Welcome from the President On behalf of the Wairarapa A&P Show Committee, I would like to welcome you to the 141st TFM Tractors Annual Show. This year we have a great line-up of entertainment. Unfortunately there won’t be cattle judging this year because of threat of mycoplasma bovis being spread, we are, however, having a cattle display from Woolly Manor Moos, all the other animals will still be there including the popular Pet’s Corner. With great food, exhibits and a full stadium of home industries, I’m sure there will be something for everyone to do and see. We look forward to seeing you at our Show.

Carterton Mayor It is a great privilege to officially welcome you all to the 141st Wairarapa A&P Show at the Clareville Complex, located in the heart of the Wairarapa.

An event like this does not happen without hard working committed people who dedicate themselves to providing a well-run show.

Each year this family friendly agricultural show brings town and country together to showcase our local wares, entertainment, livestock judging, equestrian, dog trials and much, much more!

Thank you to the Wairarapa A&P Society, event managers, administrators, volunteers and exhibitors who strive towards providing a top class show for our region to enjoy.

Being a small provincial town, Carterton benefits hugely from an influx of visitors over show weekend. Congratulations to the local businesses that see the positive influence the show has on our district and in return supports the event through sponsorship.

Melvin Pike President Wairarapa A&P Society

Lastly I would like to thank the public who continually support this wonderful event, which ultimately keeps the show thriving! Good luck to all of our competitors and have a fantastic weekend in the Carterton District! Mayor John Booth Carterton District Council

Welcome to the 141ST TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show A&P shows have always been where town meets country. This year’s TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show has some exciting entertainers who will keep that tradition alive. Among them will be the demonstrations of horsemanship by Tui Teka who grew up riding horses to school on the East Coast, and has gone on to become winner of the prestigious The Way of the Horse competition. The search for Wellington’s Strongest Man - and woman - at the Show is reminiscent of the days when A&P Shows provided the sort of entertainment you would never find anywhere else, especially when one of the challenges will be a tug of war with a Clydesdale horse. A highlight for children will be seeing their favourite Disney film characters alive and in the flesh, courtesy of Enchanted Entertainment. Even getting their photos taken with them. As always, the Show kicks off on Friday evening from 5pm with FREE entry to the Night Show - the only opportunity in the Wairarapa to enjoy traditional rides and sideshows. Primary schools will also be competing in the annual Top Team competition. The Discovery Trail for children returns with lots of free goodies to be collected along the way as well as cool prizes to be won. Unfortunately, there won’t be any cattle judging this year as MPI attempts to eradicate Mycoplasma Bovis from New Zealand. However, Woolly Manor Moos will be

bringing some of their adorable Highland cattle on Sunday. These were hugely popular with visitors last year. There will also be plenty of other animal judging including sheep, pigs and donkeys plus the popular pets corner and poultry displays. In addition there will be a pet dog competition on Sunday. And the atmosphere will be as lively as ever on the shearing boards with some of New Zealand’s top shearers and wool handlers competing. Equestrian sports will add their unique flavour to the Show from Friday to Sunday. The stadium will again be overflowing

with exhibitors and home industries. This year an added feature is a programme of presentations by some of the exhibitors. As always, the TFM Tractors Wairarapa Show offers excellent value for money for families.

Giveaways galore along the ‘Breadcraft Discovery Trail’ There are lots of prizes and giveaways for children who follow the “Breadcraft Discovery Trail.”

The TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show is a rare opportunity to enjoy a classic sideshow experience.

All they have to do is to bring the Breadcraft Discovery Trail map - found in this edition of Wairarapa Midweek - and then follow it around the showgrounds, getting a stamp and giveaways from various exhibitors along the way.

As in past years, the sideshows will be provided by Mahons Amusements Ltd which has now been going for over 60 years. As a full-time coal miner working in the Huntly mines and part-time weekend motor cycle daredevil stuntman riding the Wall of Death motorcycle act, Roy Mahon began providing fairground amusements to the public of New Zealand in 1948. His sideshows and rides have been a popular part of the Show for many years.

They also get a voucher for a free ride in the sideshows, free drink and free punnet of chips. Once children have finished the Discovery Trail, they can drop their completed map into the entry box located at the School Exhibits Section to go in the draw for three major prizes from Breadcraft: 3-6 years: Hatchimal, 7-9 years and 10 - 13 years: an Everis 8.9 Window tablet. The school with the highest percentage of entrants also gets a $500 voucher to use for sporting equipment. This means all schools have a chance of winning the voucher no matter how

First maori The Way of the Horse Champion to perform at show the power of the mind and being able to control the body parts of the horse.”

Displays of horsemanship by The Way of the Horse champion Tui Teka will be one of the highlights of this year’s TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show.

Tui’s own quarter horse Kingston has been by his side for a number of years.

Tui was crowned champion of The Way of the Horse challenge at the inaugural Equitana Auckland Festival last December after successfully breaking in a wild horse over four days, and was a special invitation guest competitor at Equitana Melbourne 2018 in July.

“He has taught me lots about working with the mind and accomplishing liberty, working without bridles, and managing some cool trickery along the way.” The title comes with international recognition. Equitana is one of the world’s biggest equestrian trade shows held in major cities in Europe, Australasia and the USA and Tui is the first maori to win the challenge.

The 24 year-old grandson of famous showband performer Prince Tui Teka, Tumanako “Tui” Teka grew up at Tokomaru Bay on the East Coast, coming from a strong bloodline of great horsemen. He rode to school on horseback and spent his weekends taming wild horses from the age of 13. “I wanted to make my dreams a reality. Horses have always been a way of life for me.” Tui has worked at a number of studs and pre-race training stables, as well as New Zealand Performance Horses in Hawke’s Bay, which has seen him working with top show jumping stock from some of the world’s best lines. Tui has his own business Tui Teka

I put myself in the horse’s position and try and establish clear communication between us. It is about

“These opportunities aren’t common for maori so it was a huge honour to be the first maori to win the competition and show my family and our people my abilities to work with a horse. It may open up bigger doors for me, but more importantly bigger doors for our young maori. “I hope my success will inspire our people to understand that they all have the natural ability but they have to work hard to improve it.” Tui will be giving displays on Saturday and Sunday at 11.30am and 2pm.

Some thoughts on better horsemanship Tui Teka is a philosopher as well as a skilled exponent of the art of horsemanship. He often posts gems of wisdom on his Facebook page. Here are a few of them:

An enchanting time at the show Some of Disney’s favourite characters will be at the TFM Wairarapa A&P Show, courtesy of Enchanted Entertainment on Saturday and Sunday. Serena Daysh, who founded her business three and a half years ago, is likely to bring Moana, Elsa, Anna, Ariel and Tinker Bell for company when she returns for a second year.

“Kids love meeting them and believe they are the characters they have seen on screen . . .

Serena only employs entertainers who have been professionally trained and are qualified in the performing arts. Each character does a 15 minute set, written and designed by Serena, with lots of singing, dancing, and reading from books, all around the theme of the character. In between shows, they will be moving around the showgrounds, greeting children and having their photographs taken with them.

Children up to the age of eight love meeting their heroes and heroines in person, Serena says. “Kids love meeting them and believe they are the characters they have seen on screen. They are often quite star struck and a little scared at first, and approach us with caution. “Once we have engaged them, they warm up and by the end they are all over us.”

Quest to find Wellington’s strongest man and woman The Wellington region’s strongest women and men will be competing at the TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show. Westie Pies Wellington’s Strongest Man is being brought to the Wairarapa by Chris Latham. Chris competed for a number of years himself before starting to organise the New Zealand Strongman Competition which he is now turning into a New Zealand Strongman Series. “The series was born out of a need to have a recognized circuit for strongman events held in New Zealand, similar to those held overseas, with competitors placing’s being used to decide the overall New Zealand Strongman Series champion. “I’ve been running contests in Auckland for three years. “Now I am taking it to Wellington as well as Christchurch and Nelson. “The winners will automatically qualify for the New Zealand Strongman Competition at the Royal Easter Show next year.”

Chris’s choice of the TFM Tractors Wairarapa Show as the venue is in keeping with locations in other regions where he has held strongman competitions. “I like to go where there is good entertainment and a big crowd, and where people might sit down and watch it while having something to eat.” There are two men’s classes - Open and Under 105 kilos - along with an Open women’s class. There will be four competition events the Log Press, Maximum Dead Lift, Yolk Walk, and finally, the Pillars of Hercules which is the most spectacular event. Strongman competitions have been held around the world for 40 or so years, and started in New Zealand in the mid1990s. Over this time, around 45 different disciplines have evolved, to test the physical and mental stamina of contestants, Chris says.

“You can take liberties with them.” This variety is one of the things that attracts competitors to the events who have previously been involved in weight sports, Chris says.

“Organisers can choose from any of these and they are not standardised.

Kombucha specialist at show The secrets of Kombucha will be revealed at the TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show, as part of a programme of talks in the Home Industries Hall on Saturday and Sunday. According to Wikipedia, kombucha is “a variety of fermented, lightly effervescent sweetened black or green tea drinks, commonly intended as functional beverages for their supposed health benefits”. Enzymes found in fermented foods (kombucha, sauerkraut, miso, tamari, kimchi) are similar to those found in the gut, making them good for the digestive process. Kombucha is made using scoby – a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast. That’s the main ingredient and it floats on top of the kombucha, which is made with tea, sugar, water, and some kombucha from the last batch. The exact origins of kombucha as a drink are not known. It is thought to have originated in the area of Northeastern China, and was traditionally consumed there, but also in Russia and eastern Europe. Now popular worldwide, Hella Coenen has been making and drinking kombucha for seven years, and runs fermentation workshops in Mikimiki, rural Masterton. It turns out there are no hard and fast rules when making kombucha. Hella prefers her kombucha “more tart than what you buy in stores” so ferments hers for eight to 10 days.

Her favourite recipe uses black tea, with ginger and kawakawa from her garden. For Hella, kombucha is good for the mood, and a great pick-me-up during the day. People she has shared her kombucha with reported it had cured their stomach pains.

“Look after you scoby,” Hella says. “It’s alive, so treat it as something that’s alive”.

For fun, after the fermentation process, Hella puts some fresh fruit in the top of the bottle and leaves it for a second ferment.

Always cover your scoby/kombucha with a cloth to keep flies off. Avoid metal, and plastic if possible — glass is the best. Keep it at room temperature.

This will increase the fizzy element as well as the alcohol content (about two or three per cent).

Kombucha contains a low percentage of alcohol and is therefore not suitable for everyone.

Rare breed to represent cattle There won’t be any cattle judging at this years’TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show while MPI continues efforts to eradicate Micoplasma Bovis. However, Woolly Manor Moos from Otaki will be bringing eight to ten of their Highland cattle to display at the show. Based at Otaki, Lisa Berthold and Peter Holloway have had the breed for past 15 years. Highland cattle originated in the Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland and were first mentioned in the sixth century AD.

14

The first herd book (registry) was established in 1885 and is the oldest herd book in the world, making the Highland breed the oldest registered cattle in the world. The breed has been in New Zealand a long time but only registered

around 20 years ago. One of the reasons Lisa likes to bring her cattle to A&P shows is to inspire others to own them. “It is important to promote them as they are classified as a rare breed and need a good genetic pool.” Interest in the breed, which is mainly raised for its meat, is decreasing among commercial farmers. “They take twice as long as other breeds to grow and you have to dehorn them before they are accepted by meat processors, whereas other breeds don’t have the horns.” However, they make excellent cattle for small farmers, she says. “They are very pretty lawn mowers and make excellent pets. They are very docile and very responsive to humans. When I move from paddock to paddock, all I have to do is call them and they will follow me. I don’t need dogs.” Highland cattle are very intelligent, Lisa says.

“I put that down to their longevity. The girls can live up to 22 years, twice as long as other breeds. People think cows are stupid but the girls are from it. Each definitely has its own personality.”

Lisa and Peter have been taking their Highland cattle to shows all around the lower North Island, including last year’s TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show where Lisa estimates around 2500 people looked at them on the Saturday. A week before a show, Lisa gives the animals a wash and blow dry, and again just before the show, which they enjoy. “The first time you wash them, they are nervous but after that they don’t mind. When we took them to Stratford it was a very hot day and they loved being hosed down.” Micoplasma Bovis is spread primarily from animal to animal and as there won’t be any other cattle at the show, the risk is very low. Nevertheless, Lisa says the couple will still be adhering to strict bio security measures recommended by MPI.

Full summer season for Society As the Wairarapa A&P Society celebrates its 141st anniversary, it is in very good health with its annual Show being one of many events now held at the Clareville Complex this summer. The Complex has seen numerous improvements over the past few years including the planting of many heritage trees which will further enhance the 86 acres of beautiful grounds. Presently, the Society is completing a new toilet block at the northern boundary of the complex for campers, along with more tree plantings in this area. The Complex has a full summer of events coming up including South Wairarapa Pony Club Spring Show, Eventing Wairarapa, Blyth Tait Clinic, Vintage Car Club Convention, Kennel Club Show, Dog Training and Agility Show and Wairarapa Young Farmers Show. The Society currently has around 450 members who enjoy $60 worth of show tickets and special concessions to other Society events for the cost of an annual subscription of $30.

Farewell to Society stalwart The Wairarapa A&P Society lost a great friend and supporter in July with the passing of Ralph ‘Mick’ Rayner (far right, middle row in photo). Born in Carterton, Mick grew up on his family farm in Gladstone,, exposing him to the farm life for which he would later develop a passion. He was farming until the last day

of his life, which is what he wanted,” said his wife Noeline. Mick and Noeline built their home at their Clareville property across the road from the A&P showgrounds, where Rayner spent much of his time during his 70 years of service on the A&P Society.

The Valais Black Nose sheep breed has been in existence since the 15th century in the Valais Mountains of Switzerland. But it wasn’t until 1962

that it was recognised as a separate breed. Today there are about 13,000 Valais Black Face registered in the UK. Twice in history the breed almost died out. First, there were epidemic spreads of tuberculosis in 1930 and 1940, which affected the people and sheep alike in Valais. Then a breeding programme from the Swiss authorities in the 1960s tried to convince the Valais breeders to cross their sheep with more meat-yielding breeds. However, the tradition– conscious breeders refused and the experiments were given up. In 1948, the first Upper Valais Sheep Breeders Association was founded but only in 1962 did the breed become a registered breed and was included in the Swiss Sheep Breeders Association in 1964. The breed’s characteristic appearance involves black parts of the nose, eyes, ears, front knees, ankles, hocks and feet in an otherwise white coat. Ewes also

have black tail spots. Both sexes have spiral-shaped twisted horns. Adding to their striking appearance is the fact that they command a presence in their size. In Switzerland, they are known for being a hardy mountain breed, lambing easily and able to produce rapidly growing lambs year-round. They have dual use, both for meat and producing coarse carpet-grade wool. The wool has a long staple, making it favoured for spinning by the Valais farming women. The fleece has a white and fluffy look adding to the “cuddly toy” appeal. In addition to their appearance, which has seen them called “the world’s cutest breed”, they have been described as having “utterly charming” personalities. Unlike most mountain breeds which have a well-developed “fight or flight” response, there are many accounts of hikers in the mountains having engaging encounters with them.

WAIRARAPA A&P SHOW CLAREVILLE 2018

22

Come along and meet our Kuranui College students Kuranui students are delighted to have an opportunity to help with this year’s TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show. It provides a unique opportunity for the South Wairarapa college to showcase some of its very best work. Students from across the school will be involved in activities such as face painting, digital workshops for the elderly, pole picking in the show jumping ring, and helping to welcome visitors at the entrance gates. “Kuranui College is well known for its involvement in the community

and we provide our students with opportunities to appreciate the benefits of giving up their time to help others,” explains Kuranui College Principal Simon Fuller. Kuranui’s tech ninjas will be running special workshops throughout the Show on how to use digital devices such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops. This successful programme has been running each week at the college during the year. “It’s wonderful to see our youngsters sharing their ideas and knowledge with the older generation, so we would encourage you to drop by with your device and get some free assistance using the latest technology,” says Simon.

Kuranui students will also be out and about during the show providing first class performances highlighting the immense musical talent within the school, as well as presentations from the college’s amazing dance troupe, who have just come back from competing in Australia. Look out for the drama students who will be putting on street performances and mingling with the crowds. The visual arts department will be selling some of their artwork, with the proceeds going towards helping with their vision of creating an ongoing exchange between the college and St Andrew’s High School in Nuku’alofa, Tonga. We look forward to meeting you over the next few days.

Shear excitement at the show Expect plenty of adrenalin when some of New Zealand’s top shearers and wool handlers get together at this year’s TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show. Wairarapa shearing contractor Alan Grant who organises the event never knows who will turn up until they arrive on the day but the competition always attracts some of New Zealand’s top shearing sports people. For the wool handlers it is particularly important as the points they earn will go towards the world championship qualifying series. While the prize money is a bit of an incentive, Alan says most competitors are driven more by the recognition gained from winning against their peers. Shearing sports journalist Doug Lang agrees. “It is amazing the amount of time and money and travel they put in for little or no financial reward. It shows the level of their dedication to the sport.” The competition has the excitement of a Golden Shears final but also the intimacy of an old-fashioned rural shearing

gang workmates who come from around the Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu.

competition of yesteryear. It is held in a natural amphitheatre so everyone gets a view of the action, with pumping action from the shearers, and pumping music in between events. The competitors get enthusiastic and loud support of their families and shearing

Saturday will see a full day of shearing and wool handling competitions starting from 9am while Sunday will be a more informal affair with shearing demonstrations from 11am.

It’s finally here - the new HR-V. The world’s top selling crossover SUV, the 2018 HR-V gets a new look inside and out, a more responsive drive and the addition of a sportier RS model. Packed with features including LED lights, active safety tech, navigation, magic seats and class-leading space it’s no surprise this SUV punches way above its weight.
