Celebrating the triumphs & experiences of education in Wairarapa

A year of educational progress and hope Welcome to The Year That Was, an annual Wairarapa Times-Age publication that celebrates the efforts and successes of our education providers: from pre-schools to tertiary institutions, and everything in between. Our local schools and other educational providers play a significant role in

fostering the talents, interests, and characters of our rangatahi (young people). Schools, pre-schools, and tertiary institutions work tirelessly to nurture rangatahi, helping them to find their feet for the next stage in their lives. Education is well-known to be a prerequisite for success.

It is also critical for helping our children recognise how worthy they are as individuals, no matter their talents, passions, and hopes. A Wairarapa that is packed with welleducated people is a region that can progress and thrive: economically, socially, and environmentally.

A big thank you to Mitre 10 MEGA Masterton for sponsoring The Year That Was and congratulations to Wairarapa’s education providers – you can be proud of all your efforts and successes. Happy reading of The Year That Was.

CARTERTON LITTLES 37

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Littlies celebrated our ten year anniversary this year and continues to thrive within the currently challenging early childhood sector. We are a sister centre to Carterton Preschool who also celebrated their 15 year anniversary. We pride ourselves on delivering a quality early childhood care and education service with quality ratios and incredible staff who ensure the time tamaiki spend away from home is happy and fun. Each day brings many moments of joy and laughter as the younger members of our community teach us a thing or two while reminding us to slow down and see the world through a child’s eyes. Littlies currently have a full roll with 25 tamariki each day and have a year long waiting list with spaces becoming available in late 2024, please enrol now.

At Littlies the aroha flows freely as we nurture “our” tamariki alongside their whānau. We design our curriculum to follow their interests and strengths while working to meet the aspirations their whānau hold for them. This provides us with diverse learning journeys as tamariki strengthen key learning dispositions and explore the world around them. Freedom of movement philosophy ensures tamariki have the freedom to move in their own time while we encourage them as they work towards their self-set goals like catching a ball. We delight as much as our whānau when our infants take their first step. Upon enrolment, each tamaiti is cared for by a primary caregiver who will support them and their whānau as they settle in and develop their sense of belonging. This is done by ensuring their care moments happen with the same kaiako each time and a respectful and trusting relationship is built with both the tamaiti and their whānau.

The centre has spaces where tamariki can enjoy music and movement, storytelling, dramatic play, and creating masterpieces with our wide range of resources. Spaces are provided for calm and quiet moments as needed. We have a beautiful natural outdoor environment including a popular sandpit, a hill for running or riding down at speed, and opportunities to clamber and climb. A beautiful fale provides a lovely space to play or enjoy a book. A natural corner of ngahere (forest) inspired by our regular trips to Fensham Reserve is a favourite space to explore and search for Tane’s smallest bugs, listen for manū and cook in the mud kitchen. The children love to watch the manū feast at our bird feeder and take special care of our worm farm. It’s almost time to replant our vegetable gardens now summer is on its way, the kai harvested is used in our cooking or as a special treat for the neighbouring chickens. At Littlies every day is filled with treasured moments as we care for our youngest members of Carterton.

CARTERTON PRESCHOOL

MANAGER’S MESSAGE I’m delighted to say it’s been 15 years this month since Lynette Hunter and I established Carterton Preschool. What an amazing journey it has been, we have loved every minute of being part of this amazing community and appreciate the ongoing support provided to us over the years. During these 15 years I have been very privileged to work alongside the most amazing, passionate teachers who believed in our vision and our purpose to always provide the best programmes and early childhood experiences for children and families in Carterton. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the teachers and staff who have gone above and beyond to support and contribute to the success of achieving our vision for Preschool.

Here at Carterton Preschool there are many things we hold dear to our way of operating as a quality childcare centre, running the preschool as a team, having a higher teacher to child ration than Ministry requirements, providing an inside and outside environment that feels like a home, employing passionate teachers that make families feel genuinely welcome and valued, continually striving to provide a programme that builds children’s confidence and self-esteem. We value being part of our community, the natural environment and learning how to take care of it, providing a bi-cultural curriculum for all children, and providing a thorough transition procedure from Littlies to Preschool and from Preschool to school. Throughout the year we have had many adventures including, our favourite bike days, walks to Sparks Park and Howard Booth Park, and our weekly visits to the Mangatarere Stream, and our annual Matariki night, new developments in our playground like our bridge that has a Taniwha living under it. We were also very lucky to have another fantastic trip to the McFadzean’s farm, and even a visit from Zappo the magician. The Tamariki have contributed locally

by supporting Red Heart Day, Onesie Day, and Daffodil day. As part of our philosophy at Carterton Preschool we teach tamariki an awareness of the importance of community. An important aspect of this is showing them ways that we can contribute to our community and wider society. We enjoyed a healthy picnic morning tea at Howard Booth Park followed by lots of fun sports activities to exercise our hearts. This year we combined our fundraising for Daffodil day and Onesie Day. Kaiako and tamariki collected sponsorship for a walkathon to raise money to split between these charities. Each morning for a week we all enjoyed a walk around the walking track at Howard Booth Park, followed by a well-deserved play in the playground. We were absolutely delighted when our tamariki raised over $600, thanks to the support from our amazing parents and whānau. We are busier than ever celebrating birthdays, graduations, and welcoming new families into our Preschool whānau. There are so many exciting projects and events coming up, with the next being our float for the Carterton Christmas parade. See you there! The door is always open, come on in, have a look around and meet the team!

CARTERTON PLAYCENTRE

As we reflect on the past year, it’s clear that Playcentre is a place where children learn, play, and build connections with their families and community. The adventures and experiences shared here help create a solid foundation for the growth of confident, creative, and compassionate individuals, all while fostering a strong sense of community and togetherness.

SESSION FACILITATOR ’S MESSAGE I am the Session Facilitator at Carterton Playcentre. I have been with Playcentre for the past year and a half and have loved it so far. As a qualified Early Childhood Teacher, I was employed to support parents in their role as Kaiako. I support and facilitate a learning-rich environment that is play-based and child-led. Together we create a space where children can learn and explore alongside their parents and whānau. Playcentre is a place where we all grow and learn together. We play, foster relationships and explore while getting a little messy! We laugh learn and respect, care for each other. I am proud to be a part of the Carterton Playcentre community and encourage anyone in the area to come and visit us.

We would like to share a few of the many highlights of 2023 at Carterton Playcentre. Thank you CDC for the sandpit renovation. Children are drawn to the tactile sensation of sand, which encourages sensory play, imagination, and social interaction. Matariki, the Māori New Year, was celebrated with great enthusiasm. We learnt about this important cultural event through art, storytelling, and music, and celebrated with our whānau with some shared kai. The celebrations fostered an appreciation for Māori culture and a sense of connection to Aotearoa’s rich heritage. The kitchen at Playcentre has been a hub of creativity and hands-on learning as children explored their culinary talents. Preparing simple dishes and baking stimulated their sensory

development and also encourages healthy eating habits and a sense of independence. Messy Play is a favourite at Playcentre. Children experiment with all sorts of messy materials and allow their creativity to run wild. It has been a joy to witness the laughter, smiles and sense of wonder from messy play. Our sessions often expand beyond the perimeter of our Centre, and this year we were fortunate to visit a local farm and the Carterton Fire Station. The farm visit was a highly anticipated event, and the Carterton Firefighters also hosted an educational and exciting session. The chance to operate the fire hose brought a lot of joy to all. So, here’s to the memories we’ve created and the ones we’ll make. We look forward to seeing all families, both familiar faces and newcomers next year, ready to embark on another exciting chapter of exploration and discovery together.

Visit to the Carterton Fire Station.

“learning together to achieve success”

This year, our kura has been continuing 2022’s momentum of The Great Outdoors. Our Enviroschool group has formed a Tracking and Trapping team, had Te Kura o Papatuanuku composting workshops and worked on the school gardens. We have upgraded the very popular sandpit and tyre swings. We continue to utilise our skateboarding resources and have made everyday ‘wheels day’ by encouraging tamariki

cats, poultry and more. We love to see this tradition continuing and having our kura open to the local ECE centres and school whānau to enjoy the various pets and check out the artistry talent of our students in the art work displays. We have had a range of exciting lunch options available for our kura too. Sushi Gallery Tuesdays, Cafe Olé Wednesdays and Pita Pit Thursdays are popular for something different for school lunches. We are excited to have had the

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Another incredible year at the school of choice! We have seen growth across the board with enrolments, diverse staffing and curriculum developments. We have welcomed Jo Hunter as our Deputy Principal and are already seeing positive changes coming through with the development of a student council. Our attendance is above the national average and our Learning Data continues to improve. Our dedicated PTA continues to engage the local community and assist with fundraising events including the famous Carterton School Gala. We encourage outdoor education and utilise the excellent amenities on offer. This year we recognised the need for a school-led After School Care and Holiday Programme to support our working families.

Team Kawakawa Forest School visit.

Our ākomanga (classroom) expanded in 2023 with more tamariki and whānau choosing our learning style, structure and culturally responsive environment. We began 2023 by re-connecting with our Manawhenua at Hurunui-o-Rangi marae; it was long overdue after Covid restrictions. Our tuakana have shared their Reo, Kapa Haka and Tikanga knowledge in our mainstream junior school every Friday by tutoring groups of students. We showcased our knowledge and skills at the Wairarapa Primary Schools Kapa Haka Festival in Term 3. We have participated in a Timestableathon during Maths week and utilised it as a fundraiser for our tuakana (Tau 5-8) Kapiti Coast adventure. Our teina (Tau 0-4) have utilised local attractions such as Cobblestones and Go-Zone for their excursions. TEAM KAWAKAWA 2023 (YEARS 0-3) Team Kawakawa has grown significantly in 2023. We now have five classes from Year 0 to Year 3. We have continued a strong focus on Inquiry play and using the Better Start Literacy Approach. Our tamariki have enjoyed many activities including:

Team Kahikatea Ski Camp.

The tamariki are busy planning another overnight camp involving camping in tents and sharing kai with whānau. Our passionate and enthusiastic teachers continue to encourage the tamariki to explore the environment around them and be part of all aspects of school life. We utilise the tuakanateina relationships with senior classes and keep connections with local ECEs to create positive transition between the learning environments.

WHAT’S TO COME FOR 2024

Team Kahikatea’s goal of creating lifelong, resilient learners who are driven to succeed and provide a wide range of opportunities for growth has definitely been met this year.

Team Kahikatea will focus on Year 7 and 8 students only. This means these students will have access to an ‘intermediate’ type setting with smaller classes and specialist teachers, options and activities, while still having the leadership opportunities, friendships and the support of primary school. Our kura aims to give plenty of space to grow as young people while preparing them for their future learning journey.

Activities such as:     

Jump Jam Buddy classes Livewire Radio Show Lunchtime sports In-school leadership opportunities

And professional development through TEAM KŌWHAI (YEARS 4-5) In 2023, the ‘Kōwhai Model’ for teaching and learning across Years 4 and 5 was formed. Our kaiako already knew the students as unique individuals and were able to use a variety of groupings across the team. This provided the students with the best learning opportunities for their personal learning journey. Our highlights this year have been:  delving into Aotearoa’s history  incorporating the Arts with music, visual and movement  utilising the outdoor environment for sport and physical activities  inter-school Kapa Haka exchange  A fantastic action-packed camp at Kaitoke

Tech Masterclasses Science days Sporting competitions and workshops, have all been on offer in the senior syndicate. We recognise wellbeing as a priority. We have been able to offer REAP sessions - where self reflection and awareness is encouraged. Our curriculum is well balanced with:    

Reading, Writing, Maths, Science, Technology, PE, Fitness Skills, Kapa Haka, Languages and Options. A massive highlight of 2023 was the Team Kahikatea Camp to Tukino Skifield. The tamariki enjoyed snowboarding and skiing with many seeing snow fall for the first time on our final day. Where will we go next year?

Our Ākonga Māori is also developing. Whānau are eager to increase the use of Te Reo in teaching and learning for their tamariki. Our exceptional kaiako are collaborating with leadership to enrich the presence of Te Reo and Te Ao Māori opportunities within the Ākonga Māori whānau hubs and throughout our kura. The ultimate goal is to seamlessly weave Te Reo and Te Ao Māori into the core of our educational community.

THE YEAR THAT WAS 2023 SPONSORED BY

CHANEL COLLEGE

There has been much to celebrate at Chanel College this year as we looked forward to normal again. We have experienced much success both in and outside of the classroom.

Chanel College - Te Kāreti o Kanihera

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE It is my absolute pleasure and privilege to serve the Chanel College community as Tumuaki (Principal) and ensure we fullfill our mission of nurturing the growth and development of all rangatahi (young people) to become lifelong learners able to go into the world as disciples of Christ. As the only Catholic secondary school in Wairarapa, we are an integral part of our parish community. Proud of our Catholic faith and traditions, we promote and live by a core set of gospel values that are embedded in all we do. Small enough to know each and every student by name yet big enough to ensure opportunities are vast and varied, we are committed to providing an education is engaging, student centered and prepares our ākonga (learners) for the future, no matter which direction it may take them in.

As our schools, community and subsequently, our learners become more diverse we have taken the exciting opportunity to look at how we teach, ensuring we work to understand each ākonga for their God given strengths, talents and identities. Our staff have embraced learning over the course of the year, to better understand the needs of our learners. Learning about trauma informed practices, how to cater the needs of neurodiverse students and ensuring opportunities allow ākonga to see themselves reflected in their learning contexts and spaces, have been a priority as we work toward greater student engagement and realising our school vision of ‘Growing confident, connected, future ready Catholic citizens’ who are able to walk through life as examples of Jesus Christ.

Faith Formation- This year, our annual sacramental programme saw nine students make the commitment to live their lives as Catholic. It was also wonderful to see four staff members do the same, as they undertook to participate in the RCIA programme run by our local parish priest, Father Bruce England. The very mission of our role as a Catholic community is evangelical and so to be able to see our staff and students take that very special step is a blessing to our whole school community. Sport: We have certainly had great success in the sporting field this year, punching above our weight considering our small roll. This year we have over 60% of our students participate in sport at some level, fielding more teams in 2023 then we have in the past decade. Our Yr 7&8 netball teams both made the finals in their competition and our Senior A team won their division. Our Senior Boys basketball team entered into the Manawatu competition this year

Celebrating completion of the Burpee Mile in support of mental health.

A positive home school relationship where your aspirations for your child guide us, ensures that no child is left behind at Chanel College. Our vision is to grow confident, connected, future ready, Catholic citizens. Through their learning and faith experiences at Chanel College, ākonga will walk through the world as disciples of Christ, showing the love, mercy and grace of Jesus to all they encounter.

mental health on youth and organised a fundraiser to support the I Am Hope foundation. Fundraising over $2500 from completing a Burpee Mile. Our younger students loved getting involved alongside some community members.

A Stage: 2023 saw the return of Sheila Winn Shakespeare competition where our students took to the stage to put together a student-led performance that demonstrated passion and excellence.

This year we collaborated with St Patrick’s Primary school to plan and undertake our inaugural Yr 6-8 Rarotonga trip. 23 students with 5 staff, travelled to Rarotonga for seven days where our students spent time connecting with students from St Joseph’s Catholic school, attend mass at St Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral, swam with turtles, and donated supplies to the SPCA. This was a wonderful experience for students to see how other kids their age live in another part of the world.

Dakotah Gare was proud to step in and take the lead on the student directed 5 minute Romeo and Juliet piece and Caitlyn Ward, won the award for Best use of Voice Projection. Our school Cultural group is going from strength to strength and we are loving the growth of the students as performers and the culturally diverse performances that ensure all fell embraced and seen at Chanel College. Service & Community: Our Police Pathways class led the charge in recognising the powerful impact of

of our community, but we know that continuing to do the same thing just because it is the way it has always been done, is not serving our learners well. We must embrace innovation, the reality of a future with Artificial Intelligence and pathways into careers we are not even aware of yet. To do this we must be focussed on learning first and remember that assessment is used to inform learning and provide evidence of learning. Credits are not the end goal just the reward. We utilise Atawhai

teachers which provide each and every student with a key teacher who is able to support them in their life at the school, map out their goals and track that they are undertaking the right learning to get there. Key skills and competencies are critical for developing learners who know how to access information and how to use it. It is time for change in education and at Chanel we are prepared for this to ensure equitable outcomes for each and every learner in our school. 2023 Dux Malisa Clark.

Successful Learners: Our focus on individual success has seen more students supported into meaningful pathways, shifting from credit driven approaches, to actually developing the skills they need to be lifelong learners. It is a shift that requires a re-education Ko to rōpū Kapa Haka ki te Kareti o Kanihera.

THE YEAR THAT WAS 2023 SPONSORED BY

CLOUD KIDS EDUCARE

Each day at Cloud Kids is a celebration of who we all are: tamariki, whānau, kaiako, growing, changing, caring for ourselves and each other, and 2023 has been no different. Our Calm Classroom programme guides our philosophy, which supports the tamariki to gain fundamental life skills such as independence, self regulation and manaakitanga.

MANAGER’S MESSAGE I have the privilege of working alongside a passionate group of kaiako at Cloud Kids. I am inspired each day by their dedication to the tamariki and whānau of the centre and the ECE profession as a whole as we share together the precious early years of our tamariki. A centre upgrade has seen the inside play area painted and new carpet in the foyer so far. We have sourced and raised funds for a makeover in the outdoor area and thanks to fantastic support from whānau, the centre Board and local organisations we have been able to raise over $30,000 towards this which is really exciting. Ki te kotahi te kākaho, ka whati; ki te kāpuia, e kore e whati If a reed stands alone it can be broken; if it is in a group it cannot.

The teaching team focuses on tamariki developing Social & Emotional Competencies, learning to understand and name emotions they are feeling and how to manage their feelings in a positive way. Developing these skills at a young age has a huge, positive impact on the person they will become and is a lifelong skill. We believe for tamariki to develop these competencies they need an environment where they feel they belong, can be themselves, and have supportive people around them that know them well and who support them on that journey. Our belief and the key to it all, is RELATIONSHIPS. Building trusting, respectful, responsive relationships between the tamariki, whānau and kaiako. Feedback from a recent ERO Akarangi/Quality Evaluation review noted that kaiako do that well here.

day  Philosophy is evident in practice To provide the best environment we can, the centre has signed up to a SELO programme between MOE and Ngati Kahungungu ki Wairarapa to support Wairarapa kaiako to strengthen their teaching practices to be reflective of Te Ao Māori identity, language, and culture. “Through visiting cultural sites of significance, sharing Wairarapa pūrākau, kaiako are able to further build their understanding of learners’ contexts, including languages spoken at home, histories, stories and cultural values, to provide culturally responsive teaching”. We believe gaining this knowledge and understanding of local histories is important for all our tamariki whether they whakapapa to these pūrakāu and places of significance, or not. We are excited to be continuing our journey into 2024. Centre hours are 8.45am 2.45pm, Mon - Fri and you are welcome to come visit us.

Celebrating the triumphs & experiences of education in Wairarapa

DALEFIELD SCHOOL

2023 has been another great Dalefield year. We are proud of the fact that we continue to attract new families to the area and that we are part of the wider Carterton community. Our setting still makes me pinch myself, nestled below the foothills of the Tararua Range; and we fully take advantage of it to enhance learning opportunities for our tamariki. The year kicked off with our senior students heading to Riversdale for the beach education programme.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dalefield School continues to be a place where we aim for our tamariki to grow in all facets of their learning. I am fortunate that my deputy, Willy Jephson has been able to step up into the acting principal role following a serious accident I had, whilst on a school camp in December last year. The recovery has been a long process but I take heart that the school is in great spirits and continues to be supported by our wonderful Dalefield whānau. Towards the end of last year, the school grounds and road safety improvements got underway. Whilst the resulting removal of our playground equipment has been a challenge, the ground works are complete and the plans for the reinstatement and enhancement are on track.

A fantastic time was had on what was one of the rare fine days at the start of 2023. This is an energetic, fun and challenging day, engaging in safe activity around water. The first term had large chunks of the playground cordoned off as the safety improvements took shape. The students, staff and community were very patient but a real plus is that we now have two areas of solid-surfaced grounds that have meant that scooters and roller skates have come into their own.

83

The Ruamahanga Restoration Trust have been really helpful as we start the redevelopment of the grounds and importantly, the new plantings to meet the 10% of the school grounds in native ecosystems goal, we aspire to.

15

New rare Wairarapa natives are now in place as well as new shelter trees and shrubs that will shelter the vegetable gardens.

Super fun at the Jumping June fundraiser.

June programme were real highlights of the second term. We had great support from our community, raising funds for the heart foundation and for students to attend other outdoor education. A recent evening for whānau to find out about the Better Start Literacy Approach was well-attended, aligning with our strategic goals around improving access to learning for all students. A real highlight has again been the South Wairarapa kapa haka festival. All our students took part. They looked spectacular, sounded amazing, and again made themselves proud. What an end to the third term. Massive thanks go to the Dalefield staff team and the wider Dalefield community for a superb effort in 2023 thank you.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Our Vision: Together we Nurture, Explore and Create for a Better Future. Building a better future means developing confident, capable children. TVNZ has filmed a ‘Good Sorts’ clip about us, recognising our citizenship teaching and how we’re developing future ‘Good Sorts’. Sustainability matters for a better future and DPS has become certified CarbonZero, a first (we believe) for the region. This builds on our Green-Gold EnviroSchool status, something we achieved back in the early 2000’s. A better future also means learning should prepare children for their future, not our past. Douglas Park has been recognised as an Apple Distinguished School based on its commitment to continuous innovation in education and using Apple products to create exemplary learning practices. I’m proud of our awesome staff, our amazing children, and our wonderful community.

At Douglas Park School, we aim to foster ongoing staff and student development to uphold evidence-based teaching in our classrooms, catering to diverse student needs. This year, staff and student learning opportunities included:  Becoming an Apple Distinguished School. Our Apple Team drives staff development, focusing on innovation, critical thinking, creativity, and student collaboration, revolutionising our education. Apple Distinguished Schools are recognised as some of the most innovative in the world. They’re centres of leadership and educational excellence, with a clear vision for how technology-rich environments support learning goals.  Hosting the 3rd Connect, Inspire, Learn event—a student-led conference. This event provided an incredible opportunity for our town’s children to embrace Learner Agency, taking charge of their learning, crafting presentations, and presenting them to peers  Continuing our school’s educational journey through the utilisation of the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions has not only enhanced our staff ’s teaching methods but has also fostered a more profound comprehension of mathematical concepts among our students.

RELATIONSHIPS We hold our community relationships in high regard. This year, our Tree planting at Millennium Reserve.

commitment to community service was acknowledged by TVNZ’s Good Sorts. Our students actively engage in serving the community, fostering their growth as responsible citizens. Service day activities range from creek cleaning, supporting our pātaka kai, delivering happiness packages to neighbours, and reading with our local ECEs. Our focus on relationships has also transcended into our new admin block, completed this year. This building now plays a central role in our story, as it echoes our strong connection to the local environment by incorporating our nearby awa in its design. This reflection highlights the importance of relationships in our journey and identity.

CORE BELIEFS & SCHOOL VISION Douglas Park School embraces a powerful vision: “Together we Nurture, Explore, and Create for a Better Future!” This vision underpins our innovative learning environments, where students are encouraged to take charge of their learning, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative skills. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we’ve achieved Carbon Zero certification, reflecting our dedication to a greener future. We’re also actively engaged in implementing green-gold initiatives, with the dedicated efforts of our Enviro Team. FERNRIDGE SCHOOL

We started the year with the completion of building work in five of our existing classrooms. By the end of Term 1 our tamariki were enjoying much lighter and brighter spaces, as well as more functional rooms to learn and collaborate in. We are also excited that after a massive 18 months of planning and fundraising, we will begin work on our new playground in Term 4!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE It has been my pleasure to work alongside and lead the staff of Fernridge School. 2023 is the first year we have not had disruptions due to COVID and it has been great to get stuck into some awesome learning. There are many highlights of the year which you will read about but added to are some smaller ones. Lexus was chosen to represent the region at the National Cross Country championships in Christchurch which was amazing. Our Fernridge Flames netball team won the top primary grade and then won at the netball awards too.

We finally completed the refurbishment of our classrooms and are starting on the playground upgrade. All of this has been a massive work of fundraising and support from our community. Overall, it is amazing to be able to work with staff and a supportive community, with fantastic tamariki!

Another addition to the school grounds was our new tomokanga (entrance/ gateway). This impressive structure is the culmination of two terms of creative output from Fernridge students and the very talented Jade Waetford and Wayne Pitau. Its design and carvings feature Hine-te-arorangi, a great rangatira of the Wairarapa region, as well as acknowledgment to Rangitāne and Ngāti Kahungunu as tangata whenua. Such a taonga for our kura and one that will be forever treasured. Working alongside the creation of the tomokanga, this year all tamariki have been learning about our local pūrākau (stories). Whaea Tiriana Potangaroa was given the task of weekly visits to each class to share some of our most treasured stories from here in the Wairarapa. It has been amazing to

watch our students gain a real sense of belonging and knowledge of the area they live in, as well as develop valuable understanding of te ao Māori (the Māori worldview). To help consolidate our pūrākau learning and really bring it to life we wrote and performed a whole school production to tell the story of our school’s pepeha and history. Te Ara Pūmau was an amazing celebration of three terms of hard work, practice and effort; from both tamariki and kaiako alike! The fact that each child at Fernridge School not only knows our school pepeha, but understands the whakapapa behind it is something we are truly proud of. As we come to the end of 2023, we feel incredibly inspired and motivated to continue building our kura into a space where curiosity is nurtured, learning is engaging and students build a sense of pride in who they are and where they come from. What a team, what a community, what a year that was. Kickstarting a new school year in style.

Mayors Taskforce for Jobs

Getting Wairarapa’s young people into sustainable employment A collaboration between the Masterton, Carterton, and South Wairarapa District Councils is set to transform Wairarapa’s employment landscape.

The three councils have joined forces to introduce the Mayor's Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) Community Employment Programme, a nationwide partnership between Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) and the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) that has a strong focus on getting young people into sustainable employment. The new joint approach will see the region create more job options for young people. During the 2022-23 year, 1706 people around the country benefited from the MTFJ Community Employment Programme, surpassing the target of 1,450 employment outcomes. Carterton District Council has experienced enormous benefit from the MTFJ programme in the district over the past few years as one of the pilot regions. We anticipate great things with the inclusion of all our region’s councils and taking a united approach.

Our vision - ‘E tangata (Our people): Nurtured, Empowered; Inclusive. We at Te Kura o Parakawhara (Gladstone School) are proud of the tight-knit rural community, supportive BOT, dedicated FOGS (Friends of Gladstone School) committee, wonderful staff and above all else, awesome tamariki that weave together to make Gladstone School a fabulous place to be part of.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE We are a whānau-friendly, country school where tamariki are encouraged to run, climb, create, explore & engage in our idyllic surroundings. We offer neurodiverse-friendly programmes and have completed recent PLD across all foundation subjects (maths, literacy & science). With low student to teacher ratios, highly skilled staff, modern classroom environments and a connected, supportive local community we are well positioned to enable student success through every aspect of the curriculum. Ngā manaakitanga,

Our special place continues to thrive given its positive vibe, structured learning programmes and spacious natural environment. Our work in the structured literacy & science spaces over the past 2 years is paying off and forms part of an engaging, exciting, successful curriculum. Manaakitanga, Ako and Kaitiakitanga are our underlying values that weave through, and are reflected in, everything we do. The school is organised into three syndicate groups (Y1-3 Kourarau Syndicate; Y4-6 Ruamahanga Syndicate

& Y7-8 Ōnoke Syndicate). Each of the syndicates are named after local waterways and depict the journey a tuna (aka our tamariki) go through as they move through the school. We acknowledge and appreciate the support whānau from Hurunui-o-Rangi marae continue to provide the kura as we work to continually improve our kaupapa and the embedding of our cultural narrative. Our ākonga enjoy a wide range of opportunities outside the classroom including camp, kapa haka, tracking & trapping, gardening, bee keeping, drama and sporting opportunities. The latest addition to the range of opportunities is our bike track - which has kindly been supported by funding from Trust House and Carterton District Council. Soon to arrive are a set of bikes and then we are ‘all go’. Charlie the kunekune pig is still going strong and alongside our 4 rabbits and 8 chickens, they make up our family

Good Beginnings Educare Centre was established in the early 1990s, with the Infants & Toddlers Centre opening in 2011. Both centres are housed in refurbished villas and open Monday to Friday 7.00am to 5.30pm for 50 weeks of the year.

OWNER’S MESSAGE It is my pleasure to own and manage Good Beginnings. We have a team of qualified and specialised teachers that have a passion for working with children under the age of five. Teachers work alongside the children, building strong caring relationships, installing a love of learning, fostering independence along with school readiness. Our curriculum is based on hopes and dreams whānau have for their child and the children’s interests. During 2023 we have been on many learning journeys, involving parents and making links with our local community. As you can imagine each day brings delight as a child develops a new skill or discovers something new for the first time.

The Centres are spacious, homely, and the inviting environments support child-initiated play, catering uniquely for the specific age groups the centres are licensed for. The Centre’s programme is developed in consultation with parents and children and based strongly on children’s dispositions, individual needs and interests. The Centre’s philosophy is based on primary caregiving and children learning through play, gaining agency over their learning and development. Throughout the day children can choose from a vast range of learning experiences in a carefully prepared environment. Teachers and children interact in responsive reciprocal ways to

support learning experiences that are meaningful to all. Teachers are committed to supporting children and families in their transition between the centres and to school. Our robust transition procedures ensure children have the appropriate skills for the best possible start at school. The Education Review Office visits each centre approximately every three years. The reports have found: Teachers provide a calm and settled environment that allows infants and toddlers the space and time to lead their own learning. Responsive caregiving meets their need for strong and secure attachments. Children’s learning and development in play-based contexts is supported through a sound planning framework. This involves parents and whānau and takes account of their perspectives and aspirations. Information about children’s participation, development and friendships contributes to a full picture of each as a learner. Children are well supported to be confident and curious. Teachers see them as capable learners. These approaches help children to build a strong sense of belonging while at the centre. Te reo Māori is highly valued and skilfully woven into day-to day practices.

Good Beginnings is the foundation of what we hope to be a lifelong passion for learning. To show our commitment to ongoing education we will be offering a scholarship to former Good Beginnings students who are enrolled in tertiary education or an apprenticeship in 2024.

Children are empowered to take increasing responsibility for their own learning and wellbeing. A wide range of learning activities and well-resourced environments foster their decision making, creativity, independence, and sustained play.

Nicola Burling

Teachers deliberately encourage social competence, literacy, and numeracy learning. Aspects of te reo me ngā tikanga Māori are visible in the learning programme. GREYTOWN SCHOOL

MURALS

At the entrance to the school we have four large murals that recognise our four houses, Aotea, Takitimu, Te Arawa, and Tainui. Students from across the school were involved in planning, composing and creating them. It’s a real feature of our school as you walk through the front gates. We hope you have a look and acknowledge them next time you come through.

COLOUR RUN

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The last few years Greytown School has seen many big and exciting changes. The senior block was completed and opened at the start of this year and the middle school block is expected to be finished next year. Our school population has grown and we can’t wait to see what this school will look like in the future. These are just a few of the highlights from 2023.

At the end of the Term 2 syndicates participated in a colour run where teachers splashed the students with dyes as they ran around a course. We earned this colour run as a reward for being SHARP. Students receive tokens when they show our school values. The Colour Run got the most tokens. Everyone had heaps of fun.

DISCO

At the end of Term 3 we held a disco at school organised by our school leaders. Rainbow lights shone and music blasted through the hall. We had a blast. The Wheels day was a blast.

theme for this year’s disco was “Under The Sea.” Students dressed up in all sorts of different sea animals which all looked amazing!

KAPA HAKA

We took a bus out to Pirinoa town hall, where we waited outside in our kapa haka uniforms. We were welcomed with a powhiri, then the performances started. By our turn we felt apprehensive, but we performed strong, and sang our hearts out. People complemented our set of waiata and we clambered back onto the bus feeling elated.

CHESS

We arrived at St Patrick’s School and the chess battles began. We mostly played college students. Our school did very well. Some of our students will be competing in the Nationals in Auckland later this year. Writers: Mackenzie Boyer and Riana Walker.

We left the colour run with massive grins.

KAHUTARA SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Kahutara School is an exciting vibrant school that offers many opportunities for students around learning. Our school site is exceptional, with a wonderful hill area, a challenging bike track, a large gym/hall, a swimming pool and a brand new astro turf with two tennis courts. Alongside these facilities we are proud of what we are achieving with our students, families and community.

Our school has just celebrated its 125th anniversary at Labour Weekend. This saw a proud school community come together to celebrate a school that is an integral part of Kahutara.

STEM Subjects (Science, Technology, English and Maths) are a high priority at Kahutara and we aim to extend students in these learning areas. We see these areas as core learning for students.

Hearing the wonderful stories from ex students about their schooling was inspirational to our current crop.

Our local curriculum is also seen as very important, with our wetlands, Lake Wairarapa, sand hills and the southern coast on our doorstep, offering many diverse learning opportunities. Alongside this local curriculum is a supportive community willing to work with the staff and school.

As a school we pride ourselves in catering for individual needs, we aim to make a difference in students lives by offering quality learning programmes that prepare them for the wider world. Our wonderful gardens and wetland area are exceptional and many hours of learning take place in these spaces.

We look forward to 2024 offering even more opportunities for staff and students at Kahutara.

THE YEAR THAT WAS 2023 SPONSORED BY

KURANUI COLLEGE

We have been a flurry of movement the entire year, and our students have been seen up and down the country performing in such a wide array of genres. Dance created “Pahiatua’s Little Poland” which followed the story of the Polish refugees for Showquest, coming in 3rd in the Wellington region. In Dance NZ Made “Rattlesnake” placed 3rd regionally and performed well at the national finals in Palmerston North.

ACTING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE 2023 started well, growing rolls and new buildings have become the norm at Kuranui College! We had a settled start and celebrated the successes of our 2022 learners who continued the excellent work in NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 with all levels performing well above the national average in NCEA. Particularly pleasing was the success of our Maori learners who performed well above the national average in all levels. Our school and our learners continue to excel academically and also on the sports field and in the performing arts. We were very sad to farewell our Tumuaki Mr Fuller at the end of Term 3 but are excited about welcoming our new Tumuaki 2024. Looking forward to another epic year at KC 2024.

We took 4 Shakespeare scenes to the regional competition. “The Taming of the Shrew” were selected to perform at the National finals in Wellington. They were joined by our tech crew running all things backstage for the festival, returning with the award for the most co-operative school. Theatrefest One Act Play festival showcased 6 original plays. The students worked their way to the national finals in Christchurch, where awards for Outstanding Emerging Talent and Best Production Design were awarded, and James Morland individually for Excellence in Acting.

Our Wellington Theatre Federation 24 hour play festival team created and rehearsed a play in 24 hours from start to performance. “God Helps Those” won best use of compulsory dialogue and best youth production. The Jazz Band, “Sugar” performed at the Martinborough Jazz Festival, Featherston Booktown, and the Carterton Daffodil Carnival. Phenomenal drummer Coby Neilsen won the Talent Wairarapa and our Barbershop Quartet were selected to perform in Auckland at the mixed voices section of the Young Singers in Harmony competition. Our Kapa Haka has been sharing time together at Papawai Marae, and performing at the Wairarapa Kapa Haka festival this year. Lastly but not least, “Seussical the Musical” took to the Kuranui stage. This involved singing, dancing, acting, bright lights and extravagant costumes. This was our first musical since 2017. Performing for large audiences of smiling faces was a joy.

Celebrating the triumphs & experiences of education in Wairarapa

It was a hot start to the year with participation up and records in athletics and swimming. Volleyball was the pick of the summer codes with huge growth, teams also performing well in cricket, touch, tennis and futsal. Winter sport saw participation numbers continue to climb with badminton and basketball noting the most significant growth. Hockey, rugby, football and netball also had strong seasons. A focus on trying new sports and more social teams. Alex Mason was recognised at both the Wairarapa Cricket and Wairarapa Times-Age Sports Awards for his contribution to officiating in both cricket and hockey. Sports Exchanges were in full swing again post-covid with Kuranui College taking overall wins against Tararua College and Opunake High School. It was also great to finally get the Upper Hutt summer exchange under way with cricket the shining light.

Tournament week was enjoyed by 100 of our students across basketball, netball, hockey, football and equestrian, with our equestrian team taking 8th place at the North Island Secondary School Champs. On the National Stage it was smallbore, mountain biking, chess, wrestling, athletics and e-sports where success was noted. We also had students out and about in golf, ripper, 7’s, bowls, girl’s rugby, cross-country, dog handling and the gliding and aviation continued to grow as more students gained their solo licence. We can never go past the full school tabloid sports and Staff v Student challenges for rivalry and a good laugh, and we can’t forget to mention the staff got the overall win this year. Our year could not have been so wonderful without all our amazing players, coaches, umpires, managers, van drivers, supporters of our fundraising efforts and sports leaders. LAKEVIEW SCHOOL 520 STUDENTS

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING At Lakeview School we place a great deal of importance on our school values of kindness, excellence, respect, resilience and integrity. We believe that these values are not just something that we want our students to display, but our staff also strive to model them in their daily interactions with the students, whānau and each other.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE It is an absolute honour being the principal of Lakeview School! Everyday coming to work is a pleasure; how could it not be, with our amazing staff, wonderful community, and just such awesome children! This year has seen Lakeview grow to having the largest roll in the history of the school, now well over 500 students, with 2023 seeing the biggest increase in numbers and enrolments over the course of any year since we opened in 2004. I am incredibly grateful to every parent and caregiver who chooses Lakeview for their children, and I know that every student is in such safe hands with our awesome staff and teachers. It’s hard to believe that at the end of this year Lakeview will have been open for 20 years; I am sure that the next 20 will be even better, building on the positive momentum that sees our school becoming even more fabulous everyday!

65 STAFF

While we have clear expectations in place and consequences for behaviour that does not align with our school values, we also have a strong focus on building positive relationships and teaching expected behaviours. The results of this are easy to see within the school with settled and happy learners as well as teachers who are equally happy. This is clearly evident in our rapidly growing roll and lack of staff looking to teach elsewhere. This year we have spent time implementing and embedding our

school-wide PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) behaviour systems for Tier 2 and above. This focuses on the students who may need a bit more support than most with managing their own behaviour. After achieving a 100% pass rate from the Ministry of Education PB4L team for our Tier 1 school-wide systems in previous years, we have also achieved an implementation score of 100% for our Tier 2 systems this year.

SPORT At Lakeview we take great pride in the amount of sport we offer to our students and the manner in which we compete. There are so many different opportunities for participation, from teeball and twilight netball all the way up to our Elite Sports Competition. As a school we are committed to enabling every child who wants to; the opportunity to learn, play and succeed in a variety of sports, from the traditional to those of a more specialised nature. We stress the importance of our school

values both training and playing the games as well as how our students interact with their opposition. The pinnacle of sports at Lakeview is our participation in the Central Full Primary Elite Sports Competition which takes place in Manawatu with seven other schools from around the Palmerston North area. The teams have played amazingly well and won two tournaments (Netball and Volleyball) and are tied for the top position with Athletics to come. STUDENT LEARNING

Our classrooms are all single cell (traditional) and we still write in books using pencils and pens, and also read books that are made out of paper (you know, actual books!), while also providing significant ICT resources (including one to one Chromebooks for all Year 7 and 8 students).

We are investing significantly in providing the very best teaching and learning programmes for our students, including Structured Literacy for all students in 2023, and Numicon (for

To support children with their learning, all stationery will again be provided free of charge in 2024 to every child, thanks to the support of our wonderful board of trustees!

She handles all this for over 10 teams and hundreds of kids each term. It is a credit to Maree and the rest of the amazing volunteers that Lakeview sports teams have so much success.

CULTURAL Kapa haka has continued to be a big part of the Lakeview School culture. All children take part in weekly sessions under the superb guidance of our tutor, Jimbo Ratapu. The quality of the programme delivered by Jimbo is very evident in the stand out performances by all of our groups in the Kapa Haka Festival. We are fortunate to have Mele Lio, one of our fabulous teachers, leading our school Poly Groups. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

I arrived at the Lighthouse Church with the other new students feeling a bit anxious but also very excited. When we walked into the MIS hall on the first day of school, the year eights started their haka pōwhiri which was amazing. I could feel a lot of aroha and mana from the mahi that they had put into welcoming us. I am now looking forward to our pōwhiri for the year sevens in 2024. (Imogen Golding, Room 14).

Our 2023 school year at Masterton Intermediate has included many highlights and successes. Some of our ākonga would like to share their memories of what they have enjoyed.

BASKETBALL FINALS ON MONDAY, AUGUST 14

WRISSA BOYS HOCKEY ON TUESDAY, JULY 25 Our boys team played six games against other intermediate teams from the Wellington region. We managed to reach the final where we faced Evans Bay. The score was 2-all after the full time whistle so we went to overtime.

One of my favourite things this year was being a member of the MIS Lakers boys basketball team. We played our competition on Monday evenings at the Trust House Stadium against other teams from Masterton Intermediate. There were ten teams altogether, 4 in the A-grade and 6 in B grade. The Lakers played against the Heat in the A-grade final. This was a very close game and we won by 36 points to 34. I cannot wait to play basketball again next year. (Okewa Turipā-Bennett, Room 13)

I was very proud to be able to score the winning goal after about three minutes of extra time. We became the first MIS team to win a WRISSA trophy in 2023. We won because we all played for each other. (Josh Wolland, Room 11)

MATHARAPA ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16 The annual Matharapa event, held at Wairarapa College, was an awesome learning experience for everyone involved. WRISSA OPEN RUGBY WINNERS ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30

FOOTBALL FEVER, JULY 26 & 27 Our first XI boys and girls football teams played Fergusson Intermediate at Maidstone Park for our annual exchange on Wednesday, July 26. The girls won 5-1 and the boys lost 4-1 which meant that we were awarded the trophy 6-5 on a goal difference of +1. We stayed overnight at the Top Ten Holiday Park and on Thursday morning, July 27, our bus took us to the Sky Stadium. We were very lucky to be able to watch the women’s world cup game between the USA and the Netherlands. The match ended in a 1-1 draw but there were many exciting moments. It was a super fun time for everyone involved. (Rayne O’Donnell, Room 7)

AQUABOTS REGIONAL CHAMPIONS

When we arrived at the Petone Recreation ground, the first thing that I noticed was how many big fullas were in the other intermediate school teams. Some were at least twice as heavy as I am. However, we managed to win 4 games and draw against Brandon which put us into the final against Naenae. We took out the trophy with a 15-5 victory, the first time that our school has ever won this tournament. We were all exhausted and very sore but also very happy with what we had achieved. MASTERTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa. Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa. It has been a pleasure to be the Principal of Masterton Primary School & also the Lead Principal of the Remutaka RTLB Cluster 27 for 2024. We've had another remarkable year at Masterton Primary School & I'd like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support we've received throughout the year. Our whānau and the broader community have continued to rally behind us, contributing to the success of new initiatives and sports programmes. The addition of Te Ara Whakamana and the Better Literacy Approach (BSLA), along with various off-site school-wide activities, has made us feel immensely supported. Looking ahead to the next year, we have ambitious plans to restructure our school times to operate in a more culturally responsive manner. We aim to kickstart each day in whānau house groups, fostering a deeper sense of manaakitanga and rangatiratanga across all our classes.

TE ARAWHAKAMANA

performance group.

This year we have had tremendous support from the Masterton Trust Lands Trust. They have invested in the development of Te Ara Whakamana this year with Masterton Intermediate School. Te Arawhakamana is a unique cultural response tool that utilises Māori Kaitiaki to describe emotional and social states to enable students to be more reflective with their day to day activities. Furthermore, the model enables our staff to develop deep connections with their learners by gaining a strong insight to the whānau, whenua, interests, values and even how they care for themselves & others. This process forges strong relations with the children and their whānau and in essence helps to raise their mana.

As the Lead School of Remutaka RTLB Cluster 27, we proudly oversee 52 schools spanning from Masterton to Upper Hutt. Within this expansive reach, we operate satellite sites at Lakeview, Masterton Primary, Carterton, South Featherston, Plateau and Upper Hutt Schools, where we provide invaluable support to nearly 12,000 students and their whanau.

CULTURE COUNTS 2023 has seen the re-emergence of Kapa haka at MPS! Each week our students engage in Kapa haka and waiata sessions with Matua Keepa. We have also started a Pasifika cultural group and our aim is to ultimately create a

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated Board of Trustees for the precious gift of their time. Your wisdom and governance expertise not only benefit Masterton but also the Remutaka RTLB Cluster 27 & we truly appreciate your contributions. A special mention must also be made to our staff for their efforts this year! Thanks for taking on the challenges that have been presented this year and all of the changes that continue to occur.

In our continuous effort to enhance our service’s accessibility and responsiveness to the broader community, we are actively exploring the establishment of an office space in the South Wairarapa region. This strategic move will enable us to better cater to the diverse needs of our stakeholders. We wholeheartedly recognise and appreciate the collaborative partnership between the RTLB service & the satellite schools mentioned above. These schools generously provide us with office and classroom spaces in perpetuity, reinforcing our commitment to serving the educational community with dedication and excellence.

RTLB team at the office at Lakeview School.

No matter where you find yourselves this Christmas, I wish you all good health and hope for the upcoming year. Meri Kirihimete, kia haumaru te noho, e hoa mā – stay safe, my friends. Kia tau rā ngā manaakitanga ki a koutou katoa.

MAURICEVILLE SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Mauriceville School is a place where children are encouraged to be curious about the world around them. They get lots of opportunities to explore and make sense of the world, ask questions, investigate and take part in hands-on activities. The outdoor environment is important to our kids, who love nothing better than getting creative in the sandpit, climbing trees, kicking a ball on the field, growing things in the vege garden and caring for our chickens. We have a strong connection to our local area and make the most of opportunities to get out on trips and engage students through a broad and interesting curriculum. We’re a small inclusive school with lots to offer prospective students and whānau.

Mauriceville School is a busy little school, with students having many opportunities to participate in activities and experiences at school and the local area. The students consistently show our PRIDE values (Proud, Responsible, Integrity, Determination and Engaged) throughout the school day and when they go out and represent the school. There are many highlights of the year, including taking part in Music sessions as part of the Creatives in Schools initiative. This gave our students an opportunity to discover and play a range of musical instruments from around the world, learn circle dances and make traditional Māori flutes. The children were fascinated with the different types of instruments and the sound they created. The House of Science kits have been a fabulous resource that we’ve made use of and has helped the children develop their scientific knowledge and understanding of the world around them. They particularly enjoyed learning about microbes, simple machines and renewable and non renewable

sources of energy to name a few. These kits provide hands-on experiences for students to actively engage with science. A new experience for our year 4 - 8 students has been to take part in online language lessons through Kōtui Ako (Virtual Learning Network). We have students learning Spanish, Japanese and Māori. It’s fabulous to see the children interacting with children from other rural schools in the online environment. Another highlight was our recent pet day, which was an opportunity for students to share all their amazing creations and work with their whānau, and show off their pets. As an Enviro-School we continue to have a focus on the environment. This year we have continued to plant native trees to enhance our school and provide a place for native birds and fauna. Our gardens have produced a range of fruit and vegetables throughout the year which have been used in cooking or shared with whānau. Mauriceville School may be small but we have a lot to offer students and whānau.

OPAKI SCHOOL

Ko Rangitumau te maunga Ko Ruamahanga te awa Ko Ōpaki tōku kura

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I am extremely proud to be the principal at Ōpaki School. Having attended Ōpaki as a child it has been amazing to come back as an educator and be able to give back to the community. We are a full primary, Year 0-8, who offer a vast range of opportunities. We highlight student strengths and work as a collaborative team to ensure all of our learners (staff and students) excel. We encourage learning about our local area and ensure we offer a range of EOTC opportunities. Two highlights this year have definitely been our AgriKids Team competing at Nationals and the stunning work done as part of the Dunvegan Station – Ruamahunga Restoration Trust Project. I am very much looking forward to 2024 and seeing our Ōpaki students achieve in all areas.

2023 has been a year of change and opportunity for Ōpaki School. We have taken part in a number of EOTC events, including our Rangitumau climb, Matariki Breakfast, Camps, Pet Day, House Group Awa visits, Agri Kids, Jump Jam, visits to other kura and Lansdowne Kindy, Fab Collab, Community Planting, Trapping and Tracking, Le Grā Spring Fling, and we also welcomed our new Principal. Our kura is made up of four classes: Tipu, Mahuri, Kahure and Aronui. Here at Ōpaki school the mighty Totara tree is sacred to us. The Totara was the first born of Tane Mahuta - God of the Forest, and therefore the Totara is holder of knowledge and the most tapu, special and sacred tree we have. Totara trees are naturally occurring in the Ōpaki area. In our junior school, students enter Ōpaki in Tipu. Here we believe your journey at our school begins as a seedling. A new life ready to learn and grow. Then you move into Mahuri where you become the sapling part of the mighty Totara tree. The idea is that you have grown and learnt some new things, but have many many more experiences to come.

Kahure is where we see our students begin to mature into learners who begin building on their own ideas, thoughts and desires in life whilst growing big and strong. And in your final journey while at Ōpaki school, you are in Aronui. The fruits of the Mighty Totara tree. Our kete of knowledge, of aroha and peace. Where our students make decisions, create lifelong friendships and begin to move into the big wide world. Our teachers, the Board of Trustees and parents are our guiding Marumaru, the Tiwai and the trunk of the Totara tree who stay strong to protect us, to guide us and to simply be there for us. In conjunction with our Totara Tree we are also guided by our AROHA values. A heartfelt thank you to our volunteers, whānau, Friends of Ōpaki Committee, BoT, Staff and Community for their support this year. We are looking forward to 2024.

PIRINOA SCHOOL

Its been another great year here at Pirinoa. We’ve trucked along nicely with all the usual things: reading, writing and maths, lots of sport, lots of science and history and learning how to get along with each other. But probably what has stood out more this year has been our events and trips, and the way we are linking these to learning back in the classroom.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Welcome to Pirinoa, the southernmost school in Aotearoa New Zealand, a place where kids can be kids and curiosity is nurtured. Whether it’s young folk discovering that the sandpit tower will go higher if you use a retaining wall, or a senior student designing a working mini wind farm, or whether it is a group of kids chilling in a tree, you’ll find it all here at Pirinoa. We’re a small school that punches above its weight whilst still retaining a very relaxed and commonsense environment. We are also blessed with a strong connection to the coast, farmland, waterways and mountains. Perfect spot for a school I reckon.

We went in search of the elusive Pirinoa plant up in the Aōrangi Ranges. We didn’t actually find it but that just spurs us on to try and find this native mistletoe another day! This was one of many educationally focused field trips.

and Booktown to host three of New Zealand’s best known children’s authors to work with the kids during the day and the parents in the evening. We had two beautiful visits to Kohunui Marae including one focused around Matariki. Kohunui Marae also helped us host The South Wairarapa Kapa Haka Festival here in little ole Pirinoa. It was a wonderful challenge to have nine schools and their supporters descend on us and we were proud of the manaakitanga we displayed. As well as the performances of our tamariki!

We had a fantastic art show at the historic Burnside Church. All the children produced a few artworks for this event and anyone who made it down will agree the artwork was stunning. And on the arts front we also had a wonderful Talent Show organised by some of the older girls. We collaborated with Kahutara School Water testing in the local river.

PONATAHI CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Ponatahi Christian School was founded in 1978. We deliver the New Zealand curriculum in a Christian environment upon a Biblical foundation. In practical terms this means that we value respect, diligence, integrity, fellowship, and kindness in all that we do. All students, teachers, and support staff are expected to live out the character of Jesus Christ who gave His life for the benefit of others. For more than a generation now, this has been the only local school that students can go all the way from a new entrant to a Y13 student preparing for university or a vocation in the local workforce. God is our strength, and He has preserved this school for what is now 45 years. It is to Him alone that we praise and give thanks as we approach the end of another year. A year in which for the first time we have a new classroom block beyond the original building wherein the entire school used to be under one roof, and a year we have been able to make serious inroads into an almost perpetual waiting list.

Peter Bertram

Catering for both primary and secondary, we have the privilege of nurturing our students from Years One to 13. We’ve had a year full of excitement, including: College going to Tongariro for a skiing trip; Friday afternoon options with Lego Club (Years Five and Six); Pedal Power lessons (primary school), learning road safety; Primary classes visiting Te Papa; Visit from Blake NZ, learning about virtual reality videography, (Years Seven and Eight); Visit from Mr and Mrs Jackson, sharing navy and army experiences in wars, especially Vietnam (Years Three to Six); Visit from Mr David Bertram, explaining about honey bees (years Three to Six), and much more. We’ve extended our buildings with two new College classrooms; Completely renovated the Home Economics room and reconfigured our hall into a permanent primary classroom. All needed as the Lord continuously grows our numbers. Also, the school exterior has been completely repainted. Literacy and Numeracy are big at Ponatahi, and we find many creative ways to enhance this learning. Multicultural Day is a highlight where our different cultures and heritages show off their national dress and favourite dishes. Communities all come together, and each culture is celebrated. Science and exploring the great outdoors are brought together on different levels: The Year Twos roasted marshmallows, experiencing cooking outdoors, while the years Seven and Year 2 roasting marshmallows at Donnelly’s Flat.

Eights conducted an inquiry on the health of New Zealand rivers, sampling water in two local sources, after having a visit from a local ecologist, Mr Marinus Boon. Inquiry is showcased on Open Evening: All the various classrooms are decorated with everything the students have accomplished during that term. For example, the Years Three and Four hung butterflies and spiders on the net as part of the decorations of our natural green spaces. Physical Education is taken to another level: In term three, a futsal team of years 11 and 12, (coached by one of the teachers), joined the competition (beginning of term four) at the Clareville Stadium on Monday evenings. Art embellishments by students enhance the school entrance, showing different characteristics of our school, using the letters PONATAHI.

SOLWAY PRIMARY SCHOOL

At Solway we learn together in a collaborative environment that focuses on what really matters. We have a fantastic team of highly dedicated, expert teachers who assure academic excellence across all curriculum areas. In 2023 like many schools across New Zealand we have fully embraced Canterbury Universities structured literacy approach to teaching literacy.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Our students overall achievement in Reading, Writing and Numeracy is consistently higher than the national average.

Solway remains both a little bit town and a little country. We are a school that lets kids build huts and climb trees, a school with our community at the heart of all we do.

Solway children develop a strong sense of self belief, they stand out as well rounded citizens of the world who are proud of their cultural identity.

Solway enjoys tremendous support from our families who come out in force for everything from our 6am Matariki and pet day to our Grandparents celebration.

Our School is made up of three teams, Rangitumau, Remutaka and Tararua.

I have loved being the Principal of Solway for the past 6 years. We are continuing to experience significant growth with two new classes delivered this year adding to two we received in 2022.

Greytown. Grandparents day, Matariki celebrations, pet and flower day, kapa haka evening, and the triathlon were fun events where our family and friends came along to school. We love our learning through play, we have exciting provocations set up daily and children are to be creative throughout the day (9.00-12.30pm). They learn to make, create, explore, problem solve, work cooperatively, and use their thinking skills in imaginative and playful ways, during this time we teach small, explicit groups for literacy and numeracy. We are ending our year with a team trip to the Forest School, we are SO excited for that!

The Rangitumau team at Solway (Years 0-2) have had an awesome year of learning and fun. Highlights have included trips to our local awa (river), and Pinehaven apple orchard in

The Remutaka team has had an action packed year. As a team we came together for a Matariki hakari, where we acknowledged the stars and what they represent. Leading up to Hauora day we learnt about healthy eating and keeping our bodies fit. During Chinese language

The year started with two new classrooms being delivered.

week we had a Remutaka dumpling day. At the start of term 2 we learnt about the history and stories from our local awa. We also got creative for boat day. We continue to explore ‘Play, Make, Create’ activities that inspire learners to be creative and hands-on. Highlight of the year in PE was athletics. We continue to lift the standard of te reo Māori. The Tararua Team is made up of 3 classes of year 5 and 6 students. This year has seen many fantastic learning opportunities for our students. Our year started with our annual year 6 camp which was held at Waimanaki Camp at Riversdale that helped to build

confidence and independence, always a favourite for those involved. Our Kapa Haka group has gone from strength to strength and represented the school at the annual Kapa Haka Festival. Students have been involved in a range of sporting activities over the year and Solway has had strong representation and success at inter-school events. A group of students presented workshops at the recent Connect, Inspire and Learn kid’s conference. Student Leaders chosen from our Kaitiaki group have been a part of the Masterton-wide student leaders group which has encouraged and fostered leadership skills amongst those involved.

We are so proud of our awesome Kapa Haka group.

THE YEAR THAT WAS 2023 SPONSORED BY

SOUTH END SCHOOL

It has been another full and eventful year at South End School. It has been great to rekindle our connection with Hurunui o Rangi marae. This year all students visited: the senior school had a noho at the start of the year and in Term 3 the juniors attended the marae for a day of activities. This was a great opportunity to share pepeha, hear stories from Nanny Frances and spend time together. In August, as FIFA Women’s World Cup fever took hold, we celebrated with an afternoon of football related sporting activities.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Kia ora koutou I continue to stand proud to be the tumuaki at South End School, Te Kura Taitonga. South End School is a vibrant primary school in the heart of Carterton - and the only school in Wairarapa offering both Mainstream and Montessori education. We pride ourselves on catering for all students’ needs. We promote student health and wellbeing and our beautiful and expansive grounds allow us to encourage and foster the importance of being physically active. We welcome you to come and visit us to see how we can support your child’s learning journey.

Ruud Kleinplaste visited in Term 2 sharing his boundless enthusiasm and knowledge of our native flora and fauna. Not everyone was as excited as Ruud to have wēta and spiders crawling on themselves! Thanks to a grant from Ka Pai Carterton and creative direction from Adrian Jackman, the outside of our school hall has been embellished with a colourful

representation of the Ko Wairarapa e moteatea showing our maunga, awa, tipuna and marae. Ka rawe! Our tamariki have participated with pride in many South Wairarapa and local primary sporting events this year, including hockey, soccer, rippa rugby, mini-ball and basketball. A highlight was the year 5/6 mini-ball team winning their competition. We have also been extremely lucky for all classes to participate in music sessions in Term 4 with the amazingly talented musician Jonáš Koukl. Our tamariki have been inspired and had their eyes opened to the wonders of the many musical instruments he shares. As 2023 draws to a close we look forward to having a new classroom on site next year. This is to accommodate our roll growth and is much-anticipated. South End continues to grow from strength to strength and our tamariki continue to represent our school values: being Respectful, Resourceful and Resilient in all that they do.

SOUTH FEATHERSTON SCHOOL

Three fabulous part-time learning support assistants also joined our team. Juliane Golledge, Sandy Murphy and Kylie Alexander have proven themselves invaluable, and our tamariki have benefited greatly from having these ladies working alongside them (as have the rest of us!)

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Our small semi-rural kura has continued to go from strength-to-strength. This year held great promise for us, and everything we’d hoped for has come to fruition! We started 2023 with 55 learners, and have grown to 68! We welcomed Kerri Bailey to our team in a .2 teaching position working alongside Anna Hull in our Y0-2 Junior Room. However, with extraordinary roll growth across our school (particularly our junior area) we created a 4th mini-classroom at the start of Term 3 where Kerri teaches our older Year 1s/Y2 ākonga four full mornings per week. This enables Anna to support our incoming Y0 learners and younger Y1s in those crucial early months at school. Next year, confirmed numbers in our Junior Room has seen the need to continue the split class in our junior area from Day 1.

Tana Klaricich Whole school went into town for gymnastics lessons in Term 3.

Our school continued its work alongside the Pae Tū Mōkai o Tauira environmental group. The totara and harakeke seeds that our tamariki gathered and dried in the first term of last year then sowed into multi-bed pots in Term 2, became lovely little seedlings, which were then split and re-potted two more times up to the end of the first term of this year. End result: 150 lovingly tended healthy young plants. It has been a lesson in patience for our kura as our native flora grow exceedingly slowly! Late October, our Senior Room headed off to Camp Makahika, tucked away in a secluded valley in the western foothills of the Tararua ranges. With the whole place to themselves, our nineteen Year 6s, 7s and 8s had the full attention of the Camp’s experienced (and engaging) outdoor instructor team who lead them through a series of challenging activities; from scaling a high wire obstacle course in harnesses and launching themselves down zip lines, through to a muddy six-hour tramp that included stops for learning bush craft skills like bivouacmaking and river-crossing. Wildlife highlights including feeding hundred year-old eels, searching for freshwater koura in a creek, and even finding a rare native New Zealand snail! As the

parents and teachers reflected on the last night over a milo (whilst the kids were snug in their tents under a starry sky), we were very thankful that our tamariki could all partake in such a great experience, out in Nature, where they each got to challenge themselves in new and sometimes scary (although safe) activities. Kudos to our school community who rallied with the various fundraising efforts required to send the Senior Room off on the special rite of passage that is School Camp. Our school board continues to govern superbly! We have begun our mahi within the ‘new look’ Education Review Office (ERO) process which sees schools working alongside an ERO Evaluation Partner, collaboratively identifying something that the board would like to strengthen or investigate. Our focus for the next 12-18 months will be redeveloping and strengthening our localised curriculum, and ensuring our learning is firmly grounded in the wonderful resources, history and people of our beautiful South Wairarapa. Bigs and littles inquiring and learning together.

ST MARY’S SCHOOL

Our inquiry this year was Systems and Processes. We looked at this through science topics of the human body and the universe. We also looked at how countries have systems and processes to keep law and order in society which tied in nicely with the national election.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE St Mary’s has a strong sense of family and is able to provide opportunities for all of our students to shine in our supportive, safe environment, where the individuality of each student is celebrated. At St Mary’s School we place a high value on providing students with opportunities to develop positive relationships which will help them in the future. Each class has a buddy class who they work with regularly and this makes for great relationships around the playground. We encourage all students to take the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities.

Our RE theme for this year has been Ko ahau te whakamārama o te ao, I am the light of the world. Our focus is to be the light of the world and shine bright. We can do this by helping others, using manners, showing our school values and being an upstander. Our four school values of Aroha, Respect, Integrity and Excellence and our long history are important to who we are today as a school community. This year we have celebrated baptisms and welcomed new families to the school Macy’s Peace Poster.

along with students making their First Holy Communion. Each term we teach and reward one of the school values or competencies. This year it was making positive choices, excellence in learning, aroha and respect. It is always great to see the students practising and improving such important life skills and we all love an outing to the movies or ten pin bowling for the Principal’s Day Out. Students performed well in a range of inter school activities this year with our Year 5 and 6 mathletes winning the South Wairarapa Mathletics competition, Macy winning the Peace Poster competition, Jimmy and Noah both finishing third at the South Island cross country event. Anika at Kapa Haka.

Our school values are aroha, respect, integrity and excellence and the development of these helps us to nurture children to grow as happy, faith filled, resilient learners who are inspired to achieve their personal best. We are very grateful to our Friends group who fundraise to allow us to purchase lovely new equipment to use in the classrooms and the playground.

This year’s overarching learning theme was Whānau, Whenua, and Whakapapa. The Junior team introduced Play Based Learning, creating a positive and enriching environment that fosters problem-solving, creativity, and social development. We also unveiled the Play Pod, a loose-parts play space for the whole school. The senior students enjoyed Waimanaaki Camp and a spiritual retreat. Our production Pirates of the Curry Bean was a huge success and allowed our talented kids to shine!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the warm welcome I received when I joined St. Teresa’s this year. I am thankful for the opportunity to lead and serve this exceptional school. It has been a busy and rewarding year filled with exciting learning opportunities. We have a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and nurture an understanding of our responsibility to care for God’s creation. Earlier this year, we celebrated the official opening of the St. Teresa’s Community Science Station at Donald’s Creek.

Our students have had an active and successful year in sports, participating in a range of activities across the Wairarapa. They engaged in Softball, Rippa, Football, Miniball/Basketball, and Hockey. Their excellence even extended to Chess, where they secured first place in the Wairarapa Chess Tournament. Our students displayed their athleticism in Cross Country, Swimming, and Athletics, contributing to a year filled with sports accomplishments. After a monumental fundraising effort by our Friends of St. Teresa’s team, along with generous grants from the Eastern & Central Community Trust and Trust House, we are on the brink of building a new junior playground. TE KURA KAUPAPA MAORI O WAIRARAPA

We have had another big year and continue to see not just positive roll growth but growing whānau engagement and participation in and around the kura. Whānau have supported us with a range of kaupapa this year including attendance at te reo classes and Te Aho Matua wānanga, support with haerenga, fundraising, coaching and managing sports teams, and most importantly, being there for their tamariki. We have continued to improve our grounds and this year have added tunnel and shade houses to our maara kai and planted another 200 trees around our field. We are currently in the process of establishing our own native tree nursery.

Our senior students are currently finishing off the last bit of fundraising needed for a week-long trip to Tahiti which will see them visit Tapatapuātea in the outer island of Rai’atea. As I write this, our Primary Kapa Haka rōpū, Ngā Puāwai o TKKM o Wairarapa are in Nelson preparing to represent Wairarapa on the National Stage tomorrow morning. We are super proud of their efforts and cannot thank our tutors enough for the countless hours they have put in to support both Ngā Puāwai o te Kura and Te Aho o Whātonga - nei rā ngā mihi mutunga kore ki a koutou. HADLOW PREPARATORY SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Hadlow Preparatory School is a state integrated, co-educational, Anglican school for students in Year 1-8. Hadlow Preparatory School is part of the Trinity family of Anglican schools which includes Hadlow Preschool, St Matthew’s Collegiate and Rathkeale College, all located in the Masterton area, educating students from the age of 3 to year 13. Our state-integrated schools have Anglican faith-based values which are fundamental to our Special Character. These values ensure that the students at the heart of our system are provided with the best possible teaching and learning opportunities which will enable them to thrive in an ever-changing world.

We feel incredibly fortunate with the year we have had again in 2023. Having been principal at Hadlow for nearly six years, and being principal of two schools previously, I feel incredibly privileged to lead the staff, students, and our school community. At Hadlow, traditions, our special Anglican character and values are blended with a clear, future focus to grow great people. We believe in really knowing each, and every child, focusing on developing a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy, as well as developing and igniting interests and passions across the arts, music, science, technology, and in sport. At Hadlow, our students shine, grow, and have success, in an environment that is supportive and positive. At Hadlow, we are incredibly proud of our students and teachers and what they achieve on their journey each year, and 2023 has certainly been another fabulous year in so many areas. In the classrooms, on the sports field, with music, kapa haka and the arts, expectations are always high, and it is amazing what our passionate

At Hadlow a strong link between home and school is fostered and encouraged. School culture, community, wellbeing, our vision, our values, and special character underpin everything we do here at Hadlow.

teachers and students accomplish every day. When the bar is set high, it is staggering what they can attain. Student achievement and personal excellence is always at the forefront of our learning, and so is developing the skills our students need for the future. Personal excellence is about being the best you can be. At Hadlow we believe in ‘Growing Leaders’ and giving our students, particularly our older students the opportunity to learn about leadership. Our Year 7 and 8 students are involved in the William Pike Challenge Award when they move into the senior part of the school. The award is a primary school equivalent to the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The William Pike Challenge Award Vision is “to grow a world of young explorers that are ready to take on our rapidly evolving world.” 2023 was another fantastic year and one everyone can be extremely proud of. We now look forward to 2024!

RATHKEALE COLLEGE

Rathkeale College is thriving, and we have enjoyed another year of celebrating student success across the spheres of academia, sport and the performing arts. Rathkeale College and the combined Rathkeale St Matthew’s Senior College celebrated some outstanding NCEA results from the previous year with 36 boys awarded academic colours across all levels.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE It is a privilege and an honour to be Principal of this unique school set in one of the most beautiful campuses in which you could ever hope to learn. Our students here at Rathkeale College set high and challenging goals and are supported in every way to achieve them. Their achievements are a constant source of pride and motivation for our staff. For a small school, we compete and achieve consistently well on the regional and national stage in academia, sport, and the performing arts, largely due to the full commitment of all boys to every aspect of school life. At Rathkeale, we strongly believe in Open Minds, Open Spaces and Open Futures. Our mission is to provide a learning environment that inspires students to be the best they can be in all dimensions of life.

Martin O’Grady JP

Throughout the year, boys have competed for the school regionally and nationally, in a range of sports. Our 1st XI Football team had their best season yet in the Wellington Competition finishing third. As well as traditional winter and summer sports, boys had successfully represented Rathkeale in wrestling, motocross, mountain biking and powerlifting, to name a few. Our compulsory winter and summer sport keeps the boys active, healthy, and competitive. Performing Artists have been kept busy with Big Sing competitions in Wellington and Palmerston North as well as two highly successful Arts Evenings in school at the end of Term 3. The Barbershop Quartet competed regionally and progressed through to finals in Auckland, coming away with silver medals. Chess has seen a recent resurgence in popularity and the Rathkeale team also progressed to their Secondary School finals in Auckland.

associated with the pillars: “Be at ease with your inner self”, “Have an awareness of those around you”, Be prepared to step forward’, and “Know that you stand on the shoulders of those that have gone before”. Developing character in boys will certainly continue to be a focus next year. As a school, we continue to build on the importance of boys showing empathy and inclusivity with a strong focus on activities in support of National Schools’ Pride Week, Antibullying and Mental Health Awareness. Our special Rathkeale College/St Matthew’s Collegiate School Senior College continues to provide a wide range of opportunities for our senior students. The collaboration that exists between our Trinity Schools provides a fantastic opportunity for all our students. We look forward to 2024 with optimism. A buoyant roll and a dedicated staff who support students inside and outside the classroom, allows us to continue to deliver an outstanding education for boys. Boys learn to play Djembes in Year 9 Music.

With the Four Pillars of A Good Rathkeale Man central to Rathkeale’s ethos, this year has seen the introduction of a Character Award for students who demonstrate the values

WAINUIORU SCHOOL 84

2023 certainly has been a productive year for Wainuioru School. Although the weather certainly provided a number of challenges, it was impressive to see how everyone dug deep and got through a terrible winter. Helping each other out and also pitching in to help neighbouring communities highlighted our resolve.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE It is hard to believe I am reaching the end of my second year at Wainuioru School. The school and community continue to amaze me with all that they do and represent. It has been great getting to know all the families that make up our Wainuioru whānau over the last months and I have enjoyed seeing the many successes of their tamariki. Driving out to school each day through the scenery reminds me how lucky I am to be serving this community. As the end of this year rolls around and we look forward to an awesome 2024, I’d like to say a huge thank you to the entire team at school. Your dedication to your craft, care for our students and what you bring each day make Wainuioru a great place to be. Thank you also to all those members and groups within our community who add something special and to all our families for choosing “Wainuioru The little school with a big heart.”

Students have made the most of the many opportunities and events offered, with a number of our students enjoying sporting and cultural success across a range of codes.

chance to get together and we were thankful the weather played its part so this could go ahead. Our Wainuioru School and Community Association (WSCA) and School and Community Nursery continue to be generous supporters of our school and we are grateful for the opportunities for our students this support creates. Teaching and learning is about reflecting on what we value, what works and what our philosophy of teaching and learning is.

Tennis, Jump Jam, Equestrian, Athletics, Cross Country, Chess and Motocross produced some great results from our students who worked hard to represent our school. We are proud of the mahi these students have put in to be recognised for their efforts at a higher level.

Over the course of the year, we have received some valuable feedback form our community and undertaken the initial stages of a journey that we believe will carry us forward. We are excited about what 2024 has in store and look forward to carrying on our close connections with all of those who make up our school community.

Our community continues to be a huge part of what we do and why we do what we do. Our recent Pet’s day was another

Playcentre is based on the philosophy of whānau tupu nga tahi - ‘families growing together’ and is parent/whānau led early-learning service for 0-6 year The aim is to enrich the Wairarapa community by strengthening parent engagement and recognising parents and whānau as the first and best educators of children. In practice, this means Playcentre is co-operatively governed and led by volunteer parents.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Our days at Westside are busy and varied. We have much to offer our tamariki from puzzles, books, dressup, sandpit, playdough, paints, woodworking, imaginative play, water play and physical play; the opportunities to learn through play are boundless. This past year our village has grown and we’ve welcomed many young tamariki through the Space Programme, as well as external enrolments. We’ve grown so much that we’ve opened a fifth morning session, first time in our history. Playcentre offers the unique experience for parents, grandparents and caregivers to remain on session with their tamariki. Experiencing the joy of supporting their tamariki’s learning through some awesome play activities, being part of their personal growth, gaining confidence, developing interests, learning new skills, building friendships, and basically just growing into awesome little people.

For children, Playcentre is unstructured learning where they learn by doing what they do best; being children and playing. By providing them with the access to resources, materials and opportunities, parents are learning alongside their children as they explore the world around them and how they interact with it. We would like to thank all the local organisations that have supported us over the past year allowing us to thrive. We are greatly indebted to the

assistance afforded to us by Masterton Trust Lands Trust, Eastern Central Community Trust and Countdown. Thank you also to the committee who all volunteer their time to run Playcentre. Our centre and tamariki are richer for your gifts of time and energy.

WHAREAMA SCHOOL

Whareama School is proud of its rural environment and we are delighted with the ways in which our students engage within the outdoor country spaces. This year has been a year of change with new personnel joining the Whareama team (tumuaki and kaiako). Our school is organised into three syndicate groups (Yr 1-2 Timatanga, Yr 3-5 Whanake and Yr 6-8 Whakatutuki). The syndicates’ names relate to the progress of a journey from beginning, to moving onwards and upwards, to completion.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Nestled in the heart of the countryside, Whareama School is more than just a school; it’s the home of the R.U.R.A.L learner. Our school takes pride in providing a nurturing and enriching environment where students from rural backgrounds can flourish. I’m incredibly proud to have joined the team at Whareama School this year as the new tumuaki and work in an environment that enables tamariki to reach their potential. As we reflect on this successful school year, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our exceptional teachers, dedicated parents, and, most importantly, our wonderful students. Together, we’ve made this year a memorable journey of growth, learning, and success.

Education outside of the classroom is important to us at Whareama School. We have a wide range of opportunities for our students to explore our local environment. These include camps, cluster and sport events. This year Whakatutuki has been actively involved in protecting our native endangered katipo spider at Uruti Point.

tamariki (students) took part in some amazing activities; we visited Pūkaha Mt Bruce with Ruud Kleinpaste for ‘Things that Fly’, built and launched rockets and explored the galaxy with VR headsets. Our Garden to Table programme continues to be a weekly highlight for our students where they get to grow produce in our māra (garden) and turn it into delicious edible food for all to enjoy. This year students have enjoyed taking part in our fortnightly Kia Hakinakina sessions with Emily and her team. These have involved collaborative sport games, coaching and physical activity. Our students have a strong enthusiasm for staying active, and it’s our goal to ensure their participation in a wide range of activities.

This year we were fortunate to be a part of STEM professional learning where our
