PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY Your locally owned newspaper

WOMEN IN BUSINESS 2017 LYN PATTERSON MAYOR OF MASTERTON

Celebrate our Local Businesswomen Time to

I am delighted to write an introduction to this publication celebrating some of the fantastic businesswomen in our region. From those running their own businesses to those in leadership roles with our major employers, there are so many stories of success worth recognising. There are numerous high profile examples of women who have become leaders in their chosen field, but there are many more who go unnoticed, working from home whilst juggling family life. We should also pay tribute to those women who work tirelessly bringing up their families, often in difficult circumstances, for whom paid employment simply isn’t an option. And let’s not forget the army of volunteers who contribute just as much as the rest of the workforce, but receive no monetary gain for doing so.

Congratulations to everyone recognised in this publication and let’s continue to work together towards a day when the quality of the individual becomes the most important factor in their success, not whether they are male or female. Lyn Patterson, Mayor of Masterton

True equality in the workplace is still a long way off and you only have to look at the salary gap between men and women in similar jobs to see that. I look forward to the day when opportunities and rewards are on an equal footing.

LYNETTE FINN

STRONG HANDS AND A READY SMILE Massage therapist Lynette Finn has strong hands and a ready smile; both qualities guaranteed to put her appreciative clients at ease. After graduating from the New Zealand College of Massage with a diploma in therapeutic massage, Lynette set up her practice in Masterton’s Villa Street eight years ago, building up a diverse client base while also tutoring for the College of Massage for four years. She enjoys working in a smaller community: “It allows you to work with a broader range of people, which I think makes you a better therapist. You get to use all of your skills on a regular basis, making you more able to adapt to meet each person’s needs.” Lynette has continued to add disciplines to her therapeutic practice and is also qualified in Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and Dry Needling. “It’s important to continue learning and developing your knowledge and skill base,” she says, “there is no ‘one size fits all’. People respond in different ways to different techniques and understanding that is key to achieving good results.”

MLD is a lightly applied massage technique most often used in the management of lymphedema, where lymph nodes have been removed or damaged during cancer treatment. “MLD is great for lymphedema management, though it also works really well for sinus congestion and is extremely relaxing.” “Dry Needling is an effective way of deactivating trigger points in muscles and reducing myofascial pain,” Lynette explains, “and it gives me another option for addressing an issue.” Lynette also offers a range of affordability options, giving clients choice in their therapy. She sees a growing desire in people to take a preventative approach to their health care. “We don’t have to accept stiffness and pain as we age, or poor sleep because we lead busy and stressful lives. There are better ways. “I like working with people,” she says, “not just on people. It’s a privilege to do what I do and it’s extremely rewarding.”

BRINGING GREAT DESIGN & QUALITY FURNISHINGS TO YOUR HOME In October this year Toni and Carl Schdroski will mark 27 years since they opened Country Life Furniture in Kuripuni. Over the past quarter-century the business has grown through various addresses, finally arriving back to Kuripuni again in November last year. This time though, Toni and Carl are in purpose-built premises which have been gaining a lot of attention. “We love our new look and being in the Kuripuni village”, says Toni. “We’ve had loads of wonderful comments on the outside deck and façade and also on the interior, especially the lighting.” The secret of Country Life’s success, says Toni, has been its commitment to quality and timeless design that never dates. As the years have passed the couple have extended Country Life’s palette to include all facets of home interior design – hence the recent change of name to Country Life Interiors. A year ago Kate joined Country Life as their Curtain/Design Consultant. Kate has a Bachelor of Interior Design degree. She worked in the kitchen industry for

four years in Hutt Valley before moving to Wairarapa. Kate had been working as a Window Furnishings consultant since then, and has brought her experience and friendly personality to Country Life. One of the things Kate enjoys most about her role is the wide range of options she is able to offer her clients. Country Life Interiors is the exclusive stockist of Sanderson fabric and wallpapers and it has one of the largest selection of drapery and upholstery samples in Wairarapa. Kate will come to your home or business for a free consultation, measure and quote for curtains and blinds including romans, sunscreens, roller and timber blinds, venetians, honeycomb blinds and shutters. She can advise on wallpaper, furniture, colours, textiles, accessories and general interior furnishings, including cushions and squabs. Toni and Kate are both looking forward to seeing you at their fabulous Kuripuni village location (431 Queen St) to assist with your home furnishing project.

HELPING OTHERS ON THEIR JOURNEY TO OPTIMAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS When she was young, Wendy Mouldey was the one her many brothers and sisters would go to, to get “patched up”.

18-month Certification Course out of the United States as a Life Coach, amongst others.

Now Wendy is helping others towards improved health and wellness.

Wendy is presently training as an Advanced Health Coach with the Kaizen Institute of Health in Australia. The word Kaizen is Japanese and translates as “small changes for the better”, and perfectly describes Wendy’s philosophy to health, fitness and life.

Wendy is just about to open the Fitness Plus Health Centre at her home – a beautiful and tranquil setting at the foothills of the Tararuas, west of Carterton. The full centre has yet to open but it is already looking amazing, especially the heated indoor swimming pool which features a Fastlane, and a hydraulic treadmill; the same one used by the All Blacks and other top athletes. Fitness Plus is much more than just a fitness centre though. Wendy will be offering Health Coaching, Life Coaching, Exercise Prescription and Circuit Classes, and will eventually host seminars and talks on health-related subjects. Wendy began in the health & fitness industry in 1985 in Singapore. Since closing her Gym in Carterton she has undertaken a Bachelor of Sports Science at Massey University and completed an

Wendy always starts with what her clients need to achieve first. They may feel constantly tired or are perhaps recovering from surgery. Their goal might be to lose weight, run around with the Grandchildren, or just be able to enjoy life more. “Why am I doing this ” Wendy asks? “Because I know I came to this life to make a difference. So many people out there are in need of a Health Coach and a Wellness Plan and I really can’t wait to get started again in our fantastic new facility”

WOMEN IN BUSINESS 2017 ONE BY ONE - GRAPHIC DESIGN

MITRE 10 MEGA MASTERTON

SUE TURVEY

KIM NICHOLLS

TELLING STORIES THROUGH DESIGN Usually Sue Turvey’s commissions are on a smaller scale – branding, company reports, packaging, wine labels, stationery. But presently her work can be found in every gallery at Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art & History.

In 2000 Sue returned to Masterton with her family and worked independently as One By One. While exhibition graphics is at the grander end of the scale, Sue is just as happy doing smaller projects, enjoying the variety and relationships formed.

BRINGING THE RIGHT TOOLS TO THE TRADE DEPARTMENT

Sue was responsible for the graphics for the exhibition Te Marae o Rongotaketake – Redressing our Kahungunu History. She designed the logo, text panels and many of the visual elements of what is the largest exhibition of Ngāti Kahungunu taonga ever put on display.

Examples of her work can be found all over Wairarapa and further afield, from signage on vehicles and buildings, to packaging in supermarkets, branding and stationery.

Mitre 10 MEGA Masterton is proving it’s not just a man’s world in its Trade Department. Last month Kim Nicholls became the Trade Manager at the Ngaumutawa Road store.

Along with her technical skills, Sue’s talent lies in her natural empathy and creativity.

Sue worked closely with Concept Developer Marcus Boroughs who in turn was working with the show’s curator Haami Te Whaiti. “Marcus had a vision and we worked collaboratively towards achieving that, within a tight deadline.”

“I like to meet clients in person, to get to know them better, gaining a feel for their style, establishing their likes and dislikes, their business and market. I am telling their story so I want to represent their vision in my designs.“

Kim came to the Masterton store from Mitre 10 MEGA Palmerston North two years ago, after already making regular visits to Wairarapa to be with her partner Nigel.

Sue grew up in Masterton, attended Makoura College and discovered a flair for tech drawing, leading to her first job locally at the Ministry of Works’ Draughting & Surveys Department.

Outside work, one of Sue’s current enthusiasms is snooker which she took up about two years ago, already winning the Intermediate Handicap title at the Masterton Club. “My father taught me to play as a youngster and I feel privileged to have been passed on his cue.”

An OE in Britain saw Sue doing town planning proposals for a company working in Saudi Arabia, before coming back to Wellington to work in graphic design.

Kim applied for the role of Trade Manager but when that wasn’t available, the store instead offered her the role of Retail Manager which covers all other departments. Her previous experience in the trades yard at Palmerston North will be an asset in her new role, says Financial Controller Maria Majboroda. “Palmerston North has very good processes that Kim will bring to the Trade Department. And she has done really well in the Retail role. She is our first female

Trade Manager and while there have been a few female trade managers – there’s not been a lot.” Kim has spent most of her working life around the Mitre 10 brand. She grew up in Feilding, working first on the trade floor at Feilding Mitre 10, and then Palmerston North. Having good processes is essential to running a good Trade Department, says Kim. “You need the right stock at the right time, a high level of knowledge on the floor, and the right staff serving at the right time. Tradesmen know what they are looking for. You don’t need to be pushy you just need to know your product.” Kim is a self-confessed power tool maniac. “I love power tools. My dad is a mechanic so I’ve always felt comfortable in these sorts of environments.”

From foundations to fenceline, you can get the whole job done with Mitre 10 MEGA

LINDA BUICK CLOTHING

WENDY WALDERGRAVE, ANDREA BRITTON AND KAREN TOMURI

KAREN TOMURI, ANDREA BRITTON, WENDY WALDERGRAVE AND CHRISTINE PARKER

SINGLE-HANDEDLY CREATING A HOME LIFESTYLE HUB Entering the gateway to Greytown from the north, it’s impossible to miss the transformation that has been taking shape on the corner of Main and North streets. Last year Karen and Gary Tomuri purchased the corner property, moving their home lifestyle business Nirvana Interiors there from Queen Street in Masterton - but that was only the beginning of their plans. They also added to their great service team Manager Wendy Waldergrave, Andrea Britton and Christine Parker. “It’s been a very busy first year,” says Karen. “The existing shop on the corner was just being used for storage. We renovated that, demolished the middle building, and renovated the other warehouse space, subdivided the section at the end, and built South Wairarapa’s first Councilapproved yurt which will eventually become a bed & breakfast.” A location that might have been seen as too far away from the centre of town by most businesses was ideal for Karen and Gary.

LINDA BUICK

AN EXTRAORDINARY LINE OF FASHION DESIGNS Tucked away in the centre of Masterton’s CBD is the boutique fashion store Linda Buick Clothing.

“This was exactly what we looking for. I remember I used to hop in the car and go to destination shopping locations as a real treat. We wanted to create a destination hub here, where people can wander from space to space in a relaxing environment with plenty of parking nearby.”

Linda Buick has been designing and sewing her own lines of women’s fashion for more than 20 years, with customers throughout New Zealand, selling at the Martinborough Fair as well as through various stores including Lennox Design in Masterton and Invest in Greytown.

With work on the project completed, Nirvana Interiors occupies the original building on the corner, a larger space than the Masterton store, which the couple have filled with homeware and accessories from around New Zealand and the globe.

Last year Linda spied the empty premises next to Jim’s Hairdressing in Bannister Street, and on the spur of the moment decided to open her own shop.

Where the demolished building once stood, the couple have built an entirely new space which will house a new and expanded collection of designer furniture and floor rugs. From the beginning of June, Peace of Mind Security, which was located in central Greytown, will inhabit the west building with a much larger showroom than they previously had, enabling them to expand their range of window treatments available for viewing.

She has kept the boutique store simple with her beautiful range of clothing neatly displayed at the front and her work space where she designs and sews at the rear. Linda Buick Clothing’s foundation garments are Linda’s dresses and skirts. These are complemented by a selection of tops, cardigans and boleros. Linda uses quality natural material, mostly cotton, merino and linen, incorporating synthetic blends where appropriate. Linda comes up with new designs at the beginning of each summer and winter. After a summer of cheerful patterns and warm colours, she is now working on

a winter wardrobe of subdued blacks, blues, greens and reds with the occasional splash of colour in a combination of plain and patterned fabrics. One of Linda’s recent designs, recently displayed on her Facebook page, is a gorgeous patterned blue/black dress with accompanying merino bodice. The dresses and tops of Linda Buick Clothing have a casual elegance and warm feminine lines. Linda starts with a simple design, allowing the quality of the materials to speak for themselves, then adds subtle elements for added panache, such as her empire-style dresses and tops with square and round collars. Linda has a gift for making materials, patterns, colours and shapes work beautifully together to create outfits that are beautiful to look at, comfortable to wear and practical for every-day life. If there is something on the rack that is not quite the right fit, Linda can alter it to fit you perfectly, or if the fabric is available, make a new one. She can also make to order in any of her styles and fabrics to fit most sizes, and is happy to adjust the length of dresses and sleeves to suit customer’s preferences.

DONNA PARSONS, CASEY MORRIS AND JANINE O’HARA

KEEPING WAIRARAPA SAFE ON THE ROAD Casey Morris and Alex Bilton began Motorworks Mechanical & Electrical Ltd two years ago in an existing workshop in Russell Street, opposite The Warehouse. Motorworks is unique in Wairarapa as it offers both Auto Electrical and Mechanical services and repairs. It is also the only automotive workshop to offer comprehensive air-conditioning services and repairs. “This means our clients only need to take their vehicle to one workshop for all their automotive needs,” says Casey. This combo reflects the backgrounds of the couple. Alex is a qualified Auto Electrician while Casey comes from a background in automotive parts. Motorworks has an excellent team with two new members. Donna Parsons is the new Parts Co-Ordinator, joining Casey at the front counter. She has exceptional customer service skills and is looking forward to meeting new and current Motorworks clients.

Technicians Dan Hansen and Ben Nikolaison complete the workshop team. Motorworks services include WOFs, general repairs and servicing, diagnostics, electrical repairs and fabrication, tyres and wheel alignments, air-conditioning and motorhome repairs as well as inexpensive “peace of mind” safety checks for vehicle owners. Casey and Alex, who have two children, Kieran, 4 and Liv, 2, have teamed up with Wairarapa Road Safety and Plunket for a programme which invites parents of car-seat aged children to the workshop to have anchor bolts correctly installed. Motorworks also donates vouchers to Plunket Masterton for installation of children’s car seats.

OFFERING THE BEST OF ALL SHOPPING WORLDS It’s almost a year since Take Note Carterton & Pick A Lily safely settled into much larger premises in the centre of Carterton - a good move that has been well-received by everybody. In some ways the shop is now reminiscent of the old department stores that every Wairarapa town once had. The much larger space has allowed owner Kim Juno to create a spacious shopping environment with individual display areas in different parts of the store so that Carterton residents don’t have to travel out of town to buy their gifts, books, flowers, stationery, cards, toys, art & craft supplies. There is an extensive range of gifts for all age groups, as well as wedding, graduation and baby and an exciting and creative toy and games section, as well as one of the largest card displays in Wairarapa. Customers are constantly surprised by what they find, but probably the thing they are most surprised about is how extensive the store’s stationery range is, and the fact that it includes computer supplies. Kim has a team of four women and

student, Paige Smith at Take Note Carterton & Pick A Lily. Julie McGregor manages the comprehensive art supplies area and is the creator of the amazing window displays while Trin Peterson manages an expansive books and magazines display. The other members of the team are Florists Jayne Dickson and Melissa Bunny. Pick A Lily is a member of the “Interflora Network” so is able to organise flowers to be delivered both nationally and internationally. Take Note Carterton is part of the Paper Plus group so is able to match prices in larger stores anywhere in New Zealand. Being locally owned, Kim is able to tailor her range and special offers for her customers. Since purchasing Take Note Carterton in 2002 the store has been awarded the top Take Note store in New Zealand three times and runner-up once. The best part of the job, says Kim, is the contact with people. With its long-serving staff members, Take Note Carterton offers personalised friendly service seven days a week, including complementary gift wrapping with all purchases.

Rebecca Fisher

Micropigmentation Paramedical & Cosmetic Tattoo Artist

Helping others feel better, not only on the outside but on the inside as well, is what Rebecca Fisher Micropigmentation is all about. Having the technical skills required to do a great job is important, but having empathy for people and understanding what they have been through, is what makes the difference. Originally from Wellington, Rebecca returned to New Zealand from the UK with her husband in 2002 and they decided to settle in the Wairarapa.

“Some fresh country air was high on the agenda after living in London and the hustle and bustle of a big city. We also wanted our children to grow up around their grandparents.” A keen artist all her life, in 2010 she decided to go back to university to study art as an adult student. “The first time I went to university as a college leaver to study Law, I wasn’t really

doing something I was passionate about. This time it was completely different”. Rebecca graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) from Massey University where she was awarded First Class Honours. But life can be full of twists and turns and Rebecca’s life took a sharp turn when early in 2015 she was

diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. “Our world got turned upside down. One minute I was walking across a stage at my graduation ceremony to be capped and the next I was sitting in a doctor’s office being told I had breast cancer. So for the next 2 years our lives were dominated by this”. However, to help her get through the last 12 months

JAZZ, DANCE & DRAMA CENTRE, GREAT PLACE TO DANCE IN MASTERTON SHARON STEVENSCOTTLE IS PRINCIPAL OF THE JAZZ DANCE AND DRAMA CENTRE IN MASTERTON. Purchasing her own building and relocating the studios premises to 11 Edwin Feist Place, Solway, in 2015 has been a huge step forward for the business. I have now been able to expand to include a fabulous staff of senior experienced and qualified teachers who support myself and my students with their skills and passion. They are all Performers, Choreographers and Teachers in their own right and I consider them a very important part of my studio family. Each Teacher brings a different personality, skill set and expertise to their class. The studio provides classes in Angelina Ballerina, American Jazz & Tap, Contemporary, Classical Ballet ,Hip Hop, Broadway Jazz and Technique Conditioning. Adults classes have also become very popular again this year.

RUNNING HER OWN BUSINESS FOR 37 YEARS

Running her own business has been a challenge and commitment that Sharon has proudly managed to make a success of. ‘Teaching Dance is not a job it is a privilege.” On reflection, she admits it has been worth all the long hard hours although at times it seemed a crazy futile obsession. “Dance Teacher hours are not easy. It is an industry rather like hospitality, the hours are not normal and for family and partners it can be difficult. However, if you are passionate about dance you don’t really have any other choice but to follow your heart. What people don’t understand is that the

actual class teaching time is such fun. Its all the book work and planning that takes four times more than the actual time in the studio with the pupils.”

SHARON IS ALSO CODIRECTOR OF THE AMERICAN JAZZ DANCE AFFILIATION AND PHOENIX DANCE INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOPS. The workshops are an Annual NZ Dance convention and involve over 1000 dancers nationally. The two-day workshops feature top Choreographers from LA and Australia. Sharon and her business partner own this company and she has been responsible for the total organisation involved in putting on these events for the past 20 years.

SHARON’S WELL KNOWN ‘OBSESSION’ FOR MUSICAL THEATRE

has resulted in her choreographing over 80 productions, Directing over 50 shows performing in ‘too many to count’, and stage managing, set designing, lighting and wardrobe designing for many others. She was honoured to have been awarded a Merit Award by Musical Theatre NZ for her contribution to Musical Theatre in NZ . “I like the challenges of doing different events, Masterton’s 150th celebration Sesqui Stadium Spectacular was probably the biggest one I’ve done locally. It included over 400 people, marching bands, cars, horses, bikes and sheep. “Sharon was honoured for her work to the community for this event. Sharon has worked as a tutor for the National Youth Drama School and as a Television Make-up artist. Her training over the years has included all facets of

Dance and Theatre work. Naturally pupils at her school are encouraged to follow her creative path. Sharon manages to weave all her skills, theatre craft and passion for performance into studio life which makes being part of

LYNN SIMPSON

DARING TO THINK OUTSIDE THE JEWELLERY BOX Lynn Simpson doesn’t mind being called a black sheep. In fact she takes it as a compliment when refers to jewellery.

Black Sheep has a large range of Pandora jewellery available and is one of the first to get fresh new designs.

It is now eight years since Lynn opened Black Sheep Jewellery in Queen Street, Masterton.

New Zealand’s Karen Walker and Evolve were also foundation brands, while Lynn searched New Zealand and the world for other original manufacturers.

The name was a play on the Wairarapa’s rural character and a taste in jewellery a little outside the square.

She’s particularly excited to be one of only a few shops in New Zealand to be stocking Holly Yashi Jewellery’s handcrafted necklaces, bracelets, earrings with Swarovski crystal and niobium - all made in California.

Call me today, it is always a pleasure to do business with you.

It is this adventurous spirit which has seen Black Sheep thrive. Creativity and a good business head have always accompanied Lynn through her working life.

Nell Macdonald

Her first 20 years were spent at the New Zealand Department of Tourism which “set me up to run my own business. That’s where I learned everything”.

Another of her brands, Kagi Jewellery, manufactures “multitasking” designs that allow women to build their own unique collection as well as rejuvenate old jewellery.

An eclectic mix of ventures followed including five Yankee Doodle Donuts shops, a Kleins Jewellery franchise, sign writing and property development.

Considering the quality of the jewellery, the prices are very affordable, starting from just $20, which is partly due to being a member of the Nationwide Jewellery Group.

“I had a vision for a while of opening my own jewellery store and then the opportunity came up to take on the Pandora franchise for Wairarapa which gave me an anchor for the business.”

Lynn has a loyal team of staff - Amanda Vaughan, Barbara Lambert and Chris Ryan. “We all choose the jewellery. We all have to like it or I don’t buy it.”

WOMEN IN BUSINESS 2017 MARTYGIRL SKINFOOD ADI MCMASTER

JESSIE HUNT LAWYER

MARTINBOROUGH’S OWN 100% NATURAL SKINCARE RANGE MARTYGIRL is a natural, ethical skincare range that really works! Every product is 100% handmade and full of sumptuous, skin-softening, soothing, 80% organic, and mostly vegan friendly, local Martinborough ingredients.

JESSIE HUNT

The business was established three years ago by Adi McMaster, a farmer and former chef, based on the philosophy that you shouldn’t put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t eat or don’t recognise.

A VOICE FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT REPRESENT THEMSELVES

Every product is personally made by Adi in small batches of up to 10 with as many ingredients as possible sourced locally. Many ingredients come from our 1100 acre farm 15 minutes out of Martinborough. “The manuka honey, beeswax and pollen come from 60 beehives. I forage kawakawa, tawhini, tea tree, manuka, mullian, chickweed and plantain leaves. “I also grow rosemary, parsley, calendula flowers, olive leaves, rose petals and bay leaves.” The ingredients are researched extensively before Adi infuses them in beautiful oils, tinctures or glycerine in a gentle way that slowly draws out their healing properties. These are made into 24 products from body scrubs and beard balms, to hand creams and face masks. Three year’s ago MARTYGIRL skinfood won the Solo Mio category of the David Awards for “Heroes in Small Business”. It was also a runner-up in the Enterprising Rural Women’s Awards two year’s ago.

about MARTYGIRL is her close personal connection with her customers, with MARTYGIRL products only available directly from Adi via her website www.martygirl.com Workshops and slather events have become a huge part of Adi’s skincare business. “What I didn’t see coming at all are talks and demos at schools, and special Make & Take home workshops, which I now love – showing people that huge companies aren’t always the best way to go, and that supporting small local ethical businesses are another option.”

It was one of just five New Zealand businesses accepted for this year’s WOMAD Music Festival in New Plymouth for its ethics and sustainability practices. “I can, and use, what is readily available in my environment.” One of the things Adi values most

A desire to represent those who aren’t able to stand up for themselves is the foundation of Jessie Hunt’s practice as a lawyer. While finishing off her legal studies Jessie trained in both administrative legal work and litigation but it was in the latter that she found her passion. “I thought, ‘this is what I want to do’, representing people and putting their side of the story across so they are heard. “I really enjoy being in court, helping people resolve their issues so they can move on with their lives.” Jessie grew up in Masterton, going to Cornwall Street School, Masterton Intermediate and Wairarapa College. “I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer, ever since I was little,” she remembers. Jessie studied for two years at Canterbury University and three at Victoria, then practised family and criminal law at law firm Osborne Gray at Whakatane. After working for Masterton law firm Gawith Burridge for seven years, Jessie decided to go into sole practice four years ago.

“Having my own practice has given me flexibility so that I can spend time with my family.” A large part of Jessie’s work is acting as a court-appointed lawyer for children whose families are involved in court processes. “I enjoy acting for children and getting the best outcome for them,” she says. Another significant part of Jessie’s work is relationship property. She also undertakes legal aid work. Her office and meeting rooms are in a lovely century-old former residence in Perry Street, which provides a calming environment for her clients. “I work in a pragmatic way to help people through what is an incredibly stressful time.” Jessie loves living in Wairarapa and enjoys being part of the community. She is in her second term on the Lakeview Board of Trustees and she is a member of the Wairarapa District Licensing Committee.

PROVIDING A UNIQUE VEHICLE SALES SERVICE IN WAIRARAPA There’s nothing intimidating about Auto Imports & Wholesale, thanks in part to the three women who work in its office. Vicki, Aroha and Brigitte bring a friendly and informal atmosphere to the business at 134 Dixon Street, Masterton.

“Not many women sell cars, but I thought I would give it a go and love it. I like dealing with the customers. It is satisfying seeing them excited and happy with their new vehicle which they are the first to own in New Zealand.”

Auto Imports & Wholesale specialises in importing vehicles from Japan. Every vehicle gets a service check and new WOF from the business’s onsite mechanic before going on display in the yard which straddles Dixon and Queen Streets.

Aroha joined Auto Imports & Wholesale almost a year ago as an administrator for MTF and is the go-to person for any inquiries.

The business caters for all tastes from small models like the Toyota Vitz to big Dodge Chargers, as well as exotic cars like Jaguar and Rolls Royce. Owner Lawson Hoggart is also happy to search out particular brands and models for customers. Auto Imports & Wholesale has a vehicle finance arm, Motor Trade Finance (MTF), to provide customers with finance to purchase the vehicle of their choice. Vicki joined Auto Imports & Wholesale two years ago in Sales after previously working as a property manager for Harcourts Real Estate and manages the office but still enjoys some time selling in the yard.

“It’s always an interesting job with no two days the same,” she says. “Our office is a very busy place and we want it to feel like a comfortable environment for customers.” The third member of the office team is Brigitte who joined Auto Imports & Wholesale two months ago in Administration and the Workshop. All three women grew up in Masterton and Vicki points out that Auto Imports & Wholesale values providing employment for locals. “We have 11 staff and like to make them feel like they are part of a family that cares about them.”

KADIA MERRALLS

JILL ROSE

THE PERFECT SETTING, THE PERFECT PLACE

CELEBRATE LIVING WITH A GORGEOUS HANDMADE BOOK OR COVER

People ask me why I am so passionate about organising & hosting weddings, milestone birthdays, special anniversaries, Christmas events, in fact everything I do! The answer is simple. I love what I do and I love making people happy. I live by the philosophy that what you do is so much more than just making money. It’s about being creative, paying attention to detail, listening to what people want, being innovative and always giving value added. This year we’re promoting vintage-style weddings – all the rage in Europe. Lansdowne House provides the ideal setting. Not only is the house classic vintage, but our fabulous range of vintage memorabilia and treasured antiques offer the perfect backdrop for a vintage wedding. Moreover, winter or summer, rain or shine, the weather doesn’t affect us and photographers love us! Helping people to design their special day is something I particularly enjoy. I meet local couples several times prior to their day to discuss menu options, colours, table decorations & more. Some couples, however, live overseas so everything is organised by email. When they arrive here they have placed their total trust in me to create their perfect occasion. I’ve never let anyone down. Are there any frustrations? Not many but one does stand out! People leave it too late to book their special day...

and I’m already booked and they’re left disappointed! For me, a ‘thank you’ letter from Natalie Bannister – a beautiful March bride says it all. She wrote “Thank you so much Kadia and all the staff at Lansdowne House. We had the best weekend ever. The planning leading up to the wedding went so smoothly. Kadia was so helpful and full of great suggestions and ideas. The venue was set up so beautifully and looked even better than we could have imagined. And then there was the food – what a spectacular feast! Absolutely everything tasted amazing, and we had so many comments made to us both that evening and the next day about how great the food was – everyone was so full! We loved that they specially got in Coronas and sweet sparkling wine for us to enjoy. Everything went so smoothly and was just perfect for us and that was in huge part thanks to Kadia and her team. Thank you so much, you have helped us make special memories that will last a life time.” Justin’s mother added that “from the moment Nataile and Justin met me they felt safe in my hands”. That’s why I do it! Kadia invites you to look at their website www.lansdownehouse.co.nz and also their Facebook, phone 378 2097 or email lansdownehouse@xtra.co.nz

Entering the last three International Designer Bookbinders competitions has allowed local bookbinder Jill Rose to exercise her creative juices. Although not placing, Jill says that just finding a book in the correct category and designing a cover has been the best kind of fun. “ I would love to do this for other people. When people buy a lovely book as a gift for a loved one, why not go the whole hog and have a bespoke designed cover put on it?” Jill is happy to work with book owners to create a totally unique binding. “I love repairing old books of course, but there is nothing like crafting a beautiful binding that no one else in the world will have.” Jill is able to make many other special creations. ‘In Loving Memory Books’ are made from a collection of special event greeting cards and can incorporate emails, letters, speeches as well as DVDs. These are a great way to celebrate a special event, birthday, wedding anniversary or

the passing of a loved one. The digital camera has led to the demise of the traditional photograph album. But who wants to troll through someone’s photos on a computer? Why not have a gorgeous album made to show off the best of your photos. A wide range of colours, materials, shapes and sizes will allow you to have an album which is totally unique to you. Most storebought albums can also be added to, altered, improved and lettered. Forty-two years working in the bookbinding industry in New Zealand and England has given Jill a wide range of experience and skills to help you create a piece of your own magic. Spellbound Bookbinding has a wide range of equipment which allows Jill to make a huge range of binding styles. If you would like to see this equipment in action then come along to the open day on Sunday 28th May. VANIA IRELAND, JENNY SUTHERLAND AND CHRISTINE PARKER

TIMELESS JEWELLERY AND WATCHES From its collection of jewellery and watches to the three ladies behind the counter, there is something ageless about Masterton Showcase Jewellers. The secret, Vania Ireland believes, is that Masterton Showcase has always stayed with classic tastes in both traditional and contemporary jewellery and timewear. Vania has been with Masterton Showcase since 2005, first as a staff member and now as owner with husband Craig. Another dimension was added to the business when Vania’s mother Jenny Sutherland joined the shop as a retail assistant and its ace pearl re-threader. Both mother and daughter have been in retail all their life. Jenny has worked in numerous businesses around Masterton since the 1970s while Vania has worked in retail since she left school. Christine Parker has recently returned to a part-time retail assistant role while Vania and Craig’s daughter Amber works on Saturdays. Masterton Showcase has a large range

of sterling silver, gold and diamond jewellery. Over the past two years it has been steadily increasing its selection of quality watches, introducing new brands and styles.

Life is a pain for thousands of New Zealanders. In fact, around 23 percent of adults experience ongoing moderate to severe pain, according to the New Zealand Medical Journal.

She was a member of the “Hutt Valley Pain Team” based at Hutt Hospital, moving to Wairarapa seven years ago and establishing a clinic at 67 Villa Street, Masterton.

It is the exclusive stockist of Nixon men’s and women’s watches in Wairarapa. Marketed at the youth lifestyle market, these are custom-built, quality watches in a full-spectrum of designs to reflect personal lifestyles.

It is a burden that most chronic pain sufferers bear as a normal part of life, and attempt to reduce by taking large amounts of medication.

Among the tools Julianne gives her patients are simple home programmes including effective distraction and relaxation techniques. She also introduces them to beneficial exercise as this helps improve mood.

It now also stocks Casio Sheen, elegant, brilliant and smart designs engineered for women who are going places. Repairs are a big part of Masterton Showcase’s business - both jewellery and watches. It offers watch battery and strap replacements on site, jewellery cleaning, valuations, insurance quotes, ear and nose piercing and free gift wrapping. Vania and her team welcome you to visit Masterton Showcase Jewellers at 176 Queen Street, near 10 O’Clock Cookie.

Flow-on effects can include poor physical and mental health, limitations on daily functions and even a shorter life. While Julianne O’Donnell can’t promise to remove the pain, she does help her clients to manage it better and continue leading satisfying lives. This is an area where general practice doctors do not have the time to go into, in any depth. Julianne became interested in specific pain management techniques when she worked in sports injury with the Australian Institute of Sport, before moving into pain management, completing a Master of Physiotherapy (Rehabilitation) with a large part of the study in this field.

“Exercise can be very useful as the body produces its own endorphins which are one of the strongest pain reliefs you can get.” Some of Julianne’s clients are referred from ACC, physiotherapists and GPs while others come of their own accord. Their reasons for seeking assistance vary greatly, from clients who have to return to work, to others wanting to reduce their dependence on heavy medication. Before Julianne takes on a client, she first gives them a free consultation to find out more about their situation and ascertain if she is able to help them.

“THE ESSENTIAL WOMEN’S SHOPPING SPACE”

24 YEARS OF NURTURING CHILDREN

Julie Tulloch and Sophie McCoy have gone the whole nine yards with their new design store in Kuripuni which will open at the end of May. The friends had originally planned to occupy just a part of the renovated premises at 209 Chapel Street in Kuripuni, but now have decided to lease the entire building. The new store will be a cornucopia of furniture, furnishings and giftware for both home and living. “The new space already looks amazing,” says Julie. “It’s twice as big so there is a lot more room to display our great new product.” “It will be a women’s essential shopping space,” adds Sophie. Both Julie and Sophie each have more than two decades experience as Colour and Interior Design Consultants, and have been friends for just as long. Opening The Whole Nine Yards six months ago was just the beginning. Since then the business has been evolving to the point where it now one of the Wairarapa’s most distinctive home living stores.

The shop has a superb mix of furniture from a unique black velvet couch to an antique-style leather couch. Local artists and designers have supplied one-off lampshades, silk screen cushions and wall hangings.

In January this year Lansdowne Private Child Care and Pre School celebrated its 24th birthday. Since Toni Devenny opened the centre in 1993 it has become one of Masterton’s longest running and most well-respected Early Childhood Centres.

Clothing accessories include trend setting merino ponchos, scarves, Mongolian throws, and some beautiful jewellery.

“My background was nursing but I always had an interest in early childhood education,” Toni says.

Julie and Sophie can advise on all aspects of interior design from wall colours to curtains and blinds, to accessories, furniture, carpets, tiles and vinyl.

“When my own children were at primary school I used to provide homecare for other parents’ children.

The Whole Nine Yards is one of only two local stockists of Resene fabrics and has an amazing range of wallpapers from Malcolm and Icon fabrics. With the colder weather, the store has a very large range of fabrics and linings for windows including really warm “bumph” interlining. Julie and Sophie invite both existing and new customers to discover The Whole Nine Years at its new Kuripuni address.

“I enjoyed what I was doing but had more people wanting me to look after their children than what I could manage myself. So I looked into starting a childcare centre and it went from there.” Initially Toni opened a mixed – aged centre at 27 First Street, but during the following years the demand for early childhood care and education at the centre grew. To cater for this Toni opened a second centre next door at 25 First Street with the two very much connected. “Having both centres has enabled the babies and toddlers to have their own space, The Nursery, separate from the PreSchool which caters for children aged two and a half to five years.”

There is a set early childhood curriculum at the centre, and Toni has adhered to the same philosophy she had at the beginning which is “to nurture and support our children to grow and learn through their preschool years at an unhurried pace,” according to the Vision Statement. “I don’t believe children should feel pressured - let them explore and learn at their own pace. “I believe the first five years of a child’s life is the only time they have to experience completely free choice. “There are structures and guidelines at the centre but as far as learning and exploring goes, children are encouraged to do this at their own pace and our teachers recognise this.” The nursery is more about nurturing and routine with a focus first and foremost on care, Toni says. “It’s hard for parents to leave their little babies. We have staff who specialise in this area. Lansdowne Private Child Care and Pre School presently has all women teachers from a variety of backgrounds “which brings different strengths and teaching techniques to the centre,” Toni says.

Offering High Quality Care and Education in a Nurturing Environment • We have a specialised nursery for babies and toddlers. • Our Pre School Centre focuses on preparing children to become lifelong learners. • 20 Hours ECE Subsidy for all 3 and 4 year old children. • Spacious indoor/outdoor play areas.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS 2017 LANSDOWNE NURSERY

RAEWYN WILSON LIVING BOTANICALS

THE GENTLE WAY TO WELLBEING

MARILYN HUNT

MAKING NEW ZEALAND REGIONS BEAUTIFUL ALL YEAR ROUND The next time you drive around a roundabout full of beautiful flowering plants, you will quite likely be admiring the work of Marilyn Hunt. Marilyn is the co-owner of Lansdowne Nursery. Based at Te Ore Ore, the gardening business is not well-known to the public but is one of the major wholesalers of flower bedding plants, potted colour and hanging baskets in the lower North Island.

When the couple saw the century-old Lansdowne Nursery was up for sale, they decided to buy it. “We have always worked hard so felt the need to work for ourselves and reap the rewards.” Paul - the nursery’s builder and project manager - is the only man you will find at Lansdowne Nursery.

It grows nearly a million plants every year which find their way to garden centres and councils throughout Wairarapa, Wellington, Manawatu, Taranaki and Hawkes Bay.

Marilyn has gathered around her a core of 10 staff - all women - who are employed from spring to autumn. Most of them have been with Marilyn for years with 2IC Angela Grant joining the business six years ago. Every day Marilyn supplies them a morning tea of home-made sweet treats and cheese & crackers.

When Marilyn and partner Paul Foster took over the business 20 years ago, Marilyn had no horticulture experience other than a huge love of gardening.

“Girls are harder workers than guys and they work well together. Generally they think out of the square and can multitask.”

She grew up on a dairy farm at Te Whiti and after studying at Makoura College headed off to Britain in the early eighties. The birth of her daughter Jessie brought Marilyn home to Masterton again and a job at Hedley’s Bookshop for 13 years.

Marilyn stays involved in every aspect of the business from the bookwork to doing deliveries in the business’s two trucks. “I never ask my staff to do anything I haven’t done.”

We women are often so busy looking after other people that our own health comes last on the list. I’ve been there myself! As a working woman, wife, mother and now grandmother, I learnt the hard way how important it is to prioritise your own wellbeing. In fact the key to enjoying a great life and being there for others is to first take care of yourself.... Ten years ago, I was struggling with a major illness and the various drugs I was being prescribed were only making matters worse. I felt powerless because my health decisions always seemed to be in somebody else’s hands. Then a friend suggested I try Bach Flower Remedies. After several sessions, I was simply amazed at the improvements that started to happen. In fact, it was this experience that eventually inspired me to become a registered practitioner so that I can help others get their health and wellbeing back on track.

• Anxiety • Depression • Bereavement • Rehabilitation after illness or surgery • Insomnia • Stress • Shock & trauma • Major life changes • Overwhelm Bach Flowers are ideal for these situations. By talking together, we can find the key emotion or emotions underlying your wellbeing issue. Then I’ll recommend a mix of plant and flower-based remedies chosen from the 38 developed by esteemed bacteriologist, physician and pathologist Dr Edward Bach. I can also help if your child or a pet is unwell.

I’ve loved seeing the benefits that can be achieved for my clients using safe, gentle and effective Bach Flowers. I am available for consultations at my rooms in Greytown, or via phone or email - whichever is most convenient for you.

Joelle trained and worked in Wellington before moving to Brisbane where she managed an award-winning beauty salon in Paddington for 7 years. “I am truly passionate about helping others, so it was a great privilege to be leading and mentoring a team of therapists. Some were just new to the industry and needed a lot of one-on-one guidance, whereas others were able to share their experience and love of the beauty industry with me”. Joelle was a finalist in the ABIA (Australian Beauty Industry Awards) for Salon Manager of the Year in 2016. The red carpet event was held in Darling Harbour in Sydney, Australia. “It was an honour and privilege to be alongside some of my industry idols, and it was certainly a highlight of my career thus far.” During her time in Brisbane she was also part of the team to win Ultraceuticals Clinic of the Year in 2012 & 2016. Last year Joelle and her husband and 2 children, moved to Carterton to join her brother Ryan Monastra from Back In Action to work at ‘The Hubb’ premises. This purpose-built facility incorporates the specialist skills of Physiotherapists, Chiropractic, Massage Therapy and now Beauty Therapy treatments with Joelle coming on board. A member of the New Zealand Association of Registered Beauty Therapists and certified IPL technician, Joelle offers all traditional beauty therapies, specialising in advanced skin treatments such as diamond microdermabrasion, active facial peels. Facial treatments target a range of skin concerns such as dehydration, acne, pigmentation and ageing.

YOUR GUIDE TO A WORLD OF BEAUTIFUL GIFTS “My passion is to help you feel confident and comfortable in your skin. I believe in empowering your mind with knowledge and nurturing the body and soul. Most of all, I want your skin to reflect the true beauty within.” Joelle works with Ultraceuticals, an Australian skincare range exclusive to Beauty Within Boutique in Wairarapa. “It is results-driven skincare, using highly effective active ingredients. It’s also certified cruelty free and does not contain harsh chemicals or synthetic fragrances.”

Carterton shopping wouldn’t be quite the same without Tryst on High - or Michelle Watt. Michelle’s sunshine personality never fails to brighten up the day of people who explore the shop in the heart of the shopping centre. They might be drawn inside by the scent of incense but Michelle’s personality and the sheer variety of giftware on display keeps them there. Michelle has been the face of Tryst on High for the past eight years. She grew up in Masterton and had been working for Rosie and Matt Carter at Paua World for eight years when she heard they were looking for a new person for their “cool new shop in Carterton”.

For all new clients Joelle offers a 10% treatment discount. There are also monthly promotions, concession rates and regular facebook prizes to be won. Gift vouchers are available all year round, and tastefully boxed and wrapped for you. So many reasons to book in with Joelle from Beauty Within Boutique.

“When I heard, I said to Rosie ‘please let me work here’.”

from the 1970s. But she is always keeping an eye out for new product that will appeal as well. “There’s always something new. Sometimes a leap of faith and having a sense of what our customers will like.” Tryst on High is nothing if not eclectic, its stock ranges from New Zealand-made natural soaps to yeast supplements to stay healthy and well over winter. In the entrance are ceramic pots for storing onions and potatoes while sitting on the counter is a set of Kua Yin Oracle affirmation cards. The cane baskets in various shapes and sizes hanging outside the shop are always popular, especially in winter as a practical and attractive way to store wood next to the fireplace. Spending time in Tryst is like taking a trip around the world. Some products come from the foot of the Himalayas such as the Tibetan singing bowls, but others have been made just a few kilometres away by local arts & craft artists such as the beautiful decorative leadlight by Sandra Bergh. Wherever the journey takes you, Michelle is always your friendly guide.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS 2017 CARTERTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

JANE DAVIS (CENTRE) SURROUNDED BY THE WOMEN OF CARTERTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

CARTERTON’S COOL LITTLE COUNCIL The past year has seen many positive changes at Carterton District Council, with women playing an important role in many of them. Carterton District Council has close to an equal representation of male and female employees with women holding 21 of the 50 roles Leading from the front is Chief Executive Jane Davis. Jane joined Carterton District Council 18 months ago, coming from Greater Welllington Regional Council where she was General Manager Strategy and Community Engagement which saw her involved in planning for a broad range of “big picture” areas including climate change, transport and economic development. With a comparatively small number of staff, Jane has been encouraging a less hierarchical structure. “I’ve got a strong philosophy that the buck stops with me, but I also believe in empowering others to make decisions.

“People are always an important part of the way I do leadership and I believe in encouraging our staff to grow through mentoring. That is something I personally aspire to and my door is always open.” The past year has seen Carterton District Council change the way it interacts with Carterton residents. “It was already the desire of our Councillors that we should be more community-led. The council has traditionally been more operations focused. Now we include the community in the design of what we do and how we do it. “Instead of the council making decisions and then asking the public how they feel about, we want to get the community more involved in decision-making from the very beginning. It’s a changed culture and has been quite transformative.” When Jane first arrived, she spent the first few months observing council operations and talking to councillors, staff and the community before introducing changes.

“Rather than unsettle everyone with drastic changes, these have occurred as gently as they could.” Jane has created a number of new roles, some of which have been filled by women. With a strong focus on communication and community engagement, this is where two of the new roles were created. “We have looked to transform the way we communicate with our people. We needed to think about how to deliver information in the most efficient and accurate manner.” We are also seeking to foster community engagement and community-led development for the very young to very old through community networks, organisations and social services. This also incorporates an important focus on building up resilience in the Carterton community through emergency response readiness. Although the newly-created roles are a direct link to where we needed to improve as a council, these roles enhance and support the already vital roles which are established throughout council.

“We are incredibly lucky to have a phenomenal group of highly-skilled women who seamlessly contribute to the day-to-day running of the council. Each of our departments have a strong women influence, and it makes for a well-balanced and efficient environment.” The male-dominated Operations department has also benefited from a strong women influence, with an Operations Administrator being appointed recently, the role filled by a woman. “I am positive if you asked the guys in the operations team, they would proudly tell you how much they value the inclusion of this new role and how it contributes to their successful operations.” Jane is proud of all her staff and believes Carterton District Council is becoming a role model for councils in the 21st century It is also a happy workplace, she says. “No matter what room you walk into, you will always find staff enjoying a good laugh. It’s a cool little council.”

CHRISTIN SCHETTER

A BAVARIAN FARM GIRL WITH A PASSION FOR PROPERTY LAW It’s a long way from Bavaria to a sheep & beef farm at Mount Bruce but that’s where Christin Schetter’s story in New Zealand begins. Christin’s passion for horses from a young age had introduced her to farming which led to her studying for an agricultural degree north of Munich. “I came to New Zealand on an agricultural internship and have pretty much stayed here ever since.” Christin worked in a variety of agricultural roles including vineyards and market gardens before being employed as a legal secretary with a Carterton family law firm. “My boss encouraged me to go to law school, so I did.” Christin started studying law part-time at Victoria University when her son was 3 years old and was admitted to the Bar in 2015. She continued working in family law until March 2016 “but I really wanted to gain property law experience so I approached Barry [Keys] to ask if he would take me under his wing.” “I think it is really good grounding for any

lawyer to have property law experience and here we do not only do a wide range of property law such as all aspects of conveyancing, wills, trusts and estates but also some commercial work.” The former Carterton mayor remembers, “one day she popped her head through my door and asked would I teach her conveyancing and I said yes. “I’m getting on and for well over the last 12 months the property market has been crazy. I was getting to the stage where I didn’t think I would be able to cope on my own. Christin came along at just the right time. She’s a lovely young woman and very assiduous in her work.” Christin enjoys the fact that the law firm has quite a few rural clients. “I still consider myself to be a farm girl and it’s nice to have an interaction with the rural sector from a property law point of view.”

WOMEN IN BUSINESS 2017 MARINA ADAMS & NIKKI MCIVOR WILD HONEY ART

Marina Adams & Nikki McIvor Marina and Nikki are the founders of local eco-brand Wild Honey Art. We take Nikki’s images and put them onto a range of products: art prints and cards, tea towels, linen napkins and organic grocery bags. The brand is sold throughout New Zealand and is gaining momentum in Australia. We think it very important that our products are New Zealand-made. We found it sad to see chinese-made trinkets posing as NZ souvenirs in shops, and passionately believe in supporting local industry. In fact, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do if it wasn’t for the amazing team at Lamb Peters Print in Greytown. Another part of our ethos comes from the integration of our European and indigenous cultures. We love the term ‘cross-culturalisation’, where two cultures meld and grow stronger as a result – like in an ideal marriage. Nikki’s latest works are her Pounamu series, inspired by the greenstone necklaces that Maori traditionally carve and wear. We bonded as a result of being newcomers to the Wairarapa. When we were at home with babies, we’d catch up every week and talk – and eventually we started a small venture together that used our skills and our shared values. Being green, we see the irony in making more “stuff” – but we also wanted to make quality products that will last a long time and will make people feel good about using them. We like to think of our products are being:

Good for everyone, from start to finish.

ST DAVID’S UNION CHURCH

REV. LORNA CLARKE

LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST WITH CHRIST Rev. Lorna Clarke welcomes everyone at St David’s Union Church in Carterton. Chatting to Rev. Lorna, you feel the sense of peace that she testifies comes from Christ and is her most treasured possession. While Christ had always been part of Rev. Lorna’s life, it was only a direct act of healing from the Lord that changed her life completely leading to her being called to Ministry, becoming ordained at age 59; previous to this Rev. Lorna worked for almost 25 years as a bank officer. She had already had two operations when her family took her to a healing meeting. She could feel her body being healed, “My body felt like it was on fire. I knew that He had healed me. At that moment I went from knowing about Jesus to knowing the Lord Himself personally”. Rev. Lorna describes St. David’s as a very welcoming all age church family. “You can walk through the door on a Sunday morning to attend worship, or any day for spiritual guidance, or just a chat, and know that you will be welcomed”. Rev. Lorna is concerned that in today’s society,

• 10am every Sunday • Children are very welcome • Kiddie Gym - every Wednesday 9:30-11am during school term

www.wildhoneyart.co.nz 24

people may not realise that going to church isn’t like belonging to a club where you have to be a member to attend. “When I grew up, I knew I could walk into any church, anywhere, and be welcomed.” That is still the case today. Rev. Lorna particularly loves it when entire families become a part of St. David’s. Rev. Lorna firmly believes that Christ has the answer to any problems in life that might be preventing someone from living their life to the fullest, saying, “Everything can be sorted in Christ - there is nothing impossible with God. Man’s greatest fear is death; Jesus said ‘I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’ Just believe in Jesus Christ. He is our Redeemer, our peace. The good news is this, Jesus lives. He loves you – choose to welcome Him into your life and know that you will spend eternity with Him.” Rev. Lorna is grateful to her supportive family (her husband, three sons, four grandsons and three granddaughters), saying “I love them to bits.”

• 1st Sunday of each month - 6:30pm Worship Service for all ages • 2nd Thursday each month - 11am ‘Sunday on Thursday’ Traditional service followed by lunch

reticulation for new subdivisions, digger hire and excavations. In 2013 the company employed its own electrician, setting it apart from many other powerline companies.

Mandy joined Poltech Power Works in 2004 as a part-time office administrator after working as a secretary for law firm Gawith Burridge.

Mandy and the team are about to feature in an advertisement during Prime TV sports show The Crowd Goes Wild after being chosen from 50 businesses nationwide to promote the Izusu D-Max ute, of which they have four.

Four years earlier the Martinborough business had been founded by former PowerCo employees Gray Carter and Mike Thomas with Darryl (Radar) Rothery buying into the company after Mike retired in 2012. By then Mandy was the fulltime office manager and was invited to be a shareholder and co-owner by Gray and Radar three years later.

They are also excited to now have an interactive website where people can book jobs online at www.poltech.co.nz Mandy believes the culture of the company has played a big part in its success. “ We place a big emphasis on highly-trained staff, health and safety and being an employer of choice.”

Poltech is currently going through a growth phase with Mandy, Gray and Radar all actively contributing to its future direction. From just three employees, Poltech has grown to 12 fulltime employees. It originally only carried out pole assessments but now its services include power line construction and maintenance, new power connections, underground

Looking back, Mandy thinks becoming a co-owner was simply the result of working hard and a good relationship with the partners and staff. For Gray, it was a matter of Mandy being good at her job. “Mandy and I have been working together for 13 years. It’s good to have her perspective. It gives us a sense of balance and normalness.”

WOMEN IN BUSINESS 2017 NATURAL HEALTH THERAPIST

FARMERS DAUGHTER

JANET WILLIAMS

BECKS TOSSWILL

BRINGING RELIEF WITH THE BUTEYKO BREATHING METHOD

PASSION AND DESIGN COMBINE TO MAKE A FARMERS DAUGHTER

A Natural Health Therapist for over 20 years, Janet Williams first began in the field of massage and soon after in Bowen Therapy. Since then Janet’s skills have expanded to include a range of treatments including most recently Bach Flower Remedies.

breathing lessons. You get to understand how it works and what you need to do to help yourself. “Clients have exercises they do at home and they are also shown how to monitor their improvement rather than just being expected to feel better.”

Now Janet has started a new venture and is on her way to being proficient in the Buteyko Breathing Method.

One of Janet’s clients, Hester, had not been able to breathe through her nose for more than 30 years.

Janet went to Sydney to be trained by Patrick McKeown, a world-renowned speaker and instructor of Buteyko Breathing who was taught by Dr Buteyko who developed this method.

“My nose was always blocked, no matter what I tried. Even the specialist overseas said that I would never be able to breathe through my nose because the nose canal was too narrow.

Some of the conditions Buteyko Breathing has been known to improve are asthma symptoms, snoring, sleep apnoea, breathlessness, tightness in the chest, stress, anxiety, poor concentration, fatigue, insomnia, sinusitis and headaches.

“I was tired all the time and at times got stressed out and had the odd panic attack. I also often suffered from indigestion, had bad hay fever, allergies and also asthma.

It is also a useful tool for optimising one’s health, for instance, improving sports performance. Unlike most other therapies, clients are not reliant on regular visits to their practitioner for ongoing treatment.

“Janet gave me some exercises and imagine my surprise when it worked! “I feel much better, have lots more energy, breathe through my nose, my bad hay fever symptoms have disappeared and I haven’t had an asthma attack ever since.”

Janet describes Buteyko as “a course in

Becks Tosswill is one of those people you can’t help but like. Her creativity, positivity and friendliness shine as she talks passionately about her work at her design agency, Farmers Daughter. Actually, you can see it isn’t ‘work’ for Becks at all; it’s a calling. Becks is a natural. In fact, if there’s a ‘design gene’, she has it. But she has also worked hard, perfecting and mastering the art of graphic design and delving further into the world of branding and strategy. Once her Degree in Computer Graphic Design was completed in 2000 (with distinction - an honour bestowed on only one student each year!), Becks honed her skills within the design industry until starting Farmers Daughter eight years ago. Farmers Daughter’s clients range across various rural enterprises such as olive groves and honey producers through to luxury accommodation, retail and software developers. Farmers Daughter’s clients couldn’t be happier with the team’s service. Jo Parker, has worked with Becks over several projects, and is

a self-described fan. “I love working with Becks. She is so approachable and so good at what she does. I bring her the concept and what I need the brand to say – and then I trust her to translate that visually”. The respect between Becks and her clients is mutual, “I love co-creating with inspiring, enthusiastic entrepreneurs - helping bring their ideas to life”. The earlier Becks is involved in the process, the more value she can add – helping take the initial idea and evolving it into a fully thought-through brand, “It’s much more than simply making something work on a page, it has to work in real life, too.” Becks is especially good at listening to her client’s needs and reflecting that into their brands. Becks has a talented design team to help keep up with demand and works from her “creative sanctuary” on her farm with her family and has clients around New Zealand.

Buteyko Breathing Method A different approach to relieving asthma symptoms, stubborn cough, wheezing, hay fever, allergies, snoring, sleep apnoea, anxiety, insomnia, stress and many other breathing related disorders. Breathing re-education techniques and exercises are taught during a series of 4 – 5 small group sessions, 1½ - 2 hours duration over a period of 4 weeks.
