Voting: Who, what, and where Election day is this Saturday from 9am to 7pm and Midweek reporter ELI HILL has collated the need to know information about voting in Wairarapa including the candidates, the referendums, and the history of the seat. Signs, street corner meetings, and eight likely candidates. Should cannabis be legalised? And should we allow assisted dying? Wairarapa voters have plenty to decide. The candidates standing for the Wairarapa seat are National’s Mike Butterick,

Third time lucky for club Eli Hill Scrabble strategists and word lovers will have the chance to play competitively and share their love of the game from the end of October due to the launch of the Masterton Scrabble Club. Despite setbacks – including its launch being cancelled twice because of covid-19, club organiser Sue McRae said there is good interest in the club. “I’ve been out of the scrabble scene for a while, but I used to play in a club in Wellington. “When I started living here in Wairarapa I started looking through the club lists online, looking for a scrabble club. The last recorded story about scrabble was in 2007 or something.” So McRae thought she’d have a go at setting up a club. “And everything was going swimmingly, I approached the library and they said ‘Oh we’ve just built this lovely learning centre next door’ – that was in April and we were going to do it in May, then of course covid-19 happened.” In August she had another go at trying to set the club up. “Then of course we went back to level two and the library decided they weren’t running

any events.” Prior to the lockdown she’d set up flyers around Masterton and found that about 25 people were interested. “The funny thing I found was through lockdown I rang a few people who were interested in it… and because there was no law
against playing in your home I invited these strangers into my home. “Half a dozen of them showed up and we played scrabble, so we’ve been meeting every Thursday night at my house which isn’t ideal but at least we get to play scrabble.” The people who attended the sessions at
her house hadn’t played scrabble in clubs before and McRae said they went through what she calls ‘seven stages of denial’ when she showed them her two and three letter word lists. “A lot of people say no, these can’t be words! Shock, horror, but eventually they learn
to play with them. “One woman has been coming all the way from outside of Martinborough – she drives 45 minutes on the backroads and brings her dog to my house to play scrabble – because she just loves the game and there’s nowhere else to play scrabble.” The Masterton Scrabble Club will be affiliated to the New Zealand Association of Scrabble Players [NZASP] and become one of about 30 clubs in the country. Being part of the NZASP means players will have access to great tips and advice from expert Kiwi players, plus free word lists, carefully vetted by the World English Scrabble Players Association. This eliminates any arguments about which words are acceptable. A list of meanings for some of the more obscure words will be on hand for anyone interested. • The Masterton Scrabble club will launch on Wednesday, October 28 from 2-5 pm, at the Masterton District Library, 54 Queen St, Masterton. • The plan is to play weekly, if people can’t come to the launch they can contact Sue McRae on 027 4490 601 or sue.mcrae.nz@gmail. com.
Time for Pasiÿ ka voice to be heard Gianina Schwanecke It’s time for the Wairarapa Pasifika community to have their say in decisions impacting them, a local Tokelauan advocate says. Luther Toloa, who arrived in Wairarapa as a 12-year-old boy from Tokelau, hoped to change this through the formation of the Pasifika Wairarapa Council. The group was created in the first two weeks of the country entering Level
4 lockdown to assess the needs of the local community. “The covid-19 pandemic just highlighted the gap,” Toloa said. “We need the community stakeholders to have some understanding of the needs of Pasifika people here in Wairarapa. “One of the biggest concerns is that there are decisions being made about us here without prior consultation.” Toloa said local Pasifika
needed a bigger role in decision making relating to health, education, immigration, housing, and employment matters. “For our Pasifika people, there’s a commonality throughout the issues.” A big part of that related to language and Pasifika culture and ways of doing things. He acknowledged part of it might be the culture in which many Pasifika were raised to be humble and accommodating but said
the community needed to be more vocal. A common mistake made by policymakers was bracketing the needs of the Pasifika people in rural communities with those in bigger cities, such as South Auckland, the Hutt Valley, or Porirua, he said. He said it was also important to make sure the data used to make decisions was right from the get-go. “We started off [approaching] churches
but then we realised that many people didn’t belong to churches or community groups.” The majority of Wairarapa’s 3000 or so strong Pasifika population had links to Samoa, but the Fijian community was also growing, he said. He hoped that the council, which is still in the stage of being formally established, would create a “one stop shop” for the region’s Pasifika community.
Singing in Featherston Eli Hill
A difficult year for the Featherston Gentlemen Singers hasn’t dampened their voices. Covid-19 and social distancing have meant that the choir has not had as much singing time together as usual and their biennial concert with Japanese Chor Farmer in September was put on hold, perhaps until late 2021. However, keen to sing in public again, a slightly truncated choir will join the Songbirds, an allfemale group of nine years standing, in two concerts, one in the Kiwi Hall, Featherston and the other at Rosewood Chapel, Masterton. As in 2019 when they first debuted together in the Greytown Town Hall, both choirs will present an eclectic mix of songs as well as some combined numbers. These range from music theatre, to traditional Maori, to folk and pop with some interesting and varied settings. October also sees the Featherston Gentlemen Singers’ 16th birthday. As they enter their seventeenth year there has been some discussion about a name change to the Songbeards – beard growing being yet another unexpected result of covid. Mercifully the jury is still out on this one. • The Featherston Gentlemen Singers in Concert with the Songbirds. • Kiwi Hall, Featherston, Saturday October 10, 4pm • Rosewood Chapel, Queen St, Masterton, Sunday October 11, 4pm • Tickets $10 • For more information call Christine 027 340 1719 or Marguerite 021 441193.

STICKMAN’S WEEKLY SPECIALS
ELECTIONS
Voting closes at 7pm Saturday Continued from page 1 was a lead negotiator for the Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tamaki Nui a Rua [Treaty Settlement] Trust. McAnulty attended Chanel College, where he was head boy in 2002. He spent seven years as a volunteer with local fire brigades, and remains a board member of Wings over Wairarapa and Golden Shears. He is also a former trustee of the Masterton Community Trust. Wade-Brown served as the mayor of Wellington, from 2010 - 2016 and was an elected councillor for 14 years. She has also been a teacher and an IT programmer. If previous elections are anything to go by, the three candidates with the best shot at the electorate are National’s Butterick, Labour’s McAnulty, and New Zealand First’s Mark. McAnulty and Mark have contested the seat three times each, both times receiving the second and third highest number of votes, while Butterick is taking over the National Party ticket from Alastair Scott who held the seat for the last two terms. Like her predecessor John Hart, Green Party candidate Wade-Brown is aiming for people’s party votes – not their candidate votes which avoids ‘vote splitting’ of left-leaning voters between the Greens and Labour. Wade-Brown has said she would vote for McAnulty. Looking back at the previous two elections – 2017 and 2014 – McAnulty and Mark will need a few extra votes if they wish to take the seat from National hands. In 2014, National’s Alastair Scott took 43.9 per cent of the vote, while McAnulty was on 25.57 per cent, and Mark took 23.35 per cent. Three years later, McAnulty took a much greater share of the votes – with 34.2 per cent of the vote – just under 3000 votes below Scott’s 41.4 per cent share. Mark received just under
1000 votes less than the previous election and saw his share drop to 19.44 per cent. One big issue McAnulty faces is his perch on the Labour list – McAnulty is number 26 which based on the way Labour is polling means he’s likely to get into Parliament on the list alone. Some, including Ron Mark, have argued that it’s better to elect someone else to the Wairarapa seat so that Wairarapa has more representatives in Parliament. McAnulty addressed this at the Times-Age Candidates Debate last week where he said he’d have far greater influence as the electorate MP rather than as a list MP. “Wairarapa has enjoyed the fact that we’ve had more than one MP this past term, I totally acknowledge that, but what list MPs know to be true is that no matter how relentless you are in your advocacy, it never carries as much weight as it does when you’re an electorate MP. “Having an effective electorate MP in government is going to deliver much more for this region than having two list MPs.” While Mark sits at number five on New Zealand First’s list – his party has dropped as low as one percent in recent polls. Mark and leader Winston Peters have downplayed the importance of the polls – with Peters claiming their voter base has never been fairly represented by them. Even so, if the party fails to get an electorate, or fails to clear five per cent of the votes, getting Wairarapa’s seat could be Mark’s only chance at getting back into Parliament. Butterick is fresh to politics, and has been slightly less polished in the debates than other veteran candidates – although he seems to have a fair grasp on his party’s policy. The question, come Saturday, will be whether Butterick is able to hold Scott’s lead over the other candidates. Since 1946, the Wairarapa seat has been traditionally

Should it come into force, the End of Life Choice Act 2019 will give people with a terminal illness the option of requesting assisted dying. ‘Assisted dying’ means a person’s doctor or nurse practitioner giving them medication to relieve their suffering by bringing on death; or the taking of medication by the person to relieve their suffering by bringing on death. In order to be eligible for assisted dying, the person must be aged 18 years or over, be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand, suffer from a terminal illness that’s likely to end their life within six months, have a significant and ongoing decline in physical capability, experience unbearable suffering that cannot be eased, and be able to make an informed decision about assisted dying. A person would not be eligible to ask for assisted dying if the only reason they give is that they are suffering from a mental disorder or mental illness, or have a disability of any kind, or are of advanced age.
The Cannabis Legalisation and Control referendum will give people the opportunity to vote on whether the recreational use of cannabis should become legal. It sets out a way for the government to control and regulate cannabis. The bill would allow people aged 20 or over to: buy up to 14 grams of dried cannabis [or its equivalent] per day only from licensed outlets, enter licensed premises where cannabis is sold or consumed, consume cannabis on private property or at licensed premises, grow up to two plants, with a maximum of four plants per household, and share up to 14 grams of dried cannabis [or its equivalent] with another person aged 20 or over.

Students trade schoolbooks for hammers Erin Kavanagh-Hall Two Makoura College students and aspiring tradies have ended their final year at secondary school on a high note – landing apprenticeships with an exciting new construction enterprise. Hoping to eventually start a career in building, William Flutey-Tapata and Diamond Karaitiana, both 18, started doing weekly work experience with Cameron Construction, based in Masterton, earlier in the year. In September, both boys were offered the opportunity to join the Cameron Construction team full-time – working as apprentices to owner/ manager Mason Cameron and his staff, and training towards becoming qualified builders. Cameron Construction is one of the leading builders of energy efficient homes in the region and is currently working on building tiny homes in Masterton as an antidote to the housing shortage. William and Diamond were introduced to Mason through Makoura’s Gateway programme, which arranges work experience aligned with students’ career aspirations, capabilities, and interests. Both boys enrolled in

the programme at the start of Year 13 as one of their NCEA Level 3 subjects, and expressed a desire to work in construction. Fionna Omundsen, futures administrator and workplace coordinator, made contact Wairarapawide for potential employers. “We emailed a whole lot of local builders, and Mason got back to us right away,” Fionna said. “Willie and Diamond are definitely the physical,
practical, hands-on types – so it was perfect.” The boys started their work experience at Cameron Construction just before lockdown in March, and continued once Alert Levels dropped – even working throughout their school holidays. After several months in the builders’ yard, they decided an apprenticeship was the next step to pursue for their futures. “We encouraged them to approach Mason, and
ask directly if he’d be able to take them on,” Therese King, Makoura futures teacher, said. “Diamond took the advice and made contact. In the adult world, you have to take matters into your own hands, and put yourself forward.” When Therese and Fionna found out about the boys’ job offers, they were thrilled. “We’re so pleased for them – they’re polite, charming and hardworking
young men, who have grown hugely through this experience,” Therese said. It’s awesome when we can organise successful work placements through Gateway – but it’s the icing on the cake when our kids end up employed at the end.” Mason himself has been a builder in Wairarapa for the past 14 years, and set up Cameron Construction in 2017. Mason is very passionate about training apprentices, and making sure young people have opportunities to enter the building industry. “I did my building apprenticeship during the recession. After that, no-one wanted to take on apprentices – so we ended up with a shortage of builders. “It’s important we invest in young people and their training if we want to keep the trades alive.” Mason said William and Diamond have helped out with a wide range of jobs, including new builds, renovations, general handyman work, and – their personal favourite – demolitions. As well as their on-thejob training, the boys have now signed up with BCITO – through which they will complete a variety of educational standards and, eventually, qualify
as builders. Mason said he sees “huge potential” in William and Diamond, and is excited to see their careers progress. “They’re easy to teach, and keen to learn. They’ve fitted in well, and are a great part of the crew – very happy, positive young guys.” “I’ve really enjoyed it so far – we learn something new everyday, and the team are really supportive,” Diamond said. “Once I qualify as a builder, I’d love to have my own company some day.” As of next year, Makoura College is partnering with Cameron Construction and Project Manaaki to build and supply tiny homes for the homeless shelter in Masterton, and for local families in need of extra space. Each Monday, 10 Year 13 students will work on site at Makoura with Mason and Practical Technology teacher Tori Forrester constructing tiny homes, and completing their Level 3 BCITO standards through Gateway. The futures team at Makoura welcome contact from employers across all industries who are interested in supporting young people through Gateway placements, work experience or apprenticeship opportunities.

Second watchtower destroyed Aleyna Martinez The second watchtower to burn down at Henley Lake in less than two years has left locals “gutted”, including Masterton fire station officer, Mike Cornford. Attending the blaze at about 4am on Saturday morning, he said the fire did not take long to put out once they were there. One fire truck attended with a water tanker, but the state the tower was in when fire and emergency staff arrived suggested it had been burning for about two hours before anyone noticed it, Cornford said. “There was not a lot left – it was pretty well burnt out,” he said. He said the fire was being treated as suspicious. “Unfortunately, that is the second one that I’ve been to that’s been burned to the ground now,” Cornford said. In December 2018, Masterton fire services were called to a similar incident where another “iconic watchtower” at Henley Lake was burned down in the early hours of a Saturday morning near the back of the Henley Men’s Shed. That watchtower had been rebuilt in 2006 after being burned down in 2004.
Just a lovely community facility that’s been destroyed by vandalism.
Before the blaze.
After. Fire and emergency suggested the fire had been alight for a few hours before anyone noticed it.
It was originally built in 1998. Cornford said the council had not yet rebuilt that watchtower, and if the community lost the use of it at the lake, it would be a shame. “Kids can climb up it, it’s two stories high and it’s great for people out there walking – it’s just a great
community facility really. “I’m gutted because I just had my grandson and granddaughter up there three weeks ago. “Just a lovely community facility that’s been destroyed by vandalism,” Cornford said. Masterton councillor Gary Caffell said he would be “pushing hard for it to
be rebuilt”. “To me it was a landmark of Henley Lake and just such a unique part of it.” “That particular tower, with grand kids and kids, they just love scooting up and down there,” Grange said. Andrea Jackson, manager of community facilities and activities at

GARDEN
YARN
with
growing
Spring is a fabulous time to be out in the garden. The days are getting longer and warmer and the soil temperatures rise which means new growth is popping up everywhere! New growth also means that plants are pulling all the resources they can out of the ground they live in. This takes up a lot of energy & nutrients and it’s up to us to replenish these nutrients for them so they can grow with vigour. Well fed and watered plants are healthier, and healthy plants fight pests & disease better (just like humans). What you feed them also makes a big difference - there are fertilisers that are specifically designed for specific plants (ie, acid loving, nitrogen or lime boosting etc). There are also different ‘release types’ of fertiliser, such as Slow Release or Controlled Fertiliser: These are safe to use in containers or in the ground. If you want to buy one product that suits almost any kind of planting then ican 24-Plus Slow Food is our recommendation.
Liquid fertilisers are fast acting and can be used as a foliar feed or can be watered into the roots. You will find specific ones for things such as tomatoes, houseplants, citrus etc, or you will find that seaweed and/or fish liquid food are very popular as well and have many benefits. They increase the overall health of both the plant and the soil, making it easier for the plant to absorb moisture and nutrients and fight pests & disease much easier. Both our ican Fast Food and the Wairarapa product Seamite are great options. Do remember to take care when fertilising your garden - damage can be caused by overfeeding as well as underfeeding. Some plants (such as Proteas & Leucadendrons) don’t like to be fed so it’s a good idea to do a bit of research first. Also keep fertiliser away from roots & stems to avoid possible burning. Take the time to read instructions and take a note of what/when/ how much you have fed your plants, gardens and pots -it’s easy to forget what has been done.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE FED NOW? AND WITH WHAT?
around each bush and water in well, and apply again in mid summer to promote autumn blooms.
The following options are for use on established plants for the garden only - DO NOT USE IN POTS - it can be too harsh & burn roots. Many of our large bags of Kings fertilisers are 2 for $33 - so now is the time to get feeding your garden and save!
LAWNS. For lovely lush lawns then feeding with a quality lawn food such as Kings Lawn Fertiliser is recommended twice a year—once in autumn to help it through autumn, and once in spring to help it through spring.
ROSES. Well fed roses will have better colour, fragrance and health. Seaweed tonic is great for roses but for a longer lasting boost then Kings Rose Food is great value. Apply 1 cup of rose food
CITRUS & FRUIT TREES. Citrus trees are hungry feeders, especially from the time they time they bloom until they have firmly set fruit. Fruit trees also need quality food so they will grow to their full potential.
SHOP & WIN Every day we give away 2 x $25 GARDENBARN VOUCHERS to a GardenBarn Card Holder who has shopped with us.
NATURAL GOODNESS FOR YOUR VEGETABLE GARDEN
Take a note of when you fed your plants. It’s easy to forget and give them another dose ‘just in case’ - this can do more harm than good.
When it comes to fertilising your vegetable garden it’s a good idea to boost the soil with lots of ‘natural’ goodness. Sheep pellets and compost are great choices, along with blood and bone & seaweed. We have a great range to choose from here at GardenBarn but here are some of our favourites.
SOME IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER ‌
Our exclusive range of ican fertilisers are the best you can get for your garden. If it’s available in the ican range then you know you are getting the best quality for the best price.
 Always read the instructions carefully of all products you are using  Only use slow, controlled release or liquid fertiliser for plants in pots  Take note of the NPK content of fertilisers, along with what trace elements they contain.  N = Nitrogen, P = Phosphorus, K = Potassium. We have helpful information alongside our bags of fertiliser to help you choose the right food for your plants, but if you are still unsure ask one of our experienced & friendly team members.
Seamite New Zealand Liquid Seaweed is another great product. The seaweed is sourced from the Wairarapa coast and turned into ‘liquid gold’ and produced right here in Masterton.
FEED YOUR ESTABLISHED HEDGES Spring is a busy growing time for all the beautiful hedges, trees and shrubs you have in your garden so give them a treat with either Tui Novatec Premium or Tui Nitrophoska. Tui NovaTec Premium fertiliser provides a sustained release of easy-toabsorb nitrogen, feeding your plants for up to four months. This combination results in stronger, healthier plants and higher yields from your garden (or pots).

Voters engaged by debate
Carterton
Karen Coltman At the Times-Age Candidates Debate on Tuesday night, six Wairarapa candidates delivered their biggest pitch for votes on the 2020 campaign trail so far. A highly-engaged audience of about 320 people filled the Carterton Events Centre auditorium, with more spilling into the foyer. Debate MC Sam Rossiter-Stead set the scene with a few jokes. Each candidate launched their pitch with a three-minute address. After this, name recognition of Labour’s Kieran McAnulty and NZ First’s Ron Mark, drew applause but newcomer to standing for the Wairarapa seat, National’s Mike Butterick had to work harder to gain the confidence of the room. He succeeded in this, showing knowledge of his party’s policy at a level to match Mark’s and McAnulty’s. Questions from the audience tested whether the candidates had ideas or policy that would directly assist the Wairarapa electorate. The three big questions were themed around care for the environment, jobs and taxation.
From left: Ron Mark, Mike Butterick, Warren Butterworth, Sam Rossiter-Stead, Kieran McAnulty, Celia Wade-Brown, Nigel Gray. PHOTO/ELI HILL
Audience member Tim Hewitt asked a question about why the commercial fishing quotas were so large and what damage was being done by this and what the candidates would do to make the recreational fishing quota fairer. Mark, McAnulty, and Butterick said a review of the commercial fishing quota rules was needed. Mark pointed out that as the prime minister’s fiancé was a recreational fisher, she had an interest in protecting it and Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash had already instigated a review. Butterick said it was important that a
person who fished for food for their family could get enough. New Conservative candidate Warren Butterworth admitted he was unlikely to win the seat, but he urged people to think about how much land Chinese investors were buying and what for. Arriving just as the debate started, Advance NZ candidate Nigel Gray took an alternate point of view to other candidates on the panel and answered questions using his party’s policies as a base. Green candidate Celia Wade-Brown responded to audience questions
with classic ‘green’ policy around the need to reduce carbon emissions, polluting less, and using renewable energy. Ron Mark pointed out to voters that McAnulty was likely to get into Parliament on the list, so if they voted for Mark then they would get two MPs. But McAnulty was very clear that he could get more done and have far greater influence as Wairarapa’s electorate MP rather than as a list MP. Having three years of being an MP under his belt for the Labourled government, he was confident in backing his
party’s policies. When quizzed by an audience member McAnulty also said he was “totally opposed” to the 90-day trial for workers. “Any legislative structure that allows someone to be fired for no reason whatsoever after 89 days is fundamentally flawed and I will oppose this as a member of Parliament.” Mark, Butterick, Butterworth, and Gray all voted no to the Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill, and the End of Life Choice Act. McAnulty and Wade-Brown both voted a double yes.

CARTERTON DISTRICT COUNCIL
Councillor Kōrero At a recent meeting I attended, one of the presenters shared a quote about change, which was quite thought provoking: “If the challenge we face doesn’t scare us, then it’s probably not that important.” - Simon Sinek. Councils across New Zealand have some big challenges coming up. Some of these include the Resource Management Act reform, Greater Wellington’s Proposed Natural Resources Plan and
of course climate change and how we adapt to this. A major conversation currently underway is the Three Waters Reform. There is potential that this time next year councils will no longer be in charge of drinking water, waste-water, and stormwater. These changes can feel daunting. However, with change always comes the opportunity to do things better. As a council we will be ensuring that our community’s

voice is brought to the table, and that we’re making decisions for the long-term benefit of our community and environment.
WHARAURANGI
Deputy Mayor
Rebecca Vergunst
You also have the opportunity to personally contribute to some of these discussions. Many of these items will be open for public consultation, and your elected members are always open to catching up and having a chat about what is on top of the pile for Council right now.

committee adopted a civic garden watering policy to formalise last summer’s approach of watering council gardens with non-potable (non-drinking) bore water. We will now also try to incorporate more drought
resistant planting as part of our parks and reserves maintenance.
The committee also adopted a new street naming policy which reflects council’s desire to see a greater use of Māori names within new developments.

Wharaurangi is now known as Glenburn. It was a residential place and one of the last chiefs there was Te Weraiti Kawekairangi. Many of the early leaders of European settlers sought to speak with him. A wharau is a temporary shelter like a lean to and rangi is the sky, an adjective. A sky shack was important for a fishing community because from this spot people would study the stars. The map of the night could guide fisherman out to good fishing spots and back into land. The lunar calendar studied from Wharaurangi could indicate planting cycles and fishing cycles. Familiarity with our dark skies helped the best fishers and the best gardeners achieve success.
On the ground at Holloway Street My role is across all three Wairarapa councils, which is a busy and varied role with links to multiple organisations such as cycling clubs, trails project groups and Trusts. Sitting on Wairarapa Road Safety Council, I’m passionate about the safety of our cyclists. I’m part of the project team for the Five Towns Trail Network, and I’m very excited about the work on increasing trail provisions for all users in our region as well as the recent government funding to build the Tauherenikau Trail Bridge. I manage Huri Huri Bike Wairarapa, which is all about the promotion of cycling activity and events
throughout our region. Working closely with clubs and event organisers, I ensure there are no clashes of dates on the cycling calendar of events, so everyone can enjoy all that is on offer. Community events where children and adults get to have fun while cycling are a fun part of my role. At the recent Carrington Park Family Bike Day held on Saturday 3rd October, the official opening of the Lions Road Safety Track was celebrated with children enjoying the track which boasts Wairarapa’s only sets
of permanent traffic lights. The decorated bike competition had a range of wonderful entrants, and the bike rodeo obstacle course was a hit. Adults had their own fun being able to have a go with e-bike demos whizzing around Carrington park circuit. VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! For all of you complainers out there, this is finally your chance. So often I hear about ‘the government stuffing up this or that, or not doing enough for so and so’, well now is the time to make your voice heard. We’re lucky, we live in a democracy, we have a collective say over who represents us, and the values that we want to see in power. So vote… do your research, and find the party for you. Another common complaint is that ‘there’s no one worth voting for’ – quite often this comes from people who feel like there aren’t any real choices between the major political parties. Well guess what? – There are options for you too! Minor and fringe parties have points of view that go further than, or against the mainstream. If enough people vote for them they’ll have a shot at a seat in power. It’s as simple as that. Vote. Vote. Vote. Vote for your future, vote

CUTIES OF THE WEEK
Eli Hill for your family, vote for yourself, and vote for those who don’t have a voice. Vote to legalise cannabis or vote against it. Vote for euthanasia or vote against it. There are polling booths right across Wairarapa, and friendly staff to help you out. I have to admit that the words I’m writing would probably sound like the scrawlings of a madman to a younger version of myself who only enrolled because of peer pressure. But once I was enrolled, and once I started doing some research on who I was going to vote for I started to care. And I think that’s the important thing – we should care about our future, we should care about who makes decisions about where our taxes
are spent, and we should care about who’s spending the money we’re about to borrow. It’s been great to see the number of people who have attended candidates debates in the leadup to the election - the Times-Age Candidates Debate was a full house, with plenty of people watching online. Good on all of you who have voted already – and good on all of you who are going to vote. If you haven’t voted already on election day there will be a number of voting places in Masterton, Carterton, Featherston, and Martinborough, as well as schools and community halls in more remote areas. All voting places are open from 9am to 7pm and you can find more information on voting places to visit at www.vote.nz.

Wairarapa Teachers Art At Aratoi, we are always keen to try something new. Kate Devenny, our fantastic educator suggested a teachers exhibition to link with the yearly Breadcraft Schools art exhibition. This is a first of its kind and the exhibition showcases the incredibly diverse art practice of Wairarapa teachers. Fifteen teachers from nine Wairarapa schools have come together, demonstrating their skills and creative strengths. We wanted to provide a stage for teachers to show off their creative spark. Students have enjoyed seeing their teachers’ works on display to see their creativity and be inspired by it. As art teachers, they continue their own practice while supporting, guiding, and educating their students on a daily basis. The high quality of
artworks gives insight to the talented teaching that leads our region’s students to produce outstanding work. Elise HoogstedenRoberts loves working with polymer clay but enjoys dabbling with resin, mosaic and metal enamel flowers with a twist of nostalgia. She often gets asked about the inspiration for her liquorice allsorts jewellery, and for her it all began when she wanted an extraordinary gift for a vivacious friend but couldn’t find anything. Inspiration hit browsing the supermarket shelves and liquorice allsorts leaped out. The gift problem was solved with the creation of her first liquorice allsorts necklace. Discussion to focus on US election At its next meeting, the Wairarapa branch of the Institute of International Affairs host Professor Nigel Roberts to discuss ‘The 2020 Presidential Elections in the Disunited States of America’ – just two weeks before polling day in the USA. Roberts has studied elections in the USA for nearly 60 years. He first saw John F. Kennedy on the campaign trail in 1962, and then at the White House in 1963. Roberts has also observed Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan in action, and in 2001 met Barack Obama when he was still an Illinois state senator. Roberts was in the United States for the 2016 Presidential elections and the unexpected victory of Donald Trump. Immediately after the 2016 elections, he said, “As a political scientist, my professional judgement is that almost all governments are not as good as their supporters say, nor as bad as their opponents claim.” Roberts now says, “Sadly, I was wrong about

I’m proud to say that Masterton has one of the highest enrolment rates in the country for people aged 18-24. And while they may not be reading this, we all have a responsibility to help them vote. Take them along with you to the polling booth, or do what I do and keep asking whether they’ve
voted. These are important decisions and we need to take advantage of the opportunity to have our say. In other news, summer is just around the corner and discussions about water restrictions are happening. We need to be prepared to do things differently. If you don’t have systems set up at home to make use of grey water, that’s a good place to start. It could simply be a bucket in the bottom of your shower that you use to water the gardens. Until next month, take care.
NOW’S THE TIME, DO IT ONLINE If you don’t already get your rates notices via email, this month is a good time to sign up! We’re offering you the chance to be one of three ratepayers to win $500 off their next rates bill simply by signing up to the eRates service. People who have already signed up are in the running. You can sign up online with your valuation number or give our customer services team a call on 06 370 6300. It’s not only convenient for you, but it will also help Masterton District Council save as much as $40,000 a year by cutting printing and postage costs. Head over to the sign-up page: www.mstn.govt.nz/rates

Summer’s coming and we all know that means water restrictions are again likely to be necessary to help protect the health of the Waingawa River, the source of Masterton’s drinking water. Water restrictions can change quite regularly, as we try to give gardeners the benefit of hiher ows een if it is onl for a short time. e now this can sometimes mae it difficult to now what restriction is in place, so this summer we are planning to install additional signage around the town to show restrictions, as well as introducing a phone app to advise people when restrictions change. We’ll have more information about this in the next few weeks. And remember, the council website and Facebook pages will be kept updated with the restriction level. Before the heat of summer arrives, it’s a good idea to prepare by laying mulch over gardens, to reduce water loss through evaporation, and keeping weeds to a minimum to reduce competition for water. It’s also a good time to look at methods for collecting rainwater. Water meters have also been installed for 70 per cent of Masterton homes and residents can check their meters to identify possible leaks inside the boundary. If no taps are turned on but the meter counter is moving, water may be leaking. If this is the case, contact the council for advice.

WHEN WILL YOU GIVE UP?
October meteors’ view perfect if clear One little virus, that you can’t even see, has brought the whole world to a standstill. We have been trying all sorts of ways to stop it spreading. We’ve spent millions of dollars, but no one can stop it or kill it. Can you not see how weak and helpless we are? Maybe one day we can master this virus, but then there will be something else. Sooner or later you will have to die. Are you ready? Lots of people are afraid of dying, because they don’t know what will happen after death. We all want to go to a place that’s called Heaven even though we don’t know what Heaven is like. Heaven is a place where God is and He will be worshiped there by those who love Him. Do you love God the way He is and not just the way you think He is? In the Bible we find out who God is. He is the only God, the all-powerful One. He who is the One who allowed this virus to make us stop and get our attention. Has He gotten your attention? Have you given up your fight against Him? Please surrender your life to Him and let Him take over. God has said in the Bible in Proverbs 1:33 that whoever listens to Him will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm. God is calling you. He has no desire in your death, but that you may turn to Him
and live. How do I know this? Look at what God did for you and me. He sent His Son to be nailed to a cross and die for our sin—our disobedience to God. That’s how much He loved this world! Whoever believes in Jesus His Son will not perish but have everlasting life. God said “Call upon me in the day of trouble, and I will deliver you.” You ARE in great trouble whether you know it or not. No one has ever escaped meeting God and neither will you. Call upon God now for whosoever shall upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. God will hear you when you call. It doesn’t make any difference who you are. Jesus said, “Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” Jesus still saves all that come to Him. You will never get to Heaven without Jesus. Please give up trusting in yourself and trust in Jesus.
We have been looking at the birth and life of Jesus the last few Sundays at the Little Haven. On Sunday, 18th October at 2pm we will look at Jesus’ suffering and death. Everyone is most welcome. Afternoon tea will be served. Upcoming dates are: 1st ,15th and 29th November.

Sky Watch
Nick Sault Great. We are all on level 1 now. Congrats to the vast proportion of Kiwis who have followed the rules and got us to a globally envious state. The less said about the tiny proportion who buck the rules, the better. Millions of American bucked the rules and look at their covid numbers. And for those people who say to me “but look at the size of their population”, let’s compare apples with apples. The state of South Carolina has about the same population as New Zealand, but has had 160,000 cases and 3600 deaths. Enough said, I think. As you guessed, I am a numbers person. So, when I say that this week’s meteor shower will produce up to 25 visible meteors an hour, I may have to qualify that by
insisting that you find a very dark place if you want to see that number. But if the sky is clear everything else is perfect to see the Orionids. Perfect, that is if you don’t mind getting out before 5.30 am. But it should be worth it. The peak of the Orionid shower is next Wednesday, but it would be visible before you were able to grab your Midweek. Any morning this week or next should be good, as there’s no fat moon to get in the way. The radiant point, which is the visual centre of where the meteors appear to radiate from, is almost due north. But better still, Orion constellation, from which the shower gets its name, is about the most prominent constellation in the sky, and is high in the north at that time.
Orionid meteor streaks across the Milky Way.
The meteors will appear to emanate from a point just off Orion’s left shoulder. Unfortunately, the hunter is upside down from New Zealand so look below and to the right of the bright red star Betelgeuse. That’s the radiant, and the meteors will fly off in all directions from there. The Orionids are debris left over from the passage of Halley’s comet. Yours truly saw that beast in 1986 from Saudi Arabia and later that year from Florida. I hope to see Halley’s next time around and write about it in Midweek. I’ll only be 116 at that time. While you’re out there for the meteors, note also a last glimpse of Venus rising in the east, while Mars is setting over the ranges in the west. Of course, Mars is best seen in the evening, low in the northeast. It is still at its brightest for nearly two years, so get its redness before it starts to dim. Advertorial
Sometimes it takes a village Dear friends, If you come to Pūkaha and speak with the staff here, one thing you’ll quickly discover is that we’re big on community. Nothing happens here without the work of somebody, and more often than not, a whole lot of somebodies. Collectively, Pūkaha – as it appears here today – is the result of all these people [sponsors, iwi, staff, volunteers, helpers, tradestaff etc.] putting their time, energy, culture and effort into the place to provide for the forest and all its wildlife inhabitants. Including the human ones. It’s able to exist for our community, by the community. And that’s not lost on us. Which is why every year, on the Sunday during Labour Weekend, we open our doors and invite the community inside to come and check us out. Entry is by koha [donation]. We call this event our Community Open Day. This year it falls on October 25. Everyone is invited – including you, your whānau, friends or guests. The day pretty much centres around fun, family, children and education. It’s a chance to see what we do, get up close with nature and to ask questions of those that work the closest with our wildlife.
MASTERTON MINIPUTT AND BIKE HIRE PHOTO/SUPPLIED.
Mixed in with this is a whole heap of fun kids’ activities such as rock painting, kiwi art creating, seed pot making, wildlife story telling, bird feeder compiling and perhaps even a scavenger hunt. There’ll be market stalls [cash only], ranger talks, a Department of Conservation sausage sizzle, MoreFM radio station running prize giveaways and even a free Manukura mascot photo booth where children can get their photo taken. This wonderful day happens thanks to our community because sometimes it just takes a village. Monies raised on the day will be used to support native forest restoration, captive breeding programmes for at-risk native species and the release of rare native birds into the wild. If you’d like to support
local conservation in your community, and have your very own peek at Pūkaha, head along. Everyone is welcome. Doors open at 10am and the event will run until 4pm. Please car-pool if possible and follow www.facebook.com/ pukahawhanau/ for more details. Look forward to seeing you here, The Pūkaha Rangers. Contributed by Alex Wall • The Wairarapa Midweek has partnered with Pukaha National Wildlife Centre to put a spotlight on wildlife conservation efforts locally and allow readers to get up close and personal with New Zealand’s amazing native species.
The kids are bored at home, or they’ve been sitting in the back seat for three hours saying: “Are we there yet”. What better way to burn off some energy and give vent to that competitive streak than to hire a bike and cruise the beautiful Queen Elizabeth Park followed by a round of MiniGolf at Masterton’s acclaimed MiniPutt course. The Masterton Mini Putt is another long-standing Masterton South Rotary club project. On any day of the week you can see kids, teenagers, mums and dads and grandparents all testing their putting skills. Of course it is highly competitive so scoring and putting etiquette is taken very seriously. Don’t those kids just love trying to beat their parents. A great way to spend an hour in the well-designed enclosed course on the fringe of Masterton’s beautiful Queen Elizabeth Park. Masterton Mini Putt was opened in 1979 and has been managed in the contract from the Rotary Club of Masterton South first by Duncan Adair, and for the last 8 years by Catie Manson. Fees for a round of golf are just $8 per adult and $5 for under-18s. Group Discounts are available. The

There is a range of bicycles that can fit the whole family including a trailing buggy for toddlers. Cycle trails wend their way through the Park, and for those looking to stretch their legs, there are trails up and down the adjacent Waipoua river that link up with the Henley Lake Reserve, with its own complex of beautiful trails. Again the prices are kept at a reasonable level, and all proceeds from both the Mini Putt and the Cycle hire are returned directly to the community in the form of grants to local organisations.

Rescue box becomes essential Comment – Pick ‘n Mix
Graeme Burnard I was watching a TV broadcast about the wildfires at Lake Ohau. One poor man standing in front of a pile of ash said they had lost everything. Every single thing they owned. I tried to imagine losing the things we loved, the things that had memories and family connections, the things that can never be replaced. If we had to evacuate quickly, as this man had, we would not have time to gather together the important things so I have decided to create a rescue box and fill it with the most precious of our possessions. I am not talking so much about the things we have on display although to lose some of those would be tragic, but more, the precious papers, photos, family jewellery etc. For instance, I have my father’s last drivers licence. I have family birth, marriage and death certificates. I have a piece
of paper with my father’s handwriting on it and we have one-off photos that no one else in the family has. I have a lock of my mother’s hair and some of her special needlework. I have papers regarding my grandfather’s departure from New Zealand during World War I to go to Gallipoli. These things are all tucked away in drawers and would be very hard to gather up in a hurry. None of these things have any monetary value, but they are priceless to us. My wife has lost three of her siblings who all died young and we have copies of their death notices from the paper and copies of their funeral services. Losing these things would be absolutely devastating. A copy of insurance policies and our wills will also go in there. It is essential that this box can be lifted and very importantly, kept near the escape route door. In fact not even in the house would be good.
There is another scenario where this rescue box could be very important. Five years ago, I was given the task of clearing out my mother’s house and sorting through her belongings. She hadn’t died. She had gone to the doctor in the morning, admitted to hospital straight away and a month later went into care until she died seven months later. From the day she went to the doctor, she never stepped foot in her house again. Her beautiful home and gorgeous garden was her palace, her place of sanctuary, where she loved to be. She was so devastated at not going back, she never referred to it as “home” again, referring to it only by its street number – 186. I found it very hard deciding what to keep and what to dispose of, but I found some real little personal treasures. I hope that when we have both gone off on the next adventure, whoever is charged with clearing out our home, finds the box and realises that its contents are precious to the family. I urge you to do the same.

✓ y a d o T N O R e t o V e t a d Candi Born and raised in Wairarapa My Early Life It was the neighbour who found two small children late one evening, sitting on the back doorstep of their darkened home alone and locked out. I was not much older than three at the time, and my sister Angela was only seven. This kind neighbour took us in, gave us a bath, clean clothes to wear, made us dinner and after she had put us to bed, sat down and wrote to the The Social Security Department. Only days later I was made a ward of the state. I was fostered by numerous families in the Wairarapa, some family experiences were great, some not so much. Moving from home to home with a revolving door of foster parents, uncles, aunties and grandparents; being the butt of other kids jokes, being bullied and never knowing where or who your own family were, and why they didn’t want you, made for a less than ideal start in life. But, in a way I am grateful for it, because that shaped me and the way I approached life from a very young age.
After being told by a teacher at 16 years old “that I would never amount to anything”, my mind was made up, I wanted to be a soldier. I left school and joined the New Zealand Army. I was formally placed into the care and custody of the Army’s Regular Force Cadet School. For the last 11 years I have dedicated time to supporting foster parents and foster children and I tell these children, “life is not always fair, it’s tough and there will always be challenges. But it is not what happens to you that deÿ nes you, it is how you respond in those times of adversity. That is what will determine whether you succeed or fail. The key is to never give up”. I have often been asked how have I managed to be so successful in my ministerial portfolios of Defence and for Veterans Affairs. I say it is because I knew the job inside out. I’d spent 20 years in the military and 20 years in parliament preparing for it. My six years of multinational peace making operations gave me the international experience to engage and lead on the international strategic defence and security stage.

Government NZ and with all of the Wairarapa Councils, serving on the Wairarapa DHB, six terms in parliament and being a cabinet minister - has prepared me superbly for this role. I love Wairarapa. I am passionate about it; I want only the very best for it and I have nothing but optimism for it.
I knew what needed to be done, I knew how to do it, and I got on with it. This will be the same if I become the MP for Wairarapa. I know what needs to be done and I will get on with it. My experience ranges from scrub cutting, working on farms, trapping, milking, breaking horses, running a small business, employing staff, serving on the governance board of numerous Maori Agribusinesses (one of which built Miraka), being the CEO of the Federation of Maori Authorities, being a successful Lead Negotiator for our Ngati Kahungunu treaty settlement, being a Mayor, working with Local

I have been around. I am not coming in cold, wet behind the ears, with my trainer wheels on, and I am certainly not a ‘show pony’ looking for my next photo opportunity. I know what needs to be done, I know how to do it and the urgency with which we must move. I have the energy, the drive, and the determination to succeed for us all. For the last 21 years the Wairarapa has had mediocre representation in Parliament. I am actually the ÿ rst cabinet minister in Wairarapa since Wyatt Creech, and yet I am not your local MP! Imagine what I could do for you if I was. Look at what I have done for Defence and for Veterans. Give me a shot. Just one shot. Vote for me and make me your Constituent MP and if you think I am useless, ÿ re me.

VOTE RON MARK Having been in business and having served as a Mayor, I understand in detail the challenges we all face, and I know what needs to be done. When I was the Mayor of Carterton, I learned that for every $80,000 of new spending this meant an increase of 1% on rates. I know how important infrastructure is, and the huge pressures being faced by our councils and you the ratepayers to pay for the roads, water storage, upgrading rail, our electricity infrastructure, our digital and cellular connectivity and our airport. It is vital to get central government to fund this work - because if government does not we; each and every one of us, will have to - and with our small population, we simply can’t do it. The challenges Wairarapa faces revolve around what I refer to as our ‘Spinal Infrastructure’ It is that from which everything else grows. 1. Roading 2. Rail 3. Airports 4. Digital Connectivity (both cellular and broadband) 5. Electricity (reliability of supply and capacity) 6. Water NZ First has always recognised this, and that is why we established the $3 Billion Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) as a requisite to any Coalition Agreement. In three short years we have made unbelievable progress for Wairarapa. I have steadfastly stood up for Wairarapa and made sure that Wairarapa has received substantial investments not only from the PGF, but also the Land Transport Funding, Recreation Funding, and Infrastructure Funding.
Roading The Manawatu - Tararua Highway I asked the leader of New Zealand First Rt Hon Winston Peters to attend a public meeting in Woodville in June 2017, and for him to pledge that if elected a new road would be funded, and work would commence in this term of government. On 11 August 2020, a signing ceremony was held to celebrate the start of the build.
Route 52 I supported Mayor Tracey Collis’s PGF bid to secure funding for Route 52, a vital link between the Central Hawkes Bay, the Tararua District and Wairarapa. When the original bid failed I supported their bid to the COVID Shovel Ready Fund, where it was again rejected – but I went back into bat again to ÿ nally secure an investment of $14.6m in August 2020.
Rail Kiwi Rail Main Trunk Line Upgrade An investment of $193m was made to the upgrade of the Wellington and Wairarapa main trunk railway line. A project I was lobbying for when I was Mayor of Carterton.
Waingawa Inland Port Rail Head Extension This inland port was set up by Carterton District Council but the Kiwi Rail loading area was too small. I asked Shane Jones to visit the site, this was key in securing the funds to lengthen it, and it is now complete.
Airports Masterton Hood Aerodrome As Mayor of Carterton I made a commitment to Masterton that I would help get Hood back up and running. On 15 July 2020 Minster Grant Robertson announced the $10m funding grant for its development.
Water Three Wairarapa Water Projects A combined investment of $8.5m was provided to the Wakamoekau Community Water Storage Scheme, the Wairarapa Water Resilience Strategy, and the Wairarapa Water Mapping Project. Again, I worked closely with NZ First’s Under Secretary Fletcher Tabuteau to get this funding across the line.
Recreation/Tourism Masterton Skate Park On 15 July 2020 Minister Grant Robertson announced $1.3m grant for
the Masterton skate park. A project that was strongly recommended by me in discussions between him and Minister Jones as being “one for the kids that given Masterton District Council’s tight ÿ nancial situation, might otherwise never happen”.
Five Towns Trail Network Project This is a $1m Crown Infrastructure Partners Project. The project creates a connected trail throughout Wairarapa to increase outdoor recreation opportunities, improve public health and well-being, and attract more visitors to the region.
The Dark Sky Project On 2 July 2019 Hon Shane Jones announced a total of $122,000 in funding for the ‘Dark Sky’ project – A Regional Visitor and Tourism focused initiative aimed at gaining formal accreditation as an international ‘Dark Sky Reserve’.
Youth Development/ Education Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre Taratahi was originally established as a training centre for Veterans returning from WWI. The reopening of Taratahi has been a strong focus of mine, Tracey Martin, and Mark Patterson.
Youth (at risk) Development and Training On 2 July 2019 Hon Shane Jones announced at REAP in Masterton a $480,000 grant over two years to the Nga Pumanawa Tupuna Programme, targeting at risk rangatahi and youth to develop skills and habits necessary for success in life and work.

For the last 11 years the blokes at the Henley Mens Shed have just toughed up on frosty mornings and endured, but those days are over thanks to some awesome businesses and the great people in them who are also great believers in what the Mens Sheds do in the community. Over summer and avoiding lockdown, a group of people from Black Diamond Technologies (BDT), National Mechanical & Electrical (NME) and J. A. Russell pulled together to sponsor the supply and installation of all the equipment to make the Shed warm for those who come to this sanctuary where blokes can be blokes, doing their stuff shoulder to shoulder, creating, inventing, yarning, sharing, learning in the name of mens health and wellbeing. The equipment comprised two commercial outdoor units and three indoor units, piping, trunking and cabling. Peter Hutson (the national manager of BDT) just wanted to help in any way he could and he did, his visit to the shed was an eye opener, and was all he needed to decide on the type and size of units

New Mitsubishi Electric heat pump ensures MENZSHED will be the cosiest place in Masterton! required, and soon after Peter delivered right to our door. From that point Mathew Nolan the link person at the shed liaised with Tony O’Connell at NME, then came Sarah Nelson and Simon O’Hara at J.A.Russell in Masterton. Simon helped out with siting the units and where the routing of the pipework should go. For the electrical Sarah quite simply said “what do you need” and made it happen. Oh boy it feels so good to have supporters like these businesses, each committed to supporting community, just like the Henley Mens Shed with its slogan “In the Community, For the Community”. Recently Henley Mens Shed were asked about the extent of their reach out into the local community and the collaboration with local clubs, groups and organisations. Looking through photos and other records the answer is more than 130, this Mens Shed certainly is doing its bit in our community.
Visitors and Supporters always welcome at the Mens Shed

GOLD, OLD COINS, WAR MEDALS, OLD BANKNOTES AND VINTAGE WATCHES DO YOU HAVE ANY OF THE ABOVE? HAVE YOU HAD A GOOD SORT OUT DURING LOCKDOWN? THEN ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS… • • • • • • • • •
Shouldn’t I be selling now at these extremely high NZ gold prices? Now that I’ve sorted them do I need to keep them? Will the kids or grandchildren really want or appreciate them? Isn’t the money better off in my pocket? Will the museum want them considering how much they already have in storage? Will the burglars get them? Will they be safe in an earthquake or other disaster? Do I have the expertise to sell them myself on the Internet? Shall I give the items away or give them the money instead?

FOALING Spring has well and truly sprung, with lots of lambs and calves to be seen springing about the paddocks. Well, what you can see through all the changeable weather, anyway! Foals often come a little later and many will be due around now. Their birth is a little different to other large animal species and so there are some important facts to know. Mares generally have an 11 month gestation but they can go under or over by a whole month just to keep us on our toes! The longest pregnancy recorded for a live foal is 445 days – that is just waaaaay too long to be pregnant in my humble opinion. Foals grow to the size of the uterus and so rarely present with oversize problems, even if overdue. There are various signs we look for to decide if mares are going to foal. Dates give us some clue; we also look for slackening of the muscles at the back of the rump, development of an udder and sometimes unsettled behaviour, especially as the foal
shifts to get into position. If we think we are getting near, a foaling alarm is often used plus the ph of the mare milk can be checked with simple pool strips. A sudden drop in ph usually means the mare will foal within the next day or 2. Foaling itself is an explosive event, that can be over in as little as 20 minutes. Mares usually try very hard to hide from stressors and so the event is often missed unless there is someone awake on foal watch, or an alarm is used. Foals should get up and drink quickly, plus the afterbirth should pass shortly after. If you are not experienced and you have a foal due, consider either sending your mare away for professional foaling down, or contact your vet to get a thorough run through of your equipment, facilities and your plan. Watch out! Once foals arrive, they are terrible time wasters..

Another piece of great advice from Australian Ninja Warrior finalist Olivia Vivian. At a time when she was going through difficult times in her life she made a concerted effort to focus on the things that she was grateful for. To ensure that this became a part of her daily routine Vivian set a daily alarm that goes off at 3.21pm every afternoon [3-2-1 gratitude]. At this time she’ll acknowledge three things in her life that she’s grateful for, with them not needing to be major, just things as simple as a parking space appearing outside a store, or a morning cup of coffee. The little things do add up to make a satisfying and fulfilling life when we take the time to notice them happening.
A lovely act of kindness
Watching the fabulous Daily Stoic on YouTube I saw a wonderful story of kindness that needs to be shared. Brandon Matthews was putting for a chance to qualify for a prestigious golf tournament. Just as he was about to hit the ball a fan called out in the audience, causing Matthews to miss, meaning he would miss qualification. This caused huge frustration and immediate anger. However, Matthews quickly realised that the person who called out was a big fan who had Down’s Syndrome and the calling out wasn’t intentional. Despite the huge opportunity that would be missed, Matthews went over to the fan, gave him
a hug and a golf ball. Matthews overcame his anger when he understood that the damage caused wasn’t intentional. The story has an even happier ending ... on hearing what happened the organisers of the Arnold Palmer Classic tournament gave Matthews a place in the tournament, proving that kindness does pay off.
Help others to help yourself
I am sure I have shared this idea in one form or another many times, but this doesn’t mean another mention is needed; sometimes we need reminders of the most simple ideas before we actually start implementing them. The idea I’m referring to was shared by author Jay Shetty, who has produced YouTube videos on spiritualism and well-being that have had billions of views. Talking to Rich Roll on the Rich Roll podcast Shetty shared a very simple way of helping yourself, this being to help others. We all recognise that feeling of inner warmth when we do something to help another person. What an effective way to spread positivity, the giver and receiver both benefit!
Not typical is ÿ ne
Watching The Titan Games this evening I was really impressed with the backstory of Courtney, one of the female athletes. As a teenager Courtney wanted to be a model. At the first meeting she had with an agency she was told that she was the wrong shape
[too muscular] and wrong look [whatever that means] to be a model. Feedback like this was enough for her to give up the dream. Fortunately her mother didn’t, and one day Mum just happened to be sitting next to an editor of a magazine at a tennis tournament. This led to a conversation which in turn led to Courtney featuring in Vogue Magazine as her first modelling assignment. Courtney’s story tells us that we shouldn’t accept the limitations that others place on us. The way forward for may not be typical, but there’s still a strategy and process we can apply, it just might not be the standard approach!
Something to be aware of
Jay Shetty shares in his book Think Like A Monk the power of negativity. This is essentially a warning to ourselves; as we think negatively, spend time with negative people, and immerse ourselves in negative news, then it’s highly likely that we will become negative ourselves. Shetty doesn’t suggest burying our heads in the sand, ignoring the fact that bad things happen, but he does suggest being aware of what we expose ourselves to in our dayto-day lives: avoid watching the news; ignore social media trolls; don’t sit with the group that always moans and complains. We can’t control what other people say and do, but we can control how much time we spend interacting with negative people and sources of information. • Tim Nelson is principal of Lakeview School and author of the book Small Steps for a happy and purposeful life. He endeavours to learn something new every day by reading books, listening to podcasts, and engaging with a wide range of other content.

of recycled handbags, shoes and jewellery. Siddhi says Encore Designer Recycle mostly stocks middle to high end brands, many of which are New Zealand made: such as Trelise Cooper, Karen Walker, Kate Sylvester, Juliette Hogan and Verge. “Though we do take the odd item from Glassons or Zara – if it looks interesting,” Siddhi says. “We’re not like an op shop which takes everything and anything – it has to be in good condition. “We look at each hanger as a piece of real estate – the clothing has to pay its way.” Siddhi, who spent over a decade working for TVNZ as a producer on Good Morning and assistant to Paul Holmes, bought Encore Designer Recycle in 2002. Over the years, she has seen an explosion in the recycled clothing market – once seen as “rubbish” and treated with suspicion, pre-loved fashion is now a thriving, billion dollar industry. “People love being able to go into one store, and see a a big range of styles – and to buy quality clothing at affordable prices. “And it’s sustainable. Fashion is one of the leading contributors to landfill each year. “It’s rewarding for us to see these beautiful items get a second chance at life, and go on to be loved and admired.” Encore caters mostly for women aged 25 to 70, and stocks sizes 6 to 16. The shop also has new samples and end-ofline items – including a linen range Siddhi imports from Australia.

Kieran McAnulty for Wairarapa
It’s time Wairarapa had an MP at the heart of Government I am asking for your support to become your local electorate MP so that I can build on what we’ve already achieved together. It will mean I can have a stronger and more frequent presence here in Wairarapa and it will mean I have more clout in Parliament. The choice is clear—we can elect an opposition backbencher or, for the first time in a generation, elect an MP with influence in Government.
Back me, so I can back Wairarapa. GET IN TOUCH kieran.mcanulty@labour.org.nz /McAnultyLabour @Kieran_McAnulty Authorised by Timothy Grigg, 160 Willis St, Wellington

FOOTBALL

Chris Cogdale Wairarapa United saved their best for last with an emphatic 6-0 win over Waterside-Karori [Wharfies] to retain their place in the Central League. United went into the last game of the season at Trust House Memorial Park on Saturday needing a win to be certain of avoiding relegation. As it was, the victory was vital with bottomof-the-table Stop Out upsetting Napier City Rovers 3-2 away. United finished the season in eighth place on goal difference from Petone, with Stop Out relegated to the Capital Premier League. United got off to a nervy start with Wharfies looking the more composed in the opening stanzas. “The nerves and the stress on the boys was unbelievable,” United coach Davor Tavich said. “You could see the first 15 minutes we played with a sort of cramp in our legs, but then we loosened up and relaxed and then we started playing beautiful football.” After the slow start, it was veteran striker Seule
Seule Soromon [on ground] bundles ball into the net for the first goal. Josh Rudland [No 9] watches on.
We knew we had to go in and get a result to ensure we stayed up, so it was a little bit of nerves but apart from that, we played well. It capped off a tough season. Soromon who sparked the game into life when he thought he had scored after challenging Wharfies goalkeeper Logan
Kinajil-Moran, only for the referee to deem the challenge to be a foul. From then on, the former Vanuatu
international was back to his best as he hassled and hurried the Wharfies defence. Soromon finally got his reward in the 42nd minute when he bundled in a scrappy goal. He then doubled the lead two minutes later running on to a through ball and beating Kinajil-

Moran with a regulation finish. Soromon had a great chance to complete his hat-trick when he had one on one with KinajilMoran, who did enough to deny him. He then hit a screamer from 35m forcing KinajilMoran to tip the ball over, before he was subbed to

rapturous applause from the good sized crowd. Tavich was rapt with Soromon’s contribution. “When you bear in mind that he doesn’t train at all, he just comes and plays and gives everything he has, and I am so thankful to him for coming into the team when we needed it most.”
United were far from safe against a dangerous counterattacking side and needed a third to put the game out of reach. That came in the 68th minute when midfielder Jonty Roubos found space in the box and chipped the goalie. The fourth goal was classic Paul Ifill.
The former Wellington Phoenix star ran on to a beautiful back flip pass from classy midfielder Hugo Delhommelle, beat two players inside the box, and finished with a curling shot with the outside of the boot. Rathkeale striker Josh Rudland wrapped up the scoring with two late goals

and was thrilled with what he said was their best performance in the two years he has been with the team. “It’s a massive result for us to stay up in the league, and obviously with Stop Out winning in Napier as well, if we had lost today, we would have gone down,” he said.
“We knew we had to go in and get a result to ensure we stayed up, so it was a little bit of nerves but apart from that, we played well. It capped off a tough season.” Wharfies did have a chance to get on the scoresheet when awarded a penalty for a clumsy challenge, only for Scott Morris to pull off a brilliant save, capping off an outstanding season for the talented goalkeeper. Tavich was over the moon and said to win 6-0 in the strong Central League is outstanding. “The boys just played so hard and we created a lot of chances, and we scored beautiful goals. We did leave it a little bit late but better late than never.” Tavich said he never lost faith in the team despite the battles throughout the season. “I know this group of young men are outstanding.” “The games that we lost even when we got smashed, they stuck together, they trained hard, they tried hard, and then at the end I knew it would come good and eventually it did. “I’m so proud of the efforts from the young fellas and the seniors.”
