Getting started Congratulations on becoming engaged! Now that just leaves the small matter of planning for your wedding. Where do you begin?

Announce your engagement. Most likely you will tell your closest family and friends first. Inevitably social media will play a part, but why not go old school and tell people in person or by phone, or put an announcement in the Wairarapa Times-Age where the good news is sure to be noted. Choosing a wedding date. One of the most important decisions you will make. Things that come into play include the weather, when guests can make it, venue availability, school holidays and work schedules. Style. This affects so many other important decisions including the venue, decorations, flowers, cake, food and music. Now is the time to decide if you will be having a formal, casual or theme wedding. Also, religious or secular ceremony. Wedding Party. Inevitably, early on you will be thinking about who you want to be your bridesmaids, groomsmen and best man. Now is the time to get them involved. Location. Wairarapa has so many memorable locations for a wedding. Start doing your research early. The

more time you give yourself, the more chance you will get the venue you want on the day and time you want it. Number of guests. You will probably instinctively have a sense of this, but make it more concrete by writing a list of everyone you definitely want to be there. The more guests you have, the bigger your budget will need to be. Budget. Start with a figure that you think is close to what you can afford including contributions from parents and others. Then draw up a list of all estimated costs, altering these to stay within the grand total. Track your spending so it doesn’t get out of control. Some couples choose to open a separate wedding bank account. Use technology to organise. Create a ‘wedding folder’ on your computer or free Dropbox account which you can access everything wedding-related on any device. There are a host of other online tools such as Google Apps for storing and sharing documents, Evernote for collecting links or even Pinterest for collating inspirational images. Set up a dedicated wedding folder in your email account too.

The Lolly Jar can provide the perfect sweet treat for your special occasion. Choose from an extensive variety of lollies from all over the world. Fantastic for favors and brilliant for buffets. We also have a range of gorgeous candy buffet jars available for hire or purchase.

Great deals. Wairarapa venues and caterers offer very competitive rates that would be impossible to find in a large city. Choose a winter wedding. A wintery wedding in Wairarapa can be as romantic as a summer one. Especially if you choose the right location. Have an all-inclusive wedding. An all-inclusive wedding package can be more affordable than hiring all the different elements required, plus they are less stressful. Wairarapa has a number of venues that offer the whole package, including picturesque spots for the ceremony, reception rooms, accommodation and even a wedding planner. They may also offer discounts on various aspects of the wedding.

Hire trustworthy suppliers. Businesses with good reputations have earned them over years in Wairarapa. Ask family and friends who they recommend for suppliers. You may not save money but you will also avoid over charging or poor products and services. Beauty on a budget. Wairarapa has an extraordinary number of hair stylists and beauty therapists, often in the same salon. Many of them have a passion for weddings. They will be able to offer you an affordable complete package that can include all the essentials as well as any pre-wedding treatments from manicures to tans.

Whether your wedding is going to be an intimate or grand affair, formal or casual, there will be a venue to match your style and budget. Whatever you choose, there are details you will need to know before you book your location. Date and availability. It is always best to book as far ahead of time as possible so as not to be disappointed. Discounts may be available for off-season and week days. What is the cancellation policy and what is the deposit policy? Some venues may refund most of the deposit if enough notice is given. Is expertise part of the service? Some venues may have an expert to assist with setting up the wedding as a complementary part of their service. How many people can it accommodate? Obviously a crucial question but unless you are having a very large wedding reception, must venues in Wairarapa will be able accommodate your guest list. Does it have the facilities to host both the ceremony and reception? This is common to a number of venues in Wairarapa such as some of the major hotels. Is there accommodation on-site or easy to reach? Some locations offer venues as well as accommodation. If not, the venue is likely to be close to accommodation if you are holding in one of the region’s towns. If you are wanting a farm or beach wedding this may not be the case. Does it have its own caterers and are their food options what you are looking for? Some venues such as hotels and clubs can provide their own catering while others will require making your own arrangements. If you want to use your own caterers then you may need to find out if this is okay in the first situation. Are tables, linen, chairs, plates, silverware and glassware provided, or will you have to rent them yourself? The first option is attractive both for the fact that it saves hiring these yourself and less hassle.

Are kitchen facilities available? Vital if you are using your own caterers. What bar services does it offer? Does it allow BYO? Is there a corkage fee? A venue with its own bar service is convenient, but some couples may be asking their guests to BYO to make their wedding more affordable. Does the venue have its own sound system and dance floor. Does it offer entertainment options? In most cases you will likely have to organise your own entertainment but the venue team may be able to recommend entertainers to you.

From what time can the wedding be set up and deliveries made? Particularly important if you are organising most aspects of the wedding yourself. Is there parking on-site? The vast majority of Wairarapa venues will have on-site parking. How many restrooms are there? This should be straight forward but maybe you need to find out where they are so guests don’t get lost looking for them.

How long will the space be reserved for? In a busy hotel this will likely be limited to the exact time you have booked but for a country hall, for example, there is likely to be more leeway.

Making your marquee Marquees are a popular option for wedding receptions in Wairarapa, thanks in part to the many stunning locations.

Shelly Paget has been involved in event management for nine years and says over the five years she was a wedding planner 90 per cent of her clients asked for a marquee wedding. “A lot of the brides lived overseas but grew up in Wairarapa or had a special connection with the people or locations.” Now the new owner of Festival Hire Wairarapa with husband Greg Mason, she says there are important things to consider when holding a marquee wedding. “It is common for people to buy a cheap gazebo but a tiny bit of wind and whoosh they blow over. You don’t want to be taking any sort of risks on your special day.” It is much better to hire a quality marquee that is designed for large events, says Shelly. The siting of the marquee is important so that it is not exposed to strong winds although putting a great view first is always a temptation. Some novel ways of reducing the effect of the wind have been using sheep trucks as a buffer or stacks of hay and baleage. It is always good to have a Plan B in case the weather is particularly bad, says Shelly, such as a nearby community hall. These are often available at short notice and inexpensive. There is plenty to consider in terms of the seating plan inside the marquee such as how many will be seated at the

8 WAIRARAPA WEDDINGS 2017

head table, and what table settings will be used. “You will need a bigger table if you are going to have buffet selection on them, for example.” A dance floor will be needed as otherwise guests will be dancing in the mud or dust. “The music can take up a lot of space, especially if it is a band.” Electricity is a very important issue to think about, says Shelly. Power is the biggest factor. Do not under estimate how much power you will need. You will need to hire the right sized generator. Farmers often use their own generator but it may not be big enough. There are a lot of things that use a lot of power such as the hot water urns. The people hiring out generators should be able to give the right advice and if a lead is being run from a house then an electrician should be used to make sure everything is in order. Portaloos are essential, of course, with the rule of thumb being that there should be one portaloo for every 45 guests. However, if you are planning a shindig the next day then more will be needed, especially in the heat of a Wairarapa summer. Shelly encourages couples to pick the brains of the professionals they use from the caterers to the hire firms. “Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions.” Her final piece of advice is to hire 10 extra of everything than the number of guests.

Catering to your guests The wedding breakfast is the heart of every wedding, a time of sharing, community and joy expressed through generosity. It’s also the part of the part of the wedding that makes one of the biggest impressions on guests. Today there are more catering options than ever, each appropriate depending on the style of wedding. A La Carte. The most traditional, and still arguably the most popular option, this has a formal flavour but can easily be personalised to capture the spirit of the wedding with table decorations and the choice of food. It is usually the most expensive option and only provides a limited choice of dishes. There tends to be less interaction as guests remain in their seats. Buffet. With a wide selection of hot and cold food, the buffet is likely to please everyone. While traditional buffets where all the food is located on a separate table are still common, a popular trend is to have the meats served on plates with a selection of non-meat dishes at each table.

10 WAIRARAPA WEDDINGS 2017

Canapes and finger foods. These are traditionally served between the ceremony and breakfast but a recent trend has seen cocktail-style receptions replace the traditional breakfast. They create a more casual atmosphere and more mingling but may catch guests by surprise. Standing may be exhausting for some guests. Watch out for a higher alcohol bill. Food Stations. “Grazing tables offer plenty of room for creativity as each station can have its own food theme. Few queues and more interaction

are a plus but this may be an expensive option if more catering staff are needed. Go casual. Plenty of options here from pizza ovens to spit roasts and barbecues to food trucks and caravans. These are ideal for smaller or informal weddings. All three can be hired in the Wairarapa and are ideal for summer weddings.

Let us help you celebrate your wedding day, with a personal and professional experience.

The naked facts about wedding cakes When Bakery Manager Jenna Mangin first started at 10 O’Clock Cookie seven years ago, one of the first wedding cakes she made was a three-tier “full on” fruit cake with rolled white icing - in other words your classic traditional wedding cake. “Now you never see that!” Today, if you asked Jenna what a typical wedding cake looks like, it would most likely be a three-tier chocolate mud cake with little or no icing.

The traditional white rolled icing is going out of favour, Jenna says. “People prefer frosted icing using butter and icing because it is less rich and more appealing to their taste buds.” Some cakes do away with icing altogether - hence their being “naked”. The typical cake still has three tiers, although this can vary depending on the number of guests at the wedding.

“Most wedding cakes are plain and simple. We do a lot of naked cakes with no icing or a little bit of frosted icing that is transparent.”

Where some sort of icing is used, it is mostly white with colour being added through embellishments such as flowers or ribbons.

Rustic touches are popular, such as using a palette knife to create a textured look with frosted icing and adding fresh flowers.

Nearly all wedding cakes are now chocolate mud cakes, with carrot and banana the next most popular choices, and occasionally lemon.

Oozing cakes are also popular with chocolate or caramel dripping down the sides.

Take the guesswork out of guest lists You’ve announced your engagement, found your ideal venue and set the date. Now it’s time to send out the invitations - a challenge if your wish list is larger than your budget and venue. Traditionally, the couple choose half the guest list, while each set of parents gets a quarter of the guest list. Whatever the arrangement, a good first step is to draw up a list of those they would like to have at the wedding and divide them into an “A” list and “B” list.

Repeat the process for the B list etc until you have reached your final guest list. With this finalised, it is time to put everyone in the loop with a wedding save-the-date card. This pre-invitation, usually sent out around six months before the wedding, will give guests a heads-up so they can lock the date in and make travel and accommodation arrangements. The save-the-date card should include the couple’s names, wedding date or dates for a wedding weekend, location (even if a venue hasn’t been booked yet) and a notice for a formal invitation to follow. Save-the-dates cards are less formal than invitations and don’t need an RSVP. Sending out the actual wedding invitations is a special moment and deserves special attention.

There are certain customary elements which should be included, but beyond those they can express your personal sense of etiquette and creativity. Of course, the main purpose of the invitation is to provide essential information to your guests.  Include whether the invite is for the wedding ceremony and reception, reception only or evening reception only.  Name and location of the ceremony and reception venue  Date and time  RSVP with a return card and/or email and phone number.  RSVP deadline - usually around four weeks before the wedding.

Personalising your ceremony Whether you are having a religious or non-religious ceremony, you can add your own personal touches to it. Many couples now write their own vows. The first thing to do is to see if this okay with your officiant. Some faiths may require you to say all or part of the traditional vows. This may mean including both traditional and personalised text. Will they be the same promises to each other as with traditional vows? And will you share them with each other before the wedding day? Make a deadline so that you are not writing your vows the day before the wedding. There is nothing wrong in practising your vows beforehand. After you have determined your exact wording make an attractive copy to read at the ceremony. Will you have readings during the ceremony? If it is a religious ceremony,

you can still choose an text from the Bible or other scriptures that has personal meaning for you. If it is nonreligious then any inspirational text will be appropriate. Visual elements can play an important part in personalising your ceremony if it is held outside, for instance making an aisle out of sprinkled flower petals, hanging decorations on trees, or creating a backdrop of ribbons. The wedding ceremony has its own unique musical requirements which can require music for the prelude, bridal procession, signing of documents and recession. This can be recorded music that reflects your personality, but if you have friends or family who sing or play a musical instrument why not ask them to be part of the ceremony?

Choosing your celebrant There’s no marriage without a celebrant - making them the most essential person at your wedding ceremony. Almost as importantly, your celebrant will help set the tone for the ceremony. All are sincere and committed to doing their best, but inevitably some will be a better match than others. Choosing a celebrant should be one of the first things you do as their name needs to be on the marriage licence application to the Department of Births, Deaths and Marriages. But also because good popular celebrants are often booked out many months in advance.

Celebrants can charge anywhere from $150 up to $800 or more, according to the Citizens Advice Bureau, depending on where you live, the amount of experience the celebrant has, the length of the ceremony and services you ask for. If you are price-conscious, the celebrant may be happy to omit some of these for a lower fee. For religious ceremonies the local representative of that faith will conduct the ceremony in most cases. Secular weddings allow more choices with a number of websites listing registered celebrants, among them the Department of Internal Affairs www.celebrants.dia.govt.nz - and Celebrants Association www.celebrantsassociation.co.nz

family to recommend someone. If you’re getting married at a registry office you will be married by a Registrar of Marriages so you don’t need to find your own celebrant. The Registrar will preside over the ceremony but there is only room for a small number of guests and while an inexpensive option, it still currently costs $173.70 including the ceremony and licence.

As well, many marriage celebrants advertise online, either on their own websites or wedding focused websites. You can try asking your friends and

Capturing the day present for posterity The photographer will have one of the most important and high pressure jobs at your wedding.

So you need to choose a photographer who specialises in weddings. As soon as you have your date set start researching the best photographer for you. Decide what style of wedding photography you prefer. Every photographer has their own unique style - traditional/formal, documentary-style, fashion/glamour or a combination of any of these. Capturing weddings is challenging and creative. The photographer is telling the story of your day, but also of your personality. Variety is good. But you can’t beat a timeless photo of the bride and groom walking hand-in-hand down a windswept beach or in a golden field. There are many landscapes in Wairarapa to feature in the photos. While some are well-known and timeless such as Castlepoint, some photographers will also have little known picturesque spots up their sleeves. You will spend a lot of time on the day with your photographer so choose someone you feel comfortable with. There are a lot of ingredients that make a great wedding photo, starting with a thorough consultation, finding out all

the details of the couple’s wedding day to know in advance when great photo opportunities are going to happen. Some alone time for the couple is a great time to capture more intimate and relaxed shots. When meeting a prospective photographer ask about their wedding experience, discuss the venue and any challenges with it, such as lighting. Ask to look at examples of their work. Agree on a contract that stipulates what your chosen package includes such as a usb of photos and what prints you will get. Include a back-up plan if the photographer is sick. Your photographs will become a memory of your day but ironically today’s photographic technology is more vulnerable to being lost than black and white photography of nearly 100 years ago. The best solution is to get the images printed on to photographic paper as quickly as possible, especially the most important ones. Here, professional photographic labs are the best option because of the quality of the chemicals they use.

Flower thoughts Flowers will be a key part of your wedding style. Even if you aren’t keen on flowers, having some softens the look and feel of a ceremony and reception. On the other hand, you don’t need flowers everywhere (which is good news for your budget). Flowers can be allocated where they will actually be noticed and make a difference. It is important to pick a florist whose work you admire, and who can relate to you and the look you want to achieve. Even if you have an idea of what you want in mind, be open minded to suggestions from the florist.

Don’t try to replicate an image you have seen online or in magazines as this is almost impossible, although these can be good starting point for giving your florist an idea of the sort of look you are after. If you have an idea for a type of flower you want, make sure they will be inseason and available for your wedding. You might also want to know their price compared to other options for your budget’s sake. Flowers should be chosen with the venue in mind overall style and colour in mind. Maybe take a photo of it to show your florist. Most bridal parties will have a colour theme and flowers will traditionally fit in with the colours of the bridesmaids’ dresses. Bringing the florist an invitation sample and some fabric swatches. This gives them an idea of your preferred colour palette and any potential themes.

Get me to the wedding on time There is no shortage of transport options for a wedding in Wairarapa.

For guests arriving from overseas Wellington airport is a handy distance away, while the region is easy to access from both the north and south by road or rail. Bus and rail companies both provide regular services from Wellington. If you are taking the car, the roads are easy to get around with reasonable traffic flows on weekends and outside peak hours. If you are organising transport for guests, coaches and taxis are available to get everyone from the accommodation to the ceremony, reception and back to accommodation safely and hassle-free. Coaches are available if you want to take guests en mass from the ceremony to reception. Transport options for the bridal party are many and varied from limousines to vintage cars, to horse and carriage, or even helicopter! Choose one that fits your character or captures your imagination.

in another, with the bride and father following behind in their own vehicle. After the ceremony, the bride and groom naturally travel to the reception together with the rest of the bridal party following in one or more other vehicles. If you are on a tight budget you can use your own car and those of friends and family. Just make sure they are immaculately clean. If your transport is to be included in the wedding photos then it needs to fit in with the overall style of the wedding party. Book at least six months ahead if possible, especially if you will be getting married over spring or summer. While you will be expected to pay a deposit, arrange for someone to pay the balance on the day. View the vehicle before the day to make sure it is satisfactory and make sure the driver has all the times and directions needed.

Traditionally, the groom and groomsmen will travel to the ceremony together, while the bridesmaids, mother of the bride, flower girls and page boys will travel

WEDDING PLANNING CHECKLIST

When you first get engaged the number of things that have to be done before the big day can seem overwhelming. Our wedding-planning timeline can give you great peace of mind. We’ve started our wedding checklist at 12 months, but if you’re having a shorter engagement you still have plenty of time to get everything done - just reduce and delegate.

Looking a million dollars on your day

24 WAIRARAPA WEDDINGS 2017

While the bride is the star of the wedding, the best supporting actress is her wedding dress.

wedding dress - modern, chic, vintage, traditional or sexy. It should harmonise with the overall style of your wedding.

for informal wedding styles, and women who are remarrying or just want to exert their own personal style.

This said, remain open-minded as the dress you envisage in your mind may not actually look great on you in real life, whereas one you had never considered might surprise you.

Hiring a wedding dress is another affordable option, especially for those who aren’t planning to keep their dress as an heirloom.

Choosing a wedding gown that looks stunning on you is about time as much as it is about money.

You will be wearing your gown for several hours and in a variety of situations so you need to make sure it is comfortable to wear - sit down, walk around and even do a little shaking about in it for the wedding party.

If possible, start your search about nine months to a year before your wedding date, and come up with a realistic budget. Designer gowns in particular need to be ordered well in advance, and delivery dates and alterations need to be taken into account. Depending on your taste and budget, other options include buying a readymade gown, having one made for you, hiring one or buying a pre-loved dress. First familiarise yourself the various silhouettes. These fall into six broad categories - ball gown, empire, A-line, sheath, fit-and-flare, and mermaid. Try on one of each to find out which works best for your shape. Then you can decide on the details such as the neckline, sleeves and details. Shopping for a wedding gown is time and energy consuming so take a day off work, if possible, and make an appointment to visit shops early in the day when both you and the staff are fresh, and the shop is likely to be less busy. Keep your entourage to a small group as too many opinions will be confusing. You are likely to already have an idea of what look you want for your

Don’t be afraid to try on as many wedding dresses as you need to. Every dress has a unique shape and look depending on who is wearing it. If you are having a dress made for you, you will need to make sure the dressmaker is clear what your vision is. There is an exciting range of materials available from lace and silk, to brocade and satin. Bring photos and fabric swatches and discuss these with the dressmaker. Ask to see examples of their work before you select them. Affordably-priced, pre-loved wedding dresses can be found in second-hand shops, For Sale columns, Trade Me and other sources. These can be altered and embellished to create something special. Some brides have their mother’s wedding dresses altered and wear this on their wedding day. Your wedding does not even have to be traditional. Maxi dresses, ball gowns and cocktail outfits all offer a stylish and memorable look on a wedding day. These are a particularly popular option

Your shoes should not be an after thought. The wedding dress and what you wear on your feet go hand-in-hand, so choosing your shoes shouldn’t be an afterthought. Your shoes need to engage in a meaningful relationship with your dress, in terms of shape, proportion and style. If you want them to match, take a swatch of your wedding dress fabric with you when you go shopping for them. Consider getting your shoes dyed if they are not in the colour you want. If you are having your dress made, the dressmaker will need to know the exact height of your shoes. Whether you wear flats or heels comes down to several factors. Heels are more appropriate for formal weddings while flats suit a beach or country wedding. You might choose heels if you want to appear taller. One might be the sort of shoe you normally wear while the other isn’t. The most important thing to remember when buying wedding shoes is to stay true to your own style. If you are going to wear a pair of high stilettos, a pair of lower back-up shoes for dancing might be a good idea. Break the shoes in a few weeks before the wedding by wearing them around the house so they are comfortable to wear on the day.

Hospice Wairarapa will have a stall selling their Live Your Dream Wairarapa Wedding Raffle with a prize package worth over $24,000. This is their biggest fundraising event of the year. Brides and grooms find the boutique nature of the Expo is ideal as it’s not too big and overwhelming, allowing them to take their time to browse and discuss their wedding plans rather than rushing to get through the exhibits. In turn, the relaxed feel of the event is an advantage for exhibiting wedding specialists, who can discuss couples’ dreams and requirements for their wedding day in more depth prior to the busy wedding season beginning in the spring.

A fresh look at hair and make-up Preparation - from working out your styling to working out your schedule - is the secret to perfect hair and makeup on your wedding day. Facial skin treatments should start at least three months before the day - or a full year if you want a glowing fresh look. To ensure that you are confident that your hair and make-up will be great on the day, it is highly advisable to do a pre-wedding trial for both. Bring images that appeal to you and discuss these with your stylist. Make sure you have your trial at three weeks to five weeks before your wedding. If you plan to have a fake tan, have an initial one before your make-up trial so the artist is working with the skin tone you will have on the day. Watch out for any tendencies on your or your stylist’s part to go for something out of character. Your make-up and hair styling for your wedding day should make you feel comfortable, confident

and a fabulous version of yourself, rather than a completely different person. You should try at least two looks for your hair - even if you think you’re happy with the first one - for instance one up and one down. It’s important to bring any hair accessories you plan to wear on your big day to the trial - and the same goes for your signature lip colour. Manicures and pedicures, lash extensions, waxing and tannings are done a few days before the wedding. These can be an opportunity for a bridal pamper party. If you are booking both pre-wedding treatments and hair and make-up on the day you may be able to get a discount package. Both a hair stylist and make-up artist are likely to be working with the bride and bridesmaids on the day. The location can be a salon, location of the wedding, or home with drinks and nibbles to enliven the atmosphere.

Being well groomed

28 WAIRARAPA WEDDINGS 2017

Groom Checklist The first rule of thumb for the groom is to look the best you possibly can, however you dress. Unless you are wearing a traditional cultural costume or having a fantasy themed wedding, most likely you will be wearing a suit. It is advisable to have your suit fitted or made-to-measure by a professional. It is important that it fits well and all the elements are of the appropriate width and length. If you are hiring a suit, choose a jacket that fits neatly over the shoulders. Pants should fit comfortably when standing and sitting. Traditionally, the groomsmen’s attire is the same or similar to that of the groom. Even if the outfits aren’t exactly the same, they need to be matching in style and palette. A subtle way for the groom to stand out is by having a slightly lighter or darker shade than the groomsmen. The attire of the men should be in harmony with that of the women so the wedding party has a holistic style. For example, if the outfits of the bride and bridesmaids have a vintage look, three-piece suits may look best. The suits should match the formality of the wedding. An outdoor wedding offers the opportunity for a more casual approach and more colour options. Choose a tie that goes with the overall colour scheme and this should sit just above the waistband. Socks are more important than you might think as they will be seen in the photos and when sitting down. Choose a pair that blend with the suit. That said, accessories allow the opportunity to add a bit of pizzazz and personal style, such as a colourful tie, themed cuff links, bow tie or cummerbunds. Have your hair cut in the week preceding the wedding day and consider having a manicure as your hand will feature in photos of the rings.

After you pop the question, the countdown starts. While many of the arrangements for the wedding will be made together, there are some tasks that are the groom’s alone.

Make sure the rings are in safe hands. If you are going on your honeymoon straight after the reception, have your bags packed and have your tickets or passports in them if you are travelling overseas.

The wedding party, your very own entourage Your wedding party is your support group - especially your Best Man and Maid of Honour.

30 WAIRARAPA WEDDINGS 2017

Once you have asked people to be in your wedding party, you can’t go back so give yourself a month or so to consider who you will invite. Make sure they are able to commit as sometimes the role may be difficult for them to manage with other commitments etc, despite their willingness. Consider what sort of tasks you will assign to them. The type of wedding you are planning may influence this. For instance, you may be foregoing some of the elements of traditional wedding and so not need them to do these. Traditionally the average size of a wedding party is four on either side but this can vary depending on the size of the wedding and its formality. The more attendants you have, the more details you will have to organise for them and potentially the more costs you will have. The number of men and women doesn’t have to be even with some weddings having an uneven number. For instance, you may want the party to include the people who mean the most to you which may mean more men and less women or vice versa. Your Maid of Honour is likely to be a sister or your closest friend. Whoever it is, they need to be someone you can trust. Her roles can include planning the shower and bachelorette party, coordinating bridesmaid duties, being in charge of the gifts register, accompany the bride when looking for a gown and bridesmaid dresses, and give other help where needed. The Best Man is usually a brother or best mate. Because of the importance of their

role, they need to have the right qualities for the role. For instance, they must be comfortable being in the limelight. His roles can include organising the groomsmen’s fittings, keeping everything on schedule, planning the bachelor party, helping arrange accommodations for groomsmen coming from out of town, organising a groomsmen’s gift for the groom, getting the groom to the church on time, greeting guests with the groom, organising the ring to be at the ceremony, giving a speech at the reception and paying outstanding bills on the wedding day. The groomsmen can be family, friends, and both the bride and groom’s brothers. Their duties can include seating guests, helping the best man throw the bachelor party, and dancing with the bridesmaids. The bridesmaids can be family or friends and are expected to have ideas, give feedback, help decorate, assist with the hostess duties, help with guest accommodation and transport, and be a sounding board for the bride. The flower girl is there to be adorable. Her appearance signals the bride’s arrival, walking before her scattering flower petals as she walks down the aisle. She doesn’t have to be young either. Grandmothers and greatgrandmothers have been known to act as flower girls. She will also appear in photos. The ring bearer is usually a young boy whose job is to bear the ring, usually accompanying the flower girl down the aisle.

Spending time with your honey There are no rules for honeymoons - it’s simply a case of whatever inspires you. That said, there are often practical things to be taken into account such as the size of your budget, work commitments & children.

If you are short on time straight after your wedding, or have limited funds, an alternative is to have a short break straight after the wedding, maybe splashing out on luxury accommodation for the weekend, and then taking a longer honeymoon later on. One would hope both the bride and groom have enough in common to both want the same sort of honeymoon, but if not it will likely be the bride who has the final say. Undoubtedly you have a lot of shared interests and these can be included in your honeymoon from wine and food tastings to live music events. While the majority of New Zealand couples spend their honeymoon overseas, another option is a romantic New Zealand road trip. Often honeymoon finances are given a boost with a honeymoon registry where guests are

invited to contribute in lieu of a wedding gift. Usually the amount given is not noted with the couple simply receiving a list of names of those who contributed. Most travel agents now offer this service. Don’t be afraid to tell people you are on your honeymoon and you may enjoy free hotel upgrades, champagne on arrival to candlelit dinners and petalstrewn baths. If you are taking your honeymoon overseas, a good first port of call is www.safetravel.govt.nz, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade site that provides information for having a safe honeymoon. Another good website to check out is www.flysmart.govt.nz which informs international airline passengers about security measures in place and provides advice on how best to prepare for international air travel.

Getting your wedding right on time

No matter how big or small, every wedding needs a well-structured timeline for the special day. Getting the timing right means there is no time to stress and all the time to shine. On average most weddings run over an arc of approximately six hours, but add “buffer time” for unexpected delays, surprises and spontaneity. Be warned - you over-spend your time budget early in the day, you will be running to catch up for the rest of it.

Time to be beautiful. Make-up on a bride takes a good 45 minutes to an hour, says Ana of Serene Beauty Therapy. Hair takes around one hour. The bridesmaids’ make-up can be around half an hour, while their hair will take around 45 minutes. “The more bridesmaids, the longer the morning to get ready!” Time to say “I do”. It takes just a few minutes to carry out the legalities of a wedding, points out Masterton celebrant Bill Johnson, but he encourages couples to personalise their service by including special elements, such as readings or music from friends. “Generally, the service is around 20 minutes.” The Rev Andy Eldred, Vicar at St Mark’s Anglican Church in Carterton concurs that the elements the couple desire determine the length, such as a unity candle and communion. “On average I would say the services last about 30 minutes.”

Time to smile. While guests are enjoying canapes and cocktails, the bridal party will be off elsewhere having their formal pictures taken. The time needed should be determined in advance with the photographer, but allow extra time for spontaneous shots. Around one hour to 90 minutes. Time to dine. Your caterer will have given you an accurate estimate of the time for the Breakfast based on number of guests, type of catering etc. Safely allow two hours. Meals should be in front of guests within half an hour. Time to let your hair down. This should be easy to predict as you will already have told the DJ or band how long you want them to play for. That said, some weddings peter out early while others will be rocking late into the night. Minimum three hours.

A RUSTIC ROMANTIC LOOK WINS BRIDE OF THE YEAR

The winner of last year’s Bride of the Year was Sara Atkins (nee Hurley) from Masterton who married Patrick in February 2016 at The Landing in Masterton. The couple met when they were students at Chanel College and have been together ever since, Patrick popping the question when they travelled to Hawke’s Bay to pick up a puppy. “I got a puppy and a ring.”

crown “which I think was one of the best things about the outfit.”

Family and friends played a big part in many aspects of the wedding. A friend helped Sara style the wedding which had a “rustic romantic” theme with lots of whites and lace and “shabby chic” features such as hessian cloth table cloths.

“I go to the bridal show every year with my mum. It’s good fun and nice to see all the pretty dresses. My mum thought it would be a good idea to enter it.”

Another friend made Sara’s vintageinspired wedding dress using a design drawn by Sara which featured lots of lace and ¾ length sleeves. “I knew exactly what I wanted and couldn’t find it in shops so thought I might as well make it.” Sara’s mother-in-law made the flower

Sara’s hair was done by Olivia at Lorna Potter and make up by a family friend “who came over from Australia so I did the make-up myself this time - not as good as hers but had a good go at it.” It was Sara’s mother who suggested she enter Bride of the Year.

Sara was extremely surprised to win the competition. “I don’t think any of my family were looking at me. They were looking at the others that they thought would win, and I go “huh?” - so yeah, I was very surprised.” Sara recommends other brides to enter the competition. “It’s definitely a good night - a little nerve wracking, but it’s fun.”
