Doreen finds a home at Kandahar Village

Doreen O’Brien wasn’t planning to move house, but when she happened upon Kandahar Retirement Village she didn’t look back.

She saw the villas being built while driving past to go to a friend’s house, and when the showroom opened she thought she’d have a look.

“I just loved the house straight away. I thought, ‘oh yes, I think I need to move here.’”

With the support of her family, Doreen made the move to Kandahar Village with her dog Bella at the end of last year.

Kandahar’s two-bedroom villas are warm, comfortable and have been designed with consideration for the ageing process.

The villas’ internal garage was a selling point for Doreen, as her car had been stolen from in front of her previous home.

She likes to go for walks down to nearby Henley Lake and makes quilts which she gives to family and friends.

She got into quilt making about 20 years ago and at the time didn’t know how to use a sewing machine, but she was drawn to it and hasn’t stopped since.

“I’m not an arty person, I just do very traditional ones. But I love colour, so if someone strikes me I always think ‘well I’ve got to make them a quilt.’”

Doreen O’Brien likes to make quilts which she gives away to family and friends.

of the community centre.

Work is underway on the centre that will be a social hub for the village and will host activities such as crafts, games, and village functions.

Residents like Doreen enjoy the independence and freedom of living in their own home, with time for the things they love, like making quilts, while Enliven takes care of the hard work.
