Screening saves lives Emily Ireland Next year, the recommended starting age for cervical screening in New Zealand will be upped from 20 years old, to 25. But for Masterton nursing student Holly MajborodaDouble, that would have been too late. Holly, 24 was diagnosed with cervical cancer this year, making her one of the few young women diagnosed in 2018. Best case scenario, she will get smears every six months for the rest of her life for monitoring purposes; worst case – she may lose her fertility at the age of 24. With the screening age set to rise, Holly is keen to share her experience and “improve health outcomes for the sisterhood”. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers as it typically has a longstanding period of precancer that lasts between 10 to 20 years. For Holly, the cancer progressed much quicker than that. “The stages of pre-cancer consist of CIN1, CIN2,

Staff reporters A Masterton man and woman have been charged with attempted murder following a shooting on Dixon St near Norris Way on Sunday night. The victim, a Masterton woman in her 20s, remains in a stable condition in Wellington Hospital with leg injuries following the incident. A 30-year-old man and 29-year-old woman, known to each other, appeared in Masterton District Court on Monday. Both have name suppression. The man has been charged with attempted murder of the shooting victim, as well as attempted murder of another man at the scene, and two counts of intent to injure. The woman faced two charges – attempted murder of the victim, and intent to injure another man. Both were remanded into custody without plea and are due to appear before the Wellington District Court later this month. A cordon was still in place on Dixon St on Monday while a scene examination took place. Police at the scene said forensic evidence was being protected by the cones and a neighbouring property was also considered part of the scene. Area Commander Detective Inspector Scott Miller said police from Wairarapa, Upper Hutt and Wellington responded to the shooting incident, with help from the Armed Offenders Squad and Wellington dog handlers. The combined effort saw the pair apprehended within five hours of the incident. Miller said the man was found by the

CIN3 – CIN3 being the most precancerous,” Holly said. At the start of this year, CIN3 was found as a result of Holly’s first screening, just before her 24th birthday. She had a biopsy to evaluate the situation, but knowing how long the precancer phase was, Holly said she “went on [her] merry way ignoring the reality of [her] health”. “I knew that it took 10 to 20 years from CIN3 to develop into cancer, so in my head, I thought I had time and that I would have a baby and then sort it out.” “I went on my two placements for my nursing degree, pushing this to the back of my mind.” But two months ago, she was contacted by her doctor who advised her to get rid of the cells now through a procedure which would remove cervical tissue for examination and treat some of the precancerous changes of the cervix. The procedure is called a large loop excision of the Continued on page 3 Holly Majboroda-Double. PHOTO/EMILY IRELAND

Collective Worth art project Emily Ireland

Masterton artist Raine Mackenzie is embarking on a journey to bring Wairarapa people a collective sense of worth through street art. Her newly launched project, Collective Worth, is in early consultation stages with the community and she is in the process of applying for funding through trusts. The end result will be pieces of street art around Masterton created by locals for locals. Her Raine Mackenzie is calling for creative locals particular to come together for a project creating goal is to artwork promoting “collective worth”. give youth PHOTO/BRENDON LANG/PHOTOMOJO a project

they can invest in – a constructive legacy they can leave for others. Raine, a tattoo artist at Sacred Art Tattoo & Piercing, grew up in an “unconventional household”. “When I was young, what really helped me was art,” she said. “Growing up with neglectful parents, I found I could retreat within my imagination and that sparked my creativity. “With every hard circumstance in my life, I could always retreat to that creative space. What I’m trying to do is engage that part of other people. “Horrible things may have happened, but we can retreat and create together. “I want to put some of our beautiful tragedy into the streets so that people

can be inspired.” Raine said, growing up in Masterton, she felt disconnected from the community – “I’ve been in low places and fell into the pitfalls of doing drugs and abusing alcohol”.

I want other people to feel how much a sense of purpose and accomplishment can change things. “I’m far from perfect, but I’ve definitely gone through the trial and error process of refining myself to make the best decisions for my mental health. “I feel like I’ve done really well this past year and I want to keep up the

momentum by helping other people – and the thing that helps me a lot is that feeling of accomplishment. “I want other people to feel how much a sense of purpose and accomplishment can change things.” Raine launched the Collective Worth Project concept recently on Facebook and has received a great response from people online. Now, she is hoping more people will share their ideas and potentially spaces where the street art can be displayed. She would love to see the street art displayed in public spaces where youth in particular gather – “places like Henley Lake,

the Queen Elizabeth duck pond, and skatepark”. “Wherever it can be seen by lots of young people.” It is envisaged that the street art would incorporate positive messaging to boost self-esteem and a sense of worth and purpose. In particular, she hoped the messaging would honour “those we have lost from mental health in our community”. “I want people to see this art and know that there are people who care about them.” • To get in touch with Raine or get involved in getting the Collective Worth project off the ground, visit the Facebook page, Collective Worth Project.

Two people charged with attempted murder Continued from page 1 railway lines behind Oxford St. “When he was faced by the Armed Offenders squad he gave himself up,” he said. Miller said the suspect was in possession of a shotgun which police believed to be the weapon used in the shooting. The female suspect was found separately at a different address. About 20 family members of the victim gathered outside Wairarapa Hospital on Sunday night where the woman was initially taken by a member of the public. The hospital went into lockdown for a short time until the victim was transported by Life Flight’s Westpac rescue helicopter to Wellington Hospital to receive surgery for serious wounds to her leg. A number of eye witnesses were spoken to at the hospital on Sunday night, but police were still working their way through interviews as there were several scenes involved in the incident. Some witnesses reported three carloads of people

at the scene before the shooting, but Miller could not confirm how many vehicles were involved. However, police are appealing for sightings of a late 90s silver Toyota Alteeza saloon which is believed to have been used to transport the suspects. Wairarapa DHB communications manager Anna Cardno said the

family of the victim at the hospital were extremely cooperative and the lockdown was merely precautionary. “We were working with police at keeping both staff and the public safe because the people involved in the shooting hadn’t been detained yet.” She said the lockdown was during staff

changeover which delayed some staff from leaving the hospital at the end of their shifts but they were safely escorted off the property by 11.30pm after the patient was transferred. She was aware of an altercation outside the hospital but said it was handled by police. Miller said police were alerted to a vehicle in the

hospital carpark that may have been involved in the shooting but quickly determined this was not the case. Residents of Dixon St saw the incident unfold following a Sunday afternoon in which a number of patched gang members were seen hanging around the property.

One woman, who did not want to be named, said her family was cooking dinner when she heard two shots fired, followed shortly after by a third shot which sounded “tinnier” than the first two. The woman called 111 while her partner was outside trying to make sure no one came onto their property. “It was horrifying,” she said. “There was lots of yelling and it was very, very, scary. “You don’t know who’s going to run onto your property and the police took ages to come.” She said after the gunshots a man could be heard yelling death threats at a woman, followed by loud screaming. A Kuripuni St resident said the male who was yelling sounded “insane” and female voices could be heard trying to calm him down. Another Dixon St resident said after they heard the shots they heard a lady shouting for someone to call for help, but a man was yelling “no” in response.

Christmas spirit lined up Emily Ireland

Hundreds of presents are expected to flood into Martinborough this weekend, spreading the Christmas cheer far beyond that of the town parade and Christmas show. Fiona Couchman is the organiser of the Christmas Magic in Martinborough Show, an event that directly follows the Christmas parade on Saturday night. She has asked that people donate a children’s gift – and in return they will be able to enjoy a “magical” night of entertainment. “The inspiration around the show came from my personal desire to make a difference to kids in need,” she said. “When I was a child I lived in the Whatman Home orphanage in Masterton, run by the Salvation Army. “My mother was ill her whole life and my brothers and I spent a number of years in foster care and orphanages, but what struck me was there were many children without parents, or kids with parents who didn’t want them. “I was four when I went to live at the Home of Compassion orphanage

and while I was young I remember thalidomide children and children with other deformations whose parents just didn’t want them. “This impacted me immensely and I have always wanted to help others who are less privileged or are in need.” Fiona said there were so many children whose lives were tough and by people bringing a gift for a child in return for entry into the Christmas show, they would be making a huge difference. “I truly believe life would be a better place if everyone took a moment to pay it forward.” May Croft, who is the Archdeacon of Wairarapa,

People are being urged to minimise waste during the festive season and not to overfill their recycling bins. Just as speed and drinking are policed proactively at Christmas and New Year so too are the rules for rubbish recycling bins. The three Wairarapa councils are united in this work – they have put out a joint press statement saying contractor Earthcare will be tightening up on the “two recycling crate rule”. Households have a green and a maroon recycling bin and that is the maximum allowed each week. Last holiday season the contractor worked extra hours to collect excess kerbside recycling but this year councils have ordered a tightening up on the rule that no more than the two crates will be emptied. Wairarapa Zero Waste coordinator Jo Dean encourages residents to start planning now towards a zero-waste holiday period. “It could be as simple as separating out plastic and cardboard from gifts and using the cardboard in your household compost instead of going in your recycling crate,” she said.

From 8pm until 10pm, Wairarapa and Wellington artists will put on a rocking show in the town square. Fiona said when she moved to Martinborough a few years ago and participated in the Christmas carols, she saw an opportunity to create a show beyond just carols. Two years ago, more than 800 people attend the event and almost 400 presents were distributed into the community through the local church in Martinborough and the Salvation Army in Wairarapa. The parade and show are separate events. • It is free to enter a float in the parade and is just a matter of signing up for the day either via contacting Shayne Cater on 0221993429, through the MADCAPS Facebook page, or the email address madcapswainz@gmail. com. • There are prizes for best decorated float awarded by a panel of judges and also people’s choice via a ballot.

8 Wairarapa Midweek Local News Wednesday, December 5, 2018

The price of liberty “The price of liberty, and even of common humanity, is eternal vigilance” – Aldous Huxley. Twelve months ago, Wairarapans were engaged in a debate about whether or not to amalgamate the three district councils. Potential loss of democracy was a key issue that mattered to a lot of people. This year has seen lively discussion about free speech in New Zealand. The Free Speech Coalition pushed back against members of the left for trying to deny Stefan Molyneux and Lauren Southern and then against members of the right who didn’t want to hear from Chelsea Manning. Don Brash was barred from speaking at Massey University. The right to free speech that many of us had assumed was set in concrete was starting to look rubbery. Having our own internal squabbles about who we think has a right to speak is one thing. When it looks like a foreign power wants to limit particular free speech in our country then that is an altogether different matter.

Comment

Mike Osborne A group of academics have written an open letter to the Prime Minister (bit.ly/2TTfeYS) asking for assurances that academic freedom be protected. Why? Professor AnneMarie Brady is a politics researcher and lecturer at Canterbury University. She has done extensive research into the strategy that China has been using to spread and exert its international influence. In 2017 she published a paper (bit.ly/2r9qp2q) called “Magic Weapons” detailing the organisations, people and links of how China is building influence within New Zealand. It’s not a quick read but its language is accessible, and it is certainly an astute piece of research that digs into its subject matter in detail. What has followed is concerning. In February this year Brady’s home was broken into and three laptops, two cell phones and an encrypted memory stick were stolen (bit. ly/2P8yU7w – worth

reading). More troubling was the recent report of Brady’s car being tampered with in a manner that left it dangerous to drive but was fortunately discovered in a WoF check. Threatening mail has accompanied these incidents and Brady knows she’s at risk and has been securing her work. Interestingly, Chris Trotter of the Free Speech Coalition has suggested that the Prime Minister not press the issue as the consequences may be adverse to our best trade interests. (bit.ly/2DUjQsj) Consider this. If Brady was an expert in kiwi gang culture publishing papers on how gangs are gaining mainstream influence and then had her laptops stolen, received threats and dangerous sabotaging of her vehicle, what would be the reaction? Are we happy to apply a lower standard to protection of individuals and free speech because trade or foreign relations might be at risk?

TIPS FOR BEING A TOP HOST

Keeping the cheer in Christmas Christmas is now just around the corner. While the holiday season is a time to get together with friends and loved ones, it can also be a time of family stress and seasonal illness. Here are some tips to help keep Christmas happy and healthy.

Hosting the family Christmas or social club break up?

 Food safety – make sure food is

covered and kept chilled if needed so it doesn’t go off in the summer heat.

 Keep it safe with the BBQ – use

tongs, check for gas bottle leaks and avoid using BBQs inside.

 Be sun smart – wear a hat, re-apply sunblock regularly and stay in the shade during the hottest times of the day.

 Avoid injuries – wear covered

shoes and gloves when getting the garden Christmas-ready and remember your protective gear if you’re playing summer sport.

 Stock up – check your first aid kit

 Stress less – remember that

Christmas is about having fun and sharing special times with family. Keep gatherings relaxed, share the workload and talk to family about a budget limit for gifts.

 Watch it around water – wear a life jacket when you go out boating or fishing and keep an eye on children at all times.

Here are some ideas for being a good (and responsible) host.  Offer guests a range of drinks including non-alcoholic beverages.  Serve food alongside drinks and have plenty of water on hand.  Only top up empty glasses so guests know how much they’re drinking.  Consider going alcohol-free, particularly if children are invited.  Plan activities or things to do other than simply eat and drink.  Offer to call a taxi or arrange a ride for guests if they need it.

Want to be smoke-free this Christmas? Stopping smoking could be the best gift you could give yourself and your family this Christmas. If you want help to stop, talk to your local medical centre, contact Whaiora’s Quit Coaches on 06 370 0818 or go to quit.org.nz.

MIDWEEK PHOTOS

Opinion

Don’t be too silly this ‘silly season,’ please Wow, what a crazy week it has been in Wairarapa. We’ve had it all from fairs and Christmas parades, to weather bombs and even a shooting. Coming up to the Christmas season, I’m hoping that this will be the end of the drama. Afterall, Christmas is a time for family, love, and joy – it’s not a time to be recovering from an assault, and certainly not a time to be grieving for a loved one or fearing for your life. The serious part of this editorial is not over yet. We’re soon going to be heading into what is known as the “silly season” – this is the period lasting for a few summer months where all sorts of frivolous news stories emerge in the media. I call it the silly season for another reason – simply because people get too silly. By all means, relax and have a good time once work wraps up (you deserve it), but please be

CUTIES OF THE WEEK Piece of mind

Emily Ireland careful – don’t drink to excess, and be cautious while driving. The last thing anyone wants is for something to go wrong just before Christmas. Take your time on the road, love one another, leave the past in the past, and leave the drama for Shortland Street. On a brighter note, there are some truly magical things happening in Wairarapa for Christmas – one of which is happening on Saturday in Martinborough. I’ve gone into more depth about this on P6 in the Midweek, but I really want to share it again in the hope that more people will get on board with this awesome initiative. After the Martinborough

Christmas Parade on Saturday night, there will be hours of entertainment for kids and adults. The only catch is that if you would like to enjoy the party, you have to bring a present for a child. State whether the present is suited for a boy or girl, and what age group it is suitable for, and leave it under the Christmas tree in Martinborough Town Square. These presents will then be distributed to children in need in our community. Also, make sure to look out for Sending Love boxes where you can drop off Christmas cards for the elderly and lonely people in our region (there’s one at the Times-Age reception).

Vincent’s Night Niuean artist, novelist and poet John Puhiatau Pule ONZM came to Aotearoa at the age of two, lived in Auckland for decades, and recently returned to Nuie. “Most ideas come from living things. The best ideas come from where I come from. Where I was born is a spectacular event in itself, and that is dazzling for me as an idea,” Pule said in 2014. Pule’s etching ‘Vincent’s Night’ (750mm x 450mm) is a recent acquisition to the collection at Aratoi, anonymously gifted to the museum.

It is on public display in the exhibition ‘New Arrivals’ until 27 February 2019.

Pule had previously exhibited at Aratoi as part of the Kermadec exhibition in 2016.

REPORTING FOR DUTY Name: Cheryl Watson Emergency Organisation: Wellington Free Ambulance Rank/Position held: Emergency Medical Technician Length of service: 6 years Occupation: Ambulance Officer Nicknames: Chez How did you find out about Wellington Free Ambulance? They took over from the DHB ambulance service in 2012. What inspired you to be a paramedic? After volunteering for the ambulance service for two years the opportunity came up to take up paid employment, so I jumped at the chance. What do your family and friends think of your role? That it takes a special kind of person to do the job and that we are under paid. What would you say to someone who is thinking about becoming a paramedic? It’s not all about the big jobs!

What is the most unusual situation/scenario you have come across in your job? There are way too many to pick one, every day is different, and you just never know what your day will bring. What is something surprising about your role that people may not be aware of? We don’t always take our patients to the hospital, we can actually treat people and leave them at home in certain circumstances. How do you relax/ recharge? Catching up with friends and family. What do you do in your spare time?

That would be telling ... Who has been the biggest influence in your life? My parents. What are some guilty pleasures you like to indulge in? Chocolate, and more chocolate. If you could describe yourself in two words what would they be? Passionate and loyal. What’s something about you that most people don’t know? If I told you then people would then know ... What is the first thing you think about when you wake up in the morning? I need to check what I have on for the day ...

Rebel is the tiniest of the five kittens in Dump Cat’s tabby litter. She has the biggest personality though. She taught her siblings how to climb and gave her fosterer grey hairs by scaling every possible height. She’s completely unafraid, runs up for cuddles, purrs like a train, and loves the large family dog. Her belly features the most adorable spots and some of her toes are white. She has such a long tail she can’t hold it straight up when saying hello. Instead it curls and loops expressively. Tiny Rebel, as we call her, will be someone’s best friend. Is it you? Her adoption fee is $140. Rebel will be ready for adoption on December 10. Dump Cats take cats from the Masterton Rubbish Dump, rehabilitates them, and helps them into loving homes. They are vaccinated, de-sexed, and treated for worms and fleas. Their injuries are cared for and they are taught to believe in people again. We want to thank Masterton City Council, Dump Staff, many volunteers and donors, and Vetcare, for helping us to help these cats. See Dump Cats on Facebook: www.facebook. com/DumpCat or on Givealittle: givealittle.co.nz/ cause/help-the-dump-cats We use Advocate, Royal Canin Baby Mousse tins, Breeder Celect cat litter, and Nutrience biscuits. Donations of these, or other products, can be left for us at Vetcare on Chapel St in Masterton. If you want to take one of our cats home, email us for an adoption form and we’ll help you through the process: dumpcatsmasterton@gmail.com.

Gratitude and celebration Volunteering Wairarapa

Jill Greathead win-win for us all. For many of us, that happens when we bring happiness into another person’s life in whatever way we can. Another reason for success is the partnerships and collaborations that we are constantly building with other organisations and businesses in our communities. One of those dear to our hearts is the wonderful team at Supporting Families Wairarapa. They are hosting ‘I Matter, You Matter, We Matter’ – a community expo on mental health from 9am to 2.30pm on Friday December 7 at Carterton Events Centre. Volunteering is a way that all of us including those with mental illness can feel valued whether it is volunteering on a conservation project or caring for those in need. If you or your loved ones are affected by mental illness, abuse, addictions or suicide, ‘I matter, you matter, we matter’ is an informative day, in a nonjudgmental, caring and safe space.

This year is almost over, and we are rolling up to Christmas and New Year. No matter what beliefs you have, it is a great time to show gratitude and to celebrate the success of the past year. We are celebrating International Volunteer Day and inviting the community to a volunteering pop-up in Carrington Park, opposite New World in Carterton this Friday, December 7 from 3pm onwards to join us for a shared afternoon tea where we will provide the drinks and if wish, you can bring something to eat. This is an opportunity for everyone who is interested in volunteering to meet our team, for us to say thank you, and to celebrate on a sunny Wairarapa afternoon in a beautiful park. Our success this year was made possible by reaching out to everyone and asking for your help. We built teams to deliver a service based on compassion and empathy. Our people come from all walks and stages of life. Volunteering has to be a

Carrington Park in Carterton – a beautiful venue for our Volunteering Pop-up this Friday at 3pm. PHOTO/SUPPLIED

It is an opportunity to listen to real people with lived experience, speak with professionals and share and participate in presentations. Entry is free and there is no registration required. We have scheduled our celebration to allow us all to attend this expo to learn more to support the mentally unwell and include them in our volunteering roles in a supported way. By the way, if it is inclement weather, we’ll

be having our volunteering pop-up at Ron Mark’s Electoral Office at 25 High Street North, Carterton.

Training Opportunities

‘Governance Training’ for people who work in the non-profit sector – 5pm to 7pm on Wednesday December 12 hosted by the Wairarapa Community Centre. Please RSVP to bev@ wcct.co.nz or phone 06 377 1022. Cost is $5 per person. Places are limited so be in quick.

It’s the river that weaves us I have just been at the Maori Sports Awards organised and run by Whaiora, a Maori health organisation. The big winners on the night are all the whanau who involve children and adults in sport and exercise. The specific prize winners were varied between a volunteer organiser for the Golden Shears to lifters. A sport I enjoy watching is a Maori specific sport, Waka Ama. The participant acknowledged on the night was Paddy Rimene and for good measure he coaches too. The Ruamahanga Waka club was acknowledged for getting six club members to Tahiti where the world champs were held. One of the world championship participants, Joe Nuku said in his speech, “The river is us and we are the river”. For his club this is true because it shares one of the characteristics of our river, the waka ama club weaves people. Not only does the community support trips to Tahiti through donations,

Ra Smith but the club leaders support the community by offering our whanau the healthy option of participating in waka ama. The Ruamahanga is the weaver of lives in other ways, like being the location for the family BBQ, the social events like concerts, the individual place for recharging batteries and the place for Maori that identifies with a turangawaewae. The place to stand is a meaning for turangawaewae and it the Ruamahanga is a place where we stand together. Many people might not consider a river a place to make stand in a shared space, because it is unstable. The Kahikatea, our tallest native tree has its roots set in an unstable area, a wetland, but the tree is stable because its roots weave with other kahikatea so together the trees grow strong. Our community

can stand with the Ruamahanga too. The most improved river in New Zealand over the last year has been the Ruamahanga. Specifically, it is the stretch of river at the Gladstone bridge. The reason this has happened is because communities have stood by their river. The Masterton district’s waste water treatment has taken a step in the right direction. The farmers in the Tauweru and the Ruamahanga, Gladstone school students, Hurunui-o-Rangi, Greater Wellington’s flood protection people, that council’s policy and regulation and Carterton District’s approach to water races have all taken their steps to caring for their river. We can do better by taking the next step until we can say, “The river is us and we are the river”.

FREE SERVICE

We know that caring for a loved one at home is a precious time. We also understand that towards the end, or at times of crisis, caregivers can become exhausted from nights of broken sleep. Hospice Wairarapa work alongside Kahukura Palliative nurses and fund the placement of a Registered Nurse or Health Care Assistant into the home for a few nights to give the family a chance to catch up on nights of broken sleep, con dent that the nurse or assistant will wake the caregiver or whānau if needed. Our Hospice in the Home night carer service is put in place when our Clinical Services Manager, G.P, a Kahukura nurse or the family make a request to be supported in this way. As soon as we receive the request the Kahukura palliative nurses will seek to find the appropriate level of professional support to meet the patient’s care requirements. We will endeavour to provide the care at the time it is requested and needed, but there will be times when we may have to wait a few

days to engage the nurse or assistant due to availability of sta . The family or whānau will be kept informed and will be advised of the day/s the care will be provided. Usually that care package is in place from 10pm until 7am. The caregiver will introduce their loved one to the nurse or assistant who will look after them that night and orientate them to things in the home. The caregiver must be on site during the night support provision. The nurse or health care assistant will be fully briefed about the care the patient requires, and the family will also share information with the nurse or healthcare assistant before they go off to bed. In the morning the nurse or assistant will complete documentation about how the night went and talk to the Kahukura specialist nurse about the evening of care Hospice has funded.

New wheels for Members of the Greytown Volunteer Fire Brigade are showing that not only are they good at providing a trusted emergency service in South Wairarapa, they’re also pretty slick at fundraising. Desperate for a new operational support vehicle, in typical volunteer firefighter fashion they have rolled up their sleeves to tackle the challenge of raising the minimum $52,000 required. Although not recognised by the national organisation, Fire & Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), operational support vehicles are a “key piece of kit” for provincial brigades, according to Keith Pedley, Greytown Volunteer Fire Brigade secretary and firefighter. “Because our brigade has a pump rescue tender we cover the whole bottom end of southern Wairarapa including Featherston, Martinborough and out towards Ngawai and Tora,” Mr Pedley said. “If there is a motor vehicle accident, for example, we get turned out, so we can often cover some huge distances.” The Greytown Volunteer Fire Brigade responds to around 150 callouts a year, with

Typically, an operational support vehicle carries traffic management equipment, first aid kit and other resources. Equally important is that it provides capacity to transport extra manpower to a call-out than what is possible in the trucks alone. The new vehicle, a van, will replace the existing one which, bought second hand, is now due for replacement. The brigade has been working on the project for about nine months and hope to have the new vehicle join their fleet early in the New Year. Confirmation of a $10,000 grant from the Trust House Foundation is a huge boost as they close in on their target, Mr Pedley said. “We are very grateful

for Trust House’s support. “We are still waiting on a couple of other grant applications, so are on track to get there.” The brigade’s own fundraising initiatives including firewood, donations and assisting people in the community who request help with

instead of just having the bare essentials.” The Greytown Volunteer Fire Brigade currently has 28 volunteers. Mr Pedley said volunteer fire brigades are an integral part of communities. “I think people in the

Tim Nelson How Lee Child writes bestsellers

Keep busy

Stan Lee died recently at the age of 95. During his lifetime, Lee created some of the most iconic characters in comic history, including Spiderman, Ironman and The Hulk. Stan Lee’s life was also full of challenges and some sadness, especially the death of one of his two daughters. Throughout his life Stan Lee remained working, right up until the time of his death. When asked what got him through the many challenging times he faced over his lifetime his response was that he always kept busy; having something to do gave him purpose, satisfaction and joy.

I heard a fascinating interview on National Radio in which Kim Hill talked with author Lee Child about his career, the main character in his books, and his process for writing. I was particularly interested in the approach that he has used to write over 20 hugely successful bestselling novels. Lee Child doesn’t plan or research, he simply just starts writing, without even knowing what the next paragraph will be about. He feels that this gives him the freedom he needs to be creative and it clearly works, as his books are extremely popular. Later on in the interview, he gives a clue as to why he is able to do this, this being that he has a huge knowledge of trivia which he is able to draw upon as he writes. To me this demonstrates the power of knowledge and how it supports creativity; Lee Child doesn’t learn things for a purpose, but the knowledge he acquires is a powerful source of content to support his writing.

You don’t need to go all in, adopt the OMD approach instead

Sometimes new habits that we set for ourselves seem like a great idea at the time but prove to be too difficult to maintain because the initial bar is set too high. A better approach can be to make small changes in one particular area, as is the focus of Suzy Cameron’s new book OMD (one meal a day).

How to become a mathematics genius

Suzy is a passionate vegan, but she realises that the vegan diet isn’t necessarily for everyone. Instead she recommends the OMD approach in which we choose to make just the one meal daily a vegan one. Doing this potentially has a hugely positive impact on both your health and the

environment, and, in adopting this approach, there’s always the option of the cheeseburger when you have that meat and cheese craving.

There’s plenty of awesomeness

In an interview with author Neil Pasricha he shares how his life was at an absolute low point

when his marriage fell apart and his best friend took his own life within a very short period of time. For therapy Neil decided to set up a blog in which he shared one awesome thing every day. The secret to doing the blog was to keep many of the awesome ideas as those things that can happen on

Opportunity to ‘holiday’ at Kandahar for Wairarapa elders It may not be your usual holiday destination, but Masterton’s Kandahar Home is reminding those caring for older family members that the rest home is available to help this holiday season. Kandahar Home and Court manager Peter Newman says Enliven’s respite service gives family carers a chance to take a break, while their older family members spend time enjoying all that the home has to offer. “It takes a lot of emotional strength to be a carer, and burnout can be a real and chronic issue. At Christmas time, additional family commitments can make things even harder for carers trying to juggle all their duties. “Taking time away to refresh and recharge your batteries, even for just a little while, can make a big difference to your wellbeing and bring back some of the light and joy we should all be enjoying at Christmas.” At Kandahar, carers can access short-term respite services for their elders, which Peter says can offer families greater flexibility during the holiday season. “A lot of families tell us that respite services can make organising a trip away or managing family commitments easier. It also offers carers greater peace of mind as they know their loved ones will be safe, secure and well looked after while they’re here,” Peter explains. Kandahar Home and sister site, Kandahar Court, both follow the elder-centred Enliven philosophy, which encourages elders to enjoy companionship, spontaneity,

Sole Food

Shirley Nightingale It has been a mad, mad month so far. Imagine having to pack up 18,000 books and trundle them 300 metres to another location and then try and get them all on the right shelf in the right order again and all in only two weeks whilst stocktaking them at the same time. While I am writing this, we are only half way through the two weeks, the computer program for the stocktake has had a hissy fit, we have run out of boxes for books and had a number of small, unpleasant surprises hidden away. Oh, the things that crawl in when you aren’t looking. Still, not as bad as one of my colleagues who speared a forkful of her lovely, healthy salad only to find an enormous cockroach skewered on the end of the fork next to a piece of tomato and cucumber – that was a really retchy moment (is that actually a word or did I make it up – still it is quite accurate.) I suppose the only thing

worse would be finding a half-eaten one on the end of the fork. Enough of this nonsense, we have lovely Christmas and holiday food to look forward to and then, of course, the days and days of dieting to remove all that lovely Christmas food from around the waist. There are a few people out there who have those fantastic genes where they just don’t put on weight no matter what they eat – if you are one of those people, then please appreciate that we are all extremely envious of your ability and enjoy your genes. Constantly having to watch what you eat and monitor your weight is really depressing and also, not much fun. There is a lot of fun to be had in the month of December. All the Christmas parades are lining up in front of us, although some of the fun has gone as there is not much lolly flinging going on any more. The anticipation of a hand throwing lollies out

Christmas parades are in full swing this month, with the next ones coming up in South Wairarapa this weekend. PHOTO/JADE CVETKOV

and the bouncing up and down willing someone to throw some at you is really exciting – being sedately offered a basket and conscientiously only taking 1 or 2 is a bit boring. I want to bounce up and down and scramble around on the ground grabbing as many as I possibly can (anyone would think I was still a small child!). So, having had both the Carterton and Masterton ones, we only have two more to go. Featherston’s parade is

on December 8 at 12pm; Martinborough’s is also on December 8 at 5pm. The Madcaps group are putting a carol singalong on after the parade in Martinborough Square which should be good too. I am part of that group and will endeavour to prance around on stage with them but may be too tied up with library moving matters to do so. The Extravaganza Fair on December 8 in QEII park also looks like it is worth a visit as does the

Carterton street party on December 9. Contrary to my declared intention of getting all the Christmas shopping done well in advance, I haven’t purchased a thing yet so may have to get out to as many events as possible to stock up. Must off as I have run over my word allowance and Emily may not send me a Christmas card if I am too naughty. Happy Christmas and happy holidays everyone, see you in the New Year.

‘The best fun you can have

Rural

Eli Hill A form of transport dating back thousands of years has become a competitive sport for a small group of Wairarapa carriage drivers. For members of the Wairarapa Shafts and Wheels Driving Association, the horse always goes before the cart – or more correctly, the carriage. President Bob Macfarlane runs his horses on a few hectares near Masterton, and began carriage driving about eight years ago when he joined the association. Macfarlane said the group of five to six competitive members came to the sport for different reasons. “For me it’s about using a horse to do something it has been used for hundreds of years and knowing that you’ve got all that historic background behind you,” he says. “Then there’s the sheer pleasure of it, some people say it’s the best fun you can have sitting down.” The association held its annual graded dressage weekend at Clareville Showgrounds last Saturday and Sunday. Attended by 25 carriage drivers from Taranaki, Manawatu, Hawkes bay

and Wairarapa the event tested drivers control over their horses, through a series of challenges that grew progressively harder. Also raced over the weekend was a 15-gate cone course, and a 7km marathon race. Macfarlane said the key to the sport is the drivers’ relationship with the horse. “It’s all about teaching the horse that you’re in control, and that they can trust you to not put them in danger. “I’ve been out driving and had a milk tanker pass me and the horse hasn’t even flinched.” The cone course requires competitors to pass through a series of cone ‘gates’ with balls balanced on top of them. Space is tight, with the 1.4m carriage having to pass through a 1.6m gap. Should a competitor knock the ball off a cone they receive a three-point deduction, and there is also a time limit based on the horse’s size. Macfarlane estimates only three percent of competitors make it through the course without knocking over a cone. Carriage driving has something of a royal pedigree. It became a favourite

pastime of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who took up the sport after retiring from polo when he turned 50. The Duke represented Great Britain in three European and six world championships and was instrumental in setting out the international rules for horse driving trials.

The sport has taken off in Europe, where carriage drivers ride teams of four horses, in both indoor and outdoor events Macfarlane has been to the European races and said some attracted crowds of 60,000 people. “It’s a professional sport up there, they’re driving big 16-17 hand [high]

horses and there’s all the big sponsorships.” New Zealand horses are generally smaller, with most between 11 and 12 hands high. Welsh ponies are popular among the carriage drivers due to their strength and pulling ability. Macfarlane said New Zealanders preferred

smaller teams because they were safer than bigger horses and required less assistance. “Ponies are popular because they are easier to handle than the big horses. “If anything goes wrong with the big horses you don’t have much to go on. “The most important thing with the horses is to

never let go of the reigns. “When you hold the reigns, you have control of the horse.” Macfarlane said he trains two to three times a week, and often meets other members of the association to go for “picnic drives” down country roads without much traffic. While some take up the sport as a safer alternative to horseback riding, there are still risks involved. In April last year Macfarlane’s horse took fright and he was flipped over a fence, breaking his neck. While the injury put

Macfarlane off driving for a little while, after a few months he found himself back in the carriage. Like Prince Philip, most of the Wairarapa carriage drivers are over 50, and a number of them come from riding backgrounds. “A lot of older people make the switch from horse riding, you’re less likely to fall off a carriage and plenty of the skills from horse-riding can be transferred to carriage driving. “We do have some younger people learning to drive, but the cost of owning a carriage makes

it more for the older generations,” Macfarlane said. A driver can pay anywhere from $1000 to $20,000 for a carriage depending on the quality, but finding one isn’t too difficult. Macfarlane said there are more than 100 carriages lying in sheds across the country, remnants from when they were used more regularly. Not going for a cake walk

Wai Write

Ngaire Rawlings

Sylvia, Jim, Eddy and Dave were returning to the Sunny Rest Retirement Home from their walk when a taxi arrived. A beautiful woman, immaculate from head to toe, emerged. The new arrival frowned as she tapped her foot and looked around. Her face lit up when ever-helpful Jim, offered a hand. Dave and Eddy exchanged grinning high fives. Sylvia glanced down at her old t-shirt and shorts and felt her heart give an uneasy thud of misgiving as Jim accompanied the woman inside. After tea, she found the new arrival sitting in “her chair” in the TV room. Jim was in his usual chair too. Right beside her. Sylvia’s throat dried as she saw them talking and laughing. She spoke through tight lips. “Excuse me, but this is where I sit.” The newcomer looked her up and down and eased back, “but, there’s no names on them,” she turned a dazzling smile on Jim, Dave and Eddy, “are there boys?”. All three shook their

PHOTO/GETTY IMAGES

heads in perfect unison. She smirked, “I’m Daphne.” Sylvia flushed. “Sylvia. Actually, I’ve changed my mind, I’m going to my room.” Jim looked concerned. “But we always watch Coro. Are you okay Sylvia?” She nodded but knew seeing the two of them together would be unbearable. Alone, she slumped, fuming. Was this woman targeting Jim? Sylvia knew he favoured a casual simple approach to life. A no-frills type. Would Daphne, a high-

maintenance type, be suited to him? She found out next morning. Jim greeted Daphne with a soppy, infatuated grin as she sat herself in Sylvia’s usual place, shooting a triumphant look at Sylvia as she did so. From then on, they were inseparable. Sylvia would see Jim, tugging at unaccustomed ties, escorting Daphne on shopping trips or salon visits. Sylvia couldn’t sleep and lost weight, unlike Jim who seemed to have gained some. She continued walking, missing his company. A few times as she’d set

off recently, she’d seen him frown and felt his gaze following her. She stopped as she realised she had one trick up her sleeve. She knew the real Jim, what made him tick, what made him happy. Next morning she asked, “Daphne, do you like walking?” Daphne gave a fastidious shudder, “Ew, getting all grubby and sweaty? No thanks.” Sylvia smiled. “How about you Jim? Fancy doing a long walk with me today? I’ll bring scroggin.” “Too right!” Jim leapt up, pulling off his tie, “I’ve missed our walks, and your scroggin.”

He looked down, reddening, “and you.” Sylvia smiled. She saw Daphne put on a pretty pout “But I thought we’d go into town Jimmy”, she wheedled, “for coffee. . . and some delicious cakes?” “No thanks Daphne.” Jim turned a wink at Sylvia, “I’ve realised overprocessed sugar’s not good for me.” As they left, Sylvia waved back at Daphne, her first two digits staying up a little longer than necessary. They chuckled, hearing the hopeful chorus from Dave and Eddy, each declaring, “I like cakes.” • Ngaire Rawlings is a member of the Blairlogie Writer’s Group. • The group usually meets on the last Friday of each month in the Wairarapa Genealogy Society Rooms next to the Archive on Queen St in Masterton.

CRICKET

Jake Beleski The semifinalists in the local Umpires Cup 40-over cricket competition have been confirmed. The Rathkeale College First XI finished in first place and will play Greytown in the semifinals this weekend, while Marist Old Boys and Red Star will meet for the second week in a row in the other semifinal. In Saturday’s final round of matches before the playoffs, Marist Old Boys and Greytown ensured they would head into the playoffs with winning momentum behind them. Marist OB took on Red Star at Park Sports Ground in Masterton, and it was the former who won the toss and elected to bowl first. Red Star’s opening batsmen Troy Burling was in fine form as he scored 58 off 77 balls, including 11 fours and a six. The middle and lower order offered little resistance, however, and regular wickets ensured Red Star could only manage 155 all out in 38 overs. The only other batsmen to reach double figures were Tim Burling [18 off 47], Mark Sprowson [23

off 48] and Morgan Austin [28 off 16]. Austin’s rapid knock included three sixes and gave Red Star a total that was defendable if they bowled well enough. Darin Towgood was the pick of the bowlers for Lansdowne, finishing with 4-12 from his three overs. Opening bowler Keith Pullman also produced an impressive spell, finishing with 3-15 from eight tight overs. In reply, Marist opener Jared van Deventer

compiled 28 off 26 balls, but regular wickets saw them end up in a world of trouble at 89-7 in the 24th over. It was up to the lower order to save the day, and they did just that with Towgood scoring a crucial 19 at No 8, and Amish Pal hitting 26 off 17 at No 10. Marist OB eventually got over the line in 39.1 overs with two wickets to spare, to secure second spot on the competition table. Craig Stoneley was the star with the ball for Red

Hedge Trimmers

Star, taking 5-38 from his eight overs and getting his side agonisingly close to victory. Daniel Murray and Troy Burling also picked up a wicket apiece, while there was one run out. Red Star will be hoping to reverse that result in the rematch this weekend, with plenty more at stake this time around. In Saturday’s other match, Greytown took the spoils in their winnertakes-all clash with Lansdowne in Greytown.

Both teams knew a win would get them into the semifinals, but Lansdowne were never in the hunt as they were bundled out for just 81 in 22 overs. In their reply, Greytown cruised home to win by six wickets, with 14 overs to spare. The Rathkeale First XI finished the round robin with 17 points after winning three of their five matches, while also securing three bonus points. Marist OB, Red Star and Greytown were all tied on 14 points, but Marist OB finished in second place because they won three matches, while both Red Star and Greytown only won two. Red Star finished third because they had a superior run rate to Greytown. Lansdowne missed out on the playoffs after finishing the competition with six points, while the Rathkeale Second XI were sixth with two points from their five matches. The Rathkeale First XI’s semifinal against Greytown will take place at Rathkeale College this Saturday [1pm], while Marist OB will play Red Star at Park Sports Ground [1pm] once again.
