STRATEGIC VISION Way Ahead. 2023 - 2028

FOREWARD FROM THE

CHAIR OF GOVERNORS THE

WAKEFIELD

WAY

It is my great privilege to be the Chair of Governors at Wakefield Girls' High School. Wakefield Girls' is a special place with a rich history of educating generations of girls across Yorkshire for nearly 150 years. I am immensely proud that the school continues to exist as an integral part of the locality today, with strong partnerships in place with local community groups and organisations throughout the city of Wakefield, surrounding areas and an ever expanding network of illustrious alumnae. A great education centres around what happens in the classroom and relationships in the school community. This is at the heart of what Wakefield Girls’ does so well. How Wakefield Girls' operates makes it recognised as one of leading independent schools in the North. As part of the Wakefield Grammar School Foundation, one of the country’s leading families of single-sex independent day schools, girls enjoy the best of both worlds. They benefit educationally from a personal, girls-only environment; but there is also close cooperation with Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in drama, music and numerous social and cultural activities, with some joint teaching in the Sixth Form. Looking to the future, the Board and I are committed to delivering this Strategic Vision; it is an important statement about who we are, who we want to be, and will help us to continue in the school’s trail blazing quest to enable all students, from every walk of life, to be the very best they can be.

Simon Chamberlain CHAIR OF GOVERNORS

As one of a family of three schools that make up the Wakefield Grammar School Foundation, our school follows the Wakefield Way, a shared ethos which defines everything we do, academically, socially and ethically. The Wakefield Way is about developing inspirational learning environments which celebrate and nurture the distinctive learning needs of boys and girls. It’s about encouraging each individual student to look outwards as well as inwards as they become remarkable people with the desire to make a difference in the world. It’s about building confidence, inspiring hearts and minds and instilling an empowering sense of purpose. But most of all, it’s about providing an imaginative foundation for life, learning and lasting achievement.

The golden thread is the Joy of Learning: the positivity, energy & respect that permeates every interaction at Wakefield Girls’. A Wakefield Girls’ education is not simply about passing exams but it is about the joy of learning each student experiences. Discussion, debate, collaboration and challenge are at the heart of what we do and our students are encouraged to explore beyond what they learn in the classroom, in order to develop their own ideas and interests.
