Earthquake generosity
BY GERALD FORD
Children at St Mary’s School in Carterton have given up some of their best loved toys for the children who were rattled by the Kaikoura earthquake. Principal Tim Nelson said the school community was very generous and had been “asked for a lot lately” with a Carterton Foodbank appeal, the Red and Black Mufti Day appeal, but had responded well to notices on Facebook and in the school newsletter.
Someone has made a real conscious decision to give up something they love. “We just got a really, really positive response,” Mr Nelson said. The toy collection was initiated by Carol Mullany, who has arranged annual blankets and knitting packages to be distributed through a medical centre in Christchurch earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. “The quake happened on Monday and I left a banana box at the school on Tuesday, Mrs Mullany said. “And every day it’s been full. The children have given up these. They’ve been well loved.” Having collected the toys, Carol was unsure how to get them down south, and so she contacted NZ First deputy leader Ron Mark, E

who plans to arrange distribution through Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith, and Te Tai Tonga (South Island) MP Rino Tirikatene and fellow NZ First MP Richard Foster. Mr Mark said the toys would be
“for children who might fi nd some comfort from knowing that some children in Carterton are thinking about them”. “I’ve seen these toys, these are not the toys at the bottom of the box that no-one likes,” Mr Mark
said. “Someone has made a real conscious decision to give up something they love for someone else.” The toys include hand-knitted dolls and animals, as well as some
famous faces in Kermit the Frog and Charlie Brown, and even a Beatrix Potter frog with his name (Jeremy Fisher) on his waistcoat. Close to 300 toys were donated, including some from Catholic churches in Wairarapa.

Nativity scene – selfie version Ford Every Stream
Gerald Ford There is something universal about the Christmas tale - a king born in a stable because there was no room at the inn. It’s the classic underdog story – a family that’s not much to look at but you just know there’s greatness there. Countless timeless “manger scenes” have recreated the events for mantlepieces around the world. So it was with mixed feelings that I found online a modern version of the story, with the “hipster” nativity scene. A cow branded as 100 percent organic eats gluten free feed while a “shepherd boy” in jeans uploads events to Twitter via his iPad. Three wise men – should that be wise guys? – rock up on Segways, with gifts in boxes emblazoned with the Amazon (online sales giant) logo. Mary is taking a selfie, her lips pouting in the pose known as duckface, which apparently emphasises the cheekbones. Joseph, like one of the wise men, has a “manbun”. The stable has a solar panel, and the product is marketed for “today’s millennials”. I’ve got to admit that it’s clever. It captures new baby life for a new generation – a generation just a tad younger and more tech savvy than me. (I’ve got this theory that we 40-somethings fall into a bit of a technological gap. Facebook took over the lives of those a bit
RACHEL
The stable has a solar panel, and (it) is marketed for “today’s millennials”. younger than us, those still in or just out of school – and of those a bit older than us who used it to keep in touch with their adult children. That’s my excuse anyway.) Technology aside, it makes sense to bring the story up to date and closer to home. I’ve often wondered what a Jesus of Masterton would look like. I picture Joseph and Mary riding into town on a Norton and finding the camping ground full, but being put up in the manager’s garage. The baby is wrapped in a carseat cover and put to bed in a recycling container. There’s a census on, so they were required to get here. The shepherds are workers at the local timber mill, working the night shift until there’s a power cut and the heavenly heralds show up with the news. Wise men don’t strictly belong in a nativity scene because they turned up later, but I kind of picture some kaumatua from way up north somewhere. Joseph and Mary themselves are probably of both Maori and European descent, with royalty in their heritage in both directions – but since the world has been taken over by the United Nations the path to the throne will be a rocky one. Peace on earth.

Farmers help out down south BY BECKIE WILSON
An attempt to move sheep across a landslide that once was a vehicle access road. PHOTO/SUPPLIED
A courtesy phone call from one farmer to another farmer sparked the generous efforts from some Wairarapa farmers to help a Kaikoura farming family whose home was wrecked in the 7.8 earthquake. Since the earthquake, which struck just after midnight on November 14, Kaikoura farmers have been struggling to get jobs done and ensure stock have water and feed. Most rural families are isolated, cut off from power, internet, and most means of communication. Zandy Wallace of Wai-iti Romneys in Masterton, a sheep stud, called up a loyal long-term client living on a sheep and beef station in Blue Duck Valley, Kaikoura, to see how they were coping. The Blue Duck Valley farmer had planned three days of docking to start on the day of the earthquake, but “obviously” those
Lending a hand in Kaikoura BY HAYLEY GASTMEIER
It was the “emotional damage” the earthquake caused in Kaikoura which “shook” Wairarapa volunteers most. Four Red Cross Wairarapa members returned from the South Island town last week, after spending five days there helping out. Fiona Flis, leader of the Disaster Welfare Support Team, said the experience was both inspiring and a challenge. “The structural damage wasn’t as bad as it was in Christchurch, it was the emotional damage that shocked me most.” Red Cross Wairarapa volunteers, deputy team leader Lynne Drake, of Featherston, equipment officer Debs Bailey and safety officer Brian Veitch, both of Masterton, headed to Kaikoura with Mrs Flis a week after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Mrs Flis said there were at least 40 Red Cross volunteers in Kaikoura helping with the relief effort at any one time, and teams were rotated on a five-day roster. “That’s about all you can take, emotionally and physically,” she
said. With extremely damaged roads completely cutting off land access, the team were flown in to the east coast town. On arrival they were allocated tasks, including delivery of food packages to rural areas. This meant traversing roads with “cracks, breaks and potholes”, sometimes a metre wide. “The aftershocks there were a huge problem, we’d be driving along having rocks come down off the cliff beside us.” Mrs Flis said at one point the team “heard the road beneath us cracking”. Other tasks were carrying out physio social first aid, which is designed to reduce post-traumatic stress disorder, helping housing inspectors with property checks- where the volunteers used this time to assess residents’ wellbeing and offer assistance- and manning the welfare centre, which was set up in a school. Mrs Flis said some of the residents were unable to leave town because of animals on their farms, and some people were
living in garages, too afraid to go back into their homes. One woman, 85, refused to move out of her coastal house she had lived in her whole life, despite the rest of the street’s residents relocating. Some residents had sewage in their back yards because sewer pipes were broken but people continued to flush their toilets. In the five days they were there, the team worked closely with Police, Fire Services, St John, Search and Rescue, the Navy, and the Army, which Mrs Flis said deserved “a pat on the back” for the “incredible catering”. The highlight of the trip was “seeing the seals are still there”, and hearing reports of whale and dolphin sightings. Mrs Flis said “people need to be prepared to look after themselves for five days” in a disaster. Drinking water and a wellstocked emergency kit was top priority, with a can opener and unbreakable crockery the key. Plastic bags and a bucket should be included for use as a toilet, and people should get to
plans fell to pieces, Mr Wallace said. That’s when I hung up the phone and thought we could probably do it,” he said. Mr Wallace rounded up a group of four others farmers with Tim Williams from Wairarapa Helicopters also getting involved. On Friday November 25, Mr Williams flew the group, which included Mr Wallace, his brother Ed Wallace, and their father Tim Wallace, as well as James Cates, down with four farm dogs and gear. The helicopter helped the men to muster stock ready for docking, move gear and people due to the loss of accessible roads. The five men arrived at the station, to find the family, parents and two young children, living in a three-bay pole shed with a concrete floor and three walls, as their home was deemed unliveable. Their only access out now is
from a bulldozed-out road along the beach, and only for fourwheel drive conditions.” The extensively run sheep and beef station bore a large grunt of the quake. Roads that were drivable pre-quake are now a struggle to walk a mob of sheep across. “All farms have a lot of damage to fences, which creates imminent issues for stock management and containment. “The family are one amongst many that are in this sort of situation.” “[There were] large rock slides, tracks that were impassable, with lots of ground movement, slumping and slipping of the hillsides.” Mr Wallace said it was a very humbling and satisfying experience to help the family, and to see how they were living. The people in the townships affected have a few more options, but these guys on the farms are living in garages, he said.

Focus on photo locations
BY GERALD FORD
Carterton man Max Webby has travelled the North Island researching the best places to take a photo – and is marketing the results in electronic form. Photolocations of New Zealand, North Island is an ebook document that is downloadable to a phone, and Max is set on selling them to tourists from New Zealand and abroad for $5 each. The Wairarapa locations Max has settled on are Castlepoint on the east coast, and the Pinnacles in South Wairarapa. Other natural landmarks include Waihi Falls. Along with Max’s own beautiful photographs, the publication includes practical information such as times and distances, right down to detailed GPS references. The book includes the pros and cons of different transport options, and what to do when you get to each site. “I also tell people where to park, how long the walk is … so basically I’ve done all the research,” The seasonal information includes the best time of year to photograph waterfalls and snowy mountains in both islands, and when the pohutuka is in flower. Fast food lovers can look forward to having the option of Pita Pit or Domino’s on Chapel St next year. Pita Pit will be serving up pitas, salads and smoothies, while Domino’s will dish out pizzas, sides, drinks and desserts.Malcolm Goldsworthy co-owns the new Pita Pit alongside his wife Lisa, who is the school secretary at Wairarapa College. Mr Goldsworthy has 15-20 years of experience in franchising, previously working with Fastway couriers. He sold in September 2011 and “has been looking for something ever since”. A friend recommended Pita Pit to Mr Goldsworthy. “It wasn’t until I started researching that things started to align,” he said. “I took my young son over and we tried it, we both enjoyed it. “I did the research and found [the franchise] was growing.” The location on Chapel St in the heart of a fast food

I’ve continually seen it and experienced it… “As governments become more and more stretched, the arts falls more and more to a community of patrons, sponsors and workers. There have to be places outside the frame of workaday obligations and the turn of the wheels of the system. Creation requires space.” The exhibition is curated by authorphotographer Madeleine Slavick with the assistance of Aratoi Museum and NZ Pacific Studio resident artist Mark Manning, a painter who was raised in Whangarei, educated at Lyme Art Academy in New England, and who has curated shows in California. “Art is a living thing. It needs nourishment. It needs a community,” Ms Slavick said.

Kid heaven is here Ra Smith A mokopuna of Wairarapa Summer and Christmas in New Zealand is just made for tamariki or children. I remember coming home as a tangata whenua of Wairarapa and being met with the vision of kid heaven. Coming down the Lansdowne hill we crossed the Waipoua River, we looked down into the swimming pool, we looked across at the playground, we looked to the other water playgrounds like boating and the shallow pools of water. Home was made for a mokopuna like me. It might have come too easily. Thankfully we have a better quality of mokopuna today. The mokopuna today are not just accepting the benefits of treasures handed down to them, they are working to build up our treasures. Enviro Schools is a programme that many schools are involved in. Gill Stewart and Esther Dijkstra are two of the organisers that work with schools not just about activities and learning, but the place of the environment in school charters too. Then when South End School students work with Andy Duncan in their town’s constructed wetland, it is not just a homework project, it is a lifetime project

from home. Mokopuna inheriting the lifestyle of their grandparents isn’t old fashioned, it is our responsibility to leave home better than we found it. A part of knowing I was from Wairarapa was working as whanau in the shearing sheds. Recently John Wardell gave me a photograph of my nanny and poupou, my grandparents, who were with his family in their shearing shed. Our community has worked together to supply wool and lamb to the world. I now work with Mr Wardell and other champions like Vern Brassell. Mr Brassell’s innovative constructed wetland is a symbol of hope. The very habitat for indigenous birds and fish is working with a Kaiwaiwai dairy
operation as they cleanse water. After a day in the sheds, a soothing dip in the river was another sign of home. The work of Don Bell and Esther Dijkstra in willow trials is getting better results from wastewater treatment, another strand of innovation in Wairarapa. Leadership in local government is connecting the community with its environment. When children have environmental connections; when whanau have environmental connections; when our living is environmentally centred, home is not only a playground; home is a work place; home is a place of learning; home is a place of healing our spirits. When home shapes us, we are tangata whenua.
Recycling boost Ecotopia Alan Fielding
At long, long last meat trays in shops are appearing in clear polyethylene (PE) a very commonly recycled plastic. Earlier meat trays were made from polystyrene, usually black, and quite recyclable if you could find a way to clean them to a high standard. As is often the case with such resources, it is less expensive to buy new and not bother about reusing. That is fine, like a lot of things, in the short term, for a shortsighted society. “But wait – ” as they say in those utterly boring TV ads –
there is more good news: New World are going to recycle your PE shopping bags. Good news indeed! Then why can’t Masterton District Council and their waste contractors do just that – recycle PE bags? We are told these bags are not recyclable. New World obviously knows something MDC doesn’t. Of course they’re recyclable. Methinks somebody has been telling porkies and it isn’t the New World butchers. The answer lies in simply creating a market for these recycled bags through product development … if anybody is actually interested … (yawn, yawn) oh well … (yawn) good night. I’m going to have a lovely dream about a truly entrepreneurial society.

Garden Talk en Barn with Gard
HARDY, EASY TO GROW
PLANT FRUIT
ESCALLONIAS TREES NOW!
Makes a Some varieties have limited ‘blooming numbers, so get great’ hedge.
HYDRANGEA HEAVEN Hydrangeas were once in every grandmother’s garden. They went out of fashion for a few years, but once again, they have come back into vogue. You only need to browse the latest interior design magazines to discover how hydrangeas can add beauty and art-form to any room. They look just as showy in a rambling cottage garden as they do in a formal garden. As a benefit for those with busy lifestyles, hydrangeas perform well in areas that require low maintenance and little effort. They are deciduous and can be easily pruned. Hydrangeas, are by nature, woodland plants and are happiest in such settings. And they are not fussy either, by growing just as well in full sun or the dappled shade of a deciduous tree (though they will not thrive if the sun is shaded out by dense, evergreen trees). In general, the more sun they receive, the better they will flower. In very hot situations it would be wise to give them a small amount of shade to stop the plants drying out too quickly. This will also prevent the flowers from wilting or scorching. Hydrangeas perform best in a rich loamy soil with plenty of available moisture, though they will tolerate poorer soils. The mophead variety will even grow in damp parts of the garden. So, is blue your colour, or do you prefer pink? Hydrangeas are unique plants and allow you to transform the colour of their flowers to compliment your garden. This is as simple as whether your soil is acidic or alkaline. If your soil is acidic, then gradually the plant will become established and give you the dazzling blue you wanted. To help achieve your hydrangeas to become blue, you can add sulphur and lightly dig it into the soil. Another option is adding aluminium sulphate. But be cautious, as too much aluminium added to the soil can be harmful to the plant roots. To get pink or even red flowers, you need to grow your hydrangeas in limey soil. To help them along, add lime twice a year to increase the PH. Remember, little and often is safer for plants. Too much lime at one time can cause chlorosis, which is when the leaves turn yellow and green veins appear on the leaves. Dolomite lime is by far the best form. For those of you whom prefer the serenity of white, then at GardenBarn we also sell white flowered hydrangeas. These will not change their colour, so will remain white whatever the soil composition.
Be aware that when you buy a hydrangea, it may take two or three years to settle down to a permanent colour. You may buy what is described on the label as blue, only to find it grows as pink in your soil. Two common varieties of hydrangeas include the mophead variety and the lacecap variety. Lacecaps are identical to mopheads in every way except the shape of their blooms. Mopheads feature large round flower heads resembling pom-poms. Lacecap hydrangeas bear flat round flower heads with centres of fertile flowers surrounded by outer rings of sterile flowers. So whether you are a grandmother, uncle, teenager, professional or novice, there is bound to be a hydrangea for you!!
DECEMBER PEST WATCH Watch out for the potato and tomato psyllid attacking your plants. This tiny sap-sucking pest causes the leaves to curl and yellow. Also look out for the 2mm long, cicada-like insect or the bright yellow eggs attached to leaves. Begin spraying with Mavrik, Yates Success Ultra or other natural pyrethrum product.

Zero balance keeps members in green Last month we briefly mentioned one of the features of a local currency trading system was the option to spend credits before they were earned, and that it doesn’t have penalty interest added to the overdraft. This aspect of the trading system often surprises people and three questions usually follow soon after. How far below can you go? What happens when you get to your limit? What stops someone spending up large and then not paying back? To answer those questions you need to start at the joining process. When members fill out and sign their application form, they also sign a members’ agreement form, these are legal and binding documents that safeguard both the member and the organisation. Administration puts in an automatic overdraft for each member and their credit/ overdraft limit is based on their circumstances. This figure can be adjusted for new or existing members as they show a track record in effort with their give and take.Businesses obviously have the capacity for a lot more earning opportunities and their limits are taken in accordance
with that. Members pay a NZ$ yearly subscription of just $25 with a one-off $5 joining fee. Traders come under the accordance of the ‘fair trading act’ so a bare-minimum standard of fair and reasonable applies to all trading. If a member is to leave the region and the exchange group (some traders can still trade ‘remotely’ even when out of the region due to the nature of their trades) then their account must be brought back to zero whether that means they need to spend (or donate) their credits to zero off, or earn credits to bring it up to the zero. If the overdraft amount owing is not paid in G$ then the payment must be settled up to zero in NZ$. So although Green $$ is not ‘real’ money it still has accountability and the system is not designed as a ‘free for all’ to take everything

going and give nothing back. The overall condition of a members account is accessible to any of the other members should they want to check it before trading. They can see the percentage of sales verses purchases, the member’s balance and when they last traded. They cannot see what the member bought or who with. This makes the system transparent and traders make their reputation by their activity. When someone reaches close to their limit, their account is redflagged to any sellers to let them know this trader should be earning rather than spending so they have the option whether to proceed with the sale. Next G$ market is this weekend December 10 from 9.30am until 1pm at the fabulous event centre in Carterton.

HEALTH
MATTERS
SMOKING OR CHRISTMAS?
Keeping the cheer in Christmas Christmas is a time to get together with friends and family and celebrate the holiday season. It’s also a time when injuries and illness can happen.
Did you know that the cost of your week’s supply of cigarettes could go a long way towards Christmas dinner or gifts for your family?
Here are some tips for staying safe and well over the festive break. Food safety – make sure food is covered and kept chilled if needed so it doesn’t go off in the summer heat. Keep it safe with the BBQ – use tongs, check for gas bottle leaks and avoid using BBQs inside. Be a responsible host – offer guests a range of beverages including non-alcoholic drinks and serve food with drinks. Avoid outdoor injuries – wear covered shoes and gloves when getting the garden Christmas-ready and get everyone to warm up before the annual family cricket match.
If you’d like to quit, there’s plenty of local support available to help.
Be sun-smart – re-apply sun block regularly, wear a hat and cover up during the hottest times of the day. Stock up! Check your first aid kit for expired medication and replace anything that’s been used. If you’re on medication, make sure you have enough for the holiday break.
Stress less – remember that Christmas is about having fun and sharing special times with family. Keep gatherings relaxed, share the workload and talk to family about a budget limit for gifts.

The AA is reminding drivers to take special care as the most lethal month on our roads begins. In the past five years December has averaged nearly 31 deaths on the roads, well above any other month. “The AA wants drivers to do all they can to protect themselves this month and every month,” AA spokesman Simon Douglas said. “That means sticking to a safe speed for the conditions, increasing your following distance, keeping 100% focussed on your driving, wearing your seatbelt and not driving when you’re tired or impaired.” The AA is also reminding drivers that, as in recent summers, the speed tolerance will be 4kmh through
December and January and the Police will be out in force. “We are heading into a special time of the year and it’s worth taking special care on the roads,” Mr Douglas said. “Nearly 300 people have lost their lives already in 2016 and the AA wants every family to enjoy summer without the devastation of losing a loved one.” Your best protection against a crash: • Drive to the conditions • Stick to a safe speed • Give yourself more following distance • Keep your focus on driving • Don’t drive when you are tired

the from Zone 4
Wairarapa Lions
Activities for November Carterton Central Lions Club members helped sell raffle tickets for Parkinson’s Wairarapa recently and also three handcrafted rocking horses. Proceeds will go towards housing for our very own “Surrey with a Fringe on Top”. Members had lots of fun entering a float into the Carterton Christmas Parade and helped the Rotary Club distribute their balloons on the parade. Carterton Lions Club held their annual Auction Night recently which was well attended by members, partners, local celebrity guests & visitors from Tawa Lions Club. Mayor John Booth & local MP Ron Mark both donated 2 hrs of their time to be auctioned off, which created some very healthy bidding. Transferring into the club is Lion Malcolm Baird. He is a Life Member of Lions International and an ex member of Turangi & Middlemore Lions Clubs. Masterton Holdsworth Lions Club recently held a “Paper Bag” auction at a club night to raise funds for the Kaikoura Earthquake Appeal. A

successful sausage sizzle has been held. A Christmas Raffle is being run with proceeds going to the Wellington Free Ambulance. Masterton Host Waipoua Lions Club community fireworks display went ahead on the November 5 at Solway Showgrounds. As forecast, the rain stopped and wind calmed and the cool evening again saw large numbers attending. Supporters that helped make the event possible included Masterton District Council, Wairarapa Times-Age and Mediaworks. Wairarapa Ruamahanga Lions Club has sourced a supply of sheep manure and the club is selling it as a fundraiser in 20kg bags or by the trailer-load. Please contact Michael on 06 370 4282 for more information. As Lion Geoff Walker prepared for his fourth visit to Uganda, a team of Greytown Lions Club members, members from other Lions Clubs and community members worked very hard loading donated goods into a shipping container that will follow him for the village of Ajan. Geoff works closely with the Lions Club of Gulu Metropolitan in Uganda with these projects. A truly international project supported by the Wairarapa community and its surrounds. A recent raffle raised over $1000 for Parkinsons Wairarapa, and Greytown Lions Club

members led by Lion Alan McCartney have finished a new fence at Arbor House. Martinborough Lions Club were on duty again to meet and greet the 8000 Toast Martinborough Wine Festival revellers. It was the 25th festival that has been held every November. The Martinborough Lions have been involved with the festival since its inception and have played an active role its development over the 25 years.
Greytown Lioness Club members enjoyed guest speaker Bronwyn Cook who works with the neonatal babies in Wellington. A sausage sizzle at the country market was successful and another will be held at the January market. The Christmas raffle is on sale and the Club will host the Over 70s Live Alone Christmas Dinner. Featherston Lioness Club members have collected for Parkinsons Wairarapa, and
donated to Camp Quality, a camp for children with life treating illness. In January members are going on a guided tour of the Malaghan Institute in Wellington. The club has supported the institute for many years so the trip will be very interesting. Congratulations to Lorraine Ihaka who has received recognition for her Service of 20 years to Lions.

Library in your pocket BY AROHA WITINITARA
Libraries are great places. People have enjoyed reading books since around 2400BC but now technology is putting a strain on printed stories. Now e–readers have gained popularity but young people have made reading even more convenient and accessible by getting their reading material from the cloud. They use online reading applications such as Wattpad. Such websites are platforms on which you can read novels and short stories which have been uploaded by other users. Young people who regularly read report that they are the most likely to find their reading material on the internet than from any other source. The first reason why this trend has emerged is because digital works are accessible to a degree to which libraries cannot begin to compete with. With a cellphone and internet connection you can instantly access thousands of stories. These stories can then be saved to be read on the go. An entire library can be stored in your pocket. Online platforms encourage young people to try their hand at writing. Most of the books uploaded are written by teenagers for teenagers. As a result young

people feel more connected to the stories and are more likely to identify with the characters. A library has a maximum inventory and they are constantly getting rid of stock to make way for new stories. The cloud has an infinite amount of space so its catalogue is constantly growing. Online platforms also have a greater range of stories especially for genres that aren’t very popular. For online platforms, a downside of having a large inventory is that the quality of some of the stories is low. For readers, it can be a difficult task working through the poorly written work to find something that is enjoyable to read. This generally isn’t a problem when looking at published works. Another downside is that you miss the feeling of holding the book. I find that information can be difficult to absorb when it’s trapped behind a computer screen and research has shown that people who read from screens are less likely to absorb information. There are pros and cons to using digital technology in our everyday lives but it is important for us to maintain a balance between digital and physical work to maximize the benefits of both.

NEW KIA AND SUZUKI SHOWROOM MAKES EASTWOOD MOTOR GROUP THE ULTIMATE DESTINATION This Saturday sees the o˜ cial opening of the new Kia and Suzuki Showroom at Eastwood Motor Group along with the new Vehicle Preparation Centre. The new facilities are an exciting development for EMG, says General Manager Gary Allan. “We are excited to have the largest franchise dealership in the Wairarapa, and having the newest and largest showroom will help us to deliver an even better customer experience.” The Hyundai, Isuzu, Kia and Suzuki brands are all located in close proximity at the corner of Dixon and Harlequin Streets.
“We have always wanted Eastwood Motor Group to be the ultimate place for all things motoring. When people come here now they will ÿ nd a large variety of vehicles at one handy location, helping to make an easier selection and smoother purchasing process.” EMG has gone through a very positive period over the last few years, Gary says, as is illustrated by some of the most recent sales statistics. “We are very fortunate to have such strong brands that are all experiencing growth. This year in Wairarapa the Isuzu D-max
is the number one selling ute by a country mile, Kia and Hyundai are the top two selling passenger vehicles, and Suzuki is going well too. “Roughly every second vehicle sold in the Wairarapa is sold by us. We are extremely lucky to have such a loyal customer base. They have helped us to buck the nationwide trends and dominate market share where in most other regions more traditional mainstream brands usually feature.” Gary has been a part of Eastwood Motor Group since its beginning in 2010. He was born and bred in the Wairarapa and started in the industry at what was then Majestic Motors as Junior Sales Person in 2006. Over the past ten years Gary has enjoyed a variety of roles from salesman to sales manager and becoming General Manager two years ago. EMG Dealer Principal and

environment. As a locally-owned business with 24 employees and growing each year, EMG supports many local families. Gary and wife Tiana have three young children themselves Corbyn, Mason and Braxton.

NEW KIA & SUZUKI SHOWROOM GRAND OPENING 10 DEC 10 ˜ 4
NEW SHOWROOM FULFILS A DREAM FOR MIKE EASTWOOD On a wall in the customer lounge at Eastward Motor Group is a striking photo of Sir Edmund Hillary with one of his many memorable quotes - “I am a lucky man. I have had a dream and it has come true, and that is not a thing that happens often to men.” In a small way, EMG Dealer Principal and Managing Director Mike Eastwood feels the same way. “I guess that says it all. I feel like quite a lucky man. I’ve done what I set out to do and fulÿ lled a lot of dreams I had for Eastwood Motor Group. “I always dreamed that this business would get to the stage where I would be very proud of it, and that time has arrived with the completion of the new Kia and Suzuki Showroom.”
Mike recalls he virtually “fell” into the business after a career in accountancy and ÿ nancial management in the construction industry. When Mike returned to Masterton where he grew up with wife Nolene in 2010, he bought the franchises for Hyundai and Kia from Majestic Motors. “It was a case of the right opportunity at the right moment. I was inspired [to buy the business] because of its Hyundai and Kia franchises in particular.” From that moment on, Mike put a priority on customer satisfaction, improving the physical environment of the business on the corner of Dixon and Harlequin Streets, and lifting the standard of service.
A big refurbishment in 2012 made the business much more pleasant and practical for both sta° and customers and brought EMG up to Hyundai Elite Status. A Wairarapa representative rugby player in the early 1970s, Mike enjoys describing EMG using rugby metaphors. The success of the business has been built on strong team work, he says. “Team and pride are our philosophies.” Mike sees the Sales team at EMG as the “backs” - the extrovert players who are the face of the business. The Service team are the hardworking “forwards” in the background. While the backs have been enjoying the limelight lately with impressive sales ÿ gures,
Mike is expecting the forwards to play an increasingly important role in the success of the business now that they will have more space to carry out repairs and servicing. Mike plans to continue in the business as Dealer Principal, but as part of the succession plan for the business is passing on more of its management to General Manager Gary Allan. Lambing up, numbers down Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s (B+LNZ) Lamb Crop 2016 report says the average lambing percentage across the country was up 2.1 percentage points – though lamb numbers were down because of fewer ewes. The average lambing percentage was 123 lambs born per 100 ewes and it was achieved because ewes were in good condition, there was enough spring feed, and more lambs were born from hoggets. Beef + Lamb New Zealand Economic Service chief economist Andrew Burtt said the report estimates 23.7 million lambs were tailed this spring. They came from a breeding ewe flock that was down 3.1 per cent on last year. “The smaller ewe flock occurred with the shift towards cattle production and the impact of facial eczema in North Island regions. “Farmers read the climatic signals and made decisions early and the lamb crop result reinforces the impact of those management decisions.”
Twice the rain
Green grass is persisting into December in Wairarapa after a November with more than twice the usual rainfall in many places. Tuaherenikau saw 183mm of rain, and Waiorongomai in South Wairarapa 238mm, more than twice the average for November 89mm and 118mm respectively. At Angle Knob in the Tararuas, 1276.5mm fell for the month, again more than twice the average November rainfall of 615mm. At Tinui Valley on the east coast the weather was drier with 94mm falling, which is still 25 percent higher than the average November rainfall.
In North Island regions, lamb numbers were affected by the impact of facial eczema on breeding ewe condition and numbers, and wet climatic conditions which hindered lamb growth rates, Mr Burtt said. Lamb numbers in South Island regions were slightly ahead of last season, due to good climatic conditions, improved lamb thrift and a lift in ewe lambing percentages. These factors combined to offset a decrease in breeding ewe numbers. Burtt said over the whole country, there was a 1.3 per cent drop – or 0.3 million fewer lambs than last year. In the North Island, 11.3 million lambs were tailed – down 0.3 million on last year, but up on 2013’s tally. Meanwhile, 12.4 million lambs were tailed in the South Island. Burtt says that there will be 19.4 million lambs available for export in the 2016-17 season – down an estimated 2.7 per cent. This contrasts with last season’s 19.9 million.
Lambing percentages were up despite fewer ewes. PHOTO/FILE
“Lamb export receipts for 2016-17 are estimated at $2.5 billion, slightly down on the previous season,” Mr Burtt The lamb crop survey covers 500 commercial sheep and beef farms, which are statistically representative of New Zealand’s commercial sheep and beef farms.

Guildford off to Waikato BY JAKE BELESKI
Former All Black Zac Guildford has decided Waikato is the best place to continue his path back towards the top levels of New Zealand rugby. Guildford was a crucial cog in the Wairarapa-Bush Heartland Championship team that reached the Meads Cup semi-finals this season, and had options to consider when the season finished. Ultimately, he always wanted to stay in New Zealand. “I’m pretty happy here at the moment,” he said. “The way things have been going, and unless it was going to change my life dramatically, I wasn’t really looking at that option [going overseas] at the moment.” Waikato had shown faith that Guildford would be a positive fit in their environment, and he was excited about the chance to continue his development in their club rugby scene. “They just got in touch with me and not a lot of other provinces had, so it’s a good chance for me to keep fit and play a bit of rugby at the same time.” Sevens will be his main focus initially, and that in itself was a challenge he was looking
forward to tackling. “That [sevens] is the priority for the next wee while. “I haven’t played a lot of sevens in the past to be fair, only one tournament with New Zealand and a couple of smaller tournaments but it’s keeping me fit and given me a focus at the moment — it should hold me in good stead coming into 15s as well.” He may have only played one tournament for New Zealand, but it was a gold medalwinning effort at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India. Guildford spent the majority of the season with WairarapaBush playing at centre, and was keen to further develop his skills in that position if given the chance. “I did really enjoy my time at centre and improving the skills you need to play there in terms of catch and pass and that sort of stuff. “That would be my preferred position at the moment, but I’m pretty happy playing anywhere in the outside backs to be fair.” Wairarapa-Bush chief executive officer, Tony Hargood, said the union was pleased Guildford had taken the next step towards a return to Mitre 10 Cup.

“We were totally aware that at the end of the Heartland Championship there were a number of clubs and provinces who were in communication with Zac. “It’s absolutely fantastic from our point of view — we’d obviously love to have Zac here in the heartland next year, but he’s got to focus on his career and if we’ve been part of getting him there then that’s fantastic.”

New Zealand’s blade runner, Liam Malone, is speaking in Masterton this Thursday, December 8, at a breakfast hosted by the Wairarapa Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with ANZ. Malone was born with deformed legs and had both feet amputated at 18 months old. He won the Nelson Sportsperson of the Year. Malone captured two gold medals and a silver at this year’s Paralympic Games. “My life hasn’t changed since Rio,” he said. “My life changed when I started taking ownership and responsibility for all the outcomes in my life. The day I started setting goals and focussing on achieving them was when my life changed.” Wairarapa Chamber of Commerce chair Sean Stafford said business breakfast events was

one area the body was seeking to develop more effectively. “ . . . we’re adapting to ensure we become more relevant as an advocate for business in Wairarapa. “We received some strong feedback along the lines of these breakfasts being one of the areas of value that the business community liked about the chamber. Mr Stafford said the chamber was focussed on getting quality speakers over the next 12 months, and Malone was a perfect candidate to start with. “We’ve been working with ANZ to get Liam down and the reason is we think he’s a great example of someone who has thrived in the face of adversity – his approach to managing challenges and adversity is just as relevant to business and life as it is to sport.”

Winners bowled over by award
This month’s winner for the Wairarapa Won service award is Master Bowl in Queen Street, Masterton. The Wairarapa Won Awards recognise exceptional service from either an individual or business. Nominations are called for each month with advertisements in the Times-Age. The Master Bowl nomination was made by Sarah Kohitolu, who said: “Angie, her whanau and all staff are all exceptional people. They are so friendly and family oriented and I could not fault them at all. My family often goes to Master Bowl as a family hangout or treat, even my siblings from Dannevirke and the Hutt, and we just love it there. The service and atmosphere is amazing! “The food is awesome and Rob makes awesome mochas. We love them to bits! They’re just like family. They go that extra mile to make our time there the best, even giving us goodie bags when they find out it’s one of our birthdays and running over to New World to buy soy milk for my sister’s mocha... awesome people.” Darren Pilcher who built Master Bowl six years ago from scratch and opened it with Angie Fleming, says they “appreciate that people out there wanted

We strive to do our best and provide fun and entertainment for the community.” Darren says the first four years were a challenge. However the past two have seen the business flourish and people are appreciating a type of entertainment that is rare to find in a town of Masterton’s size. Last January the couple added bumper cars to the bowling, which have become an attraction in themselves.
Cameron a favourite Masterton farmer Richard Cameron is picked as a likely winner of the regional finals for Young Farmer of the Year next year. The East Coast regionals, to be held on April 1 at Waipukurau, feature the top eight placed competitors from district contests in Wairarapa, Tararua and Hawkes Bay. “It’s the Wairarapa winner Richard Cameron, who many believe will come out on top,” a Young Farmers spokesperson said. “Cameron, 28, is hugely experienced having competed in four previous Regional Finals,” the spokesperson said. Cameron manages a 750ha sheep
and beef farm and his own smaller farm, holds a Certificate in Agriculture and “has broad practical experience, having worked on a 250,000ha sheep station in Australia”. The second-placed Wairarapa entrant is Henry Reynolds, 26, a fifthgeneration sheep beef and cropping farmer who holds a Diploma in Agriculture and Farm Management and is expected to be particularly competitive in the practical sections. The Hawkes Bay District Contest and Skills Day winner Hamish Best is also considered a front-runner, having finished second in last year’s Regional Final.

Top Doorslammer Nigel Dixon is coming down from Hamilton
CENTRAL NATIONALS this weekend start of a great season of racing at MMP Some of New Zealand’s fastest dragsters will be in Masterton this weekend for the Central Nationals at the Masterton Motorplex track. Points achieved from racing this Saturday and Sunday go towards the National Finals which are also being held in Masterton on March 18 and 19, following two more meetings at Taupo and Motueka. The actual number of entries which will cover 12 di˜ erent classes of drags, street cars and bikes won’t be known until the eleventh hour but MMP Chair Bob Wilton is expecting them to exceed the 150 mark, judging by the early interest being shown from competitors from both the North and South Islands. “We’ve already got entries from as far south as Invercargill. It’s all shaping to be something really special,” he says. “If drivers and riders miss one of the meets they will ÿ nd it very di˛ cult to make up
February and 49th NZ Nationals in March. Capping o˜ the season will be a Top Alcohol Challenge in April.
Hamilton’s Nigel Dixon will be an interesting entry in the Top Doorslammer class. He is a past national titleholder in that division and also won that class when Masterton Motorplex ÿ rst opened its own drag strip.
Bob says it will be interesting to see which meeting gets the biggest attendance given the popularity of each in its own right.
It has been given an almost complete make-over including a new motor and gearbox and in Dixon’s words is now “ready to rumble.” MMP has a great line up of meetings this season. After the Central Nationals comes Dragstalgia in January, the Auckland Invasion in
Times will only get faster as the drag strip next door to Masterton Airport continues to mature, Bob says, with one of New Zealand’s major television stations planning to ÿ lm one of the meetings. Visitors will notice further improvements to the venue including a balcony around the timing tower, and new gardens and lawns. A shelter is also being built between the two lanes at the starting line. This will give the starters more protection from the sun and cars and also allows VIP guests and ÿ lm crews to get a close up view of the action.

Light up Christmas with reds whites and greens
A Christmas-inspired salad. PHOTO/SUPPLIED
Christmas is the perfect time to enjoy fresh, colourful food with loved ones. And here in New Zealand Christmas time offers up perfectly themed red, green and white fresh fruit and vegetables. Think of them as nature’s Christmas gifts. 5+ A Day suggests taking advantage of the beautiful
Christmas-coloured fresh fruit and vegetables to prepare eye-catching dishes with minimal fuss. A salad featuring vibrant green asparagus and rich red strawberries offers a festive flavour that is simple to make. Here are more delicious ideas using New Zealand Christmas favourites.
STRAWBERRIES
ASPARAGUS Asparagus is a good source of folate, which is important for mental wellbeing. It also contains vitamin C and riboflavin, which helps to regulate metabolism. Look for asparagus with tightly furled, perky tips and straight, strong stalks.
Quick recipe ideas
The tender, sweet taste of asparagus makes it a particularly good vegetable to lightly steam, grill, stirfry or cook on the barbecue. To prepare, snap off the tough ends. Grilled asparagus makes a quick tasty side dish that’s smoky, sweet and simple. Toss the stalks with a little oil before throwing them on the barbecue, and finish with a simple sprinkle of salt and pepper. For a festive salad, arrange baby spinach leaves in a circle on a large platter. Place cooked asparagus spears on top of the spinach along with chopped strawberries. Crumble over feta cheese before serving. For a classic Christmas canape, steam asparagus until tender, then wrap each tip in a slice of Parma ham. Serve with a light citrus dip.
Strawberries are a good source of vitamin C and contain dietary fibre, which is good for healthy digestion. They also contain niacin for healthy skin, and potassium, which is good for children’s growth and development.
Quick recipe ideas
Delicious simply on their own, strawberries are perfect at any time of the day. For a summery start to your day blend a handful of strawberries with milk or your favourite non-dairy milk, then sweeten to taste with just a touch of pure maple syrup or agave. For a quick no-churn “ice cream” blend frozen banana chunks and fresh strawberries in a food processor until smooth and creamy. This is best eaten the same day, otherwise it will develop ice crystals. For a salad, toss a pile of strawberries with a few tablespoons of balsamic vinegar and some freshly ground black pepper and combine with salad greens. Add a touch of decadence to the quintessential Christmas treat – the chocolate dipped strawberry. Before the chocolate sets, roll the strawberry in finely chopped nuts or coconut. These are best eaten the same day.
NEW POTATOES One of the most popular vegetables in New Zealand, potatoes provide 40 percent of the daily recommended dietary intake of vitamin C per serving. The fibre content in potatoes, particularly in the skin, can help aid digestion.
Quick recipe ideas
Boiled or steamed till tender, new potatoes make a substantial addition to festive salads. For an easy dressing, shake olive oil, Dijon mustard and chopped fresh chives in a jar. For a salad, in a bowl layer cooked new potatoes, baby beetroot, spinach leaves, red onion and pumpkin seeds. Drizzle over the dressing. As an accompaniment to the traditional Christmas roast, lightly coat new potatoes with olive oil and spread on a roasting dish along with freshly cut limes (or lemons), crushed garlic cloves and sprigs of rosemary. Season with cracked pepper and chilli flakes. Roast until crisp and golden. Chop fresh Italian parsley over the potatoes and serve.
TOMATOES Tomatoes are a good source of vitamin C, a natural antioxidant that prevents free radicals from damaging the body’s cells. They also contain vitamin A, important for vision, as well as potassium, which plays a role in maintaining nerve health.
Quick recipe ideas
For a colourful Christmas-themed salad using New Zealand-grown tomatoes, try a caprese salad. Thinly slice large red tomatoes and arrange on a plate. Tear up mozzarella cheese and layer with the tomatoes. Top with fresh basil leaves. Drizzle over olive oil and a sprinkling of salt and pepper for seasoning. Tomatoes take on an intensely deep flavour after roasting and can be used in many different ways. Put tomatoes on a baking sheet with sliced garlic and thyme, and drizzle over olive oil. Add seasoning and roast for one hour. Arrange mesclun salad greens on a platter and place roasted tomatoes on top. Finish with a homemade dressing.

Beautiful stone gates now an affordable option Beautiful stone pillar gates are now within the price range of most home owners thanks to ground-breaking technology invented in the Wairarapa. Peter Cranshaw of Wairarapa Gates has spent the past four years perfecting a system for constructing stone gate pillars for less than half the normal cost. They are earthquake tolerant, easy to install, and include optional electronic features such as security cameras, intercoms and automatic gate opening.

The gates take three weeks to construct, can be installed in a day, and if they are damaged in an earthquake or any other accident are easy to repair, unlike other pillar gates which are unrepairable.
The steel in the gates can be made to any design and powder-coated in one of seven different colours.
The gates are suitable for residential, rural, commercial and industrial properties and are certain to increase the value of a property.
The pillars can include a letter box or various solar powered electronic devices such as security systems, intercoms,
