pitstop BARRY STILO President, Benalla Auto Club Inc. Hi Members, As 2016 draws to a close I would just like to thank my fellow BAC Committee members for a productive and successful year. We have been able to achieve so much during this year and I look forward to seeing more improvements around the Club and the tracks in 2017.
So to all BAC Members a Happy and Safe Christmas and New Year period. I look forward to seeing you around the club in 2017! Cheers, Barry
CHRIS LEWIS-WILLIAMS CEO, Benalla Auto Club Group As another year draws to a close, and hasn’t this one flown by, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with the Benalla Auto Club, Winton, Wakefield and the AASA for welcoming me into the role as CEO. My feet have barely hit the ground all year as I spent time learning our businesses and working with the management teams on what we need to do to make things even better. We have worked hard this year to improve communications with you, the members, and this will continue as we develop plans in conjunction with the BAC Committee. Always remember that we are a club and as members you have a say in where your club is going. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Wayne Williams, Matt Baragwanath, Russell Kelly and Yvette Campbell without whom I would not have survived the year! We have three extremely busy businesses and it is only with the support of this management team, and all of the team,
4
that we are able to get things done in the usually tight timeframes. The passion from our management team to make our club better continues to drive new ideas and bigger event ideas, that I am positive will show great results in the future. The 2nd Annual Black Tie Ball was a great success and thankyou to Wayne and the team at Winton for pushing for this event to become a reality – it is such a great way for us to celebrate the year and for our club to get together in a social setting. And it is great to see everyone all dressed up! I congratulate the award winners and new life members, without whom our club could not do what it does. I am already looking forward to next year’s BTB! I wish all BAC Members a Happy and Safe Christmas and am looking forward to another busy and successful New Year! Cheers, Chris
ROCK STARS COME TO WINTON IN 2017 Winton Raceway will host some of Australia’s finest musicians when the inaugural “Rockin’ the Raceway” event comes to town on Saturday, 25 March 2017. The open-air rock concert will be held in the campground, and performers will include Adam Brand, Thirsty Merc, Choirboys, Dean Ray and Geelong cover band, Riversnake. Proceedings will be emceed by stand-up comedians, the Nelson Twins. Concert patrons will be able to camp overnight, with the campground able to hold up to 5,000 guests. “With the facilities we already have for the campground, we thought what better way to utilise the area than by putting on a huge concert,” Winton operations manager Wayne Williams said.
“Obviously Winton is synonymous with motorsport but there are other things we can do as well. “It’s going to be huge – at that time of the year it will be lovely Autumn weather and with the lineup we have in place, we’re expecting plenty of people to travel from all over the region. “With the campground available, people won’t need to worry about getting home afterwards, they can enjoy the concert and then stay the night.” Tickets for “Rockin’ the Raceway” will be on sale very soon, so stay tuned to the Winton website and Facebook page!

AASA NSW State Championship Report
SRZ RACING SECURES 2016 SUPER TRUCK TITLE Steven Zammit, Brett Dalgish and SRZ Racing have prevailed in the 2016 Australian Super Truck Championship, clinching the title by virtue of winning three of the six truck races at Wakefield Park over the weekend. Zammit and Dalgish swapped driving duties in their Kenworth 401 throughout the weekend, but had to work hard for their success with Shannon Smith, Barry Butwell and Robert Fern taking the challenge right up to the champion team. Butwell (Mack Superliner) was particularly quick early in the weekend, qualifying on pole position and leading for most of Race 1 before an injector pump failure caused him to slow on the last lap. After sitting out Races 2 and 3 to diagnose the problem, Butwell was back in action on Sunday and claimed victory in Race 5. Shannon Smith also scored a race victory, holding out Dalgish by just 0.3s in Race 2, while the other race winner was Robbie Fern,
6
who demonstrated some exciting defensive manoeuvres to bring his Volvo across the line first in Race 4. Zammit fought back valiantly in the final 10 lap Super Prix to clinch the championship. “We’ve had a lot of success in this truck and it’s great to be back on top; there was a really strong crowd at Wakefield Park this weekend and we enjoyed putting on a show for them,” Zammit said. The other headline category of the weekend was the Australian Pulsar Racing Association series, which wrapped up its season with a pair of one-hour endurance races. The first enduro on Saturday afternoon was won by Matt Boylan, who qualified on pole position and streaked away from the field to take a 12 second victory from Josh Heath and Daniel Smith. The race was marred by a number of drive-through penalties for competitors who exceeded the 40 km/h pit lane speed limit.
Christmas 2016
Daniel Smith survived a couple of close encounters with lapped traffic to win Sunday’s enduro. Smith also capitalised on the demise of polesitter James Keene, who led early but retired with mechanical problems, and Josh Heath, who ran at the front for much of the race, only to suffer a heartbreaking CV shaft failure just five minutes before the finish.
The Miniature Race Cars ran in a combined field with the Legend Cars, which produced thrilling racing throughout the weekend between Rick Christy and Liam Heaton. In the trophy race, Christy and Heaton recorded identical race times to the 10,000th of a second, the win ultimately awarded to Christy in a photo finish.
Smith claimed victory ahead of Boylan and Dimitri Agathos, who secured his second Pulsar Series title.
The large crowd was also kept on the edge of their seats by the BMW Drivers Cup, in which there were three different winners from the four races. Brian Bourke won the opener, Glenn Potter won Races 2 and 3, and Sean Bell took out the trophy race to secure his third consecutive BMW Drivers Cup title.
Michael Coulter (Chevrolet Oz Truck) won the opening Stock Car race, but it was Chad Cotton (TA2 Mustang) who prevailed in the other three races and finished off the weekend with the win in the trophy race ahead of Ian McAlister (TA2 Mustang) and David Hender (Pontiac Stock Car). Cotton also enjoyed success in the Miniature Race Cars, in which he won all four races from Jase Collins.
Mark Stinson (Nissan 200SX) won the Super TT category after a weekend-long battle with Endree Saade (BMW M3); Matthew Bloem (Mitsubishi Evo) finished third in all four races.

2016 Season Review
CLEAN SLADE
FAST FEMMES
BROKEN RECORD
WINTON WASHOUT
BLAST FROM THE PAST 12
Christmas 2016
There were plenty of memorable moments at Winton and Wakefield Park in 2016, our commentator Lachy Mansell picked out five of the best. Before the 2016 Woodstock Bourbon Winton Supersprint, Tim Slade had never won a Supercars race. After racing in the category full-time since 2009 and enduring a few tough seasons with Erebus Motorsport and Walkinshaw Racing, Slade switched teams to Brad Jones Racing - a team based just an hour north of the nation’s action track - for the 2016 season. The new partnership may have started quietly in the first couple of events but at Winton, Slade came out of the blocks firing, qualifying on pole position for Saturday’s Race 10 and streaking away to an unopposed victory. He backed up in Sunday’s Race 11 as well, the BJR team using smart strategy to elevate him to the lead from fourth on the grid. Wakefield Park was the scene of success for a couple of the country’s most successful female racers. The first moment came in July’s Series X3 NSW one-hour endurance race, in which Emily Duggan claimed a sensational victory after a race-long dice with Adam Bryant and Brendan Vinckx. Duggan pounced on Bryant for the lead and then resisted pressure to hold on for the win after a late-race Safety Car. The second key female victory was Leanne Tander’s national Formula Ford round win at August’s CAMS State Championship race meeting - the win enabled Tander to open up a points margin over her rivals and she ultimately became Australia’s first female circuit racing champion. The new surface at Winton and high grip levels produced scorching lap times right throughout the season, with lap records broken in no less than 20 different categories over the course of the year, some by as much as three seconds. But by far the most stunning record was set by Chris Anthony in the Australian Formula 3 Championship, during June’s Shannons Nationals race meeting. The 1:14.3401 lap not only smashed the previous F3 record, it also broke the outright record which had been held by Christian Murchison since 2000. Anthony kept everyone waiting - he didn’t set the record until lap 14 of 18 in the final race of the weekend - but that just added to the hype and spectacle. The Winton 300 has a history of producing the most fascinating of stories - just think of the hard-fought, emotional win for Rob Hay/Nick Cancian in 2013, or Nathan Jess’s dramatic, last-lap pass for the lead in 2014. The Winton 300 delivered again in 2016 but the storyline was quite different to previous years; heavy rain throughout the event caught out a number of fancied runners and gave the underdogs their turn in the spotlight. Jess survived the conditions to grab his second win alongside Ryan Reynolds, Henry Draper/Linda Devlin pulled off a giant-killing effort in their Mini to finish second, and Hay/Cancian returned to the podium in third. It was another amazing chapter in the race’s history. From initial concept to execution in just a few months, the 40th anniversary reenactment of Australia’s first all-historic race meeting at Amaroo Park in 1976 was one of the feel-good stories at Wakefield Park in 2016. The assortment of vintage machinery, on two, three and four wheels, brought an abundance of spectators to the venue, with people of all generations flocking to the track to admire the machinery both on and off the circuit. The racing was good as well, with drivers and riders not afraid to push the limits of their beautiful historic vehicles, even during the Sunday’s wet conditions. It was a roaring success by every measure, and will continue into the future.

pitstop WAYNE WILLIAMS Operations Manager, Winton Motor Raceway Hi BAC Members, This year has come to a close and what a great year it has been, some fantastic events that brought record entries and record crowds is extremely pleasing and is recognition for our small hard working team here at The Nation’s Action Track. The last 2 months has seen a couple of our traditional events held with the Winton 300 and the Ken Leigh HQ 4 hour. The Winton 300 attracted a great field of competitors, from debutants to Winton 300 regulars, young drivers to not-so-young drivers and of course both genders were represented amongst the wide variety of vehicles that competed, it was a huge success with the only negative being the torrential weather mother nature threw at us, at the end of the day after the 300 was cut short at 77 laps it was Nathan Jess & Ryan Reynolds in the future racer that took line honours, congratulations to all the category winners and to every other competitor for the great weekend, a special mention to all the officials who braved the conditions during the day, you guys are a big part of what makes this event what it is. On the weekend of December 3-4, Winton once again hosted the Ken Leigh HQ 4 Hour Enduro, this event attracted great car numbers from all over Australia, another fantastic instalment of this time honoured event, with support categories including for the first time the NSW Production Touring cars providing good car counts also it was a great weekend of racing all round. On Saturday December 10th the final round of the BP Midlands Sprint series was held and yet again the amount of competitors hitting the track on the day was incredible, this goes to show just how popular the series has been, congratulations to all the winners and other competitors for a brilliant finish to the year.

Looking to the next couple of months we will cap a great year off with the Black Tie Ball and the BAC Member’s day before the team here at Winton take a well-earned rest over Christmas and the New Year before we embark on what is going to be a massive 2017. A huge announcement that has now been released is the inaugural “Rockin the Raceway” to be held in our campground precinct on March 25th 2017, with a massive line up featuring great artists, Adam Brand, Thirsty Merc, Choirboys, Dean Ray and Riversnake ripping it up on stage while the night will be emceed by comedy duo “The Nelson Twins”, lock this date away ladies and gentleman, it is going to be a great night out, tickets will go on sale in January, stay tuned. The Winton Raceway office and circuit closes on Wednesday 21st December 2016 and we re-open on Monday 9th January 2017, the first on-track action kicks off on Friday 13th January with the first Test & Tune for the year. So on behalf of all the staff at Winton Motor Raceway we would like to wish you all a very safe and happy festive season and look forward to seeing you here in 2017. Thanks everyone, See you at the track Wayne
Christmas 2016
MATT BARAGWANATH Operations Manager, Wakefield Park Motorsport Hello Members,
what we can achieve with passion, determination and commitment from everyone My first full year at Wakefield Park is now complete involved. and I am proud of everything we have achieved at the venue in 2016. We have also made some significant upgrades to the track this year; we installed new timing It certainly hasn’t been without its challenges, loops in the circuit and pit lane, completed but overall we have been able to implement some a full re-branding and subsequent signage major improvements and the circuit is now well update, started refurbishment of the on-site and truly heading in the right direction. accommodation and installed state-of-the-art noise-monitoring equipment. There were quite a few highlights throughout the season and it was great to welcome such a diverse These upgrades will not only be appreciated by array of categories and disciplines to the nation’s our customers, they will also ensure we continue spectator track. to provide a safe and corporately responsible environment for both our patrons and the A couple of events were clear standouts. surrounding community. Firstly, being able to welcome the Australian Superbike Championship back to Wakefield Park was very satisfying. The motorcycles put on a professional display of racing which attracted a strong crowd, and it was also a key step in strengthening the relationship between Wakefield Park and Motorcycling NSW/Motorcycling Australia, something which also allowed us to promote our own motorcycle ride days – these proving very popular throughout the year.
On a personal note, another milestone for the year was the arrival of our first child Mason, who is already showing signs of interest in cars – which is pleasing to see! Next year is shaping up to be another cracker – we have a couple of major national-level race meetings on the calendar, plus the usual array of club/state level modern and historic race meetings – see you trackside!
The second outstanding event was our 40th Regards, anniversary historic race meeting. We committed to promoting the re-enactment event just three Matt months before its scheduled date, leaving us with a heavy workload to attract competitors and generate publicity throughout the region. Thanks largely to the efforts of John Medley, Rob Rowe and John Lackey, we passed the test with flying colours and the event delivered a very healthy number of entries for both cars and motorcycles. The spectator turnout was nothing short of outstanding – Saturday’s crowd was the largest seen at Wakefield Park since the Konica Series days. We will definitely be holding more events like these in the future and it demonstrated
