A part of Wairarapa’s In the 1880s, the small town of Masterton, population of just over 2000, was gripped in a newspaper war.

he Wairarapa Daily, under the leadership of the redoubtable conservative Joseph Payton, was trying to fight off the fiercely liberal Wairarapa Star, edited by Alexander Hogg, supported by charismatic Masterton Mayor Alfred Renall. Payton, born in Birmingham, England, in 1843, was first off

the mark, starting the town’s first daily newspaper, the Wairarapa Daily, in conjunction with W Roydhouse and E Samuel on November 4, 1878. Payton had previously worked for his father-in-law Richard Wakelin on the Wairarapa Standard in Greytown. Payton held deeply conservative views (some suggested his newspaper was the most conservative in the country) but at the same time worked hard for the community good. He was an avid reader, delighting in the classics, but had a passion for very bad puns. He was renowned for his light touch while writing, but at the same time was capable of being curmudgeonly, even on one occasion complaining about carol singers on Christmas Eve. The Scottish-born Hogg came to Masterton from Dunedin to edit the Star, one of the many newspapers started around the country by the “rag planter” Joseph Ivess. The first issue came off the press on May 21, 1881, the 27 anniversary of the founding of Masterton. With Renall’s help, Hogg and the printer J.J. Smith bought into the paper, and it pushed a liberal line of local and national political concerns. Hogg became the Masterton MP in 1890, and sold his interest in the paper. He served as an MP until 1911, briefly attaining Cabinet ranking.

By then both newspapers had changed their titles. In 1892 Payton had renamed his to the Wairarapa Daily Times, while in 1902 the Star changed to the Wairarapa Age to coincide with switching to morning publication. The Star was produced in a wooden building on the corner of Lincoln Road and Queen Street, named after the paper. The more modern Masterton Lands Trustowned building on the site is still known as the Star Block. The relationship between the rival newspapers had become more cordial. In 1918, when the Star presses were destroyed in a fire, the Daily Times provided press and paper for the Star to continue to publish. The two newspapers amalgamated in 1938, and a modern Art Deco building was erected on the corner of Perry and Chapel streets to house the new flatbed Cossar press. Joseph Payton and Alexander Hogg, both of whom had died, would have found it amusing that the two newspaper once such fierce rivals, should combine and print the first copy of the Wairarapa Times-Age on April Fools’ Day, 1938. The newly-formed and unified newspaper was printed on a Cossar press. Almost immediately it was reporting on the military confrontation when Britain and Germany went to war in 1939. history since the 1880s events such as Edmund Hillary and Tensing’s conquering of Mount Everest for the first time, and the almost simultaneous coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953. Shortly afterwards, the Cossar was replaced by a faster Crabtree press. It continued to report on international and national news, but its focus was on the local. It recorded the devastating effects of the “Wahine” storm in 1968, and the economic impacts of the closure of the Waingawa freezing works in 1989. It also recorded the remarkable rise of Georgina Beyer, from councillor to mayor to Member of Parliament. By 1961 the building had to be expanded and in 1975 two web-offset presses were installed. By the time of its 50th anniversary in 1988 it was employing 160 people. Just prior to that, in 1987, a new publication was started, to provide better and wider regional coverage. Two enthusiastic reporters, Frank Fyfe and Ken Garmonsway, were soon traipsing all over Wairarapa gathering copy for Midweek.

Many years of local ownership ended in 2002, when Wilson and Horton (later APN) bought the newspaper and in 2004 printing shifted to Wanganui. The company formed a lower North Island publishing group in 2010 which included the Wairarapa Times-Age, and APN became NZME in 2014. However, the biggest change came in 2011 when the newspaper switched from evening distribution to morning, and also morphed into a tabloid. Local ownership a ten-year project The new owner of the Wairarapa Times-Age, Andrew Denholm - grew up in Wairarapa and is now living his dream of owning the region’s only daily newspaper.

ringing the Wairarapa Times-Age back to local ownership was a “long term project to say the least”, recalls Andrew Denholm, new owner of the newspaper.

He left his Wellington job to set up fledgling real estate magazines Wairarapa Living and later Wairarapa Country which were both acquired by APN in 2010.

“I approached then owner APN more than 10 years ago and then on and off for the next decade until finally, about this time last year, discussions became a little more real.’

Since then, he has been the General Manager of the Wairarapa Times-Age, seeing it transition to a morning tabloid newspaper – a significant milestone in the history of the paper.

Andrew’s interest in publishing began when he was involved in a number of transactions while working as a “suit” in Wellington.

Born and raised in Wairarapa, Andrew attended East School, Hiona Intermediate and Makoura College.

A chance meeting with the then owner of the National Business Review publisher Barry Colman inspired him to “have a go”.

It’s a big deal and very important to me to support local businesses.” Much has been said of the demise of newspapers but Denholm begs to differ. “Our readership is intelligent. They are thirsty for quality news. As long as we stay relevant to our readers, we will be here for many years to come.” Asked the secret to successful publishing, Denholm proffered a simple answer – “Surround yourself with good people. I’m so lucky to have a team of talented people all working in the very best interest of the paper. It’s the whole team that makes this newspaper so special. “

ndrea first started at the Wairarapa Times-Age in August 2005 as an Advertising Consultant in the Features Department before moving on to the specialist area of Rural Sales Consultant. Andrea left in April 2009 to have her family. After having her two children, Campbell and Libby, there was an opportunity to

step back into the Rural Sales Consultant position in March 2012. In July 2014 Andrea was promoted to Sales Leader where she led the advertising team. In February of this year she was awarded “Sales Leader of the Year – Regional Print” at the prestigious annual NZME Exceptional Awards evening. In July Andrea was promoted to the role of Commercial Manager. Andrea drives the revenue side of the business and oversees the day-to-day running of the Advertising Department, and working closely with the front offic team. As 2IC of the Wairarapa Times-Age Andrea oversees the entire business. Andrea enjoys day-to-day liaising with clients and particularly enjoys working on the promotion of the many wonderful events held in our region. She is excited with the recent change to local ownership which complements the suite of products the Wairarapa TimesAge offers. Out of work Andrea enjoys playing hockey for Gladstone Black and spending time with her children.

e’re pretty lucky to have a daily newspaper in Wairarapa. Most regions our size around the country have lost theirs – or never had one. And once you lose your local paper, it’s pretty hard to get it back. The fact that the Wairarapa Times-Age is now locally owned and independent makes it even more special. It means we’re always going to be more in tune to what matters to our readers, and better positioned to reflect their point of view. Because it’s our point of view, too. Our reporters live in this region, they are part of our communities, just like everyone else in our organisation. We report your stories, because they are our stories. he Front Offic team at the Wairarapa Times-Age consists of Liz McCracken, Anne-Maree Nikolaison, Donna Candy and newest member Jo Priest. Liz is one of the longest serving staff member at the newspaper, joining the Times-Age in January 1980 as a cashier before being promoted to Offic Manager two years later, a position she has kept to this very day, a hugely varied role that includes everything from credit management to customer relations to purchasing offic supplies and the welfare of the staff Donna first started at the Times-Age in 1986 before leaving to raise a young family and returning nine years ago, while Anne-Maree has been with the paper almost continuously for 28 years. Jo previously worked as a cardiac physiology tech at Wairarapa and Christchurch hospitals. The Front Offic is a crucial part of the business as the main interface with the public for everything from selling photographs that appear in the paper, to taking classified advertisements, to starting and stopping subscription, advertising payments and assisting people with all sorts of queries. When not talking face to face the four women are busy on the phone taking advertising requests and helping with inquiries. “We pride ourselves on both our knowledge and our service,” says Liz.

Operations Manager Bevan Wills

oming from Wairarapa meant that when Bevan qualified as a graphic designer he knew that working in Wairarapa was where he wanted to be and was fortunate to get a position at the Wairarapa Times-Age as a graphic designer. In the 13 years since then Bevan has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience and has been awarded APN Designer of the Year in 2012, nominated for the 2015 PANPA Creative Professional of the Year and designed front pages that were awarded NZME’s 2015 Regional Front Page of the year and 2015 Newspaper of the Year. As operations manager Bevan manages IT and oversees all aspects of the production and output of the Wairarapa Times-Age’s publications and website.

ith a combined industry experience of over 120 years there is little this department has not seen before and this experience is put to good use on a daily basis in a department with such a varied workload, working across all of the Wairarapa Times-Age’s regular and special publications and projects in a variety of roles. The operations department is the ‘engine room’ of the Times-Age, working with each department to ensure that each edition gets out on time looking good. Operations talented design team work with the advertising department and clients to create advertisements, special publications, advertising features that reach and appeal to the clients’ target audience. Cathy provides sale support proofing advertisements to our clients. In a similiar fashion the design team also work with the editorial department placing the finished stories and images on the page, designing each story and page in way that provides the most readibility and visual appeal to readers. Production editor Christine collates many of the editorial ‘feature’ and opinion pages ready for creation as well as creating edition layouts that detail where ads and editorial content will go. In additon to all this the operations department produces the weekly Wairarapa Property Magazine, places and arranges all classifieds on pages, deals with a number of print sites, run the Wairarapa Times-Age website and creates e-books, advertising flyers and more as needed
