Chris Coughlin (JD '90) is a Professor of Law at Wake Forest University School of Law where she teaches Legal Analysis, Research and Writing, Selected Topics in Health Law, and Civil Procedure. She has received multiple teaching awards, including the Mary S. Lawrence Award from the Legal Writing Institute, the Wake Forest University Teaching and Learning Center's Teaching Innovation Award, the Joseph Branch Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Graham Award for Excellence in Teaching Legal Research and Writing.
Professor Coughlin’s interdisciplinary scholarship has been cited in legal, scientific, medical, and educational journals and texts. She has authored or co-authored multiple editions of five textbooks, and more than two dozen articles, essays, and book chapters. Her textbook, A Lawyer Writes, is the most widely used legal writing textbook in the country. Professor Coughlin’s most recent scholarship focuses on the legal, ethical, and policy issues in human subjects research, investigational drugs, and emerging biotechnologies, as well as other issues at the intersection of law and public health.
Professor Coughlin also has an appointment at the Wake Forest University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences where she is part of the core faculty in the University’s Center for Bioethics, Health & Society. She is a member of the American Law Institute.
Professor Coughlin and her husband, Rick, have four children and two very spoiled Labrador Retrievers. Appearance of a name in this program is not presumptive evidence of graduation and shall not be regarded as conclusive. The diploma of Wake Forest University School of Law, signed and sealed by its proper officers, remains the official testimony of the possession of the degree.
Academic regalia worn at college and university functions dates back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students used them to keep warm in medieval castles and halls of learning. Robes for the doctorate degree carry broad, velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the full sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or a specific color distinctive of the degree. Robes for the master degree include long half-moon sleeves rather than velvet panels.
Candidates for and holders of the master and doctorate degrees wear hoods over their robes. The hood symbolizes heavy burden and identifies the level of the degree, the field of learning, and the institution that awards it. The color of the trimming declares the major field of learning. The academic color for law is purple. The colors that line the hood identify the university awarding the degree.
Candidates for graduation are vested with cords signifying that they are graduating with academic honors distinction or have participated in various activities during law school.

What began in 1894 as a fledgling department within Wake Forest College has grown into the prominent and highly-ranked Wake Forest University School of Law, one of the top law schools in the country.
In 1956, the University, including the Law School, relocated from Wake Forest, North Carolina to Winston-Salem. Thirty-seven years later, the Law School moved to its new space at the Worrell Professional Center, which it shared with the School of Business until 2013. In 2017, the Law School became home to the newest North Carolina Business Court, which is still housed at Worrell today.
Beginning with the 1905 appointment of Needham Yancey Gulley as the first dean of the Law School, Wake Forest Law’s tradition of exceptional leadership has persisted throughout the years, as has its reputation for outstanding teaching, scholarship, and service.
In keeping with the University’s motto of Pro Humanitate, the Wake Forest University School of Law has continued to build on its legacy of developing not just lawyers, but “citizen lawyers,” who will have a positive impact at the local, state, national, and international levels.
The following degrees are recognized at Wake Forest University School of Law:
Juris Doctor (JD) — The first earned law degree indicating graduation from a law school with three years of post-baccalaureate study, or the equivalent of seven years of formal higher education, at least three years of which are law.
Master of Laws (LLM) — An earned postgraduate degree in law indicating the successful completion of one additional year of specialized legal study after receipt of the first degree in law. The Wake Forest LLM degree is for those whose first degree in law is from a university of a foreign country.
Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) — An earned postgraduate degree in law indicating generally the successful completion of two years of formal legal study beyond receipt of the first degree in law plus the writing of a major original research thesis or dissertation.
Master of Studies in Law (MSL) — An earned postgraduate degree in the study of law to obtain a practical understanding of the intersection of law and the workplace with an emphasis on compliance and regulation.
