“The annual Bull Sale is months in the making and is an important time of year,” Steve Wilkinson says.

As PGG Wrightson’s Regional Livestock Manager for the Lower North Island, Steve has a unique perspective. He says that PGG Wrightson “provides a full service” as it manages the Bull Sale. The company works with host vendors including with support, advice and marketing plans, organisation and processing the bull sales on the day, and the auctioneers.

“We can also advise on breeding programmes and genetics, if vendors or customers want that,” he says. As livestock specialists,

PGG Wrightson’s business is built around long-term relationships.

“The decisions that people make when buying the bulls affects the long-term direction of their herd.”

As well as the critical commercial aspects of the Bull Sale, there’s also an important social element.

“Farmers get a day off their farm in these tough times, and an opportunity to connect.”

Dandaloo Angus Stud

Dandaloo Angus Stud has over 30 R2 Angus bulls for sale in this year’s auction on-farm, at 902 Admiral Road.

“We are on top of the Maungaraki range in Gladstone and viewing is from 11am on the day,” says Angus Thomson, “or call me on 027 211 8477 for a look at this year’s bulls.

“The catalogue is online at www.dandaloostud or message us to receive a hard copy in the mail. We have a good range of bulls, and the auction will be great buying – you’ll get bang for your buck. The two bulls you particularly want to look at are numbered 2023 and 2057 – they are corkers.”

The auction is on Bidr if you can’t make it in person.

Check out Dandaloo Angus Stud’s Facebook page for information, pictures, and videos leading up to the sale.

 “And come along on the day for refreshments and a social catch up.”

Platform Hereford stud

Platform Hereford stud is owned and operated by Mark and Charmaine Will. Located on their 840ha hill country farm, “Awatahuna”, 27km north east of Masterton at Bideford. The 50 strong herd is run commercially alongside 200 breeding cows and 1800 breeding ewes, while finishing all young stock.

Platform was first formed in 1977 by Ritchie & Elaine Robertson (Charmaine’s parents). The stud was later dispersed in 2010 and Mark & Charmaine reestablished the stud’s name in 2017. “We are very passionate about Herefords and thoroughly enjoy working with them. We are also very fortunate to still have Ritchie’s keen involvement

with the stud, while Mum is always there to babysit the children Stella (6) and Logan (4) when needed.”

The stud’s foundation females came from Duncraigen Stud in Wyndham, Ngakouka Stud in Weber and Panorama Stud in Feilding. Last year 11 in-calf cows were purchased from Glacier Horned Herefords in Fox Glacier, to predominately improve the bone and strength of the herd. “We saw it as a good opportunity to advance our herd genetically by buying cows from such a highly regarded stud” says Charmaine.

Already it has been a success with a noticeable overall improvement in our weaner bulls this year. “We are not planning on becoming a horned Hereford stud but we do believe that the horned blood is essential in developing a high performing herd,” says Charmaine.

Stud sires have come from Maungahina and Maranui. While there are only 10 R2 year

old bulls for sale this year the couple intends to increase this in the future. “We aim to produce 20-25 bulls that are structurally sound, performance recorded and quiet for hill country farmers,” says Mark.

 The 10 bulls for sale this year are sired by

Platform Hereford Stud

Maungahina Checkers and Maungahina Emerald and are for sale via private treaty as well as Bidr online sale on Wednesday 5th June at 7pm. Bulls are carcass scanned, BVD tested and vaccinated. Visitors are welcome any time.

Elgin

Friday 10 May, from 9am. Elgin Angus Bull Sale: Tuesday 11 June, 3pm.

Elgin Angus

Sam and Sarah Duncan, of Elgin Angus Stud, continue to maintain their focus on breeding a consistent and even line of bulls. As the sixth generation of Duncans on the 340-hectare Elsthorpe farm, and the third-generation breeding Angus bulls on the property, the couple is dedicated to enhancing the stud’s performance.

Sam believes Elgin cattle reap the benefits of solid genetics developed over more than 70 years of breeding.

This year at the on-farm auction on 11 June, Elgin Angus offers 26 bulls for sale from the New Zealand record-breaking sire Karahau Olympic Q327, along with Kaharau 610,

Taimate Lazarus, KayJay Steakhouse P261, and Rangatira 592.

Olympic Q327 is co-owned by Elgin Angus and the Thorneycrofts at Wairarapa’s Tapiri Angus. Sam describes Olympic as a big meaty bull with “plenty of depth and softness, who carries himself well.” Having purchased Olympic in 2021, this is the first crop of sires by him that have been offered for sale.

Sam is very impressed with his progeny saying, “the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree. Olympic’s sons are greatbodied bulls and have great temperaments.”

Elgin Angus prides itself on its focused management of its tight-knit herd. This year, approximately 125 cows are calving, and 30 in-calf heifers will be introduced into the herd. The cows graze in the hills, operating on a commercial basis and contributing to pasture management.

Sam believes this type of

operation allows his bull buyers to have confidence that “bulls brought from us will produce cattle which will thrive in any condition – they certainly aren’t pampered.”

He also notes that Elgin Angus’ bulls integrate well with all types of herds, providing easyto-handle and dependable cattle. Elgin Angus guarantees the soundness and fertility of their bulls, with them having

undergone semen testing and structural assessment with Vet Services Hawke’s Bay. The stud stands behind its offerings and their performance.

 Farmers are encouraged to attend the Bull Walk at Elgin Angus on Friday, 10 May from 9am. Additionally, arrangements can be made for viewings at other times by contacting the stud.

Tapiri Angus has 63 years’ experience in breeding e cient, productive, structurally sound Angus cattle with longevity and constitution, resulting in very happy repeat clients. Investing heavily in top New Zealand sires has resulted in an exciting line up of progeny available this year for sale on-farm, just 15 minutes north of Masterton.

“We’re really excited to present our 2024 line up” says Lucy Thorneycroft, who runs the stud in Rangitumau with her husband Rob.

“East Coast genetics have always performed well for us, so we were very pleased to purchase Kaharau Olympic Q327 in 2021, in partnership with Elgin Angus, and setting an on-farm all breeds record price of $106,000. This year

is the rst time his sons have been o ered for sale and there are some real chips o the old block.”

Meaty carcasses, structural soundness and exceptionally quiet temperaments are hallmarks of Tapiri’s line up, with sons of Kaharau Prince P333 and Braveheart of Stern as well as Kaharau Olympic Q327.

KayJay Angus

Facts and gures about the KayJay Stud:

 590ha

 Calving 150 stud cows

 Calving 45 stud heifers

 Lambing 2000 ewes

 Lambing 500 hoggets

 All lambs and cattle nished on farm.

“Here at KayJay we are a breeding program that pushes the boundaries when it comes to performance and production while maintaining the functional, e cient package that the traditional Angus cattle beast is best known for,” says Roddy Kjestrup.

“Like many, the KayJay Stud has never been fortunate enough to have genuine scale in terms of farm size. Therefore, cattle and sheep have had to perform at every age and stage to make the business viable. This

is where the boundaries get pushed and we learn what can be achieved when trying to add as much value into a carcass while still maintaining the core fundamentals of a functional animal.

“Over the years we have seen the demand for KayJay genetics explode and we now have bulls traveling nationwide. With the goal to be a well-known and reputable source of genetics in the market, we are pleased to see this coming to fruition with KayJay bred weaners in hot demand around the country. Here in the Wairarapa the top line of Angus steers are again KayJay genetics with Andy and Bridget Mathewson’s ever strong line fetching $1,230.

“This year’s sale is another strong team of bulls with consistency and depth from Lot 1 through to 45 and some real stars coming through.

“KayJay is also becoming known for the festivities during and following our bull sale with a large crowd enjoying

refreshments, a live band, and the shuttle to and from town.”

Rauriki Charolais: power, pedigree, performance

Rauriki Charolais, owned and operated by the Collin family in Waipukurau since 2003, specialises in breeding Charolais bulls.

Previously, Simon and Wendy Collin bred Romagnola cattle for about 12 years.

“This year, we’re putting up a group of bulls we’re excited with,” Simon says. “The new sire is Rauriki Ransom R51, which we used in the 2021 breeding programme and then sold in the 2022 Rauriki Charolais bull sale.”

They’ve also invested in genetics from Canada, America, Australia and around New Zealand. The North American genetics o er some outcross pedigrees along with added performance in lower birth weight, growth, and carcass gures.

Some of Rauriki’s

Why did the Collin family decide to focus on Charolais bulls? “The Angus and Hereford markets were saturated with

breeders, in the early 2000’s and Charolais held the greatest potential,” Simon says. “Charolais is the pick of the exotics, in my opinion. They have extra yield and growth, cross well with traditional cattle, and have extra marketing potential because they can either take a lot of weight or they can be killed early.”

Breeding Charolais for more than 20 years, Simon says the Rauriki Stud is developing all the time. “These bulls are hardy; they’re not living in an easy environment. They also perform and are functionable. They add value to the buyer’s nishing programme.”

The family has developed its breeding strategy to respond to the market, including breeding up red Charolais from a Hereford-Charolais breeding programme and the more traditional cream and white bulls.

Rauriki predominantly breeds bulls for the beef industry, but there are an increasing number

of enquiries from the dairying industry.

“Here at Rauriki we look to maintain the traditional Charolais strength of growth, but also breed cattle of medium frame with softness while maintain muscle de nition. Structural and fertility soundness is something we are particular about, along with a quiet temperament.”

Simon says that, at this year’s weaner cattle fairs, people are seeing the potential value proposition of Charolaiscross cattle for their nishing programme.

Otapawa Poll Herefords

Investing in quality genetics is just as important in the tough times as it is in the good, and just like any investment, you want to ensure its success, and its ability to pay dividends down the track.

Stuart Robbie, from Otapawa Poll Hereford Stud, says that when you invest in Otapawa genetics, you get to take advantage of half a century of performance beef breeding. You also get a programme with integrity and an industryleading support system.

“When things are tight, it’s crucial to make the right decisions for your operation.

Using an Otapawa bull, over any breed of cow, is one of the fastest proven ways to improve farm-gate profits while maintaining peace of mind with a full breakdown guarantee and

unparalleled back-up service for any of our clientele,” Stuart says.

Otapawa understands the needs and demands of its clients, running 26,000 stock units themselves in the rugged foothills under the Puketoi Range.

The bulls are solely grassfed from birth to 600-day weighing. No crops, no break feeding, no yard weaning.

Everything is treated the same here, and nothing is spoon-fed, allowing for an honest view of how the breeding selections from the stud Hereford herd impacts the quality of the commercial herd.

Stuart says that “longevity, maternal ability, and carcass quality are key profit drivers for beef farmers, and we are consistently testing and refining those factors in our breeding system.

It’s great to see our bulls out in the field at the age of 10 years, still providing top quality progeny.”

“Good cattle are fed, but great ones are bred, and we are commited to developing genetics that can go into any herd, in any part of the country, and boost the carcass quality and yield, while enhancing overall herd efficiency”, adds James Robbie, Stuart’s son and the fifth generation to work on the windswept farm.

“Breeding, identifying, and selecting genetics in the rugged hill-country environment we have here, allows us to produce animals that will thrive and perform in any corner of not only New Zealand, but the world.”

“There are good reasons why our forebears utilised

cross breeding for optimum profitability,” says Stuart.

“We’ve observed that a commercial Angus herd can expect to achieve a 12 percent increase in weaning weights simply by using a Hereford Bull.” Progeny sired by an Otapawa Hereford will benefit from multiple ongoing advantages,

ANIMAL GENETICS - WORK WITH NATURE AND BLEND WITH SCIENCE

QUALITY

Breeding meaty homozygous polled bulls with good constitution and excellent temperament, Mark Eagle and son Anthony, are proud of the 20 or so bulls they have on o er in this year’s bull sale. The heaviest is over 900 kg.

“We’re producing cattle that are easy calving, with a high growth rate, a good carcass, and excellent natures.”

Mark has farming in his blood, growing up on a dairy farm, then buying a sheep and cattle farm and becoming interested in di erent breeds of cattle. In 2006, he bought a few stud cows.

When renowned breeders Stu and Gail Bradley began downsizing their Westham Stud, he was able to buy lots

of progeny. To broaden the gene pool, the Stud has imported semen from the UK and Australia. Kaimoa South Devons has the biggest selection of polled South Devons in New Zealand.

“The fantastic thing about Ngakouka Herefords is that our cow herd is commercially run,” says Bruce Donald.

“We have the cows chase the ewes from weaning till calving. In summer, cows and calves are with the ewes for more grazing pressure on pastures, keeping the feed quality in the best shape for the best growth rate and performance of stock.”

Bruce and his wife Chrissina say their bulls are run in one mob from weaning in early February until their 400-day weights are recorded. The dairy bulls are then sold, and the 2-year sale mob begins. Grazed on the hills and the ats, their bulls are solely fed on pasture and never on farm-fed crops, whether summer or winter.

“We pride ourselves on this and have full con dence in our genetics to perform in all cow herds and environments. There are no free lunches in our operation and that’s what makes

the rest. They go out to new properties and perform.”

Hinewaka Shorthorns Bull Sale: Wednesday 5 June , 3pm.

Hinewaka Shorthorns

Hinewaka Stud is a sixth-generation farm that has been breeding shorthorns for over 150 years. It occupies a highly valued niche in the market.

Shorthorns are an integral part of the farming operation and an important part of the Hinewaka business.

Mitch Blackwood says that Hinewaka’s philosophy and aim is to produce bulls for commercial farmers that are suited to hill country properties like theirs – they’ll add value to the clients’ bottom line.

“We want thick, easy doing cattle, that are sound, with a quiet temperament and backed with plenty of performance.”

Shorthorns are renowned for having very good IMF (intramuscular fat). The ability of shorthorns to marble is second only to Wagyu and, together with their quiet

temperament (which leads to lower Ph in the meat), shorthorn meat cuts are at the premium end of the scale. With premiums now available from some meat companies there is a huge opportunity for farmers to add real value to their cattle operations.

Two new Canadian bullsMuridale Phantom 10F and Fraser’s Dr Pepper 132D - have sired many of the bulls the Stud is selling this year. These two sires have left tremendous depth and thickness.

“We are sourcing the majority of our genetics from Australia and a little bit from Canada,” Mitch says.

Last year Hinewaka secured the NZ semen rights in Sprys Down Under S77 - the top priced bull at Sprys sale in March 2023, selling for $70,000.

“We will have our first calves on the ground sired by Sprys Down Under S77 this Spring and we’re excited to see his progeny.”

Mitch is enjoying the Stud’s capacity to meet the market right now. He’s locking in the best sires to add into the mix, with an eye to future expansion. At Hinewaka, all bulls are semen service tested and guaranteed fertile at the time of sale. The bulls have all tested negative for, and vaccinated against, BVD.

 Catalogues will be out in the middle of May. Photos and videos of the bulls will also be on Hinewaka’s Facebook page. If you would like further information on Hinewaka’s breeding programme or sale lots, contact Mitch Blackwood.

The McFadzean Cattle Company

Johnie & Laura McFadzean plan to have just under 100 bulls in the sale this year.

The Wairarapa based McFadzean family is wellrecognised as a leading producer of weaner cattle and yearling bulls.

The previous few years of bull sales have been highly successful for the McFadzean Cattle Company. It’s priority of investing in top genetics without compromising constitution is paying off.

After four successful sales of Meat Maker and Super Angus bulls, the McFadzean’s purchased a specialist low birthweight short gestation registered Angus cow herd producing McFadzean Cruizy Calve Angus Bulls.

“This year we will have 50 Cruizy Calve bulls plus 40 MeatMaker and Super Angus up for auction on 13 September.

Over the years the McFadzean family has grown its cow herd from 40 to a consistent 1,500 strong herd.

“The focus has been on having a sustainable and high performing cow herd. We expect our cows to wean a calf in excess of 50 percent of her body weight for heifer calves and in excess of 58 percent for a bull calf, year on year and regardless of the season.

“Our focus is on performance under hill country commercial farming conditions We have a very harsh selection criteria for bulls. If they don’t meet our criteria, we won’t sell them. We select based on type, constitution, temperament, and cow quality.”

After six years of official operation the McFadzean’s have been thrilled with the results for their clients.

Testimonial from clients Wendy and Dean Lupton: “We weighed our spring weaners in February.” The steers averaged 329kg and heifers 308kg and we’ve basically jumped 100kg per animal using McFadzean genetics.”

The Lupton’s’ achieved $1,200 for their steers and $1,090 for heifers topping the sale at Te Kuiti weaner fair for both steers and heifers.

Johnie says, “Results like those achieved by the Luptons are just awesome. We’re so happy the bulls are having an instant impact to our client’s bottom line.”

Koanui Polled Hereford’s: a good day out

“The Koanui Stud has one of the largest Hereford herds in the country,” Chris Chesterman says. “We’ve selected only the 55 top bulls for 2024’s Bull Sale. On the day of the sale, but at any other time too, the selection available to customers is enormous.”

Chris and his wife Jennifer are the second generation to breed Polled Herefords at the Koanui Stud, following in the footsteps of Chris’s parents, Annette and Fred Chesterman. They established the Stud in 1972 in the Maraetotata Valley, south-east of Havelock North. Since then, land holdings have expanded to include land in the Manawatu and Wairarapa,

providing climatic diversity and assisting the Stud to cope with adverse weather events.

Chris says that Koanui’s point of di erence is the strength of its cow herd and the farm’s stringent appraisal of bulls that are up for sale. From its inception, Koanui has had a strong commercial focus. And because of the number of cows run at Koanui, there are numerous genetic programmes being progressed within a single herd.

“We have a signi cant amount of data on genetics and performance and can analyse it with a large degree of accuracy. Check out the Koanui catalogue containing all the genetic information you might need. We will upload it online.”

Whether customers want to come along on the Open Day, the day of the Bull Sale itself, and/or arrange a private viewing, Chris says he is keen

to talk to clients to nd out what they’re looking for. He can provide advice on what might suit their budget, their criteria, and their endeavours.

“The key thing on the day of the Bull Sale, is for farmers to get together for a collegial and social day,” he says. “I hope people can catch up with

others and enjoy the solidarity that such an event can provide. It’s a tough and demanding time in farming, and we all need to do more to take the pressure o .”

 To arrange a viewing or to nd out more about the open day, call Chris or Jennifer.

“We are extremely proud of this year’s bulls, which build on 117 years of breeding,” says Mark McKenzie, fifth generation Stud owner.

This year’s sale includes 35 Polled Herefords and 12 Speckle Parks. Mark says the exciting Hereford sires coming through are “built for the beef industry with constitution, added muscle, and IMF.”

Several of these bulls come from two renowned sires: NJW Endure and Hollyfield. Endure is a leader in his field for EMA and IMF carcass traits. The progeny from Hollyfield have outstanding carcass and EMA, and “are the most consistent line of bulls we’ve had in the Herefords for a while.”

With regards to Speckled Park bulls, Mark says “we’ve concentrated on meat quality with this breed, as reflected in the number of high-quality butchers and the 37 top end restaurants across New Zealand that can’t get enough of our meat.”

Alistair and Eileen McWilliam offer a strong and consistent line-up of Poll Hereford bulls bred for commercial cattlemen and the beef industry for sale on-farm in Gladstone on Wednesday 29 May.

“Our programme continues to focus on breeding bulls that will produce fastgrowing steers and profitable, quality replacement heifers for our hill country clients.

“After two record-breaking wet, muddy, winters that tested both man and beast, the tap turned off in January and we are still waiting for drought-breaking rain. It is heartening to see how well our cattle and sheep have performed and

the benefits of decades of breeding for performance under pressure.

“Te Taumata bulls are working throughout the country and are fully guaranteed. We enjoy sharing our passion for Herefords and the beef industry.”

Mt Mable Angus: a legacy of excellence

In 1967, Mt Mable Angus was established with a clear vision of breeding sound, functional, and kindnatured cattle with carcass quality at the forefront.

Over the years, this has been achieved by careful selection of herd sires and through retaining only those cows that excel in performance, soundness, temperament, and genetic potential.

Mt Mable Angus has used a variety of sires to improve the herd’s genetics. One such example is Cricklewood Pandemic P056, a grandson of Mt Mable Fat Boy 373, who was acquired in 2020 for $92,000 in partnership with Kenhardt Angus.

Cricklewood Pandemic P056’s first bulls entered the sale ring in 2022 as yearlings and fetched

top prices of $8,200 and $8,400 respectively. In 2023, his twoyear-old sons were offered for sale, with Mt Mable Best Boy 2128 selling to the Herrick family for an impressive sale topping $21,000. Another son was sold to long-time Taihape buyers for $17,000.

In recent years, there has also been exceptional success with homebred bulls. A particular standout is Mt Mable Intrigue 1790, whose sons will again be available for sale in 2024. With exceptional type and genetic potential, Intrigue’s offspring have consistently fetched good prices at auctions, with one bull selling for $16,000 and two others selling for $11,000 and $11,500 in 2023.

Joining the bulls sired by Pandemic and Intrigue in the 2024 sale line up will be quality sons of Mt Mable Dazzling 1705, a calving ease specialist, and Rangatira Charlie 20-910, bought as a calf from the Rangatira Angus dispersal sale

for $17,500 in 2021.

Mt Mable Angus takes pride in its legacy of excellence and commitment to breeding top-quality cattle. With a focus on sound genetics, superior performance, and outstanding temperament, their bulls are sought after by discerning, often long-term buyers, who value quality and reliability.

The Friel’s, owners of Mt Marble, remain dedicated to upholding the high standards that have defined Mt Mable Angus for over five decades.
