o sung Dooley Wilson in the classic 1942 film Casablanca. Almost 80 years later, those lyrics still ring as true as ever. Love has never gone out of date, and nor have weddings. Last year, according to the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs, there were 20,949 marriages and civil unions registered to New Zealand residents. 15,009 were first marriages or civil unions, 5,916 were remarriages or civil unions, and 24 couples, both same-sex and opposite-sex, transferred between a civil union and a marriage. The number of marriages and civil unions has remained stable over the past 20 years, it says. When interviewed for our 2019 Wairarapa Weddings booklet, Wairarapa Bride of the Year committee member Nell McDonald said she and her fellow members and volunteers had wondered at times whether the competition would have a future as attitudes to marriage change.

But 50 years on from the first competition, won by Janice Humphries at the Masterton Intermediate School hall, Wairarapa Bride of the Year is still going strong, and still raising money for Plunket in Wairarapa. Lovers still say “I do”, and brides still enjoy reliving that special day, wearing their wedding gown one more time. A wedding is still a major milestone in a couple’s lives, and a display of love and commitment to each in front of family and friends. So naturally, couples put a lot of thought into how they want their wedding to be. Whether it is small or large, no wedding comes to pass without a myriad of decisions being made. It is often the first and only time a couple will organise a large public gathering, especially if the guest list is long.

To make a budget you will need an accurate assessment of what money you will have available to spend, including savings, contributions from your parents, and any other sources - some couples ask their parents, grandparents, etc if they are happy to pay for specific parts of the wedding, such as the wedding cake. The further away the wedding day is, the more time you will have to save. It will also give you more time to research and find good deals. Make a priority list of the wedding elements that are important to you and what percentage of your budget you want to spend on each of these.

Whatever your dream wedding is, there are steps you can take to make sure it comes within budget and at a price you can afford.

Some costs will inevitably blow out while hopefully you might get a pleasant surprise or two as well. Do factor unexpected costs into your budget. In other words, give yourselves a buffer so you do not go over your budget. Probably around 15 percent for overshoots and the small expenses you never think of, will do it. And once you have your budget, stick to it. Track your spending with a ledger that includes both estimated and actual costs as they incur. You can start out with ball park figure estimates but by the time you are finalising your budget, you should have a pretty clear idea of the actual cost of each component of your wedding.
Wairarapa Weddings 2019
Businesses with good reputations have earned them over years. Ask family and friends who they recommend for suppliers. You may not save money but you will avoid over charging or poor products and services. Get all quotes, agreements and confirmations in writing and keep them as a record in case of any disputes. Clever planning of your wedding can mean you get more for the money you spend.
For instance, an all-inclusive wedding package can be more affordable than hiring all the different elements required. If your dream is a wedding on an isolated piece of Wairarapa coast, then a funky theme that makes the most out of simplicity and the setting might not require services that add the travel cost.
Experience counts for a lot so talk to friends who have already got married and see what worked best for them. Don’t be afraid to omit elements which aren’t important to you, but do include those that are, even if you have to spend a bit more. Don’t go cheap on the things that really matter to you. It’s your wedding - you’re worth it!

ventCover insurance is a relatively new product in New Zealand, although it is common overseas. It is now available in Wairarapa through Provincial Insurance Brokers, and insurance adviser Kris Towgood believes it is important that as many people as possible know about this type of cover before an accidental loss occurs. “While it is not a common insurance at the moment, brides and grooms are becoming more aware the cover is available. “Event planners are more and more discussing this cover with brides and grooms, as the insurance covers their costs too, which is helping.” The insurance covers the following: • Cancellation or postponement – it covers any irrecoverable expenses should the unexpected happen - but not because of a change of heart.
eligible for a claim on the non-refundable deposits that you have paid. • Transport – cover for the irrecoverable costs or additional expense should your contracted vehicle hire firm, or any other person providing wedding transport let you down. • Hired equipment – cover for the loss or accidental damage to hired equipment, including marquees, tents, gazebos, chairs, tables, furniture or lighting equipment hired during the wedding period. • Public liability – cover the bride and groom or any person for which the bride or groom would be legally liable for, while also paying for legal costs and expenses in defending any claim in respect to injury, loss or damage. • Honeymoon – Cover if your prebooked honeymoon is not taken as a direct result of your wedding being cancelled.
• Photography and video – if your professional photographer or video operator lets you down or the film/negatives or video is lost or damaged, a payment for the expenses incurred to retake might be eligible.
There are four Wedding cover packages available, all of which cover all the above scenarios with only the Honeymoon cover attracting an additional premium if chosen.
• Failure of supplier – if a wedding supplier fails to meet their contractual obligations, you may be

limits increasing with each package. For example, the hired equipment cover in the Bronze package has a limit of $5000, whereas the Platinum package has a $20,000 limit for hired equipment cover. Anyone planning a wedding should consider wedding insurance at the earliest possible opportunity and build the costs into their wedding budget, says Kris. He points out that the EventCover insurance can extend to a wide range of events such as local community festivals or even corporate conferences. Kris and the team at Provincial are happy to discuss EventCover insurance in more detail with anyone interested in the product.

ake-up begins with the skin. Start a thorough day and night skincare routine three to six months ahead. Always use a professional. They use quality products, know how to make you look your best and how to make the make-up last the whole day. Your make-up trial should be five to three weeks before the wedding, and allow at least 45 minutes to an hour for make-up application on your wedding day. If you are going to have a fake tan, have a tan before your make-up trial so your artist can see what colour your skin will be on the day.

What’s trending in the world of
bridal gowns?
It depends on who you talk to but it does appear that dominant trends don’t exist anymore. Many designs are now an option for brides in any year.
A
ccording to www. harpersbazaar.com, “The global runways – from New York bridal week to Paris Haute Couture – are giving the 2019 bride lots of thematic and fashion remixes to work with. Think Louis XIV-inspired ruffles, ‘70s disco, and sleek silhouettes fit for metropolitan minimalists. Classic bridal archetypes are getting an overhaul as well; the beach bride is a little more gamine and sultry than bohemian, and the rustic bride has taken on a new polish, via our favourite It-girl trend, the Fashion Fairy Nymph.”
At www.vogue.com “the common refrain among designers was that definitive trends don’t really exist anymore. Many of them have grown out of “trendy” territory to become near-ubiquitous, like removable skirts and off-theshoulder dresses, which we now see every season. And as more brides are buying multiple outfits for their weddings and events, there’s no longer a single “look” they have to stick to; maybe they’ll choose a groovy jumpsuit for the rehearsal, a classic gown for the wedding, and a sequined mini for the reception.”

What to look for in a
marquee supplier
Marquee weddings are popular in Wairarapa. But there are things you need to watch out for.
S
helley Mason of Festival Hire in Masterton offers a few tips.
• What qualifications do they and their staff hold? Are they APEX accredited? APEX is a training and accreditation scheme designed for persons and companies operating within the marquee industry in New Zealand. • What wind rating does the marquee have? New Zealand has wind zone ratings from low to extra high. All parts of Wairarapa are prone to big wind gusts. • Does the marquee need a council consent? All marquees over 100sqm require a consent. • What fire rating does the marquee have? Ideally it should be nonflammable. • What contingency plans does the marquee supplier have if the client has any concerns on the day? • How far away will the supplier be on the day if there are any issues? Ideally they need to be within a maximum of one hour’s drive to sort out any problems or last minute changes. • Do all the electrical plugs have a “tag and tested” sticker? Is someone easily available for any power issues such as lights going out?
• Is the marquee pictured in promotional material going to be the same as the real thing when it arrives? “You might think you are getting a beautiful white marquee but what arrives is old, mouldy and cream.” • If you are planning to have your wedding outside and not use a
marquee, is it worth the risk and worry? You will be thinking about the weather the whole time. • Shelley also advises that the biggest thing is to be very cautious about where you save money, “because sometimes that is where it will cost you the most.”

T
able to accommodate steam punk or country & western.
he big trend in Wairarapa for the past few years has been weddings with a simple, often rustic, charm.
The groom and groomsmen can also embrace this style with a tweed suit or something in earthy tones, down to the brown leather shoes.
A rustic theme lends itself to a personal touch and can combine elements of vintage, country and DIY with a mix of the formal with casual. It is also a style that suits weddings in Wairarapa where we have such beautiful and varied venues and locations. By choosing a venue that suits your wedding style, you can get the style you are after without having to spend too much on decorations. While the formal elements of the wedding service remain more or less the same, it is the setting and contributing elements that make a wedding rustic.

This starts with the attire of the bridal party, by choosing a relaxed, carefree and romantic wedding dress, perhaps with a flower crown instead of a veil, with sympathetic outfits for the bridesmaids. Of course, if you are into Lord Of The Rings or the Middle Ages, Rusticana dovetails perfectly. It might even be
Flowers and foliage are a natural element of any rustic theme. Foliage enriched backdrops and hangings are popular but require advanced planning and forethought to see if they will be practical in the venue you have chosen. You may be able to attach florals to existing structures. You florist will be able to help you choosing a suitable rustic look for your bouquet and table settings. if you do use white table cloths, then a hessian runner will add a rustic touch. You can also wrap hessian around vases and tie with string, or another suggestion is simply going with attractive glass jars for your table floral pieces.Dishes made using fresh produce will accentuate the country flavour of your wedding.
Make the most of your rustic setting, whether it is a vineyard, farm, or hotel or motel (Wairarapa is fortunate to have many of these located in beautiful settings), by maximising your time outdoors, from a gorgeous outdoor ceremony to a cocktail hour in the warm glow of twilight.

Making a The “Guest Experience” is a new hot-button topic in the wedding world.
B
ut at heart, it is built upon the oldfashioned concept of keeping your guests happy and entertained at your wedding That said, the term recognises that times and expectations have changed. The typical Kiwi wedding of 50 years ago would include a formal ceremony followed by adults standing round drinking a rum and coke or wine while the children got bored and the formal photographs got taken. This was followed by the formal parts of the wedding breakfast with the informal entertainment not starting till the music got going.

hula hoop exponent or carnival style amusement. Don’t forget to think ahead about the needs of your older guests, whether it’s mobility issues or a loud band or DJ.
What is needed is more engagement. For instance, menus can be more than just a list of food choices. They can include some witty comments about the bride and groom, information about the bride and groom, something about the upcoming band or DJ, or some personal thoughts.
You might want to allocate a bridesmaid or groomsman to keep an eye on elderly guests to make sure they are happy and comfortable. Children also need special consideration, such as their own specially decorated table with arts and crafts, wedding colouring books or simple crafts.
There is plenty of room for pleasant surprises such as classical band that plays pop hits or some dance floor props such as glow sticks.
You could also organise a baby sitter and room nearby stocked with DVDs, games, toys and snacks, with parents able to periodically check in.

he wedding cake is one of the stars at any wedding, rich in symbolism and meaning, the cutting of it a special moment. But like so many aspects of the wedding, it needs to be well thought out in advance.
Book with your baker as early as possible and go in for a tasting session, ask questions and maybe bring in colour swatches or images to give the baker an idea of what you are wanting. When choosing flavours think about how it fits in with the wedding breakfast.

Your cake will likely be on display before it is cut and shared around the guests so think about an appropriate setting. For example, it could have its own table, with the cake set on a table cloth that matches the colour scheme, decorated with flower petals and surrounded with fairy lights. Determine when you will bring the cake out and cut it. After the toasts during the reception seems the most logical time, when everyone is still seated and focused on the wedding party.

Marriage
&the older couple
T
he late 1960s and early 1970s had many young New Zealanders for the first time living together as couples without getting married. Now, it seems, some of them regret missing out on the romance of the wedding ceremony, and the public commitment of their love to each other, and have a new fondness for marriage. These second thoughts are leading some older couples to tie the knot for the first time. Then there are those who have never previously been married but had several relationships. This time round they want to make it official with a wedding ceremony. Finally there are older people who have been married once, or even
twice, and this time round want their wedding to be different to the one before. Whether this is your first, second or third wedding, age should really have very little to do with the type of wedding you have. That said, the older bride may be uncertain about what to wear on her wedding day. You can definitely opt for white or ivory if you like, as the rules for who can and cannot wear white went a long time ago. First-time brides are now wearing colours, so there’s no reason older brides can’t wear white. If you love a certain style of dress but want a slightly more demure look, you can engage the services of a seamstress to make suitable alterations.
Situated in Wairarapa, only 4 minutes’ drive away from Pukaha on SH2 We are in an exciting area where native bush meets rural farms with a lovely town nearby
Be clear about which aspects of the wedding celebrations are really important to you - perhaps you missed out on the fairy-tale walk down the aisle first time around. Traditionally, second marriages tend to be smaller affairs. While first weddings are often extravagant, older couples often tone it down for their second wedding. On the other hand, you might decide to have the sort of all-out glorious wedding that you felt like you missed earlier in life. Older people are likely to be more selective about who they invite to their wedding based on who they have a strong personal relationship with. Inviting cousins just because they are your cousins, isn’t going to happen.

If you have a bridal party, it is likely to be a much more varied mix of family and friends. You might like to include your or your partner’s children to make it more of a family affair. If one or both of you already have
children, you can include them in the formal parts of the ceremony. For instance, if they are musicians, they can play a musical interlude as part of it, or perhaps they can read a passage on love.
If your former marriage dissolved a long time ago, you’ve been coparenting for ages, and you have managed to build a friendship, you may want to invite your former spouse or partner.
Some couples invite their former spouses or partners and others don’t.
The main thing is to make the wedding just the way you want it.

air is such an important part of the bride’s appearance. Here’s how to get it right Always book a trial appointment, whether you have had the same stylist for years, or they are someone new. This is especially important if you’re trying out a new style. Choose your dress before you choose your hair style. You will want a style that complements the dress. Have your dress fitting the same day as your hair trial. You will be able to see how the two go together well before your wedding day. Don’t make a drastic change right before the big day and don’t choose something completely out of character. ncreasing numbers of couples are holding a wedding vow renewal ceremony, for many different reasons from anniversaries to marking the passing of a difficult time in their lives together.
comfortable and match your bridal style.
For others, the ceremony offers the chance to celebrate the wedding they never had.
Meet your stylists for a final touch up on your hair colour and length. Explain to your stylist your preferred hairstyle for your wedding day.
Ceremonies can vary from a lavish style, to just the couple renewing their vows before a celebrant such as their priest.
Take lots of photos to your hair trial to help the stylist get a good idea of what you have in mind. They will be able to tailor the look to your own features to make it work even better.
A couple can renew their vows any time they want, but having a reason for doing so can make the occasion feel more special.
If you are going to colour hair before the wedding do it at least a week before so the colour (especially if there is a toner used) has time to soften. Decide whether you want to have your hair done in a salon or if the hairdresser needs to come to the venue. There will be an extra charge for this but it is more convenient and less stressful. Make sure you schedule plenty of time for hair and make-up.
You can repeat the same vow you made on your wedding day or write a new one with the focus on your continued love for your spouse. The vow should focus on the positives and the future ahead, instead of bringing up the hardships you’ve overcome. If your officiant is a minister, ask if you can include something personal along with the traditional vow.
IT IS YOUR TIME TO SMILE
Because this is not a wedding ceremony, there are plenty of options for how the ceremony is conducted. You can walk down the aisle together or bring your children with you. You can give each other your old rings to symbolise a renewed faith in your marriage or exchange new ones. Or give each other new ones. Another option is to engrave something new on your existing rings. Or maybe share a new tattoo together. You don’t need witnesses the second time around but that doesn’t mean you can’t have those nearest and dearest beside you - maybe members of the original bridal party. truck thoughts F
ood trucks are showing no sign of diminishing in popularity at Wairarapa weddings. But there are a few things to think about if you are planning to use one. • Don’t forget to let your venue know that you’ll be having food truck catering. Ask about parking, electricity hook-ups, weather options, and about space to queue up. • Food trucks are considered outside catering. The venue you have chosen may not allow outside catering that is not on their list of preferred vendors, or any outside catering whatsoever. • Food trucks will also require set up and take down time, so check with your venue about any time restrictions. • Will the food truck be able to get into the venue, park and leave easily? • Will the food truck supply any lighting? • How far ahead can you book your food truck? Some food trucks may not want to book too far ahead to leave open the opportunity for upcoming events. • How much food will you require for the size of your guest list? Include an estimate of how guests might want second helpings.

• Do they offer a set list of options or is it happy to customise the menu? • While using a food truck may sound cheaper, it may not be, as many catering companies also supply the linens, dishes and glassware, silverware, staff and trash removal. Ask your food truck vendor what they provide. • Will you need more than one truck? One truck will lead to long queues if the guest list is long.
• Limiting the menu options may reduce the waiting time with less prep work and more streamlined service. • Limit the Menu Options. It will limit the amount of prep work the staff has to do, allow them to make some things ahead of time or during slow periods, and make things a little more streamlined. • Avoid seating near the food truck. You don’t want tables right next to
the generators or guests queuing for food. • Will the guests queue for food or will waiting staff bring it to them? • Ask someone to politely herd guests back into the dining area after they get their food, or food truck staff may be able to help with that. • Food truck vendors often cater for large events so don’t be afraid to ask their opinion.

The easiest way to find what you are looking for is simply to do a search on www.govt.nz Getting a marriage licence Before you get married, you need to apply for a licence. A licence confirms it’s legal for you to marry. It costs $150 if you use a celebrant, and $240 if you get married in a registry office. What you need to know • You need to arrange your licence at least 3 working days before you get married. • It expires after 3 months. • If you’re using a celebrant, they have separate fees. • Only one of you needs to complete the application, but you need information about both of you. You can apply online at marriages.services.govt.nz Finding a celebrant Only registered celebrants can perform weddings or

lanning a registry-style ceremony for your big day? If you live outside Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch, the Department Of Internal Affairs has made some changes to make things easier for you.
“Our Marriage Services webpage makes it easy to plan your registry ceremony and get your marriage licence quickly online.
Instead of having to head down to the local Courthouse or Council, you can now get married in a registrystyle wedding right at home – and you can book it all easily online. DIA’s marriage services website has a list of validated celebrants across New Zealand. You can arrange with your celebrant to have your ceremony at home or a special location, or your celebrant may be able to provide a location for you. Jeff Montgomery, Registrar-General Births, Deaths and Marriages, says New Zealanders have become accustomed to services,
“Using our online service means less time is spent on the phone, at a counter, or mailing paper forms, freeing up more time to plan your future.” The new registry-style ceremony will come at the same set cost of $90, and the same rules will apply for the ceremony. Registry ceremonies will still be held at four of the Department of Internal Affairs’ sites, located in Auckland, Wellington, Manukau and Christchurch. To plan your registry-style wedding, or for more information, visit: www.govt.nz/browse/family-andwhanau/getting-married/registryceremonies/

air is such an important part of the bride’s appearance. When it comes to your hair and make-up, you want to look like yourself as much as possible. Stick to the styles that make you feel most

ncreasing numbers of couples are holding a wedding vow renewal ceremony, for many different reasons from anniversaries to marking the passing of a difficult time in their lives together.
comfortable and match your bridal style.
Some couples celebrate with a small gathering at home, others with a large reception. Some hold now reception whatsoever. At the end of the day, the wedding vow renewal ceremony can be any way you want it, as long as it includes the vow.

Going
green
A
green or an eco-friendly wedding is any wedding where the couple tries to decrease the impact of their event on the planet, according to Wikipedia. Couples plan their weddings by integrating eco-friendly alternatives, such as eco-friendly invitations, flowers, dress, photography and more, it says. • One key concept for keeping a wedding eco-friendly is to ensure that the items being used will not quickly become waste, mainly one-time disposable items such as hosiery, plates, cups, ornaments or wedding favours. Many green weddings have instead opted for borrowed or recycled items. • Another option chosen is to rent items needed for the wedding instead of buying all new equipment/decorations instead to control the amount of waste that could be created.
In other matters that consist of planning a wedding, the main basis is to prevent or reduce all harmful impacts that could be placed on the environment either directly or indirectly by resources used for the wedding.” Here are a few of the many possibilities: • Go paperless – create your own online wedding invites and then email them to friends. • Use a honeymoon registry – couples only get gifts they want and they can indicate environmentally friendly options. This could even be a charity registry. • Reuse and recycle – use items you can reuse or else hire.
THE PERFECT WEDDING VENUE WITH A VIEW
• Use environmentallyconscious businesses. Such businesses often highlight their sustainable philosophy. • Use biodegradable products such as plates and utensils. • Wear a vintage wedding dress. Employ a seamstress to custom-fit it to your figure plus any other alterations to give it a contemporary touch. • Choose a caterer who prides themselves on ethical standards when it comes to the food they source. • Make your wedding cake an organic one. • Use a natural petal confetti or even traditional rice.

W
airarapa may be home to you, but it might be a new world to relatives from Europe, or even friends in Auckland. So you really want to make it more than a one-day experience for them. That way you can spend as much time as possible with your guests and show them the places and activities that make Wairarapa special. One of the advantages of Wairarapa is that it is easy to get to from anywhere in New Zealand or overseas, being from 60 to 90 minutes’ drive from Wellington airport, depending on where your wedding is being held. Guests can arrive a couple of days before the wedding and stay a night or two after it, giving you all plenty of time to share the region’s wineries, cute towns, great outdoors, beautiful beaches and countryside, shopping, long brunches and relaxing spas. Naturally, there will be a lot more time for bonding, which is particularly important if you rarely see some of your guests. Holding a destination wedding will require finalising details much sooner so guests have as much time as possible to book flights and
accommodation. Being a Wairarapa resident or someone who knows it well, you will be able to help them with accommodation.
And if things do go pear-shaped, like say, one of your guests loses their passport, you won’t find yourself suddenly stressed and panicked.

here are one hundred and one trends in wedding flowers in 2019 but a few stand out as being particularly striking. Dried flowers are usually associated with great-grandmother but whether it is a whole bouquet or just the odd dried flower added to an arrangement, this trend is getting bigger. Some say “flower clouds” are the new flower wall, suspended above tables to take floral decoration to a higher level - so to speak. Speaking of flower walls and dramatic floral instalments, if you are planning to have one, check with your venue first to see if this is practically possible, before getting your heart set on an extravagant arch, floral chandelier or hanging flower hoops. Bold flower crowns and woodlandthemed foliage crowns in place of the traditional tiara, are bringing out many brides’ inner pixie. Beautiful flower crowns can be created to suit every style of wedding and complement any flower theme. While not strictly speaking flowers, succulents are finding a place at many

airarapa has a rich assortment of locations and venues to hold your wedding ceremony and reception. The options are only limited by your imagination. Along with your traditional locations like churches, there is no reason why you couldn’t hold your ceremony in a vineyard, art gallery or museum. The reception can be in a hotel, sports complex or country garden. When choosing a venue you have to consider two things - does it align with the overall theme and style of your wedding, and does it fulfil all your practical requirements. One of the first thing to do is to work out how many guests you will be having at your wedding as this will immediately remove any venues that are too small, but also venues that perhaps are too large as well. One of the basic things to find out about a venue is whether it is available

on the day you are planning to hold your wedding. The sooner you start looking, the more chance there is that you won’t be disappointed. Distances need to be considered. For instance, is the venue in a convenient location for guests to travel to from Wellington or Palmerston North and further afield. Is the location a long way for the photographer and other service providers, such as florists, to travel to, as this will add to the cost. Is there accommodation at the venue or nearby? Usually, in Wairarapa there is, from hotels and motels to motorcamps and boarding houses at schools. If you are thinking of holding your wedding in winter and/or during the week, you may find the rates are cheaper. Where will you take photographs?
Is there a park, beach, or rural environment nearby. Some venues have specific onsite locations for photographs such as a garden. If the venue provides its own inhouse caterers, you will have to decide if you like them enough to want to use them. If the venue has no inhouse catering, it will still need a kitchen for the caterers to work from, for instance a community hall. What other facilities does the venue have. For instance, are tables, linen, chairs, plates, silverware and glassware provided, or will you have to rent them yourself? What bar services does it offer. Does it allow BYO. Is there a corkage fee? A venue with its own bar service is convenient, but some couples may be asking their guests to BYO to make their wedding more affordable.

Bride of the Year 2019
makeupbyemilyrose.com
50 years of Wairarapa Bride of the Year Much has changed in the world of weddings over the past 50 years - from bridal gown styles to personalised vows. But one thing has remained constant and that is the annual Wairarapa Bride of the Year Contest, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary. Lansdowne Plunket originally organised the event but it is now run by Masterton Plunket after the two merged in 2015. The very first Bride of the Year event was held at the Masterton Intermediate School hall with the winner being Janice Humphries. Over the years Bride of the Year has been held in various locations, including Hiona School (now Lakeview) for 11 years, Makoura College for two, and Copthorne Solway Park Hotel and Resort, where it first was held for two years in the mid-1970s and then from 1987 until the present time.

“We’d like to thank Copthorne Solway Park for all their help over the years,” says committee member Nell Thomson. “We are also very grateful to the business community for their sponsorship and prizes.” Every year, the competition has three new judges, one male and two female, with no judge taking part more than once. “They don’t interview the brides, but judge them purely on four categories: bridal dress, deportment, general appearance on the catwalk and personality,” said Nell. Money raised from the event helps fund Plunket services for parents and their young children. “While Bride of the Year is a fundraising event for Plunket, it also gives brides the opportunity to wear and share their dresses again,” says Nell.

24 brides will once again

This Friday, 23 August 2019, marks the 50th anniversary of this iconic and popular event. At Copthorne Solway Park at 8pm, 24 brides will once again wear their beautiful wedding dresses and parade along the catwalk to relive their special day.
MASTERTON PLUNKET
The annual Bride of the Year Contest has been organised by Masterton Plunket committees for the past 50 years and has established its own unique place in the Wairarapa social calendar. The contest is open to brides married between 1 August 2018 and 31 July 2019, who were married in Wairarapa, have lived or are living in Wairarapa or whose husband has lived in Wairarapa.
th
ANNIVERSARY
BRIDE OF THE YEAR
There will be a display of previous winners’ gowns from throughout the five decades, showcasing the range of styles during the past 50 years.
It is generously supported by businesses, who provide a wide variety of attractive trophies and prizes. To mark the anniversary, Plunket’s national President, Christine Lake, from Christchurch, will be one of this year’s judges. Points are awarded for deportment, dress, personality and overall appearance. The judges’ marks will be compiled throughout the evening and the final result announced soon after the judging has finished. Tickets include supper and to celebrate, a slice of anniversary cake with supper, and a glass of bubbles on arrival. They are available from Evans’ of Masterton, on the corner of Bannister and Dixon Streets, for $25 (eftpos not available), or from Eventfinda for $26.
Family tradition carried on by 2018 Wairarapa Bride of the Year Charlotte Osborne had just been down to helloworld to book a holiday to Byron Bay with her husband Wiremu before she popped into the Wairarapa Times-Age for this interview. The $1000 voucher Charlotte used to pay for the trip was the chief prize she received for winning last year’s Wairarapa Bride of the Year. Charlotte won wearing a slim sheath gown, with swirls of beading, pearl accents and embroidered motifs creating a V neckline, capped sleeves and a low illusion back with dainty crystal buttons. The Aldora crepe skirt flared to a chapel train of illusion lace appliques, and Charlotte wore her mother’s favourite earrings as her ‘something borrowed’. Her ‘something old’ was her nana Beryl Stuart’s vintage marcasite brooch which was worn as a hair clip.
42
The couple chose not to go on a honeymoon after marrying at Rathkeale College last April. Instead Charlotte went straight back to work in beauty therapy and retail and Wiremu in building, so the Byron Bay trip will be an unofficial honeymoon. The couple’s wedding might have been the last time that Charlotte wore her wedding dress, except for the constant encouragement she was getting to enter Wairarapa Bride of the Year, despite being shy by nature. “I was definitely more nervous than at my wedding and there were 200 people at the wedding, but I knew them all. It definitely took a lot of encouragement.” There was a lot of history to live up to too, with Charlotte’s nana on the founding committee of the Wairarapa Bride of the Year.
“Two of my aunties and a cousin all entered and won!” In the end Charlotte was tipped into entering by her father. “I went down the aisle with him but he didn’t get to stop and take it all in. It’s nice to be part of the spectacle of the ceremony but you don’t get to watch it. He contributed a lot to the wedding so I felt it was something I could give back to him.” Charlotte recommends other brides enter the competition, even if they too suffer from a case of the nerves. “Even though I had to psyche myself up for it, I totally recommend it. It is for a good cause but definitely scary. I couldn’t believe it when my name was called out.” Charlotte’s picture is featured on the previous page.
