Welcome I am delighted to welcome readers to the Wairarapa Times-Age Sports Awards. As a locally owned newspaper we take our role of reporting sport seriously. We know how important it is to you that we serve up a healthy dose of sport in every issue. Our sports editor spends as much time crafting stories for the back of the newspaper as the time spent on the front. Sport is incredibly important to us. Six days a week, we recognise and celebrate local sport - the wins, the close calls, and the disappointment of losing.

These Awards are about celebrating the successes of our region’s top sports people over the past year. They also recognise the huge contributions made by sports administrators, clubs, and the hundreds of volunteers who give their time for free to make all this possible. We’ve run these Awards continuously for close to 40 years. Together with the tremendous support of local businesses, we are incredibly proud to celebrate local success on and off the field again this year. Good luck to all the finalists.

Multi-talented Para athlete shares her story impact sport of Para cycling. Kate agreed, although she had low expectations.

Kate Horan is known for her multiple sporting talents, across both Para athletics and Para cycling.

“I didn’t have much confidence riding a bike,” she said.

Just a year after taking up sprinting, the Wellington-based mum-of-three made her Paralympic debut at the Athens 2004 Paralympics but despite setting a world record in the T44 400m she missed out on a medal due to the competition format.

“I spend months training indoors and I would only train outside when there was no wind in perfect weather.” However, she discovered when thrust into heat of competition “all her fears left her” and she thrived. After just a year on the bike she won her first national title at the 2013 NZ Club Road National Championships and has since excelled internationally winning back-to-back medals in the C4 500m Time Trial at the past four editions of the UCI Para Cycling Track World Championships, three silver and one bronze.

Four years later in front of 92,000 spectators at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, Horan – a below the knee amputee – finally mounted the Paralympic podium taking silver in the T44 200m an achievement she describes as “mindblowing”. Unfortunately, a combination of factors, including giving birth to her third child in late 2011 and a serious tendon tear in her hamstring, ruled her out of the reckoning for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The 2018 edition of the World Championships had special significance as she returned to the velodrome in Rio to win a medal after coming so close at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games where she achieved three top 10 placings.

Struggling to cope with the demands of athletics training after years of wear and tear on the body Paralympics New Zealand chiefs advised her to switch to the lower

A night to celebrate sporting excellence in Wairarapa The Wairarapa Times-Age 2018 Sports Awards is about celebrating the successes of our region’s top sports people from 1 March 2017 – 31 March 2018. It also recognises the huge contributions made by sports administrators, clubs, and the hundreds of volunteers who give their time for free to make all this possible. The Awards also acknowledge the lifetime achievements of one particular sports person on the night. They don’t know in advance that they will receive the award.

2017 Supreme Award winner Rebecca Mahoney and Wairarapa Times-Age editor Seamus Boyer

These category winners automatically become finalists for the Supreme Award of the Year. The Award Night wouldn’t be the success it is without the support of its sponsors.

Each sponsor supports the event itself as well as providing the prize for the category they are sponsoring. They host the table of their particular category and also present the prize to the winner.

The team won the competition in 2015 and 2016 and reached the final once again last year, finishing runners-up.

Tania Scott coached the Masterton Intermediate School A-grade hockey team to a local title and also coached the 2017 Wairarapa boys’ under-13 Hatch Cup team.

The squad has enjoyed success at competitions including the NZ Junior Festival, NZ Age Group Champs and Wellington Long Course Champs.

The under-18s went through unbeaten in a dominant campaign, beating Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Nelson and Taranaki. Four players were then named in the Central Districts under-18 side, with Georgia Atkinson continuing to play for the Central Hinds.

Willie also coached the team to the inaugural Conference Cup title. He has now taken on a mentoring role within Wairarapa College and also runs academies in conjunction with Hockey Wairarapa.

At the Hatch Cup her team placed fourth in New Zealand out of 23 teams. Tania brings out the best in her players and helps them to improve their individual performances. She won the Hockey Wairarapa Coach of the Year award for her efforts with MIS and the Hatch Cup group, and also won Maori Coach of the Year.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Sporting grants available The purpose of the Wairarapa Sports Education Trust is to boost sporting potential and participation in Wairarapa to enable people to achieve their full potential and better themselves and the community they live in. To do this, it provides thousands of dollars in grants and scholarships, and is always looking for individuals and groups who might benefit from financial support - they can apply for grants via the Trust’s website or private message via their Facebook page. Their major fundraiser is the annual Wairarapa Sports Education Trust Golf Tournament, this year being held on Friday 22 June at the Masterton Golf Club. Other income comes from donations and grants from groups and organisations.

The Trust is also looking for businesses and organisations who would like to support sporting activity in Wairarapa via the Trust, Co-Chair Blair Stevens says. “We are looking for more grant income. If a business or group would like to support talented Wairarapa Sportspeople then it’s as simple as going to our website http://www.waisportsedtrust.co.nz/gallery and clicking on the ‘donation button’. “Or contact us if they would like to chat about becoming a larger ‘gold’ or ‘silver’ sponsor. The Trust has a range of options to suit everyone’s budget.

The registered charitable trust is managed by a team of volunteers and was established in 2004. The Trust has donated just under $150,000 to various athletes, squads, coaches and officials in more than 20 different sports over the past nine years. It has also brought a number of top sportspeople to Wairarapa to coach and address many athletes and squads. This year the Wairarapa Sports Education Trust will award Scholarships of $500 at the Wairarapa Times-Age Sports Awards, to go towards specific coaching, training, or competition expenses.

“Contributions can be made anonymously, or be publicly acknowledged as a sponsor on our website and Facebook pages - all funds go to local emerging sporting talent!”

MASTERTON

Disabled Sports Personality of the Year Open to any disabled person who has achieved a high standard of participation in any sport.

Stanley Dickson

Jack Lewington

Ben Taylor

Josh Taylor

Stanley Dickson’s disability means he is wheelchair bound, but that has not stopped him participating in volleyball, athletics, cross-country and cricket.

Jack Lewington was identified by Paralympics New Zealand for his swimming ability and was named a member of the PNZ Paralympic Prospects Swimming Squad.

Ben Taylor only recently started learning javelin but won the event at both the CSW Regional Athletics and North Island Secondary Schools Athletics.

Josh Taylor competed at the North Island Secondary Schools Championships last year and broke three junior para records in discus, 200m and 400m.

He was a starring member of the Makoura College first XI cricket team and was an assistant manager for the school’s junior rugby team.

This squad is the entry to the Paralympic performance pathway.

At the North Island championships, Ben broke the record for the event.

In December he moved into the senior category where he got gold in the 200m, silver in the 400m and bronze in discus.

Batting may be difficult, but Stanley played a huge role with the ball, taking four wickets on one occasion.

Jack also competed at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships in six different events. He swam personal best times in every event and won silver medals in the 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke.

Ben’s dedication and enthusiasm ensured he also excelled at shot put and discus, and he has made quite an impression in a short amount of time.

Get It Done Right 26

Senior Sports Personality of the Year Open to anyone who has achieved a high standard of participation in any sport. High standard is defined for Senior Sports as participating in sport at national and/or international events.

Dane Lett

Brock Price

Seth Rance

Faavae Sefo

Dane Lett was recalled into the Black Sticks men’s hockey squad last year for the first time since 2014.

Brock Price dominated the club cricket scene in remarkable fashion with the bat last season.

Fafavae Sefo is a two-time sawing world champion.

His form for Dalefield and Capital had proven too much for the selectors to ignore.

His exploits for both Lansdowne and Wairarapa were quite incredible, and the way he was able to score runs consistently against every team was something you rarely see in the game.

Seth Rance made his debut for the Black Caps in Dublin last year, and has played two oneday internationals and four T20 internationals.

This year, Dane was selected to play at the Commonwealth Games, the first time he had represented his country at a major global tournament. The team eventually went on to claim silver at the Games, losing to Australia in the final. Lett is also player-coach for Dalefield premier men this season.

His 241 propelled Lansdowne to the Bidwill Cup title and scooped him the man of the match award. He was also able to transfer that form on to the representative scene, scoring his maiden century for Wairarapa.

He took three wickets in his second ODI against Bangladesh, and three wickets in one T20 against the West Indies and one T20 against Pakistan. He also continued to show he is one of New Zealand’s premier bowlers with his form for Central Districts, helping them to the Plunket Shield title.

He was a finalist and runner-up in two events in the Sawing World Championships at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show this year. He made the finals in the single-handed saw event – finishing fifth overall – and was runner-up in the doublehanded event. Athletes came from around the world to compete in what Sefo called “the Wimbledon of woodchopping”.

PEOPLES CHOICE People’s Choice Award the public’s chance to have their say

GREYTOWN

The People’s Choice Award was introduced last year to give Wairarapa residents the chance to have a direct say as to who they believe should be recognised for their contribution to local sport as a player, official, coach or administrator. Members

of the public were invited to vote for any of the nominees in the other categories to be the People’s Choice. The Award goes to the nominee with the highest number of votes who hasn’t won any other category on the Awards night.

Janice Leighton - Last year’s winner

The inaugural People’s Choice award went to the finalist receiving the most public votes outside the category winners and a very popular winner there was Janice Leighton, a well-known indoor bowls identity who spends considerable time teaching disabled people the fundamentals of that sport. Janice won the award for giving up her time every Wednesday afternoon to teach special needs college children and adults the art of playing indoor bowls. Her patience and dedication in the role was seen as remarkable and very beneficial to those who were participating. She had up to 28 people involved in her sessions. Her willingness to devote her time to those who needed it was well recognised across the Wairarapa community, and that was reflected in the number of votes she received for last year’s awards. Leighton was nominated in last year’s Volunteer of the Year category, and this year’s winner will once again be someone who receives the largest amount of votes, outside the category winners.

TRC TOYOTA

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD An award recognising the lifetime achievements of anyone in Wairarapa Sports.

Bob Wilton - Last year’s winner

Bob Wilton has had almost two decades at the helm of Masterton Motorplex Drag Racing Club and he’s as mad keen on the sport as he ever was. These days Bob Wilton’s involvement in drag racing is strictly administrative but back in the early 1980s he was a competitor himself, holding a number of national records. Wilton can recall when drag racing events were held on Dixon Street in Masterton with its popularity growing to the point where it became patently obvious that a better venue was required and when a site at Hood Aerodrome became available it was quickly snapped up. For almost a decade Masterton Motorplex successfully held meetings there but in early 2008 came the news that Eagle Air was about to provide an air service from Hood and that the drag strip, and the club, could be destined for the scrap heap. As it happened, however, this cloud certainly had a silver lining for it prompted Wilton and his committee to start looking seriously at what they could do to save the situation and from there came the dream of constructing a track of international specifications which would be the envy of all other drag racing clubs throughout the country.

SUPREME AWARD

Your locally owned newspaper

Recognises the Supreme Sportsperson of the Year chosen from the 15 category winners.

Rebecca Mahoney Her rugby refereeing exploits led to Rebecca Mahoney being a popular winner of the supreme champion trophy at last year’s 2017 Wairarapa Times-Age sports awards held at Copthorne Solway Park. The former two-times winner of the Women’s Rugby World Cup only made the transition from playing to refereeing in 2015 and her rise up the ranks has been spectacular. Already Mahoney has controlled two grand finals of the national women’s interprovincial championship, became the first female referee to control a domestic first-class men’s fixture in New Zealand, refereed her first 15-a-side international,

- Last year’s winner a match between Japan and Hong Kong in Hong Kong, and officiated on the women’s world sevens tour. She was also a finalist for the Referee of the Year trophy at the New Zealand rugby awards held in Auckland in December 2016. Mahoney was one of 15 category winners in the reckoning for the supreme champion award, having taken away the Senior Official of the Year trophy earlier in the night. Mahoney was only the second first-class referee from Wairarapa in the last 20 years.
