Welcome WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB PRESIDENT

WAYNE THURSTON

January is always an exciting time for us heading in to a new year with a fresh sense of enthusiasm. We start the year off with the first of our Interislander Summer Racing Festivals on January 2. Hot on its heels is the Wairarapa Country Music Festival at Tauherenikau January 11 to 13.

takes place every year but help us improve on it too. Particularly Trust House – our major sponsor. Also the local community is incredible the way it gets in behind this event and makes our visitors who have come from all over New Zealand in their campervans feel welcome.

The festival is fast becoming a firm favourite on the calendar for country music enthusiasts – or just music lovers in general. This year’s headline act is Bevan Gardiner appearing on Saturday night along with Marian Burns and other supporting acts.

For those of you who are from out of town, we hope you enjoy the rest of Wairarapa and everything it has to offer from wineries, cafes and shops, to beaches and landscapes, while you are here.

We are very grateful to our wonderful supporters who ensure this event not only

The line-up this year is very exciting. Everyone will have an incredible time. Enjoy!

Bevan Gardiner & James Davy DYNAMIC DUO TAKE TO THE STAGE

Tauherenikau Racing and Event Centre and Kidnappers Country Music are thrilled to have award-winning Bevin Gardiner and James Davy headlining the Saturday Night Spectacular Showcase.

guitar since age 12 and has focused on jazz, classical and rock. The pair began playing in the garage and are now a well-known hot commodity in the country music scene.

Bevan is best known for his success as a John Denver tribute artist. Bevan sings, plays guitar, and the drums. On Saturday night, he and James Davy will light up the stage with some of John Denver’s classics, plus lots of great classic country music. “We’ll aim to get everyone up and dancing,” says Bevan.

James studied at Christchurch Jazz School for two years, and later finished a degree and a post graduate qualification in music at Otago University. He was a freelance musician in Auckland for 10 years and has played alongside the likes of Susan Prentice, Garry Morris, Craig Adams and many more.

Bevan and James are both based in Dunedin. Bevan provides one-onone musical tuition and also plays in another duo, does drums for two other bands and plays guitar for yet another. While country music is his nostalgic ‘home’, he enjoys and works with many different musical genres from pop and rock, to soul. “Country music is what I was brought up on, and definitely feels like home to me. But I love all sorts of different music. I like to mix it up,” says Bevan. Bevan was introduced to James, while completing a Degree in Music at Otago University, through a colleague. The pair found, not only did they have a love of country music in common, but plenty else too. “We met about 10 years ago and really clicked musically speaking, but we also had a lot in common too,” says Bevan. “We’ve been friends ever since.”

Bevan Gardiner

Bevan has been playing the guitar since age 6, began singing at age 10, and picked up the drums at age 18. He was super impressed with James’ guitar skills and both jumped at the opportunity to play together. James has been playing

Both Bevan and James enjoy living in Dunedin and raising their families there. Bevan says his four-year-old son, Lucas, is showing some early signs of enjoying music and the limelight when he has the chance to attend a gig with his Dad. “He loves coming out on stage with me occasionally and shows some natural talent,” says Bevan. But he is quick to add that Lucas can pursue whichever dream he ultimately chooses. Ava is just 9 months old, so it’s still a little early to tell as yet. Bevan and James have only ever driven through Wairarapa, so are really looking forward to playing at the festival on Saturday night, and getting to see a bit more of what the region has to offer. “We are really looking forward to it,” says Bevan. “It’s great to do something new and play somewhere different. See a different town, meet a different audience. We can’t wait.”

Marian Burns A BURST OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY

Marian is a burst of contagious energy on the stage. Marian is most definitely an act not to be missed. Describing herself as “fiddling her way across the world at 100 miles an hour” she has played virtually everywhere in the world and collected many awards along the way. Some of her most exciting places to perform have been atop the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Canyon, Blarney Castle and the Grand Ole Opry. So it’s quite the coup, that she is playing here at the Tauherenikau Racecourse this month! Marian got her first violin for Christmas, aged six, but she remembers beating a pot in time to music as young as age four. She was first inspired to be in a band while watching the band play at her Mother’s second wedding. Later, her sister stirred her love for the guitar, and her first opportunity to buy one came with a purchase of her first guitar from Farmers thanks to her Dad. While watching her sister, Karen Davy, perform in the Auckland Country Music Awards, she became fascinated by the trophies and learned about an “awesome” fiddler in a country band called Cath Newhook, who was part of a country band and played (or “rocked”, to use Marian’s word) an electric fiddle. Marian was so inspired, she worked hard to get herself an electric fiddle and learn a classic ‘bluegrass’ anthem ‘The Orange Blossom Special’ by Irwin Rouse, and entered – and won – the Best Country Instrumental award. Not only that, but “blow me down”, says Marian, she also won the overall award that year. A brand new career began to blossom for Marian and there was no looking back. Awards and accolades flowed beginning

WAIRARAPA COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2019

with the New Zealand Country Music Entertainer of the Year, through various finalists, public vote winners, ‘Bennie Award’ winner, Best CD by a Solo Fiddler, Best Fiddler as a Solo Artist, Lifetime Achievement Award, a ‘Gong’ and culminating in her most recent and most prestigious honour, becoming a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for Services to Music. Marian says she lives and breathes her music which is “running through her veins” since she first picked up that violin at age six. During her incredible career she has played with the likes of the “Highway of Legends”, and shared the stage with Ricky Skaggs, Dr. John, Beccy Cole and The Topp Twins. Her album, ‘The Paris Sessions’, was recorded in France with renowned producer Jean Alain Roussel (who also produces work for international stars such as Sting and Cat Stevens). This was also the album that won her the ‘Best Album by Fiddler as a Soloist’. Marian is known for her unbounded energy that she credits her audience for, saying “an energy burst happens between myself and the audience” that “flies around the room, bouncing off the walls, coming back to me and then it’s all on”. She calls that “awesome vibe” a beautiful thing to be part of. Marian is looking forward to giving the audience at the festival a taste of that vibe on Friday and Saturday night, when they will be treated to one “footstomping, hand-clapping musical ride” with her infamous and electric live performances.

Joy Adams Joy Adams is a Waikato-based entertainer known to many country music lovers around New Zealand. Not only is Joy a brilliant singer, but she also writes her own songs. She even manages to mix comedy into her act – yet another string to her bow.

As well as New Zealand, Joy’s music is played throughout Europe, the USA and Australia. While she is well known among country music fans, she has also featured in mainstream independent artist charts, including her song “I Know You Don’t Love Me No More”, which went straight to the top of the European Media Services Charts in the United Kingdom in 2001.

A regular on the country music circuit in New Zealand, Australia and beyond, Joy has won many awards over the years, including New Zealand Country Music Association Songwriter of the Year and National Female Country Artist of the Year.

Joy has recorded with Grand Ole Opry star Ernie Ashworth, Dewayne Orender, John Grenell, Graeme McCardle and, while in Nashville, she met and recorded a duet with her idol, Kenny Dale.

You can find Joy playing at the likes of the Country Music Awards (as a contestant or a guest artist), various showcases, jamborees, festivals and fundraisers throughout New Zealand, Norfolk Island, and Australia. She has also travelled to places such as Germany, Denmark and Norway to share her passion for music. The 18 albums Joy has released since the early 1990s include a mix of classic country, easy listening, comedy, and,

Joy is described as having a “natural flair for song writing and the rare ability to write and perform songs that can touch your heart, make you laugh or cry – or leave you feeling really good about yourself”. That’s quite a talent. of course, some of her award-winning original songs. Those 18 albums have culminated in Joy’s latest album, ‘Finale’.

So, it is incredibly exciting to have Joy playing at the Wairarapa Country Music Festival on Friday and Saturday nights.

Shayne Harvey Country rocker Shayne Harvey was born in Paeroa and raised in Putaruru and Paengaroa in Bay of Plenty. “I have always worked and lived in rural areas, so that’s where my country roots come from, but I never picked up a guitar until I was 21. “Most of my adult life was spent living and working in Raetihi where I first got hoodwinked into performing and since then I’ve been doing it on a regular basis. This beautiful refurbished Hotel and Restaurant is a peaceful, relaxing place. Either outdoor in the garden bar or inside in the dining room, this is a great place to sit and unwind. “I’ve been lucky enough to have plenty of good mentors in the music world, such as Gary Lucre, Wayne Tamati and Bruce Parr, who encouraged me to get up and perform.” Shayne will bring a taste of contemporary rock to the festival, Garth Brookes and Clint Black being among his favourite country artists, along with classic country artists like Hank Williams.

Keeping it Country Husband and wife team, Sandy and Wayne Tapson, are the personalities behind Kidnappers Country Music who have been “Keeping it Country”, running the Country Music Festivals over the past 20 years. So this festival, their 20th anniversary, is particularly special for them. “We look at each other and ask ‘Where have the past 20 years gone?’” laughs Wayne. Sandy adds that “Each festival feels like the first”. This festival will be the seventh to be held in Wairarapa, the fourth at Tauherenikau Racing and Event Centre. Previously, the festivals had been held at the Clareville Showgrounds. “We are really excited to welcome everyone to this year’s festival. We want to say a big hello to all our friends – old and new. It’s going to be great to catch up with everyone again,” says Wayne. The pairing of Kidnappers Country Music and Tauherenikau Racing and Events is the perfect combination to take the festival to the next level, with the dynamic partnership building on previous successes and learning what the festivalgoers like. “Sandy and I would like to say a big thank you for the partnership that we have with the Wairarapa Racing Club for the past four years which allowed us to work together as a team. We look forward to many more,” says Wayne. As well as the support of Tauherenikau, many others come together, to make this festival happen. Wayne says that the festival couldn’t take place without all the support from the Musicians, Artists, Singers and Guest Artists, through to the ground staff, kitchen staff and event crew. “I really want to thank all our supporters. Everyone is amazing and we are incredibly

thankful to them for their continued support over the years,” says Wayne. “A big thank you must go out to Garry and Glenis, our soundman and his partner who have been with us for 17 years”. Wayne also acknowledges the sad passing of their ‘on the job sparky’, Tom Corby to cancer. “Tom had been a supporter of Kidnappers from the very first festival and a close friend for over 25 years. He will be sadly missed out on the field, or up a ladder, by everyone”. “We know many of you have attended many festivals, if not all! And we hope that this one will be just as much fun – if not more. Have a great time”.

Sister Twinset Barbara Manning and Anne Scott are the two sisters who make up ‘Twinset’ - one of the highlights on the Country Music Festival programme. The pair grew up in South Waikato, and music was always a significant part of their life. They attended the South Waikato Country Music Club and learned about musicianship and stagecraft from Jack Riggir (father of well-known entertainer, Patsy Riggir).

Developing harmonies as teenagers, they formed various groups and performed as a duo, for awards and shows. They were backing vocalists for several awards shows, including Entertainer of the Year, and have performed with many well known entertainers such as Patsy Riggir, Susan Raye, the late Graeme McCardle and Noel Parlane. Twinset also provided backing vocals for Joy Adams’ (also performing at the Country Music Festival) very first album, ‘Come Home Baby Darling’. Barbara was also performed the backing vocals for a Donna Saunders album. Barbara and Anne love performing on the country music festival circuit and enjoy the friendship of the country music community.

Cotton Candy At the age of three and four respectively, Terina and Ngarangi started singing at country music clubs in the lower North Island, competing in awards around New Zealand, now performing as guest artists at large public events. Fifteen-year-old Ngarangi enjoys listening to a wide range of country and contemporary music, such as Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Tanya Tucker and Dolly Parton. Fourteen-year-old Terina enjoys the challenge of more upbeat songs, both playing and singing. Both started playing the guitar at eight years old with Terina adding further instruments since then.

Jocelyn & George Tauhine This pair met only four years ago at a local Country Music Club but look like they’ve been playing together for decades. Jocelyn’s parents bought her a guitar at age 16 and George has 35 years experience in the entertainment business. Both have a deep passion for country music that is evident on the stage. Jocelyn first found out just how talented she was when she entered a talent quest in 1988 and, “to her surprise”, won. She went on to place third in the National Western Music Awards the following year. Soon after that she learnt to yodel and achieved another third place in the yodelling section of the awards. In 2010 she won the ‘top gong’ and first place. Jocelyn’s first band was ‘The Westerners’, and her next was ‘The Mountain Ramblers’ in 1992. Today, her band is called ‘Mainstream’. Sadly Jocelyn was in the middle of making a CD with her husband, Lennie, when he passed away. She went on to finish that CD that included many of Lennie’s songs with the help of steel player Mr Joe Martin. George’s first guitar was a Tex Morton and he was already strumming at age 5. He

played in bands in Hawke’s Bay until he joined the army in 1963. However, even being in the army didn’t stop him. While in Singapore, George continued to sing and play as part of a band. He returned home in 1970 and picked up his career as an entertainer again. George has also won many awards over the years

and together, Jocelyn and George have continued to enter awards together and attend the country music festival circuit as guest artists. Jocelyn has three children and five grandchildren and George also has three children and two grandchildren who keep them busy when they’re not playing music.
