WOMEN IN BUSINESS 2019

MAYOR'S

WELCOME As always, I’m pleased to celebrate all women in business. New Zealand is making positive progress which shows through in the statistics; last year we marked the highest-ever employment rate for women since we began monitoring 30 years ago. It is positive that 62.8 per cent of women across our country are in employment – of course this doesn’t include the employment of motherhood. We can do better. The benefits of a diverse workforce are well-known; including age, ethnicity and gender. With diversity comes more robust conversations and better decision making. It’s a simple fact that each and every one of us thinks differently to the other, having diverse representation in our workplaces helps to ensure these different views are brought into the discussion.

The challenge of encouraging more women into the workplace is multifaceted and requires a shift in our mindsets. We can’t expect everyone to fit into a cookie cutter model of a traditional ‘job’ working between 9-5 with meal breaks. Our lives are busier, we’re doing more and we need more flexibility in our lives. This is especially true for parents and research has shown mothers still take on the majority of childcare, spending more time

looking after children even when both parents work. Employers need to be sympathetic to these demands. We often talk about offering flexible working conditions, that means more than offering a shift in start and finish times, but also enabling employees to adjust their schedules as and when the need arises. We should be putting females into leadership positions so those entering the workforce can see opportunities for themselves in the future. We also need to be aware of unconscious bias and when we see or hear blatant sexism, we need to call it out. I congratulate all of the women featured in the following pages as well as those businesses striving to increase female participation. I look forward to seeing the statistics continue to improve!

Ngā mihi, Lyn.

OVER 545 YEARS COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE IN BANKING Your trusted ANZ branch has been prominent in Wairarapa for over 65 years and is well entrenched in the community servicing Personal, Business and Agri customers from Martinborough through to Dannevirke. ANZ Masterton has resided in several buildings throughout Masterton. In 2012, the National Bank was re-branded to ANZ, and in 2015 the two ANZ banks combined, filling the Lincoln Road branch with over 45 staff. Working for ANZ is like being a part of a huge family, with the longest serving staff member’s banking career starting over 41 years ago. ANZ is an amazing company to work for, offering flexible working hours and location for staff; support during maternity leave for both women and men; caring for extended families, and importantly, has a keen focus on individual growth and development. ANZ’s support in equality and diversity is evident here in Wairarapa with a strong female presence in management positions. With strong values at the core of what we do, ANZ works hard to help people in our communities thrive by supporting sustainable housing; financial well-being and being environmentally sustainable. Offering up-to-date digital tools for customers supports the ANZ promise as a ‘digital bank with a human touch’.

Staff are proud to work for ANZ and enjoy supporting the community. They do this by being involved in events such as Daffodil Day, which has raised over $15 million for the Cancer Society since 1990. Over 16,000 volunteer hours have been completed too by staff in the past year for community organisations. The ANZ New Zealand Staff Foundation Fund involves staff contributing from their pay (matched by the bank dollar for dollar) and these funds are in turn available by grant application for groups to apply for. Since inception in 2000, the Foundation has distributed over $4 million in community grants, to over 550 charities and community projects nationwide. ANZ is committed to being a partner for life from an infant’s account; to school and university; the first job; business or farming opportunities, and into retirement. Drake NZ (Masterton)

Almo’s Books Carterton

Steph Burling BRANCH MANAGER

The helping hands in employment Finding a job, or finding the right person for a job, can be a stressful activity.

is making Steph’s job harder in finding people to fill positions.

This is where Steph Burling at Drake New Zealand comes in. She’s the branch manager in Masterton of one of the world’s oldest employment agencies, Drake International. It all began in 1951 in Winnipeg, Canada, now operating in 12 countries, with 10 branches in New Zealand, including Masterton.

She recites from the ‘Wanted’ list on the office wall. Drain layers; social workers; admin assistant; builders; drivers; an IT technician. The list is vast and varied.

With all that history, Steph has the experience and capability to match the right individuals to the right jobs, whether it be a permanent position or a flexible role.

She wants to visit schools and speak with pupils about what jobs are the most sought after and is keen to educate employers about paying realistic wages in order to retain good staff.

Last year, the Masterton branch placed around 50 people in permanent positions, and hundreds completed temporary assignments, some of which turn into permanent roles.

Married with three young children, she is passionate about building a strong workforce in Wairarapa both now and in the future.

Since moving into the manager’s role from being a consultant, Steph is keen to diversify the company’s activities.

For information on finding great staff or a great job, please contact Steph on 06 378 8059, sburling@nz.drakeintl.com or visit the Drake team at 407-409 Queen Street, Masterton.

Steph moved into the recruitment industry after working in hospitality, and quickly discovered she had an eye for matching up the right people. “The personality fit is crucial. You can often teach skills, especially if people have a hunger to learn, but if the people don’t match, we all just move on.” Wairarapa’s unemployment rate is at 4.3 per cent, the lowest in many years. This

Sue Laurence CO-OWNER

Books: continuing a family tradition Sue Laurence is the co-owner with brother, Steve, of Almo’s Books in Carterton. Describing the bookshop as her “antiretirement plan” she admits they both come from a ‘bookie family’ – their father owned a bookshop in Inglewood. It’s a far cry from their professions. Sue was a secondary school teacher and public servant with Ministry of Health while Steve worked in finance. These skills marry well in running a book store and when the pair opened their shop in December 2010, they were welcomed with open arms in Carterton. At the end of last year, they had outgrown their premises and moved across the high street where they can happily house their 15,000 book stock and lease out an area for a café to boot. “Coffee and books are nice mix,” enthuses Sue “it’s a comfortable combination”. And while that’s a comfort zone, Sue and Steve were totally out of theirs, when they set up Almo’s. “We had so much to learn and we were

stepping in when e-books and online shopping were biting at the book industry. It was a steep learning curve.” But that competition cannot compete with the tactile experience of admiring the wide range of books at Almo’s and leafing through the pages. There’s couches to lounge in and books are displayed in subject matter, including a colourful children’s nook. Almo’s is also proud of its community involvement. It hosts book launches supporting local writers. It supports WaiWord and its array of visiting speakers, and sponsors Booklovers’ Corner on Arrow FM, as well as Dalefield men’s hockey. Local involvement the big internet companies could never compete with. And, another point of difference is Holly, the bookshop dog. The brindle-coloured Staffordshire bull terrier has her own bed and water, carefully tucked under one of card displays. “She goes everywhere with me and is a hit with the children,” says Sue. “Come and meet her.”

Cape Physio

Serene Beauty

Returning healthy function to aching bodies Elizabeth Eneliko

Ana Edwards

PHYSIOTHERAPIST

OWNER Cradling her four-week-old son, Abel, in her arms, Elizabeth Eneliko (Vollebregt), talks of her desire to return home three years ago to family in Wairarapa, where she had grown up, and to progress the profession she loves – physiotherapy. Graduating from the University of Otago, her first job was at Cape Physio in Hawke’s Bay. Impressed by the company and its group dynamics, she jumped at the chance to start a new company with them in Wairarapa and to be the director of the group in her home region. “I was keen to start up my own business and to be able to help the Wairarapa community.” By employing three staff across two clinics she is now able to more extensively support the community. The Masterton clinic is located at 32 Perry Street and the new Carterton clinic, which opened in February this year, is based out of “The Core” in Nelson Crescent, opposite the Carterton Library. CAPE Physios fantastic physiotherapists, Davide Castorina and Olivia Browne are in the Masterton clinic and Martin Kidd is in Carterton. They are equipped with a wide range of skills to help get people back on their feet, back to the things they love and to help people get the most out of life. Elizabeth brings to her practices a Masters in Sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy. She is also a Polestar trained Pilates instructor. Along with a wide scope of experience with representative and club level rugby

teams, she has set up clinics in many of the colleges which Olivia and Davide now look after students in the winter terms.

A patch of peace

“This is a great way to support our community’s youth and teach them the importance of being aware of, and looking after their bodies.”

Ana in Te Reo means serene, hence the name of her beauty therapy business in Tararua Crescent, Carterton – Serene Beauty.

“As physiotherapists we treat a variety of people all who have different goals, it isn’t just people who play sport that get injured and you don’t have to put up with pain. There is often something we can do to help.”

It’s also a great sense of serenity one feels when they step into her studio. The tinkling of the water fountain certainly helps with the ambience. Ana says she is proud of her lovely space and loves seeing her clients leaving feeling great and better for the visit to her!

“Physiotherapists are experts in muscular skeletal injuries and there are many techniques with muscles, ligaments, nerves, fascia and joints that can relieve painful issues in the body.” Physiotherapy techniques can not only relieve pain but also increase mobility and strength overall helping to improve performance. Manual therapy and exercise therapy are two types of therapy that could be involved in treatment. One of the first questions asked when visiting a physiotherapist, is “how did the injury occur?” From there, a treatment plan can evolve in a way specific to each patient and their injury. She believes a lot of people are not able to prioritise their own health due to various things that go on in their daily lives but they would be surprised how accessible and affordable physiotherapy is - and what a difference it can make to general well-being.

Nutrition & Lifestyle Coach Mandy Halligan

Cheers Auto and Tyres Carterton

Re-Shaping Your Life with High Quality Nutrition When Mandy Halligan shed 28 kilos in weight and completely re-shaped her body, friends began asking her what was her secret? She had discovered Herbalife Nutrition - a Nutritional Programme designed to get you healthier from the inside out through nutritional meal smoothies, protein snacks and a range of nutritional supplements to give the body everything it needs in balance. Mandy felt the difference quickly and was excited to share her results with others. “To lead a healthy active lifestyle, it’s 80% Nutrition, 20% Exercise and 100% mind-set,” says Mandy, who now works as a Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach and helps hundreds of people all over New Zealand and internationally get the results they are looking for. What is even better, Mandy has been able to leave behind her 9-5pm banking job as it quickly matched her income by helping others with nutritional help. Mandy also focuses on working alongside others who want this opportunity to coach others and be able to earn extra income or to build it up like she has, to create more options in their lives. Mandy relishes helping others to build incredible businesses from home in and around other family commitments. Mandy lives in Masterton with partner Nick Mitchell who owns Perfect Plastering. They have two children Aleah and Axel and a third child is expected in September. When working in banking over eight years ago, Mandy found she was

lacking energy and in need of losing some weight. Mandy saw a Herbalife Nutritional advert and enquired about the product. She was introduced to Herbalife Nutrition where she quickly decided to jump on to the Fastest Nutritional Programme to ‘Feel Better the Fastest’, lose body fat, cleanse her body, and just feel amazing. Mandy was amazed at how within the first three days she had more energy and was feeling great. As a Nutritional Health Coach, Mandy personalises nutritional programmes for people depending on the sort of health or nutritional results they are looking for. She discusses their options either face to face or by phone, if not local. If they do live locally, Mandy offers a FREE body scan which gives them all the readings of what is happening on the inside of their body It reveals body fat percentage, muscle mass, bone weight, physique rating, body water percentage, abdominal fat rating and metabolic age. Mandy then personalises a nutritional programme to help the individual achieve their desired results through one-on-one coaching and support, coupled with using the nutritional products. The initial body scan takes 30 minutes. Follow-up scans are available monthly to check results “It is such a rewarding job helping others get healthy and achieve personal success,” says Mandy. “Contact me, you will be thrilled you did.”

Jordan Luff

OFFICE MANAGER

Thriving in their newfound town When her partner, Ben Hooper, decided he was in a rut living in Hawera, Jordan Luff happily moved to Wairarapa with him and their two young children. The couple spied Cheers Auto and Tyres for sale in Pembroke St, Carterton, and in January 2018, they became the proud owners. They make quite a team. Ben is a qualified mechanic and Jordan is the office manager dealing with accounts, reception and stock ordering – all things necessary in making a business tick over. They have been so successful that they have been searching for a second qualified mechanic for some months without luck. Jordan feels young people are not taking on trade training anymore and she’s discovered the industry is desperate for more mechanics to fill positions around the country. They have taken on an apprentice to do their bit in helping the industry but the workload needs a second qualified person at Cheers Auto and Tyres.

Meantime, it’s long and busy days for the pair, juggling work and family life. Their son Cooper attends Carterton School and three-year-old Indy goes to day care. The family utterly adore Carterton and wider Wairarapa. “Carterton is so family-oriented and we’ve never had so much to do and see in the outdoors, and it’s all free. It’s such a great place to bring up the children,” says Jordan, whose enthusiasm for the district has attracted her parents to move from Hawera as well. “They have such a busy life now too, we don’t see a lot of them, but it’s nice to know grandparents are nearby if we need them.” The two-bay, four-hoist workshop is a buzz of activity the day we visited Jordan at her desk in reception. Asked how to describe their business “family-friendly” she quickly replies, as eight-year-old Cooper rides by on his scooter.

Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Football Union

Front: Michelle Beaver - Marist, Sharon Parker - Gladstone, Stacey Puddy - Wairarapa-Bush, Trish Hemming - Carterton/Wairarapa-Bush, Jen Bhati - Featherston. Back: Monique Kloeg - Women’s Rugby, Nicola Naucukidi - Eketahuna, Cath Thomson - Gladstone, Abby Maher - Puketoi.

WairarapaBush women power Behind the scenes of every organisation, there’s the support workers, who often quietly go about their business making sure everything runs smoothly. The Wairarapa-Bush rugby teams are no exception to this rule and here we’ve profiled a dozen or so women who make the sport, tick for the region. They may be the team strapper, to the club manager or bar manager, but all play an integral part in Wairarapa-Bush’s successful reputation.

Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Football Union

Trish Heming. Trish, just loves rugby and the comradeship of it all. While never a rugby player, Trish has provided valuable support to the WBRU, Carterton rugby and the Council of Clubs as secretary and committee member. Trish was the administration conduit for the very successful Hurricanes Under 16s in 2018, a tournament that received the highest praises from all the provincial unions. Monique Kloeg. Sponsor, player, manager and coach. Monique has represented Wairarapa-Bush in women’s rugby and is now turning her time to build and drive women’s rugby in Wairarapa again. There is no question, without her enthusiasm such passion for the game women’s rugby may not have been back on the road again in 2018. Monique’s personality enthuses confidence in everyone around her. Stacey Puddy. In her second full year as the Club Rugby Administrator and Operations, Stacey has earnt the respect of the clubs and other provincial unions for being organised, running successful tournaments, competition and representative games without error or hassle. The WBRU has received many compliments from outside the district on the manner Stacey represents the union and the clubs.

Masterton Red Star Women

Michelle Mortensen has been a club member since 1989 (Red Star). Michelle became a

Committee Member in 2006 (Masterton Red Star) and has held the roles of Secretary and Vice-President during her term on the committee until 2017. Michelle has also been the club photographer since 2007. She goes to our games and takes photos of the game and will bring them back and puts them on a laptop in the clubrooms for players to view. There are several printed photos Michelle has taken that are up on the clubrooms walls. Michelle has been a loyal and active member of our club and is always willing to assist with things to help the club out. Masterton Red Star would also like to acknowledge Allison Sanson for her on-going contribution to the club.

East Coast Rugby Club

At East Coast, we no longer just thank the ‘women’ at our after-match speeches. The women in our club are not just the supporting partners of our rugby playing men, they are an integral part of the club as a whole. Our club captains Lisa Wyeth and Nicole JamesBoyce do more than just that. Lisa is one of our bar managers, a committee member, and the club’s photographer. Nicole heads our administration, is a committee member, and runs our social media platform. All the mahi these two women volunteer, together with their personalities and skills, has our club very organised and proactive. We are blessed to have Nicole and Lisa at East Coast.

Eketahuna Rugby Football Club (Inc)

Nicola, our club secretary brings efficiency and humour to her position. Efficiency to help the club run smoothly and humour to keep “the blokes” on course and when needed, some brutal honesty. Always prepared to do the extra when required, Nicola has cleaned, cooked, been bar person, taken bookings for the clubrooms and club van as well as help organise club events. She is a true character, and vital part of our club!

Featherston Rugby Club

Jen is a natural leader. When she presented the committee with an issue to deal with, she would also have a range of solutions prepared. As a new business owner, parent and active volunteer Jen has an impressive schedule and time management skills. Jen tells her story to the children of the club, the girls pay special attention, she inspires and motivates the girls to do their best, ask questions and encourages them to grow in to strong, independent women. Working with someone like Jen is

Y B G U R

“IT’S YOU”

so rewarding, says Ritchie Wards, President of Featherston Rugby Club. You leave a meeting knowing actions are complete and have a clear understanding of the next steps. Starting her own business has seen Jen enter a new world of paper work and administration - one no business owner really enjoys! Jen looks at it with positivity and sees the end result.

Puketoi Rugby Club

There is one thing the Pongaroa community all says about Abbey Maher; she isn’t afraid of hard work. She is one of three first responders for the Pongaroa ambulance, which Abbey religiously “wo-man’s” at all Puketoi home games, successfully patching up many wounded. Abbey also travels to every away game as the medic/physio. She volunteers her time in numerous community events and committees including: “The Pongaroar”, Akitio dog trials, “Pongaroa Top Team” and the Puketoi rugby club to name a few. Abbey truly gives up a huge proportion of her spare time for the community. Outside of this you’ll find her working in the back blocks of Sugarloaf Rd on the 2500-acre family farm, 40 minutes from Pongaroa. Abbey is a highly valued, respected and admired woman by all and the entire Pongaroa community thanks her for all her hard work.

Greytown Rugby Club

Jenna Telford does a tremendous amount of work for the club including ordering and helping to prepare the food for the aftermatch functions and the time consuming job of ordering and stocking the drinks for the bar alongside other tasks needed to be done ahead of game day. On Saturdays Jenna arrives early to set up the club rooms and she is then there all day cooking and clearing up and will always leave the place clean and tidy for the next event, even if this means coming in during the week to finish off. Kylie Evans takes photos of all the senior games and some of the JAB games. She process and compiles these photos and puts them on the club Facebook page along with posting events and articles that are relevant to club members. As one can imagine this role takes a considerable amount of time. Both have been important drivers of JAB rugby in Greytown for many years.

Marist Rugby Club

Michelle Beaver is more often than not found at the Marist Rugby Club, known as Aunty,

Nanny, Mum and Nanny Meesh. Michelle has been involved with Marist for over 40 years with her parents introducing her to her current roles being Life Member, Manager, President, committee member, running the kitchen and anything else she can do. Michelle was a JAB coach, JAB club rep also Wairarapa-Bush JAB rep coach and was manager for the prems team for eight years and is currently manager for the 3rds. I think that Michelle has green blood running through her veins and eats and sleeps rugby, from her beloved Marist, Hurricanes, All Blacks and Sevens. Michelle has grandsons and granddaughters playing rugby so there is no stopping for a long time yet. We love you here at Marist - thanks for all you do.

Carterton Rugby Club

Paula Namana has been the mainstay of all things food in the Carterton Rugby Club for several years. She organises the kitchen as well as the successful food hut and then the teams of people to do the mahi. Family is first and foremost for Paula and she has her parents, in-laws, sons and daughters helping in her team supplying the food for Carterton on game day. The standard response is to thank the ladies in the kitchen for the food we thank Paula and her team.

Gladstone Rugby Football Club

“Gladstone Rugby Football Club acknowledges the contribution and enthusiasm of Cath Thompson and Sharon Parker. Cath is a committee member for the Club and the representative on the Gladstone Complex committee. She can be seen every game day on the side-line looking after player welfare by way of strapping and providing first aid assistance to our Premier players when required. This is an important role within our Club. Sharon is a committee member and looks after the Clubs finances in a very professional manner. You will also find Sharon at the gate of every home game extracting a gold coin contribution from the spectators. We congratulate Sharon on her new appointment as Board member for the Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union. You will also see both ladies working diligently behind the bar after home games providing an excellent level of service. Both ladies contribute in a very integral way to the success of our Club.”

Shelley Mason OWNER

Party time with a lending hand Shelley Mason and her husband Greg bit the bullet two years ago and purchased Festival Hire from long-time operators, Jan and Steve Hinton. Shelley has experience in event and project management and hubby Greg was keen for a new challenge. Festival Hire was up for sale, she and Greg were tempted. She says it’s an exciting and rewarding business but they have been on a very steep learning curve as they come to grips with the industry in New Zealand. “It’s been real seat-of-the-pants stuff,” she laughs. To add to the learning, they have a two-and-a-half year son Dylan and 10-month-old Abigail. “I was pregnant the first year and life is very, very busy.”

planning events, especially weddings. “A bride and groom can come in looking totally overwhelmed and we are able to sit them down and go through a check list, prompting them to consider things that may have not occurred to them.” That also goes for corporate events, funerals, 21sts, and specialist parties, like children’s themed slumber events. Festival Hire is a member of the Hire Industry Association of New Zealand (HIANZ) – one of only two in Wairarapa, and it gives them access to a huge range of equipment hire, options and support. The retail of the store is on Shelley’s radar. Watch that space.

However, they are not alone as they are supported by a great team, including Rachel Burgess, hire and sales manager; Milissa Wilkinson, seasonal equipment supervisor, and Katrina Watkins, the shop floor assistant. Family step in for childcare and when they are seen working late, business neighbours at the Queen Street site are keen to see they are managing. Gleaning on her event management background, including as a wedding planner, Shelley is keen to develop a service assisting people when they are

Cate Tyrer MANAGER

Offering an alternate elective surgical base in Wairarapa’s health service Cate Tyrer has been the manager of Selina Sutherland Private Hospital in Masterton for the past five years. She is excited about the prospect of extending and diversifying health services. She brings to the role, 37 years of nursing and hospital management experience both in the UK and New Zealand. Moving to Wairarapa 10 years ago. In 2009, just three years after the new Wairarapa Hospital was built, Cate was appointed the Executive Director of Quality Safety and Risk. She enjoys hospital management and this role was about investigating adverse events, learning from any mistakes, and aiming to provide a quality service to patients. When the manager’s position for Selina Sutherland arose, Cate found it an easy transition. “The role was needing a more business base, to ensure Selina Sutherland remained

sustainable, and to continue working closely with the Wairarapa DHB.” She describes the relationship of the two hospitals, as totally symbiotic. “Selina Sutherland attracts quality specialists and surgeons to our region and they come because of the opportunity to work in both private and public hospitals.” There are nine specialists available on the hospital service list, with growth and diversification planned as part of the threeyear strategic plan. Building diversity is the challenge she sees in her role. “We need to create and support as many health services as possible, right here in Wairarapa,” she says. “Keeping it local, keeps it safe.”

There’s a range of clinics too from vascular surgery to the ‘snip clinic’ and mole mapping. The private hospital has 10 inpatient beds, a staff of 12 registered nurses supported by an admin team of three. Selina Sutherland Hospital, named after the tenacious Scotswoman who raised money to build the first hospital in Masterton in 1879, was established in 1995 by a group of doctors who saw the need for private medical services within Wairarapa. The hospital is run as a not-for-profit charitable trust, governed by a local Board of Directors.

Selina Sutherland Hospital had stepped back from general surgery in recent years, because there wasn’t the demand, but this is changing with the ageing demographic. Along with revisiting the need for general

Loco Coffee & Books

Tick2Dig

Jocelyn Jackson CO-OWNER

Digging in the right place Kate Mead OWNER

Coffee and bookshop a haven in the Village Loco Coffee & Books is one of six bookshops in Featherston, New Zealand’s Booktown. The business is run by Kate Mead, who was the first Director of Booktown events, 2015 - 2017. Loco’s coffee is supplied by Havana, Wellington, pastries by Martin, The Baker in Featherston, ice cream by Rush Munro’s and chocolate by OCHO of Dunedin. Kate’s ambition was to create a haven in the village, for locals and visitors to meet and spend time together or individually, reading, answering the 5-minute quiz, working (there’s free wifi), catching up with local events and international news, browsing and buying books while refilling the tank with a smooth coffee and a tasty morsel. Paintings on the walls are by Megan Campbell. Music is on the jazzy side. Books are everywhere - on shelves, tables, the floor. Those on shelves have been valued and priced. Often not so, if you see them stacked in dark corners.

Customers range from local families (there’s a toy box and board games) to book-collecting visitors from New Zealand and overseas. Conversations can be held between body artists, local politicians, transgender friends and local farmers. Integration and friendship are free with every book and cup. Often there are free fruit and vegetables, grown and brought in by customers, for others to take home. If you pass Loco of an evening you might hear live music from within as Kate plays cello with The Pageturners (Jo Bath, Rupert Watson, Geoff Wooles).

Loco is the place to stop for lush Havana Coffee to go OR stay and sup with us & browse the shelves of books for a special gem to take home with you. OPEN 7 DAYS 50C Fitzherbert St, Featherston

Jocelyn Jackson comes from a varied, practical background of business management, including running a beef and sheep farm in Waikato, also working as receptionist/administrator for an Engineering Company close by. On return to her home town of Masterton, she met Peter, where together they formed the Electrical Contracting business ‘PJ Electrical’. “We quickly realised there was great difficulty finding people who could locate underground cables for us so we decided to incorporate this service into our own business”. The pair became aware of just how poorly serviced Wairarapa was with regard to the underground locating of all services. Locate before you excavate was the message they wanted to get out. “We could see it would be unviable for a number of contractors to invest and compete with the necessary locating

equipment but perhaps viable if one company independently provides the service”. So, this is when Peter and Jocelyn formed the company ‘Tick2dig Sub Surface Locaters’, providing other contractors with their services, using a variety of instruments including Ground Penetrating Radar, Water Leak Detection, Concrete scanning, Cable Fault Locating, to name a few, and more recently a Vacuum Excavator used for ‘pot holing.’ “Using Ground Penetrating Radar or our Concrete Scanner, we can produce 3D images of the scanned area, showing such things as graves, or reinforcing steel. We don’t repair, we locate, and give our customers confidence that their excavation will not present them with any surprises, essentially we give them the Tick2dig”

An interview with Cathy Davys

Hair Artist and Educator, by Allanah Avalon

Endorsement – Christmas 2017 Dear Cathy, Her is a little something to “shower” you in rose petals of gratitude – for all your care, empathy, wisdom and gentle guidance. You are gifted at making women feel both beautiful and empowered as they move through all the stages and circumstances of their lives. I am so grateful that we have reconnected, and that you are helping me move, with ease, poise and grace into my “crowning glory” years with juicy elegance. May your Christmas be blessed and see you (to continue the journey) in the Rapa in 2018. Warm Aroha, Stephanie

When approached to take part in the editorial for Woman in Business I first thought, what a great opportunity to discuss my new business, Cathy Davys Bespoke Hair at the 540 Salon, Upper Plain Road. But, as I began to write I started to reflect on the journey that has bought me to this business – and it would be unfair for me to discuss my career and business without discussing the foundation of my career. Where I am in my career is not because of luck, it is because of the choices I have made, the mentors I have chosen and the work ethic I have prescribed to myself (plus my passion to assist women in looking and being the best versions of themselves). My first job, however, was nothing alike to what I do today, and although my first job I did not enjoy, it did teach me an invaluable lesson about finding a career that not only has value to myself, but also others.

The lesson here is that if you don’t see an advert for your chosen job, you need to make yourself visible. Make sure the right person receives your resume, follow up with a phone call, follow up by attending your chosen workplace, let prospective employers know you’re interested! Visualize what you want, and if you receive a NO, this only means Next Opportunity.

I worked in Law Firm by the name of Wollermans. Much of my job was mundane administrative tasks that allowed me a lot of time to consider what else the world held. On one what particular sunny autumn day, I was sent to post letters. Walking back from the post office, it dawned on me in one of those frightful manners where you think the entire world is about to end that there has got to be more to life than sitting at a desk.

This type of job application does not only apply to the Hairdressing Industry. When you apply for a job via an online portal, your resume and profile is often dissected using a series of careful constructed algorithms that a company has curated to find the ‘right’ person. One wrong answer or click, might just be read by an algorithm as the ‘wrong’ candidate. You need to think creatively about how you’re going to get a company to notice and then hire you. How are you going to get a company to remember you?

The following day and with a new, and somewhat frightening perspective on life on what adventures could be had, during my lunch hour, I approached a Carterton Salon and asked if they had any apprenticeships. I was told by an elderly woman, who had a perm that would now no longer be considered fashionable, that I must approach the salon Fantasia and ask to see Mrs Myers. In my Hillman IMP I zoomed up to Fantasia (Note! Without even calling prior) and asked to see Mrs Myers. Mrs Myers on her introduction noted she was not hiring, though, she would be happy to ‘chat.’ The chat, it lasted two hours. The next week, I was offered an apprenticeship. I went from earning $100.00 per week to earning $28.00 per week with Mrs. Myers at Fantasia and it didn’t bother me. I found I was happier, had the enthusiasm to go to work and the energy to push myself to the next level each day. Those days, turned into months, into years and now decades; now, here I am, still pushing for the next best version of myself. Fantasia during the 70’s was Masterton’s largest salon, yet the owner Mrs Myers was not a hairdresser. Mrs. Myers was though,

an A+ level business woman who only ran the salon, but in only running the salon, she was able to train a team of hairdressers in business, while ensured too that her hairdressers had the best trainers and mentors imaginable. One of my mentors Marilyn Paku was both my trainer and model for the Hair Dressing World Cup. The two of us worked late nights together perfecting my skill(s). She shared with me her knowledge on the industry and taught me the kind of secrets on hair that one can only learn from working in hairdressing for a lifetime. I was fortunate enough to learn secrets of the trade without even having been in the trade for a hot second.

Eventually, under the guidance of Mrs. Myers and Paku, I went onto compete for New Zealand in the 1982 Hair Dressing World Cup. I would not have got to this competition, if it were not for thousands of hours of practise night after late night on the salon floor. I think it is important to note here that my school grades were never impressive and teachers would often say to my parents, “Cathy could do so much better if she applied herself.” My hairdressing marks on the contrary, were in the top 10% at my Polytechnic. When you find your passion. You find Yourself.

When you do land the dream job, work it with passion. There are no dumb questions, ask them all, come to understand where you are working inside out. In the process, also find a mentor within your workplace, someone who inspires you and investigate how they’re going what they’re doing. This is the compact version of what I did for the first six years of my career, before I began to share all that I had already learnt. Now, after owning salons in Wellington and travelling the world with hairdressing, I am back in my home province, educating salon teams from around New Zealand, teaching and creating hairstyles on clients that make individuals feel stronger and stand a little taller, while also showing the next generation of hairdresser how they can have the same fruitful experience(s) as I have had in this industry. Kala Dudson

Tackling a male dominated industry Kala Dudson freely admits she has a love of people and certainly gets to see a lot of them, owning Caltex Chapel Street and Caltex Solway with her husband Kevan. She is one of four women within Caltex in the lower half of the North Island who are service station owners. Initially operating a service station was a very male dominated industry but over the past eight or so years women are becoming more involved. I do love the people side of the stations – working with staff to help make our customers short visit a bit more special. Offering a clean shop, amazing food, great conversation and service. Kala is originally from Whanganui and met her husband Kevan from Carterton when they were at Chanel College. After starting a family in Masterton, moving to Wellington for a short stint they decided to return to Masterton to purchase what was their first service station Caltex Chapel in 2005. Two years later they together expanded into a second site, Caltex Solway. Kala’s sister Alaina and Sunny her father are in the oil industry also and it was through them that the idea initially came about. I had four days training with my sister and then the rest was by phone. Crazy really when I look back at my first three months. Most of it was

spent learning the back office systems and compliance related aspects to the industry. We went through a shop upgrade and had new fuel tanks installed – although it was full on it worked out well. The best and the hardest part about being self-employed is staff. They are amazing, fun, different, mature, young and the most valuable part of any business. Over the years I have worked with the most wonderful people of all ages, lots of whom have moved on to follow their dreams, start careers and even semi retire. Working with Caltex and now Z Energy who own the Caltex Brand has been a learning journey and it has been made easier having my husband working with me. His work experience has taught me a lot. We complement each other and do things very differently, but always have the same outcomes in mind. Since we have been in business there are two groups of people I would love to thank. Our staff both past and present for the memories and the journey we have travelled and finally to all our customers who have visited our sites. We have had some challenges over the years and I accept this is a part of being in business but without your loyalty and support we would not be what we are today – Thank you very much.

Guthrie Bowron

Beauty Within Boutique @ The Hubb Masterton

Judy-Anne Smith

Windows with flair and colour to enrich When we met up with Judy-Anne Smith at Guthrie Bowron in Masterton, she was admiring a curtain fabric she considered would photograph well. “Isn’t it beautiful the way it catches the light,” she enthuses running her hand over the textured material. Her love and knowledge of fabrics is legendary and she’s been known to have clients who confidently say to her, “you pick”, when it comes to furnishing their office or home. Guthrie Bowron is the only nationwide store in the country which focuses entirely on home decorating. In Masterton, the store focuses on paint; wallpaper and curtain fabric – either singularly, or all together. The company has been around in New Zealand since 1896 and each store is locally owned. In Masterton, Warren Grantham has been the owner/manager for almost 50 years. The Axminster red and gold carpet in his office proves it! Judy-Anne’s sales sit constantly in the top echelon of the Guthrie Bowron group. Judy-Anne grew up in Wairarapa and when raising a family moved to Noosa in Australia. She has two daughters and a son. Judy-Anne has purchased a house with partner John in Cashmere Oaks north of Masterton and has enjoyed adding her

personal taste to their home. In Australia, she sold real estate and it gave her the opportunity to see first-hand how people decorated their homes. Returning to Wairarapa a few years ago, she noticed many people considering moving were choosing to upgrade instead. This is when her expertise shines. It’s a free decoration consultancy service, and she will work with the clients to marry wall treatments and curtains. “People are quite reserved in the store but when I visit them in their homes, it’s a more relaxed atmosphere and we can create magic.” Trends in home decorating are forever changing and currently Judy-Anne is finding floating sheer curtaining with lining is popular; plain colours are also preferred on the walls with colour added by art and ornaments. Because Guthrie Bowron is nationwide with 46 stores, it has huge buying power and so regular deals are offered. There is ‘every day free-make’ with around 50 fabric samples in store. There’s also a variety of designer curtain headings which are included with the free making promotion. Call in and see Judy-Anne, she may just be eyeing up the next fabric for you.

Joelle Moke BEAUTY THERAPIST

The skin says it all Joelle Moke - beauty therapist – is another example of the extremely qualified people which Wairarapa is attracting. A graduate of the Wellington School of Beauty Therapy, she has worked as a therapist for 17 years in both New Zealand and Australia. Joelle says she enjoyed her 8 years in Brisbane and developing her trade in salons which emphasise results driven skincare, something she is passionate about. “Great skincare is essential in achieving healthy skin.” The pull back to New Zealand, to be nearer her family, was encouraged by her brother Ryan Monastra, who is the director of Back in Action, and co-director of The Hubb Health Club in Masterton. She works alongside Ryan and other wellness professionals in a collaborative space at The Hubb on King Street.

All treatments use the very best skincare ranges that Joelle has personally researched and tested for efficacy.

Her room is fresh in black and white and in the corner sits an interesting machine – The Observ ‘Skin Diagnostic Tool’ which is the only one of its kind in Masterton. It provides a visual representation of skin health taking into account different layers of the skin, not visible to the naked eye.

“Our clients feel welcomed, well looked after and see results from their treatments. At the end of the day, someone caring about them and their needs can make the world of difference to how they are feeling.”

Gain Momentum Linda Penlington OWNER

‘Team human’ in health advocacy It’s a circuitous route that Linda Penlington has taken to get to where she is today, championing public health. From her Carterton base in Park Road, she juggles several public health roles which she is increasingly passionate about. It’s a far cry from the jet-setting international banking job which took her to work in London, New York and Tokyo. It was personal experiences that hurled her off in another direction. The death of her first child at just three days old and the subsequent birth of identical twins, prompted her to re-evaluate life. Now settled in Carterton with her 15-year-old daughters, Charlotte and Lily, she chairs the consumer council of the Wairarapa District Health Board; is on the Health Quality and Safety Commission, and is the Wairarapa representative for the organisation, Sands (the volunteer support network for bereaved parents). She also runs her own company ‘Gain Momentum Ltd’, the teaching of Pilates, promoting health and fitness, and running a 1:1 rehabilitation service. With regard to the Health Quality and Safety Commission role as the Consumer representative since 2007, she quickly declares she’s not a clinician but the ‘team human’ part of the forum which focuses on getting medical services fitting to a person’s

individual needs. Linda says she attempts to be the voice of the people. “There is a recognised need from health authorities for citizens to have more of a say in their medical care, be it the timing of services, the knowledge of what’s available, or simply the appreciation of the communication abilities of individuals.” “It’s all about product and service, managed with good governance but always remembering we are dealing with people who have fears and expectations.” Linda’s involvement with Sands is voluntary. It began in London in 1999 with the death of her daughter, Georgia, in what was then known as a ‘cot death’ – now Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. She was so impressed and inspired with the support she and her husband received through that dark time, that once in New Zealand, she got involved in the Sands organisation here. It’s a network of parentrun, not-for-profit groups supporting families. A branch was established in Wairarapa in 2007 with Linda as the representative. Whenever people lose a baby, the call comes out “have you seen Linda?” It is not professional counselling that’s offered but empathy and understanding, a listening ear coupled with practical advice.

G.J. Gardner Homes

Maid2Clean

Casey Minty Victoria Bamford and Pip Mackie ADMIN AND SALES

G.J. Gardner Homes Wairarapa “We absolutely love what we do and the people we get to work with”, say Pip Mackie (Sales) and Victoria Bamford (Admin Support) who joined the G.J. Gardner Homes (GJ’s) Wairarapa team in 2017 and 2018 respectively. This dynamic duo thrive in a highlycustomer focused business where they leverage the buying power and design depth of the GJ’s nationwide home build company to deliver design and build solutions tailored to meet their client’s exacting needs and budgets - “No two client’s needs, wants or build sites, are quite the same”. Pip has the skills and design programmes in place to customise plans or develop a totally unique solution from a client’s rough sketch. Having built with GJ’s four years ago on a Greytown lifestyle block, Pip knows the enormous benefit of the GJ’s process. The contract she and husband (and fellow GJ’s sales person), Nolan Mackie signed, while they still lived in Auckland, was fixed price where everything was accounted for and defined up front, meaning no unexpected cost escalations along the way. “It truly is a team that works together to do what we say we will.” It’s this team work and collaborative approach that Victoria really values. She supports Pip in the specification process, facilitating the selection of all interior and exterior materials, colours and products

culminating in the production of the build contract. Designs and specifications are created with the input of qualified builders within the Wairarapa GJ Gardner team. Being local and supporting local businesses, and quality trades people is a key goal of the 30 New Zealand GJ franchises. GJ’s is an equal opportunity business with women in a broad range of roles from Construction Supervising, Estimating, Build Site Supervision, Accounting and many more including Franchise Owners (we have six women leaders). Pip and Victoria are delighted to see young women in the trades they use from foundation laying to electrical and encourage women to consider trades as an excellent career path. Aligning themselves with a brand they can be proud of was critical to both Pip and Victoria when choosing where to work. GJ’s has built their reputation on the principle of building homes designed to meet individual customer’s needs with uncompromised quality and value. Today GJ’s NZ has built over 16,000 homes since commencing in 1997. GJ’s continue to build a reputation for reliability and for being an organisation that our customers and suppliers can trust. Pip and Victoria live by the GJ’s vision: To have every customer recommend us to their closest friend.

The cleaning professionals Casey Minty and her team of cleaners are like unseen angels, performing their magic by creating order and cleanliness in people’s homes and businesses throughout Wairarapa. From her base at the end of her kitchen table in Masterton, with one year Kaea, playing happily close by, Casey runs the owner/operator business which she registered in January 2018 and began trading in August. She has seven cleaners on her rosters. “I just love creating businesses. The only limit is your imagination.” She proudly points out they use ecofriendly products and are a family-friendly flexible business where the cleaners are paid above the living wage. “Cleaning can be hard work and I want my workers to feel proud and valued about the service they provide. It makes clients feel so good to walk into clean and tidy premises and frees up their time to be with their families. It’s important work.” Maid2Clean offers a wide range of services from regular domestic cleaning;

home organisation and de-cluttering; end of lease cleans; selling a property cleans; exterior house cleaning; Air BnB servicing; carpet cleaning; new build cleaning and commercial cleaning. It’s all on the Maid2Clean website which has a simple on-line booking form for requesting the type of service. And, if that isn’t enough, the company also offers a re-furbish of baby prams and equipment – for people to either use again, or to sell. Much of her ideas glean from experience in Australia. She had grown up in Whangarei and had moved around the North Island with her family, as they followed their father’s career. Casey headed across the Tasman at 19. Her steely determination to succeed had her working as a nanny for seven years in high profile roles. She met husband-to-be, Jake, they married back in New Zealand at Gladstone. “Jake has been wonderful support and a motivating force behind all my ideas. You can do it my darling,” is his motivating catch cry.

Totally love my new ombré brows - a new style and shape using an awesome new technique. I love how Rebecca keeps up with international trends, I have total confidence in her skill and quality as a technician. I would not choose anyone else.

I am absolutely thrilled with my brows. They are completely transformed. They are so beautiful, sexy even. Coming to Rebecca was so much less painful than my past experience. The difference between quality and non-quality service is remarkable!

Rebecca Fisher is such an incredibly talented woman. I discovered her skills a few months ago when I got eyebrow tattoos. Having had minimal brows that I could do nothing with, I am now super happy to have defined beautiful brows that are low maintenance and always looking amazing.

Brows After chemo my eyebrows never really grew back the same, getting my brows done by Rebecca has helped me to feel much more confident around people again.

Scalp The Scalp Micropigmentation procedure is special for most of us who experience the ordeal of hair loss. Rebecca is outstanding; as my procedures progressed she went ‘above and beyond’ what I could have imagined as being in the realms of possibility.

Brows Lovely Rebecca has given me my eyebrows back! I did approach this with trepidation but was pleasantly surprised, what a lovely calm clinic in beautiful surroundings, a perfect way to relax. Rebecca puts you at ease and is very thorough and professional, choosing the correct colour and designing the right shape is done with care, the final choice is yours so you are included in the process. ADMINISTRATORS

The world of pedal power

The MEGA admin team Mitre 10 has been around Wairarapa for a long time and it was in 2011, that the Mitre 10 MEGA Masterton opened its doors in Ngaumutawa Road. It’s hard to miss the bright orange and black store which champions itself as a one-stopshop for all your home and building needs. While there’s many staff on the shop floor to help customers, there’s also a team upstairs making sure the store runs smoothly – the admin team – consisting of Julane Etherington, Cherie Butler and Selina Palenski. Maria Majboroda is the financial controller and was profiled in the 2018 Women in Business. Julane Etherington, or ‘Camp Mother’, has been with Mitre 10 since 1986. She was the ‘office lady’ upstairs in the Queen Street store mainly responsible for accounts. Mitre 10 staff are well known for their willingness to roll up their sleeves and get into anything needed doing. And that’s what Julane did for many years. Upstairs and downstairs, she was always around. These days she’s the admin manager in an office overlooking the shop floor.

jumped at the chance of the job. Selina is the newbie, working for five months for Mitre 10 doing the accounts receivable. All admit, the titles are somewhat indicative however “we all do a bit of everything really”. Originally from Martinborough, Selina has two daughters and proudly points out, six grandchildren. The Mitre 10 MEGA store has 88 staff running 18 departments. A quick tally by Julane, reveals about 45 per cent are women. The store is one of the largest employers in the region. Directors are Rex Slight and son-in-law Ejvind Frederiksen. Julane, Cherie and Selina enthuse about the working conditions. “Employment here is extremely fair, very proactive and kind,” sums up Julane. Cherie agrees, “We spend so much time together at work that it is like one big family.

Alongside Julane in these offices are Cherie Butler who does accounts payable. She’s been with Mitre 10 for five years, initially filling in for someone on maternity leave. When they didn’t return, Cherie

CO-OWNER

Accounting and figures is Deb Allen’s forte. These skills, and her experience, have come in handy when she and Andy Curtis-Cody decided to co-own the Avantiplus store in Masterton from November last year. Avantiplus is New Zealand’s largest cycle retailer. Deb has been around the cycle business since 2012 when she bought into the business after Brian Lambert sold his store and the new building was erected on Chapel Street. Although bookwork is her key role, she also gets involved in sales and works on the shop floor. She says she meets good people and especially loves the ‘secret squirrel’ aspect of parents buying their children bikes. “The kids come in and spy a bike. The parents quietly say they’ll be back and then she gets visits from excited children who got their bike from ‘clever’ Father Christmas!” Thank you notes from happy repeat customers dot her noticeboard in her office. Deb and Andy are joined in the business by two mechanics, Michael Toohey and Liam Moore. Together they make up a mean team encouraging cycling in Wairarapa. They run maintenance classes, provide education about bike safety and offer a six- and 12week free services post bike purchase. Electric bikes are the intriguing introduction to the bicycle industry. Deb says “they simply make the hard bits, easy”. They are being snapped up by a wide variety of people, including those who have hip and

knee surgery along with other medical conditions and older people who love the joy and freedom of bicycle travel. With their reliable centre motor systems, these bikes can travel up to 120km before needing to be re-charged. While raising three energetic sons, Deb worked for many Wairarapa businesses handling their accounts and office admin, including for her husband, John, at Allen’s Vehicle Repairs. Experiences gained working in local goahead businesses gave Deb the confidence to become a business owner herself. There’s been Kings Woodworking Company; Francetemp; Lambert’s Cycles; and earlier Curry, Nicol and Orange – an accountancy firm, and that job involved coding for a computer which filled the room. “Clients came in with their cardboard box of paperwork for us to sort. We were not allowed to wear trousers and on Melbourne Cup day, we had to get permission from our parents to bet, because Mr Curry believed it was not ladylike to gamble.” Office admin has come a long way and Deb wears trousers these days around the cycle shop. “It’s easier to swing a leg over and show people how the bicycle rides,” she laughs.

Kay Leather

DIRECTOR OF STARLORE LTD, THAT TRADES AS STONEHENGE AOTEAROA

Shortest day of the year Winter Solstice treat Kay Leather is passionate about the dark, clear Wairarapa sky and is adamant that there must be laws introduced to protect these skies from the light pollution which comes from human population. She is part of a team which created Stonehenge Aotearoa – this Wairarapa jewel which teaches people astronomy on both a practical and magical level. The henge is a southern hemisphere adaptation to what ancients created on the Salisbury Plain in England over 5000 year ago. Kay met Richard Hall when working at the Carter Observatory in Wellington and the pair have taken the learning of the heavens and stars from knowledgeable elders and placed it beside star lore. They then responded to a call from the Observatory to find a dark sky corridor from where we could learn about the heavens of the southern hemisphere. The New Zealand night sky survey pinpointed two corridors of extremely dark sky, at Black Birch mountain in Marlborough and a corridor which runs from Martinborough northwards and extends through the Stonehenge Aotearoa site.

A plateau of land outstretched over the Wairarapa valley at Ahiaruhe, east of Carterton was ideal and discovered by Richard – an astronomer, who purchased the land. With the aid of a government grant, administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand, Stonehenge Aotearoa was built with voluntary labour. It has become the home of The Phoenix Astronomical Society, which Richard founded, and it has erected buildings on the site. Kay is a former teacher from Auckland whose interest in things astrological led her to becoming the Education Officer at the observatory. She has honed a particular interest in Maori astronomy and was fascinated by the lectures – ‘The Myths and Legends of the Night Sky’. She went on to create a full course of study, Tatai Arorangi. It has also been at Stonehenge Aotearoa where Kay and Richard’s skills and enthusiasm have shone.

Lansdowne Private Child Care and Pre School

Jolly Good Shoe Repairs

Toni Devenny

Home away from home for little ones

OWNER

Creating a nurturing and loving space where children can play unhurried and learn at their own personal developmental stage, is the primary focus for Toni Devenny and her team at Lansdowne Private Childcare. Toni opened the centre 26 years ago and this belief in keeping things homely and relaxed is what she proudly now calls her ‘point of difference’ in the burgeoning childcare industry. Her centre is registered for 57 children and there’s a waiting list. She’s seen a huge change over the years in the clientele who seek childcare. “In the early days, working parents were part-time and we also accommodated rural families, who may come into town for a day and need their children minded. Now, it’s predominately all working parents and some children are here for long days. That’s why we want to make it as much like home as possible.” Toni has achieved that feeling of home. Coming up the path to the front porch, it’s pretty much like any bungalow in Masterton, except for the safety fencing, and once inside the sight and sound of several little bodies, all tucked up for rest time and listening to lullabies, is glorious. The centre is split into two ages across two houses. Up to two-and-a-half and from

COBBLER

two-and-a-half until they leave for school. In the nursery, it’s more about nurturing and routine but for the older children, their focus is about growing, learning and preparing for the school years.

“What do you do?” is a question Janette gets asked regularly. Some may think she is there to make the coffee and answer the counter, when in fact she is one of the cobblers at Jolly Good Shoe Repairs.

Lansdowne Childcare has 15 staff. All hold early childhood qualifications. Some have been at the Centre for many years. Toni says the older staff bring to their jobs the personal understanding of family dynamics, having raised families of their own. The younger staff members bring a youthful vitality which the children also love. Toni also likes the generational aspect she is now experiencing, caring for the children of children who initially were at the centre. Two of Toni’s grandchildren are on the roll.

Most of her time is spent in front of her trusty hand-powered, heavy duty sewing machine. She’ll re-stitch your work boots or reline the worn out inner heels of your running shoes. She’ll replace stretched elastics; replace lost or broken buckles and buttons; reattach the strap on your handbag and replace those pesky bits of Velcro that have lost their stick ability. She’ll replace the zip on your horse riding boot or repair tears in your favourite suitcase. Many and varied are the tasks.

Back in 1991, Toni’s youngest son was off to school. A trained nurse, she mulled over what to do. Offering quality childcare in Masterton seemed the obvious thing to do. “There was a resounding need at the time.” The stucco bungalow on the corner of First and Totara streets was purchased and as the centre out-grew this house and grounds, the home next door was also purchased. There is now a pleasant flow between the two buildings as the children make their way about the myriad of activities.

Offering High Quality Care and Education in a Nurturing Environment • We have a specialised nursery for babies and toddlers. • Our Pre School Centre focuses on preparing children to become lifelong learners. • 20 Hours ECE Subsidy for all 3 and 4 year old children. • Spacious indoor/outdoor play areas.

VISION STATEMENT ‘To nurture and support our children to grow and learn through their preschool years at an unhurried pace’ Full time, part time or casual vacancies – 0 to 5 years. Registered qualified and experienced teachers. Inspection welcome.

Janette especially loves to modify shoes and slippers for those with foot problems. Maybe the straps needs lengthening to accommodate swollen ankles or replacing the laces with Velcro for those who are unable to tie them anymore. Dennis, her husband, is the other cobbler and he spends his time on the noisy machines. Replacing worn out soles and heels, even rebuilding them entirely if needed. Before you throw out your favourite, comfortable shoes or boots bring them in for a free quote and a chat. Jolly Good Shoe Repairs are the only

shoe and bag repairers in Wairarapa. They are situated on the corner of Dixon and Church Streets in Masterton. Opening hours weekdays 8.30am - 5.30pm. Both Janette and Dennis enjoy a challenge from their customers. They only use the best quality leather and rubber for their repairs and are happy to guarantee the quality of their workmanship. They pride themselves on their prompt service, generally ready for your collection within a week. There’s also a huge range of quality shoe care products including shoe polishes; insoles; laces; paints; dyes and all manner of leather care items. They also sell a selection of top quality Italian made footwear. The Grisport and Andrew brands cater for the casual walker right through to heavy duty hiking. It also includes safety work boots and those suitable for farmers. Key cutting, sharpening knives, engraving pet tags and stretching shoes are also part of their service. Janette and Dennis are a happy team, complimenting each other’s expertise to provide a comprehensive service. Archer McHattie Ltd

LJ Hooker, Carterton Realty Limited

Rachel Archer PROPERTY INSPECTOR

The practical art of property inspection Wairarapa Property management company Archer McHattie has grown from managing 40 properties, to hundreds in just three years. The responsibility for making sure all is well with the properties and their tenants rests on the shoulders of Rachel Archer. Rachel joined Archer McHattie two years ago after a career in retail in Masterton. As the business’ dedicated property inspector, she visits all the properties once every three months. As well as inspecting the physical condition of the properties, the visits are often an opportunity to catch up with the tenants and find out if they have any issues or concerns. Rachel has a good rapport with tenants as well as landlords, says her father Keith Archer, one half of Archer McHattie, the other half being David and Ali McHattie, of LJ Hooker McHattie Realty.

She also produces a written report for landlords to present to their insurance companies. There are a lot of reasons landlords are using Archer McHattie to manage their property. “Doing it yourself is a false economy when you can have everything done for you for minimal cost,” says Rachel. “It’s much better for landlords to not be personally dealing with their tenants as this works out better for both parties.” Archer McHattie also takes the burden of compliance regulations off landlords and is able to give landlords accurate advice on appropriate rents that reflect the current state of the local rental market. Outside of work, Rachel spends time with her young family and this year has got back into competitive hockey for the first time since school.

Sylvia Wildermoth & Kylie Baron

Carterton - a place to call home Sylvia Wildermoth has lived in the Carterton district all her life and now resides on a lifestyle block just out of town with her husband Jim. Kylie Baron has also been in the district most of her life and is living with her family on a dairy farm on the outskirts of town. Sylvia and Kylie are two firm believers that Carterton is a place to call home. Both Sylvia and Kylie love the Carterton community and enjoy meeting and interacting with locals, visitors and potential new residents in their roles as Real Estate Marketing Specialists. Sylvia, who is the Director of LJ Hooker Carterton has worked in the Real Estate industry for the past 30 years, all this time with the same Company.

“She is everything you could want in a property inspector. She is a landlord herself so knows what to look for.” Where repair and maintenance work is required, Rachel has access to contractors she knows will do a quality job at a reasonable rate.

She has been ranked in the top 5 percent of Real Estate Agents for the LJ Hooker Group nationwide and has received many awards for both sales and service over the years.

Kylie’s insight combined with her extensive knowledge of the Real Estate industry are an asset to her and a huge bonus in helping people achieve their dreams. Together they make an invaluable team. Both Sylvia and Kylie are great at understanding people’s needs, they have excellent negotiating skills and focus on achieving a win-win outcome for both the vendor and purchaser – allowing all parties to comfortably move on to the next step in their Real Estate journey. Sylvia and Kylie work as a team to market and sell properties and are assisted by Beula and Renee as Business Administrators. Kadia Merralls OWNER

Reflections on life at Lansdowne House “People call me a perfectionist...amongst other things!” laughs Kadia Merralls, owner of the prestigious Lansdowne House in Masterton, but one thing is certain, Lansdowne House is here to stay and it grows in popularity every year.” Built in the 1920s, the impressive Tudor, three-storey mansion has been an event venue for 50 years, the past 16 with Kadia, and until recently, her late husband Richard, at the helm. Recently Kadia hosted a 90th birthday party for Norma Simmonds. Reminiscing with Norma she noted that Norma had also celebrated her 80th and 70th birthdays at Lansdowne House and her daughter had got married there. A week earlier Kadia hosted a 40th birthday lunch for Hamish Lindsay now living in the UK. Hamish and wife Sophie were married at Lansdowne House in January 2012. “It was such a thrill to see them back here to celebrate his birthday,” says Kadia. Another recent milestone event was the Bannister Centennial reunion dinner, part of a weekend celebration at ‘Westmere’, the original homestead. Guests came from the UK, Australia and around New Zealand. The dinner created a wonderful chance to dress up, swap stories and

participate in a special slice of Masterton history. Together with some fabulous weddings this season, Kadia and her team feel justifiably proud of the part they play in creating special events in a unique and magical atmosphere, with the added bonus of fabulous traditional food and friendly supportive staff. When asked what is the most important part of what she does Kadia answers unequivocally “creating happy memories!” Having lost her beloved Richard last June, after many years of ill health, she knows first-hand how important it is to celebrate happy occasions with family and friends. “Life is often cut short and things can change in the blink of an eye. Make the most of every day; enjoy family and friends; organise gatherings at every opportunity, and be generous with hugs!” Kadia’s advice to all. She invites you to view their Facebook and website www.lansdownehouse.co.nz phone 06 378 2097 or email lansdownehouse@xtra.co.nz.

Sophie McCoy and Julie Tulloch OWNERS

A cacophony of colour Stepping in the door of ‘The Whole Nine Yards’ homeware store on Chapel Street in Masterton is like entering Aladdin’s Cave ... it’s not only gold on display but all manner of things for the home. This includes curtains, furniture and home accessories, and when you think you’ve seen everything, there’s a rack of beautiful clothes by New Zealand designer Donelle Scott, who creates the ‘Lace’ brand. The colourful store is a long-time dream of friends Sophie McCoy and Julie Tulloch. They have worked together before in the furnishing business and it seemed a natural progression to present something together. They both declare they have very different tastes but somehow when they shop together for the store, it all complements. Sophie leans towards the pretty and feminine while Julie loves the ‘crazy stuff.’ Shopping for the store is mainly done at Gift Fairs twice a year in Auckland. Julie was born and bred in Masterton and raised three sons, laughingly described as the ‘wild heathens’. Initially a hairdresser, she learned the furnishing trade at Levene’s which used to sit opposite the former State Theatre in Masterton’s Queen Street. Curtains and Colour Consultations are her forte.

Sophie comes from Pahiatua and spent two years in Wanganui at the Design School. She has a daughter and a son. Sophie runs the store and has at her fingertips access to all manner of product ... you want something ... she will source it for you. What binds the two friends is the absolute love of colour. It is evident in the store and the clothes they wear. “You have to have colour,” says Julie. “It makes people smile.” And smile they do. In fact, you can’t help but grin as you wander around ‘The Whole Nine Yards’ store. It’s an eclectic mix of household treasures from the tiny felt tooth-fairy to the multi-coloured floral chair and porcelain birds. It’s all a bit magic. Sophie says they just love people coming in to have a wander and enjoy the beautiful things. Obviously it’s a bonus if they buy, but we generally just like to make people feel happy. They have one customer who often calls in and has a cuppa with them. What could be better?

Kirsty Lewis, Charlotte Albagnac and Ann Woods Lisa Severn OWNER

Art Deco style meets contemporary cuts Ten years ago Lisa Severn took a leap into the unknown by starting her own business - Stylan Hair Design - in Harley Street, Masterton. The salon, which was designed by Lisa and built by her husband Rhys, served the business well, but became too small as staff and client numbers grew. Last November the couple opened their new salon at 176 Chapel Street, after spending many evenings and weekends transforming a 1950s Art Deco into a stylish and contemporary space. “I wanted to create the same feeling as we had at Harley Street,” says Lisa. “But I wanted a professional look, with clean lines and a fresh, light feeling. “We took out walls, stripped the inside back, and redesigned the whole thing, with support from our parents and friends.” As well as being attractive, the salon is very practical with 11 off-road parking spaces.

Over the past few years Lisa has collected three talented senior hair stylists around her - Tash McHardy, Krystal Bennett and Jayne Cayless - along with nail technician Vicki Lewis. All four of the stylists are skilled in every aspect of hairdressing - cuts for women, men and children, colours, foils, hairups for weddings and balls, restyles, straightening, perms, sets, eyelash tinting, and eyebrow shaping and tinting. Stylan Hair Design is the only stockist of HCO Mini Cordless Hair Straighteners in New Zealand. Its stylists use Keune products and Lust colour which clients can also purchase. Lisa is dedicated to providing high customer satisfaction and excellent service, with 17 years’ experience. “We would like to thank everyone for continuing to support Stylan Hair Design. Like us on Facebook!”

Fixed conveyancing fee welcomed by home buyers First Property Legal specialises in residential property transactions - buying, selling and refinancing residential houses, residential investment and residential lifestyle properties. They also assist with Kiwisaver applications. The fixed price fee is appealing to clients because there are no hidden costs in straight forward conveyancing transactions. Clients know what their fee is, right from the start. Established by Masterton law firm Gawith Burridge, First Property Legal’s first employee was Legal Executive Kirsty Lewis. Due to the growth in demand, Kirsty was joined by Legal Executive Charlotte Albagnac in 2017. A few months later Ann Woods joined the Church Street, Masterton office as Assistant to the Legal Executives. Having fixed fees - which are available to view on their website - is hugely appealing, says Kirsty. “We offer a great service at a competitive price with no surprises. First-home buyers gravitate to us because of the fixed fee.

Hot Yoga For You, Masterton Shari Joy Smith

Y O G A – lifting mind, body and spirit

Taking time out for self is never an easy task, however, it’s an important aspect to our life’s balance reminds Shari Joy Smith. Shari who runs Hot Yoga For You from her studio in the Kuripuni Village, Masterton which opened in July 2012. “To be purposeful, the mind needs to be rested. In our busy world, we can be so fractured. We need to concentrate on breathing which in turn calms the fluctuations of the mind.” Shari’s studio is upstairs in the restored Victorian buildings in Kuripuni. An excited anticipation wells up as you climb the delightful ornate staircase to the studio. When you enter the room space, you are not disappointed. The room is bright, airy and warm, with a mirrored wall and timber floor. The room draws you in with a warm embrace and a feeling of peace. Shari says some people call it “coming home.” She believes coming to the mat is one of the most powerful actions one can ever do.

Shari explains that Hot Yoga means practicing in warm temperatures – 3334 degrees Celsius is ideal. It’s a carefully monitored heat with a humidity of 60-65% It’s a lovely tropical warmth which is soothing and hydrating. These two components are most important says Shari who admits when people first start classes they find it challenging but then quickly enjoy and embrace the warmth to the body each time they practice. The humidity prevents

injury and promotes detoxification. The breath can expand to deeper levels, cleanses and enhance a deeper release within the body. Many students observe their skin looks brighter. “A Glow” “A Shine” And who wouldn’t mind a glowing shining complexion as well as feeling great? A wide variation of classes are offered at Hot Yoga For You. The studio is open every day and there’s around 18 classes per week. • Heated Flow/Balance/YIN 2 Hour BLISS Class: 9:30am – 11:30am Monday and Friday. You get to spend more ‘time” in your practice (leaving earlier if you need) Vinyasa Yoga meaning ‘flow’ with the breath guiding the movement, assists in strengthening the body with varying asanas (poses). Breath will warm you inside and with the warmth of the room space, you are feeling invigorated in no time. The balance of varying poses helps us to learn to ground, cultivating the gaze (drishti) to be still and to become more centred … grounded. What follows is YIN, where we stretch out, slow down and hold to soft stretching. This allows the physical body to give, with less tension in the tissue, feeling a greater depth arrive in it’s own time. This slowing down gives “space” to observe the breath and observe any sensations. Feeling allows healing. • Yin / Restore Yoga Classes: 5 Classes Available In This Class Style Each Week. In Yin yoga, we target the deep connective tissues of the body - the ligaments, joints, bones, and deep fascia networks. A Yin class usually consists of a series of passive floor poses held for up to 3-5 minutes, that mainly work the lower part of the body - the hips, pelvis, inner thighs, low spine. These areas are especially rich in connective tissues. The restorative poses are generally supported by more bolsters and blocks providing support to the joints of the body to relax and rest with ease. This will give way to stresses held in the body. Yin/Restore Classes are an excellent beginner’s class. • Heated One Hour Flow Classes: 6am Classes and 5:30pm Classes. YOGA on the run suits the busy lifestyles when you can only spare the hour. This power style class is a dynamic, energising form of practice that sculpts, hones, tones, and strengthens every muscle in the body. This class is the perfect blend of sweat and serenity. • Heated Flow / Yin Class: Wednesday 9:30am. A spilt class of Flow Vinyasa

and Yin provides the great balance of breath flow with strengthening, and then a slowing down to longer held YIN poses. This is becoming a popular class for those that have only practiced YIN classes, and are now ready to explore and work on their breath and flow. • Beginners Building Block Classes (BBB) – Run March/May/July/Sept/ Nov. These are a flavour for those returning to yoga or have yet to start. This workshop style class, over the four consecutive Monday evenings, begin at 7pm. It is kept light, fun and students explore what it is to know their breath, how the body moves through our joint range, what ‘Downward Facing Dog’ is all about, stretching, and how you can touch your toes. • Qi Gong Classes Thursdays at 11am – with Shane Orr. A Practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine, TuiNa medical massage, acupuncture and herbal medicine - Shane Orr has practiced Qi Gong for 16-17 years. Qigong can enable people to connect to themselves and to nature, and this will influence their own health, both through movement and cultivation of Qi (a force that pervades everything). Qi gong is a series of static and moving exercises and postures which are proven to be very powerful in cultivating Qi. Shari continues to focus on the needs of the students and continues to look at ways to make the classes interesting, and so the classes will change from time to time. The yoga studio also provides a Non-Heated Class on Tuesday evenings at 7pm mostly guided by Karina Gough. This is available knowing that some students might prefer to not be in the heat.

An exciting new aspect of the Hot Yoga For You Studio is, a day retreat, with Shari and Shane offering a full day of nourishing and nurturing to mind, body and soul. Titled ‘Yoga Soul – Day Retreat.” These day retreats have been held once a month Feb/March/ April/May and encompass Qigong, Yoga (for all levels), Plant Based Foods (organic food prepared by Travis Clive’Griffin), Singing Bowls, Walks in Nature, Yin Yoga and Acupuncture (if you wish). A second series of these Day Retreats will be held later in the year Sept/Oct/Nov/Dec 2019. Bookings will come up on the Hot Yoga For You FB page as an EVENT to look out for. The road to Yoga and her remarkable welcoming studio began way back for Shari at Nireaha, west of Eketahuna where she was

27

born. She grew up in Masterton in the 1970s, travelled to the UK and moved to Auckland where she worked in banking, real estate and then studied in natural therapies where she studied muscular therapies. Here Shari had opportunities to explore yoga. An accident with a horse at age 28, had her looking at ways of healing her body naturally. Returning to Wairarapa in early 2003, having a beautiful daughter in 2004, Shari had her own clinic in NMT/Sports Massage Therapy for a number of years then found a yearning to seek yoga again and her training began out of Wellington. She says that she is “still growing with it” 12 years on.

Shari has been heartened by the “amazing Yoga community” in Wairarapa. It’s never too late to start Yoga pointing out she has people in their 70s and has special classes for pregnant Mums run by Karina Gough. At the Yoga Studio “Everyone benefits”. While it’s obvious Shari is convinced about Hot Yoga, let’s hear from some of her students: “I had the best yoga session tonight and with only two classes a week I am seeing huge progress in my body’s ability and in my mind. I wish I’d started years ago. Big thanks to the wonderful Shari and her team.” Michelle “At 67 years of age, I am enjoying my first experience of yoga twice weekly. My family and friends are now commenting on my increased fitness and positive outlook in life! Yoga is clearly for the mind and body. Come and join me to find a new lease of life!” Christine “I am quite new to yoga but have tried it at two studios in Sydney and I never thought I would find such an amazing yoga studio in my new hometown Masterton. The quality of the studio and the teachers is of such high standards. I love how it affects me, I can go into class in a bad mood and come out a different person. It’s helping my fitness and mental wellbeing destressing my life from the busy lifestyle of work and study. Thank you for being so welcoming and I look forward to the long future with you all and the amazing changes to my mind and body.” Ana

Natural Therapy Options

Lot Eight Nalini Baruch ENTREPRENEUR

Pacific Woman in Business winner and the olive oil taste maker

Becoming aware of your breathing and caring for your body

Nalini Baruch and her husband, Colin, purchased a year-old olive grove in 1997 on the Lake Ferry Road, south of Martinborough, with the aim to one day provide New Zealand with home grown premium extra virgin olive oils. Years later, with some of the original trees replaced with her choice of olive varieties, Nalini has invested her time in honing the craft by being involved in all aspects of her business, Lot Eight. From the grove to the table. And, their vision of providing New Zealand has expanded to the world. There is one particular unique oil which was commissioned by a Japanese chef and is destined for Japan.

Janet Williams

NATURAL HEALTH THERAPIST Natural Health Therapist Janet Williams has been offering massage for the relief of aches and pains, tension and stress for the last 23 years in Masterton. Over time, she’s added to this treatment – BowtechBowen Therapy, foot joint mobilisation, pregnancy massage and more recently the Buteyko Breathing Method. Ongoing training and professional development is a major part of Janet’s commitment to providing a continually improved service to her clients. In 1996, Janet began her diploma in treatment massage at the Wellington School of Massage. It was with this qualification that she got into natural healing and joined the Chiropractic Centre in Chapel Street. In 2000, she trained in Bowen Therapy, a gentle treatment for acute and chronic conditions, balancing the body as well as being an alternative to treating aches and pains, stimulating energy flow and general health improvement. In 2016, Janet trained in Sydney by Patrick McKeown, a world-renowned speaker and instructor in the Buteyko Breathing Method. Some of the conditions that Buteyko has been known to improve are asthma; snoring; sleep apnoea; breathlessness; tightness in the chest; stress; anxiety; poor concentration; fatigue; insomnia; sinusitis and

headaches. Janet explains it is a useful tool in optimising one’s general health, including improving sports performance. Buteyko Breathing is a course of 1.5 hour long breathing classes over four weeks. The classes usually involve about 4-5 clients who learn to understand how it works and what they need to do to help themselves. In 2017 an opportunity became available to move into larger premises which enabled Janet to practice her passion for Buteyko Breathing Re-education as a self-help wellness tool for her clients. The new business, Natural Therapy Options, allowed her the space to teach the classes. Rooms available within the premises allows for having other practitioners to join her practicing Remedial Massage, Counselling and Supervision, Career Coaching and Hypnotherapy. Janet has had lots of positive and valuable feedback and says she couldn’t be happier than seeing happy, well clients walking out the door!

Are you living Struggling to with PAIN? BREATHE? TRY BOWEN THERAPY A gentle treatment for many conditions ranging from traumatic injury to chronic illness, stress, anxiety, and more. Stimulates energy and vitality, balancing the whole body. Each treatment is personalised to your specific health needs.

LEARN BUTEYKO BREATHING A natural approach to relieving asthma, hayfever, allergies, sleeping problems, anxiety, stress and many other health disorders. 4 weekly classes plus revision Next courses start Tuesday, 18th June, 4.30 to 6pm and Friday 21st June 9.30 to 11am.

Many of the herbs and spices used in Indian cooking were, in the 90s, difficult to find in New Zealand, which allowed Nalini to sample flavours from other cuisines to develop her own unique fusion flavours. Nalini believes that New Zealand is full of beautiful natural products, all ready to be utilised in ways to keep food lovers looking forward to new and exciting ready to use products. Her ability to create food using fresh ingredients is the reason Lot Eight is able to produce cold pressed fragrant olive oils like the Citrus, Yuzu, Harissa, Aromatic, Flavours of the East and Herbes de Provence. Nalini handpicks each ingredient and determines the quantities she will need to create flavours when pressed with fresh olives. The result is a combined flavour profile that pleases the palate of anyone looking for fresh wholesome flavours. Chefs, as well as home cooks with discerning palates, seek the creations. Nalini remembers when they tasted their oil after the first harvest, she had never tasted anything so good. “This grassy warm oil which tasted like Wairarapa.” Nalini arrived in New Zealand in the early 1980s from Fiji. Her police officer father and broadcaster mother wanted their daughters to gain a sound education in New Zealand. Nalini had always planned to return to her home country hopeful of joining the Foreign Office once completing university. However, the 1987 Fijian coup changed all that. It was a watershed moment for the young Political

Science student – a kind of “awakening” as Nalini describes it. It firmed her decision to remain in New Zealand after completing her Honours year, and her parents joined her. She went on to study law and was admitted to the bar in 1998. She practised as a Barrister in her own Wellington chambers until the move to Martinborough in 2002. Nalini still works as a barrister but the successful oils take up almost her entire time at present. Her efforts have been recognised too. In 2016 Nalini was named Pacific Woman in Business and in 2018, she was runner-up in the Cuisine Artisan Awards. “The avid following of Lot Eight oils by chefs mainly, and the appreciation for what we make for our customers, has created a huge passion for what I do at Lot Eight. Each season I set out to find new and exciting ingredients, I dream up the tastes they will produce when pressed with olives and anxiously wait for the season to start so I can begin experimenting with these ingredients. My life with Lot Eight has become that of a taste maker looking for her next big taste high!”

Susan Stephen SALES CONSULTANT

Independent real estate business, Susan Stephen & Co, brings a fresh, professional and local approach to real estate in Martinborough. Set up by Susan, it is part of the Andco Realty Group with eight branches in Wellington, Kapiti Coast and Wairarapa. Starting real estate 17 years ago, Susan has extensive experience in the Martinborough property market. It is working with people and matching clients to property is what she most enjoys about her role.

“It’s such a personal service and I love that connection with people.” Susan has always been hugely involved in the local communities that she has resided in and is very supportive of local fundraising causes and sports clubs through sponsorship plus the sponsorship of an annual Life Flight mission.

feeling of being in a safe and inclusive community. They are a great group of women, and I felt we would all benefit from getting together occasionally.” Two years ago, the women began meeting monthly for dinner at The Village Café where they share friendship, resources and skills - anything from firewood to legal help. For Susan, South Wairarapa is where her heart is. Susan has lived most of her life here being raised on the family farm at Pirinoa. Her two children reside in the Tinui district and she enjoys spending time with her three grandchildren. If you’re looking to make Martinborough and South Wairarapa your home, Susan should be your first point of call. Well known for her friendly and honest approach, she is assisted by Sarah Brass in their office at 64 Jellicoe Street, Martinborough.

She is also a member of the local Community Patrol, plays business house bowls and a committee member of a Garden Group. More recently she established a group in Martinborough called WOTO – Women On Their Own. “I had sold many houses to women living on their own who have enjoyed the

Jo and Kelly established Jo Kelly & Co Realty three years ago as a boutique real estate agency. “We went back to our roots,” says Jo. “We are a small group who work as a team.” Jo and Kelly opened their office in a central location on High Street, North, Carterton, to serve all of Wairarapa. The other two members of Jo Kelly & Co Realty are Marketing & Sales Person Brooke Malyon and Office Manager Gaylene Malcolm. All four have many years’ experience in local real estate, with the support of the “Andco” real estate co-operative behind them. Jo and Kelly operate a round-the-clock policy so one of them is always on call. Kelly believes this level of accessibility, coupled with their honesty, openness and astute marketing strategies, underpins their success in selling homes. Jo fine-tuned her negotiating skills and drive to secure the best deal, when she was a share broker in Switzerland specialising in the US markets, and has been using these to achieve the best results for her clients for the past 13 years.

Kelly has successfully marketed and sold executive and family homes, residential developments, investment properties, development sites and lifestyle/rural for the past 15 years. Brooke has over 10 years’ experience across many facets of the industry including sales, property management, administration and marketing. Gaylene has been with Jo and Kelly for six years, specialising in the office management. Jo Wisler and Kelly McIsaac were the first to introduce free home staging to Wairarapa, three years ago. Research shows that home-staged properties sell for more. Home-staging is not about personalising a home, but de-personalising it, so that any potential buyer can see themselves living in it. And to this day they are the only real estate agents who offer it as a free part of their service to their clients. “We are passionate about helping our clients and want to add value,” says Jo. “Home-staging is part of that.”

“Don’t over-think,just do it”

Passionate about keeping our skin safe

Living her dream: Barbara Orpin purchased ‘Heaven Scent’ Florist in Kuripuni, Masterton, one year ago and feels the name is very apt. Barbara has always seen flowers as something pretty but never more so than when she received a bunch of flowers many years ago and was completely mesmerised by just how beautiful they were. “The combination of flowers, their placement and against the texture of foliage captured me, and I knew instantly I wanted to be a florist. Living in Titahi Bay, she attended the nearby Whitireia Polytech which offered a National Certificate in Floristry. “I am, and shall forever be eternally grateful for my tutor Megan Parker, who with her incredible personality and approach, and undoubted talent, passion and knowledge, encouraged and believed in me. When experiencing any form of doubt in myself with pre-assessment nerves, ‘Megs’ would often say to me “Don’t overthink it, just do it.” Barbara’s first employment with flowers began on the auction floor as a trolley hand in the wholesale markets of Grenada where she rose at 2am to start work at 3am! This was to be the first step into further opportunity and positions within the wholesale industry. Although this was hard physical work and often a very challenging job, Barbara believes the knowledge she gained through the experience was invaluable.

“These years furthered my knowledge of flowers and foliage incredibly. It also gave me the most incredible respect for our dedicated growers and heightened my desire to create.” When timing and opportunity aligned, she found a position at a florist in Porirua. When the owner decided to sell, she gave Barbara the first option to purchase the business prior to listing its sale. Barbara’s instincts, and as a parent in wanting to provide a fresh new start for her two children, was to be the deciding factor into selling her home of 20 years and her first introduction to Wairarapa. It also led her to find ‘Heaven Scent’ florist was for sale. It’s proven to be the very best move for her. Business is booming and steadily increasing and there’s been a consistent, almost overwhelming amount of positive customer feedback supporting the shop’s new look and diversity. Barbara’s parents have also been drawn to the region and purchased a house in Masterton. She has also met partner Grant too. Among all the flowers at Heaven Scent, you will also find an exquisite selection of baby knitwear by Barbara’s mother and sister who sell under the name of ‘Pukeko Crafts’. There’s a meaningful story behind every bunch of flowers ordered at ‘Heaven Scent’ and Barbara feels it’s a privilege to create. She wants to thank the community for making her feel so welcome.

Bayleys

Toni Sinclair & Raewyn Liddington

Selling home and lifestyle dreams in beautiful Wairarapa Raewyn Liddington and Toni Sinclair are a likeable pair working in an industry which they both love. It shows, when they talk enthusiastically about Wairarapa and its increasing allure to city dwellers, wanting their dollar to stretch a bit further and to slow down their pace of life. Real estate figures in residential and lifestyle properties have increased from 5 – 20 per cent in the past year says Raewyn. “It’s a very exciting time for both buyers and sellers,” says Raewyn. “An interesting trend is that people used to come to Wairarapa thinking they would get work here but many are now content to commute.” The community values and friendliness of the people is also being commented on and an obvious attraction. Raewyn moved into real estate in 2010 following her husband Brent, who got involved in 2008. She likes Bayleys as a company, as it’s Wairarapa-wide and its salespeople can sell all over the region.

Raewyn had previously worked in the customer service industry and is a keen gym member and loves walking. She and Toni have known each other for 20 years, as their children all attended Opaki Primary school together. Toni came from a nursing background, and started in Real Estate in 2008, she enjoys both the flexibility and variation in work that the job provides. It is important to Toni that she supports local businesses as she earns a living from listing within the Wairarapa region,” Real Estate is about relationship building and people as much as it is about property.” It’s obvious these two have a great professional relationship, and welcome your enquiries anytime. They are in the modern Bayley’s office at 186 Chapel Street, Masterton.

Bayleys has been in existence for 46 years beginning in Auckland and now has over 90 offices country wide. It is New Zealand owned and operated, something which appeals to both Raewyn and Toni.

Kate Garrett, Toni Schdroski and Courtney Norman

A very personal home decoration service Settled in their purpose-built shop in Kuripuni, two and a half years ago, Toni and Carl Schdroski have created a haven for classic and modern furniture. They have operated Country Life for 30 years and so have developed a reputation that offers quality curtain and upholstery fabrics with their signature on-site upholstery service, provided by Mike Towgood and Carl. Toni keeps things fine-tuned doing administration and accounts, while Kate visits clients’ homes around the region, offering in-home consultations on curtains, ranging from romans to sunscreens, roller and timber blinds, venetians, honeycomb blinds and shutters. With a Bachelor of Interior Design, Kate is well qualified to help with colour schemes, textiles, wallpapers and furnishings. She loves working with light and colour. Courtney is also well-qualified having a Degree in Spatial Design and has just returned to Country Life after maternity leave.

Country Life are proud of the fact that they offer mostly New Zealand-made furnishings. “We like to use and promote New Zealand-made and feel it’s important to support each other in the furnishing industry. Buying local is very important to us”. Also important, is the service they provide by refurbishing sentimental and favourite pieces of furniture. “There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the delight of a person when we’ve restored grandma’s old chair, or breathed new life into an old couch”. Toni has seen many furnishing trends over the years but she says “timeless and classic” are always in vogue, and that is what they specialise in at Country Life. If your home is in need of a fresh new look, visit Country Life Interiors at 431 Queen Street, Kuripuni. They are open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and Saturdays 10am-2pm.

True Dentistry Carterton

Storm Productions

Robyn Cherry-Campbell EVENT MANAGEMENT Left to right: Trish, Serena, Belinda and Tiff

Trish Leabourne and Tiff Logan OWNERS

Honest Professional Local When David Banks decided to sell his dental practice of 40 years, he couldn’t have chosen a better team than Trish Leabourne and Tiff Logan. They have embraced this successful Carterton dental practice, added their own flair to the building, but are still continuing the same friendly and personal service that has been its hallmark. “We’re no new broom,” says Trish “we’re friendly and professional, but certainly not formal.” They described when they came to visit the practice, they walked in and “it just felt right”. Officially, Trish and Tiff took over the practice from July 2018 and they’ve been easing their way in, allowing David to farewell his patients. There has been a name change to True Dentistry. True – standing for Trusted, Realistic, Unique, Experienced. They have had fun creating a logo and have enjoyed using the creative genius of graphic designer, Lynn O’Shea from Fresh Fields. Trish and Tiff are both highly experienced dental practitioners having extensive careers in Palmerston North and Wellington, not to mention their tours abroad with the military in challenging places like Bougainville, Afghanistan and Timor-Leste. As Dental Officers,

Trish served over 26 years and Tiff, 24 years. They have been long-time friends, meeting during military service, but it was at the shared beach house at Riversdale, which they purchased together with their husbands, where the seed was sown to purchase the Carterton dental practice. Tiff also owns a dental practice at Kilbirnie, and while children were at school, Wellington was the best location for herself and husband, David. She had left the military six years ago. Trish was completing her term of engagement as a Dental Officer and was looking for a new direction. It has resulted in the perfect partnership. Both women have their own areas of dental interest and expertise. Tiff has focused on the cause of gum disease and systemic health and she enjoys cosmetic work. Trish has a focus on community dentistry and enjoys seeing how dental care can make such an empowering difference to someone’s well-being. She still serves as a military reservist on occasion and was recently on exercise in Hawke’s Bay where she helped out the community with their dental care. Both Trish and Tiff are well supported by Serena Naysmith and Kym Pickett their Dental Assistants and Belinda Buckley, the Practise Manager. When you visit, there’s the engaging sound of female laughter!

Whipping up a storm of events in Wairarapa Wairarapa’s energy attracted Robyn Cherry-Campbell to the region. She’s mirrored this energy with her own efficient and enthusiastic style of event management which has seen her behind several exciting happenings. When we talked to her, she was immersed in the organising of the Wairarapa Balloon Festival – this is her third year with this event. Robyn is contracted to co-ordinate everything from five morning ascensions, a couple of ‘pop-up’ events, two burner parades, to the nightglow, and the food trucks – there were 45 this year. Robyn says there’s around nine months of planning, about a month wrapping up afterwards and then it’s almost time to start again! Other events she has been involved in are the Gladstonebury Music Festival; the Oversew Fashion Awards; the Big Wai Art Sale; Carterton’s Daffodil Festival and the Charles Rooking Carter Awards for the Carterton District Council. There’s a new one too, the Summer Street Party in Carterton’s Holloway Street which began two years ago. Robyn is quick to acknowledge Go Carterton and its enthusiastic and motivated members as well as Destination Wairarapa for its co-ordination of the region’s events, aiming for no double-ups with the increasing number of events in Wairarapa. How Robyn got to the region is a circuitous route. Born in Wellington, her family moved to Auckland then

Whitianga. She planned to go overseas for six months and stayed away 22 years. In the UK, she established a promotions business providing staff for events. In Singapore, she set up a marketing company, where boutique New Zealand wines were starting to be featured hugely. With an English-born husband and threeyear old daughter, Robyn found herself in Sydney working for a stockbroking firm as PA to the Managing Director, before ending up with over two dozen clients as financial controller, it was a full-on, albeit fascinating role. “My brain seems to be wired for doing accounts. I just love it.” When she re-married to Mick, the couple were looking for a sea change and New Zealand was enticing. Robyn had visited Carterton many times where she has a brother living. In August 2010, they moved across the Tasman and made their new home in Carterton’s trying out lifestyle living. Mick commutes to Wellington and with Robyn’s event management business getting busier, they soon threw away their farming tools and moved into town. “The best thing we’ve done. I feel so much more relaxed,” says Robyn perched in her office in the backyard. And the name ‘Storm’ Productions? “I love the wildness of storms and have memories of sitting with my father on our balcony at Mercury Bay, near Whitianga, watching the wild sea and sky. Event management is a bit of a whirlwind, so it seemed appropriate.”

WCM Legal

Elizabeth Johnston

Jo McDonald

Law, history and art – a prize mix

Taking the stress out of legal issues

Elizabeth Johnston is a new face in the legal firm WCM Legal’s Carterton office. She will be doing property and commercial work, trusts and asset planning and assisting Keith McClure, a former Principal in the firm, and now consultant.

Apart from law, Elizabeth’s passion is history and art and it was a natural progression for her to apply for the vacant board position at Aratoi in Masterton. She has been an avid collector of New Zealand art and is keen to learn more about Greytown’s history.

Elizabeth was admitted to the bar in 2003 graduating from Victoria University with a LLB and a BCA in accounting and commercial law. Raised in Masterton, she was told from a young age she’d probably be a lawyer. “I loved talking, reading and writing, so that probably had something to do with it,” Her father, now retired was known as ‘J.J.’ Johnston to all in the Wairarapa police force. Her mother, Clare, is a teacher. “I admired my father’s work in the police and I believe law is a nice compliment to that work.”

Elizabeth likes that the firm she has joined has joined has deep-seated history in Wairarapa. WCM Legal is the amalgamation of five firms. In 1981 Ian and Peter Wollerman of Major Gooding & Wollerman in Carterton, and Ed Cooke and Keith McClure of Thompson Tate Cullinane and Cooke in Greytown, merged their practices, and also took over the practice of H W Banks in Featherston, to become Wollerman Cooke and McClure. It was renamed WCM Legal in December 2006.

For the past 15 years, Elizabeth has worked in Wellington and overseas, including the Cayman Islands, in a variety of jobs. The past three years has been at Kiwi Wealth, a sister company to Kiwibank, specialising in investment and fund management. When she and her accountant husband, Scott, had their first child, Annabel, they decided they wanted to move to Wairarapa. When son, Thomas, was born, they happily settled in Greytown.

In 2012 WCM Legal merged with Michael Bale and Kirsten Townsley, practising as Wilson and Co in Wellington. In 2016, a merger with Major Gooding and Partners, situated in the Masterton ‘head office’ of the former Major Gooding and Wollerman, brought that firm back to the WCM Legal family.

“We wanted our children to experience a childhood similar to our own. Lots of open space and grass to play on.” They love the Greytown vibe and character buildings.

LAWYERS & NOTARY PUBLI C

Working out of the Carterton office ticks Elizabeth’s interest in history. The Carterton office traces its roots back to the 1890s. During 2006, WCM Legal was involved in the refurbishment of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board heritage building on Memorial Square and the premises became its Carterton office in December of that year.

Jo McDonald is a Consultant at WCM Legal. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives and is a Licenced Conveyancer. Jo often meets with stressed people who have several issues to resolve. Her job is to help her clients sort those issues and hopefully progress with a great outcome. “There’s nothing nicer than seeing happy people at the end of a transaction,” says Jo, who has worked in the legal profession for longer than she cares to admit. “I hope I do my work with a lot of heart.” “I’ve seen a lot of changes in my time. I can wear trousers to the office now and I can address my male colleagues by their first names, I’m treated as an equal – in fact, there’s no gender bias where I work.” She says WCM Legal treats its employees very well, acknowledging and recognising talents and qualifications. Describing what a Legal Executive is compared to a lawyer, Jo says “we are the ‘nurses’ of the legal profession – we have our own client base and areas of expertise - we have just not been to law school and admitted to the bar.” As one client succinctly put it to Jo recently, she is a QBE – “qualified by experience”.

executive qualification by correspondence. It was her move to Wellington about 20 years ago which saw her find a natural affinity towards all types of property transactions and subdivision work which she now predominantly practices in. Jo also does future and trust planning. She loves her work; the way it can help people; her interaction with clients; other members of the profession; referrers and the wonderful team of people at WCM Legal Her days can be long – often 13-14 hour days, so when she gets home to her place in Maymorn with husband, John, she loves to spend time reading and gardening. Concerned about the amount of preservatives appearing in food, Jo and John aim to live as sustainably as possible. She loves the peaceful life of being in the country. “I am with people during my working days and that energises me - but I also love my peace and quiet.”

Jo started her career as an ‘after school dog’s body’ at a small law practice in south Taranaki and while working full time, gained her legal

science and a love for horses.

A challenge, a buzz still satisfying after nearly 20 years

Angela and Kelsey tell how it took them a while to gain the trust and confidence of some male customers wondering if “these women” knew what they were talking about.

Nell Macdonald has been selling real estate for nearly 20 years and she says the challenge, the buzz and the satisfaction of sealing the deal, still drives and excites her.

While agriculture and farm services have been very much the domain of men in the past, modern trends have caught up with the industry and at the Masterton store, three of the five full-time staff are women. They are Angela Parkinson, Kelsey Wilkinson and Kala Hunter – all customer service representatives.

Support services for the customer team is great too, vets and animal health experts are just a call away and they have a collection of specialists they can easily call on when requried.

“It’s all about meeting people, building up good relationships, and giving them the absolute best service.”

That was a year ago and she’s enjoying the challenge of selling residential and lifestyle properties, in what she describes as a “dazzling market.”

At PGG Wrightson, she does this with her husband, John, who has also joined her in real estate. She describes him as “her PA.”

With her are agents, Helena O’Connor, John Murray and of course her PA and hubby, John.

She was attracted to PGG Wrightson because of its one-stop-shop nature for the rural community. “There’s everything here all under one roof.”

They are supported by the reception/ admin team of Linda Ferretti and Kim Peachey.

Angela grew up on a farm at Ponatahi and Dalefield out of Carterton. Horses are her big love and she is a regular dressage competitor. This interest has meant the PGG Wrightson store now features many things equine and Angela is able to help customers gleaning from her first-hand experience with horses.

So, if it’s stock feed, fencing gear, water testing, fertiliser, horticulture needs, seed, animal health, clothing and any other general merchandise, PGG Wrightson is there, fully stocked. Anyone is a customer! They are in the big blue building at 38 Lincoln Road, Masterton.

Kelsey is from a dairy farm near Tirau in Waikato. She has a huge passion for cows and has worked in all facets of dairying. She especially enjoys milking. “Small herds are especially lovely and you get to know each cow and their personality so well.” Kala, born in Waikato has a strong agriculture background with a BA in Ag

Nell began her real estate venture at Riversdale beach. John was managing the camping ground and Gary Bodle, beach resident and developer, mentored Nell during her employment with his Real Estate Company. After the closure of Gary Bodle’s Real Estate Agency, Nell continued her real estate career with Bayleys and managed to sell 20 sections during this period.

Since their move into town, she has worked at several real estate companies. She was at Farmlands, when she got the offer to join PGG Wrightson.

Nell grew up in Wairoa and by the age of 17, was eager to get to the city. She arranged, through the local postmaster, to do a Post Office training course in Wellington and she was off. In Wairarapa, apart from real estate, she managed the Wairarapa Electoral Office for 15 years, raised three children and is the proud grandmother of nine.

She was also involved in selling the 70 units in Holdsworth Village - by this stage, she was hooked on real estate as a career.

WE ARE PROUD TO STOCK A WIDE RANGE OF QUALITY EQUINE PRODUCTS I am proud to be part of PGG Wrightson where HONESTY & INTEGRITY count. When it comes to selling your property call Nell at PGG Wrightson for the ULTIMATE result in Real Estate.

OWNER

MUSCULOSKELETAL THERAPIST

Katrina Sigvertsen was only in her second year of study when she started her own business - ProActive Massage.

While massage is usually associated with relaxation, Katrina focuses on acute and chronic pain relief and management.

By the time she finished her studies, Katrina had become the only massage therapist in Wairarapa with the Bachelor in Health Studies (Massage & Neuromuscular Therapy), as well as running a thriving clinic in Kuripuni Shopping Village.

Her patients have included some of New Zealand’s and the world’s top sports people, parents and staff at the Neonatal Unit at Wellington Hospital, and oncology patients.

Katrina grew up on a dairy farm in Eketahuna where she used to massage the animals. “Massage is something family members always told me I should do, but I had never thought of becoming a massage therapist as a career option. “I worked in retail, hospitality and administration but then I decided I wanted to do something that makes me happy and helps people.” Along the way Katrina won the Academic Excellence Award for 2015 from The New Zealand College of Massage as its top student for her Bachelor in Health Studies. She also achieved the Diploma in Health Science (Massage & Sports Therapy), Diploma in Health Science (Therapeutic Massage) also winning the Student Clinic Performance Award, and Certificates in Oncology Massage as well as Relaxation Massage.

But the majority of her patients are everyday people going about their lives - tradespeople doing hard physical work and office workers suffering pain from being stationary all day long and everyone in between. Katrina focuses on musculoskeletal treatment to reduce pain, restore movement and prevent further injuries. “My passion is pain science understanding how pain affects a person both physically and mentally. I focus on getting my patients back to optimum health, so that they can again do the things they enjoy.” Using her profound knowledge of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology , Katrina uses a variety of techniques to relieve pain. But where pain is a fact of life, she gives her patients advice and the confidence to begin using their bodies again.

In an age of technology and mechanical equipment, it’s an honour to be able to provide a service completely hands-on and results-driven, using quality products according to Alex Tomlinson of ‘Essentially You’ in Greytown.

Good grooming affects a person mentally and physically and I have seen utter transformations in people when they have taken time out to care for themselves. It can provide a kind of sanity,” quietly enthuses Alex.

“We’re all about nurturing people.”

Alex is joined in her salon by Zoe Appelman for three days a week. Zoe juggles motherhood with her beauty therapy work.

For the past 25 years, Alex has worked as a beauty therapist, initially in Masterton and now in Greytown. Three years ago, she purchased ‘Essentially You’, the clinic she had worked in for 15 years, and continues the pampering service which goes way beyond cleansers moisturisers and make-up. She has just changed from the much beloved Decleor product range to Aromatherapy Associates from the UK, delivering the same luxury and quality use of aromatherapy and plant-based ingredients. The Sothys skincare range from France will join the line-up, another luxurious, resultsdriven brand, focusing on ageing well and treating the effects of sun damage and pigmentation.

Zoe has similar values to Alex in that they both have holistic views using their hands-on skills, techniques and sumptuous product ranges. “It’s a nice balance for us as Zoe is young and I, reaching my 50th year, hope to be able to urge women to age healthily. “It’s not just about just being young but getting good sleep; eating a correct diet and taking exercise. It all helps your wellbeing and relationships.” Because she has been in the business so long, Alex says she has clients who have come to her for many years and they have formed a great relationship. “It’s something I really value.”

Joyce Blok, the New Zealand skincare for New Zealand skins, continues to be a popular product among the clinic’s patrons. “Beauty is not a vanity. It’s all about ageing well and feeling good in your skin.

MARRIAGE CELEBRANT

Emma loves her role as a marriage celebrant. She trained when she was just 27 and two years on has married some interesting couples. “The first couple I ever married had been together for 25 years. It was a wet winter’s day at Riversdale Beach,” she recalls. “But still a wonderful moment of people making a commitment.” Her smallest wedding involved just nine people. They were married in their home. It was one of the nicest events I’ve attended. She’s even married her landlords. Born and raised in Masterton, she moved to Wellington after finishing school. Interested in travel and event management, she studied at the Sir George Seymour Travel School, now the NZ School of Tourism. She had worked at Copthorne Masterton during her school years and loved setting up rooms for weddings and other events.

sound references from four people, attending training, and being interviewed by the court registrar. Weddings are her first love but she’s also been asked to do a naming ceremony and mulls over conducting funerals as a future extension of her work. Heartened by being asked to do weddings in several areas including Napier and Manawatu, she says her clientele seems to be largely word of mouth. Emma likes to work with people’s budgets too to make their day easier. Although she has a starting rate, there’s lot of room to negotiate to make the day as special as possible. She also custom writes services for each couple when requested. Meantime, Emma has a Facebook page @eaylingmarriage. Also, visit her on the NZ celebrants’ website celebrants.dia.govt.nz

It may be Bryan Stott’s name above the door but the large furniture store on Masterton’s Lincoln Road is definitely a team effort. There are five females in a staff of eight, who keep Bryan on his toes, including his wife Rachael. There are two team members Manager, Jane Lyford and assistant manager Glenda Wenden, who have been with the company since 2003, when it was established. Angela Smart has been part of the sales team for 11 years and Linda Nicolls, the office manager is a relative newbie at two year’s service.

It took a year to gain her licence, seeking

There’s 18,000 square feet of display space and the chance to showcase the furniture in light airy premises. They are proud of being the LAZBOY agent and the proof is in the large number on display. Beds are a very popular market and they have all the top selling brands. Jane, Glenda and Angela know their products and thoroughly enjoy repeat customers where they can get personally involved in furnishing homes.

It’s a scene of great hilarity and camaraderie on the Friday afternoon when the Times-Age visits.

Because of their extensive product knowledge, they are able to recall and order items even if they are not on the shop floor.

It’s obvious, this is a very effective team with a wealth of experience and knowledge.

They simply ‘wing it’ when selecting items for display trying to provide as broad a range as possible.

Bryan and Rachael came from Christchurch 16 years ago to open Bryan’s Furniture in Masterton, where Rachael had grown up.

The old saying ’I’ll know it when I see it’ doesn’t work all the time and that’s when Bryan’s Furniture team step up and they have a great chat about what someone is looking for.

Bryan had been involved in furniture retail in Christchurch and it was a natural progression to offer that experience in Masterton.

Gaining accreditation as a celebrant seemed a natural progression.

The move to Lincoln Road four years ago was a great vote of confidence in the Wairarapa market.

Great customer service is their focus.

Linda Oldfield PERSONAL TRAINER

Lisa Bull HAIRDRESSER

A hairdressing treat and a temporary escape Entering Lisa Bull’s hairdressing salon in a purpose-built room at the rear of Bryan’s Furniture on Masterton’s Lincoln Road, is like escaping the rat race of life into the illusion you could be seated in a hidden boutique in any part of the world. “My clients get a surprise when they first see no windows to the outside, but soon become transported into the peaceful anonymity the salon provides.” The black ceiling with lots of down lights gives the feeling that you are under the night sky, it’s like a little hidden sanctuary. After hairdressing in other Masterton salons and gaining over 30 years’ experience in most hairdressing services, Lisa has made many long-standing friends and is now thrilled to have her own working space.

Having the staff at Bryan’s and Shape Shop right next door, run by Linda Oldfield, Lisa is never at a loss to enjoy a cuppa with someone. She looks forward to meeting new clients to have a chat about hair care needs. Lisa is married to Robbie and they have two grown children. Born in London, she came to New Zealand with her parents in 1972. Her engineer father got a job at the freezing works in Masterton and here the family stayed.

She has been operating from this boutique for the past 15 months with her opening hours being from Tuesday to Friday with three late nights Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. “With three businesses under the one roof it’s created a very warm friendly hub.”

Unique Women’s Only Fitness Experience Linda Oldfield’s Shape Shop – the only ‘women’s only’ fitness studio in Masterton has been operating for four years now. It was a huge leap of faith for Linda to step out and establish her own fitness studio, however the hard work has paid off. “There’s certainly an appetite for a women’s only studio - some women in the 30- to 60-year age bracket don’t feel comfortable working out in the usual gym environment.” Linda has created the perfect safe, professional and friendly space for them to come and train. She’s oozing the success of her studio services and lists the results of an inhouse survey she undertook among her clientele. “Friendly, helpful, relaxed, family like, safe and professional, challenging at all ability levels, constant encouragement, non-judgemental, great vibe and well planned sessions” are among the comments she has received. She is assisted in the running of the studio by husband Steve, and training assistant Karen Wright. Linda describes Karen as initially a ‘reluctant client’ who achieved marvellous personal results with Shape Shop. Karen has subsequently become enthused to help other women achieve similar goals by working out at the studio. Linda has a Bachelor of Nursing and is a qualified Personal Trainer while her husband holds a masters level qualification in Nutrition. Linda and Steve have lived in Wairarapa all their married lives and have two adult sons – and they are about to become grandparents for the first time.

Linda has always been keen on good health through exercise and a healthy lifestyle. To be able to promote this to women in Wairarapa in particular is a special thrill for her. “It’s not all about perfection but simply being healthier through positive fitness and nutrition habits. I have seen many women’s lives turned around both physically and mentally through the programme we offer at the studio.” She describes her studio as offering Personal Training & Supervised Group Weight Training Sessions, some are more focused on building strength and tone while others offer a more cardio focus while still using weights. “It’s quite a unique focus no other ‘gym’ offers locally. We’ve created a culture here at the studio where like-minded women are training together and enjoying the experience, that’s energising in itself.” Linda is proud of her studio’s community involvement too. Many of her clients took part in the 2019 Wairarapa Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. For their fundraiser, they turned the studio into a pre-loved clothing store for an evening allowing clients to clean out their wardrobes and buy some new goodies. “It was a lot of fun and helped create a family feel amongst us which we all value.” Linda shares her end of the Bryans Furniture Building with Lisa Bull owner of Belle La Dame Hair Salon. “It’s a great relationship for both of us and we often share clients.” It’s like a one stop shop for health and beauty.”

Sellar & Sellar

Clare Jacobson CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT

Smashing the glass ceiling in the accounting world Clare Jacobson can justifiably be proud of her recent achievement. She has been appointed a Principal at Sellar & Sellar Chartered Accountants in Masterton – she is one of three Principals who lead the 16-member team. She joins Principals Dominic Stewart and Graeme Bayliss and is the first woman to be appointed to the position, in a firm which dates back to 1884. It is the oldest accounting firm in Wairarapa. Clare joined Sellar & Sellar in 2005 as a staff accountant and she says it was beyond her wildest dreams that she would end up a Principal there. “I still feel a bit like an imposter”, she laughs, still coming to terms with

her new position which came into play March 2019. “I’m very proud of being given it.”

is far from the stuffy, boring world of numbers and balance sheets that often accountants get imagined for.

Clare is far from an imposter however and comes to the role with a wealth of credentials and experience.

“It’s more about the clients, helping them financially, and getting to know them.

Born in Auckland, she grew up in Wellington, spent a decade working in the UK and upon returning, settled in Wairarapa where she met her husband, Vic. She has always worked in the accounting world and upon returning to New Zealand, wanted to formalise her experience and gain qualifications by graduating with a Bachelor in Business Studies from Massey University. Clare loves her work, pointing out it

“We work very closely together learning their life history. “It becomes very personal and we pride ourselves on that relationship building. That means a lot to me.” The personal service constantly provided at Sellar & Sellar has played a large part in its longevity, with long-lasting ties built and retained over many years. Amy Fabling

Mandy Emerson

A female perspective on car buying

A taste of the coast from in town

Amy’s the first to admit she didn’t know a lot about cars when she started her new job as a sales consultant at Eastwood Motor Group. However, she’s learned a lot very quickly and is selling cars. “I’ve exceeded all my targets in just a few months,” she says proudly. “I’m giving the boys a run for their money.” She is one of a sales team of four, the only female in fact. The second day on the job, she sold her first car – a bright yellow Kia Rio to a couple. “It was so exciting. It’s so much more than just selling a vehicle. You find out what type people want; assess their lifestyle; what they will be using it for, and of course, the budget. There’s so many variations.” “Many people immediately say they don’t want any ‘gadgets’ but when they learn what is available, they often change their mind.” For Amy, she has promised herself a car with heated seats. “Such a treat in the winter.” It’s her love of people, her personable nature and genuine desire to help people with one of the largest purchases in life

that has had her head to the vehicle industry. It was a natural move from banking where she had worked for 20 years in Upper Hutt and Masterton. Born in Lower Hutt, she moved with her mother to Carterton who re-married and the blended family were raised at Ahiaruhe. She then moved to Wellington. Five years ago with husband, Jason and daughters Maddie and Emma-May, Amy returned to Wairarapa and has re-fallen in love with the region, living in Masterton. Eastwood Motor Group is the home of four main brands Hyundai, Isuzu Utes, Kia and Suzuki. Call in and see Amy and experience the women’s touch in car selling.

Fulltime artist, and 02 Dive N Surf store co-owner with husband Tim, Mandy Emerson sure has a busy work load. She’s been a mixed media artist for the past 15 years, selling her work in many parts of the world with representation in New Zealand and Australia. It has meant her paint brushes are always in full swing, creating new works, and she is still completely loving it! “I can’t ever give up my painting, it’s in my blood, my creativity side shines bright, from the time I get up, till the time I hit the pillow, although sometimes I have been known to get back up in the night and head back to my studio, as the creativity is bursting”. Mandy and Tim purchased the 02 Surf N Dive Store on northern Queen Street Masterton in 2017 and have been evolving the business ever since. It is the stockist of all freediving and scuba diving gear but now much, much more. With the surf side clothing labels introduced, it was music to Mandy’s ears. She has always had an interest in fashion and with loads of previous experience in her younger years, it gave her the green light to stock surf clothing labels, not generally available in Masterton. These include Rip Curl, O’Neill, Hurley, Amuse Society, Globe, Stussy, Obey and New Zealand’s own ‘Just Another Fisherman’ label. 02 Dive N Surf also stocks new and

second hand surf boards, surf suits, and all accessories related to surfing, and of course the great Oakley and Bolle Sunglasses. Learning all about the dive side of the business was a fresh challenge for Mandy. Tim has dived the Wairarapa Coast for the past 29 years, so he has a great understanding of the gear. Her product knowledge was limited, so she listened and learnt from Tim and the customers. Tim’s knowledge is an absolute asset to their business. “I have learnt so much from him and it has definitely made me more confident to give the right advice to our customers. I’m now up to speed, right down to the clip needed to replace a faulty fin strap,” she laughs. With on-line shopping becoming a fast and easy way to shop, Mandy believes you combat this with fabulous customer service, intense product knowledge, and good quality equipment. Being able to try on wetsuits, dive gear and clothing is a paramount asset, which is obviously not possible with online shopping. Afterpay is being introduced to the store allowing customers to pay off their goods while taking them home on the day of purchase. If you haven’t already been in to see us ... Fitness Plus Health Centre Ltd Wendy Mouldey HEALTH AND LIFE COACH

Finding health and wellness in an idyllic rural setting Wendy Mouldey calls all unwell people and those wanting to get fit, to her unique health and wellness centre, hoping they will pause, exercise, rest and allow their body to strengthen and heal. She helps many clients, from those wanting to maintain their health and fitness, to stroke victims, to those with heart conditions, thyroid issues, unusual immune systems, or even sleep problems.

Fitness Plus entrance. It’s easy to feel rested at Wendy’s health and wellness centre tucked into the foothills at the end of Parker’s Road, West Taratahi. She’s been offering her fitness and health services in the Wairarapa since the early 90’s, initially out of her Carterton gym, and now in a private and tranquil setting, at Parker’s Road. When you arrive at the road’s end, and you head down the perfectly manicured gravel road lined with rustic wooden fences, Wendy’s health and wellness centre opens up in front of you. It’s a timeless, Kiwi, wooden barn which initially acted as Wendy and husband Gordon’s home for a few years while they built up their electrical business, then later came the main house build. Over the past two years, Wendy has progressively created her own space and although still in its final stages of completion, people now flock to her Wellness centre.

Exercise Therapy room.

There’s an exercise and rehabilitation room, fully equipped gymnasium, infra-red / red light therapy sauna, and the ultimate for those seeking healing – an indoor hydrotherapy pool, complete with a hydraulic treadmill. A current can be created too so people wishing to do swimming exercise, can do so on the spot. Wendy is clear that the pool is not treated with chlorine but ozone and silver; “Chlorine is so toxic and drying and effects dysfunctional immune systems terribly,” she points out.

Rosewood Funeral Home

Lynette Dew

A plentiful life Lynette Dew expresses the feeling of extreme privilege at being able to care for the family of someone who has died. Lynette has been in partnership as a funeral director with her husband, David, at Rosewood Funeral Home for the past 22 years. Supported by a staff of three, her role is vast and varied, from arranging funerals, assisting at funerals, running the sound desk and AV system, to organising catering and follow up work after the funeral, such as memorial books and photographs. She also looks after the administration and accounts for the business. “For me the privilege of being trusted by families to arrange the funeral and create an event which will portray that person’s life is all important. From preparing the service sheets, getting the music just right at the funeral, ensuring the audio-visual plays, the live-stream is working, and that the whole experience is one of comfort.” She enjoys working alongside people, and delights in giving ideas to personalise funerals. In recent years, personalising funerals has meant having a ‘can do’ attitude to the requests that families make and also offering suggestions to families as to how they can best honour the life of their

loved one. Having grown up in Wellington, Lynette began working life as a primary school teacher coming to Masterton in 1982 as a first year teacher. In 1996 Lynette and her husband David decided to set up their own business, David Dew Funeral Services, now called Rosewood Funeral Home. She and David have five adult children and seven grandchildren. “These days, we often have some of our children and their children back home for periods. There is a revolving procession of boomerang kids.” Lynette enjoys singing and is a member of the Wairarapa Singers and a smaller group of eight women called the ‘Song Birds’ which offers music at events, including citizenship ceremonies, service clubs and rest homes. Rosewood is the practice base for both groups. Lynette has recently joined the Hubb. “I am enjoying getting fitter and healthier”. She’s also learning Te Reo at UCOL and is an active member of the Masterton Baptist Church. There’s no stopping this woman.

Wild Grey Fox is a local brand born in Greytown, created by two mums who were at home with young children. Over coffee, friends Nikki McIvor and Marina Adams dreamed up what has become a New Zealand eco-brand. Formerly known as Wild Honey Art, the name was changed due to confusion with the manuka honey industry. “In short, we got tired of being asked for honey!” laughs Nikki. Wild Grey Fox puts Nikki’s drawings of wildlife onto gifts and homeware. “It’s really important to us that our products are made ethically and with care.” says Marina. “We want to make products that are good for everyone – from start to finish.” As a result, Wild Grey Fox have partnered with a factory in India that processes only organic cotton. Not only is the factory fairtrade certified, but all employees are shareholders, which means that profits contribute directly to their well-being. “That’s something we can feel really good about.” Continuing with the ethically-made theme, all of Wild Grey Fox’s printing is done in New Zealand. “If we don’t support local craftspeople, then we won’t have locally produced, beautiful things that reflect our region.” In 2017, Nikki and Marina opened the Wild Grey Fox Store at 81 Main Street in Greytown. Situated in the courtyard to the north of the French Baker, under a silk tree, the setting perfectly suits their back-to-nature ethos.

Gibson Sheat Lawyers

Some of the team at Gibson Sheat in Masterton. From left are: Michelle Williams (Associate); Julie Millar (Partner); Lisa Searle (Legal Executive); Alex Fink (Graduate); Donna Watt (Lawyer); Meghan Batt (Lawyer) and Rebecca Edgecombe (Legal Executive).

The legal profession’s female influence Gibson Sheat Lawyers have offices in Lower Hutt, Wellington and Masterton. They are a firm who pride themselves on being down to earth with “No jargon, just practical advice” being one of their key mottos. Across the three offices, there are 45 solicitors and legal executives, with an impressive range of easily accessible specialist knowledge. Women make up a large number of those employed. In the Masterton office there are 15 staff, 13 of them women, including Julie Millar (partner) and Michelle Williams (associate). Julie Millar – Julie has been a partner for three years and previously was a director of Logan Gold Walsh. Julie works in general practice but for the last three years has chosen to specialise in property issues, including relationship property, rural subdivisions, rural succession matters and sale and purchase agreements. She acts for a number of larger farming clients from the acquisition of land to the formation of the structures these clients need to operate their businesses. Julie works hard to make sure her relationship property clients are well served. It is important to Julie that people going through this difficult process are treated with empathy and given a clear idea of their entitlements.

Julie’s specialist practice sees her working in the Lower Hutt and Wellington offices at least once a week to assist these clients. Michelle Williams – Michelle is an associate lawyer, having joined Gibson Sheat two years ago. Michelle moved from the busy life of a city lawyer to live in Martinborough, which she relishes. She is proud of her Wairarapa lineage with both sides of parents going back to great great grandparents in the region. Michelle believes sound legal help is all about forming relationships with clients and their families. This is especially important in the areas she specialises in, which are trusts, property and asset protection. Michelle says her clients love her uncomplicated, honest and understanding approach to the way she looks after their affairs. Rebecca Edgecombe – Rebecca is a registered legal executive who helps people deal with affairs after a family member has died. Rebecca feels it is a privilege helping people who are often grieving and vulnerable. Prior to working for Gibson Sheat, she was in Auckland doing similar work until the lure of Wairarapa caught her. Rebecca’s favourite past time is marathon running and she has run in excess of 100

marathons including London, New York and Boston.

scary’ and she enjoys unlocking the legal system for people to understand themselves.

Donna Watt – Donna started her law degree in 2009, juggling children and part-time work before being admitted to the bar in 2015.

Meghan Batt – Meghan qualified as a lawyer in September 2018. She was born in Nelson, but grew up mainly in Wellington, eventually moving to Auckland to study a Diploma in Music and Events Management.

She has a special interest in employment law and enjoys being able to problem solve for people, who are often at a low point in their life. She won the Cullen Employment Law Prize for top employment law student in her final year. Donna describes herself as approachable as well as a good listener who provides practical, easy to understand advice. Alex Fink – Alex is a graduate who will be admitted to the Bar in June this year. She grew up in Lower Hutt, graduated from Victoria University with an LLB and BA and has been in Wairarapa for the past two years, living on a farm in Pirinoa with her husband. Alex volunteered on farms in Nepal and England and for an NGO in Cambodia. She chose law because she wanted to help people, initially thinking she would work in international relations, but soon realised there were people close to home who also needed legal help.

Meghan began her Law degree in Auckland and completed it in Wellington, graduating from Victoria University. Meghan loves being able to help people who are in difficult situations and providing them with peace of mind. Lisa Searle – Lisa joined the firm in 2013 and works as a Registered Legal Executive. Lisa started her career at Land Information New Zealand then headed overseas. On her return to New Zealand, she continued at LINZ,. During this time she developed an in-depth knowledge of land titles and registration, and Treaty of Waitangi settlement processes. This background has proven valuable in her current role, which predominantly involves residential and rural conveyancing. Her real specialty is subdivisions, where her previous experience means Lisa has a level of expert knowledge that is a huge asset to Gibson Sheat.

Alex believes the legal world can be ‘big and

Community pharmacy a unique jewel in Greytown Michelle Allen and her team at Greytown Pharmacy are making history. In a region that once was dotted with sole operator pharmacies, Michelle‘s Greytown Pharmacy is the only one left in Wairarapa which is independently owned. Michelle and her husband Tony, purchased the business nearly 30 years ago after she qualified as a pharmacist and has loved serving the health needs of the Greytown community and raising her family there. Supporting Michelle, are two dispensary technicians, Stacey Olszewski and Tracey Devenish. On the retail side is Robyn Tate, long experienced in pharmacy, who has been with the Greytown Pharmacy 12 years, and Leanne Percy – better known as ‘Pickle’, who has been there 20 years.

Michelle says the business of pharmacy has become much more bureaucratic in recent times with huge amounts of paperwork but she understands the reason for the need for accountability in an increasing complex medical world. Along with all that complexity, there’s still personal services such as prescription home delivery and the welcoming smiles at the pharmacy. “Greytown is a great community and I’ve seen so much change in my time here. I especially like the increasing number of young families coming to town. It gives a new energy,” says Michelle who hurries back to the dispensary, where a line of prescriptions are waiting to be checked.

The long serving, loyal staff creates a happy, professional and comfortable workplace says Michelle. She finds the customers enjoy the feeling of familiarity. Michelle had initially considered nursing as a profession but is pleased she chose pharmacy. The adage that a pharmacist is “the health professional you see most often” is very true. “People feel a sense of comfort to be able to call and ask about their health issues.”

Lynette Finn

MASSAGE THERAPIST AND EFT PRACTITIONER

Helping people move through life with freedom and ease Now in her 11th year of practice, Massage Therapist and EFT Practitioner Lynette Finn is as enthusiastic today about what she does, as when she started. “One of the best things about my work is that everyone is different, so you never stop learning and you never get bored.” A graduate and former tutor at the New Zealand College of Massage, Lynette runs a busy practice from her Villa Street clinic and has built a diverse and loyal client base. “It’s always nice when I get referrals from existing clients and other health professionals because it means I’m getting it right.” Over the years Lynette has added a range of disciplines to her therapeutic practice including; Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), Dry Needling and Reiki, to name a few. This enables her to work with people in different ways and tailor each session according to the needs of the individual. “I’m not a great believer in the ‘one size fits all’ philosophy. People respond differently to different techniques and understanding this is key to achieving

good results.” Most recently Lynette has completed accreditation as a Certified EFT Practitioner (Emotional Freedom Techniques / Tapping). A proven stress management technique for the mind and body, EFT can be used to address a range of challenges from food cravings and weight loss, exam anxiety to phobias and quitting smoking, to name just a few. As Lynette explains; “tapping on specific acupressure points calms the stress centre in the brain”. By focusing on an issue or behaviour you want to change while tapping, you decrease the emotional intensity that keeps you attached to the issue or behaviour. It is very effective and I’m really excited to be able to include this in my practice. Lynette also offers a range of affordability options, giving clients choice in their therapy. She sees a growing desire in people to take a preventative approach to their health care and enjoys being a part of that journey. “I like working with people,” she says, “not just on people. It’s a privilege to do what I do and extremely rewarding.”

Carterton District Council

Putting care into everything we do Caring for the community is a key part of Carterton District Council’s day-to-day operations which are led by the council’s first woman Chief Executive, Jane Davis. Jane joined the council in 2015 after working for Greater Wellington Regional Council as its General Manager Strategy and Community Engagement. Jane’s approach to her role has been to empower others to make decisions which will positively impact the community they work in. “We have a strong team here at the council who aren’t afraid to make difficult decisions, while always thinking about meeting the needs of our residents,” she says. Carterton District Council has 26 women in roles varying from administrative, to operations and management roles. “All our women bring with them a unique set of skills and talents, but they all share

one thing – the care and compassion they apply to their work.” Whether working to organise community events, dealing with residents at our various frontline desks, or performing administrative support in our operations yard, the women at Carterton District Council find a way to give back to their Carterton community. Democratic Services Co-ordinator Casey Spencer said giving back can be as simple as a kind gesture. “Everyone has their own daily battles, so a friendly smile; compliment; a shared joke or offering to help, can have such as positive impact – why wouldn’t you?” Community Development Co-ordinator Gerry Brooking works with community groups by taking a community-led approach as opposed to a council-led approach.

“For me, showing kindness means empowering people to come up with their own ideas, rather than me telling them what to do. Most of the time I could just as easily tell them what they should be doing but it’s more about providing support, so they can discover the best course of action to reach their own goals and dreams.” Animal Management Officer Karen Schischka has one of the more challenging roles at the council but this doesn’t stop her from finding a way to provide acts of kindness every day. “Some of the dogs I impound get a better quality of life while in the pound than they previously had. I ensure they get shelter, a well-balanced diet along with some treats, a clean environment, exercise with play as well as being patted and spoken to with kindness.

This also brings joy to the Carterton families who are able to adopt the dogs which are able to be rehomed.” The council staff are always keen to get involved too with initiatives and causes which give back to the Carterton community and show solidarity and support to those in need. This includes getting involved with events such as ‘Relay for Life’, collecting for the annual ‘Food Bank food drive’ and supporting causes such as ‘Gumboot Friday’ and breast cancer awareness month. With Jane’s contract having been extended for another two years, she is looking forward to continuing to work with a great team of women who are always looking for new ways to put care into their cool little community.

Olivia’s love for all things beautiful

How to turn home owning dreams into reality

Olivia has always had a love for all things beautiful. From an early age she was interested in anything art & creative inspired. Attending college in Wairarapa, St Matthews Collegiate, the art and design subjects were a strong passion leading onto Olivia studying Fashion Design in Wellington, at Massey University & Auckland, at Whitecliffe College of Art & Design. After a couple of years studying, then working in an Auckland bridal boutique, taking every opportunity to learn more, it was time to start the dream.

If you want to buy a home and are looking at the rising real estate market nervously don’t despair! When Mortgage Adviser Nikki Cox is involved, there is always hope. The first thing to do is meet with Nikki to work out how you can get on the property ladder, either at the Home Loan office in Perry Street, Masterton, or somewhere more convenient.

Founded in May 2017, Hello Romeo Bridal Boutique was built to provide an experience not to be forgotten, all whilst finding the perfect wedding dress!

Nikki is happy to get clients pre-approval so they know what they can afford and are confident putting an offer in on a property before they start looking.

Hello Romeo is located in the hub of Wairarapa’s wedding destination, Kitchener Street, Martinborough.

Nikki’s knowledge of the mortgage and finance industry goes right back to her childhood. She grew up in rural Hampshire in England where her father ran his own mortgage and investment broking service - “I grew up talking finance at the dinner table!”

Home to four leading international designers, all of the gowns are available to be ordered in a range of colour hues and sizes. Once the bride has chosen her dream dress, the gowns are made and then delivered to the boutique, where Olivia tailors the gowns to fit, and often creates custom changes with the bride. As well as gorgeous gowns, Olivia has an exquisite range of jewellery, hair accessories and veils to finish the brides look during final fittings. The majority of brides that shop in Olivia’s boutique come from Wellington, Manawatu & Hawkes Bay, and even some travelling from as far north as Auckland, right down to Queenstown. Hello Romeo has quickly become a destination bridal boutique that is worth the trip. Nikki worked for her father for eight years until her equestrian interests took over, which saw her competing in England and Europe. Later she came to New Zealand to train

horses and riders, falling for the Kiwi way of life ... “I fell in love with the country, and Wairarapa in particular. Home & Interiors Show

Helloworld

Christine Neil OWNER

Out to impress home owners & design lovers Christine Neil has been interested in home and interior products all her working life. This has led her to owning the Home and Interiors Show for the past five years and more recently bringing Home & Interiors to Wairarapa last year at the Carterton Events Centre.

was a natural progression from this work. Allied to the shows, Christine also owns a market research company which produces the magazine ‘The Home Guide’, full of inspiring ideas for home decoration and design.

“The architecturally-stunning Events Centre provides a modern-day setting with an air of history in natural surroundings,” enthuses Christine. She’s calling for good exhibitors to make this year’s event 9, 10 November a dynamic and exciting event. “It’s an ideal place where local business can showcase their expertise, share their knowledge and attract business as well as do valuable networking.” Christine believes The Home & Interiors Show is essential for all home owners too, looking for inspiration and advice. “You will find the best products, solutions, and design ideas with the opportunity to talk one-on-one with the experts in their field.”

beautiful scenery and Africa for its wildlife.

Call in to the all-woman team of seven who run the Helloworld travel agency in Masterton and chances are one of them will have likely been where you choose.

The team like to promote themselves as a ‘one-stop-shop’ where someone can be taken through the entire process of going on a trip – advice on visa, insurance, accommodation, car rental and package tours.

They spied their dream house north of Masterton over five and a half years ago. Then deciding two years ago to definitely move south, they remembered that house and left a note in the letterbox asking the owners if they were interested in selling. Coincidently, they were contemplating just that, and so the deal was done.

Some have specialty areas like Ksenia Ptilidi, who is fluent in Russian. Shari Feast concentrates on weddings and group bookings. She gleans from her personal experience of being married in Niue last year. Amanda McGruddy is a cruise expert – a service booming in popularity, to the extent that cruises are currently a large part of their business. Donna Coombes is the agency’s accounts executive and Meredith Gillies manages the Helloworld agency in Greytown.

So, if you are thinking about renovating, building, or moving house, or if you are one of Wairarapa’s fantastic building or renovation industry suppliers, the Carterton Events Centre early November is where you all should be.

When Wairarapa Home Show runs in November, Christine will be fresh back brimming with new ideas, from the Grand Designs Home Show in London. In the past she has run up to 11 shows a year, now she does around eight with Wellington and Wairarapa where she personally has the main input.

However, it was in strategic marketing and advertising of property that Christine found her niche. She began constructing 3-D models of houses when she discovered people were not be able to 3-dimensionalise in their minds from a flat drawing. She wrote training programmes for professional property presenters and spoke to thousands of home owners at seminars around New Zealand. The facilitation of home shows

Finding her own home in Wairarapa has an interesting story. She and husband, Bill lived in Waikato in an 1899 villa, loving the style with its wrap-around verandas. Both their children have moved to live in Wairarapa and they were increasingly visiting the region.

Christine can’t believe their luck to be living in Wairarapa. “The people are so welcoming, there’s so much vibrancy here in the housing market, and the surroundings are just beautiful.”

Christine has a wealth of experience in new build and home renovations starting out in her uncle’s company, Neil Housing in Auckland. “I was the colour consultant with just six colours to choose from,” she laughs.

Laura Dawes and Leigh Feast

Headed by Directors Laura Dawes and Leigh Feast, the team are all well-travelled.

Laura and Leigh purchased the business 11 years ago. In 2012 they opened a branch in Greytown at 124 Main Street, and this is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

They also offer Fly Buys rewards, and are the only travel agency in Wairarapa to do so. And, if anything goes wrong while travelling, Laura and Leigh are always at the end of the phone to guide them. It’s the personal service and the relationship building which makes people return again and again. Helloworld value their repeat clientele and appreciate their loyalty which has made the business such a success story.

Laura’s experience in the travel industry goes back more than 30 years when she started with AA Travel and Air New Zealand in Wellington. Leigh has worked in the industry for 23 years. When asked what parts of the world they love, Laura lists Tahiti, Japan and South America. Leigh loves Canada for its

Bell St Early Learning Centres

Ana Gudsell & Lisa Pugh OWNERS

Family atmosphere creates a feeling of home for Bell St children The Bell St Early Learning Centres in Featherston and Martinborough offer high quality care and education for South Wairarapa children and their parents.

in Wairarapa, she is also well known in hockey circles and has recently represented the New Zealand Master’s team.

In June this year, the Featherston centre in Bell Street, celebrates its 10th birthday, while Martinborough opened four years ago, at 14 Kitchener Street.

Ana established the Featherston centre in 2009 and met up with Lisa, when she was completing her early childhood training. The two found they clicked immediately, worked well together, and shared similar teaching philosophies.

Ana Gudsell and Lisa Pugh, along with their husbands, are the centres’ owners. While there is some cross over, Ana bases herself in Martinborough and Lisa at Featherston. They are both supported by highly-qualified teams, some of whom have been with the pair since the centres opened. “We really want to create a family atmosphere in the houses we’ve chosen,” says Lisa, who along with Ana, is proud of the centres they have created with both having sheltered covered verandas, large sandpits, play equipment, trees, and a definite feeling of ‘home.’ Ana did her early childhood qualification at Victoria University. Born and bred

Lisa is originally from Porirua. She was drawn to South Wairarapa with her husband and together with their children they moved to Featherston 17 years ago and love the lifestyle Wairarapa has to offer. Ana and Lisa are proud of the ‘home away from home’ atmosphere they have created, along with the close relationships they create with children and their families. Their centres are small with a maximum of 23 children a day with high staff ratios. There is a range of parents using their centres too – from commuters travelling to Wellington, to farming families from within the wider community.

DIRECTOR

A juggler with an international business flavour Sharon Garrett is a busy lady and one who loves juggling projects. She has been Acting General Manager and Spa Manager of Brackenridge Country Retreat, outside Martinborough, for the past few months, while running her own marketing business. Relatively new to Wairarapa, Sharon most recently resided in the Middle East where her management skills were honed and the ability to manage multiple projects, at the same time, was developed into a fine art. A self-confessed citizen of the world, Australian-born Sharon has spent the greater part of her adult life abroad. She is well travelled having ticked off her first 50 countries before she was 30 and now dreams of travelling to space, having run Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic UAE office during her time in the Middle East. Her career started in banking in Australia, then London, where she was a member of the team to do the largest management buy-out of the 90s for British Petroleum’s Consumer Products Division. She returned to Australia’s unique and wild Northern Territory where her passion for the tourism sector was ignited. Sharon has also worked in Hong Kong and most recently the United Arab Emirates, where she remained for 16-½ years.

“I asked my Kiwi born husband to follow me to Abu Dhabi, and he did so without complaint. But, it was based on the agreement, that he would choose our next destination, and that unfolded as New Zealand.”

“I absolutely loved working with Vicki Chow. It was a baptism of fire into New Zealand business with the sheer scope of the Chow family’s interests across various industries from home building to banks; clubs; law firms and property. It was fantastic.” But, Sharon says mismatched values, combined with the Group’s

move to Auckland, was the catalyst to starting her own consultancy, Wairarapa Marketing to offer marketing and PR support to local businesses. “I’m proud to work in Wairarapa and have met some truly inspirational women. Some young and starting out while others are older turning a passion or hobby into a thriving business. There’s so much entrepreneurial activity out there.” “I still had some clients dotted around the world from my business in the Middle East, and I contracted some local businesses and not-for-profits. Then came the opportunity at Brackenridge Spa.” During her international hotel career, she had senior level experience driving sales, marketing and revenue but had little in-operation experience and saw the position as Spa Manager as the perfect new hands-on challenge. Over time, and with the support of a great team she grew the business and started to make some real impact. Later due to unforeseen circumstances for a colleague, she was invited to take on the role of Acting General Manager. “I was very flattered. It wasn’t the first time in my career that I had been given this level of responsibility. I am very proud to have been asked to be the caretaker and work with some really terrific people,” Women in business roles are of intense interest to Sharon. She abhors hearing women being turned down due to gender, or women talking themselves down. She keenly promotes workforce equality and is now exploring Board positions where she can give back to business with a wealth of experience gained across multiple industries and sport. Wairarapa Marketing provides content creation, storytelling, marketing strategies, social media and general no-nonsense guidance to businesses who want easy options to market their business and drive sales. www.wairarapamarketing.com Phone Sharon on 027 550 5486 sharon@wairarapamarketing.com

Carterton Pharmacy

Mary Pope & Sharynne Fordyce

Offering health care in a myriad of ways and place Pharmacist Sharynne Fordyce has always been interested in health. Pharmacy appealed to her because it facilitated that important liaison between the doctor and patient. She qualified in the early 1980s and still finds people want simple, clear health information and someone showing they care. “Many people get confused over their medication, and for all the technological advances, visiting the pharmacy and talking to a medical professional, is still a popular choice.” Sharynne’s husband, David Holt is also a pharmacist and colleague in the Carterton pharmacy. They live in Masterton where they have raised three children. Sharynne is enjoying working alongside Mary Pope, a qualified pharmacy technician and registered nurse. Mary’s RN qualification has been a great advantage, enhancing the pharmacy services, and the two women are keen to create information events, over and above their traditional pharmacy role. Their first foray into this, was last year with the Women’s Expo at the Carterton Events Centre, showcasing what services for women were available in Carterton, including health services. Sharynne and David purchased the former Chisholm’s Pharmacy in Carterton which merged with Stubbs’ Pharmacy in

2002 and became Carterton Pharmacy. Mary returned to the Carterton Pharmacy two years ago after working in several of pharmacies in Wairarapa, Ian Graham’s Pharmacy, Fuller’s Chemist, Stubbs’ Pharmacy and Masterton Medical Pharmacy. Buoyed by her daughter’s encouragement that she could do further study, Mary completed a Bachelor of Nursing at UCOL in Masterton and a post graduate course in Ethics at Massey University. With an interest in the health and well-being of the elderly she jumped at the chance to work at Carterton Pharmacy as the resident nurse and pharmacy technician. Mary is an authorised vaccinator which enables her to work alongside vaccinating pharmacists offering a variety of vaccines including the influenza vaccine. Offering vaccinations at workplaces has been of special interest to both Sharynne and Mary as a proactive way of providing a health service within the Wairarapa community. They also offer blood pressure checks, wound care, diabetes monitoring and respiratory care. Mary is contracted out to the Carterton Medical Centre and also moves within the other pharmacies owned by Pharmacy Solutions – Life Pharmacy Masterton, Carterton Pharmacy, Lang’s Pharmacy Featherston and at Mana Pharmacy in Porirua

Liz Rikiti Photography

Liz Rikiti

PHOTOGRAPHER

Creating lasting memories Sometimes you are so caught up in those absolute precious times in your life that you can forget to record it. This is when photographer Liz Rikiti steps in and makes sure that special moment is captured. She specialises in photographing the maternity stages, the birth process, newborn babies and the children and families which surround them. Initially she was to concentrate on purely newborns but she says they always came along with parents and often siblings and before she knew it, there were family photos being taken too. Liz is a self-taught photographer with a gifted eye which has been recognised by many, to the extent that she is in high demand. With pregnancy photos, she works with the mother through all the stages, beginning with a pre-consultation to get to know her well. Photographing a newborn can take between four to six hours. There’s waiting for the baby to sleep, comforting with feeding, then nappy changing, and so the parents are catered for with food and comfort. “It’s all an exercise in patience,” says Liz, who knows all about the art of rearing children. She has six of her own aged from 15 years to 10 months old. Liz and husband Wi moved from Rotorua to Wairarapa when her father was relocating and restoring a house on family land. She was familiar with these sorts of projects which her father often did. She and Wi are currently creating a collection of buildings themselves, including their

house and the photography studio, on land in Norfolk Road. As a teenager, Liz spent many holidays in Wairarapa. Photography has always been an interest. Portraying babies became a passion when photographing her tiny daughter Zoe whose birth weight was just 5lbs 4oz. She is now eight years old. “Photographing her was so precious and I began doing more and more of my children and then other people’s children.” As the demand grew for her work, she called on the help of an accountant and got serious about her photography as a business. Liz used to do wedding photography but has found she could not commit to the events with her family commitments. “Once you have photographed a wedding, it can take up to a month of editing, and it’s time I just don’t have at present.” Belinda Pratt photography has taken on that role for her. One service Liz does not want to relinquish however, is the photographing of stillborn babies. This deeply personal service for grieving families is close to Liz’s heart. She does this free of charge. “It’s such a humbling feeling that gives grieving families a chance to have their own special moment, before letting go. These memories help in the healing process.” She has direct links with the maternity unit at Wairarapa Hospital and with midwives around the region and will do her best to respond as quickly as possible.

Provincial Insurance Brokers

Providing Total Insurance Solutions In today’s market where automation of product and service is becoming the norm, it is good to know that there is still one place where you get personal service when you buy insurance. Established in 1993 by Director Mike Weeks, Provincial Insurance was founded on the principle of building strong relationships between the broker and their client. So as not to compromise the level of personal service offered as the business has grown, Provincial now has six insurance brokers to meet this demand – Briar Toop, Cheryl Morris, Jo Scott, Kris Towgood, Rosie Rutene and Sheryl Rooderkirk. Each broker has their own specialist area of expertise in Rural, Commercial, Domestic, Life/Health and Travel with clients assigned to the broker who best matches their requirements. The broker will help throughout the year with enquiries and will review the client’s insurance annually providing further opportunity for the broker to fully understand their insurance needs. Being pro-active to keep the premiums competitive and getting the right insurance is part of the review process. Reviews are performed at the Chapel Street Office or at the clients business, farm or home or over the phone for those clients that are pressed for time. Provincial Insurance is part of the Steadfast Group – the largest insurance broker network in Australasia. This gives the brokers access to multiple insurance companies, a broad range of products, competitive pricing and quality of service. With so many different products available, the brokers need to understand what sort of insurance their clients need to survive a loss. The requirements of a farm are going to be hugely different to those of a manufacturing plant. Even though a client may have one point of contact, the brokers work with each other in a close environment sharing their industry knowledge and experience with each other, to provide the best level of service available. With the New Zealand insurance market being quite small, it is of significant benefit that Provincial Insurance has access to wholesale insurance companies that don’t deal directly with the public. Provincial can source insurance from international markets to find cover for hard to place risks. Underwriters from all of New Zealand’s insurance companies visit Wairarapa

process and negotiates on their behalf. Many people do not understand the claims process and are unsure of what they are entitled to.

She has a good relationship with local repairers which often helps to speed up and smooth the claims process.

One of the outstanding features of Provincial Insurance is that it has its own in-house Claims Manager – Su Palenski.

Having 25 years’ experience in the insurance industry and then the last 10 years in managing claims, Su can quickly say if a claim is likely to be successful and will often get one accepted that was initially declined.

People who deal with an insurance company direct, end up using an 0800 number and talking to a long line of strangers, whereas Su works with the client through the whole

Through the Steadfast Group, Su also has access to its claims technical and legal team that can be called upon for tricky or unusual claims.

With 90% of Provincial’s team made up of women, the other staff members are Gabrielle Roche, Jude Powell and Paige Walters who support the brokers, Administration Manager Jan Henson and Operations Manager Teresa Gordon-Wiles.

This allows the insurer to get a better idea of who they are insuring and this can lead to improved pricing.
