Introduction The Wings Over Wairarapa Air Festival 2017 is our 10th airshow and, this year, features the talented team from AeroSPARX and GliderFX. They have come to demonstrate precision flying, and their night show will be a first for New Zealand. As well our air show will feature rare aircraft from WWI, alongside some of the classics from WWII. While these historic aircraft are always crowd favorites, there will also be dynamic displays of contemporary aircraft, agricultural, aerobatic and military aviation - giving a glimpse of the future of aviation here in New Zealand. Wings has always recognised the pilots of the world wars. With WWII now 75 years behind us, the

number of living veterans sadly gets less each year, but we welcome those who can attend. The powerful WWII fighters on display keep memories alive and honour those who fought for our freedom.

entertainment for families too. On the ground there will be mock battles, a children’s zone, contemporary and vintage military vehicles, static displays, trade sites and food & wine.

Yet our Air Festival also celebrates the skill and determination of the flyers who make up the aviation industry today.

On behalf of the team who put this year’s air show together, I welcome you all, and wish you an enjoyable time at the Wings Over Wairarapa Air Festival 2017.

This year Wings is a complete festival with exciting ‘must see’

Whichever way you look at it, food waste collection should be the next big thing in waste management. We are not saying that just because we have run the first successful food waste collection trial in New Zealand. We are not saying it because we have built a financial model to make it work for everyone. We are saying it because local authorities have a unique mix of pressures and opportunities that should drive food waste collection to the top of the agenda. Relieve pressure on landfills: food accounts for over 40% of the average household waste. Diverting it away from the landfill relieves pressure on land, staff and infrastructure.

Achieve impressive greenhouse mitigation goals: Food waste decomposes in our landfills to produce methane which is a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Internationally, landfills account for about 20% of methane emissions.

Give the agricultural sector a huge boost. Food waste is a valuable resource used in the production of high-quality agricultural compost that can increase crop yields by up to 15%.

AEROBATICS

Formation aerobatics are perhaps the ultimate test of precision ˜ ying. The leader must navigate the whole formation safely while providing the best spectacle to those on the ground, while all others in the formation must hold their position within centimetres, despite turbulence, wind gusts and speed changes.

A tight formation is no place for the faint-hearted! This year Wings Over Wairarapa Air Festival 2017 will include aerobatics from a vintage Tiger Moth, contrasted with a display by the modern MXS and also a formation display by the New Zealand Yak52 team, the Red Stars.

The Great War: The Darkest Year

The Wings Over Wairarapa Air Festival 2017 commemorates the brave men who ˜ ew and fought in the air over the Western Front a century ago. 1917 was the darkest year of the war to date, with the RFC enduring ‘Bloody April’ before Allied troops bogged down at Paschendaele, while U-boats stalked the Allied sealanes. The BE2 series was designed at the Royal Aircraft Factory as a stable, reliable aircraft for observation and reconnaissance. The BE2f is the world’s only flying example.

Designed in 1916, this was Geoffrey de Havilland’s attempt to combine the performance of a ‘tractor’ type, but with the visibility of a ‘pusher’ aircraft. The DH-5 was a poor fighter but proved to be a good ground attack machine.

Combat Aircraft of WWII

The sights and sounds of the aircraft that fought for our freedom between 1939 and 1945 still bring an emotional tear to the eye of the vets who served with them. And the big warbirds invoke passion and enthusiasm in aviators of all ages. Air power proved essential to the Allies’ victory in the Second World War, so this year Wings Over Wairarapa presents six famous types from that great con˜ ict. A maritime patrol and important training aircraft, the unique Avro Anson, is our star for 2017.

Masterton’s Fighter Squadron Wings Over Wairarapa Air Festival 2017 this year pays special tribute to No. 14 Squadron RNZAF with aircraft from throughout the Squadron’s long history on display. But the Squadron’s story starts here at Hood Aerodrome. In the dark days of 1942, after the Japanese conquered Singapore, the RNZAF had to hastily shift its role to home defence. Kiwi ÿghter pilots who had escaped from Singapore were formed into a new squadron, No. 14, and sent to Hood Aerodrome. Equipped with Harvards and P-40 Kittyhawks, the pilots pooled their experiences and worked the new squadron up to operational standard. Peter Norman, then a teenager who later joined the RNZAF himself, wrote an informal history of the squadron in Masterton: ‘With 14 Squadron at Masterton’s Hood Aerodrome’. The aircraft were dispersed around the airÿeld and

often had to be towed along the local roads. The present aero clubroom was used as a ° ight ofÿce, including rooms for the Commanding Ofÿcer, ° ight commanders and pilots, and where parachutes and ° ying gear would be ready for use. “I remember one Sunday tennis party when there was a sudden alarm and all the pilots rushed to the airÿeld and into the air to investigate a ° eet of unknown ships. We were told later, in conÿdence, that the ° eet was

bringing American Marines to Wellington.” There was one death during the ten months the squadron trained at Masterton. Twelve days after he arrived in November, 1942, 20 yearold Sgt/Pilot Arthur Law’s Kittyhawk entered a dive at 2400 metres when breaking away from a dummy attack. Failing to recover, the airplane crashed near Greytown. The Squadron left Masterton in February 1943. Security was tight in wartime but people soon learned the Squadron was on the front line in the Solomons. One of the pilots, Masterton farmer Geoff Fisken, named his aircraft ‘Wairarapa Wildcat’. By the War’s end he was the Commonwealth’s leading ace in the Paciÿc.

While similar to a helicopter in appearance, the autogyro’s rotor must have air ˜ owing through the rotor disc to generate rotation and hence lift. So the autogyro is not the same as a helicopter and must have forward speed to ˜ y. Invented by the Spanish

engineer Juan de la Cierva to create an aircraft that could ˜ y safely at slow speeds, the ÿ rst autogyro was ˜ own in 1923, at Madrid. In ÿ ction, autogyros have been ˜ own by James Bond, Dr Who, Mad Max and Pippi Longstocking!

The Jet Story

It is now 73 years since jet Ăżghters Ăżrst entered service during World War II: the Me262 in Germany and the Gloster Meteor in Britain. Today the jet airliner is the mainstay of civil aviation, and gas turbines also power helicopters, heavy transports and modern trainers, as well as a growing range of private and Warbird aircraft. This year Wings Over Wairarapa Air Festival 2017 features three types of jet, which each have a special relationship to No. 14 Sqn RNZAF.

The DH 112 Venom was developed from the Vampire. No. 14 Sqn flew enoms in action in Malaya, against the communist guerrillas. This Venom, an ex-Swiss aircraft, flies f om Ohakea for its display today.

The RNZAF bought 16 Strikemasters in 1970 for No.14 Sqn as a fighter lead in trainer. They were used until 1991; one ex-RNZAF aircraft appears at this year’s Air Festival.

WINGS OVER WAIRARAPA AIR FESTIVAL 2017

Wings Over Wairarapa Air Festival 2017 will include both historic and contemporary agricultural aircraft; Hood Aerodrome was the base for the first major trials of aerial topdressing, during 1949.

from the Public Works Department, the Departments of Air, Scientific and Industrial Research, Agriculture, and the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council.

In November 1947 a farm at Omarama in Central Otago was the site for the first aerial sowing over steep country in an effort to control erosion. But aerial spreading of fertiliser was a bigger challenge; it would require repeated precise flying, handling of cor osive chemicals and experiments to find the best systems.

The first trials we e at Ohakea in September 1948 with an RNZAF Grumman Avenger. Several flights at an altitude of 120 metres and a track spacing of 28 metres gave satisfactory results with superphosphate, at two hundredweight/acre. Trials followed on a hill-country farm in the Waikato, also with the Grumman Avenger.

The trials had extensive government backing

Len Daniell who then farmed near Alfredton, instigated

37

a large scale official trial in which two RNZAF Avengers would topdress 1000 acres – 13 different properties were involved with sites offering different terrain, soil and pasture. The RNZAF and official contingent arrived at Hood aerodrome on 30 April and on 3 May the trials began. On 5 May aerial topdressing was demonstrated publicly, as 20 tonnes were spread that day over Awatoitoi and Waiere Stations. Over the three weeks of the trials, 125 tonnes of superphosphate and 12 tonnes of lime were spread in 59 hours of flying time (only 26 minutes per flight)

Wairarapa Balloon Festival

13th – 17th April (Easter)

High Kitty, the lucky charm of hot air, is one of two special hot air balloons to come to the 2017 Wairarapa Balloon Festival. The 33 metre tall balloon comes from Dallas, Texas, USA to attend the Festival and she will be joined by 24 other hot air balloons, including a second specialshaped balloon (yet to be announced). Festival Organiser Robyn Cherry-Campbell says

High Kitty will be a huge drawcard. “This enormous special-shaped balloon is going to excite the crowd. High Kitty will certainly get noticed as it will be hard to miss the bright pink 33 metre ‘Manei-neko’ (Japanese for beckoning cat) and she’ll capture the imagination of everyone!”

The 2017 Balloon Festival features a week of balloon lift-offs and family-fun entertainment at various venues throughout the region, including a ‘Dawn Patrol’ when the balloons will lift off in the dark before sunrise. It will feature the popular Night Glow on Friday 14 April at Solway Showgrounds, where tethered balloons light up the night sky and family entertainment is provided.
