Palmerston North School of Design Design is the real job Being a designer in Aotearoa has traditionally been lumped in with the vision of the struggling artist; creating amazing work with a trendy lifestyle, but being poor and needing a ‘real job’ to pay the bills. But today, design is the real job. The creative industries represent one of the biggest employment sectors in the country. In 2017 there were over 120,000 designers in New Zealand and job opportunities are growing at over 10 per cent a year. This means 12,000 new designers are needed every year to keep up with demand. And from an income perspective, the sector generates more money than all of agriculture combined.

FOODTRUCK BRAND BY JAYDEN TOLLEY (PWC report 2017, The Value of Design to New Zealand) Do you know creative people who need an opportunity for success? Courses at The Design School are starting soon. Contact us now.

Greytown School Our school is an exciting and welcoming place. We strive to inspire, strengthen and lead a teaching and learning culture where Collaboration, Innovation, and Challenge thrive, in order for our children to feel and be Purposeful as informed and active life-long learners.” There are numerous opportunities for children to experience and shine across the curriculum, in cultural and arts groups, sports, EOTC, leadership, band.

EDUCATION FOCUS Solway College

Te Kāreti o Manaia

Solway College now has a lengthy waiting list as it is being recognised both within Wairarapa and nationally as a top educational choice for young women. Academic results are exceptionally high with the 2020 NCEA results once again reaching a 100% attainment rate at NCEA Level 1, including 50% with Excellence endorsement, through to a 100% attainment rate at NCEA Level 3. Exceptional individuals and groups of Solway students continue to flourish not only in the classroom but also on the stage, sports fields and everywhere in between, honouring the school’s mission of providing a holistic education for young women in an inclusive, Christian, family environment. One example of Solway students shining is Sheryl Chand who represented the Lower North Island at the National Race Unity Speech Competition, successfully

obtaining the prestigious ‘Tohu Aumangea - Hedi Moani Memorial Award for Advocacy’. The 2021 school year started with the opening and blessing of their two new boarding dormitories to provide for the student growth in meeting the capped school roll. Every classroom in the school has now had a full refurbishment and fit out, providing warm, modern, comfortable learning environments for every student. An extensive number of solar panels have finished being installed, resulting in Solway College having one of the largest educational solar networks in New Zealand and becoming a leader in renewable energy solutions for schools. Planting by students of an additional 385 trees has begun on the extension of the school’s native bush area. This student project includes nine kahikatea trees in the shape of the nine visible stars of the Matariki cluster. To celebrate this, a special plaque has been

created to enable identification of each of the trees and their related star. Both of these projects contribute to the school’s ‘Kaitiaki te Kāreti o Manaia’ strategic priority, recognising the school’s role as kaitiaki or caregivers of the Manaia block land in which the school resides.

Enrolments for the 2022 school year are full, however families wanting their daughters to join the waiting list, or submit an enrolment for 2023 and beyond are encouraged to now do so.

EDUCATION FOCUS $10 million boost for literacy education An innovative research-based approach to how New Zealand children are taught to read is to be extended across the country with a $10 million Ministry of Education contract awarded to the University of Canterbury (UC). The Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA), developed by a team of researchers at UC’s Child Well-Being Research Institute, is being rolled out this year to over 1000 new entrant/Year 1 teachers and literacy specialists around New Zealand. The $10m funding over the next two years will support the upskilling of approximately 5000 teachers and literacy specialists through university’s new micro-credential professional development qualifications. The Better Start Literacy Approach builds on researchbased evidence about the most effective methods to teach children letter-sound knowledge, phonological awareness, vocabulary, oral language, reading and spelling. The approach uses quality children’s story books and fun, game-based phoneme awareness activities to build these critical foundational skills. Central to the Better Start Literacy Approach is the Ready to Read – Phonics Plus early readers, developed by the UC research team and recently published by the Ministry of Education as part of its new Early Literacy Approach. The Better Start Literacy Approach and the new readers have been specifically designed and developed for children in New Zealand. The new Ready to Read Phonics Plus books and activities have a distinctive New Zealand character that tamariki can relate to in their learning.

A structured curriculum is supported by Montessori-trained teachers and special Montessori equipment. Children are allowed to work at their own pace using unique materials. These encourage self-confidence, independence, self-discipline and concentration. The Montessori classroom is a thriving community of learners where everyone is treated with respect and dignity. Small groups and a rich Montessori programme foster love of learning, independence and creativity. For 114 years Montessori methods have transformed education in nearly

every country of the world. Wairarapa Montessori began 25 years ago. With exceptional support from parents there are now four Montessori primary classes in Carterton. This is what parents say about Wairarapa Montessori: “We knew from our first visit that our daughter would love her time here and would learn a great deal. Everything has exceeded our expectations. The teachers have fantastic parent-teacher relationships and do an amazing job caring for and teaching to every child’s individual needs. We recommend this centre to anyone!” “We highly value Montessori as the focus is on our children becoming confident, engaged, independent learners. Excellent learning materials, working at their own pace using their interests as motivation in close collaboration with their caring interested teachers in a supportive learning environment, is the key. Consequently our children are thriving, becoming more confident in their own abilities and most importantly, are happy.”

The curriculum features five key areas:  MATHEMATICS - GEOMETRY: Learning subtle gradations in size, length and weight, exploring solid and plane geometry shapes. Vocabulary expands as children revel in wonderful sounding names such as ovoid, ellipse, sphere and parallelogram.  SENSORIAL - ART: Working with size, colour, sound, weight, textures & shapes.  SCIENCE - GEOGRAPHY: Puzzle maps, globes, pictures and classification games teach the child about the world, our place in it and respect for other cultures.

 PRACTICAL LIFE: Real-life activities such as such as scrubbing, polishing, washing, cooking, sewing and food preparation, giving children skills to care for themselves and developing concentration and co-ordination.  READING & LANGUAGE: Building vocabulary and developing handwriting skills. Your visit is welcome: Experience first-hand what makes the Montessori approach unique.
