WELCOME TO WAKEFIELD GRAMMAR PRE-PREPARATORY SCHOOL.

Just as a child’s eyes are filled with endless curiosity and wonder, so we never stop looking for new ways to introduce every pupil to the joys of learning. We believe that every child brings their own unique talents and strengths into the classroom and we are here to bring them out, to build confidence in their abilities and to create strong, independent individuals who care about others, embrace new challenges and have a growing awareness of the world around them.

START EARLY.

IT’S THE WAY WE HELP CHILDREN TO ACHIEVE THE EXTRAORDINARY.

A PERSONAL WELCOME FROM THE HEAD

Every day as I look around the school, I see children who are confident, happy and engaged as they begin to realise the full nature and extent of their own unique potential. My ethos as Head is to ensure that children are developed as whole learners, by giving value to all subjects. I believe that children should be encouraged to explore every new opportunity as they venture into their own exciting future. I look forward to meeting you and preparing your child for the fascinating and enjoyable school journey that lies ahead.

THE WAKEFIELD WAY

As one of a family of three schools that make up the Wakefield Grammar School Foundation, our school follows the Wakefield Way, a shared ethos which defines everything we do, academically, socially and ethically. You can discover more about the Wakefield Way at wgsf.org.uk/wgpps

YOU’LL LIKE THE WAY WE INSTIL A LOVE OF LEARNING FROM DAY ONE.

The Wakefield Pre-Prep journey begins from the age of 3 and carries on from FS1 (Nursery), FS2 (Reception) and KS1 (Years 1 & 2). Life at the school is rich and varied, with caring, experienced staff dedicated to creating a happy environment where our youngest pupils can thrive.

Our primary focus is on making learning fun and exciting, by igniting curiosity, building on interests and developing talents, passions and potential that will help children on their way to a successful, high-achieving future.

Through our values, pupils are taught that everyone deserves ‘Unconditional Positive Regard’ and that in every situation and social context, our first instinct is always, kindness.

– we teach children to respect diversity and appreciate differences.

– we encourage pupils to become independent learners and problem solvers.

– we are mindful of others, working together, supporting and learning from each other and celebrating other pupils’ success.

IT’S THE WAY OUR TEACHERS GIVE EVERY PUPIL A BRILLIANT START IN LIFE.

Each day, nothing gives us greater pleasure than seeing how our gently effective academic environment and inclusive culture helps young learners to fly.

We’re committed to keeping class sizes small and educational inspiration high, with experienced teachers who cultivate positive relationships so every child will enjoy the best quality learning and support, both at school and at home. With smaller classes, we can get to know each child as a true individual and support their all-round wellbeing and development. From Day One, we equip pupils with the tools they will need to succeed and inspire a lifelong love of learning through our proven, play-based teaching approach. Pupils are championed and empowered in a way that builds individual resilience and character, laying the groundwork for a life full of possibilities.

WE INTRODUCE YOU’LL LIKE THE WAY INTO THE CLASSROOM. THE WOW FACTOR

The way we see it, the more individually focused learning is, the more likely pupils are to succeed. Because all children learn differently, we tailor exceptional teaching to personal needs, with bespoke and managed activities which prepare pupils to grow into unique individuals, providing a stimulating launchpad for future achievements.

Every day is a new adventure as children are energised and inspired by class teachers and specialist teachers in PE, games, music and languages to play, participate in and enjoy exciting new experiences.

12

WOW WEEKS.

Once a year a very special WOW Week happens. It’s a top-secret surprise so students (and parents) have no idea when it will happen. Every WOW week is an immersive curriculum experience which the whole school can get involved in. Previous WOW weeks have seen our school transformed into everything from Neverland to Oz.

OUTDOORS, TO BUILD

WE USE THE GREAT YOU’LL LIKE THE WAY INNER CONFIDENCE.

If you go down to the woods today, you’ll see how learning beyond the classroom can add a whole new dimension to education, giving children the courage to try new experiences and experiment with their imaginations.

Our Forest School encourages children to take an interest in the world around them as they explore, play and learn adventurously, practising the independent thinking and decision-making that will power their progress later in life. Besides the many positive physical and wellbeing benefits, it also develops self-awareness and key collaboration and communication skills, building self-esteem and confidence.

By showing children what active co-operation and an adventurous outlook can achieve, they learn to become adaptable, collaborating creatively, exploring new possibilities and challenging their own limits.

MAKE CHILDREN OUR HOUSES

Our House system is intrinsically weaved into the fabric of school life, giving each child a true sense of belonging. Students join one of four Houses which run upwards through our school and also seamlessly into Wakefield Girls’ and QEGS, making everyone feel part of our happy, warm and fun school community right from the word go.

FEEL MORE AT HOME. 15

NEVER STOP GIVING CHILDREN IT’S THE WAY WE A BETTER START.

In the early years, every stage is a valuable stepping stone, so getting off on the right foot is really important. To make the journey an enjoyable and rewarding one the whole family can share, we will invite you and your child along for afternoon visits before the first term begins, then regularly keep you up to speed with progress via project samples and photos of their learning experiences.

Because every pupil learns differently, we think differently, taking the time to understand how each pupil learns best, supporting them to complete assessments and tailoring that support to gently develop their talents.

Staff also continually compare notes to ensure every pupil’s needs are being met, bringing a more joined-up approach to those crucial first few years.

We champion each child by encouraging independent thought and building confidence and consideration for others. This helps them to progress happily and develop a positive sense of identity, ensuring the very best of starts to young academic careers.

AN APPETITE FOR READING. BOOKWORMS GIVING YOUNG

For us, a love of learning starts with a love of books. If a child enjoys reading, then education as a whole becomes more accessible.

That’s why we encourage children to read at home with high quality texts and exciting reading challenges designed to inspire and engage them. It’s also the reason why we’ve created our own book for parents to share with children, about a young owl who goes to school for the very first time. It’s called Baley Finds the Way, and you’ll find it on our website!

CARE ABOUT THE WORLD

YOUNG STUDENTS IT’S THE WAY OUR AND EACH OTHER.

Our school environment is the perfect place to make good friends and great progress. New pupils are paired with a Friendship Buddy who will show them around and help them settle in.

And because we believe that learning to be tolerant of each other is as important as any lesson, we actively promote friendship, anti-bullying and respect.

To build confidence, we also encourage children to share their thoughts, present ideas and take on leadership roles in school. By learning to take responsibility, they discover all about the relationship between good leadership and good teamwork.

18

The school calendar is wonderfully enriching too. With 25 well-resourced clubs, sports for all, twice weekly music lessons, annual drama productions and exciting trips and visits, our enrichment activities are all designed to ignite interests, develop new skills and broaden horizons.

19

THAT WE CAN ALL

CHILDREN LEARN IT’S THE WAY MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

As a Yorkshire-loving Pre-Prep school, we really care about being socially engaged with our wider community.

By placing fundraising front and centre of many school activities, children learn that we can all make a difference to the world around us.

Once a term we have a MAD (Making A Difference) Day where we support our chosen charities with major fundraising activities. This huge schoolwide effort helps pupils to develop a sense of empathy, responsibility and togetherness as they support our community and inspire each other to have a positive impact on society.
