{JUST SAYIN’}

IF YOU FOLLOW WAKEDITION ON INSTAGRAM, THERE’S ONE THING YOU’LL KNOW ABOUT US; WE’RE A LITTLE OPINIONATED SOMETIMES. BUT WE RECKON OUR OPINIONS ARE REASONABLY VALID, SOMETIMES A LITTLE ENTERTAINING.

POSITIVE VIBES FOR BRAD SMEELE

WE11

THE NEED TO EVOLVE, PROGRESS AND STRIVE FOR BETTER RESULTS IS SOMETHING THAT’S PROGRAMMED INTO OUR DNA AS HUMANS. IT’S THE CORE REASON WHY ELITE WAKEBOARDERS ARE PUSHING OUR SPORT FURTHER, HIGHER AND FASTER EVERY DAY. AS EACH LEVEL OF PROGRESSION IS REACHED THE ELEMENT OF RISK IS INCREASED AND UNFORTUNATELY THE POTENTIAL FOR INJURY BECOMES MORE PREVALENT.

SWEET BITTERNESS STAYING POSITIVE WHILE BEING INJURED With HAYLEY SMITH

FOR THOSE WHO KNOW OR HAVE MET HAYLEY SMITH, YOU’LL KNOW A FEW THINGS ABOUT HER. ONE BEING SHE LOVES WAKEBOARDING, IT’S BEEN A MAJOR FOCUS AND PASSION OF HERS FOR WELL OVER A DECADE NOW. SECONDLY YOU’LL AGREE WHEN I SAY HAYLEY’S BUBBLY, POSITIVE AND FRIENDLY PERSONALITY IS CONTAGOUS, SHE HAS THE ABILITY TO BRING A SPARK OF LIGHT INTO ANY SITUATION. LIKE MANY ACTION SPORTS ATHLETES, THERE IS ONE THING THOUGH, THAT HAS HELD HAYLEY BACK OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS; INJURY.

“I’M A HUGE BELIEVER IN WORKING ON PREVENTIONS, STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY ESPECIALLY SINCE GOING THROUGH REHAB.”

BUSTY DUNN

Photo: James Tyrrell Busty has been known for his unbelieveable ability to spin. 900’s and 1080’s are a walk in the park for Busty but after spending some time with him at Cairns Wakepark we learned that he’s just as talented at wrapping the nose of his Liquid Force board around rails.

SAM BROWN

Photo: James Tyrrell Sam is quickly emerging as one of Australia’s most promising talents and was rightfully selected for our Generation Next project. Sam’s bag of tricks is deeper than you could imagine and tricks like this Indy Tantrum prove his style has developed years beyond his age.

WE: Tell me how you both met?

WE: Mirade, do you surf?

PARIS: Mirade and I both met when we were young, our Dad’s have known each other for ages and we started playing in the same soccer team when we were about 11.

MIRADE: No I do not surf (laughs). I try to surf, but I’ve always been on the water out on the boat tubing and kneeboarding. MIRADE: Amber rips!

MIRADE: wouldn’t really talk to each other (laughs). It wasn’t until we got a bit older we became good friends.

MIRADE: Dad bought a wakeboard for himself and I decided I wanted to try it. I was 12 then.

WE: Paris, you’re a pretty good surfer. How long have you

PARIS: And then Grandma...

PARIS: I started when I was about four, and have been com peting for a while now. I never really wakeboarded when I was younger; we didn’t have a boat or anything. Wing Wetsuits introduction to wakeboarding.

MIRADE: Yes every Christmas (laughs).

PARIS: you get it from Amber, you’re like a little kangaroo bouncing everywhere (laughs).

MIRADE: Oh yeah, my Grandma lives next door to Amber and she started buying vouchers for wakeboard lessons from their shop.

MIRADE: When I was little I didn’t really know how good she actually was and how successful she’s been overseas. I could see she was good, but never really knew about all her results and achievements, it’s awesome.

AMBER: Every Christmas!

AMBER:

GB WE11

PARIS: She gets caught in the rips. MIRADE: It might have happened once or twice (Laughs).

MIRADE: We often ride in Gunnamatta Bay, but it depends on the wind. We cruise all over

PARIS: We just like to pay each other out, even if it’s not really true. I pay Mirade out my wakeboarding.

right now?

WE: Who do you usually go riding with? Is there a regular group you guys organise?

PARIS: I really want to do a 360 but I don’t think I’m good enough yet. For the moment I just want to get better at my heelside 180’s wake to wake. MIRADE: I want to get better at toeside jumps

you two then? MIRADE: Me! (Laughs) PARIS: No me, it’s totally me (laughs). In all seriousness, I think Mirade does a lot of things better than me, but I can do some things better than her. MIRADE: Paris gets more height. MIRADE: There are usually three of us girls who take the boat out. Paris, another friend; Amy and myself.

some tips? MIRADE: today Amber was helping me land my back roll. It’s cool to have someone like Amber around who’s so good at wakeboarding. AMBER: along the way.

PARIS: can learn from each other and push ourselves to get better. WE: What’s the best part about being out with a group of only girls and riding together. MIRADE: Just being out on the water, there’s no pressure because we’re not competing.

“THE WATER HURT YOUR EYES LIKE NAILS. SO WE JUST DECIDED TO PUT ON SNORKELLING GOGGLES TO RIDE AND WE COULD SEE AGAIN...”

PARIS: I think it’s good to have a mix. I often just go out and surf on my own and it’s really a sport just for yourself. When your wakeboarding you need a crew of people in the boat so it’s more social for me in that way. It’s fun to have a group of people to go out with especially all girls. AMBER: PARIS: One day we were really keen to go out. Mirade: Yeah we had planned it the day before. The water was glass but it started raining while we were out. PARIS: The water hurt your eyes like nails. So we just decided to put on snorkelling goggles to ride and we could see again (laughs). It was a bit hard to breathe because of the nose piece, but we sucked it up and it was awesome. MIRADE: No one else was out, because nobody is that crazy. It was super fun. PARIS: Not even Amber was out, and that’s saying something! WE: What do you girls see for the future and your PARIS: It’s just all fun for me. I just want to be out on the water having as much fun as possible. MIRADE: I was to get as good as I can. Progress as much as possible...and ride till I die (laughs).
