle Innovations was founded by two dung beetle enthusiasts. Andrew Barber project managed the Dung Beetle Release Strategy Group, an MPI farmer-led project to import dung beetles into New Zealand, while internationally recognised entomologist Dr Shaun Forgie was the lead scientist for the project. Inspired by their desire to see the dung beetle improve New Zealand’s soils and waterways, the two men established Dung Beetle Innovations as a commercial enterprise.

Andrew points out this is a one-off cost, with no further spending or maintenance required. There are 11 species allowed in New Zealand with seven presently in production.

Raising dung beetles is like planting trees, says Andrew. “It takes two or three years to get established. Then by about year five there is a noticeable population. Around year nine they are at the farm’s carry capacity and start fanning out.”

For $6000, or just $3000 in the GWRC partnership programme, the dung beetles will bring multiple benefits to a farm and pay for themselves in greater farm productivity, Andrew says.

where service isn’t promised - it’s delivered

Payment Plan takes pain out of breakdowns Unexpected costs are one of the farmer’s biggest headaches. Often they are caused by an unexpected automotive or mechanical failure. Which is why Lamberts Engineering has introduced its new Monthly Payment Plan.

The Plan is available to everyone, not just farmers - agricultural contractors, forestry businesses, apiarists, lifestyle property owners and anyone who can see the benefit of it.

As the name suggests, the Plan allows regular monthly payments, based on previous years’ typical annual expenses. For example, if a dairy farm spends around $20,000 a year, their monthly payments would be a little over $1600. With the plan the price will be tailored to what the client feels comfortable paying per month. Being able to manage a major cost blow-out is only one of the benefits of the Plan however. The Plan includes 24/7 call outs with no call-out fee within normal trading hours. After hours will incur a nominal charge. Clients on the plan will receive priority service, no mileage charge and all hours will be charged at a discounted rate. So overall the plan will save time and money.

So any business can take advantage of Lamberts Engineering’s Mobile Engineering Workshop. The call-outs will be handled by Tom Scott who is a qualified engineer, trained in hydraulics and also a diesel mechanic. Tom was trained by Lamberts’ co-owner John Brogden and has just returned from nine years in Australia. Tom will come out to any workplace to fix problems with farm machinery, trucks, utes, tractors, milking sheds, hydraulics, electrical, irrigation equipment and anything else.

Irrigation Services

Waste not, want not: making the most of dairy effluent Dairy effluent: a common feature in milking sheds, an environmental headache for territorial authorities and, if used correctly, liquid gold for farmers. That’s where Irrigation Services comes in – offering the Wairarapa dairy community practical and low-maintenance solutions for keeping paddocks fertilised and waterways protected. Irrigation Services, in operation since 1995, specialises in the design and supply of irrigation systems – assisting farmers, crop growers and viticulturists with water storage and distribution. The company, which has offices in Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa and Central Otago, installs systems to meet a range of requirements, including paddock hydration, crop maintenance, effluent spreading, and frost protection. Wairarapa Manager Ben Coulson says his Masterton team has been kept busy helping farmers with effluent storage and discharge – a pressing concern in the agricultural sector in light of environmental concerns and stricter regulations.

We keep things “ straightforward. We like to cut

to the chase and find out what farmers need without adding any unnecessary complications.”

The company is Farm Dairy Effluent System Design Accredited, meaning it can complete an effluent storage assessment applying the Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator to evaluate effluent management systems. IS Dam Lining is the only pond lining company in New Zealand that is FDE Accredited, so we know the full principals and mechanics of the design system from the milking shed to the paddock.

Effluent is ubiquitous on dairy farms – on average, a dairy cow produces two to four litres of waste for every litre of milk. When milking sheds are hosed down, the result is close to 67 million litres of effluent produced each milking year. To prevent the flow of waste into water bodies, farmers are opting to store effluent, using either ponds or lined dams, and spread it over their pastures using a travelling irrigator or sprinkler system. With more Wairarapa farmers now conscious of their environmental responsibilities, Ben says quality irrigation systems are in high demand.

Ben Coulson, Wairarapa Manager.

out, and effluent spreaders are now noncompliant with regulations – so farmers are looking to upgrade. “It’s up to us to install the systems which use the least amount of infrastructure, are the most cost-effective for the farmers, and which help make the best use of waste.”

“Our workload has pretty much doubled over the last year.

Ben says discharging effluent to land is not only beneficial to waterways, but is a valuable resource to farmers – acting as natural liquid fertiliser.

“A lot of resource consents [allowing discharge into waterways] are running

known among farmers as “liquid gold”. Irrigation Services can install a variety of systems to facilitate effluent spreading – including a travelling cannon device, which can disperse effluent over a wide distance in a short period of time. “We use the Torpedo brand, which is very efficient and easy to use,” Ben says. “We want to make sure paddocks are getting the nutrients they need, and in the right areas.” Irrigation Services is also able to help farmers establish effluent storage – such

Ben and the Wairarapa team are backed up by an experienced design team in the Hastings office – able to apply science and engineering in order to deliver the optimum solution to suit each individual farm. “We are the only company [in Wairarapa] that specialises in irrigation as our core business – and our hydraulic solutions have been tested and proven,” Ben says. “We keep things straightforward. We like to cut to the chase and find out what farmers need without adding any unnecessary complications.”

She points out that the Lincoln Road store’s huge range of products cater to both rural and urban customers. Not surprisingly, there are many products directed at farmers from fencing, to agricultural chemicals, seed, animal health, stock feed and irrigation. But there are just as many that are useful for lifestyle and urban residents, such as animal feed and nutrition, pet supplies, and home and garden supplies and general merchandise.

Paul says, the circular nature of the business means that Seeds & Cereals can ensure total quality control from planting to harvest and sale. “This means that our growers know they are buying a quality product.”

Bruce points out that one of the important features of Seeds & Cereals is that it is a privately owned business.

Gemma points out that the Technical Advisers visit farms regularly, and even more often during the growing season.

“We have access to a huge diversity of products and knowledge that can be tailored to suit a particular region and individual farming enterprise.”

Proud to keep Wairarapa rolling 24/7 Business didn’t slow down for Joe’s Tyres during the Covid-19 lockdown. The lockdown occurred at a busy time in autumn for farmers and agricultural contractors. Classed as an “essential service”, the team at Joe’s Tyres travelled all over Wairarapa, fixing punctures, tyre damage, and any other issues.

The lockdown experience was typical of the Masterton business’ commitment to its customers, says owner Colin Richardson. “We make every effort to provide quick service for our agricultural clients.” Among the clients helped during the lockdown was Scott’s Ag Contracting. Managing Director Rhys Scott says Joe’s Tyres was always available for call-out work during the lockdown, fixing all types of tyre problems.

The importance of having quality tyres on the road, and in the paddock, can’t be over-stated, Colin says, “especially in the depth of winter when conditions are challenging”. Joe’s Tyres is a family business owned by Colin and wife Milli, who does a lot of the administration. There are six staff including Commercial Fleet Manager Hayden Bennett.

“We’ve always found them prompt and reliable. There were no hold-ups which is very important for our business.” Around 85 per cent of Joe’s Tyre’s work is commercial, and often in the field.

A tradition of quality and dependability since 1920

Pakohe Lime Company has been supplying Wairarapa with agricultural lime for over 70 years.

■ improve the uptake of major plant nutrients (NPK) Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium

It is the only lime quarry south of Carterton, located in hill country to the southeast of Martinborough.

■ improve water penetration in your soil

The quarry was established in 1938 by JP McMaster on the family farm. Three generations later it is still a family-operated business, run by the founder’s grandson Rob McMaster, helped along by fourth generation quarry worker Jamie McMaster. A visiting geologist has said the lime deposits in the quarry are from eight to 10 million years old. He also said “the lime at Pakohe is very high in quality” and “is a soft lime which is very porous and readily available to plant life”. The most common way to increase soil pH is lime (CaCO3 or MgCO3) in the form of finely ground agricultural lime. It can be used to: ■ neutralise soil acidity ■ encourage micro-organism and earthworm activity resulting in better soil structure

■ maximise crop yield ■ improve the quality of your silage and hay ■ improve animal health ■ increase milk production ■ counteract leaching from excessive rainfall ■ improve both your pasture and your profit Pakohe Lime Company is open Mondays to Fridays to supply agricultural lime, raceway lime, driveway lime, silage pit base lime, and ornamental lime rocks. The quarry is seven kilometres along Dry River Road from the Lake Ferry Road turn-off. For orders and more information contact Rob on (06) 306 9638 or (027) 476 1745 Email pakohelime@gmail.com

Sharpes Stock Feeds

Stock Ezy NZ

Making life easier for sheep farmers Stock Ezy is a new family-owned business. Sean Blenkin was a shearer as well as working on farms in Wairarapa, and for an animal handling company in Australia. He has maintained a passion for the industry and is now working with farmers and shearing contractors to improve, perfect and develop new products. The designs come from years of watching the behaviour of farmers and animals, and a good dose of common sense. You can see videos of them in action at www.stockezynz.com Sam, Lucy, William, Olivia and Sara Orsborn, and Ollie the jack russell.

Wool Fadge Pack Holder

Quality stockfeed – 121 years and counting Over 120 years in operation, three generations at the helm, customers all over the lower North Island, ecofriendly and modern tech solutions, Sharpes Stock Feeds is up there with some of Wairarapa’s dynamic rural enterprises.

In addition to a quality product and strong client relationships, Sharpes is always looking at ways to be innovative– last year launching a mobile app. The app works by allowing farmers to set themselves up as a user, and place their order from anywhere, anytime.

The Carterton-based business has come a long way since it was established in 1899 – based in Petone, and catering to small farms.

The farmer is then alerted when their order has been dispatched. Farmers can also view their order history, and simply repeat orders.

Alan Orsborn bought Sharpes from founder John Sharpe in 1937, and eventually moved the manufacturing operation to Francis Line in 1980, where son Alastair Orsborn took over.

“We wanted to make life easier for our farmer clients in that busy time of year,” Sara says.

These days, under the leadership of Alastair and son Sam Orsborn, Sharpes Stock Feeds produces about 18,000 tonnes of stockfeed per year, and serves farming communities and businesses as far as Manawatu, Whanganui, Taranaki, and Hawke’s Bay. Sara Orsborn, Sam’s wife and marketing manager, attributes Sharpes’ success to a “consistent and quality product”, made from locally-sourced grains.

“At the moment, this will be great for calf rearers, who are ordering tonne loads of feed onto the farm.” Sharpes displayed its inventive traits yet again this year, creating a range of biodegradable feed bags for their poultry feed. These bags are made from recycled paper and cotton thread. Sam says one of the family’s proudest moments was being inducted into the Wellington Region Business Hall of Fame last year, in recognition of their contribution to the region’s economy.

The fold-away fadge holder was a development from Sean’s shearing days. Used for the 60th Golden Shears, the holder got very favourable reviews, cutting the fadge replacement time from three and a half, to one minute. It is light, tough, and structurally sound, with no weld joints or pins to lose. After requests from gardeners around New Zealand Sean has added wheels to the design as well as a floor to keep the fadge off the ground. It still folds up for easy storage and transport.

Stock Ezy Ewe Cradle Cross-frame cradles for supporting pregnant ewes have been around for many years. Sean has brought their best features together in a design made for today’s sheep. With farmers aiming for multiple births, pregnant ewes are much heavier and their udders bigger. The Stock Ezy cradle frame is width and height adjustable, supporting ewes from 40kg to 120kg. It is lightweight and easy-to-use with breathable fabric. Farmers can use it for sleepy sickness, cast ewes, bearing ewes, and mothering on lambs. When the farmer comes across a downer on his daily rounds, he can secure it in the cradle.

He then treats the ewe, carries on with his work, and returns later to release the animal when it is more stable on its feet again.

Backstop For Sheep Races

Two backstops are bolted to the side of the race – one near the front and one at the back. Each backstop has an arm that the sheep pushes past as they go up the race. 2020 15 Poto College House

Blackbelt Farm Fencing

Encouraging academic and sporting success

Plenty of stock sense behind fencing business

Poto College House provides a home away from home for many of the students who attend Wairarapa College. Located within the grounds of the college, Poto College House is the only co-educational boarding establishment on the East Coast. This makes it an attractive option for families who live rurally and would otherwise have to travel hundreds of kilometres each day to get their children to school. But it is the academic and sporting success of its boarders which is also encouraging parents to send their children to the hostel. Poto College House offers casual and full-time boarding up to five and a half days a week, till Saturday morning. The girls are accommodated in Wellwood and boys in Blackwood, with shared recreational areas, lounges, computer rooms, and expansive outdoor recreational facilities. The hostel has its own dining room and chef, with students enjoying breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. The walls of the hostel are lined with students who have achieved academic, sporting and cultural success in the past, including many head boys and girls.

The routines of the hostel make succeeding academically easier, says manager Stacey Grant. There are set times for homework with support from fellow students, tutors, and Wairarapa College teachers if needed.

Farming and fencing run in the blood of Jason and Michele Hood who started Blackbelt Farm Fencing last year. They both grew up on farms in Wairarapa, Jason on a sheep & beef farm, and Michele on a dairy farm.

Poto College House is also an excellent environment for students who harbour sporting ambitions, says Stacey.

The couple have run a dairy farm together in the past, and now live on a 2ha lifestyle property.

Previously the Development Officer for Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Union and last year the sports co-ordinator for Makoura College, Stacey is able to help them achieve their goals.

Jason has been fencing for 20 years and last year the couple decided to start their own fencing business, with a brand new 100hp Massey Ferguson 5710 tractor with sidemounted post rammer.

Stacey lives on site, as does the hostel’s matron Sharon Haeata, and three pairs of house parents.

Jason can do all types of fencing conventional, electric, post & rail, equine, deer, and goat.

Poto College House provides a whanau environment with everyone supporting each other, says Stacey.

Blackbelt Farm Fencing can build decorative fences for lifestyle properties, or construct cattle yards.

“It helps students to prepare for life when they leave school. They learn to be independent and accountable, with each student having domestic chores they have to carry out. The students make good friendships and lifelong bonds.”

The side-mounted post rammer is particularly convenient for fence repairs and fencing of drains and waterways.

WAIRARAPA’S ONLY CO-EDUCATIONAL BOARDING FACILITY

POTO COLLEGE HOUSE

THIS IS OUR PLACE Casual and full time boarding options from year 9 to year 13 are available.

Because of Jason’s experience and knowledge, he is able to advise on every aspect of fencing from choice of materials to the position of gates, using the “stock sense” he has developed over many years of working with animals.

WE HIT THE HIGH MARKS FOR YOU • • • • •

Along with fences, Jason can put his hand to just about anything on lifestyle properties, including building heritage gates, installing water trough systems, building chook houses, and general digger work. Jason sources all the materials unless the client wants to provide their own. He is assisted by highly experienced fencers Ash Casey and Liam Evans, with a quality job always their number one priority. Michele takes care of accounts and invoices. Jason is happy to visit property owners to give a free estimate on their fencing needs. For more information Phone Michele on 027 977 4428 or Jason on 027 308 2084.

Forest360: Planting trees that meet your needs

Farming for the Future

Right species right place is important, whether that be a red and white Hereford on the hill, or poplars or native trees. Forest360 can help you make informed decisions on the best land use options for you and your farm business. Forest360 is a full-service forestry company. They provide specialist advice from what to plant where, what that means for the environment and your pocket, along with ETS services, forest establishment/management, and harvesting and marketing. Forest360’s focus is about adding value to all forest species for their owners. Matt and Lynley Wyeth of Spring Valley Farms say, “We are firm believers that you never plant a native for yourself. It is the next generations that will reap the benefits. This year we have fenced off 8km of river, 40 hectares of land and are currently in the process of spot spraying for 30,000 natives.

“We regularly see missed ETS and planting opportunities on farms such as: ■ Poplar and willow spaced planting ■ Riparian areas ■ Wetland areas ■ Native vegetation There is a large amount of grant assistance currently available for planting.

Forest360 has been an important part of the process, assisting us with applying to the 1 Billion Trees scheme for a grant and determining what the best course of action for that land area looks like.”

For riparian areas or marginal hill country, trees could be an option to increase earning potential.

Michelle McCabe, Team Leader of the Land Use team based in Masterton, explains

We have helped them access funding, enabling them to do what they have always wanted to.”

Many landowners want to plant but do not have the funds.

WE ADD VALUE AT EVERY STAGE OF THE GROWTH CYCLE Our Services • On farm land use assessments – financial modelling, carbon profiles, marginal land options & grant funding assistance. • Carbon & ETS advice including the sale/purchase of credits. • Change of forest ownership/succession advice (ETS implications). • Forest management and operations, e.g. planting, spraying, thinning, pruning.

Servicing dairy farms, lifestyle blocks, rural households, domestic, industrial and commercial customers; the company is owned and operated by Wairarapa couple Gordon and Wendy Mouldey, backed by a staff of 13 – designers, electricians/pump technicians, store and admin staff at their extensive Belvedere Road premises in Carterton. As farmers and irrigation industry professionals know, water is a finite resource. Its availability for irrigation can at best create additional stress for farm management, and at worst result in significant losses in production as growing populations and lower summer rainfall levels result in more frequent and unpredictable water restrictions. One solution being explored by several Wairarapa irrigators is private water storage. Irrigation New Zealand and the Government have identified the “transformational opportunity” that water storage offers to the post-Covid economic recovery, and to irrigators in general. While private storage is not a viable solution for every farm, it is an avenue worth investigating as it offers a wide range of benefits such as greater control and predictability of irrigation restrictions, lower vulnerability to regulatory changes, a safe habitat for wildlife, and water budgeting flexibility among others. Water is typically collected in the storage facility from the surrounding

land during the winter months when high flows would usually go unused, with a set flow maintained all year round in a dedicated bypass to allow waterborne wildlife passage through the facility. During the irrigation season, water is taken from the storage facility instead of a bore or surface take, allowing the streams and aquifers to continue their natural passage during what would normally be a high stress period. GV Electrical & Pumping Ltd has partnered with Grundfos New Zealand to develop an industry-leading pumping solution to allow storage users to get the most out of their investments. The resulting system utilises some of the most energy efficient electric motors available which, when coupled with an irrigation system designed specifically for the unique conditions of the site, provides farmers with a predictable, reliable, and stress-free asset that allows them to spend less time worrying about water, and more time farming. Gordon Mouldey, Managing Director of GV Electrical & Pumping, believes that Wairarapa’s food producers are well placed to lead New Zealand farming into the future and has positioned GVE to be able to provide its clients with industry-leading design, products, and service. He encourages anyone looking to improve their irrigation outcomes to contact GVE for an obligation-free consultation.

You CAN have great broadband living in rural Wairarapa! service remained operational and for a time, was the sole lifeline to the outside.

Does your broadband pass the Netflix test? That’s the key question to ask yourself when considering how good your internet access is.

The technology involves directing data between internet networks and remote locations via repeaters placed on hill tops. Where mains power isn’t available, the repeaters are powered by solar, wind, battery or generators. Landowners help create access to the hill tops and provide power in return for broadband and phone services, far superior to the regular national providers.

For many rural people, the answer is a resounding “NO”, but with WIZwireless, you can get great broadband speeds, no matter how remote you live. WIZwireless is 100 per cent New Zealand owned and a member of WISPA-NZ, one of around 30 operators around the country. Bridget Canning is its Managing Director and is based in Masterton.

There are internet plans to suit all needs from rural homes, to farms and businesses – with a variety of internet speed and data options available, including no phone lines and no line charges.

“We deploy leading-edge wireless broadband technology in rural areas. Known as wireless ISPs, WISPs, or regional Telcos they provide high quality broadband in hard-to-reach places which national operators shy away from because of the low population density and challenging topography. We effectively work with a customer, identify where they live; where the hill tops are; examine potential coverage and then build a regional tower to create tower accessible broadband.” WISPA-NZ entity has more than 60,000 customers NZ wide. WISPs are resilient too, having proved their worth in the Kaikoura earthquake aftermath when the

Bridget Canning’s team can find the most flexible solution for any situation. She is supported by Ben Seddon and Shaun Minifie and Hayden Macdonald as an installer, who build various radio sites and do the customer installs for internet and provide technical backup. Cheers Auto & Tyres Ltd

Keri Johnston – Head Judge

Every mechanical service Four NZ farmers lead the way in sustainable irrigation under the Cheers Auto & Tyres sign Four New Zealand farmers have been selected as finalists of the inaugural Zimmatic™ Sustainable Irrigation Awards.

all four finalists demonstrated a highlevel of achievement across all four categories, which set them apart from the others.

The Awards aim to celebrate excellence in sustainable irrigation and encourage Australian and New Zealand farmers to share ideas for achieving sustainable freshwater management.

“Our finalists all have farm businesses with values and philosophies based on environmental stewardship, care of the land, water and community, and being caretakers for the next generation.

The competition is run by agricultural irrigation systems leader, Zimmatic, with support from New Zealand Awards partners IrrigationNZ, Farmers Weekly, Vantage NZ and Irricon. It recognises farmers leading the way in responsible irrigation, innovative water management and environmental stewardship.

“These finalists also demonstrated a level of considered decision-making in relation to irrigation system design. They are all using technology to their advantage, while taking steps to maximise efficiency and minimise environmental impacts.

Four finalists from each country have been selected from a pool of quality entries. The New Zealand finalists are: Ben and Anna Gillespie (Central Otago); Brock & Gemma Hamilton (North Otago); Ted Rollinson (Mid-Canterbury); Nick Webster (North Otago). Each entrant was judged on the following categories: sustainable irrigation management; irrigationdriven improvements, which may include cost reductions, environmental outcomes, yield improvements and/ or improved efficiencies; waterway protection; stewardship/community. Irrigation NZ chair and Irricon Resource Solutions principal, Keri Johnston, is head judge for the Awards. She says

“It was obvious these farmers have a deep understanding of their properties and their unique challenges. They have used clever thinking and an innovative approach to tackle these challenges, rather than just trying to tick the box. “From supporting their peers to helping with education in schools, we were also impressed by the outstanding community leadership demonstrated by some of our finalists. “While we could only choose four New Zealand finalists, all our entrants should be commended for their commitment to responsible water management both on and off the farm.” On-farm judging will take place in the Spring before the supreme winner is announced.

2020 23 Qlabs

Tumu ITM Masterton

Raymond Burr and Donna Campbell

Healthy soil, healthy profits Healthy soils lead to healthy plants, which lead to healthy animals, which leads to healthy cashflow for farmers.

“Farmers have been blown away with the results and the improvement they’ve seen in their animals.”

This is the philosophy of Qlabs– one of the leading names in New Zealand agricultural science. Owned and operated by former farmers, Raymond Burr and Donna Campbell, the Hawke’s Bay company works with clients throughout the primary sector - helping maximise profits by way of its scientifically proven fertiliser programmes.

Under the Fallain Programme, Qlabs run a variety of tests, at their Waipawa Laboratory.

Raymond says Qlabs works on the premise that the key to successful agriculture lies in ecological efficiency – what’s going on in farmers’ soils, and what’s in their animal feed and reducing their environmental footprint. Using its Fallain Programme (“fallain” meaning “healthy” in Scottish Gaelic), Qlabs can test soil and plant nutrients, then design customised fertiliser programmes and, where required,a feed balancing ration all tailored to the individual farm. “We focus on working with farmers to demystify agricultural science – so they can understand what’s going in their pastures,” Raymond says. “Soil is the foundation of farming – if you’ve got good nutrients in the soil, you’ve got healthy grass, and healthy animals which produce good meat, dairy and wool.

From there, Qlabs can put together fertiliser programmes (assembled by Maungaraki Lime in Masterton) specifically designed to improve the carbon and nitrogen cycle of the individual soil type, and produce plants with higher nutrient density. Qlabs also run a patented testing system for Ruminant Nitrogen Utilisation Efficiency, which can gauge how well livestock are performing, based on their urinary nitrogen outputs. Qlabs also assist businesses looking to grow a wide variety of crops, as they have soil fertility templates for over 160 plants species – a boon for clients such as olive groves, cut flower gardeners, berry growers and viticulturists. The company runs regular trials for new farming innovations – including a trial of a drought-resistant pasture carried out recently in Dannevirke. The pasture in question had a crop canopy (for calf grazing) grown with a multi species, permanent pasture sward underneath, this helped the soil retain moisture – allowing the pasture to boom through the recent summer drought.

This includes No 1 fencing posts which are often in short supply in Wairarapa. This isn’t a problem for Tumu ITM as it has its own source of supply.

Every site is different, and every building has a different purpose. That’s why Tumu ITM’s sheds have flexible options, so they can be customised to your purpose.

Tim is happy to come and quote on site, so you order exactly what you need - saving potentially thousands of dollars in unneeded posts, or running out of posts before you have got the job finished.

Tim will visit you for an on-site consultation to discuss what can be achieved within your budget.

He will schedule a delivery within a couple of days of the quote being accepted.

Once you have made your choice, he will take all the specification details and perform an extensive range of calculations that provides you with a complete shed design. He can assist with the council consent application, then supply and deliver the materials in stages until the shed is completed.

Sellar & Sellar has been a trusted financial partner to the rural community since 1884, through wars, depressions and buoyant times. To this day around 80 per cent of its clients are rural. Personal service has played a large part in the longevity of the Masterton-based business, with long-lasting ties built and retained over many years, says its Business Manager Trudy Hullena. “People don’t realise the level of service the staff here give our clients. For instance, they didn’t want to abandon them during the Covid-19 lockdown.” Sellar & Sellar is a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, with five of its 12 staff members on the professional body. Which means they have the qualifications and ethics to support their work. The firm has three principals – Dominic Stewart, Graeme Bayliss and Clare Jacobson. Each is passionate about Wairarapa and its people. This passion is evidenced in their dynamic approach to their profession. Dominic’s expertise is in farming,

forestry, carbon trading and viticulture. Mentoring new practitioners adds a string to his bow, as does the pride he feels for the support Sellar & Sellar offers the community via audits and reviews of local charitable and not-for-profit organisations. Graeme joined Sellar & Sellar after two decades in the meat industry as both a financial and management accountant. He has immeasurable experience in guiding clients through the changes life throws at them whether these be around succession planning, protecting assets, forming Trusts or supporting a group through change management processes. Clare is Sellar & Sellar’s newest Partner. Adding a further dimension of knowledge to the firm, she brings values to the leadership team that includes a commitment to service, determination to see new businesses prosper and a willingness to go the extra mile. Trudy believes a high level of personal service is even more necessary during the post-lockdown period. “It is a time of uncertainty for businesses and they need confidence in the decisions they make. “The vast range of skills and knowledge available at Sellar & Sellar absolutely allows our clients that certainty.”

Friendly and experienced Export Bull Centre an opportunity to sell semen rural freight cartage to the world Farmers wanting to tap into the market for semen genetics in New Zealand and overseas now have the opportunity with ViaBull. ViaBull has just built the first MPIapproved Export Bull Centre to be constructed in New Zealand for more than 20 years, for fertility testing and semen collection. Located on the outskirts of Hamilton, the purpose-built isolation farm is under lock and key from the public and animal disease, with huge yards, an onsite laboratory and its own vet. Semen extracted at the centre will be classified as “licensed” which means it is allowed to be sold domestically and overseas. This means farmers will be able to make a lot more money from their best bulls, says Darren Williams who founded ViaBull with Nigel Juby. “There is a big demand for good genetics in beef and dairy, and we do ovine and caprine as well. This will shake up the whole industry once it takes off. The opportunities are pretty huge.”

to have semen collected from their bulls on farm which is classified as “unlicensed.” While this is good for farmers improving the genetics of their own herd, they miss out on the additional income that is possible when the semen is licensed, Darren points out. Darren and Nigel have known each other for many years, their paths crossing through working in the same field.

Rural freight cartage is the speciality of Williams Trucking, a family owned business operated by Masterton couple Robert and Stacey Williams. Williams Trucking has a strong local flavour, especially as it incorporates Tinui Freight, which Robert and Stacey purchased two years ago. Williams trucking now have a large and small truck able to cater for all your freight tasks of any size within Wairarapa and beyond. This includes gravel, stock feed, fencing supplies, timber, tractors and farm machinery, bark, fertiliser and other bulk products.

Nigel established OvaAchievers 12 years ago for embryo transfers and flushing. For the past 15 years Darren has been collecting semen for some of New Zealand’s pre-eminent companies.

Robert and Stacey also cater to the urban and lifestyle markets who may require section clearing, a driveway resurfaced or constructed from scratch or general freight delivered.

As well as partnering at the centre, they have combined their skills to help farmers achieve the best genetics on their own farms.

They now have a skid steer (bobcat) loader which is the ideal machine for cleaning out farmers stockyards and wool sheds, dairy raceways, grading driveways or building horse arenas.

A quality, hassle-free building experience Whether it’s a restored farming homestead, a new kitchen, or an architecturally designed new home, Hepburn Builders has the expertise and craftsmanship to make your grand designs a reality. With Masterton couple Willie and Emma Hepburn at the helm, Hepburn Builders has (along with some stunning structures) built a reputation for dedicated service, enduring relationships, and a discerning eye for design. Willie has been working in the construction industry since leaving school – originally training in architectural drafting, before deciding building was his real passion. He did a building apprenticeship with DR Borman Ltd and worked in the company after becoming qualified, before doing a stint working for a wellknown movie director as a set builder – coming up with ambitious, visually creative, eye-catching concepts. In 2007, he and Emma founded Hepburn Builders - which has grown from a one-man band to a team of five talented carpenters. As well as building with the team when he can, Willie focuses on the project management of each build – whether it’s a crumbling cottage restored to “good as new” or a palatial dream

home, built from the foundations up. Having a dedicated project manager means decisions can be made quickly, helping the building process run smoothly. “Willie enjoys helping people bring their visions to life – he has an amazing eye for detail, and is a real perfectionist. He can help clients figure out all the details they’ve been stuck on,” Emma says. “He and the builders love seeing a big project through, right from the first drawings.” One such project was a sprawling lifestyle block on Te Kopi Road in Gladstone, which won Hepburn Builders a Silver Award for excellence in building at the 2019 House of the Year competition. However, they are particularly passionate about renovations – a great deal of which they carry out on local farms. Willie is a registered Master Builder and Licensed Building Practitioner. That means you can rest assured we stand by our work, ensure a stressfree experience, and deliver a quality product.

Whether it’s bringing an old home back to life, or an architecturally designed new home, Hepburn Builders relish the unique challenges represented.

Diamond Dealer Award The Covid-19 lockdown couldn’t stop Brent, Tracey, and the staff at Wairarapa Mitsubishi achieving the highest honour Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand can bestow on a dealership. In late May, instead of holding its annual awards evening in person, Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand livestreamed the event to its 56 dealers. Wairarapa Mitsubishi’s 17 staff and families crowded into the showroom in Queen Street, Masterton, to hear they had been named one of eight 2020 Diamond Dealers in New Zealand. The Diamond Dealer Award recognises outstanding performance in every aspect of a businesses – sales, customer satisfaction, finance, service, parts sales, and vehicle presentation. This is not the first time Wairarapa Mitsubishi has featured in the national awards, Brent winning the Managing Director Of The Year Award in 2017. But winning the Diamond Dealer Award is special because it recognises the effort and commitment of everyone involved with the business, Brent says. “It is the highest achievement available as a Mitsubishi dealer. No matter what role each staff member has, they all

played a part in winning the award. We are one family and couldn’t have achieved the award without being a team.” In particular, Brent thanks his wife Tracey. “We could not have won the award without her support at home, and her contribution to the business.” Wairarapa Mitsubishi has been on an upward curve ever since Brent and Tracey took over the business in 2015 achieving better results every year. Brent attributes part of their success to the Triton, which has been the top selling ute in Wairarapa for the past two years. “The Triton is one of the best utes in the market and is one of the top three brands sold in New Zealand in recent years.” Brent says the lockdown did impact the business, “but since Level 3 we have not stopped.
