Tapiri Angus WAIRARAPA
- CELEBRATING 60 YEARS OF BREEDING
BULL
This year Tapiri Angus is marking its 60th year of breeding Angus cattle, and their third annual on-farm bull sale at their new sales complex.

SALES
Tapiri Angus was founded in 1961 by Ross McLachlan and his father Stuart. Today it is run by Ross’ daughter Lucy, and her husband Rob Thorneycroft. The breeding philosophy remains the same today as it was then – to produce sound, quiet cattle with constitution, longevity, and fertility – the backbone of the herd. In recent years they have increased their AI programme to secure New Zealand’s top genetics. The stud has some new and exciting sires this year: the legendary Braveheart of Stern and Kaharau George 589 (a son of Braveheart of Stern), and both have produced some outstanding sons. Other leading sires include Matauri Reality 839 (a trait leader for calving ease direct, calving ease daughters, gestation length and scrotal size) and Tapiri Outlier 890. Rob and Lucy are very pleased with the bulls catalogued this year – they are structurally very sound, thick, solid and quiet, with balanced EBVs. “We are really pleased with the line-up of bulls for sale this year. We used Tapiri 19-64, Lot 5, as a yearling over R2yr heifers

fairs, notably Wharekauhau Station, who again achieved top price at the MastertonMartinborough weaner fair, for the 8th consecutive year using Tapiri genetics.
“Kaharau George 589 was purchased by Atahua Stud for $50,000 at Kaharau’s 2018 sale, and used in our AI programme 2018, 2019 and 2020.
“It is great to receive positive feedback from clients and see their commercial success using Tapiri Angus cattle,” says Rob. Rob and Lucy are very grateful to the wonderful people who have supported them, and Ross and Julie, over the many years.
“He has produced thick, sound, quiet bulls with good data; we are delighted with the progeny he is leaving. Lot 2, Tapiri 19-69, is in the top 1% of the breed for Rib and Rump EBVs (Rib +4.3 and Rump +6.2) and is a thick carcass bull.” Tapiri Angus would like to congratulate clients on their recent success at the weaner
“We are really looking forward to catching up with everyone on Wednesday 9th June at 9.30am – ready with a hot breakfast and co° ee from 8am!”. Inspection and enquiries are welcome any time. Bull walk Thursday 20 May, 9am.

Otapawa Poll Herefords A common-sense approach to breeding efficient and profitable beef cattle are the founding principles at Otapawa Poll Herefords. “Progressive proven genetics producing progressive sound progeny. Herefords are the leading efficient breed of beef cattle,” says Stuart Robbie, Stud Principal, and using Herefords in crossbreeding is one of the fastest proven ways to improve farm gate profits.”
“It is pleasing to see our clients continually topping the weaner fairs with Hereford and Hereford Angus-cross progeny. That is a benchmark for our breeding programme. The adage that muscle weighs more than fat is true. Carcass quality is especially important. It is proven that the Hereford is the most

With the superior fertility of a cross bred female, not only does she reach puberty earlier, making her ideal for yearling heifer mating, she also has a higher pregnancy rate throughout her life meaning significantly less replacements are required and an improved efficiency of the herd.
The basic knowledge about hybrid vigour or “heterosis” as it is more correctly known as has been around for over 50 years but seems to have been overlooked in recent years as some breed groups are tending towards a genomics bred animal and offering selective premium incentives. On average, commercial Angus herds can expect to achieve a 15% increase in weaning weights from heterosis with an ongoing consistent advantage for Hereford-sired progeny in average daily weight gains, feed conversion, longevity, and fertility, while still conforming to the selection criteria of premiums offered.

efficient converter of grass. We are always refining and testing that in our breeding programme.” Otapawa make selecting for cross breeding easy. “Identifying and selecting the genetics which thrive in the environment you are farming in makes way more sense to me than trying to manipulate the system and/or the environment to suit the stock. We are a commercial farming operation ourselves, so we see the advantages first-hand that reflect our breeding selections from our Stud Hereford herd into the commercial
herd. Longevity, maternal ability, and carcass quality are important profit drivers, and with heterosis, you get more bang for your buck.” Showing that as direct dollar profit in the simple table above, highlights the direct return of heterosis using a 300cwkg steer as an example. “One of the other most significant advantages to crossbreeding is the utilisation of the crossbred female. The crossbred cow is without doubt the best cow around for performance.”
“This is without a doubt the best line of Poll Hereford Bulls both genetically and phenotypically ever offered at Otapawa Station, we encourage all cattlemen serious about increasing their herds profitability to come and look and discuss your programme and breeding objectives with us.” This year Otapawa have 40 high performance station bred Hereford bulls on offer and welcome you to view the bulls and breeding programme. Every day is an Open Day, with the On-Farm Sale 8th June, in Tiraumea. Auction starts noon. Contact your local Agent or Stuart or Douglas Robbie direct for more information.

Why bull selection is so important WAIRARAPA
BULL SALES
In a commercial beef herd, without cow recording, the bull contributes about 80% of the herd’s genetic improvement. KEY POINTS: 1 Before choosing a bull, you must ÿ rst establish what your breeding objective is. This clariÿ es what the goals are for your beef herd. 2 Your genetic gain is underpinned by the progress being made by your bull breeder. Choose a progressive breeder, who has similar breeding objectives to you and can demonstrate the genetic gain they have made.
3 Assess the genetic information for the bulls presented for sale.
The booklet “Better Beef Breeding - Bull buying for the commercial beef breeder” is free to download at bee° ambnz.com/ knowledge-hub/
4 Assess bulls presented for sexual and structural soundness. No matter how good a bull’s data is, if he can’t serve a cow then he can’t pass that on – and may in fact be introducing structural problems that will limit your herd’s production.
The booklet considers these steps in detail and guides you through the bull selection process. Remember, a good bull decision today will still be directly a˜ ecting your herd in 15 years’ time. So invest well.
5 Ensure your bull adjusts and settles into his new setting and is evaluated for soundness annually.

A new fence line has been put in for another couple of hectares to make the native area bigger.
Angus said they bred easy-doing bulls that have thickness and do well in diverse conditions. They are continuing to look to build the business in the everchanging climate. The Thomson Family have been watching the seasons change and have been weathering the storms. One of those storms has been covid-19, which is still widely being recovered from today. In the last year Dandaloo Angus Stud has been
working hard to improve its business. Some highlights for the year have included a visit from the Wellington

6 Decades - 6 Tips
Dandaloo Bull Stud have been breeding quality bulls for six decades.
Here are six tips from what they have learnt along the way:
In 1961... Dandaloo Angus Stud ÿ rst began. 60 years later, in the hills of Carterton, the Thomson family are still rearing a strong line of bulls. So, the secret to their success? Good strong feet and good temperament. David and Barbara Thomson ÿ rst started Dandaloo Angus Stud on a hill country farm in Pirinoa on the South Wairarapa coast in 1961. The stud, now located in Admiral Hill near Gladstone, is run by their son and daughter-in-law, Angus and Trish Thomson. The 492-hectare farm is at points as high in altitude as the Tararua Ranges, raising hardy cattle. David Thomson said he had always been interested in breeding cattle, initially working with stud shorthorns in Australia and then on an Angus stud in King Country. “I did a lot of casual mustering on the steep hill country in South Wairarapa
1. Firstly, check your bull has a complete vaccine programme, especially for BVD. customer, which is why they always hold on to spare bulls just in case.
and observed the importance of structural soundness and the ability of cattle to move around on hard country, and that had quite an in° uence on my thinking,” he said.
“We aim to produce bulls of bone and substance that will sire productive and fertile females. They will, in turn, leave progeny that appeal and perform in the commercial market.”
To begin building their stud, David and Barbara bought three in-calf heifers from the Kahika stud in Hawke’s Bay. They said about 40 per cent of their current herd could be traced back to one of the original three heifers. “We’ve always pushed for good temperament,” Barbara said. In 1995 the family bought the farm they are on today, shifting their older cows and young bulls with them.

2. A bull’s scrotal circumference is closely related to both volume of semen and percentage of normal sperm cells – look for a minimum of 32cm. 3. Don’t buy overfed bulls. They
might look good on sale day, but the fat deposited around the neck of the scrotum will adversely a˛ ect sperm production for the rest of their lives. Too much weight on their feet can make mating properly di˝ cult.
4. After the sale, provide human contact and allow him to see his surroundings without stress. Ensure fencing is adequate, as many accidents happen with bulls trying to jump out shortly after arrival due to new surroundings.
at home, and we are soon looking at building more holding pens for safety. The main creek on their property has been fenced o˛ , which has also given better access near the bull shed. The Thomsons hope to fence o˛ more natural spring areas across the farm, most of which are right at the top.
The Thomson Family would like to thank everyone who has been involved with the business in the past 60 years. “We have learnt and grown from both good and bad experiences – and value the relationships we have with our clients. We look forward to the future,” Trish said.
Building holding yards is right at the top of their list and is beginning construction soon. For the Thomsons, consistency is key. They want to continue the work they have been doing, and always strive to be better.
5. Carry out an annual bull W.O.F before you put them out to mate. You should look for physical attributes such as body condition, feet, legs and locomotion, testes, sheath, and internal sex glands. You should have their semen tested by a vet before you put them out to mate. 6. Have a bull in ÿ t, not fat, condition before turning him out with the cows.

Ngakouka Herefords Ngakouka Herefords ÿ fth annual bull sale will be held on Thursday 3 June on farm at Mironui Station, Dannevirke. Bruce and Chrissina Donald have 22 bulls for auction. Established in 2000, the Donald’s stud is a 150 cow herd situated at Mironui, a 567ha hill country property 18km east for Dannevirke on Weber Road. Ngakouka Herefords’ cattle are born and raised as genuine, quiet, grass fed hill country cattle in commercial conditions with sheep. Bruce says he applies enough pressure “to expose weakness in the cows and enough kindness to see the positive potential that we like to pass on to the commercial breeder”. The environment at Mironui is like many East Coast farms, with its steep hills.
Bruce and Chrissina Donald
“Our cattle are street-wise living on these hills. The lingering e° ects of the drought have been a challenge, as it has for everyone, and we are happy with the way the bulls have come through,” says Bruce. “They are a consistent line of ˛ eshy, wellstructured bulls. We guarantee these bulls will shift, meaning when they go to other farms they will perform.” The Donalds have two new AI sires’ progeny due this calving, one from Australia being a moderate growth and with high meat stats. The other is an American bull whose progeny are setting records worldwide.
“He has a fantastic set of records and has magniÿ cent form and function. I can’t wait for calving in September.” Bruce is taking bookings for pre-sale viewing. Phone 06 374 2939 or visit the website ngakoukaherefords.co.nz and the herefords.co.nz website.

The McFadzean Meat Maker difference Wairarapa-based McFadzean family name is well recognised as a leading producer of weaner cattle. In recent years, the family has broadened its focus and has started selling their own line of yearling bulls – The McFadzean Meat Makers. “We have been selling bulls to a few people directly for about a decade. Over time customers returned and more people started approaching us”, says Johnie McFadzean. “It was clear that there was a gap in the market for a moderately priced hybrid bull to satisfy both the store and prime market whilst producing maternally strong and efficient cows. Three years ago we had our first official public sale.” Investing in top genetics and the right breeds has always been a priority for the McFadzeans. At times John trialed other breeds in his herd but nothing compared with AngusSimmental cross and their offspring. “Angus cattle are generally more mediumframed and hardy. Simmentals give a stronger volume and muscle definition, both are strong maternally thus making the combination extremely hard to beat,” says Johnie. Over the years the McFadzean family
has grown their cow herd from 40 to a consistent 1200 strong cow herd. “To achieve this we never compromise on constitution and also focus on top genetics. “The focus has been on having a sustainable and high performing cow herd. We expect our cows to wean a calf that is in excess of 50% of her body weight for heifers calf and in excess of 58% for a bull calf year on year regardless of the season. “Replacement heifers are selected under a strict criteria considering type, constitution, temperament and durability not colour or pedigree.” This commercially focused selection criteria is mirrored in their stud bull operation. “Our focus is on performance, not pedigree. We have a very harsh selection criteria for bulls. “Only circa 5% of our bull calves born are selected to be sold in our Meat Maker bull line. “If they don’t meet our criteria we won’t sell them. We select based on type, constitution, temperament and also cow quality. Colour is not a defining factor.” Just like their commercial operation the McFadzeans put a strong focus on the maternal role in genetic improvement and performance.
MMM 0337 weaned at 453kg = 67% of cow’s body weight
“
Our focus is on performance, not pedigree. We have a very harsh selection criteria for bulls.”
In their bull sale catalogue they not only detail key data on the bulls but they showcase the mother. “We felt it was imperative that clients get to view the cow as well as the bulls. The mother’s ability to withstand varied seasonal and pastoral conditions whilst rearing a top calf is a key ingredient to strengthen a herd’s performance.” After three years of official operation the
McFadzeans have been thrilled with the results seen from their clients. Andrew and Jen Patrick from Gladstone Wairarapa recently sold 70 weaners at the Masterton Weaner Fair. They achieved one of the top prices at the sale. Akitio Station Manager Nigel Bicknell has purchased several bulls over the past three years. He exclusively uses Meat Maker sires over his 400 cow herd. He achieved a 20-30 cent premium at the Feilding sale across yearling steers and heifers in 2020. The sale in 2021 will be held on 9 September. It will feature 35 Meat Maker bulls. The McFadzeans will have an open day on August 25.

BULL
SALES
This year will be Hinewaka Shorthorn’s eighteenth on farm Bull Sale. The past 12 months has been one of turmoil and uncertainty with the world being ravaged by covid-19. Farming has got off relatively lightly and it has been work as usual. Prices at the farm gate haven’t taken the huge drop that some anticipated and there is confidence in the meat industry going forward. Hinewaka is really happy to present the line-up of bulls for sale this year. The bulls look great. They are well-grown with real thickness, easy fleshing and soundness. They are backed up by some very good data and you are able to see the genetic progress being made in the Breedplan figures of each bull and where they sit within the breed for each trait. There are bulls that are suitable for both heifer and cow mating. There is a strong emphasis on producing cattle that are commercially focused, that can thrive in summer dry conditions, and are fertile and fast growing.
and is represented by 9 bulls in the sale. Anzac is a new sire with extremely good carcass traits with high fats for Rib and Rump and high IMF. His progeny just get better and better and we are excited about his future in our programme.
This year’s sale line-up includes bulls sired by two of the breeds highest performing sires, Royalla Rembrandt K413 and Yamburgan Anzac L278.
With the increase in dairying and dairy support on the better class of land in New Zealand, a lot of beef cattle breeding operations have been pushed to harder hill country properties, and as a result, the type of bulls needed for this class of country has changed.
Rembrandt is a breed trait leader for 7 traits. He is below average for BW and then he has tremendous early growth for 200D and 400D. He is a real curve bender
Gone are the very big framed, later maturing cattle. An efficient animal is moderate framed, with good early growth, able to finish at 18-20 months of age.
Fertility is the most important trait determining profitability in beef breeding operations. Shorthorns are one of the best maternal breeds of cattle and are an ideal breed in crossbreeding programmes. The bulls are all semen and service tested and guaranteed fertile at the time of sale. The bulls have all tested negative and vaccinated for BVD. If you would like further information on sale lots or our breeding programme, please contact us any time. We hope to see as many of you as possible on sale day.

Waigroup Angus Waigroup Angus has been selling bulls since 1967, with a shared vision of key traits in breeding bulls. Its breeding scheme was the first of its kind in international cattle breeding selecting for economically measurable traits and culling ruthlessly for problems of soundness, constitution or temperament. Today, Pinebank and Glanworth Angus continue to share a vision for Waigroup cattle. Together, Waigroup has always had a strong focus on cow performance. They aim to breed a moderate-framed, fertile cow with soundness and constitution that will calve unassisted and wean an above average calf every year under commercial conditions. In other words, a cow that will make you more money. Waigroup pride themselves on producing bulls through a very commercial system. “We strongly believe the animals that are purchased on sale day, should represent what farmers see once the animal gets to their property and starts to work.” Waigroup bulls must increase growth on the original amount of grass. No concentrates are fed. Cows are expected to work hard, grooming pasture to optimise sheep production. Our successful commercial approach is highlighted by Waigroup winning the
Tararua Farm Business of the Year in 1994 with Joe and Lea and again this year with Shaun and Fiona. Willie and Angela won Wairarapa Farm Business of the Year in 2017. Judges highlighted above average sheep performance in both businesses, driven by cattle “doing their job”. Glanworth Angus farm a summer wet environment, with annual rainfall averaging 2100-2250mm. Cows winter on steep hill country. In contrast, Taumaru is summer dry hill country with rainfall of 800mm. Due to this, Waigroup aims to breed bulls that will thrive in any farming system.
Cows wintering on hill country at Glanworth
Waigroup clients throughout New Zealand are achieving very good performance with varying scale cow herds. This is through increased calving ease and fertility, early finishing of progeny and longevity in the bulls. Going forward, we are taking a very measured and practical approach to breeding, blend old fashioned stockmanship with performance data. This is to ensure the product we sell to commercial farmers lasts and performs as expected. Waigroup are proud to back their product, guaranteeing structure in two-year-old bulls for three years. For this reason, we have many longstanding returning clients. Both Glanworth and Pinebank are participating in the Central Wairarapa breeders bull walk on 20th May.

Te Whanga WAIRARAPA
BULL
SALES
Established in 1936 by PJ Borthwick, and used as a training farm for returned servicemen after World War II, Te Whanga is one of New Zealand’s iconic sheep and beef stations producing quality meat with genetic integrity. Located at Gladstone, the 1650ha station is home to 10,000 sheep and 700 Angus cattle. The Te Whanga Angus stud was established in 1936 and initially purchased cattle from the Waiterenui and Pharazyn studs. These first animals had more than a week’s journey by foot and rail from Hawke’s Bay before reaching their new home. In 1972 Robin’s Overshiels Stud was combined with the Te Whanga Stud to add depth and allow the stud cattle to fit into a commercial station system and be top producers offering reliability and quality proven genetics. PJ believed the fundamental business would always be commercial bulls and his philosophy was to breed the best commercial bulls in New Zealand around temperament, soundness, growth and fertility. Eighty-two years later the approach remains the same. 2016 saw another addition to the stud with the purchase of a large portion of the females making up the Farfield stud from Canterbury.
These females have arguably some of the best performance genetics within the Angus breed in New Zealand and blended with Te Whanga’s strong, traditional type and reliability, are sure to take the stud to another level.
and getting set stocked amongst ewes, only coming on to better country and feed pre-mating for the management of a synchronised AI programme.
In the photo are some of the 140 bull calves born every year, which are making their way to hill country paddocks out the back of Te Whanga where they will spend the first few months of their lives.
Due to the constant pressures in the herd, and now the injection of more performance genetics, we are well on track to producing animals that are not only functional but also have power plus performance – something that is not easy to achieve.
We feel it is important that these cattle are born and bred on the hill country, only coming down to be wintered as rising yearlings. It is a testament to this type of management that makes the cream rise to the top. The cows are also made to work hard all year every year, cleaning up behind ewes,
The line-up of bulls available this June is what we believe to be our best to date.
Nothing happens overnight in the cattle breeding game, but progress is definitely in the air out here. For more information Contact: Jason Coffey (manager) 027 457 0526 Email te_whanga@borthwick.co.nz

their breeding programme and budget.
Both grew up on family sheep & beef farms. Andrew went on to be a shepherd, farm manager and sales rep before joining PGG Wrightson while Matt completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Agriculture at Lincoln University, then completed his training as a livestock cadet with PGG Wrightson in Gisborne before returning to Wairarapa.
“We have the ability to know where the market is, and where it is trending at any given time, and we can use this knowledge to advise our farmer clients on the best avenue they can pursue to market or purchase livestock to meet their current needs.”
The PGG Wrightson Wairarapa team has eight sheep & beef agents from Eketahuna and Alfredton in the north to Pirinoa in the south, as well as Rex Playle covering the dairy requirements for the area. They are well supported by livestock administrator and company stalwart Barry Todd, who keeps everything running smoothly behind the scenes. Matt will be working with farmers in the northern Wairarapa while Andrew will liaise with farmers in Masterton district. Like all the PGG Wrightson sales team, Andrew and Matt will be out and about during the bull sales season, working with their clients to purchase bulls that suit
The manager of the livestock team is Steve Wilkinson. He points out that while farmers have a good understanding of their business, PGG Wrightson’s livestock reps can provide market intelligence.
The PGG Wrightson livestock team facilitate several on-farm bull sales in Wairarapa, working with stud breeders as well as farmers requiring sire bulls for the coming season.
Wairarapa bulls are sough after by buyers from both the North and South Islands looking to purchase specialist genetics, as well as plenty of good local support. Steve says the team are looking forward to another successful year of bull sales in the district.
“The bulls are looking really good this year with the investments the local studs have been making in high quality genetics over the previous five or six years really starting to show through with quality and consistency of the sire bulls on offer.”
Breeding Better Business
This season will again see a range of breeds for sale in Wairarapa, predominantly Angus but also Hereford, Shorthorn, Devon and others.
“
we can advise our farmer clients on the best avenue they can pursue to market or purchase livestock to meet their current needs.”
As part of New Zealand’s largest Livestock network, our team of Genetics Specialists have more contacts, more reach and more market influence. As a result, they see more breeding programmes around the country and are exposed to more ideas, gaining more insights into current trends and future innovations. For the farmers we partner with, that means more advice, more knowledge, and more opportunities.

Moanaroa Angus Hugh Ramsden and Dan Ramsden are excited to offer a 33-strong line up of 2-year-old Moanaroa Angus bulls for private sale. The Moanaroa stud consists of 100 registered females run on typical Wairarapa coastal hill country. The sires are Stern 14589, Matauri Reality P357, Woodbank 2314, PukeNui 12/389, Turiroa 009575. This year the stud celebrates 113 years of Angus breeding. Moanaroa Angus was established in 1908 by the Smith and Humphries families. The bloodlines are derived from the original Mairainanga Angus stud, which has the first recorded landings of Angus cattle in the North Island, dropped off a boat in 1886 to swim through the surf to Akitio beach. Moanaroa Farming Company, over three properties, carries 700 breeding cows plus the 100 stud cows on Moanaroa.
Our aim has always been to produce bulls that suit the countryside with moderate framed cattle with good constitution that can withstand the summer dry and long winter months. We produce bulls that have a good carcass depth of rib and fleshing ability. We finish all our progeny with very good growth carcass weights. The cows perform excellent conception rates with great mothering abilities. We calve our 2-year-old stud heifers with calving ease with low birth weights. We also have our R1 stud bulls available for sale in October. You are welcome to view our bulls. Elgin Angus
Wairarapa entrant wins Hoof & Hook award
With over 70 years of breeding, Elgin Angus is still producing top quality cattle for New Zealand conditions and is proud to offer 30 R2 Angus bulls for sale this year at their 46th annual on-farm auction in Elsthorpe, on Tuesday 15th June at 3.30pm. The Central Hawkes Bay stud is run on a 330 Ha property. Known for producing excellent, easy-doing cattle with great temperament, sound structure, longevity and some natural softness, Elgin Angus’ aim is to breed bulls which enable clients to produce cost effective, quality cattle that will last and are low maintenance thus making for a sustainable and profitable business. Elgin females need to produce live calves that survive in Hawkes Bay’s harsh conditions. They are tough hill country cattle which are accustomed to dry summers. Cows are used as a tool on the property for cleaning up pasture to improve the feed quality for fattening stock more effectively. This makes them great foragers in the tougher months of the
year. Stud owner Sam Duncan knows bull selection is very important and with an Elgin bull you know the progeny will grow out to produce some of the world’s best grass fed beef at a low cost structure. “I’m really excited about the line-up of bull on offer this year,” says Sam. “With the first of the Kaharau 610 sons being some of the stand outs. We used two of the top bulls up for sale this year over our yearling heifers; one being a Kaharau 610 son and the other a Cricklewood K46 son. “The bulls have come through the season really well. Two exceptionally dry seasons in a row hasn’t been easy but all the cattle have coped. I think this is a testament to the 70 years of breeding experience here at Elgin.”
This year’s line-up of bulls are by three sires; Kaharau 610 ( William of Stern son), Cricklewood K46 and Rangatira L35. Sires used at Elgin are selected first and foremost for structure and soundness with good fleshing and natural softness, but which are also backed by good data. Comprehensive structural assessments of each bull, including semen testing, has been conducted in partnership with Vet Services in Hawke’s Bay. This process reinforces Sam’s confidence in the doability of his bulls and allows him to guarantee them for three years, which in turn gives purchasers security when buying from Elgin Angus. To view the 2021 sale bulls, please call Sam at Elgin Angus on 06 858 4909 or contact your local agent.
2021 marks 15 years for Future Beef New Zealand which was established to encourage and promote youth involvement and interest in the beef and wider agriculture industry through the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Hoof & Hook Competition, which was hosted for the first time at the Tomoana Showgrounds Hawke’s Bay in Hastings from the 7th to 9th of May. 96 competitors travelled from Gore through to Northland to the 2021 Beef + Lamb New Zealand FBNZ Hoof & Hook Competition to compete in stock judging, modules, handlers and the coveted Allflex Ambassador title. This year the 2021 Intermediate Allflex Ambassador Award was taken out by Summer Didsbury
from St Matthew’s Collegiate in Wairarapa. The Allflex Intermediate Ambassador recipient wins a trip around New Zealand to attend a competition, visit a farming operation or spend some time alongside an expert in their field to learn about their career. These highly contested awards involve an interview, a public speaking engagement, mentoring points and the accumulation of all of their points from the rest of the competition. Over the years the successful Ambassadors have gone on to achieve amazing things within the industry and all give back to the competition as volunteers in some capacity.

Koanui Polled Herefords Over the past two years Koanui Polled Herefords Ltd has expanded its land holdings into the Tararua district at Pahiatua. The company directors, Chris, Jennifer and Fred Chesterman, were seeking climatic diversity and improved drought resilience for their business based in Hawke’s Bay. The timing of the expansion was ideal as Hawke’s Bay grappled crippling drought in 2020. The new farms together with land already held at Aokautere have allowed the stud’s breeding herd to expand despite severe drought conditions last year and predictions of continued dry in 2021. The locations of the Koanui “southern sites” are ideal for Koanui breeding bulls to be sold directly into the dairy and yearling heifer mating programmes that are very popular in those areas. The herd has a strong Dairy Beef programme of selection for calving ease, moderate birth weight and good growth which, according Chris Chesterman must always be accompanied by the basics of good structure and fertility. With 800 registered and performance recorded Hereford breeding cows based

on the medium to steep hill country of Maraetotara in Hawke’s Bay, the herd has many facets to its breeding programme. The bulls that are selected for the upcoming two-year-old bull sale to be held on-farm in Hawke’s Bay in June are top of the line for beef breeding commercial herds and stud interest is also strong. Koanui has a policy of performance recording, genomic testing, health testing, vaccination and service and semen testing of all bulls sold for breeding.
Other than the rising two-year-olds for on-farm auction, many bulls are sold direct from the paddock in the spring as dairy sires and yearling bulls for heifer mating. Koanui are planning to host a Yearling Bull Buying Education Day for agents, clients and anyone interested at the Pahiatua block on Wednesday 8th September 2021 to explain the Koanui difference, service and semen testing, bull selection and genetics.
