WELCOME Wairarapa Racing Club President GARRICK EMMS
On behalf of the Wairarapa Racing Club it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Tauherenikau for the Wairarapa Country Music Festival. We’re looking forward to delivering a fantastic country experience. Thank you to our supporters, particularly our major sponsor Trust House, which helps us make this a memorable event. Thanks also to the local community who get behind us and make our visitors feel welcome. Tauherenikau will also host the prestigious classic
cars of Cruise Martinborough on Saturday afternoon. It will be a great opportunity to inspect some serious horsepower around the racetrack. Talking of horsepower, the Waitangi Day race meeting is on Monday 8 February 2021. Get your family and friends together, pack a picnic or sample our range of food trucks. After a major upgrade of the camping facilities, we now offer a certified campground for motorhome owners and those wishing to camp in a tent. We are extremely proud of the new updated facilities.

ARTIST Eddie Low The 2021 festival is proud to welcome New Zealand’s country music superstar Eddie Low. Winner of the ‘Country Music Legend’ award in 2009, Eddie is renowned for his effortless vocals, beautiful ballads, and talent as a multi-instrumentalist. The term ‘Legend’ truly applies to Eddie. He epitomises all that is country music in New Zealand. Born blind in Rotorua, he spent much of his childhood at the Institute for the Blind in Auckland. While there he developed his natural musical talent, becoming a member of the Institute Band and winning several talent quests. When Eddie was 12, he underwent a series of operations which gained him partial sight in his left eye. For a brief time in the early sixties Eddie joined the Sundowners. He was also a member of the Truetones before moving on to become a member of the Quin Tikis showband. This showband toured as part of the annual Miss New Zealand extravaganza and with Joe Brown’s Country and Western Stage Show. When Eddie signed as a solo act to Joe Brown’s label in 1970, the canny impresarios billed
Eddie the ‘voice in a million’ – a gorgeous instrument, resonant and honeyed. Eddie performed in Nashville several times in the 1970s. He went on to tour in the US and Canada and in the late 70s moved to Sydney to live. Returning to New Zealand, he settled in Christchurch, his wife’s hometown.
Low’s services to music were acknowledged in 2006 when he was made a member of the Order of Merit. He enjoyed the ‘Highway of Legends’ tour with Gray Bartlett, Brendan Dugan and John (Hore) Grenell in 2008. Eddie continues to record and tour and is looking forward to the Tauherenikau festival.

Wairarapa Country Music Festival 2021
ARTIST Jodi Vaughan Legendary NZ songstress Jodi Vaughan will be headlining the 2021 Wairarapa Country Music Festival. An icon of the Kiwi country music scene, with a singing career of over 30 years, she will also be debuting a new project at the festival (see details elsewhere), so keep your eyes peeled, and ears open, to witness some history in the making. Jodi Vaughan is Australian by birth, and her just released latest single entitled ‘Aussie Proud’ reflects her birth country. Having carved out a career as one of New Zealand’s best known and most loved country music artists, she has also made a name for herself in Australia.
With her Kiwi husband she came to New Zealand in 1975 and her talented voice and stage energy was immediately recognised. Auckland guitarist, Gray Bartlett saw her performances and with his duo partner, Brendan Dugan, they invited her to join their act. These days Jodi is based in Hamilton and tours regularly. She attended the Tamworth Country Music Festival for the first time in 2020 bringing with her a tour of NZ Country Music fans. Describing herself as a ‘cup half full kind a gal’, Jodi says
“I don’t have dreams. My dreams are realities that just haven’t happened yet”.
Her first Australian single release ‘It Ain’t Always Love’ peaked at #14 on the Australian National Airplay Chart & #19 on The Official Tasmanian Country Music Chart, making it a top 20 hit! Her rise in the music industry was not plain sailing in the early years. Split from her siblings at an early age when their parents split, she learned the value and comfort of music when in foster care.

ARTIST Ainslie Allen
which made her a household name.
Returning after a great reception at the Tauherenikau festival in 2020, Ainslie Allen will be performing tracks from her soon-to-be released album, ‘Betty’, as well as crowd favourites.
Her first paid singing engagement was at 16 when she performed before Sir Edmund Hillary. Since then, she has etched out an amazing career as an independent country music artist. Ainslie has entertained New Zealand and Australian troops in East Timor with comedian Mike King and regularly makes appearances at sporting events, singing the National Anthem for the All Blacks, Silver Ferns, South Africa’s Springbok, the Wallabies, and French rugby teams.
She was named ‘Country Entertainer of the Year’ in 2018. ‘Done and Gone’ is her latest single – it is the quintessential ‘boy does girl bad’ country rock tune written by Ainslie. Produced and mixed by Ben Edwards, and recorded at ‘The Sitting Room’, in Lyttelton, Christchurch, Ainslie says she wanted to write a tune with elements of rock, to represent women who are not afraid to own their past, to tell it how it is, and who are willing to wait for what they truly deserve. Ainslie is no stranger to the entertainment world. She wrote her first song
at eight, won her first guitar at age 12 and at 15, she starred in McDonald’s ‘Young Entertainers’ a hit New Zealand TV talent show,
Katie Thompson
lead single, Alcohol And Pills, numerous fallen music heroes.
Musician Katie Thompson has been honing her craft for many years and her music is described as ‘Kiwi roots, pop and country all rolled into one.’ It is her debut at Tauherenikau. Hailing from Hokitika, (she is fiercely proud to be called as ‘West Coaster’), Katie is now based in Christchurch and has three full-length studio albums under her belt, ‘Tall Poppy’ (2009); ‘Impossible’ (2011) and ‘Bittersweet’ (2019), the last seeing her nominated for two Tuis at the New Zealand Country Music Awards in 2020. The album was recorded with award-winning producer Ben Edwards at his studio ‘The Sitting Room’ in Lyttelton. The title ‘Bittersweet’ encapsulates Katie’s ongoing journey of being a performer and a mother, alongside the many challenges that life’s journey has provided friends, family – and in the case of the album’s
06
She toured Hawaii with John Rowles and Elvis Presley’s TCB band. Fresh from Rhythm & Vines in Gisborne and the Marton Country Music Festival, Ainslie brings her stories and original songs to the festival at Tauherenikau.
Katie channels the timeless fragility of folk, while embodying the visceral energy of Americana, country, rock, and blues influences. She performs at her absolute best live, in front of an energised crowd. There’s a challenge Tauherenikau crowds! Katie connects with the audience through the intimacy of her storytelling, as well as with her elegant, understated arrangements that can be tastefully bare, or richly uplifting, depending on the mood of the song.

ARTIST ALY COOK Famous across Australasia for her dedication to the arts, Aly Cook will be joining the festival line-up performing her hit songs from her ARIA (Australian) and NZ Official Album charting album ‘Caught in the Middle’. Her lead out single from this album ‘Red Dirt Road Trip’ has had #1 placements on both the Australian Airplay Chart and the Tasmanian independent Country Airplay Chart and three subsequent single top 20 Australian airplay hits. In the past decade, Aly has performed around the world winning hearts wherever she sings. She is based in Nelson, New Zealand, but has a strong footprint also in Australia. While touring the Kimberley region,
her passion for ancient lands urged her to write ‘Kimberley’, which was eventually used in a TV promotion of the area. Her similar love of her homeland, New Zealand, has had her twice being a finalist in the NEXT magazine Women of the Year awards for her contribution to the arts. Aly’s sound is an eclectic mix of Country; Blues; Folk and ‘rootsy’ songs, a hint of Celtic, rich in harmonies and addictive choruses. Described by one reviewer Graham Reid, “Her voice is veracious and poignant. A skilled songwriter, she makes music worth a listen, and returning to again and again.”

ARTIST Wayne R. Heath A ‘Grandaddy of Country’ Wayne R. Heath will be playing his ‘Nashville to New Zealand’ show that celebrates his more than half a century in show business. Wayne has been a country music singer/entertainer/ promoter in New Zealand, Australia, and the United States. Born in Invercargill, growing up in Auckland, he now lives with his wife of 47 years, Marie in Masterton. At just 15, he won a major radio talent quest and was instantly signed by Auckland agents, including Hegan Entertainments, Benny Levin Promotions, Mary Throll Entertainments and Fullers Entertainment Agency. Wayne’s heroes were country radio artists like Hank Williams, Hank Snow, and he even
became adept at yodelling. Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan were also his favourites. Wayne has been awarded for his music achievements including a Silver Scroll and has found himself in the company of some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry both in New Zealand and overseas. Wayne and his wife have owned and operated a string of businesses in New Zealand and Australia. These included motels, two nightclubs and a hotel. They were senior partners in a Gold Coast Property Development Company and owned and operated on Australia’s Gold Coast, Jupiter Limousine Services Ltd. Somehow, he managed to fit in community volunteer work, being a valued member of the Queensland State Emergency Services (S.E.S.). Today, Wayne sits at the very forefront of New Zealand entertainers and is a regular live performer. His act has become extremely popular with its comedy and continuous dancing and singing. His unique voice performs all the major hits. Seems for Wayne R. Heath the road does go on forever.

HISTORY
Work began on the Tauherenikau Racecourse in 1866 and was completed in 1874, with the first meeting being held at Tauherenikau on 26 & 27 January 1874. The first buildings were erected in 1892 with the building of a grandstand (left), weighing room, stewards’ room, four boxes and eight stalls. A larger grandstand was quickly needed. This photo was taken at summer races in 1905.
Tauherenikau Racecourse - in the beginning Almost to the day, 147 years ago, the Wairarapa Racing Club held its first race meeting at Tauherenikau, (26 January 1874), north of Featherston in Wairarapa. The buildings and facilities were basic, the trees were small and the Remutaka Road was but a bullock track, but there was a great air of anticipation and excitement which continues today, whenever an event is held at this picturesque site. Next weekend, it’s not the thunder of horses’ hooves but the

energetic and addictive beat of Country Music, which will fill the air at Tauherenikau. From Friday 29 – Sunday 31 January 2021, the Wairarapa Racing Club opens the venue to the Wairarapa Country Music Festival. Firmly entrenched on the music calendar, the festival is recognised as a weekend full of fun and entertainment for the whole family. The 2021 festival will be one of the biggest events of its kind yet with an epic line-up of Kiwi talent. Work began on the Tauherenikau Racecourse way back in 1866 and it was in 1874 that the Wairarapa Racing Club adopted it as its home. For decades, especially at New Year, and Easter, the

WEDDINGS TEA HOUSE TRANSFORMED INTO GORGEOUS WEDDING VENUE Rose & Smith – the exquisite vintage wedding venue - is surrounded by lush native foliage, charming birdsong, and English heritage trees on the expansive grounds of the Tauherenikau Racecourse. The venue radiates heritage charm, relaxation, and timeless elegance. The areas within the larger setting have evocative names such as ‘The Ceremony Lawn’; ‘The Party Lawn’; ‘The Forest Clearing’; ‘The Ranch house; ‘The Round Bar’; ‘The Tea House’ and ‘The Grandstand’. Let your imagination run wild ...
Bevege, in partnership with the Wairarapa Racing Club, restored the Tea House to its former glory for the beginning of a new era.
Rose & Smith was named in honour of the ‘Rose & Smith Builders’ who Teahouse, 1910. built the racecourse Tea House in 1923. Totally renovated and brought up to the latest building standards, the venue is one of the most popular wedding venues in Wairarapa.
With more than 20 years’ experience as an event professional, Paula had helped manage weddings at Tauherenikau and she fell in love with the trees and relaxing atmosphere. The heritage building was icing on the cake. Rose & Smith opened in 2018.
