The couple use four Centre pivot irrigators with variable rate irrigation (VRI) technology to help them isolate irrigation blocks based on their farm’s soil types, and the seasonal crops in the ground, ensuring the most sustainable use of water. “Zimmatic’s Precision VRI system has allowed us to put water and nutrients exactly where the plants need it, saving time, cost, and having a positive environmental impact,” says TheSimon.White’s harvest most of their water throughout the winter months from excess flood water and store it in four large irrigation dams for summer application. They then stagger-plant crops so the demand for irrigation is spread across a five-month planting programme. They also match crops to the soil types on their farm. “We’ve been looking at how isolating different zones impacts how much water we’re using and cutting out laneways in areas that don’t need to be irrigated,” says Simon. “The system is helping us use the resource as sustainably as possible.”

Introducing James Hannon Dealer Principal TFM Tractors
Customers of TFM Tractors will continue to see the same familiar faces as well, including Sales Manager Cyril Butler, Service M anager Jamie Hansen, and Parts Manager Craig Amundsen. But there will be changes, James says, and they will all be positive, especially in after-sales. “We are restructuring our after-sales service and parts departments and how they work. “Our retail parts department has outgrown its space, so we are going to move that to a new area and expand TFM Tools into a larger retail space selling a wide range of tools, engineering supplies, and lubricants.
James says that despite the “doom and gloom” around, the industry is doing very well at the moment, and “looks forward to increasing the level of service to customers.”

“We are also going to relocate some sta to the areas where they are specialists in their “Theseeld. changes will allow us to increase the product range, stock we have on-hand, and increase our focus on each division.” James’ background means he is the perfect person to oversee these changes. He joined Tulloch Farm Machines/TFM Tractors straight out of college, starting in Parts, followed by Service, and then Sales over ten years. In 2013 he went to work for a well-known Masterton car dealership in Parts, Sales, and then becoming Branch Manager before returning to Sales at TFM Tractors two years
To keep up with the changes, TFM Tractors has been putting its sta through a lot of online training during the covid pandemic.
Theago.tractor and machinery industry is changing rapidly, James says. “There’s been a lot of changes over the last ten years in the industry. The technology that has come through is phenomenal.”

In fact, he’s been a part of the Tulloch Farm Machines/TFM Tractors family twice since he left school, and both his father David and grandfather Neale worked for the Solway business. But James’ elevation to the new position does carry some signi cance. On the rst of May this year, Tulloch Farm Machines and TFM Tractors 25 sta were split into two divisions, with John Tulloch remaining as Managing Director of Tulloch Farm Machines, and James becoming Dealer Principal of TFM Tractors. Tulloch Farm Machines will continue to be one of New Zealand’s leading distributors of farm machinery, representing world leading brands such as Krone. TFM Tractors will continue providing Wairarapa farmers, lifestylers and contractors with sales, service and parts support for Massey Ferguson, Fendt and Iseki tractors, Krone, and other leading machinery brands.

Pole sheds can be open or enclosed lean-tos, barns, or gables. With so many options, Mike says to give him a call or email, or visit, www.itm.co.nz
In days gone by most pole sheds were two or three bays long with three corrugated iron sides and a slanted roof to house bobby calves, tractors, or hay baleage. Today’s pole sheds are needing to store more than just hay bales and are subsequently designed and custom built to suit a variety of individual customer needs. At Crighton ITM Greytown, they’ve been building pole sheds across Wairarapa for Salesyears.Rep, Mike Turley has been with ITM for 14 years and been involved in building and managing pole shed builds for the last 10. There’s not a lot he doesn’t know, hasn’t seen, or can’t help with. “At Crighton ITM Greytown, we work out what customers want to put in their shed and the things they’ll use it for, and then work backwards from that to spec out what it will cost them,” says Mike. “We fill out all the details in an engineering design software programme called MiTek and this gives us a set of plans, specifications, and the quantities of building materials required for the build.

It’s great because we can then price off that so customers know exactly what their build will cost Customersthem.can also make adjustments to their plans and then see how those will add or subtract from the cost”. Mike says his team has been doing pole sheds for years and are well versed in assisting customers. “We’re here to help throughout, giving advice as well as materials for their build. We can even help with building it, if that’s ITMrequired.”Greytown mill their own materials, so supply is not an issue. They’re also competitive on price and extremely customer focused. “We communicate with clients throughout and reassure them everything is on time and that they’ll be satisfied.”
Typical pole sheds found on farms have evolved over the years and can now be designed and custom built to suit a range of different customer needs. They can vary in shape and size and there is no longer a ‘standard’ looking pole shed either.

If you ask yourself where you and your farming business will be in ten years’ time, what would the answer be? Wait a minute, did you stop to consider?
If you scratched your head on a few of the above questions, it suggests that it might be time to take control by ensuring that what you want to have happen in the future, Thehappens.bestway to do that is to firstly, have a discussion with your family or legacy to ensure you’re on the same page. Then, engage a professional and who better than Julie Millar, a partner at Gibson Sheat Lawyers. Having grown up in Wairarapa and worked under two seasoned professionals in Brett Gould and Bruce Logan for years, Julie is the right person for your rural job. Specifically on farm succession planning, Julie recommends “for a fair and transparent process, I recommend that families start their discussions as early as possible. Be open, communicative, inclusive of all parties involved, document discussions and don’t underestimate the need for legal advice”. Sometimes, there are competing interests and to ensure the fair outcome for all you need a good lawyer for these important decisions. “It can be easy to underestimate the emotions that succession planning can bring up so it’s important for family members to be conscious and considerate of the landowner’s wishes” Julie says. “I’m experienced and I can simplify everything including all the processes and legal language.”
Julie understands the array of choices and questions that rural people will have about their businesses and assets, especially when it comes to succession planning decisions. Julie’s other areas of expertise include structuring and funding your business, commercial property, rural work and advice around legally structuring personal relationships. To arrange a discussion, contact Julie on julie.millar@gibsonsheat.com or call 06 370 6480.
Even if you think you know the answer, one can never predict what life throws at you, so, whether you’re a young or seasoned farmer, having a well-structured succession plan which is documented and communicated is vital. Especially in today’s climate. As a landowner you might have other questions, such as, is subdividing an option you should or could consider, do you need to buy, sell, or lease new land and properties to grow, and do you have family trusts set up to protect the assets you’ve worked so hard for?

Next generation Outlander hybrid ready to test drive
Under these new rules, the Outlander still achieved the top five-star rating. Brent believes the new model also represents a massive leap forward in the aesthetics of the “It’sOutlander.acompletely different design – more bold and dynamic.”
Where will you and your farming business be in ten years’ time?
“It’s bigger, more powerful, and more Iteconomic.”isalsovery safe. Last year the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP SAFETY) which is Australasia’s independent vehicle safety authority, introduced much more stringent safety requirements.

But the only way to really appreciate the new Outlander hybrid is to take the car for a test drive, Brent says. “It needs to be driven to be appreciated.”
Introduced in 2006, The Outlander is New Zealand’s favourite seven-seat SUV. The 2022 model, which is available to test drive at Wairarapa Mitsubishi in Queen Street, Masterton, represents the next generation of the car, says Dealer Principal Brent Cooper. “It’s a whole new model – a clean sheet with almost nothing the same.” The timing of its introduction could not be better, he says, as brand new buyers will enjoy a government rebate of $5,750 on the hybrid, which is around 10 per cent of the price of the entry level version which is $60,990. There are plenty of other reasons the Outlander hybrid will appeal to Wairarapa residents, Brent believes. “The 4WD is capable of many different tasks from taking all the family on holiday to handling rough ground and rural roads.

If you have driven along the southern end of Ngaumutawa Road lately, you may have noticed the new Wairarapa Hunting & Fishing store opposite Solway Primary School. Thanks to strong local support, the business outgrew its previous premises in Queen Street. Owners Greg McKinney and Aaron Middleton needed something larger and purpose-built to suit the growing needs of their customers and to provide them with an enhanced shopping experience. The new location is easier to access, especially when travelling along the south end of Masterton. Aaron points out there is lots of off-street parking with plenty of room for trailers, boats, and tractors! The larger store has allowed Aaron and Greg to carry more products and expose customers to more brands like Cat, Swanndri, Salty Crew, and Desolve. “The new shop is a game-changer! It gives us a lot more room to display our wares and greatly enhances the shopping experience for our customers,” says Aaron. Putting up your boots – why planning a successful farm exit strategy is so important
The average age of New Zealand farm owners is now close to 60. While retirement may be the primary focus for many in their exit planning, it could also be due to unexpected circumstances or opportunities. Nevertheless, succession and exit planning should be a topic of discussion at every annual farm review. Irrespective of what the future may hold, having a well-defined exit plan will allow you to work towards a strong retirement base. There are numerous reasons why you may decide to step back from the industry. A succession/exit strategy may mean transitioning your farming enterprise to someone in the family, a staff member, or a business Alternatively, partner.you could be selling your farm to generate a retirement income or working with a farm manager/lessee to enable you to step back from the day-to-day operation. Exiting a farm may take many years to ensure a seamless result and the right successor. A sound plan enables you to manage any ‘what if’ scenarios and to reprioritise as the farming landscape changes. In practical terms, those retiring will likely want options to replace their farm income and provide important protection from inflation over their lifetime. It is important to build up some knowledge and understanding of options available to ensure you can make fully informed decisions throughout the exit process. With the increasing complexities of running an agri-business, it is critical that you include the right trusted advisers (such as accountants, lawyers and / or financial advisers) to work together and assist with your planning. An investment plan essential in present climate Bryan draws on more than 30 years’ experience in financial services to advise a variety of clients at Jarden on how to protect and grow their wealth in a dynamic market. He notes that volatile periods in markets, like those we are currently experiencing, can often spark a ‘fight of flight’ instinct among investors - or investors might avoid risk Butaltogether.bothscenarios could potentially harm the likelihood of achieving long-term investment goals. “In conversations with clients in times like these, we often highlight the importance of an investment plan to guide decision “Amaking.keypart of this plan is the length of time an investor is looking to hold their investments, what’s known as the ‘time “Thishorizon’.isimportant because the approach you take when investing for the long-term may differ to that over a shorter period. “While situations like these can understandably be emotional, making decisions in reaction to current events can carry a greater risk of not meeting your aims, and create further stress. “We work with investors to clarify their unique risk tolerance, alongside their investment goals and needs – and this can help guide decisions to ensure they are aligned with an investor’s long-term plan and Bryanaims.” Shepherd is available to discuss succession and investment planning at Jarden’s Masterton office - 186 Chapel Street, in the Bayleys Building. Jarden was founded in 1961 by All Black great Ron Jarden, who at just 26 had a vision to create New Zealand’s leading independent investment firm. New Zealand has many regional timber success stories already with its export ports, good rail links for timber cartage and sawmills contributing to our local economies and the housing boom. Biofuels are poised to provide a renewable energy source for many sectors and will reinvigorate local markets for wood residues making many crops of pine that were previously thought not fit for harvest; suddenly profitable. The Industry Transformation Plan for the forestry sector by MPI is providing some clarity and direction for this emerging future of fibre. As farmers face looming on-farm emissions payments, exotic forestry is a solution that ALL APPLE BINS IN NZ ARE MADE WITH NZ PINE. will provide them with an offset and income that can diversify their farm profits. There will always be a need for the essential crop that is pine to support all the primary sectors with ability to export their products. More export products will mean more pine to wrap it in. So let’s keep the cycle going.
Like farming, forestry is a wealth creator. It produces an essential product. In our case, pine is the raw material needed for the massive nation-wide programme of new house building, and the biofuels needed for sectors like dairy, as it transitions away from its reliance on coal for drying milk powder. Technicians around the world are working on ways which wood derivatives can replace coal and oil-based plastics. New Zealand is well placed to use this technology with our large dairy processing base that is highly reliant on coal. Fonterra has modified several of its factories by replacing coal burners with wood pellet burning furnaces. Our sawmills already provide a perfect example of carbon neutrality. They dry all their timber with furnaces fuelled by their own waste. The dairy and tree crop sectors have much to be gained from a shared vision of a carbon neutral future. By 2050, all primary sector processing is expected to be carbon-neutral. Pine will help them get there. Paper, cardboard and biofuel products are indispensable in our world of primary exports. Pine pallets are essential in our primary sectors for stacking everything from sacks of milk power and frozen goods, to boxes for wine, bins for apples and crates for onions and kiwifruit. The biggest sawmill in Canterbury produces 1,000 pallets a day for stacking goods. It’s taking orders from all over New Zealand and they are running at full Pinecapacity.iseverywhere helping all our export products hit the markets overseas.

LOOKING FOR THE NEW GOLD ... WATER.
Six years ago Mel opened an office in East Street, Greytown which now has five local staff out of the 40 staff who work for the business. Griffiths Drilling is becoming increasingly busy in Wairarapa, drilling bores for anyone needing a consistent water supply, including farmers, subdivisions, commercial businesses, councils and rural residents. Other services include servicing, down hole camera inspections, pump installation and water sampling. Griffiths Drilling has a comprehensive knowledge of Wairarapa’s ground aquifers, geological history, topography, recharge rates, and water Havinguse.the drilling equipment located in Greytown rather than Wellington saves money for clients, Mel notes. The business has a good relationship with Greater Wellington who provide the consent for bores.
Griffiths Drilling
“We work with them to make sure the client gets resource consent.” A preliminary pump test will determine if the required quantity of water is available from the bore. After developing the well, another pump test is carried out to determine the yield from the bore. The company ensures the water is clean and the source water not contaminated by the bore. Griffiths Drilling can inspect existing bores using its down hole camera, give them a clean, and redesign them if necessary.

The name Langlands is synonymous with Butmotorbikes.thepast few years has seen the Wairarapa business with shops in Masterton and Greytown focus on an increasingly wide range of products for rural work and living. “The business has changed a lot,” says manager Amber Green eld. “We don’t just sell motorcycles anymore. We’ve always sold some power equipment but not such a large range. It’s been a natural progression with lots of new lines of power equipment and now also e-bikes. “You don’t have to order online or buy outof-town. We have a huge range of quality products in stock that we stand behind with back up service and warrantees.”
Founded by Grant Langlands in 1992, the Chapel Street shop continues to specialise in all models of new Honda motorcycles, as well as selling an excellent range of second-hand motorcycles of all makes and models. Langlands is well-known for its hardy range of farm bikes, but also sells road, moto-cross, trial and kids bikes, as well as scooters. The Greytown shop is the South Wairarapa agent for Husqvarna’s huge range of power tools for the professional and home-owner, including chainsaws, lawn mowers, ride-on mowers, line trimmers, leaf blowers and hedge trimmers. Both shops sell Husqvarna e-bikes, with one for every purpose including, mountain biking, o road touring, around town petrol savers, and on or o road trekking. Langlands has a wide range of Honda power equipment including generators, brush cutters and water pumps.
