church or vineyard Wairarapa the ideal location for a wedding

There are a wide variety of unique locations to hold your wedding ceremony in the Wairarapa from beautiful old churches to vineyards to country gardens, along with reception venues to suit all tastes and budgets. In most cases these are conveniently located nearby to all necessary services required for a wedding like florists and hair stylists. There are bound to be great locations close by for photos nearby from parks to the countryside or beach. The Wairarapa consistently offers sunny weather during spring, summer and autumn for a marquee wedding. Accommodation is usually available conveniently nearby from hotels/motels to country cottages but it is wise to encourage guests to make their booking early as many events are held in the Wairarapa throughout the year. Often you will find venues that provide a location for both the ceremony and the reception, and sometimes even accommodation. The region is easy for guests to reach from both the north and south and offers a great weekend get-away for them while they are here for the wedding. Guests will also find the roads easy to find their way around, with non-stressful traffic volumes.

SOME THOUGHTS ON A MARQUEE WEDDING Holding your wedding and reception under a big tent in a special location always makes for a memorable day. But there are some things to consider. The first of these is always the site – is there power, is it flat, what is the wind exposure? Are there cooking facilities on site, or will they need to be brought in?

What will you do for toilet facilities? What lighting will you use? Three popular choices are fairy lights, exposed lanterns and exposed chandeliers. Consider the grounds in both wet and dry weather. Will you have a dance floor? Finally, what will you use for seats, tables and table dressings?

The Lolly Jar can provide the perfect sweet treat for your special occasion. Choose from an extensive variety of lollies from all over the world. Fantastic for favors and brilliant for buffets. We also have a range of gorgeous candy buffet jars available for hire or purchase.

Taste, presentation and service, all crucial catering concerns THE NAKED TRUTH ABOUT WEDDING CAKES

Food and beverages are a crucial part of any wedding. They are one of the biggest costs and leave a lasting impression. Before you book your caterer, you will have decided on a date and venue and also the theme or general presentation of your wedding.

Naked cakes are all the rage but they aren’t the stereotype-smashing wedding cake trend. By “naked we mean not having icing covering the entire cake, allowing the inside layering to be seen, in a very aesthetically pleasing way such as alternating layers of colours.

Metallic cakes are also trending from gold and silver to bronze detailing, as well as black accents and detailing. Some weddings are forgoing multiple tier wedding cakes for a single tier cake or even two or three single tiered cakes. At the end of the day, a successful wedding cake can be anyway you like it as long as it is beautiful to look at and tasty to eat. Its purpose is a symbolic sharing of love between the bride and groom, and all their guests.

unique location Public spaces offer a unique location for a wedding The Wairarapa has many stunning locations in public spaces for wedding ceremonies - and even receptions. None of the Wairarapa’s three councils nor the Department of Conservation are against having weddings in the parks, reserves and beaches they manage. But for the benefit of the wedding parties as well as protecting these areas, they all advise on making enquiries first. Helen McNaught, Amenities Manager for the South Wairarapa District Council, says it is open to the idea of people having weddings and other events in its venues and parks. “We like to see them being used, and for the parks we don’t usually make a charge. Depending on the size of the event and the time of year, we might take a bond to cover clean-up.” Couples can get an Events Form from the Amenities team which also acts as

a checklist of all the things they might need to think of when planning an event, particularly in an open space. Carterton and Masterton District Councils take a similar approach, as does the Department of Conservation. DOC Wairarapa Operations Manager Kathy Houkamau says the public generally has free access to conservation land but if the wedding was in a highly used public place they would like to know about it. “There is no reason I can think of that we would automatically say no. But we would take into account public safety and the enjoyment of others, and want to ensure the wildlife and vegetation in particular was looked after.” Kathy points out that DOC can also let wedding organisers know if other events are planned at the location on the day they have mind.

photography Capturing your wedding for posterity

Being the photographer must be one of the most challenging jobs at a wedding. You have to have a certain level of creativity but channel that to the client’s wishes, a huge amount of technical skills, and an equal amount of people skills. So you need to choose a photographer who specialises in weddings. As soon as you have your date set, look for your photographer. Decide what style of wedding photography you prefer. Every photographer has their own unique style but these can be categorised into a number of basic categories - traditional (formal), photojournalism (documentary style), illustrative (a mix of traditional and informal poses), and fashion (glamour and style). You will spend a lot of time on the day with your photographer so choosing someone you feel comfortable with is very important. When meeting with a prospective photographer ask about their wedding experience, discuss the venue

and any challenges with it such as lighting. Ask to look at examples of their work. Agree on a contract that stipulates what your chosen package includes such as a disc or USB of photos and what prints you will get. Include a back-up plan if the photographer is sick. Every photographer has a different way of editing their images using computer software. Most photographers do some basic lighting and colour adjustments, but you can also use editing software to create a unique look.

WHAT TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER  Is there a travel fee?  What is the overtime rate?  How much time will the photographer spend on the wedding day? - Will they be there to cover the whole event? - Will they be with the Bride as she gets ready? - How long will they be at the reception for?

 Is there a back up venue if it rains?  What does the photograpy package include? - Do you receive digital versions of all the wedding photos? Or do you have to purchase them individually, and what is the cost? - What printed photos are inclued in the package? - Does the package include an album or framed photos? - How can my guests order photos? - Where can I find you in 5 years time if I need more copies?

invite

Time to tell everyone the good news You’ve set a date for your wedding. Now’s the time to put everyone in the loop with a wedding save-the-date card.

which should be included in the invitation, but beyond those they can express your personal sense of etiquette and creativity.

This pre-invitation will give guests a heads up so that they can lock the date in and make travel and accommodation arrangements, increasing your chances that they will attend the celebration, usually sent out around six months before the wedding.

The Internet is full of examples of invitation cards to be inspired by, with wedding invitation design one of the most creative areas of print design today.

The save-the-date card should include the couple’s names, wedding date or dates for a wedding weekend, location (even if a venue hasn’t been booked yet) and a notice for a formal invitation to follow. Save-the-dates cards are less formal than invitations and don’t need an RSVP. Sending out the actual wedding invitations is a special moment in the journey towards the wedding ceremony and deserves some special attention. There are certain customary elements

One of the most popular trends is letterpress printing, a relief printing technique that creates an imprint effect on text and images. The result is a high quality, classic feel. Another perennial that never goes out of fashion is a vintage look. Or for something different, a 3D pop-up invitation or fairytale style imagery. But invitations are also a chance to be creative with a touch of DIY not out of order - something that adds an element of surprise and anticipation.

invitation Include whether the invite is for the wedding ceremony and reception, reception only or evening reception only.

Name and location of the ceremony and reception venue

Date & Time RSVP With a return card and/ or email and phone number. Deadline - usually around four weeks before the wedding.

Of course, the main purpose of the invitation is to provide essential information to your guests.

ceremony legalities Legal requirements in New Zealand

DID YOU KNOW THAT...?  Any Will that you have made prior to marrying will be revoked by the marriage. For this reason it is important to make a new Will before you get married. (However, if you have made a Will “in contemplation of marriage” this will be recognised).  If you are getting married for a second time, there are ways you can protect a portion of your assets for your children.  If you have an accident or for any other reason become unable to make decisions for yourself, that no one – including your spouse – is automatically legally entitled to make decisions for your personal care or property. This is why you need an Enduring Power of Attorney whether young or old. If you don’t, this will make a difficult situation even more stressful.  Couples getting married are often thinking about buying a home. There are a number of different ways you can own property as a couple, each with their own legal ramifications which are important to know.  If you are in a relationship and don’t want your property split 50/50 if you separate after three years, you and your partner can sign a Contracting Out Agreement (often known as a “prenuptial”) that determines who gets what.

 If you are in a same sex relationship and want children you may need to think about adoption/surrogacy.

WEDDING LEGALITIES -BEFORE & AFTER THE CEREMONY There are strict legal requirements regarding marriage and civil unions. The Department of Internal Affairs website www.dia.govt.nz has everything you need to know. You can also find a list of all the marriage celebrants in New Zealand on the website. As well as a Marriage Licence fee, you must complete a notice of intention to marry including the full names and ages of the couple, their parents’ particulars, where the marriage will take place and the name of the Minister or Celebrant. The Department of Internal Affairs website includes some interesting facts about the legal requirements surrounding marriage.  For instance, Registry Office ceremonies are not open to the public.  There is no legal requirement that a ceremony before a marriage celebrant be open to the public.

 There is no limitation on what day, or where you can be married, as long as the ceremony is conducted by a registered marriage celebrant or a Minister of a church.  Couples may change the form of their relationship between civil unions and marriages.

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS IN NEW ZEALAND  The Minister or Marriage Celebrant must be licensed to conduct marriages.  The marriage must take place between 6am and 10pm.  The marriage must be witnessed by two people and the full names of the couple are used during the ceremony.  Divorce from a previous marriage must be absolute.  The couple must be over 18 or have parental consent if aged 16 or 17.  A Marriage Licence must be obtained from the Department of Internal Affairs Births Deaths and Marriages Office.

 Your marriage licence is valid for just three months from the date on which it is issued.

mr&mrs A unique orchard wedding

In many ways the April Wedding of Greytown couple Melissa and Jade Garrity reflects the trend for personalised weddings in the Wairarapa. Partly this is a desire for couples like Melissa and Jade to create a wedding experience that expresses who they are. But it also often involves designing a wedding around personal circumstances that can vary dramatically from one couple to another. Melissa and Jade met two years ago when Melissa came down from New Plymouth for a family 21ST. “We skipped being engaged,” she recalls. “We sat down at the beginning of the year to decide where we wanted to be in a year’s time. Part of that was to be married. The time between then and our wedding was just 11 weeks. “We had our wedding on a Friday. My mum suggested having it the same weekend as my dad’s 50th and brother-in-law’s 30th combined birthday party. That way

everyone could be there for it and not have to come back a second time. “The ceremony was held at 11.30am in the morning, then we had lunch and a dance and it was finished at around 5pm. We didn’t want to have a big party where everyone gets really drunk. We wanted it to be special and something everyone remembered. There were a lot of tears. And everyone was fresh for the birthday celebrations the next day.” Melissa and Jade held both the ceremony and reception at the orchard where they were living at the time. “It was stunning, absolutely gorgeous. We love being outside and in nature and it was the perfect setting. The trees were the main feature. We had the ceremony under a large chestnut tree and hung white rice paper balls on the trees in the orchard which was just changing colour as it was coming into autumn.”

The Perfect place for a small Wedding Ceremony

Get married under the sweeping oak tree, have your photos taken amongst the gorgeous old fashioned flower gardens or beside the 100 year old barn, or beside the lake. Melissa wore an ivory wedding dress she bought from Brides On Thorndon in Wellington. “I went over just to try on dresses and have an idea of what type of dress would suit my body shape. I tried on five or six dresses and that one just fit like a glove - it was made for me.” Melissa wore the same veil her mother wore at her wedding and the engagement ring the couple had specially made after deciding to marry. The gold for the engagement ring came from the wedding rings of Jade’s godfather and grandfather “so it is really special”, embedded with sapphires and diamonds chosen by Jade. “It was specially made by James of The Jewel Centre in Carterton. I wanted a design that was really practical to wear when doing work. It is a flat design and really strong and sturdy. James really understood what we had in mind and only uses stones from ethical sources.” Melissa carried a bouquet of apricot and green while her four bridesmaids wore white roses in their hair. Melissa’s five year old son Tommy, dressed in the same outfit as Jade, was the ring bearer. The service was conducted by Greytown celebrant Helen Thomas. “She made us laugh the first time she came and met us, and she was happy to do the ceremony the way we wanted, not a standard one.” For their vows, the couple used the “Ceremony of Roses” from the book “Conversations With God”, recommended

by a friend, which they slightly amended and shortened. Friend and DJ Shannon Edwards played Ed Sheerin’s “Talking Out Loud” as they arrived at the ceremony, “because of the words and how he sings it - being in love and loving someone for your whole life.” And Rudimentals’ “Lay It All On Me” as they signed the registry. “It’s really upbeat and happy.” The reception was held in a marquee and once again Melissa and Jade’s creativity came to the fore, with the couple making tables, each seating 12 guests, out of pallets, while the seating was hay bales covered in white sheets which the staff at Vinnies Op Shop in Carterton had collected for the couple over time. The end result was original and stylish. One of the features of the wedding was the contributions made by so many family and friends who wanted to help. Shannon provided the music for the day, Melissa’s aunt, artist Tina Rae Carter made painted signs with messages like “and they lived happily ever after” which were hang around the orchard. Melissa’s brother Jonas Mead, a patisserie chef, made the wedding cake, a three tier carrot cake with bunting, while Jade’s parents who own Greytown truck firm Garrity Bros, supplied two vintage trucks as “props” for the photos. The couple have yet to go on a honeymoon, being in the process of buying their own home, but when they do get away, it will be to Japan, says Melissa.

The contest is open to brides married between 1 August 2015 and 31 July 2016 who were married in the Wairarapa, have lived in the Wairarapa or whose husband has lived in the Wairarapa.

Bride of the Year chance to feel special again It was Ana Whiteacre-Burt’s mother-in-law Jenny who suggested she enter last year’s Bride of the Year competition. “She saw it in the paper and said I should enter. It looked like a lot of fun and with lots of prizes. I’m not normally the type to get up on my own but I absolutely loved my wedding dress so any reason to wear it again. Ana bought her wedding dress, which she describes as “an evening gown with a glamorous look in Sydney where she and husband Andrew Burt were living at the time. The couple returned to New Zealand to marry and live early last year, getting married at The Pines on Wellington’s south coast in March. The competition revolved mainly around the catwalk with the judges taking into consideration contestants’ walk,

and personality and overall presentation, Ana says. As for her wedding day, Ana did her own make up with the same natural look and used the same hairdresser and hair style. She was surprised to win Bride of the Year. “Extremely. I was looking at the girl I thought was going to win when my name was called out.â€? Along with winning a king sized bed and gift vouchers, Ana enjoyed the experience of the Bride of the Year. “I got out doing something different. I’m quite a nervous person so it was a good FRQĂ€GHQFH ERRVW , KDG VXFK D JRRG WLPH meeting the other contestants, wearing my wedding dress again and feeling special like on my wedding day.â€?

setting the theme Flowers, decorations, favours

Your flowers, decorations and favours are a great way of expressing your wedding theme to your guests. Couples today want a wedding that showcases who they are and look for ways to bring in elements that hold special meaning for them. A useful tool to get started with your own unique theme is a mood board on which you pin images you like. This will help you clarify in your mind the general direction you want to head. Colour plays an important part in setting the tone, creating an immediate mood and impression. Identify the key colours you want, and then select neutral colours to accompany and complement them. Flowers are a key part of the wedding style and theme. It is important to pick a florist whose style appeals to you and who you can relate to. Bring the florist some fabric swatches, this will give them an idea of the colour palette you are looking for.

personalised sweets.

Talk about the mood you want to create but allow the florist to be creative as well. Details like the location and type of venue will also help them.

Or you can be even more original and perhaps place a beautiful small crystal for each guest and/or a beautiful large one as a table centrepiece.

Some of the interesting flower trends coming through at the moment are loose and organic looking bridal bouquet shapes that look like they have just been picked from the garden, the inclusion of heirloom flowers like carnations and chrysanthemums, and wearable floral accessories.

There are plenty of attractive commercial wedding decorations available such as lanterns, paper and lace parasols, personalised paper napkins and ribbons, and decorative vases.

Wedding favours are a great way to personalise your wedding with, for instance, homemade treats or

Or have some featured objects to reflect your passions in life - from music to vintage cars.

But it is also easy to go to other sources. For instance, beautiful shells or wild flower arrangements.

designer inspired The wedding dress

The world’s leading fashion designers appear to be inspired when it comes to wedding dresses at present. While retaining all the essential elements of traditional bridal gowns, they are transforming these into stunning new dresses in keeping with broader contemporary fashion trends. Many of the designs incorporate a tasteful sensuality that accentuates the beautiful lines of the female body, for example, the ultra-low backlines. plunging necklines, strapless wedding dresses and the off-theshoulder silhouette. There’s more than a hint of the golden age of Hollywood in the spectacular trains and veils on runways this northern hemisphere spring, full of drama and glamour. And capes have made a striking appearance in 2016. Three dimensional wedding dresses, where the bottom layer of the dress is overlaid by opaque material is creating some striking sculptural effects. Feathers are also adding an extra dimension, whether as skirting or an accent, and lace is being employed to all sorts of beautiful effects. Pink in various shades is the nonwhite colour of choice but a wash of watercolours offers a sublime beauty that is worth investigating. An interesting trend has seen modular elements added to wedding dresses. These can be detached when brides want to let their hair down at the reception such as a large bow, train or bustle. And like the “little black dress”, the little

white dress continues to be a timeless favourite. Interestingly, some designers have replaced dresses with pants with two piece suits and jumpsuits making an appearance on runways.

Whatever the look, the leading designers haven’t forgotten that the wedding dress is one of the most important elements of every wedding ceremony and whatever the design it must express romance and beauty.

How to write your own wedding vows

There is a lot more to think about if you are planning to write your own wedding vows than might first appear. The first thing to do is to see if this is okay with your officiant. Some faiths may require you to say all or part of the traditional vows. This may mean including both traditional and personalised text. You also have to make sure your fiance is as committed to the idea as you are. Then you have to think whether you will write them separately or together. Will they be the same promises to each other as with traditional vows. And will you share them with each other before the wedding day. The next step is research to find what strikes a chord with you. Find inspiration

from a source that inspired you - spiritual texts, poetry or your favourite film - but you may want to just use these as a starting point for more personalised vows. You might want to consider what the other person means to you and what you most want to promise them as vows are a form of promise. It is okay to include promises that are both broad in scope and highly individualised. Wedding vows aren’t exactly a performance but you are sharing them with your guests so it is good to have text that everyone can understand and empathise with.

writing your vows the day before the wedding. There is nothing wrong in practicing your vows beforehand. Saying them out loud can also be very useful for editing purposes. Sometimes what sounds good on paper doesn’t work so well when spoken. A friend or family member can be used for feedback. Once you have determined your exact wording make an attractive copy to read at the ceremony. Everything else will look beautiful so no point holding a shabby piece of paper with lots of crossing out on it. Plus it will be seen in the wedding photos.

gifts

Imagination all that’s needed to choose a great wedding gift Long gone are the days when wedding gifts revolved around helping the newlyweds to set up home. Now almost anything given with thought and love is appropriate. That doesn’t make it any easier to choose the right gift, but there are tools to help. A bridal or wedding registry is not a new FRQFHSW KDYLQJ EHHQ ÀUVW XVHG E\ &KLFDJR department store Marshall Field back in 1924. Most brides register for gifts ahead of time. By referring to a registry, the gift giver knows they have given the couple something they want, and even more importantly, something they don’t already own. It also helps prevent the receipt of duplicate or unwanted gifts. While traditional in other cultures, money to many New Zealanders seems impersonal or uncreative. In fact, for many younger couples it will likely help in their plans – helping with the honeymoon,

saving to buy a house, paying off student loans. You can include a more personal inexpensive gift as well. A trend these days is for couples to ask guests to consider donating to a cause they support. honeymoon

Romance the only requisite when it comes to honeymoons There’s only one rule for honeymoons in 2016 - anything goes - in length of time, destination, number of honeymoons, and even the number of people going on the honeymoon! A lot of this has to do with people’s personal circumstances. For instance, more couples are leaving their honeymoon till a few days after their wedding in order to spend more time with guests, especially ones they rarely see or who have travelled a great distance. More couples are taking a shorter and usually less expensive honeymoon right after their wedding and a larger trip a few months later. If you are short of time straight after your wedding, or have limited funds, an alternative to the longer honeymoon is a short one where you enjoy a memorable few nights in luxury accommodation and splash out in other ways.

Alternatively, an extended honeymoon can be your big break before settling down for a few years. While the norm for New Zealand couples continues to be an overseas honeymoon, another option is a romantic New Zealand road trip. Often couples’ honeymoon finances are being given a boost with a honeymoon registry which guests are invited to contribute to in lieu of a wedding gift. Usually the amount given is not noted with the couple simply receiving a list of names of those who contributed. The total amount donated varies greatly but can sometimes add up to a few thousand dollars. If you are taking your honeymoon overseas, a good first port of call is www. safetravel.govt.nz, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade site that provides information for having a safe honeymoon.

We will work with you to create the perfect menu for your wedding. We cater for any size or style of event including plated meals, buffets, barbeques, picnics and canapes. Cnr High Street & Belvedere Road Carterton | Phone 379 7712 26

fashion & marriage The start of a beautiful relationship

The institution of marriage is still an ideal that many couples aspire to and believe in, but they are also hip to what is current in the world of fashion and the two are enjoying their own union of sorts.

Two piece bridesmaid dresses are arguably best suited for younger wedding parties but where worn certainly give off a strong sense of cool, ranging from romantic to sensual.

Look at the grooms. Suspenders are adding a funky and modern twist, along with bow ties, both of which are sympathetic to the current popularity for beards.

For the hair, braids are making a big VWDWHPHQW ZKLOH IUHH Ă RZLQJ ORFNV EHDFK waves, and undone updos are also making an appearance.

Beautifully cut suits are also trending, from the semi-formal no-tie look to a full three piece with tie. Either way looks great.

Supermodel Cara Delevingne appears to have kicked of a trend for bold brows, and matte brown eye shadow and liner are trending. Treatments that bring out the natural colour of the lips and glow of the VNLQ DUH ÀQGLQJ IDYRXU DV ZHOO

Formality can be softened by accessories or a splash of colour, or even mismatched suits. For bridesmaids, tea length dresses where the hemline falls just below the knee are having their moment in the sun, as is the shoulder bridesmaid dress which show off the silhouette at the same time as giving support, while cap sleeves are offering an attractive alternative to the strapless look.

IT WILL NOT BE YOUR USUAL WEDDING.

BECAUSE THIS IS NOT YOUR USUAL GARDEN. Not all garden weddings are created equal. River Terrace most certainly was not. After a stream of requests, nationally renowned garden designer Lyn Eglinton has surrended to demand and now welcomes couples and their guests to share her private garden and home, on their special day. Less than three kilometres from Masterton, River Terrace is an immaculate setting of immaculate avenues and

stunning spaces perfectly presented for your wedding. Both the garden and surrounding pasturelands provide an exceptional canvas for your celebrations and photos and your guests are of course free to wander and enjoy this exceptional property. Take some time, bring your imagination, and explore the many magic possibilities of a wedding at River Terrace by contacting our property manager.
