HINEWAKA SHORTHORN
MAUNGAHINA STUD
sales Hinewaka will once again offer a top line-up of bulls for this year’s Shorthorn bull sale to be held on farm on Wednesday, 5th June at 3pm. The sale is one of the highlights on the shorthorn sale calendar as buyers from around the country make the pilgrimage to Hinewaka to bid on some of the best shorthorns in New Zealand. This year’s sale bulls include bulls sired by Australian sire Outback Spry’s Balance, one of the highest bulls in the breed today for Fat cover. Balance is producing animals that are easy finishing and easy-doing cattle. Also featuring are bulls sired by Sprys on Target. Both bulls are having a real impact on the breed. David Blackwood is excited with the type of animals both Balance and Target have sired. They are full of thickness and muscle, and are the easy-doing type of bulls suited to New Zealand hill country properties. With the increase in dairying and dairy support on the better class of land in New Zealand, a lot of beef cattle breeding operations have been pushed to harder hill country properties, and as a result, the type of bulls needed
for this class of country has changed. Gone are the very big framed, later maturing cattle. An efficient animal is moderate framed, with good early growth, able to finish at 18-20 months of age. Fertility is the most important trait determining profitability in beef breeding operations. Shorthorns are one of the best maternal breeds of cattle and are an ideal breed in crossbreeding programmes. Hinewaka places huge emphasis on the female herd. All heifers are calved as 2-year-olds, and have been for the past 30 years. Today the Hinewaka herd numbers 150 cows and the best genetics are sourced from around the world. David uses a lot of Australian and Canadian genetics as the breeders from these countries are very commercially focused and produce cattle similar to the type we have here in New Zealand. There are 25 bulls in this year’s sale. For more information visit the website www. hinewakashorthorns.co.nz or visit the Hinewaka Facebook page.
Maungahina Stud east of Masterton will have 79 lots for sale at its 74th on-farm auction to be held on Thursday, 6 June. The sale can be viewed via Auction Plus if you cannot make it, enabling you to watch and bid online, a new system that has come from Australia. In this year’s sale we have several standout Hereford bulls by our new sires Storm, Nano and Kipling. It has been a long time since we have used sires that are breeding true to type with outstanding data which is fl owing through to their progeny. It is also the fi rst time in 12 years that we have sold Elite Hereford females. This year’s Charolais bulls are a very consistent line-up. They are all sired by Maungahina Lammas, a son of Silverstream Horton who bred very well for us. Our Speckle Parks are the best we have offered. We have spent the last 12 years carefully selecting leading genetics to suit our climate and NZ conditions. This year’s standout sires are Legacy and Kidmans Cove. We are also selling fi ve of our very best heifers. For a catalogue contact me at mark.maungahina@xtra.co.nz or 027 415 8696. View videos and photos online at www.maungahina.co.nz

MAUNGARAKI CATTLE CO
OREGON ANGUS Smokin Joe K286.
Keith and Gae would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone wishing to attend our 10th on-farm bull sale. This has certainly been a different 12 months to the previous. One of the biggest fl oods we’ve seen here came at the end of November, and then two frosts at the end of February/March at Morland. Today Morland runs 5000 stock units on 567ha with 60% sheep and 40% cattle. We mate 200 stud cows annually, including yearling heifers. We sell 30 two-year-old bulls at our annual sale and up to 35 low birth weight yearling bulls in the spring. This year has seen a bit of an easing in the calf weaner prices but still making good money. Breeding stock are still bringing top money with cows and ewes
being right up there. This is possibly a direct refl ection of both meat schedules, getting some real consistency in the past two to three years. This is certainly good to see. Our sale team this year sees the introduction of two new Sires. Smokin Joe is one of the best carcass bulls we’ve ever seen plus tremendous depth and width and a magnifi cent temperament. He also has the added bonus of an excellent set of EBVs. Already a trait leader at +102 at 400, +3.9 for scrotal. No matter what you want to do with Smokin Joe’s progeny – selling weaners or fi nishing cattle – he’s got the whole fi eld covered. Power and performance in one package can be hard to fi nd. MF1965, the other new sire, has seven sons in this sale, all very much of his own type, very thick
meaty bulls. 1965 also has a very good balance of EBVs plus another good line of explosive Dynamite sons again. He breeds so true to himself, with one son going to Puketoi Angus Stud last year. We have retained a full brother, N33, this year.
Richard and Lauren Cameron are excited to offer a strong line-up of 2-year-old Gelbvieh bulls for private sale. The Gladstone Gelbvieh herd was established by Peter and Sue McWilliam, who have spent the past 30 years dedicated to improving the breed and adapting it to suit our tough hill country conditions. Over the past fi ve years Richard and Lauren have taken over the herd, still with the support of Lauren’s father Peter. They have been building the herd and will have 60 cows to calve this spring. What attracted the Camerons to the breed is their fantastic mothering ability, calving ease and overall temperament making them an excellent maternal breed whilst maintaining great growth rates and heavy carcass weights. Richard says “I’ve been surprised how well they have adapted to our medium/steep hill country block, and are ticking all the boxes I require in a hill country cow.”
Several South Island high country stations have been using Gladstone Gelbvieh genetics to improve the performance for their beef herds. Introducing new genetics has been high on the priority list for Richard and Lauren, so with help from Peter, have been sourcing semen from Canada and America to use in their AI programme. They are excited about the future of their herd and are already seeing the gains from introducing strong genetics from overseas. Unlike most growth and muscle breeds, Gelbvieh doesn’t force you to choose between maternal and growth trait - with Gelbvieh you can have both! All the bulls come with a threeyear guarantee for soundness and fertility and are available for inspection. For more information please do not hesitate to contact Richard and Lauren Cameron on 06 372 5855 or 0274 697 035 or you can email richie.cameron@xtra.co.nz
We have six very good sons by Ratanui Oracle this year. He is leaving nice soft coats and very good temperaments and great fertility in his females. We now think we are getting the type and balance in our breeding programme, which will add value to any commercial breeding herd. A big THANK YOU to all our friends and helpers, bull buyers and under-bidders who made our 2018 bull sale such a success last year. We look forward to seeing you all again this time.

HOW TO FIND THE BEST BULL FOR YOUR OPERATION The decision you make about which bull to buy this season will still affect your business in fourcow generations’ time – that’s 15 years from today. So taking the time to research your bull purchase now yields an exceptional return. Here are B+LNZ Genetics’ five steps to find the best bull for your operation. What do you want to achieve on your farm? Where are you right now in your cattle performance and where do you want to be? Use these questions to create your breeding objective or genetic plan. For instance, you might be happy with your 95% scanning, but keen to see heavier weaners. How do you choose a breeder? Once you’ve set clear objectives for your herd, identify a bull breeder with similar objectives. Ask the breeder for genetic trend graphs. The graphs should show a positive upward trend for the traits that impact on your goals. If not, look for another breeder. How do you choose a bull? First up, you need to identify which “traits” are most important to you. If you want heavier calves for the weaner sale, then you’ll need to look at a bull’s “200 Day Weight” trait. Traits are presented as Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and are in units relevant to the trait (eg 200 Day Weight is in kilograms, while Gestation Length is in days). They tell
1
you how well a bull’s calves will perform. Compare “your bull” to the average of his breed. This will give you a feel for how he rates for that trait. Even easier is the EBV graph. Basically, you want a bull to have bars toward the righthand side of the graph. Most simple to use is a bull’s $ Index. Indexes identify overall profitability and weigh up the balance of genetic merit across all the traits for a particular production system. It’s a single figure and presented as a dollar value. However, if you are focused on making progress in a particular trait, it’s worth taking the time to dig down into the EBV level of detail.

Check your bull for soundness No matter how good a bull’s Index and EBVs are, if he can’t serve a cow then he can’t pass on his genetics. The Beef Class Structural Assessment system is a good objective way to make your assessment. Welcome your bull home Take the time to settle your bull into his new home and book him in with the vet for an annual premating Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation. Want to know more? TAPIRI ANGUS Three generations of our family have bred Angus cattle in Wairarapa for the past 58 years. We are excited to present a line of 20 bulls at our fi rst on-farm sale. Our cattle are bred for soundness, constitution, longevity and fertility, infl uenced by east coast genetics to perform in hill country conditions. Our 2019 line includes bulls sired by our own top performing bulls, including Tapiri 702, who has an IMF raw data marbling score of 8, the highest for a New Zealand Angus bull, and who is himself by the renowned carcass sire Te Mania Infi nity. His dam is a daughter of the top-priced Kaharau bull of his year, Kaharau Celebrity 960, whom we purchased in 2006 and whose semen was sold to Australia and South Africa. Another of our Tapiri-bred sires, Tapiri Reality 892, is by the highly regarded Matauri Reality 839 and has produced sound bulls of quiet temperament. Our 2019 line also includes several bulls by Kaharau 12-73, a top east coast bull, showing substance, soundness, docility and very good EMA data. He is from a top Kaharau breeding cow, who has been used for embryo transfer and a son of whom sold for $27,000 to Turihaua Stud in 2018. We are also proud to present bulls sired by Matauri Reality 839, a very highly regarded bull. Matauri Reality is in the top one percent of the breed for six traits: calving ease direct, calving ease daughters, gestation length, scrotal size and rib and rump fats.

USE BULL EBVS TO MAKE MORE MONEY The fi rst crop of calves from Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) Genetics’ Beef Progeny Test have all been processed and the results are out. B+LNZ Genetics National Beef Manager Max Tweedie said the resounding conclusion is that estimated breeding values (EBVs) work. “Averaged across all of the traits we measured, bulls’ EBVs delivered 73% of the performance they predicted. “Put simply, that means using bulls with better EBVs gives you reliably better calves – that is, on average, calves perform in line with what their sires’ fi gures predicted. And, the consequence of that is better returns.” The test’s fi rst mating was in 2014 and has involved about 2200 cows and heifers on fi ve large commercial properties each year since.
A mix of both internationallysourced and New Zealand semen has been used, covering a wide range of breeds. Some sires had highly accurate EBVs, while others were low accuracy. Regardless, the sire’s EBVs predictions lined up with actual calf performance. The progeny have been monitored for key performance traits. Steers are assessed on their fi nishing and carcass traits, while replacement heifers are tracked for their maternal characteristics. “These results relate to the steers from that very fi rst mating and the heifer progeny’s own fi rst matings. “Not everyone is convinced that EBVs are all they’re cracked up to be. But this large-scale test – carried out under real commercial conditions, across New Zealand – is very clear in its fi ndings. EBVs do work,” says Tweedie. “If we drill down into specifi c traits, you see that some are strongly reliable. For instance,
the growth EBVs – 200, 400 and 600 Day Weight – are very strong, with calves delivering close to what their sires’ EBVs predicted. “By the time you’re looking at the 600 Day Weight performance, the heaviest EBV sire’s calves weigh 66kg more than the lightest sire’s calves. At $3/kg, that’s worth an extra $198 per calf.” Other traits that performed reliably close to their EBV predictions were fertility – “Days to calving” EBV – and Rib Fat. When it came to carcase performance, there was a “satisfactory” – ie actual calf performance was less than half that predicted by the EBV – for Intra Muscular Fat (IMF) and Carcass Weight EBVs. “So, yes, some EBVs are predicting calf performance better than others. While this project isn’t all about EBVs, the early and clear message is that EBVs do a good job of producing the progeny they predict they will. “The principal stands: EBVs work.”
Better EBVs gives reliably better calves.

TE MAEWA DEVONS “I put two bulls in with 93 heifers and shut the gate. How many were in calf? Answer 93.” This feedback from a client who farms in rough hill country and using only Te Maewa Bulls for about fi ve years, keeping the best heifer replacements. Fertility is the single most important economic trait. Devons are renowned for their easy calving. At Te Maewa all bull calves are physically weighed shortly after birth. Special light birth weight bulls are available for heifer mating with low EBVs for calving ease. Calving percentages in the high 90s can be expected with Devons, and 100% calving is not uncommon. Because of the docile temperament of the breed, cattle are safe and easier to work with. You will notice a marked improvement in temperament
“I put two bulls in with 93 heifers and shut the gate. How many were in calf? Answer 93.” even in fi rst-cross calves. If you want maximum hybrid vigour, heavier weaners, genuine one-winter cattle that can be killed earlier, try a Red Devon Bull. Devons cross well with any breed and when well fi nished will yield around 60% or more. Te Maewa is genuine limestone hill country, at 580 metres with very hard winters. Dumpings of snow and cold winds, with an annual rainfall of around 1500mm. M-Bovis Testing. I requested MPI to test my herd, to give clients assurance that the herd is negative. A neighbouring farm tested positive last year. No trace animals were involved as the herd is closed. – Graeme Dyke

BULL
sales
NGAKOUKA HEREFORD Ngakouka Hereford’s third annual bull sale will be held on Thursday 30th May on farm at Mironui Station, Dannevirke. Bruce and Chrissina Donald have 18 R2 bulls up for auction. Originally established in 2000 in the Ponatahi Valley in the Wairarapa, Ngakouka is now based at Mironui Station where Bruce and Chrissina run 120 breeding cows plus replacements in their own right on their 567 ha hill country property 18 kms east of Dannevirke. Their farming philosophy is based on true traditional practices of sustainability, nurturing excellent soil health based on biological principles. Ngakouka Herefords are born and raised as genuine, quiet hill country cattle in commercial conditions with sheep. The environment at Mironui Station is like many east coast properties with its steep hills. On these inclines Bruce and Chrissina breed durable, grass fed bulls that will continue to reach their potential – these ‘street wise’ cattle are fit for the hills! Their breeding philosophy aims to produce sound, wellstructured animals with longevity, high carcass yields and high fertility. Bruce prides himself on the temperament of his cattle and the ‘good-doing’ nature they display. Cutting edge technology with the use of DNA snip testing
(SNP) provides EBVs from birth which enhances decision making earlier and allows Bruce and Chrissina to test for endless heritable traits. “We believe that by selecting animals that are easy doing, easy handling, soft skins and structurally sound with good form and function you will inherently attract great results at no cost,” says Bruce. “Add good individual pasture and stock management practices to this and you will get fabulous results with Ngakouka cattle.” Phone 06 374 2939, Bruce: 027 230 2112, Chrissina: 027 229 3334

WHERE YOUR BREEDER GOES, YOU GO Is the breeder making real progress? The bull breeder’s breeding programme should be clear, easily explained and backed up by good records and clear facts. It is important to ask questions to establish the genetic merit of the herd and whether genetic progress is being made in the traits that are of interest to you. Eight important questions to ask a breeder before you buy a bull 1. What are the breeding objectives for the breeder’s herd and do they match yours? 2. Are they on BREEDPLAN or another recording system? 3. Can the breeder provide genetic trend graphs and do they show genetic gain? 4. What is the average genetic merit of the breeder’s herd, in relation to the breed average? 5. Can the breeder supply you with dollar indexes that rank the bulls for sale? 6. Does the breeder mate yearling heifers and/or bulls? 7. Does the breeder keep dry cows?
8. Does the breeder assess animals using the Beef Class Structural Assessment and/or have a strong structural selection policy? Choosing a bull breeder An important factor when choosing a breeder is that their herd must have a higher genetic merit and rate of improvement than your herd – or your herd won’t be improved. The bulls you have used in the past are a good indication of your genetic trend. It is also important there is an emphasis on structural soundness in your chosen bull breeder’s herd. There is a ‘lag’ between bull breeder and bull buyer in genetic trend over time. The buyer remains two generations behind the bull breeder in genetic trend. The two-generation lag can be reduced by purchasing bulls annually, at a level above the average of the breeder’s bulls. Once you’ve decided on a shortlist of bull breeders, try to visit them in the six months leading up to bull buying time. HERD EST 1956
Seven Hills Angus invites you to our sixth annual sale on Thursday, June 27.
The second part requires a bit more planning – these requirements should be on that list:
75 Angus Bulls will be for sale on our farm at 1167 Mangaone Valley Road, Eketahuna.
B Fertility – the main drivers of fertility are mating heifers at 14 months and then re-breeding. Look at the number of calves a cow has had and her dam, plus the Days to Calving EBV.
Our breeding goals at Seven Hills Angus are firmly focused around two consumers, firstly you the beef farmer, and secondly the consumer of our NZ Inc. beef.
The Consumer Let’s start with the consumer the discerning beef purchaser who demands a superior eating experience every time. Globally marbling is seen as the major contributor to flavour in beef. All beef grading systems (including Beef EQ and AngusPure) have marbling as a major component of the grade index.
A bull may be missing its former mates and needs time to settle in to their new location.
BRINGING YOUR BULL HOME When you buy a new bull for your herd, you can reduce problems by getting him settled in properly in his new environment. Bulls of all breeds can become upset and excited in the sale and delivery process. They are subjected to strange yards, different noises, loss of their mates, different people, different handling methods, trucking, unloading, new paddocks and different water and feed. This combination can be enough to upset even quiet animals. New bull buyers are often concerned about the apparent bad temperament of a bull that seemed quiet enough when purchased. Understanding why bulls become upset and reducing these causes of stress allows them to settle down quickly. At auction sales, possession is yours after the fall of the hammer, so careful treatment of animals from then on is important. Sometimes, the vendors provide insurance against loss in transit, accidental loss of use or infertility. However, insurance is usually the responsibility of the buyer. When you buy a bull, ask what health treatments he has received. Knowing what has been done can reduce any future health treatments. When you use a professional carrier: • Make sure they know which bulls can be mixed together. • Discuss resting procedures for long trips, expected delivery time, truck
It starts with measurable taste. Add to that meat colour, pH, fat colour and ossification. condition and quiet handling by the carrier. • Ensure you give explicit instructions on the delivery docket. Important details include ear tag details and/or brand numbers, your address and your contact telephone numbers. • When buying bulls from distant locations you may have to fi t in with other delivery arrangements to reduce cost. You should make it clear how you want your bulls handled. When the bulls arrive home, unload them at the yards into a group of quiet stock – for example, steers or herd cows. Never jump them from the back of a truck into a paddock. Bulls from different origins should be put into separate areas with other cattle for company. Provide feed and water, then leave them alone until the next morning. The bulls should then receive routine health treatments. Bulls should be drenched and held in the yards for 24 hours to prevent introducing worms and, if necessary, treated for lice. Horned bulls should be well tipped to allow easier working through yards and races. A bull’s behaviour will decide how quickly he can be separated and moved out to paddocks. New bulls should be paddocked separately from older bulls to avoid fi ghting and the risk of injury. The new bull may be paddocked with the older bulls after their fi rst mating. Source: Beef & Lamb NZ: BETTER BEEF BREEDING – Bull buying for the commercial beef breeder.
Now you have a product quantified by measurable traits that consistently (98%) deliver an eating experience to discerning purchasers of beef worldwide.
The Beef Farmer We like our bulls to look like bulls, our cows to produce a live calf every year that grows quickly into profit. The first part is easy - buy bulls you like the look of – no science, just good old eye appraisal.
A Low maintenance cost cow and the main indicator currently is the Mature Cow weight EBV.
C Growth – as much as possible in the cow size you determine is appropriate. D Eye Muscle Area – muscle is weight and EMA helps increase carcass weight. More is better. E Fats – 1. Marbling/IMF is the good fat or the taste fat. Select for higher IMF. 2. Rib/rump fats are the outside fats. It is required for chilling the meat correctly and having some softness/ cover on our cows but is very expensive to produce – the balanced approach is good. F Carcass Weight – the higher the better your steers weigh on the hook, 50% is ordinary with 58–60% more than achievable. The carcass weight EBV is a major profit driver. When we select our bulls we look for positive calving ease, both direct and of the daughters, growth as much as possible in a moderate cow or an EBV of around 70–90 for mature cow weight, having a 400-day EBV close to or higher than the mature cow weight. Carcass weight and IMF as high as possible. Pre-Sale Field Day May 30, 2019, 10am-2pm Contact Bryan for FD Flyer. MINIMUM INPUTS FOR MAXIMUM RETURNS, THE PHILOSOPHY OF OTAPAWA POLL HEREFORD STUD Nestled in the Foothills of the Puketoi Ranges, Otapawa Station is not your typical stud farm location. “Full credit must go to the generations before,” says Maria Robbie. “It must have been a real challenge living out here. I still think it’s the middle of nowhere!” Otapawa Station is a 3500ha sheep & beef breeding property in Tiraumea, and home to the Otapawa Poll Hereford Stud. Brothers Stuart and Douglas Robbie were bought up on Tiraumea, and are still farming the original family block within Otapawa Station today. Their wives, Maria and Dara, are part of the everyday running of the property. Dara is the Offi ce Administrator and looks after the 30-bed backpacker lodge while Maria assists with the Stud cattle, and farm work. “We all work well together. Everybody has their strengths and also a lot of respect for each other,” says Maria. Parents Donald and Marlene founded the Hereford stud in the 1960s. They are now in semi-retirement and enjoy days spent between the farm and garden but remain a great source of knowledge and experience. The 250-cow stud is run commercially within the station. Cows are rotated through the hill country from fi ve days post
calving until calving time starts again in September. The only time the girls spend on the fl ats is behind a wire at calving time. Birth weights are recorded, and calves are tagged, and a DNA sample is collected.
“Carcass quality is very important. It is proven that the Hereford is the most efficient converter of grass. We are always refining and testing that in our breeding programme.”
Then they are sent back up into the hills. “That includes the old girls too. We still have cows 12 years-plus in the herd doing a superb job weaning top calves.” Otapawa Poll Hereford’s breeding programme is built on keeping it simple – the best returns for the least inputs. Important traits are productivity and longevity. “At Otapawa we have a very focused approach to breeding principles, aiming to produce the best structurally sound, easy-doing cattle that thrive on the hill country while retaining
maternal ability and fertility.” “We hear of farmers replacing bulls every year due to breakdowns. That’s not right, not only is that a waste of money, but it is also creating issues within your female herd. Longevity is paramount. It’s your return on investment,” Stuart explains. “Visiting bull clients each year,
we see Otapawa Bulls up to 11 years old still sound and still working. We guarantee our bulls to do the job and do the job well. “It has been pleasing to see our Clients continually topping the weaner fairs with Hereford and Hereford Angus Cross progeny. That is a benchmark for our breeding programme.”

Hereford Cross Steers - Hybrid Vigour provides a substantial lift in performance of weaners.
The adage that muscle weighs more than fat is very true at Otapawa. “Carcass quality is very important. It is proven that the Hereford is the most efficient converter of grass. We are always refining and testing that in our breeding programme,” says Stuart. New genetics are carefully

considered before filtering into the Otapawa stud. Stuart is always researching bloodlines and progeny of any new prospect sire. “There is a lot of ‘in the moment’ trends in cattle
breeding around the world and our objectives are to find what will work for us in New Zealand.” Otapawa is gaining a lot of international attention of late. Brexit and the possible removal
of heavy subsidises is leading British farmers to search for more efficient animals. “Our emphasis on commercially run, purely grass-fed systems is appealing to UK breeders. We have flushed embryos from nine females for export to Denmark, the UK and Ireland.” Peter and Eilidh Eccles from Rockness Herefords in Scotland recently visited New Zealand with the purpose of finding genetics to add value to their cattle. “Identifying and selecting the genetics which thrive in the environment you are farming in makes way more sense to me than trying to manipulate the system and/or the environment to suit the stock,” explains Peter. “I am confident the Hereford genetics I witnessed in action in New Zealand will have a huge impact on my herd and throughout the UK.” “Watching a herd improve by introducing Otapawa Sires into the breeding programme is a reward and affirmation that we are going in the right direction – minimal input but getting the maximum returns on the ground.” The Robbie family look forward to catching up with clients and friends at their on-farm bull sale on Tuesday 4 June. It is a great day to talk bulls and enjoy some refreshments. Auction starts at noon. But Otapawa Station is also open every day for anybody wishing to visit the Stud and talk about their requirements.

BULL
sales
KNOW YOUR STUD Get to know your local stud and their breeding programme, is the advice PGG Wrightson Livestock Genetics Representative and Auctioneer Simon Smith has for beef farmers. As the 2019 bull sale season kicks in, Simon is optimistic about bull sale prices based on steady demand for New Zealand beef overseas. “Prices for calves have fallen back a bit from last year but they were particularly good in 2018 so this year should still be a reasonably good one.” Simon has been with the PGG Wrightson Genetics team since May last year and has 35 years of experience as a livestock agent. His job has him travelling around all of the beef studs in Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay . He recommends farmers visit their local stud to get a good understanding of their programme and what their aims are. “If a stud is moving along with a good programme, then farmers will benefi t from that. It is important for studs to be bringing in new blood lines and moving forward.” When judging animals, Simon recommends a mix of visual assessment for structural soundness as well as taking into account their EBVs. For all your Genetics requirements or to discuss your breeding plan please contact your local PGG Wrightson representative.
UNDERSTANDING THE TEMPERAMENT OF BULLS IN SALE ENVIRONMENTS Temperament is a major factor to check when you buy bulls. Inspect them in the yards or paddock before sale and note any unusual behaviour or activity. Note bulls that are continually pushing to the centre of a mob, running around, unreasonably nervous, aggressive or excited. This behaviour should be written down in the sale catalogue and referred to during the auction. At the sale, note any changes of temperament by individual bulls. Some bulls which are quiet in the yard or paddock may not like the pressure and noise of the auction and become excited.
Others that were excited before, get much worse in the sale ring and can really perform. Using the yard or paddock behaviour as a guide, rather than the temperament shown in the ring, you can often buy such bulls cheaper, provided they were satisfactory in other respects. When you buy a new bull for your herd, you can reduce problems by getting him settled in properly in his new environment. Bulls of all breeds can become upset and excited in the sale and delivery process. They are subjected to strange
yards, different noises, loss of their mates, different people, different handling methods, trucking, unloading, new paddocks and different water and feed. This combination can be enough to upset even quiet animals. New bull buyers are often concerned about the apparent bad temperament of a bull that seemed quiet enough when purchased. Understanding why bulls become upset and reducing these causes of stress allows them to settle down quickly. Source: Beef & Lamb NZ

TE WHANGA
Bulls may behave differently in a yard or paddock to in an auction.
Established in 1936 by PJ Borthwick, and used as a training farm for returned servicemen after World War II, Te Whanga is one of New Zealand’s iconic sheep and beef stations producing quality meat with genetic integrity. Located at Gladstone, the 1650ha station is home to 10,000 sheep and 700 Angus cattle. The Te Whanga Angus stud was established in 1936 and initially purchased cattle from the Waiterenui and Pharazyn studs. These fi rst animals had more than a week’s journey by foot and rail from Hawke’s Bay before reaching their new home. In 1972 Robin’s Overshiels Stud was combined with the Te Whanga Stud to add depth and allow the stud cattle to fi t into a commercial station system and be top producers offering reliability and quality proven genetics. PJ believed the fundamental business would always be commercial bulls and his philosophy was to breed the best commercial bulls in New Zealand around temperament, soundness, growth and fertility. Eighty-two years later the approach remains the same. 2016 saw another addition to the stud with the purchased of a large portion of the females making up the Farfi eld stud from Canterbury. These females have arguably some of the best performance genetics within the Angus breed in New Zealand and blended
with Te Whanga’s strong, traditional type and reliability, are sure to take the stud to another level. In the photo are some of the 140 bull calves born every year, which are making their way out to hill country paddocks out the back of Te Whanga where they will spend the fi rst few months of their lives. We feel it is important that these cattle are born and bred on the hill country, only coming down to be wintered as rising yearlings. It is a testament to this type of management that makes the cream rise to the top. The cows are also made to work hard all year every year, cleaning up behind ewes, and getting set stocked amongst ewes, only coming on to better country and feed pre-mating for the management of a synchronised AI programme. The line-up of bulls available this June is what we believe to be our best to date. Due to the constant pressures in the herd, and now the injection of more performance genetics, we are well on track to producing animals that are not only functional but also have power plus performance - something that is not easy to achieve. Nothing happens overnight in the cattle breeding game, but progress is defi nitely in the air out here. KAYJAY ANGUS - CELEBRATING 60 YEARS OF BREEDING Established in 1958, KayJay genetics have been shaped around the effi ciency and functionality of the cow while focusing on the realities of the market. The KJ cow has to be able to calve as a two-year-old and then get in-calf annually. Calves have to wean heavy and then have the ability to grow to a fi nished product within 18 months. Number of calves on the ground and kilograms of beef out the gate is the reality of the commercial market.
In this year’s sale we have the fi rst draft of bulls out of Merchiston Steakhouse 489. The demand for these bulls has been phenomenal from around New Zealand and Australia and we cannot wait to give clients the opportunity to invest in these industry-leading genetics. We also have the last crop of KayJay Bond H521 sons. Not only have they been in hot demand, but they have impressed clients with their ability to hold condition through mating while working extremely hard. Structurally, they are hard to fault and they have the ability to be functional while adding those extra kgs. We would like to congratulate our clients on their successes

HOOF AND HOOK A HIT AT SOLWAY SHOWGROUNDS Last weekend saw the 2019 Future Beef New Zealand Hoof and Hook competition held at Solway Showgrounds in Masterton. The event, which has run for the past 13 years, is aimed at eight-to 24-year-olds from all walks of life, with is no prior or expected level of experience required. The weekend involved steer and heifer classes, stock judging, paraders classes and a variety of hands-on educational modules, including tips and tricks around handling, meat cuts and butchery, auctioneer skills and animal nutrition. Participants are awarded points for modules, steer handling, an interview as well as their attitude and involvement over the weekend, these are added together to ascertain who the winner is for each section. There are three age group competitions - 8 to 12, 13 to 17 and 18 to 24. Hoof & Hook had previously been held at Feilding and a large number of alternative venues were looked at by the Event co-ordinator Isabelle Crawshaw says a lot of different possible venues were looked at by the organising committee but Solway Showgrounds stood out with facilities and layout to house the steers, areas for teaching modules and a show area. They are hoping to hold the event at Solway again next year. Around 80 competitors took
part, with a large number from non-farming backgrounds, Isabelle says. “We have been going around to schools to talk about Future Beef and promote careers in agriculture.” The full list of Hoof and Hook results is available on the Future Beef page on Facebook.
