A century seen through Alma’s eyes Alma Smith celebrated her 100th birthday last week. ARTHUR HAWKES spent an afternoon chatting to the Masterton centenarian and heard about her fascinating life growing up in rural Wairarapa. Masterton resident Alma Smith, nee Clarke, was born in Greytown, shortly after the First World War. As a girl she was thrown straight into the Great Depression, and then experienced the chaos of the Second World War. More recently, she has seen through the covid-19 lockdown and global coronavirus pandemic. Last Wednesday, on November 4, she celebrated her 100th year, a day before the birthday of her late husband Alan. The family held a party at Dish Cafe for the centenarian last weekend, which was attended by a host of old Masterton families and close friends. Looking back on her century in Wairarapa, Alma said she remembered the “hard work” of farm life in the 1920s and 1930s, and the “terrible job of pulling turnips and cutting thistles”. As a girl, riding in the family’s Ford Model A car to town was a rare treat she thoroughly enjoyed. But there were some jobs where they couldn’t use the novelty of motor power.

... Alma said she remembered the “hard work” of farm life in the 1920s and 1930s, and the “terrible job of pulling turnips and cutting thistles”. Six milk cans a day were transported from the farm by a cart, drawn by their two horses, down to the Lower Valley Dairy Factory at Tuhitarata. In between intensive work on the farm, Alma attended dances regularly, many of which held at the Pirinoa and Kahutara halls. At age 20, in 1941, she became a postal worker, marrying Alan in 1945 as the war still raged in the European and the Pacific theatres. At first, Alma and Alan flatted on Lincoln St in Masterton, later building their own home in 1948. She recalled that the section cost just £48, with the house costing a further £1750 to build. Alma and her daughter Shirley Slykerman showed off the host of

cards she’d received on the big day – from Dame Patsy Reddy, The Queen, the McAnulty family, and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, among many, many others. “I can’t believe I’m 100. I just can’t believe it – I don’t feel it,” said Alma, who still gardens on her property in Lansdowne. Gardening was a skill she learned from her mother, who was a very keen gardener, back on the farm in Greytown when she was a girl. A few decades ago, Alma had to give up one of her favourite Continued on page 3

Sports, dancing, and travel a hallmark Continued from page 1 hobbies, tennis, where she’d play on Masterton’s grass courts regularly. Sports and dancing have clearly worked their magic on Alma, as she is still quite mobile, now using a

walker to get around. Alma said she had always had an interest in sport, and in lieu of playing it, she now watches it on her television. “I like my sport, and I’ve always followed it. I watch

any sport really.” Looking back on her life, she said she hadn’t been too aware of getting older, managing to maintain a rich life well into her older age. “The years crept up on me very gradually, I still

don’t believe it, it’s quite surreal.” Daughter Slykerman sets up video calls for Alma to speak with her family – she has two children, five grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, with

a 12th great-grandchild on the way. “We also do Zoom meetings with all the grandchildren in Australia,” Slykerman said. While Alma now stays in Masterton, she’s travelled

all over the globe during her life. “I went over to Australia a fair bit – Sydney, Brisbane – I’ve been to America, I’ve been to the islands… I’ve got around a bit, and I’ve seen a lot!” she chuckled.

Hayes weaves people, places Karen Coltman New general manager of Rangitane Tu Mai Ra Trust Board, Jo Hayes is tasked with “weaving things together – that is people, hapu, marae and communities,” Rangitane o Wairarapa iwi representative Mike Kawana said at the powhiri for Hayes, held at Te Ore Ore Marae yesterday. Hayes, 62, was interviewed for the role by the iwi trust board a month ago and was successful but could only take up the offer because, like many other former National Party MPs, she didn’t make it back to Parliament this time around. She served six and a half years as an MP and helped with the progress of the Rangitane o Wairarapa Treaty of Waitangi Settlement. She was a signatory on the Deed of Settlement signed in 2016, which included a financial redress of $32.5 million. The iwi has close connections with Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa whose settlement process is well underway and representatives were present at the welcome. Rangitane o Wairarapa and Rangitane o Tamaki nui-a-Rua is an iwi of about 3000 registered members. The Rangitane area spans from north of Dannevirke to Porangahau,

and chair of the Rangitane Tu Mai Ra Trust Jason Kerehi talked about the

treaty settlement and how positive it was for the iwi’s future. “The settlement we have

needs to be commended, and we have a very fine future to come,” he said. “It makes up for a lot of

what we have had to put up with over the years, and we will do our best with what we have now. “The greatest task for Jo is to continue to bring our iwi together and lift our potential, which we believe she has the skills to deliver.” At the powhiri, DHB chief executive Dale Oliff said she had a “vested interest” in supporting Hayes and, in particular, to support the iwi’s children and generations to come. “I am really focused on getting good outcomes for Maori in the region,” Oliff said. After her welcome, Hayes said what a great privilege it was to be in the job and to return to Masterton. She was born in Eketahuna. She and her husband have a farm in Manawatu and have raised two sons. “I bring experience in health and education and a parliamentary background that I bring to this job,” Hayes said. “I am very proud of where we have ended up, but I will set challenges for you all to stand up, and there is much work to do. “The future is in our hands.” Hayes said she couldn’t wait to get started. She planned to buy a house in Wairarapa to be near her mother, Kate Apanui, once she has settled into her new role.

Lack of workers bringing stress to farmers Grace Prior Staff shortages are starting to cause concern for farmers in the run up to summer. Skilled staff shortages are not only taking a toll on productivity but also farmer mental wellbeing, Federated Farmers dairy chair and rural health spokesperson Wayne Langford said. “We are aware of

pressure in dairy, with contractors as well,” Wairarapa Rural Support Trust wellness coordinator Sarah Donaldson said. “They’re doing the best they can. We’d like to urge farmers to come forward if they’re feeling too stretched, we can help with the practical side of things, too.” Wayne Langford, Federated Farmers dairy chair and rural health

spokesperson, said that with variable weather conditions and a lack of skilled contracting staff, farmers were being pushed to make questionable decisions, such as pushing on with mowing. These sorts of decisions ultimately effect profitability, “some of which is seen immediately and the rest later in the season when poorer

quality feed is fed to animals,” Langford said. “It’s really tough on farmers’ mental wellbeing seeing a crop they have grown sitting in the rain. “Some farmers are working really long hours and pushing the boundaries of safety to get the job done. Langford said that farmers feel particularly despondent about how they will achieve the new

Freshwater regulations under the stricter resowing dates that will apply next season. Donaldson would like to remind farmers to keep “mindful of injury risk and burnout.” According to Langford, the government has taken some steps to alleviate staffing issues by allowing time-limited border exemptions for up to 210 agricultural and

horticultural machinery operators. “The sector is still short of around 200 of these skilled staff, who can’t be trained overnight,” he said. It’s estimated there are more than 700 dairy jobs unfilled, and the shortage of vets and experienced shearers is a huge worry to livestock farmers. “For the sake of not just farms but the wider economy, we need the best people in these roles.”

Mushroom king to retire Arthur Hawkes Clive Thompson, owner of Parkvale Mushrooms, has announced he is planning to retire after growing mushrooms since he was still living with his parents in Featherston about 60 years ago. His career is one that started from small beginnings and required grit and determination to succeed. He started growing mushrooms at the Parkvale site 54 years ago. Parkvale Mushrooms now serves the domestic market with a number of tasty variations of brown mushrooms, such as the Parkvale Flat – with the cap fully opened and the gills exposed. They are popular and flavourful, with a lower moisture content making them ideal for certain styles of cooking. “I started in September 1966 – that’s just here at Parkvale – I was growing mushrooms for a few years before that too.”

His operation in Featherston, his hometown, was quite small, growing mushrooms from a purpose-built structure in his parents’ backyard. Parkvale would later grow around the Thompson family home outside of Carterton, where Thompson and wife Margaret ran the business. As the business grew, with more machinery and growing areas added, it got less practical to have a home placed slap bang in the middle of the large mushroom operation. So, the couple made the decision to move the house itself, and transported it nearby. While Thompson built the company from virtually nothing, he also built it physically. He recalled personally installing a major ventilation system, which keeps the compost aerated at the compost warehouse, which is all part of his hands-on approach. “That was a major job,

my God it was tough on my back, but it made a big difference.” While Parkvale was able to continue producing during the lockdown, their demand decreased due to the high quality of the product. Parkvale Mushrooms are a favourite of restaurants, so the restrictions on hospitality trade and cruise ships presented a real challenge – but like many of the challenges Thompson has faced, he was able to weather it. The longest he’s been away from the business is a month spent in California in the 1980s, but other than that he has more or less worked solidly as a mushroom producer. Thompson’s plans for retirement are, unsurprisingly, relaxing ones. He’s an avid reader, and said he’d spend more time reading – espionage fiction is a favourite genre. He’s also keen to spend more time with his Australian terrier, Pipi.

Free child car seat checks Arthur Hawkes Second-hand children’s car seats could be a thoughtful hand-me-down, but there’s a hidden risk if the seat is no longer physically sound. So, with the summer holidays just around the corner, the Wairarapa Road Safety Council, South Wairarapa District Council, and SeatSmart [child car seat recycling] have joined forces with a seat recycling amnesty and car seat clinic at the Featherston Community Centre at 14 Wakefield St, which started on November 1 and will run until this Friday, November 13. On the last day of the programme, for anyone who wants some advice around the fit of their seat or is unsure of the expiry date, Plunket family clinic, at 15 Wallace St, will host the Wairarapa Road Safety Council team, where people can get safety advice. Toni Bye, programme manager of SeatSmart, said that the dismantling of the old seats would be done later, by social enterprises employing people with disabilities

Photography showing launches Arthur Hawkes

Brian Connor, 69, is an art photographer and NASA scientist, born in the United States but living in Martinborough. He has been an exhibiting artist for over a decade, with a new collection coming to Heart of Arts in Carterton this Friday [November 13]. His work focuses on New Zealand landscapes and the artistic nude, which he often combines. His work has been exhibited locally and in the US, published internationally, and has received awards and nominations in international competitions, such as the International Colour Awards. Connor praised New Zealand’s “fine detail, revealed by remarkably clear air and gorgeous light”. Connor has been photographing for decades and divides his time between New Zealand, the United States, and Europe. “I was with NASA when I lived in the US, and then since coming to New Zealand, I continued to work as a consultant and contractor with NASA, right up to today.” Connor has now transitioned to digital photography, but started in film about 40 years

ago. He’s almost entirely self-taught, having taken some short courses and workshops throughout his career as an artist. His career as a scientist was an illustrious one, where he worked at the highest level as an atmospheric expert, but there was always something missing. He referenced a quote by the arctic critic Michael

F. Gibson – ‘While the logic of science, industry and commerce might be capable of satisfying the practical needs of society… there is a spiritual thirst that can be quenched only.’ “I’m speaking exactly to that point,” Connor said. “Photography has really filled a personal need for me. I just didn’t have the time before.” He said it was beneficial

to work with the same person multiple times, establishing a trust and understanding that came through in the artworks. “In most cases I work with the same person repeatedly – it hasn’t always been very easy. One of my regular models is in Massachusetts, and I’ve been working with her for eight years. “When you work with

somebody more than once you can establish a full understanding of the kinds of things you want to do.” Connor said his work was a combination of two things – beautiful landscapes and the element of nudity. “The nudes are the emotional content of the subject, the emotive impact of nudity, and the aspect of the person

in their environment. It raises the emotional stakes of any picture.” Fernanda Parodi Costa is chair of Heart of Arts, a role she operates in a voluntary capacity. “The exhibitions are monthly, so we have our calendar and normally it’s around the 10th or the 13th of the month that it changes.” Parodi Costa said that Heart of Arts was always looking for more artists, from all over Wairarapa, “from Cape Palliser all the way to lower Hawke’s Bay”. • Connor’s exhibition will run in Heart of Arts from Friday, November 13 to Wednesday, December 9.

Another example of natures amazing beauty! Dahlias have an incredible range of colours & forms and look spectacular in pots or as cut flowers.

Lucky Ducky

Have you ever taken the time to really look at the fabulous flowers of the Fuchsia? They are quite incredible— they almost look like little ballerinas or fairies and the colour contrasts are quite spectacular. Another special thing about having fuchsias in your summer garden is that they flower in the shade. Restored Wairakau Rd heals links

Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae whanau, and Carterton District Council staff and elected members celebrate the renaming of Wairakau Rd in Gladstone. PHOTO/FILE

Marcus Anselm The link between a Wairarapa marae and its urupā was restored officially last week. On Wednesday [October 28], Carterton District Councillors approved the change of old Gladstone Rd to Wairākau Rd. The renaming comes after renewed links developed between Carterton District Council and Hurunui-

o-Rangi Marae, in Gladstone. The council and marae agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding two years ago. Since then, marae whanau members have shared local history with council members and officers. The road is the latest move towards a “genuine and meaningful working relationship” between the entities, Carterton Mayor Greg Lang said. A section of new road, built in the 1950s, straightened Gladstone Rd to build a bridge

across the Ruamāhanga River. However, the construction separated the marae from its urupā, causing upset and insult to mana whenua’s cultural values. “We have been working hard to continue building a genuine and meaningful working relationship with Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae and today’s decision is another positive step forward for us all,” Lang said. “We’ve spent time with the marae this year learning more about the district’s Māori history, which has been a crucial

Hurunui-o-Rangi marae community is grateful to Carterton District Council for its empathy. “Its recognition of an ancient name, Wairākau, is a sign-post to a future that includes Māori history as a part of Carterton’s identity.” As well as formally renaming the road, the council has committed to regularly maintaining it, so it is fit for use. Lang, councillors, staff, and mana whenua received the new road signs at a council meeting at the marae. The new signs are to be installed this month. – NZLDR

step in the relationship, as we cannot move forward together until we understand where each other has come from. “It is really upsetting for our council to hear about the hurt that was caused by decisions made by past councils but we hope that by making the name Wairākau Rd official, we have shown how seriously we value our relationship with mana whenua moving forward.” Hurunui-o-Rangi representative Ra Smith said he was pleased with the decision. “In a time of empathetic leadership,

Latest Council Updates

Above the dip in the road was Waipoapoa the name for the marae.

J Wairākau Road becomes

official. Our council has renamed the road previously known as the ‘old Gladstone road’. It is now officially called Wairākau Road – a move supported by Hurunui-o-Rangi marae.

Waipoapoa as a compound word, wai or water and poapoa or entice. With the first word being the noun and the second word being the adjective in Māori sentence structure, then the meaning of Waipoapoa is the enticing water.

J You can play with your

hose from dusk til dawn. By restricting unnecessary water use between 6.30-10.30am and 5.30-7.30pm, we can avoid harsh restrictions such as a total ban. Even though we have 2 working bores, both have limited capacity and we run out of water when everyone uses it at the same time. Staggering

J Have your say – Solid Waste and Minimisation Bylaw. The three Wairarapa councils are

proposing a new bylaw that includes initiatives to reduce and manage waste. For more information and to have your say, visit cdc.govt.nz/yourcouncil/consultation/

As a waterway connected to the Taueru River, the enticing applies to eel, so the Waipoapoa can be a place of mahinga kai or food gathering.

On the ground at Holloway Street You may have noticed two new faces at our council office reception recently after our previous customer service superstar Sheree changed roles within the council. Sharon (left) and Raewyn (right) have filled this role, with Raewyn working in the mornings and Sharon in the afternoons. They may have only been

with us for three weeks, but you may recognise them, with each having ties to Carterton for almost 20 years. These two lovely ladies are ready and willing to help Carterton residents with all their enquiries whether it’s in person, over the phone or via email. Both Sharon and Raewyn are enjoying settling into their new roles and

chatting to all the locals who come in, which they agree is their favourite part of the job. Make sure you introduce yourselves to them when you’re next in the council office. And for those who are wondering where the fabulous Sue has gone, don’t worry! She’s still there, hiding from the camera behind her desk.

12 Wairarapa Midweek Opinion Wednesday, November 11, 2020 EDITORIAL

Opinion

A century passed, and the one to come Where will the world be in 100 years? That could have been a question Alma Smith, the Masterton lady who’s just turned 100, was asking herself as a young girl, during an idle moment on her Greytown farm almost a century ago. Now she knows. Would she have believed you if you told her that scores of people would be walking around, sitting on trains, park benches, in bars and cafes, their necks bent forward, all staring into a piece of lightemitting glass resting in the palm of their hand? That privacy and visibility would make such a violent swap? The more one reads about history, the more one realises that some truly terrible things have happened in the dark, hidden because of the inherent privacy in life before smartphones and the internet. Many documents related to shady operations, from every major government,

CUTIE OF THE WEEK Piece of mind

Arthur Hawkes have only been revealed to their true extent in the last 20 years. Bad things still happen, but we know about them, and that’s come packaged with an element of unnerving accountability. The billionaire Elon Musk, long advocating for intervention in the Bolivian election, joked on Twitter, ‘We will coup whoever we want! Deal with it’. Syrian president Bashar al-Assad shrugged off the global outcry when he began killing peaceful protestors. The media shines much more of a light than it did a century ago, but it’s that of a weak torch, not a cutting laser. The evil people of the world have simply put their shades on and carried on. In Alma’s day, people seemed far better at putting

the knowledge they had into practice. There was a strong sense of community. Folks helped one another at a grassroots level, particularly in rural areas – bores, dams, unionising, cooperative farming. While we’re now very aware of the mechanical movements of politics, we’re isolated in spite of it. What the next 100 years will be like seems to bring a universal lack of hope. I found Alma inspiring because she seems to have kept things in perspective, despite the war and strife she’s lived through. Gardening, tennis, dancing, family, travel – it’s easy to forget to enjoy the small things. Life is built through these moments, stacked together like a deck of cards.

14 Wairarapa Midweek Extra Wednesday, November 11, 2020 ARATOI VOICES

Extra

Annual meeting was inspiring The Friends of Aratoi AGM held recently was a sociable and inspiring evening. Director Susanna Shadbolt was the first speaker. She pointed out that the Friends’ contribution is not only measured in dollars gained by fundraising: the Friends and volunteers had contributed the equivalent of $70,000 in volunteer hours and she praised the Friends for their positivity in overcoming the challenges thrown by the year’s events. Guest speaker, artist Rhondda Greig, wove stories of concentration and determination to overcome adversity when she recounted the lives of two local artists, Hamish, who has cerebral palsy, and Jane, who was a person with Downs Syndrome. She linked Hamish to Caravaggio, who was an outlier in his society, and

who had battled through a destitute and dissolute past to become the ‘most powerfully Christian artist ever’. She displayed a copied Picasso Hamish had done at King Street Artworks, following the learners’ tradition of copying, just as Caravaggio would have done. Rhondda said that Hamish’s painting was uniquely his, however, ʺwith abstract areas of colour and changed proportions”. At Hohepa in Hawke’s Bay, Jane became a talented weaver. Rhondda showed Jane’s last work before she died, perfectly woven cloth shimmering with exquisite colour. Rhondda said these artists are often known as ‘outsider artists’ but “I would call them insider artists.” She noted the “intense focus needed because of

their birth differences” and finished with the words, “They give us something precious and original in what they created. They were triumphs of adversity. Caravaggio would have been their friend.” Simon Dixie, the Treasurer of the Friends, gave his summary of financial affairs, and although it has been a “bizarre year’’, the Friends’ finances are in good shape because of the committee’s hard work. Chairwoman Sandra Debney also stressed the positive. She said this had been a “year of two halves”, with the 2019 half being successful but because of Covid, the 2020 portion being quite different. However, the committee continued to function remotely. The result has been the successful Art & Architecture Tour, movie nights, the resumption of

openings and Little Jewels, showing at Aratoi now. After the election of the new committee, the meeting concluded with a presentation by David Moriarty of the Aratoi Board, who spoke about the solar panel project, designed to reduce Aratoi’s electricity bill by 50% when it is fully operational. Certainly this was an AGM which resonated with stories of courage and aspiration in trying times. • Visit: www. aratoi.org.nz/ support/friendsof-aratoi to find out more about joining the Friends of Rhondda Greig. Way to improve learning Midweek Musings

Tim Nelson A review published in Translational Sports Medicine has identified a way in which we can improve learning and memory. The review found that the strategy led to improved attention, concentration, learning and memory function for up to two hours after it had been applied. Reading this, you may be reminded of the film Limitless in which the character played by Bradley Cooper gets access to a pill that enables him to have the same benefits, leading to him becoming better at just about everything he sets out to do because of him increased mental capacity. Fortunately we don’t need NZT-48 [the Limitless pill]. The strategy that the review identified is available to all of us, this being aerobic exercise for two minutes to one hour, which will give individuals the same benefits. I find this incredibly liberating, as anyone can apply it, regardless of where you are or

your circumstances. You don’t need equipment or a gym; all that’s required is the willingness to commit to something that will have a markedly positive impact on your life.

Choose your response

Sir Chris Hoy is the most successful ever British Olympian, having won six golds and one silver medal as a cyclist. The last medals were won in front of a home crowd at the London Olympics; what a fantastic way to end such a brilliant career. Things may not have turned out as they did for Sir Chris. After he won his first gold medal in Athens in 2004 his specialist event was cancelled as an Olympic race. When it happened Sir Chris was incredibly disappointed and considered retiring; he had won gold and was successful by anyone’s standards. However, he decided that he would look at what other events he could compete in, utilising the skills he already had and adapting

them to compete. Two Olympic Games later Sir Chris had won five more gold medals. He could have given up when it looked like circumstances had conspired against him, thinking that things were just unfair, but he didn’t, he instead looked for other options. Life will always throw curveballs at us; placing obstacles in our paths. However, it’s not what happens to us, it’s how we respond to what happens that really counts. This may seem like glib advice, but it is an approach that gives us a sense of control when we may otherwise feel powerless.

How to declutter

In her book Slow, author Brooke McAlary shares the process she went through to declutter the stuff that was filling up her house. Brooke initially started with the overwhelming job of addressing her garage. She and her husband set about working through boxes that had never been emptied after moving to the house years before. This proved to be too daunting, they soon gave up and the job was put on hold. McAlary then tried another approach, she started by just decluttering her handbag, a much

less daunting prospect. This she was able to do, giving Brooke a sense of satisfaction. One small success led to another and over a much longer period of time she eventually achieved the goal of decluttering her household, giving her a sense of satisfaction and control. Even the garage is now empty; in fact, it’s no longer there having been removed as it was no longer needed to store the huge amount of stuff that they no longer had. The space is now a playground and garden. McAlary’s success came because she broke an

overwhelming task down into small manageable parts; a much more effective approach for facing any daunting assignment.

Maintaining standards

The Institute by Stephen King is a fantastic book; just past halfway through the tension is slowly building towards what I’m sure will be a satisfying conclusion. The story is about a secretive institute that has been running for 60 years, carrying out unethical experiments. Eventually there is a serious breach NEW! Black and the institute is

task gets carried over to the next day, with the process to be repeated. An option could be to just allocate time to the task, perhaps just 15 minutes. Once it has been started it will be so much easier to work on it next time. It’s often beginning that’s the hard part, so get started and schedule time at the beginning of the next day to continue with it. The feeling of satisfaction we get when we do something that is both challenging and important is so rewarding. To achieve the reward we need to schedule those tasks at the beginning of the day, not wait until the time is right later on, because that time won’t happen.

This 15-minute walk was found to combat negative emotions and maintain a healthy mind. Author Jay Shetty shares how on the same walk done every day in the monastery he lived in there would always be something of interest to see if you looked outwardly and really paid attention to your environment. The benefits of walking shared in the article are many, including: boosting immunity; improving memory and attention span; and reducing risk of diabetes and heart disease. Not bad for something that is so accessible, costs no money, can be done on your own or in a group, and is enjoyable!

A path to positivity

Jay Shetty shares several strategies to reframe, essentially processes for taking a more positive view on life from your own perspective. One such strategy to boost self-worth is to simply learn one new thing a day. This doesn’t need to

be something substantial, such as learning how to code or quantum mechanics [although it could be a small part of each larger concept], it could instead be just one new word in another language, or it could be the Wikipedia fact of the day. Doing this could give you a sense of achievement, perhaps the knowledge will also give you the confidence to share your learning with others, whereas previously you may have felt you had nothing of value to share. Becoming positive and developing self-esteem can be achieved by consistently taking small steps. Every step will be part of building something bigger, and before you know it you’ll have acquired something that once seemed beyond reach. • Tim Nelson is principal of Lakeview School and author of the book Small Steps for a happy and purposeful life. He endeavours to learn something new every day by reading books, listening to podcasts, and engaging with a wide range of other content.

...FOR THOSE WHO NEED ITIT

The three Wairarapa councils are proposing a new bylaw that includes initiatives to reduce and manage waste. For example:

Masterton’s population is growing and that means more demand for parking in our town centre. It wouldn’t be possible to simply build more and more carparks for everyone that wanted one - we have to start changing our behaviour like people in larger towns and cities do.

y We’re proposing that managers of large events and construction firms building high-value projects develop waste management plans. We’ll work with these groups to help get them started.

1. Treat all the pets in your household. Even if the pets don’t have any contact with each other they all need treating to stop flea eggs being dropped around your house and property. If visitors bring their pets with them, make sure they have been flea treated before they arrive. 2. Make sure to use the right dose and repeat at the right frequency. There are many flea products available these days and they have varying lengths of time that they are effective for. Some products last 4 weeks, others 3 months or 6 months. Make sure you know how often to use the product you choose. Once the product

3. Treat all year round for best results. Treating all pets, all year round helps to prevent a build-up of flea pupae in the environment which can lead to large numbers of fleas hatching out once warm weather occurs. Fleas can still hatch during winter if the conditions are right but their life cycle may take a bit longer which is why we tend to see less fleas in winter. 4. If you have a lot of fleas then treat your environment as well. Vacuuming can help remove eggs from carpets and floors. Flea bombs help kill eggs and larvae. Pupae are fairly indestructible so your best option is to treat your pets so when the pupae hatch, the adult flea dies once in contact with your pet and no new eggs will be laid. 5. Be patient. If you are still seeing fleas after you treat your pet, this doesn’t mean the treatment isn’t working. It can take 2-3 months to remove all the flea eggs, larvae and pupae from the environment even if no new eggs are laid. Dying fleas are much slower so if the fleas you are seeing on your treated pet are easy to catch this means the product is working.

KITTYCAT REHOMING

Farm/barn homes needed Here at KittyCat Rehoming we are in urgent need of outdoor homes for desexed wild born cats. These cats are unsocial to humans and are best suited to live on a farm, horse stable, barn, or other suitable outdoor location. A “barn cat” is an unsocialised or timid cat that is better suited to life as a farm/working cat than as a family pet. These are often stray cats that are not socialised with people that we have been asked to relocate. Although we try to socialise and adopt where we can, some cats just prefer their own company or

the company of other animals. We believe these cats still deserve to have a nice life where they can be cared for and not expected to return the favour with affection. Our barn placement cats will be desexed, vaccinated, de-flead, wormed and microchipped before they come to you. We will help with advice for integrating them into their new territory or may be able to loan you a crate for this purpose. There is a small adoption fee of $80 and we provide a free humane trap. All we ask is that you provide

food, water, shelter, vet care when required and are aware and knowledgable of animal welfare laws. A farm, lifestyle block or rural property is ideal. Sometimes barn cats end up so comfortable with their new people that they become social enough to pet or handle, but this is dependent on the individual cat. If you would like to offer a placement to help a barn cat, we would love to hear from you. Please email us at kittycatrehoming@gmail.com or text/call [0204] 335-463.

FLEA LIFECYCLE –only the adult flea lives on your pet, the rest of the life cycle (egg, larvae and pupae) all occur in the environment. This is important to know when trying to figure out how to control fleas and how your pet might be picking up new fleas. Fleas can lay up to 500 eggs each and these slippery eggs will fall off when your pet moves.

stops working, flea numbers can multiply rapidly again. Also make sure you are using the right size product for your pet – we are happy for you to bring your pet in to be weighed if you are unsure.

We’re well into spring now and summer is just around the corner. We love the warm weather and the sunshine this brings but not the flea explosion that can occur. So if your pets are not currently being treated for fleas it is time to get this sorted but there are some important points to remember.

The Wairarapa Singers are preparing for their concert of Christmas music. This is the first concert the choir has been able to perform all year and they are raring to go. It is a scientific fact that singing is good for your health and your soul so this concert is very important to the choir. New Zealand is one of very few countries in the world where choral singing is currently permitted and many choirs around the world have been disbanded completely. Early start to see meteors The Leonid meteors can be seen this week if you are keen enough to get outside between 3 and 4am. The peak day is next Tuesday, but they should be seen any morning from Saturday onwards. The meteors are debris left behind by the passage of comet Tempel-Tuttle, and Earth passes through this debris field every year around this time. The constellation of Leo rises around 3am, heralded by the bright star Regulus in the northeast. The meteors appear to come from a region within the constellation, although obviously that is simply a line of sight. They will appear to shoot in all directions from a point which is called the radiant. Unfortunately for us in New Zealand, the eastward shooters will zoom across the horizon almost immediately. By the time Leo rises sufficiently above the horizon, the sky will be too light to see most of them. 4.30 will probably be too light to see most of those that shoot away from the horizon, so you probably have about 90 minutes to see them after 3am. In reality the meteors are travelling in parallel. It is simply the perspective, like driving through a

three or four minutes. If you can make a date for this time in year 2031, you will see many more. Why?

Hospice Wairarapa Remembrance Service Te Kowhai, 59 Renall Street, Masterton 4pm to 5pm, Wednesday 2nd December 2020 We are aware that as Christmas approaches, this can be a difficult time for families and friends who have lost a loved one. To remember them, we would like to invite you, and those close to you, to a Christmas Remembrance Sevice. This service will be led by Rev. Elizabeth Snowsill.

The comet progenitor of this debris cloud orbits the sun every 33 years and when it is closest to the sun, the sun’s power melts more of the comet’s ices and consequently more of the crumbly rocky material that makes up the comet’s body is released. The last great shower

23

was 1998. The greatest in the modern era was 1833 when 100,000 meteors per hour were reported in the USA. Now, that would be something more like a snowstorm. But you never know. There are areas of the cloud of cometary debris that are denser in particles, and this is totally unpredictable. In any case, just to see a few meteors can be exhilarating. These are fast moving shooters, over 70km/sec, and can leave persistent trails due to ionisation of the gases in the upper atmosphere. Even if you have to wait a few minutes to see a meteor, there will be a spectacular sky at that time of the morning. There’s no moon, so the stars will be in your face. From south to overhead, the three brightest stars in the whole sky – Alpha Centauri, Canopus and Sirius – are arrayed, and the stunning constellation of Orion dominates the high northern sky. Across all of these, the Milky Way drapes its misty band of a 100 billion stars. Enjoy. Next week: Let’s look at asteroid impact theory.

A SUMMER OF COLOURS AT SHALARI It is going to be a hot start to summer, according to NIWA. And Shalari Boutique Lingerie & Swimwear in Greytown is ready. “There are still lots of product coming in, with good colour options for the warmer weather to come,” says owner Tina Dunlop. Tina likes to compare lingerie with jewellery. “You only wear jewellery you like. Similarly, you should get pleasure out of the lingerie you wear. “It’s a practical item of wear but it’s also an opportunity to have a bit of fun, enjoy a bit of colour therapy, or go a little crazy in your colours.” Health is not a topic that often comes up when the subject is lingerie, but for Tina, it is one of the most important aspects of it. Her knowledge is partly based on her experiences as a top athlete, representing New Zealand in netball, Auckland in tennis and winning the New Zealand body building national championship.” Wearing correctly fitting lingerie has a huge impact on a women’s

physical well-being, Tina says. “Lingerie is about more than just aesthetics. Badly fitting lingerie will inhibit the flow of the circulatory system, especially the lymphatic system which is a vital part of the immune system. Your body is designed to work best with correct posture and movement.” “I enjoy educating ladies on why it is important to find the right bra to match the way they are made, instead of one-size-fits-all. “You have to wear lingerie every day and nothing fits as close to the body, so it needs to be precise.” Tina and her staff devote much of their time to personal fittings. Customers’ details are kept on a “fitting card” so that when they come back they don’t have to start from square one again. Choosing a quality, well-fitting bra is “the world’s quickest makeover”,p74 Tina says.

PEEK @ PUKAHA

T-u-T-U-R-U-A-T-U I-N S-P-A-C-E! Dear friends, The best band in the entire world has to be Lynyrd Skynyrd. It just goes without saying. It should therefore be no surprise that our rangers’ favourite song is Skynyrd’s 1974 classic ‘Freebird’. Because if there is one thing that our rangers love, it’s seeing native birds be free. Legendary frontman Ronnie Van Zant [what a name!] croons ‘I’m as free as a bird now’ and ends with ‘won’t you fly high, free bird, yeah’. Classic. Reminds us of a story about a high-flying wee bird that’s actually not that high-flying but is flying high thanks to some awesome people. Confused? Here let us explain. The tūturuatu or shore plover is a bird we know well. We’ve been trying to

restore their numbers for several years now. They got as low as 150 individuals but now thanks to captive breed for release programmes like Pukaha’s, their wild numbers now hover around 250. It’s not many. So how does a low flying shore dwelling bird that’s at severe risk of extinction fly high? Well thanks to Air NZ really. You see they help transport tūturuatu between some of the breeding centres so their gene pool can remain diverse. So actually a shore plover has flown to 29,000 feet albeit in an Air NZ 737. They travel in their own special cage that gets strapped to the cabin seat. They even have their own boarding pass in the name of SHORE PLOVER. It’s very cute. So next time you are flying have a look around the seats for a heavy-

duty wooden box with all sorts of barcodes and travel stamps. It could be a one of NZ’s native birds enroute to a new home. But wait. It gets higher. In September, Rocketlab, who launch space rockets on the Mahia Peninsula

designed a limited-edition Race To Space mission patch of the shore plover with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to DOC’s tūturuatu protection programme. These super cool patches have been selling hotter than moon rocks to aliens! They sold out quicker than you could recant the muppet chant of “P-I-G-S I-N S-P-A-C-E!” with “T-U-T-U-R-U-A-T-U I-N S-P-A-C-E!”, but rumour has it they may be stitching some more. Keep an eye on https://shop.rocketlab. co.nz/ While the tūturuatu hasn’t flown into space yet, we reckon that thanks to Rocketlab it’s getting pretty close! If you’d like to help the shore plover fly

higher than it currently is, vote for it to be Bird of the Year right here; https://www. birdoftheyear.org.nz/. You have until November 15 to get your vote in! Stay free and fly high everyone, The Pūkaha Rangers. Water storage in Wairarapa FAQs

Illustration of reservoir Wairarapa Water Limited is investigating the development of a water resevoir in the hills north west of Masterton, called the Wakamoekau Community Water Storage Scheme. The resevoir will provide water for the region in dry months and will meet environmental, social, cultural and economic needs of the community. The project is part of building a vibrant and resilient Wairarapa for generations to come and is supported by the Government through the Provincial Development Unit. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in contact: info@wwl.net.nz

What is water security? This means that as a community we make sure we have water stored somewhere to be available for when it runs out. How do we get water security? By harvesting and storing water when it is plentiful, so that it is available when we need it most. Why does the Wairarapa need water security? The Wairarapa is at the extreme end of climate change predictions, with significantly hotter temperatures and increase in drought expected in the future, according to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA).

How will water storage help the Wairarapa community? If we have stored water we can use it when the dry weather hits us each year. It will top up the rivers when they become a trickle in dry weather, support towns and businesses, and provide water to farmers so they can grow our food. Will water storage lead to more dairy cows in the Wairarapa? No, WWL has a loan from the Government and as part of that arrangement water can’t be used for further dairy intensification.

Odd friendships endured

29

Comment – Pick ‘n Mix

Graeme Burnard In my last column I said I would share with you some unusual friendships that endured. Ella Fitzgerald can thank Marilyn Munroe for her singing career that became legendary. The Mocambo nightclub in Hollywood which was the “in” place at the time, would not book Fitzgerald as they didn’t think she was a drawcard. Munroe who was already very famous, and a fan of Ella’s, promised to book a table in the front row of the nightclub if Fitzgerald was booked. And so it came to pass. The two became great friends. Fitzgerald saw Munroe as a woman way ahead of her time. Helen Keller and Mark Twain met in 1894. She was 14 years old and he was in his 50s. Their friendship endured until Twain’s death 16 years later. Keller said that Twain had a great intuition about how it felt to be blind and deaf and would often share his stories with her and allow her to read them from touching his lips. Twain introduced Keller to wealthy oil industrialist

Henry Huttleston Rogers who became her benefactor and paid for her education at Radcliffe College. In 1904 Keller graduated and became the first deaf blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. One of the oddest friendships was between Larry Flynt who made his fortune in the pornography industry and Jerry Falwell, a conservative reverend who preached moral values. The two were even embroiled in a $50 million lawsuit which was immortalised in the movie The people vs. Larry Flynt. It wasn’t until a decade after the lawsuit that the two men came face-toface for the first time and despite having opposite views on morality, religion and politics, they discovered they had a lot in common. And so began a friendship with regular visits between each other enjoying long philosophical discussions, sharing family stories and even discussing dietary tips with each other. My mother had a very special friendship which

Ella Fitzgerald, left, and Marilyn Monroe attending a jazz session at the Tiffany Club in Hollywood. PHOTO/GETTY IMAGES

was quite unusual. She was an exceptional crafts person, especially needlework and some of her work was exhibited around the country. After a newspaper article about her, she received a letter from a woman saying how much she enjoyed the article and complimenting my mother’s work. Ma wrote back and over the next 20 years or so they wrote to each other weekly and became great friends

and confidants. The odd thing about the friendship was that they never met despite the fact they lived in the same town. At Christmas, I would drive to Margaret’s house and exchange gifts between the two. When I got home, I was never allowed to tell my mother what I had seen. Ma had an image of her friend in her mind and she didn’t want that to change and she didn’t want the

mechanics of the friendship to change if they ever met. And she was painfully shy too which was a big factor. What was even stranger was that Ma had to drive further to post the letter than she would have had to visit her friend. Oprah Winfrey said “Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down”.

people who mean business After years of running a successful enterprise over the hill, Wayne has introduced his business, TGT Property Maintenance, to Wairarapa.

TILES:

And thanks to an experienced and highly professional team, personable and reliable service, and competitive prices, TGT is “cornering the market”. TGT has been based in Wellington for the past 10 years - and Wayne opened a Wairarapa chapter when he relocated to Masterton in November last year.

Our home is our most valuable asset and flooring is the hardest working area of our homes, so it makes sense to choose flooring that lasts the test of time and does not require ongoing maintenance. Life is too busy for short term solutions! At Tile Warehouse we believe it is all about you. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide products that meet our customers’ desire for quality and design, all at an affordable price. Being the only dedicated specialist tile store in the Wairarapa, with the largest tile range in the region you are spoilt for choice. We can recommend local professional tilers and now do deliveries of tiles throughout the Wairarapa.

The business offers a range of al fresco maintenance services for commercial and residential properties: such as house painting, fence and deck repairs, water blasting, soft washing, and yard work. Wayne aims to keep TGT’s prices affordable - and doesn’t charge a deposit for maintenance work, only accepting payment once the job is complete. He says he has enjoyed meeting and working with TGT’s new Wairarapa clients - and thanks his customers for their support and patience during COVID-19. “We have met some lovely people, and made some great connections,” he says. To book a job with TGT, call Wayne on 021 133 0877, or email waynecross.tgt@gmail.com

Three staff who lost their jobs when Water Mart Wairarapa went into liquidation last month have been employed by new owners Ngaire and Jeremy Mansfield who bought the company last month. The husband and wife team put an offer in to buy Water Mart back in 2017 but after doing some research on the company, withdrew their offer. The couple has taken over the Water Mart client database but ditched the name. Ngaire said she talked with the staff she wanted to re-employ, and all were pleased to have Straight Flush as the new name for the company. The Mansfields own Straight Flush Plumbing Ltd, which is based in Ngauranga in Wellington. Ngaire said she and her husband intended to rebuild the business and were planning to take on an apprentice when they could. The couple has three children, one with special needs and managing autism and he is cared for in Hohepa, Hawkes’ Bay. “We have a strong interest in disability issues,” Ngaire said. “We drive up to Hawke’s

Bay to be with our son regularly and so will be in Wairarapa frequently to maintain a supportive presence for our staff in the region.” Jeremy is a certifying plumber gasfitter with more than 25 years in the industry, holding past roles on the executive of Wellington Master Plumbers. Ngaire has a background in banking and administration, serving nine years at National Bank before starting Straight Flush. She has more recently finished an appointed director’s role with

New Zealand Plumbing World Co-operative and is a member of the Institute of Directors and Entrepreneur’s Organisation. Straight Flush won NZ Master Plumber of the Year in 2014, and were finalists in both the Wellington Gold Awards [2015, 2018] and the Wellington Regional Business Awards [2016, 2019]. Water Mart contact numbers have been transferred to Straight Flush Wairarapa. • The most reliable email to use is: wairarapa@ straightflush.co.nz

Rural difference likely There are indications the new government will support rural economic development more than it did before the election. This will happen because its relationship with the Green Party has been scaled back. Comments from Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor, pictured, suggest this is likely, though he is at pains not to overstate the case. O’Connor said it was important to protect the environment, but New Zealand also needed economic development. Several economic projects were blocked or delayed in the previous three years, often on the word of the Green Party’s Eugenie Sage, in her roles

of Minister of Conservation and Land Information. In one case, she blocked an expansion project of the Oceania Gold Mine at Waihi, though rival Ministers later overturned this. In another case, she blocked Malaysianowned Ernslaw One from converting 630 hectares of sheep and beef land into forestry. Another ruling put limits on expansion plans of Oji Fibre Solutions, which runs mills at Kinleith and Kawerau. Many of these decisions were made in her capacity as Minister for Land

Information, which governs the Overseas Investment Office. That role has been taken over by O’Connor, who is also Minister for Trade and Export Growth, Biosecurity, and Rural Communities. He was asked what difference his appointment as Minister for Land Information would make to these sort of decisions. “I am a different person and I represent the Labour Party and we have always worked positively with people in the High Country and in all areas where land has some influence.” O’Connor said he had strong bottom lines in

terms of environmental impacts from ventures such as mining and farming. “But if people can mitigate any of those impacts, then we should get on – we need economic development, we need jobs, we need export

income,” he said. “I have always tried to be pragmatic, but I am also ambitious for our country, for the environment and for people who commit money to our businesses to get a better return.” — rnz.co.nz

Furlong Cup opener rained CRICKET

Chris Cogdale

Sport

The weather was the only winner as Highmark Homes Wairarapa’s Furlong Cup match against Taranaki was washed out on Sunday. Heavy rain overnight on Saturday and frequent showers throughout Sunrday morning meant that conditions at Queen Elizabeth Park Oval were not suitable for play. The game was evenly poised when the game was called off at about 1.30pm on Sunday, with Taranaki 47-3 in reply to Wairarapa’s first innings of 176-7 declared. The first day’s play was also disrupted because of a damp pitch from the covers sweating overnight on Friday. Once play did get under way at 1pm, batting was always going to be tricky on the slow soft pitch, and the Wairarapa batsmen struggled to score freely, only managing a run rate of 2.67 throughout their 66-over innings. Opener Robbie Anderson led the way for the home side with a patient half-century. The left hander’s 51 came from 121 balls, and he hit six fours. Anderson and Jared van Deventer [27] combined in a 62run second-wicket partnership after the early loss of John McKenzie. Anderson and Andy Dodd [15] added 35 for the third wicket, before Anderson was caught

by Ben Frewin off the bowling of medium-pacer Davis Mills. The only other partnership of substance was a fifth-wicket stand of 51 between Jaco Vorster [18] and Brock Price, who was left 44 not out in his last match for the province before he headed to Australia this week. Price’s innings was a mix of patience and his usual aggression, hitting seven fours in the 86 balls he faced. Captain Gordon Reisima’s bold declaration paid off almost immediately with debutant Sebastian Lauderdale caught behind for three in the second over off the bowling of medium-fast bowler Ethan Childs. Fellow quick Stefan Hook then had former Central Stag Dean Robinson caught at first slip by Reisima. That was followed by some slick work by wicketkeeper Jack Forrester, who took a superb leg side catch standing up to medium pacer Peter Sigvertsen to dismiss Shaun Sullivan without scoring and to have Taranaki struggling at 36-3. Lefthander Liam Muggeridge was the only shining light for the visitors, ending on 36 not out. Both teams take three points for the abandoned game, while Wairarapa earned two bonus points and Taranaki picked up three bonus points.

Giants scored four runs in their last turn at bat to pip Tawa 6-4 in a thrilling Intercity Premier Three clash at Ngatitoa Domain, Paremata. After a lethargic batting effort, Giants finally clicked in the top of the seventh inning, to bring home four runs and retain their unbeaten start to the competition. Chris Feary started the momentum, with a safe hit to take him to first base. Jordan Waitere smashed a powerful ground hit to the fence to bring Feary home, and then scored off a safe hit from Willie Waitere, who also ran home to give Giants the lead. Nico Broughton completed the scoring, leaving it to veteran pitcher Tony Nixon to close out the victory. Nixon used all his experience to tie down the Tawa batters and secure a valuable victory. Feary said the team had a real off day and it wasn’t until their last turn at bat that they managed to generate any momentum. Meanwhile, strong

pitching by Renee England led Giants Blue to a convincing 16-2 win over Hutt Valley Dodgers Divas in their first game back in the Hutt Valley Women’s Major B Championship. However, play of the day went to Tayler Riwai-Couch, who took a catch in the outfield and then threw to the home plate to run out the runner. Giants Reds also kicked off their Major B Women’s campaign with a 15-12 win over Wellington Area Sports Club.
