Wayne R. Heath: at home in the country Wayne R. Heath has lived a star-studded country life. And he’ll be larger than life at the Wairarapa Music in the County Festival this year. As a youngster in Auckland, Wayne had regular spots at some of the city’s most sought after venues such as The Shiralee and played alongside the likes of Howard Morrison, John Rowles, and Ray Columbus. While living in the home of country music, Nashville in the USA, Wayne hobnobbed with some of the biggest names in the industry. Maddy Bean: with talent in spades Maddy Bean, aged only 18, is a rising star. When she was younger, she would always look forward to coming to the Wairarapa Music in the Country Festival with her grandparents, and never failed to take part in the walk-ups. After two years singing in the Up-andComing section on FRIDAY Sunday, Maddie has earned her right to 4PM. be part of the main SATURDAY lineup. Maddy says 1.30PM she’s looking forward to performing and

wants to thank everyone for making it possible. Winning her first award aged nine, Maddy has won the Coastlands Got Talent show, talent shows at school, and countless house battles at college. While she loves country music, she also takes songs and puts her own spin on them. She loves all the new country/rock music that is coming out. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Maddy and her amazing talent.

Pātea Māori FRIDAY Club: 9.30PM soaring sound and whirling emotion The legendary Pātea Māori Club will be a highlight on Friday 5 January, the opening night of the Wairarapa Music in the Country Festival. Founded in 1967, the Pātea Māori Club is best known for the song Poi E, released soon after Pātea’s freezing works closed. The uplifting anthem conquered uninterested record labels and radio stations at the time and went on to become

Neilson’s adventures include opening for Johnny Cash at age 18, travelling to New Zealand to start her own family, and taking to the streets of Auckland as she searched for her big break. Neilson has now won almost

every music award possible. Her 5th album, Kingmaker, was released in 2022, following Sassafras! in 2018 and Chickaboom! in 2020. All her albums call attention to misogyny, patriarchal structures, and women’s struggles. Described as a ‘revolt’, Kingmaker calls out the men that control the industry and often render women nameless and voiceless. Tami Neilson is using her own voice to force change, born of humble beginnings and a tireless work ethic.
