Our service covers semen importation/storage/ dispatch, AI programme design, supply of synchronisation products, AI technicians and assistants, recording and pregnancy testing. The ability of ABS to package all these services together allows for significant savings in cost, time and hassle for the farmer. For stud breeders ABS is also the largest embryo production company in New Zealand offering both MOET embryo flushing and IVP production of embryos in the laboratory. Our experienced team can work on a personalised plan for high value cows to ensure the best outcomes. HINEWAKA SHORTHORN
breeding operations. Shorthorns are one of the best maternal breeds of cattle and are an ideal breed in crossbreeding programmes. Hinewaka places huge emphasis on the female herd. All heifers are calved as 2-year-olds, and have been for the past 30 years. Today the Hinewaka herd numbers 150 cows and the best genetics are sourced
from around the world. We source a lot of Australian and Canadian genetics as the breeders from these countries are very commercially focused and produce cattle similar to the type we have here in New Zealand. ° ere are 21 bulls in this year’s sale. For more information visit the website www.hinewakashorthorns.co.nz or visit the Hinewaka Shorthorns Facebook page.
WAIRARAPA BULL SALES
Hinewaka will once again o˜ er a top line up of bulls for this year’s Shorthorn bull sale to be held on farm on Wednesday 3rd June at 3pm. ° e sale is one of the highlights on the shorthorn sale calendar as buyers from around the country make the pilgrimage to Hinewaka to bid on some of the best shorthorns in New Zealand. ° is year’s sale bulls include bulls sired by Australian sire Royalla Rembrandt, the ÿ rst progeny to be o˜ ered for sale. He is a bull stacked with performance and a breed trait leader over ÿ ve traits. Rembrandt is producing animals that are easy ÿ nishing and easy doing cattle. Also featuring are bulls sired by Hinewaka Gold. Gold has excelled in the stud with many of the top bulls sired by him. We are excited with the type of animals both Rembrandt and Gold have sired. ° ey are full of thickness and muscle, and are the easy doing type of bulls suited to New Zealand hill country properties. With the increase in dairying and dairy support on the better class of land in New Zealand, a lot of beef cattle breeding operations have been pushed to harder hill country properties, and as a result, the type of bulls needed for this class of country has changed. Gone are the very big framed, later maturing cattle. An e˝ cient animal is moderate framed, with good early growth, able to ÿ nish at 18-20 months of age. Fertility is the most important trait determining proÿ tability in beef

SETTING BREEDING OBJECTIVES
WAIRARAPA BULL SALES 2020
Which traits contribute to production and proÿ tability? What emphasis should you place on each trait when selecting breeding stock? Setting a breeding objective can be as simple as choosing a breed, or more sophisticated such as increasing weaning weight, says Beef & Lamb NZ in its online booklet “Bull buying for the commercial beef breeder”. It is easier to make more progress in fewer traits than it is in many traits all at once. Likewise, it is easier to make faster progress in traits that are highly heritable. Keeping this in mind, a good breeding objective is simple but achievable, and it can be measured. For example “I put the emphasis on 200-day growth breeding value when buying a bull and my average weaning weights li° ed”. ˛ e relative importance of di˝ erent traits varies from farm to farm. Breeding herds are going to focus on di˝ erent traits, compared with ÿ nishing operations. ˛ e importance of traits and their proÿ tability can vary over time, according to changes in the market.
˜ e maternal environment
˛ e maternal environment is all about the breeding cow and her e˝ ectiveness at weaning a good calf every year. ˛ e most important ÿ nancial driver for a breeding cow farmer is the number of calves weaned to the number of
cows mated. ˛ is is at least twice as important as growth and carcass characteristics. ˛ e breeding cow needs to be able to do this every year with a low cost of input, while getting in-calf quickly, year a° er year. Up to 80% of genetic gain is achieved through the bull. Why? Because a bull is mated to 30-50 cows per year, so bulls can be selected much more intensely (you need fewer of them).
Reproduction
Reproductive performance is complex because it involves the cow getting in-calf at the planned time each year (preferably starting at 15 months of age) and producing a live calf which thrives through to weaning and beyond. Cows that get in-calf early are more fertile and wean heavier calves, giving them a higher value in the herd. Good reproductive performance is of high economic importance, but its heritability is low, so it is slow to improve genetically. ˛ e environment has a large part to play in reproductive performance. Cow management, animal health, seasonality all creates a lot of variation, masking the in˙ uence (on reproductive performance) of genetics alone. New Zealand’s national calving percentage has not changed for several years and experts believe genetics has a
role to play in li° ing percentages. Culling cows which fail to breed or wean calves will improve the cow reproductive eˆ ciency of your herd, but only moderately. Similarly, good management can help to improve reproductive performance. However the best tool available is good bull selection. Mating heifers to calve at two years of age is a valuable way to improve reproductive eˆ ciency, by rearing a calf when that heifer would otherwise be dry. It also reduces the interval between generations which leads to more rapid genetic improvement.
Summary
ˇ When choosing a bull, prioritise and choose traits that will allow you to improve your system’s production. ˇ ˛ e maternal in˙ uence – as measured by weight of calf weaned per cow joined – is the most important consideration for the cow herd. ˇ Cow size should be optimal for your environment, while maximising calf growth. ˇ Growth rate and carcass yield remain the two most important characteristics of the processed animal. ˇ Carcass quality is rewarded with market premiums and should therefore be considered in bull selection. More information is available in the booklet “Bull buying for the commercial beef breeder” which is available online at http://www.blnzgenetics. com/ÿ les/1507095472_Better-BeefBreeding-2017.pdf

spend the ÿ rst few months of their lives. We feel it is important that these cattle are born and bred on the hill country, only coming down to be wintered as rising yearlings. It is a testament to this type of management that makes the cream rise to the top. ° e cows are also made to work hard all year every year, cleaning up behind ewes, and getting set stocked among ewes, only coming on to better country and feed pre-mating for the management of a synchronised AI programme. ° e line-up of bulls available this June is what we believe to be our best to date. Due to the constant pressures in the herd, and now the injection of more performance genetics, we are well on track to producing animals that are not only functional but also have power plus performance - something that is not easy to achieve. Established in 1936 by PJ Borthwick, and used as a training farm for returned servicemen a˜ er World War II, Te Whanga is one of New Zealand’s iconic sheep and beef stations producing quality meat with genetic integrity. Located at Gladstone, the 1650ha station is home to 10,000 sheep and 700 Angus cattle. ° e Te Whanga Angus stud was established in 1936 and initially purchased cattle from the Waiterenui and Pharazyn studs. ° ese ÿ rst animals had more than a week’s journey by foot and rail from Hawke’s Bay before reaching their new home. In 1972 Robin’s Overshiels Stud was combined with the Te Whanga Stud to add depth and allow the stud cattle to ÿ t into a commercial station system and be top producers o˝ ering reliability and quality proven genetics. PJ believed the fundamental business would always be commercial bulls and his philosophy was to breed the best commercial bulls in New Zealand around temperament, soundness, growth and fertility.

MCFADZEAN MEAT MAKERS
WAIRARAPA BULL SALES 2020
McFadzean Cattle Company is wellknown for top-quality weaners and is now turning to producing a˜ ordable yearling bulls based on top-of-the-line genetics. ° is year we will have our ° ird Annual Sale and will have around 40 yearling bulls for Sale September 10th, 2020. Our 2019 Yearling Bull Sale resulted in 37 bulls at an average sale day weight of 600kg selling for an average of $3750 and a top price of $6800. Our bulls up for sale in September are selected from our 1100 cow herd based on structure, muscling, and good constitution and we would be happy to use these across our own herd. Because our bulls are well grown out at sale day, they are capable of servicing 40+ cows as yearlings. We have been farming cattle for over 40 years and the saying ‘no year is ever the same’ could not be truer this year. ° e McFadzean Meat Maker cow e˛ ciency has proved its worth this year in trying conditions, with cows still weaning bull calves over 60% of their body weight, and heifer calves weaning 55% of their mother’s body weight. At our Glenbrae property heifers and second calvers have always been mated to Angus bulls, mixed age cows have been mated to Simmental and Angus bulls. Our Glenburn property use Angus and Meat Maker Bulls across their herd. Replacements are selected on their merits regardless of whether they are from heifers or mixed age cows and have varying percentages of Angus and

Simmental in them. Traditional cattlemen have always questioned where you go a˝ er the ÿ rst cross. ° e answer is back to whichever breed you wish to inˆ uence the next generation. We think we have proved this with commercial success. Our hill country weaners have topped the Masterton weaner fair for 30-odd years and o˝ en achieved the highest prices in New Zealand.
At this year’s weaner fair 16th March, we sold 184 bull calves for an average of $1039 with a top price of $1190, which we were extremely pleased with. We have always been supported by a strong bench of repeat buyers with the occasional new buyer coming in from time to time. Purchasers of bulls two years ago have had calves on the ground this season. We have had good reports of noticeable li˝ in size and musculinity. We look forward to reports from ÿ nishers. All our bulls are semen tested, BVD injected and DNA parentage tested before sale. We look forward to seeing you at our Open Day and Sale Day.

ADVERTORIAL
Farmers success priority for Dandaloo Nestled in the Gladstone hills along Admiral Rd, at Dandaloo Angus Stud the next lot of the Thomson’s black angus bulls are almost ready for sale. Trish and Angus Thomson with their 3 children have been on the property for 12 years now, but their roots go much deeper – the stud was established almost 60 years ago by his parents David and Barbara. At between 400 to 550 metres above sea level, the same height of the Remutakas, Dandaloo often gets a winter fluttering of snow which helps prepare their bulls for all conditions. “We’ve got that medium rolling hill country up here. And have been lucky enough over the last 12 years to purchase land on our original boundaries - the farm is currently 500 hectares and has the run off in Greytown of 50 hectares to support it. This year we contended with the same issues as many Farmers in NZ. It’s not the best year to be a farmer the drought has meant we have spent far more hours on animal care and then Covid 19 has slowed down the processing plants, meaning we can’t get stock away. In the past year we have fenced our waterways and extended our native bush block. Every year we have a long list of improvements that we want to do and achievements that we have done. It keeps you motivated and focused on the future of your farm and its capabilities. You research …then trial …. then live it. You have to stand by what you believe and practice what you preach. We are regularly audited which keeps us up to date with current stock health practices, biodiversity and safety standards. “We’re trying to breed that hearty cattle that will survive anywhere in New Zealand. You want them to be able to cope with harsher conditions, such as this year’s drought” or as Angus says “You need to breed stock that can survive all these damn audits that are constantly coming at us”. Why the Angus breed? – “When David first bought them, they were nice quiet bulls and always fetched a higher price.” Today the cornerstone of their business is their 230-strong breeding herd. Heifers are mated as yearlings and calving ease is a priority ahead of birth weights.
We’re trying to breed that hearty cattle that will survive anywhere in New Zealand. You want them to be able to cope with harsher conditions, such as this year’s drought. “For us it’s more about the cow and their calving ability. You want a decent size calf that will survive well but you don’t want too bigger calf that makes the birth difficult.” Trish says they look for several attributes in their breeding cows, including fertility and calving ease, structural soundness and constitution, longevity and temperament.
“It’s about making other farmers successful. We want commercial breeders to do well with their Dandaloo sires,” Trish says. Last year the Thomson’s became an Angus Pure Partner. “It’s marketing grass-fed good beef; people know what they are eating. It’s not artificial in any way. A pure food source”
“Anything with a toey temperament we cull straight away. We believe you should be able to be in close proximately of a bull – this shows a content temperament”
We have a variety of bulls suited to a variety of budgets. We always follow it with hospitality which will be no different this year other than adhering to the Covid 19 regulations.
We have a well-documented genetics database helps ensures good results at the local weaner fair and for commercial clients.
Any queries or if you wish to come and view the bulls before the auction please give us a call, phone 06 3727065.

WHERE YOUR BREEDER GOES, YOU GO Is the breeder making real progress?
WAIRARAPA BULL SALES 2020
˜ e bull breeder’s breeding programme should be clear, easily explained and backed up by good records and clear facts. It is important to ask questions to establish the genetic merit of the herd and whether genetic progress is being made in the traits that are of interest to you.
Eight important questions to ask a breeder before you buy a bull
1. 2. 3.
What are the breeding objectives for the breeder’s herd and do they match yours? Are they on BREEDPLAN or another recording system? Can the breeder provide genetic trend graphs and do they show
4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
genetic gain? What is the average genetic merit of the breeder’s herd, in relation to the breed average? Can the breeder supply you with dollar indexes that rank the bulls for sale? Does the breeder mate yearling heifers and/or bulls? Does the breeder keep dry cows? Does the breeder assess animals using the Beef Class Structural Assessment and/or have a strong structural selection policy?
Choosing a bull breeder
An important factor when choosing a breeder is that their herd must have a higher genetic merit and rate of improvement than your herd – or your
herd won’t be improved. ˜ e bulls you have used in the past are a good indication of your genetic trend. It is also important there is an emphasis on structural soundness in your chosen bull breeder’s herd. ˜ ere is a ‘lag’ between bull breeder and bull buyer in genetic trend over time. ˜ e buyer remains two generations behind the bull breeder in genetic trend. ˜ e two-generation lag can be reduced by purchasing bulls annually, at a level above the average of the breeder’s bulls. Once you’ve decided on a shortlist of bull breeders, try to visit them in the six months leading up to bull buying time. TE TAUMATA POLL HEREFORDS
WAIRARAPA BULL SALES 2020
Alistair and Eileen McWilliam are looking forward to o˜ ering 28 top Poll Hereford bulls for sale at Te Taumata on May 27th at 1pm. Covid-19 lockdown restrictions have caused some uncertainty about the format of bull sales across the country this autumn. At Te Taumata we will be holding our usual on-farm auction with all Covid-19 MPI protocols in place. ° e bulls are available for viewing ahead of sale day, just give us a call to organise a time. It is always better to select a breeding bull in the ˛ esh before purchasing. ° e bulls catalogued are the result of nearly six decades of breeding for constitution and doing ability, maternal ability, soundness, longevity and carcass weight and quality. We have never wavered from our focus on producing bulls that will produce fast-growing steers and proÿ table, quality replacement heifers for our hill country clients. ° ere is no greater reward for us than helping our clients to meet their farm production targets. Sale bulls are sired by our senior herd sires Te Taumata Foundation 14684, Te Taumata Deluxe 12520, Te Taumata Horizon 16894 and Te Taumata Force 14683. Te Taumata Foundation has a strong representation in our sale line-up. He is sired by international powerhouse NJW Hometown 10Y, a bull we imported as semen in 2013. ° e carcass, depth of rib and ˛ eshing ability of Foundation and

his progeny is just phenomenal. ° ere are also a very good group of bulls sired by NJW Duration 136X. We purchased a half share in Duration in 2011 and have been really impressed by his daughters.
Te Taumata bulls are working from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island and are guaranteed to shi˙ and perform anywhere. If you are interested in knowing more about our farm and breeding programme, please come for a visit. November is a great time to see cows with their calves at foot and our herd sires walking the paddock. ° e sale bulls are ready to work, so give us a ring if you would like more information or a catalogue. If you are unable to, or do not wish to visit the farm in person we can talk you through the bulls over the phone and provide more photos and videos to help with bull selection. Phone Alistair on 0274550099. ° ere is an electronic version of our bull sale catalogue on our website www. tetaumata.co.nz and more information and photos. Bred in Wairarapa for East Coast hill country conditions for 59 years, our cattle have a strong East Coast genetic in˜ uence. We aim to breed sound, quiet cattle with constitution, longevity and fertility. Tapiri Angus was founded in 1961 by Ross McLachlan and his father Stuart, with 2018 marking the transition of the third generation of our family into the stud business. Located 10 minutes north of Masterton, in Rangitumau, the farm is comprised of Tapiri Angus and the Lodge Southdown sheep stud, as well as a commercial ewe breeding ˜ ock. In 2019, a sale complex was built on farm to hold annual bull sales. We are pleased to present sale bulls this year by Tapiri Outlier 890, LD Capitalist 316, Tapiri 702 and Kaharau 73. In addition to our bulls, we pride ourselves on the longevity, quiet temperament and constitutional soundness of our cows and heifers, who make up the backbone of our stud. We welcome you to inspect our cattle at any time and look forward to seeing you at our 2020 sale, on Wednesday 3 June, 9.30am. OTAPAWA POLL HEREFORD
WAIRARAPA BULL SALES 2020
Nestled in the Foothills of the Puketoi Ranges, Otapawa Station is not your typical stud farm location. “Full credit must go to the generations before,” says Maria Robbie. “It must have been a real challenge living out here. I still think it’s the middle of nowhere!” Otapawa Station is a 3500ha sheep & beef breeding property in Tiraumea, and home to the Otapawa Poll Hereford Stud. Brothers Stuart and Douglas Robbie were bought up on Tiraumea, and are still farming the original family block within Otapawa Station today. ˜ eir wives, Maria and Dara, are part of the everyday running of the property. Dara is the O° ce Administrator and looks a˛ er the 30-bed backpacker lodge while Maria assists with the Stud cattle, and farm work. “We all work well together. Everybody has their strengths and also a lot of respect for each other” says Maria. Parents Donald and Marlene founded the Hereford stud in the 1960s. ˜ ey are now in semi-retirement and enjoy days spent between the farm and garden but remain a great source of knowledge and experience. ˜ e 250-cow stud is run commercially within the station. Cows are rotated through the hill country from ÿ ve days post calving until calving time starts again in September. ˜ e only time the girls spend on the ˙ ats is behind a wire at calving time. Birth weights are recorded, and calves are tagged, and a DNA sample is collected. ˜ en they are sent back up into the hills.
Otapawa will be hosting Open Paddock Sales this year, due to uncertain covid-19 restrictions. We welcome you to view and purchase the Bulls direct from the Paddock. Printed catalogue available on farm and our website www.otapawa.co.nz “˜ at includes the old girls too. We still have cows 12 years plus in the herd doing a superb job weaning top calves.” Otapawa Poll Hereford’s breeding programme is built on keeping it simple - the best returns for the lest inputs. Important traits are productivity and longevity. “At Otapawa we have a very focused approach to breeding principles, aiming to produce the best structurally sound, easy doing cattle that thrive on the hill country while retaining maternal ability and fertility.” “We hear of farmers replacing bulls every year due to breakdowns. ˜ at’s not right, not only is that a waste of money, but it is also creating issues within your female
herd. Longevity is paramount. It’s your return on investment,” Stuart explains. “Visiting bull clients each year, we see Otapawa Bulls up to 11 years old still sound and still working. We guarantee our bulls to do the job and do the job well. “It has been pleasing to see our Clients continually topping the weaner fairs with Hereford and Hereford Angus Cross progeny. ˜ at is a benchmark for our breeding programme”. ˜ e adage that muscle weighs more than fat is very true at Otapawa. “Carcass quality is very important. It is proven that the Hereford is the most e° cient converter of grass. We are always reÿ ning and testing that in our breeding programme,” says Stuart. New genetics are carefully considered before ÿ ltering into the Otapawa stud. Stuart is always researching bloodlines and progeny of any new prospect sire.

BRINGING YOUR BULL HOME
ELGIN ANGUS
Elgin Angus is proud to o° er 27 R2 Angus bulls for sale this year at their 43rd annual on-farm auction in Elsthorpe on Wednesday 10th June at 3.00pm. Stud owner, Sam Duncan is very pleased with how the bulls have presented despite the challenging season. He says, “this is the most even line-up of bulls we’ve had. Elgin always produces easy-doing cattle which are run in one mob and again, this approach has allowed for careful monitoring and appraisal of the bulls. ˜ is in turn has informed the culling process from spring through to now, which has ensured our sale bulls are sound, well-ˆ eshed and of good temperament.” ˜ is year’s line-up of bulls are by four

WAIRARAPA BULL SALES
When you buy a new bull for your herd, you can reduce problems by getting him settled in properly in his new environment. Bulls of all breeds can become upset and excited in the sale and delivery process. ˜ ey are subjected to strange yards, di° erent noises, loss of their mates, di° erent people, di° erent handling methods, trucking, unloading, new paddocks and di° erent water and feed. ˜ is combination can be enough to upset even quiet animals. New bull buyers are o˛ en concerned about the apparent bad temperament of a bull that seemed quiet enough when purchased. Understanding why bulls become upset and reducing these causes of stress allows them to settle down quickly. At auction sales, possession is yours a˛ er the fall of the hammer, so careful treatment of animals from then on is important. Sometimes, the vendors provide insurance against loss in transit, accidental loss of use or infertility. However, insurance is usually the responsibility of the buyer. When you buy a bull, ask what health treatments he has received. Knowing what has been done can reduce any future health treatments. When you use a professional carrier: ˝ Make sure they know which bulls can be mixed together. ˝ Discuss resting procedures for long trips, expected delivery time, truck condition and quiet handling by
